true that
discord has definitely replaced the classic forum site
mostly at least, I've used the occasional RPG related forum
Has a new Dark Sun supplement been announced?
no news on official WOTC published books yet
oh
What were those new books they just announced?
-# This is irrelevant to the dark sun question
more d&dbeyond third parties. Exploring eberron by keith baker and another griffons saddlebag were all I remember
pugilist class as well
Well the biggest problem is that none of the discords out in the world are indexable. So when a small dev or a team says "Go to the discord." That means 0 questions will be searchable in a search engine.
What books?
Ohhhhh, Oki
There are updates to dark sun?!
Discord has a forum function, so questions could be catalogued to be fair
Hello
Folks
I thought they announced new official ones
not that im aware of, no
How are you all?
But not to users outside of that ecosystem
No, sorry, your mention of asking new books reminded me of a little something I saw
Oh
What is it?
Yea unfortunately
No clue, that’s why I was asking others
did seem to me like they treated this announcement of new third parties like an official book announcement. A pessimist might say theyre treating this announcement as a replacement for a new book announcement
Some book announcements have come as late as March
I got only the monster manual
were other third party book ddb releases on the server calendar like this? i forgot if it was or not
This is the first time they have announced they were comming and not shadow dropping them
My optimism combats that presimism and I say that they’re announcing the third party books to satiate us while we wait for more officials! /lh
Just want Dark Sun confirmation and date details
i wonder if they will actually do that?
yeah i think we at least have a decent chance about knowing whats coming out soonish
I hope so, just because I know there’s a lot of dark sun fans
they better q_q, I need my preservation druid
the most we know is that wotc filed some stuff with the dark sun trademark, but we cant be certain thats for an actual book or not
I would be surprised if A Dark Sun comes out and B it comes out and it is not 80% defanged.
Right here
Same here
the Apocalyptic subclasses are explicitly Dark Sun coded and the Psions/psionics are also intracately tied into the setting
Wizards is not a company I see taking a Brave step. Literally ever.
I mean they take them
Backwards
Can i ask someone for some home brew advice??
Dark Sun in this world climate as Dark Sun is with the topics it routinely deals with. Is a proverbial minefield for WotC.
its my first time playing and not dming, im making a barbarian goliath, im thinking of subclass way of beast and the lore would be a skinny dude that becomes strong and tall, but it really sounds just so generic to me, please somoene give me some advice on this i never thought of something non generic
I'm assuming it's basically EFA but psion instead of artificer with a few flavourful sub-classes and maybe a bit of information for running games in the setting
be nice if they reprint Thri-kreen in it too c:
okay yeah this was renewed in october
https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=99440014&caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&caseType=DEFAULT&searchType=statusSearch
Indulge, if you like it, do it, who cares if it’s been done before?
I once made a character who was essentially Dante from Devil May Cry. It was fun
but ye, they've been stripping a lot of lore out of 5e releases vs older editions
How come?
i dont like it that much cause its just so generic i cant stand it
There was a giant blow up about Spelljammer because one species had allusions to slavery as part of their backstory.
You should try playing the real Dante
Well, you should keep trying new ideas until you get one you like
flavor it into something more interesting, give it a good background/backstory, or pick a more interesting species
Dark Sun is just what if we did that. But everywhere all of the time at max volume.
Oh
Uhhh
I see your point
DMs are very iffy about players making characters from other IPs
Don't drow have slaves
Magic jar is a very funny spell
You know Dante was a real person right?
Duergar too. BG3 was able to deal with it in a mature manner. Not sure why it would be hard for WotC to do.
Some Drow do. But slavery with Drow is not so ingrained in the ethos of Drow that the 4e guide had to have a call-out on how to deal with slaves in your care and not be evil.
and Dark Sun is both one of the darker settings and one that is intrinsically built around environmental issues, over-exploitation of natural resources, darker topics, and several porblimatic tropes endemnic to older media
A half demon who hunts demons and fights his psycho brother that has a magic dimensional katana? /lhj
I don't really don't see the problem
Yes it has things that are obviously inspired by real issues
But it's a ttrpg with fireballs
If someone is going to make it into a real social problem that's between them and the DM
Yep! He inspired the guy who wrote Dante's inferno
Can't remember what his name was
Dark Sun is the setting specifically about social issues.
I know
I’m going to assume that the real guy named Dante isn’t actually a half demon but cool
Yeah IRL Dante was just a punk with a chip on his shoulder who wrote fan fiction where all of the people he didn't like went to the bad place.
I'd assume the isunuation with bravery was less about someone casuing an issue at a table and more the chuds en mass calling for a boycot that goes nowhere and making a big deal about WotC being 'woke' or some crap
He wrote an entire 3 part self insert fanfiction about himself and his favorite author going on a literal biblical adventure to chase a girl he fell for IRL into heaven
I for one want to see dark sun revitalized. There is room for nuance in it. But uhhh that'd be a brave move in this world.
I've seen a game with stickers called woke
Everything is going to be called woke regardless of what you do
exaclty, but the beancounter types aren't a huge fan of willingly walking into that sort of thing and for better or for worse, Hasbro is very much a beancounter-centric entity
would anyone like to hop in a call and help me plan one of my sessions? im stumped on how im going to do this (its homebrew) its a 6 month campaign and ive hit a tough spot
Is someone forcing them to play?
If the bean counters had their way. Yes.
im just very unsure if wotc could do dark sun right. If they do it, theyre going to change a lot of its stuff, for better and worse
no, but if the shareholders feel it may hurt proffits, the board might apply pressure to nix anything 'problematic'
Yeah. And like they own it that is cool.
But sometimes their changes are very "How do you do fellow kids"
No.
No.
i feel a lot of them will be changes that homogenize the setting's cosmology and lore
dark sun is a setting with a single dragon who isnt tied to a color, is that gonna stay?
Mid spells, mid backgrounds, a weird Harry Potter at home vibe. There are third Party products that do what Strixhaven attempted to do but better.
But everything can be problematic
but again, I think they'll come out with a somewhat toned down version of the setting and it'll be fine
It sounds like bullshit
Not in the way Dark Sun is problematic
because it is
I'm not saying this is what's happening, I'm saying the person who was casting them as "not a 'brave' company" was likely aluding to that fact
Oh damn, they messed up stixhaven that bad? 😭
Heya folk, what we chattin'?
dark sun deals with uncomfortable themes to provide social commentary (at least some of it does, i could do without the romani stereotype elves)
God knows /j
-# A mix of dark sun and strixhaven I think
Anything can be problematic.
Dark Sun is problematic as part of its ethos as a setting.
When I think about telling an apocalyptic story, I think it hits best when the themes are taken from the world we live in today. As such, I think it's okay to let Dark Sun just exist in the past (1990s). Of course, today's world is similar to the 90s, but a lot has changed.
I think it would make a lot of sense to just tell the apocalyptic story you want, and if that means taking parts of Dark Sun, yeah that's great.
Why does every dnd thing have a Romani stereotype somewhere 😭
I love that about Dark Sun. But those are some risky dice in the modern world.
roma people
Aaaah, Dark Sun. Yeah, there are some difficult themes there to do well.
I agree with Steve tbh. I think dark sun is very, VERY 90s, and while that’s not a bad thing, it might not translate well to the 2020s
Because at the time it was a standard and easy outgroup
That’s not even getting into the PR nightmare in today’s online media climate
i do also think that the fan perception of dark sun isnt neccessarily the same as the actual setting
the fan perception of dark sun is the grimdark slavery setting
The number of people who want dark sun are split into two groups.
A. People who have never really looked at it.
B. People who love it and want nothing to change.
No, not the Romans.
I’m actually not sure where the name “Romani” comes from, but no, they’re a completely different group
ehh, I think there is a third group who think the ideas are worth exploring with a fresh take if done well but they dont trust wotc.
Here you go, bud. Have a read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people
This is my position, but I’m not itching for a dark sun remake
from what i heard one of the major themes is about the environment and how we need to stop the terrible way we treat the planet
Now that bit has only gotten more relevant
Like, yeah, on paper making a new setting is more work. But considering building it "brick by brick", it can also be more efficient in the long run.
