Okay i submitted it
Now what
Do i just wait?
Yes.
Or start looking through #looking-for-players and see if there’s a game already on offer that interests you.
Does the extra attack feature work with spells?
Or is casting a spell a different kind of action?
Yes you can only cast one spell, the attack action only gives you 2 weapon attacks with extra attack
Ok.
Can a construct such as a stone golem attune to a magic item
Yes
How does EXP work
As your character goes on adventures and overcomes challenges, he or she gains experience, represented by experience points. A character who reaches a specified experience point total advances in capability. This advancement is called gaining a level.
The DM rewards Experience Points based on how the party handles situations, including destroying/killing monsters. But it can also include social encounters, solving puzzles, traveling wildernesses, etc. The experience points are divided evenly among all party members. Characters can level up based on if they have enough XP for the next level.
Or yeah, what spamandtuna posted!
This table shows how many points you need to reach each level:

What are some beginner classes in dnd and what are some good races for those classes?
There really is no bad race/class combo.
Just pick what seems the most fun to you and go from there
Martials (fighter, rogue, barbarian, and monk) do have a smaller learning curve compared to the spellcasting classes, but all classes are doable with some guidance.
@harsh fjord gotta get that extra d4, it makes everything easier
Looking for a group or person to help me get started with D&D. I have a character made, would like to use TTS if possible. Thanks in advance for any help or tips.
Are chessex dice good?
I don’t know.
Have you ever seen bad dice though?
Idk
Dope pfp pic, and a mod is about to answer your question I think.

You can actually run the /looking-for <type> commands from any channel (or so I've heard from another mod). That said we'd prefer folks use the #1075498333705089084 channel for it.
(those commands help users create posts and their attached threads in the looking-for channels)
Ah, ok.
most dms have their own character creation rules so you might not be able to use your created at a new table
Best to have a few loose ideas for characters, IMO, then work with the DM to pick one that fits and finalize it.
That said, there are definitely DMs who will accept pre-made characters, too.
With maybe a few adjustments.
hey there... I'm trying to think of a name for my character, the race I am is human variant
Think of a human name.
Countless generators for countless names. Some say it's the best fantasy name generator site around, which is very humbling to hear.
You could also head to #ddb-avrae-commands and type !name human

Is eldritch knight and arcane tricker good?
sure
Hey quick question! Im playing my first campaign as a dwarf fighter and I just leveled to 6 and I can unlock a new feat. Anyways what’s a good feat for 5e that can maximize my character? My pc is kind of the tank of the group since we don’t have a barbarian.
I would head to #1045165827068002374
can enemies still hit the players after they fall unconscious ?
Yes. The DM decides how enemies operate and whether they leave unconscious PCs alone or attack them while they're down.
Tbh, dnd intimidates me, but the game also looks so cool, so…
At some point later on, could someone help show me the ropes? Stuff like the rules, character creation, what is good to know, etc. maybe even run a sort of tutorial campaign with me and maybe some other friends of mine who want to learn
Feel free to ping or PM me with responses cause this popular of a server will mean I may lose this message

Okiedokie, I will be sure to read over it, then when I finish maybe I will see if I can get a tutorial mission going to serve as a final exam of sorts
I wanna make some friends to be honest as well
I think I already made a character on DnDB, but I might make a few more for the sake of backups and ol’reliables or alternate worlds or whatever
And with those other stuff like the basic rules and the YouTube videos, I will listen through them while doing my morning routine tomorrow
Oh my... Thanks so much!!! Been looking everywhere for concise info
😮💨 Spent 20 minutes refilling my character sheet over and over cuz the online app keeps deleting any new information I write when I leave the tab
hey idk what the hell im doing but im trying to search for a dnd session that i dont have to speak with voice because of my living situation. im really new

