When in doubt, rule in favor of your players
All of that is great advice! Also: stay hydrated
There's some good advice here, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
Yeah but that book also out of print and is damn near impossible to fine for under $150 USD. That’s why I didn’t even mention it. And people want as much money for the Rise of Tiamat book. But luckily I found a game store in Australia that said they had Tyranny of Dragons in stock for MSRP so I ordered it.
You could also get it for $20 USD right here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures/rise-of-tiamat
Does D&D beyond have a custom class option? I'm planning on making a tough commoner as a character to play as
nope
Thanks
In the #looking-for-players channel, do we message the DM in private or write in the channel if we want to "apply"?
You use discords private message system to contact them. The channels are only for formatted looking for x posts.
Okay. Thank you very much! 😀
You are welcome ;)
True but I don’t care for digital books. I like having the physical thing.
Not really a newcomer discussion, probably better suited to #dnd-discussion
im a new dm any advice?
☝🏻 There were some new-DM tips shared earlier today.
Have fun and don't try to get every rule 100% right all the time 🙂
Hello all, am a new player who wants to learn how to play and build a god of war 4-like character. Any advice or direction for me?
Like brand brand new?
Yes, never played. Just listened to podcast and watched videos of others playing
Goliath barbarian is the closest thing to what you described
Goliath Rogue/Barb to get expertise in Athletics until such time that the new grappling rules apply
Or take the Skill Expert if you don't want to lose a Barb level, their capstone is pretty nifty, after all 🙂
Hey can you just roll a dice without a dm for your character abilities or do you have to be there when you roll said dice?
Depends on the DM.
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d suggest starting with Standard Array or Point Buy to be safe.
Always best to ask the DM. A lot of DMs like to be there to witness the rolls and ensure their players aren't cheating.
Usually unless the group are all friends and trust each other, the rolls are done where people can see them.
Hey I'm pretty brand new i'm in the middle of one campaign. but its jojos inspired and pretty infrequent so i think of myself as brand new. just looking to get started. its something ive always wanted to try and something I like thinking of characters for, just never made that step forward. good to meet you all
how does inspiration work? and how do you use it in a situation for actions or something?
Inspiration is typically awarded by the DM, for whatever they want to award it for.
Maybe the player just pulled some epic feat, or made the whole table laugh.
That player can then spend it to get advantage on one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw.
oh ok
Hi guys, I’ve just got started playing it and would like to know how to find a dm and get my first character created

Hi there! Many eons ago I played a bit of D&D and recently I’ve been bitten by the owlbears again. I’m in a rather serious D&D kick right now, learning 5e and trying to find the time to re-learn how to play and to dabble in DMing. I thoroughly enjoy the system and am happy as a newbie, but it’s hard to find a space/time slot to quench the thirst. I’m in Spain, so the time difference is also a factor. However, if an opportunity arises for a relative newcomer to help out, I’m more than willing!
Also, I recently discovered the DnD app and I’m loving it. Still learning to use it, though!
can someone here help me with the character maker in the website?
What kind of help were you looking for?
like what do i do cus I have no idea how to make my character
Do you have any idea of what you’d like to play?
no like I know what I want I just dont know how to do it
Where exactly are you stuck?
race
Did you have a race in mind already, then? Or were you looking for advice on choosing a race?
I thought about an elf but its kind of obvious so I want something else that goes well with a bard
If you use the Customize Your Origin rules, it makes things flexible enough that pretty much any race can work as a bard.
You can just reassign the ability score increase however you see fit.
So honestly: just pick whatever excites you.
I meant like what race can help me get more charisma
so the races are just for looks?
No, they give you a lot of other cool abilities.
Just don't let the ability score be your defining factor here.
like what?
They have some traits. Halflings are kind of personable and lucky, they could make good bards, but race is not really the most crucial thing for a bard
ok so I chose half-orc where do I see the traits?
If you have the listings in the app, look for the races and then the traits tab
Constitution is your physical well-being. It's used primarily for your Max HP, but could also be used to test your endurance or to withstand a poison.
Constitution is basically how resistant you are to illness, poison, toxic effects, exertion… Dexterity gives a measure of how nimble or deft you are in some tasks such as picking locks or fine work or finesse.
Dexterity is physical agility. It's used for ranged weapon attacks. It's often added to your AC to make you harder to hit.
For being stealthy 🥷🏻
and what do these modifiers do and why can I just mkae them aqll 100
Normally the max you can get for any of those is 20, for starters.
so I can just make all of them 20?
cus that's pretty OP
No
Your ability scores are generated in one of three ways. You should ask your DM which method they want you to use.
Those are all described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd stick with Standard Array or Point Buy, to be safe.
(DMs that have you roll typically want to be present for that roll, and might have their own additional criteria.)
I did the standard array but i can just put any number I want in the modifiers
My advice: just get a feel for which stats you want to prioritize, and don't sweat the actual numbers until you've discussed with your DM.
No, your modifiers are based directly on the ability score.
10-11 is a +0, 12-13 is +1, etc.
no the thing called "Other modifier"
You can see the full list here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Those Other Modifier and Override boxes are typically used for temporary changes during gameplay.
so I leave them empty?
Like the effect's of a shadow's strength drain.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/shadow
Yeah, for now, I would leave them empty.
You can customize those, too, however you like.
So there isn't really a "best". Just pick whatever excites you.
that's a hard one
Folk Hero is a popular one for bards, I think.
Backgrouds give flavor, just have fun with it. Whatever you feel will make the character fun to play
Your background won't really effect that.
At best, your background is a chance to explain why you're strong.
ooooooh
For example: maybe you were a gladiator.
But you can pick Strength skills like Athletics as part of your background.
how?
Or a bouncer, and you looooved the bands and learned music afterwards, but you’re still a bouncer
If the background you want doesn't have the skill you want, just select Custom Background instead.
And you can adjust things however you like.
@pure wharf Have you read through the section in the basic rules on making a character step by step?
☝🏻 The builder basically just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, in order.
I tried but I didnt really understood most of it
Making a character is a bit scary at first but the app makes it really painless
You can read about custom backgrounds here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#CustomizingaBackground
ok so I chose the soldier one and moved on to physical characteristics and I dont know how I want most of my character to look
like hair
what am I supose to say?
colour?
length?
how it feels??
do orcs even got hair?
Do you want yours to have hair? That's the only question that matters.
If you want them bald, make them bald.
You can upload a character portrait, if you'd rather show than tell.
It's just description and has no real mechanical gameplay effect
Only you and your DM will ever see this section anyway.
yea I know but I want my first character to have it all
that's fine - just put in whatever makes sense to you
it's like notes for you and your DM to use when trying to describe your character to others
but otherwise it has no gameplay effect
i dont know how to describe him though
Is he tall?
6'5 so yea
How would you describe a tall MMA fighter who likes to sing? (you said a strong bard right?)
lmao yea
so tall, well-muscled body, short-cropped hair (military right?), chiseled chin, a gleam in his eye and a mouth that looks ready to open and belt out a song
add other details to season
helloooo
can I dm you what it looks like?
cus I dont have space to say all of these things
No thank you - I got to get going here soon
ok
but feel free to use #character-discussion if you need more help
ty
and with that - have a great day everyone!
new dm here. I have a question about VTT's
What sort of questions Lelay?
im wondering if i buy CandleKeep on D&DBeyond if i have to then buy it on roll20 to beable to use it? or if i buy it on D&DBeyond is there a map that i can use in discord for my players
You get all the maps as high Res images when you buy the adventure on D&DBeyond
so its basically a digital book
As far as the map goes, yes.
so if you buy a book in roll20.net, you get all the monsters, maps, tokens, magic items, character options etc as part of that, already set up and ready to go. if you buy on ddb, you can use that material to set it up on roll20, basically like when you buy it there, but with a lot more work
thanks!
hellooo i just got into liking dnd and ive tried to read the rules but its alot for me. ive already made my own oc with a class and race and all that but in a few days im going to a group in my town that plays dnd irl, what should i know and be prepared for when i go there?
(ping me if you respond pls)
Hey all, do I gotta have a proper grasp on dnd to play, or do any DMs not mind railroading a beginner?
Completely new here and never played before, but figured I'd give it a try
You should tell the DM you might need some guidance and then I recommend watching youtube videos that simplify the basic rules and what the different classes and races do :)
Appreciate it bruv
What is the best Virtual Tabletop thats compatible with D&D Beyond

