yeah we deprecated the mods because way too many broken mods floated around, causing all kind of issues for players. I've tested all the mods individually to confirm they cause some kind of issue, warranting a deprecation. All the mods are still available on TS, just hidden by default.

I've made some announcements in various modding discord, including here. There has been very little talk/complains about the deprecation and issue reports have gone down noticeably so I take this as a win

99% of mods are client side. So if Player1 has mods, Player2 don't, then P2 will not see/have any effect of the mods. So many mods will not affect a multiplayer environment, like P1 only changing inventory size. If the P2 are first into a cell where P1 has built with mods, then all kind of the trouble could arise. If both P1 and P2 has the same mods, all should be good. Make sure you read the mod-pages, to verify that mods in use, are OK in multiplayer.

I don't know what you mean by a 'solo server'. Do you mean the in-game server that you start from the game's start up menu? If you mean the in-game server, ServerDevcommands and InfinityHammer should work fnie there, too.

Almost anywhere you can install any mod, you can install ServerDevcommands and InfinityHammer. The exception would be if you have no Admin privilage for the server you're working with which could also mean you couldn't install any other mods, either.

tired crescent
# hexed goblet Correct, less noise. Only important information.

Using your own logic, ContentsWithin would be faster than your limited icons and text. Reason: The human brain recognizes images much faster than it recognizes text.

Meaning, limiting your images as in your implementation on what's inside a chest and then giving text defeats the purpose here. ContentsWithin shows the entire contents of the chest on hover...with icons.

#

your implementation would force them to read, or open the chest.

hexed goblet
# tired crescent Using your own logic, ContentsWithin would be faster than your limited icons and...

Not really, if you are looking for a specific item you use ZenSign (with VNEI if you want a full system index) then tap the sign of the item you are looking for or middle click the item you are looking for in your inventory and the chests will highlight. However, if you want a general idea of what is the majority of storage in a container ZenHoverItem gives you that. In a summary way with amount totals. Which i have found is generally more useful “this chest has 200 wood” its more useful than a grid of 50 stacks of wood and doing the math in my head.

#

Less raw data, more summary data.

#

I did tons of tests with more items on the hover. It was just noisy. 4 to 5 is a nice aesthetic because it’s just one row tight over the hover info without cluttering the UI. if the player is looking for specific thing that’s what ZenSign is for.

tired crescent

I guess that's "good" to summarize but cutting out half of the items in the chest simply because they aren't the majority of the items in it is the issue, they will need to always open the chest if they are trying to find something they are low on. A combination of the implementations would obviously be best. People can use AzuAutoStore (for 2 years now) to ping chests and click items to find more in nearby chests so that feature is nice to replicate.

Though, if people recognize images faster than text as you say, then seeing the wood icon 8 times shouldn't matter much. Seeing it once and then having to read after is just about as fast. Using a craft from container type of mod means you never have to do that math on the items, you see the totals and how much you have on hand in the menus.

#

I get that your mods are tightly coupled and implement a ton of features that other mods already have. Basically a less modular version of them.

#

Since that meets the needs of what you wanted. I'm just mostly saying different strokes for different folks. The implementation and mod they chose above is arguably just as fast and shows more needed info.

# tired crescent I guess that's "good" to summarize but cutting out half of the items in the ches...

Sure, but I wasn’t going for a craft from containers concept as I feel that accelerates gameplay too much and I wanted to provide an alternative experience for my players. One that embraced the core design concepts of Valheim but extended the usability without using magic to teleport items into the players hands. It kinda just extended from there into many other things. I got a bit engrossed in the hobby of it 😆

And yes, lots of options for people to try. Which is why I said they should give it a shot if they like the other one. I used that exact container preview mod for a long time perfectly decent mod

#

I think part of the fun of the game is organizing your storage and layout of your warehouse hoard.

#

Travel time between stations. Chests. Cooperative gameplay and crafting.

#

All that was important to me. But I felt that vanilla was too difficult to remember where everything was. Hence ZenSign. But from there I found I also needed a summary peek feature that was visual. Hence ZenHoverItem.

While a good argument, most survival games implement crafting from containers in some form due to massive customer demand for it. Most people hate games that (or hate that part of it) force them to be in the UI for long periods instead of playing the content. If you spent time farming the items, organizing, putting into chests, etc...you should at least have the ease of use to pull from them without having to find a specific chest, take it out, possibly get overencumbered and struggle to build something just as a waste of time. As seen in many games, most people really do not like the back and forth and much prefer to immediately see in the crafting stations "Can I build/make this?" without having to have it in your inventory or magically remember the thousands of items they might have that could be enough, or too little.

ZenSign, the peek feature, and the headache all go away with a simple change in mods that are more standard to survival crafting games. I respect the want to give them the same experience that Valheim does...but just take a look at the #suggestions once in awhile. MANY likes on a lot of the QOL things most other games have...or mods have already added.

hexed goblet
# tired crescent While a good argument, most survival games implement crafting from containers in...

Yea, but I am not most people. I like the manual aspect of it. I think that’s prob the most fun part of the game. Hunting monsters to me is the tedious grind, building and organizing the base is far more fun. When I installed craft from containers we were blasting through everything because it was optimizing away the maintenance aspect via magical automation. My mods suggest that perhaps the problem isn’t the concept of manual crafting and organizing things but rather the way that information is presented and accessed to the player. Getting lost in a maze of boxes sucks, but having easy access to everything and knowing where everything is, even in multiplayer, means you can divide labor and work as a team. The minigame of crafting is preserved. Valheim is at its core a collection of minigames.

