Yes, if you are an Alchemist you are more support or ranged. Use the spell Magic Stone to attack with.
It does 1d6 + Intelligence damage
Can that only be used once or is it 8 hours everyday after you use it
8 hours every day
That sounds good
When you activate it that day you choose which cantrip you want for the day. For the next 8 hours you can use that cantrip as much as you want.
Shillelagh is an excellent choice for a daily cantrip like that.
Can it change everyday?
yes, you select the cantrip when you activate the All-Purpose Tool
but as I said, it is a magic item (uncommon) so it will be a bit until you get ahold of one. BUT it is Artificer specific.
Perhaps I should ask this, what is it you want to do as an Alchemist?
I just like the idea of the potions
I think it's cool
you don't need to be an Alchemist to make potions
Yeah but alchemist gets free ones
Alchemists get Elixirs, not potions. Their properties are limited, and random unless you sacrifice a spell slot.
But, it is personal preference...up to you :)
Alchemists do get Healing Word...which is very good
Yeah
and with the level 5 ability, Alchemical Savant, they can heal even more with Healing Word
They can also cast a free greater restoration and have resistance to poison and acid
Buts that higher level
Is ray is sickness considered good?
My suggestion, focus on Magic Stone as your 'damage option' when not using higher level spells. Then, start packing some damage spells that gain benefit of Alchemical Savant.
Many (most?) campaigns never reach level 15.
Ok
Ray of Sickness: It can work fine, but like most attack spells it is all or nothing. I personally hate all or nothing spells.
But let me contrast it for you:
Magic Stone: 1d6+4 (assuming +4 intelligence) for a 7.5 average
Ray of Sickness: 2d8 for an average of 9.
You burned a level 1 spell to do.... 1.5 points of damage more than a free spell.
The poisoned effect is a nice bonus, but it is not the main point of the spell and only lasts for one round IF they fail the saving throw.
Meanwhile, you could have used Faerie Fire to cause all the enemies in a 20' cube area (who fail their saves) to be more easily hit by all of your allies.
OK hello :3
is any dm running a one shot?
same here, i want to start learning how to play :3

If I want to create a custom paladin oath. Are the spells give by the oath paladin specific or is it any spell ?
The spells on the official paths are specifically chosen to fit the theme of the subclass.
So class restriction doesn't matter as long as it fits the theme of the subclass ?@dapper gulch
Well, it matters as much as you ensuring itās balanced, fits the theme youāre going for, and your DM allowing homebrew.
Kk thanks.
Is this server a bot server or like a people server?
What do you mean?
Like players not bots
That still doesn't really clarify
We use bots on this server as part of it's management (avrae, dyno, monodrone)
oh i see I meant do we play with bots or players
People come here to discuss D&D.
Bots may be used to assist moderation/services, but real people use the server.
oh i joined in search for players
Oh we generally don't play D&D on this specific server if that's what you're asking
D&D is not designed to be played with bots

where does one go, to find first dnd game
It seems my answer is infront of mine eyes
Hello! Iām a new dm and will be running mines of phandelver for new players. Iāve never played before but Iāve always wanted to, and Iām very excited to dm. Is it okay if I ask some basic questions?
I've ran Lost Mine of Phandelver twice
if they're campaign-specific questions, #1029835597168267384 is better, but if they're general questions about the game like "when should I roll an ability check", this is the place
General questions
Like I see thereās player versions of maps, when do I give those to them?
Thatās up to you!
Using a visible map can help give everyone a shared vision of where things are in relation to one another (plus itās just a fun visual surprise).
But maps arenāt required to play.
ā¦I misread the question. š
But when you give it to them (not if) is still up to you.
Like I get the major map of Barovia but do I give them the player version of the dungeon maps?
Generally no
I wouldnāt show them a dungeon map until theyāve arrived at the dungeon, at least.
The map of the dungeon is for the DM to reference when describing things
And even then, I use a VTT so I can hide the parts of it they havenāt actually visited.
Thatās what I thought.
It gets revealed room by room as they explore.
Vtt?
Virtual Table Top
In my case: https://www.owlbear.app/
Oooo
Worth noting that the player version of the maps isnāt found in the physical books.
So again, showing them anything is not required.
Ah. I only have digital books for now.
Some DMs might simply describe each room the party visits.
Others might rebuild it using models.
Or you could grab a blank piece of paper and give them a rough sketch of each room as they visit it.
Itās really up to you and whatever works for your group.
how does attunement work, can i be attuned to multiple items?
Yes, to a maximum of three
It takes 1 hour to attune to an item by default and you must meet any requirements
thanks
Full rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#Attunement
Are there any handouts I should give my players? (mines of phandelver)
The adventure will tell you if anything should be specifically given to the players as handouts
for LMoP there are no handouts required. you can always make your own though
I have no idea what that is
itās a markdown based note tool
easy to search and link things
Iād share a screenshot but canāt in this channel
but I have rulebooks and stuff in it too, for ease of searching and linking to items, monsters, and all that
I dropped a screenie in #dnd-arts-and-crafts
nvm it was deleted, idk where I can share the screenshot
@modern pulsar Please don't use the channels with image permissions enabled for general image sharing
We don't have channels for general image sharing
oh.
You can share a link to an image in any channel, though.
hereās a small informational link, I got some of the ideas from here - https://phd20.com/how-i-prepare-for-dnd-with-obsidian
can I research a background based on what proficiency it gives me on dndb ?
When you say 'research', do you mean 'search'?
yeah
Yes, under the skills section in the backgrounds page
thank you
Yo
looks very neat
I know markdown. just didn't know obsidian
the backlinks functionality is incredible
Is there a chnnel to discuss my character characteristics?
this is the link I was looking for! https://phd20.com/2021-12-20-getting-started-with-obsidian-dnd/
yeah, so if you want to, for instance, give the ||note that Nezznar writes to Albrek|| to your players, rather than just reading it out loud, you can totally do that
Q - both your weapons have to be light to make two attacks per turn right?
Both weapons must be light to use the two-weapon fighting rule to make an additional attack as a bonus action*
*The dual wielder feat lets you ignore this restrictions
There are other ways to make two attacks per turn that do not have this restriction
If you are a Bladesinger you can ^^
I think there are other class features that allow it, but generally not.
Only the cantrips Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade which do that intrinsically, Bladesingers can after level 6 and Eldritch Knights at 7
And Shillelagh
I need help
With?
I got a sheet to fill out for my character idk what to do

