ohhh so could completely depend on the campaign, interesting.... so is it best making a character specifically for the campaign?
You can have a character concept that you want to play, then edit it to fit with the campaign. Languages are one of those things that are pretty simple to change
neat, cheers
Well you are on the right track
You said you were in Poland right? You might be looking at the North American posters, which there will be a lot of in this server. Try looking out for people that are in the UK (GMT) as there should be some of us lurking here
Also might be worth seeing if there is a Polish D&D community server out there somewhere as another place to look
https://locator.wizards.com/ maybe some local store to you
is there any tips for a new player either playing or DMing. are minis a priority straight away or can other things be used as representation
I have no minis. I use Owlbear Rodeo where I need to run a battlemap, but also do theatre of the mind quite a bit
Chess board, wrapping paper draught counters, bottle tops Lego figures, anything can be used
I recommend against using edible things as they tend to go missing in my experience
When you roll for abilities, what kind of dice do u roll with? Can anyone explain it as simple as possible?:)
Absolute mood
Do you mean when generating your ability scores? Or when making ability checks
For generating ability scores just a d20
That's not correct
For generating ability scores, if you're rolling, you roll four six-sided dice and add up the highest three values. Do this 6 times in total and those are your numbers to assign to your abilities
This is the fun method
It's not the official method and this channel is for the basics, not homebrew
We don't want to confuse people with house rules before they've even figured out the basics
as davyd explained. you roll 4 six sided dice and count the 3 highest numbers together.
ty guys!
You can find those rules here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
what dices are usually used with magic abilities? and when do u typically use other dices?
The class features and spell descriptions would say which dice to use. d4, d6, and d8 are the most commonly used dice for damage. The d20 is used the most for attacks and saves. The d12 is probably the least used die.
the main die for the game is the d20. it is used for attack roles, ability checks and saving throws.
the other sized dice are usually used for things like damage or bonuses. Any spell or ability will tell you which dice to use
very nice ppl here XD ty alot guys
Definitely worth skimming through the Basic Rules that spamandtuna linked above
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. The videos are more digestible for new players than reading pages of text.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
which races are generally used for what classes and are there any legacy races that DMs would allow a newcomer to use or are they generally frowned upon
generally your race choice matters very little for your class, unless your table uses exclusively the rules for racial ability scores from before tasha's
i'm not sure what you mean by legacy races? the races from volo's and mordenkainens tome of foes or races from older editions?
I mean like Goliaths, aarakokra, those sorts of things
You can still use them, their were slight changes but they are still valid, your DM may just want you to use the new versions however.
It depends from DM to DM.
and where can I find the updated information on Goliaths (Might need to update my first character then XD)
monsters of the multiverse has the updated races
Link to the book in the marketplace where you can buy races piecemeal
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
thank you. I meant like would an elf be a better rogue than a dwarf. Would a Dwarf be a better barbarian than a human so on and so forth
again this depends on the table. most tables I know take the approach that the ASI are flexible since tashas. that means an elf barbarian can start with a 16 or 17 str just like a dwarf barbarian.
Got a weird question.... in normal light, does perception have a distance limit? Been looking at the ranger class and noticed with a longbow it can fire up to 600 feet at disadvantage.... but can they see that far?
That would be a #dnd-rules question
ahh sorry, I'm new to the game so thought I could ask it here
i've reput it into dnd rules
This channel is more for covering the basics
ohhh ok
i just bought the dm's guide, where should i start?
Read it for ideas. That said I'd start by actually reading the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That has the core game mechanics
I have no idea where to start but a friend of mine sort of got me into dnd through one of their friends but it was more like they made their own rule system and even our character sheets aren't exactly dnd. But the group became toxic and had to leave. I would like to get back into dnd any dnd group willing to work with a legit newbie? Thanks!

Hey its the overwatch guy
its looks a bit overwhelming at first but dont worry. many DMs take on newer players and help them learn the game
yeah matt mercer is a bit of a celebrity in dnd circles
I don't know what you're referring to. I do play Overwatch.
I'm gonna watch the video for now because it's less brain numbing
McCree guy
mercer voices ~~McCree ~~Cassidy
Matt Mercer is a professional voice actor and DM.
yeah? Genuine just recognized him from his voice acting side.
I'm on ability scores and my brain is melting
Anyone can give me a rough explaination on how character creation works?
I'm reading Part 1 Character Creation rn
you should probably finish that chapter and then ask more specific questions
I can only tell you what the book says in different words and that would take a lot of time for me to type out
reading
I wanted to make a nomadic character and reading through the sheets seems like wood elf fits that category
I thought you're watching tutorial videos? They're easier to digest than reading the Basic Rules.
the tutorial videos talked about dice and stuff and I don't have that, the written guide talks more about how to get started with character creations and points allocations
The videos goes into character creation, including rolling ability scores and classes.
You don't need physical dice when there are digital dice (including Google).
my brain hurt, can you hold my hand and explain it to me 🥹
Watch the videos and/or read the Basic Rules at your own pace. Feel free afterwards to ask specific questions.
Hey im new to this @-@ how is everyone
I tried putting my hand on top of my head and i felt steam coming out
yo i got an idea since we're both new we can learn together
why struggle alone when we can struggle together
XD awsome sure thing ^^
I'm currently creating lore for my character based off the guide book thinggy but I have no idea how magic and stuff works
XD aww damn i wish u luck
My friend told me * " You can be creative as much as you want "*
Me reading the guidebook
What creative??? IM SUPPOSE TO FOLLOW A RULE SET HERE
my friend lied to me.
Oof im sorry u were lied too xD
i should probably just pay those fiverrs people that offers dnd classes
Reading the guides giving me a seizure , I'm watching a video guide and a written guide
Hey i sent a friend request abd a dm ^^
any campaigns accepting brand new ppl?
Check out #looking-for-players
can i ask for a good character sheet? that isnt restricted to the basic races, unless thats all your supposed to use, i thought there was allowed to be more, but i might be wrong
The fillable PDF character sheet:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
If you're using D&D Beyond to build a character, you're limited to the races and classes that are found in the free Basic Rules, SRD, and Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Anything else you need to buy (either the digital books or just the specific playable races/classes (about $2 each)).
hi does anyone Homebrew in dndbeyond? i need help