#

All inventory management is an obstacle to playing the game. It's cumbersome. Its tedious. When you're like me, have OCD, and spend 90% of your time in game moving items around in your inventory and chests, it is downright painful and stressful. I need inventory management taken away from me for my own good.

hexed goblet
# kind pumice All inventory management is an obstacle to playing the game. It's cumbersome. It...

Sure, that’s what you like. I feel the opposite. I find the resource management to be soothing and essential to progression. It’s literally why there are diff sized chests. They are a function of world space volume and internal capacity. When automated all the resources just get poured into weapons and armor and no consideration is given to storage upgrades and their associate cost vs. benefit. Instead just walls of wooden chests because it’s cheap. What i aimed to do was preserve the value of storage type progression but ease navigation and make it less frustrating via my collection of mods which helps you and your friends stay organized.

However, i do agree that moving items between containers is a pita so i built ZenRedecorate so you don’t have to move items around in chests. Just move the chest itself.

#

Also, I do agree though that no inventory is best. I would prefer to have no inventory and just physically pickup and move items in my avatar’s hands instead of having storage systems. But that’s a whole diff game and not something reasonable for the way Valheim is designed.

You clearly can’t read. It’s ok. But just be more polite. I could have written the mod you asked for in an hour but you were awfully rude about it and Argus has a framework set up for server side mods so it makes more sense to be in his mod.

But really, i don’t think anyone should help you. You are just a brat. Go code it yourself.

amber bridge
#

there was no prompt that pulled up

tired crescent
#

Well, sleeping "speeds up" the time. So it kind of fits the request.

However, no, there isn't a mod that explicitly speeds up the time it takes for the night to pass besides LongerDays which just makes the speed of the day change in general. However, changing or mucking with time in Valheim actually breaks some of the core systems (like plants) that the game uses since it's using the internal time for a lot of things.

https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/TastyChickenLegs/LongerDays/

#

If you're looking for a mod like mine...without the prompt etc. It's a simple change in my code to make it pure server side only without a prompt and an immediate skip of time.

#

it would still function very similar to people sleeping.

amber bridge
#

ok ill look at these. thank you so much

hexed goblet

Just issue the console command skiptime on the server and be done with it. You don’t need any mods for that.

# fast silo Crazy how much lag there is for a game mainly about building

For a EA game, 4 years in development, un-optimised, I have no problems.
Remember that the client that are first entering a cell, is the client handleing all the calculations for the game. Many light sources, pets, plants, smoke, particles, high game details, building pieces will be have a strain on mid to low end computers/ consoles.

clear lily
#

Well, it's optimized, but Unity3d can be poopoo for fps

languid lynx

There's tons of ways to optimize your own building.
Also if you make a monstrously big building and can't stand the lag you can always convert it into a premade structure.

that certainly helps, loading less scripts is better for performance, all them piece scripts and wear&tear add up

Light, fire, smoke, creatures, water are all bad instances so those should be limited as much as possible.

sleek otter
#

yeah, but why water?

#

presumably becasue it adds a physics element, but im curious if theres more to it

languid lynx
#

It's just performance heavy so it's best to avoid building near it.

sleek otter
#

:) ok, but the best bases have easy waterway access, so i'm interested in any scrap of nuance to the why and how aspect of that. I can imagine a few fairly obvious factors. Still interested in the technical aspect of it though... especially if somehting simple like dont allow the water to touch the structure even in storm conditions or similar is all i have to do to completely mitigate the adverse effects.

#

im also a big fan of Riverheim, so not building near water is InCoNcEiVaBlE

languid lynx
#

People build and play how they want, I just mean if you're a person that want to squeeze out every bit of FPS and optimize.
It's just that light, fire, smoke, creatures, water are some of the things that are heavier on the performance.
It's not about touching water or anything, it's just being building near it.

sleek otter
#

it is known khaleesi

languid lynx
#

Like, if you build near water and it lags bad, then you put the same structure in the sky, it will massively improve FPS.

#

But that kinda makes sense though since in the sky the terrain and all is unloaded.

sleek otter
#

yeah, these things are almost alwys something logical, so if i can figure out which thing to do or not do... it would be nice. But i get it; you dont know specifically. The betlog quest for more arcane knowledge continues. - thanks

languid lynx
#

Why specifically WATER is heavy on performance?
Also I put a 2k by 2k terrain in the sky and it was like a new world 😂

sleek otter

i saw that... looks interesting

weary island
languid lynx
#

HOT DAMN

sleek otter
#

im going to run with the observstion that water imposes a fast ticrate/internal physics load to keep things on top of its surface/latched to boats, and that this is fps degrading in general... and see if i can even discern what happens next time i get a good idea and try it out on one of my 100% always near water bases.

weary island
#

Another thing about sky platforms is that there's no terrain work to do for your builds. That terrain work adds to the instance count, too.

sleek otter
#

yeah, im quite economical with my terrain instances though. i use the terrain reset tool on everything that doesnt need an accidental pick mark or gaping chasm

#

and my love for vanilla-esque kinda precludes skyboxes :)

languid lynx
#

Yeah but instances are fake though!

sleek otter
#

mhmm

languid lynx
#

Like, you don't use instance count right? 🥲

sleek otter
#

i never get them high enough to be a problem for me, and in any case wher ei have destroyed surrounding builds and reverted all the land it didnt make all that much diff regardless of instances.
I glance at it, but i dont base any decisions on it usually.

weary island
sleek otter
#

at one point i was using infinity hammer to delete all submerged stones after fast raising land, that seemed to help a little, but i was kinda hoping i had stumbled on a physics thing i could fix., nope

languid lynx
#

So when you inspect water in the code, components there's a lot of shit going on.