Some post apocalyptic settings that maybe WOTC could do (and thus engage with the themes they want to):
- Magitech aristocrats destroyed the planet. You play as "hedge mages" and relearn/retake magic.
- The planet has flooded. You play as pirates on jet skis.
- The planet is in a neverending winter. People choke underground on the smog of industry. Water is scarce and hoarded.
- The mother of monsters swallowed Faerun (or any other setting). People exist within small tumors or ulcers of Her Body, clinging desparately to life.
- It's The Matrix, but you play as people trying to save people stuck in it.
rich and powerful are destorying the world for their own gain at the expense of the world and everyone else
I just want the silly druid subclass
I want reprinted Kensei
whitch honestly is a important story to tell these days
No way that's relevant in the modern world
There can be a lot of catharsis for folk in darker settings where everything is terrible except your group. That's the basis of a lot of punk settings.
It can also be a tricky thing to try and 'enforce' or show through the mechanics.
Dark Sun has a lot of interesting things going for it. But also, touches on some really hevay topics I feel weren't framed great in earlier editions, or were left somewhat unchallenged. There were also the issue of how mechanical alignment makes this a whole lto trickier- there were mechanics early on that essentially enforced the player to do 'evil' actions to heighten how desperation (like thirst) will drive you to that, or the fact the players would almost certainly have to engage with slavery at some point. But when 'enforced' by the mechanics like that it feels.. tricky.
checking the USPTO i got reminded that wotc is still hoarding the gamma world trademark, could they maybe think about doing something with it?
nope, totally not, nothing ot see here folks /s
dark sun is very much 90s edginess, which isn’t inherently bad but definitely leaves a lot to be desired in the modern day
Dark Sun except they Mörk Borg-ify it
What does the evolution of DnD have to do with Romani folk?
i feel this, i have had slavery in my games a lot but allways through the lense of, Oh these slavers need to be stoped
Many iterations of ravenloft contained harmful and lazy stereotypes of Romani people.
There is a conscious effort to tone that kind of stuff down/ rewrite to be better conscious of those implicit biases and caricatures
Previously in the conversation it was mentioned that nearly all settings had a caricature of the roma people and that's only recently been challenged. So, evolution.
Which is cool and good
God knows /lhj
not until at least like 2030~2032 at minimum
Hopefully not for a while tbh
Me waiting for elements of 4E to return at some point in the future 😅
yeah with the remaster being fresh still, probably another 5 years minimum
not till 2040 hopefully
21st of February at 11AM (CST).
or 2/3.5e
In my entire life time there has only been two dnd editions that came out, so it'll be a while
Gods not that long. We don't need a stale system. 12 years is already pretty old. We can't turn DnD into the Todd Howard.
But what about D&D on your Samsung Fridge?
TBH, editions really come about when the shift in fantasy/game focus happens. There's also still all the other editions folk can still play, which means a lot of bases have been covered.
2024 collected most of the changes to 5e over the decade so people can just pick up the core books and play, so no massive reset is needed.
As I'm fairly new to dnd I hope I'll get to enjoy it a lot as it Is before relearning everything
they generally give at least like 6~8 years between major revisions from what I've seen
though 2024 not having a point release kinda makes that comparison iffy
"And Today Bethesda presents... ANOTHER Skyrim anniversary thing! ... oh, and a remaster."
The gift that keeps on giving
Was 5e the longest running edition of D&D before 2024?
yes, still is
Bethesda drives me up a wall, I swear.
2024 is still technically 5e
this is basically year 12 of 5e
You can thank the horses for that.
2024 IS still 5e, really, no technicalities about it
There is a reason people refer to it as 5.5e though
It's more of a Remaster than a separate thing
mostly for ease of differentiating games played on the standard 2014 edition and games played on the 2024 revision
When Psion gets released, perhaps I'll consider it a new eve of Joy!
Let's just hope it doesn't stay in playtesting.
I think D&D could shift gameplay focus to either: more social narratives or more tactical combat. That could involve an edition update, but to be honest, I think it would make more sense to create "bolt on" modules to the base game.
If you want more tactical combat (like let's say hex based combat with a lot more bells and whistles and customizations), you play D&D 5E: Tactics. Or if you want more narrative focused things, using rules lifted more more lyrical games or something, you play D&D 5E: Intrigue.
Something like that.
Wait psion?
I'm just going to throw my two cents into the void that I love edgy dark settings. I'm kind of done with a lot of material and games where it's so PG, politically correct focused, and avoids morally complicated situations. There is a line that goes too far for me, though I'm not sure exactly where that is. Anyway. I'm an adult, so I like adult content. If it goes too far, I can let the DM know.
Yurp.
Is there a new class?
UA class but yes
yep, likely to be reprinted with the Dark Sun stuff assuming we get it
Yes and No
Its still UA
Oh cool
it's still UA and it's technically a rework of a class from an older edition
I hope it gets released
I'm gonna play a Metamorph one lol
metamorph looked sick
Body horror my beloved
they mind ready one was cool too
How dare you show your face in front of me, imposter?
Would psion be the first new class since artificer?
For 5e that's official?
Yes.
I think is a fairly safe prediction that we are going to see psion released this year
lol I’m a doppelganger
The fated nesting of the alleys
well, artificer was also a rehash of older content, technically they'd both be rereleases but psion doesn't have an existant 2014 printing so it'd at least be new for 5e
I think it's an interesting idea, but i feel that would be hard to support realistically, and would probably need to just be a new edition in general, so we can have a better base chassis
I’m not a cat though. I’m actually a tressym
I meant the first new class since artificer came out in 3.5
Side tangent:
If i have to argue with one more person about blood hunter NOT being official, my brain cells are gonna implode
The Psion is interesting. I'm a little disappointed they are leaning into spell casting and not coming up with new psionic abilities, but I think that's how psioncs always were (I didn't play older editions).
Random question that just came to mind, why are doppelgangers and changelings different things?
Roll initiative, you bastard. ⚔️
psion was in 2e, 3/3.5e, and 4e
Smh just when I thought there was another cat
I just wanna play with psionic powers tbh
Doppelgangers are inherently malicious monsters
Whereas Changelings just want to live among other people
Totaly fair. I think the base D&D 5E game supports neither well when you really get into it. I personally can't think of a way to design in a way that makes the gaming experience streamlined but... hey, I'm not the designer lol.
Spellcasting was the easier solution, since it's a lot of effort to make a new psionics system thats in-balance with existing casting
I can’t. I’m a cat. My paws can’t roll dice
Also, Changelings are Fey
Doppelgangers aren't lol
It's still a little weird
But that does create a interesting one-shot idea: trying to find a doppleganger in a village of changelings
Orin: Am I a joke to you?
Easy and safe, but boring and uninspiring. It's like "ohh I throw a fireball, but it's psionics".
Yes.
...Anyone looking for a gestalt?
You know what. fair
meee q_q
but you already know that
All folk who would be would be checking the LFG channels
No LFG outside the LFG channels 😉
and also there is an element of occams razor thinking to it.
If a cleric can get the ability to make miracles from a god's power, and a wizard can alter the weave to manipulate the elements, and they both use the same system of creating effects, why are mind powers any different?
If I had a Gestalt character
I'd want a Barbarian-Sorcerer
I know they clash, but damn you, I think it'd be cool.
It would be cool.
not saying you have to like it, thats just my justification for why it works
I like characters with mind-powers, they're scary
Particurally when the components of the spell are waived, I think that's super cool but I don't think psion does that at all
despite the extant "psionic" subclasses doing it
Yeah I get your point. But it just feels like flavor.
Imagine with me, of you all will
A Draconic Sorcerer Barbarian.
They're beefy because the dragon blood in their viens bulked them up
it'd honnestly be fine, just fire off a bunch of non concentration buffs prior to raging
The ultimate steroids
GOOlock ftw
Doppelgangers are not listed as having the ability to change their voices. And changelings can only turn into people that they've seen before, they can't turn into something new
It'd be so funny
I throw a spell at you
You slap me
I smash your skull into the pavement
Barberer
and it is kinda the wotc stance now that theyre treating psionics as another form of magic
I was a big fan of Psionics in 3.5E (it's part of the SRD if you're ever curious). Rather than use Vancian casting ("fire and forget"), it used psi points. As such, it was a wholly different casting system complete with its own psionic powers. In fact, things like "spell resistance" were not effective against psionic powers.
