Here's a few excellent resources to get you started!
• Try this guided interactive adventure to create your first character and learn the basics of D&D.
• The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
• For a bite-sized breakdown on specific rules, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series on YouTube.
• You can create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
• Get advice on making your first character, then check out the rest of the New Player's Guide articles.
• Start here to learn how to be a Dungeon Master.
• Get advice on starting strong for your first game, then browse the rest of the Dungeon Master Tips series for more.
• Check out #find-a-game or this article for instructions on finding a group.
• Get advice for playing online with this article or video.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Yeah of course already read the free basic rules.
You can read the SRD for the classes/races or consider getting the player's handbook (PHB)
Get a character sheet, dice, DM and you can start playing
If you're a player or a DM, the Player's Handbook is essential. Beyond that, the DMG is handy if you're the DM, and some of the rules expansions—Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron—are worthwhile for how they round out the game.
Also question is it better to buy the actual copies or digital copies from dnd beyond
That's your preference but buying physical won't stop you from using it if your internet is down https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/1078383167075008522.webp?size=48&quality=lossless
That's up to you. D&D Beyond is convenient (especially for online play), you can buy individual races/classes/spells, and they have seasonal sales.
That said, you are at their whim if they no longer sell books that are now considered "legacy", such as Volo's and Mordenkainen's. (If you already bought those "legacy" books you still have access to them though!)
You can share digital books more easily, but there's the issue of being online to access stuff. But you can search them more easily too, so it's really a matter of preference, as said above.
So for online access I’ll be able to share it with my friends if they don’t have it correct
If you pay for a certain subscription tier.
You will need the Master Tier subscription (it's about $5/month)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/store/subscribe
Hello im trying to start Lost Mine of Phandelver on Roll 20 but i have no clue how to build it or start it
That's a question for #third-party-tools-archive
Hey guys. I'd like to make a zone of control/supportive earth mage as my first class. What race/class should i go for?
Wizard.
Also #character-discussion would be the best spot to ask about character concepts.
ahh thanks both!
My older cousin introduced me and my sister to dnd and he’s really good at dming but he doesn’t have that much time anymore so we decided I should try dming so we’ve had a couple sessions and they went well but I always feel like I don’t stick the landing the way my cousin did so does anyone have some tips for a dm who’s just starting out
be imaginative
- Remember that it’s a game and people show up to have fun. If they say they’re having a good time, take them at their word.
- You’re a player too, so don’t ignore your own enjoyment either.
- Absorb advice, but do what works well for you and your table. Don’t let others dictate what you enjoy.
- Steal from other sources; no one is 100% original.
- Do enough prep so you feel comfortable. Over time, you will hopefully find the sweet spot between too much and too little.
- You don’t have to be a voice actor. Do what works for you.
- Talk to your players about the game so that you’re all clear of what each person likes and wants out of the game.
Do you have a specific example of something your cousin did well that you’d like to improve on?
Also make use of pre-written adventures and tweak them to suit. Saves time and work and also helps you to see how the D&D team create/configure adventures.
I don’t exactly know how to explain it but it felt like everything was extremely organically implemented into the setting
If you are new to DMing, do not compare yourself with people in general, let alone someone who has been at it for a while.
You mean the story elements?
That and also some unimportant npcs or little occurrences that dont have a large impact on anything
I know not to do that but I still feel like I could be doing a bit better than I already am
Are your players smiling/had fun at the end of a session? If so good job
They usually tell me they enjoyed it but when actually playing there are many moments where I struggle with playing certain npcs or starting off encounters
As someone who does this, you are harder on yourself than the players are on you. If they had fun, you succeeded. Still, if you want to improve, ask for feedback from them. Look for advice online (it is plentiful). Run other games, steal from TTRPG systems and general media. Reflect: what do you do poorly in your own estimation? Why? Knowing the problem can lead to the solution.
Thank you I’ll try my best to properly figure the problem out
You’ll get there and find your own style one day it will just klick but as long as your having fun and so are your players that’s the only thing that matters
Is there a good place to find daily one-shot type of games? My usual game was cancelled for the day and looking for something to do in place of it
Check out #looking-for-community - there are many servers there that play D&D and often have one-shots or west march style games running.
Cool, ty!
hi there
Welcome!
I've never played D&D and I'm interested where do I start?

Hey, i am a dm in formation so i wondered is any of you got aalny tips or help
im trying to lfg
Hello i am new to dnd do you know where i can join a campaign
?looking - these are the channels to find a group/game. See #find-a-game for more info.
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted. You can use the thread attached to the post or send the user a direct message.
To post your own instead, simply type /looking-for, select the channel you want, and send.
Go to the pinned message the top-right corner of the looking-for-X channel, that'll have instructions on how to post.
Thanks
If you look at the picture, you type in /looking-for in any channel, pick the channel you are trying to post in. Then send
But it wont let me type in that channel
No - like type /looking-for then at the prompt dm to create a post in the looking-for-dm channel
You can only post in #1075498333705089084
Otherwise find a posting in #looking-for-players and respond in the thread attached to the post.
How do i put the information on there
type /looking-for then at the prompt dm to create a post in the looking-for-dm channel
If you’re still having issues please read #find-a-game
That’s for sharing any specific preferences not covered by the other fields.
Ok thx
Here’s one of my copypastas: #dm-discussion message
Has anyone ever played with a DM that manages your hitpoints for you?
no haha, they expect us to do it
they have too much on their hand in most cases anyway
I’m playing with a DM right now that doesn’t tell us hit points, he manages them for us. I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with that so I could ask for tips
Whats the logic of that? like do you know what damage you have taken? or is it all a secret?
No, he says it’s more roleplay based, so he’ll describe the damage, and we sort of have to guess.
I am not a fan of that, I have never heard of that TBF
But then there are wackier homerules, I just would not be a fan
That’s not something I’ve ever run across. Keeping monster HP secret? Yeah that’s standard. Not allowing players to manage and know their character’s HP? Kind of weird IMO.
I don’t particularly like it either, but I’m trying to make the best of it. It’s my first time playing. Even if you don’t have experience with it, I’d appreciate some tips or ideas on how to ask questions or what to say to get a better understanding of combat when I don’t know how much hp I have left.
I get the idea, trying to hide the "game" as much as possible for more immersion. I'm personally not a fan but I can see the appeal
Where does it end though? spellslots, movement speed?
No just hp.
You basically have to ask how fatigued or injured your character feels.
and hope your DM is giving you a useful description
I guess asking that at the beginning of my turn or every time I’m hit is the most effective thing.

hello I'm new to the game and looking for my first campaign
Have you checked out the pinned message yet? Lots of good resources to help get you started.

^ And those are the channels to find a group/game to join.
I got a question
Do you need anything to start playing dnd cause I'm think bout trying it out
At a minimum you need a group to play with, some understanding of the rules (at least how your character works - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules for the free basic rules), a character sheet to keep track of your character, and dice (digital or physical).
Alright, thanks bro you're a G
Your group will decide specifically what other tools they'll use to play - such as Virtual Tabletops (VTTs), online chat tools/services, dice bots, etc.
Sir Knight maybe we could form a group
Ah, thanks
Sure that sounds good
Feel free to take your group finding to the appropriate channel (or direct messages). Thanks!
We'd need a dm and a few more players tho wouldn't we?@whole tendon
I was just about to say that lol
See #looking-for-players for DMs looking for players to join their games
Thanks
@whole tendon im gonna take a look at thus link first tho brb
@whole tendon im back
alright
Could you take your conversation to direct message? Thanks!
Ight sorry!
(leaves the channel open for other folks to ask questions)
Sure sorry
No worries! Hope you folks find a great group and have lots of fun!
Thanks
Expect and adapt to your players causing shananigans, and don't be upset if they go way off the rails, if it looks like they are all having fun, join in on that fun and burn the world to the ground with them

