Add +1 to dex and con and +2 to cha
And if con is odd switch it with int
To give yourself 16 there and a modified 16 in con
Also, how come you are level 3 on a new char?
I’m using DnD Beyond and there’s no Dark elf option.
Half Elf (Dark)
It is in there
Hit the disclosure arrow by half elf
So Change Race > (enter elf into the search field) > expand Half Elf to see the variants
I happen to be building a character tonight too
Can I dm u?
Sure
Only the races included in the Basic Rules are available by default.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
For Drow Half-Elf, you’d need access to the book Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide.
Or you can buy the race individually. (Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.)

when i roll for damage as a sorcerer i add my attack bonus to the d20 roll right?
For the attack it's 1d20+proficiency mod + spellcasting mod
For the spells it is usually just the dices that decides on the damage you deal
Take fire bolt for example, it's only a d10 fire damage, nothing more nothing less
That will depend on what you're attack with. The spell descriptions will say what damage dice to roll for.

what is the SRD subclass for clerics ?
You can look it up in the basic rules which are linked one post up from yours
Life cleric
i'd want the justice domain but some site say it's in the books and some say it's completely homebrew
There are several third party publishers who have made books with a Justice domain. So it's not official WOTC stuff but it is usable in 5e
Just clear it with your DM if you want to use it
Srd?
As in order domain?
System Reference Document. Basically it's the free, open version of D&D's rules, and it has one subclass option for each class.
Is it still an unarmed attack when I grapple an enemy and break their arm?
Per the rules, you can't just "break their arm"
An unarmed attack is one made without a weapon and it has no direct connection to grappling
So I can't do an attack while grappling?
you can attack while grappling if your other hand wields a weapon that only requires one hand
and of course you can make unarmed attacks while grappling even if all your hands are full
By any chance when we join a session do we have to have a character sheet ready premade or should we make one while preparing for session 0?
do you get an advantage on the weapon attack roll in this case ?
no, unless you take the grappler feat (which isnt a good feat, but thats less relevant)
okay
Is it technically an unarmed attack if i just slammed or maybe throw the opponent?
or those things aren't allowed in 5e atleast
There aren't core rules for slamming or throwing enemies to deal damage
you can try to shove someone to the ground and the grapple them to prevent them from standing up. or shove them away from you
"slamming" is just doing an normal unarmed strike
Extremely new just started getting interested in dnd 3 days ago
Do you as a player get to find better weapons than whatever you’re using as the campaign progresses and do they add dmg to your damage roll?
Or are weapons just an rp aspect as well as a vessel to get that damage from the roll onto a target?
Your DM may make magic weapons that deal more damage or have special effects available
But even without those, your likelihood of hitting and your damage will increase as you level up and your stats increase
Your chance to hit is a combination of your proficiency bonus (a number that increases as your level goes up) and your ability modifier (the stat you use to attack, usually dexterity or strength, which you can increase at certain levels), while your damage is based on that same ability modifier, plus whatever dice the weapon uses
I see so only if the dm lets a player discover a magical weapon with a special attribute for lack of better term, will let your weapon add damage to a roll?
For example, if your proficiency is +3 and your dexterity is +3, you'll roll d20 + 6 to hit, and with a weapon that uses a d6 damage dice, roll d6 + 3 damage
If you level up and your proficiency increases to +4 and your dexterity to +4, you've not got a +8 to hit and d6 + 4 damage
magic weapons are very different. some simply give +1 to hit and +1 to damage, some dont give a +1 to hit but maybe + 2d6 fire damage on a hit for example
No, your weapons have a default damage dice that is the base line
Magic weapons are just better versions
for example, a sword may roll d8 for damage
A +1 version of that sword rolls the same dice, but adds an additional +1 to that damage, and also adds that +1 to your to hit bonus
Using the example above, if you roll d20 + 8 to hit and d6 + 4 damage, with a +1 version you'd be rolling d20 + 9 and d6 + 5
You may also find weapons that do additional damage of a different type, such as a Frostbrand or Flame Tongue weapon that do fire or cold damage respectively
Ah ok I understand now, I play games that follow a similar rule.
Does the weapon type ever add anything? Like attempting a certain attack or maybe a sword will do better against unarmored enemies while a warhammer or mace will fare better against armored?
Or are base weapons like that with no magical or +anything effects just vessels for the dice
Have you given the basic rules a read yet?
No where can I find those?

armor is pretty simple in 5e, so there are very few situation where your damage type makes a big difference, but some creatures do have specific weaknesses.
skeletons for example are vulnerable to bludgeoning weapons like hammers.
That was easier to find than I thought it’d be lol thanks I will give it a read
That makes everything a lot simpler thank you, do most dms keep up with the whatever the current versions rules are or is it a mix up on what they might follow
most of the time, DMs will chose one edition to DM and mostly stick to that, baring some house rules of course
5th edition is the current edition and by far the easiest to find games in as it does have the biggest playerbase
Alright then thanks again for the help

Alright thanks
when rolling for attack as a sorcerer, its d20 + spell attack bonus right?
then the spells damage dice
Yep!
took a hell of a time to finally figure that out, it seems so simple
Yep, the core math of D&D is just addition and subtraction. Figuring out what to add/subtract and when is the tricky bit.
What about the common core D&D math?
For a spell attack, yes.
(Not for a weapon attack.)
I trying to build my first character is the path for totem warrior on barbarian only obtainable through buying the handbook?
I read something about adding it through homebrew but I’m not sure what that is
Are you making the character on D&D Beyond?
Yessir
Do you own the Player's Handbook either digitally or physically?
Nope
Then you're out of luck, unless someone else in the campaign you're in shares content with you.
You can buy just that subclass on D&D Beyond for around $2. You don't need to buy the entire book.
Visit the page for any book, and you'll see the content you can buy individually. https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
If you buy individual items, it counts toward the total cost of the book should you buy that later on.
Small correction; individual game options are $2 ($1.99 to be precise)
I stand corrected!

If only we could follow the general 5e rules and round down :(
So yeah my boyfriend invited me to his dnd and i have like no knowledge at all
I just know that i will be able to have one main class and two sub classes
so i already decided that my main class will be bard and my first sub class will be barbarian
So that i can violently bludgen people to death with a tuba
thats not how classes and subclasses work. Unless your BFs DnD game operates on signifcantly different rules than normal, then what you describe doesnt work like that.
the basic rules are free and linked right above in the text box, if you wanna know how things work.
Not official.
for example: Barbarian and Bard are both classes. subclasses are choices you make while taking levels in your class.
A Bard can make the choice at level 3 what subclass they take. Bard subclasses are called colleges. so you would take bard as you class and then at level 3 chose one college (with names like Lore or Eloquence)
since this is homebrew, its best to ask your DM directly what the rules are. I would guess that two subclasses means just that. a bard could take two colleges for example. But I cant know for sure
Bard and barbarians are separate classes.
Think of a class like a profession such as engineer. Sub-classes are like specialties like electrical, computer, civil, mechnical, chemical, or aerospace engineer.
Yup. That would take the least amount of work. Since otherwise what’s the point of having a subclass that empowers your class features if you don’t have the features of the class in the first place?
Well....what class do i have to pick to bludgen things to death with a tuba?
You could easily go with barbarian, and flavor your big maul as a tuba.
Tuba isn't a weapon. It would be an improvised weapon.
fighter or barbarian. Either reflavor a normal weapon or get the tavern brawler feat to use improvised weapons
HI
If you just want to use it to bash people, Fighter/Barbarian/Paladin(STR classes)
If you actually want to play it in combat as well then you can multiclass into Bard, but multiclassing is very complex
oo
hello hello
IM VERY NEW and really wanna get into dnd but idek where to start 😭
if it helps i enjoy support/deceptive playstyle

