I did that last night in my vecna game with a skill check
My Sleight of Hand bonus is so high that any RAW check for it autopasses
Yeah happened to me once. I was spying on a party member, who tried to find my character. DM said "Even if he rolls a 1 and you roll a 20, it won't be enough. His stealth is just too high"
+20 on SoH as a rogue is hilarious
Just guaranteed 30
And in 3 levels it's a guaranteed 32
Bro looks at vecna and his eye and hand just magically appear in his hands
Gotta love rogues
And it's gonna get a lot worse in 3 levels
Which sub?
Scion of the Dead Three, cause scion capstone turns all rolls on sneak attack to at least a 3 if they're a 1 or 2
Oh?
Guaranteed 30 damage at max sneak attack die
60 on a crit.
And that's assuming you're rolling all 1s and 2s
What level is this 0-0
Level 17 is when you get it which is when sneak attack is 9d6 so little less but still
Also the teleport so you can sometimes sneak attack twice per round
When I’m looking through the 2024 monster manual I noticed that the names for attacks are much more flavourful than in 2014. 2014 had generic names like a type of weapon or slam and 2024 has additional descriptors that add how the attack looks like. Don’t you agree?
Yeah, I like the new MM
New MM > Old MM
My Tuesday dm when I tell him Vecna takes another 100 damage on my reaction attack:
It kept it simple. Good but too simple for me. But it did a good job updating creatures
new mm is better but i prefer 2014 rules
I don't use anything from the old rules personally
I feel bad for the next enemy I crit with my rogues dagger
Me looking at my Tuesday dm when I tell him wacky woo-hoo barovia man takes 18d6 damage.
D3 Rogue sounds pretty nasty.
Only thing I would like is maybe grappling rules from 2014, some subclasses, the conjure spells, and thats it
Do additional on-hit effects being applied without saving throw make the game a lot more brutal or not?
If I was a dm, I think i'd run 2014 rules with new MM
Sort of.
Ooh boy not me, the Grappling changes in 2024 are my favorite of the changes.
D3 Rogue is... okay
Yes and that's good
I like the idea of being able to add athletics to it
It challenges players better
do ya all know what a gammoth is out of curiosity
I think they really helped monk, but did hurt barbarian a little
Aren’t the old conjure spells a pain for the DM?
I like grappling being more for what makes sense imo
The changes make the whole thing make more sense and balance things to the right classes and characters.
Only if the player doesn't know how to use them really
That's where you make the players work for it. Or you do the work yourself.
I honestly don't think so?
Eh, just slow players, and tbh, one of my favorite subclasses of my favorite class is Shepherd Druid, a sub that doesnt work in 2024
For me things like charmed applied this way feel weird to me
Yeah, no Rogues being better grapplers than barbarians
imagine monster hunter monsters in DnD
Didn't it get buffed?
No, it kind of broke.
Somewhat, but also no
Nah it has some features that don't function with the current rules
I think they mean that new conjure spells don’t actually summon
Conjuring 8+ animals is just stupidly good in combat
does no one here know what monster hunter is
Tons of bodies
Nope, you are correct
Also you'd have players who can barely handle their own sheet using it then taking like 10 years to do 1 turn
Having played with a Druid who did that, it bogged combat down. Even with a good player and a DM who was helping.
I mean, you get '14 summons AND '24 Conjure Animals.
can u call animals as a druid?
To turn combat into a slog, yes 😂
There is a Third Party (thus not official) class named that, but officially there is the Monster Slayer Ranger subclass.
have u heard of the monster hunter games by chance?
monster hunter wilds
monster hunter world?
Yes, I've watched people play it.
Grind for the Wyvern Gem with a Hunting Horn and three othe players or a Palico...
ye i was thinking imagine that x DnD
Houserules that helped that I've always played with: immediately after your turn (reasoning 1. They all do stuff at the same time, great. 2. Doesn't give choice paralysis from different scenarios each turn.), and 2. They all do the same thing if able
gib me ur stupid gem
There is Third Party book called Heliana's Guide to Monster Hunting that basically changes the game to be more like Monster Hunter.
how?
Don't haver to imagine it, I'm playing in a campaign that uses it. It's fun.
Summons don't work with shepherd druid. They don't have hit dice, so they dont benefit from Mighty Summoner, and almost all monsters got rid of nonmagical BPS resistance, so mighty summoner doesnt work
Does it? Cause it appears you summon creatures still
let me innn(plesioth)
Whole new subsystems about tracking, hunting, fighting, harvesting, and crafting from monsters.
I suppose I was more talking about its capstone. As for the rest of the feeatures.... there's still Summon Spells yeah?
Got some of my turns done in a minute and a half, only 30 seconds needed for the animals, I was more tactical
ooh whats the hunting like
While '24 Conjure Animals no longer summons, Shepherds Capstone feature does.
The new summon spells don't use hit die and also there's no non-magical damage anymore so that parts useless
also are there mages? ** ophi** ?
Yea, so 14th level and 6th level don't work, and with only 1 summon, the totems and 10th level are a lot weaker
Yeah since new Conjure Animals is more of a mobile spirit guardians
guys is there a difference between conjuring and summoning?
Instead of several individual animals, you're conjuring basically a stampede that runs around running people over
It casts conjure animals, and says it summons the 4 animals of CR 2, but conjure animals doesnt do that in 2024
like one is calling animals and the other is creation?
quick question for everyone in the chat, what is your guys favorite spellcasting class (including half-casters and subclasses that make you half-casters)
Ish? Different spells, but just the same thing
I'm saying, using Shepherd Druid uses the '24 Conjure Animals AND summons with its own feature
i wanna say druid or sorcerer but i love both
let mme pick druid for now
Correct
so is there no vocabulary difference between the two? #dnd-discussion message
But '24 conjure animals doesn't function the same
It doesn't need to function the same. Because the capstone summons their own
as in the player has less control over them?
Technically, no. Just minor differences in the spells' structure
In 2014 they were several animals put on the field
All with their own actions, hp ect.
I got a stupid worldbuilding idea...
Actually, thats a good point, and I would love to agree, would you mind us going to rules, because I would actually like this to be found out
In 2024 they're basically a stampede of animal spirits that just runs around doing damage based on where you tell them to go
Shoot
Totally will
I'm thinking about playing a druid I made with a custom subclass for my next game, but it's in competition with my bloodhunter and paladin
The stupidest in fact. What if Orcus had a collection of undead kingdoms? Meaning that sometimes Orcus creates a curse on a kingdom so that when that kingdom falls, its inhabitants and their souls are collected, dragged into the abyss, turned undead, and frozen.
so whats different now
I really like druids but I always had trouble finding a subclass I really liked
Ah I get what Shye means now
What do you like?
Because some stuff can be easily reflavored
Still the level 6 feature is completely useless in 2024 so that would need a homebrew change
You could have collections. A Yuan-Ti kingdom that fell to a plague inside Orcus' vault, all turned into skeletal snakes. Stone giants who fell to dragon fire. Dwarves who lost their fortress in a brutal war against orcs or elves and who fought till the last one fell. All eternally deathless, frozen at the moment their culture and civilization died. And sometimes Orcus wakes them up and lets them try to claim back their fallen lands
Summon Fey and Summon Animal still summons a creature
Yes but there's no non-magical damage anymore and summon spells don't use hit die
Tbh, I think it will resolve to a specific vs general, unless it specifies that it uses the 4 animals option, because that means it is needing the spell as that
So the level 6 feature does nothing in 2024
I went for a darker/more vegeance themed druid...this one takes a "nightmare form" though and is actually designed around fighting up in the front though
Can I get some volunteers for my next dnd campaign?
