For now, I think that I will go with Silvanus, god of wild nature.
I picked that one for my druid character
We have #character-discussion for just that
thanks I'll move it - still finding my way around
No worries, I recommend you check out #880965682462875679 to find out where everything is
thanks
A pleasure
I have a question.what do I do if no one responds to my message in #750812887697588356
You could try a more proactive approach and look through the posts in #looking-for-players instead. If you see a game you're interested in, you can reach out to them.
Thank you

Good day everyone. Ive not played D&D since highschool in the early 80s,. Have been collecting a nice sized collection of 3.5 books. Im hoping to get into some one shots to get me back up to snuff. In hopes to DM a real table top game in my small town.
Ah, well
this server is for DNDBeyond, which is a toolset for 5e.
Welcome! Just as a heads-up, DnDBeyond only supports 5th Edition D&D.
Not here - you may want to check out the official D&D Discord
back to my search. Hope I find a group before I get to old to type. haha
but thanks.
Good luck! Hope you can find a good group to play with!
Thanks. No one hopes more then myself. hehe
Im on a discord for the city a few hours away. But not a lot there want more then table top.
Oh well. thanks for your kindness in response. Not to common these days. Have a great weekend.
Thanks! Same to you!
Hello everyone :3 ! I am new to d&d and have very less idea about how its played, so it would be really helpful if anyone could help me get to know more about it and tell me how to play it. And also let me know where I can play it as a beginner !
Welcome! There's some links in the pinned messages that will get you caught up on the basics, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Once you're ready, we've got a few channels to help you find a game to join. Should be pretty easy to find some beginner-friendly options there.

Heyyy y’all, I just started getting into it and all about two weeks ago
Welcome!
Hey everyone just made my first ever character and it’s a Artificer Artillerist
Hello
G'day all
Can you say any one word command with the command spell?
as long as it can be reasonably interpreted as a command and acted upon.
Can't give the command to "Fly" if someone can't fly, for example.
The spell description says the target doesn't obey commands that are directly harmful to it either
Ahh. this will be my home for the next month
Hello

Hey so what would you say is your formula for story crafting if you have one? Like do you have a general principle for how you design a setting? How long does it take you typically? Do you consider yourself successful considering the takeaway from your players?
is there a specific thread for beginners to find one shots with experienced DMs to learn the game?

advice, read the players handbook. also if you are confused about any rules this is the channel to ask, as well as #dnd-rules
Slight correction above; you don't need to read the players handbook (and certainly not cover to cover)
The Basic Rules cover everything (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) and you don't need to read it in its entirety. But checking out the sections on stuff like how to make a character, how combat works, and how to use ability scores is a good start

Hello!
Hi
Hello
Hi everyone, I'm a long-time fantasy geek and thoroughly experienced WoW/Runescape/Ultima Online vet. I've been interested in D&D for a LOOOOONG time and I think I'm finally ready to bridge the gap.. I have a toddler's grasp of how the game is played and where to start, but because I'm trying to find a group to play with online (I don't have high hopes of finding any in-person groups in my area) I'm sincerely overwhelmed by trying to understand the gist of how that works. I'm looking into forums and LFG subs only to find people talking about stuff like 5e, roll20, opt-ins.. and that's not even touching on trying to figure out how to play. (I figure a noob-friendly session would be a good solution for this.)
Is there anyone here that wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction? I want to sink my teeth into understanding how to play, and also how to find a group, as efficiently as possible. Spare me 5 minutes and explain things to me like I'm 5, or just say "go get the handbook you scrub", I'd be grateful for any and all advice. 🙂
Maybe there's a handy list of things that I should study up on before even trying to think of character creation/finding a group? Like I said, any advice welcome. Thanks in advance!
5e is shorthand for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition — the current version of the game.
Roll20 is a website.
And opt-in, at least in terms of our game channels here, is where you’d specify whether you’d like to be contacted with invites to paid game sessions.
There's a bunch of pinned links in this channel. Basic rules cover the comprehensive basics, such as how combat goes along, how spells work, ETC.
If you have any specific questions during/after reading, it'll be much easier to get answers for something specific like how does a turn work rather than something as broad as 'how do i play'.
The links cover basic rules, a walkthrough, the starting stuff to get in the know
Thank you very much! I didn't even know paid game sessions existed. Interesting. I appreciate the info
Thanks for the tip. I've also been browsing the D&DBeyond website because their beginner's guide is pretty useful. I'll do some digging on my own and I'll be sure to come back with any specific questions I have. Thanks a lot :)
Hi! I'm Neo, and I just started getting into D&D. the extent of my knowledge is Critical Role and Dimension 20 and I want to get a group of chill people to play with. I'm actually planning my own Greek Homebrew game based off of what I've learned, but I feel like I'm out of my depth and might need some advice. I'm also open to trying some other peoples campaigns or one-shots since I've never sat down and actually finished a whole game of D&D (Usually my friends lose interest or our schedules conflict). If anyone would like to dm me or invite me to a group I'd be delighted!
Good place to start are the links pinned in this channel
Then, if you want to find a one-shot, check out our game finding channels

