Hello, i recently built a dragon born bloodhunter and when i hit level 3 i chose order of the profane soul as my order but under otherworldly patron i cant choose anything, am i not able to play this option as a dragonborn?
If you check the subclass list again, you should see multiple versions of that. Try selecting the (INT) or (WIS) version.
Hello, i recently decided to play DND, so i created a DND character to play with my friend but they left me on read so im very confused and i donno exactly what im doing and were im supposed to go. so if someone could help that'd be great.
What kind of help are you looking for, exactly? Did you have any specific questions?
all in all i just wanna know how i can start, and how to join a campain
Gotcha! We've got a bunch of helpful starter links here in the pinned messages. Those should get you up to speed, but we're happy to answer any questions that come up, too.
And then we've got a few different channels to help you find a game. 👇🏻

So I'm still figuring out how DND works as a whole, but I've got a character and I want to know if I'm using too many items for my character. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/83043066
Here's the link to my character, the reason I have so many items is that he's meant to be a theif, one who likes to nab objects that he might find useful for a major heist. Almost all of the items have a reason for being there, but I wanna know if a DM wouldn't allow me to have all of them because I'm only lvl one.
My character's idea is that he's an somewhat infamous warlock theif who traded some valueable item to a mysterious being in exchange for his skills as a theif, which he wasn't born with. He takes what he finds useful for his trade and uses his magic and a majority of his items for trickery, illusion, and to get out of sticky situations.
Usually your character starts off with just the basic starting equipment their class and background provide them and nothing more.
A Dungeon Master can let characters take more depending on the game/campaign they will be in.
Alright. I didn't know if I could bring any of that stuff in due to my character's particular background, I figured it'd be fitting of him to carry around a few extra objects that he'd stolen over time. Should I get rid of the extra items, or lower how much I have on me, or?
I'd get rid of of it all and just start with the basic starting equipment your class/background provides for now.
Alright, I'll get rid of them.
Ok, I think I've got rid of everything I added manually.
The rest I got from choosing out of the original build menu.
That's not to say you couldn't potentially start with additional items, just that you should have that conversation with your DM first.
Hey guys I'm new to dnd and have just made a character, was curious if anyone was willing to go over it in dm's and possibly give a few pointers!
If you'd like character feedback, you can share a link to your character in #character-discussion and folks there can provide feedback.
Ah totally missed that thanks!
are there peeps that meet up that dont require a payment to play?
Yep. Many D&D games are among friends and there's no payment whatsoever involved other than the exchange of time and effort to get together and play a game together.
i meant for online playing, i understand the 0 cost in person
Yep - many online games that are free as well. That said trying to coordinate a bunch of strangers can be a bit more challenging than working with people you already know.

i dunno if this would go into #character-discussion or here but. im making a goliath barbarian and just did a bit of research on it, im using dice rolls for stats should i put my highest roll in strength or con
Either strength or con is good - I think I'd lean strength myself.
thats what i thought as well thanks
The Barbarian quick build instructions suggest this:
First, put your highest ability score in Strength, followed by Constitution.
Is it possible to make a character who uses illusions only?
Might depend on what you mean by “only”, but sure.
There’s the School of Illusion wizard, for example.
A great many character concepts are "possible", but will have varying degrees of usefulness in actual gameplay. There's no single standard for gauging what's useful or effective when it comes to character building, it depends on your group and what you want to get out of the experience. So if you plan to make a character that's either very non-traditional or very specialized, be mindful of what their limitations might be and if that's something you & your group will enjoy.
Arcane trickster 😌
Arcane Tricker Rogues can be quite fun, so I guess it goes back to what you mean by "uses illusions only"? Do you just mean that's the only kind of magic, or do you mean they won't even use weapons?
magic. Illusions and sneaky stabby
Then sure, that's pretty much the nature of the Arcane Trickster. Illusion(and Enchantment) magic to distract and confuse the enemy, then come in for the stab/slice.
cool beans but on dnd beyond there is no option to pick arcane trickster ._.
When using the character builder, you only have access to the options in the free Basic Rules, the sourcebooks you've purchased on D&D Beyond, and the sourcebooks being shared with your campaign group.
I believe the only Rogue subclass in the Basic Rules is the Thief
So I get it while Im in the campaign or do I get a book?
Depends on if the campaign has content sharing turned on and if someone has the book. You can also buy that particular class on its own
If you do buy it individually, whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
If you're part of a campaign group on D&D Beyond and someone in the group has a Master level subscription, they can enable Content Sharing, so you can access their sourcebooks. But you can only use them in a character you've created FOR that campaign. Otherwise you need to own the books yourself
D&D beyond allows you to purchase things a la carte such as Arcane Trickster under the Player's Handbook: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
Alternatively, if a DM invites you to a campaign with content sharing on, you have access to the things they own.
Ok good to know thank you. Ill go buy books now
@cloud sierra how much weight are u carrying
I am level 3 warlock and 2 paladin - So my character level 5 does that mean I get the second beam from Eldritch blast or do i need 5 levels in Warlock?
Hello everyone
it goes by total character level not class levels, so a total level 5 character would get that second beam
If a cantrip of yours increases in power at higher levels, the increase is based on your character level, not your level in a particular class.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/customization-options#Spellcasting
Thank you 🙏
Hello
I hope I'm asking this in the appropriate section. If I have the hard copies of official D&D books, can I add that to my profile/account some how? I would like to generate a character but with a different race that is listed in the "create a character" section. How do I unlock that content?
If this belongs in #character-discussion, I can move that there.
You cannot, no physical books for D&D feature, or have ever featured, redemption codes for D&D Beyond
To use the content, you would need to
- buy the whole book
- buy the individual elements
- join a campaign where the content is being shared
- enter the content into your own personal homebrew collection
It's a shame there's no easy way to add books you own, but I understand why.
When you say "buy the whole book," does that mean only the copy that is on the dndbeyond website?
(I got the answer to my question: yes.)
do you guys do live games on this server
We have a couple chat rooms that can be used for live games, but most people tend to create their own server (or use something other than Discord altogether).

Hi everyone
yo
So I’m new to all this
Ah, i see
Kinda gotta a clue of what class I want to play but I don’t know where to start really
Well, im sure that there are people much more qualified to help you along the way, but what i would say is
Dont overthink it, and just pick a class that you would enjoy playing the most
All of the classes do cool stuff, so I recommend picking whichever one catches your eye for now. You can always (and will!) make more characters so you don’t have to make the first one perfect.
Some of the classes are a bit more "beginner friendly" than others, but the way level progression works, you only start off with a few things to keep track of and gradually add to your repertoire as you go, so hopefully you'll be getting more comfortable with how to play your character as their mechanics get more complex.
Alright sounds good I started with a Paladin
They can be a lot of fun. You get a little magic, a little healing, and you still get to thump people with weapons 🙂
So do the dice work
Not sure what you mean
With the dice rolls
Do you mean the digital dice on the D&D Beyond website?
Yeah
For the most part. Attack rolls and basic damage work fine, I don't know if they've implemented an automated way to roll for Divine Smite, but you can do manually created rolls too. If you're in a campaign group on the website, your rolls can show up in the campaign's game log, and you can use the Beyond20 browser extension to link to a virtual tabletop site like Roll20 so the rolls you make on D&D Beyond will show in Roll20.
What the digital dice don't do well are situational modifiers, like if someone has cast Bless on you, I don't believe there's a way to have the digital dice add the 1d4 to your attack roll automatically. You have to roll a d4 separately and add them up yourself. Or some characters have abilities that let them add an extra damage die, but only once per turn. The digital dice don't have a way to tack that on. Hopefully in time Wizards will increase the functionality, probably as part of their plan for a proper Virtual TableTop of their own.
Thank you I starting to make a little sense
When you read the entire rulebook with no prior experience, it can feel overwhelming. But 5th Edition has made it easier than ever for beginners, so just take it a step at a time.
I'll be honest I'm more overwhelmed by asking to join a group as a complete newbie
Yeah, finding a group, especially one you have chemistry with, can be tough. You will often find LFP(Looking For Player) posts that explicitly welcome new players, though. Just remember at the end of the day, D&D is supposed to be fun. Many people suffer through an unpleasant gameplay experience because they're worried if they leave the group it'll be too hard to find a new one. In my experience, it's rather worth trying to tough it out. I'd rather have no D&D than bad D&D.
Yeah I think what it is is I need to find a cool DM that's willing to explain stuff to me while I go I mean I know the bare basics
Hello, fellow players! I'm... fairly new to D&D, my cousin had introduced me to it and we live a good while away from each other, but he told me to come here, so here I am! If there are any DMs or anyone out there willing to show me the ropes, I much appreciate it! Just DM me
Sosiska: First things first. Do you already have a party?
That affects the relevancy of the advice so
Nope, I just sent a post in looking for a dm
Ah, very good
Well, first bit of advice would be to make sure your DM and all the players are on the same page. Session Zero is very useful, if a game doesn't run one then you should run away really fast
So, session zero is like, getting to know each other and cleaing up questions abt the setting and stuff?
As well as what players expect, what they want to see, what they don't want to see
Setting as well as themes, but yes
Ok got it
Don't be afraid to talk to your DM as well. If you're not running an AL game then most DMs will be willing to consider overruling the official sources or introducing new ones
Finally, if you wind up with a bad DM or a bad party, don't feel like you have to stay. Not having a game sucks, but it sucks less than having a game you don't enjoy
Thank you, that was helpful
Glad it could help
it? I can't tell if that was a typo or not
Oh I was referring to the advice not to my person
Any case, good luck!
Thanks!

