You can also put other things like coins and candles on top of barrels using some building techniques. I just place a 1x1 wooden floor on top of the barrel to the point where it starts to clip into the barrel, place my objects on that floor piece (can be a barrel as well, for stacking) then remove the floor piece.

iirc the average amount of yag vegvisirs per world is something around 10, but it probably varies heavily since they're an optional part of a structure and thus don't have a forced amount themselves.
you're pretty likely to find the altar itself before your first vegvisir, since that structure is much more visible from afar than the stonehenges.

Day 1 of my Ashlands adventure, my Drakkar was destroyed by a Bonemaw and vicious waves. Stranded on a pillar, surrounded by strange new enemies with no land in sight, I had very little hope. I have all I need for a portal, but the wood for my workbench was stored in my Drakkar and is being circled by the Bonemaw. Now having no way to return home, I begin leaping pillar to pillar, with the Bonemaw following closely and inspecting each splash I make in the water. A Vulture dives at me, but luckily it was already very weak, weak enough for my trusty Finewood bow to take it down. In the distance behind the Vulture I spot a tree branch, this isn't just another branch of Yggdrasil, this looks different. I begin to sweat as each jump could be my last as the Bonemaw is now following me even closer now, and sees through my sneaky troll gear. I make one more leap and it becomes clear, this is land, and I have hope once more. The Bonemaw at this point has turned back, and leaves me to my fate with the sundered beaches in my horizon. With one more leap, I will begin my quest to find wood and hopefully find a shelter to place my portal. I am writing this before my final jump, am I delaying? Scared? Worried all this work will be for nothing? Perhaps... but hope can eclipse all of these feelings, and the dream of returning to my lush home in the meadows cannot be snuffed out so easily.

I don’t know whether to be impressed that you got your drakkar killed by a bonemaw or to facepalm that you went to the Ashland’s armed with only a fine wood bow and clothed in troll hide 🙈

I was sailing for about 30 minutes, and ran my boat's damage down a bit too much without encountering a single Bonemaw. I didn't even know there were threats in the water! An update to the story, I jumped ashore and hit a tree a single time and was swarmed by 6 Vultures, and 5 Charred Warriors. If not for the potions I brought, and the bonemass buff, I surely would've died. I ran around in a panic, still unsure if I could even find regular wood. I was very shaken and was only continuing to find more enemies to chase me, until I saw a very familiar looking structure! As I ran towards it, several Dvergr surfaced from the building and ran by me as if they knew I was in trouble. I watched as they engaged in a long battle against over 12 enemies and just as they prevailed, a Lava Blob landed next to the 3 survivors... it was over in a fiery flash. No enemies or remaining Dvergr friends in sight, I hacked down some trees and solemnly constructed my portal back to my home. I plan on constructing 5 gravestones at their outpost to honor them. As for why I traveled with such light and weak gear, I don't like to risk my best gear on adventures that lead to places that are new and unknown. Though I managed to survive, I contemplate if my choice to travel so light was what ultimately what cost my new friends their lives. I just hope they're laughing and dining in the halls of Valhalla.

i don't know what causes them but they aren't usually present on those trees.
the only times i've ever seen them was when i was generating the world at unusual speeds by flying around.
something tells me they were intended to show up on all guck trees but something breaks that so it only happens under specific circumstances.

i really wish i could look into (and understand) the code to see what's causing them to only show up if you do that

my only theory is that it might be a check that happens on the tree upon generation, if there are guck boils on the tree, give it that overlay. but if you're moving at normal speeds, maybe the tree generates way before the guck so the check doesn't recognize them, and if you're moving super fast, the tree and guck might generate at the same time, no clue.