Bought the dnd starter set but my kids don't want to play with me...I just wanna play!!!!!!!!
Even if you use skittles for monsters on the map? lol
I've tried skittles but it is not working
try pennies, money usually incentivises kids
at least it did when i was a kid 💀
i was a money fiend
If you can demonstrate how you're having fun with D&D they might engage in it "to have fun with <parent>".
They just asked what is a penny
D:
What's the rough age range you're working with?
(please don't provide specific ages - just a general ballpark will do)
oh
For safety reasons I'll remove that
Ok my bad
man they just dissed the penny fandom
i love pennies, i just feel hurt
Okay - what kind of media do they like?
Can you create an adventure that echos something they are really in to?
The older kid is down to play but the younger would rather ply mine craft maybe there is a mine craft themed adventure out there
Funny you should mention that...
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/minecraft-creatures-monstrous-compendium
They just did a cross-marketing thing with MInecraft
Lol no way
yeah
perfect idea-
oh i was gonna say maybe say the enderdragon is the final boss or something
wait its offical?!?
Yep - official cross-marketed promotion for Minecraft and D&D
niiiice
Nice thx!!!
So I think you have some good hooks now to get them to try it
time to create minecraft steve from hit game minecraft
(but don't force it - focus on fun and they'll likely find it fun too)
i personally really suggest the enderdragon as the BBEG, use the game theory version of it though. the one where it's like... controlling a whole dimension of beings that can basically teleport
but on a different note
clears throat
Man! What's the deal with dungeon food?
bah dum shhh
how do i find a dm
There’s a channel (if you have the right roles) that has a bunch of listings from people looking for players, you would just need to scout out a few that you like and apply. You could also put up a message in the looking for dm chat (again you would need the right roles) and wait for people to come to you!
So, permissions to post. How long do you have to wait for that? I just wanted to post to find a group.
Head to #find-a-game, there are instructions there.
It Wont Let Me Type In #find-a-game
No, that is the channel with instructions to read. They will tell you what to type and where.
Hey I am fairly new and joined someone running a homebrew 5e campaign they had been working on for a while and was playing with one other player, 2 others drifing in and out and we played for a good 30 hrs over a couple days long sessions was fun it was my first dnd I loved it, however I was a little burned out and we said we could take a couple days to have a break. I was posting on differnet places trying to find a first - third edition dungeon crawler type of table and he messaged me saying "i cannot have a second campign taking away from mine so with no hard feeling im going to part ways" and blocked me. Is this normal in the space can you usually only play at one table one campaign with one dm until it is finished? To be clear i was just trying to play with a different group on days we would not normally play.
I play in…four or five groups and run one, so no, that isn’t common, I’d say.
oh good hmm who knows why people do or act like anything, thank you
that is pretty bizarre actually.
i know i was very confused because i was polite and nice and we all had a good time together
Rainbow DM are u here?
probably for the best in the long run tbh
prob ill find something else
There are lots of games out there!
That's not the norm. Probably for the best you parted ways if that DM acted like that.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
id love to make some friends on here and maybe get to play some dnd !! i havent ever had a campaign but im currently watching jocat's heart of elynthi campaign on youtube!!
Nice! Currently watching through their previous campaign before getting to that one, which I actually only just the other day learned about xD
Don't hate me I'm tryna get into dnd. I started ttrpgs by playing pf2e last year. I'm in a server with people who mostly play dnd, and I want to play with them but I find it hard to understand dnd combat and its move action bonus action shout and something else system and think pf2e combat is just superior idk also foundry implementation is just so seamless. How do I even overcome this
i think maybe just having a DM who can clearly explain things to you? idk im only familiar with d7d
d&d*
JoCat helped me get into DnD but now I'm following alot of Zedrin for his Pathfinder stuff
Okay I'll likely just join a game and go from there. They all play AL which to me is even more daunting lol dnd to me is already daunting as it is
I think I soft got into it from kinda watching with my ex-partner some storytime animator's animations of her DnD campaigns. Can't remember the name of it for the life of me but I think maybe it was called Fool's Gold? Had an edgy monkey in there.
Trying to find a local group but the only one that seems available is from someone who I haven't even talked to but from reading what they share and say in local discords
Yeah, they kinda mentally fell off, probably for sure would not make a good DM to play with (favoritism/having it out for certain players that don't fall in line with them)
does someone speak french so he/she can help me ?
i have a question how do i put a subclass on my characters (on DQD beyond)?
Have you got to the level where you can take a subclass
what lvl do thay need to be to take a subclass cuz all of myn are lvl 1
Only a few classes get subclass at level 1 what class are you ?
a wizard and I'm working on a cleric
https://discord.com/channels/@me/906096506891812875/1092374887559086080. Go to edit character levels and on class page look for something like this
Are you on the app?
i'm on my computer
Is this for wizard or cleric?
both
Wizard gets subclass at level 2
https://discord.com/channels/@me/906096506891812875/1092376714233000036 cleric level 1, so go to your character and edit/ manager character levels and select divine domain
No worries

Is there a place I can play dnd by myself online or sumn?
?looking Here's channels you can use to find a group or game. Please see #find-a-game for more information on how to use these channels. Also maybe try your local game/comic stores and public libraries - they may have groups playing D&D already. Most groups are fine taking on new-to-D&D players as long as they show a willingness to read/learn the rules and fit in well with the social dynamics of the group.

hi so i have only played a few games and they fell apart but and a few friends want to play but none of us have really played so i was thinking about stepping up and being the dm but i have no idea what to do and how to dm so is there any crash course on youtube someone would recommend?
Not exactly a newcomer, but I’m a novice at roleplay. Anyone have tips on how to get into and stay in character?

Thank you so much I’ll check this out frist
i just tried to play dnd with my brother (it was my first time dming). He said i stab myself in the head with my longsword it dealt 8 damage out of 9 of his hp (the d8 roll was a 2)
XD
Hi, is it typically tough for solo newbies to find a game? I an in a few discords and I've hit the links, but always seem to be late to the party
I think it's tough to find a game for many reasons: scheduling, style of play, etc. So many games are happening, though, that you just have to remain patient and persistent.
Here's a place to start: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz2TUw__7qw7qNmQMgFckACCt4RPl8QCx
You can Look through the Posts in #looking-for-players and Message the DMs of entrys that seem interesting.

Thanks, I guess I just have to keep at it. Mon/Tue games don't seem too popular. That's probably why I'm having so much trouble
I would imagine a lot of games happen around the weekend, but some sites like Start Playing give you the option to filter results by day.
I am completely new to DND how do i find a group to play online ?

to play dnd online do i have to have the dnd game from steam or is discord sufficient?
Discord, or slack, or skype, or teams or any other form of chat client
I’ve never used anything other than discord before
There's no download required

oh, thank you
Hey, anyone will teach me how to play? ☺️
Have you read the basic rules
not yet
yoooo me n my friends want to start a campaign and we dont know what we need/buy to get started (none of us know how to really properly play lol)
Check the pins for a free copy of the basic rules
Thank you!
@summer spear well, a good start would be to get the D&D Starter Set, which has one set of dice and pre-made character sheets and campaign
Personally, I would get into playing basically immediately, but noone in my life wants to play with me lol, so I'Ve joined this server in hopes of maybe finding some online game I can take part in
I love love love worldbuilding, characterbuilding, storytelling and roleplaying and really my only problem is that nobody shares my desire to play a game of dnd
And I do have friends I roleplay with, but it's freestyle and improv. We make almost no plans and just play one or several characters each. And while that already is insanely fun, I feel like it does make us prone to making our characters pretty OP and it can lead to the rp turning into a competition of who can out-godpower the other one and I just feel like that's really annoying so things like skills and dice rollls are an element that, being added, would just make me have MORE fun
ooh thank u!!!
np
how well should i have the rules figured out before trying to get into a game? i'm eager to play but obviously it'd be a shame to take away from the game because i dont know necessary things
I wouldn’t say you don’t need them memorized, but knowing how to find the rules you need is a good skill to start learning.
You should know as much as you can, however, you don't need to memorize every single rule. The books are there to be referenced.
The DM and other players hopefully will help you out but help them help you by learning the rules as much as you can.
thanks
Having the DM constantly pause the game to explain you basics like what ability scores are, what's a class is, what's a saving throw, etc. hinders everyone.
if someone has a req for dnd beyond dos that mean i have to buy the book too
No.
oh yeah of course, i have those figured out at least at a basic level, just been looking at the classes and races to see what the options are
D&D Beyond comes with the free Basic Rules (and SRD). If it's an online game, the DM may share their digital books (ask them).
I think also anyone in a campaign with the master tier means anyone with owned content gets to share.
Don’t quote me on that, tho.
and is there a similar class to the elder mythos cultist from PF 1e
Aberrant Mind Sorcerer or Great Old One Warlock?
isn't aberrant mind sorc
Got ‘em mixed up.
and even then they dont worship the outer ones and have that whole theme
Worship tends to be in the realm of role play instead of mechanics in 5e. Those’ll give you the mechanical aspects, and you’ll use flavor for the rest.
Any class can be a priest or worship gods
and did they finally add archliches?
Can’t say I’ve seen any.
hey how do I put out a thing in Looking For DM or Looking For Players?
If you are in a school you can make a dnd club

Where can I go to find an online beginners game? I am older and slower than I was when I last played in 1985. I checked in my area and there are no local groups so it looks like online is it.
?looking - here are channels to find a group or game to join. Please read #find-a-game for more info.
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.

