Gotcha. Just saying having one brightness level is incredibly annoying
Hey guys, do you guys know any moviment sensor for integration? i have a space where theres 3 smaller parts which i want to turn lights when people comes on, pretty simple. But for other requirements it need to be smart, for time and hours contraints. So, do you guys know about any sensor or hardware which i could do somehting like that?
Any recommendations on mesh wireless also for lots of 2.4 GHz devices?
Is there a water leak detector that will work with HA without a hub?
Asus routers provide good wireless mesh as you can use their relatively old routers and connect to aimesh
partially - the esp32 is working fine. It has an IR emitter and a temp/humidity sensor. currently I have set up two very basic automations. One to turn on the AC when a certain temperature is exited for 1min and a second one o turn off the AC when the temperature is below a defined limit. I'm still trying to figure out how the climate entity works and also how to work around my way the fact I have two different switches (on & off). as well as the need to look into efficiency of ACs and how to run them best
did a quick search for that Xiaomi sensor and they are cute (do they also support wifi? I can only see Bluetooth in descriptions) I'm using a DHT22 on my test setup and don't really see any issues yet.
If the DHT 22 is working fine then you don't need to change. I.have experienced degradation overtime. The xiaomi sensors are BLE and can be read by ESP32, the additional benefit you get is that you can place them anywhere (within 10 m) and not be connected to esp as with DHT 22. Also do consider using BLE iTag to control your ir transmitter. https://esphome.io/cookbook/ble_itag.html this can be handy to directly control esp when there is no WiFi or esp32 is having api connectivity issue
If interested in ble itag, I'll give you code where you can control multiple clicks - say 1 click on switch on climate and 2 clicks to switch off
Does anyone here use a Xiaomi gateway? If so, do you know how to listen to events off the device?
I just got the Aquara cube and im trying to figure out how to sense what side its on
Are you using AlexxIT's compone t?
so just to make sure I understood you right. You are using an esp32-ch9102X with an IR transmitter which get's info on temp via bluetooth from the xiaomi sensor?
Thanks for the offer on the ble itag but as of now I don't see a use case for me, except exercise. If the wifi is off I still have the original remotes.
I dunno about those ch9102x. I was taking about esp32 in general, you could just attach an ir transmitter led and use ir remote transmitter and ble components
The ble itag can be used anything within that esp or even create a different action in HA. For example switch on a light from HA
understood - in that case you might want to look into the ch9102x. it's an esp32 with ble integrated 😉
Any esp32 has a BLE integral in its chip. It is not because of ch9102x. That is just a UART driver. I think some dev kit version has this which replaces cp2102
Hey, I'm not sure if this is the right channel, but I was wondering if using plex with a nas would slow things down?
Not Plex installed ON a NAS, but USING a NAS as a media folder
Nah, NAS is built to serve files
Any recommendations for zigbee RGB lights above 800 lumens?
Hey everyone,
you guys have any recommendations for a motion sensor?
I need a indoor motion sensor, that is quick, and does not need any bridge (like the Phillips hue bridge).
So far I wasnt able to find a clear answer to supported motion sensors
So you are considering a wired sensor?
wifi would be my preferred choice
You can build one using esp, Reed sensor and a magnet. The compact one would be esp-01. However, you need to have a power source nearby as those cannot run on batteries for long
That would be less than $5
and how would that be integrated into home assistant then. Like, which integration 😄
Using esphome, it integrates seamlessly to HA
Okay thank you very much 😄
Earlier I incorrectly stated Reed sensor as I read as door sensor instead of motion. You use pir sensor
Okay, will have a look 😄
small hint - many PIR sensors like a 5V input to function properly
are z-wave products worth the high price? Without personal experience I can only guess the pros, which I think would be the 'low operating frequency offering better wall penetration and reach as well as the mesh functionality. Still when I search for products they always seem to be anywhere from 2 to 4 times as expensive compared to other systems.
The're expensive because they're a full standard. If you buy any Z-Wave Plus or later (500 series or 700 series) device then you know it'll "just work" with any other brand of device. That's achieved through testing and certification. Unlike WiFi devices which can do what they want, and Zigbee devices which don't have to be certified or tested.
Hi,
I am looking for some advice for a Temperature and Humidity Sensor that works on Wi-Fi. I have found the Tuya WIFI Temperature and Humidity Sensor that look good but from what I have read it does not work in HA. Dose anyone know what else is available ?
battery powered only?
yes preferably
only Shelly HT
@zealous dune Thanks I will have a look at it 👍
Is there a component yet to interact with electronic shelf tags via esp32 and this project? https://github.com/atc1441/E-Paper_Pricetags/tree/main/Custom_PriceTag_AccesPoint
Wifi and battery don't go too well. Consider the BLE ones from Xiaomi which could be read in Esp32. The esphome integrates well with HA. This is a cheap but reliable one and will easily last an year on 1 coin cell https://esphome.io/components/sensor/xiaomi_ble.html#lywsd03mmc
If anyone's after a Logitech Harmony replacement since Logitech have given up on them, there's a competitor coming later in the year that looks pretty good. Have confirmed with them that there will be local API support. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sofabaton/sofabaton-x1
hi guys! what do you reccomend for a cheap but safe method to monitor power? i want to hook up a lot of my appliances to monitor their usage as our power bill is through the roof right now
Hey Guys,
do you have any tips on which plant sensors to use?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
MiFlora comes up a lot
Yeah, i know about these 🙂
Sadly they are really hard to get 😦
I have hoped, that there are some good alternatives 😄
Does anyone know if you can update zwave firmware ota with home assistant
Also looking to see if you can download firmware off of a device and copy it to another
#zwave-archived would know about Z-Wave
thanks
Is the Blue shipping yet?
#330990055533576204 may know, that's the home of the Blue
Hi I'm having some issues with getting into the web interface, I've been able to run the OS successfully for a while in a VM with no issues. After I installed Samba, it must've moved or deleted my config.yaml file since it doesn't allow me to restart the server because there is no config file. I (stupidly) made a blank config.yaml file and rebooted only to be greeted with a 404 Error whenever I try to go into the web interface. It boots up the os all just fine I just can't get into the web interface. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
#330990055533576204 can help you recover
Okay thank you
Looks like these are Tuya based. Does HA support brightness and color control?
https://www.amazon.com/LED-Recessed-Lighting-Slim-4Inch-4Pack/dp/B095VWJHSF
anyone have a recommendation on zigbee outlets that have power monitoring? that are cheap, lol
Any specific reasons being on zigbee? If for wifi, sonoff have good products, not sockets though pow r2, dual r3
@peak talon i dont really trust the cheap wifi devices, only in the sense that it's basicly putting a node on your network that can spy unless you go through the trouble of making sure they can only communicate directly to the hub
Sonoff are a reputed brand. Regardless, you flash sonoff devices with esphome, hence you are not using manf firmware but esphome which is local and integrates seamlessly with HA
Search your local place for sonoff pow r2
There is other real use for zigbee in powered applications and actually a downside that if your zha /z2m stops working, you zigbee devices will as well (unless they are binding to certain drvices). Wifi with esphome will continue to work with or without wifi
wooooord, thanks for the info man
@peak talon i noticed alot of the sonoffs make you cut your cord and wire it inline, is there another brand that you can load esphome onto thats just the outlet plug style?
