Okay I am in the channel I belong in now!
Welcome
Ty
Here are those resources I was telling you about
Ye I'm reading about races rn on that rules link
Does pickingg a race automatically tie your personality to that race's cultrual beliefs or whatever? Like a race that despises messing with corpses or holy grounds making you unable to grave rob or steal from a church?
Not necessarily.
Nope!
While you can choose to follow their culture and beliefs strictly, you are your own person. Nothing dictates how you must play your character
Though it is considered good form to make a character that will work with the rest of the party
But I should most likely assume an NPC of a certain culture/race, like a mercenary for hire, would really hate me if I flagrantly ignored or disrespected those values
Idk if these is a race like that in DnD that really values the dead/religous figures
Should I replace the magic missile spell with scorching ray?
Ultimately it's up to the DM whether those sorts of things are true.
Hmm I see
Would I ask the DM if those things are true or what I have to prace that out in universe?
Nope. Those are just guidelines and don't speak for individuals
Ask. Communication makes the game go well.
So that'd also mean a DM can decide how strong or weak your Race is? I wanted to play a Dragonkin character but heard that's a subpar starting race
Or dragonbron rather?
They decide on lore and, to some extent, mechanics. These are the conversations that should happen before the game gets underway.
It depends, Magic Missile does 3 1d4 attakcs that automatically hit, which can be useful depending on the target or to hinder concentration on a caster
When playing d&d 5e, it is expected that they follow the mechanical rules for the races. The "flavor" of those races is going to dependant on setting and hiw the dm runs their games
So they can't "Buff," or nerf," persay
And Scorching ray does considerably more damage but does have a chance simply not to hit depending on the enemy
Well what's your recommendation?
Personally i'd take magic missile
How many skills or traits let you discern intention?
Like if an NPC feels malice towards you or something vauge?
the trait of calling cap
or the bs meter (comes from growing up around many siblings)
I would say thats insight
Is that the same thing creatures have, who can sense when you have violent intentions or the intend to harm?
Kinda like an emapthic ability ig
like the ability to sense intent to kill/malicious intent/fighting spirit which has been played out in every form of media
Like what a Pseudodragon has
I would say that all falls under insight. But there are also spells like animal friendship
Is the example I'm thinking of
What do you mean?
I mean insight is more about discerning body language or verbal pattern to recognize if someone's lying, or overall discerning someone's posture to see if they're about to attack you, but in that can it could also be Preception
Idk I was watching a video on different kinds of dragons, and a Pseudodragon can sense the gernal emotions of your thoughts or intentions and avoids people who are jerks
I believe that'd be insight then since its a judge of characteristics
Insight
Your Wisdom (Insight) check decides whether you can determine the true intentions of a creature, such as when searching out a lie or predicting someone’s next move. Doing so involves gleaning clues from body language, speech habits, and changes in mannerisms.
Found here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
But that seems moreso like (Inuniverse at least) that derives moreso from actual clues or info given off by an enviroment or person. I'm thinking moreso of an ability that lets you discern someone's "Aura," (for lack of a better term).
I think what I'm asking for is too game breaking in hindsight
You mean like the spell detect good and evil?
That'd just be an ability that the Pseudodragon has at that point, i think so at least
Judging by the wiki description no. Sorry I'm not being helpful about this
First issue is that you are using a wiki. The pseudodragon is in the basic rules
Oh it just has limited telepathy
Ig that's the same thing functionally from what I'm thinking of
I've decided for my first game I'm gonna try my damndest to get a Psudodragon pet. Sounds super useful
Yeah. That's why I always suggest looking at the rules as some wikis (depending on what ones you are looking at) are either just wrong or trying to consolidate almost 50 years of lore across various editions into one
Ig only as broken as a Dm allows
That poison stinger is definetly useful, judt seems like a cool pet to have
Nah I want him for his telepathy mostly
I believe you can get one as a familiar by being a warlock
I'd be talking to some suspicious person, and I'd ask my dragon "Whatda'ya think of him, Sparky?" And he'd snarl 'cause the dude's leading me into a trap or just has general malicious intentions
Yup. If you go with a pact of the chain warlock, you can get a pseudodragon as a familiar
That's honestly all 100% dm dependant
I think the thelepathy is mostly specific to communication unless im wrong
Oh. Well I think that's at least a resonable use of a pseudodragon to try right?
Not super crazy. Still very vauge
Ask your dm
It certainly is, would be a cool character trait for it, that is if the dm allows it
Hey me and my frnds started our first dnd session we doing the death house how can i make it better exp for me and them too
If you are dming, I would either bring it up in #dm-discussion or #1029833015423143957
Actually I wouldn't be able to keep my pseudodragon with me 'cause he'd likely die to a big AOE towards the mid game right
Are familiar versions of creatures identical in ability to a wild one?
hey i’m new to dnd never played before and just want to play a one shot to ease my way in to it
?looking these are the channels we have to help you search for games
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
We have four different game channels to help you find a game.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared experience.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted, either in the thread attached to that post or by sending a direct message to the poster. To post an ad of your own, follow these simple steps:
- Head to #1075498333705089084.
- Type
/looking-forinto the new message bar. - A list of choices will appear. Select the channel you want and press
enter. - Fill out the private form that appears. No one else can see this form until you submit it, at which point it will be posted to the appropriate channel.
Users can post only once per channel every seven days. After that time, your existing post will be automatically removed and you’re free to post again.
In the meantime I would look over the rules for the type of character you want to play
i have a character but no people to play with
Then go ahead and utilize these channels
thanks
Does anybody know where I can join a beginners campaign
If you look up here, these are the channels we have to help you find games. While many of the games here don't explicitly say they are beginner friendly, many of them are. Just be honest and upfront
So the answer to basically any “Will this idea work?” Is “Ask your dm?”
If it is outside the defined rules, yes
Gotcha. That’ll cut out a lot of filler from me
Are you a mod
Mods are clearly marked by the color of their name. What does this have anything to do with the comment I made about the rules of this game?
I am a mod. Is there a question here that needs a moderators attention?
No i was just asking
Also in the future use the "Alert Mod" action or ask for a private thread in #moderator-support.
Okay well that doesn't seem germane to the channel?
We're should I ask him if he's a mod then what channel is for that
Well you can tell if they are mod by looking at their username color (mods are orange) and roles (I clearly have a moderator role).
OK then
Are familiar versions of creatures identical to the wild variety?
Like if I summon a pseudodragon?
Compared to having a pet one?
The familiar has an added trait
Hi! So ive never been able to play DnD before but i really want to. I know bare minimum and have alot of material but it gets overwhelming trying to do everything on my own. I need some assistance from someone whos willing to answer alot of questions from an autistic teen. 😅
Do you have a copy of the rules yet?
I have a digital version of Basic Rules.
Awesome! That's always a great first step
I can make a list of all the books and stuff i have. Ive tried reading through them. But i get lost. Alot of them were gifted by people who know less than i do about DnD
One great resource to help break down the basic rules/PHB is going to be the handbook helper series on youtube (there's a link in the pinned posts of this channel)
As far as getting started without overwhelming yourself, I would stick to the rules for the type of character you want to make
So just Basic Rules and Essentials Kit?
If I had to pick just one, I'd say the Basic Rules
Essentials is like a pared down version of Basic Rules.
The essentials kit rulebook has even less than the basic rules
ooohh, ok.
Honestly, if you’re finding the Basic Rules overwhelming, then maybe the essentials kit actually is a better starting place.
Did you have any specific questions about the rules, though?
All im seeing are character basics, ability scores, adventure stuff, combat, etc. I dont see actual rules. I guess because im looking for the word rules??
Ah okay! So lets start with going over the various dice rolls.
An attack roll is a D20 (20 sided dice) plus the character bonuses and modifiers. Bonuses would be like something like a magical weapon adding +1 to attack rolls and damage rolls. Modifiers would be bonuses coming from the primary ability used to make the attack (strength for melee weapons and dexterity for ranged weapons).
So let's say you had a human fighter with a 16 in their strength ability. This gives them a +3 strength modifier. To make a +1 longsword attack, the player would roll a D20, add their modifiers (+3) + proficiency (+1 for level 1) + bonus (+1 for magical sword). Let's say they roll a 13 on the die. 13+3+1+1 = 18.
If this number is higher than the enemy's Armor Class (AC) it is a hit.
Once they hit, the damage dice can be rolled.
For a longsword this is a D8 (single handed) or D10 (two-handed).
Again they roll the damage dice, add any bonuses and modifiers, and the resulting number is how much damage is done to the target.
Then you have skill checks - let's say your fighter needs to jump a ravine. The DM may ask you to make a strength athletics check. You would roll your d20 and add your modifiers and any bonuses again and report that to the DM. If that beats the DM's Difficulty Challenge (DC) threshold, your character makes the jump.
You also have saving throws - let's say an enemy wizard casts fireball at your fighter. The DM asks you to make a dexterity saving throw. You roll a D20 and add your saving throw modifiers and bonuses.. If it beats the spellcaster's save DC, you only take half damage.
That covers most of the dice rolling mechanics you'll use.
In the case of performing an attack, does the creature you attack have a chance to roll a dodge or block check?
In most instances, no.
That's what the roll to hit signifies
Usually no as the armor class would represent any abilities to avoid damage, including armor and dodging ability.
Ah I see
Can you "Super Fail," rolls? For example I read in the rules about Pseudodragons that when stung, you have to roll to resist getting poisoned, but if you roll really bad you fall unconscious
Does everything have a super fail roll?
Critical fumbles are an optional ruling.
This got confusing.
You can always ask your DM stuff. It isn't really expceted that you remember all the minute details of the rules
But you should know the basic mechanics of the game!
Yeah you don't have to memorize all this - just have a general feel for it.
Perhaps running through this interactive adventure may help? https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Alright. Thank you!
Hi I am from new here I need some help
What did you need help with
im the same as him and just wondering how would i get started in dnd
Alright. So i finished the Interactive story thing from the link. It was insightful. However, i need to know how to make a character properly. The book got a bit confusing.
From what I understand you start by picking a race, than a class. So you can do some research about possible combinations that seem most interesting for you and then go from there
I understand that. Its the numbers that are confusing.
Well once you pick both of those the numbers get more streamlined
Erm alright.
But wait for someone who's a bit more knowledgeable about this to answer. I'm basically in the same boat as you.
Which numbers are confusing you?
Would the answer "all" be realistic??...
Yes.
then all
Have you set up your ability scores?
Hit up the pins homie
Do you have a number listed next to each attribute?
?new here are some resources to help you get started