There's methods that calculate waves, like 10 different components for each surface calc.
There's other calculations and maths that's expensive code wise.

Everything updates every frame, like time, shader, materials.
Physics, interactions.

Water is made up in chunks "volumes" and they all need to be processed.
There's also wind components that interacts with water, waves etc.

sleek otter
#

yes. thats basically what i was originaly asking, but what you just said also fits within what i was expecting, so i guess the answer to my question is really "because obviously - when the generalities of game engines are considered"
I just saw your terrain patch and figured you might have some deep, specific insight on it. So that looks like a good answer to the original Q :)

languid lynx
#

So the terrain thing is basically just a MASSIVE terrain made in Unity and then loaded into the game as a location 😂

sleek otter
languid lynx
#

Also I LOVE Unity and prefer to make stuff in it and I don't want to sound like I know shit about code because I don't 🤣

sleek otter

yup, but you have written code for it at some level, so you know more than i do

languid lynx
#

Well, if you ever want to learn how to mod I can set you up, a 3-4 hour session would be enough.
For all Unity stuff I can teach you anything but for complex code projects you would probably need to learn yourself.

sleek otter
#

I'm guessing that would be a paid tutorial? Or do you just have a massochism kink? :)

languid lynx
#

Hell no, I would never ask for payment for helping others get into modding.
I've tough tons of people and the more modders we have the better for the game.

sleek otter
#

nice, heroes dont always wear underwear...capes

languid lynx
#

Basically what a typical session entails.

How to set up Unity with game project.
How to set up Code environment to be able to build a dll.

Then we explore the game project, learn how to view prefabs, components.
Then we would learn how to export prefabs into a new project to build a mod.

Stuff like that 😄

sleek otter

i assume it would be from a windows development environment perspective?

Yes, you can replace it with the UpgradeWorlds mod's Locations_reset command. You might need to know the official prefab name of the location. I think it's got the word 'temple' in it but I don't recall the actual name. Read the instructions for that mod and it'll give you more info about how to proceed with it.

Also, I'm not totally sure the Locations_reset command is the right one. It might be Locations_add or another one of those. And it might matter where you're standing when you give the command. Not sure.

But that gives you an idea of where to look for the solution while you wait for someone else who would be more knowledgeable about it to provide more detailed instructions for you.

worldly garnet
# devout gazelle If the client is using Server Devcommands mod, then that sends commands to serve...

That's good info, Jere. Thanks for that. It would explain how those console command alerts got into the server's log file. And it could be significant to what I'm trying to do.

So, how likely is it that someone wanting to be able to do console commads on a server, when they aren't admin, would have to use the ServerDevcommands mod on their client?

Do all or most of the Valheim cheat engines and 'trainer' mods out there publicly available on the internet, require the ServerDevcommands mod on the client to be able to work?

Because, if so, then it becomes significantly likely that a server only mod to flag those server log command messages to a discord server would actually be hugely useful on a server that wants to support Xbox users because the crossplay platform can't do that with the existing anti-cheat options all requiring client mods.

That opens up the possibility then that there might be a mod already flagging these messages to discord? Or that it might be possible to get someone to create one? Maybe? Please?

None, you cannot prevent mods on a client without an anti-cheating mod on the clients

#

It could be possible to create a server-only mod that looks for signs of suspicious activity/signs of client mods and log them or send them to a discord or whatever, but none exist atm. And it would probably always be possible to circumvent that with a client side mod quite easily.

worldly garnet
#

Ok, then so we just have to make sure there's no PC users on the crossplay server and no Xbox users on the PC server. Great options there.

I guess I'll just go back to not creating a public server at all and just allowing close friends to join any servers I do create. As the game probably intended in the first place.

No one gets caught cheating, when there's no way to catch them at it. You can only assume so much when the day/time of the destruction isn't recorded or noted on a timely basis. Which can easily happen with a casual server populated by players with daytime jobs and/or classes to keep them out of the game for most of the day.

And, if the destruction goes on for a couple days without notice, the backups don't help for 'fixing' it. Reputation systems are no help at all when the deed is already done.

clear lily
#

Right, so the way most servers prevent that is make clients require a modpack that want to play there, as mods can be used to prevent that very thing.

#

simply trying to join that server without the required mods prevents their connection, there are ward mods and mods to prevent players from breaking peoples things, there is also servercharacters that prevents bringing in items.

#

I mean, if you're server isn't running Anticheat then might as well just give someone admin perms

Thanks, guys for your replies. But the whole idea was to find a solution that would support the crossplay platform on a 'public', i.e. strangers who passed an interview prior to an invite, to a dedicated server in order to include Xbox players. Requiring any mods on clients prevents that.

I would not want it to be occupying a utility slot because I like to wear the belt and have light at the same time.

#

I like the challenge. I would not want it to be on the belt. Fortunately there is a mod for you to have it on your belt.

