I'm going to be working a lot on my version of it. My interpretation of making these animals 'scary' is to make them act like animals. The unpredictability and that never ending feeling of anxiety whilst a Rugops is sniffing at you.

Best example I can give is the Bear scene from Annihilation. There's always a sense of anxiety whenever you watch it because it's a creature that you'd think you'd be familiar with, but it's off.

And it's behaviours in that scene sell the unpredictability of bears really well.

I am not being sniffed at by a bear, I am watching someone be sniffed at by a bear. There is a level of dissociation present that needs to be overcome through other means.

I can watch a bear act like a bear at night. There can be a ton of effort put into making it unnerving, but at the end of the day it is still just a bear acting like a bear, you are not in the room with the bear, you are just watching a bear.

Horror works when you erode the distance between the viewer and the content, and when you unsettle them, not by showing a real world horror scenario, but by showing something so foreign it illicits a fight for flight response. Showing a dinosaur being spooky is one thing, it can be cool, but it will likely never break that mold if you remain within the bounds of being an animal.

basically, for rex, its fundamental frequency (the pitch it is trying to communicate through) would be infrasound
But through a variety of effects, like wind coming out of our mouth etc, you may hear overtones / harmonics that contribute to less dynamically impactful but still present frequencies being heared

For this context
that would be why you may hear sound when something that should be infrasound (20hz or below)
unless its a perfect sine tone

and even then

It's sort of why I'm leaning into the 'lost tapes' vibe. Since it's as challenging as it is to make these animals scary in that fashion.

It puts you into the POV of finding this tape and watching it. Sometimes, if done right, it can feel like you're not meant to be watching it. It wasn't meant for you. Or it was.

Having a documented occurrance can lead into the more disturbed horror. Similar to whenever you'd see some horrific video when scrolling the internet, and then afterwards you have a churning feeling in your stomach. It just never feels right to watch them. Which is the kind of feeling I try to envoke.

I myself ran straight into that wall when writing and throwing together edits for Apollo Files. Found footage works well at creating a sense of realism, story wise it also is a very strong tool. But you cannot rely entirely on that tool to create your horror, a documented occurrence is still just an occurrence. Showing a dinosaur acting like a dinosaur, or attacking someone, or doing pretty much whatever will be viewed as just what it is, a video intended to show off a dinosaur.

Familiarity is the death of horror. Found footage is a good foundation for immersion, but it inherently cannot be used to create horror, as it is the subject matter that determines its familiarity.

To built terror you need to kill all sense of familiarity.

So, if you want to use Isle dinosaurs, you need to make them feel alien to Isle players.

The tip I'm willing to give is to think of the Isle's dinosaurs as regular fauna. As set dressing... tell your horror story with dinosaurs as a background element, not the focus. Think outside the box, and tell an effective horror story that has nothing to do with dinosaurs, then use the dinosaurs to enrich it.

Or, at least that's what ended up working for me.

This is an issue I've run into recently with my RX 9070XT.

All I've had to do is run a cleanup tool that erases any old GPU Drivers from my system and then reinstall them. Takes about 10 mins.
