Well the only four that are important terms of Acronyms which are in my notes includes: DC, AC, CR and HP. What are those again?
Thank you!
So the link that you gave me what are some Acronyms & Abbreviations does the DM and/or expert players sometimes uses for sessions?
https://tabletopbuilds.com/dnd-5e-glossary-of-terms/
this contains some overlap, but also some options that arent on the first site
Thank you!
Is there any more PDF's I should know about which is on the basic Rules, but is there anything else to download?
Sorry if this is obvious but how do you calculate the +2 in a 1d4 + 2?
I don’t get where that number is coming from
you can get the downloadable PDF of the free rules from WoTC https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf.
and is that all? If yes. Thanks.
also you can get for free the Lost mines of phandelver from DnD Beyond
okay
#dnd-newcomers message
You asked this already. That's the modifier bonus (from either Str/Dex)
and yes, all official sites dont offer a PDF
You asked this earlier today and yesterday.
You just have to buy the hard cover, hand player book and other text books correct?
I’m just going over and over it in my mind
You don't need to buy anything for now. The Basic Rules are free and covers most things.
like OldMan said you dont need to buy anything, but if you do the most important one is the player handbook
It’s also nice to have pretty books
the MonsterManual and Dungeon Master Guide is mostly geared towards DMs so if you are a player you dont really need them

From Davyd:
While this channel exists to help newcomers, there comes a point where asking questions that can be more efficiently answered by reading the rules becomes disruptive
I would recommend you read through the various sections of the rules linked above
People have become impatient with me all my life I’m used to it
Oof dude
I've just started playing the game with some friends recently,I'm currently a level 6 halfling bard, does anyone just have any like general advice
have fun, and read your spells before a session, not to know every small detail but so you can quickly select your actions
Thanks!
Does a 10 ft cube mean the area is 10 ft? The perimeter? Or just one side?
10 ft by 10ft
Alright I just needed clarification
Chapter 10 of the Basic Rules and Players Handbook covers Spellcasting. The section titled "Areas Of Effect" explains how the various shapes are defined(cone, cube, etc)

hey how do i start a game im new and so is my friends
i dont understand the rules
i got the starter set
You going to run it?
yeah i assume so
i literally know nothing about the game lmao i just want to get into and so do my friends
Agree with this. At least the first chapter or two, though reading the whole thing to know where it's headed and stuff like that would be helpful.
ive read it and i dont understand what i have to do to start the game
Lost mine of phandelver does a pretty decent job of walking you through what to do as a DM imo
@worthy otter So is your concern along the lines of how to start the story and build interest?
yes
or even how to get a story to use
is it the adventure?
yeah
i got it yesterday
I'm jealous.
i have lost mines of phandelver so ill look at that
@worthy otter Kind of. It's more up to your plot hook and how you kick things off. I think Mines of Phandelver has built in plot hooks at the beginning that you can look into.
okay thanks for the advice im gonna look into the book
@worthy otter Read the starter set stuff, fyi, it's also available for free on dndbeyond.com (official dnd digital things)
LMOP is actually how my buddies and I got into DND a few years back. Get a decent handle on the story but don't stress too much about the rules right away. Talk to your players and see what content they're most interested in (Social Encounters, Loot, Combat, Puzzles Etc.) and go from there. You'll have a blast I'm sure.
im new to dnd in general and i want to try it so if someone can help me it will be appreciated
@stuck geyser Anything you need, I'd be happy to help.
I'm looking at LMoP now, it gets right into it after the intro section, tells you what to say/read aloud, etc. I forgot the first encounter in that module is deadly af
Do you have any source material at all? @stuck geyser
no @wide parcel
@stuck geyser So first I'd set up a free account on DND beyond. I think they have the basic rules for free. Are you more interested in playing or being a DM?
@stuck geyser Awesome! I'm sorry, bud I'm not somewhere quiet where i'd be able to here you.
@pseudo frost thanks 🙏🏻 for the rules and @wide parcel oh
@wide parcel i can still message you
@stuck geyser Absolutely. Message me and I'll help you out as much as possible.
ok
i need help im making a character in dnd beyond and i need help for my stats
What is your question specifically?
i never played so i don’t know what is good for my character
You have the option of generating your ability scores by rolling, Standard Array, or Point Buy.
What class are you?
monk/rogue
Have you played before?
no
I wouldn't recommend multiclassing, then.
Choose one class first. Don't do multiclassing.
can someone recommend stats for a lvl1 monk
I wanna DM for the first time with my brothers with my starter set I bought on two year ago but I messed that up the first time
How come?
Cause we didn’t know what we were doing
I want to play so bad but finding players that will actually stick through is really hard. Soon as they see the length of rules, they run ):
Lmao this made for amazing games in High School for me
House rules or the D&D Rules?
DND rule book!
All I know about the basic rules is just role-play the Dm and dice
They saw those 295 pages on 5E and ran 😭
They only should read the first four chapters on character creation.
I read them, I made a character, and I offered house but it’s hard lmao
Yeah, I offered to help them and stuff but no many showed up to the VC. Just three of us did, and I am not knowledgeable enough to be the DM myself yet 😿
Get them to check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
I mean, no one shows people the baseball rulebook when deciding to play. I realize there's a lot of complexity in D&D, but I don't think "Read this" is a great intro. There's a good video by Shut Up & Sit Down on YouTube about teaching board games (which I think can be extended to D&D and TTRPGs) that might be worth a look.
I played for the first time on a one-shot and with a premade character by the dm on discord and it was about a cult house. I wanna play dnd again so bad
Well, it wasn’t my idea. Our DM, the guy who wanted to DM, told us to read it and I was like sure. I read it, and then I also suggested YouTube and that VC so that I could teach the game instead
im at description and what is faith(making a character
Me too!
The god (or gods) your character follows. Optional.
ok @harsh fjord
I don’t know how people find players 😭 So maybe this server might help me find friends for a campaign
I stomped the final boss (an imp) brains out
Very aggressive approach
I also got nat 1 for the first time through kicking the door
Also, my character was a barbarian

I’m trying to get a feel for this server. I’m brand new. Thank you
Thank you
do you think this could help with card games? sorry if it's off topic
the video you recommended
im making a warforged paladin and i dont like any of the preset backgrounds, does anybody have any ideas for a feature i could create for my own custom background
because i cant really think of one
What did your character do before becoming a paladin?
looking for the guy who created him so he can kill him (i know its cliche)
Right, but any trade? Any locale they became familiar with specifically? Any skills developed in that time?
Hello, I’m interested in dnd and thing I should know?