Which channel should I use to ask for DMing questions?
Is there a channel for character help not averae related. I have been working on a character for a long time and would love to get peoples opinions on it and how I can improve it like backgrounds and stuff.
That'd be #character-discussion.
so for example warlock book of ancient secrets reads " costs 50 gp for the rare inks needed to inscribe it." do i need to buy 50 gold worth of inks first or can i just subtract 50 gold?
Officially, you’d need the inks, but the best person to ask that question is your DM.
figured as much
RAW is you have to have the inks, so if you're in BFE and there's no store selling the high quality inks you need, then you're SOL and can't inscribe.
What are some interesting ways I can start off a campaign?
My friend started off our Pirate campaign by us getting robbed by pirates and being forced to join them
All you need is a quest - something happens, thing needs to be found/retrieved, party runs into complications when trying to do thing and then tie it into your overarching concept behind the campaign.
Why did you start playing dnd?
I was introduced to Roleplaying games pretty young and started to like the idea of it and discovered dnd
My friends and I found it fun.
Do you remember the first game of dnd you played?
hey guys i'm sorry if you get this a lot, but I'm someone whos never touched dnd b4. But i'm vvvvv interested in learning more about it and playing? Can anyone help me start or explain how this works? ❤️

Please use the #looking-for channels to organize games. See #find-a-game
I would love to but I do not have a lot of time on my hands.
“before”
I'm interested, at least, can you give me some more info on it? Feel free to priv message me :3
Thank you.
No but I remember where I was, it was 1986 and I was on board the USS Dwight D Eisenhower CVN69 and it was AD&D 1st edition or so I thought
are the beasts aquired by battle smith or beast master able to be charmed/made to attack its owner/allies?
Steel Defender is immune to being charmed, per the stat block.
Beast Master would probably depend on your chosen beast.
The Primal Companions from TCOE definitely aren’t immune, though.
Charmed on its own is less potent than it seems you may have assumed, though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Charmed
whats the uhh temp thing next to the hit points? and what number do i put it at on the character sheet thingy
that’s temporary hit points, you only put them in if a spell or such gives you them
they are basically consumed first if you get hurt
eg you have 10 hit points and 5 temp points and you take 6 damage. your temp hit points get removed first and you are left with 9 hp afterwards
ohh okok

It's 2 AM for me 😴, so I'll try and keep this short. My entire life I've been attracted to video games, books, films, shows, and stories centered around themes that are all variants around dungeons and dragons - i.e., castles, magic, mythical creatures, etc. I never gave DnD a thought because I have grown up while video games are readily available and they seemed so much easier to immerse myself in. However, my biggest thing with video games, say elden ring or diablo, is I always want more out of the character creation and gear possibilities - I want it to be limitless, as it is in, say, ready player one. Needless to say, that won't be happening for a while, but I am thinking I should maybe try and exercise my imagination and try DnD! I'm in college and in the corresponding honors college and it just so happens that I just missed 2 straight semesters where there was a DnD elective available that is apparently super informative and fun for honors students only and they don't offer it next semester! Hopefully it comes back in the future so I can take it!
As for character creation - this is what I'm most excited about! It's really late and this is on a whim, so I won't read all the rules on char creation till tomorrow, but I've got the general idea of what I want. I am thinking a sleek white draconian (say similar to Lansseax in elden ring) with long whisker-
like spikes (like the things in avatar) and sleek metal armor. I want the features on this draconian to be of maybe yellow or red color and for my weapons to be some cool bladed tonfas where the blades glow the color of my features (whatever I choose) and the blade is almost a semicircle. I'm think the character can mostly be focused on quick 1 on 1 combat and weak against groups, since it is an assassin-like build. I would also think its cool for the tonfas to induce poison or something, as that would be very fitting to the salamander-dragon-like assassin build. Please let me know if I am making any mistakes! I know it is important to make my character fit well with whatever group I work with. Would it be appropriate to get some artwork done of my character so that I have something physical of it?
I would say my fear with the game is that I may not feel fully into it because there isn't anything I can see or hear, but I feel like that's also where I can grow! If you all have any advice or guidelines for me please do weigh in! I can't wait to get started.
uh hi, can anyone help me on my rogue character?
You want #character-discussion
oh okay
Hey I’m new to Dnd and love watching games but find it difficult to learn the rules, lore, how to make a character, and etc. does anyone know any YouTube channels i can watch to learn pretty much anything it would be very appreciated :]
Handbooker helper is often recommended in there as a good video playlist
im new aswell but i found this one channel called Jocat that helped me understand more about creating ur character
Jocat isn’t really for new players https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L this is my go to playlist for new players

I don't quite yet have a PHB but does anyone know of any "gambling" based game segments in Dnd?
It literally is a life or death segment and the way the characters are battling is bassically through a card game or it can be gambling, I am adding some minor realistic real world acompanyment but I am still picking what real life games to add to the first battle type thing
There aren't any official rules for gambling games in D&D but your DM could throw something together easy enough just using skill checks.
If you are a DM then maybe check in #dm-discussion and see what other DMs have done.
Oh yeah okay, I thought I was in the wrong channels hah, tysm!
There is Gambling as a downtime activity in XGE.
There are also a few games interspersed throughout the books. BG:DiA has a games called Baldurs Bones. There is also a game called 3 Dragon Ante in Keys from the Golden Vault, and a mechanic for slot machines.
Ooo Olay okay cool. Tysm!!!
Hey so if a Druid with wild shape saw a animal in a book could they shape into it or do they have to see it living
That's a question for your DM
Hello everyone
I am newcomer
Me and my mates need a DM
If you are DM don't hesitate to hit me up 😉
Welcome
Check #looking-for-players or try making a post in #750812887697588356
You can find guidance in #find-a-game
Hello, I am having trouble posting in #750812887697588356
It seems I am unable to type in that very channel
This post (#find-a-game message)
describes the command and where to run it to get the bit to create a post for you.
Note: you can't edit the post once it is created, and there is a 7 day timer until you can post again
Nevermind
if you take a spell given by your patron, is it pact magic ?
Subclass spells are still part of the pact magic feature, yeah
do you need to prepare pact magic spells ?
i don't understand clearly
so it counts as a normal spell (expends a spell slot) but you don't have to prepare it ?
Yes, you just know them
Some spellcasters simply know their spells. They choose which spell to learn, and they have that spell basically forever.
Those casters usually have a wider variety of spells to choose from as a result.
Others are prepared casters. They have a smaller list of spells to choose from, but they can change their choices after every long rest.
(Wizard, notably, is kind of a mix between the two.)
i’m starting my first campaign as a player on friday, is there anything i should know?
besides how to play the game ofc
yes, be nice, don't be late, listen to your dm, bring snacks, etc
go with the flow, read the room
don't worry if you get things wrong as well
DM any concerns to your DM
alright
Read over your abilities to get a sense of how they work, even if the specifics elude you.
Hi everybody! I'm super new to DnD role play and does anybody know where I should start?