#

I don’t like automation

rough peak
#

I just don't think light hurdles like that and that mentality to continue to proport those hurdles is good game design. Especially when the thing you use to overcome them is added at the tail end of the game in an environment that literal cancer to get through. The very thing you just said about utility counters what you said about how it's implementation the way it is serves as a balance to the current system. If these hurdles are actually worth preserving then the give and take game design for upgrades to the player can just be shifted to "before you had to give up an armor slot or lose a shield to use this basic item, now you can give up being able to carry more things to be able to see more at night." It's the same system, just applied differently.

hexed goblet

Also, you get the lantern in mist lands. But there are two biomes after that.

I hear you that you don’t like it. But I do. Your design ideas work for you. Cool

# hexed goblet Night is supposed to be harder. That’s by design.

I do not disagree that light is an important aspect of the game. But the idea that what I ask is somehow antithetical to this concept is simply wrong. It's an upgrade that you get in the third act of the game. An upgrade that doesn't come without consequences, however I feel as though those consequences are too severe for what it offers. There are too many two handed weapons in the game that force you to basically not use the lantern on your person. When all it does is let you see a little bit more. The trade off of seeing a little bit more is, not having one third of your armor (which isn't even worth it because of 50% of the light is obscured by your player model) or switching your build half way through the game to use something that literally just give you a bit more light in your surroundings. Light that attracts mobs to you too btw. If this was acquired early on in the bronze age then sure, it would hurt the early game (i still disagree because we're talking about a literal lantern), but it being in the last third of the game is crazy. It's like complaining that the magic system is bad because it functions too similarly to guns. However, the trade off is losing a piece of your armor or switch out your armor entirely to be able to use this insane power more efficiently. The magic addition can be build defining. You could go through using Atgiers all game then switch to magic in the last third and it make sense because it's powerful. But you're being asked to switch out a piece of armor or a shield to be able to see a little bit more. That just doesn't make sense, nor does that even come close to breaking the game and the way it's played if implemented how I'm asking.

rough peak
#

I'm saying that most people wouldn't be opposed to my suggestion, and I think it should've been this way at release for the aforementioned reasons above. What you say about why it shouldn't be this way doesn't make sense.

#

You also did say that it wasn't valid because there were other alternatives.

#

(you didn't say it but you implied it)

#

Also, my thesis statement was that "if this was implemented the way I asked initially, then no one would have cared." Especially since the addition would've come in the last third of the game.

hexed goblet
#

Ok got it. You want belt lanterns in vanilla and you assert that most people agree with you. I like vanilla hand held lanterns and using the same statistical argument of “making up stuff” I also assert that most people would agree with me. Because reasons.

This is so goofy. Just use the mod. It does what you want.

rough peak
#

I didn't say that they "just agree with me because I said so." I laid out an argument using game design and hypothetical. An arguement that you didn't engage with because i'm right. Not being able to equip a lantern on your belt while using both your hands ask too much from you for what it does, as well as the other convenient light sources in the game.

hexed goblet
#

Btw, you know you can put the vanilla lantern on your belt right ? I mean this is built into the base game already. So I am not sure what your point is

#

Just press R while holding it

rough peak
#

Bro... you cannot use both hands with it equipped... that is the crux of my issue with it. As i've stated, multiple times.

#

Using it on your belt in that instance is more cosmetic than it is functional.

hexed goblet
#

I’m. It interested in arguing with you over a pedantic silliness. Just use the mod. Or use vanilla R or write your own mod. You are never going to convince me that I don’t enjoy the vanilla implementation of lanterns.

rough peak
#

You're not interested in engaging with my argument because I'm right.

hexed goblet
#

lol do you think someone is right or wrong ? Are you joking ? It’s my preference. I have used belt lantern. I do not like it.

#

It’s a fine mod. Just not my preference

rough peak
#

You literally implied that what I'm asking for is incorrect because of game design reasons. "it would trivialize the dark, the night is too important to allow such easy things to be added in vanilla, a lot of people would not want this addition." So I argued with you why these points are wrong and you just didn't rebuttal them. You can have opinions or preferences and just be wrong when your justification is wrong or doesn't make sense.

hexed goblet
#

For you it sounds like the perfect mod to do what you like. Please download and install it.

rough peak
#

I will install it.

#

unless cookie makes a better one ofc

#

eheheeh

hexed goblet
#

I never implied anything. I never once said you were wrong. I only said that I disagree that all players would like to play the game with lanterns the way you want. I know this to be a fact because I am a player that does not want lanterns like you since I like vanilla style

languid lynx
#

Yeah, because that's what you asked for because I don't dictate how you can play the game.
Doesn't matter if people agree or not, this is how you want to play.

rough peak
#

You literally did imply that what I'm asking for would disrupt the game from a game design and fundamental level, which implies that what I'm asking for is wrong for the vanilla game. I said, I do not think that it would disrupt the game or the game design.

hexed goblet
#

I agree. Play how you want. I never said not to use a belt lantern. Am I in the twilight zone or something ?

rough peak
#

then the argument from both our standpoints began.

hexed goblet
#

Omg stop making assumptions. I never implied anything. I literally said I, me, I, me like to play with the vanilla style.

rough peak
#

If you read the flow of conversation, this is just how this went..