There are many. Sonoff S26 for example. The Shelly smart plug works with home assistant locally without the need to flash alternate software and has power metering (the S26 does not).
Instead of cutting the device cord, buy those socket extender (you get as small as 0.5m ) and attached the sonoff device there. I used that for my entire power strip so any device connected on that strip has monitoring . Something similar to this https://www.amazon.com/Pendant-Extension-Hanging-Lantern-Kitchen/dp/B08N9S2J89/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?dchild=1&keywords=socket+and+cable+extender&qid=1630987005&sr=8-16
just seems like alot extra compared to plug and play
finding the shelly plugs tho, availability is poop
Also the strain relief on the Sonoffs is not sufficient for an extension cord application. You need to house it in a suitable box with cord grommets. Like this:
Was about to state s31 is a good option. It just that its bulky and affects the decor. But if you are not concerned about that, it is okay
not at all, it's being used in a semi industrial application so idc
It looks reasonably easy to open. https://community.blynk.cc/t/hacking-the-new-itead-studio-sonoff-s31/21532
just would be nice to have a plug and play option without having to flash things, but you know giant corporations
Morning!
I'm going to buy wall switches for my new home and I have found the aqara line that looks nice and have good features.
I was looking for suppliers in Spain and the switches are priced between 40 to 44€. In Aliexpress the same switches pricing is arround 20-23€. Which for a full house is quite a lot.
I was wondering if any hub is the same or should i get one. The idea is to integrate it with home assistant.
Also, I have found the zigbeetomqtt project and that might be a very solid option to avoid xiaomi's hub.. But it misses some features that xiaomi hub provides.. So for now I think I'm going to buy the xiaomi and maybe buy the Z2M hub and play around with it.
Any recomendations on which hub to buy?
#zigbee-archived can provide lots of advice around Zigbee, but IMO Zigbee2MQTT is a better choice than any manufacturer's hub
warning: not all hubs work for all aqara switch models
Should the 5V pin from a PI/ODroid GPIO be able to power an ESP32?
A PI is a hardware device is it not? 😛
Yeah, but you're doing weird shit stuff with it, so that's either DIY or BIY (burn it yourself)
Google suggests yes you can, but
but experience tells me it doesn't work
ESP32 draws up to 0.25A, Pi can apparently output 1A to 2A, if you believe that
big if
Specs are a thing drawn up by marketing and have no relation to reality
Either Pi or Odroid it just never boots (LED flashed continuously) but using PSU works just fine
Faulty ESP?
If it was faulty why would it work with PSU though
was just trying to avoid another PSU in an already crowder place lol
Maybe for a split second it's drawing more than the GPIO can handle?
Maybe it's just a terrible idea?
Thanks @winged knoll and @zealous dune

I'm looking at various zigbee ceiling fan/light combos, is there a way to tell if these will work with HA ?
The #zigbee-archived channel has some lists of known working devices
thanks
is there something better recommended than Bond Bridge to control ceiling fans? (assume that I've got several fans with remotes already working and don't want to replace their control module with a wifi one etc)
Probably a simple one....is it possible to change the domain of a switch to a light?
I have a GE/Jasco z-wave paddle switch that controls a light and would like to be able to control it in an automation using the light.turn_on/off service.
@cursive yoke https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/light.switch/ is probably the easiest way, the switch will still exist, but it will also show up as a light
Trying to think of which is the best approach for this... #diy-archived message
I want to lower the mediaplayer volume during commercials and dont know whether to user my room assistant or the roku media player itself - or a equalizer of some sort
Does anyone have any experience with the Xiaomi Zigbee hub? I'm trying to listen to events on the hub but I'm not sure of which entity that I should be listening to.
If you mean the integration in HA then #integrations-archived is the channel you wanted
would it be an intergration as it in the listen to events tab?
But I also just saw that there is a Zigbee channel too, so that might help.
Well, the #zigbee-archived channel can't really help with random hubs
All the channels have topics that help guide what they can help with
anyone specifically used evisalink 4 for Honeywell alarm? it can't function as a keypad replacement... can it?
Hi! Any updates on the latest update and rpi3 boot loops? I've been hesitant to upgrade until I hear that's been resolved
See your installation method channel, likely #330990055533576204 but check

Hi Does anyone have a smart door/window sensor?
Made a small one with esp32, cr123A battery and a "magnet activated switch", (works with mqtt). If you like to build your own stuff it's a quite easy project to setup.
Should i buy a wifi one or with a hub? I wanted to buy the wifi one because its cheap but when i need more of them the wifi is getting slow and in that case a hub version would be better.
Wifi
Hub
Go Zigbee, and ditch the hubs
See the topic and pinned messages in #zigbee-archived
Having 30+ wifi connected IoT devices, never had a problem of "overcrowded network", but zigbee is a coherent approch if you are planning on having many of those and not planning on having a well developed wifi network (+vlans and stuff).
So if I connect a maximum of 14 it doesn't cause any problems
Or what do you think?
It's not just about not having a well developed wifi network. With Zigbee you have the array of battery powered sensors that you can't really accomplish with WiFi
hello world? I am new on this... but someone knows how to delete a DEVICES on HA??
does not look easy, the rest of all software smartthing. Hubitat, etc is a normal. HERE is a mission
That'd be #integrations-archived
@winged knoll NOP that device does not have any integration..
It’s coming from some integration
You can't have devices or entities without an integration
Hello, I have been looking at WLED and was wondering what hardware I need. I need to run almost 80m of RGBW LED strip lights and control them from a Json API
I'd direct you to their docs (https://github.com/Aircoookie/WLED/wiki) and Discord (https://discord.gg/KuqP7NE) for the best help with that
Hi! What do you think about Xiaomi push-pull electronic door lock:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002907408667.html
I want a push-pull smart lock for a new, yet to be ordered door. I would like it to be compatible with HASS or other open home automation system.
It says it works with HomeKit, so that's hopeful
I would prefer to have independent and free from "clouds" or offline working lock, maybe even with custom open-source firmware. I know this might be hard to get or hack. Just dreaming..