thx
The numbers that are supposed to go in the little bubbles on the left side of the page, right?
If so then yes.
Yep. Have you picked a race or class yet?
Yes.
Which ones?
Sorcerer and i wanted to go Elf but im not sure which one.
For a Sorcerer, I would recommend picking a subrace that gives a bonus to Charisma. Dark Elf is the only one that does so in the Players Handbook, but there are a couple more if other source books are available
Hi, I am new to dnd, what is a good newbie class and what race is best for it?
I remember really liking the Dark elf and i think Moon elf?
Fighter and Barbarian are probably the simplest classes, but IMO you should pick a class that you think is cool
Alright Paladin it is
Honestly, the way 5e is designed there are no bad race/class combos
Yeah, just pick whatever you think sounds interesting.
Moon elf is a sub-sub race of High Elf iirc. It can definitely work, but if you want to change the stat bonuses you should check with your DM
Once you have your race finalised, you should choose which skill proficiencies you want. After that, go through the list of spells available to your class and pick which ones you want. After that, you can choose equipment and work on backstory and personality
I dont have a Dm. Ive never played before. I just want to know what to do so i dont look like a fool when i finally do find a group to play with.

What can a party with incapacitated members do?
hi newbie here and i was wondering wth is the letters with numbers after them
Do you have a specific example?
do you mean d20, d10, d8 etc? That means 20 sided dice, 10 sided dice, 8 sided dice etc.
Probably depends on why they’re incapacitated.
ohhhh d means dice thank u so much
y would u use dif ones tho
D4 to D12 is for damage, bigger dice for bigger chance of damage
D20 is used for almost everything else, your chances of success depends how high you roll
That’s explained here in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
thank u both of ye

I think I know what kinda character I wanna be
Now I'm extra motivation to get through these rules and make my PC a reality
Oh?
I wanna be a really righteous Paladin that used to be a really dastardly/desperate rogue but was saved by a philanthropic covenant, and decided to replay that kindness with devout fervor. What greater show of faith is there than that which has been tested? I'd be more sympathetic to the plights of people of struggling or immoral backgrounds (Much to the contempt of my more dogmatic superiors) and have thus set off on adventure to reconcile the core beliefs of the covenant that save me that fateful day with the corruption I see it has now and how it clashes with my own life experiences.
As a result I'd have a few rougue like tricks up my sleeve that I'd (reluctantly) have at my disposal. But maybe that's too jack of all trades
Simple stuff like knowing how to pick pockets or lockpick
Sounds like the criminal background would be perfect
Or (in addition/supported by my paladin given charisma) know how to talk with criminals
Oh I didn't even knw that was a thing!
Would it be too much to have a few rogue-like skills?
Or just up to the DM ig
Talk to the DM but usually you'll just have your standard class skills but your background may give you proficiency in say thieves tools.
for rolling stats what dice would i roll?
Four d6, and drop the lowest die.
thank you
Would it be a bad idea to put in dexterity points in my character?
Which class?
For a paladin, they really want strength and charisma
Paladins' primary ability score is Charisma. Since they're primarily a melee martial class Strength and Constitution would be next
I see
I kinda wanna be a dragonkin but that seems too exotic as a starting race right? Is that a common race for people to be?
Or dragonborn, etc. All sound the same
It is common!
I could make it fit if the covenant I turned to worshipped Bahamut or something
Depends on the setting and what your dm is using
Local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a weekend filled with D&D fun, and you can join in! The first of three this year, this event includes a learn-to-play 30-minute demo entitled Voyage to Stormwreck Isle for new players, and the 4th-level adventure Prisoner 13 from the anthology Keys from the Golden Vault.
The event takes place April 7-9. Contact your local Wizards Play Network game store to check times and table availability. If you're a longtime player, ask your store if they need Dungeon Masters!
Find your store at the Store and Event Locator. Select “D&D Events” and enter your location to get started!

How long would it take to cast detect magic as a ritual?
Ten minutes
Thank you
Do they do end sessions on here?
End sessions?

I started like yesterday and it seems like fun
Do you have a copy of the rules?