Are the only spells known by paladins those given by their oath ?
Or can they choose spells when they level up ?
They prepare their spells. So they already "know" all of their spells
Man it's been so long since I met one on a discord server
Paladins get to 2 spells from their oath for each lvl available to them. Aside that they can prepare a number of spells equal to Charisma Mod plus half their lvl from the Paladin spell list
Nope. Those are just bonus spells that are always prepared. Paladins can prepare spells each day based on whatās in their spell list, their CHA mod, and what spell slots they have access to.
M
Hi, are you building a Paladin? Just for fun to try it, or you found a group to Play with already
I'm Dming for a group. We are all beginners but I watched critical role so I'm stuck trying to figure out what to do lol.
Iād recommend avoiding homebrew if itās your first go at the game, doubly so if youāre DMāing. Thereās enough rules already without adding even more!
You can ask questions/advice in #dm-discussion
We're just trying to have fun. Not enough spells able to create dragon-shaped fireballs.
Erm fireball can look how ever you want it too
Flavor is always free! Firebolt does 1d10 fire damage if itās cube, phoenix, sphere, or face shaped!
True

Hi there. Im new to this discord and i would like to upload my info to the the "find DM" channel. But i have no idea how the process works, thanks.
Type /looking-for and select the appropriate choice. You'll be given a private form.
In this very channel?
This is explained in #find-a-game.
Myself and 5 friends started playing in January and we've been going through Lost Mines of Phandelver which has been great to get to grips with D&D. As a new DM the initial idea of it was overwhelming, but 2 months in and I've homebrewed minor things and run a One-Shot which has now created a 'background' villain in our campaign.
Biggest tip I can give is to use a small adventure like LMoP and just experiment with the game, my players allow me to make suggestions of what they can do in certain areas so they know what possibilities there are as initially they were barely ever investigating or using their perception in rooms. They've never listen at a door and would also bash it in. We're getting close to the end of this adventure and all looking forward to creating new characters with the knowledge they have gained around the game. I have planned an adventure bridge at the end of LMoP leading in to the next adventure where our players will transition to their new planned characters using a boss fight with the 'background' villain š
Two months and you're near the end? Impressive. My group is 15 months in, and there's still a chunk of the adventure left.
Hi, any DMs here run Dragon Age campaigns?

@harsh fjord yeah my players just steamroll through a lot of stuff and weren't initially comfortable with RP'ing, they also find the lvl 1-5 progression underwhelming so we've sped that up. They got through the Castle in 1 session (5 hours). Don't get me wrong theres still a few side things left and the final location which I know could take another month or 2 so not so bad. I'm expecting a completely different speed next adventure.
still can't post in them so ill do it here
I was looking at joining a weekly game, but something in the description gave me pause. it says you start at level 1 and you level up once per week.
Is this a typical arrangement?
It seemed a bit strange for me, coming from video game settings where typically you'd find some way to catch up newcomers to the party, otherwise they're basically dead weight.
Please do not post your game advert here
What level were the rest of the group?
what choice do I have?
@lament nest You have to run a command in #1075498333705089084. What command you have to write is determend what you are looking for as described in #find-a-game. When you run the command, a prompt will show up in chat youhave to fill out and our bot will make a post for you. Make sure your Discord is up to date.
The information is all there in the info box provided
I don't know if there's such a thing as typical, but I would say it's probably uncommon to get that much experience in one session (or to reach a story milestone).

Iām using D&D beyond for character creation and when selecting a feat Iām not being provided with the option to choose the observer feat anyone know why?
Do you have the associated book purchased?
Iām not too sure what book itās in so thereās a possibility I might not
Player's Handbook (PHB), assuming you mean "Observant" rather than "Observer" :)
Yes I do mean Observant but I sadly do not own the PHB yet, Iāll definitely need to get my hands on that next. Thank you!
You can buy the feat by itself if thatās all you want.
How do I do that?
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Ah! Alright.
?phb
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the worldās greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
Youāll find it on that page. āš»
Thank you!
what is Passive perception based on ?
idk
10 + Wisdom modifier
Any passive score is 10 + whatever youād normally add to that roll.
So yes, your Wisdom mod, but if youāre proficient in Perception, youād also add your proficiency bonus.

Hi, can i do personal checks just to know what my character will say? Like for example roll a charisma check for myself just to get the overall mood of the words ill use or a science check to see if i want to act a certain way
I guess you could, but that isn't in the rules nor is that customary.
Oki, it wouldnt be of actual value other than just personal lore yk, its just RPing blind for me is hard
Iāve done it before. šš»
Hello there
Definitely do what works for you.
Oh cool have any specifics you can suggest?
Like interpreting it in speech or whatnot
How does modifiers works? More precisely, how do I know what modifier do I have?
Modifiers are generally related to ability scores and your level (which affects your proficiency bonus).
The thing that confuses me, is that I made a character on DnD Beyond, and for example, I rolled a 17 for Wisdom, and I have a +3 modifier from somewhere, and I'm a mountain dwarf so it's not a racial bonus, so where does that +3 comes from?
Each score results in a specific modifier. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Oh so based on how much I roll I get a modifier is that it?
Hello, I have near 0 knowledge about DnD but I love drawing DnD based charachters
I was wondering, I am making a Changeling charachter and I don't know what people make their changeling's class? What is the most popular one?
I am asking this to make a charachter design, not to play š
Changelings can be any class really, really, but I think a rogue plays well given the class's tendency to be sneaky, which changelings can excel at with their particular ability.
Oh, thank you ^^
Very nice, thank you both
Lost Mine of Phandelver is from level 1 to 5 and is often a good starting module for people
The Lost Mine of Phandelver, it's free with all D&D Beyond accounts.
The other starter adventures, Dragon of Icespire Peak and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, are also geared toward new folks, but LMoP has the distinct advantage of being free.

