State of my two campaigns
Monday: Currently with a group of half giants heading to the nearest town to bury some soldiers of another faction in the country cause they don't believe their bodies will be recovered otherwise.
Wednesday: Caught an enchanter blood mage woman behind the intro quest, but she had an ominous thing to say on the matter.

Ominous Vague Bullcrap is Ominious Vague Bullcrap.
Just drink red bull and you'll be able to type away
Dwarf or Elf
Halfling
Never had it and prob never will
Based
I dont drink it either
Might run the adventure in FR book that has a Blob of Annihilation in it
I wanna use ole blobby
Dwarf. We need more dwarves.
how useful is the sleep spell?
Super! But mostly at low levels, I understand.
Against low health targets, a great spell. No-save instant knock out for 1 minute
Though yeah at higher levels the enemies are gonna have lot more health to work with, so you either need to get bunch of targets low, or a single target away from all other lower health creatures to only target them, so pretty situational spell
It's possibly better in 2024 rules as it hits a Wisdom save rather than HP, but has no upcasting available in return.
It's significantly improved in '24
I always felt it was an odd one.
Especially since it is now actually viable for much longer
If other things in the game acted like it, it wouldn't have been as confusing of a spell. But to my knowledge nothing does.
color spray
I love making super bad ms paint sketches of things
great for making a good image of locations
Ms paint boss fight time
painter boss fight
This would be a great joke clair obscure reference
the ms paintress
Thinking about a first level wizard spell to take with magic initiate
what class are they?
Identify is pretty goated
find familiar, shield, magic missile, detect magic, identify
Cleric
oh im also a fan of wardaway
I'm a knowledge cleric so get identify and detect magic from domain
Shield might be the way to go
Unseen servant
Because nobody would see it coming
i like Spellfire Flare
I was considering taking that and find familiar with Ritual Caster (making the character at 4th level)
My spell list is very thicc
I'm gonna have a Bat familiar for 60ft of Blindsight
and you can lay on hands on a distance
I'm thinking he has like a mummified bat hanging from the thing he's using to tie his beard, and when he uses Find Familiar the ghostly spirit of the bat emerges from the mummifies bat in his beard
you can cure wounds through your familiar
Mage armour?
I'm a Cleric I'll have 18 AC normally anyways
With my 14 dex and scale mail from my starting gold
Using a shield and dagger when I'm not spellcasting
He's using a Dagger because he's an evil cleric
weird question why does that mean he has to use a dagger?
He doesn't have to
But I'm choosing to because its cheap, I'm tracking carry weight, and have more dex than strength
cultists use daggers, thats just the iconic cultist weapon
Daggers are cheap and easily concealed. You gotta give daggers some love
1d4 weapon respecters rise up
daggers got a good buf with the new nick weapon mastery
My Dwarf Zealot Barbarian used dual light hammers and was a real powerhouse in the party
But he also had 20 strength and boots of striding and springing so
I should have had him use a light hammer and club to get Slow in there
Woah, back up. The ritual blade is for rituals.
Daggers are okey, the only problem i have with them is their giga low damage
1d4 feel bad even if you are able to do 1 more attack per action
scimitars are pretty good alternative
I love Vortex Warp
better to ask than ask to ask
dual wielder at lvl 4 can i attack 3 times?
Only if you have a Nick weapon
as i said yesterday, yeah
Strixhaven's spells are really OP or Broken
someone else was sayin no
the only notable spell was just silvery barbs
How about Silvery Barb?
I keep warning my dm "Are you sure you want me to able to use Silvery Barb"
everything else was fairly forgettable
thats one spell.
Silvery Barbs is hardly problematic. The worst it can do is slow down an encounter.
ok if i can do 3 attacks with dual wielder and i have two weapon fighter does that mean all the extra attacks get the ability modifier added to them or only the one usin the nick
only thing I don't like about silvery barbs is it creates this weird culture at the table where you don't announce if something was a crit or not
Ugh. Honestly, the lag it introduces is the major pain point for me, and I make DM rolls in the open.
slows down a lot
Need some kind of inoffensive signal a player can raise if they want to SB a roll. I'm not taking a moment every time a die hits the table to ask if anyone wants to jump on it.
when a co player picked silvery barbs the dm stopped saying it was a crit but had to wait to check if the player anted to SB
it's like yugioh "do you wanna counter" all the time
Or the time we did five player Magic and all brought out Blue decks, for fun!
I can't wait to hear something like
"WOTC partnered with your mother to bring your childhood photos to life as playable Magic the Gathering cards"
ok if i can do 3 attacks with dual wielder and i have two weapon fighter does that mean all the extra attacks get the ability modifier added to them or only the one usin the nick anyone know?
what does dual wielder say
DW = You don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative.
TWF = When you make an extra attack as a result of using a weapon that has the Light property, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of that attack if you aren’t already adding it to the damage.
Enhanced Dual Wielding. When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a weapon that has the Light property, you can make **one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn **with a different weapon, which must be a Melee weapon that lacks the Two-Handed property. You don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative.
TWF?
two weapon fighting
ye its hogwarts
When you make an extra attack as a result of using a weapon that has the Light property, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of that attack if you aren’t already adding it to the damage.
Looks like in the end you will be adding the damage @fiery nimbus
I just pinged myself
Naturally the college that uses Silvery Barbs is strixhavens version of Slytherin
so the scimitar using the using the nick would get the ability mod added but the DW extra attack doesnt?
I will never respect whips
The evil spell would come from the jerk house
how the TWF says, if you don't add it already, add it
it does. also #dnd-rules for future reference
it does get added to all of them
i will post there from now on
correct
unless you intend to throw this weapon
in this case we rule it as improvised weapon and it doesn't get the properties
yeah dual wielder says Melee weapon i thought the dagger was melee but if your throwin it its a improvised weapon
yep, in the books there is tables that show you their properties
Some weapons have the throw prop and show their range and all that
daggers, javelins, spears, trident, etc.
yeah daggers can be thrown but if they are thrown they are no longer a melee weapon ?
they are being used in a melee attack or in a range attack there?
thrown attacks are a ranged attack made with a melee weapon
DW says melee weapons
the inverse to better explain is if you hit a guy with a gun, does that turn it into a melee weapon?
no, its just a melee attack with a ranged weapon
Example: hitting with the stock of a gun
yeah so if i throw a dagger at a guy doesnt that mean its a ranged attack with a melee weapon then
thats what i said yes
yeah
so DW would work
Enhanced Dual Wielding. When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a weapon that has the Light property, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn with a different weapon, which must be a Melee weapon that lacks the Two-Handed property. You don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative
must be with a melee weapon
doesnt say a melee attack
oh yeah, in that case you can throw
haHAHA
also, again #dnd-rules
he wanted to throw many daggers at the same time?