Ah, true..
So what I'd do is change it to your summon can choose to do force damage (like the monk change) and your Druid level or twice druid level to their hp maybe
post in #looking-for-players
Thank you
Ah, Shye, you were correct, and I happily agree with this
@humble cairn r u here
Or maybe you can add your Wis mod to your summons AC
Oh wisdom, thats interesting
Just spitballing in the area of how to replace their survivability buff
Or add HP equal to your druid level or 2x that? I don't remember the average amount of hit dice for the animals
That's the thing new summons dont use hit die
I think the unicorn and bear should be reworked and tweaked too
Which is why I'm contemplating how to fix their useless feature in 2024 rules (level 6 that relies on Nonmagical BPS existing and hit dice)
Bear should help on grappling and str saves, thats all it was really used for
Yea, so use your druid level instead
Yeah but i meant more so like feature wise...I know I could reflavor stuff and just play like a circle of the moon druid but I was trying to think of something more fun...but I already made my homebrew subclass so its fine
I'm just trying to give a balanced increase thats a bit better and '14 hp increase because we are stuck to 1 summon
Spores druid works
Spores is a more Frontline ish druid
it could, but It wasn't really working for me
If you want to look at my homebrew subclass you can, i think its fun
it might be slightly overtuned, but I just wanted to make sure I added some fun rp features because I think a lot of subclasses focus on just combat capability
Summon Beast and Summon Fey.
Same thing, they don't have hit dice, it gives 2 hp for each hit dice
Summons have set up based on spell level
losing a familiar is painful
Oh right
Very, but some just don't care
Hey
People get emotional over their unkillable and summonable animal dying? That's kinda strange to me.
Eh. Folks can get attached to things, even virtual or imaginary things.
I think it adds character, especially from Caleb from CR
I mean I understand getting attached to virtual pets. Familiars never felt like proper pets to me. But that's not my point. Familiars can't really die.
The creature is still a spirit with thoughts feelings and a personality.. fae fiend or celestial.
Often they help the caster a great deal so I get why people feel connected or less callous about them
So real, I act non chalant when the creature that I chose to have tragically dies right infront of me even though I can technically just revive him
Hey. Doggies are cute tho 🥺
some players will unironically get more emotionally shattered when they realize they have to spend gold to revive their familar over watching their familar die
I don't even like the find familiar spell. I'm sure it's a useful tool but it never felt like something fun. Then again I have never used the spell that many times.
?
bro's favorite class is barbarian
me run in, me swing, me kill
I actually like wizards. I just never feel compelled to choose that spell.
I don't choose find familar because I like other spells more
If someone doesn't answer, you can safely assume they are busy doing something else. The monster hunting is a big and somewhat complex system that rewards you for investing in a variety of skills. Its a bit of a learning curve, not something I would recommend for someone who is just learning the base system.
imposter
right sorry.
is there mages in monster hunter though and have u had any funny moments iwth it
Why am I an imposter ?
Remember that "Mage" is not really a super defined term in D&D. It's not a class. But yes there are plenty of things for casters to do in Heliana's Guide.
I'm actually going to play a chain warlock. But her pet is going to be an imp.
because me and u are shark but i here first owo (dw this is joke)
funny moments?
Oh 😂😂 I was a duck but now I’m a shark
I mean there have been funny moments in my campaign, yes.
What's your must have spell for a first level wizard?
False life
Identify
that temporal hp give you some "safety"
can u tell more please(go in detail)?
Mage armor. Anything else I choose depends on the kind of wizard I want to play.
100gp pearl, not so accesible at first level
I honestly don't have the mental energy at the moment to do a whole #tales-from-the-table story.
Interesting, do you prefer False Life to Mage Armour?
I spent the rest of my gold on it
Some DMs might be willing to let you start with the pearl.
I mean you can have it in your spellbook 😛
okay sorry
False life can be used on you or an ally
Mage armor only on you and depend of your dext too but isnt a bad option
Mage armor can be cast on an ally.
yeah, but unless the dm is nice and idk "oh look, in that beach you found a pearl" sort of thing
Mage Armor can be cast on allies.
or you decide to be in a loincloth and have a pearl
Oh, I was too slow.
rolled low initiative, it happen
but yeah, survival at first levels is more important for me than offensive
Utility help, like always
I think my players will generally acquire around 100gp by level 2 🤔
They're supposed to find a hoard once per session which is insane, so that's 500gp first session if you play RAW
whats a hoard? Laterbot?
Actually not exactly, because the hoard explicitly doesn't just contain coins
I cant tell because if i summ all the gold i got in my principal session, i would be around the 400gp or 500 max
and im in like, the session n12 and level 6
Check out the 2024 DMG Chapter 4: Adventure Rewards
It's basically just a bunch of treasure adventures should get
can i feed u feedback
I would say they should get it after each complete arc, like finishing a dungeon so my players would be closer to every other session and sometimes a big gap
a pile of stuff, dragons tend to have "hoards" of stuff, gold, metal, idk....other stuffs
i still remember frieren only being allowed to take 3 items
Sure? 😅
that at the same time can be mistaken by a hoard of frogs, would be funny that in the end of a dungeon there is a whole garden full of frogs and htat is teh "hoard" of that dungeon
i think ur idea of after every complete arc is a good idea i disagree with the idea of every session because then it just becomes blatant but what if u added a chance of finding a hoard after a mini boss or u gave players the choice between that or a spellbook?
And if you follow the treasure rules in the DMG you can very roughly approximate how much treasure each player should gather per level, and then balance around that for things like, Spellscrolls, pistols, plate armour and potions
It's not my idea 😅 that's the suggestion in the DMG
i love orcs
so i think for most characters like 5 pots,1 magic item,2 spells
but for wizards,sorcs,rangers,druids i think maybe make it like 5 3 4?
(this is based on int and wisdom and dex bonuses and their scavenging)
A treasure hoard is made up of coins & tradebars (literal money) trade goods (whatever stuff the enemy might be hoarding, like in a mine it could be iron) gemstones, art and magic items
So a spellbook worth the same amount of gold could absolutely be considered a treasure hoard 😁
so a warrior would be handy then (donkey)
Hi love orcs, I'm Nugget
Hey so how much science in dnd is TOO MUCH science ? Asking for a Dwarf-human hybrid friend that wants to throw ALOT of mechs at his problems ...
nuggets🤤
@glass granite
you ahve to much
is dwarfs not already humans
Dwarfs are not humans, but they are humanoid
Arcane level science with magic crystals that power modular parts of mechs like gauntlets ? or ... skinny construct with thin but super durable arms and legs ?
Yeah some hoards can be difficult to move, and I'm mean to my players about carry limits >:D
Also like a sculpture won't fit in your backpack so you gotta put it down somewhere safe in every encounter
this is why i need to attach a backpack to my owl mount
How is he making and paying for the mechs? I'm pretty sure you can shut that down out the gate unless he has a mechanical justification
Well here's the weird part , I get cursed and reduced to organs and ballistic jelly inside of one of the mechs ... to work as a pawn command unit while our ideas and strategy guy sits at the butt end of the world researching new better parts , weapons and armor for me to do his grunt work till I'm upto his level
dwarven connections
If he's like "I invented it" just be like, the steam engine hasn't been invented in this world, your Dwarf has not in fact come up with future technology and there's no skill roll that could get you to that point.