I heard of this from someplace and was instantly curious
My friends, however? They don’t quite share the same interest
How do I learn basic rules, etc.? Anything I need to buy?

Being brand new to this world this is helpful
In what context?
a necromancer revives them from a battlefield after a long time
Hi! I have a super basic question about leveling up and ASI. At level 4, classes get an ASI and can raise their attributes. Does the race (and the racial ASI) play any roll in that or not?
For example the halfling has an ASI auf +2 Dex. Does he get +2 Dex at level 4 as well or is he free to choose? And what happens to the none-variant human, who has an ASI of +1 to every stat? Does he get another +1 to every stat at level 4?
Or are both free to put there attribute improvements wherever the like, regardless of their race?
ASI ?
Ability Score Improvement.
The thing that is mentioned under the race traits in the players handbook
Racial traits only apply at level 1
so the none-variant human IS actually really bad?
So for a basic human, he would get +1 in every stat at the character creation
I made a non variant human fighter and he's cool
Also you can replace the ASI by a feat if you play with the Feats rule
I'd say it kinda compensates the lack of stats of a character
But you do you
thanks!
Think about what Type of Equipment they Had in live. Describe it as rusted.
Do a -1 AC for Armor and shields, -1 to Hit and dmg for weapons
yeah but the armor are not as good as they were
I imagine there are only scraps of it left
Yes thats why you do -1 to the AC value.
can you give me an example of armor I could take as an model ?
out of the three paid rule books, what are most recomended for newer players?
PHB I guess
For footsoldies probably scale Mail (AC 16, so rusted AC 15) or studded leather (AC 12+ dex of the skeleton, AC 11+dex If rotten) then maybe Captains with half Plates (AC 15+dex/ max 2, so rusted AC 14 + dex of max 2) maybe If it is multiple Fights, the "Boss" has a Plate Armor (AC 18, so 17 If rotten)
For Players, honestly only the PHB If any. But often DMs have content they bought in D&D beyond or roll20 that they can share with Players.
So i recommend looking for a group First and Play a Bit before you buy anything.
If you Need more advice in DM related stuff you should ask in #dm-discussion or you can feel free to PM me If you want
Thank you
i havent met a single person in my country into dnd

A general idea of the game mechanics, an understanding of how your character works, dice, character sheet, and a willingness to learn and have fun. Check the pins for some useful links to help get you started.

I just ordered the dnd starter set off Amazon , comes tomorrow yay
Ooh nice! I've had that one laying around for so long
Never got to actually play irl with it
I came to ask if anyone knows of any one shot campaigns that are good to start off with dm'ing, I'm still far from even being able to dm a game, but I wanted to look into it. I do have some experience as a player. It can be homebrew or otherwise
Dmsguild has a lot of free and pay what you want one shots on there. One of my favorites for new players is A Most Potent Brew on there
Thank you! ^-^
Does anyone know how to join groups for games?
#find-a-game has some advice there.
Aight thx man
Question
Can I use combat skills or whatever for utility or is that entirely DM dependant?
For example, using the breath of my Dragonborn PC to heat up some food to cook?
I wouldnt use it to heat up food but to start a cooking fire go for it
Okay cool, Would that put my breath attack on cooldown until I get a short rest?
Yep.
You can likely do something like that, but do check with the DM. That said, D&D is about the timely use of resources, so it's worth being careful about expending them on minor things. Of course, no one can tell you how to play, so this is just food for thought.
Helloo. Nice meeting you.
I'm very fresh into dnd, and I was wondering if there are any onetimers available soon? I got a character sheet prepared as well

Quick question, does entangle affect PC's in your party, or only enemies?
It just says “a creature”, so that’s any creature: friendly, hostile, or otherwise.
guys i wanna make a domestic terrorist cat but i have no idea how to make one/how to make it have sense. help me
The best way would be to talk to your DM and group. ✌️
It might need some homebrew things and/or just general thumbs-up from the group to work.
That doesnt really answer my question
Druid that is always in wind shape as a cat but is also a fire genasi who despises the “green” (nature) and would prefer a world on fire
and cant speak common and has high charisma cuz he cat?
tbh this is litteraly the best response i could get
should make it right away
Yw
Talk to your DM because they may not allow a playable cat.
he already said its okay.
I mean if it’s a Druid in wildshape
Then talk to your DM on how to create it.
You said cat.

you mean reckless attack?

One message removed from a suspended account.
generally, reckless attack is best used when you are still healthy. it loses value vs easy to hit enemies and gains value vs hard to hit enemies.
its riskier when you are surrounded and less risky when you only fight 1 or 2 enemies
reckless also should be used whenever enemies already have advantage anyway

Hello, i just got here. Me and a couple of friends are planning on running a campaign in the next few months, and we're DMing on rotation. I'm fairly confident as a player, but this will be my first time as a DM. Is there anything i should know going into this? Any advice, tips?
Ask questions / advice in #dm-discussion
Oh, right. Sorry, thank you
It'll increase when (if) you get magic items (for example, a +1 axe grants an additional +1 to your to-hit roll and to your damage roll) and also when your stats increase at certain levels (when you gain an Ability Score Increase or a Feat), which can include the relevant stat for your to-hit roll.
"Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d12 (or 7) + your Constitution modifier per barbarian level after 1st"
What does the last part mean ? Would i get at lvl 5: 7+5*CON ?
You can either roll 1d12 or take the average (which is 7), then add your CON modifier to whatever number (either the roll or the 7).
Each class gets max HP according to their HP dice for level 1.
Ok so the "per level after first" refers to me rolling for the level up. I thought it might multiply
You add it once for each level.
Yeah, it's a per-level thing.
So your total CON bonus is CON * level.
So at level 5 with 16 Con i get 3*5 ? so my 7+15 ?
You'd start with 12 + CON at level one, then 7 + CON for each of the next four levels.
So 40 + 5*CON total.
Thanks 🙂
Hey, my friend has made a homebrew spell in dndbeyond and is trying to add it to his character on the same site, but the spell doesnt show up in his spell list. Anyone know the solution to this?
Does he have Homebrew Content enabled for that character?
pff no he didnt aha i just figured it out after trying for 15 minutes
sorry! xD we got it, thank you.
Problems always solve themselves as soon as you give up and ask for help. 😅
hello im kind of new to this
Welcome!
hi
I have a question, I'm joining a new session as a High Elf Storm Cleric taking the place of an NPC that was in the party, but since no character sheet existed, I made one for the character. The problem is my Armor Class reaches 22 when I use my shield and mace, and I was wondering if I should nerf my charecter as I think an AC of 22 at lvl 1 is a little bit overpowered.
How did you get 22, exactly?
Yeah, I don't see how you got a 22 at level 1, unless you are counting a spell or two?
I have never heard of someone having a AC of 22 at level 1
Chainmail (16) Dex mod (2) Shield (2) Special DM interpretation of elves being made of natural materials (Long story short my chareter is made of Rose Quartz) (2)
I did not decide that last part
dm said +2 ac
You can start with Chain Mail (AC 16), Shield (+2), a Fighting Style (+1), and Warforged or other ability to add another +1 to get an AC of 20, then Shield of Faith will pop it to 22
Heavy armor does not include your Dexterity modifier.
Yes, which is still high, but not unheard of.
Ok that makes a bit more sense
But yeah, if your DM said 18 isn't high enough, don't argue.
Starting with an AC of 18 or 19 is pretty typical for some classes.
I still think its funny that mobs have to have at least 10 dex
Hey, pls ignore this message till you guys are done texting. I m new to dnd and i just wanna ask if the guidebooks and stuff are available as a buyable text document or something as well. I dont have much space so i would rather have a digital copy. Just wanna make sure to not buy some pirated stuff. I hope i didnt violate any rules with this message...
I suggest starting with the free basic rules if you haven't already: https://dnd.wizards.com/what-is-dnd/basic-rules
As for digital rules, generally Wizards of the Coast does not publish their rules in PDF format. You can purchase them via DnD Beyond or some Virtual Tabletops (like Roll20) though, but they are part of the platform you purchase them on, not downloadable PDFs.
Thanks, that helps a lot! I cant wait to get started 👍
lol sry to the mod haha
And the proof was just provided by the Mods :)
SRD?
SRD: System Reference Document, the document that contains the free aspects of the game system.
Sorry, I meant is the SRD a valid resource for someone in their position?
And has now been released to the Creative Commons (CC), making it more free.
Yes, the SRD is a valid resource. I believe WotC does have a copy of the SRD somewhere for reading.
Oh for sure.
Faster than the googles
But really, the SRD is part of the free rules on DnD Beyond (and VTTs such as Roll20)
I’d suggest the Basic Rules on D&D Beyond instead. It’s a lot more user-friendly than the PDF.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
the original user, Gabriel, asking the question wanted a PDF version over the DnD Beyond version.
Is it? I have not bothered to read the basic rules tbh just the starter set rulebooks
And the big books.
Starter Set is a boiled down version of the rules meant for new people.
Ahh ok. Makes good sense to start there then. Check the SRD if basic rules tickle your fancy. Buy the PHB if the SRD has more of what you're looking for...
The SRD is not a document designed for playing the game. It's a reference document (hence the name) intended for designing content for the game. If you want to learn the rules, the Basic Rules is the most suitable document. The D&D Beyond Basic Rules includes the most information
Why is the PHB so expensive
That's not a question suitable for this channel
Thanks for the link and everything else! I guess i have a lot of reading to do. Have a great night/day everyone
We can't comment on the price of any given book in your region or area, or how it relates to your own personal budget

