and saving throw bonuses
HP, even.
The best thing to do as a new player is to sit qith the most experienced person at the table and have them explain these things to you so you dont find out youve been rolling attacks rong halfway into fight 1
It can take a while your first time but with help from an experienced player or your dm it should take 10 minutes with some explaination
Thank you, lastly is there anything I should stay away from when writing my characters backstory?
Here are some of my ideas on that very question from earlier today: #dnd-newcomers message
Depends on you and your dm. I tend to not mention important places, and its good to avoid skills and the like that your characters not proficient in.
When are you playing @white bough how soon
Backstory is definitely a player thing, make them who you want them to be, and unless you know your dm loves to read pages, keep it short
Sometime later this month, we're trying to set aside a coupe evenings per month to play
Open ended backstories allow for better integration
An additional suggestion: have your character be connected somehow—to specific people, locations, organizations. Orphans who have no ties are kind of bland to work with from the DM side.
And maybe your dm has some locations he can point you to for where youre from too
Come up with a rough idea 💡 f who you want your character to be then talk to your DM
This is a huge part of it. Give your character a reason to exist in the world and some flavour for the dm to bring into their campaign to make you feel involved
My mercy monk was a 2 week backstory build between my dm and i. Some dms would prefer shorter, but will still like to be involved so they can fit you in well
Got it, thanks everyone. Pretty keen to start playing soon!
Have fun! Dnd is a for fun adventure, so make sure to let go a little and get into it ❤️
As both a player and a DM, I like a good swiss cheese backstory.
Enough to explain where the character’s coming from at the start.
But it doesn’t explain anything that doesn’t need an immediate explanation.
It leaves a couple holes so we can tie it into the story itself.
Hello!Happy new year!Today i finally buy Dungeons and dragons wrath of ashardalon.I'm newbie 🙂
@regal ruin Wrath of Ashardalon is actually a board game and not the D&D roleplaying game
So I’m going to be playing my first actual Druid and I’m curious what’s a good Phb race for star Druid
Any really depends on how you want to play. You can put your racial ASI bonuses where you want now
What race speaks to you for your star gazing Druid are you just a human or maybe a dwarf who sat on a mountain staring at the stars for inspiration,
Nothing wrong with playing a human though
I think human sage background should work with what I want to do
👍 normal human or variant?
Normal
The Dm limited us to Phb races with it being most of our first actual campaign
Variant is in the PHB you just get a feat at level 1
And what would be a good feet for a variant human star Druid
Theres a ton of feats, some to look at are alert, telekenetic, or any feat you think fits your flavour and may supply a usable bonus
There are a number of good feats you can take but a handful of them like warcaster come into effect later than others
Any recommendations for cool barbarian videos on YouTube? Just looking for inspiration, creating my first character.
https://youtu.be/Mie4FH4ZcDQ dungeon dudes have some good ones
@worldly surge so what type of Paladin are you playing?
Like what is the fantasy/build behind it
well, the world is a dark fantasy, and I'm planning to focuse a bit more on offense
like, if he could be a step away from being a zealot barbarian instead of paladin
You have the choice between:
- Defense (+1 AC if you wear armor)
- Dueling (+2 if you use a weapon one-handed and don't have one in the off-hand)
- Great Weapon Fighting (reroll damage dice on a 1 or 2 if you use a weapon two-handed)
- Protection (give an attack to an adjecant character disadvantage)
in the phb and if you have Tashas - Blind Fighting (blindsight 10 feet (you notice everything in that area even if you are blinded/total darkness))
- Blessed Warrior (gain two cleric cantrips)
- Interception (similar to protection, but instead of disadvantage reduce the damage of an attack to an adjecant target)
So @worldly surge with what you told me
- Dueling if you are a sword and board paladin
- Great Weapon Fighting if you use a two-handed weapon
- Blind Fighting is always good (but ask your GM as blindsight is good the rogue only gets that ability way later)
- Blessed Warrior if you want to add some cantrips to your offensive options
alright, blessed warrior for me

Hey y'all. I just finished my first character sheet and I'm at the stage where I'm starting to look for a group. If I'm using the D&D Beyond character builder, does that mean I'm looking for a 5e group? What is the correct terminology for me to communicate that I'm looking for a vanilla game that allows me to focus on learning how to play?
Yes - DnDBeyond only supports 5th edition D&D
You can also just check for games posted in #looking-for-players - this is where DM's are looking for players for their games. You can direct-message the poster of leave a message in the attached thread to their game posting.
Okay thanks! Just wanted to make sure I know how to volunteer for the right thing 😄
I've been looking at a ton in there but they seem to be either past midnight for me, full, or not beginner friendly
feels like I can't find a game
If you're not having luck searching here, you might expand your search.
looked in 4 or 5 servers so far.. no luck
Most groups are fine taking on new players if you show that you're trying to learn the rules, make an effort to continue to learn, and just get along well with the group.
I meant that some explicitly state they want experienced players
Maybe try MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
I guess I could try reddit, although dunno how well that'll turn out
I noticed that too. That's why I was looking at the D&D Beyond message board and wanted to make sure I don't get myself into a sticky situation.
uh oh.. the dnd lfg gets like one post every few days
I'm not sure of your approach, either, but if you're posting and waiting to be contacted, you may get more traction by proactively reaching out.
You might also try the #looking-for-community which is often Discord servers that may offer play-by-post type games that may work better for your schedule.
the reaching out I've done so far is just scouring games looking for players across 5 servers or so
There are several game stores near me that host games. I was going to try reaching out to them to see what happens.
Nice
the posts on lfg are mostly in est too.. gah
RIP uk dnd players, can't catch a break
Can also use https://locator.wizards.com/?searchType=dnd# to try and find a local game near you
Oh I can't really go to physical locations for physical games for personal reasons
I'm online only for the time being
oo I think I finally found a game I can play, 7pm-10pm in my timezone, finally one that isn't past midnight
Yeah you might want to also search for play by post games - they are a bit harder to find and tend to be a bit slower in pace compared to other kinds of D&D games but it sounds like they would fit you game needs and schedule better.
I can try
aaaand the one I found has really restrictive character creation, damnit
Why is that an issue?
I like a lot of the creative aspect
The DM and group may want to tell a particular story where it makes sense to have the character races locked down.
Yeah just means it isn't one for me
It might be. You can always ask.
I mean the creativity aspect is half of why I even want to play in the first place..
If you're open to play-by-post, you can also search Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and r/pbp.
They do it by form and the form has only preset options to pick
Could I get some more info on what a play by post game is?
You play via text: no real-time voice.
Oh.. then that'd also be a no go for me
the personal aspect is a good chunk of the fun
thiiis is hard
Just out of curiosity, what servers have you checked out besides this one?
I don't remember most of their names tbh
only one I'm still in is heroes and zeroes
You should probably visit some of the larger D&D Discords. A bigger pool may have better odds of you finding something that'll fit your parameters.
I thought this was the biggest..
since it's called.. dungeons and dragons
Aside from here, I mean.
You got any recommendations?
on lfg reddit I'm also just finding games past midnight
Reddit's r/LFG has a public Discord as do many of the D&D YouTubers (including LFG sections).
okay
weird I can't seem to find the lfg discord..
Use Discord's 'search public servers' feature and type 'rlfg.' It should be the first result.
Just wanted to say a big thanks to the newbie team I played with during the morning DnD session, today/08/01/23. Had a blast and felt we were a pretty well balanced team 😄
Would be happy to connect up again for future missions
I do not like the new OGL...
Bring it up in the #1027282690547929240 like everyone else.
my bad looks like i was in wrong channel thank you

I joined Altrole to learn how to play. Their class tomorrow is on spells. The character I just made is a lvl 1 dwarf ranger. While something like Beast Bond or Speak with Animals would be consistent with my backstory, Hunter's Mark or Cure Wounds seem like they would be really useful. Thoughts on what would be more useful to a newbie playing a Ranger for the first time?
im basicly looking for a group that would be willing to take me in and help me. i learn best when actively doing/playing reading rules wont help me as much if i dont know to what exactly they apply. basicly i had a life coach who started to teach me dnd and then never saw him again
If this is just for the purposes of learning, then it kind of doesn't matter what you pick as it's not for an actual play scenario. You can make those decisions in the context of a group ("Oh, we need healing? I can take X spell then.").