#

How is me saying that what you said, "this is not good for game because the night is too important from this game design perspective," an assumption for you saying that what I'm asking for is bad from a game design perspective and making the intuitive leap that what I'm asking for is wrong for the game???

hexed goblet
#

This is so dumb. You want belt lanterns. A mod exists for that. Great. Use it. I just commented that I like vanilla style. And you went off on a while design argument about how u are right and that I must agree with you and I implied blah blah blah. Twilight zone stuff right here.

rough peak
#

Also, this mod would allow you to craft the lantern in the bronze age, which if what you said is true, would cause some issues with the game design...

hexed goblet
#

I literally am not here to have a design conversation with you. I said why I like vanilla lanterns. Why I think the designers did a good job. You have a mod that implements them how you want already. What’s the issue ? You don’t like people thinking things differently than you ?

rough peak
hexed goblet
#

I didn’t say ur wrong to want what you want. I offered some vanilla alternatives. Engaged with the convo a little bit to explain why I like the vanilla style. That was it. You can’t just let a person like it vanilla style huh ? Gotta be “right?”

rough peak
#

The implication of "this would break the design of the base game if you want this in vanilla" is that I'm wrong if I want this in the base game if I want it in vanilla because it would break the game design...

hexed goblet
#

I did not say that

rough peak
#

You just fundamentally don't understand how the conversation went.

hexed goblet
#

You fundamentally don’t understand how the conversation went.

#

You make to many assumptions

#

I am literally just saying to your comment that “all players would agree with you” that in fact no. All players would not agree with you and then I submit an example. Me

#

Then I explain why I feel the way I do. I never once said you were wrong or invalid

#

I do not believe you are capable of understanding that people have a perspective other than your own. And that’s ok. 👍

rough peak
#

Obviously you didn't directly say that but questioning why I don't use the alternatives in the base game, to then saying that the lantern works fine in the vanilla and that I would get push back for suggesting it be implemented like this in vanilla, then going on to say that the darkness in the game works fine as a game play mechanic and then saying that the implementation of the functionality of this device would disrupt this perfectly executed mechanic implies, if taken to the logical conclusion of the arguement, that I'm wrong for wanting the functionality of the lantern to be changed because it would break the game design on some level due to the importance of the way darkness functions in game. This is literally what you said and I simply just connected the pieces of this very clear argument you laid out. I then pushed back against it because I think that what you said is wrong.

hexed goblet
#

Are you serious ? Do you see how much conversation you are having with your imagination of things u think I said ?

rough peak
#

Bro... I reread this conversation three times to see if I'm wrong and I'm not. I could sit here and point to everything you said to prove how delusional you are.

hexed goblet
#

I am going to be really blunt. Use whatever you want. I never cared. I offered some thoughts on the topic. I never told you otherwise.

rough peak
#

I'm not arguing that you said I should or shouldn't use the mod. this was never mentioned. Only cookie mentioned this. We are arguing about whether it should function the way i'm asking in vanilla, which you said you disagree with and then laid out an arguemtn as to why. I then laid out my argument as to why you are wrong...

#

Now you're going on about how you didn't tell me to use or not use the mod. I never said you did say that. Why would I care if you did or didnt??

hexed goblet
#

Yes I do disagree that it should NOT change in vanilla. I like vanilla implementation and I do not feel like arguing that the vanilla implementation is good or correct because it’s the way it is. If you want diff behavior mod it.

rough peak
#

And I'm arguing that the way it is, is bad for the reasons I listed earlier...

hexed goblet
#

I just was explaining WHY I like vanilla style

rough peak
#

And that it does need to be changed.

hexed goblet
#

Ok cool. Well, you go ahead and tell the devs to change it and when they do let me know.

#

I think vanilla should have target lock. But the devs didn’t do that either.

rough peak
#

And I explained why the reasons you gave don't make sense under the slightest bit of scrutiny. Which should make you think... huh, this is a pure asthetic belief and I either need to think of new reasons or say... yeah it is kind of too much of an ask of the player to give up a shield or one third of their armor to even be able to reasonably see at night.

hexed goblet
#

You literally want me to argue with you about this don’t you ? It’s like a game for you.

rough peak
hexed goblet
rough peak
hexed goblet
#

Well then your hip lantern should be togglable huh .?

rough peak
#

I mean togglable as in, it wouldn't make sense to force the playerbase to use it when you are constantly fighting multiple enemies at once but on bosses (like in elden ring or dark souls) it makes perfect sense.

#

I don't think the game needs either of these changes, but one is way more aggrecious in terms of what it's asking for than the other. Needs as in immediate implementation.

hexed goblet
# rough peak we have been arguing... you said what you believed and why. I said what i believ...

It’s not a belief I feel you are entitled to my energy to explain. I know what I know due to many long hours studying the game and modding it. I have explored the idea of a hip lantern and I have considered writing an extension to one of my mods to put it on the hip. It’s nothing I haven’t explored. I may in fact do it one day. I just do not see any reason that the existing behavior shouldn’t continue to exist. Attaching it to the belt would make it so that you can use a sword and shield or bow at the same time. Which means head lantern is less useful. Having to juggle the lantern in off hand means multiplayer games require one player to hold the lantern. Which is good. There are pros and cons to each approach. After countless hours studying this subject in more detail than you will care to know I came to the conclusion that vanilla is fine and has enough merits and challenges that I understand why it is the way it is.

hexed goblet
#

Also moving furniture around like chests without destroying them should be in vanilla. But it isn’t. So many things missing from vanilla. A lantern on the hip however is, after long consideration, something I think isn’t that important because the current implementation adds a bit of dynamic challenge whereas no target lock or no ability to move furniture around is an actual impediment to usability.