There are text-only / PBP games out there that wouldn’t require voice.
They’re not quite as common, though, so you’ll have to keep an eye out.
Hi! Does anyone know if Roll20 mobile is viable?
Like, can I use it to play with those using the browser version?
Nope, roll20 is not designed to be used on mobile devices
It doesn't work well at all on phones or tablets
Roll20 on mobile is basically unusuable. 😬
From my experience: sometimes the map won't show, you can't scroll the map if it does appear, you can't click on tokens or move them, and if you're using video/audio in-app, I find these issues get even worse/more unstable.
There's a mobile app, but that just shows your sheet and allows you to push macros/dice rolls to the desktop app.
The D&D Beyond mobile app offers the same broad functionality as the desktop app
If you are looking for a VTT that works on mobile, I would check out owlbear.app
Thankyou
Yeah, owlbear works pretty well on mobile.
https://www.owlbear.app/
(I prefer it to Roll20 overall, tbh.)
owlbear is rather light and wont do much with mechanics, its usually paired with a discord bot like avrae to handle that side of things. It is however a fantastic super light-weight battlemap.
I do indeed use Avrae, too.
Same. But I'm able to run it all from my phone
wait, owlbear is essentially just for maps right
Yes
Yup, it's a virtual table top
Good afternoon, I’m very new to DND and looking for beginner friendly games online, UK based
Check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
i'm a new DM and i'm looking for a way to reward a paladin, because the wizard learned like 10 spells in the last campaign
What level?
level 2
The wizard learned 10 new spells at level 1?
wizard is already level 2 but he learned the spells bc the campaign said that he can copy the runes
Copy runes? You the DM give out what new spells a wizard can get via wizard spell scrolls and spellbooks they stumble upon.
The PC wizard doesn't decide what new spells they learn, except the ones when they gain a new level.
no the player didn't choose em but the campaign said that you get they got the book that contains these spells
Ah okay.
Anyway, the Lost Mine of Phandelver has a nice magic longsword (||Lightbringer||) my own paladin has.
yea we are playing lost mines but they were looking for a side quest so i started an one shot called Grammys country apple pie
It also contains a small
spellbook - more like a spell notebook -
containing the few spells that old Grammy knew:
Druidcraft, Entangle, Purify Food and Drink, and
Speak with Plants.
this is what it said for the spells + there were 2 other spells
Those spells aren't wizard spells though, they're druid spells.
The wizard won't be able to learn them.
The optional class features from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything can make for good early-level rewards, too.
but when can the paladin get the sword? i mean at what point of the story
Perhaps let's move this to #dm-discussion because we're entering spoiler territory
#1029833015423143957 for adventure spoilers, not dm-discussion
ok
#1029835597168267384 specifically.
Any tips for getting over general shyness when it comes it joining a campaign? I'm a new player, and i find it really daunting engaging in something i'm pretty new to. I just rather not disappoint other players, or the DM.
Two schools? You can only choose one sub-class
That sounds like either a misunderstanding of the rules or a significant amount of homebrew
The wizard class picks one subclass (school) at level 2. A wizard starts off knowing 6 spells at level 1, gains 2 spells each level, and can also copy spells from spellbooks and scrolls
Hello there- I recently started making small progress to starting DnD and I'm a bit lost on how I can actually set things up- Seeing others use fancy maps and a lot of other things feels a bit overwhelming so I'm not sure what's manditory for playing, and what is just the DMs choice- Is the map with grid essential? Are there any other things I need to properly play?
You may want to ask in #dm-discussion
I see, thank you :)
There was some confusion it sounded like, the sheet only allowed me to pick evocation so I was told I pick more later or something
I assume you're using D&D Beyond?
Yeah
You can only pick Evocation because that's the only free subclass
You have to pay for the rest, or have them shared with you by someone who has paid for them
If im starting at level 3, could I have 8 1st level spells and 2 2nd levels?
Correct
👍
Maps are useful because they give everyone a shared reference for where things are in-game, but they're definitely not necessary. In fact, they're technically the variant option in the rules; the default is to play without it.
There's some helpful articles here if you want to try playing without a map:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/theater-of-the-mind
Are you playing with strangers or do you feel this when playing with friends?
I haven't played whatsoever, and nobody i know is interested in this sort of thing. I have dabbled with general information but nothing past that. The internet is probably my best bet on finding a group.
same
I guess there are several tacks you can take here:
- You can try to do whatever's in your comfort zone. You can play with others without cameras if that suits you. You can play using text only. If you know your preferences, you can lean into them; odds are good you can find others who want to play the way you do.
- You can push outside of that. Googling for 'tips to overcome shyness' gives you some starters, but adapting one's personality, even in a specific setting, takes time and effort. Don't expect it'll happen all at once. You might try a one-shot (a game that only lasts for a single session) as a way to feel out how to behave. If it's feeling silly roleplaying, there are guides for dealing with that, and you can just practice alone to stretch those metaphorical muscles.
- Remember that it's a game. People show up to it to have fun. So the only way you let folks down is if you ruin that, and it's generally easy to avoid if you communicate and respect each other. If you're express that you're new and feel anxious, you may be surprised by how far folks will go to try and make you feel comfortable/welcome.
There's no silver bullet, alas, but hopefully some of that is helpful.
If your shyness is specifically camera- or voice-related, there are text-only campaigns you can join.
Thank you, i appreciate that.
Voice isn't an issue, i'm fairly big on roleplaying and even voice acting - although that isn't a norm here frankly and that's alright.
If you're concerned about other players/the DM being bothered, I say don't worry about that all. I've picked up a few hobbies over the years, and one consistent thing I've found across all of them is this - people love sharing things they enjoy with newcomers
I just started playing about a year ago, via a friend, but the DM and other players were all strangers to me. They were happy to welcome me in to the group, gave me some pointers on roleplaying and rules, etc. As long as you're making a good faith effort to learn the game and have fun, you'll be welcomed in. You can also look for one shot sessions to try out before jumping into a longer campaign

Yoo
yes
heya guys
Hello there. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧
anything happening?
Nothing much. Still learning about stuff before even thinking of conquering my inhibitions and try to join a game
same here
ive made a new character im exited to use, but 2 things
one i cant find a game to join
and two its backstory sounds unrealistic and confusing in some areas
I made one that has a weird backstory but no game to join either. Plus I think I made him more like a book character than a game character. 😅
lol
I found the guys active in the character discussion tab to be quite helpful straightening out any kinks in characterization
ah cool
They even helped me figure out my starting stats are aweful
but if i were to explain it they probably wouldve just been like "interesting, lets change it completely"
idk im both scared to get help but wanting help at the same time
Not really, bruh. How about I accompany you there and help figure it out?
just thinking about it i came up with another idea for the backstory that isnt how i made it earlier
makes a little more sense
Just remember, there are lots of strong opinions in that channel. If you wanna play a concept and they say no you will have more fun doing this, it's ok to say no thank you
Alrighty then ... Hopefully, we both can find games we can participate in. (ㆁωㆁ)

You use intelligence for your wizard spells and charisma for your bard spells, so you'll want to have decent stats in both :D
Hi! Starting off too. Made a character and reading a bit but still haven't played any yet
Are there any overlaps on that? What if it's a spell that can be done by both?
You cast the prepared spell based on the class. Your class' primary stat affects the spell DC though.
Completely new to DND, but wanna try it. I’ve been told again and again that it’s up my alley, I just don’t know where to start

