For certain Magic items you need to attune to it to get the full benefits off. You need to spend time to "connect" to it. Most classes can only have 3 attuned magic items at all time. Which means if you have multiple magic items that require attunement, you have to choose which one you like most.
thx
whats a good level 1 boss for a 3-4 playier party?

oh dam
ha, I found that one!
In short, pick a race that seems cool, pick a class that seems cool, read the basic rules pages related to that race and class (spell stuff mainly), read the pages about how to create a character sheet, fight, and what you do during roleplay. Then find a group to play with.
This is just the absolute bare minimum, links above have more and better info

Oh thanks
Curious about something, is there a curse-type ability that deals damage to an attacker every time they perform an attack regardless of whether or not it hits?
Poison deals damage every round for 10 rounds unless you make a constitution saving throw, that's kind of close to what you seem to be asking for. You could take that and homebrew it as a weapon or spell effect, alter the DC and the duration a little
Make it so the saving throw isn't every round but instead whenever they make an attack action
Hallo everybody! Please, I need to clarify one thing: PH at Chapter 9 says "When combat starts, every participant makes a Dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order.". So, do I need to add Dexterity modifier to initiave roll for enemies as well?
yes š
thank you!
https://koboldplus.club/
this puts a hell hound as deadly, which will probably be too hard for them
a hell hound has an ac of 15, a whopping (for level 1) 45hp, +5 to hit and fire breath
how about gargule?
a gargoyle is worse, same ac, more hp, and multi attack
you should go to that site and generate an encounter set to a medium difficulty boss with minions
Who plays as wizard?

I just got the bot hahaha Iāll read it all when I get a bit of time since Iām pressed on that
This is a pretty extensive treatment of traps: https://www.masterthedungeon.com/dnd-traps/
Well first figure out what kind of trap it is, and what's needed to detect it (perception? investigation?), how hard it is to detect (set the DC level to detect it), and if it goes off, what kind of damage it does and if any saving throws are applicable (e.g. if the trap sets off a fireball spell, those in the area must make a saving throw or take the full damage).
I'd add to Noob's excellent list what's needed to disable itāmagic, thieves' tools, etc.
Hello there random people, question for anyone that can answer: How exactly do I start playing dnd? I have like the beginners set for the game and I've watched a few videos here and there but it still all very confusing for me. Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance!
i know how to make them but i dont know the numbers

like for a 3 playier team on lv 3 how much damage?
There are charts in that article I posted that give you an idea.
lets say single target
Also your questions would be great for #dm-discussion
Wait is it actually true that centaurs can climb
Because I was reading the players handbook
Is this actually true
I don't think there's anything in the rules that says they can't climb, so in the absence of specific language preventing them, they can same as any other PC race.
There's a certain suspension of disbelief you need to bring to the table when playing a fantasy game of imagination where magic is rampant.
Hello my three friends and i wish to play a game of dnd but we are super new to the game and don't how to create or play the game

The rules linked above will get you the mechanics of how to play. Someone needs to be the DM while others have characters. The rules include how to create characters and some stuff for running an adventure. You can find plenty of existing adventures online: DMsGuild and Reddit are two go-tos. You can also play Lost Mine of Phandelver for free if you make an account on D&D Beyond.
Are there any implications and status things with aberrations?
The game includes the following monster types, which have no rules of their own.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
Creature type is largely a tool for other rules to reference and interact with.
The spell Detect Evil and Good, for example, says it can detect the location of a nearby aberration.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/detect-evil-and-good
Hmm, ok.
How do i join a group thats looking for players it just keeps saying im not authorized
I think it's 'monstrosities' now rather than aberrations. Aberrations was 3.5. Or am I wrong?
Detect Evil And Good finds aberration, celestial, elemental, fey, fiend, or undead
No, no, my bad, aberrations are still a thing