hello there i may not be new to dnd but i'm new here so ...
how do you know what your milestones are and how many xp points you have
In the PHB it says how much XP you need to level up
What is PHB
All I have done is created 3 characters, and watched some youtube videos and still confused
It’s the core book of the game
It’s an expansion on the free basic rules
To help explain XP a bit more. To get from Level 1 to Level 2 you need 300 XP. Which you get for overcoming challenges like beating monsters
do you have to defeat the monster or the group you are playing with
i know what xp is I am wondering where it will be
The monster and you work together with the other players to do so
XP is short for Experience
is that on my character sheet
It should be at the top
i am looking at my character sheet now and do not see it. and is that something I need to keep up with during the game?
Could you show a picture of the sheet
Depends on the game - many games now use “milestone” leveling where the DM will say “okay you level up” after a milestone and XP isn’t tracked by players
Just beat me to it
No you just update your current one
okay. they will show me how to do all that
I made my characters on dndbeyond
okay, do I need to take that with me to every game I play
Unless you memorize everything
Xp should be at the top below character name
and do hit points change every game? as in if I have 9 hit points total and I lose 4 during the whole game, does that mean I only have 5 hit points left
Until you get healed
I heavily heavily recommend you read through the basic rules I linked earlier
It should answer 90% of your questions
okay
that will give me something to do tomorrow.
is there any games on here to play or is this just for help
Mainly a campaign would be best played with friends rather than random strangers, not to mention how long sessions can be depending on who you're playing with
You’ll only see the XP bar beneath your character name if your character sheet is set to use XP.
If it’s set for Milestone, that bar will not show.
You can change it in your character settings if needed.
Either way, when it’s time to level up, you’ll need to edit your character, go to the Class tab, and add a level to whichever class you want to add it to.
As for finding a game, we’ve got a few channels to help you with that. 👇🏻

Me and my friends are starting our first ever time playing dnd i've been assigned dm does anyone have any tips or tutorial on being the dm?
- Run a published module for your first time out. Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on dndbeyond and designed for first-timers. I also like Dragon of Icespire Peak.
- You will all make mistakes. That’s normal!
- Almost every problem can be worked out with an open and honest discussion with the group.
- Don’t solve out-of-game problems with in-game solutions
- If everyone (including you!) has fun, you’re doing it right.
- If you can’t quickly figure out how a rule works, make a ruling and say “this may change next time, after I’ve had time to think about it”
- Drink plenty of water
- Ask any specific questions you’ve got in #dm-discussion
thank you so much for answering hopefully i'll make my players have a fun time
There’s some good advice here, too:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
thank youuuu i'll read up on that too
Does anyone know if Roll20 or Foundry VTT allows you to use maps from campaigns others created?
Greetings! any DM who can spare me sometime to learn dnd? i memorized the essentials kit rulebook in advance as to not be a hassle and can accommodate any time restrictions,
just keep in mind, it's my first time, english isn't my first language, and may or may not question you about anything and everything outta curiosity

so i need to find a game not a DM?
A DM runs the game
So if you want a game, you'll need a DM
If you want a DM, you'll need a game
If you just have general questions about the rules, though, feel free to ask.
I just started and I have never played before is there anything important I need to join a game
An open mind, a set of dice, and imagination. 🙂 (the dice are optional, but someone will need them for rolling)
Ok thanks
It helps to have access to the Player's Handbook, too. Though there's a certain website that helps will all that. 😉
Anything else important to know?
To be a player, not really. I'm sure there are a hundred questions you'll have once you get going with making characters, and whatnot, but there really isn't anything uber important you need besides just yourself (and other people) to play.
Ok thank you
You bet
hello. where do we talk about One dnd at? I just downloaded the pdf
dungeon master since 2002. started on adnd 2nd edition and tried every edition but I didn't buy books for 4e. just the starter box
#one-dnd-discussion-archive is the place to talk about it :)
what weapons are martial weapons or simple weapons
Each table of weapons is labelled and should indicate whether those are simple or martial weapons.
Specifically, the first two tables are simple weapons, and the second two are martial.
ok
Does anyone use Roll20 to play? I just played my 1st session today and I am new to the system
I play in a group of two that use roll20, yeah
It seems a lot easier to navigate for a newbie like me. At first it seemed overwhelming
Yeah, it's cool. Though has some issues. I'm curious to see what WotC does for VTT. Definitely has a lot of setup requirements for a DM
roll20 does, I mean
I get ya
I think the dnd vtt will still require a lot of setup but hopefully it’s more streamlined and cooler
I just hope they have models for all the playsettings. It will be cool to have two spelljammer ships 5ft apart going at it in a battle
Yeah, that would be cool
The only thing I fear is how much we’ll have to pay for those assets
Yeah. That's always a fear. 😦
It would be cool though at the beginning, every dm will set up a one shot adventure with an adult dragon to beat at the end just to see how it looks
Hey everybody, ive been a dnd player many times with close friend groups, but recently the idea of DMing has been of interest to me. Ive done a one shot before with close friends, but im struggling to find the ability to dm with a group of randoms. A bit of a mix of the confidence and a bit of a lack of knowledge. Anybody have useful tips or resources to use that could be nice? (Specifically 5e if that matters, but i doubt it does)
Hey, I'm really new to all this so I have a question....
Why am I trying to buy book, ebooks, and campaign materials, a subscription to three or four different hosting platform, just to pay every time I want to play a single game? Especially if the books and ebooks are getting updated and replaced, none of the ebooks transfer between platforms, no one program does half what it's sold as..... Like why am I not just playing a dungeon crawler on my Xbox. Is that the new gate keeping for this? Micro transactions are the standard?
Taking this question as sincere, you not having to do those things
- You don't have to buy stuff multiple times. In fact you don't have to buy anything as the basic rules are all you need to get started and are free
- A lot of people just invest in one format, be it physical books, D&D Beyond, roll20, or fantasy grounds
- You don't have to pay to play a single game; pay to play games are not the default and in fact we have two channels for finding games that don't have a cost; #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356
- None of the books are getting replaced, certainly not within the next 2 years. One D&D is in playtest and even when it does release, you'll still be able to play using the books you have now
Also, a lot of DMs content share so there's a chance that you won't have to spend any more and will still have access to all the books
I've been posting on the looking for boards and the only answers I get are for pay to plays.
Then you need to specify that you're opting out of that option
Hi! New to D&D Beyond here, I am wondering if the platform D&D Beyond has a feature to redeem Physical Books into the virtual "Source" compendium? Thanks in advance for the guidance 🙂
That's why 'Opt Out' is part of the template; we know a lot of users don't want to pay for games
I don't know if it's just a I'm new to discord and using it or if I just don't have any luck and am I the wrong place.
It doesn't have an option to redeem physical books, no
The only physical/digital bundle currently available is the Dragonlance Bundle available through the Wizards store
Dully noted! Thanks Davyd!
Finding a game can take a while, it favours DMs more than players (as there's a lot more of the latter than the former)
@cosmic ravine I think you have the wrong channel
Hey guys, I'm really new to D&D, I've made a basic character using Beyond, any advice on starting out?
You can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free, though.
Or you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass. (Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.)
If you want character advice, feel free to share a link to your character sheet in #character-discussion.
I will do thank you
Otherwise we’ve got a few helpful starter links in the pinned messages, or you can head over here to find a game. 👇🏻
I've done that with upper mid lvls of success. Check the forms for a how to Homebrew because it will help

I'm starting with little knowledge or D&D but a strong desire to engage, relax and have fun.
Looking forwward to exploring the channels on here with a view to playing a session online very soon ideally suited for a new player so a litle bit of "hand holding* needed as I become familiar with the basic rules and, the flow of play.