ahh
can someone help me out? My warlock character has a unicorn patron, and im trying to figure out how all that realm stuff works
Question, Does a character gain/ can spend points that are gained when lvl up on skills?
Like animal handling and stuff
The core attributes go up but that can increase the skill bonus - e.g. if your dex goes from 12 to 14 your dex modifier increases and that increases skills associated with that attribute (e.g. stealth).
But how do i know If they do?
Like, in that example, my dex goes from 12 to 14, that would i crease all the skills associated to dex by two as well?
By one
Because those skills use your ability score modifier instead.
At 12, that’s a +1, and it increases (by one) to +2 at 14.
Ohhhh okai, thnks for the help! @smoky adder and @echo kelp uwu
any tips for a pseudodragon tamer?
What’s up everybody? New to D&D. Haven’t played but very interested to try

Yup.
is it good to start as a dm? like ive never playied the game but shoud i try being a dm or learn the game first as a player
That's up to you.
IMO I would suggest playing as a player so it's easier to learn the game, its rules, classes, and spells on another DM's time without the added pressure of being a DM, who has more responsibilities than players.
Personally, I would recommend starting off as a player first. It allows you to get a feel for the game without having the pressure of needing to run it, remember all the relevant rules, making story/encounters, etc. However, if you really want to, nothing wrong with starting as a DM. That is how I started and I turned out fine. Its your call in the end though
pressure? whats that?
i legitemetly havent felt pressure in my intire life
(or more like stress)
how was the website called
Do DMs often get info on the player's characters before they launch campaigns to better integrate character backstories into the story?

Do different races affect what they can do? Sorry don’t really know anything about dnd and am trying to read up on it
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L good play list to get you started, and yes race give you different abilities and stats increases ( although in newer books your can put these where you want )
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#RacialTraits
those are the differences between races in the basic rules. Please be aware that the bonuses to ability scores have become more flexible after recent books than whats written down here
Thank you so much, I’ve been reading from the links above but must’ve skimmed over that or it wasn’t mentioned (very helpful tho) didn’t know there were books may do more searching I guess
Okay while reading up on races it came up with some mythic Odyssey’s of something, are those also playable races or are they something else
And a couple other categories the odyssey’s was the first one I saw
mythic odysseys of Theros is a setting book. its sort of like ancient greece.
it has its own selection of races to pick from
Sorry haven’t read anything about the books, Does each game use a different book out of some set books and have to use the characters out of said book?
There are multiple different setting books which come with additional options to extend those available in the basic set. These settings are new worlds that DMs can use to play their games within, instead of making their own world. Ultimately it is up to your DM what restrictions they place on player options
For example Theros is mythical Greece themed, while Eberron is noir pulpy magicpunk
Okay that makes a lot of sense then, thank you
Does the book affect the challenges and fights? Still not sure how the fights work does the dm come up with them? Hasn’t been explained yet in what I’ve read
so there are different types of books
core: Player's handbook, Dungeon masters guide, monster manual. - The big three
Supplements: Xanathars, Tashas, Monster of the multiverse etc. - These books are not specific to any setting, they just add more options for players and DMs
setting books: Mythic Odesseys, Eberron ,Wildemount etc. - those books describe new settings
adventures: lost mine of phandelver, beyond the witchlight, storm kings thunder etc. -- these books are for DMs. they contain prewritten adventures.
Okay I’ll look them up and check them out
So more than one book are infused in the game or am I just confused
The setting books may offer the DM plot hooks or setting specific enemies that they can use, but that doesn't affect the core gameplay loop of how combat works
Okay cool
building encounters is described here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/building-combat-encounters
Thanks I’ll check it out rn
every table will use a different combination of books, though you can usually count on the core books being used
Okay table means the group who play the game right? Still not used to terms
Yep
yeah
Cool, sorry for asking so many questions, bit hard to ask some questions to google as i have no clue of terminology
No worries it is what this channel is for. Definitely worth reading through the Basic Rules to get a feel for the game. Feel free to ask anymore questions you have 🙂
Yup I read some but still pretty clueless as I literally knew nothing about it until today from reading up, still veryyy confused about stat points but I’ll hopefully figure it out
Wait so there’s equipment so it affects stats right? Do you need money to purchase equipment or a limit? Does the equipment range from race or role
Also new and confused, maybe general dnd vc? There’s lots of people there so they may be playing
maybe

Answering the question above. You have starting equipment which depends mostly on your class. It's normally some armour, a weapon or staff and a spell casting focus for a mage.
You may find, be rewarded or be able to buy new better equipment depending on your DM
Thanks thats great to know
Sorry I’m going to be asking a whole heap of questions, ability scores and modifiers are confusing me a lot , so the ability is like the total of possibility in attack? Website I’m reading is not too clear. And modifiers are the range of the possible ability score? Don’t really know how they relate
How did most of you guys learn to play? don’t really want to ask a million questions because I know it’s annoying but how do you start off? Playing straight away or reading up on the book and on websites
Or asking a million questions

Thank you so much for the help hopefully I’ll make some progress with understanding of the game
I had started by watching some live play streams, then I made a couple of characters. Then I kinda was just thrown into the deep end as my first session of DnD was as a DM

