There dice, you roll them they give you numbers I’m not sure what your asking? Have you read the basic rules?
Im sorry i think this is just me being stupid
But what i mean was should i do no rolls or 1d8
... You mean dice?
Yes
That question doesn't really make sense
D&D uses a whole range of dice; d4s, d6s, d8s, d10s, d12s, d20s and d100s
Should i play a game with or wothout dice
You will use some or all of them as you play
D&D uses dice
You cannot play D&D without dice
This says no rolls
Depends on what class you're playing. You should be fine with a d20 or two and whatever you need for a weapon or something
Some abilities and spells don't require a roll
Ok
That doesn't mean you can play D&D without dice
But just to be sure, I'd have at least one of each type of die
What weapon are you using?
I havent started yet but my character sheet says battleaxe
He got so many things wrong
No

Where can i do that
So yeah, all you need so far is going to be a d20, d8 and d10
A d12 when you level up
... That's it really
Try reading the rules first, that'll make a lot of other stuff make sense
You cannot possibly have read the rules within 2 minutes

Hey folks, where is the best place to find a group for newcomers?

Looked there, problem is I'm from UK, so, most of the folks run games US time. Which is around 2-4AM for me :))
Keep an eye on the channel, GMT adjacent DMs post there too
Thanks will definitely do. Regarding paid games what's the difference?
If there's much of it?
Paid games are just games where the DM charges a fee, usually per session, to run the game
It can be, yeah
roll20
D&D beyond forums
demiplane
r/lfg
Those are the places I'd look
I mean, there's a reason I love it so much
Well just need to find a group which loves roleplay/and make silly things happen and I hope i can learn
So this is my first time playing dnd
Idk if I have made a good enough backstory for my assimar paladin since it links to basically my 2 other backup characters that I would use if my child agnuis dei dies
I mean he basically was the inspiration in his cannon btw for one of his friend who's an elf to become a cleric and for a human to become a fighter
I haven't yet fleshed out their lore but I did make agnuis dei have a certain attachment problem which is that when he loses someone he cares about he basically loses faith in the world and immediately breakdown
I mean hell for the goddess he serves for knows of this flaw but still relies on him not because he's devoted to change but because he's the one to actually bring change along with the party
Is the lore good enough for this assimar paladin
Have you gotten a game yet?
Yes
The best person to ask then would be your DM
Okay
He knows the world that you are playing in. Therefore, he is the best person to help you flesh out your backstory and tie it closer with the world
That's more of a #dnd-discussion, #dnd-rules, or #dm-discussion question, depending on the context you're asking in
Oh
any new player friendly games happening soon
Please check #looking-for-players
Although 'happening soon' isn't really how one usually joins a D&D game
@crude musk What you think about this background
Tiberius Grindelwald is either a human or high elf paladin or a melee bruiser, regarding what party needs.
Tiberius had a hard life in exile for a crime he did not commit never having a place he called home. Always on the road, helping people and creatures where he can whilst studying a book of healing/magic that he found on a dead monk in a abandoned monastery he encoutered in his travels. Constantly praticing his swordplay and encountering a lot of trouble on roads be it bandits or monsters hes very proficient in using sword or sword/shield.
Tiberius is a friendly character even if hes been exiled he doesn't hold grudge against others.
That'd be a question for #1045165827068002374
Also generally speaking you shouldn't ping specific people for opinions on stuff (unless they've already engaged with you on the topic)
just a little bit of discord etiquette
Fairplay mate, my bad
theres a game starting at noon on Roll20 I assume thats cst?? about an hour from now if thats the case
You would have to ask the person running the game
its text only though so no headset or screen view
There is literally no way for anyone here to know
slotted for 1000 players, 789 signed up. No idea how that works
Again, we can't provide any answers, you would need to contact the DM
I have too many questions for a "text" only game.. lol I just thought others here would want to know
You're asking very specific questions about this game that only the DM would know
For text only games, they're usually played in one of two ways
- real time: usually played on Discords or Slack or another instant messaging platform, you just post messages in real time as if you were playing in person
- asynchronous: commonly played on forums, players will make a post and then leave and come back minutes or hours later to see if there's been an update. This is closer to the traditional meaning of 'play by post' where people would send chess moves to each other by mail
wasnt really asking any questioned, just stating the context of the game
This channel is for asking questions regarding getting started with D&D and the basics
So you were just chatting to yourself...?
What do new players do when they do not have miniatures? I decided to buy a few packs of these -- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z282L6H?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details as player tokens, and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B96S8YCX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for monsters/NPCs.
Or just use real coins or LEGOs?
I don't like LEGO for some reason, heh.
We use circle magnets for enemies on a magnetic whiteboard, and we sprung for character minis until we can get started on a collection
Bottle caps, hot glue, and whatever loose objects you find around the house also work great.
YOu can use literally anything in place of miniatures - coins, pieces of candy, bottle caps, dice, your imagination
Yep. If you want to go real, real cheap... 😜

So I've been heading about a certain thing called peasant railgun
How does that work and why does it work and is banned by multiple dms
Is this some experienced player stuff I haven't heard of
it's basically bs but it "works" buy using a large number of peasants pass an object down a line making it move very fast in one 6 sec turn
Hi so I'm new and played dand once how does one play on discord?
Or even just through text, if you prefer.
You really just need some means of communication. What that is and what other tools get added to it just depends on the group.
This article covers a few available options:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Is somthing going on with DnD Beyond? Twitter is going bannanas over somthing about hasbro?
If it's about the new OGL license you can join the angst-fest in #ogl-discussion-archive.
Basically it may impact 3rd party publishers of D&D material.
Quick question on “Primal companion take action” does this mean that during my turn I can use either my action or bonus action to have my wolf attack prior to its turn where it can use its own action to attack again?
The only action your Primal Companion takes is that which you order it to do with your character's bonus action. Rules as written, you can't use your action to command your Primal Companion, only your bonus action. The exception is the dodge action, which it will take automatically if you don't give it an instruction, and the attack action if you sacrifice one of your attacks.
Oh, so the only way my wolf attacks is if I use my action or bonus action to command it to attack? It doesn’t have its own turn?
Your wolf will attack if you sacrifice one of your attacks during the attack action, or take a bonus action to command them.
You and your Primal Companion have a unique bond in that you both act during the same turn. You can make an attack, have your wolf move and then you can take your bonus action to have your wolf take an action all on the same turn. Your wolf's turn is your turn, and vice versa.
Gotcha, thanks for the clarification!
I'm trying to get into D&D and I don't know what I'm someone help me