Welcome!
Hello everyone
I am a newcomer on DND but I started when I realized the game off stranger things season 1. Now I just want to be dungeon master and scare all of my friends into great fear.
I just want to become a dungeon master for all of the people who are looking for one because everyone wants to be a player. If you need any Dungeon Master, i can help.
Welcome! You may want to grab the DM role from #880965682462875679 and check out the #dm-discussion channel if you want to discuss things or bounce ideas off of fellow DMs.
Hi!
Im very very new to this game (as in i just made a dnd beyond account today and made a character)
Im here to make a few friends and have some fantasy fun. I've always held a liking towards the game and ideas but have never been able to play/get into it.
If anyone wants to play with me I'd prefer if you were 16 and under, and LGBTQ+ friendly.
:)
Welcome
hi im new to the game but caunt waight to learn as much as i can about the game
Hello me and 3 others are looking for our first dm where do we find us

Hi i'm new to D&D and i'm looking for a group that can teach me all the basics.
I never played D&D and what little I know is from RPG and MMO games
Hey people! I’m looking to start a campaign, got any tips?
what type of players do you have??
Me?
Dm, I’m going to write it then put it in looking for players so I don’t make them wait, I already have a grasp on what it’s gonna be about and I want some tips to make it more fun and also for the game to make sense
do some research, and make it fun.....depending on the type of players you're looking for...if they like role play give them some problems they need to accomplish without fighting. If you're looking for smash and kill players, then give them a ton of stuff to stab at.....
I play with a group where we have both types so the DM's often put a little of both columns in. I love doing the research into where we play.....the role play is why I started playing years ago.
I feel like I would love to see how they murder them
sometimes you can be very creative.
We are currently playing a one off where we are 20th level....we had to attack 3 Bronze Dragons....as they wouldn't let us pass. We tried everything to get by them without attacking them, when all was said and done we had to....we did get very creative in trying not to kill them.
Oo
our DM was rather amused.
Lol
I getting to the point where imma do 50 percent rp and the other some violence
sounds like a good mix....how long have you been playing for?
I’m sorta new I guess I’ve played a couple campaigns though
But imma gonna keep playing to see how it works
nothing wrong with that, just have fun with it.
Yeah
I like helping out the new peep, as I've been playing going on 30ish years.
our current campaigns are going on 2 years now.
and we play about once a week online.
Speaking of years sadly my voice hasn’t gone lower yet to sound more mature
it will come.
I hope
time eventually hits all of us. speaking of playing I think we are about to start....keep having fun.
I need some help with adding a monster-
Just had my second ever DND session and it was a blast. I got invited to join a newish game(they were 4 sessions in). So far even though I'm not totally sure what I'm doing every one has been super helpful and welcoming at the table and across the web as I ask my Noob questions.
Hi new to dnd anyone have any games I can join

What kind of help did you need?
What are custom origins? (Not custom lineage)
Customising your origin is a set of rules introduced in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything that allows you to change a races ability score bonuses, language, and proficiencies
I'm newer and I'm not sure what I should do in the case of doing something kind of douchy that I know my character would do 100% but I also know the other people in my party wouldn't like do I meta game and not do it or do I stick to my character and be a jerk
I need help with the attacks I don’t really know how they work..
I know you aren't going to like this answer, but the real answer is don't make a character that would do things like that
D&D is a team game. Make a character who is a team player
Originally I didn't but he ended up being like that ie jump the gun type of guy he's supposed to be really young so I'm trying to play him as young
Making an attack is described in the base rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
You can read the entire base rules for free on D&D Beyond. The link is pinned in this channel
Kind of like he wants to help he really does but he gets impatient and makes bad decisions
well, one of the most defining characteristics of someone that is young is that they grow. Have them learn to be a better person
Sounds like it's time for your character to start growing up and learning self-control 🙂 That's a bit trite, but having a flaw like that offers you a chance to tell a story as your character learns, grows and matures.
Ok got it
I need help with the party where it’s says Hit:7 ( 1d6 + 4 ) im confused
1d6+4 would be your damage. So the first thing you do is roll to see if you hit. If you do, then you roll for damage
Hit. Any damage dealt or other effects that occur as a result of an attack hitting a target are described after the "Hit" notation. You have the option of taking average damage or rolling the damage; for this reason, both the average damage and the die expression are presented.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#MeleeandRangedAttacks
Ok, and what is the hit:7
7 is the average of 1d6+4
Oh-
Averages are listed on monster stat blocks, if the DM wants to use that instead of rolling. Only the DM gets that option though. Players must always roll
I’m most likely gonna roll for the fun of it
Thats very common, yeah. I'd say most DMs choose to do that as well
Oh yeah is the armor class already on the monsters health? Or nah
IDK what you mean by "on the monster's health"
If you mean the stat block, yes their AC should be listed on there
If you are looking at a monster stat block, It will usually list their armor class first, and then their HP is directly below that
Kk
Goblin
Small Humanoid (Goblinoid), Neutral EvilArmor Class 15 (leather armor, shield)
Hit Points 7 (2d6)
Speed 30 ft.
so this goblin has 15 AC, and 7 HP
Example the flying sword is 17 hit points, then the armor class is 17, I push that together and that’s it’s total hit points plus armour class?
Why are you adding HP and AC together?
Cuz I’m stupid and I dont understand something
Ok, I'll explain the process real quick
Kk
A player wants to attack the goblin. The player has +8 to their attack roll
They roll a d20. If the number on the d20 plus 8 is equal to or greater than 15, they hit
Then the player rolls damage. This is determined by what weapon they use. Lets say its a short sword. 1d6+5.
Whatever they roll on the d6, you add 5 to that, then subtract the total from the goblin's HP
Then the goblin gets to go through that same process to attack the player
Oh kk
(the numbers I used were all examples. Just look at the process, rather than the actual numbers)
I get it nowwwwww
great 👍
So the armor class is how high you have to roll, My players have to face an armour class 17
that's correct
But they get their attack bonuses and such, so AC 17 is not as bad as it might seem. ACs typically range from 10 to 25, with anything over 20 being reserved for higher level play most of the time (but not always)
what race can get me awesome weapons
Any of them. Awesome weapons tend to be magical and those are not tied to specific races
Anyone can use any weapon. If you're proficient with the weapon, you can add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll. If you're a size Small character using a Heavy weapon, you'll attack at Disadvantage. A few races come with weapon proficiencies, but most of the time your class will determine what weapons you're good with.
just make sure you pour silver over taht bad boy
you never know when you might to have to fight a wraith
I suggest you read the Basic Rules or Players Handbook to get an idea of what classes do what.
ok
Hi
Ok, do you have any more questions we can help you with?
Hi, Wondered if anyone could offer some advice (quite a new dnd player here)
My next session of dnd I am potentially expecting to be interrogated by other player characters, (Specifically 1 that my PC dislikes) I have no issues in telling the truth but I do not wish to be forced to tell it, i wish to be allowed to choose.
The PC that I believe will interrogate is a Paladin, and my guess is they will use Zone of Truth. Which I know even with a failed save I can simply choose not to answer the questions and thats that.
But I also know they have a Command spell, my assumption would be they could use the command of Answer along with ZoT to force me to answer the question.
What i am after is how do I avoid lieing but also not wanting to answer in this manner.
I am unsure if when commanded i can simply respond with I do not wish to answer while magically commanded which is a truth but kind of avoids the question so not sure if that can be used.
Any advice would be great 🙂
think of it as a police interrogatin
interrogation
tell only the absolute minimum and be vague
like where were you at 7pm on 8-22 you can truthfully say anything from last year or the year before that you remember
its not a lie and not what they are looking for
use their wording against them
Ok thanks so just be vague but as you say its not a lie just may not be the answer they want
be vague and general, find the loop hole
Few other questions I had.
Can a PC simply walk out of the ZoT therefore after 1 attempt at being forced to answer the spell no longer affects me?
Also if the command spell is used do i understand it correctly that the Paladin would have to expend multiple spell slots to keep me answering as it would only force me to answer that 1 question
I am hoping it does not come to it but seeing as our 2 PC's dislike each other quite a bit i fear it will 😦
i have no knowlege of the technical aspects of spells
That's the way I understand them
Thanks guys 🙂 Well we'll see how Wednesday evening goes now 🙂
good luck
Y’all, I need some help
State the help needed and we might be able to help.
Kk
So I need more help with adding a monster ,
It says weapon attack 6+ to hit I don’t understand-
Do you have to roll 6+ to hit on a weapon attack?
When the monster rolls an attack roll (a D20), you add +6 to the roll to determine whether it hits or not (barring natural 1s which always miss and natural 20s which always hit).
DDB usually adds that +6 to the attack itself so it's all ready to go.
(if using the encounter builder/combat tracker)
So you add +6 to the roll to determine if it hits or not
Roll a d20 and add 6 to it - yes
The notation may have been written weird but generally yes, it's just a D20 + the "to hit" bonus of the weapon/attack
The 1d10+4 is a damage roll
Just realized
To translate:
+6 to hit, hit: 7 (1d6 + 4)
means their attack roll (attack rolls use a d20) adds +6, then compares the result to see if they meet or beat the AC.
Then, if they do hit their AC, they deal an average of 7 damage, because the effective average for 1d6 + 4 damage would be 7 for D&D.
Does the centaur have a weapon?
Typically you roll the damage dice, but the average notation is very helpful for a DM wanting to guage about how much damage per round a creature can deal when building encounters.
Pike, hooves and longbow
Does it count?
(weapons that the centaur has - it also uses a multiattack feature when it attacks meaning it attacks with more than one attack)
I see
What does the statblock say for that weapon?
a Centaur has "Multiattack: The centaur makes two attacks: one with its pike and one with its hooves or two with its longbow."
Pike is +6 to hit, and on a hit that deals 1d10 + 4 damage.
Hooves is also +6 to hit, dealing 2d6 + 4 damage.
Longbow is only +4 to hit, dealing 1d8 + 2 damage.
Pike is a proper weapon, as is a longbow, but the hooves aren't really a weapon that can be disarmed from the centaur, or picked up after the fight.
A "natural" weapon if you will.
But let's not dive into the mess that that causes with certain classes
Either way, they are all "weapon attacks"
Yes even the hooves count as "weapons"
Melee Weapon Attack, +6 to hit, hit: 2d6 + 4 bludgeoning damage.
It's just a whole can of worms when it comes to a melee weapon attack that isn't an attack with a weapon, like an unarmed strike... for now, probably don't bother going into that.
All attacks fit into one of four categories based on a pair of factors. They're either Melee Attacks or Ranged Attacks, and they're either Weapon Attacks or Spell Attacks. In broad strokes(with a few exceptions), melee is used to describe close contact attacks, ranged used for attacks where a projectile is fired at the target. Spell attacks are used with spells and spell-like magical effects, and weapon attacks are made with things that are purely physical(though they may be magically enchanted, such as a magic sword).
hello,
for the looking for dm channel.
do we just DM them?
i have no idea how this work
Yeah, if you're interested in a game being advertised in #looking-for-players , you send the person a private message
okie!
so...
i just realized
if you want to search for dm you go to the #looking-for-players
and not the looking for dm...
sigh
welp time to search from the start again!
Players can advertise they are looking for a game to join in #750812887697588356. #looking-for-players is where DMs advertise they are looking for players.
Apologies, I did use the wrong autocomplete
i have dived into the #looking-for-players
but i don't think the recent post are compatible with our current group.
Check back regularly as it changes frequently.
i just send my own advertising on #750812887697588356
hope we got a dm
can anyone show me how to use dnd beyond? ive made a character but dont know how to use it
What are you trying to do; look up information, track limited resources like health, or roll for attacks, ability checks, or saving throws?
ok nvm i got some help
one thing im unsure abt is how do i play together in dnd beyond
I like playing characters that generally are more support based in games. So as someone inexperianced with dnd what's like a good support class
Just keep in mind it's basically just a character sheet and book library.
It facilitates play about as much as a forum (literally) and an actual sheet of paper would, aroundabout. The DDB sheet is just hyper-convenient.
DnDBeyond is just digital tools and rules to help people play D&D -it's not really an online digital play space per se.
Never used dnd beyond
But i think as a DM you can Share your stuff with Players?
So they can fill Out there online character Sheets with all the source Material
But i personally recommend paper Sheets or the WotC PDF sheets
its kind of a basic question but i used the site to make a character and now i dont know how to start playing how do i find people to play with and how do i change my character after completing one game and starting another.
When you create a campaign group on D&D Beyond, if someone in the group has a Legendary Subscription they can enable Content Sharing, so that purchased books can be shared with everyone in the group. Anyone in the group can be the one with the subscription, and then the one who created the group can enable/disable specific books. For example, if they're running a published campaign they can disable that book so the players can't read ahead.
You'll need to find a group to play with, there are many places to look. This Discord, the D&D Beyond website forums, Reddit, your local game store, etc. And when you finish with one group and start with another, you usually roll up a new character. Generally it's good to wait until you have a group before rolling up a character for it. They may have their own rules for races or classes that are allowed in that game, what method is used to roll your ability scores, plus the concept you came up with might not fit into your group's game world from a story perspective. But it's definitely good to practice making characters on the site so you become familiar with the mechanics.
That might be a better question for the #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion channels, but there are lots of ways to play a supporting role. Bards are very good at aiding their allies and hampering their foes as opposed to directly causing damage, plus they can heal. Clerics and Druids are also solid support classes, but party roles aren't strictly defined for the different classes, so you have a lot of flexibility.
Also sorcerers and wizards have Lots of Support spells
So they have a incredible amount of ability to Control the Battlefield If you Focus on it.
And If you Look at spezific subclasses every class has atleast 1 Support oriented one.
So literally any class you wanna Play can be a support
In there own way
D&D is unfortunately not designed like an MMO, so every character needs to be self sufficient to some degree. Healers/Supports/Tanks are not really a thing in this game, the same way they are in a video game. There are buff spells and healing spells of course, but they are honestly kinda weak. Crowd Control is extremely powerful in D&D though. There are ways to play support and help your other party members in this game, but that can't be a character's entire focus. You'll need to do some damage too
Alright then thank you all for the info. I assumed I'd need to do some damage myself at least. But the info is really nice to know thank you
ok thanks for the help
is 10+ pages of notes overkill for a first dnd sessions? im dming for my friends and its their first time playing and my first time dming. I'm doing a one shot for them so they get a grasp on the basics of the game and im just worried im overpreparing. Can i even overprepare?
yes, overpreparing is definitely a thing. While this isn't true for everyone, the general tendency for people is that the more you prepare, the more you feel like you need to rely on that preparation. If you spend all your time prepping every single nook and cranny of your world, then the moment something goes outside of what you prepared, you will likely get flustered and need to stop and regroup/reprepare. In general, its better to prep things just enough that you feel comfortable with understanding the thematic of your world, so that you can improv things just as easily as you can run them off your own notes
Also, there are certain things you actually should not prepare, interestingly enough. For example, you shouldn't design an adventure to have a single intended solution. The fun of a table top game is decision making, and a DM's job is to present the players with challenges for them to think of a solution to. You shouldn't design solutions for them to try to reach
hello, everone a new player hear looking at playing
hi there, I know very little ab dnd but I really want to try it out with someone. Hmu if you're looking for party! I'm on German time

