A lot of those discussions are far, far louder than their actual impact. Most tables aren’t going to require the degree of players having to, say, ignore the entire rogue class because of how “bad” it is.
I don't really see a point to rank any classes in dnd, the only reason why you would if you were meta gaming hard. Just play what you want to have fun but just take acknowledgement if the way how you play or take care of encounters effects the other players. Altho I do see a point in ranking "some of the classes" such as ranger or Druid as these classes can be kinda underpowered for many who are just trying to learn the class. In my honest opinion don't worry about it. Many people "rank" classes based on how good they are but in reality it's not hoe busted they are that matters, it's how you enjoy having fun with them. Altho if your JUST taking your time to make one of the most broken characters in a game it can be really frustrating for the other players or the DM to make the game harder just because your breaking the game.
But you definitely shouldn't restrict how you play a character based on the class or sub class your playing with. Just because aberrant mind sorcerers are strong doesn't mean you can't play them to have fun or to make a character around it .
New DM Q. I was gonna DM LMOP and DISP but just joined a group that plays it on the 29th. Any other suggestions? I read waterdeep and COS but isnt COS hard for new DMs? I have about every sorceboook.
You're going to play LMoP? You can always DM after you play it (just don't read the adventure before you play it... that's meta knowledge (aka cheating))
I don't recommend CoS for new DMs.
Yeah I was working on DMing it locally but figure since now im playing on Roll20, I should do another to keep everything seperate. I wanted to do one before COS
Dragon Heist is a level 1 to 5 adventure.
There are non-WotC published adventures as well. Here are some free ones:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
COS actually the first game I ever DMed and yea its a bit of a slog especially how in COS there are alot of encounters or dungeons for players that ARE WAY TO DANGEROUS imo Def read up on COS on YouTube, Xp to level 3 has a good video to some of the stuff in COS that is really unbalanced and need attention for newer dms
Perhaps let's bring this to #dm-discussion and avoid possible spoilers.
Hello... I have a question- Is it ok for our group to make some other lore stories based on starwars and other franchizes?
That's up to your DM and their table.
^
I can see there's like sooo many things i don't understand for now... Great, few explosion of head a day keeps sanity away yayyy
What are you having trouble with?
You know the new terms and stuff, not really familiar with it
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

lf just tonight dnd sesh anyone?
Hay I just randomly searched for DnD servers in hope to get one where i could play dnd in a campaign. I got kicked out of my friends group.
Heya! There's #looking-for-players where you can look for a game, or leave a post in #750812887697588356 😎
Ah great thanks!
Hey was goin on
Sorry me again, how do i get the rights to write sth in these channels?😅
Oh let me tell you
To post a thread on them, you can go to #1075498333705089084 to use a bot to make a post
Otherwise you can post in the posted threads 👌
So there’s 2 bots, @pale quiver where you use /looking-for-players and i forget the other bots name but it’s /looking-for-DM
Oh well not me here sitting at like 1 am trying to figure out how to get a new dnd group while taking up time of people that dont know me😅 great Thanks to you two, i hope i get it figured out till the end
Anytime, hope you find a nice group! 😎
it worked.... i figured it out🥹 thanks again
Huzzah!
Gg!
This game is fun its just, like a simple mathematical formula that you need to learn and that mathematical formula stuck to you the most because it was enjoyable
Anyone have tips to overcome cringe? (Especially voices…)
What do you mean?
Just like a lot of the time when I play as a DM (I’m really new btw) I just feel this sense that I’m not doing a good job and what I do and say is cringe :/ and espically voices.
Do your players think that?
They tell me I’m fine and I do a good job. It’s just a self-insecurity
I don't know if those insecurities ever go away entirely. I would expect that they may lessen with time. As for voices, you can actively work on that. Same with description, whether it's expanding your vocabulary, invoking the senses more, or what have you.
If you're new, you're unlikely to be good out of the gate. That's fine. Everyone starts somewhere. But if you and your friends are having fun, you're doing fine. If you're not having fun at all, that might be worth reflecting on.
Thx for those words. 🙂
Its normal to think that in the beginning, but after some time it gets really fun, just practice a bit, imagine the character and the voice you wanna do and have fun while doing it, dont think about what others think.
Imagine as if you are in the realm you created (or visited) and just live the fantasy
Hmmmm ok well thx guys and also when I say players I just did one incredibly scuffed session with one of my friends since I came back.
Nobody bats a thousand. If things go poorly, the best thing to do is to consider why and do what you reasonably can to avoid those pitfalls in the future.
Ok, also I have a more technical question.
So you know appendix A in the DM’s guide? How does it work exactly? Is it that, when you don’t know what to do you roll a dice and see what you get in the table of your choice and use that? As a sort of a Creativity helper?
That's a good way of thinking about it.
Ok
It also says at the start, "This appendix helps you quickly generate a dungeon."
Hm
Hey also anyone know how to use the lfg bot? I don’t really know how it works. Everyone’s posts are divided into 5 parts but how do you do that with the command?
The instructions are in #find-a-game. You type a command in the #1075498333705089084 channel.
Yeah Ik that but also when I just do “/thecommand paragraph” it dosent do anything
Type /looking (and nothing else) and the bot should give you a list of options. Choose the one you want. Hit Enter. It'll give you a form to fill out.
If it isn't working, you may need to update your Discord client and ensure you have embeds enabled in your settings.
Ohhh that’s how you do it? Ok
can someone teach how to make an character in private?
Hi i just joined this server im looking for a dm and someone to help create a character
me also
I have one question I got a homebrew magic item that puts my charisma at +11. I use dnd Beyond, is there any way to get the modifier above a 10
A good question for #ddb-support.
Ok thanks very much
Is it more common to use roll20 or dndbeyond to make/store your character sheet? I'm curious because like I bought the player's handbook in physical but now if I want to get it on dndbeyond, then it costs me $30. Seems like it would make more sense to just do it on roll20? Curious what the standard practice is.
looking for someone to teache how to play
Both are fairly common. I'm not sure you could definitively say one was more likely than the other.
If you have the physical PHB, you can always add content to DDB through homebrew, but that's time-intensive.
It is less time-intensive to add things to Roll20 character sheets.
DnD beyond is prettier, Roll20 is more customizable.
honestly i prefer using dungeon master vault, easy, simple, and you can edit/build on the fly
content is free and you can do more then just make characters
My thinking was also if we are already playing in roll20, then why not just use the roll20 one?
nods
That seems sensible.
Thanks for the help
hello, guys, never played DND and dont know the rules, and i dont have people to teach me and what not. i was wondering if there was a way to play online with people or if its only a board game. Thanks for the help!
Yep! Plenty of ways to play online, from just using things like dicord and theater of mind, to VTTs (Virtual Tabletops) where you can also have maps and such
Hello I'm just starting out on playing dnd does anybody know how to play online
thats what im trying to figure out to
@silver cliff has anybody answered you
thanks, do i have to have the set and stuff with me
i got this, i guess it kind of makes since
i guess via discord
Okay then
ye
@cobalt frigate and where would I go for that
Go for what?
The vtts
It's typically the DMs who set up the VTTs (such as Roll20, owlbear.rodeo, FantasyGrounds, and FoundryVTT).
So would I go to them to play

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted. You can use the thread attached to the post or send the user a direct message.
To post your own instead, simply type /looking-for, select the channel you want, and send.
With that said, some VTTs have looking for game options of their own, so it is worth checking those out
Okay thanks for the help I appreciate it
are people always looking for players, or does it depend on the time
@cobalt frigate yep I'm trying to play and a friend says he plays over discord
@silver cliff are you looking for others to play with
At some level there are folks looking for players (see #looking-for-players and also #looking-for-community)
But not every DM and group is looking to add new players.
Yeah that’s true, I didn’t think about that. I will stick to games I know how to play. Thanks for the help
Im new to DnD and plan to try and run a campaign with a group of friends also new to DnD. I have a question though, since i plan to use a pre-made/official one shot what do i do if the players get off track? I dont want to railroad or force them to do things they dont want to, but also dont want to get completely off track. Any advice would help and is appreciated 😄
is there an interactive tutorial somewhere online for DnD?
So for me, that's a conversation I have during session 0. I make it clear that I expect my players to reasonably follow the plot. The modules (usually) do a fair job of giving you options on how to do things so you have wiggle room, but I find that asking them to reasonably follow the plot, there's a lot less going crazy off path
Looking for a small group and a dm who can host sessions often wanting to play a 5e lvl 4 character, I've been dming a full homebrew system for two years and like to get back to 5e but I have a lot of time on my hand, trying to find a dm who can make it so that you can run solo if needed find that having to rely on a party gets kind of dull when I'd like to be a solo adventure trying to complete his mission and maby go further
There is a guided adventure in the first link here

