Welcome to the server!
thanks
how creative can you get with your character
As creative you want within the limits set by your DM in terms of the expectations of the game they're running
As creative within the rules.
A DM might be more or less restrictive than the rules as-is.
ok thanks
If you ask to be a centaur and the DM says there are no centaurs in the game setting, then you probably can't be a centaur.
If you ask to be a flying spaghetti monster and the DM says "go for it!", then the sky's the limit.
gotta find a dm that will let me be 2 kobolds in a suit of armor
Yeah, since that one steps outside the rules a little, the DM would have to come up with some rules of their own.
But it's not beyond the realm of possibility.
Does anyone know how damage rolls translate into damage done to players/enemies?
At it's simplest, you just subtract that amount from their current hit points.
But a target might have immunity, resistance, or vulnerability which could change the final number.
yh but like if the player rolls a d6 is the damage what they rolled?
Or a reaction like the Stone’s Endurance of a goliath.
plus any modifiers
For example, if it's a strength based weapon that rolls a d6 and their strength is +3 and they roll a 4, that's a total of 7 damage
You can find the full rules for damage here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageandHealing
makes sense now
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
I want to join a DND party but im not able to access the looking for a DM
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
We have four different game channels to help you find a game.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared experience.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted, either in the thread attached to that post or by sending a direct message to the poster. To post an ad of your own, follow these simple steps:
- Head to #1075498333705089084.
- Type
/looking-forinto the new message bar. - A list of choices will appear. Select the channel you want and press
enter. - Fill out the private form that appears. No one else can see this form until you submit it, at which point it will be posted to the appropriate channel.
Users can post only once per channel every seven days. After that time, your existing post will be automatically removed and you’re free to post again.
thanks, sorry
No need to apologise
Hi I'm new to DnD and was wondering if there are any campains that I could join. Level 1 friendly?

#looking-for-players hello, anyone on?
#750812887697588356 hello, anyone looking for a player?
@civic ferry that's not how it works
sorry new to this
Read the embedded message a few posts up
how powerful is poly morph
What's a tiefling
A tiefling is a humanoid with vaguely devilish features. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/7-tiefling
Tyy
Polymorph can be powerful as it allows access to abilities and stats players normally don't have access to, but there are limits to the spell.
Hello again
Is it mandatory to write a back story?
Ask your DM.
Mandatory in general, no. But it's up to the table and the DM.
Tnx
If you don't give a DM a backstory then don't expect the DM to help flesh out and help expand your character's character development.
My players have given me backstories that I take to weave personal side quests during the campaign.
Give me nothing and I'll give you nothing in return.
Also, backstories do not need to be a novel. They can be a few paragraphs or even a few sentences.
I typically ask for answers to 3 questions:
- What did you do before you became an adventurer?
- Why do you want to be an adventurer?
- What do you want for the future?
Most DMs don't do the 3 questions like I do though. I just found it helps some players focus their backstory. Either to come up with one, or to reduce the scale of their backstory to something more readable.
I like a good Swiss-cheese backstory: full of holes.
A barbarian in my Radiant Citadel campaign, for example, said he's the last of his tribe.
What happened to the rest of them? Who knows! It's not immediately important at the start of the game.
And that leaves an easy spot for me to build off it as the game unfolds.

Hey, new to dnd and i’m looking to get into online dnd. What would i need to begin?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
I got myself a starter set but nothing else yet
?new
Here's a few excellent resources to get you started!
• Try this guided interactive adventure to create your first character and learn the basics of D&D.
• The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
• For a bite-sized breakdown on specific rules, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series on YouTube.
• You can create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
• Get advice on making your first character, then check out the rest of the New Player's Guide articles.
• Start here to learn how to be a Dungeon Master.
• Get advice on starting strong for your first game, then browse the rest of the Dungeon Master Tips series for more.
• Check out #find-a-game or this article for instructions on finding a group.
• Get advice for playing online with this article or video.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
If you plan on playing, make a character but don't get too attached to it as whoever you find to DM may have limits, specifications, etc. for character creation.
Especially don't roll for stats, many DMs require observing your rolls. Use point buy or Standard Array instead and replace with rolls if the DM indicates that.
For places to find games, you can use what OldManYellingAtClouds just linked and you can also find games on the various Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, and Owlbear Rodeo if that is where you'd like to play.
Many VTTs have looking for group options
Thanks for the assistance
as a warlock everytime i level up i can replace 1 spell i know with another one right?
also is there a chart anywhere that breaks down the level/number of people suggested for certain CRs?
CR is based on a party of four PCs.
and whats the ratio? since CR goes to 30 it seems
Use an encounter calculator like koboldplus.club if you want to customize the number of PCs, their levels, and the number of monsters.
Using CR is more of an art than a science because it doesn't take into consideration with things such as magic items, spells, experience of the players, etc.
cool and when it comes to designing encounters lets say playing curse of strahd should i only use monsters present in the book? and i know you could technically use any but i mean if youre tryna run it "authentically"
hey as a noob getting into dnd where is a good place to start
we are 3 all together and were just wondering whats the best place to start