If I join a D&D game as a player using discord and D&D beyond, do I need to have a subscription to D&D beyond?
You only need a subscription if you want any of the following:
- more than 6 characters
- ability to use homebrew that others have published
- access to tools that are in alpha
- subscriber perks
- [Master Tier Only] ability to share purchased content
That is good news, I can play with a DM that has it
I would like to offer word of encouragement to newcomers. I was a first time DM with a small group back in 1980, using D&D, with no numbers/letters behind it! Youngest players were 10 years old. Elementary school reading, writing, and arithmetic are all you need. Do NOT be afraid! Relax and have fun!
I'm playing with a Discord group now, using AD&D 5e. Doing it with a damaged brain, thanks to kind friends. 75 years old, and not ready to hang up my dice!
wow thats amazing
and really cool to see that after 40 years you are still having fun with the game
D&D really is that wide and deep. Innovative over the years, for both better and worse, but evolving and always flowing with creative juices that players put to work!
So just a question
Do I have to buy a book to be able to use Necromancy spells on D&D Beyond
No, there are plenty of necromancy spells in the basic rules
just that some books can have some more spells, such as Xanathar's Guide to Everything, which has a neat roster of spells.
yeah they're just a certain school of spell, which innately doesn't mean anything, it just has a few niche interactions like mostly subclasses looking for a certain school of spell.
Like how Evocation doesn't actually do anything to the spell itself, but an Eldritch Knight finds themselves looking at basically only that and Abjuration.
So, new player, old guy lol.. havent played since Jr. High.... how to i get started
Hello
If you need a crash course on the rules for 5th Edition, and want to see how it differs from previous versions, a link to the free basic rules is pinned in this channel
Once you have a handle on the rules, you'll need to find a group to play with. This can be in person, with friends or at a local game store, or it can be online. You can find players and DMs looking for new members in various forums and websites, including in this server
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
Awesome! Thanks!
Aside from what’s in the free Basic Rules, you can also buy spells individually. Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Another question, what level for Cleric will I be able to use Speak With The Dead?
Speak with Dead is a 3rd-level spell.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/speak-with-dead
Clerics unlock 3rd-level spell slots at level 5.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#TheClericTable
If you look at a class' description, you will see the spell slots they have at each level. They can only learn/prepare spells that they have spell slots for. So just check the level for Speak With Dead, and check the Cleric's class description to see when they get spell slots of that level
Ohhh
Quick question.... What's the best way to find groups? I'm completely new to this so Im thumbling through at the moment. Thank you in advance
Also if anyone feels helpful or is interested in letting join your group add feel free to message or add me. Thank you