It was cool and really memorable - but it did mean that you had to support a whole different lists of powers. And as a DM, I had to get up to speed on a whole new way to cast spells. It was okay at the time, but it's definitely a higher bar than generally 5E seems to want to set.
Sorcrarian
GOOlock is my favoirte-ly themed subclass, but tragically I don't enjoy playing warlock very much ;-;
could always take the Actor feat at level 4 to cover that though
My favorite Warlock Subclass is undead :>
Yeah, but changelings already have it built in, also it affects NPCs
I multiclass it c:
15 druid / 5 warlock
it's MAD so it's a terrible build optimization wise but I have it tuned to work well enough so it's fun
A bit more: I think a major reason why I liked old 3.5E psionics is because in the fiction, psionics were "weird and new". They were supposed to be kind of poorly understood and, for many people (and even gods), a threat to magic. So a whole new system felt very fitting.
Psion was in the based editions
What's the theming on that? Using both meanings of "old god"?
there's a UA for it in 5th edition, it's likely to come out with the Apocolyptic subclasses in a Dark Suns expansion for 5e
At this point I'd be okay with learning a whole new list of powers. I'm very familiar with the game, especially since the 2024 update really didn't change anything foundationally. I'd like them to shake up the game. I started doing that with homebrew but it's not quite the same.
I would also quite like it if Psion was its own thing outside of spellcasting
It might not help that I recently joined a warhammer campaign and I think psykers are cool
Her patron is basicallay a more nature-themed inversion of Hadar; kind of the embodyment of like overgrowth and monstrous life
I can't wait for Sorcerer-King Warlock, I playtested it in a oneshot and it was gnarly for a Bladelock
Shouting at people to KNEEL! then chopping off heads was great
Very cool
I really like creepy nature vibes, and scary characters in general
I've seen people talk highly of that subclass. I've been meaning to take a closer look at it.
looks really sick
#1408165129622782214 message
From what I know of 3.5 psionics, it was very strong. It could ignore almost every downside of traditional spellcasting and it had a lot of effects that were just “this spell or item but inherently better” which could be part of the flavor on why psychics were hated and feared but i don’t know if many people would want that power imbalance in a caster
It's fun!
It's kinda like Glamor Bard, you get free bonus action Casts of Command ...
That's all It really shares in common lol
You get your powers from a Magical Tyrant
Pour some gasoline on the Martial vs Caster divide arguments. 😄
Martial vs caster becomes martial vs caster vs super caster lol
the sorcerer and the druid where my two favorites from that UA, though druid ofc is my darling and that is basically my quinitisential druid subclass
I think the Remaster has helped Martials be on steady footing
WE Need more UAs for Druid!
we need more martial druids
I'm playing spore druid in a campaign that's starting Friday :3
It's built around bonking people with Shilleleigh
it's really just Circle of the Moon right now
And Barbarian.
We need more new Barb stuff! RAGGHH
I want a Druid with Hextra attack or extra attack
give me a druid subclass that is heavily built around shillelagh
I dunno if they'll ever truly make another Martial Druid as that's Moons whole shtick, but I could be wrong, who knows
The main problem with psion in 5e (both the ua attempts and the slog homebrew like kibbles) is that 3.5 psionics introduced a new swt of mechanics that multiple classes had access to. 4e psionics were easy because every class had bespoke capabilities, and psionic was just one source of power in 5e its always the same. 35 pages of powers and augmentation for a single class that has so many choices because itnis trying to fulfill every psionic fantasy within a single class
That's what I'm trying to do!
I got 1 level in ranger for weapon mastery, hex, and armor prof., also polearm master for a "second attack", and will use stuff like conjure elementals at higher levels
Which is part of why soulknife and psi warrior are so dear to me. They give me that delicious psionic flavor withiut trying to do everything
I think a vine focused druid that moves creatures into aoes would be fun. I guess that doesn't need a whole subclass.
well the new Psion UA doesnt try to do everything either
mine takes 5 in warlock for Pact of the Blade, Improved Pact Weapon, and Thirsting Blade
She wants a vicious longbow to bind c:
Plant Focused Druid in general
its basically an INT sorcerer
I think the psionic subs and the psi caster can coexist. Just as there are magical subclasses that don’t use spells
Druid that can wildshape into plant monsters
yeah and bring back plant and elemental wildshape forms >:c
I want a more fey-focused druid
Circle of dreams exists but it's kinda just a weird subclass and also not fey themed enough
I'd honestly prefer an Elemental Druid in general
Wildshapes into a whole ass redwood
I don't think it made sense for old moon druid to wildshape into Elementals
just vibing as a tree for like 4 hours is pretty chill
Druid subclass all about bugs and you can become an Umberhulk or some shit
Druid would be much more interesting if beasts were cooler
I would be very happy about an entire book of beasts designed to be interesting and wildshape-friendly
Bugs :D
I love bugs they are very cool
Am I the only person that enjoys Umberhulks? 🤔
ooga booga
they just need a big thick dumb book of lore, random stat blocks, and just interesting but not inherently useful items
I would definitely buy that
This is my experience having played with it a lot back in the day.
Here's an example. So at level 5, a wizard can cast fireball: 5d6 (in 3.5E) in a sphere. Classic and overtuned. We love it.
At level 5, a 3.5 Psion has 25 power points and can manifest a 3rd level power. https://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/classes/psion.htm
Energy burst is available at level 5 psions and also does 5d6 in a burst. It has to be centered on you, but it's also double the radius (40 ft instead of 20 ft fireball). It costs 5 power points, meaning you could cast it up to 5 times a day (you probably wouldn't). Now, all psions can "augment" a power by spending more power points up to their level. So you can "augment" your energy burst by 5 more points. Each time you bump it, you increase the damage by 1d6.
So at level 5, your wizard is throwing 5d6 fireballs; but as a psion, you can lock in and do and throw out a 10d6 energy burst.
Circle of Entomancy
I summon a Goliath Sized Goliath Beetle
army of giant isopods
YES!
Eh, has nothing on Miniature Giant Space Hamsters. Go for the EYES, Boo! 🐹
Whatever, go forth my shrimps
I’m trying to join a Campaign, but there’s nothing interesting
I guess you could flavor Giant Insect
Which by the way, is interesting in that it now follows the same rules for the other "summon x" spells but is the only one without summon in the name
Me when i send my army of Swag bugs to kill my enemies
#find-a-game is the place here or you can look on one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store.
Swarmkeeper???
Ok thank
best ranger subclass
That or fey wanderer I think
Swarmkeeper ranger doesn't give the same vibes as summoning a plague of insects that cloud the sky.
4e also had augments on the psionic powers- where most classes had at-will, encounter, and daily powers, psionic classes didn't have encounter powers, but points they could use to augment their at-will powers into more potent versions
true, but swamkeeper
true...
Guess that's what insect plague is for
I'm making a Bugbear Gloomstalker Ranger
His name is gonna be Bogeyman 😎
Unleash a swarm of shrimp upon your enemies
Is he good at boogying?
As Shrimple as that
Shrimply devestating
for the 5e folks, encounter powers are basically short rest abilities in 5e
No, he's the stuff of nightmares
but he's also got some sick dance moves, right...?
Noh.
He's too serious for that, he's an Assassin in the Zhentarim :>
aw :(
I had an idea for a Piranhadin yesterday. Replace Divine Smite with Divine Swarm, now its magical piranha swarm consuming EVIL to restore Pally's health. And instead of Lay on Hands, now it's Swarm Sacrifice to use Pally's health to heal the target.
Good thing I have the world's only shrimpenetrable armor
Fintastic
Wait... did you just make a shrimp pun with a word other than "simple"????