is there a place where you can find out/stay informed about any dnd kickstarted/crowdfunded projects?
Kickstarter?
They have a D&D tag you can keep your eyes on: https://www.kickstarter.com/discover/advanced?ref=nav_search&result=all&term=d%26d
And they would be third party so not something you would talk about here but in #third-party or #non-dnd-topics since WotC doesn't do crowdfunding (yet...)
Where do I put a looking for dm command in
In #1075498333705089084, per the instructions.
It can go in other channels, too, but that's where it's recommended.
Please read #find-a-game - it has instructions on how to use the bot to create a post in the #looking-for channels.
I am super new to D&D and want help creating a character before i even dip a toe into joining a game, so where can I ask for help?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes
Does it say something about this I missed? If so, sorry for the dumb question
Some people ask for help without reading the rules so I just wanted to know where you stood.
General new player questions are welcome here but if you more help on building a character then #character-discussion may be a better place.
Thanks!
I’ve always got to a table and then created a character based on what the dm outlined for their world or adventure. I’ve never built a character and then shopped it around or requested a dm let me use it. Just a thought. See what the dm has to offer before making a character for that campaign, and ideally the dm will help you make a character and walk you through it.
Good to know
Can someone help me with a question related to ability scores and modifiers? I have the 5e book in front of me (open to the ability score info). I rolled 13, 13, 13, 13, 11, 10. I'm a half-elf cleric. If I use the modifier table then I should add +1 to the 13s and +0 to the 10 & 11. Here is where my question comes in. On the page before the modifier table the book shows an ability score summary table and shows that the half-elf has a racial increase of +2 on charisma. So, when entering my numbers on my sheet (given that I use a 13 for charisma) would I enter it as 16 (13 + modifier of 1 + racial increase of 2)? Or is the racial modifier what I put in the proficiency bonus section?
Neither. Your modifier comes from your total score. You do not add your modifier to that score otherwise it would just continue to go up infinitely since your score is what is used to calculate your modifier.
Your racial bonus gets added to the ability score that you have chosen. So if you have a 13 in charisma and your racial bonus is +2 charisma then your total charisma score is 15. This means your charisma modifier is a +2.
Hello! As a rogue, does my sneak attack works while stealthed and attacking with a hand crossbow ?
When you use your Cunning Action feature to take the hide action you make a stealth check
If this stealth check is high enough (your DM will tell you if it is because it varies based on the enemies) you are considered hidden
A hidden attacker, has **advantage **on their attack because the enemy cannot see you, this ticks the box on sneak attacks prereq here:
Sneak Attack.
...to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll
So yes, if you are hidden from an enemy, you get sneak attack (because you have advantage)
Okay thanks because i had an argument with my dm,he kept saying that hand crossbow is not working with sneak attack because its not “finesse” while all these years ive been using it like that in many campaigns
Sneak Attack.
The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
The hand crossbow is not finesse, correct. But it IS a ranged weapon, thus fulfilling the criteria above
Thanks again

i just watched the movie without actually knowing anything about the game itself, just wanna know if the red wizards are an actual thing and if the main antagonist is a real character in the lore or whatever
Not the main antagonist, but they are a thing in the Forgotten Realms. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Red_Wizards_of_Thay
For future reference, lore questions are for #dnd-lore.
Depends on who you mean by the main antagonist lol. But that's really a conversation for #1084851929903026196

This article has some good beginner advice:

But if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask!
ok im here again, character is practically perfect in my eyes, but the background/backstory aspects are hardly touched
hmm, I write poetry. I'm pretty good at character stories
I can help if you'd likw

Backstories are always the fun part
you see this is the backstory of a dyslexic kobold wizard
Hello!! I have a campaign I might want to get started- I was wondering if anyone wanted to join? I am relatively new to being a dm but this story I have is very good.
My point exactly
Thats where the fun begins

Huh I thought we had some links in the ?new command towards that xD
that was the one that caught my eye first, but then wasnt sure if others were better/easier
It is made for new Players and DM's and a bunch of people have started with it :) I can also recommend Dragons of Icespire Peak. Very neat little starter adventure which has more additional content on D&D Beyond as well which goes up to level 13 :)
thank you 😄
New DM, assuming you run one starter campaign, and then bolt on another. How do you balance/scale the second adventure?
Many official adventures include a section about if you have played a certain adventure beforehand or recommend some you can play after :)
And with a little bit of prep you can make them go seemlessly into eachother
awesome thanks, Probably getting ahead of myself, but i like to understand everything in front of me!

oops sorry
The best campaign that you can do a a new dm
There are a few adventures designed for new dms in mind, however Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond
Is there anything really worth buying on dnd-beyond as a beginner?
Playerhandbook is always a good buy
you dont need to buy anything to play but the PHB is probably a good deal, especially when its on sale
What about Xanathar‘s, Tasha‘s,…?
And the subscription? Being able to use homebrew stuff isn’t that big of a deal for someone just starting out right?
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
I wouldnt buy everything at once before your got a bit of experience with the site so you can decide if the overall experience is worth it to you.
if you decide that DDB is great for your then yeah, MM, DMG, Xanathars, tashas etc become good deals
You can also buy pieces individually as you need them: a single subclass or some new spells, for example.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Of course, if you are gonna buy the book, now’s a good time for it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1473-get-up-to-40-off-d-d-essentials-for-a-limited-time
So my first dnd game starts next weekend
Nice! Got your character ready?
Starting my first campaign tomorrow so hyped
okay so i seen the dnd references sale, but im new to the game, ive played a few pf2e (actually just played a game too), im loving the whole ttrpg thing, and especially appreciate foundry. im wondering if its worth spending CAD 160 (for both physical/digital copies of the 3 core books) if a new set of rules are coming out next year. what do you guys think?
If you haven’t played yet, there’s no reason to buy the books. The free Basic Rules give you plenty to test out the system, and if you like it, then the books would be a good investment. In theory, the new rules should be compatible with 5e, and so buying the current core rules doesn’t mean they become useless when the new books release.
how often do they go on sale, ive fomo with the sale going on lmao
The digital books do go on sale throughout the year. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know if a later sale will be better or worse than this one.
They are always running sales
okay, i mean if they go one sale more than once a year (even if unpredictable unlike steam sales), i should try it out then before shelling out close to 200$
This sale's a pretty good one.
okay ya i just have fomo with the sale on going, thanks guys
You can search sale in:dnd-tweets if you want to compare.
The Player's Handbook, at least, is cheaper now than it was on Black Friday.
Tasha's, too.
ill likely buy that one
oh idk seems redundant if im planning to wait on a sale for the 3-core book set
The "Base Game" so to speak
Are you planning on dming?
dude my first campaign is going downhill, but Im enjoying every second of it.
Hello, not sure if this is the right place to ask. Apologies if not. I'm doing a one shot, this is in total like my 4th campaign. My DM is introducing the idea of starting currency, 600G for each member of the party to buy starting items that don't require attunement.
Wondering if there are any resources for best starting items within a budget? Have found some helpful sites as far as race compatibility with classes, was just curious if similar things existed for purchasable items. Am playing a Yuan Ti Sorcerer.
I would head to #character-discussion
Thanks!
Hey! I'm looking to start my first ever character in Adventurers League and was wondering if there were any online resources people would recommend
"Resource" is a little vague. Is there something specific you were looking for?
Mainly to build a character. I've got one in mind, a gnome monk named Chuck Gnorris
I've also found the D&D beyond site. is there a difference between beyond and Adventurers league?
I would definitely look at the player guide for AL as to the sort of restrictions you have for creating a character - https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league/player-info
We also have #adventurers-league
D&D Beyond is a digital toolset for D&D (and the first site I'd recommend).
Adventurer's League is a set of specific rules for organized play.
They're not necessarily related, aside from just being D&D... things.
But you can definitely build an Adventurer's League compatible character using D&D Beyond.
Excelllent, thank you both for the help. I'm going to use D&D beyond to create a character and try and find a game near me
Good luck!
Hello! I've played DnD before but it has been a long time and I've forgotten a lot of things. Could someone explain how bonus actions work? It seems I have access to one since I'm playing a lizardfolk.
!rule bonus action
Okay guess Avrae doesn't want to help in this channel
A bonus action is a feature that some classes/monsters have that provide some additional action they can do along with their normal action.
For instance at a 2nd level, rogues gain the "cunning action" which gives them the ability to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action as a bonus action.
You can only take a bonus action when you have a feature that says you can.
(The only one all character have by default is Two-Weapon Fighting, which has conditions on when it can be used.)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
But you can take one bonus action on every turn, if you have one available.
(If you have multiple available, you can only use one each turn.)
You can find the bonus action rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
!rule initiative
Try /rule initiative
/rule initiative
Is Avrae connected to this channel?
You may need to do it in #ddb-avrae-commands
^ That I know works
Thank you
The /lookup commands work in any channel. It'll DM you the results.
Today I learned... lol
The prefixed commands like !rule only work in #ddb-avrae-commands.
Hello
I’m gonna be honest I have no clue how to play lol. I made my character but I haven’t done a single campaign yet 😂