Alright I see some recognizable races, but I think I need an explanation on them still
On what part specifically?
Like what's a DragonBorn, and does it correlate to skyrim?
Ah thank you
Maybe it's MoTM... ah beaten!
It’s a good one!
Definitely better than the first, which is why I went hunting for others to begin with. 🤣
Wood! First session was a success as a new DM!
Through the roll of lucky or unlucky dice, the group came literally face to face with a banshee at lvl 2.
They weren't even supposed to encounter it yet. But one person in the group heard a warning from an NPC and took it as an open invitation. In fact I said "Nobody from the town dares visit that home of death." The barbarian heard "He's daring us to go there. Says we can't handle it."
you always gotta expect players to do the dumbest possible things
The druid elf discovered an old elvish rug in this abandoned home. She lifted it up and the banshees face phased through a hidden door and let out a Wail mere inches from her face.
Failed zave. Zero HP.
Everyone else saved
yeah that checks out
It turned out so perfect.
However, the group could've easily handled this encounter without fighting. I had it set up for them to discover the name of the child the banshee lost when she was still alive. Had they tried to speak the child's name in elvish, she would've remembered that she needed to move on from this plane
They have the kids name and a sketch of him too.
But they snooped around too quickly
Ehm hello, sadly I'm really new to all this and don't know how to start.
I have a character paper (I don't know how the other word it is written) and wanted to go for the owlin race because I love wings but on dnd beyond I need to purchase something and I don't have the money.
How can I build this race if someone can help me?
Do you have a group yet? The DM may not allow certain playable races, such as owlins.
Yes I have a DM and he allowed it if I can build her
Okay, the owlin is from the Strixhaven book.
If you use D&D Beyond you (or your DM if they share their digital content) can buy the owlin race for $1.99 in the Marketplace
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/strixhaven-a-curriculum-of-chaos
yuhhh wsppp
@cobalt frigate ohh i didnt know that u can buy the race only, thats perrfect
Can someone maybe send me an English version of the character sheet I can't chance the languages 😅
Thanks ^^
Hey-hey people. Is it common here that DMs start games with total noobies and teach then? Or mostly veteran players with some exceptions?
Is there like a place or a person to look for?
Just want to pick a new creative hobbie and try to find some chill people.
Even tho i played few times with friends, the game seems intimidating still
Any suggestions how should i start on my DnD rabbit hole journey
There’s definitely plenty of beginner-friendly games out there!
Mostly not free i assume?

spells and weapons
Hi I’m completely new and would like to start playing but I’m lost on how to even get started tbh.
Is it possible to play completely online?
I have been wanting to get into D&D for roughly a year and a half but my job has so much travel involved that it is impossible for me to routinely play in person so I’d like to play with a group of people online.
well i dont know what i get as a sorcerer and everything i find is very confusing
So what level are you playing as cause that can vary how many spells you get
How do I join a game on the app ?
whatever is the beginning level, i think 1
The DnDBeyond app doesn't connect to any games per se. You find a group of people that want to play D&D, find a play space (online or in person), and then play D&D together. The app and tools just helps with managing character sheets, provide a shared dice log, and provide some other neat tools for DMs (encounter builder). And access to digital versions of the books/rules.
So you’d start with 2 spells (first level spells) and 4 cantrips from the sorcerer spell list
Also as a sorcerer you’d start with a subclass aka the origin of your magic
Okay so I need to find a group of people to play with basically?
What platform is most commonly used as a play space?

Discord is a popular tool - the #looking-for channels here are a way to find a group to play with.
There is also Roll20, Demiplane, your local game/comic store, public libraries, asking your friends to try the game...
I travel way to much to play in person
In just the past month Iv worked in like 5 states.
Hello 👋
Then yeah check out #looking-for-players or even #looking-for-community.
If scheduling may be an issue (e.g. when you're available to play changes frequently), then finding a Westmarch-style server (in #looking-for-community) may be a better option.
Or even check out AL (Adventurer's League) which is organized D&D play which has more drop in play.
what sort of backgrounds are there, i can only find one kind
You need to own the D&D books on DnDBeyond to use them in the character sheet tool
Otherwise you're limited to what's available in the free basic rules which is just one subclass for each class.
You need to run the commands in #1075498333705089084
Also check #find-a-game for more info on how it all works.
It actually should work here, too.
You just need a second dash instead of that space.

Ok. So i posted a "looking for Dm" thing. And now just wait for any poor soul willing to babysit me with this mindblow of a game xD

Welcome!
Heyo! I’m fairly new (as in I’ve only been in one game that never made it past session zero.) but I have a passion for the game! If someone wants to teach me lol. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and watching videos and whatnot.
Did you have any specific questions you’re wondering about?
Hi new people how are things going in your world? Any luck finding games?
Hello everyone
I have a question
What is this red thing on my character creation screen
Aw can’t send pics here
It means you have an unallocated level because you're using XP levelling
Your character has enough XP to reach level 3, but you haven't specified where that level is going (because your rogue class is still level 2)
That is how it normally works
You just need to pick your level, either level 3 in rogue, or level 1 in another class
Ok home page before race.
There will be a tab that’s let’s you pick milestone
I’m brand new to DnD… so just quietly saying hi. I’ll be playing my first ever one-shot next week (throwing a ‘Dungeons, Dragons & Dinner’ eve for my sibling with my partner). I’ve got a character in mind, and I’ve started setting her up on D&D Beyond, but the points are already confusing me! Anywhere to get advice on this, and is it easier setting it up on the D&DB app first, or using printed character sheets and starting from there? Thanks in advance!
Hi, welcome 😄 The D&D Beyond character builder does just sort of assume you know how all the stats work. I recommend checking out the free basic rules, and maybe a how to play guide on YouTube, to get a good handle on them, then deciding what to use

