I have read a TON on this and am still a little fuzzy, would appreciate any feedback.

I have the older Aeotec S2 USB stick (Not the Gen 5, super old, its not actually S2 compliant, S2 just means version 2 of their original stick) that I have been using in HA on the old Zwave integration for years. Never had a single problem to be honest. I have about 40 devices setup. I recently upgraded HA and realized the integration was deprecated. Since I run in a docker container, I setup Zwave2mqtt in a container and got just about everything moved over. Its working well, but I’m looking at upgrading my S2 stick to a newer 700 series stick. I understand the issues with the 7 series sticks, but if I'm going to move I might as well get the latest.

Its my understanding that I cannot just port the config from the old stick to the new, so it sounds like I would need to completely rebuild my network. It looks like the new 700 stick from Aeotec doesn’t have the push button on it, so I can’t walk around my house and include all the wall switches, etc. I have.

Any thoughts on the best path forward? I would REALLY love to not have to rebuild my entire network, but I don’t think thats possible. Is there any reason to look at the Zooz variant, or any others over the Aeotec? Appreciate your feedback.

@keen basalt , you are prob better off asking in #zwave-archived , ever since I have been doing z-wave, it was strongly discouraged against adding with the button. You want to add with your stick and device in its actual location.

What bluetooth version do you actually need for a thing to be able to receive LE broadcasts?
I tried a Bluetooth 5.1 dongle from Amazon, but apparently it's so new, support from it hasn't even been committed in the kernel, so it can't see any devices, and nothing can see it, either.

winged knoll
#

Are you using Home Assistant OS?

faint raven
#

Yeah. It was failing on an aarch64 VM running in KVM on a Pi 4, with the USB dongle forwarded to it.

#

But then I tried the same dongle on a non-pi machine with a recent kernel, and the same silent failure applied. It's like it doesn't even try loading the firmware for the dongle.

#

I only got Bluetooth LE to work when I backed up the config and applied it to a Pi 3 Home Assistant OS image, but the Pi 3 seems to go unreliable quite a lot (corrupted homeassistant database).

#

So either I need to get a Bluetooth adapter that actually works, or I need to put an esp32 somewhere just to act as a bluetooth receiver.

#

It would be nice to have an actual long-range Bluetooth adapter directly on the Home Assistant OS.

For the Aqara sensors, on the Zigbee network if I need to "extend" the network to get a device to reach further away I can just use like an Aqara plug in outlet in the middle of the sensor and Conbee II USB? Will it also work for other non Aqara devices?

I have several remote-controlled fan/light combos, each wired to a single paddle switch that controls power to the entire unit. Ideally I'd like to replace each dumb switch with one that can be "programmed" to control light on/off and fan on/off/speed. It also needs to provide constant power so that light and fan can still be controlled from the remote or HA. Hi everyone. I want a suggestion of the way for controlling lights in a house where neutral is missing in most switch holes. I want to be able to control the lights from different switches/panels, not only the ones which wires go through the switch.
I imagine this is a task for home assistant to act as a central hub for communication. And a switch has to act both - independently and as input and output for the HA.

It all depends on your use case. The load that is going to be put on the relay (shelly), the actual switch configuration etc. You’ll find he Shelly catalogue on their website. They have wiring diagrams and important differences between all of the relays (switches) in there. At the end of the day, if you don’t mind the look of some smart switches, and you have a neutral wire in your wall switch sockets, then get a smart switch. Shelly is a game changer if you don’t have a neutral. Also, I don’t think that wiring a shelly is much harder than wiring a conventional smart switch. I’m no professional. Others in this Discord will have way more knowledge than me.