Be prepared for the DM to ask you create a new character from scratch though.
hes 3 years old, he fought for 2 years in a war and in the time after that he spent alot of time in towns, so i guess hed be good at talking to people
Right, but the DM may have house rules and/or restrictions in place. But now you know the process, so the second time through will be smoother.
not really any trades or anything though
Wait how do I make a character I’m confused
Here's how to start: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Soldier background doesn't speak to you?
i thought about it but i didnt really know if warforged had ranks
You can rename the background then...
That's really up to the DM (and if you don't have one, maybe you can work with them to customize a background better WHEN you find one).
In the meantime, maybe don't worry about it.
i do have a dm, and i would be asking them about this if they weren't offline at the moment
you think itd be better idea to wait to discuss with them?
That'd be my route.
If you know how to make a character and the basics of how to play, find a group using the looking-for channels.
Is it safe to log into discord on that site?
I haven't used it, but mods are on record as it being trustworthy.
It’s called dyno?
Yep.
Can’t have a dm without signing in to dyno?
I mean, you can, but how to look for a group in this server requires using that bot.
Should I get one set of dice for my bday?
I’m wary of singing into it I don’t want to risk my account getting hacked
That's your decision (to both statements, actually).
Just asking cause of addiction from the goblin
If you have a set and expect being unable to control yourself, maybe not?
I have the starter set lost mines dice
Also I’m curious about dice
One is sufficient, but I'm not a dice goblin.
K just asking
When i was starting out I bought enough dice so that I could roll all the damage dice for spells in one roll rather than rolling twice (rolling 10d10 rather than 5d10 twice). I find that 10 sets of dice is the most sets anyone really needs because it lets you do the damage for meteor swarm in two rolls, once for bludgeoning and once for fire.
Yo wsg
I need to authorize first?
I mean if your staring off I would have bought the Players Hnadbook first, not a bad idea with the dice though
How do you expect the bot to know what account to associate with the post otherwise?
Nvm, was logged in on a different user
Hey I wanna start playing dnd and wanna make an artificer what would I need to do to set one up
The artificer's class features are printed in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything so you'd need to get access to it. If you go through the class features alongside the character creation rules in the Player's Handbook you'll be well on your way. Definitely checkout the Handbooker Helper series on youtube if visual learning is your style
Thanks for the feedback
My pleasure, artificer is really fun so I wish you luck
im starting to get into dnd, and i am suddenly a dm now. is rhere any tips about being a dm, i want to any tips.
I just bought a Gnome Artificer miniature because I liked the book in his hands, didn't realise it was not like a wizard lol
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to D&D, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
tysm
ALWAYS be honest!, I hear DMs will lie to give a greater story but the story will be great if told honestly.
Go to the Channels & Roles to get yourself the DM role so you can ask questions and advice in #dm-discussion
Hey I have one last question where should I get the Player's Handbook from there are lots of places so is there like an agreed upon store or is it just what you can find for cheapest not from ebay or wish
DnDBeyond has it digital - which means if you have the mobile app, you can always access it.
Well there is a few options, DnD beyond is a great source for ya info
But you can order physical books through most book resellers - just be aware that buying physical does not give you access to digital
If you would like a book I would suggest looking up your closest game store and going there
Just as buying digital access does not get you a physical book
Thanks for both responses I'm glad to get so much feedback

im new and im using DnD beyond the app
helps make character/ background stats. its nice for newer players to just learn. im sure like 99% of people use it
There are some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel which should help you get started 🙂
Oh okay, i thought there would be some sort of FAQ i have to go through but pin is much easier, thank you :)
Definitely worth reading through the free Basic Rules first and then asking any questions you might have afterwards.
If reading doesn't agree with you, there is a youtube playlist called Handbooker Helper that people have recommended that covers the basics
Uh…hi? I am new, like, I have 0 direct experiences with dnd (I say direct cuz,I did watched the guide and some video from OneShotQuips, but I never be in a session),but I am looking to try it,so…any advice for a Full Newcomer with 0 experiences with dnd like me?

Could anyone recommend a roleplay heavy Westmarch server, that mainly play via voice/video, with setting in Faerûn or similar?
We have #looking-for-community
Yeah, I've been scrolling there, but it's very hard to judge by the posts what to expect. So I was hoping for a recommendation from someone.
What is the point of having proficiency in a shortsword if you already have a proficiency for simple weapons ?
Shortsword is melee, not simple.
yeah shortswords are martial weapons
Melee and simple are not on a continuum
yah okay but what i mean is : is there a point having a proficency in a certain weapon if you already have a proficieny for the category of the weapons of this type ?
Simple and Martial are the categories, each of which contain a variety of melee and ranged weapons
A shortsword is a martial weapon, not a simple weapon.
If you only have proficiency in simple weapons, you don't have proficiency in short swords
When it comes to sorcerers and known spells, do only get a maximum number of known spells per spell level or known spells total. For example at 2nd level spells you can have 2 and 2 1st levels plus 4 cantrips or do you only get 2 spells but you have to choose a select number of spells regardless of their level?
But hypothetically, if you had proficiency in a single weapon and also that weapon’s category, you would still add your proficiency bonus only once for attacks with that weapon.
okay but what if i have proficency in martial weapons ?
then that includes short swords
You add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll, once.
Proficiencies do not stack in this game.
Your proficiency bonus can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
I get it but I don't think you understood what I meant
There is no point. It’s redundant.
thank you
The limit is on your total known spells.
You could choose all 1st-level spells, for example.
if you have three levels in sorcerer, you have a total of 4 spells known, their level is not a part of that number. its just 4 spells of your choosing of a level you can cast
Ok that was where my confusion is. Am I only allowed a certain number of known spells as a sorcerer or do I get more spell slots as I level up?
Known spells and spell slots are separate concepts.
known spells =/= spell slots
Sorry, forgot that spell slots are your limit on how many you can cast a day
Mainly i was just wanting to know if the total known spells increases as I level or if I'm stuck with an arbitrary amount
But yes, the number of known spells does (usually) increase when you level up.
How does that usually work?
That number is shown here per level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
Depends on class
yeah it does.
you can see it on the sorcerer spellcasting table (the one Spamandtuna just posted). you start at level 1 with two spells. then you get one more spell each time you level up.
So at first level, a sorcerer knows 2 spells. At second level, it’s 3, so you learn another spell.
*most times
Some of the higher levels don’t add another.
oh true. thx for catching that
Ok thank you thats what I was wanting to know. One last question, when you reach level 20, is the sorcerer stuck with the spells known or can they exchange them?
Strictly RAW, that’s it. 😅
Um what is RAW?
They can trade one known spell when they level up, but that’ll never happen for them again.
Rules As Written
Oh
Rules as Written. aka without any houserules or specific rulings that a DM might add
Dang that kinda sucks. It doesnt seem very balanced compared to wizards
tbh, play at lvl 20 isn't likely to last all that long
☝🏻 If at all.
It's end-game
I think wizards are more flexible but sorcerers pick something and they're very good at that thing
its Sorcerer's premise yeah. you get a limited number of spells. but you get Metamagic. so that you personalize your small collection
A wizard would also stop getting free spells for leveling up at that point as well, though.
Yeah, the vast majority of campaigns fizzle around lvl 10, so statistically speaking, you're not likely to reach lvl 20 at all.
Of course there are campaigns that do manage to get to end-game, and there are some which start higher.
(Though they do have other ways to acquire spells.)
Most campaigns don’t go beyond like level 12 or 13 bc the game balance doesn’t work beyond that point
yeah. a wizard has a way bigger collection with more ways to add to it. but they do not get anymore than that. no metamagic
If a sorcerer gets a spell scroll (I think thats what its called) do they get to exchange it or do they add it to ones they can exchange on level up?
nope, they can just cast it from the scroll if its a sorcerer spell. otherwise, no interaction iirc
Oh so a sorcerer is stuck with only sorcerer spells regardless of having scrolls?
wizards are the ones who can copy a scroll into their collection aka spellbook. and even then, it has to be a wizard spell
So is this a work around to spells known? As in if you have these items you can use them to cast spells?
i believe so. i'm a tiny bit fuzzy on spell scroll rules though so i MAY be wrong.
as long as they exist on the sorcerer list (notice its the whole list, not just your spells known) you can use em
. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.
notice that:
If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect
Hello
welcome
is all good, we all started some where yah know
I’m really interested in magic, can you teach me how to use magic better.
oh man not me, im a martial guy but there are tons of peoples here who would be willing to help and are better at it than I
Ok,thanks though
What sort of questions do you have about magic in D&D?
I’m a little confused about how to get spells
Well, there's a few ways to get them, but the most common way would be to choose to play a class that has spellcasting, such as a wizard or cleric
Do you have a character already? That might help use give you a more specific answer here.
I like wizard Dragonborn
Ok, great. Wizards have the spellcasting feature, so they will get a handful of spells at level 1.
Yeah, six spells at level 1.
They get two more each time they level up.
There's also rules for adding wizard spells you find in the game -- like a spell scroll -- to a wizard spellbook as well.
That's all covered in the wizard's Spellcasting feature here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#Spellcasting-410
Hey how should I get a group together
Do you have friends/coworkers/classmates who are interested in playing D&D?
Yeah but I have no clue how to do it online
Cool username
If you can only play online there are many ways to do it.
One way is to set up your own private Discord server so you and your friends can communicate by text and/or voice.
Then you would need a virtual tabletop (VTT) such as Roll20 (free and paid accounts), owlbear.rodeo (free), or Foundry (one-time $50 license fee)
There are plenty of ways. You can just do standard discord calls if you want and use lfg channels either here or elsewhere. Lots of websites too.
There are D&D Youtubers who have tutorials on how to get started and set up the various VTTs.
If you're not planning to be the DM, you can always try to join other groups. Check out the #looking-for-players , #750812887697588356 , and #looking-for-community channels.

