So i have to be in their campaign to use it? And i need to know them beforehand?
You’re welcome to look for a game to join. We’ve got a few channels to help with that.
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
if you want to use the share function, this is done using the built in campaign managment tools in DDB (and the person who wants to share has to have the subscription, not only have the books).
Online and public tables do exist, but in general there arent many that will have the sharing functions enabled.
Anyone in a campaign with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing for that campaign. It doesn’t have to be the DM.
And once it’s enabled, everyone’s books get shared with everyone else, not just the DM’s or the subscriber’s.
I’m not a newcomer but I haven’t played in a while
I'm brand new to DnD. I've never played before, but I read the player's handbook (at least the different races, skimmed some classes, and then then the class I wanted) and made a character.
Gotta be honest, it's a little overwhelming, but I'm sure once I start, that'll fade.
Welcome to the fun fun game of D&D!
Thanks, y'all! I really appreciate it. I have some friends that are in the middle of a campaign, and they suggested I come to the site since I've never played. There's a ton of reading materials until I play, if nothing else. I'm excited!
A half-elf ranger charlatan lol. Osmond "Oz" Isfotter. Illuskan father, Moon Elf mother.
https://ddb.ac/characters/89452955/YFNrrS
Thanks! I was trying hard to not just copy one of my favorite characters from my favorite book series (Ragnar Volarus in the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown), but I let myself go with Illuskan since they're basically large-ish wintry people
Oh, just thought of this.
Should I make multiple characters for availability sake, or just focus on the one until I'm completely comfortable with the game?
I'm brand new to dnd and want to have an experience similar to this video. First of all, what are they using to play the game online? Is this how most online dnd is played?
Seems easy enough to swap around while keeping the core of my character, yeah? Or am I thinking about it wrong?
Yoooo
🙌 yoooooooooooo🙌
I did a college project based on dnd, haven’t played in a couple years but now I really wanna do a campaign
I wish you the best of luck with getting some likeminded people together
welcome aboard
how can you run campaigns online?
roll20 and tabletop simulator
Or just discord and theater of mind
At it's core, the only thing you need is a way to communicate; a forum, discord text or voice chat, skype, teams, slack, etc
There is an article in the pinned links about playing online as well
can you connect roll20 to dndbeyond somehow?
There is no official connectivity between D&D Beyond and any third party app beyond Discord using the official Avrae bot
Good evening fellow rolists.
Can I have your opinions on a subject that divides me? Let me explain...
I m returning to TTRPG after some years of break, and i wonder what's actually better, purchase books on DnD Beyond or buy physical copies of it... especially when 5th ed seems to go to it's end with One D&D coming...
Actually it seems buying physical book dont give you acces to their identical counterpart on D&D Beyond, but maybe with One D&D things will change?
And buying 5th edition stuff actually with the "new edition" coming , for you, still a good idea ?
I really want to come back to D&D but cant decide myself between Physical copies or digital ones... and buying to play soon 5th edition books or wait some months to start with one D&D...
That's more of a #dnd-discussion question rather than a basics question (which is what this channel is for)
Oh, ok, i copy paste it in this chan , thanks.
Beyond 20 browser extension does this. It’s not officially supported and can occasionally cause issues with dnd beyond.
so if i create a character in dndbeyond, i cant use it there?
You can use the Beyond20 extension, but outside of that, no. They are separate services.
You can send rolls and spell info to the chat of roll20 via extension
can you import characters from dndbeyond to roll20?
yes, you can use the homebrew tools for roll20 to transcribe the DnD beyond stuff over
and also there is the extension
No automated import is possible but you can manually recreate the sheet
Yeah it’s a completely different service from DDB. The Beyond20 extension can help you use D&D Beyond, but ultimately if you need help learning how to use Roll20 you’ll need to go to them for aid.
i see
also you can buy the source books in Roll20, but double dipping is not always an option
Considering buying the sourcebooks on Roll20 even though I have the hard covers at home
What do
All the dices
Do.
I have watched alot of videos on dices.
Im going to eat some bread while waiting for answers.
Im tired
Could you maybe ask a slightly more specific and coherent question? That would make it easier for people to help you
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
Thenks
Issit required to have the full dice set or could you just roll with 4 d6's
basically d20s when rolling for skills/attacks/checks, and the rest are for the result, like how much damage did that attack do (the dice changes depending on the weapon)
The 20 sided dice is the most important one. Thats what you roll whenever you want to see if something is a success or failure. If you are making a Skill Check, or and Attack Roll, or a Saving Throw.
all of the other dice are typically used to determine how much damage something does. For example, a fire ball will deal 8d6 damage, which means you roll a 6 sided dice 8 times, and add them together. As the link that Spam posted says, whatever feature you are using will tell you exactly what dice to roll, so there is never any guess work involved.
D&D requires the full set. You can't really play the game with just d6s. There are other table top games where this works, but unfortunately not D&D
If you don't want to buy the full set, then there are perfectly good free dice rollers on the internet
Are there websites that has a free rolling software inside
yes. D&D beyond is one such site.
Oh kul
4 d6's are not equivalent to a d20, as the lowest and highest numbers do not match, nor the distribution of the probabilities
So whats with percentile dices being usually used in magic?
i'm not sure I understand your question
are you referring to a wild magic sorcerer?
Oh ye ye
Something abt wild magic
Wild Magic Surge
Starting when you choose this origin at 1st level, your spellcasting can unleash surges of untamed magic. Once per turn, the DM can have you roll a d20 immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a magical effect. If that effect is a spell, it is too wild to be affected by your Metamagic, and if it normally requires concentration, it doesn’t require concentration in this case; the spell lasts for its full duration.
and the percentile dice is used with that table to see what is the result of that surge
Percentile dice will give you a random number between 1 and 100.
Those are explained in the same link I sent above.
Percentile dice, or d100, work a little differently. You generate a number between 1 and 100 by rolling two different ten-sided dice numbered from 0 to 9. One die (designated before you roll) gives the tens digit, and the other gives the ones digit. If you roll a 7 and a 1, for example, the number rolled is 71. Two 0s represent 100.

oooohhhh i see, cool thank you!
You can make a post in #750812887697588356 and specify that you want to join a one-shot, and you can read through the posts in #looking-for-players to see if anyone posted one
it may help to use the discord search feature to look for the keyword "oneshot"
sweet i'll do that! Thank you!
how can i learn which weapons use which roll?
Right here, in the Damage column:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
It is listed in the weapon descriptions that spamandtuna linked
By some twist of fate, every player in the campaign I'm in (myself included) is about to enter a state where we're split up into solo campaigns for about two sessions.
This is the first time I've had to handle this as a player. Any tips for a bard going in?
if pc's approach an enemy, when do other enemies approach them to help their ally?
On their individual turns, if they choose.
(They may all share the same initiative count if they're all the same kind of monster.)
The DM makes one roll for an entire group of identical creatures, so each member of the group acts at the same time.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
hey im a new player i want to dm for a group of friends who are also new where do i start? These are online friends whats the diff btw roll 20 and dnd beyond?

Sorry, misread your post so you don't need those channels.
You can find some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel. I would recommend as a new DM checking out one of the starter adventures. Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on DDB
Roll20 is a Virtual Tabletop, which combines maps, character sheets and dice rolling. It supports many different TTRPG systems.
D&DBeyond is a digital toolset for D&D 5e, which gives character sheets and dice rolling functionality, but no combined map feature
i see, no matter the range?
Not sure what that quote has to do with range. Could you clarify?
like in a campaign, there is a cellar with 8 rats
would they all attack at the same time?
or is there a range for them to “group”
They would all take their turns at the same time, whether they use that turn to attack or do something else.
I would personally probably roll them as a group with the same initiative
(As a DM, I'd probably split that into two groups, despite the rule.)
Purely because dealing with 8 separate creatures as a DM would be a bit of a faff
I'm still not sure what range has to do with this, though. Range of what?
like if two rats are 100 feet apart, would they still act at the same time?
Yeah, their physical distance from each other makes no difference to the initiative order.