Thank you. I'll have a look today and see what I can find
im dming for my friends soon its their first time playing dnd and my first time dming im kinda nervous and feel like I've overprepared any advice on running the game and whatever else for new dm?
Lay your signposts, don't be afraid to make it up as you go, and let the chaos begin

Hi all.
Discord is an incredible resource for d&d PnP type play if you can't find a local group. I am currently playing here with a DM from NC, myself and grandson from KY, another from CO, and final from Canada!
Forgive my ignorance but what is PnP?
Pen and Paper
Thanks!
Hi! I'm completely new at this, I'm trying my hand at D&D beyond but tbh it's all a little overwhelming? what should I do after making a character for the first time? thanks! ❤️
Have a read through the basic rules
Not cover to cover or anything, just the sections that pique your interest
Best is learn by doing with experienced players. The seeming complex is made clear when you get your hands bloody!
I would disagree
You can pick D&D up pretty well with a group of newbies
In fact, my first group as DM was all newcomers to the game and it went great
that sound like a hassel though getting a whole bunch of newbies through a campain
Actually, that was my first experience with bacic D&D, no number/letter yet back in 1980. All newbies. Much more simple then.
might make it even better now that i think a bit
Honestly, it was fine as everyone was there to figure out the rules and keep things moving forwards
Is there a game for a newbie like me could join?
Hi there. I am going to be running a one shot if you'd be interested
What is a oneshot?
just a one off game rather than an ongoing campaign with multiple sessions
Okay, mind if I join?
sounds good to me. I'll PM you
Hello 👋🏻. I was wondering if anyone knows how long the sale will be on the dndbeyond books?
The sale will end Sept 5th 🙂
Is the sale only on certain books?
Not everything is on Sale - there will be newsletters and an article out in the morning (US time), but the Sale went live a few hours ago
Thanks Sorce 😄
Happy to help - however on that note its Friday evening and I have dinner with friends to get to!
Enjoy your dinner
Thanks, I couldn’t see when it ended in the email. Now to decide what to get.
If you want to ask about books you are trying to decide between, let us know 😄

The bundles are on sale as well aren’t they?
yes
All the sourcebooks that I don’t have for 103
looks like you've got all the important ones already
Just a quick note that Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes has been replaced by the newer Morenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. As such, MTOF itself is no longer available for purchase.
Thanks, I forgot to change it when they updated it
All good! Just didn’t want you to grab the bundle and then worry when you couldn’t find it.
Is there a feat where a barb can have the creature attack solely them?
or an item or skill?
Not exactly, but
Ancestral Guardian (subclass for Barbarian) is amazing at saying "Hey look at me"
No. D&D is not an MMO, so there isn't any true way to "pull aggro" or anything like that. The best you can do is incentivize enemies to attack you with something like the Ancestral Protectors feature for the Path of the Ancestral Guardian barbarian.
Ok
and most "pull aggro"-like abilities in 5E aren't "they can only attack you", they're usually something like "they have disadvantage on attacks against targets other than you"
Where, paraphrased heavily. Smack someone, tag them for the guardians. They now have disadvantage on attacking anyone but you, and deal half damage on attacks that hit anyone but you. Also, if an ally is hurt close to you, you can reduce the damage.
So, it becomes hugely inefficient to take disadvantage and half damage, you become an absolute lord of "look at me"
Lasts until the start of your next turn, and it's the first attack that hits. And it's only while raging.
Ok
Its important to remember that the NPCs you are fighting in this game are not AI. The DM is playing them to be as realistic as possible, which means every creature is capable of rational decision making, or at least as rational as it can be for whatever creature type it is. If you incentivize the enemies to attack you, they might do so, but they might decide its more valuable to attack someone else as well. Thats also why grappling, or feats like Sentinel can be useful, since they stop enemies from getting past you and towards your back line
And of course, some enemies might just flat run away
And yes, they're driven by another person, not game AI.
Total benefits:
You're a raging barbarian. Take half damage from bludgeoning, piercing, slashing.
That thing you're attacking and want to look at you, has disadvantage on attacking anyone else, and any damage they deal from attacking is resisted (half damage).
Also, by 6th level, you get a power to reduce damage someone takes in 30 feet of you. It's just good.
You can't force them to target you, but you can make it a really bad decision not to.
It's a very abstract "role" when it comes to DND - it becomes "how can I attract the most attention" instead of just standing somewhere
what's the ability that makes enemies have disadvantage on attack against anybody other then me
Ancestral Protectors, a 3rd level "Path of the Ancestral Guardian" barbarian subclass feature.
Compelled Duel is a Paladin spell that does that too
im curious, how does one get started with actually playing dnd? Like where do i find a dm?
If you want to play in person, you can get a group of IRL friends together, or you can see if your local game store is running a public game. If you want to play online, you can check online forums and other websites that help organize games. Also, this server has a few channels for helping players and DMs find each other.

is there an easier way to find monster who can fly and carry a heavy player?
because all i can think of is a dragon or griffin or Pegasus
Filtering by movement type and size on D&D Beyond should get you what you want.

Ok thank you
Holy shit i just hosted my first game of dnd for some of my best friends
I cant describe how much fun we had
I spent a lot of time planning and prepping and writing notes
We had such a blast and it got super intense at a bunch of points
At the very end they had to escape the dungeon which was crumbling on them
And they BARELY managed to escape and we were ROARING cheering when they got that successful roll and escaped the collapsing dungeon
It wad insane, they had a huge amount of fun and so did i
And im so happy they had such a great time and im really proud of myself too
I wish i could send a picture
This is my first time. I’m trying create characters, however some the races aren’t showing up. In the “create new character” portion. (I.e.: Minotaur, tortal (turtle race), centaur, Giff). How can use those races?
Oh, and when someone does respond, would you answer by a pm
Make sure you own the books on DnDBeyond or are building the character in a campaign with content sharing enabled and have those books.
The person who has set up a DnDBeyond campaign shares a link with you to access that campaign. If content sharing had been enabled on that campaign (which requires someone in the campaign having a master tier subscription) you will be able to build characters in the campaign using any DnDBeyond books that people in the campaign own.
Basically the character races come from the books - you either need to own the DnDBeyond version of the books or be able to access it through content sharing via a DnDBeyond campaign. Subscribing does not give you access to the books - they are separate.
You can also purchase the races individually without buying the whole book.
Or you can use the homebrew tools to recreate the race for your own personal use (do not publish)
None of the subscriptions include specific book content. The Master subscription lets you share already purchased content with a campaign group.
Only if you need content sharing enabled in a campaign. Hero tier only unlocks unlimited character slots, monthly subscriber perks, and access to tools
No subscription tier gives you books - they are separate purchases.
For example, I downloaded the Tortal package
Should’ve given access to the Tortal race
Given me access
Did you buy it on D&D Beyond?
On mobile app?
Yes
Then you should be able to select Tortle as a race…
Wait, did you buy it or not? It's a purchase on D&D Beyond.
I downloaded it on D&D beyond, on my phone
But if you didn't purchase it, how do you have access to it? Are you in a campaign group with someone who is sharing content?
No campaign. I’m trying to create a homebrew
Then how do you have access to something you didn't purchase?
I’ve currently only have access to the free content
And the Tortle Package is not free, that's the thing
I’ve got almost all the free stuff
The Tortle Package is 9.99: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/the-tortle-package
According to all the book listings: The Tortal package is a free download
I just linked to it where it's listed as $9.99
Where are you seeing it listed as free on D&D Beyond? Can you post a URL? Because it's in the Marketplace for $9.99
Wait, I think I got it… I can download almost all the books, but I can’t actually do anything with them.
Accurate statement?
That doesn't make sense either. If you could actually download the book, then either you bought it or it's being shared with you via a campaign group.
It’s a free download
But it's NOT, that's the thing. D&D Beyond doesn't give it away, they sell it.
In the D&D Beyond app, click on Library in the bottom left. Then at the top, search for "Tortle". What do you get?
Wizards of the Coast/DDB sell their books (with few exceptions) for some degree of money.
Try DMing it to me
Sent
You don't own it, it's being shared with you via a campaign group. You will only have access to it in the character builder for a character attached to that campaign.
But I’m not on any campaign
Do you see in your screenshot where it says "shared with me"? That means someone is sharing it with you via a campaign group.
In the mobile app, click on "Campaigns" in the bottom right, what do you see?
I replied via DM
Ah, brb
Hi....
welcome!
Thanks 🙂
If you're new to D&D - check out the pinned messages here in the channel
Lots of useful links and resources to help get you started.
Thank you 🙂 I am new. I have always been interested in D&D but never had anyone to really play with
I recommend starting by giving the free basic rules a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then DnDBeyond can help you make your first character so you can see how some of the rules work in connection with a character.
Then I suggest watching some D&D livestream shows (or YouTube videos of groups playing) to see how it kind of works in practice - just keep in mind that many of these are oriented towards entertainment first over teaching D&D rules.
Then try and find a group to play with - the best way to learn is to play!