I'm new to being a dm so I can't link campaigns together any tips?
What do you mean by “link campaigns together”?
Hello! Newbie question but i just want to double check. When my character levels up, i can change a lvl one spell for a level 3 spell? (ofc, having the right lvl/spell slots for it)
When you level up, you can often switch up spells, yes.
Do Goliaths have 4 beginning features ?
So switching a low level spell for a higher one is ok?
Depends on what you count as a “feature”, and also which version of Goliath you’re using.
Officially, even something like Age counts as one of their racial features.
Let’s say you are playing a class that learns it’s spells, like Warlock. If you reach level 5, you get 1 new spell on that level up, but you can also replace one spell you currently know with a new spell. You can replace a lower level spell with a higher level one this way, yes
Which makes 9 for the original Goliath and 6 for the current one.
(Because some of the original features were combined or are now covered by Backgrounds instead.)
Bard in this case
Awesome! Thank you su much guys
I haven’t played D&D since AD&D 2E. Seems like quite a bit has changed. Just got latest PHB and going over all the avail resources
I can’t say that I remember specifics as it was over 20 years ago
Welcome back. You’re right, a LOT has changed since then. If you have any questions, we’re happy to help
Then yes!
In the Bard Spellcasting feature, it says this:
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the bard spells you know and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#Spellcasting-74
Thanks! Kind of crazy between twitch, discord, and all the other platforms that have made it more accessible.
Well, specifics aside, one of the main differences you'll find between then and now is that the genre of game has changed. I've never played anything other than 5e, personally, but I love talking about older versions with people that have played them. From what I understand, AD&D was more akin to a survival horror and resource management game. It was the type of thing where death was around every corner, and you had to carefully manage your food and health and magic in order to survive. Most of that has gone by the wayside now. 5e is much more of a heroic fantasy game about powerful heroes accomplishing great feats. Of course, every table is a bit different and some of that comes down to DM style, but in general character just have much more resources, and are much more powerful
goliath from dndb
Guys how do I use the "find players thing"
i count as a feature all their specifics traits