hey I just got done making a character and I have to ask is having a +7 in strength checks and +9 in strength saving throws a bit unfair for a level 1?
You can run your character idea by #character-discussion for feedback. As to "unfair", everything depends on context. I will say be careful of "main character" syndrome where your character outshines the rest of the party. It can lead to bad feelings among the players.
ok
If you are the 'strongperson' of the group, doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Some folks are strong, some are dexterous, some are intelligent, some are wise. It really depends on the overall build and what you are trying to achieve.
And sometimes the dice are just that kind. Although how did you get +9 in strength saves at level 1? (5+2 = 7)
I have no idea how I got the +9 but yea he is meant to be the barbarian of the the group having a really high strength stat
I would look at how you got that, because without a special ability giving you an extra +2 to strength saves it should cap at +7 at level 1. Assuming a 20 strength.
Is your strength a 20?
did you give yourself any magic items?
ah now I see the problem I had my strength at 25
Maximum is 20, without certain magic items that exceed normal limits (which you wouldn't usually have at level 1)
yea im still pretty new to this
Do you have a DM yet?
so normally, you dont start with any magic items
just your starting gear from background and class, or gold buy for mundane items if your DM likes that better
no I don't
In that case, I would not roll your ability scores. Many DMs require you roll where they can see the rolls. Or they use Point Buy or Standard Array.
If you roll your ability scores without a DM you may get disappointed when the DM throws them out.
I suggest using Point Buy until you have a DM, then use the method they specify.
Reasons:
Standard array is easy to switch to
Rolling is for when the DM says to roll.
Point Buy takes the most time, so is the one that should be set up in advance.
okay but even so I still have no idea how to even get a play through going I just made a character
After you make your character your next step is to find a group/DM.
There are the looking for channels here, or you can look for games in your local gamestore if you want an in-person game.
Or you can look at various Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, and Owlbear Rodeo. Many of them have looking for group resources.
okay so should I go to one of sites you just talked about?
Up to you, what method of playing do you want to do?
Online with a VTT?
Online without a VTT?
In-Person?
What I will say is this:
Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo (possibly others) are free (or free for most players in the case of Roll20), playing in-person is free.
Playing without a VTT is usually free too.
It just depends on if you want to see a map with miniatures/tokens or if you want to do it based on your imagination (called theater of mind)
im having a bit of trouble navigating roll20
You want #third-party-tools-archive in that case
ok

Oh thanks
does anyone recommend any game sets to play with other friends/family?
That's kind of a broad question. If it's a group of newbies, any of the starter adventures—Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak, or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle—would work well, as they're designed for new players and DMs. They can be a bit of a commitment, though.
thats what im looking for just a simple one to start with
You might want a one-shot, then? Those are supposed to take a single session of play, somewhere between 2 to 4 or 5 hours. I like Winghorn Press's "A Most Potent Brew" since it's for level 1 characters, but they have multiple options on their site. The Delian Tomb is also a good choice.
yes thank you
Hello! Ima new to this server and would like to learn dnd and how to be a dm for homebrew content ect like abilities and how there marked, I know some dnd like some (not many) dice rolls and I'd like to understand more before I enter a campaign with friends!
Oh I see lol
But how do you dm? How can you make 5 hour sessions and not run out of content? Do you make stuff up and make it fur so anything you've created able to come into the game incase a player does a different thing then the plan?
I use pre-existing adventures and then add my own tweaks and customizations. Saves time. My sessions typically run 3-4 hours at most. Usually you set the expectations for the game with the players before even playing - so players buy into following the general path of the adventure. That said it can be fun to improvise and explore the different paths player choices can create (within reason).
I wish to make a one piece dnd similar to rustages
Feel free to be inspired by anything/everything for your game - but it's probably best to start with a pre-written adventure to get a feel for the general balance and flow of an adventure.
I don't really know anything pre written but I can look after I learn how to play
Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on DnDBeyond - it's an adventure specifically designed for new players and DMs.
Ah I see I will use and study that after I learn from another person because I lose attention from books a lot because of ADD so after I find someone to teach me I can study that

What’re some pitfalls to avoid when creating a character as a new player?
Being great at everything and running a character with “main character” syndrome (stealing the spotlight and outperforming everyone else’s characters)
You should make a character that works well with the rest of the party and fits well within the adventure being played.
i’m totally new, just coming to ask if there’s like a mechanic class? I wanna fight with robots, if not i can prolly get some help from my dm to create a beastmaster but with robots
It should also be a character that doesn’t have a ton of experience or whatever since it wouldn’t make sense for them to be lvl 1
Unless they had an accident that weakened them or trauma that made them disregard they’re original skills or class
That falls under "fits well within the adventure being played"
Oh
What do you guys think about that trope? “I used to be an ‘X’ kind of fighter but due to circumstances switched to this more unfamiliar/less mastered style?”
More of a question for #dnd-discussion
Or #character-discussion, depending on what specifically you're asking
Oh I’ll ask there too

A question about proficiencies : So if I roll let's say a medecine check, and have a +3 modifer, that would mean that I add +3 to my roll right? And if I'm proficient in that skill then it would be +6?
You roll a d20 and then add the results with your ability score modifier.
If you are proficient in that skill you add your Proficiency Bonus modifier to it as well.
Your proficiency depends on your level, so it'd be +2 at level 1.
Have read the Basic Rules yet?
Each class has a chart in its description detailing what abilities you get and what your proficiency bonus is at what levels.
If you are proficient in a skill or a weapon, you add your Proficiency Bonus to it. Your Proficiency Bonus goes up about every 4 or 5 levels:

oh damn I'm blind it's in a big font on the character sheet
Hi Guys. for the character sheet, what should the saving throws add up to? Like what number? As well as skills. Whats to stop me from adding highest number to each skill?
Your ability score modifier and your proficiency bonus, when applicable. Do you know the rules?
no completely no. I made a character on dnd beyond and it has recorded numbers alr. Do i keep those the same?