HomeKit is local, but whether you can get any device like that to work 100% offline ...
That's not a requirement
As for open source firmware on a lock - that could be good, and it could be terrible
I understand that. If it is made very well - it might be good, otherwise everyone can find its weaknesses
If anyone here has infitude setup, can you please send pics of your setup?
pls send infinitudes!
anyone know of a case that is also a mains plug for a pi zero w thats available for purchase - rather than a diy solution?
Where in the world? If I recommend you a UK solution, would that work?
US
yeah ive seen things by NODE, but i dont think they are for US
@winged knoll do you know of a US variant?
I don't live in the USA
ok thanks man
I just thought of something - is there a way to use your smart speaker (alexa) for presence detection (BLE) - I have one in every room (nearly) - that would be a huge convenience rather than purchasing 5-10 pi zero w's.
☝️ would be ideal
Hi everybody,
Does anyone have experience with the Magenta Smarthome base and it's integration into HA ?
This thing seems to be like an all-in-one hub for zigbee, homematic /homematic IP and seems to also be capable of WLAN.
It seems to be a tint product ...
I'm asking because Aldi (in germany) now get's it for a cheap price...
and having a backup hub for my Homematic might be nice....
The integration would be a question for the #integrations-archived channel - a quick Google turns up nothing
Anybody try Kauf bulbs yet? Curious on your take.
[ Deleted own message to re-post in the proper channel 😉 ]
Just a random question. Does anyone know what the lifespan of an esp32 is, when running 24/7
the chip itself should last you a long time
flash memory has limited writes so it can fail depending on how often you write to flash
I used the esp32 as a wifi module in my ac. I'm not gonna write to it any ore as long as it keeps working. Just wondered if I should buy a few for backup or that it will outlive the ac
there are plenty of components on the board besides the esp32 that can fail at any time
Hi, anyone running frigate NVR with a M2 Coral?
@cunning ruin there's #cameras-archived for that
Thanks
anyone around willing to explain how to select a network in the Shelly app for adding my first shelly s plug.... iphone 11 pro
the app doesnt seem to be able to find my wifi networks...
are they 2.4ghz capable
yes, some of them are only 2.4ghz.
ive restarted the phone, allowed local network, permission etc
to be sure: I need the app for being able to add a plug to HA ? (never had a wifi enabled device before...)
if you can't connect the Shelly to your local network how else is HA going to know there's a Shelly
ok..... thats a yes I suppose 😉
yes
right. and the 'host' the integration panel needs, is a per device ip-address?
if you trying manually I suppose yes. Once connected to your network HA will find them itself
ok thats nice. now how to get the app to recognize a network.....
that I have no idea
try a different phone 🤷♂️
or maybe your wifi networks have problems if none show up
technically the app doesn't see your wifi networks. The shelly does and the app tells you what it sees since it connects to its AP
wait, I havent yet plugged in a S plug, do I need to do that before trying to?
now that I plug it in, I can see it in the iPhone Wifi list, along with my other networks. Nothing in the app though. seems quite buggy this
I would suggest following SHelly's instructions if you don't know how to pair a new device
yeah, well, it says literally 'type the name (SSID) ....' And that is not possible, there's only a dropdown box, showing empty lines. That's why I came here.
Usually you first connect the app to your device then it asks you for your Wifi settings
I have no Shelly so maybe you can also just connect to the AP and go to its IP and configure the Wifi there
No idea 🤷♂️
@jade agate That sounds like some CSS or other front-end styling issue (because you see blank items in the dropdown). Try selecting one of the blank dropdown items
yes I figured that too, theres 1 in the middle with a slightly greyer background. I can not select it however. Also, most of the time, a red Error notification drops down telling me I am not connected to the wifi. which I am most definitely according to all other apps...
How odd: I connected the iPhone to the shelly network, was able to add the plug and configure it, even switch it directly. Then reconnecting to my Wifi, I can still see the device, but not toggle it (didnt connect it to the cloud btw)
and gone it was.... found this https://proptimise.co.uk/Latest/Home-Automation/How-to-add-a-Shelly-using-the-Web-UI had to connect to its own wifi AP, login on that default ip address, and change settings for wifi. ~After updating the device firmware, it was even discovered by HA. Yeah... thanks for your help! zipped the App.
Im thinking of smartifying my lights - I want do put dimmer modules in the switch boxes. Whats a good brand that has dimmer, non-dimmer and 1,2, 3 gang options for switch plates or modules inside the switch box?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Ideally something Zigbee - z2m compatible. Im in the UK and budget isnt that important (but lets not be silly 😛 )
theres quite a few module type things like this: https://www.samotech.co.uk/products/zigbee-dimmer-switch-hue-compatible/ but I worry signal will be awful since I have metal back boxes
theyre also quite chunky so might be a squeeze to get it in there
(I do have neutrals in my boxes which helps a ton!)
Hi, new here, doing research but want to get something out of the way. Are nest thermostats recommended or do you prefer something else?
I see that they were then they weren't now they are again?
Anyone here hacked on Aqara firmware? Got some Opple switches + wired light switch and wondering if there is a way to remove the delay on single press actions, looks like it's there to wait for a double press/triple etc
I am really interested in the Home Asssistant Glow (https://github.com/klaasnicolaas/home-assistant-glow) which seems to be a good solution to get measures of our energy consumption.
I just wonder what will happen if I do reboots of HA? I mean the consumption won't stop during booting bot what about the lost measures? Is there a way to store the measures until HA is available again and to deliver them after reboot?
the total counter is stored on the esp, not in HA
One of my GE Z-Wave switches just died. Instead of spending another $30-40 on a Z-Wave switch, I'm thinking about switching to some cheaper ESP8266 based options. Searching around, it seems like the Tuya based switches were the route to go until their recent firmware upgrades, which now require flashing manually. I don't have a problem doing that, but would rather not if I don't have to. Before I go down this hole, are there any other sub $20 z-wave or ESP based (tasmota / esp-home) physical switch solutions with quick US shipping (Amazon, etc...) that you all would recommend? I have zigbee as well, but it's the most unstable of all my home automation and prefer not to use it for switches.
Think I'm going to go with the Treatlife switches off Amazon. $40 for 4 pack doesn't seem bad as long as they don't burn my house down... Looking at the SS01S and SS02S models. Are the only differences in the paddle design?
Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.
When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:
- What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
- What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
- Is the problem uniform or erratic?
- What's the exact error message?
- When did it arise?
- What exactly don't you "get"?
- Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?
I have a couple motion/door sensors and an alarm setup, with a box for it all in my basement and I'd like to wire it up to a raspi or something and get it in home assistant
Have you looked at Konnected?