#

Btw, ZenTargeting and ZenRedecorate both let you do these things. Just like HipLantern lets you do what you want with the lantern.

#

Anyhow. After this convo. I may revisit that old code and make it so you can put the lantern on the belt as a config option. Like I said. I already explored this.

#

It detracts from the challenge and nullifies the head lantern and makes multiplayer less teamwork though which is why I didn’t continue down that path. Plus hip lantern already exists.

rough peak
#

"It's not a belief that I feel I need to explain," but you did explain it and what you explained didn't hold any water. The head lantern was already useless when it took over one third of your armor and had most of it's light be obscured by your player model. However, the head lantern is unlocked way earlier than the potential belt lanter so I would disagree. It would just be an upgrade, and an extreme one at that since you got your armor back, to the head lantern. It being "fine" and it being "acceptable" are two different things. Of course there are multiple facets to this but I was strictly talking about PC and single player. However, I personally do not think that forcing a player to give up a shield or one third of their armor for a light source is "fine" or good game design. Target lock for controller players takes priority over belt lantern but belt lantern in its current state is still bad and what it asks you to do it for what you get is bad. The areas of the game that would require the secondary player to use a light source and be a glorified lamp post is in the earlier stages of the game (excluding PVP), meaning that you would one shot most mobs. Thus making this more of an upgrade and quality of life change. This is all if I agree that balancing light in this game past a certain point is considered one of the challenging markers for the game. I just don't believe that the lantern being on the belt would break any aspect of the game design because of the place that it is at in the game when you gain access to it. If this was in the bronze age as this mod allows for then I'd be more inclined to agree strictly because it's too advanced and too useful for that age. However, this does not apply to the abilities that you gain from the mistlands. 1/2

#

We're talking about a point in the game where you essentially gain access to guns. 2/2

hexed goblet
rough peak
#

Also first sentence is in reference to what you said previously, not what you said in that most recent statement.

hexed goblet
#

I did not elaborate everything before because I didn’t care that much about the convo. Still don’t care that much. But you seem to need to understand me

rough peak
#

Your inability to understand the convo up until this point is the only reason it continued.

#

My fault, i won't respond anymore til you're done

hexed goblet
#

I always understood the convo. Your part and mine. Again, my only point was that the vanilla system has merits. Most are not obvious though. I do not view things that make the game easier as QoL.

#

An always on omnidirectional light source that makes my hands free and costs no fuel means I do not ever need to craft lights and that darkness is nerfed. That’s fine if you enjoy that. I do not wish to play that way

rough peak
#

By definition things that make the game easier in unnecessary ways are QoL. Now we're just getting into game play philosophy when it comes to the head lantern but the headlantern is borderline useless. Being able to see 10 meters in front of you and use a bow is not a good trade for ONE THIRD OF YOUR ARMOR BEING REDUCED. That's like saying in a rogue like taking 20% more dmg but doing 3% more dmg is good. The headlantern is bad and only gets worse the more you progress through the game, thus making a belt lantern the most obvious and best upgrade as being able see at night stops mattering past the black forest. The game isn't dark. it's not like rust or anything and while light sources do stop spawning it's not like you're going to forgo making torches at your base or brazers just because you have a lantern on your belt. it's just silly because from a pure cosmetic issue you'd want light sources around your base so it looks good and makes sense. I do not think people would spend 90 hours getting to the mistlands, get the lantern, then think, now I can take down all those torches or brazers I put up...

#

Unless you can point in a line of code or use data that pressing r and having the lantern on your hip currently stops monsters from spawning close enough to even threaten you then this game play narrative is all wrong anyway and means that allowing to be a equipable on your belt is just overall better..

hexed goblet
#

Armor loss is the trade off. Or build fireplaces for light. Or have a friend hold the torch

#

I enjoy that dynamic

#

I would not enjoy the lantern on the belt. I hear you think it would be better. That is a subjective statement. It would be better FOR YOU. I quite like the fact that I have to decide between shield, helmet, or building something for light source. Also I do not want infinite light fuel on my belt with omnidirectional glow.

#

Fortunately a mod exists for your needs. So win win

Since you left out that this world are on a dedicated server, that you haven't mod, nor have you ever modded before (and don't have time to look up a youtube video of how to do it), the 3 options you have are:

  1. Get some high level players to join your world, to help you out.
  2. Start grind over and again from what ever you have left at your home base.
  3. Start a new world.

Edit: My comment was reply to @earnest iris that deleted his post before mine was posted

There is Pins -> Show map pins config to disable map pins entirely.
And for other request I'm not sure if I get it right. Do you want to alter the vanilla map view, interactive one, not the fixed version the mod provides? In that case it actually requires changing the map shader, which is far beyond my competence.
Or you want to be able to see generated map in game while regular map is also enabled?
As for

select between the various display modes any time i want
If you mean to change the variants of generated fixed map that's doable but it will make map generation longer and more resource consuming. I don't think it is really needed but maybe.

sleek otter

Pins -> Show map pins
gotcha. I probably should have remembered that, i was using it breifly earlier to get topological data of an area, but otherwsie havent used it for months.
I was asking if its possible to replace the vanilla map view, interactive one, so i guess that answers my question :) Pity, it'd be my preference for display modes.

topiming is so you dont have to dig up the ground hunting for all the parts. doesnt really help with speed. impactfulskills is probably more of what you want

marsh vale

remove requipme then, extraslots has that feature

sleek otter
# pliant jasper I tried top mining but still way too slow.