Hoooh. Without theory: wall switches with neutral vs no neutral.
By today i thought its matter of how old is your house, but now i begin to think its difference between markets. So which one do i need for EU? (without any additional transistors and wirings) I believe no neutral as they are more expensive, make sense for Europe 🤣

jovial pulsar
#

The switch needs a loop to work. I.e. somewhere the current comes from, and somewhere it goes. If you have neutral that's not problem. In via live, out via neutral.
If you don't have neutral the current needs to find some other way, and that other way is through the bulb. Usually that's a very very small current which won't make the bulb glow, but it may still be enough for some low energy bulbs to flicker or smart bulbs to take damage. That's why smart switches without neutral are only compatible with dimmable bulbs.

weak basalt
#

Make sense, can understand that. We need to power switch itself. Its a new built house, i checked wires and everywhere its 3 of them. So that should be Neutral one of them? I will not ask any further, will do that tommorow with electrician responsible 🙂

I need to add some switches into my home to be integrated into HA, most have neutrals. I have a nice little zigbee network with the conbee stick, works great. I also have localtuya running, but have lost a couple of switches that I can't get added back into the tuya app.

I have lost the thread of tuya/tuyaconvert/ota conversions, etc. Is this still a thing? Are there still switches that can be converted?? Every zigbee switch I see is approx 45$ which seems excessive. So, I'm looking for a few single pole switches and a few dimmers that I can integrate without cloud into HA. What are the options at this point? Should I just buy Tuya switches, add them to the app, then add them to tuyalocal?? I'm not really 100% clear if the tuya app/devices still dials home once they have been moved to local, but that's a separate question I guess 😄

I am really worried.that anything beyond a raspi will drain a bunch of power

quaint jay
#

Rpi4 uses about 3.8 to 4w while idle. NUCs vary. From what I have seen online some are on the order of 5.x W while others use up to 10 W. Even at 10Ws idle, that would be a cost less than 3 EUR. I guess the real question is how much more than idle would your home assistant instance draw.

It will vary heavily on what all you are running on it. A fairly basic setup that does not involve fancy camera person detection or anything is likely to not be much above idle.

Of course even totally maxing out the pi’s cpu would leave you using only 6W.

An alternative is the odroid n2+. It has lower power consumption when idle than the pi4! But it has a faster processor, and has a max power draw of under 10W fully loaded.

dusk mirage
#

An idle power consumption seems fine to me, I worry the power consumption on load

#

What are things that will raise the consumption above idle for a longer period

@quaint jay

winged knoll
#

Anything that's CPU intensive really. Mostly that's going to be things outside of HA

kindred pivot
#

Can anyone recommend a CO2 meter, so I know when to open a window?

dusk mirage
#

@winged knoll well I currently planning to use the server just for ha.

quaint jay
# dusk mirage What are things that will raise the consumption above idle for a longer period ...

Yeah, if running home assistant os, the main things that would likely cause meaningful cpu usage are anything that needs to decode or re-encode video, or run machine learning models. An excellent example would be the fargate add-on, which decodes video and runs a machine learning model on the results.

The other common cause of heavy cpu usage is if you have a bunch of devices that are very talkative, pushing multiple updates per second. This is not especially common, but a few people do have setups like that.

Lastly if you connect any non-solid state drives, or high power usage usb devices, they will increase the power demand of the device. The more common usb devices for home assistant, like zigbee or zwave sticks are not really a concern. USB powered heaters, things with motors, AI acellerator modules, or the like would be a concern.

Hope this helps

#

But even normal cameras used with home assistant may end up decoding video if configured to use ffmpeg rather that the stream component (used when setting the picture cards to “live”).

teal wolf
dusk mirage
# quaint jay Yeah, if running home assistant os, the main things that would likely cause mean...

This helps a lot. In the end I would never even consider running heaters motors or AI by home assistant. At least, than Ian totally aware that this will burn power. The server will sit in the basement.

My current plan would be to use relonik camera, stream them to cloud FTP 24/7 (+ script to purge old files.