^ Lots of useful resources to help get you started
Same! Lol
what made ME try to play was my autism which made me hyperfixate on this game, although I am too shy to even try and join a game
I suggest reading the free basic rules first - no need to memorize it but get a feel for how character sheets work and basic mechanics.
Ayo kinda same 🤝
oh cool resources lemme just📸 📸
Also maybe dark souls/elden ring makes me wanna play, my character is literally a tarnished
Yeah it can be alot. But the basic rules, supplemented with the handbook helper series can help break things down quite nicely!
FYI, those are also pinned to the channel lol
One thing to note is D&D is a socially collaborative game - I see some are mentioning being shy. To find a group to play with you will need to be willing to engage socially with folks. But it's a great way to have fun with friends (might even make more friends).
But welcome and hope you have fun in your future D&D adventures!
man i wished i wan't so bad at souls like cuz i might enjoy them if i didn't suck
Well the plus side is this game is not very soulslike at all
Just grind for runes or souls (depending on the game) and it makes things a lot smoother when playing and fighting. If you aren’t the best I recommend trying to get a lot of endurance for blocking with a sheild because each hit takes some endurance and if you don’t have enough endurance it takes some health away
ik but i was just awnsering to his comment i just forgot to awnser
Let's keep things on topic, please. (We've got #non-dnd-topics if you want to talk video games.)
oh yeah sorry we kinda got out of the rails
Anyway, if it's just mic/camera shy, there are text-only games as well.
Sorry bout that. Also like your banjo and kazooie pfp
fr??!?!?!?!
Yep!
like, it's not that much of a good thing but it helps
They can be a little harder to come by but they definitely do exist and are just as fun!
I'm in a few of 'em just because they're easier to fit into a busy schedule. 😅
I think another thing that made me want to play is when my brother got a sharktooth necklace it came with some sort of dragon figure (thinking about making that a character or enemy)
Hello there I'm new to the community after playing my first session with friends
well i have the whole next week free so maybe i can build up courage and try to get into a game
Hello! I’m relatively new to DnD having only done a oneshot and listened to a DnD podcast. My question is does it matter what campaign I should look to do first? For example is it okay to look for a DM hosting a campaign in the forgotten realms or is that something not intended for beginners? Thank you
We can do that together if you like, I could add you as a friend
the forgotten realms is just where a majority of the adventures are set! it's not really beginner locked or anything, it just depends on the DM themselves and how they're running the game
that being said, there are simpler campaigns out there for beginners, like lost mines of phandelver
also rn im making a hero forge character while talking and i think it'll be done in a while so i might post it
sure👍
Honestly, whatever seems interesting to you. But there are some campaigns that are more geared to new players, such as Lost Mines of Phandelver, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Wild Beyond the Witchlight
Ahh. Okay. I thought that was the case but just wanted to make sure. Im most familiar with the forgotten realms since thats where the podcast campaign took place as well as the DnD movie!
I made mine but I didn’t really add a backstory since it’s mostly already in the race part, also I have no creativity when it comes to past story events
hello i'm new to DQD and i played my first session today
I'm want to play more and explore the forgotten realms
ok it's done imma try and post some photos of it if i don't screw it up cuz i'ts ben a while since i send photos in discord
Is #dnd-minis where you post about some figures you made or found?
minis is for irl figures if im not wrong
Everyone seems to have differing opinions, however I suggest waiting to totally fill out your backstory so that you can help fit it to the game you are in
Yeah, I might just do that along the way if anything pops up into my head
Yup, just be sure to credit the artist if it is not yours! We also have #dnd-heroforge-etc if it's from there lol
ok guys wish me luck posting the photos cuz i suck at it yay!!!!
i wish you luck
The thing is I don’t know who the artist is, it was just some random thing that came in a box with something else I ordered. It doesn’t have anything on it or who it’s by
I think it’s made from metal because it has that metallicy smell and touch
god im so scared to screw up the posting
If you own it then you are good lol
If you find it online, then you should credit the artist
Okay
y'know what? forget it i'll post the photos later when i build up courage
Photos of what?
a heroforge character i made while talking with u guys
That's awesome! We actually have a whole channel devoted to those! #dnd-heroforge-etc - if you'd like to see what others have done too. ✌️
i don't wanna screw up because it's been a wile since i use discord to send photos
Let us know when you do post it! I'm excited to see it
It wasn’t bad lol
Looks awesome!
thx, even thought i don't rlly draw well (although i'd like to) i do make banger character desings
So question if a character is blind how would that play out?
You would work that out with your dm
Ah ok thank you for answering that
Poorly, mechanically speaking. Being blind is a big deal in 5e.
The boring rules answer is that they'd have the Blinded condition.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Blinded
But yours is a magical world where anything can happen, so don't use the boring answer.
And yeah, the DM is the person to talk to if you want a more creative expression.
hello
I'm a new DnD DM (I've DM other games before)
I wanted to ask, If I have a party of 3 players of level 3 and I want to pitch them against 1 Rogue
What would be a fair level for the Rogue if I want it to be challenging but not unfair?'
well im not an expert on scaling but i do hope you find your awnser
Use the encounter planner on dndbeyond
Normally you'd use a monster statblock to represent any creature other than the PCs.
A monster's Challenge Rating (CR) will give you some idea of their strength.
☝️this too
In general, a monster of a given CR will present a moderate challenge to four players of an equivalent level.
e.g. a CR 3 monster would be a moderate challenge for four level 3 players.
gotcha
In your case with only three players, a single CR 3 monster would be slightly harder.
You could use the stats for a CR 3 Veteran, for example, and flavor them as a rogue by changing the way you describe their appearance, actions, etc.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17045-veteran
14 is the average result of rolling 4d6.
oh ok
☝🏻 But yeah, the Encounter Builder is a fantastic way to quickly check the difficulty.
this actually helps a ton. I works very well with what I want to do. Thank you
I'll check the encounter builder as well
Against three level 3's, for example:
It's a rough guideline, of course. Based on your specific party and the luck of the dice, it might end up easier or harder in play.
yeah, for sure
One group might be particularly well equipped against undead creatures, for example.
I've had TPK on encounters that I didn't expect before lol. All because 2 players rolled poorly twice in a row. It was ugly lol.
My party atm is a balanced party between dps, tank and support
So I think I understand everything now…? How do I join a group or something in order to start playing?