Oh okay
I was just in dnd discussion and had no clue what they were saying lol
I was in a different dnd discord for a while and made a character
I liked the character and i don't want to make another one soo soon so do I have to make another one or do i have to make him level one again
Lmao
depends on the DM, however, your gear and ability scores will probably have to be remade.
The level will depend on the starting level your new DM determines.
Is warforged a good race to pair with wizard?
any race can be paired with any class. With that said though, it depends on if you are using the ability scores determined by race or if you can assign your ability scores anywhere you want as per the optional rule in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
If you are not able to give your wizard a bump up in Intelligence, it might hurt a bit.
So where should I get started to join a dnd session @fresh plaza
Thanks Gauss

Thanks! I saw it in the other channel but didn't know if I could use this command here. Again thank you very much <3
Is there somewhere I can ask for help about making a certain kind of character? I had an idea but no clue how to make it work
You read the (free) Basic Rules already?
Well yea
I just don't know how the logistics of it would work out
I'm "new" to dnd having consumed a lot of content about it but not enough real play to know much
What issue(s) are you having?
Hey do all campaigns start usually at lv1?
Well the idea was a sorcerer who used teleportation spells to steal, Robin Hood style, used his brain rather than his body
The only "issue" I'm having is that I don't know how to get the most bang for my buck out of teleportation
Kinda like a Jumper/Nightcrawler teleportation thing if you're familiar with that
Well, there are only a handful of teleportation spells. Misty Step is the closest to Nightcrawler's "bamf" ability.
Up to the DM but many start at level 3, to bypass the 'basic' levels that many people don't like.
Personally, I start PCs at whatever level is appropriate for the adventure.
With experienced players I may start them at level 3 (depending on the adventure/campaign of course).
I'm not like emotionally attached to the Nightcrawler idea
It was more of an example to help get my idea across
I think a getaway artist is more the phrase I'd wanna use
I think balancing at 3rd/4th level is much easier and it lets the player do much more
The problem you are going to have -V is that you can only cast one spell a round (usually). So as a Wizard you cannot walk up to the enemy, cast a touch spell, then teleport away.
However, if you were a melee build with that spell, you could walk up...pound on the enemy, and teleport away.
Any martial 1/2 spellcasting class could pull that off, and you can use a feat to pick up Misty Step if your class doesn't give it to you.
I think like some levels in monk and some levels in sorcerer could do it
Use the action to cast the teleport, use the monk's unarmed attacked to deal the damage and keep your movement
I'd move in, attack, and then teleport away afterwards. No opportunity attack
Hmm
I think I'm getting a better understanding now, thanks peoples
Whats up DND discrod, im new here, and wanna learn the game, where im from nobody plays DND and its something id let to get into

wow thats cool, thank you
Is there any way to find out a bit more in depth info about the perks of the things like the three skills you can choose when making your char. Looking at the player handbook but not having any luck
The different skill proficiencies are all explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
Also, you may have more than 3 skill proficiencies. You generally pick up 2 from your background in addition to your class (and possibly race)
Yeah, it is showing three and i was torn between a couple for the last one
Hey! I'm just getting into the D&D world for the first time ā thought i'd hop onto discord while I watch YouTube videos to figure this stuff out
Hiya, literally same. Iāve just been studying the three core rule books and watching a bunch of yt videos š„¹ Had nooo chance to actually talk to someone about it though
Yeah, it's kind of overwhelming!
I'm hoping it'll feel easier once I just started playing (and have a DM to help sort though allll the information).
Oh my god, tell me about it. I got as far as making a character and figuring out what each of the dice is actually for, Iāve been making little notes to help myself learn lmao
I bought pretty die š haahaha and 90% filled out one character sheet, but feel like I defeinitely messed up some modifiers
I can't even remember what i had for breakfast I'm not sure how I'm going to remember all this hahaha
Omg- I bought a cute set of dice too! Borderline turning into a dice hoarder, resisting all the urges to spend all my money on dice sets and books š„¹
You see this is why Iām making handy dandy notes, translating the book language into that which my pea size brain would be able to process š
Have you seen the handbook helper series on youtube?
Oo sounds like something preeetty helpful
It is linked up here for you
Lifesaver.
Hey! Never played D&D before and I'd like to try getting into it. Hoping I could get into a one-session thing to see if I enjoy it. ^^

The answer is both.
is is char discussion or optimize we can let some experienced player check over newbie sheet to make sure they are too ott
For regular review, I suggest #character-discussion.
If you're focused on optimization and are okay with heavily opinionated white-room theorizing number crunching, you can use #optimization.
ty
Jesus this player's handbook is so thicc šµāš« is there some parts i can skip or are there any essential parts that i jave to read to get started
I would stick with the rules that are relevant to the character you want to play
So if you want to play fighter, I wouldn't necessarily worry about spell casting right away
Have you checked out the Handbook Helper series on youtube?
Yea i just learnt about it am watching it now haha, cause im planning to start n dm a one shot game with my nephew, and he wants to be a gnome rogue, so im hoping to prepare by this weekend
Oh nice! What are you gonna run?
im not exactly sure yet am hoping to run something with skeletons or bugs haha so we could use some necron miniatures i have from warhammer, but someone earlier recommended wildsheep chase and i have that downloaded
if theres any recommendations i would gladly welcome them
I want to play a dnd game and new comer
I think wild sheep chase is like level 4 or 5. If you wanted to do level 1 there is "A most potent brew" that does a great job of introducing a lot of concepts. There are a whole mess of free and pay what you want one shots on dmsguild
Ohhh nice I'll go look at that one then, yea theres a lot and i have no idea which hahaha am overwhelmed
But honestly im hoping to join a game first if possible so i can roughly know hows it gonna be haha cuz i know critical role campaigns are way outta my league rn haha
Ngl, I wouldn't expect any game to be to that level