Especially since that distance can and likely will change as the combat continues.
i see, thanks
All that matter for turn order is your initiative score.
And if these rats are all using the same stat block, the DM would roll once to determine that score for all of them.
So if they roll a 12, all the rats take their turn on 12.
i'm also new from the other server,
just what are new places for newbie questions about anything ingame and rule questions as I do not want to bother my DM over every detail
(noticed that my DM was in this server not the other)
oops
this is the place
and #dnd-rules for the specific rules?
#dm-discussion and #character-discussion are these about what to do on table or what has been at the table?
or both
yeah. This channel is for the basics, like how to make an attack roll, or something like that. Its also where we pin most of the resources people need to get started.
#dnd-rules is for specifics and more advanced questions.
#character-discussion is for help filling out your character sheet and planning your character.
#dm-discussion is for DMs to discuss with each other anything related to running the game
each channel also has a header with the general topics for them
Also, #channel-guide will give you the rundown on everything, if you have more questions
hey im a kinda new dnd player im a level 6 rogue and would like to make some friends to play d n d with and also teach me the more complicated rules along the way please dm me if you would like to play with me sometime 😁😁😁
also while you get in touch with a DM you can ask any questions here
ok ty for helping me out😁
So I've just started playing DND and have played a couple games as a Fighter. How many games would you suggest before exploring other classes
Do you meet the minimum ability score requirements for other classes?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Prerequisites
You can try a new class every campaign if you want, or if you like fighter, keep playing fighter
non, you can choose any class as long as you are willing to learn it, there is no minimum session requirment for you to "unlock" some class or the other
when you say "a couple games" do you mean you've been playing one-shots and start over each time? Or are you in a long running campaign with 1 DM?
also if you are mid campaing you can talk to your DM and "retire" your current character and bring in the new one
One trial campaign and am in one right now.
I would recommend you learn that one class before dipping into another. Level 1 doesn't do anything until you reach level 3 (for most classes) where you pick your sub-class (think specialization).
typically speaking, if you are in a campaign, you stick with the one character until the game is over or they die. You can change character if you want and the DM allows it, but this considered abnormal, to some extent. Its not wrong per se, but just not traditional
For dnd beyond I’m gonna be a monk and I wanted to test how I’d select way of mercy cause I’m new to dnd beyond but I’m not sure where it would be in the class features unless you have to pay for it
way of mercy is a subclass from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, so you would need to either purchase that book, or just the individual subclass, to have access to it. Monks gain their subclass at level 3, so you would need to raise your character to that level to have access to subclass choices. If you have not purchased any content on the site yet, then the only option available would be Way of the Open Hand
Alright thank you
how do i even play dnd
Check the pinned messages of this channel ☺️
Does anyone have recommendations for an pre written beginner friendly one shot that I could use to maybe dm an one shot?
Opening of Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on DDB. Wild Sheep Chase is free on DM's Guild, but I have never run it
Wild Sheep Chase is a popular choice
Thx! I’ve done lost mines of phandelver. But I will look up the other one. If anyone else has any more recommendation, let me know and thank you.!
I think the publishers of Wild Sheep Chase have a few Pay-What-You-Want adventures. A Most Potent Brew might be another one I think
Ok okay!
does anyone know how to find a dm without tediously waiting for one to respond? i would prefer a game every other day but i can play every day and its just me and a friend, we dont like waiting every 3 weeks for a new session as d&d gets boring. anyone can point me in the right direction?
ditto
That’s a lot of work for a DM
You're gonna be hard pressed to find a DM that will run games every other day. I"m sure there are some out there, but I've never seen that outside of text based games.
ditto to just finding a DM not the whole 24/7 type thing
Hey yall can I run some D&D pc ideas by someone?
whats peoples opinion on the call of cthulhu campaigns?
like are they worth it type of deal
This channel is for discussing the basics of D&D, you want #non-dnd-topics
Hi
I find this to be unacceptable
Someone needs to name this channel "New Player Tavern" asap
D&D Newcomers seems suitable enough
Not as suitable though
Feel free to drop your feedback in #ddb-feedback
I am new and was wondering where is the Drow?, it shows it in the info section on dnd beyond
It's only in the Player's Handbook. It's not included in the free Basic Rules.
If you want to use the dark elf (drow) you'll have to have access to the Player's Handbook by either buying the book or just that playable race on D&D Beyond (for about $2)
So who all plays 3.5e
Most newcomers to D&D will likely be playing 5th edition
Ah,thank you
I honestly want to play some good ol d&nd, but voice chat these days, I can't join because I prefer chatting
playing at the same table than online feels very different
One of my players loves to chat about everything but the game itself and it irritates me because last session she paused the game for about two minutes to talk about her tv dying.
I told her next time to do it before or after the session but not in the middle of combat.
well, is there some chance of me playing in D&D in chat?
1d100 chance.
Welcome in!
Check out the great information in the pinned message on this channel
its so crazy how many campaigns are going on rn lmao
Sounds cliche but enjoyed some of the videos I seen
Will do
Is it tough to learn ?
It's like many games - the general mechanics are usually easy enough to grasp, but the finer details can be complex.
Recommend reading the free basic rules and then maybe watching some folks playing D&D, then try your hand at making a character (DnDBeyond makes it fairly easy), then find a group to play with.
As you play, you'll learn it.
hi, been a while since I asked questions on servers like this, will One D&D be digital based or both Physical and Digital?
Watched some games being played online … watched 8 hours of critical role ( I kno there voice actors) and I played ballers gate if that helps me with a starting point
Where do I find DndBeyond ? Is it a book or website
Thanks
you're on their Discord server (although it's now the official D&D Discord)
DnDBeyond is owned by Wizards of the Coast/D&D
Hi
I’m also just trying to get into D&D for the first time
I’ve wanted to do it for a while
Hello,
I'm attempting to get back into D&D again. I haven't played it in a while and I'm hoping to get back into it again.
welcome!
Hey Jack!
hi
Hi guys! Hope you are doing well!
If you got a sec to spare I would really appreciate some info about this server ^^'
Before I fully commit I wanted to know:
- how often games are based on GMT timezone (evening times)?
- how difficult it is to get into the game as tier 1?
- Are there any long term campaigns available?
what do you mean by tier 1? do you mean for a character who is lvl 1?
yup, sorry ^^'
fairly easy as most campaigns start at lvl 1
as for your other 2 questions you can probably find a group that matches that criteria in #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356, so either read though the posts or create your own. Also dont forget to check local DnD forums like FB and Reddit
Thank you!
I'm new but I started playing 3.5e
iam making a cleric chc rn and iam a bit confused
are my domain spells immediately added to my spell list or do they expand my spell list?
you could say they are permanently prepared, and doesnt count for the prepared spells for cleric
alr alr
Hello, things are weird
hello, how so?
Just different. Not unexpected with the change, still weird.
if a monster has a AC of 20, and someone has 25 damage, does it deal 25 or 5 damage?
It depends!
So generally before you do damage, you have to roll "to hit". This is called an "attack roll". If your attack roll "meets or beats" the enemy's AC (20 in this case), then you deal you roll and deal your damage!
This is a big departure from what you wrote so feel free to ask a follow-up/clarifying question!
so the damage is not reduced by AC if it hits?
Nope!
Something that might reduce the damage is a feature called "resistance", which will reduce damage by half if applicable.
i see, thanks
Hi, i am a new dm and in my last campain i aciddentally killed all my players with too op enemy... how can i choose the enemies better?
But i also wanna choose more interesting enemies and not just weak bandits or sth else
Do you have access to the DMG or other books?
In the DMG https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-adventures#CombatEncounterDifficulty can help. Xanathar's has https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/random-encounters
Milestone or XP for Curse of Strahd?
That's more of a question for #1029833015423143957 (the Curse of Strahd channel) but as a rule, the adventure will tell you how to level the PCs
Oh I'm sorry.