AND being noticed on my phone by their person detection

AND watch the stream on a Google nest or phone or so when ever I want "to check things"

#

As far as I know detection, alarm and live on phone is build into the reolink cameras

quaint jay
#

As long as you are using the camera's on-device person detection, then yeah, load on home assistant should be pretty low.

dusk mirage
#

what hardware might suite my case : old desktop stuff I have around
raspi4 8gb (+SSD)

quaint jay
#

I personally run on the pi4 + ssd, and it works quite well for me. And we already established its power range, which is reasonable. Using old desktop components though it is really hard to be sure what power usage they have. Things can be all over the place. Some older CPUs are really bad power hogs, for example, while others are pretty good.

So if keeping power utilization reasonable is one of your goals, I'd err on the side of a packaged system like the pi or odroid, (or at the very least use a smart plug to monitor consumption for a while, and be prepared to switch if the consumption is too high.)

But I think we concluded even a NUC is probably fine, albeit also probably overkill, and some models do have higher idle power consumption.

dusk mirage
#

Thanks. Well isnt a nuc about 3 times the price of an Raspi + some.have an higher idle? What's the benefits of the nuc

quaint jay
#

Not much benefit unless you need its beefier capabilities, and few people do, unless they are running other services on the box at the same time.

#

The only downside of the pi4 is that recently it has often been hard to find places that have it in stock. You know that global chip shortage thing.

dusk mirage
#

Jeah noticed the shortage but currently could get one raspi for a reasonable price (I was on a "preorder" list)

quaint jay
#

sure, then might as well do that.

dusk mirage
#

I like to know are their things ppl like to run on their ha server I might not be aware of?

quaint jay
#

a fair number of people like to use it to run any other server software they might want. Especially if they don't have any other servers around on which to run things. This can vary from things like a plex media server, to running some databases, or hosting their minecraft servers, or whatever.

If there was ever server software you might have wanted to run, but did not want to run on your main pc, there is probably somebody who runs it alongside home-assistant.

The most common things though are things that complement the home assistant, like an mqtt server, the service portion of the Z-wave integration, local camera NVR software or similar.

#

the most common stuff has add-ons to run inside home-assistant os.

dusk mirage
#

Oh well, I want to run ZigBee2mqtt maybe as well..I though Matt server might be low power.

quaint jay
#

yeah, ZigBee2mqtt and the mqtt server are not likely to be much of a concern in terms of power draw, and have easy to install addons to use them

dusk mirage
#

Thanks
Not sure about NVR though. What's the benefit compared.to just use the oncamera and bump the streams to FTP. I will only need them if ever something will happen like a theft

quaint jay
#

If people don't have an FTP sever available to use, or whatever. local nvrs do have the downside of possibly getting stolen in a theft, which does defeat the point.

dusk mirage
#

Yes that would be my same considering

#

Therefore FTP on the cloud

quaint jay
#

off site is best for cameras, but a lot of people don't want to pay for cloud hosting, and not every manufacturer offers any free hosting.

dusk mirage
#

Well FTP is not thaaaaatt expensive

#

At least energy is expensive here

#

Well that sounds like the raspberry will be perfect for me

dusk mirage
#

Btw what are the suggestions for an SSD and according adapter ?

quaint jay
#

@dusk mirage It is important to use a good power supply when using an SSD. Ideally one that can supply 3A. This is all about peak current while writing to the drive, with some lesser power supplies causing voltage drops. I personally use the one that came with my CannaKit RPI4 bundle (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TYQRXTK) and it works great, it is also the one officially recommended by the developers in the home assistant installation instructions.

My suggestion for SSD and adapter (since they are what I use, and I know it works, and some adapters and SSD don't play well with RPI4) is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XLAZODE for the adapter, and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TDW86SQ for the SSD. But there are other combinations that work. There might even be cheaper combination, but I can't comfortably recommend a combination I have not personally tried. Perhaps some other people will chime in with what worked for them?

One last consideration, you might need to briefly make use of a microsd card to update the bootloader on the RPI4 before usb boot will work. You can use a small like even a few hundred megabytes is fine for this (bigger ones are also fine). Just make sure it has nothing on it you want to keep. Follow the "Using the Raspberry Pi Imager (Recommended)" part of the instructions on this site: https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-bootloader/ .

