Run around in black forest till you find a vegvisir either in a dungeon or an abandoned building, your character will get turned towards the boss, so if you keep going in a straight line you should eventually find The Elder.
If you find 2 or 3 vegvisirs you could try triangulation to pinpoint it more.

People have posted various designs on youtube that are supposed to be pretty effective. How good they are depends on what you’re looking for.

I saw some wooden structures too, but those might be outdated. It might take some looking around. Also it’ll probably be much harder or impossible to farm most of the later fish types beyond the meadows and black forest, if you were after any of those.

Worth noting however, a tight lattice pattern on a roof/upper level ends up causing a heavier load... so do NOT do something like this unless you want to only be up one floor or plan to have uprights ever square.

I meant that seeing the old ashlands with the surtlings crawling around that makes a different scenario which you can't get anymore.

That's how the old Mistlands was, too. It's interesting from a history perspective, but if you really like your current world and want to play all the actual content, you should avoid the Deep North. You could always make a backup or a testing world and go fly up there to explore if you really want.

They’re usually not spread in anything like an ideal formation, but at least there’s a similar spacing between them. I like to put an IN portal and an OUT portal at either end if it doesn’t actually loop around.

you want the ground around the geyser to be flat and just underwater. I like to build earthen walls in a square around it to prevent the surtlings from escaping. (they'll try, when they start taking damage.)

Does anyone know how restoring auto backup of world + character is supposed to work? I tried restoring for both character and world at a particular time earlier in the day. It seems like the state of the world and state of my character's inventory matches that time the game saved, but I'm dumped in a random spot in my base, not out on a different island where I expected.

for some reason starting today whenever i would save and quite my world would behave as if it didnt save and revert bact to several older saves, but the map would retain the new discoveries i made and my character would still have all my current equipment so i decided to look into it and found someone say that the issue was with steam cloud saves, but found my saves and characters all gone with the setting turned off so i decided to reenable it and try and revert the save through the "Manage Saves" tab but now having done so my save is like this and cant fix it anymore

i still have plenty of backups and every one has the .db and .fwl file but cant find any that are not in backup form

Coming back to Valheim after a break, I run a GPortal dedicated server for a handful of friends. I have restarted my server, but each time I try to join the server it gives a "Incompatible version" error. Do I have to manually update gamefiles to bring my server up to current, or is that something GPortal does for the Valheim servers? If I have to ... I have forgotten where to even find the current files to update my GPortal server with?

I am not on 'public testing branch', I have NEVER used mods, and had used the console once, when Mistlands launched, to update the terrain near my base. I have a 2000+ in-game day world... I've been playing this world since launch of Mistlands.
My problem: Recently noticed that manual saves are not working. As in, they aren't showing up in the "manage save" section in-game. Neither are they showing up in my steam userdata folder. Just the autosaves are working. Did I miss an update or something? Any help in resolving my issue, or pointing me in the right direction, is much appreciated.

I have encountered a similar issue. Though my game does save when I log out. The manual save is not working. I tried disabling the steam cloud storage, and it just removes all the savegame data. I left it alone after that.

I take 2-4 boars out into the wild and dump them in a pit and floor over it, that way even if all get killed in your base you have a backup and if you put it out far enough that they are out of render distance and you don't go there often they will be even safer.

Such a pen should suffice for a few boars like 4-6 and can be quite safe, you could put trees nearby like oaks so that the branches extend over the pen, less chance for the m to get hit by bats and or drakes, you can completely enclose them and they will still breed.

Only plants need to be under the sun, bees also like the sun but can be covered for a bit.

Nope, you need to find a 2 star wolf to get 2 star offspring.
To catch one you need to be in the mountains at night.
I advice to dig a hole and put a floor over it and make a stair out of it but that doesn't touches the ground, so you can jump on it but the wolf can't follow.
Lure the wolf on top of the floor, destroy it so the wolf drops in the pit, toss in meat and run away, sneak closer and sit near it so that you are close but the wolf doesn't get aggro.
You can make a second pit to park yourself in.

Player Base structures won't allow enemies to spawn in a 20m radius. Workbenches show that radius, but other things like standing torches, portals, campfires, etc. all count as well

Campfires are often the easiest. Lowest weight resource cost, they don't have to be lit to block spawns, and enemies do not target them by default like they do almost all other base structures. Plus you can build them without a bench.

It's a world modifier, it only applies if you click it on. Same as teleporting metals or free build cost

I encountered a bug when I was playing the new update with friends in multiplayer, another friend joined us and he didn't want to create a new character so he used an old one, but when he killed the troll, a second invisible version of him appeared, which constantly created a ragdoll, so when someone comes close, the game slows down to 1 frame per second, can someone help us because the last backup was 7 hours ago Edit i repeird it by going in to debug mode end killing all mobs end deliting all drops

It's iron, shouldn't be a problem there. Bronze is the minimum axe tier needed to chop down oak and birch trees, anything above that will naturally be able to as well.

#dedicated-server might be of more help, but if you can download and upload the world you might be able to download it, change the settings in local single-player, and then re-upload it with the changed settings.

If it's crossplay then you're sending everything through Microsoft's servers, with the attendant lag. Otherwise it should use direct client connections, but the server itself doesn't do much work. Clients do all the game management for all players in the area if they are the chunk master, so you can be limited by the network and pc performance of any single player.

The actual mechanics if anyone cares is that a wolf is spawned, then there's a 10% chance that it could have a star, then if it has a star it is rolled again for a 10% chance that it will have and additional star.