you should read the first chapter of the basic rules in it's entirety, then pick a race and class that sound interesting from chapters 2 and 3 and read those bits, then read chapter 7
Okay thanks
i wouldn't worry about chapter 4 until something really calls to you, then you can use that chapter to flesh out the character you have in your mind
And also I'm guessing it's going to be a very hard process to find people to play with
not really, this server has a looking for players channel. you just have to make sure the people you're seeking to join are okay with having a new player, outside of this server there is a handful of subreddits and forums made for connecting ttrpg players together
is it a problem that I'm 14 or no
it could be
I probably just have to find people that are going to be okay with it
and that's why I said it's going to be hard
at your age it might be easier to play with people you know irl, lost mines and the basic rules are both free on ddb
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
all you need is a couple of people and your phones, ddb can handle all of the dice rolling, and there's maps you can print out in there already
ok
maps aren't even necessary, you can just imagine everything too
I mean it sucks because no one in IRL will actually play with me cuz no one My Town plays D&D at least I know of
do you know at least 2 people who might want to learn how to play?
some friends or siblings?
my very first game was me and one friend learning how to play
Yeah, small town makes it hard to get into D&D. Thankfully alot of people got comfortable playing online during the pandemic so you could try find an online campaign if in-person isn't working out.
You could ask people if they're okay with playing with someone your age, there's online communities of only teens as well
Do you have a local game store?
https://locator.wizards.com/ try looking here
Hi all; complete noob here, never played DnD but interested in trying it!
Welcome to the hobby, we have lots of useful links pinned in this channel
thanks; to be honest, I just have no idea where to start!
Reading the basic rules is always a good start. Not the whole thing, just the chapters on making a character, using ability scores, and actions in combat is a good start
Then trying your hand at making a character, either on paper or D&D Beyond
Once you've got that under your belt, you can try looking for a group

But if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
im very new to dming and have some experience as a dnd player but I recently started dming for some friends and my players recently decided to just peace out and go on a buccaneering pirate adventure so I'm just wondering what are some things I can have them do so far I'm thinking about having them explore a island of cyclopean masses I read the call of Cthulhu and when they deiced to go on out pirating thats what instantly came to mind but once they get there I don't really know what they could do any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you :)
It’s obviously different for everyone, but don’t railroad them into doing anything, give them the tools to be able to do whatever and just see what happens, those moments can create the best adventures If done right too
Obviously this is just my perspective on it though
Would you have any ideas of like stuff that I could offer them to do we're all fairly new with one exception of 2nd ed knowledge I don't want to railroad them but I also just don't really know what their options are or when I could have them encounter enemies
Kobold Press' Prepared! could come in handy
I'll check it out thank you! :>
You’re wanting to have explore some cyclopean island so maybe add a few other stuff to do there like maybe have some lost adventure party from some adventurers guild somewhere or have there be a random friendly cyclops thingy they find, just add random stuff that will allow them to have more stuff to interact with idk it all depends on your world
I haven’t read call of Cthulhu yet so I can’t help with that
What did he say lol
i mentioned that book about a whale
Cyclopean refers to just like ancient architecture but I think that a lost party could be interesting for them
Ah that sucks
that book, but a kraken could make a good nemesis
moby click
for a while
My bad, but yeah just add some extra stuff for them to do so that they don’t get bored
just don't let it be too aggressive
yeah their still about lvl 4 so I'm not sure about that yet but I'll keep that on back burner incase they want to stay as pirates until later levels
yeah that kobold book is pretty helpful I'm reading it rn
Yeah, for me when I’m DMing I’ve gotta add some random stuff here and there bc some of my players are super immature and young so they like befriending the enemy and doing very immoral things whereas more mature and older parties like the attention to detail and somethings along with giving them odd magic items
Based I should check it out
if they're on a sailing ship, they have a 3d10 and 5d10 attack already, and if they have a crew they can even use those attacks
theres only 3 of them as of now they kinda just stole a boat and got some very lucky rolls so I could introduce some sort of aquatic monster for them
if they're pirating they could pick up a crew and negotiate a portion of their loot as pay, if they're being a bit more honourable they could negotiate a fairly cheap wage
it would most likely lead towards the latter as they are morally questionable however they do have a LN paladin who follows a honorable faith
a random sailor would probably be an unskilled hireling, costing your party 2sp/day per person
you could also argue they'd have proficiency with water vehicles, costing 2gp since they'd be skilled
for a permanent retainer though, i'd make it 2sp, most sailors are just swabbing the poop deck all day anyway
yeah I think that could work they aren't rich but they could afford a few unskilled sailors to man cannons
Can someone help me understand spell preparation and stuff? From what I understand my cleric can prepare a certain number of spells from the cleric spell list, but what determines which spells I'm able to prepare? Can I just prepare any of the spells available to my cleric at their spellcasting level? Or do I have to know certain spells before I can prepare them?
Do clerics lose their divine power if they do some morally questionable things
no, paladins used to but you can't lose your powers in 5e.
So what happens if you lose your divine powers as a paladin
Prepare from all the spell
So if my cleric has first level cleric spells available, I can prepare any of those spells (at least as much as I'm able to prepare)
I don't have to learn the specific spells
Is it instant death or oath breaker because I was wondering
That makes it a lot less complicated than I thought it was
spells in 5e have up to 3 components, Verbal, Somatic, Material.
preparing a spell requires you to have the material components on hand, following rules as written. but a lot of DMs ignore this because it turns fights into accounting simulator
And makes me more versatile than I expected
You got it think of it like you have a big hymm book with all the spells but you can only remember a few per day
I was told any material components that don't show a gold value can be replaced by having a spellcasting focus, and only spells where the component has a gold value are spells where I need to have the component
Is that not the case?
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
hi uhm, I'm new and creating a pc right now while reading the handbook, i have a question is there a certain background allowed for a Dragonborn paladin?
So any cleric spell is valid, as long as you have spell slots for that level.
Gotcha
I don’t believe any of the backgrounds found in the basic rules or PHB have class or race restrictions.
Any Background is allowed for any kind of character :)
Well I'm glad to know all the spell mistakes I was making during the first session as a cleric were solely giving me a disadvantage and none were giving me an advantage
And none were even relevant so
You also need any component that’s consumed by that casting. Those can’t be replaced by a focus.
thank you! wait so what happens to the tools that the background comes with?
oh okay thank you!
So this might be strange to ask but how many races have darkvision?
you have starting gold which can be used to buy the tool pre-adventure though
Most of them, probably. 😅
I’d guess at least half.
About 90%
I think we are at a point where we have more with darkvision then without
from the basic rules, dwarves, elves, half elves, half orcs, and tieflings
and gnomes
so all but human, halfling and dragonborn
So another question on race but specifically the assimars
How old can they get
Im seeing double o.o
As for what happens when a paladin breaks his oath, it can be pretty severe.
They lose all of their divine powers (altenratively gain oathbreaker subclass), and in the worst cases eventually become a death knight
Hey found someone with the same name
Halfling don’t get it
Hello
Up to the DM honestly. It's important to talk that out to make it immersive and make sense too
true, i misremembered
I was answering as per direct rules a question that sas asked a bit earlier, but yeah i am aware its mostly dm discretion
Hello I'm new new to both the discord and someone who's never played D&D. I'm really wanting to play since it wasn't a popular thing in my area growing up. I'm 31 so I'm looking for friends who was are welcoming of newbies