so not the age/size/names
Its's pretty much a different game.
Like the entire genre changed it's mostly names of things that are still similar
click the links in that bot post
So I have a few books and reading the monster manual I noticed a few monsters have “(titan)” next to their type and when I checked the explanation of types in the first section in the Monster Manual I didn’t see anything on Titans.
monster subtypes like that are just a flavor thing. They don't mean anything, mechanically
Not yet
Though theoretically they could
If Wizards ever releases something like the Ranger again ^^
Ok, next question.
I have the Monster Manual and Monsters of the Multiverse, should I get the Tome of Foes?
If you want to play games similar to 2e you could try some of ORS (old school revival) games
Otherwise, I'd look into the genre of 5e, the types of stories it tells, because in my experience that's what trips old timers up the most
Nah. Tome of Foes is legacy content. Everything in it is considered to be outdated
How do?
Just clarification, I don’t do online.
Monsters of the Multiverse is the revamped version of tome of foes
So you get the same content, but fit for a more modern design philosophy
Two things jump out at me. Kind of polar opposites… 1 - a lot seem heavy on modules. 2 - using the rules for custom worlds. But definitely intriguing
How many creatures didn’t make it to the Multiverse book?
Monsters of the Multiverse is a combination of the content from Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide, put together and updated to better fit the modern version of the game. So those two books are out of date now
Pretty sure all made it
They just changed some rules and lore
Ok.
For example made spellcasters better to run etc.
Are there other books full of monsters?
Not solely dedicated iirc
So the bad recent spelljammer set has a third dedicated to monsters, and all modules have at least one or two
Fizban's Treasury of Dragons has a large amount of monster stat blocks in it, but are all dragon themed
They’re both on DDB.
Ahh right, that as well
That’s cool, I’m getting that soon anyway.
But either way, the count is higher than four.
Then yeah, the legacy Goliath has nine racial traits.
There is also a lot of 3pp
Which is better than official content lol
I noticed plant is a creature type.
Any 5e official playable races with this type?
Nope
what ?
i only see 4
(FWIW, the newer Goliath also has features called Mountain Born and Stone’s Endurance.)
For example MCDM is working on a monster book ("Flee, Mortals!") and the test packages they are releasing are already great, so you can use those
Darn.
Mountain Born, Stone's endurance, Powerful build and Natural Athlete
Most creature types don't
oooh
They only recently started using something other than Humanoid
There have been Fey playable race options for quite a while actually
you're taking age, size, languages, speed and ability score increase in count as well
Ability Score Increase
Age
Size
Speed
Natural Athlete
Stone’s Endurance
Powerful Build
Mountain Born
Languages
Oh yeeah yeah
Yes, those are also their racial traits.
Well "quite a while"
It has only been 2-3 years
That's nothing
sure but I meant the racial traits that were exclusive to the Goliaths
Gotcha
Thanks though
That’s why I said at the beginning that it depends on what you consider a feature. 😅
Strictly RAW, they all are.
Even if half of them are common between different races.
There’s plasmoids which are playable oozes, and I think Thri-Kreen is a monstrosity.
But no plants?
Fae were the first
Hehehe.
Not yet, though heroic, medium sized races are not that common, so might take a while
Huzzah, let’s see where this goes…
well sure, if you want to look at older editions, I'm sure everything has been done before, at least once
From the 4E PHB 3
Shardmind (living humanoid-shaped crystal beings)
Wilden (living humanoid-shaped plant beings)
but if you want to turn one of those into a 5e race, that would be a topic for #homebrew
We’re not they’re yet, but yes, I know.
That's why I scoff at D&D Youbtubers like Dungeon Coach who claims his homebrews are OMGNEW! when all he had to do was look at previous editions.
Yeah, is that legal though?
Just converting old to new and selling it?
Ask your DM.
There are plenty of previous edition conversions to 5E on DMs Guild.
But many names are not
I don’t mean in game, also I’d be the dm in my group.
Whenever I can get it together.
Not that it matters as 3pp converters often put more effort in that the seattle company lol
If you want to sell something then you will want to read the OGL (the previous one) and/or DMs Guild's legal statements.
That's "Ask your DM" if they allow homebrews or not. I don't allow outside homebrew stuff at my table.
Nah, I’m too busy making my own board game to create something for someone else’s.
boooo ^^
This makes sense.
they've been in the game since at least 3rd edition
this suggests its new in general, not to the edition
Here in #dnd-newcomers, it’s generally assumed we’re talking 5e, since that’s the version newcomers are most likely to be playing.
I mean not in a discussion about 5e in specific.
Especially after I mentioned that older editions have others a bit above that
Let’s keep things civil, please.
Hello
Welcome!
Hey is there a way to find irl groups on this server?
I mean you could theoretically ask
But this is a public server so sharing your location might not be the best idea
Try the #looking-for-community channel. That will link you up with other Discord servers, where people are running D&D games.
If you use the search system, you might find some that are physically located near you.
Hello everyone! New dm for dnd here. If I wanted to add my own items into a campaign shop. Life for example I'm running a modified dragon of icespire peak campaign, and wanted to add a spell guard shield into one of the shops. Where would I find a reasonable gold listing price for that?
Xanathar's has a table for suggested gp price of magic items based on their rarity.
Quick character creation question related to 5E Warlocks; When rolling stats, I put my two lowest rolls into Strength and Constitution, and my highest rolls into Dexterity and Charisma. Just wondering if that's a safe bet for Warlocks in general?
The Warlock Quick Build suggests this:
First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#CreatingaWarlock
Then I’d probably put DEX third.
(Or DEX second, CON third.)
Got it, thanks
Dex second if you’re going Pact of the Blade, anyway.
(Unless you’re also doing Hexblade.)
Just to echo: I would recommend not making Con one of your lowest stats, regardless of your class. Everyone needs HP.
Don't use Con as a dump stat unless you know for an absolute fact that your DM is giving you plot armor
It really depends, tactics can go a long way, but as a person who plays low con characters on a regular basis, I wouldn’t suggest playing low con characters until you’ve played a lot of dnd games
And given that this channel is for newcomers...
The message was moreso directed towards you, not in a derogatory way or anything, just pointing out a relatively niche situation
dnd is wild jesus ive been reading and watching so many things and all ive gotten out of it are headaches holy hell
It's fun, it's generally a good idea to find a good first group and get a foothold rather than dive head first. I used adventure league and one shots as my testing ground.
are those discord servers or websites?
or something else entirely
i have no idea how to find a group
Adventure league games are typically held in larger towns and cities. You can search on wizards of the coast website to get a list of official ones. The best way to find a group otherwise is in something like this discord. I'm in a Facebook group that's basically people posting about starting games or looking for games to join. There's various meetup site to look for too.
ahhh i just dont want a DM being on my ass for not knowing stuff
Just make sure to find one that's newcomer friendly and doesn't mind taking time to teach.
Most DMs in my experience are pretty understanding with new players, when in doubt it's always better to ask about a rule.
Basic rules for most games that mean a lot to DMs is asking before you roll, and asking what if anything they'd like you to roll.
i see that make senses
how should i go about learning dnd
yeah
i wanted to play every since ive seen critical role
i restumbled on it because of a highschools dnd club in my area

Could also do what a player in a campaign I started did. I was their first dm but they watched podcasts and YouTube videos of others games to get a general idea
The wall dyno posted and in pins have some resources to get started!
thank you :)
can any race be any class? like all i see are small people as rogue can i be like an elf rogue
Yes, I made a fairy barbarian who wields a greatsword. He's two feet tall, but has 18 strength.
ahh nice
is there a rule that says i can't give characters more eyes than they are supposed to have (like 4 eyes or 6 or 7)
creepy spider human
As long as your not changing game mechanics and your DM is happy with it go for it, flavour is free
yay
so how do i play with my char like how do i tell my dm my char do i describe him or like send him a SS or is there like an app i use
Well you need to find a game first so use the looking for channels or look for a local game store for IRL play
sorry for the inconvenience
You probably want to share the character sheet in whatever medium you and your DM agree as well as some backstory/description of your character
https://locator.wizards.com/ click stores and search your area
oh my there isnt one near me
That’s just the places that are registered with WOTC you could find other hobby shops in your area
Maybe try meetup for your local area? There might be a TTRPG group on there
Coffee shops, library, anywhere you find nerds hanging out you will find dnd players
i dont really go to places like those lmao i just hit the gym up mostly
thats why im trying to find a group to play with online or something
Yeah, finding a group is hard sometimes
Gym bro dnd 💪
gym bros
well ill keep looking at the looking for players chat see if anyone is willing
wait @raven kayak ur a DM?