ok so bascialy im trying to make a charater that is a rogue and a sorcerer and i want to know if its a good thing to do?
like for the charater
That'd be a question for #character-discussion or #optimization
ok thank you
Hey peeps could i know what's the number in brackets for next to a monsters stats? Do i add that to the stat already there or?
it depends what stats.
So for HP it might say: 11 (2d8 + 2). Here '11' is the average HP, but if you wanted to roll, you could roll 2d8+2 to make a random HP.
For abilities like Con, where is says: 12 (+1) '12' is the score and '+1' is the modifier.
Modifiers are what are typically used- added to saves, checks and skills that use that ability.
Hi. Did the server get an update? I'm confused. XD

Would this chart be accurate for new players in terms of optimization
Artificer - INT CON DEX Everything else
Barbarian - STR CON DEX Everything else
Bard - CHA DEX CON Everything else
Cleric - WIS CON DEX Everything else
Fighter - Either STR CON DEX Everything else or DEX CON Everything else
Monk - DEX or WIS then CON Everything else
Paladin - STR or CHA then CON Everything Else
Ranger - DEX or WIS then CON Everything else
Rogue - DEX CON Everything else
Sorcerer - CHA CON DEX Everything else
Warlock - CHA CON DEX Everything else
Wizard - INT CON DEX Everything else
Questions about optimization should be asked in #optimization
If you're asking about class quick builds, that's presented at the start of each classes description
Oh alright
Hey guys are the ability scores for acrobatics, atheltics etc the same number as their main counterparts like if ur dexterity is 16, then acrobatics is also 16 or do i roll a dice to determine for all of them
no i meant i got the numbers for the 6 abilities, but how do i determine for the different skills, like lets say: im a rogue with a +2 proficiency bonus in perception, and my wisdom is 8, so does the skill check just work as follows:
wisdom 8= -1 modifier,
proficiency perception +2,
so skill check is D20+1
That's where the first link comes in
or is there a separate number for the perception skill itself
Using your ability score to determine your ability modifier
This is correct
okok thanks
Convert score to modifier
Add modifier and proficiency (if you have it) to d20 roll
yea i was confused on whether there was a stat number to the seperate skills, and if the proficiency bonus is an additional bonus to that number like racial bonuses hahahaah
thanks haha

me trying to find a group who says new people welcome
@balmy flax Winghorn Press has a bunch of free adventures that only require access to the free Basic Rules. "A Most Potent Brew" is a level 1 adventure that should take 3 or so hours, but they have ones for different levels.
There's also Matt Colville's Delian Tomb for an even more straightforward game.
Where do i look for these winghorn press respurces? They official game stories or 3rd party type stuff?
Third-party. They have a website (https://winghornpress.com/); check the Adventures tab. You can find the Delian Tomb via Google. You can also skim DMsGuild for free/pay-what-you-want one-shots.
I have never played dnd before how can you play online?
All you need is the free basic rules and a way to connect with people you want to play with, also you need a character sheet.
Things like DnD beyond and Roll20 are good for playing online, but you could also use discord or zoom.
I donāt really know either, unfortunately.
You can google dnd beyond though.
Thanks for the pointers razor. Your the man š¤ gonna send u a friend request. Thanks again brother.

thankyou
on DnDBeyond if you purchase a digital book can you search just that book? I noticed the search bar at the top searches a lot of content I don't have
You can do it in the mobile app.
Just open the book you want and hit the magnifying glass at the top of the screen (not the one at the bottom).
is there an app?
It's linked in the ?new resources, but to call it out specifically: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
How long does dragons of stormwreck take to complete?
That depends on your players as they control the pacing.
Is there atleast a general rule of thumb length? Just trying to find some quick, one night storys for my first group. Razor gave me a good suggestion but im just browsing to see whatelse is out here
You want an one-shot adventure
Adventures will often (but not always) say in the first page or two how long it's expected to run for. Some don't specify a length and just use the generic "a one-shot" adventure, which is somewhere in the range of 2-5 hours.
If im trying to get into DND where is the best place to start?

@harsh fjord @cobalt frigate gotcha, thanks. Ill google some one shot adventures. How viable would u say a āhome brewā story is for a completely new group?
Doable, but you're setting yourself a harder task because as a new DM there's a ton you don't know.
My idea for the night is make 2 physical maps. Town setting with a bar to begin the adventure and the. Travel to a literal dungeon style setting. 2 small encounters with villain chronies and then the big final battle.
Why is a homebrew story harder than one of these one shot stories? Is there more literature/help within the downloadable content for the one shots that i dont know about?
I think it's easy to under- or over-estimate how much to include in a homebrewed one-shot. Plus, you would need to make combat encounters, and that's an easy place to screw up as a new DM. I've been at it for nearly two years, and I still muck it up.
Homebrewing takes work, a lot if you're a new DM.
There are plenty of one-shots available on sites like DMs Guild.
Gotcha
Have you guys DMād any of these one shots?
I like the one u sent me but i need a different ending villan than a huge rat šš
Rats give me ptsd from my very first campaign. Very first quest to clear a room of rats for the bartender and within 20 minutes the whole party was dead and we had to restart lol
You can always use the same stats and just change "what" the creature actually is.
Gotcha. Yea thats not a bad idea. Have u DMād this specific story?
I've seen it played but haven't DM'd it. I've done Winghorn's Wild Sheep Chase, which is level 4/5.
U mind if i send u a friend request for a couple questions i may have later after i download the atory and all that?
You'd get more opinions by posting in #dm-discussion once you reach that point. I prefer to keep interactions on the server, thanks!
My favorite intro one shot is "A most potent brew"
I recommended that one earlier!
Great minds
Yea np. Thanks for the help regardless š
Hey there Adventurers
mkay, made a char, hopefully ok. Basically a wood elf ranger that lives in the High Forest in a small tribe. She hunts sells pelts and furs with her tribe to have a bit of coin but mainly is fairly self sufficient as they are taught to do. (ie: fletching her arrows, skinning and using knowledge of flora and fauna for surviving her daily life) Hopefully is isn't to goddy https://ddb.ac/characters/96396639/4ZR0rw
Neat!
Iād suggest swapping your WIS and CON scores. Youāll end up with a +2 in each, instead of the current +2/+1.
The rest looks good, though! šš»
cool ty, lol now just got to figure out how to play
umm no, guess try to go through roll20 to play?
If downtime is given to the player's, can they do side quest or whatever they want? Which one?
That would be down to the DM to decide
It means that both of it can?
The DM decides what options players have during downtime
Or if they even have downtime at all.
Hello
Iām happy to be here lol, iāve allways wanted to play DND but no one in my area plays