Is there a chart /resource online that shows the minimum/maximum grid distance for melee combat (long sword)?
Longsword isn't a ranged weapon, it's a melee weapon
Sorry meant melee
It doesn't have reach either, so it it can only hit creatures within your normal reach (which is typically 5 feet)
Number of grid squares depends on what scale you're using for your grid
Thank you for the assistance, grid used is 5ft per

Not a newcomer myself, but looking to get a relative of mine into TTRPGs/D&D their only experience with anything like this is the Dragon Strike board game from the early 90s, and I'm pretty sure they never played it - just admired the artwork lol. This person is is fairly geeky (into tech and sci-fi) but doesn't really keep up with things on the internet since they are a little older and have a wife and kids etc. I explained TTRPGs as collaborative storytelling with rules and talked about different settings and rulesets (like 5E etc) but what i really want is to show them a short video (like under 10 mins) that introduces the game, and shows typical gameplay just so they could get an idea of how it all works. I don't need a rules explanation video, just an overview of the game, what you can do in it and an example of play. Does anyone have a go-to video to share with newcomers like that?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
If you send them to http://playdnd.com, there’s an interactive video right at the top.
It shows a few people playing D&D, and the viewer gets to choose-your-own-adventure it at a couple points.
On that same page, there’s also a link for Before the Storm. Similar concept, but it’s text instead of video.
That one actually covers some rules basics too, though.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Yeah or that.
Well I will read them fro sure but I would like to find in the mean time someone to play with as well
If you can I would like to
You should learn the rules before you play.
Crawl before you sprint.
I will dont worry
Hello, I played as a character in a white wolf game back in 2012. I played on Pathfinder game and killed the whole party. But, for some reason, I have been picked to DM a new game for D&D. So I am here looking for tips of the trade. It will be so nice to meet everyone and learn how to be a DM.
Check out #dm-discussion
@cobalt frigate thanks I will!
does 5e not let you levelup skills like 3e?
I'm only familiar with 3e from Neverwinter Nights by Bioware
Your stats? Those increase at certain class levels when you get an Ability Score Increase (ASI). Assuming you don't take a feat.
Each class has a table that will show when you get those increases.
Monk, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk#TheMonkTable
5e does not have skill points like 3.5 used to have, you are either proficient in a skill (so you add your proficiency modifier, based strictly on your level), or you aren't proficient
I’m a beginner planning on running a rogue in a 5e campaign, are there any archetypes I should avoid?
Make a character who wants to work with the party.
Don't wander off from the party.
Don't steal from other PCs.
Good to know, are there any subclasses that might be hard for a beginner to use well?
I’ve been looking at them but it’s hard to envision how they’d work in execution
I might recommend against Arcane Trickster as spellcasting is one more complication to learn. It's possible, for sure, but if you're looking for one less thing to juggle, I'd recommend a different subclass.
Would soulknife be fine? It’s the one I’ve been the most interested in
Go for it! 👍🏻
I think so? I've never seen soulknife played but it's on my to-try list. You don't have much in terms of resources to manage.
Thank you, it’s been hard to get info on since beyond hides it for some reasons
Oh yeah I just use the books irl
The Basic Rules are available at no cost and come with one subclass for each class. For rogues, that's the Thief.
Soulknife can be found in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
It's a paywall. The game isn't free beyond the free Basic Rules.
You can either buy the entire digital book or just the individual playable races/classes (for about $2 each).
(The sale on that book ends today, fwiw. Currently 40% off.)
Another option is joining a campaign that the DM shares their digital books with their players.
If you do buy just the subclass, whatever you spend will get credited toward the cost of the book itself, though.
You can take a look on reddit for shared campaigns, people sometimes do that just out of the goodness of their hearts
Very useful info, thank you all
I want to buy one (more than one lol) of the adventures from dndbeyond before they go on sale. I know that curse of strahd is highly recommended and it looks very interesting to me but I don't think my players would enjoy it. What are some of the really good adventures for players with a bit less of an attention span
Are you a new DM?
Aye
Do you know what your players like?
So I play BITD with them on a streamlined platform so I have a feel for them currently
How does expertise work? is it a permanent thing since creating your character? https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/rogue#Expertise-342
It is, you select the skills when you receive the feature
Yes, Expertise is a permanent trait.
And what do they like specifically?
Does the rogue premade in Lost Mine of Phandelver even have expertise?
They like bonding with npcs and they really like their past being brought up, most of the puzzles have been hit or miss but I hope that's just due to them being new players. Combat has been pretty well received but once again it's streamlined, only one of my players has actually played 5e type combat with dice rolling for damage and all that
Yes, in Stealth.
Honestly I wanted to gauge how they did on LMOP before I got anything but I wanted to snag a few before the sale ended
It has Stealth as razorwing mentioned and also Thieves Tools.
So I'd recommend reading reviews and/or watching even a chunk of any play-throughs for modules. Curse of Strahd is difficult for new DMs to run, whereas any of the Starter Kit adventures—Lost Mine, Icespire Peak, or Stormwreck Isle—are made for new players and DMs.
So I guess another question is how do you transfer your characters to new adventures? Like should I have them all go back to level 1 or is there a good way to scale the adventure for higher levels
Stomwreck Isle is maybe among the shortest official adventures since it's only levels 1-3, so that might give them and you enough sense of whether they wanna continue or not.
Ooh 1-3 sounds nice actually
You can find guides on sites like Reddit or DMsGuild/DriveThruRPG for scaling adventures up.
Is there a general one which is more popular? I can imagine most players want to bring over their geared up character and only start at level 1 if they're making a new one
LMoP is free through D&D Beyond and regarded as solidly written, so that tends to be quite popular. It's a bit longer as it's levels 1-5.
Yeah I already got that one loaded up in Foundry and have read through it a bit to get an idea and it looks good especially with combat being so early
My last question before I take a shower is, do all of these adventures take place in the same setting? Ideally I want to be able to learn about the game world and keep applying it to that same game world so I can make the role playing better.
just don't kill your players in that first goblin encounter, stuff is scary
Yeah I see that it says to just knock them out
Well if they lose
The plan isn't to get them knocked out but if it happens
Shouldn't ever kill your players, you won't have anyone to play with afterwards, especially in jail. :P
Not all the official adventures take place in the Forgotten Realms, but many do. The hiccup is that many of them start at level 1, so you may not get to import characters often.
It's just that surprise + hiding goblins = a lot of hurt
so true!
Please don't discuss adventure specifics outside of #1029833015423143957
I'll probably grab just one of these for now and see how the players do as a result, I'll miss out on the sale but probably better to make sure I know what I'm buying instead of buying something I don't use at a discount
Yeah, don't let the FOMO get to you. Plus, sales do happen at other times of the year.
lmop is pretty good for mixing it a bit of everything. I ran storm king's thunder as my first book campaign after that and had quite a bit of fun