@unborn mirage Here's a pack of resources that could help
Thanks so much!
Glad to help! If you end up with any specific questions, feel free to ask
Are there any free Adventures made by other players online? If yes where can i find the? I've been trying to play a campaign/oneshot game of d&d where i will be the dm, only that I don't know where to start
DMsGuild! You can search by a variety of filters, including price.
Winghorn Press also has a number of popular one-shots freely available (see the Adventures drop-down on their site: https://winghornpress.com/).
We just got Avrae on our server and my players are trying to play with it. Most of them are using D&D Beyond on mobile. How do they get the url for their character sheets on the app? I can't figure it out.
You can get Prisoner 13 at no cost, a self-contained chapter from Keys From the Golden Vault.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/prisoner-13
Frozen Sick, too, from Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (if you’re Critical Role fans).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/wa/frozen-sick
And if you want a full campaign, there’s Lost Mine of Phandelver.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
I’m not sure what the interface looks like on the app as I use the desktop version, but somewhere on the sheet there should be a Manage button, which includes a Share function in the menu of options. The URL is there.
It’d be easier to do it directly on the website, but you can get to that shareable link in a very roundabout way through the app.
Ok thanks
About how many sessions does it last?
That depends on multiple factors. I think I’ve seen Reddit estimates between 20 and 40 hours of gameplay.
Ok thanks, i guess ill just read the book and see what happens next
- Click the Gear icon at the top left of your character sheet.
- Select “Manage Character & Levels”. (This will load the site in an in-app web browser.)
- Click the three lines in the top right and select Collections > My Characters.
- Find your character and hit View.
- Hit the Manage button at the top, then select Sharable Link from the menu that appears.
Thank you!
Have you read the rules? It's described there.
okay so if you make an attack you roll to hit.
that roll is a d20 + some modifiers. if you total is equal or higher than the targets armor class, you hit them. a 20 one d20 is a critical hit
DC means Difficultly Class. How hard a task is. if someone attempts to do anything that is a challenge, they roll to see if they meet or beat the DC.
some examples.
You attempt to pick a lock. the DM sets the DC at a value, lets say 15 and then you roll a d20 + modifiers. if you get a 15 total or higher, you succeed.
an enemy casts fireball on you you must make a DC 14(number might change) dexterity saving throw. Roll a d20 + saving throw modifier to see if you can avoid half the damage
Initiative is rolled at the start of combat to determine the turn order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
It's just a Dexterity check.
(So a roll a d20 and add your Dexterity modifier.)
Then the outcome of rolling the d20 is how effective your attack is or-
For an attack? It either hits, misses, or scores a critical (in which case you do extra damage).
Yep. You can find the rules for attack rolls here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#AttackRolls
Thanks
How does teleportation circle spell work
It works how the spell description says it works, is there a specific detail of that you're having trouble with?
so do you make a circle and be able to go back to it or
like can you sum it up for me in a sentence my stupid brain isn't understanding something
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/teleportation-circle
As you cast the spell, you draw a 10-foot-diameter circle on the ground inscribed with sigils that link your location to a permanent teleportation circle of your choice whose sigil sequence you know and that is on the same plane of existence as you. A shimmering portal opens within the circle you drew and remains open until the end of your next turn. Any creature that enters the portal instantly appears within 5 feet of the destination circle or in the nearest unoccupied space if that space is occupied.
You can't go back to it, the spell only lasts 1 round
Only if you make it permanent via the last paragraph can you return to it
You can create a permanent teleportation circle by casting this spell in the same location every day for one year. You need not use the circle to teleport when you cast the spell in this way.
Got it, thanks peeps
I think hearing it from someone else even if you just pasted, helped me understand it a lot better
Hello
Monster is worth 1100 xp, group of 4 kills it. Is the xp divided evenly? Or does each person get 1100?
What is the usual level people get to by the end of a campaign or one shot?
I read something in a yt comment section that basically said getting to level 18 was pretty rare and people agreed
I thought 18 was kinda low no? Do you stop getting important skills by like level 10 and the rest is hp upgrades or something?
this game only goes from level 1-20.
I see still 18 isn’t even max level
you get pretty big increases every level after 10 too, that is part of the issue. Mastering a Game beyond level 12 is pretty tough for many DMs
Ahh ok so everything becomes a little op?
basically, especially spellcasters
I’m assuming xp is hard to come by then
not really, if you fight level appropiate monsters, then most levels take about the same amount of time
Which is about ?
games just tend to ...end. the story is told, the game fizzles out due to real life etc.
That sounds kinda heart wrenching lol but I get it
two to three challenging adventuring days, or equivalent
That sounds like about a sesh? Maybe 2?
not really. not every session is an adventuring day. one can take up 2-3 sessions easily if you do a dungeon crawl and if you have downtime, travel or RP heavy sessions then there is much less xp to earn as well
Basically if i roll a d20 on my Hit/Dc its an hit no matter what, + what else?
Nvm i found it on the book
Wasn't looking hard enough
A Nat 20 is only an automatic hit for attack rolls, not DC checks.
I know that, but i called it because its called like this in the app so i thought it was the right way to refer to it
Hi all! Just joined, im an artist that makes dnd dice dragons and im new to dnd and hoping to learn more ❤️

Ty!
i understand how to make a character, but how do i make it less "flat"? im not too creative when it comes to backstory or personality
I suggest working with your DM and group to come up with backgrounds that fit the kind of D&D game you all want to play and that may work well with the other party members. For instance maybe you are all veterans from the same mercenary group so have some shared history before going adventuring.
i dont have a group or anything, its part of the reason why i joined this discord group XD thats probably why i find even making a character a bit hard
i dont know anyone that either currently plays or is interested in playing dnd, so i went to the internet for help, and it led me to here and dnd beyond
i guess all the wotc drama drew me back to thinking of playing and i just went for it, and idk what im doing lol

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Ty but, free?
After you read the Basic Rules and/or watch the videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Is there something that’s paid?
Yes the basic rules are free
The Basic Rules are free. Think of them like a game demo. The full game costs money (via books).
There are various other books (digital or print) that you can buy that provide additional rules and options
At most tables the Dungeon Master (aka DM) tends to be the person who buys most of the books and shares them with their players.
(Tis the life of a forever DM...)
Could one of you give me an example
An example of another book? The Basic Rules contain a number of monsters, but the Monster Manual—one of the three core rule books—contains many more as well as information pertaining to monster lore/mechanics generally. And the Manual costs money.
I meant a character I should have specified
If you're a player, the first book you would probably get is the Player's Handbook, which has more playable races and classes than what are in the free Basic Rules.
Example of a character?
Perhaps you should read the Basic Rules first because any answer we give may not make sense to you if you have no context of what is viable.
With what the robe of eyes can do, can it see through fog? Or is visón obstructed still
I don’t know, but I bet you could also ask #dnd-rules
Okay I’ll try there, thanks!
You are welcome.
👍
what are dex con int wis cha and str collectively referred to
attributes
Those are really just flavor.
Some people get really into role playing.
no wayyyyy they are so important to making a unique character even if you aren't an actor
they connect you to the world around you
give you the flaws of someone that feels real
I said flavor because there aren't mechanics tied to them.
Officially, they’re called abilities.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
The number you have for each ability from 1 to 20 is your ability score, and the number from -5 to +5 is your ability score modifier.
Probably depends on the people. 🤣
Stats? Scores?
Why are you looking for the wrong name here? 😜
These would collectively fall under Personal Characteristics.
between a prescribed name and a de-facto name, I wanna use the one that players actually use when referring to it
Flavoring.
I love flavor
Watermelon and Blue-rasberry.

check out #dnd-arts-and-crafts
If you’re looking for a label to put on your character sheet, you should really put Abilities.
Or Ability Scores.
Hey, I'm looking for a DM for a group of about 5 newish players - how would I look for one in the looking-for-dm bot channel? I couldn't find how to post lol
Woops, found it haha
The official is "background characteristics" aka "personal characteristics" often called: "personality" or "character traits". Some people collectively refer to them as personality traits, roleplay traits, behavior, etc
Flavor is creating story around mechanics, and re-flavoring is changing the non-mechanical lore/description details.
I'm not sure I've ever heard players commonly refer to them with a single term, people often just say "ideals, bond, flaws", or refer to one specifically