So I’m in college and In a group of new players as well. Money is a bit tight is there anything good we can use for a dungeon/combat map
Dungeonscrawl is a useful online program to create custom battlemaps. It's entirely free.
I am curios if there exist any one shot dnd game which can be used in birthay for example.
I don't think there are any officially published adventures designed for a single session, but the DMs Guild website probably has quite a few
how do i play bc i made a character but idk what to do now lol
D&D is a game that you play with other people so the next step is find people you'd enjoy playing with
Its largely dependent on the DM to run the game, of course, but the other players are also people you want to be on the same page with
I posted this in General but should most likely have been here. Just general DnDbeyond question: Can a player in my campaign use his homebrew content?
Yeah, if Homebrew Content is enabled for that character, they should be able to select anything in their My Homebrew Collection.
Thanks 🙂
Hi there! Just a quick question about a spell.
Sacred flame has a Hit/DC DEX 14
So that means it will hit unless the enemy throws a dex save 14?
That's correct. If they fail the Dex save they take the damage.
May I ask how multiclass works?
Can i multiclass as a wiz and sorc? If i did... How would the spellcasting work?
Basically, whenever you level up you can choose to increase your level in an existing class, or take a level in a new class. Chapter 6 of the Players Handbook and the Basic Rules covers multiclassing. There are certain ability score minimums you must meet, and combining two spellcasting classes is probably one of the things that confuses new players more than anything else. With Wiz/Sorc specifically, keep in mind that you'll be using Intelligence to cast some spells and Charisma to cast others, so you'll want BOTH scores to be high. Short version, you prepare your spells from each class as though you only had the levels for that class that you've taken, but your spell slots are calculated based on your total level of spellcasting classes.
So basically... I have 2 diff spellcastings per class and i can use spells from both classes depending on what I prepared?
Not sure what exactly you mean by “2 diff spellcastings”.
You might have two different spellcasting abilities: INT, WIS, and/or CHA. You might not. It all depends on what classes you take.
Oh... I mean like... I have a wiz spells and sorc spells...
In that specific case, yes.
A wizard + artificer would only need INT.
A sorcerer + bard would only need CHA.
Hahaha im fine with my stats... My character has both Int and Cha as her highest
UwU but thanks for answering!
You can find the full rules for multiclass spellcasting here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Spellcasting
hello im new here..and i need someone to teach me how what etc xd
Well first check out the pinned messages - lots of good links to help get you started
I do recommend reading through the free basic rules, then maybe watch some videos of people playing D&D, then maybe try creating a character to get a feel for how the rules work with character sheets, then get together with a group to start playing.
The only caveat when it comes to watching videos of other people playing, if it's for a show like Critical Role or others like it, they may be less faithful to the rules for the sake of entertaining their audience. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, the primary goal of the game is to have fun after all. But just keep it in mind if you're watching for the purpose of learning the gameplay mechanics.
Yeah, plenty of games use their own house rules in certain scenarios. But it's highly improbable that any will 100% play to the absolutes of Rules as Written - be it misunderstandings or missed rules, or flat out "We changed that rule"
Hi
Good afternoon. There should be some pinned messaged that can help
Hello everybody, I have never played D&D and would love to start. I have however played lots of RPG games.
how do we hook up online for a game?
ah ok! do we need dice and a rule book to play?
There are lots of useful links pinned in this channel that cover getting started with the game
I'd suggest checking those out!
depends on your DM! I started with an online roller and a dndbeyond character sheet 😂 but agree with Davyd, the links are super helpful and a DM who is experienced with playing with new players is golden, too!
cheers for the info guys
I know 0 rules of D&D, just made my first character and I'm joining a club next week... what should I memorise?
We will have our d&d beyond character sheet PDF printed and next to us but wont be using the app in any way
Make sure you know the basics of your character. Basics of advantage & disadvantage, how you attack, how your skills work, spells, if you have any. Most of the stuff, you can figure out on the go - but know the details of how to do what you want to.
Are any of these shown on my character sheet?
@magic lake Some if it, yes, but it's best to understand the details of how it works. What class did you choose?
Easy, you don't have to worry about spellcasting.
Your AC (Defense), and what you need to roll to attack (Offense) should be on the character sheet. Your skills, or what you do outside of combat, should be set on the character sheet as well.
Oh nice thanks 🙂
One last thing before I'm done: how does levelling work when in person the whole time?
Everything will be just on the sheets and so how would I level up and how do I know what that levelling actually does to me?
I've found that once you have enough XP to level, or you've hit the milestones necessary, the DM and or other players will usually walk through the process.
If you pull up D&DBeyond, you can just "manage" your character and increment the level there, and get an idea of "how" leveling works. That's probably the easiest.
Ah ok, thanks for your help and time 🙂 imma sit and read the free books for a bit and see what I can pick up from there too. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it 🙂
Absolutely. I'd read up on actions you can take during combat, advantage, & disadvantage... attacks of opportunity... Those are all good places to get started.
Hey guys! Im pretty new to dnd, I’ve played once or twice but never had friends that were interested. Does anyone know how I would go about joining a game? Thanks

Barbarian only gets spells from Totem Warrior and Ancestral Guardian IIRC - as Rituals, and they end up just being speaking with animals or getting augury or arcane eye.
Fighter has the Eldritch Knight subclass which gets Wizard spells, and at the very top of their spellcasting capability they could get Life Transference.
Alternatively, you can look at a scarce few feats, such as Magic Initiate, choosing the Cleric spell list and Wisdom due to it being Cleric.
Just remember that a barbarian still can’t cast spells while raging.
Grab 3 levels of Warlock (The Celestial); Healing light lets you spend d6's equal to 1+Warlock Level to heal. It's not a spell, so it should work while raging. As a bonus, you can pick up a pact and some Invocations. You could pick up Pact of the Tome & Book of Ancient Secrets; Aside from getting rituals and being a sort of tribal shaman to get some RP flavor outside of combat, you can pick up things like the Spare the Dying cantrip.
The Healer perk is also incredible for additional healing.
Thanks
So i struggle to find a dnd group to join. And i was thinking about diving in to this world solo. If i have never tried dnd before, no experience. Should i buy The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox ? Would that book cover everything i need to start playing a campaign i can find ?. Do i need anything more ?.
You can find the free Basic Rules pinned in this channel. 5e isn't really designed for solo play, but there are attempts at home-brewing it into a solo experience on DM's Guild
do dnd beyond have homebrew option?
yes

Hello all newbies! If you need help with the basics such as character creation, rules and finding a discord server to join please let me know. I will be glad to help out
what's the best way to finding a discord server that would be good for someone newer?
This channel and discord can help with users of all experience levels. This channel in particular is meant to help newer folks with questions.
Can anyone tell good stories for level 1 to 8 characters for free???
Probably depends what you mean "for free"
Tell you the stories for free, sure
Tell you stories that only use SRD materials, also possible
Can you tell a story for level 1 to 8
Are you asking if it's possible to tell a story in D&D that spans a number of levels? Yes.
Or are you looking for a DM instead? In which case...