D&D Beyond does all the calculations under the hood for you. You don't need touch those numbers

☝🏻 Yeah, it was getting shared so much that I snuck that in a few weeks ago.
My vote was for dungeon dudes guides
Sorry guys last question for the night. In the character sheet, theres an add items portion. is there a limit to what I can add?
wait
it corresponds to gp
which I have none lol
You’ll generally start with what your level 1 class and background give you.
Class tends to give equipment, and background tends to give gold.
Anything outside of that would be up to your DM, and sometimes they’ll even modify the starting equipment and gold.
Got it
The class and background you choose will each include a list of things you start with
Hey, I've only played d&d a couple times and want to get a group of friends together to play with G's dad as our DM (we're in highschool & he has more experience with d&d) but I'm not sure how to ask him since I don't know him that well. Any advice?
Just have your friend leave a Player's Handbook out in the open as bait.
The dad'll see it and volunteer.
Ask your buddy to ask their dad. The worse that can happen is he'll say no.
I know that's what makes the most sense but part of me just feels really awkward about it idk why
Just pretend you're roleplaying your character who has talk to noble for some important quest to pertake. This can help you build up your confidence (D&D helped me break out of my introverted shell)
Hey y’all, anyone here have experience making character sheets?
Thanks talking it out helps a bit 🙂
What do you need help with specifically?
In D&D beyond? Or just like a regular sheet
The paper sheet
Okay so 1, if I’m a half-drow do I get any characteristics from the drow race? Or only the half elf stats
Half-elf
Also if it’s not asking too much if there’s any good videos explaining the combat system, I have an idea of it but it gets confusing
Thank you!
Check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
The key part is here:
A half-elf of drow descent can forgo Skill Versatility and instead choose the drow’s Drow Magic:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/20-half-elf#DrowHalfElf
Mechanically, you're a half-elf who has Drow Magic instead of Skill Versatility.
The only things I don’t have filled out on my character sheet are my personality traits, ideals bonds and flaws, initiative and armor class, inspiration, saving throw numbers and skill numbers(which idk how to get) attacks and spell casting equipment and current hp
Would a picture of it help?
Have you gone through the step-by-step character creation guide?
You don't start off with any Inspiration. The DM awards you with Inspiration during play.
I was watching wasd20’s video but he skips through rules and details sometimes which makes it a bit difficult
If you're not averse to reading: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Check the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos linked above.
Thank you guys!
One last question before I go, do I have to pick drow magic? I’ve heard magic for beginners is a bit difficult, I have a rogue halfelf build
It says can, which means you don't have to.
Depends if you have access to the source book (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) that has the drow half-elf variant
I do not, thank you!
Ask your DM to see if they have it. Often DMs provide source books for their players to borrow.
If you're cool reading spells, magic isn't too tough for beginners. I got put off playing a wizard at first, but as you level you learn.
Might run out of spell slots fast, early, and be down to cantrips which feels weaker. But that's the life of a young caster.
so completely new to the game i bought the players hand book. been reading through it. was wondering what other resources i need as a player. thanks
Dice, character sheet.
ahh i have dice forgot to mention that.
There are digital dice roller apps. Worse comes to worse you can use Google
If you're a player, there's not much else you need. Y'know, beyond a knowledge of the rules and a group to play with.
Hey all, im new to dnd and have a few questions. Me and my friends live quite a distance apart, so meeting up for dnd isnt possible, I know people play on tabletop simulator however I dont entirely understand how. If possible can someone explain how that will work, basically will I need a book and die and all that stuff even if the die and calculator are in game? Also what would be a good workshop mod for the dnd playthrough. Finally, are there any online dnd games apart from table top? Like i said, new to dnd but very interested. thanks!

There are other virtual tabletops (VTTs), such as owlbear.rodeo (free) and Roll20 (freeium). There are paid VTTs like FoundryVTT, FantasyGrounds and Tabletop Simulator.
I recommend setting up your own private Discord server for text and voice communication.
D&D Beyond has free accounts you can create character sheets (and the DM can look at the players' sheets).
gotcha, thank you all very much!
Oh yeah, if you want to pick the regular half-elf race and just say you’re part drow, most DMs would probably be fine with it.
But your DM would be the best person to ask.
Okay so I’m a rogue half drow with a charlatan background, do I get the gear from the rogue page, charlatan page, or both?
You either take the gold option, or you get your class's starting equipment and the gear from your background.
Ie: both (or the gold option)
Also I’ve seen videos where people roll for initiative, does it change every campaign or is it something that’s established with the character
Initiative is rolled at the beginning of every combat
So leave it blank?
It only applies during that combat
No, the box is your bonus you add to the roll.
it is usually your Dexterity bonus
Oh so I’d just put 3 in the box(my dexterity bonus)
DM calls for initiative rolls, you roll, add the bonus. DM will then put the names of the players and NPCs in the order of their rolls.
Also…what’s the gold option? I’m assuming that’s the charlatan option
No that is not the charlatan option
I see, thank you for clearing that up!
Every class can select either the starting equipment OR a random amount of gold. For Rogues that is 4d4x10 gold.
Take the starting equipment unless you have a good reason for the gold option
A good reason would be: none of the starting equipment options match your the gear you want for your character and you feel you can buy it instead via the gold option.
Okay I must’ve skipped over that, thank you! And just to clarify I get the gear from the rogue class and charlatan background?
correct, background gear is part of the starting gear
gold OR starting gear (including background gear)
Coolio, thank you! I’m almost ready to look for a game B)
background gear usually includes a small amount of gold

How do I figure out my attack bonus on my weapons?
Also I’m sorry if I’m asking a lot of questions😅
Don't apologize because this is what this channel is for.
You would add the appropriate Str or Dex modifier (depending if the weapon is melee, finesse melee, thrown, or ranged) plus the Proficiency Bonus modifier if you are proficient with that weapon.
So for example, my rapier would have a +5 atk bonus(+3dex) and i would present it as 1d8+5piercing?
You don't add your Proficiency Bonus to weapon damage rolls.
I see, thank you guys!
Unless of course, a rule says otherwise.
Remember, any rules advice is usually "the general rules", which a "specific rule" can always override. :)
Can you guys clarify what hit dice are?
Hit dice are the dice you roll to increase your Hitpoints when you gain a level
They are also rolled when you use them to heal up during a short rest.
hello
greetings
Hello there is anyone here wanting to teach me about the game?:)