I literally just found dnd, idk what it is or how to play, my friend just ordered me to make a character on DND Beyond.. idk what to do from here for online games
Does dnd have a specific world or lore that you must abide too or can change ?
The world, or "setting" is something to ask your DM (dungeon master), but by far the most popular setting is the "forgotten realms" on the planet of Toril, and usually somewhere on the Sword Coast. Don't worry about knowing things, you just use the DM to access information your character would have eg: "DM, does my character know about ...?" "What does my character know about the customs of this region?" "Does my character know about this creature?" "Does my character know where to read up about ...?"
Okay I’ll talk to my friend about this, tysm
Either way creating a character should work the same. Just go through the character creator. Use default settings on the first page where it talks about sources, and ask questions regarding the rest here. 🙂
Awesome
or use something like fastcharacter.com to get a feel
When I finish my work I’ll update the character sheet I have
I’ll try different places!
it can generate a ready character with the push of a button
I’ll do that! Ty
Hey is there such a thing as the most efficient choice of a backstory in a one shot? Since it can't really be too detailed if the adventure is short
There are certainly ideal background features for a given story, especially if they are short. And backstories can have a big effect on your role in a game. But although I would pick something relevant, I would rather pick something relevant, but FUN or what I want... And then trust in the DM to incorporate my background and backstory.
Basically what is "best" or "ideal" can only be so in hindsight. Usually, not even the DM knows exactly where the story will go. But you can certainly pick a background feature better suited to a city (eg: investigator) if in a urban campaign, or a feature better for foraging (outlander) in a wilderness survival campaign. And it's even trickier with your backstory, because it's up to the DM how much to weave it in and give any mechanical advantages based on it.
Ahhh thank you!!
Your backstory though is a GREAT way to communicate to your DM the types of experiences you are looking for, as well as give ways to pull your character in, and drive the story (see the "knives" theory for creating backstories)
Hello guys i have never tried dnd is there basic rules or stuff required to start?

There are a bunch of links to help. Ask questions you have in this channel as you have them. People are usually eager to help. 🙂
there is no app needed to play or run D&D, but often people will use VTT programs (Virtual Table Top)
Is the grid really necessary for combat sessions?
No
no, many people play simply with theater of the mind
These almost always hold the map and usually show where the characters are and the enemies and often have a "fog of war" to hide what the players have not seen yet, beyond that the more advanced systems have digital dice rollers and character sheets and automation to do a lot of the game math and effects automaticaly
Grid is optional, but 99% of games use it
I personally prefer the grid though, so much easier in more complicated battles
Grids/VTTs can be helpful for many folks who have a difficult time visualizing positioning and space and can lead to more “tactical” combat
I actually like the freedom of going gridless, but you need tools for it. And theater of the mind is great but at a certain scale and number of bodies you need at least a grid or map to glance at where creatures and stuff is generally
I dont think that number is right. Theater of the mind is certainly much more popular than just 1% of the games
There are four kind of official ways: theater of mind, absolute, square grid, hex grid. (and even square grid has variations)
But even those games will pull out a grid at some point or have some kind of concrete representation. I rarely see a 100% ToM game.
but even 1% is a lot
This is not the channel to argue what percentage plays what way
to be more accurate, I'll say 1-10%
Please remember that this channel is for helping newcomers with the basics
Is dnd player vs dungeonmaster.
The opposite
Our discussing it was for helping a new player understand what to expect, not being "right" 🙂 But I appreciate you pulling us back on track.
D&D is not a competitive game by design, no
It's a narrative cooperative game and while the Dungeon Master may be in charge of the antagonistic elements of the game, they are not traditionally against the players themselves
If you have done a discord roleplay before then its basically like that
It can be, but that style is often considered toxic. So generally the best games are when the DM is a fan of the players, and sets challenges that are appripriate (provide the desired challenge wiht minimal risk of TPK while feeling substantial and rewarding)
but more randomized
Roleplay? Ummm i only know one meaning of that.
As the introduction of the Basic Rules says:
In the Dungeons & Dragons game, each player creates an adventurer (also called a character) and teams up with other adventurers (played by friends). Working together, the group might explore a dark dungeon, a ruined city, a haunted castle, a lost temple deep in a jungle, or a lava-filled cavern beneath a mysterious mountain. The adventurers can solve puzzles, talk with other characters, battle fantastic monsters, and discover fabulous magic items and other treasure.
One player, however, takes on the role of the Dungeon Master (DM), the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM creates adventures for the characters, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore. The DM might describe the entrance to Castle Ravenloft, and the players decide what they want their adventurers to do. Will they walk across the dangerously weathered drawbridge? Tie themselves together with rope to minimize the chance that someone will fall if the drawbridge gives way? Or cast a spell to carry them over the chasm? Then the DM determines the results of the adventurers’ actions and narrates what they experience. Because the DM can improvise to react to anything the players attempt, D&D is infinitely flexible, and each adventure can be exciting and unexpected.
Playing your character, making decisions and reacting to the world based on how your character would respond, rather than you
I mean you literally play a role in this game. (or many roles if you are the dungeon master)
Oh so dungeon master is like a referee
That is one of their roles, yes
Oh so basically acting.
Not quite
Roleplay can be done in first person (speaking as your character, more like acting) or in third person (describing what your character does)
More like story telling, but acting can be a part of it.
Think narrating like an audiobook
Thats a bit relieving i am pretty bad at acting
interactive audiobook with rules
For example
"I pull out my lock picks and using my years of experience in the thieves guild, pick the lock"
vs
"Zarath gets out their lock pick and picks the lock, drawing on their years of experience in the thieves guild"
Or it can even just be
"My character attempts to pick the lock"
There are lots of ways to roleplay, it's all about what you and your table are comfortable with
Is being good at roleplaying help in winning in dnd?
You don't really "win" D&D
you don't have to speak in a gruff but panicked voice... you can just say "in a gruff but panicked voice my character says something to the effect of get out of my way, but in draconic language"
Like, you can overcome challenges and save the day and defeat the evil villain, but there's no real 'win state'
Kinda like how finishing a book isn't winning
Oh ok.
D&D is very much about the journey
So no negative repercussions of being bad at roleplaying. I see
In theory, no
But D&D is whatever the table makes of it
Some groups may lean more heavily into RP than others
winning in D&D is having a good time. That can depend on how you derive fun from the game. Check out: https://theangrygm.com/gaming-for-fun-part-1-eight-kinds-of-fun/
Some table loves to RP, and 5e is just the system they choose to do it in. SOme groups just wanna roll dice and hit stuff with a hammer. There's plenty of ways to play dnd
RP in some fashion is what gives the game life though. To just go through the motions, flatly describing your environment and rolling dice, strictly going by rules (that nearly no one person has fully mastered, so bound to get wrong eventually anyway)... All that stuff just sounds boring. What's the point of playing if it's boring?
Can be done in so many different ways as painted above. Just got to find your own groove.
Being bad at roleplaying is still fun as hell. Not roleplaying at all... That's not as fun. As a player or DM I wouldn't want to play with other people like that.
And yet Gloomhaven is a hit. 😛
Whether for the combat or the roleplay, you can find a table/DM that can run the game you want. 🙂 I think the point is to try all the things (eventually at least) because they all can be really fun and it takes practice to really know if it's something that can be fun for you, or something you just haven't figured out yet or gotten past the barrier (whether awkwardness or understanding).
Sorry that one whooshed by me, I am not familiar with gloomhaven 😕
It's a board game that is basically D&D combat distilled (possibly more akin to PF, hard to tell), but it's rails written plot so the gameplay is really all combat no RP, still really fun for people who like it. Just saying that even with zero RP the game can be fun. Or zero combat. I agree that it shines when there are all the things and all of them are done well though.
Ohh you know what, I do remember that game now duh, sorry I was thinking it was a module or something.
Yeah it was a weird game, I did not enjoy that nearly as much as a typical rpg
Let's keep things on topic please
Ok how do critical hits work if my normal damage is like 8d6 +(modifier). Does it become 16d6+(mod)?
Correct
A critical hit doubles the number of damage dice you roll for that attack
This applies to all damage dice you roll when you hit, including bonus dice from effects such as Rogue's sneak attack, Paladin's smite, or the extra dice from a magic weapon such as a flametongue sword
hello there im new here ive seen some dnd vids on tik tok and wanted to give it a shot what should i know to start
Yes but If you are the DM, dont forget you have the Power to add additions to that. Like If in Addition to that 16d6 you want a Wildmagic surge to Happen, Go ahead🙃
Let's keep things basic shall we (per channel rules)
Getting into stuff like house rules should be kept to channels like #dm-discussion and #homebrew
Best place to start would be flipping through the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