No problem!
Hello
I'm new to D&D. You can call me Alter.
In fact, I'm new to tabletop in general. I am primarily a video gamer. I briefly played MTG, but it didn't really interest me so I've dropped that. I have D&D related trauma that I'm actively working through, because I want to. The fantasy setting and lore interests me and I love games such as The Elder Scrolls and I'm currently reading Lord of the Rings. I've worked at a tabletop gaming distribution warehouse before, and I'm currently playing my first ever solo campaign with my boyfriend who is helping me overcome my anxieties. Hopefully through this campaign I will become more used to the game and eventually confident enough to join his small group with his family.
My first ever character is named Mila Wanderfoot, a halfling (because they so strongly remind me of Hobbits!) fighter (because my boyfriend suggested it for simplicity's sake for learning the game) who comes from a long line of traveling entertainers - mostly storytellers, poets, singers and instrumentalists. Because of this, she has much knowledge of history and lore and knows a song or story that can relate to (almost) every situation and she can often be found in taverns, inns and squares telling her stories, playing her beloved flute and reciting poetry which onlookers may find both entertaining and educational at times.
I've really become interested in this character personally. I plan on building on her background between sessions and commissioning artwork of her in the future. Therefore, due to my personal connection with this character, I believe I'm due to become hyperfixated on D&D, slowly but surely.
That's why I'm here!! It's nice to meet y'all.
Please be gentle with me, I'm fragile. I hope to both learn lots, and perhaps even make some friends here.
welcome to the server i hope you find your stay and the many of people that will be glad to help you venture into this brand this place, if you need anything please ask. hope you can find some good games to join for the up coming future
Hi I'm new. I joined earlier today. Is there a server or channel where they play games on here? I'm very interested
Can I use Green-Flame Blade on my Flame Blade?
AFAIK, not according to the current rules. Green Flame Blade requires a melee weapon with a value of at least 1 silver piece. The flame blade created by the spell has no intrinsic monetary value. I believe the Green-Flame Blade and Booming Blade spells had that material requirement added specifically so they would no longer stack with spells like Flame Blade or Shadow Blade.
Hi , I’m absolutely new to DND and I was hoping if anyone could guide me
How do I put in my request to look for a DM?
YOu're better off lookign in #looking-for-players and responding to a DM's request for players
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Just Sented out my form for looking for DM
Ok
That's not related to my question...
Sorry going to read it right now
hi i’m bri! i’ve been playing for almost a year but i still feel like a beginner and sometimes wish I could watch games in real time to pick up on some things. is it weird to spectate a campaign instead of playing in it, just to learn??
Yeah it's a bit odd but some DMs would be fine with it
Not at all. Theres a lot of streams of DnD being played
Yeah if you need to learn you can watch DND streams that's how I learned
i never even thought of those, where do you find them??
Twitch has a category for those I believe at least
Yo, you can call me Lance. I’m really new to dnd, like I have never played a actual campaign but I would love to know how to play. Currently I’m making a character rn, and I’m hoping when I’m done I can join someone’s campaign. If anyone can help me build a homebrew race with me, please lmk and we can decide on time and stuff like that if possible.
Just remember that the more "professional" looking livestreams are more likely to be playing a bit fast & loose with the rules for the sake of entertainment. Not that that's a bad thing, but if one of your goals is to learn how to play then it's worth keeping in mind.
got it, thanks everyone!
Also feel free to ask questions in the DND server many people are willing to answer them and help you understand the game more
I would suggest holding off on creating a whole homebrew race until you're more familiar with the game mechanics and balance. Plus, there's no guarantee the group you join will allow homebrew material. Between the various books, there are a LOT of official race options to try out.
I understand the homebrew part, so I will make a character with official ddb stuff. Although, i will take note of that suggestion
Hey if you use Expertise on a skill that has a negative modifier, does it still double?
Expertise means you add double your proficiency bonus instead of just your normal proficiency bonus. That's the only effect it has on the math. You can absolutely be proficient or even have Expertise in skills where your ability modifier is negative, using that proficiency bonus to offset your natural weakness in that area.
Yes. Expertise doubles your proficiency bonus for the skills you choose in it and has no effect on the relevant ability modifier.
For example, if you chose Perception as one of your Expertise skills as a lvl 1 character and you had a Wisdom Score of 8 (-1), before Expertise, your Perception would be -1 from Wis and +2 from your proficiency in Perception and then the +2 would be doubled from Expertise, so -1 + (+2 x 2) or -1 +4 = +3, so your total Perception would be +3.

at the end of an encounter, if the text says to distribute X xp to players for completing, do they still get the xp from the creatures they have slain?
yes
But if a written text is telling you how much xp to give, then you should give that much rather than second-guessing the text and applying more xp than the text instructs to give
The written text has most likely incorporated the xp value of the slain creatures into the suggested xp amount
What's the "easiest" way to get into DnD?
Probably starting with the basic rules options, the free Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure, and getting a few friends together to just figure things out in a really laidback way
Wizards of the Coast D&D ESSENTIAL KIT BOXED for teen and adult, pack of 1 https://amzn.eu/d/694nv1d is this good to get started with d and d ? I’m an absolute noob who is currently playing a beyond d&d campaign with a paladin .
Yes it’s a great box to start with
Cool
question ababout cantrip versatility
After my cleric reaches 4th level, will he get to change cantrips every day after a long rest,as long as he is level 4?
or will he only get to change cantrip for only once right after reaching level 4?
Just 4th 8th 12th 16th levels if your DM is using the optional rules
i get that part
I was confused as to if I would only get to swap cantrip only one time while im level 4
ig im failing to express what im teying to say
i know that I would get cantrip versatility again at 8th Level and 12 and 1616th
but What I wanted to know was Will I get the chance to swap cantrip as many times I want after long rest for the duration of my time as a level 4 cleric?
or is it a one time thing that you can only do once after reaching level 4 untill you reach level 8 again?
i wowould like to experiment with different cantrips if i get cantrip versatility
and decide which one serves me better
which is Why I would like the option to change cantrip every time after a long rest after getting cantrip versatility option whenever I get ASI
No it’s a one time thing on levelling up
If a DM allows me, can i have a Dragonborn with a scale color that doesn't match its damage type? Like a black dragonborn that spits fire?
just out of curiosity, if i had a campaign idea but didnt want to DM for it, would this be the place to bring it up to try to find if anyone who has more DMing experience is interested in the idea?
If your dm allows you, you can do whatever you want
Got it
but generally reskinning (or reflavoring) stuff is non-problematic in dnd, as long as mechanics don't change
should be no problem whatsoever
you can post dm related stuff in #dm-discussion for further discussion, but looking for a dm to run something would be #750812887697588356
even then it's a rather tough call to a) find a dm and b) find one that's willing to run something that you came up with
i'm sure paying money would help
thats probably all true
i encourage giving dming a go as well. it's fun too
So as long as i give a acceptable reason for it (like, for example, it was a birth deffect or a child between a red and a black dragonborn), there is no problem with it?
im definitely trying to DM, im just having issues with finding fans of what the entire thing about the campaign is about ^^"
You dont even need a particular reason if you wish. you can just politely ask “hey dm, i want to play a black scaled fire breathing dragonborn. i’ll just use the red dragonborn’s stats, is that okay?”
and then the dm is probably fine with it unless it collides with their game’s lore or something
if you want an in-world reason that’s great too - as long as you don’t mess with the mechanical rules of whatever you’re doing most people will be ok with it
Didn't know it was that easy lol
I mean, I'm not experienced enough to talk, really, but the key to any successful game is always communication, so yeah, most the time it is just easy like that and people overthink over nothing
yep yep exactly
What’s a good 5th edition character sheet I can print? All the ones I’ve found online are low quality and print pretty pixelated.
Thanks
so i when is the next campaign
All the time, but we don’t play here. Use the LFG channels to find a game.
What’s the best resources for learning about the lore of the 5e world? Where it gets confusing to me is where things intersect in terms of traditional 5e, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Critical Role since they are all official settings as far as I understand?
Like if I wanted to learn about elf lore, where is a good place to start? Reading the Player’s Handbook?
Yeah the PHB is pretty solid for just the basic, typically generic lore you can apply to most settings. You don't really need to worry about setting lore unless playing in it, and then you can read the specific setting lore from it's books.
Each setting will have their own lore. Probably safer to pick one and read up on it in particular. Exandria is the newest of the three you listed so has the least published stuff, Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance, significantly more
How does it work if you were to play a campaign where the DM is like all official content is fair game? Like if I was an elf from Forgotten Realms and someone was an elf from Critical Role? Just an example, I don’t really know if that makes sense. Like does the lore just kind of blend together at that point and you have to make allowances? Or the lore really is fleshed out enough and that will make 100% sense?
In general, you are unlikely to have a campaign that has PCs from different settings. Your DM will probably pick one, or have their own setting and use that lore
What if they do an official campaign and say all official content is okay to use? Or is that just so bizarre that there’s no precedent? And people typically recommend only picking stuff from one setting?
They could allow all material, but that doesn't mean you'd have characters from mixed settings.
i cant find LFG channel
They would usually just add that to the one world they're running. Like allowing Echo Knight, but that character has nothing to do with the Kryn Dynasty in Wildemount.
Normally mechanical character options are separate from setting lore. For example, I have no issues with a drow PC in my Forgotten Realms based Lost Mines of Phandelver game, but if the player insists that their PC is actually from Exandria's Krynn Dynasty then that PC isn't joining
Hey we both went with Kryn Dynasty references lol
your dm probably means they allow any races, classes, feats, and subclasses from official books, not necessarily the lore from different settings
Oo ya you are right. Not the lore, but like if someone is a race from a particular setting, I guess I just wondered how that typically meshed with a campaign and races from other campaigns.
Sorry if my question is not worded well.
most races exist in most settings, except for like... warforged? In that case i'd probably ask the dm
Thank you 🙂
What does the 'opendnd' mean that some have in they nn?
They are protesting annoying corporate controversy surrounding the company that makes dnd. If you're interested in that kind of stuff and feel like getting angry, its worth a google
There's also the #ogl-discussion-archive for that, but the short of it was WotC wanted to change a legal document to better protect future D&D products, but in doing so would have caused massive legal issues for multiple other TTRPGs that were dependent on that legal document, and it created a backlash.
And that's the 'short' version. It's def a lot more complicated and nuanced than just that, hence the entire channel where everyone became lawyers for a month. But result was that the legal document (OGL) stayed unchanged, some things became creative commons, and maaybe there might be more stuff to come under creative commons. Some people like complaining though and want a fully open source D&D more than it currently is.
Any new players Wana maybe join a game?
I have 1 slot available.anf we can discuss things in dm and we can see if you work out