S'all good. No harm, no foul
Oh hey!! Cool seein ya here
hi
If the attack roll (1d20+bonus) is greater than or equal to 20, then they take 25 damage
See DMGrognerd's below
You can find the description of how attacks work here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
AC does not reduce damage
You roll to attack, if you roll above the AC, then you hit and then you roll damage
If a creature has an AC of 20, then any roll of 20 or greater hits. Then you roll for damage. Your attack roll has no effect on damage (unless you crit, in which case it doubles the damage roll).
This is completely incorrect
Apologies. Will strike through
What
It’s correct, but it requires the damage roll to be fixed, which is extremely uncommon
It is not correct. The results of your attack roll do not indicate how much damage is done
They didn’t say it did
If you have 25 damage you have 25 damage.
They said if 1d20 + mod meets or beats AC, the target takes exactly 25 damage, which would be correct if you had an attack that dealt exactly 25 damage
Maybe using something like a tempest cleric’s maximise
You really don't have to argue on my behalf. I'm only awake, and DMGrognerd's explanation is better than mine
They said "If the attack roll (1d20+bonus) is greater than or equal to 20, then they take 25 damage"
This is incorrect. The attack roll determines if you hit, not how much damage is done.
I mean, you can
Nothing in the rules specifies you have to roll attack and damage methodically in sequence
In fact, I think the rules suggest rolling both at once to save time
Attack roll = do you hit
Damage roll = how much damage do you do
However, it can cause issues with stuff that can modify to hit results etc
@slow jasper do you know what I meant by this
They didn't say they have a +5 to hit though. Just that they beat the AC of 20. so if they rolled a 17+3 that is 20 so it hits and then this fake attack happens to do 25 untyped damage
You can most certainly roll the attack die and damage dice at the same time.
Oh yeah, totally
It's always attack, then damage, with space in between for intervening effects
The original question is "if a monster has a AC of 20, and someone has 25 damage, does it deal 25 or 5 damage?"
AC has no effect on damage
Yea, and the answer is if 1d20+ attack mod beats AC, it deals 25 damage
AC is not reductive
Because it’s an attack that deals 25 damage for some reason
sure
You're both agreeing very aggressively with each other right now 😛
And that’s what Lion said
So let's carry on?
waits to be in a campain
Well you've only posted an hour ago, it usually takes a bit longer than that
Unless you’re a DM, lol
ok
Soooo Draconic Sorcerer cantrips and 1sts, any thoughts on what would be best? Making the character currently
You want #character-discussion
This channel is very much for the basics

@rocky tundra@hexed swan Please take any discussions of private game invites to private messages, thank you
No, that's not how this works
okie
sorry
S'all good
And to clarify, you should either post in one of the channels above (using the provided template) or reply to a message someone else has sent (via private message)
Asking random people if you can get an invite to their D&D game is generally speaking considered rude
Hmm, can I do a charisma roll in order to convince you otherwise?
I have +1 charisma on my character page
A DM may say there is no need to roll if there's no chance of success
This is one of those times
damn I should have specced more points into charisma
Wouldn't help, just because you can try anything in D&D doesn't mean you will succeed
And when success is impossible, the DM will often forgo a roll
fire bolt cause it's great, mage hand to do clever things with, shape water to make ice cubes, and uh maybe green flame blade in case you're down to using a melee weapon
can somebody help me find a nice group to learn and play with.
dawg look in the looking for players chat

generally before i even build a character i join a campaign, but i suppose it's nice to have them there for you when you need them.
ummm there's a good amount of classes, which books do ya have?
Hm? Which books? I lost my books back at my old house
damn that sucks :(( basic rules are free online and they have most classes. Lot of the subclasses come from Tasha's or whatever though
give the classes a read through, pick what you think you'd enjoy most
Thanks I need a reminder of the basic rules
Wow they’re a lot of good classes ngl
Welp, imma sleep. I’ll probably dream about it.
Hey, sorry to bother, but I am confused:
Does this server has a divider between paid and free games looking for players or no?
Yep, scroll up
ah i was very confused about damage
i think i understand now
i first roll 1d20 with my weapon modifier
if its higher than the ac, i roll for the weapon
then deal the weapon damage
is that correct?
Higher or equal
That’s pretty much it, yep
Your weapon mod is usually an ability mod like Str mod or Dex mod + your proficiency bonus
When you roll weapon damage, you get the die listed on the weapon, and the ability mod, but no proficiency bonus
And yeah, as pointed out before, a result of 15 against an AC of 15 is still a hit
Same at any AC
What do you mean by 'supposed'?
A powerful monster could one shot a level 1 PC easily
i mean it depends yeah
By the math, even some level appropriate monsters absolutely can
dont giant rats oneshot pc's?
But the idea is generally the party will be engaging in combats that are balanced for their level to make winning a possibility
I think you might be looking at this through the wrong lens
dont they do 1d4 + 4?
4 damage isn't gonna one hit any pc
A giant rat is a CR 1/8 monster which means each individual monster should not be a one shot risk for a level 1 PC
but i add skill modifiers to damage?
You add the relevant ability modifier
Skills have nothing to do with it
what are the differences between skill and ability here?
i think im using the wrong word somewhere
A skill is a category of actions that, when performing, you can add your proficiency bonus to
An ability is one of the six statistics you assign values to when making your character and a type of roll
There are three types of d20 roll; ability check, attack roll, and saving throw
yea i meant ability mb
If you're performing an action that falls under a skill, such as trying to convince someone of something (persuasion), if you are proficient in the persuasion skill, you can add your proficiency bonus to the ability you're rolling for the check
and the skill proficiency bonuses scale with level?
Your proficiency bonus does, yeah
Remember that proficiency bonus can apply to more than just situations where a skill applies
the skills don’t have their own bonuses, they just let you add your proficiency
Skills are just "if true, add prof"
im still confused about some weapon stuff, so i'll give an example:
lets say that i have +2 bonus for strength, and i have a 1d8 strength weapon. If my attack roll succeeds, do i deal 1d8 or 1d8 + 2?
1d8 + 2
1d8+2
which stat gives bonus to the attack roll?
attack roll is detemined with your proficiency modifier (which scales up over time) and your relevant modifier for the weapon
so for example, +3 proficiency and +2 strength, your attack roll would be 1d20 +5
your proficiency bonus/modifier is on your sheet at the top
ah, so i use ability bonus twice, once for attack once for weapon
Strength by default for melee weapons, however weapons with finesse weapons you can use strength or dexterity
Ranged weapons use dexterity by default, but thrown weapons use whatever ability you'd normally make a melee attack with
also, your proficiency bonus only applies to the attack roll if you're proficient in the weapon, so make sure to double check that
hmm, somewhat unrelated but do wizards/sorcerers use melee weapons?
class features will tell you which weapons your character is proficient in
they can, and some subclasses are good at it
bladesinger comes to mind
They can, but often they aren't very good at melee weapons and prefer to use their cantrips instead
so they go weaponless?
They can
They might have a simple weapon like a dagger, but only as a last resort (in most cases)
Things like Hexblade warlock or Bladesinger are magic weapon users who have bonuses to use their weapons
cantrips are also limited right? or can they cast how much they want?
Cantrips don't consume any limited resources so don't run out
They still require a specific type of action, so you're usualy limited to one or two per turn
Eldritch Blast being an example of a cantrip that Warlocks get which takes an Action to cast, but can be cast every turn
shout out to eldritch blast gotta be one of my favourite cantrips
so you choose some cantrips, and you can cast infinite of them without long rest?
Yep
no like i thought just like leveled spells, you could only cast a certain number of them without long rest
Nope, cast as much as you want given the Action economy
Heyo im trying to make a pretty crazy (and complicated) character for my 2nd ever campaign, im trying to make a Gloom stalker ranger with both CBE and SS at lvl 5, and im wondering the sequence of attacks i can make and whether dread ambusher can occur multiple times ie first attack and the extra attack. Or is it like First attack (+10 with SS/-5 to hit) CBE another attack with bonus action + dex mod, favoured foe (1d4) dread ambusher activates from the first attack also add 1d8 if hit, and then an extra attack that doesnt get dread ambusher
You want #character-discussion, this channel is for the basics
what are reactionary actions?