Thanks! i will definitely check that out! I cant help but feel like my story and monsters are surface-level so hopefully this helps a bit.
Hey everyone. This past weekend I played my first game of D&D with some friends. IT WAS SO FUN! I was the DM and we all just had a blast. I've been wanting to play D&D for many years but never got around to it; I've loved the D&D universe for years thru the videogames, books, and the 80s cartoon. I've also been watching many D&D YouTubers who talk about playing the game, how-to's, etc., so I've been getting a good grasp on running the game along with the core rulebooks; but I've yet to watch to anyone actually play the game because I wanted to wait until I've experienced it first-hand. We have our second session this weekend and I'm beyond excited. I'm just running the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign, like many beginners, and my players are about halfway thru part two. Just wanted to share that with you all!
question how do we do online dnd for lost mine of phandelver?
You can access the book here for free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
And this article has some good tips for playing online in general:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Hi
i really wanna play dnd beyond but there is nobody online
@void mango is my username u can add me or we can talk here
Most of us don't actually play D&D on this server (although there are channels for that). I do recommend looking at the #looking for channels (see #dnd-newcomers message for a list of these channels). #looking-for-players is DM's looking for players for their games.
Just direct message people who post there for a game that works for your schedule and preferences.
And be patient - putting together a group of players and scheduling game sessions can be challenging.
kk
As a relatively new D&D player who may eventually like to try my hand at DMing, is it considered meta-gaming to read the DM’s Guide? Not looking up specific things for the campaign I’m playing but just to understand the game fuller.
nope.
just remember that quite a few things in the DMG are still optional, and shouldn't be used without DM permission: but a lot of DMs haven't even READ the DMG (hell, I'm still surprised when I find some of the new Actions to take in combat cause I haven't read it as much as I should)
@fluid tartan Not in the slightest, I personally encourage people to read the DMG, as it can be helpful to alot of players
okay so im doing my first campaign soon and its online so i was planning on using roll20 but tbh i dont trust my players can i view their dnd beyond character profiles and see it edited so i can keep an eye on their health and stuff?
or should i just keep notes on how many hit points they have left?
or would it make sense for them to link their accounts to the avrae bot and use that? because that keeps track of your hp doesnt it?
Do you have access to the encounters feature in dnbeyond? That can track HP/Initiative, and you can use beyond20 addon to link to roll20, that is what the DM in my game uses does.
Dont even need the addon if you keep map in roll20 and everything else in dndbeyond
This is more #dm-discussion territory as this channel is for the basics
Hi, I'm hoping I can learn how to play dnd
Welcome! There’s a bunch of link here in the pinned messages that can get you started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
I've played before but I didn't follow all the rules and it's been awhile, is there anyway I can join a game or start a game with an experienced gm with a couple of other newcomers?

Hi there, I. Quite new and last time might not have made this clear I understand the rules to a certain extent but I'm still not to sure about the cosmology could someone explain I would appreciate it thanks
As has been mentioned before, there is no one fixed cosmology
It depends on what setting you're playing in
If you're not playing in an official setting, you can make your own cosmology
Oh, I mean like with published adventures
Depends on the adventure, but generally speaking the cosmology doesn't figure heavily into them and if it does, it'll be explained in the adventure
Okay l, thanks again.
so the planes of existence in the Forgotten Realms are called The Planar Wheel Cosmology.
there is the material plane (basically earth)
the material plane's echoes (delightful-feywild, dreadful-shadowfell)
surrounding this is the Ethereal Plane (ghosts and the like)
the Elemental planes surround this (earth, water, air, and fire)
the Elemental Chaos surrounds this (every element interact nonsensically)
then beyond that begins the Outer Planes, the largest group of planes.
permeating the space between outer planes is the Astral Plane, also called the Astral Sea (a kind of magical space)
the Outer Planes proper all represent different ideas, usually connected to an associated alignment.
for example, Lawful Evil would be the Nine Hells of Baator, the Plane where Devils originate. Neutral Good would be represented by Elysium, which is a kind of heaven.
beyond those lies the Positive Energy and Negative Energy Planes, these are incredibly inhospitable due to them being incredibly intense in either direction.
this is very poorly organized, my apologies.
This is all covered in the DMG:
As described in the Player’s Handbook, the assumed D&D cosmology includes more than two dozen planes. For your campaign, you decide what planes to include, inspired by the standard planes, drawn from Earth’s myths, or created by your own imagination.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-a-multiverse#PuttingthePlanesTogether
It goes on to describe the One Wheel mentioned above, and a dozen other options.
I’d suggest heading over to #dm-discussion if you’d like to inquire further.

I've remeber what I forgot to ask yesterday I understand there are different worlds or planets if you will do all the other planets exist in the material plane?
So basically does that mean all the planets are I'm the material plane? And do therse planets get used other than toril?
Again, it depends on your specific campaign setting, but if you want to travel between different worlds/planets, I’d suggest looking at next week’s release of Spelljammer.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/spelljammer-adventures-in-space
(I’d suggest asking in #dm-discussion if you want a more in-depth discussion on this topic.)
Is it true that all the planets are in the realmspace?
No, only the worlds of thei forgotten realms
Hence realmspace
And as Spam said, this isn't really newcomer chat so best taken to #dm-discussion
Oh okay thank you
hi, im new and looking for a server, can anyone send a friend request to me and add me to a server, can i request that there be some new people as well so im not the only one? i bought the starter set today and im going to get it tomorrow, Thanks.

Hi
Howdy
New to the digital world of DnD. Started in 85 must familiar with the 83' sets. Would it be possible tofind a game using these rules or would I be better off getting current?
There are groups that use legacy rules - but if you want to stack the deck in your favour when it comes to finding a group, switching to the current version is probably your best bet. ✌️
Here on this server, at least, it’s all fifth edition.
Simply because that’s the edition supported by D&D Beyond.

You can get started with the Basic Rules for free right here:

Hello all. New to dnd in general and only have a bit of experience doing a small campaign with a couple friends, but still very inexperienced
Welcome!
Hello! So I just finished making my dnd character sheet, what do I do next?
You can show it off in #character-discussion if you want some feedback.
Hey guys. I’m new to dnd sort of I’ve played a couple of one shots with some friends so I know a little but not very much.
Welcome! There's some helpful starter links in the pinned messages here if you want to learn more, or if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
Love the name
Thanks
Don’t mention it
Is there anyway to roll a tool check (e.g. thieves tool) directly from the item on the character sheet? or do you just make a regular dex check and add proficiency as needed manually?
You can add it as a custom skill if you want a rollable box for it.
Just click on the little gear icon there where it says Skills.
It’s at the bottom of the skills section on desktop.
Hello all. I am new to D&D and started some campaigns with friends. So far I kinda have figured things but all a learning curve still
Hello everyone im a newcomer into dnd and i was wondering what are the basic things i should learn going into dnd, i started reading a bit of the basic rules book on ddb but wanted to ask what are the main things i should really look out for if any
Edit: i have also been listening to a pod cast called The Roaring Trainers so i have a idea of what a game would kinda be like
what does the customize your origin thingy when you build a character do ?Does it affect you character?
If you have access to Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, you can find the full rules for that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/character-options#CustomizingYourOrigin
But in short, it gives you additional options to better customize a race's Ability Score Increase, languages, or proficiencies.
Hi everyone I'm new and would very much appreciate any help! 😁
Hi and welcome
Best place to start is the pinned links in this channel; lots of useful info there
Thank you