I bought the starter set for my kid and am trying to read into the ins and outs. I have no prior experience....
I stumble upon this in the book
"A wind spore is worth 30gp and at any given time 2d4 wind spores are ready to be harvested"
I don't understand how the dice is supposed to be used here....
“I want to try and harvest the wind spores.”
“Okay.” roll 2d4 = 5 “You’re able to harvest five of them.”
The dice you roll is called out by the “2d4” command.
I don’t have the rest of the book, but with the context provided if a player tried to harvest some of these wind spores you could roll two four sided dice and add the results together to find out how many there are when they make the attempt.
It sounds like Dragons of Stormwreck to me
Ahh. So it tells the amount of successful harvests
Yeah but I don’t have that book.
Where 2d4 means 2 four sided dice
Yeah the "xdx" jargon I learned from Baldurs Gate way back when 😅
If you were to recommend your top 5 NPC's that you'd have in every town, what would they be and why? Or maybe you recommend not every town and maybe every other town? I'm sure theme matters to the answer, just gauging your expected idea
Mayor/elder man, blacksmith, shop keeper, old woman herbalist, Town drunk
I like that 🙂
Some might cross over the old lady maybe the town/village leader the blacksmith may run the only shop, or the inn keeper is the leader and runs the shop and also a drunk 😁
Valid points, I'm guessing in most scenarios there is not always a shop in a town for various story reasons
Yes but the locals may have some stuff to trade with you
Think along the lines of the Witcher games if you’ve played them the bigger the town the more stuff people there are
hey y'all. is there any room for a player with the experience of a fetus?

why the hell shoud i ever equip my secoundary weapon?
I feel like this question needs more context
That probably depends on what your primary and secondary are.
no more like use
i have a light hammer and a greatsword
i gues for bashing damage?
Well a greatsword is a two-handed melee weapon.
yes it is
If you can’t get within range for your greatsword, you can throw the hammer.
(You only need two hands for the greatsword at the moment you attack.)
Yeah, it’s a thrown weapon with a range of 20/60.
No, those distances are very explicit:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
sometimes enemies are immune or resistant to one damage type so its good to have a different one as backup
and of course weapon properties are important too
Hello guys, i have no idea how dnd works but my dad recently told me that my uncle was obsessed with it as a kid, also a few of my friends played it and i was interested in it. Soo, can someone pls explain to me what it is?
You roleplay and roll a dice to see if your character can do something and how effective it is
dnd is a tabletop roleplaying game. there is one person (Dungeon Master) who controls the world and is arbiter of the rules. the others at the table play characters in the world. you are presented with challenges and have to roll dice to see if you succeed or fail
Dungeon master is the narrator basically, and sets the rules
All great descriptions above. I’d add it’s make-believe shared among a group, with rules in place so the imagined space is fair/consistent.
?new @rancid eagle and @hushed forge the command can only be done in the newcomers channel.

Hello newbie DM here
I need advice on situation, long story short my small friends party are lacking healer and after big job they asked as payment to assign someone who can "support" them in their adventures.
so im thinking making character and play along side as DM/player? idk if that is good or bad idea or how to interact or is there any other solutions?
I would suggest making a sidekick, rather than a full PC. DM controlled PCs can risk over shadowing the party

Hi ! I’m a beginner at Dnd and I’ve a question about adventure. For Christmas I received the initiation Box and the essentiel (of the 5th edition I guess). I looked on internet but I didn’t find others « games box » with adventure book and screen for example (like in the essentiel box). So what am I supposed to do after playing this 2 boxes ?? ( sorry for my english I’m French)
hello i bought the board game and i wanna play with some friends. I don't understand the rules can someone help ?
Hi
@merry belfry The boxes come with both rule manuals, an adventure, and (In the case of the starter set) characters. Afterwards, you would want to buy the Players Handbook for making characters, and either a pre-made adventure (Such as Storm Lord's Wrath) or make your own with the Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide
What specifically?
the essential
What rules?
Just to follow up on what TheOT said, we can offer advice on the published adventures, but forgive me for not knowing which ones have been translated into French
how to play
If you've got one of the introductory boxed sets, it'll contain a copy of the basic rules, which you can also find here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Give that a read and it'll get you familiar with how the game works
We can answer any questions you still have after reading the rules
Whats 5e???
It is short for 5th edition, which is the current edition of D&D
not sure if this is the right channel for this question so if it isnt lmk
anyway, how do i post to #750812887697588356 ? the pins are really vague about it :[

Hey I have a question
Do I haft to have to have a camara on my dice if I'm in a campaign
It also depends on the vibe at the table. I trust my current group, but with strangers I'd probably have us all use a virtual tabletop for rolls.
Do we add our DEX modifier to our attacks damage rolls with ranged weapons? I had it in my head that we don't but I can't find anything either way in the PHB. (It's been a while since I played and most of my games were in 3.5...)
Turns out the answer is yes, but it's listed in chapter 7: "You add your Dexterity modifier to your attack roll and your damage roll when attacking with a ranged weapon, such as a sling or a longbow."
Players but thank you I am probably going to end up getting Tasha’s because I was recommended it
Hi,I am entering dnd and I have a question,I dont understand how to play dnd,I asked a lot but I didnt understand,I also tried buying the dnd adventure begins but someone told me that wasnt the real dnd so whats the real dnd? Hello i am COMPLETELY new to D&D and i was just wondering where i should start with books (Monster manual,Players handbook etc) i have already bought and have the starter set but i was just wondering where to start because this whole thing is just kind of (aka very very very veeeery) scary to me
jezze this is alot
I assume you're referring to reading the Basic Rules?
You only need to read the first four chapters on character creation.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Do Dhampirs require sleep or can they long rest doing light activity/meditation
The rules don’t say one way or the other but I believe you use the long rest rules for the original race before Dhampir lineage is added.
Yeah I couldn’t find anything either but I go with that as well as double check with my DM. Thanks!
The general rule is that all creatures require sleep. A player race would need to provide a specific override to that rule if they wanted to change it.
Reborn, for example:
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
And assuming you were formerly a race that didn't need sleep, that's not a trait you would retain through Ancestral Legacy:
If you replace a race with this lineage, you can keep the following elements of that race: any skill proficiencies you gained from it and any climbing, flying, or swimming speed you gained from it.
So no matter what you were before, the answer is still: yes, Dhampirs have to sleep.
How do I use the bot for getting players