I like how some of the one page adventures in AiF give bastions as a reward
Mostly glad they're keeping them as a mainstay so far
AiF? what is that?
i was talking about Scimitar he was talking about
I also like how renown is being used more
Heyyo, I'm someone interested in getting into d&d just that i have 0 ball knowledge of anything, can anyone walk me through 🙏
I have seen contents but 0 idea of how to play nor how things work
I mean yeah, what exactly do u want to know
also check #dnd-newcomers
Tbh just the important stuffs, how things work and stuff
I mean start by reading the free basic rules, dnd for the most part is just a lot of reading and rules
mmmm.... which weapons he would mostly prefer?
i expect for being a farmboy some axe//trident would be
I think he would think "all good adventurers use swords"
My farm boy uses a Flail
hello
John Dungeon is a crazy farmboy fighter is a classic tho, just accidentally becoming a legend by surviving everything
hello
baiscally Duncan the Tall
Lol
"you see, at first i defended my cattles agaisnt some wolfs, boars and then someday an owlbear. It seems that killing one is pretty hard and all that so when i tried to sell its meat and feathers the adventurer guild came straight to me and asked me lots of stuff ya"
10 in every stat
probably would dumb stat int
"So after explaining i killed it with my wood axe they were froze in place and offered me lots of gold, magic items and even one offered me some lands too for expand my farm, just signing some document about some sort of marriage or some weird stuff like that. Eventually i ended up doing adventures because it seems im giga good fighting monsters"
how you doing
hey guys if i use pact blade with conjunction of the spell hungering blade does that mean i get major temp hp????
its a sick loophole
wisdom was for animal handling isnt it?
ye
That’s actually a really good accidental hero setup. Farm life to straight-up owlbear problems is wild, and the guild just going, you’re coming with us, while he’s like, what did I do? is too funny. John Dungeon definitely feels like the kind of guy who’d become important just by existing and surviving things he shouldn’t
wasnt the main guy in demonslayer a farm boy?
be welcome to use it like an origin story ngl
Doing great, Hbu
yo if i preorder ravenloft the horrors within on dndbeyond, i gotta buy it from a different site, so how do i get the digital part of the bundle?
Im unfamiliar, though, temp hp doesn't stack so I doubt it'd work
nope, it was a coal maker.
His parents were the people that make coal and sell it through the villages, things happened and etc. etc. etc.
but they made charcoal?
the wizards site is official
and its only if youre not in the us
okay thank u<3 i HATE buying stuff online
if we use all the pact blade invocations thats like 30-40 necrotic damage per turn
i indeed am not
yeah, there is ways to make charcoal and they made some to sell.
He was out selling some when the night that things changed, a neighbor told him to sleep at his place because was too late and the story start from there
yeah, if you want the book on ddb, digital is the way to go. for the physical book, you can try hitting up local game stores when the early release is available
What level? Because that's not really that much
nah im preordering it so i can get the cool cards and dm screen and dice and other stuff
Also I'm unfamiliar with the hungering blade spell, as I do not own the book
fair nough. i think you get those if you only preorder digital
necrotic wasnt like radiant but just evil? same going if its too resisted or not
so if i buy it on wizards ill have it on dnd beyond? sorry for the dumb questions, im not very good with this stuff </3
That actually works really well as an origin, ngl farm life, why is the guild here? is such a smooth escalation, and I love that he’s not even trying. It just keeps happening to him. Also, I’m curious, how would you run the guild here? Like, are they recruiting him or just watching like this guy is a problem but useful?
level six add the hexblade subclass to that and the darkness spell with elven accuracy so you are bound to crit every turn that may rack it up to 50dmg with 50 tmp hp everyturn
Looking forward to the Ravenloft book.
Best to discuss it in #third-party since Crooked Moon isn’t official. I’m curious about what features you’re using to amp the necrotic damage
add the great weapon mastery to that should rampup even more
What does the hungering blade spell say?
say gain temp hp equal to the damage dealt does specify the spell damge or the weapon damage
wanted to ask here to make sure if its an actual loophole i found or im being stupid
That sounds unbalanced
And yeah what Star said
pact of blade
you can basically make your basic weapon damge be either nec,psy or radiant
sry what are we using here ?
It seems like it’d be good for lower levels. I expect it to fall off when it starts eating into your limited pact magic slots
A 3rd party unofficial spell
ah, I see
could be paired with shadow of moil and shield to make sure attacks never hit you
I mean for a third party "exploit", thats really tame and theres plenty of workarounds
At first they wanted to just ask what happened and where he found the owlbear body, he would say he slayed it with his axe and at first they wouldnt trust him so someone strong of the guild would Strongly handshake his hand, finding out he is really really strong.
Realizing that he Fr took down an owlbear with an wood axe alone, getting amazed and after some intern talk offer him to work for them and use that strength for something bigger, help people.
Wont see him like a danger because people around would talk good about him and they would kinda know him, like one provider of farm stuff
lmao fair
i just though its a very cool tactic
Shadows and Banshees, yum
I mean IF (and thats a big IF) your dm even allows that spell
exactly lol, or anything with life drain
And necrotic resistance/immunity
The combo is still fairly resource heavy. Granted you get your pact magic slots back faster but still
personally, if you sent me a spell that just deals damage and gives you temp HP for how much damage you dealth, that would be an instant nope
I mean if u coffeelocke it maaaaaaybe
Yeah ok fair fair lol
but even then theres better stuff to do
After some tests, firm some papers and other things, he would became an adventurer because
A) Good paid
B) ITs funny and he is enjoying a more epic life (Enjoying the adrenaline)
c) Can change the peace of his life and even see new places
the spells usually give you about 4-8 temp health not counting the pact blade exploit
whats the exact wording?
Honestly I feel like farmboy would be an adventurer because he has a hero's heart
You imbue a weapon you are holding, or your Unarmed Strikes, with ravenous negative energy. For the duration, when you hit a creature with an attack using the empowered weapon or Unarmed Strike for the first time on a turn, the target takes Necrotic damage equal to your spellcasting ability modifier, and you gain a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to the Necrotic damage dealt.
- theres plenty of ways to deal a lot of damage with melee attacks
- if you can buff teammates, martials easily dish out 20+ per attack after certain lvls
He wants to protect the people around him, though he's not strong, his heart is in the right place
whats the duration
and target?
Imagine visiting his farm and see him carry a whole cow on his soulder with not so much problem, because the cowy friend got sleepy under the sun
yeah, something like that but unaware of how strong he is
tbh thats kinda vague, imo RAI this means you only get temp HP = to your spAM
16 strength, 15 con, 10 in everything else, John Dungeon
A bit in Wisdom as well because Farmers are "wise"
even IF you make your normal weapon attacks necrotic, those would then also be 2 seperate instances of necrotic damage being dealt, therefore overriding any ridiculous amount of tHP you would have gained anway
can even make him crack some jokes from time to time and then do like Spiderman and someday give the other party POV of him.