Not really, no. Though I'd wanna try.
Any new games happening this weekend?
well if u ever need a player i am a OVERLY QUALIFIED candidate
which is a lie
but still i am a candidate
Lol
I think my biggest dream would be to play a campaign in my own fantasy world that I have yet to create
I've never DMd before other than text chats with simple systems, but if nothing is happening I would have to. Really want to play.
As a dm I'd probably be better in describing things than actually knowing the rules lmao.
There's so many rules
rightt
I'm used to GURPS and Warhammer so I forgot all the 5e stuff after a while.
But I have the book and cookbook lol
Yeah, there's an rpg for it no one plays.
OHHHH
Well Warhammer fantasy role playing game.
Wouldn't want to run that though since I don't know the lore and rather make stuff up.
Also no one wants to play that system, myself included.
People do you just have to find them, nerds are hard work it’s like herding cats to get a group together
🔫 play
how long does a campaign last
Also it’s just after xmas everyone is going back to work school college etc so things will pick up in the next few months once people sort their lives out
It depends. I remember seeing a video on YouTube about a person who's been running a campaign for like 30 years or something
holy shit
just had one of my campaigns end today
2 years
we beat the final boss by using telekinesis to send him back through the portal he came through and then closing the portal
ahhh world ending boss fight i needd
I’ve been playing my current one since nov 21 and we are no where near to finishing
started in 2020
does it end if everyone dies?
Lol what’s up guys, I just joined
that sounds good
Welcome
risk of perma death makes it exciting
I need y’all help for something tho
So my friends introduced me to dnd like a couple months ago, and I made a character, with a great backstory and everything for this campaign that I have no idea when we’re actually starting
usually if everyone dies at the same time then you do end the campaign.
Thanks
ofc ofc i totally dont want u to make a world so i can play not at all
We did a good amount one-shots which got me REALLY into the game. And now I’m really really hooked and wanna play more😂 been watching so much critical role but it’s not enough for me🥹
So I wanted to know is this a server that can help me with that @fresh fable
i enjoy this now thank
did u find a dm already @runic steeple?
no :')
i was finna cry if u did
Do you guys do one shots or anything like that often?
#looking-for-players or try a local game store
so for Story-based character progression / XP-based character progression do i do milestone or xp?
Wait is there a channel where i can tell about the lore for my world?
or does that depend of the dm
Depends on your DM
Thank you Ratty! I didn't know.
Local game store? Its actually people in there plays dnd?
Yeah
i think most of them should have dnd
can my dude be a healer and still have fighting knowledge or is he just set on healing people and stuff
jester was a fighter and a healer in CR
In UK we have loads of independent stores or we have geek retreats opening up all the time now
Clerics or Druids can be fighty and use healing spells
Paladins are more fighty, less magic but can still do some healing
Are geek retreats a brand? I haven't come across them in the South East before
thank you :))
Yeah franchise
after i make my char can i go back and change some stuff? in dnd beyond?
hey guys! are there any magic weapons that allow me to light the ground on fire?
It appears like one opened and then closed in my town last year without me realising
It’s a hard business to get started and keep running we had 3 Indy stores near me shut down in the past 2 years
Yes there’s an edit button it’s how you level up but you can go back to edit the basic stuff as well
can you be a dm and a player or do you have to pick one (like play sometimes, be a dm other times?)
wouldnt that be confusing for the dm
he/she would have to keep going back and forth with themselves when its their turn
oh i meant like in different games
Yeah i was thinking the same
Ohhhh
Like you wouldn't change dms in the same campaign
yeah that would be confusing id think
yeah
Yeah your DM will let you know what to use, but nothing is stopping you coming up with character concepts, you just fine tune them when you get into a game
okaiii got it
Sure you can do both some people play the n multiple campaign at a time
solid :)
You just need free time.
Yeah that’s the real BBEG ( big bad evil guy)
huzzah i have so much free time currently
mmm i have pen on my arm because I'm drawing characters and stuff
Is it inconsistent and a bad idea to give your players the option to use any of the three?
It's just we are first time players and dms and we gave the option to do all three
Probably because we didn't know this stuff
How much inconsistency does it pose?
It can cause a lot probably- like, what if someone rolls really badly and someone rolls good?
This is why I have my players use Point Buy so it's fair for everyone.
Ive played some games and so far the best results were with a dm who made us roll, but said that all the ability scores added up should be above or below a certain amount so it's fair.
that too ^
from the outside looking in i do feel as if point buy is the best
i did it
i made a char i think
hes weak doe
so for world building and stuff is there like a main base you should go off of or do you just think until something comes to mind
Everyone to use the same method buy point buy or standard array are the best for new people
Yeah only 1 person rolled
They rolled really lucky
That’s the thing you could have 1 over powered player and 1 really week player with rolling experiences anger players can make it work but new players can get disheartened about it
If your a new player/dm I’d stick to the modules/source books so you can focus on the rules and enjoy the game, once you get a bit more experienced feel free to create your own world
okay cool,, thanks :)
True but I'm glad to say that's not the case
Our map for dps has to be our cleric
With inflict wounds he oneshots alot of low level enemies
Honestly as a half spell caster I'm jealous that people already have their second level spells
Lmao then I realise that I am untouchable atm with my ac
@runic steeple @lyric fjord make sure you pick roles in the top channel so you get access to the other channels like #1045165827068002374
alright
got it
Is it a d90 or d100?
What is the context you are seeing it in?
d90 is not a thing in dnd
You roll two tensided die (d10). the first one gives the tens, the second one gives the ones.
If you roll a zero on the first one, it means you will get single digit results. (0 ,1 =1 ), (0,2=2) etc.
If you roll zero on both die (0 , 0 ) that would be considered 100 (in some games at least)
Ok. Was just curious. My dice set came with a D4,6,8,10,12,20 and i wasnt sure if it was called a 90 or 100 bc one has 00 and not 100 so i didnt know
Percentile dice, or d100, work a little differently. You generate a number between 1 and 100 by rolling two different ten-sided dice numbered from 0 to 9. One die (designated before you roll) gives the tens digit, and the other gives the ones digit. If you roll a 7 and a 1, for example, the number rolled is 71. Two 0s represent 100. Some ten-sided dice are numbered in tens (00, 10, 20, and so on), making it easier to distinguish the tens digit from the ones digit. In this case, a roll of 70 and 1 is 71, and 00 and 0 is 100.
hello, Im someone who is interested in the game, but honestly have no idea where to start, as I know absolutly no-one who plays the game. could anyone send me in the right direction?
Hi there! The best start to D&D is getting yourself accustomed to the rules by reading the basic rules and asking questions whenever you find something you have trouble with.
For finding games we have some channels dedicated to finding groups and players too!
Also we have a bunch of usefull links up in the pinned messages in this channel :)