Yeah I own a lot of the books on D&D beyond 🙂
I already have like 5 characters lol
1 is really fleshed out and has an in depth backstory
Thank you for the help 🙂
You're welcome! I hope you can find a great group to play with!
Quick question I want to be an teifling paladin weird right but I don't know which background to pick I have a backstory but every background kind of, half fits can someone help me out.
There’s nothing inherently weird about a tiefling Paladin
Ok all I wanted to know was what to do about the background
Tell me a little about your backstory.
I'd check with your DM and group to identify what backgrounds make the most sense for the campaign, setting, and group
alright thanks
Hi guys I’m new and I want to be a player I’m done for anything
Welcome! Take a look at the pinned messages here in the channel for some useful info and links to help get you started.
Then I'll just point to my previous message here: #dnd-newcomers message
I’m ready to kill stuff someone needs to take me on
Organizing a game takes time as people need to align real-life schedules and also align expectations for what kind of D&D game they want to play. Please be patient when trying to find a game - the biggest enemy in any D&D game is schedules.
hey all im a new player looking to start. i have some rule books and would ideally like to play online as easier to commit. love RPGs and the lore and world of DnD but none of my close friends are into it so figured this was best and easiest option.
Welcome!
How can I search for games for newcomers?
You ask the people posting about their game
Just direct message them and ask if it’s open for new players.
I just recently got into playing and only being able to play one campaign on one day a week is just not enough for me so I was hoping to find other newer people to play with as a second group to try and fill this void of having to wait an entire week to play.. someone HELP!! XD
Hi! I am having some issues with DMing. I am a new player that has the starter set story and I am struggling with learning how to DM. I am playing with 2 other new players but I have to be the DM. I don't understand how to read the story. I know you have to read the stuff in the boxes out loud but what do you do with the other info? Do you have to read it all before you let the players do anything? Sorry for the long message BUT I NEED HELP!!
What is the best option to dig into the lore of Forgotten Realms?
which classes have bows?
any character that gets proficiency (or takes a feat to get proficiency)
But to be more helpful, the classes "expected" to use Bows are Dex based Fighters, Rangers, and Rogues
monk too
got it thanks
only Kensei monk really
shortbows are simple. they're monk weapons
go for it. shrug
Greetings Vets and Noobs (I'm as green as they come)! Just wanted to drop in and say hello! Are there any beginner groups for people like myself? I come from a +4GMT time zone

use these channels to find groups. nod
ideally you should read the entire module before playing
or at least keep a couple chapters ahead of where the party is
Hello, I am completely new to this game and only have the basic rules book downloaded, but haven't read it yet. I am looking for someone who could help me learn how to play this game that is in CST and in the US. Is anyone willing to help me?
I really recommend reading through the basic rules, maybe try making a character on DnDBeyong to see how the rules work with character sheets, watching some videos/livestreams of people playing, then try and find a group to play with.
If you have a specific question, feel free to ask. But generally asking for someone to take time to teach you the whole thing is a bit like asking us to teach you to fly a plane.
I see, well I will just have to see what works best for me.
hey new to the group wassup
Welcome!
I’m finishing up four different characters on DnD Beyond. I’m going to try the Frozen Sick campaign that comes free. I’ll see what happens. I want to work out as much as I can on my own before I look for a group.
Hello
Welcome
Hello! I'm New To dnd! I Hope I Can Have A Good Time Here!
i have never played dnd before, i saw a single video and thought it was cool
i dont know anything about dnd yet
New to DnD. Is it best to make a character and find a group, or find a group and make a character that fits the DM's campaign?
I would say it really depends on the campaign. Creating an evil aligned character in a good aligned party could create problems, especially if you aren't familiar with the deception/stealth system to try and hide your nefarious intentions. Most DM's i've played with have a session zero, where you can create your character with help from them and create a backstory to fill into the world the DM has crafted. As a new player, i'd recommend finding a campaign first and fleshing out a party that has a hole in some specialization.
Thanks! quite helpful
I would recommend building the character after finding the game - but feel free to build some test characters to see how it works.
If any new player is wanting to create a character before finding a game, i would strongly suggest making their alignment neutral, so you can fill into any party more easily.
I've gotten some help walking through the bare basics of character building, just need to find a game now :3
I'll also recommend being patient with finding a group - organizing a game among a bunch of different people's schedules and setting up the kind of D&D game everyone wants to play in takes time and effort. Be kind to your DM - most of the time they are trying to put together a fun game for everyone. But that said, if it isn't fun, speak up and ask to pause the game to identify why it's not fun and how best to fix it (if fixable) or what the next steps are (reboot, find a different group, etc.).

I'll also recommend looking up roll 20 on google. You can also find games there. ALSO if you're not apart of the main DnD discord, you can find postings there also.
Thanks for the advice! Being new to the game it will probably take a bit to find a DM and fellow players who wouldn't be too annoyed with lots of questions and some extra explaining. It looks like a lot of fun so I won't give up easily ⚔️
Most DMs and groups are okay with new to D&D players - as long as the player stays engaged and demonstrates that they are actually putting the effort to learn.
I’d suggest coming up with a few loose concepts at least. Then when you find a game, you can work with the DM to pick one that fits and fill in the final details.
Done and done. Without a group I'm having fun writing little back stories and fleshing out personality and motivation. 📚 Even if they don't get used I think it's good exp for faster fleshing out of a new character
Can an autognome technically eat?
I'm doing a my first dnd campaign and the player asked me.
So you probably already saw that you don't need to eat, drink, or breath (Mechanical Nature).
But being able to eat? It's actually not defined. Autognomes are constructs but even that definition doesn't tell us much:
(Monster Manual):
Constructs are made, not born. Some are programmed by their creators to follow a simple set of instructions, while others are imbued with sentience and capable of independent thought. Golems are the iconic constructs. Many creatures native to the outer plane of Mechanus, such as modrons, are constructs shaped from the raw material of the plane by the will of more powerful creatures.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/mm/introduction#Type
But given that Autognomes generally have features designed by their creators:
An autognome bears a resemblance to its creator, and most autognomes are programmed to speak and understand Gnomish. The internal components used in an autognome’s manufacture can vary wildly; one autognome might have an actual beating heart in its chest cavity, while another might be powered by stardust or intricate clockwork gears.
Roll on the Autognome History table or choose an entry that you like to identify what event set you on the path to adventure. If nothing on the table appeals to you, work with your DM to create an origin story for your character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/1121695-autognome
...I'd probably say generally speaking, if the creator wanted you to be able to do it, you could. So DMs call but lots of opportunity for player input. ✌️
Ty m8 I appreciate it
I picture it being like in pirates of the Carribbean when they drink a glass of wine and it just splashes across their ribs down to the floor
Autognomes, to me, are weird clockwork machines. So they probably don't have things like stomachs, and getting food caught in their gears is a Problem
But I mean if it's something you want to do, you can

ah. yes, then i was indeed looking at the pinned message. just wanted to make sure i understood 😄 thank you
question
I am doing my first campaign, I am a paladin, How does spellcasting work when it comes to paladins, how does spell preperation works
I'll DM you so as not to clog this channel 🙂
im new to the whole dnd beyond thing how does this all work?
Greetings everyone, I'm also completely new to DnD, i saw some videos of it and was always interested but never really had a friend to play with nor introduce me to the game, i would be very grateful if anyone could perhaps give me a hand and introduce me to the game or even play a game with me, im a quick learner and i think i have good imagination, so if it wouldn't bother u much pls help me out
New to DnD... always kept putting off and COVID killed my opportunity to get in something local. Willimg to learn and now building my book collection to learn the rules.
Utilizing the DND Beyond and hoping to get on a game.