I bow to your mastery of comedy
Piranha swarm but you're just throwing dead fish at them from a suspicious bag of holding
my 'at the time' level 4 valor bard level 2 warlock rolled a 29 on a performance check to dance yesterday XD
Please. Making a shrimp pun is simply shrimpossible
Ah yes, Divine Smite by smacking them with a giant dead fish
Humiliation and injury
This reminds me
Dhampir is very fun for getting silly numbers on checks
I once got like a 40-something on an athletics check on a 2014 build :)
shrimply the worst >.>

I appreciate your shrimpathetic comment
I got a cool shield because of it
It’s shrimportant to be empathetic
The shrimprophecy... has come to pass...
"imply" and "simply" become the same word under the shrimp
I will not shrimpose my will unto you
I feel as though there is a shrimposter among us
Psion UA, apocalyptic UA, and them registering the trademark on October 13, 2025 points to yes but nothing explicit yet; have to wait for the 2026 release schedule in the coming months
Then it is shrimpudent that we catch them
Were psions important in Dark Suns? I've only really heard of it through one youtube video so I don't know much
I did recognize the UA
IIRC, magic is restricted to the upper eshelons in Athas and basicaly everyone else has at least a tiny bit of psionic ability
They'll just be let off with complete shrimpunity
#1423356300208640205 message was the second UA link
#1408165129622782214 message are the other blatently Dark Sun coded subclasses, Circle of Preservation Druid is my favorite c:
Whoever permits that must be shrimpeached!
I think that would be shrimproper :(
There is much shrimperial evidence to suggest that it would be popular with the masses

Circle of Squares Druids.
I cast crab
I stand by shrimpaladin
Good thing to ask- i dont think there are any ocean based druids are there
No more shrimp, please 😭
shrimplock
You turn into a king crab
Circle of Squirrels Druid
probably as a MTG side conent booklet
Sea Druid lol
That's literally just Squirrel Girl from marvel smh
I'm sure all circle of sea druid's features can be shrimp themed somehow
->
Circle of sea druid whose main form is a lobster
My face is red from the mount of times the word shrimp has been used
They walk around pinching people
I'm gonna leave chat for a bit, I need a break from shrimp 😭
Crustaceans can be vicious little guys tbh
But I just cooked some crawdads for you
for real folks - the shrimp theme was funny but it's starting to go off like rotten seafood now
So what are folks doing D&D wise this week?
My shrimpologies...
Im seriously speculating about Druids with crustacean themes but alright
Any games you're excited for?
Campaign starting Friday :D
Also not D&D but maybe a Warhammer session Saturday
Im mostly actually curious why there isnt an ocean based druid
Nother session of Dragon Heist and likely a few AL games
There is, sea druid
Probably need a channel for off topic conversations, unless "non-dnd topics" counts?
Is that a thing?
There is, but I find it odd that they’re not used more
Ohhh its 2024
The sea has SO much fauna to use: fish alone are a very diverse group of animals
There is?
I havent looked in depth into 2024 yet
Yeah sea druids
Oh so it is
For some reason I though it had always existed
Darn they look awesome
Nope, def wasnt a thing before that i know of, unless UA had it
Had the bossfight i wanted, a demon that was holding a curse on my Paladin.
AT first attack half hp us all.
We got at least everybody down 1 time, i got 2 but in some way i pulled out 2 Nat20 and stood on my feets without problem.
In a critic moment we managed the paladin and me to kill the boss in a glory kill and won.
After that the paladin got into a Trial with some deities to retake his Oath (he is an oathbreaker) and they didnt gave it to him, but if he change his ways he might get it back.
Sadly after all that encounter one of the PC retired from the company because was too much for her. We will still in contact but she wont work with us anymore, our bard left the party (the player wanted to change of character so he did that).
I kinda stole the spotlight of the paladin pulling out that 2 nat20 in death doors and i wanted to leave him all the stars for him....
Was funny, next mission it seems we are going to get some kind of demon forge with a demon soul inside and we should not kill it....
Interesting... nothing could possibly go wrong
Yeeaaahhhh.... the player will get a Bloodhunter lycan, so the party would be now
A werewolf, a dhampir, a humanoid hippopotamus, a goblin and a half orc walk into a bar
That's fun :)
I like silly parties
I'm booked solid for sessions through too until groundhog day
yoooo, Giff mentioned
checking out dark sun since it was mentioned in a convo here, quite unique
im the half orc and now i have like 2 monster creatures, 1 hoarder of coins and a silly hipo that love his bathtub and lost the whole arc of the paladin
the hippo-person species is likely the Giff from the AAG/Spelljammer c:
love the spelljammer species
it's quite fascinating, i don't often explore settings outside of the forgotten realms but this is something
I play a plasmoid from the same source book primarially in the forgotten realms c:
and if/when Dark Sun hits, Thri-Kreen are endemic there as well
i don't think i'd run a game in this, but i could definitely homebrew something similar to it
what about a demon druid that only protects demonic nature?
idk, but seeing how my friend changed character, i might do the same in some future with mine. First get him some house, then a wife and finally retire him when he get enough money to dont worry for a long time in his life
Monday will be one players’s IRL birthday - so we’re gonna have dinner and play in person!
The actual adventure is a sewer exploration (beneath Waterdeep). They’ll fight a megepede lol.
and might get teh chance to either get to use some of the characters i hav in the list ready
hard to do unless your campaign primarally takes place in the Abyss
also demons are rather bitey
The planes of existence exist naturally
Therefore, there could be a druid that pulls on the natural forces and environment of the abyss
Throwing bricks at my players
The usual
Such a druid's powers would probably not resemble those of their material-planed druid friends though
Bricks of story right?
The only damage i ever do is emotional ❤️
otherwise players ducking under the table to avoid flying masonry
Nah i need them conscious
for now
As i always say. A good dm causes intense emotional damage
oh for sure
Hlelo Gallifrey
Such as having the players cause a vampire apocalypse
Be forced 5 years into the future
hello! I am new here and I have been doing D&D for a couple of months. But I’m still kind of new, I have a campaign that I would say is homebrew but I don’t think I’m doing a good job as a DM… Is anybody able to join a voice call so I can get into more depth of explaining my campaign?
idk i just disintegrate the barbarian
And see everyone they cared about become vampires
i’m kinda…. garbage as a dm
OOP- there’s a channel haha
Lots of channels - see #channel-guide
Yay! Everyone they love is now immortal, super strong, and can shapeshift!! :D
Exactly!
imma just copy and paste lol
you would think that the obvious trap that shoots a disintegrating beam when you try to pry off the ominous red gem would deter the barbarian within the first three disintegrates to the face
Please don't use strikethrough text - it is not read as strikethrough text by text to speech tools which some of our blind/vision impaired folks use to participate here.
Also please avoid posting single emojis/reacts/stickers not inline with text or under a post via the react feature as it can also be disruptive to folks using text to speech tools and trying to follow along with a discussion.
And now back to D&D...
So that's what that was
Glory to Lathander!
So, what is everyone favorite story in D&D?
traitors from the 2006 anthology realm of the elves
ah cool.... that's great...
huh I wonder what's people favorite D&D race?
So many... So many!!! 0_0
Dragonborn
cus Skyrim
dragonborn, dragons, half-dragons
hello I am new here 🙂
hello!
hi
huh I wonder what it's like to be a rogue that wieghs 1,800 pounds
sighs the heavyest rogue of all time :3
A centaur moment
which i created it x'D
Or a warforged, probably
huh i don't think i have warforged on character creation since i don't have the book yet.
I would greatly like a "brawler" type rogue
To allow you to sneak attack with unarmed strike, maybe grapple better
so a multi class??? rogue monk?
No I mean as in a subclass that doesn't exist :(
Sneak attack doesn't work with unarmed strikes tragically
Even though it totally should!!
How am I supposed to make a Dhampir rogue????
isn't there assassin subclass in 5e?
There is
Hello
It doesn't do anything for unarmed though :(
Indeed
but couldn't you still sneak and strike with unarmed weapons?
Chat I'm writing backstory for my necromancer wizard, and idk I need some help with something, he used to be a high elf that ran a potion shop in like a big city, but I can't find a way to explain him turning to necromancy + becoming a dhampir :/
also hello Kary
Sneak and strike, yes.
Sneak Attack, no.
