Hmmmmm what anime style do u draw in and do u post ur art anywhere ?
I have other stuff I am focusing on
hopefully that doesnt count as shameless promotion
You can post your D&D art in #dnd-arts-and-crafts , and also promote yourself in #dnd-advertisements !
Ah yes thank you Daniel. I didn't intend to promote here. I was answering questions
I will use that channel next time.
there you go I posted it in #dnd-advertisements
I feel like I should ask, I don't any art that is reminiscent of the DnD really, I do have fantasy there though.
will that get me banned or am I safe?
Oh I wasn’t accusing you of promoting yourself in the wrong channel. Just letting you know where it was if you ever wanted to try and get some commissions.
yeah sure, I misunderstood
The mods generally ask that your art be related to or recognizeably D&D.
I mean I do have a druid and a fire gloves brawler
That sounds D&D related
would you mind if I ask 2-3 more questions?
Go for it.
Okay, so I watched the video about the basic gameplay and the "theater of mind". But here I'm seeing people referring to something called Roll20
do everyone play on that?
Not everyone. It’s a really popular virtual table top (VTT) for showing maps and monster tokens for those who don’t prefer theater of the mind (TotM).
Other VTTs include Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo, and Talespire.
Is there any way, I can start as an assistant to any DMs? it's very daunting to try to do a whole story myself. or do you suggest I play as a player first?
I have previous experience of making maps and stories
That’s up to you! You can sometimes join in as a “co-DM” where the DM can offload smaller aspects of the game for you to run, while also having someone to rely on for questions.
In other cases, you can gather a group of friends who are okay with you learning and making mistakes without taking advantage of you. That’s how I learned to DM.
I have a character that I would like to share if that sounds good
The DM is a player too but they have to manage the story, the NPCs, the monsters, and figure out what rules apply and what rolls are needed. So it can a bit more complicated and intense but if you have the energy and desire, go for it.
Can I create a game that lasts 1 hour or less?
We have #1045166392174972938 which is more optimal for character discussions
thats very useful
Maybe? On average most D&D sessions last 2-4 hours. Obviously some can be shorter and some can be longer.
Yes, I will learn more and see what I can
ohh 4 hours wow. okay
let me tell you about 12 hour sessions 😉
haha
I am not a native english speaker, I just hope people will be a bit patient with me during the stories
8 hour shopping session let’s goooooooo
I have many more questions, but I will not exhaust you guys. Thanks for all the advice.
hellooo
Hello there
If someone like a hexblade or a champion gets disadvantage on attack rolls how does that work ?
Does it not effect them or does it remove their improved crits
They just get disadvantage on their attack roll meaning they roll twice and take the lower roll. That’s all.
I have been looking at the rules and I felt like "why do people call dota 2 complicated?"
this page is a lot of help. Thanks
D&D is actually somewhat fairly simple at the core mechanics level:
For attacks you roll a d20 and add any modifiers and bonuses - if it is higher than the target's AC (or you roll a natural 20 before any bonuses/modifiers), you hit.
For skill checks you roll a d20 and add any bonuses and modifiers - if it is higher than the DC threshold established by the DM, you succeed.
yeah
But then it gets complicated (or deep) as you add in different class features and skills or magical effects or situational context.
its exciting though, trying to figure out the game
as a DM, I believe you can make monsters and npcs with different abilities
can the players do the same with heroes, customized classes and races?
You can - although as a new DM I would recommend stying mostly with core stuff until you have a better feel for the game system and how it's balanced.
yeah true
That can help you when you do start customizing/tweaking things to ensure that your stuff fits in and works well for your games.
Okay, I will stop stressing out and actually do a game.
not gonna know how hard it is unless I try
You might try a prewritten adventure (Lost Mines of Phandlvar is free on DnDBeyond) to see how to build an adventure/campaign.
okay I will check that out
what do suggest I use? roll20
Anyone know how to find campaigns?
Check out the #find-a-game for helpful info on how to use the #looking-for channels to find a group to play with.
I don’t want paid since can’t afford that and only option says paid
Only if you need to use Virtual Tabletop to run your game. Honestly I'd suggest using just Discord and theater of the mind (describe the scenes) to start with.
There are lots of groups that don't require payment.
Okayy.. I have asked alot from you today. Thanks man

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me test my connection. I want to get into playing and know that Discord is a common platform for D&D. so I thought a quick trail was in order.
Have you read over #find-a-game?
It’s all paid
Untrue. Only #paid-looking-for-game is for paid games. The others are for unpaid games.
There’s no free ones when I viewed
Then you're in the wrong channel
#looking-for-players, #750812887697588356, and #looking-for-community are all free.
Alright thanks
And if you see anything that's paid in those channels please let the mods know ( #1067223029861580831).
Gonna be a pain finding a campaign in mute so most tend to not want me
So text only?
You might be interested in play-by-post games. They occasionally pop up here, but there are other sites that speicalize in them.
That could add a bit of a challenge but look for "play by post" (PBP) games.
The DnDBeyond forums has a section devoted to play by post games
You should also search Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
I’m going to my first campaign this Wednesday, anyone got tips?
Player or DM?
Every play by post I’ve tried has a session 0 then everyone ghosts the dm
I’ve no idea why they were a good session
So I try to avoid play by post because this has happened around 9 times in a row
There are a few text to speech discord bots
Depends on the group youll find something be patient
No one does est nore 5E 😭
I’ve been looking over a year
I'm so sad
It’s honestly getting really discouraging for me
@balmy igloo are you est?
Yeah
I’m mute tho so that limits you
I've had the same issue expect non do the newest formate and I'm a new player
Would you be able to type in chat?
Then it's better to try them not try at all :))
Problem is they keep ghosting the dms
As long as I'm able to know what you're doing as my team member it should be fine
The rolling doesn't matter the mute part effects the rp more but when doing the rp there shouldn't be an issue as you can look at chat
The main issue I have is most of its 18+
@balmy igloo I know of a text based game. If you’d be interested I can ask about spots?
Spots?
In the game. Idk if it’s full or not as I’m new.
Oh
But I could ask for you?
I often get put in with old people lol
Some adults don’t play with minors for various reasons I’ve found. Which I get.
Yeah
Player, Srry forgot to respond
Hey, in completely brand new to the game. I have a basic understanding of the rules. What system should I use? Like dnd beyond or makerspace
I need off week end campaigns and I can’t find any text only and day weeks
Very annoying
Well DnDBeyond is the official digital toolset for D&D 5th edition… but use whatever works well for you.
Alr, thanks friend
I do wanna say I'm also having issues with the links for "looking-for-community" chat
Doesn't wanna load the Dyno.gg
Check the #find-a-game - it has more info that may help.
I can’t make a post for looking for dm
Make sure your Discord is up to date - we’ve heard of some folks having issues because they were on an outdated Discord client.
Have you posted previously? You have to wait until the bot deletes your previous posting before you can post again.
I haven’t posted
Do you have embeds enabled in Discord? Check out #find-a-game for more info about that.
Embeds?
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else.
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
Thank you
I’ve a question to ask it’s about a situation with one in the party
The player is a personal friend to the dm so this makes it even harder
I’ve noticed they’ve spoken over the dm and everyone else many times they hide their rolls and never fail unless it’s something very minor they clearly used 3 magic items when combined breaks the game should be end game stuff
And they’ve been trying to get the dm to change the game when things don’t work for him even to the point he got the dm to change the size of a whole building so he could climb it
What’s your question with this situation?
Should they be removed from the party
When confronted about hiding his dice rolls he got very defensive and told the dm he won’t be moved on this matter you won’t get anywhere with it
And I mean very defensive
This is my favorite take on problematic behavior in RPGs. https://i.imgur.com/EwiChyD.png
hey everyone, is spectating a session something that can be done?
They said if something isn to done they want him gone
But dm doesn’t want to touch him (I know it’s because it’s a personal friend)
I have listened in on sessions and had others sit in on my sessions, so yeah, it’s possible.
It’s online and we use a bot he rolls physical and refuses to show
I don’t even hear dice rolling
I agree with the chart: if communication doesn’t work and no one is willing to compromise, you need to decide if it’s worth dealing with or finding a new group.
He’s to the point the dm wants to change enemies or add ones just to counter the character and his items but then throws us off balance because we get countered as well
i'd like to listen in on a session, but I don't know where can I do it