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

What's also really fun is combining lost mines and icespire peak
I've done it with both adventures as the main quest, and the lifting side quests from the other one
How does stealth work? is it rolled everytime you move? do you not roll it when you're not moving?
You roll it when the DM tells you too. Depends what your doing and if it needs a stealth check
For example your trying to sneak up on an enemy camp you would roll a stealth check, or if your trying to hid to ambush someone
You may have to make a few stealth checks for travel depending if circumstances change
in dnd5e is proficiency (e.g., proficiency in armor or weapon categories) tiered like in pf2e? trained, master, expert, etc?
Kind of. You can take feats to be master in armour types to gain additional benefits
ah feats! i see! thank you!
and sorry, how often do you acquire feats? from my understanding its not as frequent as in pf2e
Whenever you get an ASI (variant humans get a bonus feat at level 1)..
whats an ASI? sorry
Ability Score Improvement
okay gotcha! thanks!
for LOPM, why don't the starter characters come with a bedroll?
Was wondering what people here thought
Playing a redemption paladin, party member is a criminal/thief
Right at the start of the campaign, just before we get the main quest, he steals my gold through private DM rolls. I knew he did something but only knew he took my gold later on
After the first session I say that I didn't like my stuff being stolen right at the start of the campaign
He, (the new) DM and a few other party members defend it, saying it's what his character would do, I'm a hypocrite (I threatened to use Rebuke Violent on anyone that hurt the unarmed enemy), etc
I cant exactly resolve it in rp because my character didn't notice, and they keep saying my PC is a pacifist anyway (he isn't lol)
So what do I do? Is it an overreaction?
Oh, another defence was that we got more gold from the questgiver anyway
Not an overreaction. My suggestion is walk away and find another group.
'It's what my character would do' can be a reasonable response, but not when what your character would do involves making the game directly and intentionally worse for other players
The player decides what character to create. It's all on them. Therefore they choose what their character would do and the responsibility lies with them.
Whenever someone uses the excuse, "It's what my character would do" it's a big red flag.
absolutely, it can be justified for good rp sure but whenever its the excuse for pointlessly inconveniencing a fellow pc?
D&D is a group collaboration game and the party cohesion broke down as soon that rogue PC decided to steal from a fellow party member.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
Walk away from that table. It's good to find out now then later that they're not a good fit for you.
The proper response is "Then don't create a character that makes the game less fun for others". Then if they refuse, you just leave.
I get that it sucks, and I get wanting to work things out, but players who behave like that and then double down on top of it aren't going to change. There's a reason that two of my table rules include no killing/stealing from party members.
The old fellow is correct. D&D is a collaborative game. It's not a game that you 'win' by being better than other party members. I wouldn't want to play with someone who doesn't understand that
yeah, would just be better for the DM to understand that and then enforce it
But he's quite new and gets influenced fairly easily by the thief player
It's also that my character is apparently unable to react to this by force? Because he has Oath of Redemption
Some players think that because you can "do anything" in D&D means you can do anything in D&D. There's a social contract between the DM and players — this is why session 0 is very important to lay down the ground rules (I have mine in the D&D Beyond campaign page, which includes no PvP and muderhoboing)
I didn't assume there'd be hidden secret rolls until it happened. We had a session 0 but didnt discuss it. I guess this guy just plays like this a lot? As the DM has played together with him a few times and maybe assumes it's normal
Hidden rolls can be a thing sometimes, but generally they're things like 'the DM rolling stealth in secret for the monster sneaking up on the PCs'
I tried making the argument that someone who stole as often as this guy did would've had the habit beaten out of him a long time ago, or even killed for it.
But apparently that doesn't matter because he's hard to kill, lol
I mean you're right. Someone who steals from everyone they meet wouldn't have survived to reach adulthood. Sooner or later, you're gonna roll garbage.
The rogue in my Wednesday game learned that lesson. She thought her +10 SoH would protect her from being caught. Then while drunk with disadvantage she tried to pickpocket the innkeeper, rolled a nat 1 on the disadvantage die and didn't beat his perception. One thing led to another and the party spent the night in jail (and was released the next morning because the innkeeper knew that there was no harm done, though that rogue wasn't invited back into his inn for awhile).
Yeah, it's annoying that he didn't roll badly
apparently he did a roll to check where my money was stored and a roll to steal it whilst he was next to me
I wasn't asked where I kept my money, nor have I ever described it
He also used my passive perception so I never rolled to catch him
passive perception is correct in that case
unless your character was actively watching for thieves, passive perception is what you'd use
that's fair
I dont think the DM randomly deciding where i kept my gold out was, though
Probably not, no, that's something you should have been asked
Well, tried to message the DM about it but got ignored, so I guess there's nothing I can do to change that
ah, so this is the channel for newcomers like me, eh?
it is indeed. You can get help, advice, etc. here 🙂 more experienced players hang out here as well, if you have any questions, let us know!
In terms of being a redemption paladin, would there be anything I can do about it?
in character? Probably not. Your character has no knowledge of who stole their money, yes? Though of course they can have suspicions...but perhaps your character would hesitate to suspect new comrades. Perhaps they misplaced it? Or a monster or thief snuck into camp? Was it stolen last night? Who was on watch? You could try talking to them...
But honestly? If you want my real opinion? Don't bother. Players who act that way will drag you down to their level if they can. They'll just do more of the same. Any time you get treasure, they'll steal it from you.
No D&D is better than bad D&D.
Leave that table.
The best thing to do is to walk away.
If you wanna stay and play their game though, I wish you luck and hope you're able to make a good thing out of it.
Yeah, recently left a table where we had a trouble murder hobo player, wasn't fun
how do slimes have bludgeoning damage?
Yeah i get you, it's not worth it
But i mean, what could a redemption paladin do to someone who he knew harmed the group/stole from him
because they're great masses of matter that slam into you
Rn my goals are finding a homebrew game to join/hop onto and to learn the system, in no particular order
don't they engulf you, suffocate you, and digest you?
plenty of things. From sit them down and have a polite conversation to turn them over to the city guards, to stab them, to hold them upside down and shake them until the gold falls out 😛
I wish you luck 🙂 I have no spaces in my games sadly
I mean often they deal other types of damage as well, such as acid damage, but they're also masses of matter that slam into and crush you with their weight
wouldnt it go against the oath to attack them?
maybe. The oath is flavor. You get to decide what your tenets are at the end of the day and how far they go. You don't have to KILL them. You can simply...wound them a little.
Then after you deliver a much-called-for spanking, you sit them down and ask if they've learned their lesson and consider the matter closed.
Yeah, will consider it if I keep playing
This guy would probably try to kill my character if i did that though. No clue who would win
Of course...in all honesty...with a player like that, if you go down to their level like that they'll probably escalate things further rather than take it as a lesson learned, and they'll do something like kill you in your sleep or something
Yeah, stabbing them in the leg and using it as proof you're not screwing around isn't going against your oath
if an orchre jelly splits, does it still do 2d6+2 damage with plus 3 1d6 acid damage?
Yes.
What's with the 9 and 3 infront of the parenthesis?
Ochre Jelly ....
Actions
Pseudopod.
Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage.
The number outside the parenthesis is the average if you don't want to roll.
Using averages can speed up combat.
iamrazorwing is correct nod
how do you do overworld travel like outside neverwinter in lopm?
do you say how long you want to travel in a direction and use the pace per hour?
Hi! Ive just joined the server
I have no clue how to join a game or anything, can anyone help?

There are rules for travel pace: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#TravelPace
As for how to handle it, it's up to you. You can skip it entirely. You can ask your players to narrate what happens during that time. You can narrate it in a summary. You can include encounters (combat, NPCs, bad weather, natural obstacles, etc.). It's really up to you and what the group likes.
If you need more guidance, there are multiple YouTube videos for how the DM can handle travel in D&D.
i don't want to skip it but i was thinking of using the forgotten realms area map that came with the starter pack and was figuring out how to use it
I would recommend looking at the rules and some of the guides to give you ideas.
the starter pack wasn't really explicitly clear about it
Hit up YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QZyYZyj4oE
I find that this map tool is massively helpful
https://loremaps.azurewebsites.net/Maps/Faerun
I will use the path tool to figure out how much distance the party need to cover and divide it by their travel pace (linked above by razorwing) to see how many days it takes them
I use that same map.
Hi! I'm new to DND and wondering if there are any newcomer games I can join?
Same!!

I just applied on the channel thingy
See the above message to find games. You can use Discord's search function to specify keywords and limit yourself to particular channels.
If you look up here, these are the channels we have to help you fund games. Just an FYI many games are newcomer friendly, even if they don't explicitly say so. Just be upfront and honest with your skill level!
is the navigator a map maker?
That's up to you and the group. That person just says it's the person keeping the group on track. A map may or may not be involved.
right was gonna say whether I can show them the overworld map or not
the vid didn't really talk about travel pace and how much the party moves
hello! I am Loth. I’m brand new to DnD
Welcome! Check the pinned message here in the channel for links to some good resources to help you get started