I've had this experience a few times where it seems like bardic inspiration or paladin auras aren't really used because players are busy doing their own things and can't really be bothered to remember your traits in addition to their own, which is fair.
It just makes me feel like I shouldn't make characters that do those sorts of buffs, but I'm wondering what others think.
I know that (generic) inspiration is often forgotten about, both as a game mechanic and as a resource to spend once earned. It might be easier to give folks a token to sit near their dice if playing in person as a reminder about inspiration of any sort. Online, though, if I gave the inspiration (whether as a bard or as the DM), I remind players about it. They never seem put off by the reminder. If your group is, though, it may be worth trying different roles.
In in-person play, one thing you can do is set the inspiration die apart from the others so it serves as a physical reminder. You could do this while playing online as well, by placing a physical die near your computer or something like that, assuming you have physical dice.
Yeah that's the other thing... I don't want to come off as nagging, but I often do feel like it's been a while and if they'd use it already I could throw another one out.
But all in all it just makes me think I should make a bard that has other uses for inspiration.
Yeah maybe having a cute token I give them would be kinda cool.
Some of the bard subclasses that can spend inspiration in other ways are pretty neat. You can also enlist the DM to remind players about those features. Granted, the DM has a lot to juggle anyway, but it's a possibility.
Yeah, for sure. I don't want to over complicate things. Glamour bard looks cool as hell anyway, may try that, haha.
I tried to get into a game with a dm, but today a lot of the group left (this was via discord) so i left too. we never got to start the campaign and we only did one voice chat while making characters and explaining the setting
That sucks man, the only thing harder than finding a group is getting them to show up lol.
It doesn't seem uncommon, unfortunately, for folks to just ghost entirely when organizing online games.
Good day, there is something I like to ask about, I been interested in this game for a while and decided to read the rules to hopefully start playing.
Having said that, I am having trouble understanding the process when you perform an attack, I know first you roll to see if it hits and if it does you calculate damage, i'm having trouble understanding how you calculate both.
we were pinging the dm a lot when the planned day for the start came up, but he left the gc and then we just got sad 😭
Had it happen IRL too... Talking to a DM, suddenly no response. Two days later I told them it's cool if things changed or if there's no room for me but just let me know what's going on... Nothing.
Don't even know what I said wrong 🤷
this group also had two changeling bards, i was one of them, and we had big plans off the bat
. thought about changing into two dragonborn and calling ourselves Imagine Dragons for the fun of it
To determine if you hit, you roll a 20-sided die (a d20) and add the necessary modifiers (usually a bonus from a relevant stat and proficiency). If that total meets or exceeds the target's armor class, it's a hit. The damage is decided by the weapon or spell itself.
It's probably not about you. People flake for mysterious reasons. Just move on.
Handbook Helper is a series that has some great beginner info:
Attacking and damage are two separate rolls.
First, you roll to attack, you roll a d20 (20-sided die) and add whatever relevant modifiers you have, if the result is equal to or higher than the target's AC (Armor Class), then it hits.
If the attack hits, then you roll damage. A short sword, for example does 1d6 damage, plus whatever relevant modifiers you might have.
Oh, I thought armor class affected the damage roll, thank you that makes much more sense
Thank you
armor class is usually seen as a way to avoid damage
There are some ttrpgs in which armor has a reductive ability vs damage. D&D is not one of those, however.
like dodging or blocking
Thank you
Yeah, when you think about armor (outside d&d) you think it reduces damage, that why I got confused
It's a bit of a fluid "just go with it" concept, kinda like hit points.
If a rogue and a paladin both have 20AC and an attack roll is 19, the rogue would dive out of the way whereas the paladin* would take the hit on their shoulder pad or something and "reduce" the damage that way (to 0 😅 )
Ok, makes sense.
This is more the narration of combat rather than it's mechanics, however
Mechanically, it's as simple as "meet the target number with your die roll, you hit."
What's contributing to the total AC isn't relevant to whether a hit is successful or not.
Narratively, you can go buck wild with interpreting all that.
Hey, just to check I understand the damage roll.
I created a character using the app, a fighter, and I was lucky enough to draw a 18 which I put in strength giving me +4 modifier.
If I hit with a Shortsword (1d6) and I get a 4, I add the +4 strength modifier and another +2 of proficiency as a level 1 fighter, for a total of 10 damage, is this correct?
You do not add Proficiency Bonus to the damage roll
You do add it to the attack roll
Oh, is to the hit roll?
Correct
For the attack roll, you add both the Str Mod and the Prof Bonus
(Which is called the "Attack Bonus")
Only the Str Mod is added to the damage roll
Alright, thank you very much
Sure, I was just explaining how the concepts of avoiding an attack and having armor that protects you from attack are condensed into one stat.
I'm a complete newcomer when it comes to DND (・ัω・ั)
ive played like one session that was cut short due to traveling and i only understand how to make a character sheet with help
Are there specific things you're looking to understand?
nothing specifically currently, it's all so overwhelming so i don't know where to focus
i guess existing lore and rules would be a good place to start but i get embarrassed to ask about basic stuff
Did you read the Basic Rules?
There's nothing to be embarrassed about — this is why this channel exist for new players to ask questions about the game.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

👋
What happens if a PC dies?
They are dead.
Usually you'd make a new character and work with the dm to write them in.
But sometimes the party might have access to resurrection magic so your character could come back.
Lol nice
Or bringing them back could become a whole adventure of its own.
Guys can i play as a robot?
I didn't see it in DnD beyond but i heard about the warforged and now im confused
Warforged aren't "robots" nor Constructs. However, you will have to ask your DM if they're allowed in their campaign setting.
Yes you can
Autognomes are closer to the traditional image of robots and can be found in Spelljammer
Oh yeah sorry about that. They were made with wood too right? And i think it said they were "told" not programmed. Sorry.
Warforged are sentient/sapient beings that look like Constructs but they have souls.
Hi, everyone, my name is Mary I’m starting a new online D and D group and I’m looking for players and a dungeon master since I’m starting out until I know the just of the game.
Lots of people treat warforged as robots, which isn't accurate for a number of reasons, but it's doable, for sure. Autognome is a better fit, I feel.
They're an Eberron specific race so again ask your DM if you can play one
See #find-a-game for instructions on using our LFG channels.