However I like the idea of you being an inventor, what is something you think your dwarf could realistically build as a building block to the invention of mechs ten thousand years in the future?
Perhaps he figures out something like superheating iron to make superior weaponry
scavenging , pillaging and sending in hordes of flesh golems .
Yeah that's not realistic, scrap metal and no engine or computing components cannot make a mech
DnD isn't realistic to begin with
Not even not realistic, just not possible in D&D
Is he pillaging human settlements?
I already agreed because I get my own custom robot body loaded with gattling guns I hear dwarfs lug around these days
Or are you a player and not a DM? 😅
dark elves specifically ... What the dark elves do ?
I was approaching a hypothetical my player wants to make mechs and I don't want that
DROWS?
Any, imo. In my fantasy settings, science isn't true.
He's pillaging DROW SETTLEMENTS?
Science can't "not" exist, science is just different in DnD, but I get what you mean
This feels like reverse war crimes waiting to happen to me ..
Our current body of scientific knowledge is not true in my fantasy settings.
I mean to what extent though haha you have to have like, very basic laws of logic and biology some physics
I'm really curious about this approach, define not true
These 'Drow settlements' scale of 1 to 10 how drukhari are they ?
and conservation of energy
In my settings cells do not exist. Everything looks generally the same, but rely on different principles. Gravity doesn't exist, but things fall down, generally because the gods decreed it so.
were not playing warhammer here
Germs don't exist, but sickness does.
Ok but like, can you light a fire with friction?
im just fimiliar with WH40k this is new to me and I get the feeling Im being used for weapons testing
Firestarting kits would exist, but the principles they work on would be spiritual and/or magical.
I believe there's a word for approaching fantasy this way actually... I can't remember the literary term it's on the tip of my tongue
But it's very common haha we definitely all do it with the mechanics of D&D alone haha
Sounds ancient or fantastical
You just have to not think about it too hard or else it falls apart
There is no oxygen or hydrogen. Just water
Really? Magic is your reason a peasant can light a fire 🤔 that's very different from the default handwaving of logic
Does randomness exist in your universe?
Does anything happen without intervention from an intelligent being? Like can lightning strike a tree and start a fire without a specific god or being decreeing it so?
yeah I guess thinking about it too hard would ruin it, what is water if not oxygen and hydrogen
if there's no oxygen, what are the characters breathing?
Yeah these concepts exist in our world so the only to seperate them is to hand wave them.
It's basically imagine if an ancient understanding of the world were true, we know this cannot be true, but because we have cool human brains we can easily handwave the logic to get into that mindset
me as the baby of the group:guys haw do i cwaete a fwire ( please help)
Depends on your definition of "intelligent" since animism posits spiritual entities in just about everything, but not necessarily things you can talk to.
Step one, open your mummy's medicine cabinet
Air
step 1:gather rocks*
Ah animism, that's pretty cool, I think it's slightly different to what you described before but I get it
im the baby of the group not a baby( i need to be taught)
So... Nitrogen?
I always base my fantasy worlds of ancient Mesopotamian religion. The Earth is a snowglobe
"Don't think too hard about it." INT 11 --> INT 12
Protected & Nurtured: The group often looks out for you, offers advice, and ensures your well-being.
Playful Teasing: You're the target of lighthearted jokes about your age or perceived immaturity.
Scapegoat Potential: You might get blamed for things or have your ideas dismissed because you're the "baby".
Adapting to Milestones: You're often the last to hit major life events (first job, first serious relationship, first baby), requiring you to navigate changes in group dynamics.
@unborn lotus this is the baby
I don't think you even need air - you can read some really cool ancient philosophy about what breathing is from different cultures. We didn't have an understanding that we were constantly surrounded by any kind stuff until really late in scientific development
find two beggars and offer a gold piece to the one who can beat the other in a fist fight
jayn dont smite me please
so how do i create a fire again?
also how do u know which is firewood and which is logs
Is this fire starting instructions for Shark?
u wish
You can start a fire too to make it more entertaining
@unborn lotus this is all ur fault we got forgot to buy matches
aims a magic missile slightly above laterbots head in angy
You live in the ocean you can't start a fire
u cant blame me
i am half elf half human
You're literally a little blue fish guy
give me a break
Chaotic Neutral behavior
this is a baby water dragon
He is a baby
Your name is Sharkymini
That is so not neutral lmao
so what should i change to dracomini?
Nah don't change or I'll forget who you are
Chaotic Evil would only offer a copper piece
beyond the point
Chaotic evil does not specify it’s a fist fight
I dont even think they offer money, "fight or else i'll kill you both" or something, I can never get how evil "Chaotic Evil" is
i swear my names suck
For me all people are literally their pfp
Chaotic evil is not just “lol kill people”
Alucard
I just usually look up baby names
A vampire has to brush, ten time a day.
im trying think of a water mage name
Shark pups
Hah, kid vampire, nice reference, also unfortunately unrelated to the topic
Telling people to engage in illegal brawling when you know they really need the money is 100% evil lol
Kai could work
Shark said Alucard
so check the etymology of water, or words related to water
Hylao
Mere….
Squirt
Or just look up watery words in Latin
Hylao
would be a funny name
ur insane
meray
ⓘ User recieved a warning for the content of this message.
Everyone calls the mage Squirt, because they're so short and use water magic.
It's not their real name, but no one cares.
Kravice
you could name them for bodies of water like "Nile" for The Nile River
if ya all called me squirt i would make a tsunami occur and wash ya all downstream
Counterspell
or after water nymphs from those Greek Mythologies
Hydroxo
The lair of Scylla….
chromatic orb
This is our only way home….
lightning
Counterspell
Scylla would be good for a woman, also nice epic reference
grapple
Counterspell with my fist
@severe rampart covering fire please?
Cutting Words
Joe, the water mage
I reckon we have 1 second before a mod purges everything here if we dont get back on topic
meow
Right, well, I'm thinking of what spells I should get for more offensive power on my level 8 bard
im just thinking how funny it would be if a kraken came to @spring light and said oi mind if i have a crack at ya
Since I am the DM, that'd just be me talking to myself.
(why is there a kraken in the lake though)
sighs i have other methods
whistles
owl comes down and attacks u for being a pest
what are you even talking about
Lmao I thought this was a genuine thing and then noticed the spelling error
cross-current tolls
ur annoying counterspells
oh, well you still have the spellslots
but u bully me
as the dm, that's sort of my job though.
I am currently in hell. Help.
We found the true name of a devil. Turns out, it's a melody. One of the players, who has some musical training, played it on the piano to teach us how to sing it. Because the DM insists that we sing the melody correctly if we want to use the true name.
It's stuck to everyone's mind. We are constantly singing it. It's an earworm.
Very devilish of the DM, respect 😏
It's so bloody simple. Just ten notes, but it just stays in the mind.
hello guys! i was looking for some input from other DMs. i'm running a campaign and my next story bit involved a mimic town but i ran into something i don't have an answer to. when a mimic changes its shape into an object, possibly smaller than its true form, does it retain it's weight? or, since it's "polymorphing" into the new object, the 500lbs monstrosity now weighs whatever the new shape is supposed to weigh?
what do you need it to do?
i don't need it to act in any specific way, i just want to be accurate.
most mimics turn into an object of similar size to what they are
i have a question, how would yall all classes by how fun they are?
however, if you're going with polymorph, then it's whatever size/weight of the transformed object
i'm just reading the stat block from dndbeyond. it states that the "shapechanger" ability has the subject Polymorph into any object.