At level 2 he had items to have a 17dc scales with dex and is uncapped as well that’s more then even our barian
He’s also asking for magic items not even looking for them
Again, if communication fails to result in change or compromise, then you may need to cut your losses. I don’t know if you have many other options aside from those.
thanks:)
I got no other campaigns can’t find one to
Everyone but the one player are great people and works well together
He keeps saying oh well that’s just a bit or some humor that ain’t a bit or humor to me
hey @harsh fjord , could I dm you?
The adage “no D&D is better than bad D&D” applies here. You don’t have to follow that advice, of course.
True
Thanks, but no.
But since he’s a personal friend he doesn’t want to make him mad
Removing him from the campaign even tho it’s a 3 player concern against 1 seems fair
Also rule lawyering
I could go on more of what he did bottom line might need to leave if this keeps up
I’m inclined to agree. The particulars don’t matter so much (in my eyes) as an unwillingness to listen and possibly change behavior. That, to me, is a bad player.
As far as I see he’s trying to manipulate not just gameplay but the dms choices
Like if he was a co dm or something
first time DM'ing for new players, any tips to make it more enjoyable for them?
Always being firm is good
A firm dm helps keep problems from happening which in long run makes it more enjoyable
Make sure everyone is on the same page as far as game style, appropriate player behavior, handling disagreements, and then focus on fun. The game should be a safe place to have fun with friends.
Also say it’s nice to tell the party to be balanced
If they just run all dps they will most likely get wrecked
Healing potions are always a thing but get costly using it that much
yeah
Feel free to check out #dm-discussion for more input from fellow DMs
Odd looking for dm is still not working for me
thanks!
how much gold should a lvl 4, halfling, way of mercy monk start with?
Won’t let me post
I haven’t posted before and my discord is up to date
I’m confused
- Conduct a session zero.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions.
- You'll make mistakes. Accept that, and learn from them.
- Prepare, but realize you'll get curveballs all the time. Be ready to improv.
- Don't try to avoid failure. That's impossible. Instead learn from it.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations.
Are there any spells that are basically mage hand but more attached to your body with weapons?
I read your posts. I think the whole group should rally together and bring theif concerns to the DM. Put him on the spot. Give the DM an ultimatum. If he doesn't get the problem player to stop his behavior or kick him out, you all leave.
It sucks when its a personal friend but this "friend" is taking advantage of that status and walking all over everyone
This is excellent
Yeah
Hi, me and my friends are newcomers and we're trying to understand archetypes. Using dndbeyond u can only get more by buying them right? Is there no other way of making a character with a different archetype?
Only a small number of subclasses are available without purchasing anything.
What would i need to buy to unlock subclasses for rogue?
Depends on the subclass. They're contained in various books. You can also buy subclasses individually.
PHB has Thief, Assassin, and Arcane Trickster
Tasha's has Phantom and Soulknife
Xanathar's has Inquisitive, Mastermind, Scout, and Swashbuckler
If you're using D&D Beyond you can just buy the individual sub-class rather than then entire book.
I am struggling to find that, could u link me the individual sub class in the store?
Nvm found it
Go to the Marketplace, click on a book, and it'll list all of the individual items (or bundles) you can buy.
Help please
That's pretty non-specific - what do you need help with exactly?
Everything I have basically no knowledge about how to make a character or how to even play
Ah so new to D&D? Well this is a good place to start. First off I recommend taking a look at the pinned message here in this channel. It has lots of good links to help get you started.
After giving those a read/watch, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
on dnd beyond trying to choose tempest domain and not appearing am i being stupid?
Do you own the Players Handbook on DnDBeyond? You'll need that (or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled) to be able to use that subclass in the builder.
Or you can purchase that subclass individually for $1.99: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook (scroll down to the individual purchase options)
i have a campaign with content sharing enabled
And you're building that character inside that campaign?
idk how to do that on the phone
Hmmm I'm not sure you can. I'd use the website to do that.
You go to the Campaign page and create a character there. Otherwise you will need to transfer your character to that campaign.
yeah went on just google app to make the character then can edit it
being on phone makes it difficult
Where can I purchase the changeling race? I can't find it anywhere
I can buy individual stuff from different books but use them all on the same character right?
So if i buy changeling from monsters of the multiverse and phantom rogue from another book, i can make a phantom changeling rogue right?
Sick, this new campaign is gonna be a blast
With my DM?
Yup.
I tried using the dyno link in the looking for dm channel, but it gives me an 500 error message. What do I do?
Which link specifically?
Can you pick more than one feat while lvling up? For example could i have shadow touched and lucky?
nope, it's either a stat increase or one feat
And that's only at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, I think
So i pick one feat level 4 and then 8,12,16..... I keep picking stats?
I thought you were asking if you can take more than one feat at a time while leveling 😛
Do you have to buy the guides to play as a certain race?
Technically all you need to play is the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
But if you want more class options, then yes, you need to buy the books (or the individual options via DnDBeyond) or have access to them through a DnDBeyond campaign with shared content enabled.
If you like the game, the Players Handbook is a good purchase.
I think the changeling race sounds cool but i would have to purchase another handbook to play as one?
On D&D Beyond specifically, you could buy just the changeling race alone.
But generally speaking, yes, you’d need the full book.
If i go to a place with people who have said handbook would i be able to learn the things about it
Probably
Ok nice
I checked out the PHB from my local library when I was getting started.
Ah they have it a libraries cool
Ok ill check
There is guides to playing as them online
I don’t really understand how charisma and stuff works
Oh shiii, that's sick tyty
Charisma is one of your 6 Abilities which define your basic character.
The others being Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom
Charisma is basically social skills
You use one of several methods of generating Ability Scores which will generally be a number between 3-18.
This Ability Score also gives you a resulting Ability Bonus, which is used as a modifier to various dice you roll to determine whether or not actions you want your chracter to take succeed or nor.
that is, of course, assuming that a DM allows feats. They are an optional rule though most DMs use them
Strength - how strong you are - used of lifting things, jumping, and making most melee attacks like swinging a sword
Dexterity - how nimble you are - used for being stealthy, acrobatic, and making ranged attacks like shooting a bow
Constitution - how tough you are, used for resisting poison, fatigue, and the Bonus adds to your Hit Points (health points)
Intelligence - how smart you are, used for remembering things, knowledge, and useful for some spell casters
Wisdom - how in touch with your surroundings and nature you are, used for perception, "reding the room," and also useful for some spellcasters
Charisma - how much force of personality you can exert, good for convincing people to do/think what you want them to, also useful for some spellcasters
Do you role a dice to determine the stats?
Ok cool
So I roll a 17 and I roll a 14 I can put 17 in dex if I’m a rogue or something
What dice do you use
The standard rolling method for stats is to roll 4 d6 and drop the lowest, but your DM may have different houserules
You use 4 d6 dice, roll it, and drop the lowest dice roll.
4d6, and then add the highest three together, discarding the lowest of the four.
Ah
(Also don’t do this without a DM present.)
You can take either standard array or point-buy if you wanna practice making a character tho.
What does that mean
Standard array is a set of predetermined numbers. 15, 14, 12, 10, and 8. You can put those wherever you want in whatever order.
Point-buy gets you a similar level of power, but with more customizeability.
(And more complexity)
Yeah rolling is always tempting…until you get two 7s, an 11, a 12, and two 8s. :<
Or until someone else gets 3 18s and suddenly thinks they're the main character
Standard array is probably the quickest/simplest method
But then with races you get bonus stats right
I like point buy myself but all methods can be fun depending on what you're looking for
If you just want to start making a character to learn how the process works, using standard array is probably your best bet
correct, yes, which go on top of those numbers
Ok nice
Race will give you a +2 and a +1 to ability scores of your choice
Some races might do that slightly differently
Also that varies depending on which version of the rules you're using
I saw that changelings get +2 charisma and plus 1 of 2 other stats i think
Do keep in mind that these racial Ability Score bonuses are applied to the Score, not the Bonus
So if you start with a Charisma Score of 15, then get a +2 from your race, it's now 17, it's not added to the Ability Bonus of +2 that you'd get from having an Ability Score of 15, though this would raise your Ability Bonus to +3.
I recognize that this is a little confusing.
There are two numbers associated with your Abilities.
Ability Score - a number, usually between 3-18. These are the numbers listed in the Standard Array or the numbers you'd generate by rolling dice
Ability Bonus - a number derived from your Ability Score which is applied to dice rolls.
If your Ability Score is 10-11, your Ability Bonus is +0
If your Ability Score is 12-13, your Ability Bonus is +1
If your Ability Score is 8-9, your Ability Bonus is -1
If my character is encumbered is the only solution to take things out of my inventory?
These + and - are added to dice rolls you make in the game to try to do things
Yes
Hmm. I created a character and it says encumbered. Idk if I can leave anything
You can hand them to other people, hire people to carry your stuff. There are also a couple magic items in the game, such as a Bag of Holding, which allow you to carry lots of stuff without the weight mattering.
Many groups choose not to use the encumbrance rules, but many do. You'd want to discuss the matter with your DM.
Is there just a set limit for everyone? What is it?
Depends on your Str score
Ohhh. Mine is 8, is that the problem?
Your carrying capacity is your Str score multiplied by 15 (in pounds)
Maybe I should up it. Point buy is so confusing.
If you carry weight in excess of 5 times your Str score, you are encumbered
You should def check with your DM to see if they're using the encumbrance rules
They are, from what I remember. I’ll reask though and see if they have ideas. Thanks.
If they are using the rules, then they want equipment to matter more. You should evaluate whether or not some of your stuff can be dropped
The heavy things I have are crowbar, mace, bedroll
On the subject of dropping things, also keep in mind that you could have some stuff in a bag that you''ve got in your hand, which you then drop before combat starts making you no longer encumbered.
Do you need the crowbar?
There's a good possibility that someone else will have one
If not, you might give it to them
Idk, I haven’t even had session 0, it just says on my sheet that I’m encumbered
Well, ask your DM
If eliminating the crowbar makes you no longer encumbered, then that's a good thing to drop.
Do keep in mind though that gaining treasure in the future will lead to you becoming encumbered again
That makes sense
I only have 1 friend who wants to get into D&D so i can’t really start a party so that’s annoying
lol, ok
Find a party online, that’s what I did after my friends got too busy.
Bam, new friends and fun d&d
I usually ignore the encumbrance rules for beginner players
I am a newbie - UK GMT where do I start?
But that's me