If i were to play D&D online, do I need my own dice and board?
What specific tools you need is going to vary depending on your specific group.
There are online dice rollers you can use, though, even right here in Discord.
(You can head to #ddb-avrae-commands and try !roll 1d20+2, for example.)
This article covers a few of the more popular tools for playing online, though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Playing online, you most likely wouldn't need dice at all because you'd probably be playing on a VTT (Virtual Table Top), which will have a dice roller as part of the program.
D&D isn't a board game, so you'll never need a board, whether playing online or in person.
And maby pen and paper if u prefer notetaking by hand, or u can make a document for that stuff
Hello! Im very new to dnd, i basically only know that u can make up a character and a story line. I have always been interested, but every time i try to get into it i get very overwhelmed. So, can someone please teach me how to play? im in desperate need of a teacher!
ps. I genuinely know nothing so the teacher has to be very patient with me 🙂
pps. Google sadly did not help, i was very confused lol
thank you!
Have you looked at the free basic rules?
There’s a short interactive adventure here that’s a good introduction.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
No, sorry, where can i find those?
I’ll take a look at that, tysm <33
Then you can find the Basic Rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Should I get the starter or essential kit?
Im down for hopping in a call in a few min if u want
There’s two different Starter Sets. Which one are you looking at?
There is the D&D essentials kit
Right. Dragon of Icespire Peak.
And the D&D starter set, Dragons of storm wreck isle
This one?
So the Essentials Kit (Dragon of Icespire Peak) features player-made characters in an adventure from levels 1-6, and has some online supplemental adventures to carry the story further.
Okay so I’ll get that one
The new Starter Set (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) features five pre-made characters in an adventure from levels 1-3.
Can I play alone?
And then there’s the old Starter Set (Lost Mine of Phandelver) which run player-made characters from levels 1-5. That one’s available on D&D Beyond at no cost.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
They only had the first to at target
The core rules aren’t really designed to be run solo, but there are fan-made rules for doing so.
Would u mind texting actually? Im already in a call with someone lol

Why not ask questions here?
can some one help me look for dm?
i meant making a post
Did you read the instructions pinned at the top of the page?
i did a while ago
when creating a character, how will it get buffs with its stats? is there money? or is my character already at the cap of how strong it will be?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?

can i be a peace domain cleric that is "evil" or at the very least just not lawful good but maybe lawful evil? like i want everyone to be at peace and those that get in the way of that peace should be removed
5e has no alignment restrictions mechanically speaking. If your dm is cool with that flavouring, go for it
what do you think would be an interesting concept? being purely good is boring but not sure what route i wanna go
I like the idea of an evil peace domain cleric... after all, death is pretty peaceful...
Frankly, you should ask your DM if being evil is an option to begin with, regardless of your class.
Don't play the alignment but play your character's Bonds, Flaws, and Ideals.
Evil by definition are selfish, which kind of goes against the grain of a Peace domain cleric whose feature abilities tend to be about helping others.
More befitting of a Grave Cleric
Yeah thats true
Could work it out as a Cleric of Kelemvor somehow, probably
Any campaign recruiting? I am new but understand some. Time zone is Atlantic Time. (Canada)

Hello
Hi
Hey
You said hello, so I greeted you back
this is my idea for a backgroun so maybe not evil but more "dark"
Seraphina Blackmantle was born into a family with a long lineage of service to the gods, residing in the once-great metropolis of Caelum's Fall. Over the years, as the city fell into decay and corruption, its citizens lost faith in the gods and turned to more sinister powers for protection. The Blackmantle family, once well-respected for their piety and devotion, found themselves cast aside and disgraced. It was during these tumultuous times that Seraphina's fascination with peace and serenity was kindled, a flickering light of hope amidst the chaos of her daily life. As Seraphina reached adulthood, her desire for peace intensified. She saw the suffering and misery that engulfed her city, and she felt a growing sense of urgency to restore order and tranquility.
This is for sure some kind of good because they are seeking the betterment of others. But it is a very interesting premise.\
Lawful even.
yeah i just wanna make my cleric not that sterotypical lets all sit in a field and make daisy crowns but that i want a world of peace and silence
which vaguelly reminds me of some plot in a show but i cant remember what
Did you want it to be evil or just dark?
not like evil evil but like they want a world of peace and those that get in the way of peace should be removed. could go the route that only if their bad or the very strict even if a person is good if they get in the way of peace they should be removed. if that makes sense
A "greater good" kind of deal then?
yeah
Then I would say chaotic good, you want the world to be at peace and no law will stop you from doing that
This is pretty firmly in #character-discussion at this point, so you might wanna move the conversation over there.
But its kind of a mute point anyway, just a good thing to keep in mind while RPing them

Okay let's get back on topic 😉
Watched some videos and I’m kind of excited to play a game!
Hello
Welcome!
Hi
Would a Nereid or a dragon turtle be suitable patrons for a fathomless warlock? It just says entity of the ocean or elemental plane of water, so I wasn’t sure if those creatures would be suitable for patrons
Up to your DM, really.
Yea both of those could work, its really up to you and the DM, let them know the theme of your character how you want to flavor them and they'll help you pick one out.
Thanks. I always feel uncertain about what’s suitable for warlock patrons other than the obviously defined ones (ie all the arch devils, arch demons, and genies)
It usually doesn't hurt to ask. You may not get what you want exactly, of course, but you won't know that if you never communicate your wants.
I’ll be helping my players make new characters for the first time soon. They’ve used premade so far and I was curious if there was anything I should advise for a paladin, moon Druid, barbarian or warlock. Im quite new myself.
Each class has a quick-start guide in it with a few suggestions.
But what I’d really suggest is to just do what you can, then have them share their characters in #character-discussion for more specific feedback.
Hi guys, even though I've known DnD for a long time and been reading stuff about it here and there, I never really had any chance to play with (and none of my friends into this). So I'm an absolutely beginner who finally has opportunities to try the game. I have read articles on dndbeyond, tried to create my first character, but I'm wondering what's next? What should I do if I want to engage into my first game? Thanks
Thank you very much

Hello I'm new anyone care to help me
I think it's gonna be a bit challenging to find a game for new players as I scrolled through #looking-for-community but most that I saw didn't say newcomer friendly, so I'm not even sure if I could participate 😂
#looking-for-players just ask in the thread under the adds
hey im new to dnd and im interested in learning

Hello
I'm interested in trying out table rpgs
Never played one like ever
My friends told me to go here
Hey there. It looks like you’re trying to use the command to fill out the application so your request can get posted in the #750812887697588356 channel, but it’s not being filled out correctly.
I recommend reading the full instructions in #find-a-game and going forward from there.
That's up to you, and/or your DM.
does monks have any bonuses when rolling??
Just the normal proficiency bonus and ability modifiers.
do you know whats better for monk in race? wood elf or variant human? or is there better options??
I suggest picking any race/species that sounds interesting to you.
there's going to be some benefits of certain species, but nothing is make-or-break enough that it should dissuade you from picking just what seems the most fun and interesting to you
If your just doing something casual pick what you want. If your trying to optimize however anything that adds to dex would be a good pick
Wood elf is the best choice with a natural increase to base speed which makes you faster in the long run, an increase to wis along with the natural +2 to dex that an elf gives. Plus your good at hiding and have other natural proficiencies, although those don’t matter as much
Stout halfings also good for the lucky trait
Hill dwarfs give a bonus to wisdoms and increases permanent hp by 1 with every level
Idk if this is the right place for this but Hi I’m very new to the whole dnd thing! I’ve never played and know very little about the rules and stuff but I’m looking to learn cause the game looks so fun! and I’ve had past friends play and tell me about their campaign and I’d love to play and learn