Hey everyone!
I'm having a bit of an issue with the Dyno bot form submission in #750812887697588356.
As you can see, I exist here as a physical verfied human being with a player selected role in this Discord, so I'm fairly sure I have joined!
I get the message *"You are not a member of Dungeons & Dragons. Only members can fill out this form, join to be able to fill it out." * when following the "Fill out this form" prompt on the pinned help message.
Following the link throws me back to the Discord browser version with no result or form to fill out.
Anyone know of something to try? Perhaps I am being a goofball and missing something!
I believe you need to give Dyno permissions to post on your behalf by authenticating against Dyno with your Discord account.
It may require allowing Discord embeds
Hmm, okay, I'll see if there's a settings page as I have used Dyno before. But I have not seen a prompt for that. That would make sense.
For further assistance you can ask the mods in #moderator-support
Oh RIP. Yeah, it's me.
It's a different account that's logged in! I believe you've helped me Dying Noob. Perhaps you are not a noob any longer 😂
RIGHT! Let's try again shall we?
Yeah, worked! Cheers @echo kelp I bless your cows and your family 👏
@clear crypt Please use #looking-for-players and follow the instructions pinned there.

Naa it broken i just did that
And even if you can't get it to work, posting in other channels is not permitted
I can only post in one channel ?
That's what #looking-for-players is for...
Inside the pinned post there are links - click it. It takes you to Dyno where you authenticate using your Discord account. Then use the form so Dyno can create the post. Dyno creates your post and creates a thread where you can provide follow up/answer additional questions that come up. The post will be removed by Dyno after 7 days.

Have you looked into using the Lost Mine of Phandelver? It's free with D&D Beyond accounts and it was written for new players and DMs in mind.
I am also new…
Creating something from scratch as a new DM to teach new players is quite the endeavour when there are already prewritten adventures made for that.
Thanks

Good thing I can read insanely fast
Well, you'll need to comprehend what you're reading. Feel free to ask questions here after reading.
Looking at the starter set here. Let's say a zombie makes an attack. I get the roll has to equal or exceed the AC. But the modifier with its melee weapon is the +3 to hit listed under actions and its +1 strength bonus?
The monsters' statblock has calculated all of the modifiers in the attack so you don't need to calculate any further.
A zombie has a Proficiency Bonus of +2 and +1 Str modifier, so its attack hit is +3.
Okay I think I see now. The +3 comes from the strength and proficiency bonus?
Got it
The damage only has the Str modifier and NOT the Proficiency Bonus.
Totally random question, im working on a profile for a city im going to use in a campaign, all I know about orcs is what I’ve seen in movies, they’re about good for flighting and slaughtering, are orcs known for anything else? Could they run a dive bar? A diner/restaurant?
Thank you
When do you apply the attack bonus of a weapon?
You’re asking this in multiple channels which is considered spamming.

I’m reading the players guide
Attack bonuses are applied when the attack roll is made - so added to the attack roll result.
Many games play theater of the mind - no grids or tokens. Just descriptions and general estimations of ranges.
I’m planning on making a campaign, any tips?
But others like to use maps - and grids can help players figure out distances, etc.
Check in #dm-discussion - great place to bounce ideas and get suggestions and feedback from other DMs.
👍
So to my understanding, high elves and eladrin are fey magic level 11 so can I start out as any elf sub race and work up to become a high elf? Do specific races equal a specific high elf if so?
Also what’s the difference between a high elf and eladrin
Um
Ok
How do we explain this
You pick your race and subrace at level 1, and there are no inherent restrictions on what race/subrace you can pick
You get all that race's features at level 1, unless explicitly stated otherwise in the text of the feature.
the High Elf is a subrace like any other, and is available to all players at level 1. It's not in any way inherently superior to a Drow, Wood Elf, or Eladrin.
Oh yeah by the way Eladrin are just the elves that live in the Feywild
Whereas the High Elves are just basically the posh elves
Does that clear it up?
@rocky frigate yes! Thank you so much! So is this wrong?
Nvm can’t post pictures one sec
Just DM it to me
Oki
"Up to eleven" is a figure of speech that simply means "their magic is stronger than that of other elves"
Of course, the other subraces make up for it with stuff like the Wood Elf's ability to camouflage easily in nature.
Is English your second language by chance, or have you just never heard the expression?
Yes it does
Answering your DM: Yep, you're basically correct.
When you take a race that has subraces, you choose one subrace associated with that race and gain the benefits for both the race and the subrace

one of my favorite channels is the dungeon dudes
Crap guide is entertainment, not education
Howdy! Wanting to push myself to play finally, a bit nervous and having some issues, where would be a good place to get some clarity on a few matters?
That's what this channel is for! What are the issues?
Does the dm decide wether or not to accept a home brew sub race?
Yes
Well, I am looking to join a group, but I have two major issues. One being that I cannot meet in person as I live quite far out and another being my inability to talk verbally.
You'll need to find a "play by post" game, then. These aren't as common, unfortunately.
A lot of people play virtually (especially during the pandemic).
Or, I suppose, if you can find someone who'd be willing to have a player in a game who can only text.
Or, if you're on camera, find people who can understand sign language, if you use that
I do hope I can, it is just another issue with my situation.
I do not know where to look though.
Playing online my group uses Discord for both text and voice (the former is usually for private messages between me (the DM) and my players). Perhaps you can find a group that will support text chats during gameplay.
I will have to find out where to look, currently I am very lost, being a new player and mute does not really help me get alot of people willing to let me in their group.
do stronger weapons exist? i could only find the basic weapons in the equipments page
nope
how do martial classes scale then?
They gain abilities as they rise in level. Otherwise, you're looking at your DM giving you magic items, which are in the Dungeon Masters Guide
So yeah, I guess there are stronger weapons, just not mundane ones.
On the topic of martials scaling: a simple example is fighters, which have several non-weapon abilities that become more powerful and gain more uses as they level up, while also gaining extra attacks every few levels.
what kind of different content does the dmg and php have? when i checked them out they seemed pretty similar
The PHB has most of the rules of the game.
The DMG has tips and tables to help DMs learn to be DMs, it has tables and descriptions of loot, including magic items, and it has a variety of optional rules for the game.
i see, thanks
Hey guys I’m new to online dnd and have no clue how to start I have played a small amount of dnd with friends but that’s about it can anyone help?
If I play with you I will be asking a lot of questions
Hey what would a level one bard need equipment/weapon wise?
that's more of a #1045165827068002374 question
okay thank you