i am new to dnd and currently playing with some friends, but as someone who is older, i can see why my friends kept trying to get me to play. this is pretty fun way to spend some time with friends
Saaap been awhile wanna get back into the game
any groups looking for an experienced player that played 1st to 3.5 editions
2nd edition sucked
gasp heresy! ...nah, jk. It was real rough, but I do miss some stuff from there.
anyway, use the looking channels (linked up above) to find a group
Thanks Neut
mhm o7
ello
hi uhhhhhh
i want to create a character sheet :|
is there somebody free to assist me :o?
sure
:D
should i pick my class first do decide which race could be fitting to it?
or vice versa :o?
Pretty much any race can be any class
Personally I do the race last, because I like to build my characters from the mechanics up and let that define how I'm going to play the character
But if you've got a strong vibe like showlin monk or smth, obviously the race can be super important to getting it right
Personal fave
That do be what it be for
oooh
so that is a cool race to pick
imma note that
wow their are different elements
For a draconic soul sorcerer? probably the best race you can get without paying money for it
ah ok then
Plus, you know, then you're a lil devil dragon person
Like you get points for style if nothing else
oooooh
style is charisma thingy right?
imma skip red, gold and brass dragon
cuz fire is overrated :/
charisma is more your force of will, or how well you can get across what you want to say
:o
also
can ya gimme the different
between wisdom and inteliggent?
the charisma skills are: deception, persuasion, intimidation and performance
idk what institution meant
intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad
intelligence is how well you can recall details about arcane lore, or the history of the world where wisdom is more how attuned to the world and people around you you are
constitution is your stamina
ah i see that meme e.e
yeah welcome to where all the memes come from
oh.
troll
so for a sorcerer build
which stat should i value more?
i think sorcerer get + in charisma?
and constituition or something
you want as much charisma as possible
wait isnt that a b a r d
next two most important are constitution and dexterity
ah
you want your charisma towards the 20, for it is the stat you use to cast your spells
you are gonna be shook when you find out about paladins
for a sorcerer dexerity and constitution are important as well, but not as important as your charisma
so im low on inteligent and wisdom ah.
thought being a spellcaster have to be smart
O.o
i mean those are both good, but you're a charisma caster
oh
int casters are wizards, wisdom casters are clerics and druids
i thought sorcerer was also a powerful spellcaster like wizard-
yes
spellcasters all use different stats to cast their spells, bards, warlocks, paladins and sorcerers use charisma, wizards and artificers use intelligence and druids, clerics and rangers use wisdom
i assume streth is super low cuz i dont need it
they are, but it is a different flavour of spellcaster
strength should be your lowest stat
paladin also spellcaster?
yes
yes, paladin and rangers also get spells, however, way less spells then any other caster
ah that make sense
so which dragon bloodline should i be?(i dont liek the fire ones)
it really doesn't matter
you could look at white or silver
just go with whatever you think is coolest
i liek poison
a c i d?
correct, that is connected to spells like cone of cold
that would be the black dragon origin, or the green dragon origin
ah so spell with same draconic blood get boosted in power?
at lvl 6
uhhh imma go with green one then
you gain a few benefits to casting spells with the same damage type as your draconic origin
ah
ok i have done the sorcerer
should i go straight into ability
or doing spells first?
Starting at 6th level, when you cast a spell that deals damage of the type associated with your draconic ancestry, you can add your Charisma modifier to one damage roll of that spell. At the same time, you can spend 1 sorcery point to gain resistance to that damage type for 1 hour.
ah ok thank you
i have to learn poison spray right?
you should do you abilities first, when you have a bit of an idea how your stats look you can determine what spells to pick
ah ok then
oo
you can also take other spells that deal poison damage, you are not limited to only that spell
this seems like a conversation for #character-discussion, doesn't it?
i picked standard arry thingy
idk i just got here and ppl tell me to chat here for advice
so my score is uh
strentgh 8
inteligent 10
wisdom 12(idk which one needed more)
constitution 13
dexterity 14(dexter mean im likely less going to die right?)
charisma 15
cuz you guys said i should max out charisma
that is a good spread for a sorcerer
ah ok then
yeah it's about right
nice.
little bit of buffing with racial stats and you're good
dexterity increases your armour class, with your subclass it will be 15 meaning you will be hit less
o cool
that epic
uhh so there other modifiers
should i be worry bout them?
your constitution dicates how many hits you can take before you go unconcious, but this too is boosted a little with your subclass
or hop to the next part?
go over to the class part now, and pick your spells
ah.
not just stamina then
alright
im there now
which spell is recommended?
well, it is most commonly used for things like holding your breath and how many hit points you have so it's your stamina/endurance
hold your breath?
like underwater?
what is cantrip?
starter spell?
support spell?
I'd recommend taking something like: ice knife, magic missile and shield for leveled spells and then take prestidigitation/minor illusion, fire bolt and chill touch
oh ok
cantrips are the spells you can cast an unlimited amount of times per day
ah ok
so no poison spray or acid or anything?
i picked the poison dragon, hope that wont give me a disadvantage
chromatic orb can be picked or swapped in later to get poison damage
It literally won't matter until lvl 6
but for now you want the spells that do a good amount of damage and can keep you alive for longer
And by then you have transmuted spells and you can do poison damage no matter what you're casting
oh ok
this is very true as well, always forget about that meta magic option
It's surprisingly clutch
darkest man
i think uh
i can only pick between shield, missle and ice knife
not all 3
sorry, used to wizards, do you have two or three options?
2
then drop magic missile, it is an automatic hit spell but the damage it deals is lacking when compared to ice knife
I'm a little too used to order of scribes
all of your suggestion except magic missile
alright, that should cover your class, spells and stats or am I mistaken?
meta magic? wut that o.o
yes
imma head to race cuz marrow said i should pick tiefling
it is an ability that lets you empower spells in a variety of ways, however, those are choices you have to make from level 3 and upwards
:o
nah, only order of scribes
ah ok
o cool hellish resistence
now i resist both poison and fire
tiefling, half elf and human all work here
and also darkvision
mhm
tiefling is just really good for draconic bloodline in particular
hmmmm
Mostly because of the everything
:o
oh COOL
tiefling get my charisma up by 2 point
charisma pretty high already tho,idk if that matter
it grants some spells, which is in my opinion the best value the entire race has for sorcerers