That said, healing and extra damage are almost sure to be used, so if you wanna understand some fundamental aspects of the game, Hunter's Mark and Cure Wounds would be solid picks.
Do the spells build on each other? Like are they prerequisite to the spells you learn at other levels?
No, spells don't work that way in D&D.
I just mean that if you understand how a spell like Hunter's Mark or Cure Wounds works, you can apply that knowledge to similar spells.
Right. That's why they seem more practical. I'd be using them more often than situational spells where how useful they are depends on the campaign.
Yep, so that'd be my gentle recommendation. But as above, I don't think it matters what you choose in a non-game environment, ultimately. It's all with the end goal of getting you more familiar, so it's a win however you choose to proceed.
I definitely want to take her into a campaign if I can. Thanks for answering!
Hey all I am completely new to DND but love everything about it. If anyone would like to help me figure things out and take me under their wing that would be lovely hope yall have a good day ❤️

I looked in my city there is one about 3 hours from my house
But rn i can't go that far lmao
Lemme know if you find one i can join lmao
Great idea tbh
Will do lol
I am sorry
40 or 41 years (I can't recall the exact year)
Almost 30 for me
since 1979 on and off. mostly off. AD&D, some 2E, having fun learning 5e
I started in 2E
Same. Been playing for 27 years.
THACO!!
Hopefully you find a group you’re comfortable with and have a great time learning the hobby. I loved learning to play.
Did you check in the #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356 channels?
Even worse if i never played before
Yes already joined a few trynna find games unsucesfull until now
Ahh
I know for me I would struggle. I’ve started to look in those channels and others, but stop each time due to anxiety. I haven’t been a player in so long that I’d probably struggle giving up the control or just relaxing without overthinking everything lol
Well i hope i can learn whit y all 🙂
In my casa i am very exited but also very scared cuz i probably will make mistakes
Case*
That’s one of the best parts. I just misquoted a rule and I’ve been playing 5e for 6 years. It’s okay.
A lot of people here seem awesome tbh
Yeah that’s one of my limiting factors as well, not much time to schedule a game.
Agreed
Just hoping to give everyone the same great experience I had learning the game.
What about we make a group and i learn whit all of you ahaha
And we find a dm or some
Same here
Lol sure
Depends what platforms y all play tho
I will be honest I’m still new to playing online.
I’ve played roll20, foundry/forge, and discord.
I’ve played some on roll 20
Any of those works on mobile (i have pc if needed too)
Well kind of
Pc is better
Foundry wouldn’t. But you could do DDB and your rolls will go to those servers.
Yeah I always forget owlbear
Roll20 on mobile works?
I’ve also seen it streamed over discord with rolls on DDB
It could
Not very well (from when I used it last), but they have been developing the app
I dont mind playing on pc but for me mobile its way easier but if itd easier to everyone i dont mind
Just checked it out. Looks like roll20’s app is still very basic (a mini version of the site/copy of DDB’s character access). No way of seeing the actual VTT.
What is VTT?
Virtual tabletop.
Hmm
I didn’t try to visit the mobile site, but remember having slightly better luck on a tablet than on a phone.
Well i hope my pc comes back by sunday at least then
I will try to get my pc by then y all mind if it diesnt come in time i play on tablet? Or phone

Thank you
I’m watching critical role campaign 3 right now lol
I’m on my last attempt to get into the show. Never made it beyond the 10th episode of the first season.
The first campaign is a little hard to follow. Try campaign 2
You can watch that one from the beginning
Yeah, I keep hearing that if I muscle my way through episode 27(?) it gets better.
Agreed
Just added it to my podcast list.
Adventure they wrote is another good podcast it’s noir themed
Just started listening to NADDP while taking a break from TAZ.
dimension 20 is a bit more digestible though, since it's significantly shorter than critical role
That’s been one of the harder things to get into-sometimes I leave off halfway through and don’t remember where I’m at for a moment.
not sure if d20 is free though. you might have to get a pass or smth?
That’s what I read somewhere
NADDPOD their awesome
On my app I see enough to get started at least
Podcasts help the idle time on the planes to go by faster (and the long drives)-and of course working on my campaigns/adventures. I mean, it’s either that or do actual work.
AGREED!!! LMAO
might get a bit stale at times though. is that just me?
A specific show or podcasts in general?
dnd podcasts, especially if they're too long
Yeah I do enjoy the shorter episodes typically. I do sometimes have to step away from them in favor of something else to mix it up. But I do like the inspiration that some of the shows have provided me while writing my own material.
I do when I’m at my desk. When I travel, I will while en route and sometimes when I workout.
It’s a him
who is he?
On Spotify their is a gentleman that reads his series of books
Drizzt the dark elf? Like the Salvatore books?
The guys name is Russell Johnson
I grew up with them. Great series. Likely what propelled WoTC to settle on Forgotten Realms as their default setting for 5e.
I like dragonlance
Me too. I started with Dragonlance before shifting to Forgotten Realms. They were the first fantasy books I read.
My partner got me Dragons of Autumn Twilight and Sword of Shannara as a birthday gift to re-read and it brought a lot of memories back.
Have you looked at the new book?
Not in a long time
I picked up the new 5e adventure, but haven’t had a chance to get Dragons of Deceit yet.
I have the core books physically, but just caved and started buying bundles to get digital copies. The layout of information has taken me a bit to get used to.
I love having the hardcovers
They keep mentioning this handbook Where is it? I can’t find it.