What's D&D beyond for exactly? I tried it today and it has so many functions. I couldnt figure how to start a game lol i have lost mines of phan
Depends, for DM's its a rules directory with every monster, spell, and book in one place
for players, its a simple interactive character builder
for players it is where u can store charecters
So it's not a game in of it self? But more like a tool kit?
I thought a map would pop up and we could move around characters or something
More or less, yeah.
yeah, you can play the game entirely for free with pen and paper if you want
it's a digital toolkit that lets you read the books and automate the use of their content in various tools
the rules are a part of the creative commons
One thing i couldnt quite figure out is how do I make the game "visible" for the players? The world, the monsters etc. Do I show them images? Or during encounters, is there "playing board"? Or is it all just in the mind?
it can be either
That's up to the DM.
if you want to share visuals online, people often use what's called a VTT (virtual tabletop)
WOTC put out some stunning art work
ah, does WOTC have one or what do people use?
Some of the common ones are Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, and Foundry.
WoTC doesn't have one yet, but it's in development.
There isn't an official one yet, one is in development though
Some popular options are:
- Foundry
- roll20
- Fantasy Grounds
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Tabletop Simulator
- Talespire
roll20 is pretty easy to learn and i belive the most used
Owlbear is probably the best free one and talespire is probably the best paid one
i have not heard of the others tho
Owlbear is no-frills and straightforward. Roll20's free version has more bells and whistles but has a steeper learning curve.
I will check them out thanks!
Roll20 kind of shows its age, too. Not very mobile-friendly.
I just read about WOTC vtt. It's like a whole 3D board game kinda thing
yeah, Talespire is similar
Very fancy. Wonder how expensive it will be
Hi.
Am looking for players to play with and i don't know how to make that post on #looking-for-players
At this point, there are no official prices or other monetization information for the D&D Virtual Game Space.
@gray sand Head to #find-a-game. It has detailed instructions how to use our looking for channels.
@inner thistle actually i did try that but i don't know how to post it on #looking-for-players .
Since i can't type there i don't know how that works.
You use the commands shown in #find-a-game and type them in #1075498333705089084

Hi 👋
New here! English is not my first language but I love D&D, hope find some new friends and new people to play
Hey guys! I'm new to the DnD space and I'm eager to meet new players and build a sense of community. I run a live stream and we have recently decided to add a weekly campaign to the mix. I'm really interested in anybody who would be interested in joining our group of friends
Welcome! We've got a few channels for finding a party. Head over to #find-a-game for instructions.
Yeah, I'm reading that now. Thank you for the speedy response and insight
Is DnD essentially a visual novel with turn based combat?
Not really.
Group storytelling and the randomness of the dice means the story can go in all sorts of unexpected directions, unlike a book.
And there may or may not be anything visual.
But the combat is indeed turn-based.
D&D isn't linear. It's up to the players where (and when) their characters go. The DM and players are co-storytellers in their adventures.
And there is a lot of choice for where to go and what to do (within reason). Unlike a visual novel, there are usually few (if any) pre-programmed paths.
good afternoon
i am new new to DnD . ive always wondered about playing the game, but i was to ignorant to try the game back then.
i was wondering if anyone wass looking to add a new player
See #find-a-game for instructions on using our recruiting channels.
Could it be played in a more linear fashion for beginners though?
Sure, it's possible to offer players fewer choices. Maybe not none, though: part of the fun of D&D is having it be somewhat open-ended and responsive to the players' ideas.
The players decide what their characters do and where to go. The DM offers situations for the players to act/react to.
If you want "linear" and less sandbox, perhaps start with a dungeon crawl.
D&D is about improv — DMs and players act/react with each other's decisions.
I see, thanks!
Hence, roleplaying.
Ty ty my bro
hi guys
Hello
im more of a newcomer to the community in general than to the game
ok
I am supposed to start on Sunday and I'm learning about the game. I have been watching Critical Role. It seems fun even if it is moving really slow
Games move at different paces. It's important to find people who have roughly the same idea of fun that you do.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet or at least watch Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube?
I plan on doing some reading up to Sunday, but my friends told me to just hop in. I have a feeling that it's not going to be that simple. I'll see if I can find this handbook helper. I saw a video about it but I don't think I learned TOO much from it. It seems like there are some levels of complexity I have to dismantle
Agreed. As fun as Critical Role is, it’s important to remember these are professional voice actors running a business, with so many people orchestrating behind the scenes. Get with people who are similar in mindset of fun, and remember to have fun!! Don’t sweat the small stuff, and just make sure you’re enjoying the adventure
Just got the Rulebook gift set on Amazon used for almost $90, sleeve is pretty much trashed, books are at 95% HP with few scratches and marks, but they're foil, which I didn't know, which is nice, but the same day I bought them I see some blog news saying they're gonna release a new set, also saying that the DM Guide book sucks, and the Monster Manual is missing monsters apparently. Should I return them and wait for the new set? Been watching to buy this set for a while to read up on, learn and have all the tools to DM for the first time.
What is the name of the rulebook?
I’d return them based on the physical quality of the product unless you weren’t expecting them in new condition.
As far as the content goes they’re still great tools and will be useful with the new content being released (since it’s all compatible).
The new DMG will likely just be better and more coherently organized.
It's the Core Rulebook Gift set, the DM's Guide, Player's Handbook, and Monster Manual, and a GM Screen.
I agree with Robut: if the condition is important to you, return them on that basis. The company is promising that the rules refresh will be compatible with the current edition (5e); how that'll work in practice, we don't have enough info on.
However, lots of people like 5e and will continue to play that even with the new version's release. The community around that edition specifically won't just vanish.
It’ll be quite a while until the „new” ones, but it sucks to have battered books. that being said they’re all useful books for running the game. there’s magic items in the DMG for you to hand out if nothing else
hey what do i need to get into dnd?

im very new my dad played it back when he was young and i want to try it out
Your dad probably played a very different game.
Which edition did he play?
Well, that's the early 80s so that could be B/X and/or AD&D
Heyy I’m new to dnd any tips :)
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Yeah I’m stuck on the role playing aspect my first session is a week away and I’m scared I won’t be able to get into character
Not everyone is an actor. Start by talking in third person.
I know how to play and I’ve made loads of characters, I know in theory just not in practice
Player: "My character, Bob, does this. He then says, 'I like shrimp sandwiches.'"
Just like your characters, experience makes you better (also, learn from your mistakes).
I tend to act in 3rd person and speak in 1st person. I'm still new to it as well and that part specifically intimidates me. I've only had one session, but I don't think you should stress about it, it'll just come to you once you're there, I think!
Sometimes I freeze up and feel lost as to what to do with information or dialog. In that case, I will either turn to my traveling companion (played by my DM; my boyfriend) or I will ask him for advice as to what I should do, as a newbie.
^ That's a good point. You can always defer to other players or the DM, either for them to take the spotlight from you or to help you while you're in it.
It's a game and folks show up to have fun. That generally means trying to keep everyone involved and feeling good about what's happening. It's absolutely easy to worry about before you do it, but if you know how to imagine, you'll be fine (even if it might start out bumpy).
Plus, if you don't know how to imagine, you can get better at it. A writer I like says that your level in a given skill is tied to how many years you've been doing it. You haven't played D&D before? You're not even level 1 yet, which means you have tons of room to grow and develop!
Hello everyone I’m am new to dnd but my friend is a very experienced dm he said to me if I buy a campaign he will run it for me and I was looking at storm kings thunder I was just wondering if it was any good
Hi, welcome fellow newcomer
Greetings
How experienced is your DM?
He’s been playing for 7 years
Then STK should be a good choice. It apparently needs a fair amount on the DM side to be workable, but it can be done and there is (so I'm told) some really cool content in it.
But I would look at reviews of all the 5e modules and see if any of them stand out to you rather than picking one at random.
Ok cool I’ll have a look now
I can’t do voices well and get anxiety when I try to in front of others, so I pretty much only play in 3rd person and we still have lots of fun. Even with the people who get more into acting their characters. One day I hope to reach the step where I can act my character more though.
But the point being, just have fun with everyone
@south pebble did you see that cruise?!
Hello, sorry but this it probably a stupid question, but do you recommend I chose a race from the PHB, or does it not make to big of a difference in complication if I choose from all the races on the DND beyond website?
Yes I did, it looks really fun!