RAW, any mimic could turn into a house.
if you're going with polymorph, or especially true polymorph, then it's whatever it turns into
but as the dm, if i need it to be suprisingly light or surprisingly heavy for whatever object it is, then i'd do that
i'm not trying to rule it in a specific way, im asking what would be the correct way to run it, as per the book. i know that i can bend it however, i'm curious about the actual functionality of the ability.
A medium or small house would be downright cute
The mimic shape-shifts to resemble a Medium or Small object while retaining its game statistics
oh, what's the source of that?
the mimic statblock
Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
this is what i'm getting, where did you get that line?
There seems to be a word missing in this sentence because it doesn't make sense.
Ah, what I quoted was the 2024 version of the mimic. You quoted the 2014 one.
ohhhh....
Well with 2014 it's even easier, since it says it's statistics (being a medium creature) remain the same
o, sry english isnt my first language, i meant to say how would yall rank all classes in dnd by how fun they are
i just noticed the legacy tag. my bad. i was reading the wrong thing. thank you
What do you guys think of Conjure Lightning?
Ahh, well I would rank Bard and Monk at the top and Cleric at the bottom, but that is purely personal.
I was trying to decide on a fun 3rd level spell to put on my Druid and that spell looks good on paper but I don't know how well it functions in play.
You mean call lightning, the spell, right?
Right that, sorry!
okay, would u recommend bard for a beginner?
Well it's a good spell but like a lot of druid spells it's really situational.
Oh, no I wouldn't, it's a full caster. I would recommend something simpler.
ok but i think my question remains. it now reads it "resembles a medium or small object while retaining its game statistics" is its weight in its statistic? if i chose to make the mimic "resemble" a broom, is it a 400lb broom?
well i wanna cast spells so what would u recommend for a beginner?
also whats a full caster?
Since weight isn't part of its statistics, you get to make that part up. I always ran it as the mimic weighting about the right amount for the object it turned into.
Generally a class that gets access to the most spells and the most powerful spells.
We are outside 80% of the time in a desert. So I didn't think it was a bad spell to take. I already have all the spells I want to use.
As long as it's actually good and fun in practice, anyways.
and why is that a bad thing for a beginner? are some of the spells complicated?
You would really only use it in situations where you are drastically outnumbered. And it takes an action to reuse. It requires those enemies who drastically outnumber you to be, like, pretty far away from you.
Honestly I can't imagine a situation where you can use Call Lightning to all of its strength
any class that looks fun is good for a beginner, none of them are too complicated to understand.
Maybe something like an Eldritch Knight, a Fighter who gets access to spells a level 3 onward. But with a limited list and few spell slots.
Ohh I see. That does sound pretty situational.
Is there another 1st-3rd level spell you'd recommend? I can name out my prepared spells if needed.
The choice of spells for a full caster is one of the more complex balancing decisions one has to make in the game.
the classes in 5e are pretty simple, honestly.
For druid, right?
Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster are both decent all rounders that lay out most mechanics in an easy to understand way. I’m personally biased toward eldritch knight
Warlock, you get lots of customization, only need to plan for 2 spells per short rest until late game, and still get the benefit of higher level spells later on.
Yes, Moon 2024
Knight and Trickster are also great btw ye
But within that there are more and less complex classes, and I think simpler is easier for a beginner.
I mean... they all seem very approachable.
Beginners should play illrigger as their first class
Well, first off: Dispel Magic. You need someone in your party with it.
Revivify. Also needed.
Sleet Storm is probably the best damage spell at this level for druid
It's not like we're talking 3/3.5 mechanics here.
It's prob rly good utility if you need to damage a very big plot device, like a machine/building that's important
Spell selection and choice paralysis is the only problem really.
And I guess knowing when to use resources and when to use cantrips.
A good table and dm will help with that.
Thats why i dont recommend bard to beginners because magical secrets can stun lock certain people lol
Sadly it only deals damage to creatures, not objects.
if you're playing with an awful table, it doesn't matter what class you are, it's likely to be an unfun time
Oh absolutely, the analysis paralysis can be a lot.
I know how Bards work and even I was burning my brain when I was trying to make a 10th level Bard for a one shot.
heck, a good table and dm will even let you try out other classes if one's not turning out to be very fun for you
Actually has anyone here actually played any Illrigger? My eyes glazed over while reading it
Been wanting to try it though
Oof, yeah, that's rly annoying. At least fireball sets stuff on fire 😭
It's very easy to think you want to kill things and just choose 9 spells that kill things. I see that often.
Then you work out that 2 of them are the best and have 7 spells you literally never use.
Sure, but let's not minimize other people's experiences. Maybe you're just a gaming genius.
Okay, but trying to tell people "oh, don't start with X class" might also not be great advice?
Thank you for the suggestions! I think our sorcerer has dispel but I'll ask. If not, I'll do sleet. I have revivify.
I used to think competitive Pokémon was the easiest thing in the world until I tried to explain it to someone that’s only ever played one game lol. Perspective bias is one hell of a drug
ophidi whats ur favorite class
is it fighter
Now the advantage of call lightning is that since it lasts a minute, it's ten times 4d10 damage under stormy weather. So, 40d10 for a single spell slot. And to everything five feet around the point of impact, potentially nine medium creatures but... Again, in ten turns, things have time to move. And what fight lasts ten turn?
One possibility I am seeing is during a siege. Get yourself on a tower during a storm, that single spell slot will do respectable damage to the enemy army.
The real wizard fantasy
Speaking of Pokemon... Tabaxi aberrant sorc as Mewtwo, anyone?
Counterpoint: Fireball
I have yet to find a character I can’t make with officially supported material
I still think it's a generally good idea to try and help beginners by having them try the simpler classes.
Tossup between Bard and Monk.
So yeah, if you're like defending a castle from an invading army, that's one minute where a single third level slot might actually do more damage to the enemy army than any other third level spell slot
I think helping beginners get comfortable with whatever class appeals to them most is one of the best ways to get them into the hobby
i thought hextra attack be fighter ngl
Hextra attack is hexblade me thinks
Yes, but also leaning them toward the simpler options so as not to overwhelm with the more fiddly ones is also showing consideration.
Incineroar 💀 High charisma for sure, Intimidate is carrying
Valor Bards, Eldritch Knights, and Bladesinger Wizards all have Hextra attack.
Note that I'm not one for disallowing beginners from playing anything they want, just that I tend to encourage them to try the simpler options.
Why is that? Jw.
Eldritch Knight's is a different than the others' Extra Attack
First level they have access to three entire new spell lists.
I try to encourage my new players to look at the classes and see what vibes they like the most, and then work with them to understand that class
Yeah but you can only have 2 spells from other spell lists at that level, max.
And making a 10th level character for a one shot is a lot of spell choices and sequential spell choices all at once.
Magical secrets if you’re running only core rules material is manageable but I’ve never played at a table that didn’t have at least 3 other mods involved
btw do rangers have like a climbing hook of some sort they can use for mobility?
like a harpoon or something?