Or that
Is most of the community Voiced based? If so,it’s not looking good for me since I preferred text
D&D started as a "play around a table with real people" game so yeah, voice is still dominant. That said there are play by post games (PBP) that are text only.
a lot of the community is voice based, but you should be able to find text based games easily
I am actually planning to join The United We Stand community, I asked some questions and is waiting for answer rn, The one posted the post isn’t answering my question yet
A community name
Hello everyone
Hi
Can anyone give me a hand with something?
Hi
Hi
I still prefer play around the table with a bunch of people, if you must know. But if I'm in voice, I prefer to know at least one person in the digital group.
I agree with you. I love to play around a table
Nothing like looking at the DMs gave when he or she rolls a 1 on what is going to happen to me. Like oh no, this isn't going to be good, lol.
Me I’d prefer in person idk why but in a way it’s better
what is it?
Right
Hey hey in all fairness, you want the DM to roll a 1
In my experience, 1 is the best thing to roll in a random encounter table (for the players)
You DON’T wanna see a 20
Lol
Well, okay, running 2nd edition, 1991 then fiance made a wish dm rolled a 1. Ha ha ha. I loved it. But yeah, it was probably a bad thing in another player.
I’d have the player roll for that but yeah true

Alright
But what do I need to buy to be ready
Oh and how many people are needed
Dice, pen, paper, character sheet (use dnd beyond imo), token to represent your character (you can use a dice). Generally a table consists of a DM and 3-7 players.
Alright what is the use of the paper
Kk
With sessions going for multiple hours there is a lot of talking going on and a lot of information being divulged. Having some paper handy lets you take notes so you remember what that NPCs name was, where you're going, what flavor sandwhiches ol' granny munchkin packed the party etc.
Agreed
Ok, I’m relatively new to dnd, only played a few one shots and 1or2 campaigns, and I’d like to ask, what is the value of gold pieces? I’m not exactly sure
Good question. You can buy equipment, armour and weapons from the phb. Also, some spells require a specific item as part of the casting (most commonly a diamond for raising dead allies). They can also be used to buy magic items.
What is the best website (that's affordable) to buy D&D beginner stuff?
What kind of stuff did you have in mind?
Like dice, books, character sheets? What kinds of things are you needing
Book, Character Sheets and some fun clothing.
Oh idk about clothing that’s more the cosplay aspect. My girlfriend can sometimes find fun things at second hand stores ( like goodwill in the US) and there are also places that out right make and sell cosplay
For character sheets you can just print those off if you have a printer or go to your local book store or comic place and they’ll have them in packs that come with tons for relatively cheap.
For books you can also check out places like book or comic stores or you can look at common places like EBay, Amazon, maybe even some secondhand book stores since those are things you’re actually able to buy secondhand since they’re not digital
If you want digital copies for dnd beyond you’ll have to just pay retail or wait till one of their semi regular sales
Hey guys newer to DND and tabletop gaming. We want to make interactive battle maps with more miniatures. Any good websites that I could go to find this type of thing?
Not located in USA
Depends what your looking for, wizkids do some nice minis, warhammer age of sigmar is good for getting lots of minis, or 3D printing
Terraincraft is a whole thing. Tons of info on crafting terrain on the internet. Look at Youtube.
Do they have a website to purchase items?
We currently use a virtual board (I found a DIY project online which we use a TV as the board) but it doesn’t give the same effect as using actual miniatures for the environment
hello friends 🙂
I'm not new to pen and paper rpgs, but quite new to DnD now.
As I'm not a native speaker, I'm having a hard time to find me the right product informations.
As far as I understand it, there is a official not-homebrew lore world of DnD (like seen in videogames like baldurs gate). Are there any dnd 5e sourcebooks about it? if so, which ones are they? or is the information spread through all the books?
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with that.
There are some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel on how to get started including playing D&D online
Current 5th edition D&D uses Faerun and the Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms as the main setting. D&D is starting to move away from the concept of official lore due to problematic language and concepts that have caused concern in the community. For more information about the Forgotten Realms see: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Forgotten_Realms
Thank you. 🙂
hiim new to dnd and i really dont know about playing this i played medieval fantasy game but not like this with dice things rules is any of you can recommend how can i start to learn the basics that would be able to learn me to be able to atleast somewhat play , and i need really a basic one to help me learn since i need to learn it for two days since the dnd game that we would be playing is nearing.