There's also things like meetup.com or even facebook for finding local games- and checking out if you have a local game store, if they host a game or know of any being hosted!
Yup, I found one of two new players on a local Facebook D&D page.
I'd ask what you mean by downtime here, because potentially both, but usually in 5e Downtime is a specific mechanic- Tasha's and the DMG have downtime activities like crafting items, learning languages, shopping for magic items at an auction, gambling, so on. They're set tables and rolls that your character spends time on and the end result might be determined by thier skills and how well they rolled.
'downtime' loosely between major plot points can be a great time to do small side quests, but that isn't usually the purpose of downtime, which is usually meant to be 'a lot of time where you aren't adventuring and can do something else'
I have done small oneshots as part of downtime though, like a player pointed out 'Hey, is that a dragon lair marked on the map?... can we go raid it?' so I made a quick 'raid the green dragon lair' session for them, before we got back to main campaign, and said 'this event happens at this point during downtime- congrats you now have more gold for crafting and buying items'
Wondering if anyone knows of any more experienced DMs that will be doing games that welcome newbies.
Many groups are fine with new to the game players as long as they show a willingness to read and learn the rules and just generally fit well with the rest of the group.
Im just looking for a group of maybe a max of 4 players, that would be fine with newbies, except there is a lack of posts in #looking-for-players
Keep looking. Finding a good group is like dating.
There are many posts but whether itās the right one for you is a whole different question. Be patient and keep looking.
I posted in LFP last week, found a player within half an hour, and then deleted the post. You have to keep looking because there are few DMs with openings at their tables and when there is an opening it gets filled up very quickly.
Yeah well see, im just specific and looking for some group that uses DND Beyond and Roll20 and also Discord, and also isn't looking for 18+.
I'll just keep looking anyways.
Hello! Any people new here ? I'm running a small oneshot for new players. using roll20 so if you don't know that one you can learn about it it too. Hit me up lf 1 more person and we are starting right now

Noobie question. Do players in d&d normally have an inventory of belongings? Such as determining you have a backpack, some rope, food, etc
Yes - each character gets starting equipment (or gold). See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#5ChooseEquipment

If you have a local games store or library, you can check if they have any tabletop programming. Otherwise, lots of opportunity to learn how to play and find others online, though it does take patience and luck.
Everything i see talks about making up a big back story or creating a lore behind your char. Is that really needed?
as a noobie
Nope.
It can make for a deeper, more interesting experience, but ultimately it comes down to what works for the table as a whole and you individually.
I talked down a new player from making his PC grand ā he wanted to be a travelling bishop but then I reminded him that his character is level 1 cleric / level 6 bard. You can't have much character growth/development if you have already achieved a lot in your adventuring career already.

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
We have four different game channels to help you find a game.
⢠#750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.

is pushing an enemy off a cliff considered a bonus action or a whole action ?
if he can't defend
Action
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/combat#ShovingaCreature
Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If youāre able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the targetās Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
thank you

Ok
Thereās also an upcoming Learn To Play weekend happening at local game stores in the US and Canada.
So tonight, I played my first game in 25 years. The somewhat older group was super patient and I had a good time. I got to kill a few zombies with my battle axe and make a few gold. š
hell yea!!! i love to hear it, glad you had a good time friend <3

Can you make a melee weapon attack and still keep concentration on a spell?
yes
you only break concentration when you cast another concentration spell, or you take damage and fail your concentration check (constitution save) or fail any concentration check your DM may call for, or fall unconscious....there may be others but those are the big ones
not sure about RAW but I imagine you would also lose concentration if you failed a save against a strong charm spell or dominate person
good to know
Core Rulebook p203, reasons to lose concentration:
- casting another spell that requires concentration
- taking damage and failing the concentration check (constitution save)
- being incapacitated or killed
- DM calling for a concentration check (constitution save) and you failing it (such as due to environmental phenomena like a wave hitting you)
charm/dominate doesn't incapacitate you, just changes your point of view on who is a friend or not.
It's entirely clear what prompts a concentration save. It's not really a matter of opinion.
Wait so you can cast non concentration spells which maintaining concentration?
Correct
That's nice
about?
The argument
Short version:
One person believes that Artificers should each be uniquely individual in what they know for spells because "engineers specialize".
Nobody else is buying it.
Arguments appear all around that.
Don't worry about it.

At its simplest, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
Most of you play the part of a single character in that story. You have a character sheet that explains what your character can do.
One of you plays as the Dungeon Master, who guides the story and introduces obstacles for the players.
When a character wants to attempt something, you often roll dice to judge whether it succeeds.
Thereās a short interactive adventure here if you want a more practical demonstration.