The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
So yes - sneak attack works at range.
Also
last question
one of the players at my table keeps using a bonus action with his light crossbow after attacking with a one-handed weapon and says he's allowed to do that
but I don't think so
The Crossbow Expert feat would allow that.
yeah but without featsn it's impossible right ?
(Although he’d need a free hand to reload the crossbow.)
There are other ways. A War Domain cleric could do it a limited number of times.
But yeah, it’s not something just anyone can do.
Anyone can use Two-Weapon Fighting, for comparison, but that only works with melee weapons.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
or if the crossbow somehow had a magazine removing the loading trait - I believe there is one magic crossbow weapon from an adventure that has this
It’s not the Loading property that’s the problem. It’s the Ammunition property.
But there are indeed ways around that.
Oh yeah. Somewhere that bolt has to be provided and loaded into the weapon.
FWIW, Crossbow Expert does let you ignore the Loading property.
but does it take a whole action to reload ?
Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack (you need a free hand to load a one-handed weapon)
So it's part of the attack action.
Weapon property rules are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
But they’d need a free hand and some rule that lets them make that attack as a bonus action.
You can only take a bonus action when you’ve got a feature that says you can.
Can you make your own races? In this game??!!
Cuz i have a great race concept and im pretty sure its not in the game im new btw
Yes you can, what’s your race idea ?
The answer is...sorta.
You can create any custom anything, but you have to work it out with your DM.
Ohhh ok
Creating your own rules is what’s referred to as homebrew.
But there’s also reflavoring, where you take an existing race and change not the rules, but the way you describe it.
Oh oka
The scale of things:
Some DMs do not allow some official content but most do (content produced by Wizards of the Coast)
Some DMs allow 3rd party content (content produced by publishers that are not Wizards of the Coast)
Some DMs allow homebrew content.
There’s a race called Yuan Ti that’s already a kind of snake people. Those would be pretty easy to just describe as a naga instead.
yup
And also check into 3rd party publishers, many produce races that are not in the official books. A DM may be more likely to allow a 3rd party race than a homebrew race
But, like spamandtuna said, you can reflavor a Yuan Ti to a Naga without too much trouble. Flavor isn't mechanics and most DMs don't have an issue with reflavoring something
Is there mermaids or merpeople??
as a PC race? There are Sea Elves and Tritons, I'd have to check about merpeople
Oh okay can u reflavor those into a mermaid or merman?
Possibly, depends on the DM. Merfolk tend not to have legs while Sea Elves and Tritons do
Oh alright
But starting with a Triton as a base would make the homebrewing easier.
Well i mean most mermaid concept they can transform to legs
Merfolk and naga are races in DnD in the plane shift stuff
5e monster version of Merfolk do not...they have a land speed of 10 and a swim speed of 40, no legs
but that doesn't mean a homebrew version couldn't have legs.
Right, but any DM is going to look at the monster version when determining flavor, then decide if they want to depart from that.
To make a houserule of something we (DMs) tend to look at the existing rule/creature/item/etc and then use that as a guideline.
I’d allow it as a DM, buuuuut I’m not your DM. 😅
Anyhow, ultimately it will be up to your DM, so I suggest asking them :)
and I do agree with spamandtuna, I'd allow it too. But swim speed is an ability, breathing air and water is an ability, and a swim speed of 40 is going to be an ability...meaning most (not all) of the racial abilities are tied up right there.
If I was planning a campaign that I knew wouldn’t get much time around the water, I’d recommend against it.
But at the same time, if I knew a player really wanted to be a mermaid, I’d plan a campaign around that.
Flight is almost always useful, climbing is certain to get value at some point, swimming is rarely used in most adventures.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
I have a player that is going to be a Reborn Sea Elf, but she knows she is more "Reborn" than "Sea Elf" and her swim speed may not see much use.