Can you stack haste spell and haste potion?
Nope.
Ok
Effects of the same name don’t stack.
It means playing by text, either in a chat client such as discord (synchronous/real time) or a forum (asynchronous)
And yet it doesnt make sense at all
What doesn't make sense?
There's too many factors, variables, and player interaction that's just overwhelming
Coordination is much more difficult
It's basically playing D&D by posting messages for the other players and DM to see
People make it work, it's a very popular style of play
D&D Beyond has an entire subforum dedicated to Play by Post
I know a lot of people that exclusively play by text
You have to take in other character's actions without completely taking over then, and at that point why even bother with the play by post when you can make a storh+
It's absolutely alien and it makes no sense on how the frick it works
Well, it might not be for you and that's valid
I haven't even tried it, and I still don't eve. Get how it works
Because even while reading so many play by posts
It works for other people; you wait until they've posted and factor the description of their actions into what you post
It doesn't make sense at all!
Does it have to?
Do you want people to get banned without a reason than just I want to ban them?
At that point, the Control part is too overwhelming
For example the Play By Post Forums on D&D Beyond are accessible so you can see how they work in a forum environment
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post
Characters become harder as since you want to do something but can't because if you do you are overstepping boundries
Read over 500 of the longest ones
Posts, not comments
I still don't get how it works
I'm not sure what you mean by this. I'm just trying to point out that you don't need to expend energy trying to understand something that doesn't click for you
If you don't think you will enjoy play by post, then don't worry about it and move on. There are more than enough people that still play it the traditional way. You don't have to try to convince all of us to not enjoy it too
And I'm going to expend energy because I have no idea how it works
I don't evenlike it in the traditional way
I would rather play it online, but play by post?
It makes absolutely no sense on how anything works
I'm not going to move on until I understand it
It works like how voice based D&D works; people respond to the actions and descriptions of others. But instead of speaking, they use text
you can still play online and do it over voice channels, if thats what you think you will prefer
And that makes absolute sense to. Me
There's a subtle difference in a way
much like how this is a conversation playing out in text that could play out verbally
True
then find other people that will enjoy that too, and leave people that enjoy PBP to their fun. You don't need to complain about something that doesn't effect you
But would you rather I take control of your character, doing whatever I wanted because I would like for the story to go that long ay?
No, no you wouldn't.
That's one of the reasons play by psots make no srnse
Much like how you are talking here, by text, others would be able to do the same in D&D.
I say a thing, you respond to the thing. We have a conversation.
Now apply the usual dynamic and rules of D&D to it while you’re roleplaying as your preferred character and there you have it.
why would that happen in PBP? No one gets to play your character but you
I'm not sure where you're getting this assumption of taking control from someone else with regards to their character from
Problem is the roleplaying portion though
At this point
Why?
It still. Makes no sense to. Me
you just type what you would say instead of saying it out loud.
You need to say why it makes no sense. What about it makes no sense to you?
Yet it's completely different
...how?
I've already said
It's not much different then playing in person only that you type out what your character does instead of talking
.
This may be the confusion for some reason Megafire seems to think pbp gives players control over other players actions for some reason.
It sounds like someone gave you a bad description of PBP tbh
You can also use formatting (something you can't do in person)
Some people use bold to indicate actions
Or maybe italic to indicate speech
Or underline to indicate game mechanics being described
Yeah you’re still in control of your character and only your character.
Its asynchronous play and not really designed to go as fast as over voice or in person.
I haven't read any besides the Wikipedia, 500 threads/post of pbp, and my own thoughts
For example
Gortath draws his sword
Drop the crossbow or die
I'd like to perform an intimidation check
And that makes no sense considering everything
So why couldn't you also say, the opponent died, he hugged someone else, etc etc
The same reason you can't do that when playing D&D by voice?
Why can’t you say that in an in-person game?
Dialogue and dialogue
The rules don't allow that?
Because if I did I'm going to die
Play by post is still bound by the same rules of D&D
At that point, who cares about the rules because of storytelling?
Yeah, same applies. The rules don’t change in a pbp game. Just the speed at which it happens IRL.
Judt
I am so confused.
Nothing about it makes sensr
Play by post doesn't mean freeform roleplay/collaborative storytelling
No, I'm not
It just means instead of speaking, you type. That's all
At that point, I would just go write a story.
Same could be said of any game of D&D
It would be too hard to not cross another player's boundaries while in text, and not use their charactera while talking
No harder than voice
Much harder than voice.
I would suggest you maybe you step away, do some more research on how PBP games work
I play exclusively play by post for over 3 years now. The problems you see I have never encountered while actually playing
I've done so. Much research on it
Including my other research things
I mean, if I were to pretend I were Davyd and start impersonating him my comments would be deleted and I’d likely be warned.
If one of my players started impersonating another their comments would be deleted and they would be warned.
A lot of people here have explained it very exhaustively, including trying to clarify some misconceptions you ghave
A year already
And they don't make sense
It causes even more confusion and questions to rise.
That's unfortunate, but at this point this matter is monopolising the channel, so let's move on
And I don't want to move on because I still am confused.
Well you are being told to move on by a moderator
If I attack a troll with fire does it regenerate on its next turn? Asking for a friend
Regeneration. The troll regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the troll takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the troll's next turn. The troll dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
RAW, no but your DM might be using homebrew fire-proof trolls
"Terraincraft" isn't a company, it's the act of crafting terrain.
hey, im new to dnd but i have a few books (tashas phb and Xanathar's) and was wondering if i had to buy these books again to use them in dnd beyond?
?books
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Hope that helps?
so i cant use my phisical books in dnd beyond i have to buy them again?
Correct; the book was likely printed before D&D Beyond even existed, let alone before DDB was acquired by Wizards of the Coast, and won't feature any unique identifier to verify you actually own it
So far only the special edition of the 5E Dragonlance (physical) book that you order directly from WotC has a code for the digital version on D&D Beyond.
does dnd beyond have tools to hombrew copy classes?
yes
Yes you can homebrew classes, monsters, spells, and races.
all the official subclasses on the website are made with the homebrew tools that you can also use. Fair warning. those tools arent exactly intuitive to use
where is to tools for adding classes because all i see that im able to makeare sublcasses not classes
yeah you cant homebrew classes atm
I kinda assumed you were asking about subclasses, sorry
its pretty rare people want to add homebrew classes on ddb
yea artificer isnt one of the default options
If you don't want to rebuy an entire book you can just buy the playable races/classes individually for about $2 each.
you could buy a single artificer subclass and homebrew the others
or just buy the options you want
or about $10 for a bundle
you can do that?
if you purchase any of the artificer subclasses, it will include the base class description as well
Yes. I own almost all of the physical 5E books. I've only bought the playable races/classes instead of the entire digital books so my players have access to them.
You go to the Marketplace and click on the book, such as Tasha's, to see the list of individual items you can buy.
yeah subclasses, monsters, spells, items, backgrounds, feats etc can all be purchased individually or as bundles on DDB, and the purchase is given as price reduction for the full book should you want to buy it later
ok so on tashas it says i can buy the sublclasses for artificer and theres no option tp buy the class itself so if i buy the subclass the main class comes to
correct
yep
thanks for the help
Hey guys, do you think can I play dnd with B2/C1 english? I can't find a game in my native language so
I'm trying to learn D&D by reading the PHB and DMG before I even apply to any games. Should I also read Tashas? It seems like that changed the meta of the game quite a bit with the customizable origins rules
yeah you should be fine.
it doesnt hurt if you are motivated to do so. you dont have to read all of it to get the gist of it.
If you're just a player (and not a DM), don't bother with the DMG. Even as a new DM, worry about what's in the PHB first.
well, whether I'm a DM or not depends on if I'll need to resort to being one just to get started 😛 A lot of the /r/LFG and Roll20 posts looking for players don't seem friendly to people who have never played the game before
even though Roll20 has an "Accepting new players" filter
but yeah, preparing myself for the possibility that I'll need to be a DM just to find a group. So many #750812887697588356 posts unanswered...
Reading through the PHB and getting confused about how leveling up works. So at certain levels, you could increase your CON modifier, which increases your HP by some amount (the first paragraph), but you'd also gain an additional hit die, add the new(?) CON modifier to it, then increase your HP again (the second paragraph)?
These two paragraphs on PHB p. 15:
Each time you gain a leveI, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total to your hit point maximum. Alternatively, you can use the fixed value shown in your class entry, which is the average result of the die roll (rounded up).
When your Constitution modifier increases by 1, your hit point maximum increases by 1 for each level you have attained. For example, when Bruenor reaches 8th level as a fighter, he increases his Constitution score from 17 to 18, thus increasing his Constitution modifier from +3 to +4. His hit point maximum then increases by 8.
If your Con modifier increases, such as from ASI (Ability Score Improvement) then you gain the additional hp retroactive.
What don't you get with the example in the second paragraph?
The text is written in one order but executed in reverse in the example
so I wasn't sure if the order of operations matters or not
I brand new to dnd and looking for someone who wants to teach me

basically, if I go from top down, then it makes it seem like I can increase my HP twice (once by getting an additional hit die and again by increasing CON)
He reaches level 8, where he uses his ASI to increase his Con score from 17 to 18, thus increase the Con modifier from +3 to +4.
As a result, he retroactively gets +7 additional hp (for levels 1 to 7) on top of the 1 HD and +4 from his Con modifier at level 8.
Not trying to get too in the weeds, but how picky do DMs tend to be with race/class combos when creating a character? Like, would a variant human bard be more welcome than, say, a standard human monk?
and if so, are there any good resources that discuss the pros and cons of each class and race
Really depends on the DM. Personally I have no issues with that
really does depend on the dm but unless there's a lore reason for a race or class to not be accepted or the party is exclusively martials and the dungeon master will cry if there's no one who has access to healing spells (it's me i'm the dungeon master) you should be fine
for me the want for a person with healing spells is mostly because in the game im gonna run half the party is new so
cool. I just wasn't sure if there's an accepted meta to the game that can dictate party composition (similar to computer RPGs)
Recent design decisions are moving away from races have fixed ability score increases, instead giving players the choice of the initial ability score increases, so each races can play well as any class (assuming again your DM allows for that)
Personally I am the sort of DM who lets my party play the race and class combos they want to
is that in Tasha's? still trying to figure out how necessary knowing that material is for playing or if a lot of people still just play vanilla 5e
Yes that rule first appears in Tasha's, but the player races released since have all followed that design style like those found in Monsters of the Multiverse
but DMs are usually fine with players who haven't read/don't know the new material in those books?
I doubt most of my players even know those books exist if I am honest. I'm the painfully online DM 😉
But they have access if they want to browse them through my content sharing. As a new player, I think you should be grand with just understanding the Basic rules (which are in the pinned messages here).
Any further reading beyond those is completely up to you and your interests 🙂
yeah, I guess I'm just experiencing some anxiety about applying to games in #looking-for-players and being rejected because 1) have never played before and 2) the DM is running something other than vanilla 5e (i.e., using rules outside the PHB)
normally I'd look for local games but none of the stores in my area seem to be listed on the Adventurers League website
Everything you need to know as a player is in the PHB or Basic Rules. The stuff in Tasha's and Xanathar's are extensions which are mostly for the DM on the rules side, or more spells and subclasses which you don't need to worry about not knowing
Worth seeing if there is a group on meetup on your area. AL is a special type of D&D and there may be social meetups for D&D who play but not in that style
there is a local meetup group but not very active (or not easily accessible to me, it covers a pretty wide area)
I actually have played, once. At PAXU last month where the Learn D&D session I was in had 8 players at the table LOL
the poor DM forgot my turn in initiative because there were 3x of whatever class I played (I can't even remember)
needless to say, not the best introduction to the game and why I'm being insistent on reading a lot of the source books first before having another go at it
Chase your bliss. Feel free to ask any questions you might have, but heads up that #dnd-discussion might be a slightly better place for them as you leave the basics behind 🙂