Hey, Iām a new player and I am confused over initiative and how often it should be used. Any tips?
Initiative is a tool to be used by the DM and players to manage combat.
So it only happens (normally) if combat is triggered.
That said, it can be used by the DM to help manage players actions in an ordered/structured way outside of combat.
But is it determined every round of combat or
nope, just once per combat at the beginning of the fight in 5E
That is a homebrew rule that I have heard done to mitigate metagaming. If you don't know where in the initiative order you'll be every round, then you can't really plan with the other players at the table with what you want to do. I don't think it sounds like a very fun or effective system, so it's certainly not done very often
In the official rules, you roll Initiative when entering combat. If a new player or monster joins a fight in-progress, they roll when they join.
Alright so as far as I've read, player create the whole story and stuff in the game, so what are the rules? Do they just create them as well?
How long does a game usually last?
How long it lasts is up to the dm generally
as for the rules, theres handbooks, but you also don't really need to follow them if you don't want to
Could somebody help me draft a beginner friendly LV2 character? needs to confirm to adventures league forgotten realms rules.
It's not that I don't want to I just don't want to get in my first game and look like an idiot not doing anything right aha
Have you read the basic rules?
depends if youre a player or dm, then read the corresponding handbooks, as well as basic rules
Still reading smth found online
Lots of words I'm pretty sure I'll forget most of it
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L first 7 videos on how to make a character https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD. General rules and how to play
I have a question I have the Sharpshooter feat and Archery fighting style for my elf archer.
The archer fighting gives a +2 to attack but using the Sharpshooter feat it gives a -5 to attack so do they level out or does the -5 disadvantage override?
Yo 7 videos to just make a character damn
I may be wrong, but i would do it as it combines into -3
And I thought I could jump in a game like it was League of Legends
At least with league of legends, you dont need to know the rules and mechanics to use them
with dnd, it can go literally anywhere lol
This is correct. All your various modifiers(proficiency bonus, dex modifier, fighting style, sharpshooter penalty) are added together, none of them cancel each other out.
I've done RP at some point but it's plagued with kids with OP characters, I figured D&D was the next step to stay in a controlled environment
it's a matter of finding the right players, but generally yes, dnd is more controlled
Although I see D&D characters as some kind of WoW roster, Orcs, Mages, Cavaliers... Fantasy stuff, but there are games out there in different universes right?
Not a fan of medieval/fantasy stuff tbh
In dnd, you can create the world if youd like i think
So Avengers D&D? Transformers D&D? The Last of Us D&D?
The game is designed for fantasy settings, adapting it to something like your examples would require a lot of work
You can't apply the rules in every universe? Like if it was just a skin of the game?
Theoretically, you probably could, it would just be a lot of work
The Last Of Us doesn't have Elves, Wizards, etc.
youd have to make the entire thing practically with just the bare outline of the world, then create everything mechanically yourself
@scenic lichen If you're the DM, you can create your own world with whatever you want in it
The rules work regardless of setting
Aight, well I'd better read all the rules first before trying to play with the core mechanics of the game
But if you're going to let people play magic-using classes in a world where magic doesn't usually exist, you'll need to come up with an explanation for it. Same with other aspects of "normal" D&D that don't exist in your custom world. You'll either need to create justifications for them, or disallow them in your game.
Creating a Fantasy character when I know nothing of fantasy and only like things that either go vroom vroom or bang bang will be fun I can tell
it doesnt have to be fantasy, you can create whatever youd like, youd just need to likely heavily tailor the rules
I wouldn't recommend banning any classes, 9/13 have magic so that's a bad idea.
Aight I'll see about character creation when I'm done reading everything
I've met people who run D&D using Avatar or Harry Potter, etc. You can quite literally make any setting you want, though some settings require a good knowledge of the rules so that you know what to change to make them work
Anybody for tips for a 1st time GM
Thanks for the tips everyone
alcohol helps.
Nah, just messing with you
I'll get back to you soon
Be prepared to wildly improvise?
You will make mistakes. That's okay. Just acknowledge it when you make a mistake, take a breath, and move on. Even really experienced GMs get things wrong sometimes
whats the diffrence beetwen a dark elf and an elf?
A dark elf is a kind of elf. They were usually depicted as the evil branch of elves, but 5e is moving away from the āall of X is badā trope. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Drow
Anyone feel ok to help me create a story to run as DM? Iām really new btw, and wanted to try this. I would appreciate it if anyone helped out
I'm new too but people at #dm-discussion will help you more
for any genre you can think of, you can find an RPG built specifically for it
Some people convert D&D to other settings but personally I think it's only good for class based heroic fantasy - like, if you're not interested in a game with fighters, wizards, thieves, and clerics (and variations on those), like if you want to come up with a character's abilities yourself, D&D is not a great fit
D&D is very good at what it was made for, though
like, there are giant mech games, superhero games, post apocalypse survival games, and you can decide which ones you like best
but those games are for #non-dnd-topics
Seconding the recommendation to post in #dm-discussion. Also, if you're new, you might be better served by running an existing adventure. It'll help you get your sea-legs with how to DM.
If you really want to run something you made yourself, go for it. I just think learning how to DM while generating adventure material is giving yourself one plate to juggle more than might be necessary.
how long do campaigns last?
As long as the group wants.
like whats the average?
If you play once a fortnight, most hardcover adventures that go levels 1-13 can be done in a year. What many people play are homebrew campaigns, written almost entirely by the DM. When the story is in the hands of the DM it is up to them and the players how long it takes to finish. Theoretically a campaign could end in one session if everyone dies. So... it's a "how long is a piece of string" situation
1 YEAR! how th
I've never had a campaign end within a year, even running from a module.
Sounds like your players enjoy getting sidetracked. Totally reasonable.
it's just a game why you put in a year straight for a board game?
Eh, if you enjoy hanging out with your friends, it's an excuse to do that as much as anything else.
i just wanted to play a cool roleplaying game i didnt think you would spend a year of your life straight playing it
You can play for a single session. Again, it's what the group decides.
You meet up once a fortnight to play for a 6-hour session. It does take a while to finish an entire campaign but is totally worth it. By the end I usually want it to keep going if anything
One year is nothing. Some of the older players have campaigns that have lasted decades.
I can see where you're coming from, its alright
I'm currently DMing a level 1 to 20 campaign with 12 chapters and the players have only finished the first two chapters (they're currently on a "break" with three personal side quests). It has been one year and at the rate they're going it'll be probably another two years to finish.
wait so homebrew is basically do whatever you want?
To simplify.
The DM is the worldbuilder, author and narrator of a homebrew campaign. The players are the characters that influence the course of events.
wait what do each die do?
The rules lay this out: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
oh okay ty!
Deez probably will elaborate given the length of typing.
The 20 sided one (d20) is for figuring out how successful you are in any given course of action. The others are for when you want to figure out how much damage you do to something, or determine how long an effect lasts.
kk
so if land say a guiding bolt and its d8 and it lands on 4 do i add 4 to the base damage or is that 4 the actual damage?
If the spell (or whatever) is a 1d8 and you roll a 4, that's how much damage the spell does. Assuming no modifiers.
kk
Do I necessarily have to start out with the equipment my class has provided for me? Or am I able to choose whatever
You can either use the starting equipment your class gets, or the gold that you get in place of equipment.
As a note, usually starting equipment is the better choice.
Ah okay
Apart from the starting story, how do you create a home brew dnd
Curious: by "a home brew dnd" are you referring to a dnd adventure, campaign or what?
What is "a dnd" to you?
I would say a campaign, but is more a really long adventure to me
Thereās some good advice here:

Hi
I'm new I just bought the essentials kit
I have a handle of the rules, so if someone wants to do a session dm me at the weekend
Hey I'm new to the whole dnd world and I've seen loads of talk about onednd but I have no idea exactly what it is, please can someone explain it to me?
One D&D is the planned next edition of D&D. They're going to change some rules and try to improve the game, but they say you'll be able to use current books with it so it won't be completely different.
How do I manage 5 greedy players? I'm the dm and we are all new to the game
Have an out of character discussion about appropriate player behavior and expectations and boundaries.
Greedy for what is the other question
If they are greedy for gold you could make that backfire
I'll try
Both gold and loot
The gold pieces turn out to be lead but magically coloredā¦
The party is arrested for forgery.
Aight imma do dat next meeting
But yeah talk about appropriate player behavior - that can save you so much headache.
Thanks mate
They did talk about who gets what, but when their loots get appraised and found out about the price, they usually fight for it or steal their own allies pockets lol
Dunno how it works but I let it happen when they get high rolls
How does combat work tho? Watched some vids and read the rules but still can't understand
Brb
Rules for combat: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
See in particular https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TheOrderofCombat
Also by letting players steal from other players characters you have now "told them" that's acceptable behavior - which is why I encourage you to talk about this stuff beforehand and set the ground rules for what's acceptable and what's not. Some players may not like being stolen from by their own party members. Others feel it's all fun and games. But better to know what everyone feels is okay vs not okay and ensure you have ways of handling issues that may come up.
Never thought of it that way, Thank you
It's important to remember there's no objectively "right" or "wrong" way to play. But whatever ground rules you set about things like stealing from other players, everyone in the group needs to be okay with them.
Well, out of 5, only two of them steal and they usually steal from each other. They sometimes attempt to steal from other party members but I rarely make it happen, like putting the dc higher than usual
Probably better to sit down and have a discussion about it.
Will do
Just gonna echo Noob above: itās important to deal with problem behavior by having a discussion. Folks need to be on the same page, or at least willing to compromise, on how to have fun. If that isnāt possible, it might be better to find a new group. I like this visual breakdown for handling clashing behaviors. https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder_RPG/comments/3aw84m/resolving_basic_behavioral_problems_a_flowchart/
Hello! Iāve been a player for a year or so now and Iāve concocted my own story and world. The only problem is I have no idea how to DM. I know how to roleplay out characters and scenarios as I do a fair bit of writing, but when it comes to combat or rolling for checks, I have no idea as my former DMās never fully explained it and kept their knowledge to themselves. Not sure what we're running next, once we're all together we're gonna sit down and talk about what people are looking to play

I'll warn you, as this is a pickup group it could easily go down in flames but I'm willing to give it a shot :p

These are things you decide on to help you understand how your character would act and why in given situations. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#PersonalCharacteristics
Ok sweet working in a few characters in case one of the groups Iām trying to join accepts me

Hello guys! I am really new to d&d, i am creating my first character right now. Anyways i was just curious if anyone has a group that i could join, where i could learn more about how to actually play d&d then i can learn from a website...
I notice now that this is where I should be technically
If you're new to D&D then yes.
is there any particular channel, where i could find groups for beginners like me?