From what I have read it would seem that a lot of the rules are based around the DM. They can allow and disallow things based on the fun / gameplay speed. Unless it is a league type setting or somewhat other than just for fun and adventures. They do have core rules / other strict guidelines
The rules are there to establish a baseline, the dm can cheat bend and break them as they want to establish narrative
The original version (for 5e) said they could live up to 160 years. The current version would fall under this general rule:
The typical life span of a player character in the D&D multiverse is about a century, assuming the character doesn’t meet a violent end on an adventure.

Also umm big question In assimar radiance thingies
How do they work and what can they do
Is there a reason why age is a personal information that shouldn't be shared wouldn't that just be a preference for other players that will like to play with someone around their age? I don't want to be disrespectful or break the rules I just want to make sure that I play with people around my age versus playing with someone that's younger than me if that makes sense.
We have people of varied ages, in general its non important information that you can share in private with any groups youre looking to join to decide if youd be comfortable there
But publicly listing your age doesnt benefit anyone but can harm you.
What do I actually do in this as I’m not sure

Like Ik how to play DnD but idk how to play online and stuff
Yea
Ok I'll take care noy to share that information thank you
If I want to mention my age, thats weird that I get polite warning.
this link in that embed https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online has everything for that
Its mostly done via discord calls, roll20, etc. Youd join a game using the looking channels and they have their way of setting up their games.
Thank u!
the path of least resistance is to make a character on ddb, join a discord community for playing, join their campaign on ddb and use theatre of the mind to play. some sort of VTT can make visualising everything a little bit easier though
Btw do u use irl dice when playing?
ddb has a built in dice roller that can automatically add bonuses for you, but irl dice can also be used
That depends on you and your group.
Some groups allow it; others don't.
Ok
Rolling where people can't see requires an extra level of trust between the group members.
5d4 means 5 four sided die yes?
DDB = What?
D&D Beyond
Thank you
You can create a character here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
I’ve done that already lol I did it before I joined this
Is it like 1 time campaigns?
Also how do we know when we should join or when we can
Silly question regarding “character creation”… do I have to choose the races that are in there or can I be something that isn’t?
It's not a silly question.
The short answer is you can choose whatever you want. However, the long answer is that it's up to your DM what's allowed in their campaign setting.
What race you want to be? There are lots of options but only some show up in the basic rules you have to pay for the others on DDB
My campaign setting is in the Forgotten Realms so I don't allow playable races from Eberron or Ravinca.
Go to #looking-for-players see if there are any games you can join or do you have a local game store?
Yeah it all depends. If a player has a printed race they want that i didnt plan for ill work it into my world for them as long as it fits the tone, but for many dms you may not get that leeway, every world has lore and a story and being a black sheep makes things complicated sometimes
Then be one they can look like any bird you want
Flavor is always free. There are all kind of birds used for the looks of Aarakocra. Many also use them to play as harpies
kenku are also already crowlike as well
But, I wanted to be a “Short Cat (like a halfling) to play as a Bard-like Puss in Boots?
Sorry I love watched the movie like 20+ times already lol
i have a question, do i need a dm when it comes to pc creation?
no, but dm's usually reserve the right to veto a PC, most won't though
DMs usually have some input. like what options are allowed, house rules, what method of stat creation is used
ah okay thank you
and of course, how a PC might fit into the world of the adventure
wait so i can just create a whole pc and just leave the stats blank?
that being said, its fine to make a first draft so to speak for a PC
you could leave the stats blank, or you could use standard array for example and then redo stats if your DM wants a different method
I’ve heard players are boycotting WoTC and canceling their sub to DDB. Is this something I should be concerned about or can I play the game without the DDB app?
Short tabaxi
i think I'll leave it blank, I'm still new, thank you!
You wouldn’t happen to have the character sheet/info (link) on that would you?
you can always play the game without DDB. its much older than the site itself.
I tried looking on the #looking-for-players and every time I try pressing on one that suits me it says u are not qualified so idk what to do
Haven’t got the link to it at the moment sorry
is uhm a martial weapon two handed?
only weapons with the two handed property are two handed
Some are some are not https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment
some martial weapons are, some aren't. it's a whole category of weapons that are used by warriors
so a Warhammer is?
to figure out what a weapon does and requires, read its properties. Warhammers are versatile
versatile means you can wield a weapon in one or two hands
it's versatile, so yes but optionally no
Guys I’m not sure what to do cause it won’t let me join groups on the #looking-for-players
All good
like they said, you can look at the chart and see it doesn't have two-handed but it does have versatile, meaning you can choose whether to wield it in one hand or two hands
it says versatile 1d10, so if you hold it in two hands you get to deal 1d10 damage instead of 1d8
are you clicking on "view submission"? thats not necessary. just go the the threat below
i just have an image of Reinhart
his weapon would be a maul
Each weapon will specify which properties it has. And the rules/PHB describes what each property means
Looking to DM a 5e game
Ohhh thanks I’ll try that
maul?
Pbp
???
a really big warhammer, its a weapon in the game
that sounds like a two handed weapon
it is
Warhammers can be used one handed
Mauls and warhammers are different weapons
so i just need to find a specific type of Warhammer?
no warhammer is a weapon. Maul is a different weapon. like shortsword and greatsword are different weapons. but they are both swords. so a maul is a really big hammer, a warhammer is a medium sized hammer, and a light hammer is a small hammer
I’ve done it now thank u 🙂
Mauls are listed separately on the weapon chart Ratty linked, under M for Maul
and since a Warhammer is versatile i can drop the shield if i need to, to double the dmg of the hammer?
it's not double, it's only an increase to 1d10 from 1d8
i see i see I'll take note of that
Maul does 2d6
No, for a couple of reasons. One, the two-handed damage roll is not double the one-handed. Two, it takes an action to take off your shield, and another action to put it back on. So swapping it in and out mid-fight is not very efficient.
yeah dropping shields is a bit cumbersome
i see i see okay I'll take note of that
I would just use the maul, personally
i need to drop the shield of i want to deal more dmg yes?
yeah, a shield takes up a hand
yeah shields are usually a trade of. more defence but less damage
i see so if i carry the shield in one hand and the hammer on the other, i need to use an action to drop the shield so that i can deal more dmg with the hammer
The difference between 1d8 and 1d10 is only an average of 1 damage, I'd instead decide before a fight breaks out if you're going to be 1 handing or 2 handing and stick to that
i see got you
so I can't use an action to yeet the shield at the enemy yes?
you can in theory, but it would take you multiple rounds to make up for the damage you lose by dropping the shield instead of attacking that round
Throwing a shield is an improvised weapon, that's only 1d4 damage
still dmg tho
But you've just dropped your Armor Class by 2 AND you aren't doing as much damage as you would if you just attacked with your actual weapon
hmmm true that, let me take note of that too
Found a Class/Race called “Felis” which a cats that are 3ft tall but would that even be allowed in game?
That would be 3rd-party or "homebrew" content, so you'd have to check with your Dungeon Master
depends on the DM, many dont allow homebrew. Tabaxi are an official options from Monsters of the multiverse, but you gotta pay for the book or at least buy the race on ddb
Okay well I’ll work on two sheets, one for the cat like character and the Aarakocra one.
A DM might be willing to let you play as a halfling flavoured as a cat, or maybe even a tabaxi that is short and has the mechanical downsides of a halfling (no heavy weapons, disadvantage on grapples, 25ft of movement, etc)
Ask first though
Even when it comes to official race/class options, check with your DM. Some of them will have restrictions based on the lore of their world. Always ask what character options are allowed before rolling something up that you might not be allowed to play 🙂
"Lucky" would fit a cat. "Brave" not so much. 🤣
Are you saying Puss in Boots isn’t “Brave” 🤨
They just made a whole move about ||him getting scared||, so… 😜
He’s facing his fears, but yes you’re right they did make a movie and it’s amazing. 👏👏👏