if you have advancedTerrainModifiers you can use the lowerground_v2/shovel to dig with. Normally I limit its radius to 5m, but 20m is the max. Either way it makes it fairly quick to excavate an entire node, destroying it in a few hits if you can dig deep enough to suspend it mid-air, and then use the ATMs undo terrain to revert the massive hole, or not. Pairs well with buildCameraCHE

FYI: one of my server's mac players recently used https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/Omnivore/OmnivoreModManager/ to get my modpack working (89 mods) on his mac.
Afaik the only hurdle was converting the modmanager .r2x/z yml formatting to a TS modpack manifest json format, they can then load this either from URL or a local json. The only reason this was an issue is because i change the modpack often enough that i don't bother to upload it to TS, and just export it fresh any time i need to give it to someone.
So when people say they can't use mods on mac, thats increasingly less true.

pliant jasper
hexed goblet
#

yes, that's what it's for

#

it makes it so you can change the layout of things without breaking everything

#

but it doesn't let you move walls. it's literally for redecorating.

#

and no, you can't cheat with it.

pliant jasper
#

Yeah, Ill give it a go.

#

There should be a mod to specifically disable troll raids before you can unlock turrets or stone walls. Getting your base flattened by a troll raid after just beating elder is not fun

hexed goblet
#

ZenRaids

pliant jasper
#

Can you specifically disable just trolls?

hexed goblet
#

well no, but you can disable them per biome. if you want to disable just troll raids that's prob suited to one of the other raid mods that give a finer grain control.

pliant jasper
#

I also dont know if I like the fire light mechanic of that mod.

hexed goblet
#

sure, it's not for everyone, i found that there is a lot of fun in keepign the fires lit. but not everyone likes that.

#

it gives them more utility than just light.

#

also it creates a resource sink

pliant jasper
#

I literally have a mod to make all fires and torches burn forever. Just not a chore im interested in

hexed goblet
#

yup, not for you.

pliant jasper
#

Im really struggling to keep interest in the game tbh. Idk what my solution is.

hexed goblet
#

you don't find you end up with an insane amount of resin doing nothing?

#

i found i got bored when i automated everything because then there was nothing left to do. it's when i embraced vanilla and extended it for QoL that i found it enjoyable again.

#

all the minigames are part of the fun imo

#

inventory management, hoard management, keeping torches lit, cooking, farming, mining, etc. when i automated away everything and focused on fighting only it became stale and i found that if i just wanted to fight monsters i was better off playing a monster fighting game.

#

hence... i focused on the issues that were bothing me.. it wasn't the manual process of things, it was how clunky it was to do the manual processes... so once i streamlined them.. made it easier to do those manual chores - manually. it became fun for me again.

pliant jasper
#

My problem is, I already did vanilla... I have 360 hours. Idk what I actually want anymore, because I dont find the combat difficult. Its very rudimentary combat. I enjoy the survival grind, and like building bases even though Im not a good builder. But I eventually get bored of the early game grind to get the part of the game that is actually fun.

hexed goblet
#

btw: i like the early game grind, i think it's fun being in the bronze age.

#

its too short imo

pliant jasper
#

Like I see other people play the game, and it excites me and makes me want to play the game again, then I get in and spend 4-6 hours just to get to bronze and im bored.

hexed goblet
#

i dunno.. to me it's fun to build a log cabin and decorate it.. i don't really care what age i'm in. it's enjoyable to be creative with whatever tools i have.

#

what i find is i often want "one more piece of xxx so that i can build yyy" so that creates a quest...

#

i see many people focus on "the optimal way to play" and they rush through and go straight to iron so they can build whatever... kill whomever... then push through to get the next goal.. checklist... homework... i find that to be no fun at all. rushing bosses..etc. which is why, turning off maps, increasing the risk of getting lost and having setbacks ... having to juggle light fuel...etc. all the little obstiacles so that i can get the resources i need to build my little house... THAT's fun for me.

pliant jasper
#

I actually wish it was more in line with minecraft tbh. Like the early game doesnt take that long, you get the point where you are scouring the world for the more rare resources and just being creative and building cool stuff.

hexed goblet
#

being forccd to build paths... use carts...etc. all that "tedium" is the fun of a job well done for the construction of whatever i imagined.

#

i never played minecraft.. dunno

pliant jasper
#

Like when I think about the tedium of hauling a cart through the black forest to mine out a copper node, in my mind it sounds cool. Then I get in the game and it's the last thing I want to do. Idk what my problem is.

hexed goblet
#

doesn't sound like a problem, maybe you just don't want to play this game right now. that's ok too.

#

or just put the game into nocost mode and build whatever you want

pliant jasper
#

The problem is there is no game I want to play right now. I want to play something, but as soon as I boot up the game I just lose all interest.

hexed goblet
#

ya, i hear ya. many games do that for me. I had a lot of fun recently with Donkey Kong Bananaza .. i was surprised i liked it.

pliant jasper
#

If someone could somehow mash up valheim and elden ring, I would have like 1500 hours of a game I could play.

hexed goblet
#

sure, it would be fun, i agree.

pliant jasper

The problem is the limited combat system valheim has. The movement and attacks are so telegraphed and 2 dimensional in comparison.

@sleek otter You can now change the order of the Player, ID, Cords but Action will always be last.
You can add new lines between the player, id, cords.
You can put action on a new line or not.
You can define how often the ping and cords appear.