hi can anyone teach me how to play?
- Read the free basic rules (check the pinned messages)
- Watch videos/live streams of people playing D&D to get a feel for how the rules work in actual play
- Make a character or two - DnDBeyond is a great way to make a character and they even have a guided character creation process to help you out. This will help you see how the rules work with the character sheet.
- Find a group to play with and continues learning by playing - many groups are fine with new players as long as you show that you're willing to learn (by reading/learning on your own as well as asking questions when you're unsure) and willing to play well with others.
Hello new, I’m Dad
yo dnd espanol si si?
To start with, read the basic rules and make some characters, as DyingNoob said. As some next steps though, if you’re feeling like it’s something you really want to do and invest in, get a copy of the Player’s Handbook. It has all the basic rules, but then a bunch of character/class options, and personally I feel it explains the basic rule’s content better
D&D can be played in any language, but D&D Beyond and this server are in English only.
Hi can anyone help me and my 2 friends tomorrow, we just want someone to like be a DM for a few mins to show us how to play/how it should be? Once we have an example well be good to go 🙂 Thanks (we know some basics we just need a run through)
Ey there,
Quick question. If I am a mage or cleric or anything that can actually cast spells. And I am casting a spell while in reach of melee. Does the enemy have an attack of opportunity because I'm "preparing" to say and show a sign to make a spell work?
by default, attacks of opportunity are triggered when someone leaves your melee reach. There are two ways they could do what you're describing. If someone has the Mage Slayer feat, when someone within 5 feet of them casts a spell, they can use their Reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that target. Or, they could use the Ready action on their turn, "I want to Ready an attack against this spellcaster standing next to me if I see them start to cast a spell".
Thank you!
I will be available this afternoon from 2-5pm cst by PM if anyone has any questions about DnD

Welcome! There’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here to get your started, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
HI all. New to DnD. Awaiting my DM to have their first meet
o/ anyone know how to do homebrew healing spells? all i can make it do is damage
Other then dnd beyond what other apps do you reccomend a like brand new player getting?
If any of the new players are still having trouble finding servers to join and other questions to answer please PM me
look up greater healing potion to start off with? they give you a way to makr a homebrew off of existing items. you have to use greater or higher since those count as magic items. then alter the dice
Thank you 🙂 been trying out random spells and trying to figure it out
@signal fog this channel exists for people to ask and answer newcomer questions. There is no need to solicit people to PM you, especially repeatedly
Ok but im here to help
That's brilliant, but there's no need to solicit people to PM you. Helping people in this channel is overall more beneficial
I will be here for a couple of hours if anyone has questions
hello, I'm new to D&D. Out of curiosity, how do most players play D&D? I seen that a lot are played online, and would like to do the same one day.
If you buy a book on DNDBeyond is that just the digital book or do you get a copy of the hardback book?
Just the digital
thx
They did announce they're going to start testing physical + digital bundles with Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. More details here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1310-faq-one-d-d-rules-d-d-digital-and-physical-digital#bundles
cool, thx
i actually have no idea where to start looking in this server
Depends on what you are looking for
Have you checked #880965682462875679 to pick up any roles in that interest you?
i actually have not
one of my friends showed me one dnd so i checked it out without having any plan on what i wanna see XD
Hi there, new to DnD. Been hooked to this solo player Me, Myself & Die recently. How does one start DnD
We’ve got #one-dnd-discussion-archive if you want to chat about One D&D specifically.
Welcome! There’s a bunch of helpful starter links in the pinned messages here that can get you up to speed.
Otherwise if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
okay i slowly get the hang of it that every topic has a special chat
Can u play campains on DnD Beyond for free?
The basic rules are free, as are a couple of adventures. Each class has one free subclass. Other inclusions are some magic items for a DM to give their party, one feat (Grappler), a few races, and a selection of spells.
If someone in you group has a Master Tier subscription (paid), they can share any content they have with the rest of the group.
So said another way, if you have someone in your group with a Master Tier subscription, they can share content and you'll have access to that information "for free". ✌️
Heyoo does anyone play anime rpg?
This server is for discussing D&D. If you want to discuss other ttrpgs, please use #non-dnd-topics
hi
hi
i made a dragon thing
Cool
ok
Is there a way to play dnd by yourself? The campaign doesn't have to be long, in fact, I would prefer that it is relatively short. I've never played dnd before and I want to try it out by myself before trying to find a group. I don't have any of the rulebooks, but I can access the free rules pdf. Is there anything like this that I can play?
that sounds kinda cool
You can't play D&D proper by yourself
But you might be able to get a taste from one of the old Bioware games
The old Forgotten Realms crpgs are a decent introduction
oh
If designed around 3.5e more than 5e
OK. I'll look into it.
If you look up "Solo D&D", you might find some hits. Ginny Di recently did a video highlighting the "Solo Adventurer's Toolbox" and how it plays.
It's a bit closer to journalling tbh - but there's a lot of interesting opportunities to write a story for your character(s).
There are other solo RPGs, too. The Wretched and Alone system (free) is also about journalling - but obviously explores themes of loneliness. A very popular one of those is called Thousand Year Old Vampire.
Where can I get information to join a campaign as a player in the US
Hello I'm new and lost help.
same here pal
hey, you both should check out the links pinned to the channel
very helpful for beginners
What?
discord has pinned messages. if you look in the top right corner, there is a pin symbol. Or are you on mobile?
Mobile
there is also a symbol the top right there, with two human figures
if you go there, you see the pin
Oh, well I know how to play d&d I just don't know how to find a group
Either TBH
so for local play, people tend to either recruit friends/Family or they meet at dnd clubs as school/college or they go to local game stores
for online play, check out the channels on this server or you can try your luck on roll20.net or on /lfg on reddit.

@ornate kiln Thank you very much
sometimes people get together through facebook groups as well
If I could bother you with another question, what role would you recommend playing as a beginner?
Thank you so much! I’ll look into it.
Hey question, is it normal to Charge money for d&d campaign?like per session?
It's become somewhat normalized, yes.
No why T_T I just want to play d&d is that so much to ask
to be fair, DMing is a lot of work
but you can find plenty of potential games to be in in #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players
most games are still free but the paid game scnes has grown a lot for sure
I think its best to play what you are most interested in rather than go for simplicity but mostly, Barbarians, rogues and fighters are less complex than spellcasters
Thanks
I am somewhat in the same boat as you. I am a German national and live in France. The local scene is not very developed where I am, and if there are players, they are usually playing in French (which is fine by me, but somewhat a turn-off because of translation issues). So I have been looking into ways of getting into D&D on my own until such time I can find a group.
Here is the strategy I have worked out for that:
- Get the basic rules and read through them. A couple of times. To get familiar with the game mechanics and rules.
- Get the excellent resources "DM Yourself" and optionally "DM Yourselves" (Book 2) that contain strategies and tools to play published D&D adventures & campaigns on your own. The author teaches you how to read through the adventures and campaigns to minimize spoilers to an absolute minimum, so you can play both as a DM and the players.
- Get the starter adventure "Lost mine of Phandelver" either through purchasing the starter set or by reading it on dndbeyond.com (it's free).
- When playing as a PC, be honest with yourself and ask yourself ALWAYS, what does the PC really know and base your actions on that.
I am currently playing through this adventure and have loads of fun. I imagine that this approach is a bit more tedious and slower than playing in a group, but it works. The positive is, that you can take as much time as you want getting familiar with the rules and working out what you want to do.
The negative is of course, that the social interaction with a group is lacking.
Hope that helps.
Hello
Wow! Thank you for such a detailed response! I’m currently reading the free rules now, and I’ll look into the “DM yourself” books after I’m finished. I’ll also look into that “Lost mine of Phandelver” adventure. Thank you so much!

Hi everyone, newish 5e player. Enjoying it so much! Happy to be here!
Hi everyone. I just got into 5e a few months back, but played 3.5e back in high school/ university. D&D Beyond has really helped me pick up the new rules.
I'm a new ish d&d player been playing with friends over the years We've had like 2 campaigns but over time each and every one of my friends moved away and they ended up in a new group and now its just me
Hey, pretty new to DnD but I have been having a lot of fun playing when I can find a game, any suggestions on what types of games I should look out for? Like good campaigns you know of that I can get started in if I find a group?
Hi everybody! I’m very new to DnD but I’m excited to learn more. 😊👍
Hey all, I’m new to DnD, no one around where I live plays. I currently go to college where I major in software engineering
henlo
that is very much up to what you are interested in. Ravnica is vampires and undead. Spelljammer is space apparently. Ebberon I think is tech. Feywild is Alice in Wonnderland craziness. Everything else is traditional D&D fantasy I think.
thats hard. thankfully, there are places online to try and meet up. hope you find a game soon
I think you meant Ravenloft there. 😅
A vast, sprawling city that covers the whole of the known world, Ravnica teems with intrigue and adventure, driven by the conflicts among the ten powerful guilds that rule the city.
lol ? its 4am here. sorry if I messed that up.
Good morning everyone, I’ve been admiring DnD from afar for years and now I’m taking a step to be engaged with it. I’m very new to DnD and would very much appreciate learning more about the game.
Welcome! There's some helpful links in the pinned messages here to get you started, but we're happy to answer any specific questions you've got, too.
I am Toots!
Hello everyone. Has anyone played Dragons of Stormwreck Isle yet?
Not yet! I’m curious to take a look when it released on DDB.
I’m planning on getting Stormweck for my brother cuz he wants to start DMing
Heard it’s good for that
Hi i am new here
I never played the game before
And I actually don't know how to play it cuz there are so many rules

