Also I discovered that just pushing enemies with my battleaxe makes fighting them charred warriors easy

#

I wonder if I can cheese Reto that way

heady parcel
#

That's the way to go. Naval bombardment, soften them up!

It only effects roughly 2.5m around it, easy enough to put near the smelter anyways

You'd mentioned it having a slow rate, but it doesn't as far as I can see, though it's certainly less passive.

#

Interesting, I've massive walls around my base so I can't relate to that 😛

heady parcel
#

This time I only put my main house behind the moat, secondary buildings are outside but behind walls so monsters don't aggro on them - but the obliterator is still out in the open. Might have to change that...

slate grove
#

One more taming question: does the taming time have to be uninterrupted?

merry pebble
heady parcel
#

Not from what I have seen, but when interrupted it seems to take a good damn while before it starts ticking again.

#

Gods, can we have black metal arrows please - simply equal to needle arrows, just as something to use the metal for...

Awesome thanks guys

But I guess I'll be making some ballistae soon

That crossbow has its uses, and if I get my skill high enough to cut that reload time to 2 seconds or less....

wintry valve
#

Yesterday I wad thonking of armor types that this game could have. A needle armor for plains, made from deathskitos. Its pointy all over, is a light armor, and does some piercing damage around when rolling.

So did black forest and yet here we are.

shy marlin
#

tbf i feel like the bear armors fall more in line with medium armors

tacit crystal
shy marlin
#

yea Ragnar_laugh the line between med and light sets in valheim is pretty blurred

#

My reference frame is Ask set being a medium set, and being pretty comparable to the bear sets

tacit crystal
#

Maybe the "true" medium armor would be Root set, considering how tanky the harnesk itself is.

shy marlin
#

yea i'd agree

tacit crystal
#

Then again there are always some balancing ahead.

shy marlin
#

I for sure thought the root harnesk was gonna get adjusted down to -33% or -25% in the ptb

but idk

Running around with the bear set in my playthru has made me realize even more just how strong that chestpiece is

I admire anyone with the patience/bravery for ask-taming. I feel like their ||eggs|| should be able to made into the highest-tier food, with the amount of work you have to put into it

wintry valve
#

its not exactly hard

#

I make a small crater, and I shove two askvins in there using a harpoon

#

then I shove like 6 purple thing and then I practice sneaking by walking into a wall nearby for half an hour

Then I bring back two eggs that I throw in a big house

new mead idea:
240 proof IPA of clarity,
10% more exp for 5 minutes, you then die afterward

wintry valve
#

for real tho I remember having an idea for a new type of mead, and there would be one per biome
The idea is that you take it after eating. They equalise all food buff duration and add a few minutes based on the quality of the mead. The mead itself has a cooldown of, I dunno, 15 minutes or something.

#

i found this really cool island with a huge lagoon surrounded on each side by 5 biomes (Meadows, BF, Swamp, Mountain, Plains) and Yagluth being in the Plains side of it

gonna make a castle on a small islet facing Yagluth

wintry valve
#

what even is grausten?

fossil delta
#

Looks like concrete to me.

blazing orchid
wintry valve
#

Well cant be that, since you get it from large rock formation

fossil delta
#

Since when is Valheim realistic? Maybe the stone is limestone.

tacit crystal
#

Tried to look up for something, initially I thought graust would have been something in Swedish but that wasn't the case.

wintry valve
fossil delta
#

They have never had us really go into how we process build materials out side of metals. We don't have to make lumber yards, we don't have to make extruders, pipe benders, etc... Most of it is just abstractly representative. Which I am fine with. I don't want exacting detail.

tacit crystal
#

Since some creatures and items names mean something in Swedish, like fuling, asksvin and Klossen.

wintry valve
#

what do... wait... whats a klossen?

#

oh, one of the candied weapon

#

right, I forgot about those

fluid cove
#

I used to be part of an rpg design circle, and one member was obsessed with making a tabletop RPG with realistic fluid mechanics

somehow everything worked using rock paper scissors, though

wintry valve
#

oh I dont think this guy ever completed anything

fossil delta
#

I mean using rock, paper scissors.

wintry valve
#

perhaps

#

anyway, next time I see smiffe, im gon ask what is grausten

fluid cove
#

what if the Deep North requires us to boil water to create steam in order to warm our base much like Ashlands base requiring shield generators

wintry valve
#

You dont need a shield for ashland :V

fluid cove
#

i like that energy of yours

fossil delta
#

We have blast furnaces. Not a stretch.

tacit crystal
wintry valve
#

I mean im in the process of making a giant grausten house

#

its fire proof

tacit crystal
#

Or is it? flameling_fire

wintry valve
#

well the giant lava blob hopping on it sure doesnt set fire to the rock

fluid cove
tacit crystal
wintry valve
tacit crystal
#

Which is AoE.

wintry valve
#

seriously, one of the biggest challenge in the ashlands is trying to explore without your inventory filling with all sorts of stones

#

I also have the psychological need of prioritising harvesting the trees before they burn down

#

because ashwood is limited (even if theres a truckload of it around)

tacit crystal
#

Very good way to get lots of grausten is to lure lava blob to explode inside those ruins around. They have pieces buried very deep underground, so they explode and pop on ground.