i get my inteliegence increase by 1
yes, the higher your charisma the harder it is to resist your spells and the easier you can hit others with spells if they require a spell attack
that cool
The game assumes you start with at least 16 in your main stat
damn i thought that was dexterity and charisma just overworld seduction
16/17, that is where you would start in most cases
mhm
that mean i have to bump up lvl right?
im only lv 1 now
huh
there is a blue mark on class
at levels 4, 8, 12, 16 and 19 you gain ability score increases, but for now keep you sheet at level 1 because not all DMs will start at a higher level
proficienece?
that seem bout right
Lots of DMs do start at lvl 3
the skills you are better at, see it as your specialities as an adventurer
ah
well im a tiefling
so probably not intimidation
well
that is for you to decide, a tiefling can be as intimidating as a half orc
why not? you already look a bit scary to some people probably
but any race can look nice or intimidating
that
does be helpful
I mean I think the literal devil boy covered in scales and growling at me in draconic probably has an advantage to intimidation
ye seem bout right
is Arcana and Persuation ok?
high charisma gotta need some persuation
like, If I played a halfling with Intimidation prof, I could RP them having this really mean grimace that would unsettle people, as an example
o ok
Persuasion is a good skill to have, especially for a high CHA character
o ok then it my pick then
and Arcana is a good skill to have for a spell caster, since its required to make spell scrolls
Maybe halflings are rare in the setting so nobody quite knows what they are, and everyone is really afraid of saying something offensive
you also get two proficiences from your background, dont forget about that
when i think of draconic bloodline i was thinking of dragoborn race Xp
:o
no reason you can't do that
also
how much matter is backstory and origin?
i felt like that just seem like some fancy costumization
rather than actual perk 🤔
anyone can be draconic bloodline. It might not even be more common amongst dragonborn than with others
@-@
your backstory and origin stuff is what makes your character...well a character. but it doesnt have any direct mechanical benefits
Reminds me of my kobold who was convinced he was a dragon because he was the only draconic sorcerer in his tribe. Everyone else just couldn't see how great he was
your background, which might be influenced by your backstory, does
ah ok
kobold seem like a lizarddude
that totally dragonborn
heck, dragonborn dont even have wing :|
kobolds are very small dragonkin. they live ususally in large underground caves. they often end up serving a dragon, sometimes voluntary, sometimes not
idk why everytime i heard warlock i thought of a sage even tho it have WAR in the name
well
that seem like a interesting backstory
the war in warlock doesnt have any relation to the armed conflicts
especially if in the party have a dragonborn
w a i t w u t
W A I T W U T
warlocks gain power from eldritch powers
Old English wærloga "traitor, liar, enemy, devil,
making a warlock being a folk hero be like
warlocks get their magic not vial study or bloodline or divine blessing. They make some sort of pact with a powerful being that grants them the power and knowlege they have
that said, a warlock can totally be good
so they sell their souls to the devil
very kool
very possible, a warlock can recieve power from a celestial being and thus be a folk hero
thats one option
you can play a genasi from the genie subclass who just gets their powers from their mum
wait sorcerer dont earn their power from hardwork?
that pretty shucks
a celestial warlock could have a unicorn as a patron, maybe an Archfey Warlock has made a deal with a Fairy Queen that is not about their soul but maybe some sort of favor to be paid later
that just sound like draco malfoy from harry potter now
sorcerers still need to learn to control their powers, but they have them inherently
this backstory look like something a fanservice would do
funni luck
is custom background better or just pick a one that already had?
just pick one
like, a divine soul sorcerer might be born at the right time so they just have holy powers. A wild magic sorcerer might have wandered into a high magic zone for to long and now weird things happen
imma pick soldier
noble seem too fancy
sage too lawful good
sound boring
uh gaming set-
dice i guess
sage can totally be evil
think a necromancer who has access to the libraries of a long forgotten tomb holding secrets of the arcane
o h.
or just neutral. all knowledge is good knowledge etc
i just random some characteristic and it already clash with eachother
my ppl are matter but i obey the law-
a background is as evil you make it
then you will go as far as the law will allow to help your people
mhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
ah ok
can't help your people if you are in jail after all
you guys understand alot about rpg and dungeons :o
ye that seem legit now
darkest is dungeon master-
well that explain it
yeah, have started playing as a DM and been one until now
oOoOOo
imma pick chaotic neutral so the charistic clash as much as possible
lawful is overrated
you too will understand this game in a while, it takes a bit of time but it is not too difficult
ah ok
the store seem have lot of book
hope this game not too complicated
its not trivial but there are a decent amount of more complicated games out there.
most books are setting books or adventures, it is not that difficult to understand
mhmmm
DnD 5e is something of a middle ground when it comes to complexity imo
it certainly is not monopoly
that hopefully will help me
monopoly online pretty easy 😂
easy to learn
and also losing 😐
you can go pretty far with the basic rules only and the only book I would recommend to a player immediately is the player's handbook
i m a k i d
there are a lot of extension books with more races, subclasses etc but thats for later
i got no moni :|
yeah then stick to basic rules for now
the basic rules are free
if you like the game you can ask for the PHB for birthday/xmas
:o o ok
as much as i want that
i live in asia
that not gonna happen at the slightest
w e d o nt e v e n c e l e b r a t e x m a s h e r e
iirc it's 30 bucks for the PHB
30 BUCKS?
o god that in my country gonna buy enough food for me to sustain 4 months
that so many bucks
y so expensive-
oof, well then I suggest to stick with the free basic rules for now
Y E S
also i gotta ask about lifestyle
it have SP and GP thingy
does it do anything?
lifestyle is an estimation on what your character would usually spend when staying in a city
SP and GP are silver pieces and gold pieces, it is how much you need to pay to keep living that way for a week
and yeah silver pieces and gold pieces (and bronze) are the common currency in dnd
comfortable*
coins seem pretty reasonable in medieval theme game
yeah they are basically coins but dont differentiate between different kingdoms' name for their currencies
do you have any idea how much gold coins actually weigh
because in the end, gold is gold
i dont actually know ;-;
my country doesnt use coin
if ya talkin in game
i think i turn off coin weight
each set of 50 coins weighs 1 lbs, no matter what currency
ah
imma moving to equipment if ya guy talkin about coins then
too lazy doing look costumization
coin or equipment is better?
i feel liek equipment would be better?
probably
ah ok then
money is just like, if your DM is giving you a shopping list before you start
ah.
light crossbow or simple weapon.
my spell is ranged right?
so i geuss i take simple weapons?
yes
proud of u
hopefully it not suck
1d4 slashing iirc
sickles are pretty bad, ngl
oh
but you probably wont use it much as a sorcerer
yeah
i heard from a video wizard die of 1d4 dmg or something
you're a sorcerer
thats just a meme
that's a bad meme
:o
does i encounter only monster in adventure or also other classes?
monsters
typically, NPCs and monsters dont have classes
alrighty then
but some NPCs can have similar abilities
companenet pouch or arcane focus
mhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
counterspell wil work then.
a focus is better 90% of the time
I would have said the pouch is better until you get a focus with bonuses
is the options change anythings?
or purely costumization?
but pouch or focus rarely matters
costumization really
ah ok
both of ya guys have different option
idk what to choose then
what matter the most in the equipment part?
well yeah, but I feel it is better to know what they do until you get one with a bonus because they have a slight difference with the rules iirc
or they mostly just support
and spell matter more?
hmmm so focus it is
arcane seem similar to arcana
so both a pouch and a focus basically replace some of the material components of your spells, like bat poop for fireball
w u t
ya need material to cast spell now ey?
the difference is that a pouch theoretically does this by holding all the components for you and the focus replaces them entirely.
yeah all spells have spell components
A C K
most spells have a verbal component, magic words etc
wait
so that mean using focus make me no need to worries about componenets?
many spells have somatic components, hand gestures etc
that alot
a good chuck of spells have material components, like twigs, bat poop, or sometimes costly stuff like diamonds
mhmmmmmmmmm
the verbal and somatic components arent specified in game. you can make them up basically
Arcane focus
it really doesnt matter usually
pick what you think is cooler, casting through a wand or staff or crystal or having a pouch with all the stuff you need
I mean it's hitting for d8 unarmed vs using a hammer. Yeah, it's the same damage, but you can't lose your hands
Bias alerted 😂
In theory you can run out of components, but I've never seen it come up
so imma picking focus then
I do enjoy seeing people use actual material components tho. I think it adds good flavour
ooOooO
dungeon pack or exploere pack?
they both have complex stuff
idk which would be better
well there is one thing with the focus. if you hold it in one hand and your sickle in the other, then you might occasionally run into problems with your hand gestures
oh
which one would a soldier have
or rather your character
probably dungeon pack for more armed
tho i felt like in the pack have a crowbar and hammer
it doesnt matter so much which is better. just think on what your character would be carrying
seem bit abundant
cuz i have a simple weapon+2 dagger
you can throw daggers in a pinch
oh
and the crowbar + hammer are more tools than weapons
ah.
dugeon pack then
too much decision for a day XP
mhm
SOLDIER STARTER PACK?
it also have that?
yeah
a dagger or a banner or a broken blade
is 3 dagger better than 2+1 broken blade/banner?
its just for RP. I usually take the dagger if I'm playing a soldier
you picked the dice proficiency earlier, right?
yes?
then the bone dice would make the most sense, imo
ok oke
hey there is the other before i finish
current inventory
currency
add items and other possesion
Should i add any of them?
or ignore them?
you should have some from you background. like a few GP
thats what you got right now, correct?
no the 2 GP for living is not what you have, its what you typically spend. what does your background/class give you?
right, then thats what you have
the thing is, a DM can always decide to give you more stuff or do starting gear completely different.
so you are making your first character I would recommended just sticking to the book for now, and adjust if needed once you are in an actual game
or just write 0 and the equipment will added that acutall-
ah ok then
the currency should be added when you click "add starting equipment"
ah ok then
here the finish character sheet
gimme feedback iguess
very thank you guys
for helping me
Thx you omegan,darkest and marrow
you're welcome
yeah, though it looks like you have forgotten to actually add the inventory you selected?
but no problem, glad to help
I T H I N K SO
in the weapons i only fine cross bow light and quarter staff
i think i forgot to add it
how do add :o?
yey
yey x2 :D
you can go back to the builder by selecting the hammer and anvil symbol
oh ok
there should be a button while you are in your inventory screen, or is it everything from the background?
be sure to click "add starting equipment" after you made your selections
its a blue button
ah i see
i think it added now
thx you ^^
also
is it necessary to wield my sickle?
the other 3 dagger is also wieldable
yeah
what do you mean?
i click on a attack dmg
daggers and sickles do 1d4 damage. 1d4 means a four sided dice
and it rolled out a dice
oh 1d4 mean dice 4 sided-
i thought it 4 dmg-
haha no
WELL NOW I CAN SEE SICKLE IS STUPIDLY SUCK ; - ;
still gonna use it tho
the basic die is a d20, aka a 20 sided dice. you use it for most things, like attacking, making skill checks and saving throws.
My soulknife does 1d4 damage and I can hit for over 100 in a single round
weapons all have different dice for damage
w u h
skill check-
SAVING THROW?
YE IM TOTALLY UNDERSATNDING them
like a dagger does 1d4, a shortsword does 1d6, a rapier does 1d8 etc
at this point, its time to get into the basic rules
if you look at the links pinned to this channel, you see a link to them
:o
oh ok thank you very much
This matters if you're using two at once
what light means for weapons is described there too
ah ok thx
that sound like sickle a legit 1d8 weapon then 😐
soft core gambling with improv and basic maths really XD
xP
like, we gladly answer your questions but if you havent read the rules at all, we would be basically be here for days explaining every single rule.
ah ok thx
Gambling with the highest possible stakes: your friends happiness
its far easier for you to read them, and then ask questions after
the first step in the rules is basic character sheet
the 2nd step is the games
so imma read them
thx you guys alot again