Hello
Hiiiii 😁
Hows it going! This is so overwhelming lol But exciting at the same time!
A lot is happening on this server everyday tbh
thats awesome!
any advice for finding groups because ive looked in the looking for players chat and almost all of the ones that are my timezone are not wanting new players so should i try and ge6t my friends in and look for a dm or just keep looking
If you ever find a DM I'd like to play
Check out other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels, reddit, and Facebook.
Finding a good group is like dating. There's waiting to see if you're a match, there maybe drama, ghosting, or mismatches.
The easiest way is someone in your friend group to volunteer to be the DM.
thx
Check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
had the same issue finding open games within my timezone and day preferences. but posting for paid games, I had more than enough offers in literally minutes. I'm frankly pretty happy to pay the 10$ per session for the value the DM provides
Tbf I just gathered up all the friends I have. Asked all of them, and got a handful of 8 who were willing to try it. Only abt 6 actually play and enjoy it, kinda werid since the ones that said yes were the ones I didn't talk to as much.
thats a good idea i could reach out to old friends
YEAH THATS WHAT I DID
I built an better bond with them since I didn't talk to them very often and I found out they're actually pretty cool yk

What you struggling with
A one shot is a very short adventure, often completed in a single (real time) day.
However, due to the variances in people's play style, the number of hours they have to play the adventure, etc. It could be more than a single session.
Ight thanks man
TV analogy:
One shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = tv mini-series
Campaign = multi-season tv series
hm yes dyno is very usefull he said " " fax i agree
seriously though i have that weird bug which makes bots say nothing 99% of the time.
Make sure embeds are enabled
they legit are

I personally have found that creating a character by myself and playing around with it helps me understanding the game and creating characters a lil more
That’s what I might do, do a solo run with my character just to work out the dynamics and each turns moves etc
How do you solo run?
DND beyond you can make a scenario just pick some low level monsters to kill solo and see how you character works
o/ Hi I'm new in here and it's my first time making a dual class lvl 4 Artillerist lvl 2 Wizard Autognome for a campaign but I'm confused about what spells/Cantrips my character can choose from now, I'm just using a character sheet PDF (so no luxuries as DND beyond sadly) Anyone want to help me out?
Does it mean I can have 2 artificer cantrips and 3 wizard cantrips for a total of 5 or?
How many prepared spells can I have?
@lyric fjord thanks I will look into it
Still Need Help for building your Char?

Check out the Spells Known and Prepared section of the multiclassing rules.

what is opposed to the cleric class ?
If you wanted to make a life domain cleric
what would be the opposite ?
death domain
i dont know that was just a 12:49 am response to what im seeing
unless this question is what is opposite of cleric then rogue
ill let someone else with a brain answer because i dont think i helped
Most of the classes are made to work with each other, so you’ll rarely find features that are mechanically opposed to each other.
However, with the power of flavor and role play you could easily, as an example, use a warlock with a pact of the fiend in the party to be the foil to a divine caster.
Check out Ginny Di’s video on solo play for a primer.
You still need to know the rules, so read them online or browse some explainer videos. This interactive adventure may help: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
I will do
Oh yeah, I think I know that vid, took a peak at it but just couldn’t commit to playing solo, haha
It doesn’t have to be a commitment, since you could stop whenever you wanted, but do what’s right for you!
Hello I am pretty new to dnd, nice to meet you all😁
yeah but as another class
Hello! Welcome
How are you?
Since I'd like to make a character who has 2 personnalities, one calm as a life domain cleric and another, hysteric, as a death something class
Do check with the DM that this is acceptable.
Not too bad, just going to be sitting in class for another 5 hrs because they allotted waaay too much time for out testing, lol
he allows multiclassing so I guess this is okay
What you’re describing isn’t the same.
Dang, while I’m waiting for my next class I’m trying to make a character
This would be more suited to #character-discussion
He seems okay with it anyway
Mood, I found the best way to make a new character is to ask a friend or classmate to list a random number between 1-14 for class and race and see what comes of it, helps the creativity block that I seem to have when it comes to making new char
I already have the class and race but now subclasses are tricky
Ended up with a strength based tiefling rune knight fighter with a halberd, haha
I don’t know whether to go homebrew or not
If you’re new, I would steer away from homebrew for now.
Understandable
Butttt my character is a ranger(I always use ranger classes in other games I play)
Yeah I’ve been playing for just under a year now and only have 1 home brew spell and 2 decent home brew feats, making an entire sublclass seems like a massive challenge to be creative enough and to actually balance it for all levels of play, would take a lot of work
Yeah that’s true, my first character is just going to sticking to the players handbook
Ranger is a SRD class, wdym ?
Many of the existing ranger subclasses are cool as heck—gloom stalker, swarmkeeper, drake warden. But this is veering into #character-discussion, as mentioned above.
I’ve heard of swarm keeper but not the others
They’re not in the PHB; the more recent subclasses, which are among the most interesting, are from other books.
DnD beyond is a good starting tool/site to use for initial character creation and ideas but I believe there are more extensive sites, I think one is called Aurora when there’s a massive compendium of new and updated classes, races, spells, the whole shebang.
Plus having other books available on DnD beyond grants access to a few more sub/classes
I’ll check em out when I wanna create another ranger
D&D Beyond is owned by WotC so it's official.
Aurora isn't licensed so the only official races and classes are from the SRD.
Remember, if a site is offering content for free that is normally behind a paywall (whether it be digital or physical paywall) it is piracy
I've played DnD before but only in person because my friend was a DM and he invited me to play with his group. Life got in the way so the group kinda stopped getting together a couple of years ago. I wish to get back into it and was hoping to get some info on the best ways to find groups I could join online to play
Welcome! #find-a-game has some advice there.
Thank you. Much appreciated
how exacttly do saving throws work? charm person wants a wisdom saving throw but how do i know if one passes the throw?
The DM will tell you.
so they just make up a number?
They have to save against your Spell Save DC.
It's 8 + Spellcasting Modifier + Proficiency Bonus
ahhh so 13
It says it under the "Spells" tab in D&DB
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers.

Hi am new
Me too, Hi
Hello fellow new players
Welcome!
Hi. I’m Alli. I’m still pretty new to DnD but I look into making new friends and expanding my characters lore
Welcome 🙂
Hey I am new to dnd and hope that I can make some friends and gain more knowledge while on my adventures 🙂
Check out #find-a-game for instructions.
Thank you
Can I cast on myself cantrips and spells that give buffs, such as an additional dice on an ability check or stuff like that?
If a spell targets a creature of your choice, you can choose yourself, unless the creature must be hostile or specifically a creature other than you. If you are in the area of effect of a spell you cast, you can target yourself.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#TargetingYourself
alright thx
So I'm super new to all of this, I'm trying to convince some of my friends to try dnd with me but none us of really know what we are doing... and it looks like I'd need to be the DM -- but if I am the DM that means I have to (1) understand the game better than everyone else and (2) I can't be a player, right?
hey everyone! I want to try to find a group to play as player. I am a beginner dm but it would be nice to see how other people leading the game and maybe I will learn something new or something I didn't considered

