i wanted to round out my other stats because my strength was in the negatives, should i rearrange them?
INT is your main stat, you biggest priority should be to max it
Str should be a dump stat for wizards.
You're not going to be lugging around heavy weapons and armour.
can you just do that on a character that is being used in play already?
thats something you should talk with your DM about if that is the case
cool
Okay. Normally DMs don't allow players to change their ability scores during an adventure
okay so to give someone disadvantage on dex saves, you need to restrain them
They should have gone over your character sheet with you.
if someone is paralysed or stunned, they automatically fail dex saves
the problem with that is that pretty much all your spells that give out those conditions also require concentration, so you will have to chose between that and greater invisibility
i could sacrifice greater invisibility for that
yeah then hold person would work or web
awesome, thanks again !! 🙏
Are you supposed to run everything about your character by with your dm? I really wanna make a character but I don't exactly have a DM so I don't know if having a 'Pre-made' character works.
You can make a character beforehand and show it to the dm once you join a campaign
Just be ready for a DM to reject or request changes depending on their setting/game
It's just that changing stuff during a campaign is going will get confusing and result in an inconsistent character/expectation
This is what I tend to do even though I have a DM. I come up with a character and then talk to them about it once it's fully formed in my head.
And along with this, be ready to just say that'll change my concept too much, I'm gonna save that for another board and come up with something new.
Okie swag thank you
Heeeey so I don’t know what class to play as any ideas
We have no idea your preferences. Give us a clue.

If you can describe the character you envision yourself playing as I'm sure the folks in #1045166392174972938 would be more than happy to provide inspiration and what class may fit best
Hello
Does anyone know think they can tell me a good site I can use to make a DND character on. Also I’m trying to get started playing with people. So if you’re thinking of adding anyone new to your group I’ll be happy to join.
D&D Beyond is the official digital toolset for character creation, so that's a popular choice.
If I’m level 4 and I level up to 5 how do I find the hit points to add to my maximum hit points?
So when I gain a hit die at level 2 I don’t use 2 dice to figure out hp?
You already know what your first hit die was. So now you use the second to find out how much to add on top of that. You don't reroll old hit dice, you just get 1 more.
hello all.. Day one noob here. Just wondering how do I find a group to play with?

Can you ever gain all of your hit dice back after a long rest?
You gain half after a long rest, but if you have half of them unspent, then you'd have them all ready for use.
Id gain the other half of my hit dice back?
Yep.
What if I have 7 hit dice. I spend 5 then take a long rest how many hit dice do I have?
5
At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them (minimum of one die). For example, if a character has eight Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest.
So you'd get three hit dice back, for a total of five.
(2 left + 3 recovered)
When you level up do you roll the hit die + con mod to change your max hp or do you add it to your current max hp
Yeah
As a general rule, you always round down unless something tells you otherwise.
Whenever you divide a number in the game, round down if you end up with a fraction, even if the fraction is one-half or greater.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#RoundDown
Is it possible to make a saving throw with a skill? What does it look like?
Saving throws and skills are separate.
What does an animal handling skill check look like?
That's up to you and the context. It could be trying to put out a vibe that's not threatening. It could be calming an animal with noises or gestures. There's no specific way it has to be conveyed.
When does the skill number come into play?
Could you rephrase? I don't know what you mean.
When there is any question whether you can calm down a domesticated animal, keep a mount from getting spooked, or intuit an animal’s intentions, the DM might call for a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. You also make a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check to control your mount when you attempt a risky maneuver.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AnimalHandling
What’s the point of having a number next to a skill?
It's your bonus.
It’s the amount you’d add to your d20 roll for an applicable ability check.
If the total equals or exceeds the DC for that check, you succeed.
The DC the DM sets.
Ah
DC is short for Difficulty Class.
Basically a measure of how hard the task is to complete.
(It’s not typically something the DM shares directly with the players.)
Vampires are allowed as characters right? if not I can change how my character is.
The closest official character option would be the Dhampir.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/706719-lineages#Dhampir
Ah, alright thank you I will probably change the race to an elf or goblin.
Always good to be flexible on character options, given what your DM may or may not allow.
When rolling for initiative is it d20 + Dex modifier + initiative on the character sheet?
No, the initiative IS what you add to the d20 to get your total.
So it’s just a d20 + initiative on character sheet?
Yes. Generally, it's just your Dex bonus, but some classes/subclasses/races allow other bonuses to apply.
I literally just said so above.
Usually it's your dexterity modifier. You add it to your d20 roll.
But some classes and races may add additional bonuses on top of that.
Unless you have an ability that adds another bonus.
Does it stack?
Different abilities stack if they have different names.
Statuses or bonuses with the same name generally do not stack.
Statuses and bonuses with different names generally can stack.
I say generally because the DM can decide what rules are in effect within a given context.
When it says the dm keeps track of minutes is that real minutes ?
I know that’s wrong
Generally no.
What is minutes in game time?
That could mean anything from real-world time, in-game time, or just taking game notes.
But generally I don't know of any DMs who keep track of time to that level.
It's usually in terms of combat: one round is six seconds. So certain abilities only last for so long.
Ah
Yeah, initiative and rounds happen at the slowest end of the time scale.
You mean fastest?
When you’ve “zoomed in” on time, so that seconds in game take longer than in real life.
Slow motion, basically
Om the other end, you might fast forward through days, weeks, years, or millennia in the blink of an eye IRL.
Combat
When combat happens - a creatures turn takes between 3-6 seconds of time
There are abilities that last for like a minute?
Yes, which would be ten rounds of combat.
yes - certain spells can last up to 10 minutes
A round happens in six seconds, which is all creatures’ turns.
Yes! Thanks for the clarification!
Each consecutive turn happens in the same six seconds.
Ok
Until everyone has gone, and then a new round starts.
A new 6 seconds?
Yeah
Initiative is just a way for the DM and players to manage combat and break it down to manageable units.
Again this is all abstracted - it's not literally 6 seconds of real world time.
It's just a game mechanic
Does anyone know how to use multiple lay on hands charges with the Avrae bot? When I use it it only lets me do one at a time
This would be best asked in #ddb-avrae-help