Checking it out now, thank you
@solemn knoll wired or wireless?
The system is wired
they are probably Magnetic (aka reed) switches so you'd need to know the voltage they expect and a pull down resistor. Do you have the original board?
also if you're lucky they may have a part number you can use to look up the datasheet
anyone here have a Zooz ZEN32 scene controller? The external switch I wired up doesn't seem to be working, anyone else ever have this problem?
Hey guys. Are there any devices similar to Sonoff Micro?
Hey guys, anyone work with the kasa color bulbs? trying to control their color
Anyone have experience with Cree Smart flood lights? any issues integrating into HA?
I have a G4 doorbell which I have tried adding to home assistant core version 2021.9.5 right now i am upgrading to core 2021.9.6 my issue is that I want google home to brodcast when the doorbell is pushed.
however it shows no binary sensor
in the list of g4 attributes i have tried reloading the unifi protect application to no avail. i can can actually turn off the camera and turn it back on but i can not view the stream nor can get the doorbell to do what i want
any help is greatly appreciated
Why is it, that the UK does not seem to have much in the way of simple, cheap controllable 4-gang plug sockets? There was some Tasmota-able ones rom "TCP" Who.. now dont seem to make them
because of course bloody not.
Hello everyone! 👋 i like tinkering and getting stuff to work, so since i got into home automation i wanted to try homeassistant.
I have a raspberry pi 3 with the sd card in it that i flashed with homeassistant, following the guide on the homeassistant website.
However, i cannot reach the raspberry pi webserver with http://homeassistant:8123/ or http://homeassistant.local:8123/. any idea?
when i look into my router, i see it finds a "homeassistant" connected by LAN cable.
You are in the wrong place. Go to #330990055533576204 for support with this.
oh...its hardware (raspberry) and thought this could be hardware help.
It's your installation method.
but see its booting now, simply took a while. apologise for posting in the wrong channel!
No worries. Welcome aboard.
Has anybody used the Tuya zigbee water valve controller with a ConBee II? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001051095315.html
I'd prefer zigbee over wifi, but haven't been able to find any discussion about it online
The #zigbee-archived folks may have, but the integration you use matters more than the stick
Besides Shelly Plug what's a good plug option for Power Monitoring in HA?
There's many Zigbee and Z-Wave options
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
US, Any budget, Zigbee or Wifi, Power Monitoring mostly for a few specific devices such as refrigerators. In case I lose power I want to know before the contents start to melt.
a simple smart plug will also know when the power is lost, it will be offline
Guys what is the humidity level like in your bathroom after shower? Mine never seems to be exceeding 90% and I don't know if it's correct, or if I'm just hitting my sensor's upper limit.
Has anyone here used ikeas tradfri motion sensor with HA ? Im playing around with one I bought today but Im not sure if the device is working or not
Is there a good power meter that is not a P3 kill a watt? I am looking for accuracy and something less than $100
Have a look at this: https://esphome.io/components/sensor/pzemac.html otherwise if you are not into DIY, the Shelly EM works well.
Anyone have suggestions for LED strips and a Zigbee or Zwave controller that would be battery powered for under cabinet lighting? I’m not so much worried about the LED strips since there seems to be a lot of options that are cheap but I’m curious about what people would recommend for the controller.
Also doesn’t necessarily have to be battery powered.
@vapid crystal I have bought a lot of Shelly devices recently and would probably go with a Shelly RGBW2 for the controller currently. I guess it all depends on how you want to drive the RGB changes.
The RGBW2 would be best for changes driven by MQTT or HA automations I guess
Ok thanks. I probably won’t do too much with RGB. Just a light on a timer for the morning and night.
but if you need to link the RGB values to something else more directly there could be other solutions
I have HA set a Hue bulb to an RGB color, lets say 200, 150, 80. But when I read back the color of the bulb, its slightly off, like 201, 151, 80. Anyone know why this is?
rounding or bulb firmware
hm bummer. i wonder if its converting it into a diff encoding than RGB and ends up being approximated
use the default color encoding in your automations
right, but what would that be?
looks like Hue bulbs use a 'Hue XY' coordinate instead of RGB
Anyone got any experience with flashing a Sonoff ZBB for ZHA?
struggling to get it to even talk with tasmotizer
follow the instructions
i have, it just wont connect
then you missed something or didn't wire correctly
Can I buy the Home Assistant Blue case for Odroid N2+ separately? The Home Assistant Blue out of stock, so I bought an N2+ separately. I'm looking at some 3D print models for the case (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4731369), but none of them look as good as the official HomeAssistant one.
Does anyone have any idea how to make a POE Injector smart so that the fire tablet just gets charged when the battery is down?
tripple checked them, by the looks of it, it's not going in to firmware update mode though as still reponding on the cloud app. Did notice the walkthough mentions using Z-RST as well. Should this be done before plugging in the USB adaptor though? And should ground and this pad be used at the same time?
Nevermind, need to use Z-RST as well
Hi!
Anyone know of a good smoke alarm that could fill these requirements:
- Preferably Z-wave (can be something else too)
- Battery Powered
- Stand-alone alarm (if home assistant is down)
- Possibility to either turn of smoke detection for a certain of time, or clear false alarm from home assistant
Price don't matter, and I live in Finland. I had Fibaro FGSD 002 devices, but there was no way of "muting" them on false alarms that are quite frequent in my household, and therefore I am looking for a replacement.
Hi. I was doing HA configuration for remote access via duckdns. I configured everything correctly in HA, but it turned out that I cannot forward ports in my router. I cannot login to HA in any way now. How can I force SAFE MODE to remove some lines from configuration.yaml? My HA is on raspberry.
Head over to your install method channel
If you installed by flashing an image to the SD card you run #330990055533576204
Anyone using eq3-max thermostats?
I’m looking for a device to replace my cube.
I Think i need a cul 868 device, but not sure which is good.
Hey, do anyone know a hardware which measure energy consuption for a bunch of wires at the same time? Can't be zwave, i want to put it in my energy box in my home to measure all the consumption by one device
Hi everyone. I have an older Fronius PV inverter which speaks MODBUS over RS422 (not RS485).
I bought a USB RS422 adaptor but have not yet got this working on my raspberry pi with home assistant. Does anyone have any experience with RS422 MODBUS?
Hi, I just received a Odroid-N2+ pre-loaded with HA.
How can I get the size of the installed eMMc module?