Soo uhhh what are some good rping tips for a little beginner like me?
If you're nervous about roleplaying a character, start by talking in the third person rather than in first person.
I like Ginny Di's playlist of advice: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsmjZYZs1ps3uBojbWiYIAIpuoAmJTRks
One big-picture tip I'd offer: roleplay as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable. If the table gives you flak for that, find a new table.
Player: "My character, Bob, does this..."
You can always describe their posture to communicate how they feel.
Don't worry about doing voices or accents.
I also think in TTRPGs it's fine to "tell, not show" as you don't have all the tools available in writing a story. So you can just flat out describe your character's mood or vibe instead of feeling compelled to show it via action.
React to things that are happening. If something happens, how would your character react, and narrate it like a book. Keep it short at first. Even if you don't actually say it aloud, or commit it, get used to narrating your characters reactions to everything in your head. That will work up courage to actually say the one's that feel like they enhance the groups' story.
well I kept rping my character doing stuff that dob't match his personality or what he would actually do in that situation
You can also practice roleplay: either via writing, thought exercises, or responding aloud to prompts.
and I kinda want to stop that but I don't know how
The best touchstone for that I think is the ideal(s)
eh that issue is mostly trivial since I'm playing it over text lol
maybe the ideal you chose isn't connecting, write a new or additional one
Really? Haven't really gotten that set up lol
You asked, I answered.
When you say you act not as the character, do you mean you react as YOU would instead of as the character would?
Ideals help give perspective into how and why a character makes the choices they do.
I'm sorry if I said smth bad
yeah that lol
Put the character into hypothetical situations, and meditate on how their ideal(s) would influence their decision making process, and in short order you will have a much better understanding of them
I think this isn't a huge problem if you're a new player. I think as you gain experience as a player (and confidence/comfort), you'll feel more able to jump outside your own thought patterns. If your first few characters are like you, that's kind of normal, I'd say.
thank you, thats actually a really great idea
ah I see, I was kinda worrying about it since players around me are rping really well and stuff
If they've played a bunch, they'll have eased into it far more. Don't compare yourself; that rarely ends well.
yea I'll prolly ended up copying their character entirely lol
if all else fails you could take a look at other resources: movies, books, games etc. how do characters in these act? how are they different from how you yourself would act in a situation that they've found themselves in and reacted to? that could help with getting some ideas on how to step away from your own line of thinking
you're right, I think I should just go into it without any worries
That said, aside from the above advice, there are sources out there full of roleplay tips. Reddit and YouTube in particular have useful guides for roleplay newbies that aren't tough to find with the ol' Google.
If you decide later you need some additional insight, that is.
thanks for all of your guys' advices, they're all pretty useful. I'll look into them later since I'm pretty unwell rn. Again, many thanks for taking your time to help me with my little issue!
Can someone explain how the dm and stuff works cause idrk
idrk anything except like u can make a character

What would be your opinions on dispatching a Banshee in a non-combative way? Like if the group somehow reminded her of her dead child or showed her a picture of them? The memory of that life rushes back to her and now she remembers that she has to move on to the next plane to be with her deceased child? Or is that too cheesy and she just needs to die by eldritch blast spamming?
I'd say depends on your players, if your players prefer to fight then let them fight, if they want to get rid of it in other ways then give them those methods. In my opinion, i wouldn't call the idea cheesy, unless it was done very anticlimactically.
The DM could absolutely provide alternative means of dispatching a monster, and could even rely on some of the information provided in its description as inspiration.
However, the players wouldn’t be able to just dictate that as a thing they could do. It would require the DM to set it up and allow for it.
The life cleric has pissed himself, the barbarian is frightened, and the druid failed a save on Wail when she incidentally became nose to nose with the banshee while looking under a rug. The tension is built.
Then another method is very much viable, you can ask them if they want to look around for anything that could help and hint at a broken picture frame or something similar. Or just remind them if this is something you talked about before. I personally let my players make investigation or insight checks as an action for tips on how to better fight, such as fight a weakspot, find something useful to use or something else.
They have kids name. The Dwarf Barb rolled a 21 on a DC20 check to make out a name on a VERY OLD headstone. And he also has a Sketch of the Family. Mother standing next to her son with the head of the father ripped off. They have everything they would need to do it. They just have to put the pieces together to do. I haven't explicitly told them they could dispatch her this way. But had they gathered info, went back to town and asked a historian or something, with high enough rolls they could've figured out how to do it before engaging.
Yup. It’s a good thing to ask about outside of the game. Many times DMs can appreciate a solid player-derived plot-hook.
Funny thing, this thing they are doing isn't even part of the plot of this campaign. The manor they are investigating isn't even labeled on the map. By the roll of the dice, they got information and a warning about the house from an Innkeeper. "Nobody in town dares enter the Mullen Manor."
Barb: HEY JOE! THIS GUYS DARING US TO GO TO A HAUNTED HOUSE. SAYS WE WONT DO IT!
Maybe you could make a player notice a shiny empty picture frame and if they look at it then they'll notice the picture is missing.
This was an encounter I added just in case they asked about it since it's on the map. They even picked up the quest for the plot, but immediately got sucked into a side-quest that I added randomly. It's been quite comical and I love it.
Tried to hint to players of another way to do this encounter and they said "F- that we fight." I tried.
[What is the situation here? I am confused as to how I should work myself into this]