Hey, an other new brave soul that want to venture into everything DnD has to offer, i am following the steps above from the bot to get started. But what do i do next? do i look for a community/guild? How can i best look for a game/session where i can learn the game and meet some new people/friends?
as there is the starting 6 spells + 2 per level for wizard, is there a similar rule for paladin spells?
No, the paladin class page tells you how many spells you can prepare

hi
Welcome!
how r u?
I am more or less I played with a few friends some time age
We have lots of useful resources in the pinned messages here on this channel - feel free to take a look. The free basic rules are also linked there.
ok awesome thanks!
So I’m new to d&d and want to learn pretty quick to help a group of friends to learn as well. they are interested in d&d and I figured I could be dm to help push things along but I don’t even know where to start. Everything seems overwhelming
I’ve bought the starter set and even made a character on d&d beyond’s website to use on my phone and also have the handbook but I just don’t know how to get things rolling should I go off of my head to make a campaign and use references for creatures and things from the handbook for like damage and armor and xp or should I go off campaigns in the books to start out with cuz even there I’m kinda lost
Hey I'm pretty new to DND and I've started playing a warlock in my first campaign. I am level 5 atm. One of my main problems is warlocks having only 2 spell slots. Ik you can get them after a short rest but In battle only two spell slots just limits the stuff you could do. Is there anyway to regain spell slots using magic items and stuff. Also are there like potions or other things that could give you a short rest without acc sitting there for an hour and getting one.
@feral horizon to make up for the limited spells slots warlocks get the strongest cantrip in the game known as eldritch blast spam that bad boy as much as possible.
Ask the dm and party for more short rests. Also they have those eldritch adaptation thingies that can boost your character and/or your blast. If you don't like the play style of warlock you can always ask to change your character or even consider multiclassing. Bards are a good choice for this.
how do you make a pet as an artificer? i wanna learn the class
I believe you can either take the find familiar spell, use artillerist’s Eldritch cannon, use the Battle Smith’s steel defender, or take the homunculus infusion.
I see that Mage Slayer is in the PHB but I don't find it
wdym*?*
can i like
make a gun?
magic bullets
I don't really know if it's a feat or a background
it's a feat yes, but it's not very good*?* course, if you like it, who am i to stop you from getting it
but I don't find it in the PHB
Can you post a link to a screenshot of it? hard to help if we dont see what you are seeing (or..not seeing at this point
)
Okay, that is the feat yes, but that doesnt help. A screenshot of your character going over the feats for your character. Which I assume is what you want to add in dnd beyond? Do you have a character ready?
As in the physical copy or the pdf?
Um... Hi. Having trouble understanding feats. How does one get feats and how are they assigned? Is it innate or do we get more as characters grow?
Anyone here running a 24/7 pbt community or group?
you must be reading the basic rules which doesn't include feats
hard for me to find a group to play in
feats are taken in lieu of ability score improvements. at every level your class gets an ability score improvement, you can take a feat instead. some races like the variant human and custom lineage also give you a feat at character creation, and certain backgrounds grant you access to certain feats as well
lol i got my name changed
eh idc i made that name as a joke i wasnt expecting it to stay forever

if you play d&d in 2-3 hours, can you also call me and teach me how to play? i mean i understand the game if i play it and is someone who knows the game and is able to teach me
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube
Both are linked above.
ok
good evening guys, new player here seeks to join a D&D game , I'amanewbie but i did two weeksreading and watching how videos on how to start a game
Welcome!
im in the same boat
Nice now i don't feel alone
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
yes all of it
Any questions you’ve got?
so far so good, i even started working on several character sheets
Nice!
Hi? Um... I have a question about cantrips, spellcasting, and clerics
Ask away! This channel is to help new players out.
Um... I got confused about the description in the book
Which spell are you confused about?
Do I choose whatever cantrip I learn or is it more of a list that I can prepare? While looking at the spell list in dndb, It showed that I have spells I didn't know about... And are spell slots more like just stuff I could do?
At level 1 a cleric knows three cantrips. You pick those three cantrips.
Ahh... Can I change them whenever or do I need to ask my dm about it?
Hi everyone I am new to this group and I want some guidance
Do we have any section in which we have stories for our dnd games
Any section in which there are stories?? Already prepared ones??
You can't change those out until you level up. Ask your DM if they allow the change at other times, such at a long rest.
Um... There's some on tales from the table
Like game ideas? We have #dm-discussion for talking shop among Dungeon Masters
Thank you!!!
Thank you brother
If you’re looking for stories shared by other people about their adventures you’d want #tales-from-the-table
If you’re looking for published adventures you can find them on D&D Beyond, your local bookstore,or game shop, or DMsguild.
If you’re looking for a game to join then you’ll want to read #find-a-game
You can also look into prewritten modules that have stories, characters and quests.

Hello
Hi, I’ve never played a game but I’ve read a bunch of manuals, hoping to find a group online. Great to meet you all!
We are practically the same hahaha
I've been wanting to join a campaing since i was a kid
Same
Hey I'm DMing my first game for a few friends and I need a little advice on how to perhaps introduce a secondary villain
yo, im a new dm and i wanna shill.
i wanna put out there my game for people to join. what do i gotta doo?
Head to #find-a-game for how to post in #looking-for-players
That's vague. The more details then we can give you a non-vague answer.
it was vague because I'm new here and don't know how things work here.
So I've decided on a sort of frozen setting with an Aboleth as the main villain because I thought it was unique and interesting and not a super common choice. But I've realised that there's probably a few sessions until they get to any real combat.
So I was thinking of introducing a bounty hunter to track one of the party members, which links to his backstory he's given me.
What I want to do, is have the bounty hunter as a secondary threat that eventually falls to the Aboleths corrupting presence. But I'm not sure of an organic way to introduce the bounty hunter and I don't want him to detract from the main story.
Head on over to #dm-discussion
aww curse's i was still reading that @cobalt frigate
Cheers
My response wasn't to you.
oh
I haven't ever played DnD, but I want to get into it, where should I start?

