So I have noticed that I forget to use my specials a lot. I have not played for long so rn I'm assuming that's just something I have to get better at by playing, but is there a simpler way, like mapping to another key?

Some weapons hardly ever use their specials TBH

I've done okay with the default Special binding, but it's worth trying a new binding. Swords, Rails, one shield, two spears, two bows, and the fists use their specials regularly

sometimes it will give you nothing but painful curses, would generally (for new players) recommend taking it for weapons like sword/bow/spear for attack/dashstrike buffs but fists and rail won't get a significant boost since they should be using things like dio/ares/zeus for primary damage (which chaos won't improve base damage for).

minotour is super easy u just had to memorize his fighting patterns

he always does two slashes wwith his axe then followed with either 1-3 lunges towards you

if u time it right and get out of the slashes before he lunges up to you dash away in any direction

you just need a good distance away from him when he lunges and slashes

for the move he does when he rushes at you, just head towarrds a pillar and right before u hit it dash thrrough it, he hits the pillarr and gets stunned for about 3 seconds, this is the perfect time to lay down the damage

for his second phase, he pretty much does the same things except his lunges end with 4 seperate little AOE purple magic thingy's you just need good distance awway from it or good tiiming with ur dashes to go through them and prevent damage

how far have you gotten?

Generally things with high % are best for slow high base damage weapons and boons with flat bonuses (like zeus/dionysus/ares) are good for quick low damage fast weapons.
Slow weapons (recommend artemis, aphrodite or high rarity athena attack): Bow
Medium weapons (benefits from all, recommend ares attack, athena special, athena dash, or zeus or artemis attack): Sword, shield
Fast (benefits from zeus/dio): Spear, 6th weapon, 5th weapon

Personally if you haven't won a run yet I'd just experiment with all weapons to find something you find fun.
Best combos (if you care):
sword: dashstrike+strike+special
spear: dashstrike+dashtrike+attack
shield: attacks(knockback),dashstrike(won't knockback)
bow: do dashstrike powershots (get a feel for the timing on the skelly room)

Generally on Guan Yu, the hammers you want are Charged Skewer > Quick Spin > Massive Spin > Serrated Point. Breaching Skewer and Serpent Wing also alright. And Breaching Skewer becomes top priority for the second hammer if you have Charged Skewer already.

Charged Skewer shortens the startup of Guan Yu's Special a whole lot and lets you hold your Special for up to triple base damage.

You'll want Heartbreak Flourish or Deadly Flourish ideally, anyway, for the high % damage. Guan Yu's Special has 45 base damage, piercing, and wide AOE. Anything with % damage is good on Attack except Tempest Strike is unorthodox and requires fully leaning into Poseidon to make it work (though it can be effective and fun).

For optimal DPS, you're either doing Special > Dash-Strike x2 or Cast > Dash-Strike x2 with Guan Yu. Cast for single-target, Special when you can hit multiple enemies with it (or if you have Charged Skewer). And just your Special and reposition if it's enough to one-shot things (which it often is if you have Charged Skewer).

There are two ways to charge the spin: from a normal Attack and from a Dash-Attack. 99% of the time you want to charge from a Dash-Attack. And there are three ways to release a spin: let go of Attack, Dash, and Dash-Attack. Letting go of Attack is the safest method and how you want to release it most of the time. It's also usually the best method for keeping the spin on your enemy. Releasing with a dash gives you i-frames and a lot more range for the spin, but it travels faster. You mainly use that to quickly escape a situation or to throw your spin at very far-away enemies. And releasing with a Dash-Attack gives you the extra range that a Dash gives but without any of the i-frames, but the benefit is that you can immediately charge a new spin. This method is the most aggressive and best for DPS, and it can keep you within the Deflect spin if you happen to use Divine Strike.