welcome emmy
Hey everybody. I'm pretty new to DnD, having just had an intro game last week. I want to join in on a local game, but I think I need to get a character built first. I figured I would play a Goliath Barbarian. I've been going through the steps on DnD Beyond (after purchasing the Player Bundle), and currently I'm at a point of selecting a language. I'd like to choose "giant" as a language since it seems to fit with my race, but I don't see it as an option... do I need to buy a certain source book or something to have that language?
If you’re using the legacy Goliath, they learn Giant already.
is there a non-legacy goliath?
Yeah. Those ones get Common and one language of their choice.
What source book has the non-legacy one?
Monsters of the Multiverse
Hmmm ok I guess I'll pick that one up
why not use the legacy one you already have?
the differences are minimal you can ask your DM if its an issue
Either way, though, there’s nothing you need to buy to learn Giant. If it’s not showing as an option, that’s generally because you already learned it somewhere else.
Same for proficiencies, like Skills.
ok that makes sense
Are there many level 1 games? I don't see many on Adventurer's pub . I'm new to 5th editions from back in the D&D /AD&D Days, Do people usually just create characters at the level of the game or use characters built up by adventures. I'd rather not ruin an adventure by stepping in to a completely new rule system at higher level with a newb character/player.
Oh and Omegon, I respect your patience
I mean I guess it depends on the campaign, I’ve done both dependent on the dm, so probably best to ask them, although new characters will probably be accepted as long as they’re the same level as the other characters and module
I think Phandelver starts off at level 1
But beyond that I’m not overly certain
I hope that’s what you meant
Hello all, Brand new to D&D, just made my first character on site.
What did you roll up?
I don't understand the question...
they just asked you what you made
The phrase oft-used is rolling a character, since ability scores are incredibly important, and rolled stats is a classic staple
oh, no experience with that, back in the day we actually had to roll dice to make a character, 3 rolls of the standard 6 sided die, It was referred to as rolling up a character
sorry, 3d6 for each stat
and the dice decided what kind of character class would fit you best, they have kind of laxed the rules for character creation thses days
unless you have a compliant Dm
most people want to play a certain race/class combo, probably better to let the make what they want to play
Huh. I was just working up a halfling bard for my first game in 25 years. I know we just used to roll the stats back then, but I used the “standard” point distribution on the dndb creator to give myself high charisma.
yeah, using standard array or point buy should be easily acceptable in any game.
Hey how is everyone doing? I've never played this game but I'm very excited to check it out. Anyone have a good resource for beginners? Thanks in advance!
I'm checking out those Basic rules on dndbeyond, that seems very helpful so far
the pinned message
hey thanks
Can I wildshape only a part of my body? Like grow wings, but still have the stats of the creature I want to partially wildshape into?
No, it's all or nothing.
RAW, no, but you could flavor spells as doing that
thank god for DMs then
hi i’m new to dnd and i would like to give it a try with a friend, both of us bought the essentials kit and are excited to try this game out
welcome to the chaos.
So, I’m just going to a pick up game, a one shot, tomorrow, at a local game place. I know almost no one. I have a level one character I made, but also have the pre made sheets from the starter set. My lore is a little hazy - I played in the early 90s, and only vaguely remember the Dragonlance and Drizzt books. Any tips besides take it easy and have fun?
don't worry about lore.
that's the biggest tip I have for you.
like, know what lore is probably relevant directly to your character (which can be summarized as "how do they use their magic and study it," "what god do they worship if any," and where did they come from?)
I’m not too worried. Those are pretty much the only things I was thinking of - where does he come from and what are a few basic motivations.
Hi a few tips
1.do not try to use your own books
2.unless you are in a campaign put all charicters to level 20
3. Have fun
I'm not sure 1 or 2 are great advice
2 certainly seems like it might make things overwhelming
Yeah, those seem like bad advice if I am honest
Hi everyone, looking for some advice/suggestions. In a new campaign I have recently been awarded a "-2 dagger" which apparently does 1d4 damage AND 1d6 healing on a hit. I'm not really sure how this could be used, other than playing the odds and hoping for the best - but I'd like to have some creative ideas for it, or find fun ways of incorporating it into story and roleplay
OK thanks, sorry,, I'll try that
why is my hexblade warlocks longsword, which i have attributed as a Hex Weapon, have a grayed out 1d10+4 below the original 1d8+4?
If I don't bind to the weapon every day, will it only do 1d8? and if I bind to it, it does 1d10? Is that what it is?
It's a versatile weapon, meaning it can be wielded one handed for 1d8+4 damage, or two handed for 1d10+4 damage
got it, so if i'm not holding a shield for the sword and board tactic and opt to have a free hand to cast Somatic/Material component spells, It would do 1d10 damage?
yeah if your second hand is free, you can use both hands to attack for a d10 instead of a d8
simple enough, thanks!
Hello, I'm just getting into d&d. Just wondering if it's worth starting off with a necromancer or lycan character? I'm still not 100% sure on how games work, but it seems like a lot of DMs don't like hosting games with necromancers as players, and unless they are allowing the blood hunter class, there isn't really a lycan type character to play either? Closest thing being maybe a shape shifting druid? But that's not the same thing imo. Any advise here?
there is the shifter race from Monster of the multiverse book
they are partially lycan
and there is the path of the beast barbarian from tasha's
I'm here looking for a 5e group to join. I have a fair amount of experience.
I don't have tasha's. Would you be able to show that class information?
I cant show you all of it but basically, when you rage, you can transform and grow a tail, fangs or claws and attack with those
Ah