Hope this helps!

Trying to figure out hardware here. Youtube videos are not very clear. So far, it sounds like I need at least two devices to access HA. One to run it on (like a Raspberry Pi), and another to access that one through a browser (for a wall mounted touch panel). I have yet to see a setup that the HAOS is installed on, AND runs the touch interface from the same unit.

HA is a server and you interact with the interface through a browser. You cannot do both using HA OS, and it's a better practice to separate the two functions

Hi, is a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 RAM enough to run Home Assistant AND ZoneMinder with three WiFi cams on it?

winged knoll
#

The RAM is going to be fine, the CPU however... not if you want to do motion detection

fallen jay
#

Yes, I want to have motion detection and record only on motion.

#

So should I use two RPIs? One for HA and the other one for ZoneMinder?

winged knoll
#

You should buy something with a half decent CPU - motion detection is CPU intensive

#

If your cameras do a secondary low resolution stream you can reduce the CPU requirements, and a Pi4 may just about cope

fallen jay
#

Yes, the cameras have two streams. And I already have motion detection for 3 cams with RPI 4 using only the software "motion". It's working okay. But want to have HA and replace "motion" with ZoneMinder. My Budget is low.
But thank you very much. I have the option to borough a second RPI and test.

winged knoll
#

I'd suggest you look at Frigate too, it does object detection which is far more useful than dumb motion detection

fallen jay
#

Ok. Nice. But this wouldn't changed the hardware situation, I guess? I'll need a second RPI for it?

winged knoll
#

It won't, and you'd need a Coral stick, but you'll get much more out of it than switching to ZoneMinder IMO

fallen jay
#

Thank you very much. I'll have a look at this.

# fallen jay Thank you very much. I'll have a look at this.

do you happen to have an old pc lying around gathering dust? i have a setup of 4 old webcams doing motion detection via DOODS wired up to it and it's running HA on a VM. I can watch movies on it at the same time without a hitch. If your budget is limited, it don't get much cheaper than free. Just thought I should mention this

#

what Tinkerer said is much better - Frigate - but it's also eats more resources

fallen jay
#

No, I don't have an old PC. I use my cams inside the house so I actually don't need object recognition I guess. I will try to buy a second hand Dell T30 or T40 in a few months. In the meantime I will try to build the setup with two RPIs. ^^ Thank you.

#

PS: I have a lot problems with VMs even on my high end maschine. HA always stucks in a VM.

unreal oak

unreal oak
#

oh no, that thing is actually for the experience of building it

#

I know for a fact that the money spent on a well made solution would be cheaper than the time and effort as well as materials to build a custom setup that would also be janky in the end

#

but the experience of building it would make it all worthwhile because I learn a lot from experiments like this. And every time I'd open the curtains I'd feel a sense of pride, so there's also that selfish aspect to it

fallen jay
#

Sorry for annoying again, but I found a very cheap second hand desktop PC with a Pentium E6600 @ 3.06 GHz (Dual Core). Is this enough for Home Assistant? This PC only has 2 GB RAM, I would buy more RAM.

winged knoll
#

It'll perform better than a Pi3

fallen jay
#

and in comparison to a Pi4?

winged knoll
#

I'm gonna guess it's still better than one of those, though maybe not night and day

fallen jay
#

I want to run it 24/7.

winged knoll
#

A Pi4 has a Passmark (CPU benchmark) somewhere in the region of 800 to 900, and will consume around 6W

#

The E6600 has a Passmark around 1100, and the whole PC likely draws 5x to 10x as much power

#

(possibly even more)

fallen jay
#

so the passmark is much better, but power comsuption is really critical. It's hard to decide. Because a RPI4 is a compromise, too. ^^

winged knoll
#

I'd go looking for something newer that's also second hand

#

Laptops are likely to be a better balance of power and performance - particularly ones with a broken screen

fallen jay
#

Great idea. ^^ Thanks.

fluid hedge
#

I got a haswell itx machine (4xxx series intel cpu) which draws around 25 watts running proxmox and home assistant and some other stuff in virtual machines, some older stuff may be cheap but probably not in the long run. if the energy bill is an issue consider that HA may not be the most critical investment right now :)

fallen jay
#

Yes, I think the best option is to buy something which is officially designed for 24/7 like T30, T40, Intel Nuc or a custom server. But I have to save more money. RPI4 is a compromise. If I have a more powerful server, I can use it for backups of my PC, too. ^^
Thanks for advice.