Reactions are a special type of action that can be taken in response to a trigger even when it's not your turn
For example, Counterspell can be cast in response to another creature casting a spell, or Feather Fall can be cast in response to falling
so they can only be used for specific stuff?
Normally the Reaction will specify what the condition for using it is
Reactions will always have a trigger, which can vary in how specific it is
Counterspell's for example is "which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell"
Have you read the basic rules?
All of this is explained in the rules and you might be able to get your questions answered quicker than asking here
They can be found in the pinned messages of this channel, and have been linked to specific sections in response to your questions
i see, ill try asking less obvious questions
Well it's more just about saving you time in finding the answers you need
@wooden furnace This is the channel for questions about getting started with D&D
There are some helpful links pinned in this channel to get you started ☺️
Note that we don't necessarily play "on" this server.
Not familiar with them - and this might be a better topic for #non-dnd-topics.
You can find the Basic Rules in the pinned messages of this channel ☺️
I've been eager to learn it but I don't have the time cause of too much school works but now that I'm finished with them I wanna learn
Thank you so much❤️
btw is it ok to join campaigns in the #looking-for-players even tho I have no experience what so ever
The post will/should say if it's not suitable for newcomers
But you can always apply and ask the DM
Okay thank you very much
Wow so friendly HAHA I got scared for no reaosn
We are only menacing if people ignore the rules ;)
okiee thanks
heyyy so new to dnd and i am grabbing some dice, don’t have a budget and i know some dice can get very expensive, and i want a nice pair to last
any suggestions?
there’s a site called rune foundry that looks pretty nice, are they any good?
More of an #non-dnd-topics question
I can't speak to Rune Forge's quality specifically, but they do look nice.
The cheapest dice I can think of are from Chessex. It's just a box of 7 dice and typically they're just resin with a single colour. Last time I checked, they were about $7 USD?
The best price of dice would be a "bag of dice"/"pound of dice" which I believe Chessex still offers? Maybe Wiz Kids?
This channel is more for onboarding newcomers to the game with the basics
hmm, i’ll check it out!
also my b
s'all good, no harm, no foul 🦆
also there is decent dice in ali express if you are not in a rush to get they might be a good option (might take over 1 month to arrive)
i’ll check those out too, i’m hesitate for aliexpress though, lots of scammers
just go with the ones with lots of reviews and purchases
yeah
Please move this over to #non-dnd-topics
no need, convos over anyways
Hi guys. I'm technically not a newcomer for dnd rules, but I not a native English speaker. I've never use English to RP before. Is this suitable for any campaign?
This server is english speaking, but we don't manage the games that people offer or run, so if you are looking for a game, you can ask the DM or make your own post describing this. You may even be able to find one in your native language
Right, thanks
also you might find local DnD groups, so extend your search to Facebook groups, reddit, local hobby shops and even libraries and coffee shops and bars as some places host game nights
I think I'll just look for some online one shots here. There seems no local dnd.player😂
Have you looked here https://locator.wizards.com/
I was told I was too old to play 😂
@gentle monolith please be more appropriate with how you phrase your questions
i mean idk how else to phrase it since that's what they were looking for?
that just seems a little strange and i wanted to know if thats common i guess
D&D is a game for a wide range of ages and groups can span generations
Iv watched a lot of videos and stuff on d&d for a while but iv never actually gotten the chance to play it, how would I find people to play it with or something like that?
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
think It is highly dependent on context, if its at an event at the local library/highschool etc aimed at bringing younger people into the hobby then its understandable, also if the table is conformed by an age group
Would that work if iv never played
Yep
nah it was on this discord, looking for age of a low number? Idk how to say it without it coming off as inappropriate
if you feel like you are ready to play, but want a beginner focused game, you can use these channels to look for/post about it. DMs will often post games with key words like "beginners welcome" or something like that. If you don't feel ready to play yet, feel free to ask any questions you have, and we'll be happy to help!
Would they help me with charater creation and all, I understand the rules and stuff I think just not how to roleplay or make a charater
the only thing I can say is that according Discord's TOS the minimum age is 13, anything else I would say block and report
Then don't say it
If you think something is inappropriate, raise it with the mod team via #moderator-support
again, context is super important. Maybe the DM was also a minor, and felt uncomfortable playing with adults, or something like that. If you think someone was doing something against the rules, you should post about it in #moderator-support, not here. If you were just curious if D&D has an age limit, it most certainly does not
The newcomer channel is not the place
yes, normally the DM/and even other players will help you with character creation if you need help, so if you have any questions feel free to ask, also session 0 is specially aimed at that, resolving all questions regarding the campaign and characters
thats what this channel is for. Please, ask away
spam away, this channel is for that haha
Ok sorry just wasnt sure
So another issue is, I'm in school most of the time so I'd have to do it arround that and stuff. How could I make that work?
And do I need to buy those big books? Because I kind of somewhat know the rules to play generally
@lean imp Do not post personal information, including age.
Oh sorry
all books, even including the core book (Player handbook) are nice to have but not required
as long as you have the free rules you are good to go
You don’t need to buy the books. People play while working full time jobs and what not.
You don't need the books to play as the Basic Rules are free. If you join a D&DBeyond campaign you may get other people's books shared with you digitally
the other thing is the eternal battle... scheduling!
Scheduling is the true BBEG of all games
scheduling is something you generally work out with the group you are playing with. Maybe you can player on weekends, or after school, or such. You're game group will have about 5-7 people, counting the DM, so you just have to find a time that works for everyone
Ok and lastly
Do I post in #750812887697588356 or just look through #looking-for-players for beginner friendly
And again sorry for all the questions
DM first, then Players
dont be sorry, we are glad to help
you can do both
You can post in #750812887697588356, but worth looking through the posts in #looking-for-players.
Remember that they auto-delete every 7 days so keep checking and you will find something ☺️
also dont forget to look into local groups like FB and reddit you might find a table faster if you extend your search
If you have a local gamestore, the public library in my town runs games. I know the local high school was working on it. You said you were in school, if it's college mine had a large gaming club that always had sign up sheets.
even some coffee shops and bars are hosting gamenights on slow days, so its also worth checking if there is anything similar nearby
I know this sounds dumb, but does DND function somewhat like a Dragon Quest-styled RPG? As in the level-up system.
Can you describe the Dragon Quest level up system? I'm a tad rusty
I've never played Dragon Quest unfortunately, so IDK how to answer that
DnD lvl up works as as you increase the level of a class, you gain the features and abilities of that class lvl + getting some more health based on the class and your constitution
Heyyo! Anyone new to DND wants help in making a character?
I can sit with you and go through and make you a character and digital character sheet! Just DM me!
do you have a DM (dungeon master) yet?
? I am offering help, not asking for it
AHH, sry misread that
I would like help actually
I have dnd beyond setup up and I have all the books I've only played one one shot but it's got me hooked lol I'm trying to dm or at least play a real campaign 😅
I got a very important question. Does anyone here actually play a Lord of The Rings themed dnd game? I know its very obvious and so on, but it might actually be interesting!
That's not really a newcomer question, it's more suited to #dnd-discussion

Cast a wide net. This isn't the only place to find games/players/DMs.
I've idled in there for a while without much luck
Support your local game store https://locator.wizards.com/
you can also post your own, as well as casting as wide of a net as possible by searching on alternative forums like facebook and reddit, as well ask local hobby shops etc
small town 😦 I'd need to drive 45+ minutes away
Try coffee shops, school college uni whatever put up a sign, If you build it they will come
Some coffee shops will even let you play games in them on slow days/nights. Play in a public spot and the clicky clack of the dice will make all the nerds come out of the woodwork.
even there are some dedicated TT cafés in some cities, who can give you books/dice and have other boardgames like azul/carcazone etc to borrow
I miss boardgame cafes.
Does anybody have any advice to new Dm's?