So as a Dm helping a player build a character what out of wizard, warlock, and sorcerer would be easier to play
I think I'd rank warlock, then sorcerer, then wizard as far as level of complexity to understand progresses.
So warlock for new players
Itās all subjective. I always tell people the best choice is whatever they find interesting.
Hello everyone. I've played a couple small dungeons and started getting into a larger world with ny nephew as our dm. I then moved to Oklahoma and now my 12 year old son is getting into dnd. I'm pretty excited to get to learn and see how others dm and play so that we can find like minded players at some point and get some fun going. Don't be surprised if you see me asking alot of questions hahaha
I would say wizard is more forgiving, actually, since youāre not stuck with your choice of spells compared with the others, but thatās just me.
Anyone need a ranger

This is overwhelming, for a about 2 years iāve been wanting to play and iāve just joined this server, hope i can find a game online if thatās possible, but I donāt know terribly much.
Any good places to find one shots for new players?
Check out the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then maybe watch some shows of people playing the game (remember that some shows are more for entertainment than teaching the rules but it should get you a feel for how the game may play).
Then maybe try your hand at creating a character.
Then find a group to play with.

so im a player and im looking for people to play with. how would i find them?
Welcome! Check the two posts above. āš»
thanks
To be fair, I mean the looking for group channels feel like theres never any one shots or anything there for me.
You could try #looking-for-community. Thereās a number of community sites that regularly host one-shots.
What are West Marches?
Itās a community-style game where a large number of DMs and players all share the same world. Sessions happen regularly, but with different members of community at each one.
I see.
People just jump in when theyāre available.

hey, im v v v v v new to dnd. if I got digital content on dnd beyond, Im not sure how to actually access it, its an adventure. if anyone could point me in the right direcrtion Id be grateful. Ive got a campaign and character set up already
I guess so? I kind of wanted to set myself up for me and my brother
When you buy content on DnDBeyond you can use it in the character builder, read it online, and access in the mobile app.
DnDBeyond does not provide a virtual tabletop surface like say Roll20 or Owlbear.Rodeo if that's what you were looking for.
youd be surprised how hard it is to find somewhere that says that. thanks again, I think Ill just have to go to roll20
I suggest checking out Owlbear.Rodeo - I find it easier to use than Roll20.
You can still use DnDBeyond alongside it.
One for running the characters and checking the rules/adventures.
Owlbear for maps/tokens
what could be the best feat for a rogue ?
Hi, I am new to DND and I was looking for a campaign to play with me and my brother tonight

same here but i need soemone to play a campaign with
If you scroll up here, these are the channels we have to help you find games
I am just joined here not even readed rules and .. yet but I will maybe tomorrow
Just looking for someone to talk about some fantasy stories and yeah
well
I guess no one is around
Guess Imma goin to get some sleep its 5 am here already and still bored
So the people I played with told me that most groups require you to act in-character. What if I'm not very good at not breaking character?
I don't think I've ever heard that as a requirement. But every dm runs their table differently. Just communicate your expectations
Thanks
is dnd fun
I think it is.
Why is that?
Finding a game is one of the more difficult parts of the hobby, let alone finding one last minute. That's not to say it can't happen, just not likely
I see, alright.
Because D&D is a game which requires people to run it and people to play it which requires people to have mutually agreeable schedules.
D&D isn't run by computers, so there isn't some server to queue into like a mmorpg server and people aren't just sitting around 24/7 waiting to run a game.
Am I allowed to ask someone to review my character and see what they thing? First time making one so I wanted to know if I did it right. haha..
We have #character-discussion for exactly that!
oo thank you for telling me.
Does paladin spells use wisdom?
Charisma!
If you look through the class features, it tells you underneath the spellcasting ability header
Thanks
Is this for DND beyond
This is for new to D&D folks
Sorry but we're do I talk to someone about dnd beyond
If you're having technical issues we have #ddb-support
For other DnDBeyond stuff it may fit under the other channels if it's more general D&D questions/discussions.
Ok thanks
I have my first DnD session tomorrow, made my character on DnDBeyond DM said it looks good. Any last minute advice?
Have fun!
how does one dnd?
Like how does D&D work?
Do you have a copy of the rules yet?
^^^
I think technically you can still make a character without the playerās handbook but the book helps out a lot
I am gonna be blunt and say I have nothing nowhere at all except a youtube video of bad dnd players that made the game look fun
Well the Playerās Handbook is basically the starting point for a lot of newcomers, but I could tell you how to find a group of your own. Maybe theyād have a book you can borrow
my DM seems really nice and im meeting him like 45 minutes before tomorrow to do quick run down, but just wanted some quick tips or advice if possible
I think it is possible to play without it though, just a bit rocky
Advice on what?

Me forgetting that ?new exists
anything that comes to mind
The basic rules contains all the necessities
Think of it this way, basic rules are like the demo. It teaches you how to play but doesn't give you all the options. The players handbook is the full game (for players, dms should also eventually invest in the monster manual and dungeon masters guide) and then the other rules books (xanathars, tashas, and monster of the multiverse) are dlc
Donāt stress it, RP might be new to you and the rules are definitely new to you so itās fine to screw up sometimes
I think the RP aspect is going to be the harder selling point for me, I dont think I have that big creative mindset for all of it
Thatās fine! Depending on the DM, some donāt run RP-heavy campaigns
Everyone starts somewhere
You donāt even have to voice-act, you could just say āmy character does this and thatā
I think thats what I planned on doing
But yeah, what dunl said
any tips for RP?
How do I find a campaign