That his presence sometimes feel dangerous
oo good point
asked before if animal handling was wis, it is so yeah
Heavy Armor is flavored as him having a bucket on his head, with pots and pans taped to his body
bc it forces you to gain temp HP, and any temp HP gain overrides any previous one
His main weapon is a flavored Great Weapon (Shovel)
na, too dummy but could be said he is a barbarian too instead of fighter
a good 1v1 exploit maybe?
any of both of them could work
- the order would then be: 1: weapon attack and 2: THEN the spAM
not really, you literally get infinite false life casts at lvl 1 in 2024 if u want (on a warlock)
so its not even remotely worth it
hmmm fair fair
oh, it is only at lvl 1? damn... thought it scaled that
Everyone in the party I DM has an AC of 16 or above, I love throwing saving throws at them
The day has come though, next session they'll be fighting a mini boss that doesn't attack with saving throws, wish me luck
with the whole warlock things, welp, something new to learn
That guild reaction is actually perfect like you did that with a wood axe? is such a clean reveal and yeah I like that they’re more impressed confused than anything, especially since he’s just the chill farm guy the handshake moment is still hilarious btw peak oh this guy is different energy lowkey John Dungeon already feels like the kind of regional legend people just casually talk about anyway I’d actually be down to hear it or just send it to me in the DMs if you end up working on it later
And they automatically get the highest roll
do they now? interesting
but either way, the "exploit" is heavily up to interpretation/misuse of rules
Yeah, I know because I have a Hexblade Warlock with Fiendish Vigor
some tavernkeeper would ask him if he could help him with the barrels.
They saw him carry 120l barrels of wine//beer like nothing in each shoulder
sailing a boat in dnd is hard
requires a crew of twenty to sail, and half or more of the crew must have proficiency with water vehicles.
its a mini boss, let them enjoy their power trip once
I see, I mostly know about the general class stuff of certain classes (like warlock) that I like better in 2024, e.g. invocations being given earlier + the "pacts" being invocations, didnt know about the max HP stuff tho
then 400 baboons
This is why I say that no one runs D&D 100% RAW
that makes sense lmao
Oh no, two hits from him and they're statistically going down
thats at least like 10 people that need prof in water vehicles
And he has Battlemaster Maneuvers with Multiattack
So does battle master what makes him so special
His weapon has an extra damage die
like they said in Pirates of the caribbean , "you only need from 4 to 8 to run a ship"
whats a cantrip on warlock that curses enemies without dealing damage to them
You can, just don't run it RAW
none
Im trying to play a warlock that cant do damage to enemies
BAD idea
So... just debuffs?
Unless u grossly misinterprwt guidance as a curse tho those who dont believe in any gods lmao
yes
Pick up Pact of the Chain, have your familiar do the damage for you
Why do u wanna torture yourself like that?
I mean that's still damaging, same way secondary spell effects are
welp, there would be some crews available in some ports.
experienced would cost more money but less problems in the sea so
That works but not doing damage in dnd is like trying to force yourself to be vegen in a party full of only meat eaters
Bad analogy, bc the second one can work quite easily
It's forcing your party to pick up slack on your behalf
What tokii said
Warlock being one of the more damaging classes too..
damage spells feel more boring to me
I mean they dont HAVE to be, they are one of the most customizable classes imo
Warlocks don't have to use spells
Yeah, but like.. thats kinda warlocks entire point
Okay? So in combat you constantly run away, let your party probably die ans then what?
You can be a martial warlock
You dont have to but warlocks are all about burning the brightest
Aka max casting any spell that throw out
True that, but theres also plenty of features and spells u can use for rp purposes
My advice is just to pick up pact of the chain if you want your character to not get blood on their hands + it doesn't use damaging spells
Especially bc they get them back more easily
But actively choosing not to hurt people is even worse
I just need a cantrip thats a debuff or a buff and Im fine
when combat is a core pillar of dnd
But yeah also @timber turtle
What is your goal with this?
Guidance ig, but you'd need Magic initiate for that i think
does warlock even have any cantrips that buff?
Not on its own iirc
True Strike? but that's still damaging
But via pact/feats
Cantrips? No
just to have fun
I mean friends is there
For Warlocks of all classes
not really a buff tho
Friends is arguably worse than Dancing Lights
Yeah, but the whole "is don't want to do damage" thing:
No direct damage? No damage EVER? Even if its secondary ?
It is but I still use it
I like it for "Hey, whats up doc" moments
Ha right, I forgot that one exists
No hitting enemies run ahh build 😭
Lmao I read that in Bugs Bunny's voice
I could use a damage spell if it had a major enough debuff on it
Friends is peak toon force
Honestly, could be really cool, but D&D doesn't really have a lot of buffing and debuffing spells, especially at low levels
Mind sliver
Okay? I still don't necessarily get the requirement bc that's a bit of an arbitrary metric but u do u
Mind Sliver, Vicious Mockery, though warlocks don't get that
but cantrips dont usually have "big" debffs
Or rather, all the spells that do that do so as a secondary effect
since you can just spam them
Sry, most*
being able to spam a huge debuff without any cost would be unbalanced
Tbh, I really like hunger of hadar, even though it's not that good
wdym hunger is amazing
It might seem like a funny idea "oh haha, I haven't killed anything and it's been like 3 sessions"
But over time you'll feel left out when the party gets cool moments like "how do you want to do this", meanwhile, outside of roleplay you haven't really contributed much to combat
Blinded
Im so sad that only bards/warlocks and a sorcerer subclass get it :/
Hunger Of Hadar is good, though...
Bards get Hunger?
Well magical secrets
Its not a GOOD pick over other spells
They don't in 2024 anymore.
Ah, yeah I wouldn't waste my few magical secrets on hunger
Not anymore
Thanks Tokii
secrets is stuck to druid clerics and warlocks
I kind of imagine other people would like it because theyre doing more damage because im reducing ac or other things on the enemies
Ah see thats where the "5e" in my name comes in lmao
Kinda like Magic Initiate
being able to blind someone is very strong through
...?
And you can still see inside the darkness
Both are 5e.
Yeah theres very little spells that reduce ac
2014* they could take any spell
Yeah see, nothing really does that directly, and you'd do more damage overall if you attacked outright.
If you REALLY want to do this, don't play a warlock.
Go for druid or sth
Bard is the better buff/debuff
Or a Cleric
Or cleric, they get more of the buffs
Druid, Bard, Cleric
Id say bard cause inso
Fair
At least you can cast Bless and give your party a bonus to attack rolls and saving throws
Clerics dont get much to do with there bonus action
Depends on subclads
I mean, just pick up the telekinetoc feat and shove some enemies
True that
Cleric is very main action heavy
Sanctuary is nice
WoTC, I need more bonus actions.
If only sanctuary worked like it did in bg3
Give me more Bardic Inspiration features...
What's the difference ?
Pretty much just got rid of the wisdom saving throw entirely
Huh interesting
Just cant attack that creature unless its a AOE
For a first level spell??