But it's look like a nice game

hi
Welcome, folks! 👋🏻
Hello
hi
just did the same, I need help
I really sympathize with what was said earlier. I'm new and have never played before. I've looked at that online guide and it's alot. Question, however. Are all games played in real time? Like, you have to join at this specific time? Or if turn based can different players take their turns at different times? I hope that question makes sense.
Some people play a style called "play by post" (PBP) which is much more asynchronous - e.g. emails back and forth about what the characters are doing and the DM sending out a summary and starting the next phase of play.
But generally it's done real time - either online or in a physical location
asynchronous. that's the word I was looking for and couldn't find. thank you.
It seems like the key is to find a game with players and a DM who are patient and don't mind coaching a newbie.
Most groups are fine with new players as long as the new player shows an effort to learn what they can on their own, is not disruptive, and the biggest factor of all, fits in with the social dynamics of the group.
That last one tends to be the biggest factor.
That and schedules.
Makes sense. I appreciate it.
Non-Homebrew is stuff from published books. (Stuff meaning races, classes, backgrounds, items, magic items, adventures, etc)
Homebrew is a term for user-made content, rather than official published content.
got it. cool. 🙂
hey just joined, sorry for coming out of nowhere but im making a sonic the hedgehog based D&D campaign on beyond and was wondering if anyone else has ever done this and if they wouldn't mind telling me how they organized badnik encounters (its my first time as a DM)
Hey so for the badniks did you make homemade monsters sheets for them or are you reusing certain official monster sheets and reflavoring them to the badniks?
I don't have experience running a sonic campaign but I do have knowledge around sonic games and know some dming
i wanted to do homemade chatacter sheets but im a bit over head, so i want to use actual monsters and just call em badniks
I'd say for starting dms using official sheets and reflavoring them would work well
Plus you can get some designs for them that can be based on surroundings and such
For the encounters
Normally badniks are glass cannon like so normal encounters could be a few w low hp but decent dmg
Then I'd say the two big encounters are boss ones (I'm guessing Eggman normally) and mini bosses (mecha sonic, metal sonic come to mind)
so far im using animated armor as egg pawns got any suggestions for motobugs and buzzbombers?
I'd say any monsters that are large insects fit well for those badniks due to both being insects
Buzzbombers are the flying ones correct?
ya the bees that shoot a little laser ball
I think the flame skull might be a good option
They are flying creatures w spellcasting but they have a challenge rating of 4 so question
What lvls are the pcs in the campaign currently?
This isn't really on topic for this channel. You might be best off taking this to PMs, or at least #dm-discussion
Ah ok
I'm new to this server so I'm adjusting so thank you 👍
thanks also the currently the players are lvl 3 and the badniks as of now are lvl 3-5
(waves) hi everyone, new player here.
ok
new
hi
hello
@solar kindle you might have the wrong server, this is a server for the D&D tabletop role-playing game, which doesn't require any installation
Hello all newish player here
I’m completely new! Hi guys! I would like to learn all the basics and how this DnD server works!
welcome!
Like you said, do I need to buy like a dice? Or like a DND starter pack?
Or is it online
you can play dnd online or at a table.
you don't need to buy anything if you don't want to. the basic rules are free and you can print out a character sheet or make a digital one on dnd beyond
you can buy dice but there are also apps and websites that allow you to roll dice for free
the basic rules are a bit limited of course. only one subclass (a kind of specialisation) per class, for further offical subclasses you would need to pay
So if we wanted to we could star a game now?
What’s the least amount of people you need for like a practice game?
Because I would like to. For practice
I guess 2
the typical group size (including a DM) is between 4 and 7 for most tables
but you totally can play with 1 DM and one Player
Ok I’ll text you when I have time because I’m going to eat lunch soon. I don’t want to have to leave halfway through
np, someone esle will be here answering questions if I am not
D&D Beyond has everything you need to get started, for free.

Hey so I’m ready to do that game
If you want
oh you thought i was offering to play a game with you right now?
oh yeah I can totally see that you said that. I misread that on my part. Damn I should read things more slowly.
so I thought you meant you gonna come back for more questions later.
sorry I dont have anything prepared.
Well I’m not prepared either I don’t know what I should do to prepare can we just call now? And you could tell me what I need?
sorry again, I didnt mean to offer to teach you personally how to play.
I can point you to places where people actually offer to run games, if you like
Oh, yeah, of course sorry
But yeah! When can I go to find games?

So, is there like a website I go to? To play, DnD or is it just a FaceTime call on discord?
people usually find each other over communities like the above mentioned and then play over stuff like discord or zoom etc.
dnd beyond is often used for digital character sheets
guys a question. for great-sword pally it's better to take defence fighting style or great weapon fighting?
great weapon fighting adds very little overall damage so I would take defense personally
hey guys im new here and am just trying to get back into playing. i bought a few books on dnd beyond and started a campaign and invited a few people but when they logged in they werent able to use my books even though i had content sharing on. can anyone please tell me what i need to do to allow them to use these books
Are their characters assigned to that campaign?
yes
i just started it for the first time and this was the first person to join so im still in the process of playing with it to see what i did wrong
Can you both visit this page and check if your account entitlements are in sync?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
And just to verify, do you or any of the other players in the campaign group have Master level subscription?
How do I add exp
Click on the anvil icon on the sheet to go to the section managing your character's levels/XP and set XP there.
To add spells to a character sheet, go to the front end of the sheet and click on the spells tab (next to Actions) and from there you can add spells to your character sheet.
If you needed help picking spells, I suggest checking in at #character-discussion where folks can provide advice and suggestions.
You might also need to go to your character settings and change the Advancement Type to XP. (It’s set to Milestone by default.)
Maybe a silly question but, im just joining a campaign on roll20 but really wanna use DDB character sheet i have the Beyond20 Browser Extension - To make my character sheet in DDB do i need to make a placeholder campaign with same sourcebook to build my character before i can link them all together or is there other ways ?
Beyond20 is not an official product. You might have to ask its creators instead.
Hello, is there like some kind of og beginners campaign I can join
guys could i get a bit of help? Making Vengance pally. Helf-Elf. Standard array. 16,10,14,8,12,16. Wanna focus on greatsword not polearms. Was thinking of taking +2 STR at 4th, Resilient[con] at 8, then GWM at 12, CHA+2 at 16 and finish with STR. is it fine? any advice on improving it?
maybe heavy armor instead of resilient[con]?
I would try #750812887697588356
Looking for players might be good too
Hi everyone! Me and a friend of mine recently got into DnD through stranger things(don’t judge us for it) we watched a few videos on how to play and make a character sheet, which was hella confusing. So if anyone is planning a campaign that noob friendly we would be more than glad to join.

