It's a very old text editor, made waay before GUIs and such. If you need to do some command magic at some point, you press Esc then do things like dd for line deletion, D for 'delete from here till endline', and so on. Once you're finished you press i or o or a few other options to keep adding text.
Back then Esc wasn't in a corner, so it was a sensible choice. But some nowadays guides suggest the Capslock -> Esc remap so that you don't have to strech as much