Would something like this be easy to integrate in home assistant? https://github.com/Heckie75/voltcraft-sem-6000
I have one of these smart plugs but it's not zigbee, just want to read the wattage and perhaps see something like if my washing machine is running or not.

Hi, so I’m looking into building my first home assistant.
As of reading in the forums, a Raspberry Pi4 4Gb should be enough.
Sadly, now I can’t find a Raspberry Pi to order, so I investigated alternatives.
I found the “ODROID N2+ 4GB Odroid N2+, 6x 2,4/2,0 GHz, 4 GB RAM” which is used in the home assistant blue. Can I use this as an equivalent to a Raspberry 4 4G or how does it compare? Is it better/worse than a Raspi?

winged knoll
#

It's better

#

But then, so would be just about any 64 bit capable second hand PC from the last decade

#

64 bit, UEFI support, 2+ cores, 2GB+ RAM, 2K+ passmark

rough girder
#

I thought about this but they use a lot more power and I’m looking for silent operation

winged knoll

An old laptop doesn't use a lot of power, and is pretty silent

#

I have a 9 year old i5 laptop, peaks at about 10W (compared to 6W for the Pi4 or ODroid) and makes no sound unless it's loaded

Okay, thank you very much, I’ll try to test my old laptop for power consumption. I’m not sure if it will stay silent but we’ll see.

hi, i am a bit overwhelmed with choice of integrations and looking for some help. i have intel nuc 6cayc and 7pjyh that could run home-assistant but is there some way to get open and really low power 2.4ghz wireless devices and not bother with zigbee2mqtt or anything else? movement/light/temperature sensors for now 🙂

hard tinsel
tidal bridge
hard tinsel
tidal bridge
#

with wireless - all that nuc's already come with it or i could enable it on my access point

hard tinsel
#

If you're saying 2.4ghz but actually meaning WiFi, WiFi is power hungry by nature, and not really suited to small low bandwidth battery devices

tidal bridge
#

roborock s7 i have already use 2.4ghz wifi to access network and then to get controlled. i hoped it could be the same for other devices

hard tinsel
#

Yea, there are WiFi sensors, but like I say, they are just objectively worse. Roborock has a much bigger battery. When compared with zigbee stuff like the Aqara door sensors running on a coin cell battery for 2 years - that's just not possible with WiFi, maybe with the upcoming low power WiFi specs and thread in the future, but that's a way off yet. If you want low power and battery, it's pretty much a choice between Zigbee and Zwave imo.

try leaving your roborock off the dock station for a few days 😉

#

is there some premium variant of zigbee2mqtt dongle? or maybe mpci-e variant of it or something

There's no such thing as a zigbee2mqtt dongle, you want a zigbee dongle. Zigbee2mqtt is a piece of software which receives zigbee messages and retransmits them to mqtt.

#

I have a zzh! CC2652R - afaik it's one of the nicer (if not the nicest) one

#

could it be those readings of 280+V?

hard tinsel
# fervent ocean but just in case someone here would know... why could it be that the plug turns ...

I had exactly this issue with my cheap Aliexpress zigbee smart plugs. They'd work fine for a few days, then randomly turn themselves off, once they'd turned themselves off, if you tried turning them on again they'd just turn themselves off. Had to physically unplug them, then plug them in to get them to turn on again. The problem went away after a kernel upgrade (there was a problem with certain kernel versions and certain zigbee sticks).