Thanks : )
Hey guys so i wrote my characters back story, should I fill out the allies/enemies page too or its just optional?
also is there like a preferred language in dnd that would be better for me to choose? or does it even matter which language my character speaks?
Probably chat with your DM on what their setting is like (what are the most populous languages in their world)
can i edit my character settings later tho?
becuse right now i don't have a DM. Should i wait until i have one and let them explain it?
according to their world?
Any character you make outside of a game is, to some extent, practice. You'll likely need to tweak some things once you've joined a group. So yes, your character can (and possibly will) change after you make them.
is Kelemvor a person or object?
Kelemvor is a god.
of necromancer?
My wiki has been invoked.
They told me a Kelemvor knight is a necromancer knight's worst enemy. So I was a bit confused.
Heyja!
I hope this is the right channel for it.
I wanted to ask if you guys have a recommendation for an Oneshot that is really beginner friendly because this would be my first time dming and my (4-5)players are new to dnd too
Also if you have any beginner tips i'd love to hear them too!
I have already watched quite a lot of dnd content (guides too) so I have a vague of things but I feel kind off overwhelmed by the amount of dnd content/guides I can find online. If you don't want to type anything out and remember a YouTube Video, post etc which helped you before then this would be a great help too
Thank you very much
So sorry if the answer to this is super obvious, Iāve just never messed with conjure animals or anything before.
If I summon a beast / elemental / fey / whatever. would their HP be the flat number given or would I have to roll the dices for them? For example the blood hawk, it says 7 (2D6). Is this 7 + 2d6? 7 hp total? 2d6 only?
Same question but with damage. Same blood hawk example, 4 (1d4 + 2) , would it be 4 + (1d4 + 2) ?
Winghorn Press's stuff (A Wild Sheep Chase, A Most Potent Brew, or The Wolves of Welton) is very good. Several folks have used them with newbs successfully.
Seven is the average. If you want to calculate HP, you'd roll 2d6.
you can do either, but the flat number is intended as an average, and speeds things up
I have beginner player tips and beginner DM tips. Which would be helpful?
I assume that average exists to make it easier for anyone who summons like 32 of something and doesnāt want to roll for each one?
In general, it's to speed up running combat, regardless of the situation.
^
Sweet thanks
Both actually because I have never dmd and my players have never played dnd.
But DM Tips are probably more important right now
DM TIPS
- Conduct a session zero so everyone's on the same page. Guides online for what they are and how to run one are easy enough to find via Reddit, YouTube, and Google.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions.
- Don't try to avoid failure. That's impossible. Instead learn from it.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations (see: session zero) so that all have a good time.
- Donāt try to absorb all the info at once so youāre ready. Thatās like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.
tbh all I'd say to a begginner DM is to relax, stuff will break and will have to be looked up midgame, no big deal, and have fun
PLAYER TIPS
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else (in combat or not).
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else's.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
How do I post in the chat channel LFG? Says I don't have permissions.
Although listen to razorwing, those tips will come in handy often
Follow the pinned comment's instructions in the channel.
You have to link your Discord to Dyno and fill out the form.
one thing I learned over time that helped me unclog combats is to hurry the players to do stuff on their turns, they'll usually do what their main plan was but will skip the "errrrrrrrrrrrr..." moment.
"- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions."
What is exactly meant by this?
"- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way."
Also this one is really cute! Love it !
Thank you two for your tips!
Do you have a recommended oneshot also by any chance?
Don't punish the characters for the players' bad behavior. The DM should talk to players directly offline.
hello
Problematic characters come from problematic players, players are people, so that should be taken care of as reasonable humans, not as tabletop game characters.
Ah alright! Think I understood
Thanks !
Otherwise it will create a dynamic called the "DnD horror story" which is everyone's fear
A Most Potent Brew, A Wild Sheep Chase, and The Wolves of Welton on Winghorn Press's website are great one-shots for new players, and they only need the free Basic Rules to run. https://winghornpress.com/adventures/
I read/heard about a lot of these! :D Hope I don't see any of my games as one in the future!
You are the one who decides who gets to enjoy all your time and effort put into the game after all, I'm sure you'll have no issues
What does the level mean? "A Wild Sheep Chase [levels 4-5]" for example? Are they starting with level 4?
It's designed to be played with characters at either level 4 or 5.
Are there oneshots that start with level one or would that be stupid? Because I fear that lvl3+ is a lot of input for a new player
There are. A Most Potent Brew (see their drop-down under the Adventures tab) is level 1. I know there are others.
Level 1 sessions are very tricky to DM, one critical roll could completely destroy a PC
(I am speaking from experience)

I think level 3 is completely fine for a new player to take on, but if you feel like it's too much anyways you could try level 2
It's not like they are going to know how to play their characters either way
I'll probably try level 3 then. That is the time where you choose subclasses right?
yeah, after starting several groups at level 1 and 3, 3 feels better overall, and ensures some players aren't missing out on cornerstone features right away
On most classes, yes
Alright! Do you level up in oneshots or do you stay at your level?
Also about leveling up. I read that people like to use "Milestones" instead of the xp-system and I'd like to ask what you guys prefer
Usually you're going to stay at that level unless you plan to play more
I prefer milestone, but both have merits
Most one-shots keep you at a given level, but you can do what you like! I prefer milestone; I have enough bookkeeping to do as a DM.
Milestones, it feels better, it's simpler, it's fitting
And you can certainly level up in oneshots, specially if you rule it as Milestones, it's up to the DM
XP system works better if you are treating DnD as a classic RPG, which is a real old school type of game
Thank you for your answers!
I'm extremely new to DnD, i really wanted to try it out. hopefully someone can teach me like step by step if they dont mind.
That's a pretty big ask. More likely you'll get directed to the resources in the pinned comment.
Have you read the basic rules?
English also is not my first language, it would be really difficult for me
i read the the discord rules already, i just had a guy explained a little bit of the concept and stuff for me like 10 mins ago
ohhh you mean game rules in dndbeyond? i just discover this discord from there if thats what you mean?