that vid didn't really talk about hex crawl which is what came with lopm
What is lopm?
the starter pack
Lost Mine of Phandelver
meant to say lmop
Was lmop meant to be ran as a hex crawl?
The first website in the pin is glitching out
No. Not really lol
oh wait is overland ||supposed to be done in part 3?||
Someone help me
It depends but I would head ro #1029833015423143957 to avoid spoiling it here
Any tips for Monk?
it says fast pace = 4 miles traveled per hour and normal pace = 3 miles per hour. how do i calculate distance travelled or time spent when i'm using hex crawl of 5 miles per hex?
because i need to say how many hours passed per hex and do the random encounter roll and such, right?
or do i just use an actual ruler and don't snap the token to the grid?
Does anyone have a short campaign planned tomorrow that I can join I am new and would need help making a character sheet I am 13yo
Use the looking-for channels. See #find-a-game for info about the channels and how to use them.
6-mile hexes work better because they divide evenly into the three main rates of travel (18/24/30;slow/normal/fast)
With that you can figure out that over a day travelling at normal pace, the party will traverse through 4 hexes (24 divided by 6 = 4)
don't you need to go hex by hex? where you calculate an encounter and lost chance per hex?
you don't need to do anything, the DMG is just a guidline and you can do things however makes the most sense for you
The simplest solution for rolling against getting lost, and weather you meet a random encounter is having the party roll a survival check and for a random encounter at the start of every new day
DMG?
The Dungeon Master's Guide
I think this conversation is starting to move beyond the realm of #dnd-newcomers and would probably best fit in #dm-discussion if you'd like to continue it there.
Thats a very good idea, if you'd still like help with this feel free to ping me there @crude halo
I was invited to my first session today. We got to the beginning of character creation and I got extremely overwhelmed and ditched. I feel awful about it /=
just use a premade starter character
Sorry to hear that, but if you were being overwhelmed you shouldn't appologise for prioritising your mental health over anything else
Hopefully the group is accepting of you if you want to give it another go 👍 maybe the DM could give you a 1 on 1 to help make your character rather than do it at the table with others
I'm probably not going to give it another attempt. One look at those sheets and it fried my brain. I mostly just feel bad for the folk that invited me, I feel like a jerk.
I guess it was just too complex for me
Compared to a lot of tabletop RPGs D&D characters are very complex, i get that entirely
If it looks like something that looks fun to you, I'd encourage you to give it another try, but if you don't want to, then you know yourself best
A possible solution might be to ask your DM if you could use an NPC block for a few sessions to ease into the game, if character sheets are too daunting
I've had players like that in the past. What I did was basically I "hid" the sheet from them but still told them what to roll and why (I built the sheet with their high level input). Then after things started to kind of jive, we started to break down the sheet a bit.
Do you think that might work for you?
Not really sure. I should probably return these books they gave me though.
Your group would probably appreciate that lol. :)
Hi
Can you retreat and runaway from an encounter? what do you roll? dex checks?
Hello, everyone
hi
Hi, I'm new and idk what I'm doing all ik how to do is make a character sheet
Hi, so am I lol
I mean my character is a mage wood elf
Interested in seeing about finding a game for one of my concepts though.

And the last section has some help for finding games
Okay, thank you!
This is still confusing to me lol
Head down to the D&D Games section. Seems like we just post an add and hope for the best lol
See #find-a-game for how to use the #looking-for channels
Finding a group to play with (and ensuring schedules mesh) is actually one of the harder things about the game.
Yea, especially after looking in forums for over a year. Decided to give this a try for a more, person to person interaction instead of post/apply and hope.
There are free games out there. Also check out Roll20 (has a game finder) and Demiplane. There may be other places as well to find a group/game to join - like local comic/game stores, even local libraries.
Likewise
I just wanted to search a fun campaign to play
Well I can't find any
I have a mage
Cool. Which race?
reddit might be a good place to look? r/lfg is fairly active
Wood elf
Cool. I'm the good old classic boring human
We've listed many different ways you can find a game - our #looking-for channels, Demiplane, Roll20, your local game/comic store, grabbing a bunch of friends and say "hey let's try this game", etc.
I can only access the looking for bot channel
Other Discord servers that cater to D&D/TTRPGs
Jw what dose ttrpg mean?
Table top rpg
Also #looking-for-community is full of other D&D-related server postings
Oh
you don't get any stealth bonus to being prone?
Naturally, I don’t think so. But depending on the situation, I would give it to a player.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
How do reactions work vs ready? do opportunity attacks still work when you already attacked?
Opportunity attacks use your reaction, so what you did (or didn’t do) on your turn is moot unless you somehow used your reaction on said turn.
Readying an action means you forego your action until a trigger happens and then use your reaction to execute that action.
do you have to specify a trigger for the ready?
"If the goblin steps next to me, I move away."
Doesn't that make an opportunity attack for the goblin?
Hi, I'm 100% brand new to anything DnD related pretty much. I started playing the video game Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and I am really loving it so far; I'm not a stranger to in-depth strategy/RPG games. I'm considering trying DnD in real life but honestly I have no idea how it works. Am I supposed to play with the same group that agrees to meet regularly? Is there a character I can make that I can simply bring to other groups if they'll take me?
Yes to the first, no to the second (for the most part).
You could bounce around groups that only run single-session games, but that’s a lot of work to find them, get vetted, and such.
So the standard experience is finding a group and a DM and playing through a campaign I'm assuming
That’s probably the most common approach. Not the only one.
Essentially, yes. There are groups that do one-shots and groups that do campaigns. One-shots are usually easier to orchestrate for random people.
There’s also westmarches, but that’s a whole other thing.
Oh lawd
Just an FYI, Wrath of the Righteous uses Pathfinder 1e rules and they are quite different from D&D5e
If you're looking for an in-person group, you might check to see if the city you live in has a subreddit. I occasionally see posts about people looking for players.
Also, your town might have a tabletop gaming facebook group.
I see, thanks for the info!
If you have a headset and you're looking for an online group, roll20 has a sizeable community of groups looking for players. But since you're new, I might try to avoid that. Learning roll20 and 5e at the same time could be pretty daunting.
So I kinda have a character idea.
Since I'm a flat out noob (I only played ONE session of ONE campaign ;-;), I was thinking of making a character as clueless as I:
A wannabe hero who grew up as the son of a blacksmith who always dreamed about being a hero, but being Flat-out Clueless. He knows how to use a sword and always fantasizes, but frankly, he has no idea what's out there because he grew up in his little bubble of a world.
I need to build on this somehow...
Why is he clueless? Is he just naive? Heavily sheltered?
Sheltered, not heavily so, naiive absolutely
I want to avoid making my first character knowledgeable and intelligent of the world because, well, I lack the actual knowledge of the game and lore to do so myself
I want a character that's going to be as clueless as I am
Well the fun thing about that, every game is different and doesn't use the same lore
Exactly
I can guarantee my forgotten realms looks very different than other people's version. The main thing is to work it out with your DM
Why doesn't the starter rulebook mention flanking?
It's an optional rule
Cause it’s an optional rule in the DMG
If you regularly use miniatures, flanking gives combatants a simple way to gain advantage on attack rolls against a common enemy.
why "miniatures"? Why not tokens?
I feel like miniatures is a catch-all term.
https://locator.wizards.com/ store finder not updated a lot but it might get you started IRL also look for places nerds hang out. comic shops, libraries, weird goth shops etc ask around or stick an advert up some where
I just need a good shot at getting accepted into a campaign so I can really start developing the character from there. That's the hard part given how new I am 🥴
Just keep searching
Do you work in a location where your co-workers might be open to playing? That's how my first group got started, and our first campaign ended up running over a year.
It can take a while to find the right game so don’t fret is your still looking after a few weeks, months but once you find that right game for you it’s awesome
Fortunately, my current college schedule only has classes on tuesday and thursday afternoons.
.... That said I'm a soon to be law student, and I'll be in law school this fall
is there any god or oath for paladins that doesnt make them necessarily good or holy?
Oath of Ancients, Oath of Vengeance
ty
Also, paladins don't necessarily have to serve a god!
coolio, first time playing a character who isnt doing there own thing lmao
what happens when you have a total party wipe?
That's up you and your players on how you want resolve it
what's great about dexterity and acrobatics? it doesn't seem like it can do as much as strength
like i'm surprised climbing isn't dexterity
Dexterity may increase your AC and saving throws.
what about combat and roleplay?
If you do rock climbing you need strength.
Some weapons allow you to use dex
Dexterity is good for ranged, light, and versatile weapons
It's not really a roleplay stat
i do rock climbing and most of the people need the skinny jogger's physique to rock climb well, less fat to weigh you down
This is why there are six abilities.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
The Strength ability score has nothing to do with physique.
acrobatics seems like you'll never use it. why would you do dives, rolls, somersaults, and flips?
That said, it's the DM's call to use a different ability for a skill check.
Never underestimate the sort of things your players will want to do
Want to cross that tightrope, wooden beam or weak wooden stairs. Roll for Acrobatics.
Ability skill checks are situational.
tightrope? why not just grab it cross legged hanging upside down
If you don't want to use Acrobatics then don't be proficient in it.
Then that's the DM's call if they decide if it's an Acrobatics check.
How you do it is narrative flavour.
i'm just trying to understand what actions a dex player could have
so that they have more things to do compared to the other stats
i'm reading it
i can only think of a rope trap home alone style where you jump over the rope and the enemies fail and go prone
like a rope pulled across a hallway to trip people
Acrobatics can sometimes be called for to prevent falling.
My tip, don't stress about finding ways. Let your players tell you what they want to do and make an educated guess as to what they would roll
As for tightrope walking, that would be faster walking than crawling. So yes, you could crawl across using legs etc. Or you could make an acrobatics to walk across.
well i want to teach first timers with dex as well
Acrobatics is also defense against grapple
Some builds will be better suited to taking acrobatics vs grapple than taking athletics vs grapple.
Acrobatics and Athletics can sometimes be used for the same task, just in different ways. Want to get free of restraints? Acrobatics to slip free or Athletics to break free.
I'm reading that
A character needs one gallon of water per day, or two gallons per day if the weather is hot. A character who drinks only half that much water must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion at the end of the day. A character with access to even less water automatically suffers one level of exhaustion at the end of the day.
A water skin can hold up to 5 lbs of water which is like ~0.1 gallons
so what are you supposed to normally do?
Handwave it
why would it be written in the PHB then?
That's up to you to track but I handwave it when the PCs are near settlements and not in a desert.
i mean if they're travelling in the overworld, it makes sense if they camp 3-4 days
You're the DM, you decide the RAW rules to use or not.
I'm interested in using them as resource management, water, light sources, and encumbrance as it sounds more fun
i'm not that interested in favoring only superheroes style adventuring
If you're the DM then you decide how much RAW you want to stick to at your table.
but i don't know what's the proper procedure regarding procuring water and how to carry a gallon or whatever with a 5 lbs waterskin
I will say, many people don't like using those rule so talk with your players and come to a compromise as to what will be most fun for everyone
That's very old school D&D way where we had to micromanage our resources (torches, water, food, etc) in the dungeon.
i mean i don't see the big issue, just hire a porter to carry all the resources
Getting beyond the scope of this channel, might wanna move over to #dm-discussion
can clerics not cast spells that require a free hand if they have a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other?
Depends
You're best off reading the rules on spellcasting, and cleric foci (holy symbols)
Hey wsg!
Both campaigns I joined died after the session 0s because of shenanigans<3 so thought I'd join the discord server
Oof, know the feel
And welcome~!
Thanks!
I found the community thing, I'm looking through it now
Aaa all the campaigns are like super early in the morning for me
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
Timezones are a pain. Lot of my games are in the middle of the night xD
Honestly I'd prefer midnight lol
I'm so sad the campaign I was in didn't work out because I had this funny little guy
Lil Grung man
Same, I can NOT wake up early
I'm so far from a morning person lol, my eyes don't work for at least an hour after waking up
Maybe try the #looking-for-community posts - these are other D&D related servers some who may have games running at times more suitable for you.
Greetings adventurers!
My name is Dave, and I'm excited to be here in this Dungeons and Dragons community. I must confess, I've never played D&D before, but I've dabbled in similar role-playing games and have always been intrigued by the vast and immersive world of D&D.
To be honest, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the whole experience, but also excited to learn the ropes and join in on the fun. I'm flabbergasted by the sheer amount of rules, lore, and character options, but I'm eager to dive in and explore this fascinating world.
I'm hoping to find some friendly folks here who are willing to show me the ways of D&D, and maybe even teach me some of the insider jokes. Speaking of which, why did the DM cross the road? To get to the other side of the story, of course!
So, here I am, a newbie adventurer seeking guidance and friendship. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and embarking on epic quests together. Let's roll some dice and have some fun!
Hello fellow adventurer! I may be new to the server but im not new to the game! Id love to assist you in your exploration into forgotten realms!