I'd pick whatever race seems fun. But also check with your D&D group as their may be reasons to not pick a particular race or specific races may not be appropriate for the game world/campaign.
I have no DND group as of right now, i just have a general idea of the rules and how the game is played, my school has no clubs or anything close to dnd. So I figured I should make a decent character before starting
Oh go right ahead and make whatever character you want - I'm just noting that sometimes groups/games will not allow specific races for whatever reason.
You think a human is a viable option?
Yep - any race is fine generally.
I guess I’ll choose that for now, and once I get a better grasp of the game, I’ll create more characters
Hello, I've just started D&D today and hope to fit into the community one day
So what will I need to do to get started?
Well we have some good resources to help get you started in the pinned message here in the channel (or you can type ?new and the bot will post it for you here in channel).
Welcome!
I read the descriptions of both the human and variant humans, but i still dont understand the diffrence, do you guys know?
Yes - normal human race gets +1 racial/species bonus to every attribute.
Variant human gets a feat (special ability) at level 1, proficiency in one skill, and then a +1 to an attribute score and another +1 to another attribute score.
oh okay got you, which one do you think is better?
i was thinking the variant human
what is a common language for humans to speak?
common
the language us called common?
Yes
Yes there is a language named common
It is named that because it is common
And easy to learn
Hence why it is common
fair enough
And there is one named undercommon as well. Because it is common for D&D australians
Jk it’s called undercommon because of people living in the UnderDark
Which is the place under the regular world
Caves and stuff right
should i start my character at level 1?
Ask your Dungeon Master. If you're new and they are new, yes you will usually start at level one, but they may choose to start you at a higher level if they want
i do not currently have a group or dungeonmaster, should i find one first?
before finishing my character
Usually yes, since your DM might have preferences on what books and rules your allowed to use for your character and can give you lore and information that can help you build your character
okay that makes since, seem i had everything backwards
#750812887697588356 is a great place to start!
how many Dms is normaly? one or do people normally have a few groups that play with
As many as you can play.
Yes this is the way
Any DnD players around Downtown Minneapolis MN?
Please use the #looking-for channels (see #find-a-game) and please be careful and not ask for or share any personally identifiable information.
I'm a first timer, and I joined a group of experienced players in a nineth level adventure. There is SO MUCH READING to learn the game system and the characters many mechanics at level 9.
It feels like the other players doing dumb stuff gets elaborated on and narratively rewarded by the dm way more than my paladin trying to be helpful to npcs, how do I make my actions more theatrically compelling for the dm to engage with my actions?
Well I'd check with your group actually as they can provide tips and suggestions to help your character "fit in" with what's happening. Also most likely they don't have any issues with your playstyle and understand that you're still learning.
First of all, good on you for diving in straight to lvl 9 but that is indeed a TON to take in and consider.
Hi
I'd suggest focusing those helpful activities toward your own party members? NPCs typically help push the story along in different ways and different directions, but it's your party's story
For example, one player cast some kind of aoe chaos/confusion spell on a crowded train car and we spent ages dealing with the consequences of that
Re: helping the party, this is what I believe is known as 5 strangers have barely even brushed shoulders with each other in a bar (train) so far opening
It's super entertaining, but I need to figure out how to steal some of the limelight
Hello….
I want to get into DND! I started reading the rules but it was a bit too much/boring for me (I have adhd). is there a way to learn the rules better for that like a video or something?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
I'll check it out! TYSM!
Yeah, I didn't even get through part 1 of 4 of the basic rules.
Eventually you need to because the first four chapters is on character creation. The videos aren't that detailed.
So how do we keep track of our character levels?
Your character sheet.
I want to buy my own Player's Handbook. My boyfriend has one I could read. But I feel like I'd just be happier to buy my own. I like to collect things. I've already started multiple lists of D&D books and things I want to eventually get myself.
I'm curious, are we allowed to look for people local to us? Not specific addresses but like asking for people within the same town and building relationships with them so that we CAN find people to play real games with? I'm not a fan of trying to do everything digital, and I'd love to talk to people in real life who play, but I can't find any local groups or anything.
I quit about chapter 4-5. Is that good enough for the videos to hold enough weight?
If I remember correctly it should be because most of it is starting builds?
New to DnD myself, and upon starting the players handbook for version 4, I realize that I have SO many questions, and then with NEWER versions and people with their own rules...it gets to be more than I want to type out everyday hahaha
What do you mean "version 4"? 4th Edition?
Yes, I mean 4th edition
Okay. You do know that 5th Edition is the current edition that most people play?
If you have questions about 4E then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
I do, that's what I was referencing f when I said "newer versions" 😅, I wasn't positive if they have multiple version of the 5th edition or what, because I find a lot of conflicting information when I try to search things. For instance, mixing races and what is actually allowed and has official stats, and what's I think it was called "homebrewed" which sounds like house rules or homemade to me
There have been more than a few supplements, such as Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, that have added optional / updated rules.
Ah I see, and out of curiosity, is there a specific channel we use to ask for like local players/mentors? Or city wide groups that may exist? I'm trying to explore the community as much as possible 😁, and make some new friends while I'm at it!
Hello! 👋
So anyways is the base AC still 12?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ok
Read the rules, everything is answered there. If you played 3.5E then it shouldn't be that different. There are very few modifier stacks (advantage/disadvantage instead of modifier stacks).
Yeah I also played about 600 hours of Neverwinter Nights so they modified 3.5 just slightly
Mostly just the fact that swimming isn't a thing in NwN
And falling
A CRPG isn't the same as TTRPG due to various limitations (such as the game engine and designers)
You’re welcome to use any of our game channels below to try and find a local game, but honestly, you might have more luck searching locally: game stores, libraries, etc.
?looking
I do a lot of skimming myself and just reading small bits at a time, jumping around to things that trigger questions in my head. It takes me a bit but I learn more and more over time. I’ll admit more of it is random lore than basic info, but I still learn stuff.
Watching YouTube and talking to friends who play helps me with the less interesting reading though too
Any of them!
that only takes cat forms, usually a housecat
true!
Especially if you’re using newer races without fixed Ability Score Increases.
Or the optional rule that lets you reassign the fixed scores for older races.
I read chapters1-4 of the basic rules before I gave up
But one that increases your Wisdom score will help your spellcasting as a Druid.
I'm watching all of handbooker helper
If you're using older rules where the aiblity scores are set by race, then you probably want to choose a race with a bonus to Wisdom
didn't see anyone with a bonus to wisdom
Hill Dwarf has a bonus to Wis
ok I'll look into that
Most dms allow you to move the scores now.
I'm using The 5e rules
Wood elf has a bonus to Wisdom
They are 5e rules
wood elf?
Wood elf, it's a sub race of elf
Elf in PHB can be high, wood or drow.
Are you using the Players Handbook or the free stuff from DnDBeyond?
That's from PHB
I'm going to be a wood elf
Cool beans.
free stuff
but I'm gonna uh
watch handbooker helper instead
Wood elf fits pretty thematically for druid as well
Any race can be made to fit easily, but wood elf druid is a very easy fit
dnd beyond is great, dont get me wrong, but i just dont want to re-purchase content I already have🥲 . i guess nothing is stopping me from having a seperate sheet of paper from what it wont let me do lol
wrong button
why did the d&d beyond ad on YouTube tell me that I wanted to be a druid when I wanted to be a druid how
spooky noises start to play
either coincidence or the adbots are watchign you
If you’ve got the physical books, you can use D&D Beyond’s homebrew tools to add that content instead.
Or you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
should every player multiclass?
Honestly, you should only multiclass if you have a specific reason to
I saw somewhere on youtube that the most op builds are achieved by multiclassing and that generally pure warlock builds are bad
Well, I'll rephrase that - multiclassing works better from a mechanical standpoint if you have a specific reason for doing so. While you certainly can multiclass just for s&g, there are consequences to multiclassing, such as delayed abilities, loss of end-game abilities, needing to spread your ability scores thinner (depending on the build).
Another important point is that multiclassing is considered to be an optional rule, so a DM would be within their rights to forbid multiclassing at all
Pure warlock builds aren't "bad," they're just not going to benefit from some of the crazy builds people make. If what you're going for is the "most OP thing you can find" then yeah, some weird build that's taking advantage of some rules loopholes or a particular multiclass synergy might be more powerful
But also keep in mind that some DMs might view attempts to break the game as adversarial play
You should be honest with your DM about what a potential build you want to make.
I'd also caution against builds that come fully online at lvl 20 because chances are, you're not making it to lvl 20. The vast majority of games fizzle around lvl 10.
Hi guys iv never played DnD before always been very keen to try it any tips???