ight ive never even touched dnd before so i dont really know what im meant to do, like i want to try it without having to buy anything so i know if i like it what do i do to do that
You can usually do that though it can be a bit tricky. You may have to either find an in-person group that can share books or a group that runs stuff on D&D Beyond that has books they can share with you
to be honest i live in a rural seaside town of primarily old people i dont think finding an in-person group is an option, and i have no idea what dnd beyond is
it's an online platform that a lot of people use to store character sheets and share books between people who are in a game together
is there like a website or series of videos here i can use to figure stuff out

yep, there's a template. I don't think I can post links here but if you look for 5E D&D fillable character sheet you should find one 🙂
is there an lfg channel here? i feel like the best way to get into it would be asking questions and learning as i go rather than trying to memorise everything and then go in

do you need to know about the campaign youre going into before you write the character sheet or is it the other way around
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L basic of making a character
Yes, it helps to know the campaign setting first. The DM's campaign setting may not allow certain playable races and/or classes.
Keep looking.
Find a good table is like dating — you may be ignored, ghosted, have a bad relationship, some drama, and breakups but eventually you'll find "the one."
(I'm saying this as a married "forever DM.")
it's generally a good idea. Partly because some DMs will want you to use different, or even special, character creation methods and you don't know what they'll ask you to do until you sit down with them
That said, making characters is also fun and can be good practice
yeah until i get something going with someone ill just make a bunch of characters
itll be good practice for my gcse too
my descriptions been kinda falling off after i stopped reading as much
The rules and description for the spell describe exactly how it works and what (if any) damage it does.
Do you have a specific spell in mind?
No worries - feel free to ask again when you get back.

Hello Guys,
I am currently seeking some help. There are thousands of opinions to the different pre written storys from woc. My group of 5 all beginner friends, including me, are trying to get further then the base and starterset. Does someone have a recommendation for something like a pre written story including maps and all the stuff that you need for this special campaign. Or would be nice if you could buy it separately. We are already able to level characters and create them. Sure not at pro level but its decent and lots of fun. Preferably something in German language, our English isn't all that proficient. I'm really thankful for some advice:)

I’m sorry but sentinel triggers when an ally is attack and you get to strike them right?
I’m assuming this means you can strike them if they’re within your weapon range?
No.
Hi
Anyone new to DND need help with making a character? I'm a DM and love the character creation process the most! I'd be glad to help anyone who dms me!
When a creature makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.
Okay so I have been wanting to get into D&D for a long time, but I have not a clue where to start. Would anyone be willing to give me a gist of how to even play or get started? Can you play online or do you need a whole board and what not? If anyone responds please @ me if possible so I see it
Yes you can play online, or IRL at a local game store or at home with friends, the basic rules are free. Check the pins in this channel for alll the links
I recently purchased the starter set so I can get my family game night setup for Sunday. Seems to be a good way to get everyone together.
Going to have them choose one of the premade characters for when we start. This way they can get a grasp on the gameplay before allowing them to build their own characters.
Any suggestions?
Only advice I have is to focus on fun and make sure to set expectations and boundaries. Also remember it's a game and the point is to have fun.
Thank you I’m sure our first adventures will be slow yet we will soon have other adventures to go on and help build our characters. 😉
Make sure to make at least one character for every archetype, like a short ranged character, mid ranged and a ranged character for each family member. Also be sure to be unique with the races but don't over complicate anything
Hey everyone,
My partner and I are hoping to learn about the world of D&D. We bought a starter set based on the 'Lost Mine of Phandelver'. We have read some rules and have a small understanding about the game. We have agreed between ourselves that this set would be more fun to play with some friends and are therefore going to hold off until we can get a group of us together.
We had a quick google and found that we can find a group of players online. Does anyone feel like they would be able to host/DM a game with 2 new players or tell us where we may be able to find someone who can?