If you're just on the base shield, may try Aphrodite's attack with the Charged Shot hammer, get Zeus's Aid + Static Discharge, and hope you get the Aphro + Zeus Duo boon Smoldering Air so you can just spam the crap out of Zeus's call, which is busted especially with Jolted

You'll want to put a few poms into the Attack and the rest into Static Discharge

Mainly the stygian blade, with the aspect that when you special it dislodges the cast in the enemies

In that case I'd suggest using athena's cast, get as many poms on it as possible and cast at him at a distance. Then use the special to dislodge the casts after he has done an attack or when he's doing lasers/pots and repeat.
If you get hermes things like extra dashes, hypersprint and quick reload (casts drop from foes faster) work well too.

fully maxxed acorn is the best late, 5 hits is a lot of damage it blocks, and i usually take coin purse at the start of the run to get more value out of the intrest u get from the night of the mirror ability

a) using god keepsakes to force in gods you want for the first two biomes is really really useful to ensure you actually have a build going, so taking coin purse has massive opportunity cost.
b) use deep pockets, don’t use golden touch. You want to be fast and loose with your obols, as spending them earlier gets you more value and more control over your build in the long run, so it makes less sense to take purse specifically to collect interest.
c) if there is anywhere to use coin purse, it’s in elysium after you’ve got your build mostly together to help you buy ely shops and wells, but often hourglass from charon is better since you can then extend buffs from wells all the way to the ||Hades|| fight

P.S.* if you happen to have all the gods you could want by the time you exit tartarus, I’d consider taking purse into asphodel there.

the main use case for golden touch is if you’re really dying for those metagame resources in styx (blood & diamonds)

all the hidden aspects fundementally change the weapon in some way (typically making them heavier) alongside whichever aspect specific thing they provide

so Guan-Yu's spin is more like a slicing shot from ares, and the special just innately has explosive launcher-like properties (with better aoe)

its gimmick is the lifesteal it has innately (where you trade off max hp for lifesteal on spin) but honestly you're better off just building around its strong innate special

Nyaanyaa's Guan Yu Guide
Generally on Guan Yu, the hammers you want are Charged Skewer > Quick Spin > Massive Spin > Serrated Point. Breaching Skewer and Serpent Wing also alright. And Breaching Skewer becomes top priority for the second hammer if you have Charged Skewer already.

Charged Skewer shortens the startup of Guan Yu's Special a whole lot and lets you hold your Special for up to triple base damage.

You'll want Heartbreak Flourish or Deadly Flourish ideally, anyway, for the high % damage. Guan Yu's Special has 45 base damage, piercing, and wide AOE. Anything with % damage is good on Attack except Tempest Strike is unorthodox and requires fully leaning into Poseidon to make it work (though it can be effective and fun).

For optimal DPS, you're either doing Special > Dash-Strike x2 or Cast > Dash-Strike x2 with Guan Yu. Cast for single-target, Special when you can hit multiple enemies with it (or if you have Charged Skewer). And just your Special and reposition if it's enough to one-shot things (which it often is if you have Charged Skewer).

There are two ways to charge the spin: from a normal Attack and from a Dash-Attack. 99% of the time you want to charge from a Dash-Attack. And there are three ways to release a spin: let go of Attack, Dash, and Dash-Attack. Letting go of Attack is the safest method and how you want to release it most of the time. It's also usually the best method for keeping the spin on your enemy. Releasing with a dash gives you i-frames and a lot more range for the spin, but it travels faster. You mainly use that to quickly escape a situation or to throw your spin at very far-away enemies. And releasing with a Dash-Attack gives you the extra range that a Dash gives but without any of the i-frames, but the benefit is that you can immediately charge a new spin. This method is the most aggressive and best for DPS, and it can keep you within the Deflect spin if you happen to use Divine Strike.

Fwiw I do think you're going after him with the hardest weapon - I say this as someone who also doesn't play games often! He does such a nasty amount of damage up close.
Try spear, if you haven't, I like plain old aspect of Zagreus, especially with a few blood thrown at it, because you can get away from him and still do plenty of damage.

Fighting bosses you’ve already beaten gives a decent chunk of darkness

Much better to do that to farm darkness than to chase darkness rooms

Thirst is when one of your weapons randomly has a purple glow

You get extra darkness if you choose the glowing one

Won’t be a very significant amount of extra unless you’re going to fight already beaten bosses though