Hi?
hello :)
I'm looking for a DND group
are you a player or a dm?
Player
u can find a group in either #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
hello idk if theres a specific channel for this but i wanna get into dming so i can introduce irls into d&d however idk where to start or what to buy for a session
i was wondering if anyone has campaigns they reccomend thats easy to follow
o
ive played water deep as a player so im a bit familiar
Does the Essentials Kit still have the D&D Beyond codes?
What are some use cases for the rock gnome's tinker ability? I can see fire starter being very useful, clockwork toy and music box not so much
lmk if this is better for another channel, I just figured any questions I had that come directly from the PHB would belong here
Flavor more than anything, though potentially it could be handy as a distraction or a small gift in a roleplay scenario.
Impromptu business cards for your downtime clockwork toy shop
Sup all I’m off work now
So does anyone know a good US community to join in to play ?
Please @ me so I see it
That goes for all things
Have you checked #looking-for-community?
Yes, there is a lot of good looking communities but none that I seen. Unless I missed it
It just hard for me cause of my job to find a group that plays on Sunday.
I work 10 hour days sometimes 6 days a week
Hey, all.
I've just got into tabletop RPGs (with the hope to set up a Discord server and get a group together).

hi everyone! I just got the starter set (stormwreck isle) to play with my SO (1 DM + 1 player), I'm still reading the DM guide but I came accross something I don't understand: when in combat, i.e. with a zombie i don't get what should be rolled to calc the zombie's damage. The actions for the stormwreck isle zombie is: Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to h it, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 ( 1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage.
So, when the zombie is in range, what should be rolled and calculated? I should roll a d6 4 times, add a 1 to each time, add all numbers up and that's the total damage?
Either 4 damage or you can roll 1d6+1
You roll a d20 and add 3 to the result for each zombie's attack to see if they hit the target (AC or higher on the number). If an attack hits you then roll either 1d6+1 or do a flat 4 damage depending on your preference
yeah, I got that the +3 was added to the d20 roll to check if the hit landed or not, but the text after the Hit was hard to understand. thanks! Is this standard across enemy sheets? i.e. a hit with # ( dice roll + flat dmg) is always read as ''either deal # damage or (dice roll + flat damage)?
Yes that's pretty standard design language the # damage is the average of the roll
So 8d6 would have an average damage of 28
4 is the average of 1d6+1
I need a GM. Where do I go to make a character?
Here are the steps to follow: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters

Roll20 is a decent free virtual tabletop, but it has a learning curve all on its own. If you’re a player and don’t have a set game, you don’t need to do much beyond learn HOW to create a character and the general thrust of the rules.

Ty
Hey, is there any schedule on using the D&D Game rooms or is it just who takes it first?
I think it’s just whoever gets there first. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong!
You are not wrong, although if you want to make sure a room is free, you can ask the moderation team first
Hi I am very new to the D&D scene and have only played one session ever. I don't know how to join online sessions and I definitely need a refresher on how to play since it's been roughly two years.
I will always recommend searching for "adventurers league" games near you. They're a good way to get into DnD if you can't get a group together. Otherwise check out this

which would you reccomend I chose? looking for DM looks good
Yeah that's what you want. The reality is there are more DMs than players so I'd recommend looking in lots of places for games to join
Okay thank you so much
Hello. I’m also new. Completely new, in fact. I’m looking for more online games, since, it’s difficult for me to get to places.
Didn’t there used to be a dnd academy channel?
Thanks. I’ll definitely try to
we have #dm-discussion - you can find all the channels via the channels and roles feature up near the server image/header.
Do I have to use one of the starter/essentials kit adventures if I do though? I'm also someone who has never played and am open to just DMing if it gets me game time
You don't *have *to do anything. The starter kit and adventure therein is the most straightforward for a new DM but you could go and buy any of the other hardcover adventures if you felt like their themes are more your style
I guess after reading a number of articles about not railroading players, the starter kit feels like it does a lot of that 😂
For new players, sometimes having a more structured tale can help them focus on learning the game mechanics rather than deal with decision paralysis.
Railroad shmailroad, don't feel bad about running a linear adventure. Just because the start and end points are predefined, doesn't mean there won't be the freedom to choose how to get there
Send it I’ll see if I can help
We have #1045166392174972938 for more focused discussions on characters
Lol yeah I was worried that would happen as soon as I sent you here
Derp. But I think they want help with the technical creation not a discussion about personality and background
No worries! It's a big place but the mods would like things to stay relatively on topic and in the right channels
So maybe this place still works?
Sounds good! Send it to character discussion and I’ll jump there to help!
Recommend you send it to #1045166392174972938
Sorry lol
It’s not letting me send photos anywhere…
In the PHB, I see when you level up, you have the option of taking an average roll rather than risking rolling something low, e.g., for barbarian adding 7 + CON instead of 1d12 + CON. How often do players use the average rather than the extra Hit Die you gain?
I think it really depends on the player and how lenient the DM with rolls.
@desert locust oh, since you're here, should basic questions about the PHB go here or #dnd-rules
I have used the average and rolled, I am partial to the chance of the dice but that is just me.
We can take it to #dnd-rules if you want to discuss it more.
oh I don't have anything further. But as I'm reading through the PHB, I just wasn't sure if questions arising from that would belong in this channel or not
Just here to help newer players enjoy this wonderful adventure as much as I do. Simple quick questions are fine. In depth discussions need to end up in the #dnd-rules channel.
Anyone got tips on finding an online group? I’ve played dnd in person but my group has been separated and haven’t been able to play at all so I’m more new to the online aspect of dnd and have been craving to play it for a while now

- Be proactive—don't just make a post and expect people to contact you if you're a player; if you're a DM, you'll probably get an influx of requests. Reach out when you see posted ads you're interested in.
- Cast a wide net: we have channels here, but this is far from the only place to search for groups/games.
- Be patient. Finding a group where not just schedules but preferences align takes time and a bit of luck. Try not to get too discouraged by any setbacks you encounter along the way.
How do you post in the looking-for channels, all the messages seem to be from a bot?
Correct - follow the pinned message in the channel and read it extra careful. There are links in that message. Click the appropriate one and then verify your Discord account with Dyno. Then fill out the form Dyno give you. This will create the post in the appropriate channel and then create a thread under that post for folks to respond/ask questions.
The post that's created will be deleted after 7 days and then you can post again in that channel.