Little background: I'm completely new to dnd, and am stepping in as a DM first off. I've been researching for my party for about a month at this point.
Question: How do you decide what books you're going to allow at the table? Is it only what you already own? Or do you say you can pull from this if you can show me the references for it?
That’s entirely up to you and your group. Even if you do own a book, you might disallow it for story reasons.
I just made a CharacterSheet can anyone be kind enough to teach me how to use it in a game plox
Have you read through the free basic rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
reading im not fond of hehh hehh but ill check em out
At its core, D&D is a social collaborative game. A Dungeon Master/Game Master sets the stage, and asks players what their characters do. The players try and take actions they feel their character would take (thus the role-play aspect). The DM can then ask the players to make certain dice rolls depending on the character's actions. For instance let's say a player is playing a fighter with a longsword and they chose to attack a giant rat - the DM asks for an attack roll. The player running the fighter rolls a D20 and adds the appropriate modifiers and any bonuses. If the end result is higher than the Armor Class of the giant rat, the attack hits. The DM can then ask the player to roll damage - this time the player uses the damage dice that particular weapon or attack uses, adds any modifiers or bonuses, and gives that result to the DM. The DM then subtracts that from the giant rat's Hit Points. Similar dice rolls are made for ability checks - like when a character attempts to climb a wall or lockpick a door. And that's kind of how D&D is played.
Check out some livestream or YouTube videos of groups playing D&D to get a bit of a feel for how the game is played.
sure will be doing rn
@echo kelp as I see you are a DM aswell if you dont mind can I join your next session so I can learn Practically , obviously after watching some of the vids online ...
Sorry I'm not currently taking players for the campaign I'm currently running - but do check out #looking-for-players - that's where DMs post looking for players to play in their games.