I did pick some of the ones that it offered
I do think it does take some time to get a feel for it though, since youāre essentially acting as a different personality
yeah
Iām currently doing a session where everyone (including myself and excluding the DM) is brand new to D&D, but we recently had our 3rd session and it kinda feels like everyone is playing as themselves or basing their characters on themselves instead of acting or thinking as their character would, do you know how I can encourage my party to try to separate themselves from their characters? (If that makes any sense)
Hmmm, very good question. RP is not my expertise but I could think about it a bit
Thanks, I love the role play aspect of D&D but I feel like my party is kinda missing it
Then again, itās everyoneās first time so I understand why
In the end I think the DM is the best person to bring out the RP within the players, but Iāve got a few things
Maybe ask them in-character about their backstories?
Itās like midnight here, so sorry if Iām starting to become incoherent
Iāve tried doing that but then they just start reciting whatās on their sheets, again itās everyoneās first time so I understand, itās just a little irritating when the DM sets up something great for the role play and we just kinda blow through it
Same lol, it took me so long to type that for no reason other than itās late š
Part of me thinks they might not be comfortable with RP yet, which makes sense since first-timers
Iām also running a game for a group of first-timers and itās a mixed bag for me, some of them are great and some are still getting into it
Thatās probably what it is
Solution might be time I guess
Iām sure the fact that itās all over discord calls doesnāt help, since most of us have terrible connection or a lot going on at home
Probably
This is a fair point, though itās the opposite for my group (and me as a DM too). Sort of the nervousness factor of having to look everyone else in the eyes as you RP
Yeah I can understand that, but then again itās easier to join in if you can see the person next to you or in front of you getting into it, at least itās easier than hearing it on a call while trying to drown out screaming siblings or cutting out mics š
I guess itās a personal thing ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Do your players have backstories for their characters?
Yes and no š
what is the yes, what is the no?
They have general ideas
Here is what I suggest for backstories:
- What did you do before you became an adventurer?
- Why did you become an adventurer?
- What do you want to get out of adventuring? (ie: what are your future plans as an adventurer?)
Then I tell the players to spend no more than a paragraph on each answer. Believe it or not, in writing restricting the writer to shorter answers requires more thought than rambling answers do. :)
Some of them have a decent backstory, some are getting there, and some just threw something together mid session
And with those three answers more questions can follow.
It also saves me from reading a player's (usually rambling) novel about their character. :D
For example, our wizards backstory was that he was INSANELY addicted to alcohol, to the point to where he could only understand the spells he was casting when he was drunk, and at first it was hilarious because he quite literally ran at a dragon yelling āI FOUND SHELTERā because a tavern was directly beneath it
I personally ask for bullet points
But then when it came to roll play she didnāt really do anything
Yeah, that is another thing I don't recommend, critical issues like that.
Some folks just aren't roleplayers. They are either in their shell or they don't have it in them to "act". I will try to entice such players but ultimately, I don't force it on them either.
I ask what they want out of the game...if it is RP...then RP it is, if it is combat, then combat it is.
Oo I like these questions, I think that will help
(and any mix in-between of course)
Yeah thatās true
I would really recommend any player coming up with "I am addicted to..." "I have suffered this..." etc, to not.
Once a player submitted a backstory that caused me to expel the player from my group. It was dark and had explicit stories that were extremely not PG, and for some folks would be very triggering.
They did it without seeking permission about that in advance, just dropped it on us.
That sucks
I'm old, I can handle it...but not everyone in my groups are old like I am.
I donāt think she was going for that, I think she was really going for the hilariously reckless comic type of alcoholic, not the real life kind
For example, one of my groups is my sister's kids. Thankfully it wasn't that particular group. But the group that did get hit by this were a bunch of 20 somethings. They didn't want to deal with that.
Sure, I get that...a drunken monk style thing (but wizard).
Just make sure you and they have a conversation about that, nail down expectations, penalties, etc.
Gotcha
Yes. Session 0 and setting expectations is a must
What does a dice with the letter d on it next to stealth mean
On D&D Beyond? It means you have disadvantage on stealth checks. Mostly happening when you wear armor that gives disadvantage
Do people actually look for players on this I've checked so many sites like reddit or Facebook and so on for some games and there all posts for years agošlmao
What?
there are a bunch of DM's looking for players in #looking-for-players here.
Thanksš I'm still pretty new to dnd so I'm just looking for people to play with lol
Finding a group can be the biggest hurdle to D&D so I wish you luck^^
Also check places where you plan on playing. Such as your local game stores if you plan on playing irl, or the various Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc. if you plan on playing on one of those.
Some VTTs have searching for games services or forums.
@fresh plaza oh awesome thx for the info, I'll probably try and stick to discord tho and don't have a vtt thx tho and I'll def be looking inš
That will make your search more difficult. As a guess, I would guess that discord only play is more rare than using a VTT.
As for not having a VTT, there are free ones, you don't need to buy them or anything.
Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are two free ones (Roll20 is freemium, but free is good enough for players)
@fresh plaza ok then I'll def download and figure out things, I have tried locally a couple times but it ends up being a start to a big campaign and ends up only having the one session which is why I'm so new lol š
Neither are programs, they are both browser based.
Does anyone have any pdfs for character sheets-? All of the ones I can find online have no lines like the players handbook does
I'd love it if you could hook me up with sheets as well. Sorry to bump in Cutie
There arent any lines on the bigger boxes for that one though, thats what im looking for
Just draw them?
Thatās kinda my backup plan, but my lines arent the greatest
Use a ruler?
Unnecessary math and making sure its perfect
Why would you need to do math?
Measuring by centimetres or however I want it spaced. Anyways, when Level up and get more HP for a sorcerer, is it 1d6 + my constitution modifier? Or am I reading the PHB wrong
Yep, 1d6+ con mod per level up for sorc
You can also choose the average (4) if you don't want to roll 1d6 and risk that 1.
Yeah
When you lvl up, you roll 1d6 and add your Con mod or take the average of 4 + Con mod
Getting a 17 as a stat roll isnt a re-roll, right? It feels like cheating qvq
19 charisma at lvl 1 feels like cheating
If you chose to roll for stats with 4d6d1 or 3d6, 18 is the highest you can roll
I have +2 to charisma due to being a teifling
There are no official reroll rules for ability scores
So it is possible to start with 20 in a stat.
(also possible to start with a 3 and be cursed >.>)
If you're rolling for ability scores and you roll an 18 and you get a +2 to that ability score, then yes, you can start with a 20
I'm aware, yes.
There's no other official ability score generation way to get a 20 in an ability score as a lvl 1 character
Didn't say that there was.
Said that 18 is the highest you can roll, so it is possible to start with a 20.
What do hit dice do
Lmao sorry for the stupid asf question but its confusing to me
Hitdice are the 1d6 thing you rolled for sorc. But you can also use them on short rests to recover health
Ohh I seee
So basically, when you take a short rest, you can roll one or more of your hit dice to recover hit points
So at level 3 you'll have 3d6 HD. Meaning you can roll 1d6+con three times on a short rest to recover.
You'll recover spent HD on a long rest.
Thank you, I was thinking roll to hit d20 for that and was confused at why id need to note it down on a character sheet š
Half
Half is a common houserule I think?
A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a Short Rest, up to the characterās maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the characterās level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the characterās Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below.
Oh my bad:
At the end of a Long Rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the characterās total number of them (minimum of one die).
If I have an odd number like 7 and im told to get half, would I get 3 or 4
Rule of thumb in D&D is round down. Very few things are rounded up
Good to know
Round Down
Thereās one more general rule you need to know at the outset. Whenever you divide a number in the game, round down if you end up with a fraction, even if the fraction is one-half or greater.
Average HP for PCs (Like 4 for sorcs on a d6) is one of the few unspoken exceptions.
Iām a lil new to dnd can someone explain the basics to me