This place is great... Already getting embroiled. A pity I cannot transfer the books I already own to the D&D Beyond
This article covers the basics.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond
If you’ve already got the physical books, you can use the homebrew system to recreate that content for free. (For private use only, though; please don’t publish it.)
Alternatively, you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
hello everyone i'm also new to D&D i dont know how the game works
Welcome! There’s some helpful starter links in the pinned messages here that will get you up to speed, but we’re happy to answer any specific questions you’ve got, too.
sorry im kinda slow where can i find the pinned message?
If you’re on desktop, there should be an icon of a pin in the top right corner.
On mobile, you need to swipe left to find it.
so basically if i want to know the basics of the game or to not burden my teammates for being a rookie
ill need to become a barbarian
I mean
Barbarian is a fine starting point
But you shouldn’t feel like you have to pick any particular class
it's more like a feel the game kind of thing
i feel barbarian should be a good first when u want to experience ingame
Fighter, Barbarian, or rogue are all pretty easy
yes i think its a good start
now what i need is to experience the game but where
You can try your local game store, find a game online, or try to put a group together yourself
If you just want to see the game played then there are plenty of actual play shows in both podcast and video formats.
i can't play in locals cause there is practically nothing as far as i know
i dont even dare mention this to my friends cause they do not know this game exist
yes ive been watching a DnD series right now
Just because they don't know about it doesn't mean they wouldn't like it lol
i know 1 that is interested but we're pretty far away and i cant dm
Anyway, try online games. I suggest looking to apply to as many as you can as it can be hard to get in. You can private message DMs who have listing on #looking-for-players or check out sites like roll20 or check reddit r/lfg.
There are paid games if you want to leave it less to chance or your application if that's an affordable option to you.
yeah ill try
but i kinda want if there are people who plays inside discord
i cant do roll20 cause my laptop's headset wont work
i can use my phone then to talk to my teammates and dm
Here are some tips when applying to a game:
- READ. Read their entire listing and make sure the time and playstyle works for you.
- Write a nice message. Don't just say "I'm new, can I play?"
- Be interested! Ask questions about the campaign and seem like you'd be a fun addition to the group.
the games are expensive if i remember i dont have spare right now
im pretty much unemployed
Most roll20 groups use discord for talking. I've never joined a group that didn't.
is this to the private messages?
That's to literally any game you apply to.
nice i hope i can find one
currently searrching games that accepts beginners
Almost all games do.
As long as you are willing to learn people usually don't mind teaching.
Hello I’ve mostly played warhammer RPG and Star Wars. I’m LFG that wouldn’t mind some one who makes a lot of jokes. In wow I would be taken on raids for my jokes. Not my ability to play.
Well, you sound like a great person for my campaigns, when I hold them
How would you use smith tools to repair something
In 1d20+mod
And how many can you do per action or at will?
Ultimately it's up to the DM how much time it will take and what additional materials may be required.
Okay
How to get hp because my druid has more hp the my monk and paladin
The base value is a combination of your level, hit die size, and constitution modifier.
So increasing your level or your constitution will improve your max HP.
There’s also feats like Tough that give you another +2 per level.
Racial traits like Dwarven Toughness that give you +1 per level.
Magic items
Temporary increases from spells

Ok my bad thanks for the info
They were level one -1 con
All of them?
They all were level one
Based just on class and CON, that should be 7 for the sorcerer and monk, and 9 for the paladin.
But if you really want a definitive answer, it's probably easier just to share a link to your character sheets.
A high elf
how do I join a campaign?
Newbie question. What specific purpose do Alchemist's Supplies serve? A Herbalism Kit makes potions and a Poisoner's Kit makes poisons, but where does Alchemy come in?
Herbalism kit makes health potioms only. Alchemist supplies are used for literally every other non-poison potion
usually via Crafting Rules
What other sort of potions are there? 🤔
If you go on D&D beyond, you'll see in the magic item section there's a whole category for potions
there's literally an entire magic item category for 'em. 😛
Got chya 👌
Is there a stun skill or holding skill fighters can get?
Stun, no
Grappling can be done with any class, though some are better than others
Fighter can get a fighting style for unarmed combat that makes them better at dealing damage when grappling
What about other useful crafting proficiencies? I come from MMO's, so I assume something like Jeweler's Tools would allow me to make jewelry that provide minor buffs
there are crafting rules that, with downtime, let you craft magic items, including using jeweler's tools.
Xanathar's Guide has the better rules for it
🤔
D&D is not an MMO, and doesn't take nearly the same degree of gameified approach to things
If you want to craft a magic item, it takes weeks, months, or years of work with rare materials and components
I realize it's not an MMO, hence me asking about the difference 😜
You said, and I quote "I come from MMO's, so I assume something like Jeweler's Tools would allow me to make jewelry that provide minor buffs"
This reads like you expected the same kind of mechanisms in D&D as there would be in an MMO.
I was simply explaining there isn't, the key reason being D&D is very different from an MMO
👌
Most tools do not provide buffs--rather, they allow you to do something you couldn't otherwise. Like thieves' tools (lockpick locks), or masonry tools (knockdown walls).
Anyone have a campaign I can join I’m new and kinda trying to figure out how to play
And mileage heavily varies by DM
@lyric fjord If you have access, check out Xanathar's; it has lists of tool uses: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/dungeon-masters-tools#ToolProficiencies
Thanks. I watched a few videos and now I get it. There's a handful of actual crafting tools/kits, but in the interest of prevent power creep, they are limited. Instead, there are many artisan tools/supplies meant to be used for RP and skill checks.
I made four characters! What do you think? The first two have some backstory and I’m still thinking on the latter.
Drow Twilight Cleric
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/81840632
Half Elf Paladin
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/82252619
Tiefling Rogue
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/82236649
Human Warlock of Cthulhu
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/82094251
I especially like the drow. The name sounds perfect
Thank you! I just realized the backstories are not visible. So here they are:
Imnalla Nirath killed Brinel Teken'tlar, daughter of the head of a powerful clan when she overheard Brinel was planning on killing her little Sister, Nema. She fled knowing Brinel’s mother, Lady Teken'tlar, would hunt her down.
She ran by the light of the moon through the forest, deep into a valley by jagged cliffs. There she met a rock giant, Helvog, that unexpectedly became her friend.
For a decade the moon, and Helvog, were Imnalla’s only companions. Then Selûne gave her blessing and called her forth.
And for the Half Elf Paladin:
Erras Oakenrock was never a healthy child, which was considered strange by the few who knew as she was the only daughter of Grace Fairhill and Aiduin Oakenrock, younger brother of Lord Ivaran Oakenrock of Neverwinter. A powerful, near ancient, line of elves they are unaccustomed to illness. The Clerics have kept Erras presentable, but were unable to permanently heal her.
To those with the temerity to ask Lord Oakenrock about Erras’s illness, her mother’s human blood is blamed for the weakness. But the Fairhill’s are a healthy family and quietly keep excellent records.
Aiduin Oakenrock appealed to The Green Man, Rillifane Rallathil, to make Erras his Cleric so she would always be able to heal herself. Rallathil agreed to take her as his representative when she came of age.
The Fey God does not lie, but he does enjoy bending the truth. When Erras came of age she was made a Palladian of Rillifane Rallathil.
Like that too Selune isn’t used very often
ive only been really playing for 2 weeks. my adhd made me impulsively buy 300 bucks of dnd stuff in the first week
games
im still clueless how to make my character
What part are you struggling with?
so i entered a game my dms a beginner to i think because its specify in the title of the game so we all learning
and the roll20 character sheet is an advanced sheet someone said now im struggling which of which
Well this channel (and server) is more focused on D&D Beyond than roll20 (or any other digital character sheet). You might want to ask your DM for help with the roll20 character sheet
yeah we will be doing it next week session and he's active in our group so ill be waiting
its just that the character sheets in dnd 5e it has skills like insight investigation then in our other sheet it doesnt have any of that
now im struggling to transfer my stats to the 5e sheet
Sounds like they're using a non-standard sheet or haven't selected the right sheet type
roll20 supports systems other than D&D
maybe
cause he said he still figuring out how it works and we all are also beginners
I recommend the roll20 forums for getting started there
thanks ill try to look into it
can some one teach me how to play Dnd i know i can read all the rules about the game but because i am Dyslexic its hard to read all of it
just the basics
I would recommend checking out the official D&D YouTube channel as well as handbooker helper on the Critical Role YouTube channel
Hello
hi
@solemn holly Greetings! Are you aware that once snared by this system, there is no escape? 😵💫
Hey everyone!! I’m getting back into D&D after a looooong time away. Tearing through the core 5E books this weekend - any other must-have material I should pick up (e.g., additional sourcebooks that are commonly used in campaigns)?
You might enjoy Xanathar's and Tasha's - they add additional options that are considered useful by many DMs and players.
Myself, I'd just stick with the core books and Tasha's and Zanathar's.
Which is kind of what I'm doing anyway.
And if you’re looking for an adventure to play, Lost Mine of Phandelver is available for free.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Lots of other fun choices out there, too, though.
Hi I’m new to d&d and have yet to play just been reading my starter kit books lol
Back to D&D after a while away. Just popping in to say Hello. Going to DM the new Starter Set for my teen daughters and their friends. Then not sure where we will move on from there.
Would like to play a character as well if I can find a good group.
Getting ready for my 3rd ever DnD Session. Things are going great but the group I play with has played for a while so I'm looking for tips and such for getting up to speed with RP and general player info. I can find plenty of youtube channels focused on DM's any suggestions for players?
For general player info or just some rules like stuff, the Handbooker Helper series by the Crit Role cast is a good resource. Each video is only a few minutes long and gives you the basis needed.
For RP, easiest thing to do is to play into a trope and find videos about that type of character. Then just practice with yourself or a friend and get into character. You will most likely see some of yourself creep in, but this is actually a good thing as it is easier to play a character and helps naturally avoid the "it's what my character would do" issue because your character is at least somewhat just you
I'm getting ready for my first ever dm session as a new player. Everyone I'm playing with are new players also, I'm looking for tips for dming and world building.
Tip #1 : have fun. Tip#2: as you run/play a session, remember the game is just a backdrop to having fun. Tip#3 : if someone wants to do something not covered by the rules, make up it as you go. Tip #4: the rules are optional. Tip#5 : have fun.
You as a dm are telling a story, how do you want others to have fun in that story, and if they end up going away from your ideas, run with it.
I think I wasn't as clear as I could/should have been. I'm a player not a DM. Most Youtube content is aimed at DM's I'm looking for content aimed at players.
hello im new to dnd and was wondering if someone could teach me or invite me to a sesssion
DungeonDraft, yay or Nay?
Can't answer that for you as I don't know what your mapping needs are or what exactly you're looking for. I've heard good things about it.
Of all the software availible outhere I meant
Best thing to do is check the pinned messages here in the channel and take some time to read through the free basic rules, watch some D&D livestreams or videos of people playing D&D, build a character or two to see how the rules work with character sheets, and then if you have a specific question we can help answer it. But most of us can't carve out 3 hours to teach you how D&D "works" or run demo games on the spur of the moment.
Thanks
Well do you need to make your own D&D dungeon/building maps? Then yeah, Dungeon Draft may be the right tool for you.
I typically get my maps from 2minutetabletop because I don't have time to do my own cartography.
For world maps I use Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator.
But that's what works for me.
100% yay
Recently joined a D&D club at my school and now I'm hooked. It's due to my love for fantasy and roleplaying, honestly. I'm trying to figure out a character sheet for my upcoming dragonborn character, Vermillion! Wish me luck :)
Nice! And what an awesome name!
new to dnd but I've watched a few of campaigns and want to get into it. i have a character sheet ready (their name is raylin earnheart, rouge assassin) and im hoping to get started soon ^^
Good luck bud! That sounds like a cool first character!
much thank