Of course! I love to help players!

Im still just waiting for a message request to pop up honestly
i'm still busy at the moment, will come back to you in a few! Sorry for making you waiting
Dont worry, i dont really have much better to do!

Are there any tutorial videos of a step by step guide to learn the basics of DND because I've tried the beginners guide and I just couldn't wrap my head around it.
Maybe try this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO2qv5Uin9c
Handbooker Helper is also a popular choice.
I remember when playing 3e in Neverwinter Nights that I saw Sorcerer as better than Wizard because you were able to cast more spells more times before resting. Is that the case in 5e where you can do more casting?
Sorcerers know more spells innately, but wizards can learn more spells overall and prepare a limited number from them.
The number of spell slots they have is the same, though.
can't sorcerers cast more instances of a specific spell?
No.
The amount of castings of any given spell is tied to the class’s spell slots, and those are, if I recall, consistent among full casters in 5e.

I thought I heard that there are certain advantages where you sum 2 dice instead of 1 rather than picking the higher die, am I remembering wrong?
Are you talking about advantage/disadvantage?
yes
That's advantage (and disadvantage) and applies to attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks (d20 rolls)
but I think there are different kinds of advantage/disadvantage?
No, just one
right so for those you pick the higher die when advantage?
If you have any number of sources of advantage, you roll two d20s and pick the higher
If you have any number of sources of disadvantage, you roll two d20s and pick the lower
If you have any number of both, it's a normal roll
How does shield spell work? says 1 reaction for casting time, so does that mean you can't do an action as you ready a reaction?
You don’t ready a reaction. You regain a reaction on your turn, and some abilities—like Shield—let you use that reaction on your turn. You’d have to wait until your next turn to get your reaction back.
There are reactions other than the one provided by the Ready action -- like Shield.
so how do you cast shield? i'm confused
You can use a reaction any time the trigger condition occurs.
In Shield's case, any time "you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell", you can then cast the spell.
The Ready action simply lets you define your own trigger and reaction for a round.
(And once you use a reaction, you can't use another until the start of your next turn.)
How do bards work? Like how do they inspire etc.
That's a very vague question
They work how their rules say they work
Bard inspiration works as described in the feature:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#BardicInspiration-75
In particular,
You can inspire others through stirring words or music.
If that's the case then how do you gain inspiration?
The bard themselves don’t gain it, but others players get it from the bard through the class ability as described.
Did you read the section I linked to?
Yes, I'm talking about the inspiration not bardic inspiration. The one that lets you re-roll it's in the top corner
That's given out by the DM
(It has nothing to do with bards per se.)
Your DM can choose to give you inspiration for a variety of reasons. Typically, DMs award it when you play out your personality traits, give in to the drawbacks presented by a flaw or bond, and otherwise portray your character in a compelling way. Your DM will tell you how you can earn inspiration in the game.

Hey , how do i find a group to play with online?
You can have a look through the listings in #looking-for-players
I have seen people recommend Reddit's r/LFG and the Roll20 forums as good places to cast your net as well
Yep. Skim various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&D Beyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
What is proficiency for spells?
The proficiency bonus?
i mean how do you get it? is it a proficiency for a specific spell or school of spells?
I don't understand the context. Where do you see the rules refer to spell proficiency?
Your character has proficiency bonus based on your character level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
Some spells require the caster to make an attack roll
to determine whether the spell effect hits the intended
target. Your attack bonus with a spell attack equals your
spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus.
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your
spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus. This
number is on the character sheets for the cleric and the
wizard, and in the statistics for a monster that casts spells.
See my post above yours.
Your proficiency bonus is your proficiency bonus, based on your character level.
You can be proficient in a skill or a tool, which you then add your proficiency bonus (plus the appropriate modifier) to when rolling the skill check.
If you have Expertise, then you double your proficiency bonus for that particular skill/tool.
when doing LMOP for a first time D&D game with first time people, should i ask advice on what I should do as a DM?
Ask your party, you mean?
yeah
Depends on how collaborative you want the game to be.
It's definitely okay to ask.
i guess it's a given to ask help on understanding mechanics
But i don't want to make the group wait around while i solo think about things
or have to figure out something
or thinking on what should happen or occur
As the DM, you basically listen because you are waiting for what the players want to do. Based on their decision, you improv on how to act/react.
basically i don't want to bog the game down from me trying to figure something out
Then go for it.
Then yeah, you can ask your players.
You need to hone on your improv skills, think quickly on the spot based on the players do/say.
You can ask #dnd-rules.
You can just make something up to keep the game going, then find the answer later.
There's no right or wrong here.
You also will likely go slowly since you (and they) are learning. As long as everyone's patient, there shouldn't be a problem.
You don't need to memorize all of the rules. The books are there for reference.
Take cue cards to write notes down.
There are DM "cheat sheets" with the fundamental rules (google them and print them out)
I've been DMing for 40+ years and I don't know all the rules. I pause the game to look things up (D&D Beyond's search function makes it much easier than going through my physical books).
Worse comes to worse, I make a call for a ruling and later if I realize I'm wrong I'll tell my players and maybe even retcon the ruling.