There is a grappling hook iirc
The answers lie in the book.
I don’t know its rules off the top of my head
when i asked about grappling hooks before half the people got confused
There is a grappling hook in adventuring gear, rangers get climbing speed at level ?6?
so i was like let me avoid grapple this time
Anyone can use a Grappling Hook. Just make sure to tie a rope to it...
I have no idea if its listed in the core rules but i’d recommend looking on aidded or something if its been mentioned in a phb/dmg
Here is an entry in the Equipment section, it's a piece of equipment available to any character who can buy or find it in game, not just Rangers: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#GrapplingHook2GP
now that u mention it though it doesnt seem like a half bad idea in combat lol
At lvl 6 they have climb speed. So they dont need any equipment to climb
Keep reading the book, most of your questions are answered in there: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
righto
You can't climb everything. Gear is still useful in case of sheer walls or slippery surfaces or strange holds.
I'm not sure if a climb speed does anything other than make you climb faster, so going up a 30ft wall you can do with just a move rather than a dash or making two checks
I could be wrong.
Eldritch Knight's War Magic works with the others' Extra Attack
EK Extra Attack works very much like Valor Bard and Bladesinger in 2024. Except that they eventually get 4 attacks.
is there a thing like an arm crossbow?
also would that count as ur bonus action or what
Bracer of flying daggers shoots two daggers out of your wrist.
The weapons are very flexible in how you describe them. A tonfa, a baseball bat, and nunchaku would all use the club stats.
interesting
There are crossbows, and you can describe a hand crossbow as being strapped to your arm, I suppose. It would work the same mechanically no change from a regular crossbow.
Technically thrown dagger attacks, but you could describe them as shooting out, yes.
whats a hand crossbow?
Like a pistol but a crossbow
are u saying i strap it to my arm
yikes i feel safer with arrows
A weapon from this list of the weapons in the game: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
yk what i've always thought would be cool
sorcerer with a crossbow but thats probably because im obsessed with magic
I meant, since EK's War Magic, grabbing either two's Extra Attack would allow casting two Cantrips
What about Gaderffii stick
I don't know what that is.
I'm joking, its the Tusken stick from Star Wars
what off hand options are there for mages apart from arm crossbows and daggers ?
ik theres like orbs but eh
There's Armblade but it's for Warforged
"Mage" isn't a class. What class are you talking about?
sorcerer
if i say mage u can just assume im referring to spellcasters in general so like wiz, druid, sorc
Sorcerers can use all Simple weapons. Orb is not a weapon. Here are the weapons, look at the Simple Weapon section: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
But those are all different classes and you can't just ask the same question about all of them at the same time because the answer could be different so if you're asking a mechanical question, use the actual class names.
so what godamn weapon am i meant to use
im not an archer or a warrior and all those look like melee or ranged options not magic options
Sorcerers are not good at using weapons. Generally Sorcerers will rely on Cantrips in combat, which are repeatable spells.
mostly spells and cantrips
Also, could you maybe not swear at me?
right sorry about the swearing was not meant to be towards u
if i swear unless it has a pronoun infront of it its probably not directed at u for future
I'm going to regard anything that is pinged at me to be directed at me.
hmm i see
you want to use a weapon with your sorcerer?
i was thinking of an arm crossbow but like eh
Sharky doesn't know how the classes work.
An arm crossbow could be a reflavored light crossbow, but you’d need proficiency with that weapon to use it.
May I ask why you want such a weapon on your sorcerer? is your casting being stopped frequently?
just a backup
a dagger seems a bit generic so for emergencies
There's a lot of details, like what proficiency even is, that a beginner needs to know before they can understand recommendations given. Maybe start over at #dnd-newcomers
“I’m silenced? Oh well.” shoots crossbow.
a dagger might be generic, but it's easy enough to use on most builds
There's no offhand, that's a Baldur's gate thing.
You can use a light crossbow.
could talk to your dm if you want your dagger to be reflavored to look cooler
Daggers are great. They are small and easily hidden, melee but can be thrown. Innocuous in most communities.
expected in most communities, even

if i wanted to pull a funny i could just carry some dwarven bombs with me
If you don’t have a dagger you’re immediately arrested for public indecency in some areas.
ive heard those things pack a punch
how many games have you played so far?
none
ah okay
knive dagger shield pepper spray
What's more innocuous: A dagger or a buckler?
former
im just thinking imagine if my character carried a scythe at the hip
Everyone makes fun of using a shield as a weapon until you get your nose caved in.
But a buckler is so small
You can use a sickle yes
man, i love bucklers.
How is it less innocuous?
imagine my character just has a sword at the hip
Math is math.
A lie will remain a lie!
Swords are martial weapons and you are bad at using them as a sorcerer.
Sorcerers don’t typically have martial weapon proficiency. While you could use a long sword (thank you true strike rework), you’d need to obtain the proficiency first. This can happen over downtime between sessions, provided the DM allows it and you have the requisite gold.
Having a big stick and clubbing people with it is pretty valid though.
Can rust monsters eat poison covered metal?
Yep
Depends if they have immunity to poison.
is it possible to turn an arm crossbow into a proper one?
Not if you're using official downtime rules. Those only allow tool and language proficiency training.
What is a sword but a tool for murder?
like mid combat
Notably the rust isn’t from them biting it. It’s from their antenna rusting it first.
shelf defense
They eat it after it’s fallen into pieces.
My DM joked about putting our campaign against a tarrasque for our first session 🫠
Can anything be done to a metal tool to make it fatal to a rust monster via consumption?
"Arm Crossbow" isn't an official weapon, generally if you want a weapon you would describe it, then use the official weapon rules for it. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
You can beat a Tarrasque at level one. Don’t let things like “statistics” get in the way of your dream.
Light Crossbow Armblade
So the first question is what do you even mean by "arm crossbow?"
something strapped to ur arm loaded and ready to fire
So like a regular crossbow, but strapped to your arm?
@open laurel You hear that?
Probably a hand crossbow then, as I said.
this gives me an idea
So it's already a proper crossbow, mechanically. What are you asking for?
Yessssssss 😂 Thats what I told you 😋
It just needs to roll all ones while you roll all twenties, easy.
can the damage be increased if its used more precisely i.e destrap into shot
also im just thinking dual wielding hand crossbows lmao
No, unless you have a class ability and you want to use this description for the ability.
I don't think our level 3 party can successfully fight a godzilla dupe that's resistant to EVERY TYPE OF DAMAGE 😭
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh... TPK! 😂
Sure, if you roll a 20 on the d20 for the attack, you do a critical hit for extra damage.
Have you tried?
...Good point
2014 you can solo it if you have a fly speed. It may take several hours but dare to dream.
All you gotta do? Get a portable hole, have an artificer friend, and send in a familiar.
Don't worry, I won't throw that at you for a long time, if ever
Thank GOD
The question is what is it going to do during those several hours to the world around it...
I'm fine with finding the Gelatinous Cube though LOL
Is it metagaming if a character knows that red dragons resist fire?
Like, technically yes, but it’s a dragon. There’s bound to be stories.
roll a history check
Stand there and take it. Not like the titanic god weapon has anything better to do.
How do i create a looking for a dm post on that channel
The jello cake is gonna devour you 😋
I mean, if the character is knowledgeable on myths, legends and tales, I wouldn't say so
I'd say stories about dragons were common knowledge, myself.