okay i will try to read it first, i might ask a lot of question about it though xD
That's one of the reasons the channel exists.
do i keep track of my ability scores or would the game master do that?
preferably you
As a player, you're responsible for your characterāability scores, what abilities you have, how they work. The DM is responsible for a lot of other things, so it's considerate to do your share in making the game work!
i saw the damage compute
The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you canāt use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
what is DC and what is 2d6 something like that?
DC means difficulty class 2d6 means two six sided dice
More info on DCs here:

And here for dice notation:

so AC 5 mean my armor are class 5 but it only have 1 hp?
yes
You can read about coinage here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Coinage
And armor class here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
If you're a player character with 5 AC and 1 HP, though... something's gone wrong. š
yea 1 hp it sound basically useless
stubs toe
dies
how'd you come to that calculation for your character?
seems like it yeah
idk its at the race introduce
ah
is it for a Gnome's tinkering stuff?
yes, im trying to remember which race can do what first
it has to be rock gnome
so far i know is a drawf elf fireman and gnome have dark vision
You have proficiency with artisanās tools (tinkerās tools). Using those tools, you can spend 1 hour and 10 gp worth of materials to construct a Tiny clockwork device (AC 5, 1 hp).
so the device will have 1 hp and and an AC of 5. (which means its very fragile)
word of advice, do not try and memorize anything yet. take your time and read them thouroughly. but no memorization yet. after you've read the important stuff, then you should memorize the basics such as what AC is, what a DC is, what ability scores do, the order of combat, etc.
What are some ways to help keep concentration afloat? I believe there was a feat?
War Caster gives you advantage on the check.
Im making my first DnD oneshot with zero prior DnD knowledge
Or Resilient can let you add your proficiency bonus to it.
and definitely don't memorize all the races. read them and pick one at character creation then memorize the one you did pick and write down their details. character sheets are made to let you keep your character's info in one place for easy access.
I believe there's also an artificer infusion that lets you auto succeed on a number of concentration checks in a day
āš» Mind Sharpener
Warcaster, resilient and artificer infusion. Righto
I recommend possibly a premade? still getting used to everything while youre making the world seems like possibly a bit much
Plus you can go bladesinger to add your intelligence mod to those checks
This article might come in handy:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/950-build-your-first-homebrew-adventure-in-10-easy
Resilient (Constitution) if you don't have CON save proficiency.
Warcaster or the eldritch invocation Eldritch Mind for advantage on the check.
then there's artificer and there's specific subclasses like Stars Druid's Dragon Starry Form activated ability
Get all three of those and it would be nearly impossible to lose concentration
This is going to sound stupid but is the artificer infusion artificer specific?
Or is that something I can get with any
@smoky adder i have a basic idea for my one shot but i dont understand anything about levels, powerlevels, or stats
You have to be an artificer to make them, but if you have an artificer in your party/find one somewhere, anyone can use the created items
Iād recommend talking to the folks in #dm-discussion, then. They should be able to help balance things.
I always tell people āyou donāt need to have all the answers; you just need to know where to find them.ā
Ok thanks

Could use some veteran or someone more knowledgeable than I. Two weapon fighting, I have read the description it donāt fully understand how to apply it. I have a Assassin3/Gloomstalker7 I can already make two attacks but does this mean I can make a third attack using a bonus action? Is that how CR Vax did dagger, dagger, dagger?
yes, you would get 2 attacks as your main action because of gloomstalker's Dread Ambusher feat, and assuming you are wielding a light weapon in your offhand, you can make an attack as a bonus action, without the ability modifier on that attack, unless you have the two-weapon fighting style from ranger
Hi!! I'm so new and afraid š»
Check the pinned message here in the channel - lots of useful links to help get you started
I'm gonna do the character submission and go from there š my party jokes that I'm a Menzoberranzan historican so I hope I will fit in here !
But yes will defo read ty sm!
So wait, Iām dumb. Cause of dread ambusher, my initial attack could potentially (if surprised) have 3 weapon attacks, sneak attack, favored foe? For a total of 6 damage dice? Which would be 12 or doubled cause of assassinate?
Or I could lose 1d6 (two weapon fighting) and use Zephyr strike instead for a 1d8
you couldn't do favored foe and zephyr strike, as both are concentration, but yes, all dice would double
I love playing with new players it reminds me of my first time playing but instead of dying to stradh they die to goblins lol
On your first turn against a surprised opponent, you take the Attack action. You normally get two attacks, plus the Dread Ambusher attack, and potentially a fourth attack if you're using two-weapon fighting. Let's say you're using Shortswords, and all four attacks hit. With Assassinate, they'd be crits. So three attacks would be 2d6+Dex, one would be 2d6, one would get 2d8 from Dread Ambusher, and Sneak Attack would be 4d6. So that's a total of 12d6 + 2d8 + 3xDex IF all of them hit. If you activate Favored Foe, you would add another 8d6, again IF they all hit.

very dumb question but is there a set number of spells I can have from each level
because looking at the PHB I thought I could have 2 1st level etc
but I realised that was spell slots
yes, it's per class, and sometimes subclasses grant additional spells
so does that mean I should have the same number spells as spell slots per level
or can I have 1 level 1 and 3 level 2 for example
the number of spells you learn/have prepared is dependant on your class and sometimes on your spellcasting ability modifier.
and that number of spells, whether learned or prepared, can be of any level for which you currently have spell slots
yeah, I misread what you were asking
spellcasting is a little funky, and its hard to grasp known vs prepared on some classes
so if you are a 5th level cleric for example, refer to Cleric's spellcasting rules for the number of spells you can prepare each day. and those spells can be any combination of 1st,2nd and 3rd level spells. because you have spell slots of up to 3rd level
ohhh nice
damn that would be so much better
our party are all new and we have a new dm so its been a funky start
do keep in mind that Learned casters like Wizard or Sorcerer are somewhat different. but their spellcasting feature covers everything you need to know for each. just gotta read it carefully
Exuse me but I made a mistake on my looking for dm form I ment to put new instead of couple years for experiance what do i do?
Thereās a thread attached to your post where you can put any corrections or updates.
oh thank god thank you so much
Iām new, so Iām full of questions. Are there any good DND websites or apps other than roll 20?