DMs aren't solely responsible for knowing the rules, and if a rules question does come up, you've got plenty of options:
- ask someone else in the group
- look it up
- ask #dnd-rules
- make something up to keep the game going (then find the real answer afterwards and share with the group)
"better than everyone else" is not necessarily true. As long as the entire group goes into it knowing that it is a learning experience it is fine.
Especially in a scenario where the whole group is new to the game, rules questions should be expected. You're learning together.
As for not being a player, it is generally inadvisable for DMs to also be players, it is called a DM PC, and usually gets in the way of the experience for players. BUT, you and your friends should do what your group is comfortable with. If they want you to have a PC too, then go for it.
You're still a part of the game. You just control the world instead of a single character.
Finally, if you want to play and not DM, it is possible to find a DM for your group, although more difficult than just joining a group.
Depending on how your group plays (in person, online, etc) there are various options to finding one.
If you are playing in person, that will be the hardest option to finding a DM for your group (if that DM is not from the group itself)
Perhaps start off with an one-shot. There's less pressure to prepare as the mini-adventure is one (or maybe two) sessions long but it you'll get a taste of what it's like to DM.
(I was going to try and like each message I got as a response, but i'm getting more than I thought - just know everyone's responses are appreciated 🙂 )
When I came up with idea to play dnd with my friend on discord that so hard. Non of us knew how to play and I decided to be dm and write my own story for first campaign. It was so hard with creating character and I we somehow managed to play that first session, I don't think it was THAT bad but I think my friends still enjoyed it
Enjoy the mistakes, laugh about them. :)
Yeah, definitely doesn't have to be perfect. If everyone's having fun, you're doing it right.
I still think that it would be great for me to join someones campaign and get some experience from that
What 2 additional languages are good too have when playing only with the basic rules?
Depends on the campaign setting and where your PC starts. Lots of elves and dwarves around? Pick elvish and dwarvish.
I'm already a dwarf and we also have elves in our team
But since I don't really know anything about the campaign he prepared, what would be the safest bets?
(I'm a cleric if that changes anything)
Celestial is often fitting for a cleric.
I also picked draconic cuz there may be a chance of dragons
My Dwarf cleric knows orcish only to insult them
language choices are basically random, you will not be able to predict what will come up in the adventure.
I tend to pick one language that is 'allied' and one language that is usually 'bad guy', like goblin, orc, etc.
And since they know I picked it so that I could speak to dragons, there is a chance he'll add dragons for fun
Right
Draconic is a surprisingly useful language to have
Knowing him that might be the case
And just to make sure, if I want to make an ability check in a skill I'm efficient in, the score is d20+modifier+prof.modifier, right?
Yep!
There is a thing I didn't quite understand about saving throws
What about them?
So first of all, I have an advantage against poison (cuz dwarf) but how does that works exactly
And how do I know for what stat do I roll a saving throw?
Roll 2 d20s, pick the higher number
So I roll 2 d20 only in scenarios where there is an (dis)advantage from what I understood
Saving throw:
DM calls for a Save...example: Constitution Save
You say, is this for poison?
DM says yes.
You roll 2d20 and take the best, add your constitution save modifier.
If you have disadvantage, you roll 2d20s and take the lower result.
So the stat chosen for the saving throw is simply chosen by logic?
The stat chosen is dependent upon the attack, spell, effect, etc.
A poison save will usually specify Constitution Save
Example, if you are hit with the spell "Charm Person" the spell states which saving throw is used. Wisdom save in this case.
If it isn't an ability, some sort of logic is involved. Trying to dodge? Dex. Trying to resist something awry in your guts? Con.
What isn't specified by the rules is the DM's call.
(I'm gonna sound dumb I think) What about like normal attacks?
normal attack rolls are against AC (armor class), not saves
that's what I though
just wanted to be sure
you know
So if enemy attack hits, is it like Dmg-AC=actual dmg?
Nope. If their roll meets or exceeds your armor class, it hits. Then they roll damage dice.
Oh ok
no, it is attack roll vs AC
If the attack roll equals or exceeds the AC, then roll damage
dang it...ninja'd :D
I just realised that armor class depends on dexterity
usually, not always
In some cases.
here it says dex modifier
It depends on the armor.
Armour + Dex (if the armour allows)
I can't really compare cuz my dex modifier is at 0
Do I need Strength for a cleric?
(going for a support orientated character)
Not necessarily, but now you're in #character-discussion territory.
oh
Light Armor - works best with high dex
Medium Armor - works well with some, but low Dex
Heavy Armor - works best with no or negative dex, but needs strength to use well.
Str is only useful if you want to use melee weapons that aren't Finesse
Armor class options:
unarmored: 10 + Dexterity
Light armor: armor value + Dexterity
Medium armor: armor value + Dexterity (max 2)
Heavy armor: armor value (no dex modifier)
Barbarians: 10+Dexterity+Constitution
Monks: 10+Dexterity+Wisdom
Some races: 13+Dexterity if not wearing armor
there are more specialized races, rules, etc.
Well, gotta wait till Sunday then cuz that's when we do equipment and stuff before we start our adventure
Of course, most of those options then get to add shield (if any) to the AC. Unless they are not allowed to do so (like monk)
Can someone briefly explain how saving throw works? At what moment it can be used and how to determent difficulty for the saving throw?
Saves are whenever a special ability, spell, etc calls for them.
Get hit with Charmed Person? the spell states you roll a Wisdom Save
As for DC, the DC is either set out in the monster's stat block, or for PCs it is a calculation.
🤔
For player characters: 8 + Proficiency Bonus + the relevant ability score
Example:
A wizard's spells are based on the wizard's intelligence modifier. The wizard has an intelligence of 16, that is a +3.
The wizard is level 1, so their proficiency bonus is +2.
So the DC is 8 + 2 (proficiency bonus) + 3 (intelligence modifier) = 13
Any spell the wizard casts that says the opponent rolls a save is against that 13.
If the rules don't determine the number to meet or exceed, as in a monster stat block or in a pre-written adventure, the DM determines what number equals success if you're the one rolling. Otherwise, the formula above applies when enemies roll against YOUR abilities.
As the wizard increases in level the proficiency bonus will increase and the intelligence bonus is likely to increase (if the player chooses to increase it later on).
Hm ok thank you
what's DC?
Difficulty Class.
AKA the number you need to meet or exceed on a roll (plus relevant modifiers).

Yo
When you have a character idea and would like to play but is turned off by the roleplay aspect
How do you mean
Hiyo
is there rely a best in dnd or is it how you play it
What do you mean "really a best in D&D"?
sorry i should have been more clear, is ther a best class or multi class
No
There are some people who firmly believed they have figured out d&d and act like this is the only way you should play, but in reality it's super subjective and what really matters is that you and the people you are playing with have fun
nope, although there are optimizers that think they have a 'best'
Each class has its own role in a party.
Indeed! Every edition tries to ensure every class has its time in the spotlight. There is no one "Best class" .
the best class is the one you feel like playing the most.
i just started and i have somewhat no clue how to play
Every class has an environment where they are good at something. There are infinite scenarios where an artificer is better than a wizard at that scenario and vice versa.
What you need help with?