Hello
I made two character sheet's, is it ok if I can place it here, so that other people can check if its good to use?
well idk what to do with all this https://ddb.ac/characters/81299399/l5oYRv
@woven dust #1045165827068002374 would be the place to ask
What does it mean to fill in the little dots on a character sheet?
For spells? That indicates the spell is prepared for clerics, druids, paladins, and wizards
So basically it indicates what spells that character can cast that day.
How do I keep track of resting?
Usually make a note of when you did it/how long or use the online sheet!
I prefer online as it's easier to navigate/update, but it's player preference!
as a player or DM?
As a player
well on DDB you can click on the buttons for long rest or short rest once you successfully completed a rest in game.
if you use paper, you can mark off all used resources with a pencil and erase those markings once you finished a rest.
What’s a characters max number of hit dice?
the number of hit dice are equal to you character level
the size of those dice are dependant on your class levels
what class, fighter?
Yes
- One per class level.
yeah you have 2d10 total hit dice at level 2 in that case
So at level 3 I have 3d10?
yes, (assuming you stick to fighter)
you may not be able to chose
The DM determines it?
long rests take 8 hours and you can only benefit from one of them in 24 hours
a lot things can happen while you attempt a long rest
maybe there are monsters that stumble upon your camp, maybe a quest is time sensitive and a long rest will result in time running out for example
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L good play list for new players
Practicality usually
you can almost always grab an hour of chilling but finding 8 hours of Downtime is hard
Also unable to do more than a single long rest per day
How do actually play does a dm just pick you randomly then you start playing you just make parties please explain
A Dm typically will pick you as a player, they may have a method to sort of see if your a good fit for there table, varies depending on the Dm
But once you get the okay, your in and they will designate a time and date for the game
That’s the Digital setup for getting a table in 5e
PbP is really common too though so not always a time and date
Irl works different and I can’t really say what it is because I don’t have experience with it
whats above is a pretty common way for things to happen though there really isnt one answer to the question.
sometimes, a group is looking for a DM, sometimes a group gets together and then decides who will DM. it just depends
You also have to be proactive to find one
Start messaging people who fit what you can do and see if they will accept your offer
I found that waiting for a DM to message you is rare
You kinda have to start the conversation with them
If you fill in the little bubbles next to a skill do u get some kind of proficiency bonus and where do u apply it in a dice roll of some kind?
That doesn’t tell me how many skills I can be proficient in
You gain proficiencies from your class, your background, and sometimes your race. They will tell you which skills you gain proficiency in, or which set of skills you can choose from.
I would strongly suggest reading through the free Basic Rules before trying to create a character, stuff like this is all covered in there.
Where’s the free basic rules?
Check the pinned message here in this channel.
So basically
It will litterally be my first combat
Here is the scenario
2 guards at the door that me (bear barb lv 8) and the rogue (lv 9) will kill stealthily...hopefully
Then we will get in the garrison and have to deal with the remaining guards/soldiers...about 30 maybe more of them
Hopefully the necro and the druid will follow us but I am not sure
So the question is...tips for not diying at my first combat? LoL
Ofc rage but what else
Just cause i dont wanna die at first combat lmaoo
Also
I am at 89 hp and i am an half orc bear totem barbarian, 14 ac only unluckily
A greataxe and great weapon master
Help lol
hi! I have a question. I am new to d&d and I'd like to watch some games first of all. does anyone know any source where I can watch games? you can dm me
Critical Role
Ton of episodes
Check YouTube/Twitch for D&D streams- that said you might enjoy Dungeon Dudes Dungeons of Drakkenheim
Can anyone tell me in like really basic terms how bardic inspiration works/ how to use it?
Just remember that most D&D streams are oriented towards entertainment first vs teaching all the rules accurately.
Hi, I've played a few sessions of dnd but nothing crazy and I'm looking for a group to play with. I know the basics but apart from that I'm pretty new

Alright ty
You use your bonus action and choose someone within 60ft range who can hear you (not yourself).
That person gets a d6 (monopoly die) and can roll it and add whatever number they roll to an ability check, attack roll or saving throw.
They have it for 10min and can only use it once. You can do bardic inspiration the number of times as your charisma modifier and regain any spended uses after long rest
Sorry this is a bit late fjhfhdhdg
Hi
@languid charm Please don't post the same message across multiple channels
sorry
I feel like my character is dead lmaoo
If you are dealing with regular guards, (Cr1/8), then you should have no trouble at all with the fight. Just rage and go on the attack (Barbarians are quite simple). Do note that barbarians are not known for being stealthy.
I do know
Luckily i am also invisible i should be able to do it since i think it is a group check and the rogue is insanely stealthy (if I dont roll really low)
With that said they also could be soldiers
How would a bonus action work? Do i need to roll for it or do i just have a bonus action. Thanks for the explanation
You just have it, some stuff needs actions and some stuff needs bonus actions
I dont think you have to roll to cast bardic inspiration
You just have one
Tho you can do only things that are allowed to do in a bonus action. It is written in the rule of the ability
For instance.
The rage of a barbarian can be activated as bonus action therefore you can activate it only using a bonus action (that if you are in combat)
It is also true that you can use it freely outside of combat.
If a Warlock makes a pact with a magic weapon, does it still have to be one of the weapons he can create according to the table ?
or can it be any type of weapon ?
yeah it can be a magic weapon but does this magic weapon still have to be a simple melee weapon as the table says ?
Dont think It does, I was misremembering something else.
It can be any magic weapon.
great thank you
If using a grid map is it possible to move diagonally?
Yes. But there are variant rules for diagonal movement your DM may or may not use. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#SqueezingintoaSmallerSpace
What are the rules for diagonal movement ?
Read the link.
Oh I misread it
if players loot a dead corpse, do they need to make investigation checks ?
The DM can decide some items are hidden and require a successful investigation check to find. Other DMs may assume that if given enough time the character will find it all anyway and not require a check.
How does one go about finding a dnd group here exactly?