?dndroles
We don't have that command, we only have three role options; player, DM, and pronoun
funny the FAQ says to use that command to list the roles but not what the roles are or how to set them
That FAQ is out of date since we moved over to the new system. I'll raise again that it needs updating
JSYK, none of the channels are role-locked anymore. You should be able to access any of them.
You can also visit Channels and Roles to show or hide any individual channel as well.
And you can now Favorite channels in the channel list as well, to move them to the top of the list.
Im completely new to DnD all I know is that you have die and there's different classes and stuff, is there a channel to fully explain the rules of DnD?
Fully explain? Not really
Your best bet would be reading through the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
You don't need to read the whole thing though
I would also say that your best of just watch your turn of the Indy videos on YouTube and that's a good way to get to grips with it I mean that's basically how I did it
Just sections of making a character, using ability scores, and combat I'd say
What D&D is is a tabletop roleplaying game where you play a character exploring settings and adventures that the Dungeon Master runs, using dice and your characters game statistics to determine if you're able to overcome challenges
Yep, wisdom right here
So many videos on getting started on youtube, handbooker helper is a popular one
Thanks I can probably put some links in if you want
Ok that came out wrong I meant I can put some links on here if the person who asked the question wants to and it would be generally helpful for newbies
Sounds good to me
@last citrus might wanna add some context as to what those link to; embeds are disabled here
These links are to D&D Youtube channels that could be good for newbies to watch just a heads up there are a lot of dnd horror stories out there but you shouldn't let that put you off the game
For every bad player or horrible Story there's a amazing group of about 1000 people who just want to have fun
Removing the first two as they're not really suitable for this channel. Getting into Elder Evils and D&D horror stories isn't really the right vibe
Ok confession I didn't really watch those I just went on to channels I personally watch and put a few videos from their channels on there
Cancel channels I good it's just I didn't watch those Pacific videos
Hi im new to dnd and Ive gotten myself into dming for a group of 3 People who are also new. I wanna give them the best experience for their First time. I have a few encounters that i think are good and exciting but from my POV the Time where my Players arent in encounters seems to be lacking. Any Tips on how to make the these more interesting?
Describe the surroundings utilizing senses - e.g. "It's a beautiful spring day and a cool breeze whispers through the pines. The smell of pine trees tickles your noses and birdsong echoes through the forest. Your footfalls are muffled by the pine needles covering the path. Sunrays peeks through the pine cover, dappling the forest floor in light and shadow."
Also encourage the players to help describe the environment - e.g. "Jane, describe what your character sees as they walk along the forest path?"
The Main Problem is that theyll spend most of the session Inside of an abandoned mine. But ill try to just describe as much as Possible then
And have the players help describe things from their character's point of view - it's a great way to get them invested in the scene/setting and helps with role-play.
Thanks for the tips. Appreciate it :-))
For more DM support, feel free to check out #dm-discussion where you can find other DMs.
I’m still rusty on when to use spell save dc over spell attack bonus. It’s like the same thing to me. I still don’t get it if I asked this question already
The spell tells you
If the spell says "make a ranged spell attack" or "make a melee spell attack", you make a spell attack roll
If the spell says the target must succeed in a saving throws, they make a saving throw using the ability the spell says to use
The DC of the spell saving throw is 8 + your proficiency bonus + your spellcasting ability modifier
So if I attack with a fireball they have to make s Dexteity saving throw?
Yes, all effected creatures in the area would need to make a dexterity throw. Those who pass the save take half damage, those who fail take the full damage.
It's a saving throw check so d20+ dex save modifier
spells are generally either spell attack or saving throw. Two ways of determining whether the spell takes full effect.
The spell will tell you
the spell will say
"make a ranged/melee spell attack"
or
"the target(s) take (3d6 for example) if they fail a (insert saving throw type here)" and then most spells also say "or half on a success"
Magic missile doesn’t say what to use
Just read in-order and follow the instructions as they are written. Scan the text and look for either "spell attack" or "saving throw".
magic missile is one of the cases where there is neither, it always hits
good catch, that's because its special. it immediately applies the damage, no save or attack required
There are always exceptions
Some have multiple saves, some always take effect, some have multiple attacks, some have both spell attack and save. But for 90%, they are either spell attack OR saving throw.
(or rather 90% that target to deal damage... there are tons that have neither that are more utility)
yeah. and then there's spells that are more "utility". like Create or Destroy Water. which takes the effects listed right away. none of which are damaging to a creature
beat me to it
jinx!
One example of both is Ice Knife, attack for initial hit, then it explodes and dex saves for all close for extra damage.
Ray of frost uses spell attack bonus?
Yes
It's in the spell, usually in the first or second sentence
Make a ranged spell attack against the target means I use spell attack bonus against the targets ac?
Yep
2nd sentence of the spell - what does it say? 😉
Make a ranged spell attack against the target
And that means you use your spell attack bonus when making that attack
Sorry again. What does it mean to prepare a spell? Isn’t the spell already prepared when it’s in the spell book?
So some classes get to prepare spells every day. This means the player can chose which spells the character will have available for that day from whatever pool of spells that the character knows.
So with dnd is it only in a midevil time span or can it be send jn moden day or even the future
There’s probably different variations of DND
D&D can be set into any timeframe although the core game mechanics is very based on high fantasy (like Tolkein)
You can do those things, but D&D might not be the best system
There are many other table top roleplaying games out there
D&D is very good at being D&D, but it's not a universal system
I was just wondering
If you want to ask about other systems, #non-dnd-topics is a good place to ask
Okay
It includes your spell casting modifier, but also includes your proficiency bonus. Almost all (standard/basic/unaltered) modifier/bonus is made up of one of your ability modifiers/bonus + proficiency bonus (IF you have proficiency in whatever it is). Attack, saving throw, or ability check. There may be additional effects or abilities that add more on top, but at the core, it's always an ability mod and maybe prof.
And yeah think modifier === bonus === +/- X (to a d20 roll) in most cases.
Ok thank you
Hi guys. I'm a noob but looking forward to playing Planegea. Will I need a solid understanding of DND's core rules to run/play?
I wasn't sure if Planegea has its own rules.
Hey guys, never played D&D before, watched quite a few hours on youtube, really interested in starting a campaign and getting super involved, please msg me if youre happy to help out 🙂
You will, Planegea is a setting; a location described with it's own rules that build on the existing D&D rules

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I have the core rulebook on DND Beyond, gonna give it a read. If I have questions, this seems like the place for help. 🙂
how would I go about finding a group of people who wouldnt mind having a newcomer? wanted to get into this for a long time. dont know why i never thought of online
Check out the channels I linked above, many are often newcomer friendly
My 6 year game was all newcomers
my partner has bought me the dragons of stormwreck isle starter set for xmas and the guidebook for spells mages warrior and beats to help but due to my location theres mot much of a community so thought i would give online a go
Any octopus/squid/cuttlefish-like races?
Not officially.
Any tips on remembering the rules during play, or does rules knowledge accumulate through continuous gameplay? I'm a memorize through repetition kind of man.
You can create a cheat sheet for rules you have trouble with, but I find repetition helps a ton.
You can homebrew one.
I know that, I just wanted to know if I didn't need to do more work.
My recommendation is to ask the dm if you are able to do something, after a while you will remember the rules.
Alright, sounds good to me.
👍
Alright, what are the weirdest official 5e playable races other than the spelljammer ones?
The lineages or the Eberron stuff?
I do not know of any, I only know the basic ones and aasimar
Can I get a "for dummies" explanation of lineage?
Can I get a for dummies explanation for it all please
so i have never played before and i would like to get a start but i really dont know anything not even how to build a character any advice ?