Yeah I hate inventory management in Skyrim so I bet I’ll dislike this.
Also check #find-a-game for info on how to use the #looking-for channels
thank you
To a certain degree, D&D has always been a game of resource management.
And even if you're not bothering with equipment management, you will be dealing with some resource management - spell slots, how many times you can use a given ability before you need to rest, etc.
As a teenager who lives in a village in the middle of nowhere its a bit tough to find people who live in my area
Ok sorry
Thats better
Play online?
Idk it sounds kinda hard to focus online
Im in a server for a place in my local town/city
And the guy said he could set up a party for younger people who are getting into it
So that would be nice
I agree
Yeah its like a proper shop
And you can rent tables for really cheap
Next time im there ill go in and say id appreciate it if he set one up
is it just me or is it really difficult to find sessions or DM's for compleate begginers? like is that normal that i it takes me 5 days around o clock serching and still didnt find anything?
This is my account im gonna use here since discord is being well annoying
hey friends, i picked up dragons of stormwreck isle as a complete noob to read it and run it for my friends. But ive run into some questions. The info the players are given about the isle pre story for example talks about how 3 metallic dragons imprisoned a red dragon on the ocean floor. But if my players for example ask how that dragon could have survived underwater, or why they imprisoned the dragon instead of killing it i would have no idea what to awnser? Is this one of those moments where you can just invent something yourself and/or say its due to magic? Thanks!
I just say that the mettalic dragons have a item that repeats casting water breathing

