For those using bows, Ashlands may be somewhat harder as most of the monsters have a high pierce resistance. But then, a high (cross)bow skill may negate that.

For those going melee; blocking or good AoE may be more important, but overall I say combining those two weapon styles will still make it possible.

Personally I found the most important lesson I learned in Ashlands, is - once again - not to rush things.
The spawn location number is higher, so you will encounter a lot more monsters as in the previous biomes.

My first landing (early PTB) ended up in a disaster and getting my stuff back ended up in a couple more disasters.

Once I had that, I actually had to spend some time in Plains to level up some of my lost skills before I even dared to give it a new try.

The second attempt I didn't land at a spot that looked empty, but choose a former building instead as it had a roof over it. Turned out to be a Dverger outpost and it made a good outpost for me to venture forth.

After that it was just a matter of starting to spawn proof the area by placing campfires all around, using the Dverger as cannon fodder and eventually using campfires to "craft" a "spawn free" path towards a fortress.
Once I got there things got easier, but I never continued with that character. So I have no idea how things are now.

Another important lesson I learned:

The Drakar is as slow as a cripple turttle.

I found it much easier to sail as far South as possible using the Longboat filled with black marble and equipment for a stone cutter and a portal. Once I reached the border, I turned and found myself a small Mistland Island, set up a base there, smashed the Longboat, teleported to my main base, teleported back with the mats for the Drakar and assembled it there.

I think that saved me about 60-75% of the time it would've taken me when sailing that entire journey with the Drakar.

Can't mine out tunnels in most of the biomes. Only in the Mistlands.

You can however raise terrain (up to 8 meters, I think) and dig down to a depth of 8 meters below the surface. Which, since most of the areas aren't flat, might cause some problems to get a nice area.

There's pickaxes to mine out areas and hoes to raise / flatten areas.

You can also mine out copper and silver veins from their surroundings.

Well, so far the only two games I found you can really go underground are two MMO's and their standalone version.

However, one MMO and its standalone version has preset buildings, meaning you won't be able to build walls and stuff in there, only the furniture. The other MMO and its standalone version does have the option to build walls and roofs and stuff, but lack something like doing quests and having bosses for progression.

So I'm afraid a "best of both worlds" isn't really there atm.

You can do most of it, but not the water slide.

As I said, you can dig down in the terrain up to 8 meters below the surface.
That'll be enough to get yourself a cellar or basement under a building.

First try zero deaths although I did have to leave to recuperate a few times. My notes for next time are dont bother bringing fire resistant potions and bring more lingering stamina potions

Plan of staying at the top did not work out, after the first 1/3 of her health I realised she kept going to the bottom and that was wasted time for dps and allowed her to heal while my potion and rested timers drained for no reason

frostner heavy attack was easily my most used attack against her, this beast of a hammer was dealing around 200 a swing

beat her with my friends a few days ago before moving on to ashlands and she was more fun than I remember her being on another playthrough but

I can't imagine doing well against her solo

I think the biggest problem with the fight is stamina management, I’d get overwhelmed and start taking a lot of damage and not have enough stamina to roll or dodge

It’s definitely doable without leaving the citadel at all but probably takes some practise, you can’t really stay near her the entire fight because she attacks faster than you can reliably regen stamina and parry/dodge and fit attacks in

It depends if you want to cheese that fight or not.

Some things you can do to shorten it, is to make sure you got weapons doing blunt and that the area around the altar is made of "dry" land - so no pools and puddles - and that it's clear of as many spawn points for Draugrs and Skellies as possible.

The cheesy part would be to create a platform on top of Bonemass' altar or a nearby fallen "ancient tree" and use that to attack him from.

Other than that, having the poison resist, healing and stamina meads, as well as maximum tier armor and weapons for the Swamp are important.

So advising something that would lower their health regen for a FIRST fight is not something I would advise.

They are useful, they create temporal platforms you can jump on to the Flametal spires.
Another way is trying to find those spires that are near walkable land.
Also sometimes Flametal ore can be found in Fortresses.

Got some ivy planted at the wall of my house in the "normal diff" game and it gives a nice touch to it. Although it was just a 2 stone high wall.
Tried to plant it next to a wall with the overhanging roof and that didn't work. So perhaps I should remove the roof piece over there for a bit and wait for the vine to grow before putting it back.
That tower is 8m high, so the vine would certainly look good on that one.