I mean tbh that would enable a LOT of broken stuff in normal dnd
He’s not even trying, it’s just everyone else slowly realising how strong he is. He already feels like a regional legend at this point
I mean you cant do any aggressive actions either or the spell just ends
Well yeah, but theres plenty of things that, on a technicality, are not aggressive
If the warded creature makes an attack, casts a spell that affects an enemy, or deals damage to another creature, this spell ends.
Yeah but dnd also e.g. has a lot of items that dont fall under any of these categories
like?
fair point
But could break encounters at early games if I just get the "no attack" button
holy shit 5.5e completely killed twilight sanctuary lmfao
How so?
It buffed it?
since clerics get two channels at level 3?
granted the main reason twlight cleric was so good was case you got it at level 3
30ft emanation to 15ft and 1d6 + cleric level into 1d6 + wis mod
I mean yeah and?
when was twlight cleric even changed?
The good stuff later on mainly comes from flight/spirit guardians, so its a small nerf in the long run
It really was
Plus 15ft radius is still very much crazy
twlight cleric strength mainly came from all of there abilites coming online from level 1
The temp HP was a nice bonus, but theres enough easy ways around it
but since every one get 1-2 feats strating level and subclasses at level 3 its not as good any more
I’d argue the channel is still fairly strong for a minimal cost feature
Strong for early lvls, which it still is, but later on it didn't matter
Nope
Cleric is still incredibly strong lol
Early levels are where more gameplay time happens so saying it’s weaker late game doesn’t excuse the early power
that too cleric over all is still stupid amounts of strong
Twilight is stronger because it's still Cleric
New divine intervention is dumb and it’s funny
Oh? What was changed ?
The life cleric on my Thursday games loves the mid combat prayer of healing short rest
you can cast any 5th level spellor lower as an action without componets
Lmao no way
Yeah, once per long rest a free 5th or lower level spell from 10th level is mad
Do you have to be in a love triangle with two monster boys to be this class?
Prayer of healing being almost always the best choice
What?
The other great spell is instant cast Hallow
It's a Twilight Reference
Hallow for 2x damage is great
Ohhh, flew right over my head whoops
he doesnt know
Our party has 2 monks and a fighter so the mid battle short rest gives all the martials back most of their everything it’s great
me watching as the figher gets both his action surges back with an action
If we had a warlock it would have been funnier
My party has a fighter, monk, and warlock, I'm generous as hell with short rests which is probably the only reason they survive some encounters I throw at them
The fact that we have not 1 but TWO spells that can give you a short rest is still amazing to me
and prayer of healing can be obtained by anybody btw
Catnap is bad comparatively but you can technically stack them
true
Prayer of healing is lv2 cleric not anyone can get it
yeah huh
if your dm allows dragon marks mark of healing
Paladins
I….dont count that as ‘anyone can get it’ since baseline those are wvberon exclusive without direct dm permission
Oh yea
Most dms let me take mark of healing as a wizard
Lucky. I want a dragon mark of healing Necromancer still
Don't forget our lovely pallys 😎
Potent dragon mark is so peak
Broken*
Just getting all the spells added to your list just like that
A campaign of mine turned into a biweekly game... Time to find a sixth campaign...
Mark of Healing is fun
My current character has Mark of Sentinel, but he's not a caster, so he only gains the non-caster benefits
I just hope the updated Necromancer subclass is good. I didn’t get around to putting in a feedback report but I really didn’t like the level 14 UA feature
Make it seven
I can cast greater res without using a spell slot
... I will not be baited into this. I shan't.
I mean, I could probably fit in a seventh game...
More D&D is always good
If all your games are biweekly and you have time each weekday you can hypothetically have 14 campaigns going
Nah trying to join a dnd game for every day of the week is a sure fire way to burnout ville
I would die before turning the game I DM into a biweekly game
I need my weekly D&D with THAT specific group
The people that respect my calls, like roleplaying, doesn't mind if their character dies
My only in person game is largely people that are hands off for roleplay comparatively which is also my most consistent game each week
Session 0 of Icewindale is done
😎
We're doing it with 2024 Characters and monster statblocks
2024 wild magic sorcerer with a shard of the feywild gotta be the most fun thing ever
what is mage hand press
I wanna do it so bad
3rd party
i cast punch
So what does the entire party look like
Wild magic sorcerer with details shard on a human with the lucky feat and the spell silvery barbs. Everything is gambling
LEts go gambling!
We've got
Triton Paladin (Me)
Goliath Barbarian
Dwarf Cleric
Human Druid
Yuan-Ti Artificer
We're starting off at level 1 ofc
Every rng spell possible
im looking at the barbnarian subclass from mage hand press and its so funny
I'm the only one immune to extreme cold because of natural cold resistance lol
you can pretty much force two rolls of your wild magic table if you use tides of choas and use a meta magic point as well as a sorcerery point
Patron God? (Please be Poseidon)
People still paly the triton race?
No.
He doesn't have a Deity
Smite with the power of Tridents
I though they went bye bye in the great wars of 1200
Not for people in the Icewindale Group:
||My character was reincarnated as a Triton as per his character secret, he was not born as one.||
bruh
A little too late
Wow, very interesting, now when I think Triton I think Merman, which I could be wrong so I'mma go see what the Triton species looks like
through I do have a question abou that spell
Triton is basically an aquaman
Nope, they have legs
Why does it only like
Triton aren't necessarily Merfolk.
They have humanoid bodies
why is only those set amount of races
Aquaman has legs too?
Why not more
Because those are the base ones that everyone has access to.
Why cant I come back as like a warforged or goblin
Yeah sorry, didn't see your Aquaman message
And the books only typically count for basic things
i guess that makes sense
You can homebrew the spell to allow everything if you wanted
Oh wait nvm
It says "the dm can choose another playable speices"\
Roll 1d10 and consult the table below to determine the body’s species, or the DM chooses another playable species.
So those are only really examples of what you can come back as
So in theory I could start as a human and turn into an centaur
Yeap, I suppose so, then
can someone explain this to me
The reincarnated creature makes any choices that a species’ description offers
We're working on book 2. If we could get it on DNDBeyond I'd be ecstatic. Spread the word!
Its the dinosuar person himself! its John dinosaur 🤯
Even more dinosaurs?!?
Yippee
I mean I've got to be someplace XD
He's real
I should make my party fight a dinosaur...
Holy hell, hi! I'm Amity, I got your book for my birthday
the Doctor is real
A skeletal dinosaur!
Exterminate, Exterminate!
Not THAT Doctor!
Hope you enjoyed it 🙂
Funny enough, i think Doctor Who had a dino episode
You're a Dino Epsiode, Ti
Basically get the word out, get people buying it and let wizards know you want more dinos and other weird extinct nonsense 🙂
Oh I did! I've loved dinosaurs forever, and combining them and dnd was amazing!