I tried via the terminal using ha hardware info but didn't find it. Thanks
In HA, the Supervisor-System gives the % used but not the capacity of the eMMc module.
guys, I'm thinking of modifying a simple zigbee door open/close sensor and use it as a water level detector. I would have the actual zigbee module in a dry place, solder a long cable to the on/off points, and have it end with two metal prongs in a water reservoir. This gets me a "closed" circuit and an indication that water is indeed in present in a reservoir. When the water falls below a certain level, the prongs dry out and I get an "Open" signal. Am I missing something or is this a viable idea?
Is there a XIAOMI Smart Multimode Gateway that looks like a puck that ISN'T Gateway 3?
https://i.can.ua/goods/7695/7695192.jpg
I'm asking a because a store has puck gateway, with the name I quoted and that image, but it doesn't say 3. While they have another product entry with 3 at the end but it's more expensive.
Of you do not want to be sucked in xiamoi garden, use a DIY hub, head over to #zigbee-archived if interested
Eh, I've already been using quite a few of Xiaomi stuff for the past 4 years. I just need the new Hub for E1 switches. I'm interested in getting into pure Zigbee setup, but at a later point. Thanks for the encouragement.
so im building a home assistant platform based on off-grid use. ive been looking at boards to use i like the n2+ like the blue uses does anyone any other suggestions?
Depending on how soon you need it, I'd wait until after the HA 8th Birthday announcement on Wednesday.
I've got a small PC that I use as a home server, and would like to add home assistant it it, what's the best installation method for that?
(It runs Ubuntu server ATM)
- #449717345808547842 - uses Docker, no add-ons, no supervisor, DIY
- VM with #330990055533576204 - has add-ons and supervisor
Battling with setting up groups on Tasmota devices firmware. I'm trying to use DevGroupName feature, but no luck. Anyone gotten it working yet?
Ready to use custom firmware for ESP8266 devices (including Sonoff)

They have their own Discord server or you can ask in #diy-archived
To answer my own question, yes, there's a Xiaomi Mi Smart Home Multifunction Gateway 2 Global (YTC4044GL) that also looks like a puck.
take note: not all gateways work with all aqara devices
Yes, for instance, H1 EU switches don't work with any Mi Home gateways and E1 switches only work with Mi Home Gateway 3. (They all work with Aqara 1S and M2)
Is there any benefit to getting a rpi 8gb ram over the 4gb?
Only if you are going to be using a lot of addons that will use that much memory. Unused memory is wasted memory.
What add ones would require lots of memory?
Dashboards?
Trying to figure out if I need it
Dashboards are frontend. I was thinking more like camera NVR servers.
Or image recognition.
Is the rpi capable of decent image recognition?
I would think I need something like a proper desktop with like blue iris for that
So coral stick + rpi 8gb should give me decent ability to do image recognition on a couple cameras?
Maybe I don’t need an extra computer for blue iris
Hallo i have a Problem with my Rasbary pi 3+
first I had no green light but after i tyed a normal windows image on the sd crad (that worked, i saw it on the monitor) the green light is constand on
does anyone has an idea to fix this problem
and sory if this is the wrong room for this
If you're having issues with the Home Assistant OS image then the #330990055533576204 channel is the best place to go
@winged knoll thanks 🙂
hello together, has anyone experience with encoding miLight remotes which aren't supported automatically by miboxer 2,4GHz Gateway ? the 2,4GHz remote is a modified miLight remote from Luxvenum
I'm looking for alternatives of this sensor https://www.amazon.com/Aeotec-Aeon-Labs-ZW095-ZW095/dp/B00XD8WZX6/ref=sr_1_2?tag=linus21-20&dchild=1&keywords=Home Energy Meter Gen5&qid=1628631410&sr=8-2&geniuslink=true Aeotec by Aeon Labs ZW095 ZW095-A Home Energy Meter Gen5, because i do not have zwave here, so zigbee or anything else i can integrate on HA would be ok, do anyone know one ?
Has anyone tried running the coral dev board for HA?
Anybody know if this works and is picked up by HA? https://shop.homeseer.com/products/z-wave-network-controller
I want to get away from the USB dongle solution I have now.
#zwave-archived would know - but it looks rather like a Pi 😄
would i5-5250u nuc + coral work well with frigate? would it be an upgrade from a rpi4b?
it does, doesn't it 🙂
I'll cross post there, thanks!
double the ram lol
Anyone point me to a link on installing the coral.ai usb stick hassio raspberry pi? It doesn't appear be debian based
Hass.io was the old name for the appliance like install option, that uses Docker. It was renamed in January 2020 and is now called Home Assistant OS (see #330990055533576204).
You'd probably want the #330990055533576204 channel - but generally speaking just connect it and go
Anyone know if I can use USB storage on an HA Blue device? The self hosted podcast reviewed the device but weren’t sure if usb storage could be used for more write-intensive things like logs.
Anyone know of any good ESP32 cases that don't impede signals?
#330990055533576204 can help there
A question about running HA on an RPI 4, 8 Gb. How much resources does it actually use?
I haven't found any specific hardware requirements except that an RPI 4 is an alternative and it (= the website) doesn't say that you'll get poor performance
I want to get started with HA and some other projects and am weighing my hardware/software options
A follow-up Q: is running HA more CPU demanding than RAM or vice versa?
Pi3 is the minimum. You can run it on any Pi4, but more RAM is always good
HA itself, the core software, doesn't require that much RAM or CPU. It's the integrations and the other software you install that'll change that
Biggest issue with the Pi range are the SD cards. They're slow and will fail - usually with little warning (since you're not looking for it)
gotcha, so an HDD / SSD is preffered
SSD > HDD
Due to faster read/write speeds?
And power usage, temperatures and sound.
right, I see. How would I gain an understanding of how resource intensive integrations will be?
thanks for the help guys!
Well, some will tell you, for others just apply the rule of thumb that the more you want it to do, the more it needs
Image processing is more intensive than, say, reading a sensor
If you're not touching image processing then a Pi4 should likely be generally fine - but if you want to run 20 other pieces of software, it probably won't be 😄
Hmn, I understand.
@outer herald When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
you are still talking about sensors here or integrations in general?
@outer herald When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get very frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar - you have to do this on every reply.
Or don't, and just wait for the recipient to get annoyed enough to block you.
@outer herald
@outer herald stop
@outer herald pinging
@outer herald thank
@outer herald you
being pinged by the reply is very usefull
if you are talking in several servers, it's nice knowing who replied
If you disagree, that's up to you, I'll just add you to the blocklist and never deal with you again - others here will do similarly and soon nobody will see you
As I said, that's your choice
You're not me, you don't get to tell me how I feel 😉
I didn't
I've never come across this before in all the servers I'm on
It's odd that the person replying needs to change a setting. Would make more sense for the a user to change a setting on their end "don't ping when replied to" imho
If only Discord devs agreed with you
appologies if you got annoyed Tinkerer. again this is the first time I've encountered this. I didn't understand it was meant for me
You were tagged in the bot messages... how ... never mind
Ordered a Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p, i5, 8gb, 128ssd for a dedicated HA box. Will see how well it works..