Ok?
go trough the things the post mentions, read the basic rules by clickin on to the link. When youre done, find people to play with and have fun!
Hey, I'm new to dnd. I'm supposed to be playing my first game this summer. Done some reading up on it and watched a good amount of stuff. Was wondering if anyone had any advice?
Do you have a copy of the player's manual? I'm pretty sure there's a basic version available for free
The free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I dove head first into the game recently, the best way I can put it is that the more reading you do the faster gameplay will become natural.
Also, experienced players at your table and the dm are valuable guides.
It might be a couple of sessions before you fully grasp the basics, but in the meantime they can get you playing and making actions that are sensible while you read and contextualize that reading with play
I think watching games helps you understand the flow to it. But home games are way different than any actual play shows.
Have fun, be cool, remember you're not the main character, pay attention in combat and try to plan what you're going to do - don't be the person who waits to look at the menu until they're at the front of the line
@charred smelt @winged nimbus Here’s my list of general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
Everyone is a main character. Just not a tiktok style main character.
Hello, i am a new dm to dnd, if ye have any tips I would love to know them
You're probably best off heading to the #dm-discussion one for that...
Tip #1: Have fun
Hey me too i just joined what do i need to start playing online
Thank you
Find a group! That's step 1.
i meant like items or books or smth
Otherwise you can watch videos like handbooker helper on YouTube to learn.
also how do i use the looking for dm command
Oh I don't have the slightest idea how to actually play... never found an active group who wanted a newbie and chose me unfortunately.
Go into bot spam and post the command there.
Do what?
Head to #1075498333705089084 and type /looking. Select the one you want. It'll take you to a private form to fill out.
just /lookingfordm ?
ohh
Ohhh my bad
My generic DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
the aplication did not respond
You may need to update your Discord and ensure you have embeds enabled in your settings.
You're also probably better off messaging dms than just making a post. You should also check r/lfg, dnd beyond forums, roll20, and anywhere else.
It's best to write a nice reply that isn't rushed and makes you seem like a fun person to play with
where is embeds in setting cant find it
Messaging "I'm new, can i play?" Isn't great.
No you need dashes between each word.
Like /looking-for-dm
Not /lookingfordm
What would be something good to message? I know its not directed to me but I need the advice'
ik but it says the application did not respond
User Settings>Text & Images. Make sure the toggles are all set to ON.
"Hey! I saw your listing and it looks fun! I really liked that it seemed be in a darker setting. I was wondering if you were still looking for players? I'm brand new though so I'd understand if you're looking for someone with more experience. Hope to hear back soon!"
Idk, that's what I would send to someone.
If Dyno continues to give you an error message, you may try opening a ticket by using the message in #520291181083754516.
One dash, one space. /looking-for dm
And that link is specifically for server feedback. Server support can be found in #moderator-support.
That's... Discord. 😅
Alright! that sounds good, thank you
Also I might just be dumb but where's the channel to get roles?
The roles don't really do anything other than change your name color.
Blue for DMs and green for Players.
Yeah I've read the basic guide and stuff, looking at getting the player's handbook when I have the funds for it. I'm quite excited to start playing. Need to figure out the character stuff as well
(But you could also just pick blue or green because you like blue or green.)
I like green better anyways\
i cant login to roll20 for some reason
Well now the looking for players thing has disappeared...
nevermind, im just tired lol
Okay so im new, where do i ask to join a group?
See #find-a-game for instructions on using the recruitment channels.
Oh bet
Played the last session of my first full campaign last night. I suffered my first character death.
Hope you still had fun!
Hey, you need to post this in #looking-for-players
You can find instructions in #find-a-game
What's this
Take a look at the channel description!
New to D&D or D&D Beyond? Got questions on how to get started? Ask them here! We ask people focus on the basics; more advanced questions can be asked in our other channels
Alright thanks
Still needs to go in #750812887697588356 server rules
ello
hello hello
Go to #1075498333705089084 and type /looking
Oh, uhh, alrighty..
how do one person join a game ?
#looking-for-players and start searching it can take a while to find a game
Hi everyone, I am an veteran player from UK and i am a player of the old version of D&D in the 80's . I recently joined a local group and found i missed it a lot. So i found D&D Beyond to get up to date with the new rules and playing and on this evening i joined the One D&D playtesting UA. I would like to join a campaign testing the new rules and if anyone is thinking about running one that i could join.
Check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
Thank you for the info, but i think this might take a while to get my head around.
hi everyone, nice to meet u all, i am a newby player of this game.
Hi everyone
Im tryna find a party
See #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's recruitment channels.
hol up
how are you supposed to stop the concentration of a creature that uses the 9th level spell Invulnerability from XGtE ?
Helo
Try to incapacitate them. Spells like Banishment, hold person, hypnotic pattern ect. will all break conc without dealing damage
what should I do to start playing dnd?

I am new too, shall we figure it out together?
sorry for the late answer
I don't understand how many spells I can know at level 1 as a cleric
is it like a wizard with his spellbook ?
Clerics have access to the full list of spells for the class up to the level they can cast at. Don't have any level 2 spell slots? Fine, but you could prepare any level 1 spells.
since you don't exactly know the spells
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Clerics know all clerics spells they have access to at their level. So a level 1 cleric knows all 1st-level cleric spells.
Yeah, prepared casters are dope.
Clerics pray to their gods (or their proxies) for their cleric spells.
sure
who else is a prepared caster ?
Druids, paladins, and artificers.
since wizards are a bizarre case
Hooray ! Thank you
so how do we figure it out together?
I joined few other servers to figure it out
but then, what is the purpose of subclass spells ?
since you can cast them anyway ?
@pseudo canyon can I DM you if you don't mind?
Subclass spells are just always prepared spells customized for that particular subclass.
sure
oh so I guess they don't count towards the number of your prepared spells ?
They do not.
I get it
They might also include spells you wouldn’t normally have access to.
Yeah they can include spells you normally don't have
Should I do my very first game as a player before I do my very first game as a DM?
It would be much easier to learn how the game runs as a player than as fresh DM. Learn tips/mistakes from that DM
Okay
Okay final reminder before warnings get issued - please visit #find-a-game to see how our #looking-for channels work. That is the only acceptable location (outside of direct messages) to put together a group or game.
hi
welcome!
How do I type in the “looking for dm” chat
You head to #1075498333705089084, type /looking, select the appropriate option, and fill out the private form.
the base number on the die before any modifiers - the natural part is important because a 1 (usually) means a critical failure and a 20 (usually) means a critical success
So if they rolled a 17 and their modifier is +3, they still rolled a "20", but not a Nat20?
correct
thats called a dirty 20 if we want to get fancy
yes
Oooh, nice XD
Nat 20 is usually used because if you roll a natural 20 on an attack, you automatically hit and deal double the damage dice
and some tables rule its an automatic success on skill checks, but thats not an official rule
So if you rolled a nat 1 you just miss?
Yes, a nat 1 automatically misses
And that's it
What happens if you roll a nat 1 and have negative modifiers lol
Nothing worse than a regular nat 1
Imagine something like "you rolled -1 so your weapon broke"
Some tables play with fumble rules, where getting a nat 1 causes you to drop or weapon, or hit an ally, or break your weapon. But they are optional rules and up to the dm if they want to use them
Critical fumbles are very heated topic.
Haha got my handbook, got some dice, when I get some time I'm finally going to embark on rolling a character
Have fun! Do you have a group?
No not yet. With my work schedule I get every other weekend off so I'm going to go to the local game shop to see if I can find anyone
Is there no way to like post a fresh looking for dm post without having to wait 6 days?
Ah barnacles
Thanks. I’ll keep taking a gander around the forums
Hey guys

Hello
More or less for most of the published adventure material, but you have no responsibility or requirements to play in Forgotten Realms
on dndbeyond, is it capable to give a homebrew magic item multiple attacks/damage types?
Try #ddb-support.

I want to start playing but i dont know how to get started
Have you read the basic rules
How do I level up my character and how to keep track of my character levels?
If I understand correctly, every time I participate in a campaign my character gains experience and everything will be recorded on dndbeyond?
The methods for levelling up, either XP or milestone differ widely from table to table
If your table uses XP, you can indeed record that on D&D beyond
It's fairly standard practice to make a new character for each campaign you play in
To be clear, a "campaign" is a longer-term game, consisting of multiple game sessions. One session of gaming isn't a "campaign."
A campaign can take months or even years to complete
Oh I see! What does it mean when someone says I need to be level 4 to play?
That means you'll be making a lvl 4 character
You'll make the character and then level them up by giving them all the stuff they'd gain over the course of those levels
hello
is it possible to play dnd online by text? i have social anxiety so i don't think i can play using vc and a camera
Yep, it's called 'Play by post'!
Usually done on forums. It's a bit slower than voiced D&D because combat is slower to do just via text and forum posting. But play by post or text only discord server exist.
Look out for 'PbP' or 'text' in game listings
thank you so much!
I see. That's really helpful. Thank you
Now I gotta to find my first game 😄