Dont overthink it too much. Know mistakes will happen. Let the players have fun, dont take away their agency. Dont stop the game to look up rules, either make it up on the spot or say you are going to rule it this way for now and look it up later
Run a module for your first time DM'ing, its easier on you. If making up stuff for the first time, start small. Single location and expand out from that as the story drives it
also remember that you dont need to pad every single thing out with lore and details, you can just to a hollywood facade and fill in the detail when necesary
do people post one shots alot to join? I've hardly seen any that arent like last minute
I see them sometimes
Any quick advice on making a character for discord dnd?
Also do people that post requests for joining a group to play get a dm for it quick or does it take a while?
It can take a while it’s not like a computer game lobby there is some planning involved in a game of dnd
Do you have the dnd beyond app?
Let me check
Yeah
I have a character down atm but I kind of want to make a new one since I’m getting back into dnd
I would say look for a game or a DM posting for players to their game and then talk things over once you join one. The DM may have a world where some classes are not allowed or it doesnt make sense for them to be there. But character ideas and traits can always be thought of beforehand, and then you can use those to help make the character when you have a DM and game to play in
We’re all weird
The hardest part is finding a game and group that fits with you. Thats why DM's usually hold session 0's to go over the game and talk to players to get an idea of what they want out of it and (hopefully) find out if people seem to be the right fit for the game they are running
Whilst your looking, start coming up with character concepts and ideas
Watch some YouTube on dnd, I recommend this play list https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L
Yep I mean the Venn diagram for dnd players and weird ppl. Is basically a circle
Who’s Ben? And why you drawing diagrams of him 😁
I am as confused as you are
Assuming they meant the Venn diagram but got autocorrected
Yup
- If you haven't played at all, watch at least a few minutes of some streamed games, professional or not. It'll give you the basic idea of how play flows.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions.
- Don't try to avoid mistakes. That's impossible. Do your best to learn from the mistakes.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
- Run a pre-written adventure or one-shot to get your bearings as a DM. Doing so will help you get some practice instead of having to first build a world (even a small one) and situation.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that all have a good time.
- Don’t try to absorb all the info at once so you’re ready. That’s like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.
Does anyone have any tips for new players? I’ve never played before and I’m gonna have a campaign soon with some friends who are gonna guide me through it over a discord server
We’re playing a short ‘dungeon crawl’
have you read the basic rules?
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else.
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
I haven’t been able to find them so not yet, I will in a little when I’m not busy. But thank you guys :)

Thank you
no need to read "everything" but I do recommend skimming it to get at least the general idea, and if you need to consult during the game to know more or less where you can find that info
Alright
Whats the difference between a hill and mountain dwarf
Hi all! I'm fairly new the DnD. I've played one session of a game before but want to get more into playing with others.
New to DnD going to local shop to learn this weekend. Any tips for beginners? Books to start
Tip: pick an uncomplicated class for your first couple of games to get a feel for all the other framework mechanics. Fighter, barbarian or rogue are good options. Stay away from spells.
Tip: read through your character abilities before each session to know what it can do BEFORE you end up in combat. Anything you don't understand, ask someone early.
Bring pencil and paper to take notes and have fun
Don't worry about the mechanics, just say what you want your character to do and worry about how the rolling works later
Tip: every player should have a Player's Handbook for basic reference.
A player should really have the Player Handbook, and getting Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is good too if your DM allows optional features.
Ahhh, don't spend $40 on a hobby you haven't played yet
Borrow someone else's book a few session and invest if you feel like it later
I've bought a "starter set" I guess is what I can call it. It's got a players handbook, character sheets and set of dice
That'll set you up nicely
I have no idea if this is a dumb question but is there like a default edition most people prefer
Currently, most people play 5th edition as it the current edition
Thought so
There are lots of people out there playing older editions as well, just the majority of the new players learning about the game these days are playing 5th
5E is the most recent, popular, and relatively easiest edition of D&D.
3.5E
You know something is hard when there's a decimal
(Well, to be honest I think Basic/Expert/AD&D was easier)
Glad I picked the right one when I chose one on the D&D website
There's so many layers I thought I was gonna make my own story but I think I'm going to use a pre-set while I learn how to dm properly
I'd like to use a pre-set for a character but all of them in the starter set are so... so lame
You can build a random character.
Is it possible to learn to DM without playing first?
There are plenty of prewritten adventures. The Lost Mine of Phandelver came with the original Starter Set and is now free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was made for new players and DMs in mind.
Yes. It's certainly easier if you've played but you can just start with being a DM
Yes, but I personally don't recommend it. I would suggest playing first so you know how the game, rules, and classes work.
Problem is none of my friends have played hah
Well, someone has to volunteer to be the DM then.
There's more responsibilities as the DM than as a player.
What is dnd beyond
It's an online app/website where you can have character sheets and digital books.
When you create a character can you have, like, custom spells or something like that?
A website and an app. You can make characters and read the books there. (some free stuff and others cost money)
Amazing
I already have a D&D Beyond account. Because I am super fancy.
I already own most of the 5E physical books but I have some of them digitally on D&D Beyond for convenience.
Hello
Actually, I'mma look in the starter set rulebook first
I really like the wording for the "What Is a Spell?" section, very beautiful.
Kind of. You can customize the existing spells by making them look different or changing the name, but mechanically they are still the same spells. Like "Fireball" can be "Heat Expansion" but still deal the same damage with the same area-of-affect and saving throw.
Flavour is free but always Ask Your DM [tm] first.
DM™️?
Aww, that sucks, because I had this whole character whose thing is that they can see into the future and past (but, like, not what will be the future, rather what could be the future and he has little control of when they happen, but can meditate to try and get one) and all apart of his backstory, or what will be when he figures it out himself because he's mysterious even to himself
No, I know what a DM is, I was making the ™️ a tm
Everyone knows what a DM is
clockwork sorc, divination wizard, spirits bard
?
Fair, sorry for the misunderstanding. But as far as I know, Wizards of the Coast has put a Trade Mark on the term "Dungeon Master" which is why others game systems use "Game Master".
you can reflavour them to fit that idea, but those subclasses provide good features to use for it.
Ahh, I'll take a look at those. His species is human, so which of those goes best with that?
Ha
What's so funny?
Genuine question
Are ability scores the big numbers for strength, dexterity, etc.?
The ones that range between 0-20, yes
Isn't it the ones below the big numbers that range between 0-20?
yes, and ability modifiers are the little number bonuses you get for having those big numbers or in some case little numbers.
16 strength = +3 modifier,
8 intelligence = -1 modifier.
10 Dex = 0
getting something higher then +5 is pretty difficult.
Yeah, the formula is (Ability_Score - 10) ÷ 2 and rounded to get ability modifier. There is a table that has the values in the Basic Rules as well I believe
12-13 =+1
10-11 = 0
9-8 = -1
7-6 = -2
OOOOOOO, I understand now
if your score drops below ten you'll start getting negatives. and the more you increase your score you'll get positives.

I love that emoji. It's so dumb and I love it.
It's likely the one i use the most and i absolutely love it aswell. feel free to steal it for your collection if you'd like! and glad we could help out.
Steal what? >.>
I am a big fan of thievery (in fantasy)
Is there a certain amount of skill points I have for the "Skills" part?
Or is there not?
Same with the saving throws
Hello! I’m new here. Are there any campaigns that are friendly to absolute noobs?
Yeh
No, you don't invest any skill points into your skills, when you make a character you choose or sometimes via story or other situations, you can become proficient in a skill. (will explain in a second) basically your skill ranks go off of, Your ability + if you have proficency or expertise in a skill. (expertise mainly for rogues but it doubles your proficiency in a skill, it's why they are really good)
(proficiency is a base bonus you get as you level up, can't remember the specifics on the actual numbers but say you are like level 6, you'd get a proficency of +3 that you can use towards all of the skills you are trained in, and saving throws. + your ability stuff) if that makes any sorta sense.
If I DMed for a 12-year-old I'd let them make up whatever nonsense they want, write it all down, then have it come back to bite them
It makes a bit of sense
ability mod + proficency = skill number.
if you don't have proficency its ability mod = skill.