We need a bot command for that.
Im just glad they don't know that I 100% lied about the Dmg they took from the Banshees Wail (she legit rolled max damage) which would've almost wiped the whole group and brought our tankiest player down to like 7hp.
For handbooker helper?
Not about to TPK my NEW PLAYERS on their first encounter that was 100% optional.
This is why I should read things.
Sometimes fudging is a good idea, i don't want my players to just die that easily either
You and so many others. 😮💨
I usually would fudge if it’d be a one shot or if it’d help in roleplay/storytelling situations like sometimes on first sessions or first encounters I’d give the players a “head start advantage” lol
So, if i succeed on the attack roll of 13 by having a 14+2 and then i roll a 1d4 for the damage, is the damage instantly applied on the enemy or is there a saving throw for this?
Is it a weapon or some sort of magic?
No saving throws for ordinary attacks.
Correct.
Even if meelee
Yep.
To be really simplistic, a roll happens during an attack in one of two ways: either the attacker rolls to determine if they hit or, in the case of some spells or abilities, the target rolls a saving throw to determine if they evade or otherwise take less (in some cases no) damage.
Never both so far as I'm aware.
Gonna be a stickler here. 😅
If there's ever any question whether something you're doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
If it only involves a saving throw, it isn't technically an attack.
Technically, sure, but if this person is having trouble with the basics, I don't think getting into that is useful.
Which is an important distinction for things like familiars or Invisibility.
Ice knife is an example of both.
The cast makes an attack roll to hit the main target, then all targets in the AoE roll a dex save.
G'day everyone, I'm new to all this. I hope everyone is having an amazing day or night🤙🏻
There are certainly a few with both (att & save) but they are rare, ice knife is an obvious exception, but there are few others. It's generally ok to make this assumption.
4d6kh3 someone help, what are these weird letters-
Roll 4 d6 keep the highest three dice.
Roll four d6’s and keep the highest three.
This is for rolling your character's ability scores.
Yall amazing fr
i figured
I played my first game, a one shot the other day and there was a guy who was kinda doing an anime MC wannabe kinda thing and a dude who just really didn’t wanna talk to anyone besides the DM
It soured my tongue for trying to play again even though I know it shouldn’t are these kinda players common or was this an unlucky first group
You generate your character’s six ability scores randomly. Roll four 6-sided dice and record the total of the highest three dice on a piece of scratch paper.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Nah If I had to guess
Yeah, finding the right group can be a difficult thing.
There will be always players who want to play "lone wolf" / "edgelord" characters who don't work with the rest of the group. This is the type of players a DM should probably try to weed out because D&D is suppose to be a group collaborative game.
And the one who didn't wanna talk, or either was peetty shy, or thought he was cool by being so mysteriousi
Hm I see and yeah I was trying to work together but it was just kinda hard with that guy shouting over everyone because he wanted to do something, are edgelords common?
Hiya folks , newbie here
Hi dad, i'm hungry

General*
This is a channel for newcomers that have questions
Not a chatty chatty channel
A little crowded in there to my liking , but i got the point . Thanks !
Np, you are welcome here!
I do not know if I want to be a DM or a player what do you suggest or should this message be for another chat room.
What interests you about the game? How you answer could point at least a little in one direction or the other. (You can also be both, just in separate groups.)
Hey, i hope this is the right channel for this. Me and 3 friends decided to learn D&D and im gonna be the DM.. but ive never played the game before, let alone DM'd aha so this will be a fun experience. I spent the whole day kind of studying the game, but information doesn't stick easy with me so i think i'll need to take it slow. Is it okay to start small with just a small encounter to kind of 'practice' + bend the rules a little bit?
So far i have a map to play on with unique encounters, npc and rewards. We all have our character sheets but we're not 100% sure how everything works on it. Is there anything else i need to get this going as a DM? It will be a virtual session. Any tips are appreciated as its getting pretty overwhelming for me to be honest aha.
Also, the map i have is just a picture, how do i actually move characters/NPC on it, what do you typically use for that?
I think that's fine. Given that it sounds essentially like a practice session, if things go "wrong," that'll be useful intel for next time. (I think the only "wrong" way to play is to step on someone else's fun.)
You can upload a map to somewhere like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo, and they have tokens. R20 has a bit of a learning curve, but plenty of tutorials are available online.
Sweet, thank you! c:
Thanks for the advice.
Now I only have the problems of time and people to deal with. I may try to do multiple sessions.
@harsh fjord Owlbear rodeo is so easy to use, tysm for that aha.
I was asking sincerely what parts of the game interested you to help you make a decision, but if you feel good where you are, fantastic!
It's what I use for games. I appreciate how no-frills it is.
anyone got some good tips on making a cleric character
How do you typically roll dice with your group?
I trust them, so I don't have a digital solution. There are online dice rooms, and Owlbear has built-in dice.
You'll get more in-depth advice in #1045165827068002374, but Wisdom is your most important stat. Each type of cleric plays differently, so it's worth doing some reading/watching on the different types.
If you have ever heard of it what do you think of fantasy grounds?
You can have a Discord server and have Avrae on the server - that also has the benefit of pulling in sheets from DnDBeyond and allows you to do quick rules lookups, etc.
Haven't used FG myself. I've heard it's decent, but if you're gonna shell out money, Foundry is the best of the lot.
From what I'm told.
Fantasy Grounds I hear has lots of prebuilt automation, but it does cost money.
Foundry is super flexible and the community has tons of modules to do all sorts of amazing things but requires some technical chops to self-host and manage.
Okay thanks for all the help.
Just if I DM a game do you know any creature for dnd like the scute swarm from Magic the Gathering.
I'm not familiar with MtG. You could ask in #dm-discussion or #homebrew. You might get some traction there.
Thanks.

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube
alright, thank you :D
do you need an attack roll if you're shooting an arrow at an object ?
a wooden barrier here
yes and no, objects also have Hit points, AC and possibly immunities and resistances. Its also true that if you have enough time and the right tools, then their is no need to roll for this
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/running-the-game#StatisticsforObjects
ultimately, its for a DM to determin what exactly is required to damage an object
okay, I just wanted to shoot a fire arrow to it (I previously threw an oil flask)
yeah your DM tells you if you need to roll and what happens if you hit. If they arent sure either, they could reference the rules linked above
thanks
also
if you cast a ritual spell
i don't understand if you have to prepare it when you're in combat and wait for 10 minutes without doing anything or if you can prepare it like any other spells
or can you prepare it while fighting like a concentration spell ?
You prepare spells during long rests
so a ritual is like a normal spell in terms of preparation ?
Rituals are spells with an alternative way of casting them that doesn't use spell slots, it just takes longer. The caster must have the spell prepared if they're a prepared caster like cleric, known if they're a spells known caster like bard, or if they're a wizard, in their spellbook
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Rituals
so if I understood it clearly
prepared spells and rituals are basically the same thing but :
-Rituals take longer to prepare
-You don't spend any spell slots when you cast a ritual
prepared spells and rituals are basically the same thing but :
No
Rituals are a tag some spells have that lets you cast them slower (taking longer) instead of spending a spell slot. Prepared spells are something else
A prepared spell is just a way of saying that a certain class character has a spell ready to cast
There are prepared casters such as paladin, cleric, and artificer, who prepare spells fresh after each long rest
There are known casters such as bard and ranger, who learn spells when they level up and are very limited on when they can change those spells, if ever.
Wizard is a weird overlap of both
You can ritual caste a spell with the ritual tag if either
- You're a prepared caster and have the spell prepared
- You're a known spell caster and know the spell
- You're a wizard and the spell is in your spellbook
don't every spells need to be prepared ?
No
Only wizards and prepared casters prepare spells
Known casters such as rangers, bards, eldritch knights, and arcane tricksters know a fixed* list of spells that they add to when they level
*Many have class features that let them swap a small number of spells when they level up
- IF your class has ritual casting then you can cast these spells as rituals instead of using a spell slot.
- You have to have a ritual spell prepared to cast it as ritual, same as any other spell, if you are a prepared caster
- Wizards are an exception to the rule. They prepare spells from their spell book, but their ritual spells dont need to be prepared to be cast as rituals
I’m making my first character, what’s some Druid lore I need to know for the backstory?
Hi hello people i ha e a question is there a race that is half elf half angel or do I make a home brew I have an oc and I want them to be like that
angel as aasimar ?
Druids can vary wildly from place to place and circle to circle and thats if you just follow official forgottem realms lore. Not to mention that you arent necessarily forced to follow official lore at all for any character (consult with a DM in any case on what makes sense in their world)
if you want to get a general vibe of what Druids tend to be about, then I recommend reading the base class description and maybe the description of a druid circle or more https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Druid
it's a race from DnD that could be associated as angels I guess
Hello there I have a character but idk how I'd translate it to dnd
Because backstory 4 foot tall catgirl made a deal with a demon. She gained insane strength and regeneration which halted the aging process. Her weapon of choice is a sword almost twice her height.
How would I translate that to dnd?
Possibly a barbarian, where her rage is drawing upon the power given by the demon
Yea that might work
Tabaxi or Shifter as your race of choice. dont pick small as your size, even though you are 4ft. Small and big swords doesnt mix.
there are very few ways to halt the aging process mechanically before the highest levels of play though, but it shouldnt come up normally since adventures dont take place over years ususally
I agree with barbarian. I am thinking Path of the Zealot to be extra unkillable
what book is the path of the zealot in ?
Xanathars I believe?
yeah
Yep Xanathars Guide to Everything
Hi