# fervent ocean thanks anyway! 🙂

One idea that might be interesting, I assume your smart plug also has a physical button. Try stopping home assistant and see if it still does it. In my case, they still did it (on for like 3 seconds, then off). But at that point means you can rule out home assistant as a fault, and officially blame the hardware.

fervent ocean
#

yes, that's exactly what happened to me too... and after the first time on for a couple of seconds, the physical button doesn't work until unplugged and plugged again

#

it's been almost a month since I bought it in aliexpress so I hope the seller still wants to listen to me

fervent ocean
#

hard tinsel
# fervent ocean yes

Be interested in being kept in the loop. Since like I say I've had problems with this. I did get a new one recently and it has randomly turned off twice, but was fine to turn back on again. Have a feeling I might be entering round 2 with this problem 🙂

#

Mine show up in Z2M as TS011F_plug_3 and TS011F_plug_1

fervent ocean
#

this one shows as plug_3

#

but I read in z2m docs that the only thing is that it doesn't report so they're polling the device, isn't it?

hard tinsel
#

Yep, mine say they are polling too

fervent ocean
#

I actually find funny that it reads 283V as I have many other things plugged and nothing fried so far 😆

hard tinsel
#

sounds pretty dead, mine are reporting 246V, 246V, 247V, 244V, 230V, and 234V.

#

Although odd that there's such a range for a set of smart plugs all in the same house, not sure if that's how things are supposed to work.

#

I have another set of 5 of them in the post...so we'll soon find out if the issue comes back for round 2 😂 I imagine they'll all be the newer TS011F_plug_3

fervent ocean
#

there's a user in that post saying that they bought it from elivco and got a replacement, I hope I will get one too, because the seller asked me for a video but I don't have a tuya hub, so very likely they'll say that's why it doesn't work 😒

hard tinsel
#

just send them a video of you physically pressing the button on the side with no hub visible, solutions.

fervent ocean
#

you're really right XD

hard tinsel
#

although if it's anything like my experience with aliexpress returns in the past, they'll ask you to ship it back to them, and shipping it back will cost more than the cost of the device

fervent ocean
#

that's what I expected too... I think it was around 12€ for me

hard tinsel
#

Had that for a PD battery I bought which specifically said it could charge dell XPS, but didn't work on my dell XPS, while my other PD battery worked fine \o/

I guess I won't spend much more time trying to discover any workaround

#

I saw somewhere of people soldering another model so it at least reports power consumption, which is mainly what I want it for

hard tinsel

fervent ocean
#

but I have 0 skills on that and feels dangerous

hard tinsel
#

If you have that handy, I'd like that, pretty much all of my devices I am only using it for power monitoring.

fervent ocean
#

gimme a sec

#

this is another model though

hard tinsel

is it? the title still says TS011F o.O

fervent ocean

well, it looks different... maybe because it's the EU version?

#

but it's the same pic shown in Z2M for this model

hard tinsel

that's what I'm thinking, probably same device, same electronics, same firmware, just UK/EU version

fervent ocean
#

ping me if you manage to do it, maybe I'll buy a soldering kit... I'm thinking to learn to tweak the aqara movement sensors, but one thing is to solder little pins and another one is to play with electricity from the mains

#

the IP module itself for paradoxi s $100, and they are generally expensive for a shitty lan/wifi to serial module. Konnected is also expensive and not feasable to ship from US to EU. So my sonoff dongle arrived, was about time I upgraded from the CC2531

#

so new dongle means repairing all in ZHA and updating my automations, I suppose?

#

any shortcut?

#

import export of some sort?

#

and should i bite the bulliet and go immediately for zigbee2mqtt?

#

any advice or experiencess are appreciated

is there docs i could read about securing passive ble sensors like LYWSD03MMC? i flashed with https://github.com/pvvx/ATC_MiThermometer and it has HA-BLE mode and offers 'encrypted bacon'. is there a pki in place? or i just set a pin and it uses that to 'encrypt' bacon?