hello uhm do we have a dice bot?
Avrae is a Discord bot that DnDBeyond owns (and now D&D).
You can learn more in #ddb-avrae-help.
Commands can be run in #ddb-avrae-commands.
It's a homebrew subclass from the D&D liveplay stream "Critical Roll".
It can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/paladin#OathoftheOpenSea
i see okay thank youuuu
It's not official D&D material so very much up to your DM and group to decide to allow it or not.
i see okay thank you
the faith in the character details what is that?
Generally speaking, a characters faith is in reference to which God/Pantheon they worship and/or believe in, but it might mean something different if you have any more context?
sorry no i don't have anymore context
Yeah it’s generally for whatever god your character primarily worships. It has more associated mechanics if you’re using the Theros book!
i see i see thank you
sorry i have a lot of questions, are there any gods related to nature or healing?
Do you have a player hand book?
yes, I'm looking at the appendix right now
can characters have special " aesthetics "? for example a spell that looks different but does the same exact thing
The DM generally has to give approval for stuff like that, but...yes
Ok! ty!
Yes, there is some advice in TCE for that exact thing.
tce?
Sorry Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
oh ty
I once ran a tabaxi mage who flavored mage hand as an 'invisible cat servant'. Because in his mind it was an invisible cat who say knocked small objects off shelves and stuff like that
No problem, theres a little picture of a farmer flavouring Magic Missile as spectral chickens.
Cute!
How would a character that only spoke in onomatopoeia be handled?
Like, recommended classes, subclasses and stuff like that
you'd get permission from the DM and rest of the table first. Many may not even allow it because it sounds like a very gimmicky character that would make things difficult to run.
In general, characters that can't communicate and can't properly join in the roleplaying and interaction get old very fast. Even if they start off sounding neat, they start to wear on the rest of the table after a few sessions.
But if everyone gives permission? Maybe kenku bard who 'speaks' in melody
Hmmm... thank you!
Good that you started with "get permission from everyone", I tend to forget that sometimes.
no worries 🙂 it's easy to get carried away when you have a concept that really speaks to you. Just that in my experience characters that are primarily based off a single gimmick like that tend to get frustrating in practice. I can see it being funny in the right campaign if you're playing in a more silly/lighthearted campaign, but if the DM is trying to give a dramatic villain speech while you beatbox in the background I imagine some people may get irked :p
Oh no not necessarily just beatboxing, but literally speaking in sound effects
Unless you're actively playing out a Samurai Champloo campaign, in which case it might be super appropriate.
I know, I was just thinking of one amusing application of the ability
heheee
starts using vicious mockery but it's Nujabes
oh yeah, there are absolutely campaigns it would fit, especially if you're doing something silly/off the wall
right, i'll keep the idea for "goofy campaign"
Right, one more question if yall are inclined
How would characters based off of the Awaken spell be handled?
hi everyone! please I would like to understand why in Monster Manual Goblin has 6 on stealth
tiny sneaky lil fey
Those can be fun. I tend to do more goofy oneshots myself than full campaigns but whatever your table enjoys!
As for characters based off the awaken spell it really depends on the game. I don't think I'd run a campaign with 'four standard adventurers and Bob the Bear'. But I might run a campaign involving five awakened animals setting out to find their missing druid friend.
sorry? 😄 I am a new player/master
nod goblins are small, about child-sized, and cowardly. They like to sneak around in the shadows rather than attack openly
That's as best as I can explain it, I'm sorry
Someone else with way more experience with the lore/game would be able to explain and with more words
ok, I see. So there is no special calculation involved. It is how it is by "lore" basically, right?
Yeah, basically. Monsters get what skills make sense for the monster
And remember that when running 'special' or individual/unique monsters you as DM can always give them different skills
If you want to have Baboom the goblin warrior, fiercest member of his tribe, you might decide that he doesn't have stealth and has intimidation instead because he's at JUST the right height to stab you where it's really gonna hurt and he knows it.
Glad to help 🙂
sometimes DnD rules are overwhelming
Yup. As a DM you’re free to alter stat blocks as you see fit. Just don’t go too overboard with it as it can be frustrating for some players if the monsters get too consistently difficult/strange for the game they were expecting.
They can be a bit, especially when you're new
the faith doesn't have any effect on the pc yes?
I mean it can have a roleplaying effect as it matters for how they interact with NPCs and how NPCs might regard them, but no, no mechanical effect
i see i see okay thank you
Hi there. Pardon me for my intrusion. I am a wandering traveler who is seeking for an adventure
Could I know where can I find a party so I can join in?
you can scroll through #looking-for-players , that's where DMs post to search for players. see if any of their premises interest you and directly message the DM or use the thread attached to the post.
you can also use #750812887697588356 to post your own availability and interests in the hopes that a DM might contact you to join them.
In addition to the LFG channels here, you can check various Discords, MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you're looking for in-person games, check out any local libraries, games/comics stores, and/or hobby shops for D&D/tabletop programming.

Do I just get a feat when creating a character ?
I mean can I just choose one for free ?
Not normally. The DM could decide to change that though so ask your DM.
so the DM chooses how many feats I get ?
The DM decides if their D&D game will even use feats.
kk thanks
Normally by the rules you can chose a feat on a level where you would normally get a boost to your stats (ASI is what it's often called).
So instead of boosting your stats, you would pick a feat.
But again at the DM's discretion.