Are you asking how often new games added in the above channels? All the time.
Or are you asking how long is it on average between sessions for a game? Because that depends entirely on the group.
#looking-for-players Hey y'all I'm new to dnd so I'm lookin for a beginner friendly group I can join
@vale moon that's not how that works. #looking-for-players is a channel, not a role you ping. You'll need to post in that channel using the template
oh i'm sorry
S'all good, no harm, no foul
Hello i whant yo learn how to play but i speak spanish and its a Little hard to understand. Can someone try and help me? I'll try my hardest to understand....
Do I print a blank character sheet and fill it out or print a finished pdf of the character? Can’t erase ink and there’s also some inconsistencies with the text size itself so I don’t really know what to do (because filling out a blank sheet takes a while)
If I make a blank I might as well just use my phone or a device no?
Hey, looking to join a game for the first time… lol never played before super noob.. but I’m a fast learner and I’m really into this whole realm. I play magic the gathering. I’m looking for someone that would be willing to “show me the way” Hahaha…
Is it me or there can be a chance a learn how to play
Anyone here?
I whant to practice my english by playing this game
heres what i did to get accustomed to the game. look in the #looking-for-players channel, and try to find a text only game. the players are nice enough to help you most of the time and if you forget how to do something you can always scroll up in the logs and look
i also think watching criticalrole is another tool to learn the game, might not be efficient, but they are very entertaining
Hey I appreciate that!
Where do I watch critical role? YouTube?
yes!
Haha! Thanks again!
ofc!
Ammm.... hello...?
Hey all new here and looking at getting into playing this regular, What would be the best way to start?
Hi
hello there Mari
I think if you want to play this ofthen look for a party
What if all of the noobs like me gather together and try ti learn ?
hey im VVColouRSS what would i neet to play D&D Its my first time playing D&D
Hi
hi
Hi VV! All you really need to get started is the basic rules and a person or two to play with. The basic rules are free on D&D Beyond and you can build character sheets and roll dice right on the site as well.
We have a bunch of links in the pinned posts of this channel to help newer folks get started
Folks here are usually quite happy to help with any questions you might have
thank ill have an look
if its ok with you we can learn together and try to play?
I'll join you if you want! I'm also a newbie
All fine by me
can i join too? im also new
Im ok with it
SOMEBODY HELP I JUST STARTED A SCHOOL DND CLUB AND I AM FIRST DUNGEON MASTER AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN DUNGEON MASTER AND I DODNT KNOW WHAT TO DO AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I dont know how to play but i can help you investigate
ty!
I'll going to send you a link
ok
start by getting a basic grasp of the rules - like how to ask for skill checks and how to manage combat
thank you guys both!
The rest of it is managing people and expectations while trying to help everyone have a fun time
ty
I do recommend running an official adventure for your first games (Lost Mines of Phandelver is a good one or even Wild Beyond the Witchlight).
Make sure everyone has the same/similar expectations on how you'll run the game, what topics are allowed/not allowed, how to handle player disagreements.
Also it's okay to make rulings on the fly - focus on fun and you'll be fine.
ok, i need that XD
i think day one for my school club should prob be setting up characters and basic expectations and rules right?
Yep! Session 0 is about setting expectations, schedules, and building character concepts.
Most important is setting expectations - most disagreements and player issues (beyond schedules) revolves around expectations not aligning.
And that how you make sure that you're arent walking on thin ice
facts XD
Also it's okay to pause the game to handle any issues that come up - as you get more experienced the need to do so will dwindle but sometimes you need to pause things and figure out where to go next.
Whats dwindle?
to get smaller
I think it's the first time i see that word
Also, watch some vids of people running D&D. Critical roll, of course, but there are a lot of streams.
Then throw out any assumption that your game will run exactly like theirs. Every game runs differnetly, and in general a streamed game will run more tightly and with more focus from players than any non-streamed tabletop. But watching a game be played before you try running it yourself will still help.
Yeah livestream games can be great to pick up ideas but they're mostly for entertainment purposes and not always the best at teaching good DM tips and tricks or the exact rules.
critical role 🙌
just look at how different any Dimension 20 game can go from one another, compared to Critical Role, whatever D4 is, and the nigh-endless other DND streams. Each table is as different as every facet of the people playing.
Yeah. It's great for getting a sense of the basic back and forth (compared to starting cold), but you don't want to assume that that's your target. If the players are happy and you're happy, you're probably doing fine.
The web series "Starter Kit: D&D" on the Geek & Sundry channel might be worth looking at, since it's specifically about teaching a group of newbies the basics of playing the game.
I'm looking for noobs that are wiling to learn and talk (i prefer voice because chating Is hard for me)
I don't know what to do I've created a character but how do I play
hello im looking for a group to play with

yes thanks
Can you get more than two wild shape uses as Druid?
Yes - at certain level's a druid's wildshape gets more powerful including how many times they can wildshape.
Yes, you can use it an unlimited number of times once you reach druid level 20
See the Druid's table that lists what they get and at what level: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid
Wait so you go from 2 uses from lv 1-19 to unlimited in lvl 20?
yep
There's no in-between like barbarian's rage?
correct
That's... some odd design.
(it's also why moon druid is hilariously op the moment they teeter from 19 to 20 - bonus action continually replenishing to max HP of their CR 6 wildshape)
(except for power word kill instantly killing them outright lol)
Does their wildshape hp not count towards the resistance?
The wording of power word kill is pretty clear "If the creature you choose has 100 hit points or fewer, it dies."
Doesn't wildshape count as a second health bar tho
Would that kill you outright or just the wild shape?
"it dies" is the important part here
Normally yes, wildshape creature's HP is like a kind of temp HP for the character. But power word kill is pretty clear that if the creature has less than 100 HP, it dies.
Anyhow this is turning more into a #dnd-rules question at this point so I'll stop here.
You have that much HP. PWK kills you.
PWK isn't damage, it's death.
i just made the COOLEST looking half-demon. (my opinion obvi)
this is for the ddo right?
No, this is DNDBeyond - basically like the books and character sheet of the tabletop DND Fifth Edition, but on a website and mobile app.
DND is a tabletop game
(not DDO - that's just an MMO like world of warcraft is an MMO using warcraft, DDO is an MMO using dungeons and dragons, with the Eberron setting)
Usually, one person runs the game, the Dungeon Master. Then, Players form a party of their characters. Usually 3 to 6 works for many tables.
In recent times, online play of DND has seen an increase in popularity as well.
But basically
Looking for Players is where a Dungeon Master posts to attract players. They post their listing for their proposed game, and people see that and direct message them.
Looking for DM is the inverse - a Player posts info about themselves, DND player-wise, and a DM might see that and invite them to their game.
ok thank u
Hello! I am helping my physically disabled student start playing DnD. I am an experienced player, but he is brand new. What accessibility options are available through dndbeyond to help him play as independently as possible? He cannot see text and has limited motor skills.
He should be able to navigate the site using a screen reader. I know the team's worked very hard over the past year to improve the experience there.
If you find any areas where he has specific trouble, though, please let us know in #ddb-feedback. We'll make sure it gets passed along for review.
is anyone new here looking for a campaign to join? Im hosting one but only one player so far
check out #750812887697588356 for folks looking for a DM.. and if you want to make a post of your own, please use the template in #looking-for-players to tell folks about your campaign! ❤️
oh shoot sorry
no worries at all!
Will do, thank you!
If I attempt to gain the favor of a crowd by playing an instrument, (Performance Roll), and the instrument I am using I am proficient with, do I get to add my Proficiency bonus on top of my roll+my performance modifier?
No
The general rule is you only add a proficiency bonus once to a roll. There may be cases where you're adding the full bonus, half the bonus(such as a Bard with the Jack Of All Trades feature), or double your bonus(such as with the Expertise feature). The rules about things like this and tool proficiencies have never been terribly clear.
Your proficiency bonus can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once. Occasionally, your proficiency bonus might be modified (doubled or halved, for example) before you apply it. If a circumstance suggests that your proficiency bonus applies more than once to the same roll or that it should be multiplied more than once, you nevertheless add it only once, multiply it only once, and halve it only once.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
There’s an optional rule in XGTE where having proficiency in certain skill and tool combinations can instead give you advantage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/dungeon-masters-tools#MusicalInstruments
Wow
that is not all clear, i read that earlier but wasn't sure what to take away from it so i came here to ask about that, among other things.
And that tool + skill proficiency advantage is applied more broadly in One D&D to encompass any combination.
But with just the default rules, one of those goes to waste.
Those kind of checks are one of the things I'm hoping the One D&D playtests can give some clarity to.
In short, that’s all your persuasion check is: a Charisma check where you add your proficiency bonus (if you’re proficient in persuasion).
So since you’re already adding your proficiency bonus, you can’t add it again from your tool proficiency.
I see. Tysm
😲
trying to learn the very very basics of dnd and reading through basic rules on dnd beyond would a level 3 character have a +6 to their proficiency bonus? or would it only be a +2 until level 5 where it becomes +3
it's just what you have at that level
otherwise, by the time you hit 5th level, you'd have +11 proficiency lol
Hey I think I'm looking to join a group is it a weekly or daily thing
Depends on the group, although I doubt many would be daily
This table shows the proficiency bonus for each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
Basically it goes up every four levels instead.
Hello, New to all this D&D. Would like to start playing at an entry level?
Ello.
hi
Hello! I’m new to DnD but would love to learn everything I can about it. My husband plays and DM’s so he is currently teaching me too!
Most DMs are happy to have new players in their games, so just look for games that are open to beginners. If it doesn't specify, reach out to the DM and ask! You can find games to play in #looking-for-players on here, or on the ddb forums, or your local gaming/comic/hobby stores or libraries or other community locations
If a guide says for Halfling: Customized Origin: +2/+1, is there a way to do this on DND Beyond and place the +2 +1 where I'd prefer? Or does it lock all Halflings into the sub race stats
You need to enable origin customisation on the first page of the builder
Ok did that, and then say I want everything the Stout Halfling has and be able to change the stats, do I choose stout halfling and then somehow change the stats?
Select your race first, then click where it says “Origin Manager”. Find and enable Origin Ability Score Increase (there may be more than one), then switch back to Racial Traits to choose your stats.
Thank you so much did not even see that little drop down
guys how do i become a dungeon master through dnd beyond and how does being a DM work
Whoever creates your group’s campaign is considered the Dungeon Master. Once your players join (you can send them the invite link at the top of your campaign page), you’ll be able to view and edit their characters as well.
Lost Mine of Phandelver (which you can read for free) has a good intro on how to DM.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop/introduction#TheDungeonMaster
Think of the DM as a the stage manager who sets the scene and asks the players what their characters are going to do on that scene. The DM decides what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed and what enemies or problems are to be faced.
Hello! My name is sunshine they/them and I am hoping to find a group to play with. I GM an Esper Genesis campaign and a Curse of Straud Campaign and want to play more. If anyone is looking for a virtual player please hit me up. I am hoping to find a group before making a character but it's so fun making characters. 🥹
Okay random question... "I know dragons can take the form of a human, but would they also be able to take the form of a Dwarf?"
The shapeshift ability on dragons doesn't say they can turn into humans, but humanoids, which includes dwarves
They can also transform into beasts
"The dragon magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than its own, or back into its true form."
And to the best of my knowledge, it's only Ancient and Adult Metallic Dragons that have this abilityh
Also we have #dnd-rules for such questions
hi, I am a new player, and I would like to play dnd
I have a character and all
I don't how, where to play
hello??
please don't leave a rude message like "hello??" when people take more than a few minutes to respond to you. There isn't someone monitoring this channel 24/7.
As for where to play, there is lots of answers to this question. You could get a group of friends together to play IRL, or go to a local gamestore to see if they run any public games, or you could play online. There are several forums you could use to find public online games, like discord, or reddit. This server has a few LFG channels.