No, because it needs to be a "finesse or ranged weapon"
And what Nugget said
so no splinter cell stuff
Ah thanks :)
You guys ever play solo?
sometimes
Any house rules you use to make things interesting for solo play?
kill a lot of things just to get max xp over and over until you reach level 20 as a warrior farmmer... (kill animals from eating the crops) before you reach level 10 you go to the black smith to get a mythril hoe... then you go to the mage guild and enchanted to 6 times to make it become a mythril magical weapon... then you make 1 short rest... and then to kill all demons and reach level 20... once you reach level 20 do all the main story books and all adventures.
Someone mentioned it in #non-dnd-topics a few days ago, but reposting here for this crowd. 👀
Erin Roberts has joined the D&D team as a game designer! She was an author in Radiant Citadel (I think she wrote Written in Blood).
Really excited to see the team grow!
Edit: And here's her announcement which came out on January 16th lol 🦥

I've been building an adventure in faerun, it's not quite done but I'd like to begin testing it. Is there a good server to attract a group of players to test out a new module?
The secret is, every game is a test
The lfg channel here is the busiest in the whole internet, just call it your own custom forgotten realms campaign
Were you adjust it after each session, improving it, with your pen and paper
Looking forward to being back in the dm seat on Monday
Good luck sora!
Party is almost level 5 so will be hitting t2 very quick.
hi im new
just found this too howdy
I think hes new
I need the faerun book
heroes of faerun or adventure in faerun
playe
Heroes of Faerun then probably
cool
So folks, what are yalls favourite new subclass from the Faerun book!
-# I’m just gonna pretend I didn’t see people flipping out
Roll & Play Press One Shot Wonders
Mildly late, but eh
I will just always enjoy a Bladesinger wizard. Haven't gotten to play the 2024 update yet, but it looks like a worthy successor.
I havent even looked at the 2024 rules yet. I'm hesitant since all the books I already own are balanced with the 2014 rulebook
Are these books you're looking for as a player or as a DM?
It’s released
Nah ranger is in HoF
If you're interested in DMing, I'd recommend Monsters of the Multiverse and Volo's Guide to Monsters, they're secondary monster manuals with tons of new monsters in them
hey, i was thinking of using a homebrew race thats a fish in a bowl thats controlling a robotic suit of armor/ body. is there anything like this out? if there isnt how do you normally go about making homebrew races?
I’d say that’s a heavily flavored warforged
Well, maybe just flavored.
Monsters of the Multiverse i've found to be better but VGTM is still a solid book with a solid stat block list - there's some cool stuff there from what I see
Or rather, I've used monsters of the multiverse more. But that's also because I've needed more monsters like demons etc, which it has more of.
Do Orcs have rounded ears or pointy ears?
I have a question are we allowed to ask for a DM in here?
Most of the art I’ve seen gives them pointed ears, but I don’t think Gruumsh would like if his creations looked anything like Corellon
You can make a post in #looking-for-dm, but not in this channel specifically
okay thank you
Seems to vary somewhat. Do whichever you like
The official 2024 PHB art for orcs depicts them with pointed ears
i havent played dnd in years how do i find ppl to play dnd with pls i miss it
i checked my unis society list and theres no dnd society and my flatmates dont wanna play bc its weird apparently 🙄
Oh wait no they're definitely pointy
Not as pointy as elves but defiently a little
how do I do that sorry I am very dumb
#find-a-game has breaks down how to make posts in the LFG channels, and the kind of information you should include
100% pointy
just not as long as elves
I'd honestly recommend playing with friends. If you really can't convince anyone, then I'd suggest making friends online and slowly getting into one-shots at first
Listings can be hit or miss
Obvious statement, but it helps if you're willing to be the DM
but i feel like online is so much worse
like ive only ever played in person and it was so much fun and i dont see how the same level of fun could be replicated online
Yea, I mean I personally think TTRPGs are not the kind of thing where you can just turn up and have an amazing game a lot of the time unless you're already experienced and know the "social contracts"
Some servers/communities present it like a lobby type game (like COD, etc) but in my years of experience and all my friends, we haven't had a genuine experience with random people, maybe once or twice in the local shop or uni society
Yea, you're definitely right
like if there was a society at uni id love to join n make friends w them
but my current friend group rn is more like football headed ppl like they'd much rather go play sports or something than sit around a table and play a fantasy game if that makes sense
You can still have a great experience though. But since you already know, the people massively affect the experience honestly
Online can still be fun with the right people
partially considering starting a dungeons and dragons society myself but id still need to find some ppl to start it with
It’s a matter of opinion
Personally I like online better because it’s way easier to go back and reread things
That was my entry way, I joined the uni society and eventually became DM
that's valid
like I haven't played since year 11 of school
im now in my second year of uni and rewatching stranger things is making me miss it
like why cant there be like a hellfire club and an eddie at my uni 😞
yeah im from the uk
but again in shops i feel like ppl are either gna be so much older than me or i just wont click with them as well idk
Oh, and my online sessions are a hundred times less chaotic than my real life sessions because I don’t have That Guy playing
He’s not that bad of a That Guy, but he’s playing DEADPOOL and he has the Soul Stone
Btw check "adventurer's league"
im also so socially awkward walking into a shop like that by myself and having to talk to new ppl would acc kill me but i mean i could try
🤔
Alright well, your best option is adventurer's league. Check it out online, once you learn about it you can either do it online or in person, either way that'll be the best entry for you
What's that?
Thank you so much
No problem, I highly suggest you try to approach your "debut" in a good way, like a local shop or adventurer's league, because if you try and play random online listings with people you don't know, the experience could very easily push you away for a long long time due to bad experiences
Any person here whose played for more than a couple years might know this feeling...
Hey man if it gives you any more confidence to hear this, DON'T BE SCARED.
My first couple of times in the game shop, I'd just browse around until I was comfortable with the owner. He turned out to be a pretty chill guy, so I bought a starter box to take home and check out.
Later on, I wanted to start playing MTG but didn't know anybody who did, so my only option was to buy some cards and just show up when people were there to play.
First time I went, I didn't even play, I was that freaked out.
I just kind of observed the play patterns of an actual game.
Now imagine that. From the perspective of the established players, I kinda was being a weirdo 😅 they offered me a deck so I could join in the game and I played koi and said "oh no, I'm just gonna watch...."
I probably freaked them out far more than they freaked me out on first contact.
That's on me.
I was weird about it. And they still accepted me and offered me a seat.
When I finally did show up again with my cards ready to play, thing were so relaxed because I realized my fears stemmed from my own thoughts of how others would perceive me as an outsider, and NOT from a place of reality where people would actually treat me poorly just for wanting to play a game.
it's not a biker bar, it's a game shop where people come together.
Show up, don't hide your face behind your book/tablet the entire time, and share your interests with the others so you guys can click together more quickly.
I guarantee there's somebody there who likes anime, or card games, or literally anything.
You'd be surprised who'd be at the game store, wanting to be your friend and play a game with you.
That actually does help hearing an actual similar experience thank you
I think I'll try it
I know it sounds like a dumb question but is disintegration a specific damage type or just straight up die, no save
Force damage, at least from 2014
And then if you die you turn to dust
And do you know 2024? Because that is what my DM is running off of
I meant like a beholder's disintegration ray, but i think that works
they're both force
Does resistance help?
the question was the damage type you dont even need to paste the whole spell. Do you have resistance against Force damage?
Through a certain buff
Ok sorry.
a ring of resistance is the only thing that comes to mind for a player option to resist force damage unless homebrew. otherwise resistance always works against the damage type unless something else says otherwise
Warding bond
That works
Unless "resistance against all damage" doesn't mean what it says
The bond caster takes half still. And of course it means what it says. Everything does exactly what they say
Some descriptions leave out some things
They shouldnt. many spells dont bother explaining the effects of conditions they cause because there is a glossaary for that
Like prestidigitation, it says you can't summon a weapon, not that what you summon can't enherently be dangerous
That's not 'leaving something out'
I had a whole ass argument about whether you can or can't apply what the rules/description "implies"
also the only thing you can summon is 'nonmagical trinket' which is a category of item that is explained
I see, thank you
Can you give me an example of something 'implied' rather than stated?