hello
Lots of work to do
quastion so i dont understand the summon familiar spell much it shows examples of thing i can summon do i have to choose whats on the list or can it be something else and is there a limit to what i can summon
There's no summon familiar spell
Do you mean find familiar or one of the summon spells?
yes find familiar sorry im a irl barbarian when it comes to magic
Per the rules, you can only have a familiar from the listed creatures, at least as far as mechanics/stat blocks go
Background of the character has her being a few millennia old it's like you summoning a genie wishing for something and he grants your wish while also screwing you over in the worst way possible
I wish I was a millionaire gets crushed by pennies
I basically just need a Regen ability
fighters get a once per short rest regen. shifters can get temp HP a few times per long rest
Hi !
Got a question about multi-classing and cantrips.
I am a Cleric 5 / Warlock 2, I see, on DnDBeyond, that mind sliver inflicts 2d6, taking into account I'm level 7 total, but eldritch blast doesn't take that global level into account (still inflicting 1d10 instead of 2d10 due to having 2 beams since level 5)
Are they working differently or is just not shown correctly by DnDBeyond ?
It shows the damage per beam, which does not change.
You simply get additional beams.
And since those beams can often be directed at separate targets, you'd need separate totals for each.
(You can create a custom action directly on your character sheet if you want to add an all-in-one roll. #ddb-support if you need instructions.)
yeah, if Eldritch blast got more damage dice and more beams, it would be scaling double of what other cantrips get.
Ok thanks, first time playing warlock and it was confusing not to show it upgrading
I don't exactly have a way of buying it but is there a way to make the character on dnd beyond while not buying it
Ok thank you
And has Xanathars*
What do y’all use to plan your campaign… I’m looking for one that’s free lol
The answer to that might depend on how you plan. 😅
What kind of features are you looking for, specifically?
I just need it to let me plan encounters and results of them
Have you tried D&D Beyond's Encounter Builder?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder
I have not but I’ll try it, I just wanted to ask someone here first because they would have more experience then me
There's a guide here that can walk you through it, if you need.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1135-tutorial-how-to-build-encounters-and-run-them-on-d
I don't understand the downtime activity training since it was explained very broadly in the book but like if i spend in game weeks training can i up an ability score ?
No, there's a specific list of things you can train for. Ability score improvement isn't one of them.
Using the Xanathar's Guide to Everything rules, you can train in a language or tool.
Given enough free time and the services of an instructor, a character can learn a language or pick up proficiency with a tool.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/downtime-revisited#Training
The DMG also suggests offering training as a potential mission reward (rather than as a regular downtime activity). It has a number of suggested topics, including a skill proficiency or a feat.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/other-rewards#Training
I suppose if you got training in the right feat, you could increase an ability score. 🤔
But ultimately, downtime activities as a whole are pretty dependent on the DM. They'd be the best person to ask.
Hello I’m excited to be in this community and I’m dming for my friends and it’s wonderful I’m having so much fun and so are they 3rd session this month and going strong we try to make it a every Saturday thing and it’s going good so far coming up with a mini boss rn for them to fight and it’s looking good

I've read that, but I feel it doesn't answer some questions, like are druids moreso loners, or do they live together in these 'circles'? what powers do they actually have that I can make use of? what makes someone become a druid, is it like a gift you're born with, something you have to train for, or can anyone pick up a druid's staff and instantly become one? what entails a druid's staff?
That's up to you to decide, probably with your DM and their campaign setting lore.
As for powers, you can get some sense of that from the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid
Beyond that, you'd need access to the books themselves, physically or digitally.
Is https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page official information?
Try asking #dnd-lore as well?
I wasn't sure if they were open to questions or moreso in-depth lore discussion
Especially from someone who's knowledge is playing badly once when I was 10, and like 2 days of browsing dndbeyond
It has references to the Forgotten Realms (and other campaign settings) material from all editions (there's around 100 years gap between the Forgotten Realms timeline of 3E and 5E).
Hi! I'm not really new to d&d, I have been playing for about a year now, both as a player and a DM. I have made few homebrews and stuff, but me and my IRL group decided to make a really big campaign, and they want ME to be the DM. I really like the idea of having alot of stuff preplanned because I'm both a perfectionist and I stress alot if i don't have stuff pre-planned (all qualities a DM probably shouldn't have I know). I want to create a world with alot of stuff planned (I have like 2 months to prepare), and I need help on all things I should prepared for each continent/country/town and other stuff.
Maybe ask this in #dm-discussion ? Also you may find it easier to use a written adventure and just add in your own tweaks to customize and fit the game your group would like to play. Saves a lot of time and work.
Ah, thanks! I'll ask there then. Tbf I didn't really think of using pre-written adventures to "steal" stuff from. 😅
I highly recommend it as a super busy adult with lots of other responsibilities. Also I recommend Sly Flourishes’ Lazy DM guides (3rd party books). Great tips for making your prep time as simple and efficient as possible.
oh, time doesnt bother me much, im a highschooler, and since i finished writing a thesis after like 4 months of work i can actually take some time off and do some dnd projects just like this. But yeah, looking at other peoples work will save alot of time and might even give me some of my own ideas. Thanks!
Can i still use flurry of blows if my attack action fails?
Yes
You just have to take the Attack action, you don’t necessarily have to hit
Alr thanks
Just got the dungeon masters guide yay
Do enemjes have their own limited spell slots?
Hey, It's been awhile since I've done dnd and I've been meaning to start from scratch again and join a dnd game with others. So I kinda just forgot the basics.
D&D Beyond has a lot of tools for you to use, and makes it pretty straightforward and simple. They even have a Mobile app for all your characters you want to make for easy viewing.
its been awhile sense ive played like awhile and i forgot what to do… any tips?
Watch some actual plays on YouTube or Twitch?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
is there any specific benefits for choosing specific familiars types like fey celestial fiend etc
does it do something?
some spells and abilities interact with those types, divine sense or forbiddance
its mostly for RP purpose otherwise
hiyo
Check out #find-a-game - it has instructions on how to do that. Then use #1075498333705089084 to send the command.
Is it common to allow spellcasters to prepare spells in a session 0? Im about to embark on an adventure with new players, myself being a new DM and I am not sure if I should tell players to prepare spells before the adventure kicks off or not
yeah they should have spells prepare when they start so why wait till the game already started?
Thanks 🙂