But if you have a character with like -2 int, I'd disagree
Type
/looking
in this channel, pick the popup for DM, fill in the form and away you go. Remember to include your regular availability and timezone. This is your chance to sell yourself as a player so make the most of it. You only get one post a week, but it doesn't go until you send the form. Good luck!
Basically how much of what they know is rumors and hearsay?
yeah, would be mostly common folklore for the people, more if the dragon is in a higher rank or did feats in the world
thank you
Like, yeah just going "Obviously red dragons resist fire, I know the stat block!" is obvious metagaming
"Hey DM, would my character know if red dragons resist fire?" would be in character
But also at the same time as a DM, I don't expect my players to intentionally do things they obviously know suboptimal, like attacking a well known fire dragon with fire just for the sake of avoiding metagaming at all costs
Red dragon, fire breathing, revels in destruction, probably not fussed about more fire. Doesn't sound like a leap to me.
“Yeah, everyone knows that Dragons are resistant to fire,” says the local peasant, blissfully unaware of the different types of dragons.
theres tales of people killing dragons with a dagger too, its hard to know whats truth and whats myth, this is the land of 20 charisma bards!!!!
"oh look, the demons in hell are fire resistant" its something i found out in last session.
Will see if the demon is resistant to a sword in the middle of the chest
"White dragon? They're made of pure cold, no mortal flame could touch them."
Personally I’m of the opinion that if the fire doesn’t work, either 1. You aren’t using enough, or 2. It’s not hot enough.
Sorcerer coded
Or it's not the right type of fire
Twin spell fireball and you might as well have bypassed its resistance
ive used firebolt agaisnt a magma elemental and i felt so dumb, he healed like 80 hp
"I didn't ask if the enemy is immune to fire and if my team is in a small room with me, I said I cast fireball!"
What type of damage does the sun do?
All of it.
One sun coming up
Getting the image of an arms dealer in Waterdeep handing out abyssal flame grenades
Wait, I lied, except for cold.
Obviously.
You know how cold can burn?
Black dragons have to be my favorite by far
Since wildspace isn’t cold that’d be the only one right?
according to spelljammer, only radiant
it's only superficial damage though... but it can be really irritating for the next few days
Oh man, imagine launching brown mold into the sun somehow
Selune didn’t die for this
Does brown mold grow off radiant?
That’s hilarious. Radia(tion)nt.
Sleet Storm isn't a damage spell. I just checked. Did you mean another spell? Sleet Storm does no damage but if you fail a save, you fall prone and lose concentration.
solar dragons make their lairs inside stars and they can do that because they are immune to radiant damage
True, but I feel more confident with the rest. Thunder? Solar wind. Necrotic? Lower band radiation. Psychic? The sun is an eldritch entity, constantly screaming.
What about acid?
Being on the sun melts you. What can that be if not acid, huh?
Probably more radiation. Despite my interest I am not a scientist, I just play one on TV.
Poison is also radiation of course of course
Fire is also radiation
Everything is radiation if you think about it
Even thinking. Especially thinking.
psychic damage is radiation
Changing a Dark star with metamagic to A literally Star would be epic
There's a lot of different types of radiation and most of them aren't ionizing
Those are the unfun ones
Sunburst? F$@%& that, im throwing you the whole sun!!
How ionic.
Down the man! Ionize or whatever they say
Ahaha!
Hello
2024 Solars getting PWK for free wasn’t on my to-do list.
Pardon
Bow of Extermination.
Its ok theyre good
Gotta love my Lawful Good genocide angles. Easily my favorite gender.
angles?
not angel, but angle?
Howdy. Don't mind us, we're just doing our little solar cult. What's on your mind today?
i also like my angles having genders
you gotta check your angles
As an Italian would say, they are acute.
Guys when we said that more creatures need ranged attacks this is not what we meant
What? You don’t like that if you grant your players a base iron flask, there’s a 1% chance they can just destroy your BBEG?
Eh optimizers can do that with two bags of holding
Something they are much more likely to have
Cast Gate Seal.
The tarrasque has 3 int it can’t even say the words gate seal
If more than 1 party member casts conjure minor elemental with the 2024 rules, does the damage bonus stack?
a tarrasque really shouldnt be the BBEG
Would get totally bodied by an intellect devourer btw what a fraud
maybe their pet
i had a tarrasque as 1/2 of my bbeg at the end of my level 20 campaign. and yeah, it was techncially the "pet" but it was definitely the more immediately dangerous threat
if you fly can't it just not reach you too?
it can throw rocks at you I guess
No one can get affected by the same spell on the same turn. But if it happens throughout different turns, then yes.
or buildings
True, but the tarrasque ate 20 sorcerers and wizards, now his whole system is fueled up by magic and now the tarrasque is wild magic.
Can cast absorb elements and when reached the limit of absorbing it do a burst around him depending of the elements absorbed.
But after it he is exposed to any kind of attack
“Any attack that you make within the emanation”.
I assume so anyways
tarrasques can definitely jump. . .
I’m unsure if that buffs party members.
you make
i wouldn't want a tarrasque to jump on me, even if it can't fly per-se
CME only works on the attacks from the caster
Yeah, so even if multiple people cast it, it’s a moot point.
Whichever caster casts it gets the bonus. So if multiple people cast it, those people get the bonus. Yeah.
Shouldn’t the tarrasque take bludgeoning damage while it walks? 10 ft and you eat concrete, and it can step higher than ten.
oh that makes sense
I was thinking the whole party gets the bonus but looking back at the spell it is only the caster
Thank you!
Tarrasque has to power walk everywhere to not get rocks in its soles.
Now if it was something like Longstrider for example. And you cast it on someone and then they cast it on themselves, it will not stack. As well as any AOE effects do not stack on the same turn.
Because spell effects do not stack unless stated otherwise.
you arent falling with one foot on the ground
What in the monster hunter?
You mean I can’t juice up my monk with a line of wizards casting longstrider so I break the speed of light?
just made it up, i find it epic and funny
Ah
So striding is fine, but if it hops in place its ankles shatter. There goes its MBA plans…
The idea of a tarrasque being wild magic for some reason, call it experiments, eating something or just growing up absorbing magic in some way that force him to release it in wild surges would be epic for me
Does the 2024 terrasque have the ability to receive the fly spell?
I mean the tarrasque would take bludgeoning damage if it jumped more than 10 ft striaght up, yes
every willing creature can
using a terrasque to siege a floating city
Can it be willing?
now thats a terrifying thought
sure
My apologies, I confused sleet storm and ice storm.
Making a tarrasque being the BBEG but being a Mahoraga kind of tarrasque.
Not even the gods would try with it
Tarroraga! Help me!
Or not the BBEG but being the principal antagonist of a "season" in that adventure
See, I think it would be really funny if every time you hit it with priest spells that caused it to get bigger
after reading about the elder brain dragon, I thought about the Elder Brain Tarrasque, now THATS a BBEG
A mindflayer librarian at a library named “Food for thought”.
Oh alright I'll keep looking at the spells and see if there's anything else that fits.
Summon Fey maybe?
I think moon beam is available to druid if you don't have that yet
i just made a Harengon Monk and im loving it i named him Tōzen.
cool!
Moon Druid automatically gets that in 2024. So I have it.