Can you actually make feats and traits in homebrew?
You can make basically anything in homebrew 😎
Can you be more specific? I don't really understand your question
How does constitution affect hit points and how are hit points detirmined during level up?
Your constitution modifier multiplied by your level is added to the total of the hit dice you rolled (or took the average of) each time you levelled up, with your starting hit points being the maximum value of your hit dice
So on each level up, you roll dice to determine how much extra hit points you gain?
So say you're a barbarian with a d12 hit dice and +3 constitution
At level 1 your hit points are 12 (max on a d12) +3 (cod mod x level)
You level up and decide to roll for additional hit points
You roll a d12 and get an 8
Your level 2 hit points are 20 (12+8) + 6 (cod mod x 2)
Or take the average, yeah
lvl 2 HP is 20 (12+8) + 6**
What do you mean by decide to roll for additional hit points? Is it an either or choice between two stats?
The base 5e rule is that when you level up, you take your average (rounded up) of your hit die. So for a wizard (d6 hit die), for example, you get 4 (average roll on a d6 rounded up) plus your Constitution modifier every time you level up. But some groups use a house roll where they roll their hit die every time they level up instead of using the average. So that same wizard would gain the result of a 1d6 roll plus their Constitution modifier every time they level.
you can decide on each lvl to either take the average or to roll
rolling risks you getting less than average BUT there's a chance you get MORE than average. taking average is more consistent and has no risk-for-reward
Oh ok, so the DM decides if you need to roll or not
yeah some DMs allow only one or the other
Ideally, the group would decide together how they want it to work. But technically, yes, it's up the DM to decide.
ty
Rules as written the player decides
The DM deciding would be a house rule
For example, for barbarian it says:
Hit Points
Hit Dice: 1d12 per barbarian level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 12 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d12 (or 7) + your Constitution modifier per barbarian level after 1st
Ok thanks, I was mostly confused on how constitution works for hit points, and my character ability scores were 6, 12, 14, 15, 15, 16 and I was trying to decide where to put the 6. Its a human sorcerer btw
It's important to know that if your constitution increases, that change is retroactive applied to your hit points
For example, say you're a barbarian with +3 con and you took the average at levels 2 through 5
Your hp would be 55 ((12 + 7 + 7 + 7 +7) + (3 x 5))
Ok I think I get that. So hit dice are based on class? So barbarians get d12's and other classes get different ones?
If your con mod then increased to +4, your hit points would immediately increase to 60 ((12 + 7 + 7 + 7 +7) + (4 x 5))
Correct
Alright that makes more sense
Thank you!
How low is too low for hit points on a sorcerer? At level 1
Probably like 7 or six
mine is a 4
Ur getting one shotted by a goblin at that point
6 in constitution is not advisable then right?
That's more of a #1045165827068002374 question
Ok sorry
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
S'all good
One more question, sorry. If I was to use a ray of frost on something, to actually deal damage it has to get past the armor right? So to do that is that a d20 + whatever modifier it uses then the damage is 1d10+ modifier? Those two dice rolls are separate right?
Yeah, you make an attack roll, and then if that hits you do damage.
Ok thank you
Hi all I’m from Australia 😁 my partner and myself have been looking at playing Dnd for ages now, unfortunately don’t live in a big community that has any games and are followers of some streaming Dnd groups. Any advice onto weither we should just bite the bullet and buy some books and gear and play DM and solo party or look for something in particular?
I know they aren’t as common here (since this server skews NA) but it’s possible to find a group close to your timezone - like Manila. Also a few people in NA work non-office hours so you might be able to find a group that way. You just need to be willing to play online!
For in-person games, have you tried local hobby/game shops? Sometimes they have bulletin or community boards that might be good to check out/advertise on.
There is a part of the handbook that covers what different stat numbers relate to in our world. I believe 8 was average. So 6 would be sickly, like Raistlin after the trials from Dragonlance.
But also, playing just solo can be fun too! I’ve heard a lot of success stories and I’m sure if you look for articles, some folks probably have great tips. ✌🏼
So better to put it somewhere else?
I’m in a small town with no shops like that haha
Ouch, seems harsh to get stuck with that number at all. The standard array would be far better to use if you have a 6 to distribute. If your goal is RP, a 6 can be an amazing start to developing a personality for your character. If your goal is combat, strength is where I would put it. But athletics checks are going to be a big problem.
With a 6 in strength, you likely really were the nerdy kid pushed around in school.
What is you start with money and dm decides to not give you a single shop
Then don't let it get stolen! Take what you get from corpses and make the best of it until a shop is available.
I can afford anything but I have grown up in a small community and my partner is prego so we moved back for an easy time 🙂
The rules don’t say anything about rolling a d20 for initiative check
The thing is, I have rerolled before, and this was WAY better than what is was
It falls under any check - you roll a d20, add any applicable modifiers and bonuses, and determine the result
So it’s like an ability check?
It follows the rules for checks in general - I wouldn’t classify it as an ability check specifically as it’s only used for initiative/combat usually
yeah, for all intents and purposes a skill check
it even benefits from Bard's Jack of All Trades
Heeeeyyyyyyyyyyyy what’s uuuuuuuuuuuup… ITS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
At the beginning of every combat, you roll initiative by making a Dexterity check.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Initiative
When combat starts, every participant makes a Dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
Fairly new to dnd, played three one-off story's with my friends (they are all nearing the end of their campaign curse of strand) for fun but considering character options for the next campaign.
I was thinking of doing a half elf multiclass 5lvls gloom stalker ranger with 15lvls assassin rogue
My thought behind this is that with gloom stalker I am invisible in dim light/darkness and do not become visible unless the light increases or by magical means so that means every attack would be a sneak attack plus at level 5 I get two attacks per turn which sorta negates the lvl 17 rogue death strike since I get basically the same feat at 5th level
And secondly with putting most levels in rogue I still get lots of rogue benefits like uncanny dodge, evasion, blindsense, etc. and increasingly extra dice for sneak attacks
Any thoughts on this?
Gloom stalker/assassin is a pretty well-known and effective combo (as I understand it). You can probably get more input from #1045165827068002374, though.
Cool thanks! I feel bad double posting but I'll copy/paste into that thread
When you have a component pouch do you just infinitely have spell components or do you have to actively look for and conserve components?
It depends on how your dm doesn't downtime in cities I usually charge my pcs 10 gold to buy all small things
RAW you just have spell components that arent consumed or have a cost.
The pouch is usually filled with all components you will need for spell. Most spells consume nothing to cast so there is no need to refill the bag. The only thing the bag wouldn't contain are those needed for a spell that consumes a material, such as a gold cost.
However you can get DM's that require you to roleplay getting specific ingredients, but that is something that should be relayed before you start playing, its not the base assumption of the rules.
So if you cast something like Sleep which has no gold cost, you wouldnt have to refill those components?
Correct