I’m really new to DnD and I’m using DnD beyond to create a character. On making the character there’s an ability section? How do I set that up exactly?
Abilities come from your class and background. So keep going with the character builder and it should fill those areas out based on what character class (and subclass) you took as well as which background you selected.
You can find the rules for that here. (The character builder just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, in order.)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Basically, there’s three ways to determine your ability scores. You should ask your DM which one to use for your group.
(If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d stick with Standard Array or Point Buy for now.)

how should I try to learn DnD? I´ve tried youtube stuff but it´s not too easy to grasp
Honestly the best way is to play, but pre finding a game all you really need is a rough idea of how things work and kinda how to make a PC?
so to explain where I´m at, I know what parts are needed, but I have no idea where they go, or if they are supposed to work together xd
Things like the basic rules or D&Dbeyond's character maker can help with creating a player character (PC) but generally its:
- Pick a race.
- Pick a class.
- Pick background.
And of that the bits to do are: - Put in all the abilities your class, race and background say you get.
- Pick which skills and starting gear you want.
And probably the hardest bit for new players to start is to determine stats (Use array for a test character: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 + racial modifiers). In a real game DM says how stats are made (rolled, point buy, array).
There is usually a 'quick start' guide for each class which says what stats are prioritised.
And that's that, but you probably won't know what all the numbers even do until you start playing and they click into place.
well, time to try figuring stuff out, wish me luck

@harsh fjord I've been watching tutorials on YouTube and trying to read the books etc but I am an active learner so I'm not absorbing the rules
Have you seen this event? #dnd-newcomers message
Not gonna lie I've only just downloaded discord and trying to find my way round it loo
There are good beginner guides for Discord on YouTube as well.
@harsh fjord thank you for this help
Hi, lost 👋🏻
What do you need help with?
A campaign is a story played out over multiple sessions to resolve/conclude.
What would you like to accomplish by doing so?
Ultimately, it's up to the DM if the backstory works with the tone/setting of the game you're in. If you want feedback, you should check out #character-discussion.
There are multiple settings that the game could take place in, and ultimately that is the dms choice as to where the game will take place. Some are more generic fantasy, some are more horror inspired, and some are even magitech.
Hi there noobiest of newbies here wanting to learn how to play and I have just found out the game I was preparing to join has been cancelled. Can anyone help
I'd love to play a game today
The guidelines I generally suggest for backstories are:
Don't write a novel, DMs may not want to read long backstories.
Hit three points:
- What did you do before becoming an adventurer?
- Why did you become an adventurer?
- What do you want to get out of adventuring? (ie: what are your future plans as an adventurer?)
I ask folks to stick to 1 paragraph per point or 3 paragraphs total (see the comment about reading a novel) but, that is just me. :)
But, those are just my guidelines, ask your DM what they want to see in a backstory.
So, generally speaking finding a game can take some time. Even weeks. With exceptions, D&D is not like a video game where you pick up games anytime.
With that said, I suggest reading the rules first...and to get you started:
I've been trying to learn by reading the rules but struggling to absorb it all. I'm a learn by doing not reading
I've even tried the YouTube tutorials
Ok, my suggestion is the following:
head over to #character-discussion and start getting help on making a character. That is your first step
?new the handbook helper series (I believe) has a video on spellcasting. And chapter 10 of the basic rules is all on spellcasting

Ah thanks much appreciated
hey, i’m new to dnd, and need some help making my character less boring, and also where do you get roles? Sorry for asking these are probably very commonly asked questions haha
Level 1 characters are boring, game mechanics-wise.
Go to the top of the channels, there is a section called "Channels & Roles", that is where you select roles
The roles don’t do much besides change your name color: green for players and blue for DMs.
I thought they also controlled access to some channels?
Selecting one will make a few relevant channels visible, but the role is not required to access them.
You can use that same menu to customize which channels you see.
Is there any good place for newcomers to dnd that are from EU to find groups? i have looked at the forum, but is seems like it's mostly US-based
You can look at the various Virtual Tabletops (VTTs). Many of them have looking for group methods
And even if it is US based, you may be able to find groups that match your timezone. I have a UK player in one of my groups. We meet early enough for them to play.
thanks 🙂

let's assume I am remaking the Jester from Darkest Dungeon and "porting" is skillset in DnD, obviously, i should be going as a bard, but what else do i invest in?
I would ask in #character-discussion
Bard, college of swords. Entertainer, From Bard: Athletics, Insight, Perception, Stealth From Background: Acrobatics, Performance
seems about right, thanks!
Hello
Can someone help me out i just wanna know how to start a game with friends easily i dont know the rules that much i just wanna get going
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Also check out the pinned message here in the channel.
I dont know much about dnd, i learned the rules from my brother and figured it could be fun to try to play, how should I make a character?
never even played an actual session before
I found it really easy to create characters using DnDBeyond's Character tools. That said, the first couple of chapters of the free basic rules covers building a character and you could use that and just a physical paper sheet to create a character.
Basically you pick a race, then class, and background, then roll attributes (or use standard array/point buy - check with DM and group to know which to use) and use that to start filling out your character sheet.
ok, if i do that i should probably find a group first then
Well I mean go ahead and practice building a character - just understand you may need to adjust it or create a new one to best fit with the group you're playing with.
I'm new to dnd and don't know how to play spell casters so how would I play as a cat and the owner is the patron so instead of giving the cat catnip he accidentally gave it cantrip
That concept I would definitely run by your DM and group.
But you've basically described a warlock
where's the channel where i can look for a community?
#looking-for-community is the place
thank you very much, i submitted a ticket and im hoping to get a response soon. cheers!
Hi There, I am a new beginner player looking for a beginner friendly game. I would like to ask how I could go about finding one?
Check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
Hi I’m a new player and don’t really know the rules and how to do things I really want to play so please help me out
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
here is a basic starting point: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I suggest reading the rules and creating a character to give you an idea of how that process goes.
Then you will want to find a group.
Thanks
hello
about how long should I spend on a custom background?
Custom backgrounds should be worked out with your DM.
But if you are just substituting elements from existing backgrounds that does not usually require DM input.
i meant just baseline bc i kinda spent half an hour on "lore" for a character I'm not even making for an actual session
Oh, you mean backstory, not background?
backstory mb
background is a mechanic, backstory is your character's history etc.
How much you spend on a backstory is entirely up to you, but for my groups I recommend the following:
Don't write a novel, DMs may not want to read long backstories.
Hit three points:
- What did you do before becoming an adventurer?
- Why did you become an adventurer?
- What do you want to get out of adventuring? (ie: what are your future plans as an adventurer?)
With each point being about a paragraph long.
What book has tabaxi?
Volo's Guide to Monsters (out of date) and Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse (current)
Hi :)
i have like 2.5 out of three points, with point 2 being a little odd, and its 1 really long paragraph to explain 1 and 2 and a second shorter paragrapch to explain 3
Ily
Those are just my guidelines for my players. Other DMs will have other guidelines or none at all.
I shared my guidelines to provide an example. You can use or ignore it as desired. :)
its a good set of guidelines, i might think
i like the backstory, but it may run on for a while
One of the problems with writing in general is cutting ideas down to size.
Write it all out, then start shaving it down until you are happy with it.
anyone know where newcomers can go look for a campaign to join?
well, I think if I cut off anymore I might shave off a part of the backstory that I don't want shaved, if that makes sense.
hi! i am not sure about how lenient my dm is on rules but what would my best bet be for a character that uses floating claws as a weapon/way of attacking
Flavor is free, as long as it doesn't change the mechanics most DMs won't care
For example, if you want your claws to make melee attacks at longer than 5 feet, or make ranged attacks...those would be mechanics changes
but so long as your claws are sticking to normal claw rules but 'floating', a DM probably won't care
Flavor is free *with dm approval.
It's one thing to come to your dm with an idea and work with them on it, it's another thing completely to say "Dm this is what I'm playing. Flavor is free so you can't say no"
Right :)
As for races, there are races with claws, I don't have a complete list or anything, but off the top of my head are Tabaxi and Tortles. There are more.
are weapons just given at start of game? or are they earned throughout
I'd start in #find-a-game , you can also look at various Virtual Tabletops (such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, and Owlbear Rodeo). Some of them have looking for group resources.
i’m a claws enthusiast
Do you have a copy of the rules yet?
no