A dm tells me ranger is unplayable without new book of rules and changes
I was told by dms ranger can be broken in right hands like any class
Any class can become OP under the right (or should I say wrong) conditions.
And any class can be underwhelming likewise.
Is it just me or do martial classes seem.. A little bland? I was going through my characters and noticed that my wizards and sorcerers had much more options that seemed fun and more damage dealing while martials seem to be just "and then I hit again"
Apart from monk and fighter with the superior points
Really depends on the context - D&D is very much about "context matters".
martial characters tend to be one-trick ponies in battle, this is true.
great single target damage. attacks, things that affect these attacks. that's martials in battle for you
i would not call it "bland" but from the mechanics point of view. they are totally "i attack and i attack again" most of the time
What does the rogue class actually do?
Rogues do two things well (in general).
-Lots of skills
-Lots of single-target damage if they get the right setup
Maneuverability is another thing they do well
Like whats the form of combat that they have in the game
Like rangers use bows and stuff
I mean rangers use all martial weapons
Do you mean rogues?
no, I mean rangers. They don't just use bows
Oh ok but thats like their main form of combat
They can also fight with two weapons. They can use all sorts of swords and such
Eh...not really. It's the stereotype is all.
Rogues get to use a variety. Primarily short bows, rapiers, short swords, and daggers but can use other simple weapons too
that said if you're an elf you can use a long bow as a rogue
since elves get proficiency
I think that im not gonna be an elf
entirely reasonable, there are plenty of other good races to be too
Hey guys I’m a total newcomer, I got the starter set with the Lost mine of phandelver, it’s only my girlfriend and I that are wanting to play together, but we don’t have a dungeon master and the idea of a random real person dictating our game makes me kind of uncomfortable, I was wondering if y’all know of anything like an Ai generated dm or anything of the similar concept like and online bot to be our dm? Sorry for the novel everyone and I appreciate your help in advance!! 🙂
AI is very limited because it doesn't know the adventure. You need to feed it as much detail in the prompts, which obviously will give you meta knowledge of the game (aka cheating).
Why not find a friend or two who are also new to D&D?
I appreciate the feedback! We want to run adventurous just the two of us and there’s definitely no one around my area that is willing to start, my local card shop has dnd nights and I’d like to start going but I’d also like to run an adventure or two with just her and I so we can get the feel of it all if that makes sense
Okay, as Dunl mentioned suggested using sidekicks is your best option then to fill out the party roles.
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_Sidekicks.pdf
Let's not start with exploits.
You guys are the best I really appreciate it
Dunl feel free to dm me if you want to possibly get some games going, I play alot of other games as well
No worries I appreciate you’re help!
Do you guys have any tips on filling out character sheets? I have an idea of a character but I’m missing my beginners guide. Is there some kind of nice website that makes it easy? You can ping if you have answer
Thats what the dndbeyond character creator is for
Can you get new action points? Like I’m a sorcerer but I only have 1 action and a bonus and
Brand new to DND, I’ve done one campaign 2 years ago and want to get into it more but am super nervous meeting new people
Not really - you have movement, bonus action, action, and reaction. Fighters get action surge which gives you a second action but it's only once per short rest.
same! im always down to play and learn
Alright thank you:) just figuring stuff out
What do i use percentile dice for?
They’re not used that often, to be honest.
Mostly for random selections in a table of items, events, etc.
Random encounters and some special effects (wild magic surge) and sometimes treasure rolls
The trinkets table, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SampleTrinkets
Yeah, Divine Intervention.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#DivineIntervention-123
Well new to all the things here! I have read up on DND & I am interested in getting started how should I go about that?
If I could get like a DMs say on that, Also yes new new lol
There’s supposed to be a bot pop-up with that command, but it’s also in the pinned comment in this channel.
If you know the rules and how to make a character, the next step is to find a group.
?looking
Yup! That is the plan
Oh good, the bot is very down.
Lol! Well I can see the pinned message!
Check #find-a-game for how to find others players/DMs.
Sweet! Thanks guys
So I have a 7 set of die and have a character on the ready, is there anything else I need to get into a campaign?
A group, head to #looking-for-players or find a local game store https://locator.wizards.com/
Thanks alot! 👍
Hey guys 🙂 new here
Same! I just joined xx
Used to play DND with my friends in Holland but really loose style playing
Like a bottle of wine and 14 hours of talking and making up songs on the spot for my bard kinda thing
Always enjoyed it though
Looking forward to getting into the community :)\
Do you guys play online over zoom or something or actually live local games?\

Variety. Some people play online, others in person. Whatever works best for you or whatever you can find.
Thanks ❤️
fair enough. I'm living in Thailand these days so not sure where I can play. Are there community sites or anything to play?

In addition to the LFG channels here, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
I've never played a structured game like Roll20
Always been more conversational base
Is it more common to do the structured base?
I've never played D&D before, but I'd like to give it a try someday. The thing is I don't get out much and I don't know anyone that plays D&D. Though I've heard there are now ways where you can play it online. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do that?
You can find games on here, or sites like Roll20. Just ask if they are okay with new players and search until you find a group that’s a good fit.
Check out the channels linked above here:

Hey y'all. Quick question. I made one of the NPC characters for a campaign I'm in because I like to practice character creation. I was under the impression that I could put her in the campaign as unassigned and the DM would be able to claim her. The character is still on my list and I only have 6 character slots. Is there a way to give up the character to the DM and get my slot back?
Ah. Well, I'll probably end up getting a subscription then
Thanks!
You can always print out the character sheets to free up slots.
This is a good primer for playing online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Genasi can change their element on a long rest. If I did that, would I lose my fire capabilities and trade them for other ones?
How does that work?
Maybe getting eladrin mixed up?
Yes. Yes I am.
My character was a summer eladrin and I just changed it to a fire genasi
It can’t jump to fire genasi. Those are two separate races.
If you’re no longer an eladrin then you’d no longer have the features being an eladrin grants.
Yeah. I just got confused.
However, apparently this was a thing in 4e? https://dnd4.fandom.com/wiki/Extra_Manifestation
Hello! I'm a completely new middle-aged player/dm that has decided to try D&D with his wife, and his wife's 70yo uncle and 68yo aunt. Everyone is new, but we have created characters already, and are going through the rules and such. Would it be better to create a little one-shot to ease our way into this, or should we just plunge into something like the Lost Mine of Phandelver?
I say go with a one-shot. LMoP is a bigger commitment, and no one knows yet if they like it.
Plenty of free ones are available, and you don't need to feel like they can take one session. My first few one-shots ran for three sessions.
Yes, that was a feat in 4E Forgotten Realms Player's Guide
I was reading over the Lost Mine and although you have options, I thought it was just big, well for first timers. So was leaning into the one-shot idea. I'll look into some one-shots to try. Thank you.
Candlekeep Mysteries is an anthology of one-shot/short adventures.
I still plan on giving it a try, but figured something smaller to start. Just to get acclimated to the rules and then hope that folks still want to continue. Then if they do, then off to bigger things. Just hoping our Aunt and Uncle enjoy it enough to keep going. They had a blast creating characters and working on backstory for them.
Once I have a one shot to go, then we plan on picking a day to finally try this. Or who knows, we might just spend our time creating characters upon characters lol.
Thanks... yeah, I have my notes from this conversation for places to go hunting for one-shots. Thanks again, greatly appreciate it.
Besides DMsGuild, you might specifically check out Matt Colville's Delian Tomb, Winghorn Press's stuff, and/or some Adventurer's League modules (https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=45470_0_0_0_0_0_0_0&page=1&sort=3a).
Will do, thanks.
by technically if I put thunderous smite and after chucking a spear at something then activating divine smite
is it 2 actions or 1
I mean I did immediately miss but is it 2 or 1 action
So you can use Divine and Thunderous at the same time? Sorry, Lvl 3 Pally working the kinks out of my character
Oof alright
So i found a tiktok video talking about a thing that was forgotten related to D&D prices and other stuff and since im not in any server with people interested in D&D i decided to join this one just to send the video
I have to wait 30m to send the link tho
Well, I have four, so I should be good.
Lvl 7 pally here 🙂
Barbarian momento
I'm working on a pretty good story (biased opinion) for mine. His best friend "died" in a great war between the half-elves and orcs and at that moment swore he'd never stop fighting. He's a Conquest Pally, who only cares about dominating his opponents both physically and mentally so they never fight again.
I'm thinking of either a redemptive arc or he turns to necromancy and becomes a hell knight.
His friend turns out to be another person I have, who's an Eldritch Knight known as "The Stranger." If the DM kills him off, Adûnakhor turns to "the dark side" and becomes more powerful at the cost of his soul. Otherwise, Stranger reveals himself as the friend and he stays true to his paladin self and becomes more caring for people.
@umbral prism please do not post random links without context. Additionally, this channel is for getting help with the basics
It wasnt random cuz i explained why i came here just to send that video
But i understand that this isnt the right channel
Idk how to explain
This guy found a forgotten dnd thing that had a lot of information on how to price the things right and other stuff i didnt understand and he remade that so its easier to find what youre looking for
Before it was just a very long list but now apparently its a site or something like that
so its about magic item prices?
He said there were 80+ pages so im pretty sure those are in too
Im gonna get the link brb
oh are you talking about that person who dug up a huge fanmade equipment price list from an old defunct fan site
and then put it back online as a spreadsheet in Notion or a similar notes app
He didnt say it like that but i think so yea
I sent the video link in #third-party-tools-archive
Hey there, not sure if I'm in the right channel but I've got a few friends (and myself) looking for a GM to run a session for us and was wondering how we essentially partner up with someone for it :)
#750812887697588356 is your friend here. Check #find-a-game on how to get an advert posted in there
Ayah! I clearly didn't scroll down far enough. I read the rules but got a bit overwhelemed with the chans. Thanks Lionn !! lol
Do paladins have any rules before they get an oath subclass?
Might depend on what you mean by “rules”.
Crime.
Are you asking whether paladins are bound by any moral code prior to taking their oath?
Probably depends on the paladin.
Well, that depends on the oath they plan to take. A paladin of Tyr, the god of law and justice, who has yet to swear an oath probably shouldn't be going around committing crime. This is something between the player and DM to have a conversation about.
Rules-wise, no.
Ye
But yeah, if you plan to have them act in a manner contrary to their future oath, you (and your DM) probably want to plan ahead to explain the change of heart.
Ok.
I have a question regarding divine smite, so it says you add an extra 1d8 for each level spell higher than first, so if I have level two spells, would I be rolling 3d8 ?
Yep!
And once I unlock my 3rd level spells at level 9 I would be rolling 4d8?
Awesome! Thanks!
When you spend a 3rd-level spell slot for it, yes.
Ahhhh okay
If you spend a 1st-level slot (even at character level 9), it’d do the base 2d8 damage still.
So it depends on what level spell slot you want to expend?
Precisely
Interesting, thank you!
I'm planning out the next books I'm going to get in D&D Beyond. Which ones are the best for unlocking player character options for play in D&D Beyond?
I got PHB today. I do want to DM eventually, but I'm a ways of from there still
After the PHB I'd suggest Xanathars and Tasha's - they unlock a lot of player options.
👍
And Monsters of the Multiverse, for player races.
Oooh yeah that's another good one.
ICYMI, you can also buy player options individually instead of the full book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
When I do get into DMing eventually, is there a benefit in having the digital copies on D&D Beyond? Do they unlock anything?
Or can I try and get a used copy somewhere?
I like the digital ones so I don’t have to carry anything. 😅
That's my thought too. But I'm also a sucker for a bargain.
The DnDBeyond versions are always kept up to date and available via internet (or download to the mobile app).
Also the monsters can be used in the Encounter Builder tool (or pulled up in Avrae on Discord!)
Also DnDBeyond being digital is often a little bit cheaper than physical books.
But do what works best for you
If having it all digital is cheaper than getting physical copies, that gives me permission to do what I wanted to anyway ☺️

Hey, hoping this is cool to put here! Are there any new players wanting a dnd tutorial? i have a lot of time to kill haha
Hey y'all!
Absolute new to dnd here!
I never play any campaign before, is there any way I can get into one?
Hello. I've only played a brief campaign of D&D a very long time ago, but it was a lot of fun and I would like a repeat of that experience. If I can find a group that's okay with taking a beginners, I'll be very happy.
Here
yo
i dont know anything about dnd however it seemed interesting, how do i get into it? i was thinking of buying a physical copy of the game but idk how to play
it seems complicated and idk if my friends would like it but im sure they’ll be down to try
you can get the free basic rules and read trough em. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Also check the pinned message here in the channel - lots of useful links to help get you started.
I find it difficult to create a backstory for my character when I don't know the world, factions or their alignments.. But I guess I can always iterate on my character afterwards the more I learn.
Start with high-concept, preferably mundane reasons for your character to adventure. As you learn more about your DMs world you can start to fill in the blanks.
Thanks Daniel 🙂 good idea!
How much is it recommended to run games based on the D&D base lore and Fearun map ? For our second campaign i may want to create something new. How easy is it to transfer the rules/lore to selfmade maps ?
A lot of people prefere homebrew worlds over fixed settings where they can experience their own stories and adventures. It is just a bit more time and effort to create such a world and make it ready for play :)
Some even adapt released adventures and just transplant them into their setting instead
It can be a bit daunting but people creating their own worlds and lore is what spawned most of the settings we have today such as Faerun and Eberron or Exandria from critical role!
Thanks a lot. It feels wayy to much to read up on a whole imaginarys countrys lore for everyone. instead we will just explore our own then 🙂
to just mention this, you absolutely do not need to know the whole lore of Faerun to play in it.
Hi! Me too!
if you wanna read some of it, or as a DM wanna stick to the written lore of it, then you can also totally just read what you need each session in the time before it happens and then go back to it later
I'd like one! (If you still have time)
The thing is i really dont understand the cultural and racial distribution and all that. Im a big fan of realism and if im in a xenophobic human country my players may stick out like a sore thumb.
So far i read that dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, orcs are the most common races and there are many minor races, wich i imagine live in tribes or seclude communities.
I'm interested! I've never played, but have always wanted to give it a try. I've watched a ton of online campaigns.
I've not played as well, but I haven't watched campaigns yet..
Watching games can help to at least see how play proceeds. But as these shows often involve professionals, you shouldn’t expect a similar level of polish in an actual game.
As mentioned above, you don’t have to use the lore as is, but if you want to, there are wikis for the various settings (including the Forgotten Realms, which is the most extensive) you can peruse.
As for xenophobia, you should absolutely clear that sort of thing with players. Not everyone wants to engage with fantasy prejudice.
good idea i will make sure to ask the players what kind of world they would prefer. But i feel like some conflicts and political intrigue would benefit from prejudices 😄 Thanks
Question owo
I am totally new to DnD and gonna try to run a campaign based off a mobile game i used to play alot
is there still a bug with adding homebrew items to character sheets?
Can't seem to find them when i go to add equipment :/
I Am Just Is There Anything about class progression? like A Warrior>Knight>Paladdin kinda scenario
No you usually level in one class or multiclass levels into different classes. But each class can choose a subclass at lvl 3 to make your Fighter either a tactician, a gladiator or samurai or so on. Also you can push character into a direction by roleplaying them
Ah alright
There are some in the PHB, Xanathar's and Tasha's
Okay thanks
There is also the Undead patron in Van Richtens
I think Undying is different from Undead, so that's another one
Hello
Hello guys. How do I comment on the Looking for Players server?
There's instructions there in the pinned messages, or in #find-a-game.
So I’m new, how can I find a proper group?
We have channels here. Check #find-a-game for instructions. In addition to this server, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
For in-person, I'd start with any local games/comics store or library for tabletop programming.