okay, thanks
How do you make/play a alchemist?
There's the artificier alchemist sub-class.
Playstyle would depend on how you want to play it
There's the Beast Master subclass for Ranger, from the Player's Handbook.
Okay I still don't understand one part of this game
How do you know how much xp a player has
The DM awards XP as the party accomplishes certain tasks.
Most commonly, by defeating monsters.
So it is totally the dms decision how much xp a certain action gives?
The players just keep a running total of how much they've earned.
Is there any class that lets you have pets that u can fight with
Beastmaster Ranger, certain summoning spells (temporary)
Thank you
It's the DMs choice whether they even award XP for non-combat encounters.
But the DMG says this:
As a starting point, use the rules for building combat encounters in chapter 3 to gauge the difficulty of the challenge. Then award the characters XP as if it had been a combat encounter of the same difficulty, but only if the encounter involved a meaningful risk of failure.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#ExperiencePoints
A pokemon
So i can be a beast master ranger with summon spells?
Is tiping
Alternatively, you can just use milestone leveling, where you just have the party gain a level when they reach a significant milestone in the game.
(Which is generally the more common method nowadays.)
Yeah, you can.
Xp sounds more fun really gives you a rpg vibe
There's also Circle of the Shepherd Druid if you want to focus on summoning.
Oooo
There's Drakewarden Ranger, Wildfire Druid, Battle Smith Artificer that all get "pets".
Swarmkeeper Ranger
What type of summons are there
I think there's spells for just about every creature type.
Alright thank you
How many can be summoned at once
Beasts, fiends, undead...
So don't players unlock stuff at certain levels?
The spell will state how much are summoned. Also the DM can decide what exactly gets summoned.
The folks in #1045165827068002374 could probably give you a theoretical max limit.
Thank you
Yeah, each time they reach a new level -- whether you're using XP or milestone -- they'll typically unlock new abilities.
This table shows how much total XP you'd need to reach each level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
And then each class has a table that shows what they get at each level.
Is this in the player handbook?
I recently got it
Alright thank you
Actually, literally the end of it.
Nervous to play - any advice for a newbie?
Any particular part you’re nervous about?
Is ranger supposed to feel this weak? I’m new and feel weak compared to my party
How so?
What classes are good for water and earth Genasi or Dragonborn i’m a beginner, so I’m looking for a class
What do you feel like playing? A martial melee class? An arcane spellcasting? A ranged martial?
More Melee focussed class
Earth genasi get a bonus to Strength which makes them good for any class that wants to fight up close. Water genasi get a Wisdom boost which is better for monks, druids, and clerics who key off that ability score.
I'm gonna be super honest. The way 5e was designed, there really isn't a bad race/class combo. Don't limit yourself and play what you want
Dragonborn can fit any class well. If you use the new Dragonborn stats that let them use their breath weapon in the Attack action they excel in fighter-type classes like barbarian, fighter, and paladin.
But really, you can make any combo work. Especially if you use the rule that lets you pick any ability score boost.
Play what you thematically want to play.
On DND beyond I have a hit dice of 2d6 and a constitution modifier of 1 but it's showing my max health as 12 instead of 14. Did I just misunderstand how constitution and hit dice work or did I do something wrong?
At level 1, your hp is maxed out — 6 (HD) + 1 (Con modifier) = 7. At level 2 you get another d6 HD plus 1 (Con modifier). So that's a minimum of 9 hp and a maximum of 14. However the average for a d6 is 3, so your average hp at level 2 is 11.
Hey
I am a newbie
How do I play dnd
I mean i know the rules and game plays but i don't have anyone to play

My apologies then, sorry. Which channel is?
What is homebrewing?
#looking-for-community is the channel for looking for communities/servers.
I thought that was only for communites to post, not for players to ask for recommendations? But I might have missunderstood.
There are also other forums on roll20, startplaying, and Reddit.

Some advice for DM's holding an in-person session for the first time: Get a good Pokerface or hide behind your DM screen. You don't want to give away something bad by letting players see your look of sadistic glee.
Counterpoint: let them see the smile and dread what is coming
A viable alternative. 😈

I am like brand new, I got a starter set off some weird crackhead looking mf. Thinking of DM'ing for my first time.
Should I use a setting book or my own imagination for the first game?
Any recommendations
The Starter Set is set in the Forgotten Realms, however, you're not bound to use it. That said, you can homebrew your own campaign setting but that takes much more time and effort.