Attack rolls are a d20 plus modifiers plus bonus (if any). If this is equal to or higher than the enemies AC, it’s a hit.
Damage rolls use other dice (like d10) and only measure how many hit points are removed from the targets hit point total. Once the hit point total is 0, the creature is “dead”.
Hiiii I’m a noob 😄
I’m new to dnd, I’ve never played but I would like to learn
How do you know how many skills I fill in the little bubbles for?
Idk
It says pick 2
Aaaaaa
Might want to pick 2 then.
On my example character sheet it has more than one skill bubble filled in
Fighter
So you get
Skills: Choose two skills from Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, and Survival
So you can choose 2 from any of those.
Then for instance Folk hero background gives you 2 more specifically Animal Handling & Survival.
So you would have 4, but you only get to pick 2 from your class and then you get whatever your background states.
Where do I find background in the players handbook?
What’s ddb?
D&D Beyond https://www.dndbeyond.com/
hi, first time player and am trying to create a character in the character sheet and most of the things i dont understand, like where to place my spells, how to calculate intuition and etc
just bought the essentials kit, none of the books still
and all i understood from the rules is how to calculate abilities and modifiers
creation steps right
thx
btw which books should i buy
How do I know which saving throw bubbles to fill in?
ok
arent they proficencies
They should be somewhere with the proficiency list of your class
Found it
Can I choose my characters flaws or do I have to use a pre made one?
The premades one are given as examples but feel free to create your own.
Tbh a lot of the time they are for your reference, and only affect gameplay if you choose for them to.
The more arrogant characters deny they have flaws... 😉
Question, I have 7 different 5e story books that I want to run. But being very new to DMing, I have no clue which would be easier.
I have
Princes of Apocalypse
Curse of Strahd
Tales from the Yawning Portal
Storm King's Thunder
Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus
Hoard of the Dragon Queen
Rise of Tiamat
Are your players new too?
Yes
Tales from the Yawning Portal is an anthology book of classic (meaning from older editions) dungeon crawls.
The first adventure from that book is Sunless Citadel. I recommend running this because it's a low level dungeon crawl adventure — it makes it easier for you as a new DM because the PCs have limitations of where to go compared to "open sandbox" campaigns like Storm King's Thunder (which can be overwhelming for new players of not knowing what to do next).
Of course you can always run the Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is free with all D&D Beyond accounts. That adventure was written in mind for new players and DMs (it was part of the original 5E Starter Set).
Ah, alright. Thank you for the assistance!
There are a lot of D&D Youtubers who have tutorials on running the Lost Mine of Phandelver.
Do skills gain levels when the proficiency goes up after leveling?
No, a skill is a binary yes/no for "Do I get to add my proficiency bonus to tasks that the DM says use this skill?"
Could someone help my fill out my charater sheet
5E did away with skill points. 5E ability skills is based on the relevant ability modifier and Proficiency Bonus (only if you're proficient in that particular ability skill).
Where are you stuck?
I don’t know how to start
I have my charater but I don’t know how to fill it out, I’m new to dnd
What’s your character?
A tiefling
Roll 4 6 sided dice and take the top 3 numbers and add them to whatever ability you want then do it 5 more times for the rest of your abilities
Is that for me?
Dm me
What do you mean by standard array?
No, I meant derect message
If you say "DM me" around here, folks will ask you to roll initiative. 😉
Ohhhhh, sorry
Oh
alchemist
I know no one who plays it but one of my friends wants to
Idk
I don’t know like anything
Could someone help me understand
Can I message you