I have ravenloft.
So are people playing dnd like online here or is it just a forum situation
No games happen here. It's a discussion hub.
I would recommend, if you are just starting, try out a melee class first because in my opinion spellcasters are a little more complex.
You can find others to play with through the LFG channels, though.
yah i planned on being a melee so for my character sheet is this something i write down on a piece of paper ?
You should take a look at the rules, which includes steps for how to create a character. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
There is a sheet that I use, I don't have access to it on this device, anyone have the ravenloft character sheet?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
This’ll give you all the information you need for what to put down on your character sheet.
Not really, the melee classes are, I think, rogue, ranger, barbarian, and fighter.
Fighter being the simplest in my opinion.
Rogue is more fun in my opinion
Rangers have magic. The strictest list of martials is fighter, rogue, and barbarian. Some folks include monk; some omit.
Yeh rogue is dope. Roll all the dice
I thought they did, thank you.
i think i might do a fighter half orc
👍
that a good combo?
Any race can work as any class.
ah okay
Some are recommended to not be combined. Such as half-orc and wizard.
How so?
I'd imagine it has to do with the (legacy) half-orc ASIs.
I don't think so.
Darn.
Imma ask this here because #homebrew is kinda dead, how many racial trait/features is too many?
@fiery cobalt please use the correct channel, regardless of how 'dead' it might be
That's not how the channels work - people will respond as they have time and are interested
Half-orcs are more of the type to be brutes instead of intelligent spellcasters
Sorry for late response
Such recommendations are largely driven by that race’s Ability Score Increase, where you’d want one that complements your class.
Also that
But the rules are definitely moving away from that mindset.
And that's the older legacy rules - the Monsters of the Multiverse has changed things to reflect that it's training, not race, that determines your Attribute Skills. So you can allocate the +2 and +1 differently.
In Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, there’s rules that let such races reassign those increases however they like.
And yeah, new races have that freedom built in.
I mean, that could also be taken as a newcomer's question but alright.
then that would be #dnd-newcomers lol.
i'm sorry i had to
Homebrew falls outside of the scope of this channel very explicitly
New to D&D or D&D Beyond? Got questions on how to get started? Ask them here! We ask people focus on the basics; more advanced questions can be asked in our other channels
Homebrew is very much not the basics
true
Yeah, I forgot they where weird about that stuff here, apologies.
So I have a set of dice, what else should I have/bring as a new player?
I want to hire a DM to host a few games to help my friends and family get up to speed. Where is the best place to find top DMs?
An understanding of the rules and your character sheet.
Some understanding of the rules as far as it connects with your character (e.g. how to roll a skill check, how to roll and attack, how to roll damage), a desire to keep learning the rules, a desire to play your character and work with your DM and group to have a fun time.
We have #paid-looking-for-game. You can also check out StartPlaying.
Also there's #looking-for-community if you're building a server
I planned on doing that already lol, but I'm meaning more like material items. I know there's note taking but idk if that's for the dm or if each player keeps a notepad handy
A place to take notes as a player is a good idea. Your DM will appreciate it, almost certainly.
Can also be good if the DM is running a mystery kind of plot and for obvious reasons won't always want to remind players of details from the previous session...

Take a look at the pinned posts in this channel if you haven’t already!

I do have a question although
Are Minotaur characters common, because I made one
That's up to your DM and their campaign setting.
It really depends on the setting and DM.
Some might have no minotaurs at all. Some might have tons. They are an official race in the game, but DMs include/omit content for a variety of reasons.
Yup, I don't allow the certain playable races from the MtG and Eberron settings at my table.
In my campaign they're pretty rare, but I never exclude a race from my players overpowered or not
Ah I see
I would say that the most classic to DnD would be humans, elves, dwarves, half-elves, half-orcs, halflings and gnomes but all kind of races have been around and with different editions there have been added new ones in the Players Handbook, such as tieflings and dragonborns.
The different settings also have rather shifting races. But minotaurs haven't really been in the spotlight. They would be one of the races sometimes referred to as monstrous races.
so while being an old classic it is not one of the most iconic of DnD-races.
I EXIST

can someone recommend some good apps/websites for making battlemaps

This maybe obvious and not necessary but, why do we need 7 dices for the game? And in what situations does it called for?
D20 is used for general checks, attack rolls, and saving throws.
The rest of the dice are often used just for damage rolls.
Some exceptions may exist - e.g. Dungeon Master using a d6 on a random encounter table.
I only know what a D20 is others not so much
mostly damage and other effects such as Bardic Inspiration, Martial Arts dice, etc
d12 = 12 sided die
d10 = 10 sided die, use two to roll percentile
d8 = eight sided die…
d6 = 6 sided die
d4 = 4 sided die
does anyone know what to do after making a character?? im pretty lost rn
Try to find a group to join.