I'll see what I can do
I'll say one last thing, just based on something you posted in #one-dnd-discussion-archive. Its important to keep in mind, D&D is not a video game. It doesn't have automatic match making, or anything like that. There is no "play now" button. If you want to play D&D, you have to find a group of people to play it with, and schedule a time to play together. You probably aren't going to be able to play today.
hello:)
Hello everyone. Just got here and what not.
Welcome!
Hey what’s up am all ready to go!
If you're looking for a game to join, please check the #looking-for channels. Remember that it takes time to put together a group of people to play a game and don't expect to find something right away.

hey, I have never played dnd before and only know what the general person who has never played knows. I was wondering if you guys could help me find out how to find/get into a campigh to learn how to play? Thank you
Welcome! If you look right above, there’s a list of channels where you can find a game.
As for learning how to play, there’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here to get you started.
Or if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
oh me too
hey guys and girls im super new never played before but always been fascinated by dnd this seems to be a very confusing game to learn the rules !!!!!
Welcome! If you’ve got any questions, ask away!
hahaha just looking for a uk group to show me the ropes that dont mind someone absolutely clueless
33 and only just starting dnd
Hello everyone. Joined to follow One D&D news and updates. 🥂
Thanks
Check the pinned messages for links to useful resources to help get you started. I do recommend at least looking through the free basic rules, then maybe watch a few videos of people playing the game (understanding that many of these are entertainment first, rules training last), then maybe try making a character or two on DnDBeyond (refer back to the basic rules to help you see how the rules line up with the character sheet). Then finally, find a group to play with. Most groups are fine taking on a new player as long as the new player shows a desire to learn, does a lot of learning on their own (e.g. reads the rules), and most importantly fits in well with the group.
hey i was wondering if any one has tipps info for me im very new escaply too dnd
and i need too make a charakter for a campgain but i never made one alone so ?
any tipps or tools or webistes y can recomend
I recommend reading the free basic rules and then use DnDBeyond to create a character to see how the rules interact with the character sheet. DnDBeyond even has a helpful guided character build option which helps explain things as you build it.
im not sure wich but dont a lot of these websites have restrctions on race class sub class y can pick if your free?
i just winged it and got a wizard ranger that is very smart
Yes - unless you buy the books to access it or are in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled that has access to those books, you are restricted to the classes and races available in the free basic rules.
it's no different to using the basic rules in person before you have the sourcebooks
DND beyond. Do they have certain sales? Had some people in a group previously with all the books. And it’s just…tons of money.
There are periodic sales, yes.
Hello everyone Im new to DnD
me too. Looking for group if anyone is starting new campaign
Hello and welcome! we have some resources for newer folks in the pinned messages of this channel and if you are looking for a group take a peek in #looking-for-players where DMs advertise about their games and #750812887697588356 where you tell DMs about yourself
Hello :) I just joined this.
Hi! New to all of this! I would like to make a Paladin Oathbreaker in the character builder, but I am unable to see this choice. I am reading that you need the Dungeon Master's Guide to enable this? So if I purchase the DMG through the website the character creator tool will then have this option in the selector?
Sorry for the repeat - I just would like to confirm. I have a physical copy of this book (found it at a used book shop!) but in order to get this Oathbreaker enabled I need to purchase the book through the site?
Thanks!
you can buy the whole dmg or just the individual subclass through ddb
but yeah, you need to buy one or the other regardless of you owning the physical book
also, just fyi, the oathbreaker is a subclass you might want to talk to your DM about before you take it, as it was originally meant for evil NPCs
thank you so much for the confirmation - I get it now 🙂 and thanks for the advice - I will check with the DM.
In the app it seems I can “prepare” any number of spells. Is there supposed to be a cap based on my level and/or stats? I’m configuring a Paladin.
I have played D&D over the years but not recent enough to really know what i'm doing by myself. I have managed to collect several books and am now looking to start playing with an online group. My question is, do I have to repurchase all of the books I have collected over the years digitally just to play? For example the Artificer from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything isn't available in the character creator?
Yes, you will have to rebuy content on D&D Beyond.
Wow, just wow!
If you had to purchase a book to access it physical, the same applies to access it digitally
so the hundreds of dollars i've spent are now worthless in todays d&d environment?
These queries would however be more suitable to #dnd-discussion or #ddb-support
No?
You can use the homebrew tools to enter content in for personal use, or use your books for online play as I used to do myself
Your DM or another player from any campaign you join will be able to share their content with you. No need to repurchase everything
I can't even create the character without access to the book
The character sheet at the very least should contain the ability to create every class and let me use my book to fill in the book specific information
Do you have a campaign lined up?
Not yet but I wanted to play around with character creation and familiarize myself with everything again so I don't jump into something completely ignorant.
The character creator can make use of the options in the Basic Rules, plus any sourcebooks you have access to on the website
You can use everything that’s available for free in the Basic Rules. You can also just buy the bits and prices you need for a particular character. Or you can be in a DDB campaign that has content sharing enabled and everybody’s stuff is shared with everyone else in that campaign.
Or you can use the homebrew tools to create what you need.
That's the problem, I own several books physically and don't want to spend $30 a book again.
Then use the homebrew tools to create what you need for free.
Homebrew doesn't have character creation in it as far as I can see
Just takes work and time.
If you want to input all the data yourself you can just make your artificer “homebrew “
You can create the classes, spells, and items, etc and use those in the character creation tool
You can't create a full homebrew class, only subclasses I believe
Yeah good clarification- only subclasses
ok, I see subclass
Is there a good video anyone knows of that explains how D&D Beyond, Homebrew and online campaigns work? I guess part of the problem is I have no idea where to even begin so I started with character creation.
I wouldn't have such a problem with re-buying content if they didn't try to charge the same as I paid for the physical content. And then on top of that they want a subscription. $9.99 for a digital book would be more than fair or just let me pay $9.99/mo and give me access to all the content as long as my sub is active.
You don't need a paid subscription to play. But having one gets you benefits like having more characters created. The website will show you the specifics of what the different subscription levels give you.
BTW thx for the help @rotund onyx , @echo kelp and @untold flint
Again, this channel is not for discussing or debating the merits of the D&D Beyond pricing model
Or you could be helpful. All i've seen you do in every channel is criticize people for not knowing exactly where they should ask a question in a server with over 30 channels. Not everyone thinks in the same logical order as you. It may have started as a question about the pricing but turned into relevant newcomer questions.
I directed you to the appropriate channels for your queries
If you need help homebrewing stuff into D&D Beyond, I also recommend you check out #homebrew
Hi everyone! I joined to find a group and learn how to play. I was hoping to partake in the OneD&D playtesting.