Lemme channel my dino autism real quick
Also the optional rules for each dino are peak
It's had a few. Only one I've seen is the Matt Smith one
I only know through the MtG cards lol
Thank you so much! It was one of the most fun parts of putting it together. So many weird in jokes
I love me some Dungeons and Dinosaurs
Would a barbarian be a waste in a murder mystery game
Following the advice of someone I just add 20 hp to the dinosaur and bludgeoning vulnerability and I got me a skeletal t. Rex for my party to fight
Not at all
It really depends
It's pretty good roleplay material
You can also strong-man
Bringing up Big Al made my inner child so happy
I've never had as much fun as I had dming a session where my players got very confused as to why I was suddenly narrating everything going on in a really british narrator voice XD
Just finished writing a skeletal t. rex a few weeks back. Synergy!
I mean what if Hercule Poirot solved the mystery by throwing the killer through a wall
I'd watch that
Just wanna say I love the magical dino's from your book amazing work
Hurray!
Hercule Poirot played by Dwayne the rock johnson
Thanks so much. It's been a treat doing them.
I had an idea just now for an Astral Self Monk, where, instead of them getting a stand-type thing when activating their Astral Self, it's instead flavored as them taking off their weighted clothes. The damage from the initial activation would be flavored as the shockwave from the clothes smashing into the ground. The visage's abilities could be flavored as taking off the weight allowing the Monk to think more easily. The body and awakened Astral Self can easily be flavored as the character just being really strong.
Hii! Does anyone have recommendation for songs that wound fit a battle the players can't win (it's no tpk don't worry, but I want a sad melancholic almsot regretful vibe?) :D
Lyrical is fine as long as it isn't copyright :D
Sif the Great Grey Wolf from Dark Souls
Artorias the Abysswalker/Knight Artorias, also from Dark Souls
Yes, I know suggesting Souls music is a cliche but yeah
I would love that because I suck at homebrewing sub classes and absolutely adore y'alls path of the tyrannosaur subclass
...PATH OF THE T-REX? They have a T-Rex?
"We have a t-rex!"
I wish that they went forward with that Dino druid subclass
Hi
Guys i have some ideas for a campaign
Ngl its kinda buns but anyone want to hear it?
#dm-discussion maybe
for book 2, are you guys planning on making any more subclasses?
#dm-discussion or #dm-world-building , depending on if it's something you need help developing or just an idea to share. but yeah i'd love to hear it
Thanks so much. Wait till people see the ancient beast warlock
We've got 4 new classes. An education Bard, a tyrannosaur grapple Barbarian, a classification based wizard and a warlock whose patron is animalistic. Ties into one set of rules were including themed round skull island and kaiju
Bard subclass!!
Lmao it's so hilarious to me
"College of Education"
"I have forged a pact with an ancient creature." "I follow the ancient ways of great beasts."
"Hi, I'm David and I'm a math teacher."
dont underestimate the man who has to do calculus
i assume if it’s in the style of ancient dinosaurs, the education bard would specialize in paleontology
Hello.
I require the ability to play this subclass for my next bard. Show me the way of the math teacher.
Harnessing the power of math rocks
was thinking now, there is any feature//racial feature//etc. like this?
"When you take a short rest you can get the benefits of a long rest"
Recharge once per long rest.
I need some inspo for making a character bro
I wanna write a character but there’s just too much I wanna do and make and all that
favorite game/movie/book?
I mean u want plain ideas, or do u want help to narrow it down?
yeah, know those but i mean, im talking with friends about "original" ideas and one that came in my mind was that one
Sorta inspiring from "Healing prayer".
Simple but good itself
also no, bc that would be kinda busted
I mean theres a bunch of things for short rests
at least not in the capacity you described (to my knowledge)
It’s fine to pick a basic race with a grounded/normal problem
-human fighter, brother died to bandits
would be limited to a racial feature or some sort of very rare item
I mean the "limited to racial feature" just means its way stronger than a lot of other races
Randomly select three classes. Discard one. Pick one to be the class. Make it be like the last. No multiclassing.
being able to just fire off all spells available to you, short rest and get them back is a bit op
i mean it like isnt a Feat that anyone can take or something like that
If not take it like a monk feature
that was another thing i had in my mind, would be in a race that is mostly used in martial for its stats.
So if you pick it being a caster, you wont get a whole good thing, just a part of it.
Like someone playing an orc caster lets say.
Yeah, you can do it but there is other more "optimal" options
The second one I guess
ight give us your options then
I think you'd be better off going with Catnap as a racial spell when they reach 5th level
Im not sure if I should do something more grounded like a human or an elf or a tiefling, or do something that’s a wildcard like warforged or something
I mean sure? but limiting it like that simply bc "otherwise its just unbalanced" is a bad approach in of itself imo
I mean, I personally think of mechanical stuff I want and then go off off there
Yeah I guess I’ll just make both and see which one I’d like to play mechanically
catnap? what would be that?
Also a reborn would be cool but like I don’t want it to seem like I’m trying to minmax 😭
lets u shortrest essentially
I mean the question is if your dm even allows them first of all
Im pretty sure
Eh I don’t think it’s worth to ask I’ll just do a warforged
I mean those technically are eberron, so questionable if they allow it
same way reborn are from a specific setting
(Reborn arent actually)
They showed up in the ravenloft book but the concepts they cover are from a lot of settings (intentionally so), but also the nature of the ravenloft setting already dips into various settings.
Warforged (by name and lore, among other things) are heavily eberron specific
fair enough Ig
The warforged i can make, I haven’t asked about the reborn
but yeah, personally I wouldnt consider them as a "base race" still
But now that I think about it I don’t really know how a warforged can exist in the lore
Ill see where making a random character takes me
And get back to yall
Is It difficult to find groups?
I was so excited and even made a character on Dnd beyond and roll 20 but it seems difficult to find a group and get to play my first ever Dnd campaign TT
#find-a-game is so useful
It can be described like finding a date
Wait wrong channel
#looking-for-players is useful
Damn i won the wrong lottery then
I know but to get a spot, u have to compete with more experienced players
Also my timezone gets alot more responses, I am from Asia so it's really competitive
I am too dumb to be a DM
It’s not that hard tbh
If you are a DM, than lemme know if you have any spots in the future pls
Nah
at least you can get something kinda normal from europe time zones.
I play with europeans and i have to be 7am awake while for them is like 1 or 2 pm
European time zones work for me aswell but they are too contested
Getting started on DMing is a lot easier than most people think
A lot of it is just mentality
just gotta keep looking is unfortunately the best answer we can give you
Yeah, the ratio between players and active dms looking for games is very wide
But at least you can work with them and find easier, keep searching and you will find
Like my theory is Player to DM ratio in general is 1:50 to 1:100 range
Thanks buddy
And not all dms are recruiting or even running games.
Yeah seems like it
and a dm can be either 1 week searching a party or 3 months too, depend of a lot of things
if they dont have an already made group from past campaigns
Yep and games have a high chance of dying within a short time too
DnD "Players" aka the "I love dnd and want in groups but Id never actually play dnd"
Mismatched playstyles/expectations.
that its another thing too, some Dms prefer to play with some past players who ended their campaigns or contact some unfortunate players that had to left for who knows which reasons
or with players that already know between each other, etc. etc.