Thank you @smoky adder now can anyone tell me what does "Discord/DDB/A specific VTT system mean? lol
Discord is the way they communicate. DDB is DnD Beyond, where they are most likely keeping all their character sheets, and the specific virtual table top is what they use to play. Hope it helps.
thank you @lost notch, it sorta does. Ive only ever played dnd on roll20 and discord so do i just say that to answer the question?
Roll20 would be one of the VTT's. Beyond is there for easy access to making and keeping character sheets. If your answering an ad just let them know it's good with you. If they have another VTT listed, the game will be just played on that instead. It should be no issue.
Either wait or skim #looking-for-players and see if there's a game you want to join. If you find one, reach out to the person who posted.
okay thank you!
When you dodge, how do you figure out the dexterity check?
What is a dexterity saving throw?
Yes
The target number for an ability check or a saving throw is called a Difficulty Class (DC).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#3Comparethetotaltoatargetnumber
Is there any equipment like condition rings or measurements you need to play first time?
It's first time GM for me and the group are all newbies without any experience in PnP. We are beginning with strahd campaign.
So besides dice and books. What would you recommend for a new inexperienced GM?
You don't need much besides the rules, character sheets, and dice (all available digitally for free). Maps, minis, and tokens aren't necessary.
You’ve got everything you need you can play theatre of the mind for battle maps but if you need a visual reference a chessboard and chest pieces works fine
Or coins, snacks, whatever is on hand.
Since we play offline so nobody is sidetracked by the girlfriends or mom's we want to play offline. So all physical. Just wonder it would be easier for all of us, especially me 🙂
Oh theatre of the mind is you just describing the battle area, wrapping paper is a cheap battle map to most of it now has a grid printed on the inside
That all depends on your personal definition of easy. 😅
Theater of the mind is easy because you don't have to buy/make props or set anything up.
Here's a primer on theater of the mind (TOTM): https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/355-how-to-run-combat-in-the-theater-of-the-mind
Playing on a grid is easy because it gives everyone a shared visual layout.
If you think a grid is best for your group, go for it.
I ran in-person once, and my players and I all used devices—they had their character sheets and I had access to my notes and statblocks. Having all that in paper form would have been a challenge.
Yeah character on phones and apps is great to save on space but for your character on the table go basic, sheet of paper with a grid, chess board, bottle lids anything will do really
if i want to do dnd online is there anything i should prep myself with before hand because the only thing i have is a character sheet on ddb
As a player? Know the rules and how your abilities work, at least overall.
alright 👍
So i've been slowly getting sourcebook physical copies. I've got a ton on DNDBeyond, but I'm wanting to grab some physical copies. Should I grab the monster manual and Monsters of the multiverse? or just use DNDbeyond for those as reference? Just wondering how much I could benefit from those being right in front of me compared to books with rules like the players handbook, Tasha's, and Xanathar's....
Are you a player or DM?
Going to be starting as a DM for a group of friends.
I find being able to CTRL+F much easier, though I do love physical books. MM and MotM are both good to have if you already have the PHB, Tasha's, and Xanathar's. Should probably have the DMG too.
I think digital versus physical really depends on what works for you.
Hi All,
I’m new to DND. Where’s best to start before jumping into a game?
Yea. I've got the DMG, as well as a few other books, but I wasn't sure on MotM and the MM because I wasn't sure how often i'd need to refer back to them in game compared to figuring out a rule.

Probably not as often? But since the MM is part of the core books and MotM is part of the expanded rules set, I'd feel odd with that gap in the collection. That's me, though.
That's fair. I'll probably grab the MM at least just to have it, and maybe decide later on MotM. Thanks 🙂
Thanks!
hey so I'm pretty new and I was wondering how does resistance work like as a barbarian during rage you'd be resistant to bludgeoning piercing and slashing dmg types but what does that actually mean like how much less am I affected by said damage types
You take half damage so if say 20 slashing damage you take 10
okay thanks that'll be very helpful I'll keep it in mind
Round down on odd numbers so 23 becomes 11
okay bet thank you
Isn’t there a section for firearms in the DM’s guide?
And, if so, where?
yes it should say in the index if i remember correctly
I do remember its a little closer to the end
Thank you.
267-268, but I don't have the book with me ATM to confirm.
I’m looking to clear up a question about spellcasting in general.
Can a wizard for example cast say burning hands on his turn (let’s say the wizard won initiative and attacks first) … can he then cast shield after a creature he’s facing attacks him in the same round? I know shield is a reaction to cast but it’s still a spell… and from my experience you can only cast one spell per turn regardless. I know you can cast a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action and shield (or misty step or counter spell) in the same round. Any clarifying info on this would be greatly appreciated.
So this would generally be suited for #dnd-rules instead of newcomers, but to answer your question:
The limiting factor to multiple spells per turn is based on if you have cast a spell using your Bonus Action or not. The basic rules covers this in the spell casting chapter.
A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
So if you use your Action to cast a spell of first level or higher you couldn’t use your Bonus Action, but you could still use your Reaction to, say, counter spell or cast shield.
If you’ve cast a spell using your Bonus Action then you are limited to cantrips only for the remainder of that turn.

¯_(ツ)_/¯
Do i still need to buy the player handbook in dnd beyond if i have a physical copy of the handbook because im making a bard and some spells dont pop up
No
Then how do I access the hidden spells?
You can use DDB's homebrew tools to create the things you need - just takes a lot of effort (and you can't publish it because copyright and all that - but you can still use it for your own personal use).
Or you can join a DDB campaign with content sharing enabled.
Or you can buy just the races/classes/items/spells that you need via DnDBeyond (they sell things a la carte)
... or you can buy the DnDBeyond version of the book you want/need.
But back in the day DnDBeyond was a separate company from Wizards of the Coast/D&D and so buying physical did not grant you a digital license.
It still doesn't except via specific bundles you can buy through Wizards of the Coast's online store.
You’re welcome!
how do i play with people exactly lol
So how much do you know about D&D so far?
as good as nothing to be honest
i know its mostly a game you make of it i guess? and that you roll dice for movesets and then that says if you do something or not
Okay - so the first thing I'd recommend is taking a look at the pinned message here in this channel.
It has lots of useful links to help get you started - including the free basic rules.
I recommend giving the rules a read-through/skim and then watch some of the videos. Also there are livestreams of folks playing D&D that can help give you an idea of how the game actually plays out. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel here on the server.
sounds good. thank you! this is all very incredibly overwhelming lol. it seems like there is a crap tonne of stuff that just seems downright hard to learn lol.
As far as playing with folks - you can use the #looking-for channels to find a group to play with.
Many groups are fine taking on new players - especially if those players show they are willing to learn.
oh awesome!
Yeah this isn't a simple 1-page rulebook game - but it's tons of fun!
seems like it, i love fantasy stuff, choose your own adventure type stuff and just everything seems very appealing
Basically the Dungeon Master (DM) sets the scene and explains the problem at hand. Then the players, playing characters, tell the DM what their characters would do in that situation. The DM decides what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed. The players make the dice rolls and the DM interprets the results. And that continues in a social collaborative story-telling fashion so everyone, DM and players, have fun exploring the story.
that sounds like a tonne of fun lol
Yeah its very fun! Like my rogue managed to rescue two kids captured by some hags by lighting fire to their windmill lair, escaping out through the roof of the windmill and by tying myself onto the vanes of the windmill to drop down near the ground. But it was a close call because the drop hurt (lost hit points) and at the end of it, my character was on 1 hit point, barely standing.
How do I start playing dnd
Well like most games, it helps to read the rules! Check the pinned message here in this channel for links to the free basic rules and lots of other useful info to help get you started.
I know like basic basics but nothing else past that
eventful, kinda excited to start