I really appreciate it! I will look through these! Thank you for helping me!! I hope you have a great night!
I am sorry to bother you again, but I am in college and see alot of these posts need money to play in campaigns or learn, do you know of any that would be free like just people playing to play or places to learn? If not I understand
Use the #looking-for-players and direct message (or post in the attached thread to a posting) that you're interested in their game. That #looking-for-players is DM's looking to get players for their D&D games.
You are an angel, I really appreciate you! I will look at both these threads, thank you so much!
Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as they show they are willing to learn (check out the free basic rules and kind of learn the basic mechanics), are engaged, and connect well socially with the rest of the group.
I defintly will! Thank you again for your help!
And now I must cast sleep on myself - laters!

sup, im joining a local game shop dnd session with a prebuilt beginner character as I get the feel for the game, and im working on tweaking it. Two things im stuck on- one is that the DM forgot what background they were given (and that box is blank), but they seem to have at least some parts of a background.
the other thing im stuck on is that, unlike the one shot I joined last week, this one doesn’t have descriptions of the abilities? I just have this big list with the names of all the traits and abilities and whatever else my character has.
I really want to be able to participate in this session and I don’t want to hold up the gameplay, how should I prepare this character sheet to do that?
does anyone know of someone or a website that I can go to that is hosting textbased
Home at last
Hello everyone. I am new and would love to find a D&D group.
Looking for a textbased newbie dnd game (playing). Preferably roleplay and puzzle sided so I can understand the rules of the game and stuff
Thanks in advance :D

Hi everyone! I’m brand new to D&D and looking forward to this new world.
Hi! I'm looking to make a character that does fortune telling/card readings. Is there any languages that would fit the theme? (Think divination, astrology, etc.) She already has Common and Elvish, idk what to slap the third one on though and I don't really know the backgrounds of languages that well, or the creatures that typically use them so I'm just wondering if theres anything that could fit out there ^^
Celestial maybe
the angel langauge is Celestial
or Deep Speech (alien language lol)
or Vistani
not really a player langauge but u could ask your DM
welcome
Vistani is just a dialect of common, it's not a 'special' language
wait really?
damn ur smart
i thought it was its own thing lol
Yeah, it's the dialect spoken by the Vistani people, but it's basically a version of common
oh
oooo how about an elemental langauge
i mean dialect
u could do hydromancy or pyromancy etc.
like maybe you look into a bowl of water and chant Aquan (water people) words to make the magic work
wait how does ur fortune telling work mechanically @bronze lake ?
oh i see
is it like real magic or just a magic she/he believes in
like if i was to use nonmagical irl cards as tarot cards
or is it like actual magic tarot cards
Might be worth moving this discussion over to #1045165827068002374. That's our space for discussing character ideas
''Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + Constitution modifier per level after 1st'' so how many would i have at lvl 3? if i take 5 instead of rolling and i have +2 CON
You'd start with 8 + 2 at first level, then 2 * (5 + 2) for the additional levels.
So 24 in total, at level 3.
ty!
Can I be proficient in 4 skills as a 7sorc/2 warlock?
Arcana. Stealth. Deception. Persuasion
You get a minimum of 4 skill proficiencies from your starting class and background
Plus more based on what race and class you pick
According to the PHB, you can customize your background to get whatever skills you want too
I’m a half elf 🙂
So, arcana, persuasion and/or deception from sorc or warlock, and stealth and your last skill from your background
Half elves get to pick any 2 skills of their choice unless you play a variant so you're covered there too
So I can have 5 proficient skills? 😮
6, actually
Thanks for explaining that to me!
2 from sorcerer/warlock, 2 from background and 2 from half-elf
By dipping into warlock I am proficient in medium armor right? Does that include wearing a shield?
Only if you choose the hexblade subclass, otherwise only light
And yes hexblade gives shield proficiency too
I did that. Awesome!
Is playing a cleric for my first campaign a good idea? I rly want to but I’ve heard spell casting is a little complex
Clerics are relatively straightforward spellcasters
They are prepared spell casters and their spell list isn't as complicated as a wizard or druid's list
Spellcasting does have a bit of a learning curve, but with a good teacher (or even a commitment to learning), it’s doable.
So playing cleric for your first PC is totally fine
Thanks!
Cleric would probably be my recommendation for a full-caster to start with.
Same here
Lot of figuring out yeh atm. Never played a caster before. Jumping straight in to the 7 sorc/ 2 warlock
If you choose a bad spell you can just unprepare it the next time you have a long rest
Clerics aren't complex, but you might have to deal with a little bit of choice paralysis. You'll want to know most if not all of the spells on their spell list, since they get to change which ones they have every day, so its good to know all your options
And they get medium/heavy armor and more HP so they're more forgiving if you get caught
The downside to prepared casters is, as above, knowing what spells are available to you and making choices on that basis.
I bought the casting cards for cleric so ill look at all of those
If I am correct, at level 7sorc/2lock I have the following:
7 sorc points
7 cantrips
6 1st lvl slots
3 2nd lvl slots
3 3rd lvl slots
1 4th lvl slot
These slots I need to prepare each long rest right?
But how big is the pool of spells I get to pick from? Right now I have 9 lvl 1 spells that I like
9 lvl 2 spells. 7 lvl 3 spells and 3 lvl 4 spells I like
Can I pick from all these spells each long rest?
Sorcerers and warlocks pick their spells and live with them—no swapping out.
Aha!
(Except on level up, but that’s outside of the basics, I’d say.)
Ah yeh. The soul clock ability or some sorts. That lets me swap out spells
But don’t they act like extra spell slots? Clockwork magic spells?
On top of my standard spell slots?
I’m not familiar. You’re probably better off asking in #1045165827068002374. The folks there have a broad knowledge of the game.
Hey everybody,
I’m looking for some advice on VTT options. I’m relatively new to DMing, having only run a couple games in-person. I have some friends that live far away that are interested in D&D and I thought I’d try to put together an online session with them. Thus, I’ve been embarking down a rabbit hole of VTT options. I’ve never used a VTT, but ideally I’d like something easy to set up and easy to use for the players (who aren’t very computer-savvy to begin with). I purchased Foundry, but honestly it seems a bit cumbersome to set up… there’s all these addons to install and import stuff. I was really hoping for some option that was like “click here to load LMoP module” and have things be relatively easy to use. Are other options easier, like Roll20? Or do I just need to put in the work to learn Foundry?
Will do. Thanks!
Foundry is one of the best VTTs out there, but by dint of all the tools, it can be intimidating. (This is just what I’ve heard.) Roll20 is popular since it’s free and has some customizability, but the learning curve turned me off of it. I prefer Owlbear Rodeo, which is more no-frills than what you want.
If you haven’t seen it, you might check out this Reddit user’s Guide to VTTs (https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/g0vtrn/i_made_a_painstakingly_comprehensive_guide_to/). It’s pretty extensive and should give you plenty of info to chew on.
Did you get your answer? If not, DM me and I will help you with your character and how you should play them.
So, I haven't touched DnD at all and was wondering if there's a way to get a character idea appraised to see if it would be acceptable?
Sure, you can post in #1045165827068002374. But you also shouldn’t let Internet folk dictate what you want to play too much. If it sounds fun, go for it.
Remember that your DM has final say.
Should I purchase the DND Player’s Handbook or wait for One DND? I’m concerned about my purchase becoming obsolete. Also, I heard DND 5.5 is coming soon.
If anyone answers my question, please ping me. I might be away from my phone.
The next iteration of D&D is slated to come out in 2024 (next year), so yes the 5E PHB may be obsolete in a year IF you choose to move over to the new edition.
Remember, there's nothing stopping you from continuing to play 5E.
hey, so i am very very new to D&D and i wanted to join my friend’s campaign this friday but i must make my character sheet first (ofc).
Im doing my Back story and ive chosen a race and a class but i am unsure how to actually build this sheet. we are working off roll 20… idk if anyone would be interested in maybe vcing and helping out, but if so it would be much appreciated in learning
me and some friends are just starting and are looking for a dm to host a game in dnd beyond dm me if you are up to it
I'm fairly new to the game in general, though watching vids is the obvious, what should i do before I join a dnd game.
I’d highly recommend reading the Playing the Game section of the PHB. Your DM will most likely be perfectly willing to guide you along a little though
I would recommend checking out the basic rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That too
@crude musk @brisk hazel you guys are legends, thx!
Heyyyy I’m new to dnd and idk where to get started
A good place to start is reading the base rules and getting a feel for it. Also ask a lot of questions. What are you looking to do? 🙂
Could you explain what you mean when you say what are you looking to do☺️
Welcome! A link to the free basic rules is pinned in this channel, as well as a guide to getting started! Let us know if you have any specific questions
Absolutely! In DnD you can be a player or run a game. Are you interested in just learning about it or looking to join a game?
The pinned posts are a great place to start 😄
I'd check those out first. Also, the people here are lovely and are happy to answer questions if you have them.
Ok thank you
Can paladins use divine smite after a hit of a ranged weapon attack?
is this for new dnd players?
Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage.
They cannot.
Rip
If Monstrosity is an umbrella term for things that don’t fit in the other categories?
What’s the difference between a monstrosity and an aberrition ?
Aberrations are utterly alien beings. Many of them have innate magical abilities drawn from the creature's alien mind rather than the mystical forces of the world. The quintessential aberrations are aboleths, and slaadi.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
Don’t forget beholders.
So just a Monstrosity with magic?
Not necessarily.
In my head, a monstrosity is something unnatural because it was created through artificial means. It was never meant to exist.
Some are the results of magical experimentation gone awry (such as owlbears), and others are the product of terrible curses (including minotaurs).
Ok, cool pfp btw.
Whereas an aberration is only unnatural to us because its natural state is so completely unlike anything we're used to.
I usually use DND beyond but want to set up a roll 20 can't seem to figure out how to add character sheets please help
Makes sense, aberration is basically just an alien.
Take a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJLkMVo28_A
What content is in the PHB that isn't in the Basic Rules document?
looks like at least some spells are in there. Just choosing bard, I noticed college of valor is missing but college of lore is there
Yep. The folks in #dnd-rules have a much more comprehensive knowledge of the contents of various publications if you want a specific breakdown, but I think it's mainly spells, some subclasses, and some rules. Most of it is included in the Basic Rules, though.
Yeah, it’s primarily character options.
And for whatever reason, the fact that cantrips scale based on your character level.
For spells specifically, there’s another 40-50 in the PHB.
Basically all the feats.
reading through these class descriptions is a bit of a slog 😓 Might skip ahead to Part 2 then come back for chapters 4-6
The Basic Rules only contain one subclass for each class, and one subrace / variant for each race that uses those.
also because there are some mechanics referenced in the race and class descriptions that weren't explained fully in chapter 1
But chapters 1, 5, and 7-10 are mostly the same.
oh? I just figured chapter 1 was a brief overview of things but chapters 6-10 expanded on mechanics
what is the best character creation app?
I have the beyond one but it seems alot of the races and all need to be paid for.
unless if it's only default races being used
If you want to make characters anywhere, you need to have access to the content.
The content from the Basic Rules is free, but that only covers some of the options available.
ok
if you use d&d beyond and know someone who has all the races you can have them make a campaign and enable content sharing and make the character from there. that’s what i do for most of my characters
o okay as long as there is a work around
I either have the digital book on D&D Beyond or just bought the playable races for my players to use. You can buy the individual playable races/classes for about $2 each if you don't want to buy the entire digital book.
@elder valve You probably have the wrong channel, this is for the basics