#

Now with lava blob vials it's even easier to get them to explode where you want.

fossil delta
#

I get up on those big rocks and have Morgryn tear them apart for me,

tacit crystal
#

Morgen is also one good grausten miner. And Valkyrie.

#

They are less controllable tho.

fossil delta
#

Yeah, I just kill Valkyrie,

#

I usually need their drops more than I need their labor anyways.

#

Usually hundreds of grausten laying around after good fights as well.

wintry valve
#

What if we had the ability to update older armor tiers with newer materials?

tacit crystal
wintry valve
#

Add black metal to your iron armor to make black iron armor or something

#

I say that because some set have interesting properties but their defense scores really do not follow with the rest of the game. I think it could be interesting to have, say, an improved version of the troll armor, boosted with some more advanced material like linen or lox pelts

tacit crystal
#

Certainly would be interesting if some older armor could be used as crafting ingredient to some new armor. Some other games do similar thing. thonking

wintry valve
#

Another reason I say that is because iron armor looks neat.

#

Hella fine, one could say

agile star
# wintry valve Another reason I say that is because iron armor looks *neat*.

The wolf armor looks even better tho. I like your idea and it would be neat to choose 1 armor set you like visually to make it viable. My favorite heavy armor style is the wolf but recently I am only making the light armor sets because I save a lot of resources that way, get other bonuses and less movementspeed penalty or none

heady parcel
# wintry valve I feel like theres something wrong with what you just said but I cannot quite ex...

What I'm trying to say is that for the average player who doesn't read wikis, reddits etc, grinding skills will never be an issue. If you want to raise a skill so much that you grind it on purpose, whatever boredom sets in is mostly on you. That's true in any game where you dedicate to a certain grind, for whatever reason. I did certain dungeons and raids in WoW a stupid amount of times to get certain rare drops. I absolutely HATED a certain boss after that, but I can't blame the game for it...

wintry valve
#

You know why I didnt bother with skills the first time I played? I assumed they did nothing.

# drifting ferry Getting to 100 is the completionist achievement, it should never be the "Softcap...

I can agree with that. I think the issue is how each skill gives you xp. Since all skills level up from the same pattern - a certain amount of xp each level, ever growing - some skills simply don't give as much xp from using them like others, especially if the skill is something you perform a lot less when playing the game normally - such as sneaking for example. It is only natural that the skills you use most are the ones that grow faster, but some skills grow much slower even when you use them a lot, which must be down to how they award xp. Cooking is one such skill - this current character I have gone out of my way to cook absurdly much, way way more than I need to - got chests full of food - in order to lvl cooking a bit more. Still not even 30 on day 700...

When it boils down to it, the skills are a way for the game to let your character get better at what he does a lot, and in that regard they work perfectly fine. Some might need a bit of xp tweaking - imo cooking and sneaking could be two examples - but it is not a major thing.

iron ore 16.66% of the time, quantity 1 or 2

Sounds like you need to find larger schools of them. For some reason the Trolls fish have the most numerous large schools, with puffer being close.

uncut bough
#

and they aren't interested in biting unless i keep the boat moving which risks beaching it on the swamp

#

them leeches keep circling my boat

fossil delta

Best place I ever caught them was from a Leviathon that spawned close enough to swamp I swam to it. Caught a wide variety of fish from it. Often without a pole thanks to storms washing them up on the lev.

For instance can I find the bog witch closer to the center of of the map or farther?

mint yoke
#

Bog which usually spawns about the half way point for me I've found her frequently just a little further out than where hildir spawns for me

orchid locust
#

each trader has several (I believe, ten?) possible locations where they can spawn, and once you find their first spawn location they settle for good and all the other locations are thrown away. Since they all have specific areas in which they can spawn, the "closer to center" is generally relative, since they'll always be a minimum distance away from the center.
If you check any seed on the Valheim world generator site you can see how each trader can potentially spawn very far away from the center, but that's very unlikely, since you're almost certain to find one of the other, closer locations before reaching the farthest one.

If you check the wiki you'll see Haldor won't spawn closer than 1500 meters from the center, and the Bog Witch and Hildir won't spawn closer than 3000 meters from center.