There are several character sheet options - my preferred one is to use DnDBeyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Then there's the standard pen and paper versions: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
And then many Virtual Table Tops (VTT) have tools to manage a character sheet as well - but usually if you use those tools the DM/group will help you figure that out.
oh awesome, yeah i found the dnd beyond one, got scared it was a pc download thing lol
Well they have a mobile app if you need/want to have your stuff on you at all times. Otherwise it's all online via the web app.

oh thats actually neat as hell
You could use either #750812887697588356 if you want to post your avilability
#looking-for-players is DMs looking for players - just message the poster (or respond in their thread) to indicate interest in their game.
#looking-for-community is online D&D servers that may run games

Yes
Click it - it will take you to Dyno.
Dyno requires you to verify your Discord account (basically Dyno needs to know you're a user on this server)
You will then access a form - fill it out (make sure to put your date and time of your game - too many people leave this vague)
Dyno takes that info and creates a post in the specified channel - it also creates a thread attached to that post.
Players can then ask questions, get clarification by posting in the thread.
And that's how you post in the #looking-for channels
Ahhhh I see
You can only post once every 7 days in a channel - wait until Dyno removes your previous post before posting again.
what die do i use for ability scores
4 d6 dice, drop lowest dice roll
ohhhhh that makes sense
oh sweet thanks
The other ways to generate your ability scores also include standard array (a preset of numbers that you can plugin to your abilities or point buy.
Many times DMs will require you to roll with them watching.
Other DMs require standard array.
And some allow point-buy.
And then there are some who use some other method.
Anyhow, I got to go - have fun and happy D&D'ing!
tysm for all the help!
Question, does the lore support an elf raised by vikings?
“The lore” is a long and complicated topic. 😅
For starters, there are several different canonical settings, each with their own history.
But every individual table is ultimately its own individual thing.
So it’s entirely possible for your game to have an elf raised by vikings.
i dont know what the fff-frick is going on
ive never been this confused ever at something
now im trying to host a game that isnt hosted by an 11 year old or one that takes place at like 5am EST LOL
@smoky adder can please help 👉👈🥺
What kind of help are you looking for, specifically?
is there a better way to find a game? like a forum where i can look for people in my time zone that also are maybe a bit more in my age range lol
maybe not age range just not significantly younger
ive seen more than enough posts that are 13-14 YO only
In addition to the LFG channels here, you can check various Discords, MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.

What are monster stat blocks 😭
they are like the character sheets for creatures/monsters. tells you their stats and abilities, plus any special things they can do.
where can i make/find these, i use dnd beyond for my character
but i dunno what to use for that
you only need them if you are going to DM for people. Players shouldn't peek at the blocks of creatures they are battling
cuz im dming ppl
how does ur strength matter in combat btw
tbh i've watched many videos but haven't read anything

Strength is used on melee weapons, mainly (though melee weapons listed as finesse can use Strength or Dexterity) It acts as a modifier, increasing the dice roll on Hit Checks and Damage rolls.
But yeah, Dunl's not wrong. readings the basic rules, at least, is pretty important to have a successful time DMing. Its unfortunately kinda unavoidable.
From loot you find during the course of the adventure (or selling said loot to a merchant).

what are some of the best apps for making battle maps
Dungeondraft is my personal favourite

Hello everyone im having a little trouble making a character sheet I tried looking for tutorials on YouTube but none are really making sense to me I would love it if someone could help me out thank you
Are you doing it online or irl. And if online which site?
So it's just wotc content only and no homebrew
And that allows compatability for you character to be in different AL campaigns??
AL has its own player’s guide that details what you can and can’t use to have an AL compatible character.
OK
It's just quite confusing.
Thanks for explaining
Id I make an attack roll. What is an example of modifiers I can attack to the roll?
Do I add a strength nodifier?
Generally you would add your proficiency modifier if you are proficient with the weapon you are using, as well as the appropriate mod (generally either DEX or STR) depending on the kind of weapon you’re using.
Have you read the basic rules?
Yes
It's covered in the actions in combat section
Dang it Davyd you win this time.
When rolling for damage after a hit is made do I roll another d20?
What do I do with this attack bonus on an weapon?
It doesn’t explain when to use an attack bonus
When you make an attack, your attack roll determines whether the attack hits or misses. To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits. The AC of a character is determined at character creation, whereas the AC of a monster is in its stat block.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ModifierstotheRoll
Ability Modifier. The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule.
Some spells also require an attack roll. The ability modifier used for a spell attack depends on the spellcasting ability of the spellcaster.
Proficiency Bonus. You add your proficiency bonus to your attack roll when you attack using a weapon with which you have proficiency, as well as when you attack with a spell.
So where the attack bonus?
Attack bonus isn't a term in the game
"attack bonus" is a bit vague.
There's your to hit bonus, which is the stuff defined above; ability modifier + proficiency
It’s on the character sheet
Where?
On the D&D Beyond character sheet it has a column for your to hit bonus (or save DC)
Ah, on the paper sheets, yeah
There's a column that says ATK BONUS
That's the modifiers linked above
That would be the number you add to the d20, to see if it beats the creature's AC
I’m trying to share a picture but I can’t
you won't be able to, yeah. Davyd can, because he's a mod
you don't need to link to the character sheet
The attack bonus is right next to name of weapon on character sheet
Next to damage/type
Yes, I realised here
Ok. So when do I add the attack bonus?
As Colossus said, when you roll to hit a creatures AC, that is the number to add to the result.
I think he’s going off the hit bonus in some other version of the game
Not the attack bonus of a wrap
Weapon
There is no wrap weapon
I think wrap was just a typo
"to hit bonus" and "attack bonus" are the same thing
I think "attack bonus" only appears on the paper character sheet
How do I figure out the attack bonus of a weapon ?
You've had that explained you multiple times
I even quoted the rule just a few minutes ago
I must have missed it
While this channel exists to help newcomers, there comes a point where asking questions that can be more efficiently answered by reading the rules becomes disruptive
I would recommend you read through the various sections of the rules linked above
It’s proficiency bonus plus strength modifier if it’s a melee weapon
Its your Strength or Dexterity modifier (depending on the type of weapon. The default is strength.) plus your Proficiency Bonus. Plus any additional bonuses the weapon might have from being a magic weapon
Dex if ranged weapon
or a finesse weapon like a rapier
Dex for finesse weapons?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
Finesse. When making an attack with a finesse weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls.
Thrown. If a weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon to make a ranged attack. If the weapon is a melee weapon, you use the same ability modifier for that attack roll and damage roll that you would use for a melee attack with the weapon. For example, if you throw a handaxe, you use your Strength, but if you throw a dagger, you can use either your Strength or your Dexterity, since the dagger has the finesse property.
Versatile. This weapon can be used with one or two hands. A damage value in parentheses appears with the property--the damage when the weapon is used with two hands to make a melee attack.
Your choice
Ah
Hello all, I'm really new to this. I have a rulebook and 3 sets of dice. What else do I need for my first game? Also, does this discord allow new players in the looking for players section? Thank you.
Yes, new players are welcome throughout the server. As for what you need, are you the DM or a player?
Hola hay gente latina?
then you have more than enough, even you could say that you are overprepared XD
You’ll be fine with access to the rules, dice, and your character sheet.
I couldn't pick a set so I got a few. They're kinda expensive here though ngl
Check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
yes, but this is an english server. You can find spanish speaking communities in facebook, reddit etc
Thank you everyone!
dice sets prices depends mostly on the seller, you can get some pretty expensive ones, but if you search you can get them for cheap (but they might take longer to arrive, or be of lower quality)
Oh, I see. I just got some resin ones because they look nice
Hiya! I'm Nugget :3 I'm still a noob when it comes to D&D but it's nice to meet you all
My husband is the real expert
Hello all been playing for a few years on and off but still feel like a noob at times
Hi! Just started this game with my hubby and two sons. We are playing an "intro" campaign that was supposed to take 1hr...I need to read more on it to get us unstuck...
What intro campaign?
guessing you are the DM? by the intro campain do you refer to "The Lost Mines of Phandelver"?
No! Hubby is DM this round, and our kids are young. We are playing "The Cursed Amulet"
As a general rule of player edict, you shouldn't be reading the adventure notes if you are not the DM. Thats a pretty major no-no
It's tough to run a game within a specific timeframe, even for experienced DMs. But if everyone's having fun, then you're all doing it right.
not to mention that specially with new players/DMs things might slow down, from indecision, to having to read the module/notes, to going off the main plotline because they wanted to follow Boblin the goblin
When my squad tried to run Mines of phan, we ended up convincing all the goblins to join us then 1 by 1 helped them all fufill their dream jobs. Best campaign i ever played
btw new to server, my application is in looking for dms
alright thanks for the advice

