In short, there are two phases to it:

• challenge yourself to something that seems barely within your reach, because you have the motivation to improve
• look at what those better than you are doing and try to understand why they made the plays they did. There is a Hades speedrunning discord server (linked in #self-promotion ) where people share their speedrun and high heat accomplishments, which in my opinion is the most reliable source of Hades technical game mechanics info out there.

To add, there's basically 2 parts to the game. There's the character building (e.g. how you lay out mirror talents, what boons to choose, getting synergies), and then there's the execution aspect (understanding boss patterns, hitting attacks, not dashing into lava). The better you get at character building, the more of a margin of error you get from execution tests. The better at execution you get, the more you can just vibe out with character builds.

Precisely. Once one gets good enough, any type of build or mirror or pact can work. this doesn't mean those choices are irrelevant, it just means it takes more mechanical skill or build decisionmaking knowledge or sheer luck to make up for the less strong setup.

Yeah, and both sides of the coin gain in importance once you start talking about higher level stuff like higher heat settings, fresh file runs, or speedrunning. For a lot of people (idk actual numbers), guides or watching good players just isn't necessary to get to the end credits. Simply experience and upgrading what they have can usually do most of the heavy work. Meanwhile a high heat run is like getting a lottery ticket and having to do a marathon to collect on the winnings. a little prep can go a long way there lol.

Hell mode enables the pact of punishment from the first run and forces 5 heat on you, including a new pact exclusive to hell mode.
+20% enemy dmg
+20% foes
+15% hp
-25% healing
*Shield that pops up when taking too much dmg doesn't show up ever (hell mode exclusive)
Oh and god mode is disabled ig

Also makes bounties go to 25 instead to accommodate for the 5 forced heat

Realistically it just makes early game a bother as everything is just more tanky while you wait for your meta progress to catch up

Forced hp/+foes messes with speedruns and those options you never want to take them for 32 heat

Main "use" is for people going to 45+ heat and beyond

Cuz by that point you are already forced to use those same forced heat and the new pact allows you to turn off stuff like +30% hp or +60% foes

The thing about 32 heat is that you can reach the target number without bricking your ability to get good builds

RI/AP are blocking that

Swap to lasting consequences to max and on your mirror swap to stubborn defiance: your strat here is use it as your heals by activating it on purpose if you are at lower than 30% hp* in a combat

Athena defiance trick: while using stubborn defiance, if you first use it in a room with athena as the reward, then she offers either of her boons that refill a defiance, picking up either of these will grant you a death defiance and next chamber stubborn will regenerate, so you have 1 death defiance + stubborn (you can get 2 dds + stubborn like this)

This will ask you to get more practice to bosses but allows easier normal combat

Swap golden touch: gold at the start is much better to start securing your builds

Olympian favor to dark foresight: it boosts the chances to see more in run upgrades by a lot while decreasing the chance of darkness/keys/etc.

Authority to persuasion: boon rerolling is a lot better especially for hermes, and protects you from selling good boons at underworld customs.

Already mentioned the defiance stuff

If using non gilga weapons you want to swap to greater reflex but doesn't matter rn

Turn on extreme measures at least to lvl 2, 3 is ideal but you will need to practice.
Turn on tight deadline at least to level 2: your time clears will be a lot faster once you turn off the other pacts I mentioned

Benefits Package 1 is debatable; I used to be a bp1 apologist but honestly outside of very specific tartarus/elysium bp2 combinations it shouldn't be too different and provide 3 extra heat

• Flat dmg vs % increases
  Some gods like zeus add an extra effect to your weapon hits, we call this flat dmg.
• other gods like aphrodite increase your weapon dmg by +%
  What type of boon do you take depends on your weapon, faster but weaker hits prefer flat dmg boons while heavy hitters, slower prefer percentages increases

Gilga also has an extra * in that you get +2 dashes
All weapons can use these ofc but gilga can give them extra oomph

In fact, "dash only" runs are a thing

So the beginning step is looking at gilga and see what boons you would use
As you are dash striking a lot, with somewhat weak hits is often more preferable to go for zeus
Zeus also often synergizes with himself a lot, the more boons of his the better

And how to get zeus reliably? Use your keepsakes
The keepsakes you get from the gods are your best tool at getting consistent builds

#h1-builds-and-combat pinned messages should have you covered on possible build-paths.