@hexed goblet Is it possible that AzuAutoStore is causing items to be "Eaten" when using your item stand mod? I had a pair of enchanted Scholars Robes from Wizardry that dropped from a boss. I got home and used my keybind to store in nearby containers and it seems to have vanished from my inventory. It doesnt appear to be in the item stand

#

Destroying the item stand also doesnt seem to drop any invisble items.

#

Not sure if its even your mod, just curious.

hexed goblet
#

sure, makes sense, they are virtual containers. If AutoStore is pushing items into the containers then they would be deleted the next time the Stand is opened since the containers are transitory and are rewritten every time the container opens from the actual underlying Stand data. Check if AutoStore has a way to exclude prefabs.

pliant jasper

Can the mod Zenmap be tweaked to make it so one discovers map normally, instead of the cartography table ...self exploring for you? I'm looking forward to a low-map run and LOVE the idea of craftable maps, but I and my friends as well would prefer the mapping be done per player instead of by the table. I read through it but i didn't see the settings that would enable something like that.

languid lynx
#

Anyone here that runs multiple Valheim servers?

sleek otter

sort of. I use two user accounts on a linux box to run two servers, almost never with players concurrently though, mostly just to transition between dead worlds and new servers, or test stuff while the other actively hosts

sleek otter
# rare fjord Can the mod Zenmap be tweaked to make it so one discovers map normally, instead ...

try https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/shudnal/NomapPrinter/
Share cartography is a binary on/off global option, so individual is the default iirc
The map is static until you update at a table, so if you want the vanilla GPS pin of where you are you have to bring a carto table with you; which is practical in a ship.
I really like topological maps, for deciding where to put bigass bases...and becasue they are just better.
Only issue is the pins aren't overlayed, they are hardrendered into the map image, so they can be a bit fugly as you zoom.
I'm not entirely sure how perfectly it works in a with-map server, but I have used it to take topologicval snapshots of entire worlds. So it works, but may have personally undesirable quirks.
It certainly adds a layer of realism to using your map though.

sleek otter
#

i like less layers of abstraction too

languid lynx
#

Isn't having to use two Linux accounts more layers 😂

sleek otter
#

its one less layer than having a control page

and severasl less than running them in vms on a single/multiple user shells

and seriously useful for people who are only learning how to use the host's abstraction layer

languid lynx

# rare fjord Can the mod Zenmap be tweaked to make it so one discovers map normally, instead ...

ZenMap lets you craft a copy of what the table has explored. Tables take time to explore, this makes it so you can't just dump a table down every time you want to see a map. You have to be intentional. The reason it is the table and not your explored area map is that if you can craft your own map but it's a map of the explored area of the player then what have you got ? just the normal map with a bunch of snake lines zig zagging all throughout it. Nothing special about that, might as well just leave the map vanilla at that point. But when the map table explores a radius around itself you get big beautiful full sized color maps that can be snapshotted and put into an inventory item and used later. They are snapshots of a part of the world, not a GPS. Each map can have a name to help you identify them. Just curious: have you tried using ZenMap as it's designed or did you just read the description?

you can use it with normal map mode though, disable the nomap flag in world modifiers and turn off the config setting to enable nomap automatically on startup. (you may also need to turn off the nomap flag on your player depending on your player profile state) You will still have craftable pins and autotracking things but the cartography table will behave vanilla at that point.

@languid lynx
ok so it is accepting config from client, but is it intended to ignore that when displaying only ping and coords?

Player: [Player] (ID: [ID]) at coordinates: [Coords] is displaying for ping and location even when i specify
[Player] @ [Coords] as the output format

Oh right, yeah specifically ping and coords events seems to be excluded but I will fix that.

FYI; YABL was instrumental just now in fixing a 100 ironscraps and backpack loss due to really bad network of one of the crew. So nice to know it helps me see if people are being honest, AND i can use it to do admin rectifications of snafu events.

@languid lynx #mods-screenshots message How is this implemented? Are you only only communicating with the running game server or with the infrastructure? containerizied or working directly with host os? Selfhostable?

The ServerControl is a Web + Discord bot asp.net app.
I host it on a VPS the same way I host my current Discord bot.

Hi, I am trying to find a nice vanilla plus modpack, but whatever I have found so far on google says those packs are discontinued (or something similar).

Darn. For some reason even as admin, I cant build kiln on wood. In previous modded playthroughs I could but for some reason this run aint letting me.

Turns out the reason I never had this problem in past runs is because I always disabled structural integrity.

Not this time tho hehehehe

@sleek otter Updated Zen.ModLib v1.2.6 to use forward slashes in the zip file. But i have no way to test it on linux. Please verify that the zip file is working correctly for you now.

do you mean Valheim+ ? It's not recommended to use that anymore. There are many better alternatives available that you can find on Thunderstore. If you mean Vanilla with extended QoL stuff and don't mean Valheim+ then you can try out the mods I made. They offer a lot of QoL improvements while sticking close to Vanilla ideology. I have a ready to play modpack called ZENHEIM that you can find on Thunderstore.

I have a question regarding tweaking EpicLoot, we turned down general item drops to be very low but wanted treasure maps to have higher tier mats/higher item drop rate. Is this possible?
Either way, i think i'm nearing the end of this run, really only kept EpicLoot for the bounties/treasure map system but i've found an alternative so yeah