I finally found a serious group to play with. after like... 8 years... ill finally (hopefully) have a campaign full of competent people
casting protection from good and evil to ward off the schedule conflict demon
good news, we are all the same age and in the same grade so schedule conflicts for the most part should be consistent
Amethyst dragonborn ig?
Yea those do exist, as rare as they are
Brooch of Shielding
Armor of Resistance
Potion of Resistance
Absorbing Tattoo
Deck o Wonder
ive only ever played topaz or crystal dragonborns
I have a crystal dragonborn necromancer
could have sworn brooch was immune
The slow spell saved my life today
Had a fight with a horned devil as a level 5 party. It’s incredible what it can do to just make a monster offensively and defensively useless
well, luckily, we have the internet to check things.
but if it is immunity, even better!
The biggest danger to me was getting hit by an NPC’s fireball
unfortunately its been going to shit lately
I like dragons but not dungeons. Can I play this game?
No.
yes, you can of course play Dominos and Dungeons
Despair 😭😭
I was just not counting immunity as resistance lol
to the dungeon with you
That takes away the only element I liked
Don’t worry, we got Donuts and Donuts here
Dogs and Diamonds
Donuts, Dungeons and Dragons 🤤
you can in fact evade dungeons, but the thing is, dungeons will haunt you
Sometimes literally, if it's a Mimic Dungeon 👀
welp, there is mimic caves if im not wrong, idk if such creature can be bigger like some big building.
Mimic ships would be neat to see in some sort of pirate setting. A bond between a crew and a mimic ship
There is in fact a known Mimic Ship crewed by Mimic Pirates.
mimic pirates werent my goal but i guess it work
Even mimics like to adventure sometimes

Oh yeah, the mimic knight with the ranger that is 3 kobolds in a trenchcoat, the cleric that in reality is a warlock and finally the elf berserker
OH and i forgot the Goliath that is a Wizard
Sounds like an average party to me
Nah, he forgot the orphan thief with edgy backstory
i actually have a warlock masquerading as a wizard right now!
My Warlock is a Warlock
My monk is a monk
my rogue is a rogue
the party and her think her magic comes from patterns intrinsic to the universe, synchronized in such a way to impress an effect into the world from The Weave, but she is actually worshipping an old deity and neither her nor her people know they are worshipping this ancient deity or performing its rituals
this warlock thinks she's a wizard but is actually a fighter warlock multiclass
My rangers a rogue
My rogue is an acrobat.
My Rogue is a Cat
my wife was a tiefling
One of my Sorcerer concepts is that he's a descendant of a bloodline which had been turned into the phylactery of a powerful lich who was sealed away in a demi-plane long ago.
The idea is that at some point the lich will have discovered a way to slowly extend his influence past the bounds of the demi-plane and begin trying to use the Sorcerer as a host to return to life.
Phylactery?
Idk the spelling.
Phylactery
Thx
Honestly the reason I picked gloomstalker right here
Real, I always wanted to play a tabaxi. Might make a “lawful good” Druid (messed up place that is objectively evil) be a tabaxi or a drow
A cat that wildshapes into a druid
If only dnd beyond let me be gloomstalker. Got stuck to Hunter
They probably don't have the book with Gloomstalker
Yeah, probably. Might another day. Just bought Mordenkainen presents monsters of the multiverse
NICE
Came today actually
there's some dope stuff in there also some really cool items iirc
Since people in real life sometimes close one eye to aim better, should only having one eye not give Disadvantage on Ranged Attacks?
Hyped to look through all its stuff
Depends on the eye
You could make that argument, you could also argue that only having one eye impacts your depth perception
I don't think it gives disadvantage lol
In terms of the game I think it depends on the class. Giving a ranger disadvantage on ranged attacks would be rough
Could be a fun idea for an NPC to have or if the player likes the idea for their character
It's hard too bc I feel like once you establish that's how it works, that's how it works
Thatd be absolutely evil
I would say yes to it if like a player came to me with that idea of like "my one eyed barbarian dwarf wants to try and use a bow this one time" i might pitch the idea to them
Anyone know of a VTT discord bot that can be used on mobile?
I think it's character specific
Honestly a character with one eye who is really good with a bow is rad
Not i, sorry
welp, there can be some Risk bennefit idea
Might have one less eye making all ranged attacks in disadvantage but it have a 1d8 if it hit for being so skilled with it or smt.
god i wanna play dnd with a group so bad but its scary to join people that seem so serious about the game, specially considering i dont know much qwp
read the rules, and determine if a prospective table has also read the rules
that'll give you your best odds
there isnt too much "serious" sometimes, you can always have a session 0 or test session with someone group or Dm and then you see how things go
and if you dont try, how you will find a group to enjoy this funny game?
You wont burn the ships if you try so, dont worry too much too
i guess thats fair, idk, i might just be anxious of trying out something like that with people that dont know me
Hello im landon, im newer to dnd and me and my friend wants a small group to learn he complete beginner but would love to learn also need someone who can DM
that is the same for them and its totally okey, go slowly and steady buddy.
I guess your biggest fear must be roleplay but remember, everybody is there for fun. there is no pressure.
Go slowly, steady and nice. Dont overthink and finally enjoy a good fantasy adventure with some people that might turn into friends for future adventures
good, if you have any questions in any thing #dnd-newcomers place will give you the best help possible and for the DM you can try in #looking-for-dm too, there you can might find a DM that fit in your times, style and other stuff. Would recommend like a Test for both sides.
A simple oneshot
Thx you!!
and please, both sides. Read your stuff.
What bard subclass would compliment another player playing a zealot barbarian?
2014 or 24?
Dance or Moon prolly. The increased movement potential of Dance is going to make you the Zealot's (who sacs movement for damage and tankiness) best friend
Whereas the healing of Moon Bard is going to come in handy as barbarians get hit alot
If you think roleplaying with strangers is scary you might wanna join a text based game, truthfully it's not as fun as a normal game, but I struggle with social anxiety so that's how I play
it’s not that i’m afraid of people, it’s more the fear of messing up/being judged cuz im new
2014
oh I see, well most people I know are very kind and love teaching new players stuff. If people are judgemental they probably wouldn't be fun to play with either way
Hey there all
Hello yellow
Greetings , kirk
Don't call me that
ah in that case...lore bard should supplement them well.
My bad
No worries bestie
Aight well anywhos
Party of level 3s...just had a bunch (5) bearded devils emerge from portals and are coming towards us...are we in trouble lol
Bearded devils???
Arent those really strong
How many people in the party? What classes?
hai
Yello
Stay out of range and shoot it with longbows
No way, lime scout its you
i think ima play homebrew dnd with my gf and her family
im dm cos apparently nobody wants to be dm
slight issue: idk how dnd works (i only seen it on the advantis youtube thingy)
Yes im lime scout from tf2
Dont fall into the trap of forever dm
but it does sound cool to frick them over in a funny way
You’re fine at ranged pretty much. You’re double fine if you’re full or near full on all your resources
I wouldn’t recommend homebrewing stuff as a newbie, unless you mean a custom setting
or i can do succession game
where other person becomes dm and they only see what is avaliable and just makes up stuff
Whoa man your an artificer main?
hmm i see
Teach me your ways, please do
Hello, friends :>
Yello
How do we feel about amnesiac characters
They can be okay, I do think its a subject that should be handled with care
Im not a fan personally, save few exceptions
depend if the player//Dm use it properly for the plot or some arc
There is always the "i dont want to write a story so my character have amnesia", heard it a pair of times.
Not so... "good" idea
Can be potentially fun, depending on how much freedom I have to work with as the DM, but it is kind of a lazy option from a player side 😛
Agreed
They def need something between start of campaign and being amnesiac at least
if you use it to dodge writing a backstory, thats lazy but if everyone is fine with it then why not
if you do it for an actual backstory, thats fine but an overdone trope so be careful not to put it on too thick or people will eyeroll
Like, i wont deny, i would prefer a PC that is " i want to restart in my life so i burned my past and even changed my name" and in some plot moment you get some of that past haunt that PC.