Is there any groups out there willing/able to help me get started with campaigns or even one-shots?
I’ve made a character but cannot, for the life of me, find anyone to actually play with..
The character I’ve got is a first level half elf sorceror, just in case anyone can help me join a group 🥺
Wondering if all us new players are making half elf sorcerers… cause that is me and I have seen it elsewhere too. Is that like the noob character?
I had a question about how exactly time is handled at the table. Say you have a spell which lasts for 15 minutes, would that be real-time, in-game time or a mix of both? Does time keep on going at a steady pace constantly or is it at the DM's discretion?
The race and the class have good synergy so you shouldn't be ashamed to play whatever :)
Hi Im fairly new to the dnd lifestyle but due to nowadays schedules and such I've decided to join the discord server for an opportunity to experience the game virtually rather than physically. I'm really open into starting a new collab so if anyone is looking for members feel free to let me know.

In combat, a round is six seconds, so that's when duration of spells is easy to track. Outside of that, it's very much DM discretion. Game time and real time rarely (if ever) match up in games I've played in or watched.

what does the slowmode enabled thing mean
It prevents a bunch of people sending chat messages at crazy speeds in channel making it difficult for others to participate in the conversation.
Also useful for us moderators to cut off bad behavior before it gets out of hand.
You can only send one messages every X seconds
thanks
Are their any teen friendly campaigns open?
Probably.
hii
Hi
so is this sever active alot
There is a fair amount of users yes.
thats good not many people looking for people rn\
Well we have the #looking-for-players channel which is DM's looking for players.
But whether a game happens right at this moment in time is very dependent on the DM and group you join. Most likely it won't happen right away.

How are each editions of dnd are different?
Each editions changed the rules a bit to try and accomplish certain design conceits. I'm not familiar enough with every edition to go through and say exactly how they are all different but in general that is how they're different.
Sometimes
Again I'm not familiar enough with other editions of D&D - you may get more detailed answers in #dnd-elder-editions.
I see
its best best to think of dnd editions as different games with some common elements, rather than the same game with some differences
Great way of putting it - I mean they all use a d20 as a general game mechanic but they could vary a lot in everything else.
I'm just getting into dnd and I know I have a long way to go lmao
You don't have to dive into legacy D&D unless you want to. I'd suggest just focussing on whatever edition you're playing and enjoy it.
well 5th edition is certainly the easiest to find games for, just by the sheer amount of players
5th edition is also decently easy to get into - the core mechanics are fairly simple but the class and race features add come some complex depth to it (IMO).
can someone explain the encumberance system?
The stock rules are 15 times your strength score I believe. But some DMs don't have encumbrance rules. I use the "piano"rule. Which is if something seems totally ridiculous to be caring with you you can't take it. I believe there's also optional rules for encumbered and heavily encumbered
What are homebrews?
Homebrew is home made rules or adventures not published by wotc or a third party publisher.
is water usually calculated in ounces or pints? how much does 1 person consume each day?
I use a variant on that myself, that I'd anyone wants to transport anything that big they have to be able to explain how they do it. Like...do they go back to town for a team of engineers or something. Hire a bunch of people to transport it, etc.
I believe it’s generally referred to in gallons.
thanks
Makes sense. That would be a good way to run it
For when they decide the evil altar would make a great end table
You can!
Wait. A second subclass of the same class? Like taking Twilight and War Cleric on the same character?
Or just the subclass of a different class you’ve multiclassed in to.
I am pretty sure they mean of a second class^^ As you can't multiclass into the same class again
Okay yeah. I need more coffee.
taking a subclass is always part of taking class levels. there is never an option not to take one if you reach the appropriate class level.
Okay thanks
tryna think of a name for my male changeling, any ideas anyone?

Question if i roll a nat 20 on intimidation does the target get frightened
no
although i could see a DM houseruling it as such, that's not how it works in the base rules
Nat 20's and Nat 1's are only a auto success/failure on attack rolls. However it is a very common house rule to make them a success/failure for all other rolls.
Yeah it does make sense id also make it a house rule if u rolled a persuasion check the target should get the charmed condition
Thats a little busted.
Rolling a nat20 for other rolls should give the best possible outcome, not allow the impossible
Best possible outcome for that character, which in some circumstances could still be execution
Hey guys. I am looking to host a DND campaign online for a couple of close friends.
Thinking of using DND Beyond & Heroforge, together with Discord, to keep a track of things.
Which program can you recommend for the battlefield? Just Roll20.net?
Thank you! I will check them out 🙂
Question, when you get to level 4 can you pick a feat? Is that how those work?
Correct!
A feat or an ability score increase (ASI)
Or to be more precise, if you reach level 4 in one class specificaly
A feat is an "optional" rule but I have never seen DMs not allowing it
I'm thinking of taking sharpshooter for a ranger at level 4, it seems logical
I couldn't figure out how to add it on Roll20
Go into the attack. Go to the flat Modifiers in there. Add it in.
Thank you!