Ah ok, I honestly need to look into druid more
I may just snatch dispel magic anyways. We'll have two people with that. 🤷
boo
Harengon monks are legit so fun, they get to bounce around and punch things
the Harengon Monk I played once was a Zen-Archer Kensei. very fun
I must once again bring to your attention the d10000 wild magic surge table for your viewing pleasure
No.
Its funny i promise
i have enough with a D100 in wild magic sorc and would modify it for the tarrasque in some ways.
ugh....okey, where i can find it?
Its not made specifically for wild magic sorc but it definitely can be used for anything random and magical in nature
Nope. Im not clicking a download, i like to live.
nvm, is safe, okey, lets see
its... an effect per dice...omfg im using a fireball in my feets
You can just look up d10000 wild magic table
If you dont trust my cute widdle winks
Its not a zip bomb i pinky promise
im doing it, its.... a long text
ten thousand? thats to many
What in cannelloni name is "the stars are right"?
Its the final dice
"THE PLANET NO LONGER ROTATES"!?
?
" Someone nearby is stung by 1d1000 bees"
Reading a fanmade "chaos" thing that is a D10.000 with every number being an effect.
From the sorcerer getting his fingers turned into stone to literally stop the F~$%@* planet rotating
oh...
"8828 An exact copy of the moon appears 180° away from the original one" bro what....
My Warlock had a Chess Match with good Ol'
Strahd Von Zorovich last night
He won best 3 outta 5, surprisingly because it was an INTELLIGENCE check contest and my Warlock has 10 Intelligence while Strahd has 20 lol
We rationalized the rolls as Strahd letting him win lol
whoever made this had too much free time and im saying it in a concerning way
"6369 Target loses 1d4 levels/hit dice".....
That's what happens when you use a d20. Congratulations, though!
If we were actually playing Chess, the party would've been real screwed
I've only played Chess twice
"4892 Some common non-magical species is forever invisible to target"
helloooooo
yo
Oh, hey, it's my Lawyer
?
i have genuinely never even touched a d20 or anything dnd related and for my first ever time im going to be the DM.
Im also playing with people that have never touched the game
Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad lol
oh
is this worth it or even possible?
Yeah, just be sure to read the rules n stuff lol
"1120 Caster is covered in ketchup"
To
"9924 The planet now rotates twice as fast "
Imagine fighting Mindflayers and getting covered in Ketchup
"Seems our meal has already prepared themselves."
na, the whole thing is an example of someone with too much free time and creativity
Absolutely! Substitute something else: "My friends and I have never touched a bat or ball and we want to try baseball. Is it even worthwhile or possible?"
Hopefully you'll see that the answer is yes. You'll probably get things wrong—the game doesn't have the lowest bar for entry. But if you all had fun, you did something right. And you can adjust how you play as you learn the game more fully.
At least 5 years writting everything or 6 months going through reddit asking
No such thing as too much creativity
Ok thank you for the much needed help
Does anyone know some good spells that would work for a psionic theme? I've got the obvious ones, Dissonant Whispers, Mage Hand, Message, etc.
Synaptic Static, but that's a 5th level spell
Yes it is. Literally the scale go to "oh look, im covered in honey" to "I JUST STOPPED THE WORLD AND COPIED THE MOON!!"
No there isn't.
Creativity is a blessing, one cannot have enough of it
Shield, flavor it as Telekinetically protecting your body
I was thinking of also using Gift of the Gem Dragon. 🙂 My table's pretty light on restrictions, so I'm using a whole bunch of my books.
True, but there is limits of how much burger, onion rings and fries you can handle.
would be funny for a campaign around idk, some chaos entity that is doing things in the world and the party must find a way to stop it? yes. totally
Some sort of "the embodiment of chaos is having fun with the world, you all must get stronger and find a way to stop it"
Can I post a link to my homebrew on Homebrewery? is it allowed?
Welcome! There's lots of ways to find a party, but one here is with #find-a-game . Check out that channel and read the instructions. Good luck! ⚔️
Yup, they're allowed! Just make sure to give people context when you post the link so they know what they're clicking into.
It's quiet..
Are we planning a heist?
A..
Dragonheist?
Stealing a dragon is hard. How did they even get it to fit through the door? Maybe if we unscrew the wings and rotate it, it could fit.
Could be like Themburchad was born in a lair. Grew into it and then somehow escaped. So he could star in cinema
Can’t decided on an Australian, spanish, or vaguely British accent for my fox swashbuckler rogue (Tabaxi reskin)
make them as confused as you are about it and just sprinkle each in during different scarios... spanish when speaking about food, british when in social situations and australian when in a fight
why wouldn't a rogue adjust their accent to their environment
Go Austrian
Well for one, even though rogues get reliable talent, I, the player do not, and would have a rough go in balancing the 3 in one character lol
Where would I post an encounter and ask for feedback on it?
Dragons is what they call the currency in Waterdeep, I believe 😭
I was joking.
I know smh
It just wasn't funny /silly
The simple solution is to Polymorph the Dragon, Duhhh!
Or try to fit it in a bag of holding..
But good luck with even attempting
Actually, Polymorphing is a sensible answer 😭
Go silly, speak goofy
hmmmm hitpoints is it 1d8? + con modifyer?
depends on class
thief
Like thief rogue?
yeah
Yea its a d8
Most dms run it as you roll your hit die, take half or better and add your con mod
Or at least in my experience
ok
Well gorsh
On a level up. For the first level, it's always the maximum of the Hit Die for that class, plus Constitution modifier.
is dragons of the stormwreck isle good as a first time ever dnd
im also the DM of my "group"
Sure I've heard it mentioned, but I don't know about prewritten adventures. Sit tight, someone will know better.
Yep, it's made for new players and DMs alike.
any other suggestions?
Heroes of the Borderlands.
Nice to be here
I wonder if there is anyone who needs developer's hand for super cool project
If you are looking for developer, feel free to contact me
Dnd?
What are you offering?
im blockchain and ai engineer
Not sure that really fits in around here, but maybe try #dnd-advertisements.
ok
Block chain and ai? I think you maaaay have gone to the wrong server- this is a server for dungeons and dragons, a creative, collaborative game
Also ai is expressly not allowed on the server for a bunch of really good reasons
Groups starting an all rogue campaign this weekend at level 1, how cooked are we
Larian might be hiring tho if that's where you thought you were
What would you say are some of the strongest warlock subclasses, including the extra third party content on DnD beyond?
Strong in what ways
Damage/control
So a destroyer of creativity and the environment very cool
I think you’re a little lost m8
Also do ppl still fall for nfts?! I thought that died out already
There's nothing wrong with AI. Don't need to be mean.
I’m pretty sure NFTs specifically are dead but people still fall for crypto schemes as recently as earlier this year if the Hawk Tuah girl is any indication
That might’ve been last year actually
Except it's used to make heinous and sometimes illegal content, ruins the environment and is actively ruining creativity and communities
Nobody is being mean about ai. Simply stating that it's not necessarily a fit for this server, where it is not allowed.
Wait we’re getting off topic…which warlock patron is most likely to be a crypto bro
D&D is a creative and collaborative hobby, llm/Gen AI is anticreative and functions on theft and misattribution of effort
There a lot of great use cases outside of what you mentioned for it.