Noted, thank you
like what stuff?
Mainly finding people to play with cause nobody around me plays it so i kinda forgot how to play

This article has some good advice:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
why cant i find tiefling subraces in the player handbook?
It's not a subrace, it's a base race
And it's here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/races#Tiefling
There aren't any tiefling subraces, there are variants in other books, but the PHB doesn't have any variants
like with the different bloodlines?
There aren't any in the player's handbook, only in Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide
Use what?
the different bloodlines
That'd be a question for your DM
okay thanks!
Most of the tiefling subraces are in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes
Hey everyone, new here and new to DnD. I just thought I would join in with the fun.
Hey guys! I work at an elementary school and had a student ask me to sponsor an after school dungeons and dragons club. I was immediately on board and the school already approved us. The only issue is that I've never played dnd before. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can make sure this club turns out great?
Have you or the kids played D&D before?
He said that he never played and I guess as a teacher you want to know how the game works other wise the students will just change the rules how they like (yeah Ik changing rules is not bad in DnD but they will only do it in there favour Ig)

You can start with a pre written campaign if you want to. Its probably the easyst for the start https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop this one is a free one that is really great for players that just start out. If your not English and you want to idk play on another language you can sign up for there news letter and get the campaign and the basic rules for free on another language. Also look at the box above that message
How many kids do you expect to join?
I haven't announced it yet, but I'm aiming around 5-10
You might break it up into two smaller groups. Parties of four or five are pretty manageable; more than that tends to get unwieldy.
Is an ability check: D20+The one modifier. or D20+Proficiency bonus+Modifier.
If proficient, add the proficiency modifier.
If you're not proficient in perception, it's just d20+WIS modifier. If you are, d20+proficiency+WIS modifier.
Ability check is just the one modifier, a skill check would include proficiency if proficient. there is a difference between the two mechanically
True. If I ask for a Dexterity check (as distinct from a saving throw or a specific existing skill), it'd just be d20+DEX mod.
Thanks ! And a dmg roll is whatever is written on my weapon+Str modifier ?
Or do I add my prof bonus to that ?
Proficiency isn't added to damage.
You may add STR or DEX, depending on the weapon. Melee is STR, ranged is DEX, finesse you can choose.
Bingo.
Thank you so much
except for finesse weapons that can use dex mod instead
Are spell slots the same for every class ?
Does a lvl 3 Wizard have the same spell slots as a Lvl 3 Druid ?
no, they are not the same for every class, but there is overlaps
How do i calculate them for druid ? I'm very much a beginner an I have to dm In 1 hour and i'm panicking
Theyāre shown on the table at the start of the class description. No calculating needed.

So I've played exactly One game od DnD and loved it, unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts with my friends our party kind of fell apart. But I want to get back in, question though, does the character by default start at level 1 for every campaign?
No. People often start new players at lvl 1. Some experienced players will, too, but people often start at 2 or 3
I'm about to start a new campaign, one of the players asked if we could start at lvl 2 because he wanted to multiclass and make it easier for himself, so the DM said ok.
It's good to start brand new players at lvl 1 because lvls 1-2 function as tutorial levels
I mean I think I understand the rules for playing, now I just need to find a campagin to join.

Heyja!
What type of character sheet are you using and why?
The 5th edition character sheets linked on this page: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
The DM who taught me how to play used them, and they're the standard, so I have no reason to use any other.
Do you print them out or do you use them digitally?
Digital.
I print them
You can do either. I have mostly digital because its easier to keep neat and clean for me.
Folks at my player table like paper because its easier to work with for them.
Folks i dm for use all digital cuz we play online
Hi
All my party is using their laptops for characters
Iām gonna be a good little DM and print out everyoneās sheets
I like paper wayyyy more
I want to try D&D
Good choice. Iām new too. Only 2 sessions deep

Hey
Helloooo
Should I change my pfp? I donāt think itās explicit but idk. I donāt want to break a rule XD
Ask the moderators in #moderator-support, or just change it
Ohhhh ok thanks dear!
I played DND once before, but my party was inconsistent and unfortunately the campaign died
Iām hoping that I can find some people on here that would kind of steer me in the right direction of finding a party and such. I would like to play DND and actually finish a campaign
I need advice on Druid subclass, I'm picking between Moon, Star and Shepard and I cant decide
this campaign will be over a year so it needs to scale at least decently
Sounds like a conversation for the #1045165827068002374 channel

thank you for your help, means a lot when i know so little lol
How is everyone doing
Hello!
How did yāall get into d and d
saw this guy on youtube and ive been bored with the limited capabilities of games
I can relate to that
A Red Box gifted to me on a birthday way back in the ages past...
Didn't really do much RPG stuff until high school though.
I got into it cause I just like making fictional worlds, and dnd lets me actually play around with other people
I got into it cause it seemed fun and I wanted to learn cause I already had dice so I said why not! I just bought the essentials kit !
Wow I guess everyone has cool reasons ! Thatās awesome
Bro I need this stupid player handbook, why is it 38 BUCKS MAN
D and d is pricey that I understand! So I can relate
The Basic Rules are free. It has most of the stuff in the PHB.
ive been meaning to ask, what big stuff is it missing
The Basic Rules only contain one sub-class per class and one feat.
ah
can anybody knowledgeable review a character for me and explain how to play a druid?
first off, you want to make sure you check your armor and scimitar in dnd beyond
an AC of 10 is not great, equipping your armor in dnd beyond will increase it
How do i start playing dnd im brand new
at level 1, you will mostly be doing melee attacks, or frostbite most likely. Can use ice knife against tougher enemies, but you'll only have 2 uses of it until you rest
Any manuals and stuff i need to read