Starting as an Artificer with a custom background (basically Sage), if I take the starting equipment, do I get any starting gold? It feels like the background would still give like 10 but I can’t find anything that tells me for sure
Nope, gold OR starting equipment.
At least by class. Some backgrounds give you a small sum of gold.
Sage is normally 10, but in dndbeyond it isn’t showing that piece now that I customized
would you still get that gold from the background?
I'd say that's up to the DM. There's nothing in the rules specifying you do or do not receive the gold from a similar background when making a custom version.
“Equipment: A bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, a letter from a dead colleague posing a question you have not yet been able to answer, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp”
In theory, I’d start with this when taking equipment
from phb
So with (non-custom backgrounds), you get all the things in the set, gold included. So for sage, it's all that stuff AND the 10 GP pouch.
Ik but i wanna throw a loads of monsters like alleast fight 2 false wyrmes or accedintly stumbly in a cave of gems and then as u notice when u look closer its actually a bunch of a chromatic dragons sleeping and if u wake them up your fighting a bunch of dragons and they'll fight tiamat bahumat just throw the hardest stuff without thinking "did i overdo it"or "this sounds unbalanced and overkill(even though it clearly is)" cus ur players can totally roll to charm or frighten a horde of dragons
could anyone recommend a dnd playthrough i can watch to get used to how the game is played?
Besides the above (which are great), you can just search YouTube and Twitch for D&D streams. Easy enough to find, and some of the less-professional ones (fewer subs and view counts) will probably give you a better idea of the game as game rather than as entertainment for audience consumption.
yea i just started watching dimension 20 neverafter
Is it true that the ranger class is trash?
I like to use bows and stealth so I am hoping not
No class is trash
Thank you Razorwing
But note that shows like Critical Roll and Dimension 20 are highly produced shows — they have DMs and players who professional actors. They're entertainment shows first and foremost and not representative of your typical D&D game session.
Rogues can also fill the bow-and-stealth bit.
But to the above, all classes are viable.
so should I go with rogue instead?
Up to you, really.
Dungeon dudes they are not actors just normal people tuat love dnd
what race is best for sneaky characters?
Any race can be sneaky
I want to play an evil bastard
Any race can be any class, but look into ones with abilities that boost sneaking (either via Dex bonuses or abilities like Pass Without Trace).
chaotic evil lol
Evil is something you'll wanna clear with the table you're at.
Arcane Arcade has many campaigns that are available as full VODs on their channel, it's the same guys working on XP to Level 3 if you know them. Plus, at least in my opinion, their games are a lot closer in feel to what a game with your friends would feel like
I am going for a very jack the ripper-esque character but with a bow
I'd reccomend for that Human or Yuan-Ti as a race
alright
Evil would mean your character would be selfish and intentionally cause harm — remember that D&D is a group collaborative game. Being disruptive at a table will likely get you kicked from it.
@lament nest I fully second this and as said above you really should clear it with your party and DM first lol, having a player that can be actively working against the party is the best way to ruin fun if people are not on board with it
Neutral is a good choice if you want to explore options that are not completely good all the time instead of straight up being evil
yeah seems like the most fair way to go
I'll go with a rogue yuan-ti who's neutral
thanks for your advice guys
That's what this channel is for :)
I've looked at they looking for players and I can't find any beginner campaigns
Does any one know any?
Ok
maybe I should have elaborated on mine because I just put beginner under experience
What Dunl says is true, it's important to be honest about the experience you have, but most players and DMs will be more than happy to help you with rules and character creation and such. Otherwise if the #looking-for-players channel doesn't work for you, you might try the Roll20 campaign board or r/lfg (both don't have a reputation for greatness though, be warned lol)
I hope there's someone out there willing to do beginner campaigns
OK thanks
Plenty of people would love to have you on their party, but as Dunl said people simply omit the "For Beginners" part in their ad but there is no reason not to apply. Just reach out to the person running the ad and ask if they are fine with (completely) new players
And DRG Ghoul if you are a new player, you might find that playing a more classical Good archetype might be easier for your first few campaigns so that you don't have to juggle RP and your learning curve at the same time
What I call "ad" is the DynoBOT post you see in #looking-for-players where people advertize what their campaign is about, how many players they are looking for, etc.
ok
is there any ongoing game where someone new to D&D can sit and watch or listen to a game
You can find games on Twitch and YouTube happening right now, but there's nothing specifically organized in the server here on that score.
If you want to get a feel for the game rules and such, you might want to watch more casual games and steer a bit from the production-heavy series
I have never played a campaign in my entire life :)
I played AD&D in the '90s, got back into 5e at the tail-end of 2020.
I am surprised to hear that
Something I find cool about this community is how wide the age range is in the playerbase
I think we get a good number of folks who are either new to the game, anxious about the social aspect, enjoy the theory-crafting, and/or haven't found a game/group that meshes with their schedule/vibe. Lots of reasons to not necessarily play.
yeah the social aspect is why I prefer text games
Play-by-post is great if you are a bit concerned with your immersion and avoiding a commute to meet strangers
It's also a great way to keep track of events and names since everything is written down
How come? If you are fine with explaining ofc
Also great for those of us with busy, busy schedules. 😅
Hello
Hi SilverThorn
It's one hell of a learning curve I'll tell you what hahaha
Well, I played a couple DND sessions, but I’m still learning more stuff as I go
You’re telling me. Been playing for 27 years and still don’t have it figured out.
I think my favorite part is always finding a new way to incorporate fun themes.
I’m stuck at a standstill right now with my group which sucks, but can’t really do much about it
A narrative burnout?
More like one player that needs to be there to progress the campaign is making excuses to not be there
Did you talk to him about it or are you uncomfortable with doing it?
Yes, we’ve talked to him about it, but he just doesn’t care and I’ve told my DM to continue with The campaign, but he doesn’t want to because he thinks this person will miss everything
Have you asked whether he minds if you continue without him?
(In a way that makes it clear his participation would be preferred?)
I don't like saying it but it might be worth it to value everyone's time and either kick him (if that is an option) or turn his character into a temporary DMPC while he sorts out his problems?
Well, the thing is is I’ve given those ideas to him as well, but he keeps on brushing it off,
You're right, that's a difficult situation
Yeah, so I just join today to learn some things and Join the community
Yeah, we’ve had times where we were able to continue but this is a main part of the campaign
Would appear I exist now, Greetings everyone
Welcome to existence!
Thank you
Currently trying to come back into the worlds of DnD, been a bit since I’ve done anything involving it tbh
If it is completely stopping the campaign for an extended period of time, you might enjoy starting another campaign in parallel to your current one
I literally became a DM to understand it and make my own campaign for that exact reason, but I just wanna be a player and be able to do some chaotic stuff
There are resources here for players looking for campaigns if you prefer to remain a player -> #looking-for-players
I was gonna ask where to go, after looking over the server, that answers my question
Thank you for that
Hi I'm new here is it ok if I talk here to get help
Post has been created, now we wait
Greetings, I’m glad to see another newcomer, ask whatever questions you have one by one, and we’ll see if anyone can help :3
Thanks im actually new to dnd
I’m new in the sense of only a bit of experience XD
It looks fun so i decided to hop on just now
Yep yep
I can't it just looks awesome
I was gonna ask “Hm?” as well to whoever put the question mark
I think he forgot to type "wait" hahaha
I meant to say I can't wait
I'm a fast typer
Honestly, I can’t wait either. I’ve been antsy to get into a new session honestly
I haven’t played DnD in months because of a non DnD related drama, so I’m itching to come back XD
Sameeee

