Root Harnesk is nice against deathsquitos and spear fulings, but it makes you weak against fire so shamans and torch fulings are more dangerous to your then.

Curious about why I like them? Fair question, they look like a meme item

They are nice utility for doing short-medium swims between islands (combined with eikthyr you even have zero stamina drain while swimming). Faster and less clunky than going home, grabbing a boat, building the boat, and having to break the boat back down. Also builds your swim skill.

Though my main use of it is to escape bad situations. You can outswim most enemies with the fins (in swamp you can outswim everything but wraiths, I think), so if you get in a bad situation and get surrounded, just hop in the ocean and swim away. Thats an especially good tactic in swamp and mistlands

I play a lot of hard + permadeath + other challenges so having an easy out which only requires 10 adrenaline to trigger is pretty nice

No one remembers Valheim because it was never meant to be remembered. Odin tore it from the World Tree like a scab from old flesh and hid it among the roots, a dumping ground for threats too stubborn to die and too dangerous to keep. The Valkyries were sworn to carry only the fallen of Midgard, but even gods grow careless when eternity dulls the edge. On a night when the skies screamed wrong, they reached too far—past the familiar branches of Yggdrasil—and their talons closed around souls that did not belong to this world at all.
One of those souls was King Almar. In his own realm—another world clinging to the great tree—Almar had ruled for three centuries, sustained by magic, war, and the quiet rot that comes with long power. His magic was not clean or holy; it was the kind that hummed, burned, and sometimes bit the hand that wielded it. When the Valkyries dragged him screaming from his throne, they stripped away his years like dead skin. He fell into Valheim young again, breathing hard, heart pounding, with only echoes of his old strength—now bound to runes, staves, wisps, and the strange, half-forgotten magic Odin allowed to exist in this cursed place.

The Dvergr were the first to find him. They watched from behind glowing lenses and humming machines, whispering as Almar bent magic to his will in ways that felt wrong for a mortal. To them, he wasn’t lost—he was misplaced divinity. Gods had abandoned Valheim long ago, leaving monsters and memories behind, so the Dvergr did what clever survivors do: they knelt just enough. They helped Almar raise walls, forges, wards, and roads. They crowned him king. And when they tried to honor the legends of the old world, they got the name wrong. Not Midgard, but Midgar—a broken echo, like everything else in Valheim.
Under King Almar, Midgar grew teeth. The Dvergr swore protection to all Vikings who did not raise steel against them, and word spread fast among the lost dead. More warriors arrived—some from Midgard, others from worlds that never knew Odin’s name. They came confused, angry, hopeful, or laughing like fools who didn’t yet understand where they were. Almar ruled them all, building order from fear, humor from despair, and law from necessity. He learned quickly that monsters were easier to manage than people—but people were far more dangerous when bored.

Now Midgar stands as a mistake that refuses to die, just like its king. Almar remembers being three hundred years old, and sometimes the weight of it leaks into his smile. He knows Valheim is a prison. He knows Odin is watching—or pretending not to. And he knows the Valkyries may come again, to correct their error. Until then, the fires burn, the roads stretch, and the kingdom grows. Because if Valheim is the place forgotten gods throw their problems… then King Almar intends to become one they can never forget.

another solution is getting them before they get you. when they are flying towards the player, if your melee weapon is not super short, it is possible to hit them mid flight just before they hit us. But you have to time their flight/distance and the speed of your weapon.

I do that a lot with frostener. Since it's a slower weapon, i start the attack animation basically when they start their straight line flight towards me.

Sometimes I miss the exact timing so they hit me as I hit them. We both take damage. But they die and I don't 😎

U can't block them with a shield less than the black metal one that's one solution

Another solution is to dodge but that will come with practice, I just go towards them when they r coming to me so that I make sure I don't dodge early then I dodge towards them that way it's a perfect dodge

A whole different solution is to use the abyssal razor or silver knife or above in level to kill them when they r heading to u but u have to perfectly time it, I prefer knifes cuz they r pretty fast when it comes to Dethquitoes

Make sure not to dodge away cuz it could be an early dodge so that they will hit u right after it and if u did dodge away by mistake just spam dodging until u make sure ur safe

Have you ever tried serpent-shield?

Serpent shield has pierce-resist. Theres NO problem blocking deathsquitoes. Add up with Root armor and you can sleep under open sky in Plains all night.

Easiest way to deal with them imo, unless you take them out with bow; knife just before it reach you.

And its not always about the shield itself but more how you use it.

For 'squitos, my go-to is an atgier. The reach gives you a wide margin of safe timing for the attack.

People should get better at recognizing the value of Root Armor. It gives you a solid level of comfort in the Plains and more room to experiment with different weapons if you haven’t quite found your style yet. Root Armor also performs really well in the Mistlands against Seekers, since they deal pierce damage, just swap it out if you’re going up against a Gjall or you will buuurn

The same goes for the Serpent Scale Shield, it’s seriously underrated. It also has pierce resistance.

Oh and the Ticks, thats also pierce damage.

I just got 2 iron from frost caves, tried how I would fare there with early axes. With help of bronze buckler to parry cultists and quickly switching to axes they melt fast after that.
Also just Eikthyr dead.

Man. the dual axes alt attack really does not play well with hills. It's not such an issue in ashlands but using the new Early Axes in black forests is a great way to yeet yourself off a hill.

My own skill issue really, Ashlands was a lot, though I rarely died, it was mostly due to the fact that if I did, I might quit, it was often so hard to get it back lol. never ending enemies. Either way, I really can't wait to torture myself in TDN, it's fine haha