My brothers older friend is going to be the dm of a new campaign with some friends of mine. Most have played before except for me. This is the first charcter I have made. I am open to thoughts and suggestions.
Looks good! I think you can prepare a few more spells, though.
Might want to double-check your starting equipment, too. You’d normally have a lot more than just two items.
You have grappler but at the current look over, I don't see much to help with it. I'd almost recommend a different feat
Grappler is the only free feat you get on DnD beyond
But yes it's terrible and nobody should use it
Really? I thought there was more
Svirfneblin Magic and Firearm Specialist
But you need to be a Deep Gnome for the first, and need Critical Role Content enabled for the second.
Well, heck.
When you want to try and join a game session again with a new character for the first time again; but, your only pair of earbuds just perished a day ago. More time to work on the character, I guess TwT

Yea I’m down
Morning all. To reply to messages in looking for players is the correct procedure to DM the poster noting your interest in their game? if so, and this might be just isolated to me, I get error message explaining the recipient only accepts messages from "friends" or those on a shared server?
@ruby lava that means the poster either has forgot to allow private messages from shared servers, or possibly has you blocked for whatever reason
I'm personally looking for a DM so I could get to play too

Posting in some of those channels requires you to post in a given format (check pinned messages)
I posted in #750812887697588356 already, gotta wait 6 more days until I can do so again
And Idk how to post on the r/lfg subreddit
Posting on reddit requires a reddit account. I wouldn't worry too much about reddit.
You can also try looking for games via Facebook, your local hobby and comic book shops, other RPG game-oriented websites, etc.
The latter isn't an option because I live in rural Finland, where those don't exist
So I guess I have to hope the Facebook group accepts me
Hello group new here and semi new to D&D.
#looking-for-community Not seeing this channel. Anything special to go to it?
select roles first
Looking for a game TODAY
Head to #880965682462875679 first to get either the DM or Player role (or both).
Ive got this character idea in mind but idk how to make it work. The character creation screen confuses me
What part are you stuck at?
Im new to the whole character creating thing so idk what certain things do to the character or how to make what I want happen. Was wondering if someone was free to take me through the steps of it all and put it in detail because videos dont work for me.
I'd suggest asking in #character-discussion. The more information you can provide up-front about what you're going for, the more they can help.
Hi all, new dm here and player all together, me and my friends want to play d&d , we purchased the starter box set but nothing in going in, is there a introduction video for how to play d&d
We suggest people read through this first https://www.dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd
Then maybe looking on youtube for a video if you need further clarification, if you have specific questions though I'm sure the fine folk here will help answer what they can
Thank you
Which thread should I post to if I had questions about strategies I could use or just wanting general advice
#dnd-discussion is good for general gameplay questions, #character-discussion would be best for questions more specifically about creating and leveling up characters
Thank you!
Just keep in mind that you will often see debates/arguments about the "best" way to play the game or build a character. Ultimately what's "best" is what's most fun for you and your group. That doesn't mean you won't find some good advice, but remember to put it in the proper perspective.
Not sure if this is the appropriate place to say hello, but Hello. Played AD&D years ago. New to 5e but have the three main books (Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, DM Guide). Looking forward to chatting with and meeting other D&D 5e players.
Welcome! I also got started in the days of AD&D

Hello, I'm 19, Italian and wanna get into D&D, made a character on the online platform but have yet to find anyone to... well, actually play with and get practice. I also can't help but seeing how there's like 50 thousand sourcebooks that all cost 30$ each that I guess unlock new things for me to use on the Online Platform, but I have no idea which one I should buy, if any.
So yeah, two problems, no people to play with and no idea where to start
To find a game, check out the channels listed right above your post. ☝🏻
And yeah, most of the sourcebooks unlock new character options. Which one is "best" depends on what kind of options you're looking for.
But I'd say the top four bang-for-your-buck purchases for character options are:
- The Player's Handbook
- Xanathar's Guide to Everything
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse
You can also buy content individually, if there's a specific race or subclass (or whatever else) you want. Anything you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
If you open up a book in the marketplace, like the PHB, you can see exactly what's inside.

Hello! Just created my first D&D character, a halfling artificer, for a campaign with my friends! Hopefully I’ll be learning fast the rules and the spells 😅
Just made my first character, does anyone have a campaign I could join, I would like it to be a relatively new campaign but anything would work, have a good day

Oh ok thanks mate appreciate it
hey yall, I'm rather new to DnD and I would like to setup my own campaign, but I've got no experience doing anything like that. I have a rough start and a ton of ideas, but I would like to sit down with someone and just talk. go over what's needed, what's recommended, etc etc. and hopefully maybe get a roadmap and a better idea. if you would be interested in helping me out feel free to shoot me a DM or just @ me in here. thanks guys!