Do be patient as coordinating a session among multiple people's schedules can take time
in North India its hard to find people , they busy being cool and stuff . . . no offence to nayone
Well I hope you can find a great group to play with!
sure do to
Got back from my first game in almost thirty years. We killed some ogres, a sorcerous half orc, and freed a saucy wizard. Our cleric was a 1452 year old dog who healed by vomiting up potions in the face of the party. Unfortunately, she was distracted and chased all projectiles, and had an alchemical jar that produced four gallons of mayonnaise a day, which she ate and threw back up, with acid, on our enemies. The player was a middle school girl. A good time was had by all.
You want #tales-from-the-table
Any good websites or software's for designing character appearances without much artist skill needed?
I use heroforge
I'll check it out, thank you for the quick response
Hey I just got into a few of my friends sessions this past week and now I'm hooked but not everyone can play and I want to play and finish my Rogue/Ranger build I started.
Can I join anyones group/session? I dont even mind making a new character, I just want to see this build flourish at its potential.

I’ve been having fun this week with ArtFlow, too. You just type in a physical description and get an AI-generated portrait.
https://artflow.ai/
You can click “Reflow” after to give it a few tweaks, too.
Oh that's pretty cool
would recommend picrews! the ais steal real art made by real artists
Image embeds are disabled by default in all but a few channels
That artflow one works pretty well. Made an image of what I figure one of my characters could look like
So I have another question related to character creation. I only have the basic rules, so not all the races are available to me on D&D Beyond, but I'd like to make a Yuan-Ti abomination. Do I have buy whatever book gives that to me, or am I able to just make my own character sheet for it?
That's not a racial option. The only yuan-ti presented for players is the Pureblood variety.
Small correction; the Yuan-ti Pureblood is a legacy option and no longer available for sale
The Yuan-ti race is available in Monster of the Multiverse
Good catch there. I guess I thought it was still called pureblood.
I'm not quite as interested in the purebloods personally. If I'm gonna play something beasty, I want it to be beasty, ya'know?
Alas, the only official players yuan-ti option is very light on the snake-ness.
For more beastly things, the Shifter (also in MOTM) can provide a much more beastly flavor.
@toxic rain You might wanna head on to #character-discussion if you wanna get more into the topic of a character you have in mind
I'm just looking for information is all, thanks
That's the place for it
Just to add to this, you can purchase individual races by themselves as well. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
The Yuan-Ti option would be in this book, specifically:

Oh awesome, thank you!