okay, thank you!
Certain races (variant human or custom lineage) and certain backgrounds (like the latest ones from Dragonlance) also give you a feat to start.
But yeah, best to check with your DM!
Why can I only choose school of evocation as a level 3 wizard ?
Wizards get their Arcane Tradition at level 2, and only Evocation is included in the free rules.
The Basic rules really only contain one subclass per class.
Yes the basic rules only contain what's in the SRD
I'm very confused, it says "When you reach 2nd level, you choose an arcane tradition, shaping your practice of magic through one of eight schools: Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, or Transmutation."
Yes, the rest of those are included in the PHB. If using an app or website like DnDbeyond, you must own the PHB to use them. Only Evocation is free to use.
wow ok
Think of the free Basic Rules like a video game demo. If you want the rest of the game you have to buy the books.
What are the ability score increase and feats of the deep gnome subrace ? It doesn't say on the phb
Or do I just treat it as a rock gnome ?
Answered in #dnd-rules
As a wizard I can choose either a component pouch or an arcane focus. Does it mean that I can cast spells without an arcane focus ?
You would need a component pouch instead if the spell requires a Material component.
When would I need an arcane focus then ?
If you don't want a component pouch.
Component pouch and arcane focus are flavour.
Alright thanks
If you have neither than you can't cast any spells that has the Material component in its description.
About the book of lore in the scholar's pack. Do I choose what it's about ?
So if your wizard is thrown in jail with no component pouch or arcane focus then they can't cast any prepared spells that have the Material component.
Ask your DM.
Alright thank you
Soo I just got dnd beyond what and how do I join a campaign?
That’s not necessarily true. You could just get the item(s) listed for the material component.
Find a group of folks to play with. In person, online, over email, over Discord, on forums, on a virtual table top (VTT).
Ice Knife, for example. It would be pretty easy to get a drop of water to cast the spell, even in prison.

You can just download the rules?

Hello, just curious as a new player with what is the best app to use for; character sheets, skills, & dice rolls
I like using DnDBeyond but honestly find what works best for you.
DDB doesn't have all the books in it unless... I buy it... hmmm
Yes. The not-SRD material needs to be purchased regardless of platform/tool used. DnDBeyond just puts it all into one nice location and has a nice character sheet builder and digital dice rolling.
where do i look for a party to join?

Are Warlocks more complicated than other classes?
I watched the hand booker helper on Spellcasting and they said they where gonna explain them in a different video.
In some ways they're easier, at least mechanically.
The very simple version is that for 1st- through 5th level spells, you only have a handful of slots, but 1) they're always of the highest level you're able to cast as a Warlock(up to 5th-level spells), and 2) they refresh on a Short Rest instead of a Long Rest. That means you don't have to budget your spell slots over the course of a full day. There's more, but those are the Cliff's Notes. The Warlock class description in the Basic Rules/Players Handbook will give you the rest.
Ok, the handbooker helper video made me think there was more to it.
Can I give someone else gm perms in role 20
You can create your own account on Roll20 and be a GM...
Yes
New to 5E and about to start with a new group, have previously played pathfinder and 3.5e. Was looking for a bit of advice for character creation and whether the archetype ideas i've got are actually supported by the mechanics. One of my characters in pathfinder was a halfing witch, focused on jinxing enemies and trickster/illusion type stuff both in and out of combat. Would an archfey warlock, either fairy or maybe halfling be a suitable way to do that in 5e?
Archfey warlock would be a way to get that feel.
You could also go lore bard -- the bard spell list has a good amount of debuff and trickery spells, and the College of Lore gets one of my favorite debuff abilities in the game, the one that straight up decreases an enemy roll. Also they gave the ability to pick up extra bonus spells that you could use for on-theme jinxes.
There's already a bard in the group so i wouldn't want to overlap too much with them, but i'll look into it if it doesn't seem i can make what i need with the archfey. Thanks for the tip 🙂
No prob! Witch is a really cool class and I wish I could direct you to a direct 5e version
How common is items and abilities that give sight in dark/dim light? Fairy doesn't have any racial ones, wondering if i should use an invocation on devils sight or is it not worth it?
It's easy for someone in the party to pick up the Light cantrip. Devil's Sight is handy for being able to see in magical darkness, though, something that can be very handy once you get the darkness spell
I've put together a basic concept, that i think would work, would love any feedback or suggestions. I know it has basically no direct damage causing abilities, that's intentional https://pastebin.com/rUEahiwT
Hello, i am completely new to dnd. I have played once 15 years ago, but did not understand the concept at the time 😛 How would you go about getting into it for the first time? I was thinking it would be fun to join a game over discord sometime, but where do i start? I have no idea what book and what edition i should start learning with :S
Hello and welcome 😄 There are some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel. The current edition of the game, the 5th edition or 5e, is probably your best bet to get into as it has the most players I believe. The Basic Rules are free and all you need to get started
Oh, should have looked at the pinned messages. 🙈 5e it is then, thank you! 😄
No problem. Have a read through the Basic Rules, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in here 🙂

What are some good guides/resources for running Lost Mine of Phandelver that are written for DMs that have never played DnD before? A lot of the guides I see online for running the adventure assume prior knowledge
I could run it as written, but I've seen some videos and articles talking about various shortcomings of the module, e.g., the first encounter being too deadly for PCs
This link has some resources
Not so much balancing changes though, but you can drop enemy AC or HP a little if you notice your players are getting stomped
I need advice
I agreed to duel a chaotic evil friend of mine in a pop fight but
Pvp*
I'm a paladin he is a druid
He has 3 level 1 spells and I have 0
How screwed am I?
what level are you both?
4
what druid circle?
He said moon druid but idk
then you are screwed
He took sorcerer feat
i feel this is not appropriate for a newcomer channel. though there's the matter of that you do get 1st level spells as a 4th level paladin
not because of the spells though
I assumed they are just out of spell slots for the day
No I have ran out
We are on a burning bridge
The only thing I can see that would work
Is if I had just a single spell slot
is it hard to find a campaign that suits?
like a campaign that suits for the different rules and all
im just having trouble
its fine idk how to phrase it

Hello
Hey there, I'm new to DND, but it always sounded like somthing i could get behind
Im a huge Fantasy fan of multiple movie and game franchises, (Lord of the Rings/Elderscrolls) but when I came across the TV show “The Legend of Vox Machina” it was the first time i really wanted to confront this fandom, or community?
im looking for anyone who could give me a nice entrance to the whole universe, someone once told me i would make a great "Dungeon master" and that i should read like 4 books, but well.. thats not really my style X3
I don't think you actually have to read the books, just the guiding parts
Hello! I'm completely new to DnD and I'm not sure what to do to get into all of this. To be honest it seems a little overwhelming at the moment. I'm looking for someone or a community that might be able to help me out? I know that's not some people's thing and thats fine! But if you are able to help in any way I would greatly appreciate it!
^ same! x3
... I really am the wrong person to try and help people lol
i just read the seemingly important parts in the books