As a general rule of thumb, you'll want to start the run with a god keepsake, then switch to another god keepsake in asphodel, then equip a utility- or safety-keepsake (hourglass, purse, acorn, tooth) in elysium, then equip acorn (or leave it on if you already used it for elysium) for styx.

In the event you decide to run the above poseidon dash build nooby mentioned, your keepsake order would probably be start poseidon (dash and applicable tier 2 boons, namely razor shoals and breaking wave), then look for zeus (lightning reflexes or attack or cast, then once you have one of those look for static discharge).
If you did not naturally encounter zeus in tartarus, equip his keepsake for asphodel. If you did meet him, feel free to force him regardless, he has several useful things to give you too.

The reason god keepsakes are so good at consistency is due to a mechanic called god pool

God pool
When you take a boon from a new god they are added to a pool.
-this pool can contain 4 gods-
Chaos and Hermes boons don't count for this
Once 4 gods are taken in this pool, the rest will disappear from the run. (As a note, selling all boons from a god will not remove the god from your pool.

What this means for runs is that you have better chances at seeing the gods you do care about and their duos. Before the good pool is closed you have a 1 in 7* ||or 8 once demeter is unlocked|| to be the god you want, with the pool closed, you increase your chance to 1 in 4.

How to break god pool cap
-Using a god keepsake (keepsake of one of the main gods, forces next boon to be them) of a god not in pool will force the god regardless and add them to the pool.
-On occasions, you can enter a midshop with 3 gods, buy your 4th god and have a 5th god in the exit door
-enter the last area with 3 or less gods and every god could be offered

Note: Breaking the god cap is usually not that useful as it just means less chances to get who you want again but if you really need that duo/divine dash then it is an option.

Tl;dr grab a god = added to pool
Once 4 gods in pool = vanish the rest
Keepsakes let you guarantee a god in your pool
Keepsake = good

ah i understand. so basically its not a matter of if the shackle disables completely, there's a ristriction set for each type. so if theres a boon for attack. the effect turns off for attack only while the rest is still active unless a boon goes in their respestive slots as well

If you only have 2 or 3 boons, but they’re really important core boons, then rarifying them is best. If you have 4+ boons, then Pom porridge is best, especially if multiple boons are important for your build. If your build is still in the works, or you’re really fishing for a certain boon still and you know the god you need is in the pool, then refreshing nectar is best.

also taking him in tartarus generally means you have like 0 build

in asphodel you have more of a build and is the best place to fight him to get good value out of it

Honestly the bulk of the difficulty comes from inexperience with the fight, and the fact that his stats are the same no matter what biome you’re in

so if you take him in Tartarus or Asphodel you’re in there for a while

there are multiple ways of acquiring titan blood.

• possibly the least efficient method of grinding it is trading withe the wretched broker in the lounge.
• the main way of acquiring titan blood is the following.
  if you're playing on hell-mode:
  activate the next bounty-level or switch to another weapon which has not beaten a run at a given heat-level yet (from 5 up to 25)! Note that one needs to beat a run with a given weapon on a given heat to advance to the next set of bounties.
  if you're playing on normal mode:
  the pact of punishment only unlocks upon first win, after which one can grind titan blood effectively the same way as on hellmode. after you've unlocked the pact, bounties 1 through 20 become available. the bounties for heat level 0 are tracked independently.

speaking of which, this feels like a #h1-for-new-players question. you're likely to encounter story- and mechanics-spoilers in here, so if that's something you care about feel free to return here at a later moment to prevent having the game be spoiled to you.

many boons in hades has a set of prerequisites. if you fulfill these requirements, the duoboon or legendary (which share their odds. I may sometimes refer to both of these types of boons as "shiny boons" unless relevant.) can show up (12% per slot in regular rooms, 10% per slot in minibosses. that's right, minibosses have slightly lower odds of giving shinies).

at some point, the player can unlock a house contractor upgrade to view the list of requirements of each boon, maybe that'll help you.

Stubborn is to counter lasting consequences 4 basically, aka no healing
You use stubborn as your healing and for 4 heat you can get away from making rooms a lot worse

The higher you climb the less consistent rooms are over bosses so having that regenerating cushion is welcome

You also have stuff like the athena defiances trick or patroclus that make stubborn way safer than you expect

If you use stubborn in the room with athena as the reward, and get either of her defiance refill boons, you will get a death defiance then on your next chamber, stubborn comes back as usual