how can i determine my spells slots and how many spells I know if I multiclass from a non magical class to a magical one ?
nonmagical classes don't add spells slots.
You add together the effective levels of your spellcasting classes. If a class doesn't have spells, nothing to add. :)
so i would have to take the magical class spell slots that are available at level 1 in this case ?
yes
okay thanks
Can you make unarmed strikes with legs or only fists?
For example, can a monk with two weapons equipped still do their extra unarmed strike?
Iāve been playing for like 5 weeks max, and i still donāt understand most things
such as ?
any bodypart really. CRB p.195 states a punch, kick, headbutt, or similar blow.
Nice, thanks
mostly spell stuff
And also character creation, itās quite irritating even after making 4 characters
3 or 4
ask questions, people will explain :)
what does hit dice mean
I really want a players handbook but i donāt have that kinda money lol
is it worth it
hi, i'm new too. just finished my character but not sure how to play either
how do i create a character?
it's on the D&D website
ok
just hit create character, it's quite detailed
i just used dnd beyondās character creator and printed out the finished sheet
Here is a link to terminology that may help: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1026-common-terms-new-dungeons-dragons-players-should
"Hit Dice: The die you roll to increase your hit point maximum when you level up. You also have a number of hit dice equal to your level that you can expend to regain hit points during a short rest."
Basically, hit dice is only used when you level up, and when you take short rests.
this is useful, thanks
my hit dice is 11d8 i think, does that mean i roll 11 dice to upgrade my hp
No, it means you have up to 11 hit dice to spend to heal up with when you take a short rest.
When you gain a level you gain a 12th hit die and roll a d8 (plus constitution modifier) for more hit points.
Apollo, you are starting at level 11?
there's this guided interactive play, useful for total newbies. i'm doing it now
what sould i put in "faith"?
i didn't put anything, and it worked
don't think it's necessary
after finishing your character, you should try this, really helpful. it's like gameplay
Faith is not mechanically required - it's more for flavor and role-playing opportunities.
i finish my first character
nice, use that link if you want a guided gameplay
ok
any dungeon masters around, or other newbies that want to play?
i am interested, i just finished the begginners course
so what do i do now?
Well, I'm a noobie who has only played one game
But I was planning to learn the rules more before I do anything
i'm still reading a lot about it. but i'd like an actual gameplay, to see how it goes
If you know the rules, especially how to create a character, you should look for a game/group.

How usefull is multiclassing or even trippleclassing ?
It can be very useful, but if youāre new to the game, it can result in rendering your character ineffective. Check in with #character-discussion for more on multiclassing talk.
You don't get your classes' capstone ability. Also, you delay getting your ASI.
If you're new to D&D it can get more confusing as you need to learn (and master) two classes instead of one.
Are ASI that usefull ? for example as a 1 level in rougue i would get an additional skill
Yea its my second character. First one died kinda quick haha
ASI gives you either 2 points to your ability scores or a feat.
Should I replace the magic missile spell with scorching ray?
does the DM decide of the DC when you try to hide ?
or is it like a formula in the rules ?
The DM decides what rules are in effect given the context and sets the DC for any skill checks.
Okay thanks
When you take the Hide action, you make a Dexterity (Stealth) check in an attempt to hide. When a creature can't see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it.
So in this case the PC tries to hide (needs to make sense to be possible), the PC makes a dexterity stealth check, and any enemies that try to see it would make a perception (or possibly investigation) check.
Something along those lines
If the creatures you're trying to hide from aren't actively looking, then the DC would be their Passive Perception

I don't quite understand the "Increase your Strength or Dexterity score by 1, to a maximum of 20." of the Athlete feat
Does it mean you can increase Strength or Dexterity by 1 every level ?
If so, does it apply the moment you take the feat ?
I believe it means that you add the +1 only once to the chosen stat, unless it specifies otherwise
at level 5, with Surge and extra attack
does it mean I can
Attack with a weapon --> Attack with the other weapon as a bonus action (because light weapon) --> Attack with a weapon with Surge --> Attack with a weapon with Extra attack ?
You would attack twice as your first Action then as a bonus action, then two more attacks as part of Action Surge (which gives you an Action).
so the Extra Attack would come in first ?
Yes.
Yeah, the extra attack allows you to do two attacks as part of your action
so i could attack 5 times ?
If you use action surge yeah
but then why "to a maximum of 20" ?
Your stats can't exceed 20 under ordinary circumstances.
oh I get it
so let's imagine I have a 20 in STR and 17 in DEX
I xould have to put the +1 in Dex
because my STR stat is already maxed out
Yep.
Yeah