Claws are natural weapons rather than manufactured. Of course you can work with a DM to make a manufactured version. Maybe a reskinned Short Sword.
hi just wanted to say hello. I'm new to D&D and this chat room. Any tips or advice would be appreciated. Thank you
im new how do you get time stop/class of transmutation
Time Stop is a 9th-level spell so you need to be at least a 17th level sorcerer or wizard.
So, I don't need Class of Transmutation but just level 17?
Any wizard can learn spells from any school.
There is no transmutation class but there is the wizard subclass of transmutation.
Hey do yall know how i can type in the find a DND tab?
If you head to #find-a-game it outlines how to use the bot
okay i was just wondering cause it says that i am not allowed to type in it
Correct. No one except for the bot can write in those channels
Hi, I have a question
When creating your character, can you make up other kind of origins?
Like, not race, but I asked to my non proffecional friends and they didnt know, could my character be a pirate, for example
Sorry for bad english btw
In theory, you can make your own anything, including backgrounds.
But you’ll need your DM’s approval first.
There are rules that explicitly allow customizing a background, though.
i don't know if i missed something in the rules but what do i need to do to post in lfg/lfp?
The instructions on how to use the bot can be found in #find-a-game
@pseudo frost ty
I’m not sure there is a generalized D&D experience. I know folks who play with their families and have a blast.
sure anyone can play just got to have a good imagination.
there isnt an imagination hea just reading it straight off of a pper
Is he new to DMing?
Hi guys! does anyone have advice for finding a new group as a new player or a dm?
since he was a kid
If you’re a player, be proactive. Don’t just post an ad and expect people to come to you; respond to posts. Whether DM or player, cast your net wide. Post in as many places as you can and try anywhere that might have clubs/groups—game stores, libraries, school.
i think he’s trying to be concise abt the rules and how it works but it feels like eating stale bread
Have you communicated your feelings sensitively?
Hey im looking to learn DND ive had many friends who have played but no one to actually teach me how.

❤️
This Discord but also check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond’s forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
im trying to communicate
idk what to say but he’s doing everything like a math teacher telling you how to solve an equation
Maybe you can find some non-professioanl D&D clips to show as an example of what you’re looking for from the game? If you’re expecting Critical Role at home, however, the issue is those unrealistic expectations.
well im definitly not expecting professional D&D games. I just want to have an authentic experience and have fun
That was directed at amoleru, actually!
ahhh my bad!
i just want to have fun but the dm’ing is kind of like
“Emrak opens the chest, and finds a scroll. Upon opening it, you see a map of the toad ahead, and see that you’re almost at your destination” goes to “You guys open the chest and find a scroll and it says you’ll be there in a mile”
i’m telling him how i feel about it because i think it’s hard for the entire party to get immersed but im hoping that changes
Did you ask the others if this is the case or just making assumptions based on you?
Thank you sm!!
my brother would constantly just look away from the game and start petting our dog because he was also bored
im trying to invest myself more so that it’s more interesting
ive brought it up and i think we’re on the same page
but my little brother needs to sleep so we called it quits for today
maybe i should try dm’ing
Maybe if you do it and give it more soul, it won't feel boring for him, it's happened to me before
Sorry for appearing out of nowhere

• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.

what does "+4 to hit" means?
4 being an example
i just don't get why it's adding another value if it already adds one, or what does that value means
+4 to hit means that's the modifier you add to your attack roll using that weapon/ability
the attack roll being a d20
So you roll that d20, add 4, then compare it to the target’s AC to see if you hit.
i know how THAT works, i wanted to know what does the value means when it says +X
Can you give a specific example, then?
i'ts an attack with a shortsword
What do you mean by “adding another value”, then?
What was being added first in this scenario?
lemme write the description
the context, is just an npc i got
"shortsword. Melee weapon attack: +4 to hit, reach 5ft. one target. hit 5(1d6+2) piercing damage"
so what exactly is the part that you're asking about?
".....+4 to hit...."
Again, that means to add 4 to the attack roll.
The +4 to hit is the amount you add after rolling the d20. That’s all.
So you roll that d20, add 4, then compare it to the target’s AC to see if you hit.
alright, alright, thank you
what more confused me is that it said "to hit" and not "to attack" or something like that
If your strength offers you a +4 to hit with a strength weapon you also have a +4 to your damage after rolls
It likely includes the proficiency bonus as well.
Yeah i just scrolled up im more informed now
A shortsword is also a finesse weapon, so it might use DEX instead of STR.
Or frankly, for a monster they might have just made up a number.
Monsters don’t always follow the same rules as PCs.

