@hallow frigate Typically it boils down to not properly load testing your entire system.

Perhaps you test the auth servers in isolation, or the game servers, but forget to test the matchmaking servers etc..

Also servers act a lot different under a consistent load spread across time equally compared to 150K people pressing "Enter Game" at once at firing 150K request in the span of a second.

Databases are generally a hard bottleneck to fix, as scaling them can be really difficult and typically reach a cap when vertically scaling. You can horizontally scale DB's but this require proper preplanning and sharding of your data, which is again hard... (This is a reason a lot of HUGE games separate US/EU servers, think league of legends, wow etc...)

Realistically there are tons of way to fall flat when load testing your system, its hard and theres a reason software engineers get paid 100's of thousands a year.

We’ve scale tested for months with third parties, consultants, the help of infra providers, and our own backend team. We have the ability to scale servers quickly, have reserved a large amount of bare metal machines, and do not have a maximum spend for cloud overflow- it’s all elastic.