Would anyone know a good Bonus Cantrip as a Beginner dnd player? (Im a Wood Elf Druid)
two excellent cantrips for druids: Magic Stone and Shillelagh.
How is Magic stone useful? I dosnt sound to be
1d6+wisdom damage? very useful
If by "Bonus Cantrip," you mean that your DM is offering you an extra cantrip beyond what you're normally allowed, I'd recommend taking somethign that's off the druid list (if that's an option)
Magic Stone is an excellent spell:
Bonus action to cast, so you can cast it and then throw a stone (action) that round.
Uses wisdom to attack and 1d6+wisdom damage, which means it uses a Druids best stat for both attack and damage.
I believe you can also use the stone from Magic Stone in a sling, no?
yup, which then includes the sling's magic bonus if any.
and extends the range past 60' of course (although with disadvantage)
Why would it be at disadvantage if within the sling's normal range?
sling has a range of 30/120'
yeah, which means that 31-119' is normal range, no?
In any case, both Magic Stone and Shillelagh are excellent for Druids due to using Wisdom to attack/damage.
Ill look into it then, thank you :]
Also, Magic Stone creates THREE stones with a single casting.
Which frees up bonus action economy in the next two rounds.
Rules already confusing
dw about the nitty gritty mechanics, for your first games just focus on describing how your character does something and let your DM handle the rolling and ruling
I'm dumb and didn't realize where we were lol
Um... What should I do with multiple consecutive horrible dice rolls?
Like, do I look for different dice apps or something? Cause the majority of it was below 10
luck is luck
were they physical dice?
Nope.
what dice roller?
Used dndb dice
I cannot speak to dnd beyond's dice roller, but I haven't ever heard it is biased. It is probably your bias rather than it's bias.
If someone, somewhere, didn't get a series of bad dice rolls then there WOULD be a problem
you got lucky to be the unlucky fellow who got the bad dice rolls
fun fact: most physical d20s don't roll true. They tend to roll 10-11 more often than other numbers.
The d&d beyond dice roller is a physics simulation.
Hi all, quick question: does adventurers league play a specific module, or are there different ones? Just trying to figure out what setting my character would be in when I join.
Most of the AL modules are set in the forgotten realms. But there is also mist hunters (which is Ravenloft) and Oracle of War (which is Eberron)
Thanks dunl, but I was mainly asking what would be played if I were to join an AL game next week. Is it a specific module, or any forgotten realms one? Is that up to the people at the store to decide?
For example, the wild beyond the witchlight
Yeah its gonna be up to the dm. I wanna say we are in season 12, that follows spelljammer.
But they also just released guidance to play the Dragonlance adventure in AL as well. So it's really up to the dm running
Good to know. Thanks much!
We also have #adventurers-league if you have more questions
Thanks for the clarification. Was just worried if it's me or if it was a glitch or something. In this case, it's definitely my extremely bad luck. XD
If playing XCOM has taught me anything, it’s that highly improbable occurrence are always a lot more likely than you think.
“95% chance to hit” usually feels like 75% chance to hit, even if it looks closer to 100% 😬
hi! i am very new to the dnd and I wanted to know where should I start because there is a lot of stuff. thanks!
i have a character but what should I do next? also I cant seem to get my character's HP above 1
Have you read any of the rules yet?
Why do DND players have so many sets of dice like when would u need 17 d6 (made up numbers)
Because it's fun collecting shiny math rocks
And I easily have a over a hundred d6. But I also come to d&d from wargaming
in 4+ decades of gaming Ive lost track of more dice than I still own, and I still have a shoebox full of dice
hey guys! i was wondering if i could get help with designing my first real character, im pretty new and just want to try and create a sci fi character thats not broken while still having some cool features gameplay and roleplay wise with the character.
Well, science fiction isn't really the standard of d&d. It's more sword and sorcery fantasy
artificer armorer, play Iron Man
What resources do you own?
nothing
i have dnd beyond and thats it haha
ive only played online
never in person
Especially for just getting started, I would stick with the options that you have access to on D&D beyond
its not the first time ive designed a character, just the first time i want to try designing a good character
usually i make characters that are either just unoriginal or just plain garbage
and i want to actually try this time
really most characters in 5e arent garbage, though they might need tweaking
Sounds like you want #1045165827068002374 then. But let's be honest, no on cares about originality. Chances are it's already been done
thanks for the info man
so state a desired concept, people will help
And yeah, the way 5e is designed, it's really hard to make a garbage character. You kinda have to go out of your way to do that
You trying to give the minmaxers an aneurysm?
a little bit yea
Hey y'all I'm new to this and I'ma be honest there's so much going on that idk where to start, could someone point me in the right direction lol