forgot about that command
That should get you started.
thanks!
If you're trying to play with folks you don't know, you should learn the basics of the game. At least skim the rules (though reading them in full will likely help the most). Assuming you want to play and not DM, make a character or two for practice. Then try to find a group.
im mostly looking for anything that can help me create my world further, im not a writer or aynthing, i keep everything in my head x3 but im looking to come up with my own world (everything original) to probably DM for friends
im having troubles understanding the Alignmeant chart
The importance of the alignment chart has waned significantly in 5e. While it can be a good guideline for determining your character's general approach to things, it can be ignored. That being said, what is troubling you?
well if a character really just does wathever they feel like doing, does that make them Chaotic Evil? even if what they feel like doing varies from "good" and "evil" ?
i have seen someone explain that "lawful" means a character has strong values they believe in, not specifically that they follow outside laws, the whole thing is very confusing x3
If someone does whatever they want, they would be among the chaotic alignments. Chaotic good if everything they "just do" is good, chaotic neutral if their actions do not inspire good nor evil, and chaotic evil if their tendancies are evil.
A character that has strong believes, perhaps even a personal set of rules, would be Lawful Neutral.
thanks! i think i got the hang of it tough, "Lawful" = Personal Values and "Chaotic" means they dont act out of Values but just how they feel, that must mean "Neutral" means they do things cause thats how they grew up being naturally then right?
Lawful means that the following of rules is important to that character's way of life. Personal values can be an example of those rules, but most commonly they are the laws of the land.
Can you actually seduce a dragon?
It's a tired trope.
Brass Dragons are known for enjoying meaningful conversations with mortals. Paired with their ability to shapechange into a humanoid form, I'd say it is well within reason for a particularly capable individual to seduce one
Yikes
Dear me indeed-
Hahaha, I feel like I accurately answerd their question lol. Obviously don't do it if thats not what your table is about.
Also I'd strongly warn against trying to trivialize something as complex as developing/building a relationship to simple dice rolls.
"But I rolled a Nat 20 on my Persuasion!!!"
I don't believe that anybody asked if it were possible to seduce a creature with a mere dice roll. The question was, weather it was possible to seduce a dragon. It is.
.... i don't see why the passive aggressive language was necessary for that. IMO he did give a good breakdown of a certain typeof dragon with which romance is vaguely possible per lore, asking the DM and table is a given.
And you did so excellently. Informing new players of the importance of a session 0 is great. But they should also be made aware of the freedom of liberty this game offers, and all the forms it can take. I believe we both had valid information to impart.
It's a tired trope don't perpetuate it more.
cant believe that meme question gets more commotion then people (like me) trying to get in to dnd in the first place
whoever came up with the "can i seduce dragon" initially was a genius
ya i agree
im still stuck trying to figure out if a dnd game needs dice and stats, or if thats optional x3
You need dice and stats.
i do
Yeah to be honest even I'm surprised
The commotion is because it's a tired trope someone always asks at least once a month.
i saw "homebrews" where a thing, where pretty much any rules can be customized, would that not include things like using dice or character stats?
makes sense
If you're doing away with dice and stats then you're moving away from D&D at that point.
how do i use the cards? like initiative cards and such?
Have you actually read the rules?
What cards?
in the essentials kit it game with cards
A game needs a framework (rules) to work.
D&D requires dice and a character sheet (stats).
Homebrew is just using the rules framework to create custom elements for the game - but still using dice and stats.
i used the link, i dont own any books
oh ok tnx!
so what makes a story "dnd" is the dice and stats, not the universe or the way a story is told?
like half and half i think
The dice and stats are part of the game mechanics.
D&D is a game system - the game rules provide the framework and mechanics for playing and telling a story collaboratively with a group of players and the DM.
think of DnD as a game engine, and homebrew is modding the game to include things it didn't before as options. you largely keep the basis of the engine as-is. the basis here being stats and rolling dice.
that basis and the rest of the rules provide a framework for the storytelling
Again, have you read the rules?
alright thanks!
did you read the rules? they answer alot of questions
generally i was more interested in lore and worldbuilding, not the table top and gameplay side
Ah. In that case check your local book stores for D&D novels - they will be more up your alley. Also D&D 5e is making an effort to separate the old (and often hurtful) lore from the actual game.
But further lore questions can be asked in #dnd-lore
You could also just visit wikis for the various D&D settings: Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Greyhawk, Mystara, Dark Sun, Spelljammer, Ravenloft, and Dragonlance.
In the back of the Player's Handbook there is a list of fantasy novels that can be great inspiration for fantasy lore and worldbuilding
I just got Explorer’s guide to Wildmount and now I’m confused, what is a Dunamancer?
It is a setting specific wizard subclass that practices the magic of dunamancy. It's essentially the ability to arcanely tap into parallel universes for a variety of magical effects
Is it in this book?
I just see spells.
i believe it's separated between chronurgy and graviturgy wizard
Are you messing with me?
My appologies, Cesario is right. Dunemancy is split between chronomancy (time manipulation) and graviturgy (gravity). You can read more on the specifics here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/egtw/character-options-subclasses#Wizard
It’s explained in general at the start of the Subclasses section.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/egtw/character-options-subclasses#DunamisandDunamancy
Ok.
Mages who pursue the study of this strange and complex force call themselves dunamancers, and their interest in learning to alter the fabric of gravity, potential, and time often coincides with a hunger to understand the oldest mysteries of the cosmos.
Which subclasses are in the Swordcoast book?

Hello!!
Hi!
i am quite new to the game and wondering if there are any "real" summon spells below character level 5 /spell level 3 when conjure animals comes online. I read there are some spells like find familiar and so, but find familiar isn't really a summon with hp, ac and attack rolls as far as i gather. So are there any other real summon spells before conjure animals?
Warlock pact of the chain + investment of the chain master for bound action familiar attack
New beast master ranger has bonus action companion attack
Wildfire Druid gets a wildfire spirit to command as a bonus action
My first character was a bard and I do not recommend that to beginners
because as a bard you can't experiment and change your spells
It was not bad for me as well
but it's very hard to experiment with the bard as a new player
Sometimes experimenting isn’t the goal for some. It’s to find out how a class works.
To find out how a class works all you need to do is read their features
Ehhhhh it can give you a good idea, but not all features are used equally in a given game.
that depends on your playstyle
different players might use different stuff
I’m contesting that “all you need to do” isn’t just reading the class features. For some it doesn’t click until it’s actually played.
There’s lots of stuff in there that heavily depends on its interaction with others at the table and the DM who is running the world.
The problem I had with the bard was that I chose spells which I initially thought were good and matched my playstyle but in the game they did not
I only used specific spells and didn't know how to use well the others
even though I talked with my dm and he allowed me to choose new spells
If I would choose a cleric instead, choosing the spells that I like would not be a struggle
That makes sense. Classes with only a few known spells make you commit to options you may not have a good handle on
can't find a "player looking group" ,it's either no text,or timezone doesn't work,mainly the 1st one
You just have to keep looking

Never gonna regret it

Yeah DnD is that old
But still fun and I'd say even with the inclusion of the "electronic era" just made dnd more popular
More advertisements more accessibility and more ways to play
my dad played dnd too, he was a DM !!
Hey uhm... i'm searching a group to join in and play with! Anyone avilable to take me in?