Does anyone have any recommendations for zwave smart switches that will be used on a powered receptacle and whole house fan?
I know the zooz switches says not to use them in both of those scenarios
is this the right channel to ask about problems with an RPi 4?
If it's a problem with your install, no
oh ok
That would be best done in your install method channel
well
ohhhh yeah no it's a problem with the actual RPi
one sec, i'm just typing out what i've already tried lmao
i'm not getting any kind of video out with literally every image i've tried. i'm trying to get it to boot from a 500GB external SSD but it's really not working out for me. as for what i've tried already:
- i've installed the "USB Boot" firmware update through a microSD card and the official Raspberry Pi imager
- installed the latest Raspberry Pi OS onto the same SD card through the RPi imager, still no video out
- installed Hassio to both the SD card mentioned and my 500GB external SSD
i'm just gonna see what the blink code says when i try to boot Raspbian from the SD card
it's staying solid green
What about the power LED?
If you can't even get Raspberry Pi OS booting, I'd suggest the Pi forums are the best place to troubleshoot
it's showing up in my router's settings page as "homeassistant" too
well it did when i had the SSD with Hassio plugged in
this is super weird. i think you're right about trying the Pi forums
i'm not even getting a bootloader video out when i have no storage plugged in
i had identical problems with one Pi that i sent back but i found a workaround for the one i have now that didn't include video out
i'm thinking this is a PEBKAC error 😂
so, ignore everything above. i'm just a dumbass. i was using the IP address of the Pi to try and log in but homeassistant.local:8123 works just fine
http://ip:8123/ should work too
SSH won't, because you don't have any running SSH server on it yet
is this the channel to talk about Amber? 😍
@devout cairn I think so
Looks SICK
I am kinda sad I bought a zzh, but I can run other stuff on a box with a zzh plugged in
I have an optiplex that I got for free that I run ~25 docker containers on. ha included. so I probably won't get it. but it still looks awesome!
And there is now #yellow-archived
Phew
#yellow-archived looks great, but why only usb2.0?
See the #yellow-archived channel
Hi! I just stumbled over your message now. Does your Fronius inverter support SolarAPI over LAN? I just rewrote the fronius integration, but have no device with the older API version to test. Could you help out by testing it?
I use optiplexes for various things - good/cheap little boxes
Does the Odroid N2+ (aka Home Assistant Blue) have a host-based energy sensor? Maybe export something from Glances?
#330990055533576204 would know if there's anything exposed
The IG TL does not have a LAN interface, which is why I am trying to get to talk to it with a serial interface. Given the age of the device, i don't think that you should worry too much about it :)
Has anyone had any luck integrating a homewerks Bluetooth bathroom fan/speaker into home assistant? It seems to only work based on buttons on a hardwired switch.
Nevermind, I found it in blackadder's website
Ah ok, thanks. I guess these were used with an external Fronius Datamanager then. Well we aimed for maximum backwards compatibility and jumped through some hoops to reach it so thats why I'm especially intrested if it works on very old devices 🙃
I'm planning to set up Home Assistant and Frigate at my home. Will HOme Assistant Amber be enough for both services inside container or should I buy some Intel NUC to handle both containers?
If you have a Coral card/stick then yes
Hey there, I'm pretty new to Home Assistant, but I would like to get into it. Currently I'm living in a small flat and I'm in possesion of few Xiaomi BLE thermometers and bulbs. I'm planning on running Home Assistant on a RPi 3B+.
What I want to ask is whether it's a good idea to buy Xiaomi Gateway 3 (ZNDMWG03LM). I would love to have few light sensors, bulbs/lights and buttons by the end of the years and after looking at https://github.com/AlexxIT/XiaomiGateway3 it seems like it can be done with that. I can buy it for a fairly good price (~$25) and because the flat is really small it seems like a reasonable thing to do.
Second thing I would like to ask: Is there a TRV I could buy and use with Home Assistant out of the box without buying any more hub? I would like to put it in ONE room only, so buying another appliance seems like an overkill.
Thanks for any advice! 🙂
If you want Zigbee then I'd go with either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT (see the #zigbee-archived channel) rather than some third party gateway/hub
You'll also then have the choice of a range of TRVs - and that channel has a pinned message with known working hardware
Ohh that's nice, Haven't expected this tbh. Do you think this device can handle Frigate with 4 cameras?
With a Coral stick/board
Yea, got it. I'll have to calculate total costs and choose more affordable solution, but at first glance HAA should be better there.
AFAIK i5 NUCs are starting at 350£
Or buy them second hand 😄
I run HA and other things on an i5 laptop that's some 8 years old
Decent quality second hand pc hardware pretty much doesn't exist atm in the place where I live unfortunately
It's not much more expensive to get new off the shelf than to buy used items
Also I'm looking out for power consumption, as it's going to be 24/7 on
here newer means lower consumption
and yeah, HAA is winner
Anyway, it's good to have choices, and it's even better when you have ~ 40 days to make decision 🙂
Good morning/afternoon
I'm getting new bt router with swapping to FTTP (forcing me to update my smart devices) so im thinking of getting my own wifi network separate and using router to only deal with the traffic to the provider.
I have good connectivity all over the house (not a massive house) so the main needs for this are, not to have to change if provider router changes, and as i learn manage the network better, a guest network maybe and ability to hide networks or add boosters ext if required (garden). (i have done a little research but ill do more but after any advise)
main use on network will be to run home assistant devices (mix of zigbee devices over sonoff zigbee bridge, sonof tasmota basics, and some wifi plugs) and streaming services (currently 3 tvs and kids tabs/our phones)
budget about £100-£150 ish but not set in stone (any recommendations) sorry if wrong room
Double NAT can cause issues
You'd be better off with a mesh network that supports multiple SSIDs
thanks for info ill take a look and recommendations
without spending money i split my wifi into a 5ghz network and a 2.4 Ghz and have everything that can use 5ghz band on 5Ghz which basically just leaves things like sockets and bulbs on 2.4ghz. Streaming sources are internet or from my nas systems and they have a 1GB wired link to the router so streaming is on the 5Ghz band and doesn't interfere with the 2.4ghz stuff.
bt router you cant split 😦 you can turn 1 off but cant split but thanks for replying
See, you just need a better ISP. One that allows you to use your own router 😄
well you can get a better router that you can split wire an ethernet cable between the bt router and your good router via the lan ports and turn off wifi on the BT router.