There's so much to go through, I might take a bit-
I actually have a character in mind I want to use but I don't know enough about stats and such yet to write them a sheet yet.
If you need any help, lmk
I can walk you through a character creation
May I dm you?
Sure!!
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

very new player (havent played yet) just bought a starter set and player hand book and some dice from a local brick and mortar
signed up for DnD beyond aswell
i watched as an established group played through a session and it looked really fun, i however dont know anyone that would be interested in playing and was advised through googling that DnD beyond would be the place to find maybe an online group to play with
There are a lot of good places online to look for games. This server is a good a place to start as any, it's not as simple as posting though.
There are plenty of websites online to find games: reddit r/lfg, roll20 lfg search has a checkbox "games that welcome new players", fantasygrounds forums has an LFG section, dbdbeyond forums, crawlr, tabletopwizard, etc. There are many other discord servers to find games in too: r/lfg discord, dbdbeyond discord (you are here), altrole, critical role, the tavern, adventurers league hub, etc. ALSO consider a paid game (eg: on [startplaying dot games] site search for "beginners welcome"), the quality of paid games is usually worth it.
Finding a local game is sometimes the surest way to get into a game. Check libraries, colleges, and game stores, also try searching facebook and other online spaces for local groups (eg: "Chicago D&D").
Or, considering there are FAR more players than DMs (Dungeon Masters) out there, you might try gathering some players looking to play and try your hand at DM-ing, there are a lot of DMs here willing to help/advise/tutor new DMs. And the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure is easy to run and free online
what does druid circle do?(im new so break it down for me)
It is like a "path" as every class have for you to choose the type os gameplay and build you will have to your character (in that case, a Druid)
A druid circle is just the generic name for druid sub-class.
yeah
like every other class
can someone help me make my character
Much like oath is the generic name for a paladin sub-class.
in a vc
Did you read the first four chapters of the free Basic Rules yet?
im new so all of it
Well, you should start there.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

im so confused
D&D beyond is the digital toolset for D&D, the game.
ik
so what confuses you? Maybe we can help
its alot to process and my little brain is gettin overwhelmed
kinda like when you have 30 minutes to clean the whole house and its a mansion
i get it, this is a somewhat complicated game, not the most complicated of its kind but not the easiest either
What's the rush? Read and comprehend the rules at your own pace. Again, the video tutorials are easier to digest than walls of text.
After you read it over feel free to ask questions here.
i dont want to ask too much
I have some time to answer questions. Wanna hop into vc?
ls
yeas pls

No specifically on this server. You may be better off looking via a web search for "D&D in <location>" and see what shows up.

Oh voicechat is locked to new folks on the server - there's a 24 hour cooldown.
god damnit
ah nm I'll dm ya

Even I use that series as I always forget how to roll stats and I've been playing years. You can go years without creating another character, then once it comes down to it you need it. But yeah, really good resource and to the point.
As it should be given how intense the rules and mechanics can get if you're just starting out. As some resources can really lay it down fat.
Is there a way to search for a D&D game based on location?
I'm in the character creation for dnd beyond but it says no results found for kobold
Do I have to use the marketplace for that?
I'm wondering if there's just a complete series you can get instead of buying an individual book for each different campaign world
Some books come bundled, like with Spelljammer you could get 3 books all together, but for the most part, no sadly you have to buy the books individually
Or buy the DnDBeyond legendary bundle…
wasn't even thinking of that honestly 😛 was thinking physical books 😛
I guess I was just thinking of a bunch of books all together. Though that would probably be in the bundles
I'll look into it once on more invested in a game
and when I'm less broke oof
Hi I’m trying to create a character but I’m a bit lost with how to put in the right stats and equipment, can someone coach me through it
sure, though I'm afraid you may not get the answer you like exactly. Different DMs do different methods of creation, and a character created in one way might not be something another DM wants.
Are you doing point buy, rolling, or standard array?
I’m trying rolling
nod alright. Just so you know, most DMs won't accept a character that they haven't personally witnessed being rolled
but it's good to practice all the same
And I also need help with all the equipment and traits of my class and race
Can help with that 🙂
I’m making a bard harengon (rabbitfolk)
So, when rolling stats, there are different methods. The most common one is to roll 4d6, drop the lowest number, and then assign the stats as you wish
Okay thank you very much
Ok I would like to join a group as a new player

what command would you recommend
These are the channels to find a group. I suggest looking in #looking-for-players and responding to a post in the thread attached to a game that interests you.
nod once you have your stats, you just put them where you think would be best. Charisma and Dexterity tend to be the two highest bard stats, but you could go charisma and intelligence or...well charisma and anything, really
Ok how long do I have to be In the server to be able to join the vc
24 hours
Ok
let me know when you're ready and we can talk about equipment and class abilities 🙂
Are you comfortable to do it in vc?
Hmm...if vc is easier for you then yes I can do that
Cool, can I call you?
yes, go ahead

im just stuck and need someone to speak me through

im really looking for that and someone who can talk to me about it and talk me through the process
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Give me an half hour to an hour and I can talk you through it
i cant atm because im gmt time i can do tomorrow tho
I can do it tomorrow
ok great!
A lot depends on what kind of ranger you plan to be, honestly
those are the standards though
Wisdom is important since its your spellcasting stat and strength or dex is also important, you should choose one
Choosing strength or dex depends on the build you want to do
Example: Strength would be more important if you want your ranger to use a sword and shield and dex would be better for an archery focused build
Did not know that wisdom one
Most my stats are like even
I actually got a 7 descending roll on my stats
If they’re even, that’s also fine!!!
Yeah
I wanna join a campaign other than my school one
It’s fun but I want more experiences, I’m excited
I just started getting interested in trying to play. i bought the players handbook to read through to understand the basic rules
It all started when I found myself looking at cool Dice. That escalated quickly.
I just realized I don’t own it
Buuuuuuut my teacher and a friend of mine just kinda explained stuff to us
Nope, I should get that though

I have a metal dice set, I hope it’s not rigged otherwise I love it.
Oh god, I only read the toc
And oh god
I got a set of copper dice. they are way heavier than I expected
What brand?
They were from Amazon DNDND
I think I have the exact same set then
I expected mine to be as heavy as they are
Not videos!!! T~T
I generally prefer written content, myself. 😅
I think they meant they wanted to watch videos.
I know
I’m not good with videos tbh
My first attempt to join a campaign failed
So far I have a 0% success rate lol
Not good odds
Yeah, it can take some time to find a good fit.
Yeah
I’m confident I’ll join some
I need to find a group ok with a complete newbie.
I’d except you lol
It’s more of an age thing that dwindles my confidence
Fair enough.
Hi I’m new here and trying to see if I could join a one shot. Is there somewhere I should go to do this?
People post in there if they need more players for campaigns or one shots
Thank you
Np
This is definitely gonna tank self esteem
I knowwww, buts it’s hard to read “[something that sounds like a great campaign] 18+
Or whatever+ that’s older than I
• I’ve been on the dnd beyond forums for a bit
• I don’t have friends XD
• I am in an elective for dnd but it’s very flexible with rules and we have gotten things wrong a lot so I wanna get more experiences
Yeah but experience would help
fellas how do I properly rp without being cringy?
Oh sorry I totally forgot about that
Here’s the thing, you don’t
Or it just kinda happens
I'm very concerned about it since Im the kind of guy who would look back at the rp logs and cringe at it lmao
It looked like reading and I’ll read, just if I know exactly what to read, I’m better with conversations.
Oh yeah totally
But be yourself
Then you can be cringy and not even realize it
still that might cause me to break my character
It was mostly a joke lol
not saying it's entirely bad, it's pretty fun to look back at those logs