Hi Im a new player, can my cleric character use any weapon or is there a specific one recomended?
Cuz I wanted to give her a spear, but also be kind of a healer
you can use whatever you want but it would be very much recommended to use something you're proficient with (simple or martial weapon)
I’m a new player too, as well as my friends. I want to make a character. I’m going to be a drow sorcerer but don’t really know where to start
I’m making the characters right now
it changes how you might play in combat. If you want to use the spear, you might want to be more in the front, so armor would be very beneficial
I just need help with the hit die for all the stats
but you won't be locked out of healing or anything like that :)
What stat generation method are you using? There is point buy, rolling random and standard array :)
Not really positions, just melee (front) and range (not front). I guess you could say second lane is a position for people with a reach weapon (reach means you can attack someone within 10 feet instead of just 5) where you stand behind someone in melee
I think rolling random? We roll the dice and it determines our stats right? I’m unsure
Ohh ok so a wizard or cleric use spells so they would be not front, yet a handy weapon would be close to the enemy
And do we start at 10 hit points for level one?? 😭
that is random, yeah! :) for a sorcerer, you want your highest stat to be charisma, after that constitution and then dexterity. After that, it doesn't really matter
Perfect thank you
Enemie? Srry for bad english
your starting hp depend on your con modifier and class :)
yes, exactly! There are other cases, like a cleric in full armor and a weapon might prefer the front, but that is usually how it works
Enemy is correct, dw^^
Ohhh ok thank you so much!!!
no problem! Always happy to see new people in the hobby :D
How do I roll for the character stats? Which die do I use?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

you should ask your dm since there are multiple methods, but most people use the method of 4d6 drop lowest for generating stats

Hello I'm new quick question
I'm going to my local in person and club for the first time soon
Any tips?
Ping me with your replies
Bring snacks or money for snacks.
How does the attacking system work??
Or the txt version from the basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
How do I change my prepared spells? Do I do a short/long rest, or just outside of battle?
what class are you playing?
May I ask, what is the best way to find other players and a group?
I am a cleric, and we also have a wizard
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
for prepared casters (cleric, wizard, druid, etc.) you can change them on a long rest
takes time equal to one minute per spell level to study a spell
so if you wanted to prepare 3rd level daylight and 2nd level hold person, it would take 3 + 2 = 5 minutes
@mossy urchin hey can u tell me how to play this game and I'm literally new to this and i would like to play it on mobile

I downloaded d&d beyond but idk how to play
@inner thistle should i first create a character on dnd beyond?
I would read the basic rules first to get a grip on the basics of Dungeons and Dragons and then find a game to play in. You can use our looking for channels for that purpose as a DM might have some different character creation rules.
Since you're new it might help to have a DM with you when you create your character sheet the kind of help you understand certain things but by all means you can create your character sheet on your own there should be plenty of information on D&D Beyond
Is advantage on attack rolls on damage, to hit, or both?
To hit
attack rolls are to hit, damage rolls are damage
still confuses me sometimes, idk why they don’t just call them hit rolls
And 1 more question: On my character sheet on dnd beyond, on my warhammer, there is a button for damage roll that is 1d8+2 and a smaller button that is 1d10+2 damage, when do I use which one
the 1d8 is for when using it one handed and the 1d10 is for when you use it two handed as warhammers have the versatile property which gives you the choice of using them either one or two handed
and what is the daily xp budget?
you can read about it here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/building-combat-encounters#BuildingEncountersonaBudget
tldr: A budget of the ammount of XP a encounter can give during a adventuring day so you can pace your combat encounters or use the whole budget in one big encounter
Let's say we follow a blood trail, and suddently it stops. If we want to search for the dude that left the trail of blood, is it a perception or investigation check?
Depends on what the DM says but probably either or
Could be survival or investigation
I would say more so Investigation, since it's deducting what something could be.
Does anybody know the best way to get in a group?

Heyo, nice to meet yall. I am a newcomer to DnD and looking for a group with a DM who would be so kind to explain how i can create my character ^^
Welcome! There’s a good guide here on making your first character:
But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
Hello
thx, very helpfull ☺️
I recently had my first ever session and I don't really know how to incorporate my backstory into how I play my character. the ideals, personality traits etc too
You generally want to use your backstory to give your character a reason why they’re adventuring, and to ensure it’s built in a way that’ll make it work with the party.
oh yeah, I think I have that down
Honestly, your DM is the best person to have that discussion with.
Your backstory is just a starting point. The real story is what’s ahead.
I'll consult him about it. I was just mainly asking about how to make my rp convincing
I like that
So if you work with your DM, they can help tie your backstory into the game.
Personally, I like a good Swiss-cheese background: full of holes.
Just enough to explain where the character is at the start, but with lots of places for a DM to fill in the gaps.
For example, I had a wizard whose spellbook was (unknowingly) haunted by the spirit of a necromancer.
The identity of that necromancer and the means through which they came to inhabit the book wasn’t immediately relevant — so I just left it out.
And then that gives the DM a lot of leeway in how to bring that into game.
didn't beat the dark magic allegations?
That’s one possibility, sure.
The point was to leave it as a possibility.
I knew where my character’s abilities came from, and how they got started as an adventurer. And that’s all I really needed in the first game.
sounds good, I don't want to inconvenience my future dm. we're having an experiened one for the first two sessions but from there on out we have a complete newcomer
I was a little vague about how I wanted to achieve my main goal so there's no real specific way that would change or affect the story
I have a player itching to try dming, any adventure or module you’d recomend for them to run with seasoned players? (Myself as his Dm will also be playing as a player as well and assisting him where needed)
There is always the Lost Mine of Phandelver
Or Icepsire Peak or Stormwreck Isle, all designed for new DMs and players. I’ve only played in Wild Beyond the Witchlight, but I’ve been told it does a better job helping the DM than older 5e modules.
@smoky adder can i play with my frnds who far from me on my Android or pc
Of course!
Yep, online play has grown over the past few years.
How
There’s a good article here that covers some of your options:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Even on Android?
All you really need is a way to communicate with each other.
But isn't dnd beyond just a companion app
Discord best way 👍
You can definitely play on Discord, yeah.
Oh but i wanna play on Android
I tried it but i can't seem to understand it
I have only dnd beyond
Yeah roll20 is not really fit for mobile use 😅
D&D Beyond even has a Discord bot, too:
https://avrae.io/
I guess you can just roleplay through discord
In the app?
Thats another option 👍
Main problem with this one is he wants to run something I’ve not played so that I can be surprised and shocked with the storyline 😂 we’re all vet players
D&D Beyond is a digital toolset for playing D&D. You’ll need something else, like Discord, when you’re ready to play.
Well then I have no idea what you have played or not so I may not be much of help 🫡
Got both of them
Dmsguild has loads of one shots or mini campaigns for free
@smoky adder in dnd beyond how do we roll the dices or does the bot do
Just open your character sheet and click a number.
Fair I myself have played lost mines, TOA and currently call the netherdeep 😂
Hmm any you recommend?
Oh that easy nice 👍
And if you get Avrae set up, that roll will get sent to Discord, too.
There’s also Dragon of Icespire Peak, which is kind of the “sequel” to Lost Mine.
And how do we setup that?
I’ll look into that one
Stormwreck Isle is also designed for new folks.
You can invite Avrae to your server here:
http://invite.avrae.io/
Then have all your players run !tutorial beyond to get set up.
Hi I’m trying to get back into dnd. I use to play when I was in high school. The new movie got me interested again. How often are people looking for players here?

