I need wise informed help and advice.
My first gaming PC is a prebuild from 2020, Ryzen 7 3700X with a RTX 3070 8GB. Will I be able to upgrade my CPU to the 9800X3D & add a 50 series GPU card without changing my motherboard (ASRock X570 Pro4), and still be able to run 64GB of DDR4 RAM? Or is this just a really stupid question because I have no idea what I'm doing and I've never built a PC before. If I have to upgrade my motherboard, then I'm going to gift my 2020 pre-built PC to my 2nd cousin who turned 18 this year and will be enrolling in college to study Computer Engineering in the fall.

I know there's ppl here who can help me.
DDR5 RAM prices are insane right now, along with SSD prices. I'd much rather take the wallet hit for that than him since he's young and starting out, plus it'll leave him room for growth throughout college.

Can someone please help me? I want to save money where I can but I'm also willing to be poor for the next few years so that my favorite cousin can get a decent care package from me for college whilst I use my new rig for work, Blender, UE5 and gaming.

Hi, like Nahid I strongly recommend a 5950x if you're working with a lot of CAD software and it will still be a nice boost to gaming. 64GB of DDR5 alone will run you north of $600 before the board and cpu.

You can buy a 5950x for about $250ish used on eBay for comparison.

Also, to answer your other question @tawny blade a 5000 series gpu will work on your board.

Though you may need to buy a new PSU or adapter. Please make sure the 12VHPWR connector is well seated and that all pins are fully inserted (check the pins in the connector for wiggling by moving the wiring)

Correction, +$600 USD unless you can find some used on FB or eBay where you probably can get it for $300

If you do go the AM5 route, you can usually find a refurb 7950x on Newegg for $330 USD. I have bought one from them.

You will need a AM5 motherboard, 600 or 800 series board doesn't matter unless you need the IO/PCIe in which it's up to you to research what the board has.

1,000w PSU ideally with native 12VHPWR connection. I recommend the Corsair SF1000, Montech 1050w, or other A-Tier psus in the #cases-psu-and-cooling pins.

For the ram, so long as it's not crucial or corsair pretty much anyone goes. G,Skill, Klevv, Kingston, and Teamgroup make decent and good ones.

For some decent 64GB of ram try to find a 2x32kit as that will be much easier for the CPU's memory controller to handle than 4 dimms. Regarding speeds you're unlikely to run 6400mhz without some tuning so opt for a 6000cl32 or lower cas kit.

Good luck trying to run 4 dimms of DDR5 above 5600mhz.

If you don't need 4 dimms I strongly suggest getting a 2 dimm board as you will have a much easier time running DDR5 at high speeds on a 2 dimm board due to less signal interference/reflection within the traces.

Not cheap but the B850M Power board from MSI is a good one. Same for the B850M Force V2 from Gigabyte which is much cheaper.

If it specifies the IC (also called die) on the ram, Hynix A die is the best currently or Hynix M for 24/48GB sticks.

You'd be surprised by how few people actually use more than ~20GB let alone more than 32. For CAD I can see that getting into the 40ish range which means the 2x24GB kits are a good choice or 2x48 if you use more than 64 but less than 128.

I get your position having been through it myself. Note, although it costs slightly more I strongly recommend doing smaller upgrades and selling the old parts along the way. FB is a good way to do that without dealing with marketplace fees and getting a better return on cost of goods.

• 7950x3D + 2x32
• 7950x + 2x32
• 9950x3D + 2x32

and along the way, 3 different boards for AM5.

That's way more than I need. I'm going to see if the keyboard on this one is any good, the display models kind of sucked but they didn't have this screen and the last gen inspiron that did have this screen had a good keyboard. I'm pretty sure that was because it was a snapdragon though so the internals were different and helped stiffen it. I got a 226v.
Someone needs to just make a macbook pro with a decent windows x86 in it. That would be perfect for me.

I don't need to care about performance really so I can be on the cheaper end. Might end up using it for light games like mtg arena or emulators while traveling but all I really have to care about is good keyboard and battery and I want a better than 1920x1200 and not an oled. The screen part made it really hard to find anything. This one is 2560x1600 ips and I think 90hz.