That's helpful thankyou
Hi! I'm a newcomer to DnD and wanted to follow some character making advice found on reddit. They are (for example) talking about taking the race "thiefling (winged)". I have not found any online or offline character generator software, that mentions the "winged" thiefling. Is that NOT a race or are all these character generator missing this/some content? Which character generator software is "the best" (I know, there is probably not such a thing) or the most complete? For example for Shadowrun there is Chummer5, which is pretty complete and covers all extenstions.
Or am I missing something and the winged thiefling is just a normal thiefling race wise and the winged comes in at a later stage in character generation?
I believe winged tieflings are from Sword Coast Adventuree's Guide if Im bot mistaken 🤔
Yup, on d&d beyond the winged tiefling are underneath variant tiefling
As far as character generators, d&d beyond is the official one
Ah okay. So I need to buy the sword coast adventures guide in dnd beyond to be able to use it in their charcter generator?
And if I just want to mess around with everything enabled to get a feeling what is available I have to buy the "all bundle" for $490?
Can you guys recommend another generator, that is more... accessable with some of the content?
You should be able to purchase it separately without having to purchase the while book.
But if there are any character generators out there that offer this content for free, it is pirated content
@stable hedge the other method is to find something you like in the homebrew section of dnd beyond or make your own but if you new i wouldnt try that just yet.
Thanks guys! So at least now I know what to look for (and NOT look for).
Also as a side Note, Not every DM allows the winged tiefling Variant in their table
@stable hedge no problem mate also if you looking for a game to join mine is very new player friendly so whenever you interested just message me.
I’m new and I think I’d be interested.
Actually will private message that way we don't clog the chat with messages
hello everyone 😄 i just joined, i am looking for a campaing i can join, i am new at this
Then if your happy with the rules go find a game, jump in enjoy the world
https://locator.wizards.com/ if you want to find a local store to ply in
omg thanks 😄
Any of them if your DM allows for moving ASIs.
ASI?
Ability score improvement
I actually like the sound of that lol
Also if you are asking your DM about movable ASIs, it's worth also asking about changing the spell casting ability for the innate spellcasting too
Sure you can 🙂
They certainly can
on the other hand: is it possible to make a wood elf warlock or there's a better options for wood elfs?
Ultimately if your DM allows you to use moveable ASIs on your race, then any race and class pairing will work fine
The design direction in recent years has been away from giving fixed ASIs to new race options and it is an optional rule to allow this for the races published with fixed ASIs
oh no you got it all wrong... I'm actually making my first official character to stick with
so i'm just asking for any possible combinations for a character
Why isn’t it recommended?
honestly i just looked it up, an air genasi actually suits a monk class due to a dex bonus from the air genasi
i Just rolled for my ability scores so i may need help
what rolls
I got dexterity bonus tho
+1 dex
ok
Why int they are playing a monk you want dex con then wisdom as your highest stats
16 for strength
14 for intelligence
12 for dex
12 for con
10 for rest
just my recommendations
ok thanks
you sure?
Your unarmoured defence is 10+dex+wisdom
i dont usually play monk so idk thats just what i would do
Your stunning strike you get at higher levels has a DC based on wisdom
so i should put 16 on dex then 14 on con?
yes
ok thanks man
Question are you joining a campaign ? Have you found a DM yet?
yeah, a friend of mine from belgium is being a DM and I'm gonna do a solo campaign with him tomorrow
are you in germany?
sweden
Strength 12, Dexterity 16, Con 12, Wisdom 14, Int/Cha 10
If using Monsters of the Multiverse Air Genasi then +2 Dex and +1 Wisdom
cool
👍 some DMs like to see the rolls you make for your stats but your friend should be ok with yours as they are sort of near point buy scores
Does it matter if it's monsters of the multiverse?
well, it affects ASI
Do you have the APP
app?
Is tortle different in monsters of the multiverse?
what that
dnd beyond app
Does anyone live in the GMT+2 timezone ?
ohhh
If using MotM or the TCE optional rule then the racial bonuses are different than the original Air Genasi
Yup. You can choose +2/1 or +1/1/1 for your ASIs and you can choose to be medium or small.
Every race in MotM is different from the original in at least the ASI method, if not other abilities.
Oh
That's weird
wait so i should put 14 on wis?
@quartz crane EGTW vs MotM Tortle differences:
Ability Score Increase: +2Str +1Wis vs +2/+1 any or +1/+1/+1 any
Size: Medium vs Medium or Small
Claws: 1d4+str vs 1d6+str
Skills: proficiency in Survival vs proficiency in Animal Handling, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival (select one)
Languages: Aquan (which is Primordial) and Common vs Common and one other language
Alignment: tend to LG vs no alignment statements
Monks need Wisdom
ah i see
got it
bout to become master oogway from the wisdon XD
about the background though, what's recommended
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Rattyschof_96229764.pdf basic monk, you’ll look something like this
no one wants a new comer to dnd in there game lol really struggling to get someone to show me the ropes
damn
Do you have an idea an image in your head of who this PC is, a concept of what they did before training as a monk
That a lot of differences kinda surprised the class are a d6 tho
Still thinking about the lore 😅 so it'll take some time
MotM updated a number of races, and I'm not surprised on the claws. TBH, 1d4 claws are nearly useless.
Actually had an idea that my character was like a wandering trader who struggled alot for a long time, so he started to look for an answer of who he is
Sounds good, I wouldnt worry too much about in-depth back story if your just doing a 1on1 thing with a friend to learn the game
Yeah
Hei
i have never played dnd and hoping to get into it does anybody have any recommendations

good luck, if you want to find a local group for real life play, I recommend checking friendly local game stores
Some of my irl notes went wet what do I do
That's not really a question for this channel, or even one anyone can help with
Dwarf cleric is classic!
wait do people actually make dwarvin clerics ?
Yup!
The art in the players handbook shows a dwarf cleric, and it's my father's go to character lol
nothing is original anymore
you ight]
The games been around for almost 50 years. Do yourself a favor and don't worry about originality. Just try to have fun
and I've been doing the game for 4+decades of those almost 50 years :)
so I reiterate, nothing is original anymore :P
I'm excited to join my first game though I still need to write the rest of my characters backstories.
For backstories, I wouldn't go super detailed, especially since you don't have a group yet. Broad ideas would be better as you don't know what kind of setting you will be in
I just looked through some guides on how to play the game, now I'd like to get started on making a character, what should be the first steps?
Think of a concept what kind of character do you want to play
Do you have a copy of the rules?
I mean, I can get one