Yeah, that could work. And also as they take very little time you could also see the difference when the plant is about to start to grow on wall if you, it starts off normal and then looks smaller when it's almost starting to grow.

Do you have a portal nearby?

If so, head back your main base, disassemble the longboat, set up a new portal, bring more portal mats with you to start a mini base at an island close enough to Ashland to get there by boat, but not being burned and set up the portal there. You can leave the Drakar over there, while using the Longboat to sail back with any loot you got.

It's a lot faster as sailing from the deep South to the (approxomately) center of the map.

It may take some time to get it started, but once you got a nice number, you can kill off half of them, drop food and wait for the piglets to pop up. Once you don't get more piglets, butcher the adult part and wait for the piglets being grown up and starting to breed again.

Of course, when having starred boars the netto gain is better in the long run, but even with non-starred boars it's possible.

Personally I cut tree because I find the spawner farms to be not in the spirit of the game.
But if you are fine with spawner farms, Swamp biome and dig out under a Surtling spawner.

For bulk coal just buy Fishing Bait and throw it in the Obliterator.

Once you hit Mistlands, you can burn Seeker Meat as you'll be getting copious amounts of that.

There's also the method with the Fire Hazards modifier. Which requires a stack of wood, then drop a fireball on it. It will burn the stack down to coal.

Personally I'm with Sevrahn here. Cutting trees and using the kiln works best for me. Drop one stack of wood in a kiln in the morning, do other stuff, pick all up and drop another 25 wood in the kiln for the night works quite well for me.

wellll, stagger scales with physical (and lightning) damage, so if a weapon's attack has x3 damage, it'll also do x3 stagger.
the thing about the atgeir secondary attack is that it only has a x1 damage multiplier, so it needs that high of a stagger multiplier to still stagger well.
x6 stagger is very good though, i just wouldn't say it's 6 times stronger than other weapons 😅

There are rooms under the first staircase leading to the main door.
When you get there, look for a wooden wall, smash that and enter.
It got enough space for a portal, workbench, stonecutter to remove some walls and a bed. Perhaps a bit more if you are able to remove a lot of the inner walls without having the floor above colapsing.

hey guys what's the best way to mine flametal pillars? My main concern is being interrupted / attacked by all the creatures who are attracted to the noise of my mining. Is there anything I can do about it? Even in the middle of a large lava pool they seem to come up to me.

Fallen Valkyrie is the real threat when mining on top of the spire IMO. Others that can't reach you, not so much. But if they irritate you can shoot them from top.
Clear the area before mining. Ideally try mine those Flametal spires close to ground. Starting mining from top to bottom is safer, but if you go from bottom to top, Feather cape helps for safe landing.
Mine as much as you can, get to land, drop ores, repeat. If you hear big noise (implying it will soon start sinking), you have 20s before it will sink slowly.

You can use the spire for jumping up too. But you could leave some nodes for going up then mine them last.

Okay I’m glad I experienced Ashland’s for the first time after all the balancing because it feels pretty good

I’ve died twice so far but I’ve just cleared my first fortress, the morgens are big damage sponges and the valkyries I was expecting to be a lot more difficult

You can take the mats for Stone portal in your base, build it there to take 1 iron with you, then dismantle it and take the mats back to Ashlands.

You mean mineable Flametal spires? They have 1% chance to start sinking per hit. It will warn with a loud sound if it happens and after 20 seconds it will then start to sink.

Jotun Bane has a bit better axe power than BM axe but it's not that useful for combat IMO (and in most peoples opinion too).

Just because you can't increase poison damage with multiple hits, only by hitting a stuggered target. I'm sure it would be a greater axe than the black metal one or even better than other weapons

Yeah, poison damage is inferior to fire and spirit in that regard because poison doesn't stack but fire and spirit do.
If poison did stack then it would be much different, better even.

Although Seekers don't resist poison.

should have the secondary for jotun bane throw it and have it clip through enemies, treat it like a standard attack on anything the hitbox collides with, that way you could get multihit with poison DoT lined up, and axe throwing seems very "vikingey"

i bet that alone would take it from very unpopular to at least moderately popular lol

with the diversity in kinds of axes the skill buffs it's overall in a pretty decent state as a weapon class IMO, but the poison damage compared to other options with its non-stacking (and a good cluster of things just immune too) and nothing else enough to make up for it is specifically what I think causes a lot of people to pass on the jotun bane