Hello, Can anyone tell me what is an Tallman check? (I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing it right or if its in the basic rule book.pdf.) Also, can anyone help me which pages/chapters that are important to cover when the session is starting. I know that all in chapter 7 is important but what other chapter's or page to read up on before I start D&D session 1 this evening?
What's "tallman"?
Are you posting via voice to text?
Chapter 7 of the Basic Rules has the section on Ability Checks:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityChecks
I mean't a tillman check.
Can you copy and paste what you're trying to refer to?
There's no such thing as "tillman check"
I'm sorry i am not sure why I put tillman check. it's something starts with a t.
a skill check or a abilty check?
This is Chapter 7. Go through it and copy what you're trying ask.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingAbilityScores
Being vague isn't going to help us to give you an answer.
A skill check is done when your character attempts to use an ability/skill. Player rolls 1d20 and attempts to beat a certain DC #, determined by the DM.
DC = difficulty check
And if my answer isn't perfect I'll be corrected by someone, but that's essentially the gist of it.
technically speaking, "skill check" is not an official term. Its just a short hand thats commonly used to refer to an ability check that you can apply a skill proficiency to
Thats a very pedantic thing to correct someone on, since almost everyone says "skill check" but if you are trying to find the exact rules for something in the book, you'd need to use the right terminology
what if I am a DM
how do I do it
cause, our DM just as knowledgable as person who first got their starter set on cristmas
you just give yourself poisons if you're the DM
whatever you want, in whatever quantity you want, at whatever price you want
maybe make a black market for poisons or extract it from poisones creatures
Glad to see you stepping up for your group! I love it. So, you want to know how/when a skill check is done?
this man understands me
where players should get poisons?
thieves guild? shady merchants?
how do players find them?
not me actually, but dear friend of mine, I learn this game for 3 years and still don't understand most things
sure those all sound good
What you're referring to as a skill check is usually done when a player character attempts to use one of their abilities/skills, like a Rogue attempting to pick pocket a suspected rube, the DM would then come up with a difficulty number for that player to roll against. You can give any number from 1-20. The player then rolls 1d20 to try and beat that number. If they do, the action succeeds. If they don't, the action fails.
Sounds like a good time to apply a rogue’s Thieve’s Cant to secretly talk with some shady merchants and buy from their more illicit stock.
or a poisoner's guild, an apocatheary, a druid circle
sure, but how do players find them?
That would be up to you, the DM.
whichever one you want
I forgot to mention that the player should add any applicable modifiers to that roll.
How illegal/difficult to access are poisons in your world?
players just ask me to spawn poison shop in front of them?
I mean, if you want to do that, you can
we don't have a world rn, we are trying to understand how do create one
what makes the most sense to you?
that's the problem - nothing makes sense
hmm
That’d be the easiest way for sure. Other methods would be to suggest they seek out a Druid or their local apothecary.
if you are just creating a world a poison shop would be the least of your concerns i think
This may be better suited for #dm-discussion
do you have a general idea of what might make more sense?
and yeah this is a dm discussion question
well, think about how people would get poisons in real medieval times, and do something similar to that, or give it a fantasy twist
you can also just do the poison shop and be done with it, there's nothing wrong with that
Hello guys 'n galls. I'm new here and I'm searching for players or someone who needs players (I look to join/start a campaign in general, I don't mind if I'm PC or DM). But I'm a bit confused with how the groups works... Can someone help?

Ok, the links were what I was looking for. Thanks a bunch!
Yes
They would take fire damage.
If I were the DM, I'd say that character would instantly die. Because they fell in lava. But that's just me, your DM may offer some kind of... not death... answer for that character.
Lava has an actual damage set in 5e, I think it may differ probably in the books, but I know it exists.
So yes real life, fall in Lava is instant death but D&D, it is but a day at the office.
The DMG suggest 18d10 damage for being submerged in lava.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#ImprovisingDamage
Yeah in DiA its 18d10 if your submerged and 6d10 first time you start your turn there.
How do u determine what ability goes with a saving throw ?
the spell or feature will say, bla bla bla "if resisted by an X saving throw", or the DM will make a judgment call and call for whatever attribute they think appropriate
so just apply whichever fits the situation better
Strength is how hard you can throw a tomato
Dex is how well you can dodge tomatoes
Con is how many tomatoes you can eat before dying
Int is knowing tomatoes are fruits
Wisdom is knowing tomatoes don't belong in fruit salad
Cha is how well you can sell a tomato

For a zombie attack called slam, it says hit: 4 (d6+1). Is that 4 times (d6+1)?
Ahhh
(relating to the last question) when it says "claws melee weapon attack +13 to hit, reach 10ft one target hit 16 (2d8+7) slashing damage" what does "+13 to hit" mean?
Sorry, was working. While I know that, we have an interesting set of circumstances. I only know the basics of what is coming if he NEEDS to tell me, so the kids can learn. Haven't read the whole campaign by any means, hence us being stuck 🙃
when it says + to hit, it means that whenver you roll to see if you hit or not you add that number, so in your case if you roll a 10 you would get a 23! so you would hit anything that has an AC of 23 or lower
when you use an attack, you do the following
1-designate a target: in this case it is specifically One Target within 10ft as described in the attack
2-roll to hit: 1d20+attack modifier. this means you roll a 20-sided die and add the attack modifier.
attack modifier="to hit". when it says "+13 to hit" that means the attack modifier is +13.
so when your roll to hit with this attack, you roll 1d20+13. lets say you get a 10 on the d20. that makes for 10+13=23
a roll made to hit is also called an "attack roll" btw.
so, what does that 23 mean? well, when you "roll to hit". you compare the total you got (our 23 in this case) to the target's AC. AC=Armor Class.
if the number you got on the attack roll (the 23) is equal to-or higher than the target's AC, that means the attack hits successfully. and you proceed to roll damage (2d8+7 in this case) and subtract the damage from the target's HP.
if the attack's total is lower than the target's AC, the attack misses, and the target suffers no damage from it.
anything that has an AC of 23 or lower*
meets it=beats it
yup, typo in there