You still get double NAT there though
but them thats also not future proof if more or deals change and next provider i need doesnt, thats why i try to get something that can plug into any router. just looking at deco m5 video
In theory since this is FTTP it should be possible to replace the router
@quaint verge When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
not lan to lan you have the same lan addresses
Yeah, as long as you're using the other "router" as an access point, not a router
yep 🙂
Most FTTP ISPs should allow you to use your own router
The really crappy ones will, but if you're going to chase cheap over quality you get what you pay for
https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/ is a good place to discuss that - lots of folks there who know both what's supported, and what's possible
vodafone in ireland has been ok but they seem to change my external ip at 4am most mornings
well i have some stuff to look into anyway now, thanks ill look at mesh network as seems if i change provider and new provider is not following same setup i should just be able to plug mesh into new router and ill be back online. thankyou
is there anyway to turn off a chromecast, its keeping my monitor awake
i believe you have to disconnect the power, i have a few things like this so i plugged them in via mains and not 5v and went via sonof smart basic switch to controll power
yes was hoping there might be an alternative i have a few sockets i can switch I'm basically using a monitor soundbar and either a chromecast 3rd gen a chromecast with Google TV or a 3rd gen apple TV they all have + and - points the monitor is happy to switch between 2 hdmi ports automatically if only 1 source is active.
The chromecast is fairly nice as it can switch the rgb lighting at least with spotify and youtube but it hogs the monitor.
im a firestick user myself, but i have used interaction to talk to the firestick to do specific tasks, not sure if you can do anything with chromecast
good luck
you can kinda talk to the chromecast via a google mini.
i guess i should build a matrix and figure out the best combinations
Hello from Barcelona! Is there any mini PC specs recommended for HA??, i dont like to go for the raspberry Pi if there is something like a good mini PC at similar price, thanks 🙏🏼
Any second hand (64 bit) PC from the last decade
2 GB or more of RAM, at least 32 GB of disk space - more of both aren't going to hurt
Chipset? Atom? Celeron? Doesnt matter? Ty
Not Atom
64 bit matters
I'd go for i3 or better, but it really depends on what else you're doing on that host
Hello ! Im new to HA and now i finally got it running on pie 3. I was wondering what i need to get something like Ikea smart products to work ? I need somekindof getaway but should i go with the Ikea one or is something else better ?
I'd recommend you buy a #zigbee-archived stick and pick from ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT
Where would be a good place for me to look for trouble shooting tips for HA on Virtual box using nortek zigbee\zwave device
On the HA seeing the stick side it'd be #330990055533576204
Troubleshooting #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived would be in those channels
I think its a vbox issue HA issue but im not sure.It was working fine. I took a snapshot before upgrading and now no amount of restarting unpluging and repluging in seems to have fixed it
Is there any specific stick you would reconmend ?
Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.
Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.
Does anyone know why my Home Assistant instance is running slow? My current hardware is a Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB with the official power supply and a Samsung 32GB SD Card.
See your install method channel for help troubleshooting that
What exactly do you mean by that?
-> Info -> Installation Type
There's a channel under Installation Method that matches
Installation Type Home Assistant OS
Hello, I switched from SmartThings to Home Assistant. My devices include several SmartThings multipurpose sensors. My problem, however, is that the battery of these now drains very quickly (instead of 1 year, they last 3 days). Does anyone have any idea why this could be?
Home Assistent OS in Raspberry PI 4B 4GB with ConBee II + SmartThings Mutlipurpose Sensor STS-MLT-251
Sounds like you want to ask in the #zigbee-archived channel - I'd bet on mesh (signal strength) issues
@winged knoll Okay thanks, I'll ask my question there 🙂
Can anyone help me to understand RF Bridge 868 Mhz?
I have some devices running rf 868 Mhz, EQ-3 Max radiator stuff.
I have earlier asked about cul 868 device, but i have now learned RF Bridge 868 Mhz is the same... ish?
Anyways... i just need to understand if i can buy any RF bridge and it works with HA?
Greetings! Apologies if this is the wrong place and if this is a dumb question, but I’ve been searching and can’t find my answer anywhere.
I just added a new Z-Wave device to my HA instance, and it works perfectly. It doesn’t seem like this new device is being reported to Apple HomeKit, though, and I’m not sure what to do.
I’ve restarted my HA instance, but that didn’t help.
How can I force the new device, which works perfectly in HA, to show up in HomeKit?
I’m using the HAAS Bridge integration in HA to make it talk to HomeKit, if that helps.
All my other (preexisting) HomeKit devices that route through HA seem to be working fine, it’s just that my newest addition to HA isn’t being reported to HomeKit.
Never mind, it finally just randomly showed up lol
@obsidian ice Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
If you don't get any responses after an hour or more, and your message is no longer on screen, it is fine to re-post or post a link to it.
You'd posted in the right place to begin with - the #integrations-archived channel
Well, if you "recover" that partition you just wiped everything
Your Windows PC doesn't know about that file system format
I'm not overwriting anything, just scanning.
not using windows
Stellar Phoenix WDR

I'm hoping it can at least recognize something.
Regardless, #330990055533576204 is the channel for help with recovering your system
If the host starts, they can help you there
Ohh, that might give me a fighting chance - thanks Tink!
hello, not sure if this is the right channel. I am looking for a way to implement lighting control. The idea is to have a physical switch on the wall to turn on the lights, but I can also assign other actions to the button.
I bought a ZigBee wall switch now, but clicking the button does not update its status in Home Assistant. Besides, I cannot assign any other action to the button.
The functions I am looking for only offer wireless buttons? In case of failure, I will not be able to turn on the light.
I imagine that I have a wall switch with, for example, 3 buttons. Pressing each of them switches the lighting, and holding it down brightens / dims the light. I was planning to use wall switches and smart lightbulbs but it seems wrong way?
can you suggest a switch ?
If you're using ZHA then the "switch" sends events
if I click the switch it does not update in home assistant, is there a workaround ?
Are you using ZHA?
yes I am
Then the "problem" is that there's no entity to update - it uses events
The #zigbee-archived channel can, if you remember to mention that you're using ZHA, help explain how it works
Anybody used the Ecowitt soil moisure sensors? Any idea how good the range is, I'd like to only have one 'weather station' to cover the whole house, but internal brick walls is always a pain when it comes to wireless sensors. I'm up for other soil moisture sensor recommendations if there are any! (UK based)
So I'm looking to set up a way to track when the washing machine and dryer are running or not, but neither appliance is within range of my wifi network
I live on the third floor of an old single family home that was converted into student apartments, and the washing machine and dryer are in the basement
What are my options in terms of connectivity between a sensor down there and my wifi up here?
if its the same curcuit box you could maybe try powerline adapters
else LoRa, maybe zwave but i suspect the signal being very weak… same or more so with zigbee.
zigbee and a router in every floor could also work
hey y'all, i'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but my harmony is just about dead. Wary about buying a new one given logitech is abandoning them. Wife still wants a physical remote. any recommendations?