Thx
makes sense and would ice knife do more damage if iām closer to it?
no, typically spells do not function like that
spell slots?
like if i used detect magic out of battle would it matter or can i do that as mush as i want as long as itās reasonable?
they work the same all the time, you have a set number, spells use them as you cast spells, most classes recover used spell slots after a long rest
some spells are different as they can be ritual cast, which takes longer, but do not take a spell slot to cast
and cantrips can be cast whenever im pretty sure
you could cast detect magic as many times as you want that method, as both it and purify food and drink are ritual spells, but if you want to do it fast, you would use a spell slot to do so
so i can cast ritual spells as many times as i want?
and cantrips are spells you have practiced so much that you can always call on them
provided you cast it as a ritual, yes
ohhh thatās cool asl
The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal. It also doesn't expend a spell slot, which means the ritual version of a spell can't be cast at a higher level.
how do ik if itās a cantrip tho??
theres a specific list of cantrips
ok
and on your character sheet, it seperates cantrips
so is it a good character itās only my second one
the two you have are frostbite and mending
it's a fine character, you have balance between utility, healing and damage
alright thanks so much
would you mind taking a look at my other one itās a rogue?
Sure
Do you think a holy flail would be a good weapon for a cleric?
seems fine, you've allocated stats decently, and have decent proficiencies
can't see the background or anything though
can i make it so you can?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/92766369 did i do a good job?
Where'd you get the Mace of Disruption?
Is it possible make an insanely overpowered warforged coffeelock character?
They don't get exhausted or need to sleep
Does anyone have the full list of what conjure animals can summon?
I think its somewhat possible using only the verbiage in the books, but if your DM somehow causes the skies to split apart and smite your character, I'm not responsible for that.
Hahahaha
So I'm workshopping some kind of War forged and I've kind of gotten set on doing a Blood Hunter as it really fits with a motive and background and story I've thought of, but I can't figure out how a warforged would have blood or be able to use blood hunter skills
Howdy howdy
Dndbeyond filter by beast cr 1/8 to 2
Does anyone know why i cannot choose a forest gnome on DnD Beyond ? How are the races limited and when do i know which one i can actually use ? Is it up to the DM ?
it should be under the gnome selection
it will expand to give you all the options provided that you (Or a freind that is content sharing) has bought it
Hello
If you have no books purchased, and no one is sharing content with you, Rock gnome is the only free option (and legacy deep gnome)
I really want to learn how to play DND but there's so much rules
but i went over the rules and i understand at least the basics š
It's certainly a lot to try and take in at first but remember- You don't need to know all the rules.
Pre game it might be worth looking over character creation and making a test PC but most of these things click into place much better when actually sitting down and playing.
All i understood is u make a charecter and u role play it and roll dice and dice decides how good u are boom u have fun
Also remember the rules don't just cover your PC, but how other PCs, spells, monsters can work and you don't need to focus on that, just your own PC for now
well I'm not really worried about the rules.... I'm just a little nervous to actually play with people who knows this better than me
I actually write so I know thing or two about roleplaying and I love fantasy games
although I've never been in a game before
we're on the same boat
I thought i was the only one lol
When do I take reactions?
When they trigger and you have only one that refreshes at the start of your next turn.
For example an Opportunity Attack is a reaction. It triggers when an enemy moves out of your reach and then you can use your reaction to attack them.
Counterspell is a reaction. it triggers when you can see someone cast a spell within range, and you can use your reaction to try and counter it.
Thx
What stats should a rouge have?
this might sound like a dumb question but if a character dies in a campaign can you reuse that character for another?
dexterity i think
Sure. As long as the DM approves the options used to make that character.
The story they had in the previous campaign may not fit and would likely have to be discarded if it doesnāt.
Do they need any inteligance or wisdom?
Depends on the subclass you go with, but wisdom makes perception better and that one is a real useful skill.
What are the subclasses?
Thereās a bunch. What books do you own or have access to?
Then the only one available to you would be whatās found in the basic rules - the thief.
Does he needs wisdom?
Depends on what you want to do. Thereās no ābestā way to build a character as it is going to depend on your DM, the party, and what the adventure is going to focus on.
But generally you want DEX to be the highest, followed by CON. Those will make them effective at what theyāre meant to be good at. After that itās up to yāall to decide what other things theyāll be good/bad at.
Not for rogues generally.
Youāll wanna read up on how various weapons work and how sneak attack works with rogues.
Please tell me at least one person can let me join their campaign I havenāt been invited once because of my age
Short sword can be used for dex aswell. :)
Iām sure one person can, but the people looking for games and players are found in #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players .
Then youāll just have to keep trying. As well as checking out other places where games are posted like roll20 or /r/LFG.
Are they other discord servers ?
Iām sure thereās lots out there! You could even find them in #looking-for-community
Tried that to
Iāve spent over 120 hours listening to dnd podcasts
I know things š¦
Yeah. The two most difficult things about D&D are 1.) finding a group and 2.) getting consistent games scheduled. It takes work to find a group sometimes, and sometimes it requires you to take the initiative, be the DM, and form a group yourself.
That method takes the sometimes weeks to get a group together and condenses it down to hours.
This makes sense finding a game seems almost impossible right now haha
Yeah it takes a lot of time, but once youāve got a solid group? š¤
Gaming stores sometimes have groups looking forplayers. When my group was looking for 2 more players we got lucky and happen to sit by 2 other people looking for a game. They overheard us and asked to join.
When looking up Spells in the component category it sometimes says random letters such as: S, M (a bit of fleece). What does that mean ?
Nvm i found out. It stands for prerequisites that have to be fullfilled to cast. Verbal, Somatic (Physical) and Material
I wish I could do that but I live no where near a shop like that I live in a small town
Is there nowhere that does nerdy stuff near you?
My issue is working nights lmao
Nope closest is like 4 hours awayā¦
But I understand people they wanna play with people with experience someone thatās around the same age as them and a 14 year old isnāt that
I just really love dnd
Do you know anyone in your area that would be interested in playing?