Only two surefire ways online I'm aware of to get groups in a reasonable time.
Become the DM.
Paid games.
or be giga lucky
For traditional games anyway, there's many westmarches, communitys that run one shots ect.
or be friend with a DM and with him and other players adapt
true, but its something
Many friendships have ended at the table cause of how tabletop brings certain aspects of people out
It is something tho
I mean not necessarily
Im pretty new and I got into one easily enough
You just gotta know what ur looking for
yep, its something that happen but at the same time could be something that one must realize.
You can try to make your friend who mostly play shooters play some chill farm game
But you must be open that he doesnt like it too or act in some ways.
Experience can matter unfortunately
Not always, sometimes DM's don't wanna teach new players , I'd say the latter is more common tho.
yep, while others dm's are more open to do teaching // starter sessions for new players
and slowly mold them for their campaigns
It's not like raiding in an MMO where half the posts are gonna be "must have clear" and other stuff
But rather for example sometimes if a dm just wants to run a one shot but doesn't have enough free time for a long one shot they may want experienced players who can keep the session moving.
I've got my Triton Paladins former party in the game as NPCs because I rolled om the Xanathars character life table lol
We've got
Maeelle Swiftbloom, a Halfling Druid (who was Riv's closest friend before he went missing)
And
Fang of Snake, a Tabaxi Fighter (who hates Riv because he thinks he abandoned them)
I do not mind teaching new players, but if I am going to teach, they are going to have to learn. While I do my best to be patient, as some people learn faster than others, sometimes I do not want the Sisyphean feeling of teaching someone the same thing over and over and over and over
Once I had a player who was in my campaign for over 6 months now, and then in one of the last sessions I had with them they said “what’s a bonus action?”. Mind you, they are a battle master fighter with Rally, Second Wind, Lunge Attack, all sorts that take a bonus action
Did not know that existed awesome
Also piracy is not a topic allowed here
i need your help dnd fanatics, im trying to make a new character with a very specific concept in mind (im not even 100% sure its possible in 5e/5.5e), is there any way for a character to manipulate their own flesh outside of the standard shapeshifting rules (with the exception of true polymorph)
im trying to make a character similar to the shapeshifters from the atom eve invincible special that grabbed debris and damaged terrain from the battlefield with their body and morphed them into weapons on their body (like turning their arm into a giant club with flesh holding onto a bunch of different rocks and debris and stuff), im just not sure how id do that 😭
And, uh, probably piracy, and no.
omg amity twin
While here is good, #character-discussion might be able to go more into detail
ah okay, tyvm! ^^
Amity for the win 💪
Wait… Amities for the win!
i was mostly asking for specific spells/races/class features that could accomplish something similar but yeah fair
TRUEEEEEE
Honestly, first time I've ever actually had important npcs from my characters life in detail lmao
Besides my Warlocks sister (but she's deceased and can't really show up as an npc)
takes notes
Of course she can, that's the whole point of necromancers
True
Ah, the tragedy of being ambushed by undead, only it turns out to be the sweet little sister turned into a ghoul trying to eat her sibling's flesh, then they have to fight to the death and end up slaughtering each other. Truly a tale for the bards.
I wonder which one shot from the FR book i should run next
The Curse on Humble Hill
Are you watching me?
Ignore the fog on the windows
I had the book open and was literally reading curse on humble hill lol
Okay, but plot twist, what if Humbling on Cursed Hill
Your welcome
Then he'd crash out and kill every matron mother in Menzobarranzan /half-joking
He's already almost one-rounded a Matron Mother by himself
I'm coming for you.
We know that.
Came out of my shell a little more at the LGS. Asked people if there was interest in TTRPGs.
The sound of progress for finding a local group.
Can beholders become ghosts or liches?
More accurate than you might think
No recorded instances of such have been shown, but they are at least able to be turned into Zombies
Spoiling nothing 🤣
Warlock
Free 1d12 of damage as a bonus action every turn, pretty solid to me
It's even better at low levels
tbh I prefer to just load up on reaction spells/ spells that "buff" myself on low lvl warlocks
unless its hexblade
but yeah witchbolt is a decent choice
Yeah new Witchbolt is very good.
Especially for warlocks imo
Since it's a spell you get value out of regardless of whether you hit or not.
old witchbolt was terrible
do you guys have any "DIY miniatures /landscape" discord
Today i used a paladin for the first time pretty much the first thing that happened was a crit with longsword + divine smite
totally not thinking of throwing a Cr20 creature at the party today
theres like 7 of them they will be "fine"
watch this man work make me want to craft
There are better damage dealers at high levels. But it's quite nice at lower levels. It's also not really free, you do need to maintain concentration.
True. And the spell can easily be broken
Time to throw an ancient white dragon at my party bois
As long as you're able to maintain a distance of under 60ft, witch bolt holds pretty well
Have fun, and here I am yet to start my first ever campaign
Helps when I can send my barbarian friend like a rabbit bulldog after the target and restrain them
they aren't prepared for a full power ancient white dragon, but i have perfect narative reasons for it to be weaker
I am not joking I did that once and it was very fun
Hell yeah. Show no mercy
I get to punch people with my Pugilist Tonight 😎
I get to read tabletop rules
its gonna be notably weaker than it woul d normally be so probably they wont die right
Just an ancient white dragon? I didn't know you were being so merciful. Bring in the White Great Wyrm!
they are 8th level maybe later
Shirley
I wonder how many sessions it's gonna be before he kills his first person in character
(He's being doing Nonlethal combat so far)
Mainly lowering its damage/to hits (Breath nerfed by its throat being ripped open, Rend by its teeth/claws being dull and broken, lower AC due to damaged scales)
Context: ||Beaten up by bad guy (Former party member) possessed by demon and the demons using the authority of the dragon to lead a siege on a town the party is occupying)||
is your pugilist a subscriber to a policy like batman's?
worst case, it was a mass hallucination
They've got the damage output and if the Druid appears hes got a nice homebrew feature that will help
itl be a tougher battle than usual but they should have it
Okay, Drizzt, settle down, we don't need extra scimmies getting Lolth into a frenzy.
/jk
honestly tempted to increase the hp because I know their output
"I think we're gonna have to kill this guy"
"Darn"
No, he just hasn't killed anyone because the party hasn't told him to.. and nobody did when he was part of the Sentinel Marshals either.
He's Warforged.
Yea im gonna up the hp a lil
make the dragon an unkillable object with an alternative wincon
The HP is 'YES, until I feel like they deserve to win'
Or until they die, whichever comes first.
Where do y’all find pugilist? I looked at a few places and the only one I found that had the actual abilities lacked the core aspects like hit dice
Thats how I usually do it tbh because their damage output is rediculous
Nonlethal is his default for dealing with criminals and beasts
It's a third party book is all I know
i know i've got a character in a Westmarch kind of game, an Oath of Vengeance Paladin, for whom i plan to get as many manacles as possible so i can arrest every humanoid enemy i may come across
The only one of my characters whom is nonlethal specifically towards humanoids is my Celestial Warlock..
