Well that isn't the discourse of open air discussion on the internet. People talk about tons of things all the time. I think it does have to do with peoples impulse to speak about Diablo 4. It was a massive disappointment and really annoyed the entire ARPG world. It took a few years but I promise it will fade into obscurity and you won't hear it be discussed similarly to Diablo 3 EVEN THOUGH D3 isn't bad now, it simply won't be discussed. Diablo 4 is truly a abomination. Almost feels AI generated beyond its really good art.

I agree that for "modern audiences" especially younger gamers Diablo 2 probably feels very dated. But it has its place as a ARPG legend for a reason. The beauty behind its itemization is unmatched if you dig into the kinds of math that goes into it. It's really something to be appreciated in that regard.

Charms are a bit of a murky issue. For minmaxers theyre definitely a headache but I never had an issue with them in casual play. I think they have some issues but theyre in an acceptable spot.

Stamina is a byproduct of Diablo's origins as a CRPG, I would argue it ends up being a non-issue by the time youre midway through normal

Sure, if D2 came out now it would probably not be regarded well, but we should put games in their historical and cultural context.

or heck even completing a good set in SSF was insanely satisfying (and also frustrating) since usually more often than not people find stuff they'd kill for in online while playing offline 😂

I'd still say it's a good game purely from a game design perspective. Would I reccomend new players buy D2R? Yes. It definitely smooths out some rough edges modern gamers aren't used to.

I don't really do the whole "grind for big items and become rich" anymore in ARPGs in general. Used to do that in D2, used to do it in PoE. Now I just play SSF. Each season in PoE my goal is usually to just complete the atlas, most challenges, play some fun builds and kill all the non-uber bosses

I also played a lot of classic roguelikes like Adom, Angband, ToME back in the day. Even today I play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup which is like a modern classic roguelike

1.0 is releasing with a thing called "cycles" its LE's term for what a D4 season or POE league is. So if you had a character prior to 1.0 release he won't be able to be part of the cycle. you have to make a new char. but your character will still be there in the non-cycle game

Oh man, I totally forgot about IVAN. Very briefly tried it back in the day when I was on rougelike spree, and I do remember it being wacky. Catalsym: Dark Days Ahead is still probably my favorite rougelike. Fallout + Mad Max + Stalker is a pretty awesome combo. I also wanna get back into Caves of Cud. Probably one of the other most interesting and unique roguelikes I've dabbled in.

I left that game after 700h when I finally realised it just became a chore to have to do the grouped instances every single week to progress. And god forbid if you had a bad group.

A bit of a shame though, the combat and classes are fantastic and some of the boss fights are incredible.

I've come back to ARPG from MMORPG because of the greater freedom in playing schedule... although GW2 and FFXIV have been very good on that point if not trying to beat the new raid the first week.

The thing about D4 is that they could have really really went amazing with it and so much passion went to this development who worked non stop to make this game playable but with so much greed it's just super sad to see.

part of the reason I dare to quit is because I think I already got more than the value of $70 invested (quite unlike many people above)
my expectation is lower than most, I never have this weird expectation of "if a game is an arpg, and worth this much, it has to be played for hundreds if not thousands of hours to justify the price"

But people tend to prioritize refresh rate than resolution. remember, some GPU still struggle even on 1080p on Refresh rate alone. my perspective is that if it's a problem that every game has, then it's probably not an easily solvable issue. if there was an easy solution to this, it wouldn't keep consistently happening to online games. and there may be technical or financial reasons why simply scaling up using cloud servers isn't feasible. I don't think it's fair to judge a development team or a game because the problem exists, because we don't know how hard they tried to fix it and how much worse it would be if they didn't. We also don't know what it would take to have a truly smooth launch- there's always surprises and issues that can't reasonably be anticipated, even with a game like this. If you expect your max player amount to be 100,000 people, and 500,000 people queue up (for example, idk the real numbers) then there's not really a lot you can do to rapidly 5x your server capacity. I think that's why a lot of launches go badly- it's not easy to anticipate how many people are actually going to buy the game and log in when it drops.

If you took the time to actually read up what many players who work in the field of networking and deployment have been posting, you'd get a greater understanding of the complexities. This wasn't an issue of them not planning sufficient server space.