So there is this box in the "dnd essentials kit" and i dont know what to do with it
Its a cardborad box
What cards
Ok, I have the starter set rule book and the lost mine of phandelver and they don’t have anything about charater making
Are the free basic rules just the players handbook verbatim?
Oh dose i see now
Me?
What does it mean to be incapacitaed
Couse i cant really get it from the pic
Piss drunk?
Like im so confused
"cant take actions and reactions"
I dony understand
Ok
Like im not talking about the rules
Im not very good at english
What does it mean to be incapacitated
In this contekst
Ok diffrent q-what couses incapitation
Incapacitated: "An incapacitated creature can't take actions or reactions."
@woeful mist the word incapacitated means 'unable to do something' - not game specific, word meaning type way
If I'm passed out drunk, I'm incapacitated.
Gotcha
I’m having a hard time with the alignment
Alignment is a way to show where on a cosmological/ethical scale a character falls in their beliefs/behavior. In previous versions of D&D alignment often had mechanical effects. In 5th edition D&D, alignment is most often used as a role-play prompt of “what would this character potentially do?”. Don’t feel like you have to follow it though.
For the player name do I put my real name
First name or discord ID is fine, you dont want to post your full name
Ok
Worry less about alignment and just think about your character's Ideals, Bonds, Flaws, and personality. Alignment doesn't define your character but the other way around.
Ok
How do I figure out what ac a character has?
In Dungeons and Dragons, your armor class, or AC, represents your defense against attacks from monsters. NetHack borrows this concept; as in older editions of D&D, a lower AC is better than a higher one. A character with no armor or protection has AC 10. It is best to reduce your AC below 0.
Basically how much armor do you have
If they wear armour then use the armour's AC plus any Dex modifier (if allowed)
The base AC (unarmoured) is 10 plus Dex modifier
The more ac you have the better in 5e right?
The higher your AC, the harder it is to hit you
The higher the number the better
AC is the target number an attacker needs to roll in order to hit their opponent.
Higher AC = harder to hit
How do I figure out how much hp my character has?
What's their class and level and Constitution score?
Level 1 wizard
Then you have 6 HP + your Constitution modifier
If you haven't figured out your Ability scores, then you need to do that before you go on to do anything else
I see it now
Because pretty much everything else is affected by your ability scores
How do I pick starting weapons for a wizard?
It's listed in your class description
What’s the attack bonus for a dagger?
When attacking after getting past the ac of a monster do I use the weapon damage or hit dice?
Your Proficiency Bonus plus modifier
If you're proficient with daggers
How do I know if I’m proficient with daggers?
Your race and class descriptions
If you have proficiency in common weapons, then you're proficient in daggers. If it says you're proficient in daggers, you're proficient in daggers.
Wizards have proficiency in daggers, it says so in the class description.
Here's the class description for wizards: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard
pretty sure literally every class is proficient with daggers.
How do I figure out the attack bonus of my dagger
so daggers are finesse weapons. to hit and enemy with a melee weapon, you usually use your strenght, but with a finesse weapon you can use your dexterity instead.
if you are proficiency, you add your proficiency bonus.
A lvl 1 character has a Proficiency Bonus of +2
So your attack bonus with a dagger would be 2+(str or dex mod)
If you have a staff, then it's going to be 2 + Str mod, as a staff isn't a finesse weapon
example:
a level one fighter has a dexterity of 16 a str of 10 and a proficiency bonus of 2
so to your attack roll you add your dex (+3), because it is higher than str (+0) and your PB (+2) = +5 to hit
if you hit, the fighter's dagger does 1d4+3 damage (you can add your str or dex to damage with a finesse weapon too, but not your Proficiency Bonus)
I just want to know how to calculate the ATK bonus for a weapon
It's 2 + (str or dex mod, whichever is higher)
we just told you
you got a fighter?
Yes
How is your attack bonus +7?
you took the archery fighting style i assume?
Oh that explains it
yep otherwise it would be +5 like the dagger
Unless you've got a 20 Dex
After rolling a d20 to see if I can bypass a monsters ac do I use my hit dice or weapon dmg
weapon damage dice
FYI, if your race gives you a +2 to Dex, that goes to the score (the number between 3-18) and not to the modifier (the number that has a + or -)
hit dice are for healing during a short rest and to calculate your max HP
Do I add the attack bonus of a weapon after rolling it’s damage?
you only add your ability modifier used in the attack roll
but not the proficiency bonus
other bonuses like archery are also NOT added to damage
You don't add your proficiency bonus to your damage
What’s the point of attack bonus then?
the point of the attack bonus is to help you hit the AC
you dont do any damage if you dont hit
The attack bonus is added to your attack roll - the roll you make to see if you hit your target
If you succeed in your attack roll, then you roll for damage
You do add your Str or Dex modifier to the damage roll, just not your proficiency bonus.
Basic D&D combat:
- Roll initiative to see who attacks in what order
- Your turn: choose target
- Roll to attack
- If you hit, roll damage
- Relish in your enemies' demise
- Get loot

@cobalt frigate thanks again broski
Is there something like the best DND character.
No but there is the best character you make for how you want to play be it for role play purposes, theme or just rolling lots of shiny maths rocks. As long as your having fun plying your character then that’s the best character

Thank you
@jolly crest it's what's called an actual play show; people playing D&D for other people to watch. Some actual plays are streamed live and others recorded.
hello im new
hi
Ahhh so critical role us an organisation of people who stream DnD
What does it mean in DnD beyond when it says
Add critical role content?
Is it like an extra set of content made by critical role people?
Or associated with the setting they play in
i think its CR homebrew content
It covers both unofficial homebrew content such as the blood hunter class, and official content such as the Chronurgy subclass
where exactly am i supposed to put spellslots
Are you using a paper character sheet?
The sheet for spells will have a section at the top of each level for spell slots
There will be a sheet for spellcasting, usually divided into three columns with dividers for spell level
i have three rows of name; atk bonus; damage/type
You are probably on the first page
the character sheet usually comprises of three pages
I have essential kit too any class recommendations
Depends how you want to play
Melee, ranged, spell caster, healer
nope
Do you want to play a fighter in armor? Nature warrior (Ranger)? Healer (Cleric usually)? Blaster (Wizard/Warlock/Sorcerer)? Other kind of spellcaster? The list goes on
i have one sheet with 2 sides
I like the idea of a ranger but isn't there a weird stigma about them or sum? I always hear their bad
There are many classes available, which one you select is entirely up to you, there is no wrong choice
Yeah people say alot of its class features are situational BUT
there is no weird stigma to Rangers, just that powergamers consider them to be sub-par.
And frankly, Rangers in my experience are fine.
They deal quite the amounts of damage
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L first 6 videos in this play list for making a character
Honestly I thought the same thing about ranger but it's just a stereotype from the memes
you are missing the spells page
i dont have anything else
Let me dig out my essentials kit from storage, I'm pretty sure there should be a second page for spells
unintended flex
although the EK character sheet may not have a spells page, it is after all part of a short lived campaign.
maybe, its only to lvl 6
why would that be a flex? Lots of folks have the EK.
not that he has it
If ranger isn't in my rule book can I not use them? Or is there a website with more classes
SoggySal, which rulebook are you using?
its that he says "from storage" meaning he has a lot of stuff
Essential kit
A good idea if your struggling is to use dnd beyond to calculate your stats because you can show them in the form of a character sheet
So you can put that info onto a printed dnd character sheet
The Essentials Kit is a pared down version of DnD, it may not be in that ruleset
I'd have to check
link?
To the site?
yzes
ok
It has bard cleric rouge and fighter
SoggySal, confirmed, it doesn't include Ranger.
Apologies @grizzled cliff , you're right. The Essentials Kit character sheets are missing the spellcasting page
np
However, you can download character sheets here: https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/5E-CHARACTERSHEETS.zip
This link might work?
Is there a website with official classes?
which character sheet
Yep, D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e) Classes. A comprehensive list of all official character classes for Fifth Edition.
Oh so you make the character and you can make it show your stats in character sheet form
Are you using DnD Beyond or a VTT?
i mean in resources
There is always the wiki but idk if the dnd wiki is official
I'm not sure how to use dnd beyond tbh
There is no official wiki
Ahh
5e/adventurers league/dragons of stormwreck
Since the wiki has info on every class that is in other books
Does that mean it is not allowed?
Because it gives the ability to bypass paying for the books?
Yes, that would be pirated content
And against server rules to discuss or advocate the use of
My understanding is that class information is SRD isn't it?
That's why I was worried of recommending it I was worried it wouldn't be official
The 12 core classes + one subclass each, yes
Anything beyond that, no
nods
There is one class which you need a book for
hello, i joined like, an hour ago? im struggling to find my way around the server (even though its pretty small). I'm trying to find a character building help channel?
You want to go to #channel-guide to see what channels we have and then #880965682462875679 to find out which roles you need to access a given channel
Are you making a character with Dnd beyond?
Artificer, it's found in Eberron: Rising from the Last War and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
no just on paper
thankyou
Okay
@normal lark maybe character discussion? #1045165827068002374
I can help you in Dms if you want just tell me what you need to know about character creation
Most importantly
What class?
can you help me too
Morning!
thankyou
Hi everyone! Can I ask a newbie question please? On character creation - do you keep one character and advancements from campaign to campaign, or a new character for each campaign?
Generally you do not take your character across different tables. If you’ve got a different DM, you’ll likely have a different character.
If you have the same DM and they want to continue a story involving characters y’all have already made, then it’s likely.
The exception is Adventurer’s League, where with a few adjustments to the rules you can take your character to any table so long as it is also part of that league.
Thank you!
What is adventurers league?
Adventurer's League is D&D's organized play rules - meaning if you follow the AL (Adventurers League) rules, you can go to different AL games and play using the same character. You can learn more by getting the Adventurers League role in #880965682462875679 and view the standards/rules for AL play in #al-rules-compendium in the pinned message.
Do u have to choose a sub race?
Yep, if a race has subrace options, you must choose one
Any body hosting a dnd game for beginners
I would like to join
I haven’t played dnd before
So I would like to experience that
Seconded honestly, I know I did one campaign or whatever it’s called on discord with more experienced players ( it was fun and everything honestly) but I’m still more confused.
What do you mean
Oh I met also was curious to know if anyone else was hosting one as well!
#looking-for-players or try a local game store of IRL play
Ok
I know! I’m definitely watching out if anyone answers.