Though.. that might change soon.
im just gonna give it the max HP and go from there
"My oath is to bring justice, and unfortunately for you, death is an amnesty from that, so you're coming with me."
Session starts in 10 but we always start late for some reason so wish them luck bois
Oath of justice more like
My Battlemaster Fighter is also willing to Spare people, but he's not completely nonlethal towards them
I'm surprised that's not a thing already
Its cause Oath of Devotion fits that bill by default
Looks at Oath of Devotion or Oath of Crown
Don't give it HP, just let them hit it til they either die or earn a victory through sheer effort
Oath of Vengeance better fit my needs tho, since they get Hold Person which would thus enable me to inflict the Restrained Condition to deploy the Manacles
I mean, if they're Held, they can't move their arms. You can't, either.
gonna mention what one of the party is rq: they are a bladesinger fairy that refuses any help whatsoever from humans because fairy reasons (Including healing / etc)
Eh, Oath of Vengeance can be twisted for more personal reasons
Oath of a Devotion is the DEFACTO good boy Paladin.
My Oath of Vengeance Paladin isn't a good person
But he's also not a bad person
oh, yea, easily, Oath of Vengeance is the most morally grey paladin i know of, it just happened to have the most tools for restraining suspects
Laughs in oath of Devotion villain I ran
He's just an angry person
oathbreaker watching in the corner
-# She scared me
Oathbreaker is actually evil iirc, they straight up forsake their oath specifically to seek out evil powers
I find that oathbreakers are either pure evil darkness lords, or misunderstood edgy sad good boys
Oathbreakers are the Defacto Evil Paladin, yes!
Though, for some reason people think that all Paladins that break their Oaths are Oathbreaker Paladins..
Which is false.
And I love both
Oathbreakers are NOT misunderstood.
They're doing what they do for the sake of power.
There's no misunderstanding doing evil for the sake of evil
i think the problem is that someone who breaks an oath, accordant to the vaguely existing rules of words, is an oath breaker, and they just happened to call the evil ones Oathbreaker Paladins instead of Blasphemous Paladins
OathB is just someone searching power and stuff like that, a megalomaniac if you want to mark it like something
No no I’m listing the oathbreaker paladin archetypes I’ve seen at the table. If I had a nickel for every player I’ve played with that saw the oathbreaker knight in BG3 and decided to make a paladin with an evil oath who broke it for the sake of good and now live condemned for their choices, I’d have three nickels.
They were all definitely lore breaking
yeah, this one would work like it
me personally i think calling them Oath of Blasphemy Paladins or something involving the very literal definition of Blasphemy (an action that goes directly against the principles of the faith) would have been cooler and less vague
But the players we having too much fun for me to point it out too much 🥺
From now on, I'm calling Oathbreakers "Blasphemous Paladins"
same, we are planting the new term of them
i'm down for the psyop, yea
convince a bunch of people that's what they were called before a rework that never happened and make a bunch of people try to seem like they have elite ball knowledge by calling them "Blasphemous Paladins" instead of Oathbreakers
Aha and now my Oathbroken Knight fighter subclass can rise and be the only subclass with the word “oathbr” and the letter K in its name!
Alternatively
Death Knights.. or Grey Knights (as I believe Oathbreakers were canonically called at some point?)
oath of blasphemy paladins
And the letter E
na, it would mean they would follow a path in that oath
Blasphemy isn't an oath, but a rejection of Oaths.
an oathbreaker dont follow anything
in a way it’s a creed too
also, Oath of Blasphemy is inherently oxymoronic, since that'd be an oath to violate itself, or just Oath Of Offending As Many People With Your Actions As Possible
does 5.5 have nonlethal rules?
Nonlethal is a thing, yes
this is, ofc, not even being evil, just being unlikeable
where is the rule for this?
You just say you choose to do no lethal damage and it is
yeah, what book is it in
when you reduce an enemy to 0 with a melee attack you can choose to knock them out instead of killing them
it’s in the PHB chapter 1
there’s no such thing as “nonlethal damage” as like a special category of damage, it’s a choice you make only when you reduce them to 0.
Me doing enough damage to reduce my enemies to Atoms with a melee attack but instead i declare nonlethal
Batman vs burglar with cancer bills
are you able to force Non Lethal on spells that add to damage? i.e. if i hit someone for non lethal, would the Force from HM and Radiant from Divine Favor be able to not just murder that guy?
In my defense in previous editions I'm pretty sure you had to declare if an attack was lethal or non lethal before it was rolled
I tried that in baldurs gate 3 with a non lethal hells rebuke and killed 3 people by accident
You can't nonlethal spells
That aren't Melee Attacks
Weekly Reminder that Baldurs Gate 3 is not 100% rules accurate.
same
melee attacks section only has the following:
A melee attack allows you to attack a target within your reach. A melee attack typically uses a handheld weapon or an Unarmed Strike. Many monsters make melee attacks with claws, teeth, or other body parts. A few spells also involve melee attacks.
Reach
A creature has a 5-foot reach and can thus attack targets within 5 feet when making a melee attack. Certain creatures have melee attacks with a reach greater than 5 feet, as noted in their descriptions.
Opportunity Attacks
Combatants watch for enemies to drop their guard. If you move heedlessly past your foes, you put yourself in danger by provoking an Opportunity Attack.
Avoiding Opportunity Attacks. You can avoid provoking an Opportunity Attack by taking the Disengage action. You also don’t provoke an Opportunity Attack when you teleport or when you are moved without using your movement, action, Bonus Action, or Reaction. For example, you don’t provoke an Opportunity Attack if an explosion hurls you out of a foe’s reach or if you fall past an enemy.
Making an Opportunity Attack. You can make an Opportunity Attack when a creature that you can see leaves your reach. To make the attack, take a Reaction to make one melee attack with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike against that creature. The attack occurs right before it leaves your reach.
i dont see anything about nonlethal
Maybe you shouldn't just blatantly accuse people of lying if that's not their intention, just saying
it’s under the “Dropping to 0 HP” section
not the melee attacks section
Not really, but go off lol
i mean, it remains the question, as the cause of its application remains a melee attack, but the contrare exists that it isn't the melee attack itself
p. 28 if you need a page reference
this is not how trust works btw, people are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around lmao
I'd let someone with hunters mark still nonlethal enemies
yea, i'm running a three weapon + shield Thri Kreen Paladin, so the plan is to pop Divine Favor and Hunter's Mark to burst down HP to secure an arrest, but i don't want to accidentally vaporize people lol
I rescind my previous statement
Also people can just remember rules but not remember what book it’s from
i’d allow it
I remember a lot of Tasha and Xanathar rules but often forget they’re from it
but i don’t think the rules are clear on it
Kill. /joking
ah thanks, 29. I guess its called knocking out a creature now
My Vengeance Paladin is gonna be in a ROTFM campaign
He's not doing nonlethal at all
This is SURVIVAL and if you threaten his life, he's putting you in the ground lol
the only rpg i know of where there are three core rulebooks…
ROTFM? Return of the flying mothra?
rime of the frostmaiden
Ah
you caaaan i guesss
Rise Of The Flaming Mouther
the existence of the srd helps
it's like a jibbering mouther but the teeth are molotovs
I mean, all the exploration pillar rules are in the DMG
it’s not (just) an advice book
The Star Wars TTRPG by Fantasy Flight Games has three core rulebooks (Which are all mostly the same, but with slighty different rules for certain things.)