Hello
I have a question about Adventures league. What races are allowed? The documentation speaks to a sidebar (and I am not finding it)
Hi there! Best to check in at the source: #adventurers-league channel should be able to answer that!
Thank you!
Quick question, what’s the difference between wis and int not really sure what each one does either
Intelligence measures mental acuity, accuracy of recall, and the ability to reason.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Intelligence
Wisdom reflects how attuned you are to the world around you and represents perceptiveness and intuition.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Wisdom
Wisdom is learned experience knowledge. Intelligence is book knowledge and how to take knowledge and potentially apply it to something else.
It's an often asked question: Intelligence is more academic knowledge, ability to recall things, logic etc.
Wisdom is more experience, intuition, empathy
When I make a character with spell,do they start only with their class’s given spell,or do I get to choose to learn more? (Ps,in this case,I mean the one that is just created,a lvl1)
Usually spellcasting classes give you a choice of spells, but given a certain number you can learn or prepare.
What class are you playing as?
You can choose from the spell list, the spells listed at the beginning are just a recommendation.
Basically no class has spells that are 'forced' upon you (cleric has domain spells but you can still prepare a certain other number)
Life domain Cleric, which give Bless and Cure wound for start,I was asking if The character can learn more right away,or do the character have to learn it in a campaign?
Then yeah, you get your Domain Spells, which are always prepared.
Cleric can prepare different spells each day.
Those two spells are always considered prepared though
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
So you always have Bless and Cure Wounds, but can still prepare other spells, up to your Wis modifier + cleric level, each day
Basically your Domain Spells just don’t count against the number you can prepare.
Though I'd not recommend cleric to a newcomer as preparing new spells each day can easily get overwhelming
(And sometimes include spells you wouldn’t normally be able to prepare.)
I mean, you’re never required to change your spells…
So even if the character isn’t in any campaign yet,he can still learn spell like Mending And/Or Shield of Faith ,right away?
Yes? Campaigns have nothing to do with a classes ability to learn spells game mechanic wise
So…since my character has wisdom modifier of +2,and the cleric class is at lvl 1, I can learn/prepare 3 spell, does it count Bless and Curewound?
That would be three plus your domain spells.
Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#DivineDomain-109
The domain spells are automatically known and prepared.
So you’ll have five spells in total.
Oh,so…The Bless and Cure Wound spell, were my Domain spell?
Correct
(Choosing a different subclass would grant a different set of spells there.)
The 3 spell I choose, does it count the cantrip?
Cantrips known is separate from your prepared spells.
No, that’s just your prepared (leveled) spells.
The Cleric Table shows how many cantrips you know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#TheClericTable
Oh,okay,so I just go with how much the app limited me to? Yes I got the D&D beyond app
And as an important distinction: because cantrips are known and not prepared, you can’t change them each day.
The cantrips you pick are largely permanent.
(There’s an optional class feature in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything that lets you change one whenever you get an Ability Score Improvement.)
Yeah, D&D Beyond will automatically calculate how many spells you can pick, and stop you from going over.
So just pick until you can’t. 😅
i made a multiclass charecter (rouge and bard) and i was wondering how using dice would work. don't they use different types of die??
I'd recommend not multiclassing if you're a new player, especially if you haven't absorbed the basics of gameplay.
But if you are committed to the concept, what dice are you referring to specifically?
im not exactly sure im watching tutorials and i think the act is called prerequisites, though im not sure what type of dice the classes use
This is the info from the Basic Rules about multiclassing: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
I'm not understanding your question, though.
its alright im not understanding my self tbh, this is really confusing!! thanks though ill learn a little more about this multiclassing or i might just remove it from my charecter.
So, im completely new to DND does anyone ahve any pointers on where to start or how to start?

Hey I’m also new and I’m having a problem trying to find a group to play with especially being a newb is there any tips for that?
Were you thinking of Hit Dice, perhaps?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
Be proactive and cast a wide net. There are a number of ways to find a group to play with, especially if you're willing/able to play online.
This server is just one place to do so among many others.
Im not sure but ill read into it
That’s the only one I can think of that’s specific to a class, at least.
(Even though bards and rogues both happen to use a d8 for that.)
is there some chart that tells you what type of die the classes use??
Each class description specifies which hit die it uses. I don't think there's a chart for all of them, but there might be.
The basic rules would list it (barring artificer I think?)
this is way to confusing, i think ill stick to one class for now (until im more knowledgeable att this game) thanks for all the information though ill read it!

That's more of a #dm-discussion question

So what on earth is Adventurers League? I’ll run the command here first because I can’t find a better channel
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Alrightttt okay, so again, I'm new here. Hello!
Welcome!
Thank you! I've been trying to learn how to create a character and I'm not even looking at the app yet. I'll go to it if I'm utterly confused. Which I'm getting close to it
The DnDBeyond app does a pretty good job of leading you through the process.
But also check out the first chapter of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
It actually goes through a step by step process of creating a character.
Ohhhh. Okay🤔 lemme get on my tablet for this
I was looking at the description of some feats and this line of magic iniatiate confused me
you learn a 1st level spell and get a free cast of it.
Does that mean you can use it without needing a spell slot?
per long rest
Ahhh I was about to say learning a level 1 spell without the need of spell slots sounds a little op
ahhh thats neat That would be neat with my paladin especially considering they have no cantrips
The official wording clarifies it better than that description:
In addition, choose one 1st-level spell to learn from that same list. Using this feat, you can cast the spell once at its lowest level, and you must finish a long rest before you can cast it in this way again.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/magic-initiate
Do you guys know any tropes for my character that I should avoid, I don't want to be 'that guy' or some murder for the sake of murder guy
I mean, it’s hard to say much without knowing the table you’re playing at. But it’s probably good to avoid being a murderhobo. Also, don’t be a loner type—it’s a team game, so you should want to work with the party for the most part. On that note, don’t make your character sound like an anime protagonist who is Very Special; the group is the main character, not any one player character.
I would say you can be a loner character as long as they arent the type to completely ignore the party.
Someone who chooses their words carefully and interacts slowly, and opens up to their friends over the course of the game isnt a bad character, but its very easy to play them in bad ways.
And yeah, they cant be to special, any ammount of cockyness needs to be earned or a clear flaw. You cant just make a character who thinks hes better than everyone in the party because engaging with that character isnt fun.
Another trope thats annoying is a character who takes away opportunities.
A while back a olayer at a table i was a part of would constantly break our stealth to introduce himself to any sentient creature he found because "he just wants friends, its what he would do"
Other things are like making a face who absolutely HAS to always be the talker even when the skills required arent what theyre good at. If youre a strong barbarian with high intimidation but low deception, let your allies do the lying. Dont be a spotlight thief.
Yeah these all exist in the real world but they dont make good adventurers for a reason and its uncommon to see them in a hero party
When making your character and considering things such as flaws ask yourself if thatd be annoying to the point of wanting to leave the table for you if someone else always did it
Hey guys, I'm about to start my first campaign with my friends but I'm worried my stats are low for my class (fighter). I randomized them when I set them and I thought they were fine but as I completed my sheet and look at others, my numbers seem really low. Should I be so concerned about this?
Those stats are significantly low
Yeah you're going to have problems as a Fighter. Those stats seem low overall, but you have your three worst stats in what are probably the three most important for Fighters. By "randomize" do you mean you randomly chose which score when in which ability? Why would you choose to allocate them that way? Was is a rule of the table?
I would talk to your dm and ask to reroll them if you can, it all depends on how your dm decided stats should be done. I would work with them to get better ones, your str con and dex are probably your most important in order, but cha can be good on fighters too
I used an online random generator to generate those numbers, I'm not too sure how it does it. There was no table rule for it I just decided I'd let fate choose my stats. I want to reroll them but I'm worried I have to redo my entire character sheet 😢
The way my table does it is roll 4d6 and drop the lowest number from the roll and then you place them in stats according to preference.
Some use the point buy method and others roll a d20 and reroll 19 and 20. There are a lot of ways.
Your dm may have a preference i would speak with them
You would have to redo a good chunk of your sheet but you wont be able to keep up with stats like that
number one thing i reccomend to new players is dont roll stats to begin with
most dms wont accept rolled stats "at home"
Talk with the DM. Many won’t let you bring stats generated any other way than the DM’s preferred method, especially independently of the DM’s witnessing.
I mean... ive never met a dm who didnt
Though i suppose ive only played with 5 or 6
It truly is dm preference though, communicate with them the best way to handle situations
Gotcha thanks guys, if my stats do change will I just need to change my armor, initiative and weapon attack bonus?
Yep, but if you understand the mechanics behind those numbers, it should go quickly.
