I keep going back to give the Rail and Bow another go, but I'm awful with them [can't get reliably past Asphodel], compared to the Shield and Spear. But other people seem to swear by the Bow...

As someone who's bad at this kind of game [and is currently at ~45 hrs, ~10,000 darkness invested, with no clears], I am not sure I agree, to be fair.
It depends on what you think the point of the game is - for me, getting a clear [for that tiny aspect of the story] is fine, but whilst I can still progress all of the other story bits, I'm not really having a problem with not being able to do that.

I'm new to Hades - and I'm pretty crap at roguelikes - but one thing that Dead Cealls previously beat into me is that the only realistic damage mitigation is to not get hit at all. It just feels a bit like if I'm at the point where "weak" matters to me, I'm probably getting hit too often anyway and likely need to change weapons (or just git gud or something, I dunno).
Does gameplay in Hades provide you with health boosts frequently enough (centaur hearts, buyable items at the well of Charon, etc.) that lowering the damage you're taking is a viable strategy, rather than trying to perfect your dash and defence timing?

From what little I've seen from gameplay from people who are good at the game, mitigation is a viable pick, at least when starting out.

I've been avoiding God Mode for a similar reason. I'm sure I'll need it eventually (as I said, I'm crap at roguelites), but I know that I first need to sufficiently build up the reflexes and attack pattern recognition in Normal mode. If I only rely on being able to take too much damage, there'll come a point somewhere in the game where that alone just isn't enough to carry me.

tbf a lot of the game by design is artificial difficulty, god mode gives you 20%? damage reduction starting out but then you can allocate 1 heat to give enemies 20% attack and that pretty much cancels it out. if you were strictly "normal mode" you wouldnt even use the darkness buffs and thats just gimping yourself so that the game is a nightmare for no good reason

@hidden vector IIRC you need to trigger certain conversations with him, ||Nyx, Hades and Megeara||, at some point you will get a quest ||to ease up his sentence||, once that's done you can proceed to gift him. Save up some ||diamonds||.

The slow is pretty good. At 10 Chill it makes dodging bosses a lot easier. If you can get the Boon that increases slow and does damage over time when all enemies on screen are at 10 Chill it helps even more.

there's a special room before every boss, which is always a safe room. Either a shop or a reward. You can also check the room number in the top right while looking at the boons menu

Hermes can bypass it
but it works just as you say, first boon should be from that God unless Hermes beats them. It is used up once you take their boon- as seen on the counter under the keepsake

Hmmm, I always pick Chaos Gates when I can because essentially despite giving weaker % bonuses than the typical god boons, they have the difference that they can stack with existing boon effects, when typical boons will kick out another that affects the same type of action. However, if you know you have a playstyle you're leaning into, a Hammer can certainly be better. And honestly I'd pick a Hammer all the time because despite the chance that the alterations are not great for what you're looking for, they're basically never an overall negative. That's my view about that question up there which has passed now.

I got to ||Persephone|| for the first time today. Had an AMAZING run today. I had 27% chance to evade damage from the keepsake I had. And then when I used Call, I’d get an extra 30% evade chance as well.