Yeah but DND isn’t one of them
None of those case uses have to do with d&d
Not rlly at all except for making lazy slop
All AI in D&D provides is bad art made with stolen assets and poorly written summaries of the rules that are generally incorrect
Blockchain similarly doesn't really have overlap with d&d. While it is not banned like genai/llm use is, it is very off topic
And also historically a scam
Google AI will give you different answers depending on the time of day
That's a very narrow way of looking at it. Obviously great use cases in IT, and other fields, but in DnD it's great for generating creative prompts. Not unsimilar to rolling on a D100 table for ideas when you're creating content.
So like I said, if you're looking to peddle ai stuff I believe larian has their own server to solicit for work on there
Theirs nothing creative about a machine taking things from other media do it yourself
And it also doesn't ruin the planet with a d100
I’d probably pick fiend for damage, great old one for control, third party has future you patron for a bit of both
Anyway nobody was being mean
thoughts on archfey?
I guess we will just disagree. That's probably the best way to end this conversation. I don't see anything productive coming from it.
Archfey is good for movement purposes
Simply stating that it isn't allowed in the server.
I like archfey the most for VibesTM
It also has impeccable vibes
That's cool and all just know your AI garbage ain't welcome and know you support making unimaginative garbage that pollutes and ruins communities that have ai facilities
Fey in general are just 🧑🍳
But hey I can make a trash picture so it's fine
I do support AI. It has its use cases. You've made your stance on it quite clear and so have I.
And just know you also support waste and ruining ppls lives just so a robot can type for you
-# Ok let’s keep it civil folks
I'm being very civil honestly it's just the reality
You're clearly very passionate about your stance. What's your goal here?
It's not being passionate to point out the facts and why it's not worth the squeeze to support something that does way more harm than actual good
Um, you aren't, you are now attacking a person and not the idea, so no, it is no longer a civil conversation
What's not worth something to someone might be to another, no one dictates what someone else seems as worthy
I'm not insulting them in anyway and they can choose to block me if they want
Shouldn't have to come to that
I'd say being able to have a robot make a picture isn't worth the cost of how badly it ruins communities and the environment
This isn't the channel for this debate anyway. This is for D&D talk. If you want to talk about AI move to #non-dnd-topics
Agreed
Excellent! Have you all got your own facets arranged?
I think people demonize blocking a lot more than they need to. It's a healthy way to help manage your social engagement
Oh helll yeahhhh
I block people all the time. Sometimes I even remember to add a note as to why
Oh dang, that sounds fun
I never block people unless they’re actively harassing me but idc if other people block. the tools are there for a reason
A paladin’s worst nightmare
I generally save blocking as a last resort. I usually try to have a conversation and understand the person. But sometimes it's really not worth the effort.
That sounds like a blast. Have fun 😄
Depends on the platform and if you know the person at all.
-# off-topic but, Hades is goated
Yeah I need to play Hades II.
Well, so far we’ve all got our character sheets squared away, stats rolled with the dm, and if we survive long enough our chosen subclasses. (Swashbuckler, thief, and assassin)
Here's hoping you get to do at leaat one heist.
Sneak in one Barbarian who's pretending to be a Rogue and see how long it takes for them to figure it out
I just hope to survive since I’m probably gonna be targeted the most being the one in melee
You know what would be hilarious? Preparing a backup rogue
Conan was a thief.
And a king, and a pirate, and general, and a soldier, and a whole lot of other things
Lad went 1-20.
And then some
He wore armor as often as not, usually fought with a long knife (poignard) but would use whatever is nearby, and spoke like a dozen languages
Pulp heroes truly are a different breed
Is there a way to make gambit in 5e dnd?
one of the craziest moments of the last few days was finally wrapping up a campaign that ran for over seven years. Countless sessions, endless plots and twists… and a lot of beer along the way
I never expected that a table full of people in their 30s would end up crying at the very end, together with their DM (yeah, that was me).
Some stories just stay with us forever. And honestly? When I finally retire, I might just write this one down as a book… haha
It's generally not a good idea to try to emulate a character from fiction in D&D, there are throwing cards, but that's about it
Alternatively, you could play a wizard and flavor throwing fireballs as storing kinetic energy in cards
Flavor is free, but mechanically recreating a character in their entirety is.. improbable
I just want the exploding cards is there a homebrew website with that?
Probably
The sinner rogue subclass from crooked moon is your closest non homebrew bet, lets you use gaming set stuff (cards included) as a weapon that does force damage, has the vex property, and there’s a whole slew of effects you roll for when you hit sneak attack
But that’s 3rd party so you’d need permission
Not sure if you have a group lined up or just making characters for fun or whatever, but heads-up if this is helpful!
A DM (and group tbh) is likely to review your homebrew and there's a chance what you find doesn't fit (and this can be for a number of reasons). As such, they might say it's not allowed.
That's not to say you shouldn't look at homebrew, of course! Just trying to set better expectations! Good luck! ✌️
Sinner rogue gets a force attack that uses a game set so make that cards. And take the cartomancer feat as well of course
Ty
Is it just me but seeing others play dnd gives me so much motivation to write my own campaign ready, whenever the actual session is next
Jinxcraft can also let you do different effects with your sneak attack which can emulate his different energy infusions
Where do I find sinner rogue?
Literally said it earlier
Can someone answer a question for me fellow dms? I have a Pact of Blade Warlock player who has a weapon bonded and he recently took the dual wielder feat, he wants to use Conjure to create a pact weapon, from my understanding reading it you can only have one or the other. Which is it?
It only works with 1 weapon
Cool thought so, thanks
our cleric stood in place curing himself out of all of his spell slots instead of disengaging to come heal our fighter who was low
What is the table for jinxcraft because it doesn't say what it does
Idk
shrugs
I'd kill that Cleric ngl (not that I suggest it)
we lost the fighter btw
You’d likely have to get the content since we can’t go into al the specifics of that kind of stuff without breaking server terms and all
The short of it is you roll 2d6 and depending what you get with your total there’s different debuffs
Its not super expansive but too large to post here one sec ill see if i can find it somewhere easy
Its in Crooked Moon
If you just wanna buy the book (its pretty awesome imo)
Is it kickstarter because there a nuther cool one its like i think kaijus and yokai?
It’s on dnd beyond, crooked moon part 1
Yea i usually only answer questions on here with officially supported answers (you know considering this is DnDBeyonds server n all lol)
Is there a way to get in I normal book form?
Yep you can buy a phys copy from the store
I think all of the crooked moon classes slap. The species are a bit overtuned imo but the setting justifies it i feel
Oh nice is there any others books that have cool rouge subclasses or new races?
I forgot what book soulblade is from (tashas?) and inquisitive is niche but fun
I got all the main books mostly for free but the super new ones I think last time I saw a cowboy one?
Oh yeah the valdas gunslinger
Nice
Is that also a actual book you can have?
You can buy a physical copy direct from the publisher Mage Hand Press
I will warn that Valda’s, like Crooked Moon are 3rd-Party so they’re unofficial content
So not every table will be likely to allow it
Oh I don't know anyone except my frends that have no idea how to properly play dnd and just want to have fun. I do know how to play tho. They seemed interesting so I made a fun campaign I hope 😅
Also what 3 party book in dnd beyond has the best races?
Gunslinger and its subclasses are so fun (if also a bit niche)
My fav is high roller
Secret agent is kinda bad but its also fun
Its got really good art of a 007 dragonborn
It is pretty solid for sure
whats your favourite Monster?
Mimic
mines Hydra
Dragons are kinda cool
Humblewood made me love couatls
coatls? the snake birds?
theyre cool
I won’t spoil why but yea i kinda love them now