one question. How do I get my friends to learn the rules? They look a lot tbh and I am willing to take some time and memorize them but I don't think most of them are willing to put much effort into it. Is it something you really need to know very very good when you first start or you can play without knowing everything that good?
(bot is down currently)
Will having remind the rules to others be a problem during playthrough?
They should read the rules. It's the only way to play the game properly.
So I'm going to give a counterpoint: I didn't read the rules when I started playing, but my DM did a lot of heavy lifting to help me through. If you're willing to lead your players, yes, they can play, but having them know what rules to read wil likely be better in the long run for all.
You don't need to memorize everything because that's the point of the rule book at your disposal, you can refer to it later.
personally what worked for me was making a character by myself because i learned the rules while trying to make one. then i just read the combat rules.
That's why I suggested above to at least read the first four chapters on character creation.
A good DM will help new players but the players need to help the DM by learning the fundamental rules.
DMs are busy as it is. Be kind to them and learn how the game is run to make their lives easier.
Thanks really helpful. It sounds very fun
People in this channel are happy to answer your questions.
What about adventure modules? Is there a collection I can choose from?
Are you planning to become a DM?
There are plenty of adventures/campaigns to choose from.
Prolly. but not sure
If you have a D&D Beyond account, the Lost Mine of Phandelver is free for everyone with an account. That adventure came with the original 5E Starter Set and was written for new players and DMs in mind.
And there are other official adventures you can run. https://dnd.wizards.com/products?category=tabletop-rpg
The list grows exponentially if you include independent and third-party creators.
Alright. I will check everything out. There are more genres of adventures right? Or is there only the stereotypical style of medieval rpg with races and stuff. I like this style but I would like to have an idea of what exists out there
D&D touches on other genres in a slant-wise way, but its heart is medieval fantasy. For more in-depth treatment of other genres, you're better off playing other games.
D&D is mostly fantasy sword & sorcery. If you want to play other genres like superhero, the occult, cyberpunk, etc then there are other TTRPGs that do a better job with their rulesets.
The Flavours of Fantasy section in chapter 1 of the Dungeon Masters Guide does a good job of summarising the different genres of fantasy:
Heroic, Sword and Sorcery, Epic Fantasy, Mythic Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Intrigue, Mystery, Swashbuckling, War and Wuxia

Ok Grum is in the second discussion
i wanna play but everything seems so complicated, and i can't find a campaign ether; This is a hard game to get into.
Yeah, the hardest part of D&D is getting into it. Just like looking for a job, you need to apply everywhere
what temperature fahrenheit fire would burning hands create
The average damage of burning hands on a failed save is 9.5, so the spell creates enough instantaneous heat to immediately kill a... (searches DDB)... seal. You'd have to ask someone smarter than me about how hot that would be.
This is more of a #dnd-discussion thing if you want to ask over there 🙂
3d6 dmg. I'd say at minimum 2nd degree burn, possibly 3rd.
I disagree, 3d6 will kill a commoner instantly, its much hotter than that
At 118 degrees, human skin can sustain first-degree burns; a second-degree burn injury can occur at a temperature of 131 degrees. Human skin is destroyed when temperatures reach 162 degrees.
just giving a frame of reference.
Thats a good reference, I could believe that burning hands does something along that line
so like ~140 fahrenheit?
im gonna ping you in #dnd-discussion so we can continue this there