Please ignore Ribcage, this place is open and welcoming to new people as we were all new once. You can browse campaigns in #looking-for-players and private message anyone recruiting for a campaign that interests you. The descriptions should say if they are noob friendly 🙂
Is proficiency bonus always +2 or does it vary?
It increases based on your character level. Starts at +2
Every community/fandom is toxic. All of them.
Ah, alrightio
What does inspiration mean?
Have you read the Basic Rules? You might get some of these answers quicker in there
I have read parts, but I don't like to read for long periods of time
Inspiration is typically an award that DM gives out that lets a player reroll 1d20 once
Sorry if that makes things inconvenient, black beer
Neat
It's fine, just wanted to check
Just don't expect us to explain all of the Basic Rules to you
inspiration is the "divine intervention please let me roll good so i don't get glassed by the fireball save i just failed. "
That's a question for your DM
Alright
The wizard pre-made sheet has a shortsword and that feels like a crime tbh
Interesting, wizards usually only get quarterstaff or dagger as part of their starting equipment. They mostly use cantrips as the main regular damage output anyway
I'm not giving him a dagger or the like because it feels like a crime
I'm not sure what you mean by "feels like a crime"; it's allowed by the rules
I'm saying it doesn't feel right
Then you don't have to do it
Wait, you can create a race in D&D Beyond??
Yes, you can homebrew one. Again worth checking with your DM first
I'm not going to, but it is quite cool
There's also homebrew spells >.>
Lmao
No homebrew, got it
Let's keep things appropriate, okay
That's not true, there are loads of posts in #looking-for-players with DMs allowing homebrew
Let's not propagate negative stereotypes and assumptions
Your experience, maybe
This channel is for helping newcomers with the basics and getting started. Let's avoid attempting to instill preconceptions that may not accurately reflect things
I'm going to go sleep now. Perhaps I'll consult you guys tomorrow.

You can make a character pretty easily using DnDBeyond’s character tool.
ok ill check that out what do you recemend to start playing
Whatever appeals to you most
ok i have some friends that would play but they haven't created there character's and what would you say is the best amount of people to play
4-6 players and a DM is pretty usual. But really depends on the group.
oh also how would you create a campain or do you have any links for campains i could download
Campaigns are just a term (usually) to describe a set of games/adventures ran by a group with (usually) the same set of characters.
ok
whats the difference between pact magic and spellcasting apart from the name?
DnDBeyond has a campaign tool to basically group the character sheets and provide a shared rolling log for the group.
im sorry for asking so many questions about the game im just new and would love to learn how to play
Pact magic is a type of spellcasting ability. Where other spell casters have a number of spell slots to use and cast spells at various levels, pact magic casters have a more limited number of spell slots and cast those spells at the level of the pact magic spell slots. But they refresh their spell slots on a short rest.
So other spell casters could upcast a lower level spell using a higher level slot, pact magic casters can not.
right im gonna go and read the rules and create my character illbe back later
nvm im dumb, i just never put the autoscaling spells and casting name togeth, I just thought that was a warlock thing lol
Pact magic is generally only a warlock thing
do you need a dice to create your character
yes, for stats
if so how many sides
DnDBeyond provides digital dice but yes, at some point dice is needed to play the game
Please read the free basic rules
unless you want to take point buy or standard array, but i wouldnt reconmend
ok
It explains how to build a character
can you create your own ( Campain )
Yes you can come up with your own campaign.
I’m not sure what the context of your question is though - come up with your own adventures to play? Create a DnDBeyond campaign so you can group your characters and see the shared dice roll log?
ok i allready have ides for an sdventure just to introduce very one i will invite to my party
If you’re being a Dungeon Master (person running the game/adventure/campaign) be sure to allow the players agency (choice) on what their characters do, but always focus on fun. If things are not fun, for you or the players, stop the game and discuss to get everything back on track.
Yes rangers can have swords
ok im just making my characters back story
They are proficient (skilled) with martial weapons like swords.
If you want feedback on your character, we have #1045165827068002374 (pick the non-optimization one for better general feedback)
ok can i tell them about my character to see if its good so far
go for it*!*
wait do you want to here my back story
You can post it here
ok illl tell you my back story
I am new to dnd and have a question to the Race ability score increases.
Im going to be a gnome and therefore would gain +2 to intelligence.
But i will be a forest gnome who also gets +1 to dexterity.
Do these buffs cancel each other or do they add up ? Because they are both called ability score increase i wasnt sure that they can stack.
thx
They add together as usually a character gets +2/+1 in ability score increases from their race
KiZan was an out cast in his tribe of elves. He was banashed at the age of 12 ( in his tribe 12 was considered an adult ) were he found a small tribe of humans who were willing to take him in till he was old enough to survive on his own. there he got mild bow and arrow training untill he was 16. he then went on to get some better sword training. he now lives in the village of Ucar.
that means i also get both special abilities of the race aswell as subrace right ? In my case that would be Gnome Cunning(Gnome) and Speak to small beasts for example (forest gnome)
what doyou think of my backstory
We do have #1045165827068002374 for sharing backstories and getting opinions
Hey everyone. I'm not a neeewwwww new player, been going for a few months, but just finished our first mini-campaign, about to start a proper one. Made a damage-heavy warlock.
why is the spell 'tiny hut' a evocation spell? wouldn't it be either a conjuration or abjuration spell?
That would be a question for #dnd-discussion
This channel is for getting started with the basics of D&D
I guess because the hut is 'real' wheras conjured stuff is usually ethereal?
im not an expert but it might lack a motivation. Why is your character doing all this ? Is he lonely and seeks to get back to his tribe or is he full of anger for being banished ?
how do you get your characters moves / attackes and stats
#880965682462875679 so you can go to the character discussion channel
I use DnD Beyond character creator, otherwise you can get a book and roll some dice.
what for the stats
Those are generally written down/noted during character creation. The class and race you choose determines specific abilities you may have, your DM decides how your stats are made, and the general rules for combat and spellcasting tend to fill in the rest.
were can i find the movs list
D&D doesn't have 'moves'
If you’re using the DnDBeyond sheet it will list your actions, bonus actions(if any), reactions (if any) and special actions/features there on the sheet.
You probably want to read the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That would be found in the basic rules, though it’s not referred to as a “moves list” in the game.
i'm looking at ROLL20. anyone use the other VTTs that they recommend more than another?
Foundry is very popular
I use to use Tabletop Simulator
As is Owlbear Rodeo
Fantasy Grounds too
I'm trying to decide between Foundry vs fantasy Grounds. Is it hard to find games on Foundry?
also heard some good things about Owlbear
what is the best way to find games on Owlbear?
You don't find games using Owlbear
Start one
It's a tool that some DMs may use
Owlbear is a map maker essentially. You can probably find games on here
How did I do one shots?
you do a campaign but like tiny in one session ideally
Run them as a DM or play in them as a player?
like a heist. heists are cool
As a player, I want to try a one shot to see if I have a handle on the mechanics
well then you need to find a dm running one
and generally the dm will tell you how their specific one shot works
Up till now I just been reading reddit stories about d&d and I want to play a session but I'm too anxious to ask for a DM
c.f. "five room dungeon"
There look to be a couple of DMs recruiting for one-shots in #looking-for-players right now
Well you'll never get a game if you don't find a person to ask. but if you do ask, there's always a chance it'll work out
I hope
lose 100% of the (one) shots you don't take
So do I check "looking for dm"? Or "looking for players"?
You read through #looking-for-players, and you can make a post in #750812887697588356
#looking-for-players has DM recruiting for games.
You can post in #750812887697588356 to seek a DM to play with.
Just follow the pinned template if you are making a post
What are good stats for a college of glamour bard ?
Generally the same for any other bard. If you check the Bard class, there's a "quick build" sidebar that says:
QUICK BUILD
You can make a bard quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity. Second, choose the entertainer background. Third, choose the dancing lights and vicious mockery cantrips, along with the following 1st-level spells: charm person, detect magic, healing word, and thunderwave.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#CreatingaBard
(emphasis mine) Hope that helps!