ah, thanks
The first link are the free basic rules on d&d beyond. Chapter 1 is a step by step on character creation
alright
I figured not to make it too much, just enough that would be fun for DM and other players
Though I tend to go overboard at times whenever excited for something.
It's more that you don't know where the campaign is gonna take place, don't know what the dm wants, who the other players are, etc.
Once you have a game and get more info, you can flesh them out a bit more
even if I leave the backstory open ended? I figured to give the reason why my character is out traveling and likely to meet with the party for whatever setting the dm has for them
as well any small storyline that could be fun
Just wondering: what background is recommended for a monk with a air genasi race
What ever one fits how you envision your character
The background is a look into their life before adventuring
Ok
How do I know what values I can put into abilities and skills? Like, wich numberes I can put in?
ok, thanks
hi
Hey
so i just bought a dnd essentials get to get started since that’s all i could find and afford, and rn im making a character
he’s a moon elf, and he’s very proficient in magic, and he’s a sorcerer. but the way he casts magic is he enchants his fists and sorta just slaps the monsters with spells.
so, should i have him like a sorcerer with a sub class of fighter, or is there a better way i could make my character?
sub-classes are part of parent classes. Fighter is a parent class, Sorcerer is a parent class.
ahhh, ok. this is kinda lot of info for me to handle lmao, sometimes it’s confusing.
You might be thinking of multi-classing, that is where you eventually acquire an entirely different class.
you could make a sorcerer and mainly cast spells with a range of Touch
or, you could flavor your spells as you punching the air to create a spell.
My suggestion, keep it simple. You are a sorcerer, what Origin have you selected?
I would recommend you flavor, aka just describe, your spells in that way, that way you keep your options open for spells
bloodline is race, right? or am i confusing crap again lmao
for sorcerer bloodline is subclass
sorry, I used bloodline when I should've said Origin. (Too many editions in my head)
you get it at level 1 for sorcerer
so he’s a high moon elf
it's not your race
oh ok i’m dumb sorry
examples include: Draconic Bloodline, Wild Magic, Divine Soul, Shadow Magic, Storm Sorcery, Aberrant Mind, Clockwork Soul
no it's okay you're learning
many of those may be in books you do not possess
i don’t posses any books, their way too expensive, i couldn’t afford any
all i could buy was an essentials kit
since i couldn’t find the starter kit
there should be a few free subclass options on dndbeyond
I don't remember which Origins the EK has
well what bloodline makes him proficient in more elemental type magic? like wind and fire and water and stuff
But DnD Beyond should be granting you the origins of either Draconic Bloodline or Wild Magic
Not necessarily any of them, but right now go to DnD Beyond, see which Sorcerer sub-classes are available to you
I checked, the default option available without any purchases is the Draconic Bloodline
@storm tide your best bet, post your character, we can make suggestions
ok so i read some stuff, it said extraordinary events can happen to trigger a sorcerers power, as well as just having a latent power from their bloodline
is that right?
also why do i have to buy things to make my character? that doesn’t seem quite fair
Sure, think of it like Marvel Comics' mutants — something could trigger their powers later in life.
ahhh, ok
You have starting gear.
I think that’s all of them.
ok so, what if he got his magic from a mage that invaded his hometown and used a massive spell to basically nuke it, leaving some magical radiation type thing in him that fused with him and let him have access to an incredible amount of raw magic? sort of like a voldemort/harry potter type situation where harry’s power came from the spell failing and him taking a bit of voldemorts soul.
but a bit different.
do you guys think that would be a good origin for his power?
Sure? Ask your DM if it fits into their campaign setting.
Wild Magic or Aberant mind.
Could fit a sorcerer's reason to have magic. But realistically a sorcerer at does not start off with "world-shattering" powers.
Your DM can have the books purchased and you can then use them if they share them.
well, most of it would be latent, until he got more powerful and learned how to access it and shape it.
so he would t start off incredibly broken, he’d be at a very basic level, until he could actually handle his power without killing himself.
D&D, like most hobbies, isn't free. The Basic Rules are free but it's limited with the number of playable races and classes. Think of it like a video game demo. If you want to unlock to full game you have to pay for it.
Joining a campaign the DM may share their physical/digital books with you.
ahh, ok.
Well the plus side of d&d beyond is that you don't have to purchase the whole book
You can buy individual playable races/classes for about $2 each on D&D Beyond rather than the entire book.
what if i just play them anyways? nothing necessarily stops you from just joining a group and playing your character.
Generally it's best to run a character that fits well with the game and group playing that D&D game/campaign.
Dm does have control over what they allow in the game
Your DM (whoever they may be) will say whether or not your character fits their game.
Which is why it is generally best to discuss any character with your DM first
ok, i think my dm will allow it
So, I'm making a wizard rn, and I'm wondering where I can see the spells that you can start with.
Where are you making the wizard? (like DnD Beyond? a VTT? Paper?)
a PDF?
exactly
What level wizard?
1 I guess, I haven't figured out levels yet
Do you have a copy of the rules?
yes
That would be my next question, what book resources are you using?
There is a list of spells in chapter 10
the basic rules on D&D beyond
ok...lets clarify: did you purchase any books on D&D Beyond? Or just the SRD (free) stuff?
I didn't buy anything
Chapters 10 and 11 are all on spellcasting
ohhh, I thought it was under Equipment
Philinator doesn't have the PHB
I'm going off of the free basic rules, like they said they were using
ahhh ok
ty
On DnD Beyond you can also hover over "game rules", Spells, then Sorcerer
from, there you can select your desired spell level
ok
Here in the rules it says "4d4 x 10 gp" to determine starting wealth for wizards. What exactly does that mean?
Like, how do I calculate starting wealth like this?
roll 4 d4
Hi! My name is Kaedos and I am new to DND. I started a campaign a month or so ago with friends and it is going well. Other than the fact that I almost died in a lizard's stomach last night. Hehe.
What tips would you have for me to most effectively learn the game? I am still fleshing out my character. I am watching some Critical Role campaigns to see how the game can operate and for entertainment.
Currently I am playing an elf druid and am LEVEL 4 (we started at level 3). This character is based off my World of Warcraft night elf druid just to make a bit of it easier for starting out.
Really loving the game and am thoroughly addicted and excited.
roll 4d4, multiply by 10, that is how much gold you have to buy your gear with. IF you do not take the starting equipment option for Wizards and your background
add results, multiply by 10
ah ok, that makes sense
ty
I'd like to keep it simple, just take the starting wealth
usually starting gear is a better option but talk with your DM
usually, but there are exceptions. :)
got it
may i suggest if playing a magic user you at least make sure you dont forget to buy a focus or components pouch?
having to have materials in your inventory is not a fun way to play
This is the catchphrase of D&D - "there are exceptions!" lol
I won't be worrying too much for now, I gotta play a game first to really know what I like
gl with that, i just took in 5 newbies from this server. they said it was slim pickings. i suggest maybe looking around on fb as well to see if you have any groups in your area (might even be good to create a listing on fb marketplace looking for group) if you want a game here in a big community you gotta be fast
alright
playing on a physical tabletop is a better first experience imo, but online is a lot more organized
so i am making a new charater and i rolled a 10 on a d-10 on hp what hp would i be at now
Level 1 characters start with max hp
So a level 1 fighter with a 16 Con (+3 modifier) has 13 hp
i am a ranger i think
You think?
Yeah, if you check your class' page in the handbook or supplementary material, itll say (at 1st level). its always max hit die + con
con?
Constitution modifier - often shortened to "con"
my dice roll?
what number did you assign to Con? (yes that can be one of your 6 dice rolls)
wait i dont see it
okay so you rolled 4d6 and kept the highest 3, a total of 6 times correct?
no?
are you using point buy?
NO i am on the manage hit points thing on DND beyond
What level are you Brain Rot Zee?
and it told me to use a d 10
1?
i am making a new lvl 1 elf ranger
then you do not roll for hitpoints
Level 1 characters have max hp
you get the maximum, automatically...1d10 = 10 + constitution modifier
So 10 + Con modifier
to determine your hitpoints you add your con modifier to the max of your hit die, therefor you really need to know your con
so i rolled a 10 and the base hp is 10 so it would be 20 right?
NO
I'M SORRY
You do not roll a d10 at level 1
I'M NEW OKAY
That is fine, but we just explained it. :)
ima send you a ss of my screen
level 1: 10 + constitution modifier, no 1d10
Ok, lets make this clear:
1d10 is the hit die you get every level AFTER 1st
it is just telling you the size of your hit die.
At level 1 you get 10 + con mod
The screen shot you sent, hit cancel
then show me the screen shot of the page it takes you to
Good, do not hit "Manage HP" again, you don't need it right now.
Work through the rest of your steps....btw, what are your ability scores?
are you able to call so you can explain this to my smooth brain
Alas, I am not at this time.
Select your proficiencies, select your Favored Enemy, select your Natural Explorer option.
then move to the next step, abilities
i'll just wait for my friend to expain it sorry
Have you checked out the Handbook Helper series on youtube
It really is very simple, you get 10 hitpoints at level 1 (plus constitution modifier)
You do not roll 1d10, you do not add 1d10 to 10.
At level 2, you roll 1d10 or take the average. Then you add your constitution modifier (again), you add that total to what you got from level 1.
Personally I do not recommend rolling for hitpoints, ever.
i havent played dnd yet i am waiting for my first ever campaign so i still know nothing i am sorry
Again, go watch the Handbooker Helper tutorial video series on Youtube. It's much easier to digest than reading walls of text.