How many traits can I have on a single character?
As many as you think best describe your character
Can I just have them all?
If you think it fits the character, sure
Traits are just suggestions for your character
whats a PC? not in the computer sense
Player character.
To be concise, traits flaws and so on are just suggestions to help you create a character that falls in line with your class fantasy.
You can use all of them or none of them and write in your own. You can spend a ton of time making a deep character with a rich backstory (if it flies with your dm), or spend very little time and make a barbarian who fights for his clan and revels in the chaos. You have as much room to create as your dm allows.
But its a good to try and make it work within your background trait, and class fantasy
Do I always for the attack roll use the strength modifier? Or does it depend?
It depends
Melee weapons by default use strength
Ranged weapons by default use dexterity
Finesse weapons can use either
Thrown weapons use whatever you can use to make a melee attack
is it possible for someone to help me create my first DnD character?
How do I make a character
How do you know how much damage a draconic ancestry attack will do?
The ability tells you
It doesn’t
Read the section labelled "Breath Weapon"
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/16-dragonborn#DragonbornTraits:~:text=cone (Con. save)-,Breath Weapon,-You can use
What's the point of having proficiency with shields ?
Got it
2d6 in the firsts levels iirc
so you don't get the +2 AC if you're not proficient with shields ?
How does one character birth
from your imagination
And where do I put my "imagination
on a character sheet ?
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
you still get the +2 though
May I dm you I'm new new
You can create a character on https://www.dndbeyond.com/
Gracias amigo
I’m working on my first one too
The best thing you can do imo is look at a lot of example characters, start with a non spellcaster for your first, and read up a lot on race and class info. Theres a ton of guides to character builds too
I can help some folks if they have questions, but a lot of it is gonna be studying what you WANT to do too
Check the pinned message here in the channel - lots of good links to help get you started
And keep in mind its okay to use a spellcaster if you really want but you should absolutely be prepared for more heavy reading than martials
spellcaster as a first character is difficult for me
that's why i made a cool barbarian
I’m trying to make a tiefling alchemist
Artificer is closest related
That's what i thought too
There are a lot of alchemist homebrews and alchemist is a pathfinder class though
But realistically, artificer is basically just alchemist+
Any tips for what to do when the dm asks you "how do you want to do this"? I'm great with interacting with npcs but my mind goes blank whenever that happens
Then I,l do that
depends on what you ask/talk about with the NPC
I mean when you kill an enemy and they ask how you want to finish it off
My mind kinda goes blank for some reason
This depends on you, your character, etc. Usually "how do you wanna do this" is character flavor. If youre uncomfortable answering pull your dm aside and ask him to not do that to you.
In general you just do whatever. You a rapier user? "I stab the goblin straight through the heart and pierce its back, then kick it off of my blade" etc. You just come up with something cool. Maybe write some down throughout the fight so you have plans in vase you get the question
I know i tend to blank on that especially with new characters, so ill write down ideas when its not my combat turn
Can we make a charater without a dm
Because all the videos I’ve watched says that “you can do this if it’s ok with your dm”
It's best to start making a character after you've joined a game
Otherwise you might find yourself more limited when it comes to finding games
Ok, because i haven’t
I make characters all the time and then remake them to fit the game im in.
In general, unless theyre going for specific class fantasy or they dont have any of a certain class in their world, sticking to core races and core classes and not using optionsl features, most things are permitted, but its definitely best to have a dm to ask questiond
Hi
Sure just use point buy or standard array, making character concepts is fine too then you’ll have lots of ideas for when you get into a game, keep your backstory vague so it can be tweek to fit the DMs world
How do you make a saving throw?
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L good play list for newcomers
Can you get advantage on ability checks and does it make you roll 2 dice?
Yes