Ty!
Quick question, what are westmarches?
It's a style of 'drop in, drop out' play where a group of DMs and players all kinda hotswap based on availability
So rather than playing with the same group each week, you'll log on to the server and see who's free to run something
Ah, that makes sense, thank you

Hi everyone.
Hello everyone i am new to the whole dnd thing and I am going to have a couple of friends over soon to play dnd for the first time I am going to play DM does anyone have any tips?
Hello. A while ago my discord got hacked and I lost a lot of my contacts. I managed to find most of my friends again. But one is still missing, I was doing a 1 on 1 campaign with him and it was really fun. So if anyone happens to recognise the character name Isabelle Troyes or Imuranla Onilu. Send them my way.
Hi everyone, I'm new here👋
I think if you google "new DM tips", you'll get some of the generic things folks here can offer. Stuff like:
- If nobody knows a rule, make a judgement call and keep going. You can always look it up later.
- Let your players have space to make decisions, but don't be afraid to try to prod them forward if they seem stuck.
Stuff like that.
Is there something(s) in particular you're worried about, though? If so, folks can give you much more specific thoughts! ✌️
Very excited to stumble into the community, can't wait to get involved and join my first online DND session.
Hello all. I am looking to join an online game this weekend. Any suggestions? I am a newb and need a beginner game.
Hey, I'm completley new on DND, and I am looking for someone who could help me make a character, since I don't know anything about it.
Looking foward to my first session. :)

Im watching that handboore helper and what do i do if i dont have a character sheet and where can i find one
You can create one for free here on D&D Beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Ok
I just started and i want a more experienced view on this character https://ddb.ac/characters/92572352/8icPDB
Well right off the bat, you normally can't have stats over 20, especially at level 1 😛
Oh okay thanks for telling me! 👍
Also 10 ft. movement speed is really low, basically all the races have 30 ft. (Thogh I notice that this is a homebrew race)
And your sword attack seems to have a damage of 1d20, which is definitely not something any of the weapons have (Most of them are a d6 or d8, I recommend checking those out)
alr
Your race has no racial traits?
I forgot about that mb
How'd you get a Rare magic item at level 1?
Can someone please help me make a dnd character? I haven't played and I want to but I don't know how.
Hey I’m new to the game and I was wondering on how to join a session and make a character
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I read the rules for the sever.

@cobalt frigate and @stark island thank you.
Don’t forget to equip your weapon(s).
It looks like you missed a couple proficiency choices for your class, too.
I’d head back through the character builder and look for any sections that are highlighted in blue.
What character exactly?
I think you're replying to the wrong person 😛
I’m sorry. Yeah, I did. 😅
Some advice above. ☝🏻
But bringing weapons to a session is a good advice anyways /j 😏
May I ask, why so many weapons in the inventory?
How do I submit a looking for dm form through dyno?
The site said i could choose a weapon like my big axe and two small axes then my backstory gave me another then the javelins were already selected
?looking i assume you click the link? ive never actually done it, so im not sure

Welcome to D&D!
Hello
Hi all! I’m fairly new at this, but if anyone is doing or knows of any upcoming campaigns that would be posted online like YouTube or twitch (since it seems nice to have others listen in and have fun with it) let me know. I’d be interested in joining.
saaame I would like to watch
but if there's a group that needs more players I would be down to join
Check out #looking-for-players
anyone have a good dnd site with a lot of monsters?
couse i wanna start to DM with my friends
Dndbeyond
but i have to play 200zł to unlock one part of them
(or 50dollars)
just for 1 part
Loads of free monster stat blocks find something you like the attacks on and just describ it differently
You can search on the app filtering by sourcebook and the basic rules have over 100 monsters
Oh ok then I'll try
Honestly I prefer the irl sessions, I'm new but it kind of makes me happier
Those are rare these days
y’all imma new player and if i were to join a campaign and wasn’t given a premade character how would making one work or would it be a case by case basis?
ik how to get stats and i’d wanna roll for them cus i like the chance of it but i don’t understand how skills and the components work depending on my class
It is case-by-case as different DMs have different creation methods, ask your DM what method they want you to use. Once you have an answer we can help more easily.
Have you started with the step-by-step character creation rules?
i haven’t looked at the rules much i was planning to today i just decided to get into dnd recently
Many of the classes also have a “quick build” at the beginning to give you an idea of what skills and stats you should focus on.
i did watch a couple videos and get the gist of how dnd works just not the specifics
Not the most helpful as not all 5he games use the current system or use it accurately
and there are some homebrewed methods right?
There are, but those require your DM to say what homebrew they’re using.
so it all mainly depends on how the dm wants it to work
Yep, sometimes DMs will have particular methods in mind. Ask them, they'll tell you if they want point buy, standard array, dice rolling, or something else
Generally if you’re practicing character creation assume there’s no homebrew, and use the standard array or point buy for making stats. You can always change them once you find a group, but I know from experience if you bring a sheet to a table with an 18 and mostly positive stats from “getting lucky with rolls” you’ll get a 🤨 from the DM and a request to roll again with them present.
that’s just stats tho ik how those work what i’m more curious about is and excuse me if i’m using the term wrong fleshing out my character
If you want to practice building characters to see how the ability scores affect things, maybe use Standard array for a bit. Rolling is exciting but not all DMs allow it and don't want you to get attached to your 20 ability score on a level 1 because of a lucky roll and not being able to attain that in a game using the other methods.
alright so i’ll experiment with the point buy system
Yep, play around with it but be ready to be flexible if your DM wants something else
oh i’ll always be flexible since imma be thankful to the dm as long as they’re reasonable and semi nice about it