Oh definitely. Interesting personality or some kind of background between at the very least
just worth remembering its an often casual homegame activity done as play
Artificer is one of those classes that seems more complicated than it is. It’s really fun being able to guarantee yourself magic items
Or just the character have a not so good past and want to hide it, that is more interesting.
Or dont hide it but make it sound so hilarious that no one trust it.
"Yeah, im a cleric but before i was in a cult. After summoning a demon and.... some stuff happened i wanted to change my ways"
And in some future the party found that demon he had "past" and say "hello darling" and no one expect the cleric being who is talking to
I played artificer for my first time in dnd, I liked it
Depend giga too much of teh subclass, one is offensive, another is utility in general, another is more tankish
I saw myself out because I got the assumption artificer isnt liked at most tables
In the end of the day dont change that is kinda supportish class too
Also trying to try new stuff
did you play it as a techy?
Just gotta fit the tech level of the world
thats the usual trope that leads to people either hating or loving it
What do you mean by that?
too modern for the usually very medieval europe setting
In my medieval fantasy world, i make guy with mechs
Obviously I didnt make a glock 9 at level 1, i hated that stereotype
Or threaten to make a nuke
same thing as warforged players being known to be divisive
both attract character concepts that are way out of place in many games
Nope
It’s important to try and fit the magic level/science level of the setting
suddenly you have legolas and aragorn rolling up with r2d2
isnt that needed too. You can be tricky with the most medieval tech.
Can make literally tons of bombs in many ways, traps, mechanisms.
Just getting access to springs make you be x10 more dangerous
A lot of people wrongly stereotype Artificer as a high tech or steampunky class
which it isnt at all
but then the DM can make springs hard to make or get and then you have a way to balance it
Amen
But im trying other stuff im trying fighter now
but its grown legs so now people actively make warforged or artis super techy from time to time, and those then either clash with the game or people love them
Like for me, i allow guns
But guns are basically magic tools which use base cantrips to fire bullets
I would like that arti be able to like, take out an effect in some weapons and then transfer it to another. So it kinda justify my hoarding
Ie. control water to increase water pressure, then releasing it to shoot fast
Thats what my dm did
considering control water cant deal damage, i doubt it can build up enough pressure for any gun
if there is blackpowder, you can put a blackpowder bomb inside of a pouch with caltrops and then you have a really dangerous bomb
or just make fire bombs with some clay and oils
Id argue if you got a magic item constantly casting it, youd be fine
pepper bottles for blind enemies, etc. etc. All depending of how creative you can be and the DM let you
dangerous path
But thats dm dependent st the end of the day
What’s important is having it be plausible in the world your character is in
but perce, the magic items the Arti can make are already giga good
and infussions help a lot.
Repeating shot, magic weapons//armors
Real
Armors pieces that help with ltos of saves or let you use some sort of spells, like this boots that let you do misty step
hi im new here
Hello I am new too
hi
Hello nercury, what got you into dnd?
7th grade and then just kept going from there
Oh that’s really great keep up Kier
you?
Anyone know of a VTT discord app that also works on mobile? I love the mini kraken one but it doesn't work on mobile
@devout grail @sage adder
Welcome friends!
#learn-to-play is a good place to start!
I played a lot of dragon quest so naturally I’ll be here
Welcome :>
Roll20 is launching mobile version soon
Thank you goats, any idea when?
approximately
Not sure. Can't find the info where they said it was a focus now
Think I found it, seems to be in like 15 hours #1224916068988878970 message
So, very soon
Though that says in browser :/
do any of you have experience on evil alignments roleplayed well in a mostly good aligned party?
Not really
I imagine lawful evil could work if they have the same goal as the party,
or neutral
In the group I'm running, we have a LE character in a mostly-good aligned party. I was clear that he needed to have reasons for his character to get along, and being evil in this setting doesn't preclude one from employment automatically.
I don't think that most of the party even knows he's 'evil'.
The evil character I created is a k*d and he control sea monsters lol
scylla?
Its tough, but it depends on what your evil characters goals are
My “evil” character was just someone hell bent on revenge, and was willing to use anyone and anything to get it
Led to some good rp with the party and a close bond eventually, my guy turning more neutral
I only tried it twice before, once in LMOP as a weird hobgoblin who was with the party against one of the big bads, and as an ogre in icewind dale. The former went well as it became a redemption story. My idea was for the latter to be one too but it turned out my party was way more evil than I was lmao.
I have been asked by one of my players for our new CoS game if an evil drow would be fine and I am not sure on how to go ahead with it
I finally got the opportunity to learn and play 3 Dragon Ante today. I had a blast and will be incorporated this in to my game I am running as a down time activity. I will let my players use there in game gold for the game. I had fun and laughed at the craziness of the game.
Aww man I thought I was orginal enough
I have the game as well I need to learn it for my game I as a DM played a chess game with my player when he wanted to go agnest a npc with dragonchess
Also my players like to do rock paper sizers with a d3
Haha no it's okay, everything is similar to something
There are no original thoughts
I guess I can changed the gender a bit
I mean, just make what you want and dont care if its not original
yeah
I currently have a player who is playing an LE character. The rest of the party does not know his alignment. We had a discussion before we started playing this campaign. I laid some ground rules and made sure that if he did something that would break the law that there would be consquences if caught. I usually don't let evil characters in my game. That being said I once played in a game back in the day where I was the LG Paladin and our wizard was LE. we made it work and both of us had fun. It would depend on the player how well I know him meaning what kind of a player he is before I would let an evil player in my game. It can be done just make sure there are ground rules in place.
My NE warforged wizard doesn't understand humanity
So far I've cut up the dead in front of the party, almost killed a orphan, and my favorite Fed a guy his dead horses meat
I got a Question for you guys. Since copying spells from one spell book to another takes time and money. If you guys were to become a litch with immortality. How long would you keep a spell book before you changed your mind about the color, and copied it to a different style book?
I'm very sentimental about objects and anything I collect I put my personality into. And I never regret anything.
So never. changing spellbook would be like the upmost evil I could possibly do
Imagine having so weak of a spine that you discard a book you've been keeping for years based on the colour! Every stroke in that book is a piece of myself that I will not get rid of
You'll regret changing your spellbook mark my words!
Yes, my minecraft world is 15 years old, and my animal crossing island is immaculate.
what feats should I take for my 2014 swords bard satyr?
Ability score increase 😎
Honestly, yeah…. There arent exactly good feats
Maybe magic initiate to get booming blade?
That plus mobile flourish is pretty great
Though when you get extra attack it gets a bit scuff
if I take moblile I could have 55 feet of movement when I use a flourish
also technically it doesn’t work
I mean yeah, but 55 movement feet for what?
should I take fey touched?
Its not a bad choice for sure but only if you need the movement
Though, mobile is better
Also you misunderstand
You get that +10 movement feet if you take the attack action, flourish or not
The mobile feat
Satyr is 35 + 10 (mobile) + 10 (flourish)
It’s useful. Mental ASI boost, Free Misty step without slot once a day and a 1rst level spell with the same. Also can work with spell slots afterwards.
Yeah, i was just saying you dont need to use a flourish
Ohh ok
Helps you stay versatile. Plus Misty step helps breaks some grapples and retrains
You just need to attack someone to get that +10 movement speed from flourish
Just whenever i attack
Both mobile and fey touch imo are equal
No opportunity attacks and movement as a permanent passive
VS
More versatility but limited usage
or just take both
I mean the ASI’s are really good
Especially for a swords bard who needs
Dex, con, charisma
Warcaster > Fey Touched > ASI > Mobile > Skill Expert?
Your base stats are gonna suffer a bit still
what order do you reccomend?
Id just drop fey touched personally
Most of the spells besides misty step you get by being a bard
And a one use misty step is meh, you have other ways of getting out of a grapel
actualy, i'm not dual wielding so I might not need warcaster?
Yeah Swords Bard is pretty M.A.D.
Magic initiate + booming blade
And warcaster if you gotta
The advantage on concentration saves is really good
Being able to reaction attack with booming blade would be huge
Wanna be even more evil?