Mistlands/Ashlands the feast is "great" only if you're a mage. Otherwise it is "decent, but not better."

I am finally getting back into the game after a few months, with a world that I am setting stricter rules on. (I still use portal all as I don't have the time to boat all of my ores).

How much space do you feel is "just right" for a bronze age base? I've had cramped ones and I've had ones so big they felt empty before, curious if someone has some rules of thumb they follow

I build my base to hold everything up through Ashlands, so its definitely not small.

I get that feeling, I see so many places I'd want to build, but hauling ores across half the map is not something I'm gonna do

#

Guess that's where portal all comes in handy, but I'm waiting till I unlock that in ashlands

neon magnet
#

I tend to just move instead of hauling stuff. Get all I want from an area, then just bring the basics to set up crafting stations etc somewhere else (where the next biome is more plentiful) and start building there

fossil delta

Yeah, there are a lot of places I'd like to build, which is the benefit of playing solo. I have the time to do so, if I really want to.

I feel absolutely no need to mod Valheim, but if and when it gets official mod support (i.e. a Steam Workshop) I'll look into increasing render and object draw distance a bit unless they tweak that in vanilla.

Hey everyone!

Looking for regular, reliable players to join me in my world.

I’d love for the group to meet up roughly once a week for a few hours at a scheduled time that works for everyone. It’s not mandatory, but the idea is to form a small, active community that plays and progresses together.

I’m mainly looking for active, cooperative players who want to be part of something long-term. Whether you’re a builder, explorer, or just like hanging out and helping the group thrive, you’re welcome here.

Currently we are as far as the swamps and mountains (but have not defeated either boss), so we have iron and stone and will likely be staying here for a while to prioritize main base building, resource gathering, and exploring. I have weeks in this server, and probably 150 hours. I have included some photos of our base so far.

Looking forward to adventuring together 🛶🔥

I have built two boar farms on earlier worlds, each time I have pretty much abandoned the poor buggers after completing it. So, if you @weak swift don't think it is fun to tame them just for the sake of doing it, and having some swine around that you can cuddle now and then, I'd say you don't need to spend time on it.

keen trench
#

i dont' do auto afk farms or stuff, so my typical "harvest" consists of 12 boars per generation... on 1x i find it overall useless with boars less than 1 star and prefer hunting in that case. If boars are 1 star or more, 12 per gen is ok and even comfy, but only early in the game, if i don't find / take time to tame starred boars before swamps i'd just skip it probably

I started a hardcore no map no portal game and man the whole way you play the game is so different

#

the immersion factor makes you do things you wouldn't ever think about like building roads and signs to navigate

#

also you deforest according to the path you're making

analog grotto
ember egret
#

but playing this way sort of shifts your thinking to changing the world to suit yourself around you and you happen to progress

#

progression is slower but the experience is vastly different

heady parcel
# analog grotto no portal sounds like a total slog, is it really fun to play like that?

I am absolutely loving it, but if you feel you have to progress constantly in a game you'd probably hate it, since it does slow the process down a whole lot. But for me it immensely increases the immersion, since I need to plan ahead and be smart about where I place my outposts. Also building roads to make carting less rage-inducing, which has the side effect of "taming" the landscape. I'm planning to build a paved and wisp-lit damn road through mistlands just for the hell of it!

#

But, once I get to Ashlands I will allow myself to build stone portals (head canon - stone portals are the ONLY portals...) because no way in heck I am subjecting myself to travelling that hellscape without portals.

#

Either that or filling the entire bloody biome with fireplaces to push spawns away from where I move.

To me this game is simply a next step in the evolution of Survival Sandbox games.
I started with LiF:YO, went to Wurm Online (the only game besides Valheim with a "Free Build" system), did Medieval Dynasty, then Valheim. Tried Enshrouded and the last version of Runescape, but those don't have the right feeling for me.

Valheim offers a liberty I've only found in Wurm Online so far; with a tad or RPG added to it and without the monthly subscription. 😄

heady parcel
#

I love how Valheim won't punish you overly much for not optimising everything or making progression your main priority. If I want to spend months loitering in Meadows building a cosy little base, I can do that without the game trying to rush me ahead to beat the next boss or whatever. If I want to push on constantly and get to bosses asap, the game allows for that too - and everything in between, including excessive building, obsessive resource farming etc etc. I love this about Valheim. Then on top of all that they added the world modifiers so long-timers can shake things up - or if you're a newbie and struggling so much that you're not having fun, you can tweak the game to be more forgiving to match your own approach. All in all a game nearly as perfect as is even possible - and it's not even fully done yet!