I got a smooth brain
Another player sent me this playlist with a nice visual description of what is going on to go along with the explanations: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJmFJXf3BXjwXkNFo_-iwtHb24AuJcXqx
It covers alot of things from step-by-step character creation to combat rolls, stats, etc.
Oh it didn't embed
It's the playlist from Don't Stop Thinking
Since critical role is mentioned does that mean the session are like a vox machina type setting ✨
What do you mean by that?
I meant are they mid evil settings
Do you mean "medieval"?
Could be literally anything
The limits of DnD are the limits of your imagination
There can be as many different settings as there are DMs out there, from Lord of the Rings to Star Trek and Vampire: The Masquerade
Even highschool drama if you're into that
Noice
That's true, but they are TTRPGs, which means that to someone who has never played DnD, they can be understood as simply being different brands of roleplaying games
hey guys im new
Hi Rio :)
New homie
i maid 2 character wanna know about then?
Hi rio I just came now to
cool dude
It is true that it is not accurate to call everything under the sun "DnD", but it functionally makes no difference to someone who has never played either system
Sure
Tell us Rio
Never mind
So how are you?
Good actually
That’s good to hear. Glad you’re doing good.
Given that KASU was talking about different types of settings, it might be useful to say that these settings having different systems is irrelevant, so saying that some examples of settings can be "Lord of the Rings to Star Trek and Vampire: The Masquerade" is correct, although they have vastly different systems behind the game itself
I've been trying new things lately
I can sense a war coming in the newcomer’s chat, time to go-
I agree with that
I wouldn't go so far as to call it that but I understand, let's stop it at that
I’ve also been trying to learn new things and try new things
so one of them is an aakarora and its a dualing fighter whit a scimitar and the other one is a dragonborn monk
Sounds cool
Grrr how dare you try to defend a hobby you know and love >:(
What got you into dnd
Well, I was always interested in it. I started watching dimension 20 and then I met someone that brought me into it and I enjoyed it.
Have you guys watched critical roles animated series vox machina
Yeah, binged the second season over the weekend
Me, just a nerd
I feel That honestly LMAO
Its was cool seeing the session come to Life
I watched Critical Role but the number of players and their kind of roleplay was a bit too much for me lol
And that’s fair
It isn't for everyone
Agreed
fair and square
😆
Grog best character, I felt him is season 5
Same here honestly love that character
Although I am watching Sunder by Arcane Arcade and one of the players plays his character with the voice of Joe Swanson from Family Guy
Oh really LMAO
Now that I think of it they do sound the same
That’s so true
do you think gerg is a good name for a satyr that is a nerd and also a forger?
Not to get of topic but what other games are you guys into
the binding of isaac
Satyr names are a bit weird so Gerg perfectly fills that role
Like what for example
satyr is the race
That is correct
You guys got everything ✨
Yes and some names tend to correspond to certain races but it is up to the player: you can name your elf something Guenemara Norphyra or just call her Dannie hahaha
Personally I'm a fan of simple and short names
What are your most preferred races
i didnt know but ok i guess
It really depends on what style of character you have in mind but Orcs are kino I think
very cool race
What is the best caster class for a beginner?
But names can also correspond to your character's background: I was watching this French "DnD" campaign and this player named his Human Wizard "Balthazar Octavius Bernard", which he shortened to Bob
Any of the small races i have vertigo 😁 think my tallest character was 4’6”
ok B.O.B. is funny
Do you mean full caster, or class with casting capabilities?
Full caster.
I'd say probably cleric. You can cast, but having the ability to still swing a weapon and wear decent armor (for most subclasses) provides a safe fallback if you run out of spell resources. Plus, you can swap out your spells more freely than some other casters. Good mix of utility spells, healing/buffs, and some decent offensive options as well while learning.
Noice, if/when I do play, I’ll be playing a Cleric, which I was already leaning towards regardless.
Cleric subclasses are hugely versatile as well
Something in there for every play style
For sure yeah
Clerics have always been in my top 3 favorite classes for this reason.
I had a lotttt of fun with a wizard as my first caster though.
For nearly all classes there is an incredible number of possible subclasses
The possibilities are endless. Every spell bends or breaks a rule.
Noice.
Bit of an exaggeration but that's more or less how I think - screw the rules, how can I solve this with magic
am i the only one to think someone already make a druid named crazy dave
I read this funny anecdote a while back about a caster of some kind wanting to teleport to the Moon, and they had to juggle every factor to not die instantly (pressure, temperature, oxygen, etc.)
Crazy Daves have got to be a unique varant of druids hahaha
for real dude
Tell you what though, there is a certain charm about a party with a zealous paladin, a crazy hippie druid, and an edgy rogue
the unwanted party
guaranteed shenanigans
Would there be different rules for a flail if it had more than one spiked balls?
No.
K
The only exception I've seen is Yeenoghu's three-headed flail (he has a Multiattack for three attacks with his flail)
Multiple attack dice would have made more sense.
It would be imbalanced for PCs though.
What’s a regular flails attack dice?
So 3d4 would make sense for one with 3,
But this is boarding on Homebrew so, later.
Seems a tad OP for an one-handed weapon.
Yeah, I’d have to work on it a bit.
1d12 (greataxe) / 2d6 (greatsword / maul) is the most a Two-handed weapon does.
I’ll work shop this and it can be a big/heavy magic flail.
Not particularly a newcomer, just fallen out of experience
What would I be able to do to tame a CR3 beast as consistently as possible, I want to try my best to guarantee a tame here
Not sure if this is the right channel
That's what I thought, I couldn't find any concrete rules on it
Thanks for the help
Questions about playing a fire genasi. If I wanted to set something on fire and throw it at an enemy, how would I do that? Is it an improvised weapon?
If I was the DM, I’d just have you follow the rules for Produce Flame.
An improvised weapon dealing fire damage would also work, but it wouldn’t have as much impact.
Produce flame does 1D8. If I wanted to truly mess up somebody's day with lots and lots of fire, is that a thing I just can't do?
Or is it better to use it more as a distraction than a weapon?
You get produce flame as a fire genasi so you get a ranged fire attack by default
Well, an improvised weapon would do 1d4 damage, which is even less…
Ah. That makes sense.
For context, a commoner (your average human) has 4hp.
So 1d8 damage is ordinarily pretty lethal.
Will it increase as I level up?
Problem is that D&D often puts you up against the extraordinary. 😅
Right
Yeah, it does.
Oh, ok. So this is a level 1 problem
This spell's damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/produce-flame
Pretty standard for a cantrip.
That's good to know. Furthest I've played so far is a level 3 Barbarian
So all the magic is still new
Im pretty new and i saw hexblade warlock as like melee magic and almost instantly was hooked, my problem is i dont wanna feel useless in the later levels cause i know fighters can attack alot, sorcerors can just do alot of damage with spells reliably, what does hexblade do?
warlocks have the always amazing eldritch blast
but does the melee get better too?
It's decent at melee but if you really want to focus on melee fighter and barbarian are better at it IMO.
You may want to checkin at #1045166392174972938 where folks can provide more feedback on your character build
oh okay thanku
Hexblades don't get the pure attack output or spell spam that fighters or sorcerers get, but being able to use Charisma as your weapon attack stat means you can balance being good in melee, having strong ranged spell attacks and good spell save DC, and having good Charisma based abilities like social skills.
Warlocks also get eldritch invocations that provide utility to make up for their lack of spell slots.
Thirsting blade so you get 2 attacks
Alright, ive already taken a few spells and stuff, so basically instead of being good at damage or staying alive, Hexblades are just like a jack of all trades
Hello I am very new and I'm trying this out any advice for newcomers
Have some understanding of the game rules, get a feel for how your character works (game mechanics), be willing to learn, be engaged, play well with others.
Check the pinned message here in the channel for some useful links/resources to help get you started
Ok thanks, will do.
What is the stat order for a barbarian from most important to least?
Elaborate on rule book since I'm horrible at telling the difference between all of them
classically speaking, you're looking to get a high STR for good melee attacks that synergize with your Rage, and a high CON to enhance your HP and give you a higher AC via the Unarmored Defense feature.
Solid 19 strength + 16 AC at level one then. Taking the time to remake a deleted character since the current campaign is being split right at the start due to member count.
Is it better to use premade characters for your first time playing dnd instead of making a character from scratch?
I think so. Making characters is quite a bit of paperwork and it's easier when you know what the numbers do in the game.
Is the recommened class creator on dnd beyond a good scale?
The quick build function? It works perfectly fine, yeah.
ok, thanks!
i am new to D&D like at all
I know some things about it but can someone help me and explain to me? i am a easy learner if you take it slow with me 😅
Si just bought dnd and have never played before and don't even know where to start any advise?
What did you buy, exactly?