School, local library, bookshops, get a starter set and get your friends to play
There used to be but they moved away
And they were never really into it like I was
Iāve got the essentials kit and starter kit
You in school? Find a teacher who likes the game, have them sponsor you, and form a club.
If you canāt find a community, make one.
Kidnap them and make them play
And btw does someone think they could rate my character since itās like my first character made ?
#1045165827068002374 is the best place to ask
Daniel d wiki like from the one piece dnd by rustage2?
Youāll need to talk to your DM on if they allow Variant Human or not. If you do take it, then I donāt recommend the Grappler feat. Itās the only one thatās free with the basic rules, tho.
Also yeah #1045165827068002374 is the place to go for deep dives in to your concepts.
Ah thanks
Nope.
I just realised you were a modā¦
hey question how would you set someone's spells up?
what do you mean?
Highly depends on the class
like i have a warlock how would i get their spells set up on dnd beyond?
Sorry, I don't use D&D Beyond
There's a page on the character sheet for spells
Like where the equipement and stuff is, there's a tab for spells, click it and a window will open with your available spells, click "learn" to choose that spell
also i thought warlocks got a magic item too
No, no starting character gets a magic item
ok thanks
The genie warlock gets their magic lamp or whatever, but it's not exactly a "magic item," kinda but more of a specific class feature
If your DM wants to start you with a magic item that's their choice (i.e. house rules), but it's not the basic rules of the game, so not a feature in dndb
i am the dm
Well, then if you want to give your players a magic item to start, then you can choose to do that, just as you can choose to make up any new rule you want.
It's not an option in the basic game rules, however, so not a feature in dndb
wait i can make any rule
Yeah, D&D is completely malleable. You're totally free to change the rules.
that is awsome
Just don't expect dndb to adapt to your rules changes
ok
I would give you a word of advice regarding changing the rules: make sure that any changes you decide to make increase the fun of the game.
also a level 1 warlock gets only 4 spells right?
I'd recommend playing the game by the rules a few times so that you understand how the rules work before making changes
It's in the book
ok thanks
A lvl 1 warlock gets 2 cantrips and knows 2 lvl 1 spells
thx
And if you're using dndb to make the character, it'll limit you to how many you can get. i.e. once you've chosen as many as you can, it won't let you choose more unless you unchoose something
What?
the girls who don't dnd
No idea
No idea
dang
Maybe you should join it and find out
You can always just leave it if you don't like it
i've been looking for it but i can't find it
Are you sure it exists?
they say it does in their podcast
It might be one of those things where you have to be a patron of their Patreon in order to join it
oh dang
ok thanks
i require assistance with creating a character
#1045165827068002374 is the place for you! Tho youāll be better served if you ask more specific questions about what you need help with.
Hey guys whatās good
Trying out my first multi-class character, I am wondering something about cantrips
I'm a Cleric 5 / Warlock 1, so character 6, if I cast Eldritch Blast, will it be cast as a lvl 1 (due to warlock 1) or as a cantrip with bonus from 5th level (because character is level 6) ?
they scale with character level, not class level
ok thanks !
Celestials, metallic dragons, and unicorns.
And of course Blink Doggos
Haha lol
What does home brew mean? Is that like a different type of rules system for playing? Or does it mean customized combat or something.
it mostly referes to rules, monsters, player options etc created "at home" so to speak, instead of being officially made by Wizards of the coast or by a third party company
like if you make your own beer at home
What does VTT mean ?
virtual table top
its a website or software that helps you run your game online (or at home with a monitor)
you usually get virtual dice, a map with a grid and tokens for characters and monsters to move around, at a minimum
What would be the alignment for a scientist that hurt people with his invention but didn't realise how destructive it was ?
What are the rules on the invisibility ? (Not the spell)
chaotic good I guess
what are the intentions for his inventions
hurting someone by accident really doesnt have anything to do with alignment
unless you are deliberately reckless
way of the astral self monk, can literally just be a stand user
True
The end goal is to help his village by making drinkable water, however he had to build weapons to gather funds.
Can you cast a spell that doesn't require concentration if you're already concentring on one ?
yes
that's really cool
a friend of mine did a one-shot using Radiant Citadel as a theme and sent the party to JoJo's. It was done for Extra Life so the person who gave the largest donation got to pick what world they went to :p
Oh cool
attack rolls against the creature have disadvantage and the invisible creatures attacks have advantage
Which class would you recommend for a bowuser? (Lvl 3)
Fighters, Rangers, Bards and Rogue would all work with a bow as the main weapon
Fighter or Ranger gives you a fighting style (Archery) but usually all DEX builds can dip into archery
Alright!
Thank you!
What does it mean to have "proficiency"
Your character is very good at that particular thing and can add their proficiency bonus to any checks involving it
Why are there to damage things where I deal damage close to a battle-axe?
Like there is 1d8+3šŖ
And olso smaller in gray 1d10+3
Single handed and double handed
Oh ok
Thatās specifically because the weapon has the Versatile property.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
Thx
So can a rogue (finally I spell the damm classes name properly) anything that isn't a short sword or a dagger
Iām assuming the missing word is wield? You need a weapon that is finesse and range based for your sneak attack
Rogues are proficient in all simple weapons, shortswords, hand crossbows , longswords and rapiers.
Sneak attack works with all ranged and finesse weapons
Theoretically, any character can wield any weapon, though they sometimes wonāt get great results with them
Hello, I am pretty new to DnD so I have no idea but I want to draw them š
I am making few designs and may I ask, is Necromancer Aasimar possible? Just wanted to draw some funky skulls with wings
There is no restriction on race+class combinations
(With the exception of the battlerager barbarian)
Youād need to clear the concept with your DM if you plan to play it, tho. Restricting races with flight is a common thing amongst many DMs.
Thank you!
I am planning to draw them only XD
Do you restore health on long/short rests?
You can spend hit dice to recover health during a short rest.
You regain all your health (and half your spent hit dice) during a long rest.
After a short rest you can use your hit dices to restore health.
The amount of hit dices you can use is equals to your level, and the type of dice (d6, d8 or whatever) is defined by your class
So a level 4 fighter has 4 hit dice, each one being a d10
After a short rest you can use one or more hit dices to restore your health (you also add your constitution mod to each dice)
Long rests heal you completely, and you regain half of your hit dice.