Hello i am verry new to d&d and i have some questions about characters
If i have a character and i want it to be a npc in the campaing that i died in can it be possible?
Dose having a long description benefit in any way?
Usually the DM establishes and runs NPC (non-player character) and often they don’t need a stat block unless they’re meant to engage the party at such a level that a stat block is needed.
So I would say ask your DM.
That's more of a #dm-discussion question
alright thanks
hi also brand new just wanted to know if i want to ask questions about the game which group/tag/channel (not sure on the right terminology) should i use
i want to ask a question about the availability of muskets/guns in dnd and wether the artificer Arcane armor counts as one of the daily infused items or do those remain free to use as i please after a long rest and the armour counts as its own thing apart from that?
Firearms are up to DM discretion
As for the rules on artificer, best to refer to the rules. But arcane armor is a class feature and does not take up one of your daily infusions.
As for channels, those kinds of questions are #dnd-rules territory.
thank you
Hi I'm brand new I've just started today I need help getting into this I know the basics like the very Basics that's about it I've watched other people play the only other game I've played that's similar is Magic the Gathering I'm just looking for like help and stuff yeah um I don't really know what to say
What help do you need specifically?
I don't really know for sure I'm sorry like I'm kind of confused like I understand a lot of things but at the same time I don't I don't really know how to describe it I'm sorry if that makes things harder but I guess like I'm hoping to get into a game I've made one character although he might not be very good because like I said I'm like totally brand new like just started today but I've been watching it and kind of get it but at the same time not because like it's similar to Magic but at the same time completely different
It's not similar to MTG. MTG is a card game between two people, whereas DND is more about a party of characters going through their fantasy quest, facing monsters, trials and tribulations, such as dragons, puzzles and traps, and tense social situations.
You understand the rules well enough? Attacks ability checks and saves, score versus modifier, weapons, how spellcasting works?
I know the basic rules that's about it like I've created a character with the stats and stuff but no I don't really know how most of that works
The game can sort of be boiled down to
1: DM describes a scene, what your character senses.
(Like you're in a dungeon, this room tilts around on a consistent cycle, there's some coloured orbs, and some blocks and circles that react as the orbs roll around the floor)
2: Then you describe what your character does.
(like maybe grabbing one orb and holding it next to a part of the mechanism)
3: Then the DM describes what happens.
I described some of the things most basic to playing the game, being the three main types of rolls, and the two ways you'd be dealing damage - weapons or spells.
Yeah that makes sense I do understand that I just didn't know what you were saying exactly sorry I didn't process that correctly but yes I've seen that I know how to do that I just don't know how like the damn chain system works like I kind of do but at the same time I don't and I don't know any of the names of weapons or spells because I do not have a book
there's no chain system.
Sorry that was autocorrect
ah, then what system was it?
I meant to say damaging system
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules free to read
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack specifically how attacking works
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageandHealing (Keep reading down, the stuff is relevant all the way until it begins talking about mounted combat)
Okay thanks
Still really new to the server looking to join a campaign I don't really know how this works

What kind of roll would your mental resilience be?
Will - Wisdom
That depends on what you're defending yourself against.
Could be Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma.
Wisdom saving throws tend to be about willpower. Resisting fear, confusion, domination, etc. Intelligence saves tend to be about attacks on the rational mind. Recognizing illusory effects like Phantasmal Force, telling friend from foe like Enemies Abound. Charisma saves are kind of weird. They're sort of about attacks on your sense of self. Possession, banishment from your current plance of existence, and some other things. Of the three, Wisdom saving throws tend to show up most often.
Thank you so much, this helps a lot
Hello everyone! Just joined the group. Hope y'all doing okay!

Can someone tell me how to join a campaign. I have no clue.
The million dollar question these days!
Check out the #looking-for-payers below under the D&D GAMES
Online
Any more details? What next?
I'm new to this DC but looking around it appears the DM's looking for players post their requirements and you reach out to them for a chance to apply to their games. If you fit their requirements (i.e. 1 shows under 20 while another shows over 18) then send the individual a DM to investigate further.
D&D campaigns are not "official" things. They are a group of people agreeing to play a game together. You join a campaign by finding someone who is starting a campaign, and asking them if you can join. Its really that simple
the only trick then, is "finding someone who is starting a campaign"
There is plenty of ways to go about this. You can get a group of irl friends together, you can see if your local game store has any public games going, or you can find a group online. Typically, public online games will post on forums like reddit or discord. That what this server's LFG channels are for. If you find one that interests you, send them a DM and ask to join, or ask for more information if you aren't sure
its just a conversation between two people about playing a game together. There is no official procedure to follow
Standard rules for any social interaction apply
so there's no game lobby or whatever on the website
The website is the official digital toolset and game companion for d&d.
There is no automated match making etc available
To quote ScarTheColossus,
"Its important to keep in mind, D&D is not a video game. It doesn't have automatic match making, or anything like that. There is no "play now" button. If you want to play D&D, you have to find a group of people to play it with, and schedule a time to play together. You probably aren't going to be able to play today."
There are video games that are based on or inspired by D&D - feel free to look into that if it interests you. But yeah, D&D the tabletop RPG game is based on getting real people's schedules coordinated enough to get together in person or virtually to play the game. You may have more of an "instant play" experience by looking up D&D game servers - check the #looking-for-community channel for those. I will throw out the caveat that online play on a server with a bunch of strangers will be very different than getting together with already-known friends.
So I'm in a game and my dm has a strict three warning policy against meta gaming. I'm new to the game and have no clue what kind of things constitute as meta gaming, so I've already amassed two warnings, and if I meta game again, whether on purpose or by accident, I'm kicked out of the group. Is this normal for dms, because if it is, I'm worried I'm going to be too caught up on what's meta gaming to actually have fun playing the game.
Or is this just a sign that dnd isnt for me
man, that's hard. every DM is different and run their tables differently. has your DM explained thoroughly what they consider meta gaming to be? if not, maybe pull them aside and ask. could be good to communicate your thoughts to them and see if you guys can get on the same page. i really hope it doesn't put you off. i think just having clear expectations and communication is key. this DM/table may not be the right fit for you but i'm sure there's one out there. 🙂
on a personal note, i'm a DM and sometimes my players will meta game but i don't have any sort of 3 strikes and you're out thing.
if i find someone may be doing it too much, on purpose, then i would just talk with them.
Last time I asked if I could get a list, they gave me a few examples of what I did during the session and told me that i need to understand why the dm has their rules and not question them
wow!!!! hmmmm???
Truthfully sounds like the dm is just a bad fit for you. Especially as a new player. Don't let this leave a bad taste in your mouth. Some dms are like that, some honestly don't care. It's a fantasy game and we all have access to all the published works some some meta gaming happens regardless. Even if it's unintentional.
that doesn't sound good. if the DM is on some power trip i'd maybe find a new table. just my thoughts. again, not every table/DM is going to be a good fit. if they seem to be a rules lawyer and don't want to be questioned, i consider that a red flag. yes, the DM is the final say so in the game play but that doesn't mean there can't be a conversation and flexibility.
There's a few other things that struck me as weird, but I was having fun so I let it slide. Probably gonna look for a different group now. Thanks.
you bet!!! and like @gilded roost said, don't let this be a bad taste in your mouth. 🙂
No D&D is better than bad D&D and not all DMs and groups will be the right fit for you.
yeah that DM sounds a bit... ehhhhh.
The very least they could do is... Explain what you can do to avoid it. But it does just sound like they're using "you're metagaming" as an excuse for something.
Hey I'm as new as they come. What should I be writing for "game style" if I want to play a basic fantasy d&d campaign? Anything similar to critical role campaign 2 for example.

The best way to learn how to play DnD is to create a character and test out your character in a one shot
A one shot dungeon would be good to start out with
Also a beginners campaign like Lost Mine of Phandelver would be great to play for first time players

Hi there. I'm new to D&D, I've always wanted to play it but never really dived into it. I've just brought Icespire Peak. I want to become a DM, however I can't understand the combat system or the character sheet properly. Any idea how I can better understand these two things? 🙂
Please @ me if you know any ways I can better understand the Character Sheet and Combat System in a simpler format/explanation. Cheers.
have you read the basic rules, specifically the sections on character creation and combat?
Hello, I am new and interested in learning about DnD. I am not sure how it all works yet. I was wondering if I could listen in on a group to get by bearing on how it all works. My background knowledge of DnD is based on video games and movies. I did buy the starter box and try to join a group near me, but found it was hard to jump into a established group of ppl that knew far everything.
I recommend reading the free basic rules, watch some videos of people playing D&D (note that these are more oriented towards entertainment than teaching the rules but they can help you see how the rules are used or modified in actual play), then try creating a character using the free basic rules, and then find a group to play with.
Check the pinned messages here for some great resources to help get you started.
will do thank you
Unfortunately I haven't gotten round to it yet. Would this be inside the rulebook that came with the Icespire Essentials Kit?
A nice D&D Player private messaged me with a full explanation as well which I'm thankful for and will read in the late afternoon.
Check the pinned message on this channel - it links to the free basic rules.