So basically all the time~
Thanks!

Good morning everyone. I joined the discord to get some guidance on how to set up a young child friendly D&D. I am only peripherally aware of D&D rules myself (always been fascinated along with my friends but never had a person passionate enough to want to commit to being a DM). My sons are 7 and 4. My 7 year old is a pretty bright kid reading and understanding things at a 4th grade level. Can't say the same about my 4 year old lol. We have been playing a hodge podge kid friendly D&D based on things I've found on web searches. Though not D&D, my 7 year old and I played gloomhaven which he got the hang of quite well it was just too gruesome for a child his age. We have tried Hero Kids, but the system was a bit too boring for the kids. We tried playing the full 5e rule set which I honestly don't know if I understood everything myself and basically got bogged down in too much detail for us to enjoy at this point. I got virtual tabletop through steam and tried to create some dungeons for them and they really enjoyed it... but it took way too long to prep and I sort of wanted them to be able to use their imagination rather than have everything visualized in front of them.
Through all these different attempts, we have tried to keep the kids' characters persistent as much as possible. My 7 year old is a ranger and 4 year old is a paladin. The difficulty I am having though is a good way to keep track of inventory, skills, progression while trying to find the right amount of complexity for the kids. I want them to be able to open treasure chests and be able to get random items that fit the ruleset we have... I would love to have some maps that they can explore. I don't mind either using digital or physical assets. I've downloaded stuff from drivethruRPG to use before. We have played through Heroes of Hesiod... but where else can I find more child friendly campaigns while maintaining a core rule set? I wonder if there's anyone else out there who have kids around my age who have found a more "dumbed down" 5e system that suits them well? I have tried going to multiple other websites for DMing with kids, but often there's a whole slew of suggestions.. and I'd just maybe like something that's been vetted by some here instead. Thank you all.
Check out the Young Adventurer’s Guide

I started my daughter at age 4. I basically asked her questions to guide her through character creation (without her knowing what I was doing).
I had her play a Celestial Warlock. The simpler spellcasting of a warlock meant she had less to focus on.
I started playing D&D when I was 10 or 11 back in the early 80s (think the first season of Stranger Things).
Perhaps use the OSR (a modernized version of Basic-Experts rules), which are even more simple than 5E. There are less classes, races, and spells.
I also gave her physical props to track her spell slots and other consumables. Cheap plastic diamonds and glass beads, for example.
Basic-Experts rules came out in the late 70s to attract new and younger players. The rules were more simple than the Advanced D&D rules at the time.
And I made some little card templates to print out and let her color them in.
But overall, having tangible things she could interact with worked pretty well.
We were pretty loosey-goosey with the rules, too, though.
O great suggestions. First time seeing that page on DnD beyond too thank you ill look through it
yeah we have tried physical character cards. We have plastic jewels, coins.
But have been going back and forth in terms of what aspects of D&D to include
I'll definitely check out OSR too. Thank you so much!
I think that you should include/flesh out aspects of DnD that they like so that they slowly can learn the real DnD mechanics on things that they like first
They like combat much? Flesh out the combat mechanics while keeping everything else pretty simple
And vice versa
yeah definitely combat
and then buying items back in town with money they collected
i let them act out their attack which they love doing, and I give them bonus points based on how cool it was... lol
bonus attack points i mean
That's fun, a lot of DMs give extra brownie points like that
now that you mention it, i think that provides me with some clarity. they dont really care much about all the intricate stats that go into the actual combat
they just like rolling that d20, the damage dice and acting em out
and discovering treasures lol
Who doesn't haha
What are you calling "attack points?"
oh, just a separate roll for damage if their d20 roll lands a successful attack
How are they doing with spells? both ranger and paladin have access to them
Hello
Yeah that's where I need help. Used so many different systems, and I have them so many different spells. A lot o them were just kind of made up and I didn't limit them to what were actually available to the character classes
other than paladin being able to heal for example
If I were to go with OSR for example, is there a compendium of spells/items that would fit that ruleset I can access/buy?
i guess this is where the books from young adventuerer's guide may come in handy
The OSR (Old School Renaissance/Revival) is the generic name of the modern update to the Basic/Expert rules from the late 70s.
I mentioned it earlier because the Basic/Expert rules were essentially created to help attract new and younger players (at the time) with a simpler ruleset than the Advanced D&D rules. Basic/Expert had less races, classes, and spells.
I have a question.
Yep I'm reading into it right now. Seems perfect
I’m still semi new to dnd and would love to know which books to get for dnd and what you guys recommend.
PHB is always a good start
Necrotic Gnome publishes their own OSR called OSE (Old School Essentials) and they have a free SRD document you can look at (think of it like a video game demo).