I created a new world in ~January so well past Mistlands release. My son and I got into the Mistlands a few days ago and our first landing spot seemed fine and generated enough Infested Mines to get us started. We don't get to play too often so we have 2x resources and were using map generators to find the best Mistlands to land in.

I think we cleared 3 mines nearest to our landing spot and as we attempted to discover more (need more Sealbreaker Fragments) they were not present in the areas previously identified by the map generator although the first 3 were.

We went to 2 other Mistlands that should have had 4+ mines each and nothing. We methodically explored in a grid pattern to make sure.

You can see in the images how the locations that were supposed to have a mine are appearing. The ones that were supposed to be stairs style entry are just big divots in the ground and the ones that were supposed to be broken Dvergr structures are just plain ground inside.

Any ideas? With 2x resources we are ok to prep for Ashlands this way but we do need more Sealbreaker Fragments for Queen and I'm concerned if this world is loading oddly the Ashlands will be even more buggy.

Network errors are hard to diagnose, could be a firewall issue or some other reason that your connection is being dropped. You should each check in your player.log files to see if there is any relevant information when you get disconnected.

If you're trying to prevent spawns, the Brazier is decorative and works for that, and you can place campfires around elsewhere and they prevent spawns even if they aren't lit

Vertical all the way to the ground, play with snap points to clip them into the ground if they don’t quite reach. They should turn blue but the system sometimes shows green. Anyway use those about every 3rd or 4th 2m wall section beginning with the corners. Then also do that with central parts of building if not set on ground.

I have two PCs at home. I've tried joining a few random servers from both PCs just to see if I get asked for a password which I did on one of the PCs. The other one gets failed to connect everytime. It's through the xbox game pass.

Both PCs run the game with the ashlands preview patch. I checked the version number so they are both using the same.

Both PCs are connected to a switch (not a router). I've tried to turn off the windows firewall but got the same result, not able to connect to any server.

No, they're always down to one of the above given reasons. Raids, random spawns in unprotected areas, planted in the wrong biome or too close together.

I went to pick my carrots and turnips and 3 skeletons were inside my fenced farm. Forgot to place a workbench to keep them from spawning. They destroyed all the crops. I have also watched random black forest creatures wander through at night and never attack anything. Just out for stroll.

Now I switched settings to passive so I could practice building without worry while I await Ashlands. Great way to enjoy the game for me while I wait and stockpile materials. Learn how to build properly and compactly, etc.

The food needs to be in the exact spot near their snout, else they can't reach the food, it is sometimes hard to get it at the right spot.

Nope. The music is a feature there, not a bug 😉 It's just a general happening around a POI, you can't change it as far as I know.

That sounds like his machine is crashing or his computer isn't saving things properly... tell him to change his character to a local save instead of a cloud save and that might help.

If you move it to local it won't go with your Steam account to other computers, and will dependent on local backups instead of Steam managing the files. But those are the only downsides.

The only hard lock bosses in the game are Moder and the Queen, but in general you should do them all in order as any working around it is usually more difficult than doing it in the intended order, and typically only an exercise for advanced players.

Yup. You can battle them at any time if you have the appropriate materials, but you likely won't have a good time. Food is paramount in Valheim, and you will need the resources from the various biomes and bosses to make the best food, which is your best bet for surviving.

Hello! im having a problem where the crops disappear, at first i thought that maybe some mobs were attacking the crops so i fenced the area and still the same, i also noticed that when i teleported back the crops randomly disappear, as if the portal was doing something to trigger that

Are the crops planted too closely together, or possibly under tree branches? Mobs can be an issue, but if they are not healthy they should look brown-ish when growing and tell you what is wrong when you look at them.

Workebenches have a 20m spawn blocking radius... it almost looks like something could spawn in the middle. Run around that whole field and make sure no matter where you're standing you can build a wall or something.

Valheim is very CPU limited unlike other games, so it often won't be running at super high framerates in general. But my 6600XT sits around 40-60 on pretty decent settings at 75% render scale and 4k overall res, so it sounds like you've got something weird going on. Screen recorders and overlays and such can sometimes cause issues as well.

Most games don't use the CPU and memory bandwidth like Valheim does because of dynamic nature of the game, and as such Valheim is much more sensitive to bottlenecking and contention there. If you have anything running in the background that could be using significant CPU like a virus scan that can cause issues, too. The Gamepass version should be effectively identical to the Steam version, though.

Lately I've had a weird problem. My pc crashes when playing Valheim and browsing Chrome at the same time. Sometimes everything works well for hours, but sometimes I can barely start the game when pc crashes. Also, when this happens I have to unplug my pc from the power source completely and then plug it in - otherwise pc just wont start.
My drivers are updated, I've got 32gb RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue.
Any ideas what could cause this crash?

Have you looked at your PC's temps, CPU usage and GPU usage?

Hrmph. That looks reasonable overall. But if you can't reproduce it specifically, I would suggest making sure the BIOS is updated, reset it, and possibly run a memtest86+ or something to make sure you don't have some failing hardware. Random hard crashes like you're experiencing are unfortunately symptomatic of RAM or GPU failure.

Like I said, look into getting a memtest86+ boot USB drive made and check your memory, or try just removing your oldest sticks of RAM and going down to 16GB instead and see if that helps. It's likely a bad memory location in one stick of RAM with that kind of behavior, but you can't really figure it out without trial and error or a specific memory test.