or PHB page 186
Thx
How do I know the dice for characters?
Like the barbarian is 10 but what about the rest?
It says at the start of their class description features.
Do you mean hit dice? The barbarianās HP increases with a d12, and all other classes are specified in their descriptions.
Yooo
So i read that I can use a evocation as a wizard at any time without using any spell slots so does that mean that I can use spells like ray of frost at any time? (It feels dumb to ask this but if it turns out i cant Iāll embarrass myself-)
May I ask where you read this?
Dnd beyond
you mean Cantrips?
Yeah, I don't see where it says you get an Evocation without spell slots
Yea-
yes, any cantrips you have learned you can use infinitely, they do take time to cast (most of them are 1 Action) but you can do it as many times as you want, no spell slots needed.
and also, this is true for ANY cantrip you learn. not just evocation ones or any specific school
Thanks š
evocation wizards are fun. they have fun features
Ikr
sculpt spells
Ok so how do I play dnd?
throwing a fireball right in the middle of combat between your team mates and enemies
you get some people together, one becomes a DM who creates the story and you get some players who will make a character and will be characters in DMs story
of course reading the SSR and basic rules is important as well

What about the dice and stuff?
part of the rules
read the basic rules sent above us and ask any questions
you roll dice to determine how well you fare on the thing demanding a dice roll
or if you gonna hit an enemy and how much damage you do
Can you cast spells if you have something in both of your hands?
As a arcane trickster rogue for example with 2 weapons
depends on the spell components (verbal, somatic, etc)
if it's strictly verbal casting I'd allow it
war caster also lets you cast with hands full\
How many Hit Dice can I roll with a short rest and long rest ?
And how do we recover Hit Dices ?
you can roll as many hit dice as you have left during a short rest. during long rests, you dont spend hit dice, you recover half of your total
In my Arcane Trickster spell table the Mage hand is marked as +3. Whats the difference between Mage Hand +2 and Mage Hand +3 ?
hi
that's under cantrips known
so it means that you know mage hand + 2 other cantrips
or mage hand +3 other cantrips
I tried to play dnd with my friends but they were outrageous
and all of us didnāt know how to play which is not good
lovely, that makes a lot of sense
outrageous how? That can be good or bad :p
outrageous in a sense of very chaotic and confusion
I still wanna play dnd but I would probably have to play with other people
nod that's not good, yeah
Do Cantrips added by my race count into my "cantrips known" ?
nope, 'cantrips known' are specifically what you get from the class
that's fine š I hope you find a game. I'd offer but I'm running 4 already and they're full. One might not be but one of the players wants to ask some friends first
I just got done with my third session and honestly its mostly about the energy people put into research. I planned out my Character using google drive and put a ton of screenshot in there with all spells skills and so on. A lot of reading and the trying it out.
yeah
I donāt have problems with the reading hell, Iād read thousands of pages to learn
itās just the finding of people
Throw oranges at strangers with your contact info on them
Can someone explain Martial Advantage to me from Hobgoblin statblock? It says once per turn the hobgoblin can deal an extra SEVEN (2d6) damage to a creature it hits with a weapon attack if that creature is within 5 feet of an ally of the hobgoblin that's not incap. Does that mean 2d6 x 7 times? Or 2d6 result + 7 total?
2d6 x 7 every turn he has an ally nearby standing is kind of nuts
great idea
Seven is the average of 2d6
5e writes damage like that
Itās kinda dumb
They do an extra 2d6
The average damage is listed so you can use it if you don't want to roll for damage.
thank you very much
Hey there, just wondering if I should buy the source books on roll20 or DND beyond? My current games are all on roll20 but I am looking at playing some games IRL as well
D&D Beyond has an app, and it's great for use in person. Roll20 is great if you use a lot of it.
If you buy it on D&D Beyond you can use it anywhere ā via website or app. However, with Roll20 you can only use it with Roll20.
You can check out the free Basic Rules if you want an example of what theyāre like on D&D Beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I want to as well, but donāt have anybody
Anyone want to play dnd? Iām currently solo and pretty new to the game, so I donāt have anyone to play with. I do know the rules, though.
?looking
...
that usually works
well #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players works i guess
very useful to build a character quickly
D&D Beyond was even made with the original idea of in-person play. Online has boomed since then.
Hi everyone! I'll be going to my third DnD game night next weekend. The DM is very helpful and understanding, but I'd like to come prepared with my spellbook. Can someone help me determine what my spells are and what to do? I'm a level 2 cleric.
Even just a resource so that I can look everything up myself. Thank you š
I'm not sure I fully understand your question, but we're not actually doing a full fledged campaign right now. We're essentially doing mini quests every week with a rotating group
ohhh ok
Ok. A bit of a new player and I want to ask something some people may be still afraid of. How do I know if the group I play with will be a very good one? And if they're not, is it ok to back out and find a new one?
The only way to find out is to play with them.
Finding a good group is like dating.
Why canāt I chat in any of the channels
Voice Chat? Because you haven't been in the server long enough (24 hours).
Perhaps your Discord needs an update and reboot.
I think if they show a modicum of respect, if they listen to you, and if you agree on what kind of fun youāre looking to have (broadly, with room for compromise), youāll probably have a good time. If things like that are missing, you should likely leave. The wisdom is no D&D is better than bad D&D.
Im struggling to learn how the whole negative saves on enemies is best used
Like lets take web for instance. Is it better to spam a few mind slivers then cast web on the enemies slivered? Or is it better to just cast web immediately. Like the risk vs reward is fuzzy. 1-2 turns of an enemy attacking for a slightly better chance to ensnare them all which isnt guaranteed? Or just yolo it and get 1-2 enemies out from the start of combat. Its difficult judging risk and reward
I ran out of spells realized my only damaging cantrip was mind sliver and well it did 2 damage and the enemy passed the int check flawlessly so like kinda useless isnt it? If i had the fire bolt the damage would have been worth more than a chance to get a better proc chance
Am i supposed to open the fight with debuffs? Confusing
depends on how you want to play, and there generally isn't a "right" way to do things. Mind Sliver can be used in that way, and make it more likely that enemies will fail a subsequent save, but it's not something you should count on happening all the time. I would say casting web first would generally be better, as it makes it difficult terrain regardless, and they have to save against it at the start of their turn in the webs.
Yeah so far the best combo ive seen is stuff like
bonus action misty step then use mind sliver on some enemy who might get hit by a spell like repositioning or something
the other one is mind sliver first and hope it hits if it does then use bonus action mind thrust
im also a divination wizard so i can do some shenanigans with portent
just a lot of rng involved but thats dnd so whatever
yup, dice love to tell a story
HELLO GUYSSSS
do you guys have any tips for first campaign
I've never played DnD before but I've basically watched most of Critical Role and Dimension 20's series. I've been researching some basic rules and stuff but because there're so many rules and terms that I don't understand it's making me nervous to even join a campaign. I would totally play as a Dungeon Master for a campaign if I'm given the chance. I'm just nervous I'll mess up
I'd suggest playing first if that is a possibility. There are basic rules, but to be honest, you don't need most of them. Watching videos and jumping in headfirst is sometimes the best option.
If you want to DM, dunl7982 has already pointed you towards the best adventure to do so, which is free.

I don't suppose I can redeem the player's handbook on DnD beyond if I already own the physical version is there?
nope. the essentials kit has a 50% off code for it but thats it
You can use the homebrew tools to recreate any of those character options for free, though.
Or you can buy just the parts you need instead. (Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.)
Would someone double check my new character sheet? Wanna make sure I filled it out right
#1045165827068002374 is the perfect place to get things double checked
is there a good way to visualize aoe spells on a grid?
I don't know if I am just thinking stupid but I find the idea of using cones and circles on a grid kind of weird
Does a spell always come out of the center of a grid?
Would be a string good for determining aoe spells?
do chimeric creatures from icewind dale have their own statblock?
yes
ok i know this is almost invading to ask but.. is there anyone out here who is playing dnd in NC United States? if so, could you dm me and we could work out something that would be safe for both sides? i swear i would've never gone online and asked this but i feel like im going crazy; no one at my school plays dnd, there are no dnd stores nearby with bulletin boards i could post, and i tried meetup dot com but all of the events are for decently older people agh
ik i could always do online campaigns but the ones ive tried i just really dont vibe with..
Sorry to hear that
yeah... i dont really know what to do atp
it would seriously be great if someone made a dating style app but its just to find dnd players in ur area
I do have a campaign that's just starting up but it's online
good luck!! Im just starting to set up a new campaign too
Thanks, just looking for one more person. We had one, but...eeeeeh....things didn't work out
it do be like thatš
have u tried messaging in the looking for a group??
from what ive seen people jump on applications
I'm considering it. I'm looking to help teach new players who haven't had a lot of chances to find games and that's gonna be what I do if I don't find anyone today or tomorrow
respect fr
i..........do not have to patience to teach my friends how to play dnd anymore lol
Patience is something I'm trying to work on :p It's not always easy but watching people get all excited over the hobby is so rewarding
it is!!
Patience, I mean, not respect, derp
pfff message still understood
i had one of those rare moments when i got a friend into it and we clicked really well but she had to move away sadly
They all show up with bright eyes and new characters...
And then I get to crush their spirits! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA...no, wait.
Oof, that sucks though. This is one reason I love online play. I can now play with friends who've moved away that I thought I'd never have the chance to play with again
giving ur pcs trauma is what dms LIVE for šŖ
true true
if i really cant find anyone i may just give up and go back to online aaaaah
it's just frustrating when i can't see someone's face when im talking to them rip
um hi
hellooo
yo!
hi
I'm very new to this thing
Welcome š