Can dragons turn into humans?
Yes some can
Some of them, particularly the metallic dragons, can change forms to look human.
I'm very new to dnd and looking for some tips on how to start
There are some very helpful links on the pinned messages of this channel 🙂
My party consists of a warlock, frontline fighter, druid and ranger(or rogue). What class should I pick to best complete the party? Bard, Wizard, rogue (if 4th player is ranger)?
Rogue and be arcane trickster
Well, that is generally the answer to all lifes questions.
Play the character you want to play, what class do you want to be
What's Inspiration on the character sheet?
Inspiration is a reward your DM can give you under various circumstances. For example roleplaying your character in a way that best reflects their traits
You can spend inspiration before you make an ability check, saving throw, or attack roll to gain advantage on the roll
Does anyone know any free or cheap character creator app for mobile? I don't want to spend on dndbeyond cause it's too expensive for each book, I can spend a little money but not too much cause our group is not rich, were only to F2P players
Hi my name is Anthony, i am looking for a capaign to get me started with DnD i am new, barely getting into on how to play, i have always wanted to play, can anyone direct me to to get started remotly, and get me aclaimated to the rules

If you can't see the pinned message, you likely have disabled Discord embeds (or have an outdated Discord client).
In which case, update Discord and make sure you have enabled Discord embeds.
There is no app that can legally provide all of the character options for free. The paid options have to be purchased or shared with you by someone who owns it.
You can buy individual options on D&D Beyond instead of the whole book for something like $2-$3, though. They’ll even deduct what you’ve bought out of a book from its total cost if you decide to buy it later.
For "The Dragon of Icespire Peak", does it allow any other class than the 5 predetermined ones?
If you have the Players Handbook (or even the free basic rules) you could create your own characters and not use the pregenerated ones.
Theres nothing stopping you, other than the DM.
Ok
You can make a character of any race or class, as long as the DM allows it.
Thanks
I'm fresh and completely new to DnD
Through some finagling of the DnD Beyond site I created a character. But that's about it so far. I also bought a 12 set of dice
Have you checked out the pinned message here in the channel? It has lots of useful links to help get you started.
I have not. Could you point me into the general direction and I'll start walking
Hi. I'm new to DND. Know nothing about it. How do I start looking for a game? Thanks

Do we have to talk here until we gain a level or something to talk in other channels?
No
This channel is just a place for people to feel comfortable asking the basics
If you wanna know what other channels we have and what topics they're for, go check out #channel-guide
#750812887697588356 that is up to the task of helping me(a newbie) train by hosting some ‘one-shots’ for me. Tolerant to autism/adhd brain preferably 😬. Please be patient 😭.
@crimson fulcrum you can include that you're a beginner on your post
@crude musk post? Like the ones in home?
#750812887697588356 is a channel where you can make a post aka write a message using Dyno to fill out a format if you are looking for a game. Alternatively you can browse #looking-for-players for games that might peak uour interest :)
The pinned posts in the very channel you linked #750812887697588356 has a form submission through Dynobot to create a post advertising your desire for a DM and is the most appropriate place to look.
@last blade see, I wanted to do that? But, however.. it didn’t give me the option to I don’t think, it told me to just go to general with an arrow.
Is it obvious that I’ve never been in a large discord server before?
That post has a "this form" link under each, and if you click the correct one it will create a post in the channel the form is for.
@last blade @crude musk thank y’all!!
Which book contains the Aarakocra as a playable character?
I tried to Google my question, but it was confusing.
Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse
Thanks!
can someone teach me to play?
hey guys, im a beginner DM trying to make my first world and campaign to be played with friends of mine who've also never played dnd. I'm looking for someone to teach me the ways of the DM, please.
Depends on how much you want taught and in what kind of time frame.
Have you read the dungeon masters guide and PHB?
I can help you learn how to develop a campaign but i wont sit here and teach you basic rules etc.
Run one of the start sets before making your own world or run a few one shots in your world
I’ll read that soon enough. Thank you, would you mind if I messaged you after I’ve read it and gotten a grasp of the basic rules?
Alright I’ll consider that, thank you
You can message me whenever! I run two sessions, one on Tuesday afternoon and one as a player wednesday nights, and those are the only times im fully unavailable
awesome thank you!
Also i do second running some of the premade stories, theyre mostly pretty good but some are harder than others, it just depends on what kind of world you want
Could I get an Experienced DM's opinion on this character niche I came up with?
We do have #1045165827068002374, but if you wanna share here, go for it.
Oh okay I'll go there then
Nvm discord forums are weird and idk how to operate them. But here's my idea
The only rule I've been made aware of is no side campaigns meaning you can't go off and do your own thing. BUT. My character is a priest or cleric whichever it is. He worships the God of death. He can revive a single fallen Ally. However my character is dead for 3 days as a result. While in hell he does no adventure to revive himself or anything. But rather he does paperwork in hell for the devil. It's like a 9-5 as a consequence for reviving a player. So the campaign still goes on and that's the loophole for no side campaign
What has your DM said about the concept?
Nothing. I don't have one yet that's why I requested a DMs opinion
Is there specific feedback you’re seeking?
what's the best artificer subclass for a Sorcerer? I want to multiclass as an Artificer for my DND campaign
Is the idea dumb or broken and is it allowed
you want #1045165827068002374
Ah. In that case if I were your DM I’d decline it as I don’t typically allow homebrew concepts in my games. The whole revive a pc but be dead for three days would basically knock you out of multiple sessions as long rests don’t come often at my table.
Oh I meant 3 in game days
Yeah. My game has been going on for a few years at this point, but in-game they’ve only been adventuring for a few weeks.
I see
I don’t allow homebrew either, and it sounds kind of tongue-in-cheek (paperwork in Hell), which isn’t the vibe of my games. Whether your DM allows it or not isn’t something anyone else can comment on.
My recommendation would be to stick to the books. You’ll have a much easier time getting concepts approved. Then ask your DM what homebrew they allow and flesh out your ideas from there.
FWIW, there is already a Death Domain subclass for Clerics.
Ah
Every dm is different on homebrew, if they allow some chances are you can work with them to modify a concept you like down to what theyd consider fair
Something you gotta vet with yout dm though
Could someone tell me what is a DC?
Difficulty Class
Difficulty class, the number you need to meet or exceed to succeed in a check.
Dc is the difficulty cpass for skill checks and saving throws
Basically a measure of how hard a task is to complete.
Ohh thanks!
As an example my sorcerer has a dc 15 on spells to disable, so when he casts calm emotions every creature needs to get a 15 or higher to be unaffected
So when you roll an ability check or a saving throw, it’s compared to the DC. If your total is equal to or greater than the DC, you succeed at the task.
I see
You can learn more about DCs here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityChecks
When you try to do something, you roll a twenty-sided die ("d20") and add whatever relevant modifiers your character has to that roll. The total is compared to the task's DC; if the result of your roll meets or beats the DC, you succeed.
(Sorry, just updated that with the free Basic Rules link instead.)
To keep in mind, dcs are usually not revealed to players, dcs cast by a player usually are
When you attack a creature, the DC is the target's Armor Class (AC).