# rugged knot does anyone know if HA can run on a Khadas VIM 4 https://www.khadas.com/product-...

ofcourse it can run on khadas vim4. i have been thinking about getting one for myself but it won't be an official image. you will need to use their ubuntu/debian image and go from there. i am using intel nuc (repurposed from other project) with j5005 cpu + 32gb ram and it barely use any cpu and memory. damex@potato:/srv$ free -m total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 31696 643 30423 24 629 30646 Swap: 0 0 0 this is when it runs with homeassistant + quasselcore + postgresql for both of them

#

my issue with khadas vim4 is soldered emmc/wireless/ble, lack of case to fit main board + extension board and that it has only 100mbit poe port with extension board

omg i have had enough of that roborock s7 integration with HA. is there some open (and compatible) robot available? not valetudo that is just roots devices get rids of cloud integration

#

well, I did it. got everything set up on RPI3 and then somehow completely botched the system. only backup i had was a partial. now planning a completely fresh setup with ssd or usb drive. Do you all know if a USB 3.0 thumb will work well enough to use instead of an SSD? or should I avoid. reason is that i have both, and am trying to decide.

winged knoll
#

That'd be terrible

#

Thumb drives are slower than SD cards, and often have a lower write life

minor stag
#

would RPI4 require a fan or even a heatsink to be stable with HA and SSD?

winged knoll
#

No more than for any other use of them

#

If there's not enough airflow you'll want a fan and/or heatsink

minor stag
#

@winged knollhave you been successfull running an ssd directly from the board usb? with a 3amp PS? or did it require powered hub?

winged knoll
#

The answer is ... I haven't even tried

#

Other people have had mixed results running from the Pi - running with a powered hub is smarter

minor stag
#

@winged knollanother question, do you know if it will work with GPT instead of MBR?

bright jacinthBOT
#

@minor stag Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.

When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.

You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).

Okay, so... I have a HomeKit-compatible Ecobee SmartThermostat ("With Voice Control" model) that has been driving me and my family nuts with it either making things too hot or too cold. Not sure if the algorithms are causing it, or the thing not excluding sensors that it should, or what, but it's been a problem the whole time I've had it. I've tried adjusting settings and all kinds of things, with little to no luck. (I also would prefer something only local and not web-based, but that's a secondary concern.)
I went to replace it with a Honeywell T6 Z-Wave model, but that doesn't have control for things like humidifiers, dehumidifiers, etc (as far as I can tell).
What options do you guys recommend for resolving this situation? A new (local-control-only) thermostat? Smart plugs and/or some kind of controller or relay for humidifier control? I don't want to keep spinning my wheels and spending money on things if there's an "easy" solution to this. I use Z-Wave a lot for smart switches and bulbs, so adding to that might be nice, but I'm also know there's a node/device limit.

So trying to make noise alerts work on my Sonos is driving me nuts. It semi works but can't go back to playing music in scenarios like if I'm playing Spotify with my phone and having a Sonos speaker as output...

I'm playing with the idea of building a network of speakers just for alerts. Looking at both the nest mini and echo mini and placing a few around the house. Any other suggestions or preference between the two?

Otherwise I prefer the nest just since it seems to work slightly better with HA

gritty marlin

@proven girder this is awesome I'll have to give it a try! I'm fairly new to this can I run this through node red? Have you tried this yourself?

Anyone got a good recommendation on a reliable smart switch with a motion sensor connected. I've got a ton of Tuya based switches in the house but I'm not married to that system. Use case is for the garage. I'd like a motion sensor for when anyone is in there but would also like it to be smart controlled by the garage door sensor.

Is it safe to power an ESP32 via 5v jumper without ground? My ESP32 doesn't connect to wifi when 5v and GND are connected. However, it does connect when I remove GND. Is this safe?

gentle gate
sterile sandal
#

So the ESP is connected via 3 jumpers to a motor driver: PWM, DIR, GND. That motor driver board has a 12v input for the motor, I wonder if maybe it's using that as a ground?