dunno if this is the right chat for this, but what classes can use the wish spell coz i want a character for a campaign that one of my friends is doing
If you look at the bottom of the spell page, it will show which classes can learn it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/wish
thanks
though in this case its incomplete. Arcana Cleric and Bards also can learn wish
Do those tags include the additions from Tasha expanded lists? I know that the avrae equivalent doesn't
It includes only the classes/subclasses for whom that spell is always on their spell list.
When it comes to Tasha's Optional Class Features, those spells are only added to the list for your character after you've gained the feature that says they are.
Essentially the same case as Arcana Cleric and Bards above.
hi all
hi I'm very new
Welcome!
yeah I haven't even played a single game yet lol
I'm just winging it
I probably shouldn't but I am
Anyone know a link I can watch to know how to play DND? I have never... Never played in my whole life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVAJrYOOtwI&t=308s&ab_channel=JoCat Funny and fast but knowledgeable
Unironically useful
He uses words my big stinky doodoo head can comprehend!
now this is a tutorial I can follow
man I really gotta come up with a background for my character
like I have like important stuff and general points and stuff but like
it's like Akira Toriyama
and also I don't wanna be like mary sue-ish
not a background a backstory
What would have triggered your character to get into adventuring?
that's one of the things I'm trying to figure out
Were they a soldier and saw some horrible monster eat some of their squad and are now out to hunt down such creatures?
I might just take the easy way out and say "oh they were bored in their small home town" but I kinda don't want to do that
Did the leader of their village con the family out of their farmland and so now the character is devoted to bringing those who abuse their power to justice?
I do have a thing where they were a former knight but the king and queen was corrupt so they along with all the other knights kulled the king and queen but I'm not really feeling it
but maybe i could work with that but idk
Maybe this tool can help spur some ideas? https://www.kassoon.com/dnd/backstory-generator/
hi
hi
that would be more of a #character-discussion topic rather than a newcomer one
Got it
Should I buy a book or two because my campaign is in Waterdeep?
If you’re looking for a setting book, Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide has information on Waterdeep and the surrounding area.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/sword-coast-adventurers-guide
You could also reference some of the adventure books set there, like Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.
Dragon Heist has a lot more info on the city than Sword Coast Adventure Guide because it is the sole setting
Yeah, SCAG covers like half a continent.
Can anybody halp me to write my character token? i already got some informations of my character
Write the token?
Ahh, make a character sheet?
yes, im brazillian so im not that good at english
Have you picked a race and class? And do you have a dm?
yes and no
Ok, you may wanna get a dm before you roll for stats, but the main things are picking a race class and background for now
Even then your dm might not allow them
oh, here in my city nobody plays dnd
there is any group here in the server where i can get in?
im a lightfoot halfling druid lvl. 1
thanks
No worries! Have fun!
ok, see you later
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask them. We are a friendly bunch :)
do monsters have an initiative like players do?
yeah, otherwise how could you tell when their turn is ^^
okay then how do i fine there number
i want to fight zombie plague spreader but dont see the +#
its the same calculation as for PCs
1d20+dex mod
some rare monsters might have a different calculation or advantage but that will be written in the statblock
id have to look what a statblock means
the yellow box with the monster info is called a statblock
where all the stats, attacks, name etc are
yeah we call that statblock
cool
When combat starts, every participant makes a Dexterity check to determine their place in the initiative order. The DM makes one roll for an entire group of identical creatures, so each member of the group acts at the same time.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
does anyone know if a wizard can have a flying monkey as a familiar?
Find Familiar lists what options you can have
Beyond that, it's down to the DM to decide
Also we have #dnd-rules for such questions
oh ok thanks, sorry for commenting in the wrong channel
S'all good, no harm no foul
(Forgive my ignorance if this isn't the right channel to post this please remove the post if you see fit)
Why hello everyone new guy here looking into getting into his first game but well I've no idea where to start other then this very Discord group... I've had a wicked fondness for the games lore and key characters been reading the books since 3.5 and so on but I've never really had a change to play let alone learn how to play until about 3 years ago when I bought the 3 main books books and some dice as advised by the members of a Facebook group however trying to learn on my own VIA reading the books and watching a few YouTube creators (Such as WASD20, Sherlock Hulmes, and Ginny Di) However though I learned a decent bit I was somewhat left a little confused and short of ready to play... Last night I had met a wonderful gent who mentored me in how to make my first character (A Wood Elf Rogue who I'd like to turn into an Arcane Trickster) And I think I nailed it for the most part I had used what he taught me and translated it onto my D&D Beyond account so hopefully I got it right... With that being said I suppose this is where I state once again that I'm looking for a group willing to take on someone so new to the game.
I can't thank you enough mate... My love for the games lore and key characters has run on long enough it's time to start rolling some dice for once.
Just did.
This might not be the right channel (or server for that matter), but I'm between campaigns right now and I'm getting 'clicky-clacky' withdrawers. Does anyone know of a place where i can search for/join a campaign?

i missed that channel ty so much!
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a campaign to run after Lost Mine of Phandelver for a new DM and new players? My group is about to finish the campaign in the next week. From what I've found, many say Curse of Strahd is good and a good challenge, Storm King's Thunder but the it requires some work, Tyranny of Dragons is also good (but the Rise of Tiamat book is out of print so you can't even finish the campaign -- we use printed books, btw), mayne Water Deep Dragon Heist. Just many options and they all sound good to me and my party lol.
Are you looking to continue with the same characters, or start fresh?
They're gonna start fresh with new characters. They're using the pre-gens right now
Rime is pretty fun
why does my character say it's at level 2 with an upgrade sign 2 but I can't do anything for the new info on 4th level attacks etc
nvm
Yo I’m so hyped to be here
Any new players wanna play in a starwars campaign
@wheat sierra please note that games should be D&D 5e based for this discord server and those that are can look for players in out #looking-for-players channel. If you post there, kindly use the template in the pinned messages of that channel. If you do not see that space make sure you visit #880965682462875679 to opt into the places you want to participate in.
Tyranny of Dragons is the combined book of "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" and "Rise of Tiamat", so you don't NEED Rise of Tiamat to be in print cause it's all one book now. It also contains many revisions and rebalances over the original.
Cause, uh... the originals were not the best written, to be honest.
ok so i have never played d&d but ive always wanted to so the question is where do i start ?
Best place to start is checking out our beginner links pinned in this channel, including the all important Basic Rules

Wanna get some DM tips? #dm-discussion
Got some homebrew you wanna share, #homebrew

Complete newcomer to DND. I have only played a friend's self-made RPG. Looking for where to start. I prefer Virtual but in person would be cool if i can figure out travel plans (757/Hampton Roads). I'm available Sat & Sun, or the mornings on Weekdays.
Welcome, this channel is for figuring out the basics. If you want to find a group, I recommend our game finding channels

@crude musk Awesome, thank you!!
how do i find a dc?
I assume for your spells: it's based on your class. your spellcasting (or pact magic) feature, or your monk Ki feature, or whatever, will have a formula somewhere.
Every DC is 8 + your proficiency bonus + an ability modifier.
For example, Wizard uses their Intelligence for their spells, making their spell save DC 8+prof+ INT mod.
In each class' description, if one or more of their abilities have a DC for your target's saving throws, that class description will tell you how to calculate it. If a monster or magic item has abilities that require saving throws, the text for those monsters & items will tell you what the DC is.
oh okay thanks
That said, a DM might run into a situation where they need to pick a DC of their own.
As a general rule of thumb, 10 = easy, 15 = medium, and 20 = hard.
Hey, DM’ing is seeming scary especially since I’m new.. and I would honestly like to know where I should start if I’m willing to take on the role of a “good” DM. And maybe additional advice that other DM’s could pass down on me that’s helped them starting? I forgot to mention I’m not really that knowledgeable about bigger words in the vocabulary to make really good detailed scenes should I just read more to spice up my storytelling?.. Anyway, that’s all I want help with if anyone could shoot me some messages sometime I’d be happy to get to understand D&D better
-Focus on fun first and foremost.
-You don’t have to know everything, be willing to make a ruling to keep things going but feel free to revisit it and discuss it after the game
-it’s okay to pause the game to handle things
-make sure everyone playing has the same expectations of what kind of game is being played, what’s allowed/not allowed, and how differences of opinions/conflict between people will be handled.
-protect the game - the goal is to have fun and if you and your players are not having fun it’s time to stop the game and figure out why