Star wars FFG has three different eras, each one has a core book
its not the same thing >_>
afaik, DND is also the only TTRPG i know of with free rules
It's close enough for government work 😛
i didn’t have the 5.0e dmg
Can't wait to die 🔥
im not entirely sure what your point is
many TTRPGs have srds where the rules are free (minus the setting)
Pathfinder's right over there, with free rules, and litteraly all the races, items, etc.
Chadfinder
you can’t assume that people playing your RPG have previous editions of that RPG already. you can’t assume people playing 5.0e have copies of the 4e or 3e DMG.
oh, huh
Blades in the dark, dungeon world, daggerheart, stars without number ...
and when we’re talking about whether something has core rules for the game, “well, you don’t need this one because there’s previous revisions of the same book that contain those rules” is kind of, not really a counterpoint? like, yes, but you still need some version of the DMG to run that
The only thing Pathfinder (2E) restricts from free use, is basically the fluff content/adventures in the books themselves
so the DMG is a core rulebook. if you don’t have it you are playing without all the rules
All the mechanical content is A-okay, you just have to spend for all the pretty art and fluff text explaining their vast setting and the like, Plus adventures.
The Great Big Book Of How To Play The Game
I don’t mind buying three books
And I bet I could have run the game fine with only the player’s handbook. It was essentially what I was doing for years
i mean i did it. but most rpgs im used to just one book, which i can get a $20 pdf of, having all the rules
Ideally the basic rules are all you need to play a base level game of dnd
And the books just ... give you more
I wonder when WOTC will get over their crippling fear of losing a single penny, and get with the times of PDF's.
yea, my only mind books when it's more than one is if the essential rules of the game release at different times, at which point i'm gonna start thrashing around and screaming like a motion activated halloween decoration lmao
Also I ran the game fine without spending a penny on it for years as well before I got the PHB
ideally, yes, the basic rules would give you the travel rules.
basic travel rules, sure, but deluxe travel rules I think its fair to ask for moneys
But anyway, I find this debate unproductive. I take my leave
i mean stuff as simple as “how to forage” and “what happens if the party gets lost”
that’s basic rules material that could come up in any campaign. there’s a reason travel activities, which are part of the basic game loop of travel, include foraging and navigating and such
you simply cannot run the basic travel game loop without the DMG.
that’s a problem! it’s on the same level of if the SRD didn’t tell you what happens when you get knocked to 0 HP.
tbh i don't even know the travel rules myself
Are thri kreen mantis people
Yes, they're also aliens
What kind of alien
... the Alien type of Alien
At least in Spelljammer
desert ones
The kind of Alien you find in space.
Ponders Are Neogi basically Daleks, but Space Spiders?
dmg (gah!) ch 2, “running exploration”
also includes things like “how much time things take in dungeon crawling” and “how far away you can see or hear things/things can see or hear you from” and “weather”
which is all p much needed if you care abt exploration much at all
I'm gonna be real I didn't know DND even had space
Thri-Kreen hangout in the deserts too I think
yea sometimes there's space and a book called Spelljammer
Like not just Space dudes
It has so many strange versions of space :(
sometimes there's also The Far Realms that feel like somebody tried to write an eldritch without getting weird about how reality works when time doesn't exist
they say there's no time and no gravity and would ya look at that? beholders still have things that have happened to them and have yet to happen to them and are also exempt from gravity when they spawn into the material plane
Yeah, when u go up high enough u enter Fantasy In Space. Its actually its own setting, called Spelljammer.
Which has had a few forms over the years
it irks me: in a space beyond time but not space, there is no was and there isn't a will be, and motion as we understand it becomes completely impossible, as for a motion to occur an object has to have been in one location in the past to arrive at a different location at any other point in time, but without time, there's only the place, not the idea that it was there or wasn't anywhere else, nor could it ever arrive at a different location, because there is not time that can be used to traverse the space
The latest one kinda sucks and doesn't exist
People also tend to forget that OUR world also exists within D&D lore!
i hear those Avantris people are manufacturing a new one to exist
currently waiting on people playing slay the spire because they started a run less than 10 minutes before session
Sounds like they need a stern talking to about respecting other players time
And if they can't do that, Get the boot of +1 kicking.
this is kinda disrespectful of the alotted time for D&D, no?
If I were their dungeon master I would feel disrespected
I’d immediately be writing them down on the potentially kicking list
i mean it definitely depends on the duration of the spire game, right?
i've never played the videogame but if it's like, 4 minutes, that isn't so bad, right?
If they start something knowing it can bleed into session time without caring, I still find it disrespectful
Slay the Spire... im fairly sure each run goes for a bit of time
Same
To my knowledge, you're looking at minimum 30 minute runs
Holy hell that is longer than I thought
yea that's a few inches more than just rude tbh
guess todays sessions just gonna be half the party
most of the party is in the vc
one's recovering from a thing so makes sense they are busy and one literally just sad "Im good not in the mood" when I asked when they were gonna join the roll20
I think “not in the mood” is a little valid, but I’d definitely have said it differently to make it not sound like it’s some kind of convenience or thing to sometimes play when you’re in the mood
Hes "not in the mood" because hes playing minecraft.
Hi, can I ask a gaming-related question here or are there other channels for that?
is the game dnd?
what do you mean by gaming
Yes
If it's not D&D related it goes in #non-dnd-topics
then it's better fit you ask here than a server that isn't here
I just recently started thinking about the maximum possible AC
Ah then #optimization is the channel for this
Thanks guys, sorry for interrupting your conversation.
no worries, its a public server. Convos live and die every minute
Now I’m thinking of my old paladin super tank
and you speak more on this?
Just an old team combo my party did
Already had 21 AC as a paladin, but during a fight with a powerful devil, the wizard cast haste on me, cleric cast shield of faith, and then some third thing happened that I can’t fully remember Bc it was a homebrew item, and suddenly my AC was 27
wish half the party luck w/ the dragon bois
I believe jt was 27, somewhere around that range.
All I remember is standing as the one wall between the devil and my party, and holy hell did I take that job seriously
I wish you luck!
-# And I wish you better players
is roll 20 having a stroke for anyone else
I play on Roll20 every week, the answer to this question is always gonna be yes
yea but ive never see it roll everything 100 times lol
if you somehow get your hands on +3 Plate and Shield, and a few particular magic items "Of Protection" and the Shield Spell, you can likely get about 30+, right?
Oh definitely
Ye
I never did get my hands on a +3 shield :(