#

It works using the microUSB, but on the jumpers it only connects to wifi when there isn't a ground. It will power up regardless if I add the GND jumper or not. So since it's powering up, I'm assuming the GND is being routed through the motor driver board.

gentle gate

And you connect it directly? I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure you need something in between to step down the voltage

proven girder

Can you integrate broadcast radio into HA through one, could try to get local air traffic radio 😄

But yeah might try, have some heaters that use rf to a hub that connects to wifi (that theres a HACS integration for), so if I can cut the middle man that would be great

I was thinking, is there a bluetooth tracker or something out there wich you can use to finde, your keys or purse and things? possibly with the possibility of sending an audiosignial and the integration in HA? Is there such a thing? Has anyone a tip? I was thinking something like tile or maby even diy? Any experience with those devices would be nice

winged knoll
#

Tile has an integration

proven girder
#

There’s the tile (as tinkerer said) or if you don’t care about integration then chipolo also has trackers

#

If you use apple you also have apples AirTag

grand marlin
#

Yeah. I was just wondering if there is a better solution etc. I made the big mistake of buying a ring camera once because i thought it would be good so I thought I better ask befor buying

winged knoll
#

The "find" type devices all tend to rely on mobile phones for the services, there's nothing that's 100% local AFAIK

proven girder
#

I wonder if you could try to detect it using an esp for local in room finding?

grand marlin
#

Well I have not tryied one of those so I am just trying to figure out if its worth it and working good

winged knoll

Yeah, a BLE tracker and something like ESPresence or Room Assistant would work

proven girder

What’s your use case of it

#

If you can tell us what you’re wanting to get out of the tracker then we can help

Have you used one of those? I am realy fishing for opinions on the different products :S

proven girder

I’ve used both, personally prefer chipolo as there’s nothing locked behind a subscription unlike tile. But ultimately it’s up to you

grand marlin
#

Ah ok thats good to know. So tile is subsription based? that must have sliped through my research, ok tile is out then. And where you happy with chipolo? Anything to be aware of?

proven girder
#

Nah tile has some things subscription based. Not all

#

Ultimately it is all personal preference

#

Some people swear with tile

#

Others with whatever else

grand marlin

Well basicly I want to know where my (lets say) keys are and if I still cant finde them I would love to let the tracker play a sound. Is there one from wich you would say it fits the discription? 😄

# winged knoll It works as any other BLE beacon

OH RIGHT! stupid me. Yeah perfect. I was thinking of automations like send message "you left XY" when leaving the house while the device is still at home... But yeah you are totaly right I can simply track that with a few esps with espresence i guess. yeah nice thanks

#

I mean it would be AWSOME if you could make the tracker itself ring when you leave the house without it but I guess thats dreaming

winged knoll
#

Somebody just has to build an integration for that - how easy that is depends on whether Chipolo have a published API for that

grand marlin
#

Well for exactly those kinde of questions I come here now before buying 😄

#

The only thing I cant seem to finde is if the chipolo can only be paired with one smartphone. For car keys it would be nice to use it on two devices

speaking of tuya platform. Some listings mention "tuya hub required" in big bold and I do remember reading a blog post or two that some devices need rgistration on tuya platform to get local keys.

does this apply to absolutly all tuya zigbee devices?

I think you’re being confused with Tuya wifi based devices, and Tuya zigbee. Zigbee should work fine no without a Tuya hub (they just say Tuya hub to ensure compatibility)

If they're Zigbee, then no, you can use one of the #zigbee-archived integrations and a lot of luck

hi everyone, I got an Aqara motion sensor and did the hardware hack to reduce the sleep time, but I did it with a pencil as I'm waiting to receive the conductive glue. What I notice is that sometimes it detects me and others doesn't even when walking in front of the sensor... could that be because of the graphite messing with the chip? As an alternative to HA built-in bluetooth tracking, the monitor script uses separate devices, usually Pi Zeroes, to track bluetooth devices.
It uses MQTT topics to relay device status messages to HA. See this forum thread for more.

There is also an add-on available for it.