Assuming you're playing online, you don't need much beyond a means of communicating—Discord or Zoom work just fine. I don’t understand what they mean when they say you make a strength (athletics) check with a DC set by a strength (athletics) or Dexterity (acrobatics) check that the target makes in response (the target chooses the ability to use)
You're talking about grappling, correct?
Yes
It means the creature making the grapple makes a Strength (Athletics) check which is contested by the target making their choice of a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. If the grappler rolls higher, they successfully grapple the target. If the target rolls equal or higher, they successfully avoid being grappled
It's called a contested check; one where both sides roll (rather than one side rolling against a fixed DC). The side that rolls highest wins, and if there is a tie, nothing changes
Ability (Skill) means "Roll a d20, add your modifier for the Ability, and then if you have proficiency in the Skill, add your proficiency bonus as well"
For example Strength (Athletics) means "Roll a d20, add your Strength modifier, then if you have proficiency in Athletics, add your proficiency bonus to the roll as well"
Many people will just refer to this in layman's terms as an "athletics check"
or (insert skill here) check
Add strength modifier when they ask for an athletics check?
If it's a Strength (Athletics) check, yes
What do you mean the athletics value?
The number by the skill on the character sheet
That's just the default ability modifier plus your proficiency bonus if you're proficient
Say you have a +4 Dexterity modifier and a +3 Proficiency bonus, and you're proficient in Acrobatics but not in Sleight of Hand
Your Acrobatics skill on the sheet will say +7 (+4 Dexterity Modifier + 3 Proficiency Bonus) but your Sleight of Hand will say +4 (Just your +4 Dexterity Modifier, no proficiency bonus)
So as far as the monster is concerned he’s just making a straight up Dex modifier check with no skill check?
To see if proficient
If the monster doesn't have proficiency in the skill listed, yeah
Understand that a DM can call for skill checks using different Abilities if they want. It's not the typical, simple method, but is wholly within the rules.
Monster stat blocks only list the skills they're proficient in, if it's not listed you use their ability modifier
That's beyond the scope of this channel; per the descriptions, this channel is for the basics
Getting into optional and variant rules is more #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion territory, to avoid confusing things
Sure. Just trying to provide context
Monsters don’t have proficiencies in any skill
Some do
They don’t even have skills
Again, some do
For example, an acolyte is proficient in Medicine and Religion https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16763-acolyte
Shambling mound has proficiency in Stealth
https://www.dndbeyond.com/search?q=shambling mound
You can see how that works, their proficiency bonus is +2
Their Wisdom is +2 so their Wisdom (Medicine) is +4
Their intelligence is +0 so their Intelligence (Religion) is +2
Shambling mound has a Stealth of +2, but it's Dex is -1, therefore, it's getting a +3 from proficiency bonus.
The "Skills" section on a stat block will be omitted if the monster does not have any skills. Many creatures do not have any, so I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't seen it before. But you can see a few examples linked above. Its important to keep an eye out for it whenever you're reading a creature's stat block
Wouldn’t it be 1?
3-1=2
So it’s 2 not 3?
DMGrognerd didn't say it was 3, they said it was 2
-1, 0, +1 +2
See, right here
Dex = -1, Stealth = +2.
-1 + 3 = 2
-1 + 2 = 1
all this is just specific to this one monster btw. Don't get too caught up in the weeds (no pun intended)
A shambling mound is a plant creature, hence the pun.
(Basically a living compost heap)
So if I make a grapple with strength modifier does the monster choose Dex or strength to check against it?
Whichever it wants (is higher)
It's whatever it's Str (athletic) or Dex (acrobatics) is higher.
Against a zombie
hello
Hello
Against a zombie would be Str (assuming the zombie even tried to break the grapple)
So I roll a d20 and add the strength modifier for the zombies roll?
well, the DM does, but yeah
Yeah
Ok
Sorry another question. When there are say 3 zombies doe each one make a separate turn or do they act as one unit and attack alltogether?
I can see a zombie not even trying to break the grapple, since a grappled creature can still attack, I think it would be more likely to do that.
Each zombie has it's own attacks.
Given that, many DMs choose to have all creatures of a given type attack/act on the same initiative.
For the attacks, yes
No, you'd roll once for each zombie, since zombies have one attack
thats what they said
That confuses me
ah, got it. Early morning, plus lack of punctuation got me misreading
they misread your message. You were correct
I misread your comment. You're correct. You roll three times, once for each zombie.
Ok
There are variant rules in the DMG for handling large groups of monsters at once, instead of rolling for each, but thats not important to worry about when first starting out. Most veteran players don't even use those rules
Yeah, this channel isn't the place for getting into variant/optional rules
If someone dies in battle and the monsters were killed does the person who died automatically revive?
Nope
If you die, then you die.
There are some magic spells which can revive a dead person.
Are you referring to a character actually dying, or just dropping to 0 HP? The answer is "no" in both cases, but you can come back from being at 0 HP eventually. Death is a little more permanent
If you don't have access to one of those spells, then you hope your party hauls your lifeless corpse to someone who does, otherwise, you're dead, game over for that character.
Dropping to 0 HP isn't death, it's unconsciousness, which then requires you to start making death saving throws.
Do you make the death saving throws outside of battle?
A death save is a constitution saving throw with a DC of 10.
You have to make 3 successes before you make 3 failures.
if you are still at 0 HP, yes
0 HP is 0 HP, regardless of how you got there.
Fall off a cliff? Goblin shanks you? Same difference if you're now at 0 HP.
What’s rhe dc on a death saving throw ?
10
Ah
So, it's not hard to pass your death saves.
and you add nothing to the roll. Its just a d20, and nothing else
However, if you roll a Nat 1, it counts as two failed rolls.