Ooo thank you!
Yeah, I would probably only swap Dex and Cha if you were doing a weapon bard instead of a magic bard
I'm pretty new to d&d (and by pretty new I mean that I only got to lvl 2 in a campaign... that's it) I made a warlock build with a lil bit of everything(and not much of anything) so it's not only bad in a thing, it's bad in everything
But I like to make art(maps, characters, everything)
Do you guys know a way of dnd that doesn't have sessions with like a fixed time(since I don't have time to participate) but I still wanna play dnd( some sessions like..... idk do the action on your turn whenever you want
That's how play by post often works
Oh
That's nice
And another question... What is a good class for newcomers, and i know this is hardly dependent on playstyle but what are some easy to master classes(I prefer not being the tank and maybe prefer not bonk as my main action but it it's good enoungh i'll take the bonking
bonk(mele attack)
Ranger you can stand back and twang ( ranged attack)
Cleric you can bonk and heal and cast spells too
Ranger sounds nice. But i've always had BAD characters (i mean that I died instantly) so does anyone know a site with character builds or something
I dont wanna be that guy (Only META) but I got bored on instantly dieing
Thats just bad luck
in general martial classes (Fighter, Barbarian, Ranger, etc) are considered to be new player friendly since they dont have (or have a few) spells
The folks in #1045166392174972938 can help you fine-tune your build.
Ah thank you guys
I thought the other way around
casters being new player friendly? They are not that hard but in general casters have more things to consider, and have lower AC and HP so they are not that forgiving
Yeah true
Marcial class have more HP and more AC so they can tank most damage
dont take me wrong, if you are a new player you can absolutely play as a caster, but I do recommend reading your spells beforehand
well... I had a player (lvl 1 high AC/HP paladin) who got 1 hit KO'ed by a bugbear crit, so even if you do have high AC and HP the dice can say otherwise XD
lol
Yeah but a lv 1 against a bugbear is kinda hard to stay alive but if we put a spellcaster like a wizard is most likely that it would get instakill with no death save
it was the BBEG of that session, so it was supposed to be hard, but not impossible, if it hadnt crited it would have been fine, but it did. And TBH unexpected outcomes are the best outcomes, the paladin was the veteran player on a table for beginners so they all entered in panic. Because at that point they didnt had much issue with the encounters
Whats a BBEG
Big Bad Evil Guy. Usually means the final boss or the endgame villain a campaign is working towards.
ooh thanks
Hello, when we started our campain i came late and someone stole my Frost Greatsword (+1d6 frost damage\hit)
And i could have only the berserker's axe, that give a +1 to rolls and +1 to damage
and a mithral armor
Since im a paladin vengeance path, you think i can make some use of that axe? berserker status do nothing to me right? i mean no bonus?
How does someone steal your weapons?
we were continuining a campain of last year and master redistribuited some magic items between us (we changed chars) and so first come first serverd :\ but thats i mean is ok.. he might die.. i might get that back ahah
im reading that i might be able to remove the curse of the weapon, in that case it will still continue to have the +1+1?
can i show my character i build in a specific channel? i want to see if my first attempt was good in any way
thanks ones again
Is it just me or for beginners dungeon master's when the paladin reaches level 2 the game becomes about 5x harder to balance. Damn you devine smit
How many encounters are you running between rests? Paladins don’t have that many spell slots at level two.
While sleeping, magic, effect of something, etc
3 or 4
See the problem arrives when the big bad evil guy is undead and there hitting it with 32 damage at level 2
Bump it up to the suggested 6-8 between long rests and you’ll likely have an easier time. 3 or 4 can be okay, but you’d need them to be deadly to maintain balance, which can make things real swingy.
Thanks for the tip I'll be sure to tell my dm
There are 2 ways to solve this, you can put a bunch of enemys and force him to use smite or not many enemys but they are way stronger with more HP
Admittedly a Paladin can buff the party a whole lot more effectively with a Bless, but if they wanna to nova then they’ll really shine at key moments, especially against undead. I’d say let them take the W and learn as you go along.
Interesting, that looks pretty cool. We've planned on using Discord and Avrae but that could be a good secondary option. Thanks!
Are the homebrew sheets that begin with "Sorcerous origin" subclasses or subraces ?
because i can't differentiate them
Sorcerous origins are the subclasses for sorcerers, I believe.
this is correct
The same as normal attacks, just roll a d20 and add the modifier
yeah but i don't know how to calculate the modifier bonus
Proficiency bonus plus spellcasting ability modifier
Whatever feature allows you to cast that spell, be it your race, class, or a feat, will tell you which ability modifier to use (or tell you which ones you can pick from). You take that ability modifier, and add your proficiency bonus. Then roll a d20, and add them all together
I see thanks y'all
Yo I'm playing an Icewind Dale game next week; I know little about the setting, but I have a character prepared but I just need a backstory. Can anyone give me a primer of sorts for the campaign?
That's not really a question for this channel. You should really ask your DM what you need to know
I don't know my DM's contacts.
Wait how do you schedule games with your DM, then?
Hello im new to DND and wish to learn
What do you want to know ?
I played a one-shot with him previously, they've invited me to play in an Icewind Dale game they've already begun.
Did they invite you in person?
Yes.
Ah. You may want to figure out how to get their contact details then.
I'll see what I can do.
the basics
better call veterans

Ty!
what is the best starter martial weapon for a paladin? preferably warhammer like. i'm creating my son's character on D&D beyond and really don't wanna dig my books out of storage or open another tab to compare everything. sorry.
hi!
nvm looks like it's just "warhammer" wasn't sure if that'd be an option and it'd have some weird name like mace.
Any suggestions on a decent campaign guide I can have my 14 year old run? She's DM'd a couple one shots already. The starter kits are out because shes played through them all at least once and so has our whole group.
Strixhaven could be super fun since it’s a magic school! Also recommend Ghosts of Saltmarsh if you want more of a seafaring campaign.
Maybe Dragon Heist? It’s not as long as some of the other official ones. Or maybe Witchlight.
Me and my friends want to start a campaign. Any tips on how to start and go about it?
Start in a tavern
It’s always easier to start with a campaign that takes you through the first few levels— then, by the time you reach the end, you can homebrew if you’re feeling confident or pick up another adventure! Dragon heist is a fun one for a quick level 1-5 starter. Beyond that, find out what each of you want from the game (like, combat, roleplay, or a 50/50 split!) and talk about what kind of things you DON’T want to come up in game. Make the characters you think you’ll enjoy and have fun!
I’m also always a huge fan of incorporating maps to some degree if you’re doing more combat, whether it’s digital, projector-levels of fancy, or just paper taped to the back of a monopoly board with the play tokens as the characters!
Hey! Was wondering if I should buy a physical kit or use D&D beyond for my first game.
So first make a decision on whether you want to invest in physical or digital.
Physical: doesn't need power, but can be heavy and hard to transport, can fill up your bookshelves (and some people just prefer print to electronic reading)
Digital: as long as you have internet, you have access to what you bought on DnDBeyond, updates/corrections can be automatically pushed out so you always have the latest, less expensive, but downside is you do need power and internet.
Also DnDBeyond does sell items a la carte so if you want to just purchase specific classes, races, items, or spells but not buy the whole book, you can do that. What you purchase is deducted off the book if you do eventually decide to buy the book.
Ah, so I would assume you are recommending digital to me? I would agree since I have played games like this a few times. Finding that actual amount of damage in combat is fairly hard, but digitally it does it automatically.
I like digital for the ease of access and functionality but I also understand it's not for everyone and there is a real concern about what would happen if WoTC/D&D decide to pull the plug on DnDBeyond for whatever reason (even though they own it).
And yes DnDBeyond's digital tools can help you get up and playing much more efficiently IMO than paper and pencil and physical book.