i finally made a character
Great! We have #character-discussion if you want to share and discuss details (although feel free to ask specific questions here as it relates to playing/rules if you;re new to the game).
Looking for a party to join. I’ve only played two sessions so I’m still new to DnD. Would love to join a session. I also use DnD beyond to create my characters.
Hi there! Please check our #looking-for channels to find a group/game.
?looking
Well at least check out #find-a-game to see how those channels are used.
Would a wood elf druid or a wood elf barbarian be easier to play? I like the idea of playing a magic user but seems a bit difficult as a beginner. What class would be suitable for a beginner?
spells can add a layer of complexity to the game (particularly what spells to chose or prepare!) so you may find it easier to stick with a mostly melee character first.
That said, if you aren't afraid to learn and just enjoy the concept of casting spells, go for it.
Barbarians are simpler to play because they don't have spellcasting to think about. But druids aren't too difficult to learn as spellcasting classes go, so if you're really into them, give it a try.
I have only recently joined D&D Beyond and have made a few characters using the app
@coral forum can we play some dnd with my friend
glad to have you! it can take a little getting used to, but now I don't want to go without the digital toolsets.. so nice to be able to click and load almost everything into a character
Good morning/afternoon/evening y’all! I’ve been playing via roll20 & discord with a group since December but I still feel like I don’t really know all that much. I have a question though, so these communities are like different clubs? Or one big game?
Each table is its own game. We’re all playing D&D but different interpretations and stories within it. They don’t connect in any concrete way.
Even though I have yet to play a game, yes. Each game is separate from another. Critical Role is a big example since it involved a good chunk of homebrew on Matt Mercer's part to create Exandria all while pulling some material from the original sources (such as the gods of the Forgotten Realms like Serenrae, Kord, Bahamut; the Raven Queen, Tiamat, Orcus, and Vecna)
Ok ok, so it’s a bunch of different games set in the same world? But those different games don’t affect other games?
Typically. Think of this server like a server for a video game- we're all playing the same game but in different ways and our saves don't affect each other. We might even be playing different editions or DLCs for a game, so not in the same world at all, but we all like talking about it. If familiar with elder scrolls, think of it like that- some of us might be playing skyrim, oblivion, morrowind, or heavily modded or not...
However some servers (Like westmarches or 'living campaigns') are more like multiplayer games- you actually do all play in the same world and your game affects that world.
That makes a ton of sense now, thank you!
Hi I'm new to dnd and I grew up playing games like skyrim and I'm absolutely in love with dnd so far. I didn't buy a set yet bc I don't know which one to start with first any recommendation?
You don’t need to buy anything to start. The basic rules are free, and if you’re running the game, the old Starter Set adventure is free by signing up with D&D Beyond.
If talking about editions, heavily recommend starting with 5e (the current one) as it is the most accessible and currently supported online via sites like dndbeyond. older editions are worth checking out, but a bit harder to get into.
If talking about which sets (starter's set, essentials kit) or books it depends a little more on your taste. I heavily recommend getting a PHB if anything, but you can play just using the free rules.
Old starter adventure: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1251-claim-your-copy-of-lost-mine-of-phandelver-and#lost-mine
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
But if you want a physical copy for friends the new starter set (Stormwreck isle) is a good buy. the PHB really expands the classes and races you can play as well, from the basic rules.
So I’m trying a monk for the first time and I’m wondering how I’d manually roll flurry of blows? Is just 2 extra attack and damage rolls or are there minus/pluses to the rolls I need to keep in mind?
Do you know how to roll for attacks normally?
Yeah, I’ve got that down, just the flurry throws me off a bit
It’s just two more attacks as your bonus action. So whatever you did for the first (Action) attack, repeat twice more for the Flurry (Bonus Action).
Ah okay, gotcha, thanks!
to a beginner what race and class would you recommend?
Do you have a group already, folks who can teach you the finer points?
To simplify, there are two schools of thought:
-
Pick whatever race/class sounds interesting to you. All of them are learnable, but it's trickier if you're learning on your own.
-
Go with a martial class (fighter, barbarian, rogue, or monk). They all have fewer moving parts to their abilities, making them easier to comprehend on your own. Any race is viable.
I tend to give a slight edge to the second view.
Mechanically, the simplest possible choice is a human champion fighter. 100%.
But not everyone wants to be a human champion fighter, which is why I prefer the first answer.
Having a character you care about is the important part (whether that's a human champion fighter or something else).
How many players is too many?
depends on the table and the DM. I personally draw a line at 6, and I much prefer 4
6 for me
I share the above thoughts. I usually run with 5 so we have 4 if someone can't make it.
7 I'd rather go home or do anything else.
Ok, I have 8 middle schoolers lol that's probably too many
Break them into two groups of four?
I can do that?
Why not?
yeah that is going to be chaotic, I also recommend running two different games for 4 players each
Ok two groups is what I'll do
You'll keep your sanity much longer that way.
Lol these are pretty chill kids, but you're probably right
You'll need a DM for each though. Don't recommend trying to DM two groups of 4 at the same time >.>
What's being suggested is either two time slots say like
Tuesday Group 1
Friday Group 2
or if only one time slot is available, you'll need two DMs
Potentially you can make it so it's 1 kid DMs 3 kids, and you just keep an eye on both groups.
I'd try and get two of the kids to DM, so you can bounce back and forth to help as needed.
If this is a school thing, you could even have them rotate DMs at regular intervals. Make sure everyone gets a shot.
I played in a game where we started with 10 players. It was fun but it is definitely a challenge for focus. Waiting on everyone to do the things they wanted took a lot of time. So that’s something to keep in mind when joining/starting a group
Luckily summer is coming up so we are in no rush, but these are very bright and distractable kids so that's good to know, thank you
Thank you so much this helped me a Lot ^^
does anyone here have the rcommended subscriptions for tts
What do you mean?
tabletop simulator
Ah. Thought you meant text-to-speech. 😅
You could try asking in #third-party-tools-archive.
okay
Why hello there everyone
So I am, very new to DnD, I've wanted to get into it for years but didn't know where to start and was always too shy to really pursue it. However I have finally worked up the courage to do so, and I think joining this server is a good way to start
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
I think? but where are they just so I can double check, is it just the rules chat cause if so I have read that
The rules for the game, not the server rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Coolio! thank you so much!

Both are linked above.
Same! I’m in my first campaign, about 3-4 sessions in
Is One D&D like 5.5e or 6e or more like a "hey, we have this separate set of rules: follow it if you want to!"
So far, from what i read, it changes a lot of rules, like races not giving attributes anymore, some classes changes, etc
WotC marketing is just calling it "5E 2024 revision" or something like that...
If you want to ask more about One D&D (which is just the "codename") head on over to #1026901431132885064
The goal is that it will still work alongside the existing rules and adventures.
To the extent that you could even a 2014 Paladin and a 2024 Paladin in the same game.
Evening folks
Hell-o everyone, I am new here trying to join a game
So I used the character creator online just to get a feel for how the character mechanics work and what options were available. Can I use that character in any session, or do I need to create one based on the session I'm wanting to join?
You create a character for an adventure or a campaign, not per session.
A DM will typically tell players to create a new character if they're joining their table.
For long campaigns you would play the same character. My campaign is currently over a year and will probably last another three years, so the players' characters started off at level 5 and hopefully they'll survive to level 20.
Sorry, that's my bad terminology. Campaign. So I could have a lvl one unused character ready to go or it's typically made on the fly?
Again, that's up to the individual DM. Some campaigns start at level 1 while others start at higher levels.
Don't get attached to the character you create because a DM may ask you create a new one (they may not allow certain playable races/sub-classes, for example)
Got it. Keep it fluid. Thanks!
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose character concepts. Then when you find a DM, you can work together to find the best fit and finalize it.
Ya girl bought her very own Player's Handbook today!! Time to start studying.
And The Young Adventurer's Collection. I realize it's written for kids, but I thought it looked cute and wanted to check it out. Doesn't hurt to collect especially when it's something I can enjoy and then hand down to our future kiddos!!
The party we've formed are only acquainted right now, are there any things we can do to help everyone introduce themselves? Does that even make sense...like, instead of everyone just talking, some kind of little game? It's kids.
does anyone know what (Dex.save) means?
Dexterity saving throw.
The DM will ask you to make a Dexterity saving throw for certain effects, such as magic spells like fireball to avoid/reduce damage taken.
hello
Like an icebreaker?
because im looking at my dragonborns damage type and its breath weapon and if i were to choose a black dragon with a acid damage type its breath weapon is a 5 by 30ft. line (Dex. save)

The creature targeted would make a Dexterity saving throw. Like OMYAC said, it's an attempt to avoid (or at least lessen) the damage taken.
i was wondering if anyone how i could get started in playing a game/campaign/one-shot
Do you know the rules?
Check out #looking-for-players
not officially no im pretty green at the game since this is gonna be my first time playing
thanks
You can post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356 and can try replying to the #looking-for-players postings.
Thanks
Yes
That's my suggestion. Icebreaker activities (you can find a ton on Google). Not sure if that works as well as an actual "Please describe your character," but you could try it to see how the players react.
Ok thanks!
So what happens if a character can't see in the dark during combat?
They have disadvantage
They’re subject to the Blinded condition.
^ that
And how would you account for a disadvantage? Minus a certain amount during attacks?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Blinded
A blinded creature can't see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage.