Hi guys, I have a question regarding the spell ''Bane''.
''Up to three creatures of your choice that you can see within range must make Charisma saving throws. Whenever a target that fails this saving throw ....(etc.)''
How do i know the DC for the Charisma saving throw the target is supposed to make to avoid the spell? Am i supposed to cast the spell with a 1d20 + Charisma modifier and then the targets must have a higher result than that?
No. The spell is cast and the targets must make the save - The DC is based off the spell casters spell save DC. To succeed, the target must roll equal to or higher than that spell save DC.
Thanks for answering. I am not sure what a spell save DC is and where to find the spell save DC of Bane
So the caster’s stats should list the spell attack modifier and spell save DC.
You want to use the spell save DC in this case.
esssentially the spell dc is based on 8 + proficiency hen the bonus you get from the stat you use as a caster
for example warlocks use chrisma bonus so you add the bonus from chaisma n top of that
so for example lets say you are sorcerer or a warlock with an 18 in charisma that gives you a + 4 in bonus initially then the base 8 then proficiancy that starts at +2 gives youre spells a save dc of 14 monsters have to bet on s spell like Bane
dc14 charisma save in this case if it is cas at level one with this example
You’ll find that formula (and others) in your class’s Spellcasting description.
Or more generally, here in the Spellcasting chapter.
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers.

That would be a #dnd-rules question
Do you guys have a group I can join

not sure if this goes here, but me and my friends have a dnd club at school. The forever DM wants to be a pc for that year as it will be all of ours last year playing.
I offered to take the dm spot, but spoiler, im not confident in my dm skills.
So we decided that me, her, and two others will have a one shot, with me as the DM
I wanted to go with something halloween, however i had no ideas. Anyone want to help?
The folks in #dm-discussion can help with that.
could someone whos played the lost mines of phlandelver tell me what the best level is to start it please?
- We have #adventures-spoilers-archive for discussing published adventures
- The adventure states the starting level
oh sorry, ok thanks
I'm sure people do, time zones are pretty big
Where is that time zone located
India
Ok what is the time difference from India and the USA
This isn't related to D&D, let alone helping newcomers, and isn't anything that can't be answered using Google
If someone wants to play DnD you should help them out right
Like I said, if you want to know what the time difference is between two time zones, please use Google, not this channel
Hey everyone I'm new to nearly all that is D&D
Welcome!
If you're looking for getting started info, check out the pinned links in this channel
Awesome, I've always been interested in D&D ever since I watched the films and played boulders gate dark alliance, I know they only lightly touch on things D&D but got me interested
Feel free to ask any questions you might have after looking at those links. 😄
Will do
if i have an issue or problem like a bug or glitch where could i ask for help?
#ddb-support would be the best place
Hi everyone! I am a total newbie in D&D, haven't played a single game yet. I played some LARP and listened to a Pathfinder actual play podcast. Hoping to learn more and play my first game soon
Check out the pinned messages for useful links to help get you started.
Thank you! I actually am watching the YouTube vid from the first message rn
hey so i just started playing D&D and am wondering if it was a good idea to go with Asmodeus Tiefling and Soulknife (revisited) Rogue, or if that is gonna be to complex
Hard to say. “Too complex” is entirely relative. 😅
Just play whatever excites you! You’ll figure out the rest.
And if you have any specific questions about how part of it works, #dnd-rules will help you out. 👍🏻
I need a third opinion fellow D&D players, what is the superior race for melee combat?: Dragonborn or Half-Orc
Please @ me if you have an answer
about to start dming for the first time and play dnd for the first time, anything i should know?
Focus on fun, make sure before playing that you discuss and establish boundaries and expectations (how to handle player disagreements, etc), you don’t have to know everything but be prepared to make a ruling on the fly, protect the game and be prepared to stop the game and handle things. Also go grab the right role to check in with #dm-discussion.
In terms of abilities that augment a melee character? Half orc. But it's not necessarily "superior", it just synergizes in a more direct way
Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
Remember to Yes And. The magic of this game is when people do wildly unexpected things, so honour those actions. Try to avoid shutting things down, and always build on top of what the players are doing. If they want to try something silly they should absolutely be allowed to, but they might suffer quite badly as a consequence. Or if they want to do something funny, see if you can make it even funnier. Basically just hype up your players, in a way that keeps them aware their actions have real consequences
And remember, you do have the power to say no. If you undershoot, you can almost always add more fuel. If you overshoot, it's much more difficult to pull punches without outright changing dice roll results (fudging dice, making the monster's attacks miss for example)
hi im new here and i came looking for a DM to host a campain with me and my friend (2 players) we can play past 4pm british time every day and all day on weekends, can anyone explain to me how to find a dm and can we do this all online as well please

Hello:)
I'm very new to d&d but i really want to learn and eventually play. I am interested in how you start. I don't have a team or anything but i would love to join and play.
Hello. Do you want to be a player with a character, or do you want to be the Dungeon Master (the story teller)? There is a channel on this server called "#looking-for-players" if you want to start as a player with a character. I would recommend starting with a character if you've never played before.
Hi! Yes i do want to be a player with a character. And thank you
@whole sable Advertising and self promotion is only permitted in #dnd-advertisements
Oops. Sorry about that.
#looking-for-community
So, of all the main dnd content books out there, (other than the dm/player handbooks) which ones should I prioritize buying?
After the main 3 (PHB, MM, DMG), I recommend Xanathar's and Tashas.
If you’re looking specifically for player options, yeah, those two have the biggest selection.
Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron offer the most in terms of class options, and Monsters Of The Multiverse gives you the biggest selection of new race options.
There are some classes that i would love to play in a non combat heavy game
Hey there

hi guys
im literally complete noob when it comes to tabletop rpg. i was wondering if thered be people here who can teach me a thing or two cause i dont have many friends who are intrested in learning with me 😅
I mean if you have questions we're always happy to answer them. But you learn this game best by actually playing it. I would recommend you either find a group online, or see if you can hunt down your local adventurers league
how would you suggest finding a group whod be willing to play with a newbie
Online? No idea I don't do digital dnd. But the whole point of adventurers leagues is you can just show up and be a player with no judgements or expectations
So just like, go to one of those a few times and you'll get invited into a campaign. People are always looking for new players
i seee
i dont think there are a lot of people intrested in dnd where i live so finding people irl might be a bit difficult, but ill be sure to look into it
You'd be surprised
This game has sort of quietly grown into a global phenomenon over the last half century
@serene trout Hi, i'm a noob as well. I played D&D one time when I was 18 I think. That's been a LONG time ago. I don't know anyone in my area that plays, and I am very interested in online. Can I add you as a friend so if I or you find something useful, we can message, and hopefully get rolling in all of this?
yeah sureeee man. i would love to
Sweet, hopefully we can get into a good group and start learning.
Aww look at you two making friends. Gosh I love this community 🥰
I think the main thing is finding an experienced DM who can help keep everyone on the right track. I could probably run a basic game of the board game version I have so long as everyone stuck to the board game's default chars but like the last time I let people make their own stuff with that game they died to a kobald I think. XD Also that thing is super out of date. Still was quite the steal at like 1.99 to 3.99 I think and had all the parts XD I guess I got it before there was a boom in interest otherwise I'm sure the charity shop would have listed it higher.
I mostly have to learn in case the friends and fam I have really want to give it a proper shot after mentioning it to me
Did you check the channel on this Discord called #looking-for-players ? You should be able to get into an online game that way. Lots of D&D Discord servers have that channel to help find online games.
Welcome, folks!
Hello! I’m new at dming dnd and I just joined is there any dm’s that can help me out?
They all hang out in #dm-discussion. To find it, though, you’ll need to swing by #880965682462875679 first and mark yourself as a DM.
Thank you
Local game groups are usually found at the local game stores. That is where I found some decent groups willing to incorporate and teach a new player. Finding one to accommodate a new group of players is tougher.
hi im new and i would like to know how to join peoples campain
go to the topic #looking-for-players and see if one fits what you are looking for and then reach out to the DM/GM
thanks