i wanna be a wizard im just waiting on some sheets but i wanna know how the attacking and the moving and the interactions work i have a starter kit
So when its your turn. You have an action, a bonus action and movement.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I would read the relevant chapters of the rule book first
You can do them in whichever order you want. Eg. Move 15 feet, cast a spell, move another 5 feet etc
Every spell in their description tells you if it requires an action to perform or a bonus action
ok
you only have 1 of them each except for special ocassions
ill watch that youtuber and see if it makes anymore sense
You can ask here or DM any questions you have.
ty ty
Watching it in conjuction with reading the rules helps alot
Since you're a wizard, i'd also recommend checking out your spellbook too. It'll come in handy to know what you can do as a master of the arcane arts!
You can't wear anything metal or heavier, correct.
They can wear any class of armor, it just cannot be metal
They can even acquire Heavy armor proficiency, just not wear metal :)
Does anyone still follow that quirk
Proficiencies
Armor: Light armor, medium armor, shields (druids will not wear armor or use shields made of metal)
Thank you and also thank you @jovial raptor
so stuttered leather armor is OK , for example !
There are options for non-metal versions of metal armor, they can be tough to find though.
Ask your artificer to make you heavy wood armour https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/914950571797143563.webp?size=48&quality=lossless
I found that in most games I played in, Druids were in fact not wearing metal armor, though some DMs allowed them to craft or obtain non metal equivalents
The metal "restriction" is purely flavor and is not a mechanical restriction
For example, the adventure Storm King's Thunder has Stone Breastplate.
Amazing
Thats it im making mushroom armor
3.5E had plenty of non-standard material types for armours and shields.
Just make sure your dm is ok with it before you set your heart on it
yes and no, due to the wording, the base druid class fantasy and the legacy of it, its very often enforced by DMs and/or followed by players anyway.
make armour out of pastries
ofc are dnd campaign is a lot of laughs

It was even brought up in the SAC, much like how punch smiting was a narrative choice that didn't actually affect the balance of the game, the same is true for druid. It is a narrative restriction that has no mechanics tied to it, and as long as you stick within the druid proficiencies it will still be balanced and not break the game
It's much less a "can't wear metal armor" and much more "most druids choose not to"
Proto-Environmentalists basically
But they will use metal swords and spell components 🤔

THANKSSS
Is there a way to play dnd with no board game but digital??
You can use voice chat and a digital character sheet like the dnd beyond app
DnDBeyond has a mobile app to run your character sheets on.
Use Discord or other voice chat system to chat with folks to play the game.
Per server rules do not post or share your specific age
Online you can do virtual tabletop (VTT), play by post, or just voice.
It's okay - now you really know.
Ty for help
For playing without a table (or virtual table) it is called "theater of the mind", where you imagine the battle etc rather than see it mapped out.
Heya I’m pretty new to dming and I have some friends who wanna play and I’m gonna be the dm dose anyone know what’s a good starting module ? Or any kind tips for a new dm?
Lost Mines of Phandelvar is free on DnDBeyond and is a good adventure for new DMs and new to the game players.
Thank you for the suggestion!
My first adventure I DM'd and the one I suggest to others is the one-shot Breath of the Yellow Rose: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/170480/DDEX206-Breath-of-the-Yellow-Rose-5e
It has exploration, social and combat encounters so you get a taste of the big three things 5e adventures have to offer. Better yet, it can be completed in 4-6 hours and only costs $4
Hey, if anybody knows.. My friend is playing a rogue and is using the character sheet on Dndbeyond, everytime she rolls damage for her dagger, it always by default applies sneak attack damage even when she isn't sneaking. Anybody know why?
Are you using a browser extension like Beyond20? Perhaps they've set it up to automatically add sneak attack damage.
You would have to ignore it because Beyond20 doesn't know the situation triggers a Sneak Attack or not.
Hey i am new here and my DM is new to DMing and they are not using constitution or dex how do i explain how to use it and why to them?
If anybody knows how or do i type it in a different channel?
Constitution gives addition hit points if higher than 11.
Dexterity gives bonus to AC if higher than 11.
Both helps in the survivability of PCs.
Those aren't things DMs should remove from the game unless they want the PCs to die faster.
Alright may i have an example of when to use them for future reference
Have your DM watch Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Alright thanks
Can you explain a little more? In what way were you expecting the DM to use them?
Hey im new to D&D for the most part and im trying to find a group in LFP but it's hard to tell if it would good for a new player, should I just ask or what sort of thing should I look for
Just ask the DM/poster. Many groups are fine with taking on new to D&D players as long as they show a willingness to read and learn the rules and get along well with the rest of the group.
What should I put as my 3 weapons I already have a dagger but I’m a wizard and sage and don’t know what to put for my other 2 slots
You could put whatever damage-dealing cantrips you have for quick reference.
How do I know what cantrips I have do I just chose them?
At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list.
This is from the wizard class description.
I would be proficient in them right? So I can add my proficiency bonus
There’s two possible numbers you’d need, depending on whether the spell asks for an attack or a saving throw.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
So I would add my int modifier and my proficient bonus and that is my attack bonus
Yeah
So for a spell like Fire Bolt, when it says this:
Make a ranged spell attack against the target.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/fire-bolt
You’d roll a d20, add your spell attack modifier (and any situational bonuses), and compare the total to the target’s AC to see if you hit.
So last question when I roll the d20 I roll and see if it’s above the AC and if it is I hit then do I add the attack bonus to my damage I do with the cantrip

Generally not. Spells typically do the damage mentioned in the spell description.
For comparison, Magic Stone says this:
On a hit, the target takes bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your spellcasting ability modifier.
hey, i want to make a rogue themed around light. Its not smart, but it sounds cool, what spellcasters could i multiclass into that has light related spells?
That would be a #character-discussion question
thanks, new to this server so my bad
S'all good
please dont ban me

can someone help me how to use roll20

This channel is for beginner topics
I think the best one is the one that's fun for you to play.
Hey I'm new I've only played on shard before
Welcome! If you haven't already, check out the pinned message on this channel. It has links to lots of good resources to help get you started with D&D.
Is there a set class to choose from or can we make it up
There are 13 official classes, your DM however may allow homebrew classes but you would need to check first
Oh okay cool so do people play on shard or is it all in person
People play D&D in many different ways
In person, online via text/chat, even email and forums (play by post style).
One popular way to play is on Discord with DnDBeyond for character sheets and Avrae Bot to handle dice rolls/initiative.
Some folks use Virtual Tabletops - like Shard, FoundryVTT, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Owlbear.Rodeo, etc. to provide maps and tokens.
But at the end of it all - all you really need to play D&D is the free basic rules, character sheets for the players, dice (digital or physical), and a way to communicate with everyone.
How do I gain more weapons do I just give myself them or do I have to go into a campaign
Do you have a basic understanding of how D&D works?
(that'll help with how best to answer your question)
Kinda
most likely depends on the DM if they allow it in my honest opinion
Oh so I can just get a weapon
If your DM allows it, yes.
You don't just make your character with whatever you want. The idea is that you create them within the limitations set by the DM (level, starting gold, starting gear etc) and progress through the game finding new equipment/wealth/magic items as would make sense in the story
You might swap your shortsword for a longsword you buy from a blacksmith, or upgrade your armor with a breastplate taken from a fallen enemy
good example for starting a lvl 12 character i as DM usually allow one uncommon weapon which normally has the +1 stat since its a high lvl campaign
im not your DM so im not granting you this u gotta ask who is running the campaign ur in
When playing an Archer subclass (Fighter/Ranger), does the Sharpshooter or Piercer Feat get you more bang for your buck? I know about CE and hand crossbow but like the "look" of a longbow.
That'd be a question for #optimization
Oh. Sorry. An a newbie.
s'all good, no harm, no foul
Where do I find text/chat games
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
the D&D Beyond forums also have a play by post section
And #looking-for-community has a bunch of pbp server listings