I suppose people have their reasons for removing things, I won’t point any fingers because that may cause controversy but it has happened before. Anyways, thank you for the recommendation!
head in HANDS i wanna play this game so bad‼️
this is not any kind of cry for anything i just want 2 play D&D so bad and i need to scream about it
that is all <3

Hello fellow noobs who else has the joy of being a first time DM?
I don't...
I am a first time player and our party is first time including my DM
We're school friends and we have had 2 sessions
He tried the lost mines of phandelver
And got confused partway through
He said it would be easier for him to start his homebrew
He was gonna use lost mines of phandelver to get us to level 5 then do the homebrew
He is very hardworking and enjoys being a DM
Sometimes i just think
How can I be the best player for this dm? How can I make his DM skills feel so much more fun? How can I engage and make him feel happy?
i guess engaging with the dm?
How do i start a campaign?

Hey I’m new here. New to d&d too. I have started a campaign recently and have a few questions I can’t seem to find anywhere apparently lol.
ask away dude
I’m a high elf and it states in the players handbook that as a high elf you have a keen mind and a mastery of a least the basic of magic but it doesn’t state anywhere what magic… I understand we have darkvision but I’m not sure that’s magic so to say
I’m currently working on my backstory which is a very very interesting one
i mean, you do get a cantrip from the wizard spell list, i think?
and lorewise, they're just magical in nature ig bcs of stuff
elves.
it might just be j.r.r tolkein's way of spelling it though
since i heard once that he and his publisher got in an arguement about the spelling of dwarves, where the publisher thought that it was supposed to be "dwarfs"
I’m aware there’s a cantrip list. Can I use more then one? I thought If was just one from that list.
@past root I'll try to keep you safe with my tiefling rogue 🙃
Our DM has already saved another high elf in our group, she was literally dead!! Lol
Twice 😂
It was their 1st ever season thou
It does say only one, but as dunl said it can prove to be pretty useful at times
Prestidigitation would be a good one to pick
I’m trying to work out which is going to be the best one.
What does that do?
Ranger.
I get to choose one there don’t I?
Of my choice
Yeah they don’t, like paladins
Your cantrips are your weapons.
I figured out how to make it work.
Brazen about what?
So yeah, one cantrip from the wizard spell list. Some more recommendations would be toll the dead, mage hand, and mind sliver
Thank you for your help.
Yw dude
It means your character is trained/skilled in that weapon, skill, or feature/trait and can add their proficiency bonus to the roll. Proficiency represents your skill and experience to a degree.
what is the "hit" bonus?
So your weapon attacks take the attribute modifier (usually strength do melee, dexterity for ranged) and add your proficiency bonus (if you are proficient with the weapon) to generate the “hit” bonus for the weapon.
It’s commonly called attack modifier
its just plain extra damage?
Well, the attack modifier applies to the attack roll, while the damage only uses the ability modifier for extra damage.
And the damage is determined with a different die/dice
So damage dice + ability mod. for attack damage
It doesn’t use the proficiency bonus on attack rolls
where can i see the attack modifier?
^^ @eternal edge
isnt that the damage modifier?
No it’s not
That’s the roll you use to beat the target’s ac, to determine if you hit them or not
The damage modifier is only the ability modifier associated, unless told otherwise @eternal edge
Can you entangle a beholder?
Beholders don't have immunity to the restrained condition, so yes
i think im still confused
so i have the attack modifier, and the damage modifier?
attack roll is d20, where i try to beat enemy ac
damage roll depends on weapon (like greatsword being 2d6 + 2)
is that so?
i add the hit modifier to damage roll
but do i add anything to the attack roll?
do cantrips count for the "spells known" limit?
They do not.
But check your class' table to see how many spells (cantrips and leveled spells) your character knows at any given level.
i'll go from an example then, if i have a level 4 bard, i have 8 spells known, but the total spell slots i have are 9. Am i unable to expend all my spell slots then?
or does that mean i can only cast 8 unique spells, but can cast the same spell twice if i have the required spell slot?
Spell slots are basically the resource you have to cast your known spells. Say if you’ve got Dissonant Whispers you can cast that as many times as you want provided you have the spell slots of the appropriate level. You could use all your slots to cast that spell as many times as you’ve got spell slots for, for example.
so its the second one i said?
Yeah it’s the second.
i see, thanks
Also many spells can be upcast - meaning you can cast a level 1 spell as a 4th level spell if you have the slot. Some spells have additional impact (more targets, more damage dice) when upcast with a higher level spell slot.
also, do cantrips have classes, or can all classes choose a cantrip if they have a cantrip slot?
Your class determines what cantrips you can pick.
A base Bard couldn’t take Toll the Dead for example.
Cantrips belong to schools and exist on spell lists
A bard can only pick cantrips from the bard spell list for example
can you change the cantrips during long rests?
All of this information is described in the various class sections
It depends on what class you're talking about, what optional rules you're using etc
Generally no. They are locked in from the point you choose them. There are some optional features depending on your dm that let you change single cantrips on a level up though.
Hi so new DM here, I was wondering if anyone know where I can find large page graph paper for making encounter maps? thanks all!
Some wrapping paper have grids on the back, it's one of the cheaper options for map creation
thanks but im hoping to find something thats meant to be drawn on and is flat if anyone knows of an option of that.
I'd check your local arts and crafts stores and see what they offer.
Hey guys… can I ask some advice? I’m wanting to get into D&D but have no idea where to start or what to do
Back in college, I taped a bunch of grid paper together and then ran it through a laminator at a office supply store! This meant I could draw on it with dry erase markers!
Hi there! Welcome! Have you checked out the links in the pinned message here on the channel? It has lots of useful links to help get you started.
I do recommend reading the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Hi, yeah I’ve read all these. My main struggle is figuring out how to create my character and make that character work
Do any office supply stores still do that kind of thing? But thanks I'll look into it!
Yeah I think office supply stores would have graph paper
Mine do, so hopefully so do yours! Good luck!
Well the first chapter of the basic rules goes through the step by step process of building a character. I'd start there. I also recommend trying out DnDBeyond's character builder - they even have a mode that helps explain the steps for new folks.
That’s what I’m currently doing. But how do I figure out what race, skills, weapons ect are good for the character that I want to build?
So... here's the thing. It's a game. So pick what sounds fun to you (although you do want to work with your DM and other players to make sure your character will work for the game you'll be playing).
So I don’t just make 1 character and that’s who I play with?
I want to make a magic based character who’s got great dmg, and sustainability but also can support the group
No idea if that’s possible
It depends - some groups you have one character and only play with the character for the whole campaign. Other groups have you roll up several characters and some are used frequently for the main campaign (game) and the others are used for one-shots (single session or limited number of sessions to tell a specific story).
So what’s the easiest way to play this game? Because it’s a lot to handle lol
This sounds like a cleric or paladin. Paladin if you really like outputting damage. Cleric if you prefer buffing and healing the party and otherwise supporting them.
So like In video games I like characters who are warlocks or have powers like Dr strange and Scarlete witch ect
First start by getting a feel for the game rules and maybe watch some streams/YouTube of folks playing the game.
Then try your hand at making a character to kind of see how the rules work with the character sheet.
Then go find a group to play with.
Using a the dndbeyond character generator helps figure out some of the numbers involved
Given what you've said about wanting a magic-based character who has sustainability, you can effectively cross out some of the classes with low hit die and go from there
Is there a character like Dr strange or Scarlett witch?
Not specifically - you could do sorcerer or warlock and flavor it like those characters.
Is there a go to YouTuber or twitch stream to watch to learn?
But I think starting off with primary caster class may be a bit complex for new players due to having to learn and manage spells.
But certainly fun.
Dungeon dudes have a good play list for starters
Dungeon Dudes is a good choice - in their Dungeons of Drakkenheim campaign they stay pretty true to the rules even in their homebrew setting.
Thank you guys! I’ll do some research and watch some videos and hopefully be back soon 😂
does a character's spell dc show what the enemy must roll to save it?
Yes
whats the hit/dc thing? is that your normal proficiency bonus?
Have you read the basic rules? Many of your questions are answered in them.