If you roll a Nat 20, then you stabilize and don't have to make any more death saves.
If you roll a Nat 20, you gain 1 HP, which means you are conscious, not just stable
Yeah, my bad, not Con roll
Sorry another question. What would be a relevant ability modifier on a critical hit
a critical hit does not change what ability modifier you use in any way
its whatever it would be normally
What would it be normally
Attack rolls are fixed. If you're using a melee weapon, it's Str, if a ranged weapon it's Dex.
depends on what you used to make that attack
(Unless you're using a melee weapon that has the finesse property, in which case you can use Str or Dex)
So I attack with a 1d4 with a dagger what would be a relevant ability modifier that id add to the attack?
If it's a crit with a spell attack, then it's whichever Ability is your Spellcasting Ability for your class.
dagger has the finesse property, so its your choice of either strength or dex
Add an ability modifier to the attack?
You add your Attack Bonus to the attack roll, which is the relevant Ability Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus (assuming you're proficient in the weapon you're attacking with)
When you make an attack roll, you add the ability modifier, and the proficiency bonus (if you are proficient with that weapon)
When you make a damage roll, you add the ability modifier you added to the attack roll
So, if you're proficient in that dagger you're attacking with, then you add your Str (or Dex) mod + Prof Bonus.
Damage roll adds the Ability Modifier, but not the Prof Bonus.
so when attacking with a dagger, at level 1 (+2 PB) with 18 dexterity (+4 Dex), you'd roll 1d20+4+2 to hit, and 1d4+4 for damage
Though your character sheet has a space for Attack Bonus for each weapon on it, so you don't have to do all the math each time you make an attack.
(And if you're using a VTT, the computer will just do the math for you)
Attack bonus is proficiency bonus + Dex modifier?
If the weapon has the finesse property, or if its a ranged weapon, yes
Attack Bonus = Proficiency Bonus + (whichever ability modifier is appropriate for the weapon)
Melee weapons = Str (unless the weapon has the finesse property, in which case you can use Str or Dex)
Ranged weapons = Dex
Ah
So:
Longsword = Str
Bow = Dex
Dagger (has finesse) = Str or Dex
Most melee weapons don't have the finesse property.
So to recap. I make an attack with proficiency bonus and an ability modifier depending on the weapon type. Then I do damage with the 1d4 dagger with an attack bonus?
Only with ability modifier
the damage roll is 1d4 + Str or Dex (whichever one you used for that attack roll). Do not add your Proficiency Bonus to a damage roll
(and some other modifiers like Rage bonus, but this is specific variants)
The attack bonus is only applied to the attack roll, not to the damage roll
Attack Bonus = Proficiency Bonus + Ability Modifier
When you make a damage roll, you add the Ability Modifier only
Damage roll = weapon damage and ability modifier?
1d4 + ability modifier if a dagger?
Yes
Since a dagger is a finesse weapon, you can choose between STR or DEX for that ability modifier.
(Other game features might also give you other choices or add other bonuses.)
Handbooker Helper tutorial videos on weapons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAm3WEpwjI
That's a great video. Very helpful.
Watch the entire series...
@left thorn you want #1029833015423143957, this channel is for the very basics of being started
(also no spoilers please, or multi posting)
I, myself, would be hesitant to just offer magic items of any kind at a store. Unless they were incredibly expensive...
I didn’t put any spoilers, but I thought this would be a good question here. Thanks though.
Magic items, in my opinion, should rare. And earned, not bought.
Again, not a topic for this channel
That handbooker helper episode didn’t explain weapons at all
Is there anything else unclear about weapons? I'd be happy to try and help.
At the beginning the rogue starts with two daggers. How many weapons can be equipped at any one time? And can you choose which weapon to use at will?
Can a dagger and a bow be equipped at the same time?
And it u throw a dagger is the dagger lost forever?
You cannot equip a bow and dagger at the same time.
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
I don't know the "official" ruling on getting a thrown weapon back. I usually take circumstances into account at my table, and allow weapon retrieval if conditions allow.
How about Shield and crossbow? And what about reloading?
On my example character sheet there’s a greataxe and javelin equipped at the same time
Any two handed weapon wouldn't allow anything else to also be equipped. Including a shield.
So no crossbow and shield.
Crossbow is a two handed, ah. Thought only bows were
Hmm... Interesting.
Oh and what about giants with the Berserker I think? Don't they get a dual weild on heavy weapons?
I'm not sure on the giants. Would need to look that up.
If the monster stat block says to hit +7 on an ability is that for the attack roll or the damage roll?
I mean actions not ability
Do you read the stuff in the rules at all?
Everything in the statblocks have been calculated already for you.
to hit is the attack roll
Ok
Bows are two-handed
thats what they said
You asked this last night.
It was explained to you that "to hit" and "attack roll" is the same thing.
I don’t think I did
We did have a discussion on this yesterday.
Davyd explained it to you.
What works with Prone targets vs ranged, if the target is big? Still a disadvantage?
Am I in trouble?
Have you heard of the boy who cried wolf?
prone doesnt care about size, RAW. though DMs might rule otherwise
Dropping prone is to help avoid being hit, so using ranged weapons on prone targets isn't the best idea. I'm not saying don't do it ever.
Hm. Interesting.
Yeah they didn’t believe the boy when there was a real wolf. How does that apply?
I think I already have a few builds on mind. Berserker if I get two high rolls, high constitution + Dex, plus the race bonus, and a shield. That'd basically shoot my armor rating high. I also noticed Magic missiles is one of the best spells on lv 1. Am I right about these two things? (Charisma being the best stat for adventure/story, and going with +2 charisma on race. And magic missiles being the best lv1 spell.)
Not all DMs ask you to roll for stats.
And what's the best level 1 spell is probably much debated as anything else in D&D.
I see. Fair enough. And how do multi-classes work?
Hi I am new :D
If you have a specific question beyond what's in the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing), the advice can be more specific.