okay
Im currently a sophomore in high school and i’ve been wanting to get more experience in terms of participating in campaigns. From what i’ve seen, most of the campaigns I like are 18+ or whatnot. Any advice is welcome, open to anything at this point.
It is definitely an issue. I solved that issue for my sister's kids by creating and DMing a group for them, but my solution is probably relatively uncommon.
Yeah very. Only time i’ve really been able to participate in a group was either with my brother and his friends or a small group of online friends
both of which fell into the forbidden cycle of never finding a date to continue the next session
That is more about getting a schedule hammered out in advance. :)
true
@timber lily how wide a net are you casting?
(where are you trying to find a group?)
as of right now, anywhere i can find a group that welcomes me
whether that be here on discord or in person
Where/how are you searching specifically?
Let me rephrase: what resources are you using to apply? Only this Discord server?
ah, yeah as of now im only on this server
In addition to this server, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
widen your net
mainly came here to view the communities
include VTTs....and well everything iamrazorwing just wrote
but specifically VTTs, some of them have excellent looking for group resources.
If you'd rather find an in-person game, try your local game store
VTTs?
Virtual Tabletops
Virtual tabletops: Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc.
ah
such as....yes
start an extracurricular club
schools should support a club if you gather enough people to make one
i am currently viewing the VTTs
i could start a club, but i would rather get more experience before i do so
I'm loosely planning a character for my first ever game (we will all create characters together at session zero), is kalashtar a good option for a newbie? If so what should I know about them, and what should i ask/check with the dm about at session zero (its a homebrew world). If not, any good alternatives? Class would be druid btw.
I’m looking for a dnd to join

There's no race that would be particularly poor for a new player, I don't think. You can check the Forgotten Realms wiki for basic lore on kalashtar, but your DM may use none of that specifically.
Kalashtar are Eberron iirc.
Right. I figured they were in the FR wiki since that's pretty far-ranging, but you're right that it's on the Eberron wiki.
I think the likeliest options for younger folks are 1) check any local game stores or libraries for tabletop programming, 2) start a club in school (or see if one already exists), or 3) be the DM and folks will want to join your game.
Or have an older family member who will DM for you and your siblings/cousins/etc. :)
(I am doing that for my sister's kids and their friends)
is there a reason why the vc is locked?
You need to be a member of the server for 24 hours before you gain access to it.
okay

Yo if u find someone lmk im knew too
Do i still take fall damage when i fell somewhere below 10ft?
Typically no, it's minimum of 10 feet and per 10 feet thereafter.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Falling
At the end of a fall, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it fell
I am also looking for people who don't mind helping out and showing me the ropes

Hello, apologies in advance if this isn’t the right channel. I’ll move it elsewhere if need be.
I’ve never made a character before, but I’m using the character builder on DnD Beyond right now. I’m at the Personal Characteristics section of my description which instructs me to choose two options. Does that mean two options from each of the four categories, or two options in total from those four categories? Can I make up my own? Can I have more than two?
I’m not part of a campaign, I’m just trying to get a sense of character building in general. I really don’t know what I’m doing.
What are the options?
The four categories are Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws. Each have multiple options too.
The website instructs me to choose two, but I’m not sure exactly what that means. Maybe I can ignore it all together? I’ve never made a character before.
It should be one from each