Take sentinel, magic initiate(for booming blade) and warcaster
You really want it
ok
booming blade and sentinel dont work together
what order of feats would you reccomend
Because the reaction attack is great damage or control
Also War Caster gives advantage on concentration which is very important
Ah shoot didnt know
It’s definitely not bad imo, but it faces what all melee spellcaster s face
I might take mobile though, just for speed build. Because I like it.
The fact that bladesinger is better in every way
It’s no Rogue, Fighter, or pretty much every other Bard subclass because those guys have more fear potential.
But realistically, its trying to do melee stuff and spells
Without them being combined at all
Best way to play is to find a good spell to concentrate on (heat metal, charm person, etc) and then melee attack the rest, using flourishes for defensive purposes
The mobile feats great for that
Eldritch Knight, Arcane trickster, Battle Smith, Paladin, and Rangers likely do the Gish builds best
Without going too M.A.D. At least
Wild magic sorcerer
Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster got more ASIs than all the other classes.
Battlesmith just needs Int and a bit of Con.
Ranger has a lot of spells that ignore Wisdom
Paladin can get away with a lot with their Aura being super defensive.
Paladin does gish better than the others
But warlock also can gish build pretty strong
Arcane tricksters great but it falls into the rogue issue of “you miss one attack and your turns basically over”
But thats a personal peeve of mine playing rogue
As opposed to Warlock, Paladin, Battlesmith, and Rangers “you miss two attacks turn is over”
Meanwhile Fighter just gots attacks for days.
Yes
The best way to play is the way that the player enjoys most
Also, warlocks and paladins get a bonus action where they can cast spells
Agreed, shoulda put “optimal” way to play
Rogues just sora do their one single thing and then its over
Like bonus action dash/hide/disengage for great positioning
Besides dashing, disengaging, hiding, (for Trickster) mage hand, and wizard spell foolery with the right choice
Yeah but mage hand tomfoolery is very dm dependent i find
Limitations of a mage hand are many
Rogue in general is campaign dependent since they excel outside of combat more so than inside
Or attempt to get 2 sneak attacks per round
RAW you cannot get the benefit of sneak attack twice on the same turn
Has to either be an opportunity attack or hold action attack with haste
I assume that's why Herambe said round instead of turn.
Yeah but they also replied to the bonus action talking point, so I wasn’t sure
Ah, gotcha
I agree with the above five messages
hii whats going on?
Whatever you want to be going on
You've entered a fresh chat, if there's no messages in 10 min what you have is a blank canvas
what book should i buy next as a player i currently own Players hand book, monsters of the multiverse and tashas couldren
im thinking of buying ravenloft
Would a bardiche count as a halberd or a glaive? As far as I could tell, the only difference between the two types are their Mastery Properties.
Which players handbook?
Glaive imo
5.5e
Xanathars is the next must have corebook if you want more subclasses... Though like Tasha's it's somewhat out of date
Heroes of Faerun
Otherwise the recent Faerun Player guide or Eberron guide both have important player options compatible with 5.5e
I'd discourage Ravenloft as D&D is going to release a 2024 Ravenloft book as their next release
So you should hold off so you can make sure you get the most up to date options 😀
Id say Faerun is your best option though Eberron has the Artificer which is a pretty big deal
thx u
Spelljammer
I think it's facinating, personally
Even if you don't use it as-is at face value, it can be an interesting starting point if you wanna do your own multiverse concept. Butcher its contents up as you please to assemble your own thing - but that could be said of any non-core book tbh
Someone a thousand years ago, before computers were a thing, could’ve been talented at using IT
Is IT an acronym for something, or are we talking about the Stephen King book with the clown
For all we know the man who could cure cancer was already born but died because he was born in the wrong time
or into the wrong tax bracket, if we're getting into it
Is there any official list of WoTC published 5e material?
It's easy to find the books, but the more I search the more I find rabbit holes if PDFs and D&D Beyond Exclusives and random blog posts with official content from the early days.
There's seriously so much official 5e content, has anybody tracked it all?
I've found a few lists online but it usually takes me like 8 seconds to see that they are missing something
This is the same system where we have to consult dev-answered questions in a compiled sage advice compendium
Organizing information coherently is not a strong suit
I'm not saying the list doesn't exist, but I am saying I'm not surprised you have trouble finding it...
But yeah Spelljammer is my genuine suggestion
Probably a reddit post somewhere and even then
I have searched and delved. I don't think there is one 🤣
I did see the famous thread that comes up on google before the creator removed the spreadsheet... But it was far from complete unfortunately 🥲
yeah its easy to find all the official printed books
but then you got the ddb only exclusives and other stuff
Like the ddb sequel adventures for Dragon of Icespire Peak, the little ddb exclusives that came with the FR bundle
Or woman for that matter, or someone of the wrong skin color to have access to the correct tools.
Yep
Those poor tieflings...
Only good tiefling is a dead one
Even if they could have cured cancer? For shame
Yes
Maybe we can refrain from the fantasy racism?
I agree with the mod here: #dnd-discussion message
Every time I make a character, I have to refrain from making another Tiefling, the urge just hits hard
What keeps you from making an orc besides - well, how much do you enjoy playing martials?
Iirc they're stuck with +2 Str as their main racial stat buff, barring GM allowed homebrew
Current rules don't have ASI's associated with species, but with Background.
And they started phasing out species ASI in Tashas with custom origin and species becoming pick your own stats
And even before the 2024 update, there was the Tasha's optional rule of being able to assign ASI freely, no homebrew necessary.
Also Tasha's allows you to apply your ASI anywhere
Haye
I guess it's a question of what tables @reef tundra is usually playing at
Hive mind being hivey.
My usual species hilariously enough is human
I usually assume 5e2014 rules with minimal variants unless otherwise told
oh😲
Considering I'll often state the community's tendency to pick from one of 4 species
Human, Elf, Tiefling, Dwarf.
+2/+1 being strictly tied to species sounds awful, i would never force that upon anyone tbh
haha lol
Which human, lmao
I’m usually the dungeon master, I’ve only been a player at two tables and both are story first with combat complimenting the plot
its definitely why there are #84237942804 dragonborn paladins
How are you all
So far the only species I have repeated playing is Forest Gnome.
I play '24 humans a lot due to the feat and daily inspiration.
My boots in the ground experience is that people stick with the old stuff due to it having more video guide content
I try to teach the new stuff of course, but to variable success
This might be a weird question, but is it possible to play a character made out of rock, who punches things?
Earth Genasi Monk
Nice because of Blade Ward.
A very weird warforged can also work
They're more earthy human than rock golem, but if you wanna be Ben Grimm-lite it can work nicely
That's exactly who I was of thinking with the idea.
How many barb subclasses have innate unarmed benifits? Iirc there was just the one with partial shapeshifting in legacy 5e
The only Barb I like with unarmed currently is Beast.
Is that the only-only one
Beast Barb is not considered Legacy.
It is still current.
I played a Beast Barb as a wuxia style martial artist using martial techniques instead of shapeshifting. It was Eagle Claw Style instead of actual claws. It worked pretty great, actually.
Legacy is my shorthand for "this was in 5e2014, even if it was also copied into 5e2024"
Sorry for not clarifying
Right, but Beast was not copied into '24 yet.
So it's """current"""
You're totally correct about what "Legacy" means, but Beast is not that, yet.
It is 100% currently legal.
Legal to use and current are distinct in my mind but maybe that's just the logic-based autism acting up aha
It is both.
I love paradoxes, this system is full of them /j
The 2024 update is still the same edition, it's just a patch.
Are we allowed to call it 5.5e or is that forbidden
You can call it that, but it's unofficial.
If people get what I mean when I say it, it's good enough for me lol
5.5e or 5e 2024
My personal unofficial moniker is Fifth Edition Revised, or 5ER.
Sometimes it confuses people and invokes unhelpful comparisons. For example, 2024 isn't like 3.5e was to 3e.
The term 5.5e also never shows up in official books.
Nanami profile pic, immediate respect
But officially it's just 5E.
I recently went to the theater to see that movie, but it was kind of disappointing. But anyway, that's off topic.
On reddit and other large communities of discussion, like old-old forums proper, 5.5e has been accepted into the (yes, unofficiall) community lexicon.
Beast Barb is the easiest barbarian to do unarmed fighting.