FYI: You might want to consider changing your name here.
Right right ik but I tried earlier and couldn't....I will....as soon as I can-
There we go
Brava. Didn't want you to get hit by the bot.
Do you have questions about D&D?
I mean....I wanna try it? But no idea how to mostly

There's also a ton of other options to find games if you're focused on online play. If you're looking for in-person, you might try any local games/comics/hobby shops, libraries, and schools for tabletop clubs and programming.
Check out our channels here, then, for a start. If you want other search options, see this message: #dnd-newcomers message
So.. no more Westmarches channel?
#looking-for-community is the channel for advertising westmarches and community servers
Don't believe there has ever been a Westmarches channel in this server
There was in the D&D server pre-merge.
how does wizard and cleric preparing work? for cleric do you get a set # of spells chosen at character creationand choose which you can prepare from that chosen set?
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
So you have access to the full list of cleric spells appropriate to your level. (See the table on the class details page.) Then you can prepare a certain number of spells using the calculation above.
Wizards do not have access to the full spell list of their class, but they have particular spells scribed in a spellbook. They can select their spells from that pool using a similar calculation.
so wizards choose which spells they get on levelup and then choose to scribe them into the spellbook as a way to "prepare"?
Yep.
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free.
i mean for wizard: once you get those spells from levelup, do you need to prepare them?
and do you have a max prepare?
Greetings; new DM here. I see that the #looking-for channels are good for finding players, DMs, or paid campaigns. Has anyone used them, and is it usually a good way to find random groups and/or oneshots/sustained campaigns?
The Wizard table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your wizard spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
If you don't prepare a spell, it's not prepared and you can't cast it.
^ With one exception: a wizard can cast a ritual spell in their book as a ritual even if it's not prepared.
(You would not have the option of using a spell slot for it.)
@molten crow in here
Got it

So I took the lowest rolls and got the new ones 15, 18, 11, 16, 13, 14
getting an 18 is really good
roll high?
what kind of character would you like to play? thatll help us decide what numbers we want in what stats
i have a 1st level half-orc barbarian...basic stuff...but im also interested in the magic classes, and druid and woodland-type PCs.
Well a character who acts as a nice person but with a despise against humans with power
ok let me rephrase. what would you like your character to be able to do?
Oh like mostly magic with a bit of hand combat
Hello, I have been playing a sorcerer for a bit and am now level 5 in my friends dnd game, I am trying to decide between adding a +1 to dexterity and constitution which would make there rolls be a +3 instead of a +2, but I’m trying to decide whether I should do that or gain a feat instead, is there a feat for sorcerers that is worth getting as soon as possible or should I just get better rolls on dexterity and constitution?
Like mostly uses magic but is not entirely weak in hand combat
I want to do what is most familiar to me right now...which would be fighter-type (barbarian, fighter) and wizard...not as familiar with sorcerer/warlock though I am interested.
A better question for #character-discussion!
I'd suggest buffing your con. It'll help you maintain concentration on important spells.
I like to get into the details of the character and the rollplaying aspect...like if my pc is low intelligence i really try to keep to that
Alright thank you.
You could play a melee focused ranger, warlock, druid or maybe an eldritch knight fighter.
ill check them out and roll up some 1st level PCs.
I assume there are games here for 1st level-ers
I chose warlock which I heard charisma is supposed to be one of the highest abilities
Yeah charisma is the warlock's spellcasting ability. A higher charisma will help your spells land more often.
cool...thank you all
Yeah, the Quick Build suggestion for a warlock says this:
First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution.
Sorry guitarn but i am already trying to help someone
Not that you have to listen to it, but it's generally good advice.
imma go read the info that was given me above...be back later
thanks again for the warm and helpful welcome
Ok ok so I placed the 18 on charisma and the 16 on constitution
What are your stats again?
I'd go DEX third, generally.
15, 18, 11, 16, 13, and 14
And then the rest in whatever order you like.
Warlock stat priorty should look something like this
cha -> con -> dex -> str/int/wis in any order
I left wisdom with 11 intat 13 str at 14 dex at 15 cons at 16 and cha at 18
Feel free to move things around though and let the roleplaying aspect of it guide you. I once played a very smart warlock with a better int than his con or dex
Ok
Don't feel pressured to make the most optimal, mechanically beneficial choices you can. Get creative with it and have fun.
I chose half elf
Half elf very epic
Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/20-half-elf#Half-ElfTraits
Your charisma is already maxed out at level 1
Oh so instead of 18 it’s a 20?
Yep!
Cool cool
final stats should be str 14, dex 16, con 16, int 14, wis 11, and cha 20
Yupppp
dont be afraid of that low wis score. having a low score can lead to some awesome roleplaying moments.
Kool yea I am fine with low wisdom 😅
One message removed from a suspended account.
Liekly because you don't own the book which the leonin comes from on whatever software you're using.
So, its Max 20, you can get?
They're in Mythic Odysseys of Theros
One message removed from a suspended account.
Sorry question my proficiency bonus is the level of my character?
without magic items or some very high level class features, yes
at level 1, its +2
it increases by +1 every 4 levels
They get a higher walking speed, darkvision, claws, a Daunting Roar ability, and a couple skill proficiencies.
so level 5, 9 , 13, and 17

character level
Ooh ok
One message removed from a suspended account.
This table shows the proficiency bonus at each level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
It ranges from +2 at level 1 to +6 at level 20.
Your proficiency bonus is added to your attack rolls for all spells and for weapons you're proficient in
You also add it to skill checks and saving throws you're proficient in
In short, you're more likely to succeed at the things you're proficient in, because you get to add your proficiency bonus.
You're good at the things you're good at.
So a wizard and a fighter in lvl 2 with same dex and strenght at 11 ex, can hit an ac 16 at the same roll?
With what?
With a staff ex
If the wizard is using a weapon (melee or ranged) that they're not proficient in then they don't add their proficiency bonus to it.
To explain a few terms
Attack roll. You roll one of these when you're trying to hit something. That could mean with a weapon, or a spell.
Ability/skill check. You roll one of these when you're trying to do something that isn't hitting something, and usually has a chance of failure. This could be climbing a difficult surface or convincing a shopkeep to give you a discount.
Saving throw. You make one of these when you try to avoid an effect that might damage or negatively impact you. You could be dodging out of the way of a lightning bolt, or resisting a magical effect that might try to take control of you.
Fighters are proficient in all simple and martial weapons so they add their proficiency bonus to their melee/ranged weapon attacks.
And I guess a wizard is in a staff 🧐
Both the wizard and fighter are level 2 so their proficiency bonus is +2. Staff is a melee weapon and their Str of 11 gives them a +0 modifier. Staves are simple weapons that both the wizard and fighters are proficient in, so they have an attack roll with a +2 bonus (from their PB).
So in lvl 2 They Are equal a fighter and a wizard 😂
If they have equal stats, sure.
Strange rules..
Yes but it's very unlikely a fighter would have such a low Strength score.
Str and Con are the two primary stats for Fighters.
And a wizard that prioritizes strength is probably gonna struggle in other areas.
In add 2 ed to hit ac table..
Strength would be a dump stat for a wizard.
Im an old 2 edition player. Reading up on 5 edition 😂😂
5E has bounded accuracy. Fighters in past editions attack bonus went up per level.
Yes, it was very odd when I first got into 5E but it make sense when you understand WotC's design decision to keep monsters' AC low so that PCs hit more often (it's not fun for players to miss all the time against AC 25+, which was the norm in 3.5E...)