Alrighty!
there is a game on to go, it will start 30 min from now if u want to jojne
I read the entire players handbook
Read it again. And again.

Watch the Handbooker Helper videos. They're easier to digest.
Watch actual plays of the game.
Yes. Watching people play is also a good way to learn.
Are you planning to DM it or be a player?
Then you need to find someone to DM the adventure. In the meantime, read the rules.

Hey i have a question, i got some dnd yt videos recommend and it seems fun, but i don't want to read a whole book just to understand the rules. Is the entire players handbook actually full of important stuff or is there like a shortened pdf with just the necessary things?
The pinned comment in the channel has instructions.
The Basic Rules are available for free, and they omit some of the PHB content. It's still a good amount of reading, though.
Ok cool thanks

I am a newbie and I have zero books or anything DnD related. I have been using DnD Beyond for my character but I was wanting to know is there a better site to build characters without having to pay for the books through dnd beyond, or should I buy physical copies instead and use paper only?

I'm pretty new to D&D, here recently I figured out enough to make my own Homebrew Campaign. It's based on MHA with a couple of my friends, we do it online.
But during this campaign, I'd like one of their quirks to try to deceive them. What would they roll to be able to try and see if it's lying or not?

I clicked on looking for dm but I can't post my message
Thanks!
The material in the Basic Rules is freely available. Beyond that, you'll need to purchase material either physically or digitally. D&D Beyond is the official digital toolset and you're paying for the convenience of having the sources all in one place, plus you can share the content digitally. There aren't any other sites to build characters legally without paying for content.
Read the message I posted
All the information is right there
I did and i clicked the looking for a dm, but i donno what to do next, should i message the bot?
Click this form?
See the bit after each channel description it says "to post in this channel, fill out this form" and "this form" is a link?
There is a link provided that'd take you to the bot page. Enter your info there.
Tnx i was bit sus about it
The form is a Dyno form, which is a trusted platform that this server has been using for years
I understand that I need to purchase books and stuff. I am just wanting to know if DnD beyond has more value than physical books or if there is another way to create characters online that I would just need the physical books to be able to create characters?
i finally have the opportunity to join a dnd group at my local library should i join it? ive been wanting to play for a while but just never got the chance
thank you
Joining a D&D group might be awkward if you don't know them. And even worse if you don't get along with them. xD But sure, nothing ventured, nothing gained
i know two of the people there one of them is my friend who i ride the bus to school with
What has more value is really up to you. D&D Beyond has searchability and all-in-one access that can be scattered across multiple books. Plus, lugging a bunch of real booksaround can be a hassle. But I love print, so I like physical books. If you buy the books, you can reproduce it privately as homebrew in DDB, but that's an added investment of time and energy.
Go for it
Go for it. Most of the people I know that play D&D don't judge, and are pretty expressive. So don't be afraid of expressing yourself.
Thank you, what books would be more worth me having right now?
Are you a player or the DM?
Then all you really need is the Player's Handbook. (Technically, you don't even need to buy that; the Basic Rules are free.) If you haven't played yet, I'd recommend using the Basics before investing money into the hobby; no sense spending if you're not sure you like it.
Ok thank you, so far I have only been using the basic rules to create my character and was just wondering if I should have one of the books.
Just a suggestion, but I'd wait until you try it before you buy it. Consider the Basic Rules as a really robust demo. The PHB (plus DMG and MM) is the core full game, and the other books are DLC.
Ok then I'll wait before I do anything more. Thank you for your help!
Hope you have a good time!
Is 8 hp a common amount for a level 1 wizard?
When fighting 3 zombies the zombies seem overpowered against a level 1 wizard
That's a pretty lopsided fight, yes.
That wizard is going die and I don't even need to look at the encounter builder to tell you that
Heh. The side with more turns/actions is likely to win in D&D. It's not a hard-and-fast rule, just a general pattern.
So three zombies vs. one wizard? That wizard's toast.
At level 1, anyway.
In the starter set the dragons of whatever the first encounter is with 3 zombies
But to dunl's point, it should be a group, not one player character.
Yes, but that assumes ~4 PCs, which makes it a hard fight, not a very deadly one. (Note: guessing 4 PCs as that seems to be standard size WotC design for)
Usually the adventure says something to the effect of "optimized for 4-7 player characters" in the introductory matter.
Sometimes the DM will allow a sidekick, but I'm not sure that's always best... I guess it depends...
You can run Dragons of Stormwreck Isle for one to five players. If you have four or five friends ready to play with you, each person can take one of the characters provided above. Five players will find the encounters a little easier than four players will, but the adventure works fine as written for groups of four or five players.
The DM can also adjust encounters, either through use of sidekicks, altering the number of enemies, and/or changing how effective enemies are (changing HP, armor, damage).
True. That seems best, and I believe that encounter is optional anyway.
Player characters can flee from any fight. Always good to remember that. Run away to live and fight another day.
Same goes goes for monsters. But not zombies. Zombies just attack.
So if I have 3 zombies attacking me do I roll initiative for them as a group or individually?
I mean as the dm
Typically individual monsters.
Per the default rules, you roll once per type of monsters and they all share the same initiative
how do i join dnd campaigns
So if you have three zombies and two zombie ogres, you'd roll once for the zombies and once for the zombie ogres
And they each attack or does the group make one attack?
They each act independently
as a player
hey guys, any advice on how to distinguish good races for certain classes?
and then follow up question, what races are good for artificers
Any race is the simple answer
how do i join campaigns as a player
Initiative determines the order of turns during combat. When combat starts, every participant makes a Dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order. The DM makes one roll for an entire group of identical creatures, so each member of the group acts at the same time.

What’s essential to buy for DND? I already have the app for it so that saves money, DND Beyond that is. What all should I have if that’s the case?
nothing is essential. you can play the game without spending money.
if you want books for more options/rules/lore, then I would suggest the Player's handbook first
If you're using D&D Beyond you don't need to buy the entire (digital) book if you just want a specific playable race/class. You can buy the individual playable race/class for about US$2 (or about US$10 for a bundle).
This is a good resource for rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I bought the Aasimar race to share with a player recently that way. They appreciated not having to buy a whole book for the one thing needed to build their character. DDB is a great resource.
Yup, I bought a bunch of playable races to share with my players
Chess board is a cheap battle map plus pieces for PCs
☝🏻 Whatever you spend on these individual purchases gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
For spell save dc what is the 8 for?
Spell save dc = 8 + proficiency bonus + spell casting ability modifier
That's because the minimum Proficiency Bonus is +2, so that makes the minimum DC of 10.
Evening folks, obvious newcomer here.
How do reactions work? Like say I used my turn to attack a goblin and on its turn it attacks me, am I allowed to use a reaction everytime it attacks or is there a limit/cooldown?
Iirc you get one (1) reaction per turn.
So if goblin ■ attacks you and you react to it, then ♧ attacks you before your next turn, you already used your reaction.
When you take a reaction, you can't take another one until the start of your next turn.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Reactions
A class feature or spell would say it can be used with a Reaction, such as Shield or Hellish Rebuke
By any chance is it possible to make a rogue ranger with a companion?
So does it take the place of an action?
No.
A game feature will explicitly say if it’s a reaction. Opportunity attacks, for example.
To make the opportunity attack, you use your reaction to make one melee attack against the provoking creature.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OpportunityAttacks
So generally one action and reaction until your next turn?
Things you can do on your turn
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/combat#YourTurn
Oh man so would have to be a ranger with best master subclass?
Oh ok so I can take an action on my turn then until it's my next turn I get one reaction?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/combat#Reactions
Certain special abilities, spells, and situations allow you to take a special action called a reaction. A reaction is an instant response to a trigger of some kind, which can occur on your turn or on someone else’s. The opportunity attack, described later in this chapter, is the most common type of reaction.
When you take a reaction, you can’t take another one until the start of your next turn. If the reaction interrupts another creature’s turn, that creature can continue its turn right after the reaction.
Yes
If you want to be a Beast Master.
There are other subclasses with “pets”.
Or things like the Find Familiar spell.
Or just befriending a wild animal and convincing your DM to play along. 😅
the urchin background comes with a pet mouse
I’m wanting a pet raccoon 😅
How do u calculate spell save dc for the spell section of the character sheet?
8+proficiency bonus+spellcasting bonus
Is the spell attack bonus calculated like this? Proficiency bonus + spell casting ability modifier?
- 8
NeverMind no 8
What are the acronyms of each terms in D&D? Just wanted to put them in my notes to memorized them for a next session next week.