(not sure the current remote is going to last until the yio remote 2 comes out)
YIO remote MKII will be released Q2 2022. https://www.yio-remote.com/ The first one was very well received. It has a Home Assistant integration. https://vimeo.com/566721352
Yep that’s the one I plan on eventually getting, just not sure my harmony is gonna last another 6-8 months to make it there. Hoping for the best!
Hi all, I am looking for a deadbolt for my manual garage. This product is exactly what i want, but its restricted to their opener. https://www.bnd.com.au/product-detail/auto-lock/. Anyone have any recommendations? I am fine with esphome flashing etc, to the point where i am thinking of just getting a standard deadbolt and a servo. Thanks a lot.
I have a pi4 with an external SSD for home assistant.
Can I consider the new Amber an upgrade?
It have built-in ZigBee module and m.2 support. Is there some else cool features that I could consider an upgrade over a normal pi4?
Please quote me if you answer
Any experience here with Aqara devices? I'm seeing reviews saying they deviate from the Zigbee standard & tend to have issues, and others say they work great.
Considering getting some of these devices, temp and motion sensors, to use with a ConBee II USB stick (and later with a Sonoff hub modded with Tasmota)
What ZigBee module are you using?
I don't have ZigBee devices.
Ah ok, was responding to your post where you state you have a built-in module and m.2 support.
I still can't understand what is the amber purpose. It's a pi with added ZigBee module. There are other cases that adds m.2 slot to the pi. So I don't get what is the point of amber.
Hey guys, I'm pulling out my hair over here trying to get a bluetooth dongle to work with my Home Assistant docker. I have one dongle that works, but the range is too short to pick up all my mi flora sensors. I'm running HA on an unRAID docker, and the farthest I've gotten is that when I run dmesg in unRAID, I get a -2 error that the firmware isn't found my device (the firmware being rtl8761b_fw.bim). I have this file on my windows PC, and I figured I should be able to place it SOMEWHERE to get unRAID to recognize it, and in turn use it in HA. Any thoughts?
are you running os in a vm or a single container?
just a docker container. My linux/unraid knowledge is a bit limited.
you could try placing the fw in /usr/lib/firmware
thats usually where the kernel looks for these
Yeah, I tried that but I may have screwed it up. I think the file structure didn't exist so I created it. It leads me to believe unraid doesn't use that or something.
could be the case, you will have to look that up for unraid then
Yeah, I haven't been able to find anything so far. Is there a long-range bluetooth dongle that people recommend?
Does anyone here use an electric projector screen with home assistant ?
What’s everyone’s favorite zwave stick? I’m looking at zoos, but wonder about others.
Not sure exactly where this belongs but I'm setting up HASS on a Virtual Box VM and I'm trying to setup zwave and zigbee but not seeing the device. I made the mistake of trying Hyper-V first... I have the USB device added to the settings of virtual box but I don't seem to see the device when setting up the Addon and Integration
#zwave-archived channel can help, but buy a 700 series for your region
Any suggestions for outdoor temperature sensors that can survive in - 15°C? I'm a bit hesitant to use something with a battery
Or are there any smart sensors that have the temperature sensor on a chord?
oho, I'll take a look. Thanks! 🙂
You can hook them up to ESPHome or Sonoff devices running Tasmota.
Cheaper on Aliexpress too.
Can someone help me with an issue? I do have a Moes Zigbee Shutter connected thru Deconz. Detected as TS130F. in HA state and position is reported and indicated correctly. Current position 100 as open. Anyway when I sent cover_close command it opens and when I sent cover.open commad it will close. This resolves in the problem that the arrows in the UI are reversed.
Anyone using e-ink displays for HA?
I found this interesting unit: https://uk.banggood.com/M5Stack-M5Paper-ESP32-Wifi-+-bluetooth-Development-Core-Board-V1_1-with-Touch-EInk-Display-4_7inch-960X540-180-Viewing-Angle-p-1864087.html?cur_warehouse=CN&rmmds=search
esp32 with touch enabled e-ink display in a "tablet" form factor.
tempted to try it as dashboard

Anyone know of a a cheap Zipbee/ZWave button I can get?
Use Case: I would like a button on my desk I can push that will turn on the smart lights in my office. Getting up to go to the light switch is just too difficult. 🙂
Zipbee?
Yes, it rhymes with Zigbee.
Whats up everybody, hope this is the correct channel this time :D...Just wanted to ask what the easiest / best / cheapest RGB LED strip is? Plan on having quite a few things lit up via RGB LED Strips and all the vendors, controllers, outdated information and stuff make things confusing. Running home assistant via docker and have an MQTT broker (mosquitto) as well as zigbee (zigbee2mqtt) set up and working flawlessly!
Question on temperature sensors and thermostats. I have an ecobee thermostat (not zoned in my house, unfortunately) and I also run Aqara sensors for various items. I would like to poll the temperature of various rooms and control the thermostat with that information. Does it make sense to just go with the ecobee sensors and let the thermostat run the show (expensive) or pick up the Aqara sensors and integrate them with HA? Has anyone done this before? Would love some examples. The Aqara sensors are super affordable and I’d probably need to pick up a dozen or so.
Hey everyone, I recently got an Aqara motion sensor and modded it to detect every 5 seconds. I found that HA doesn't update that fast and I needed a script to do this. My issue is that the script resets the state of the motion tracker and then immediately turns it back on. The reset would make a light flicker or things turn off and on really quickly and I was wondering if there was a way around that?
Which Zigbee integration are you using for it?
ZHA
Then head over to #zigbee-archived and see if they can help you solve that
Ah my bad, thanks!
i noticed that home assistant cloud offers a nice TTS feature. Is it possible to use the echo speakers (amazon alexa) as outputs?
https://github.com/custom-components/alexa_media_player/ is what you're after
is there a list of supported outputs?
Well, outputs for tts are media players
So, if that creates a media player, then yes
ok
hmm
i know there is a way to make alexa say what i want, did that already with node-red
Sure, see the link I posted
@winged knoll thx, so this is the local version without cloud. nice thx
any chance of integrating this into HA?
I have one arriving today
I think I can flash Tasmota onto it via tuya-convert - but I’d prefer to just keep the firmware stock and integrate it into HA as-is
So I did a thing with mikes mount and wired up the power to wall mounted fire10D with a zigbee on off switch so it runs down to 20% then turns on switch until 99% battery , just love kiosk integration for this 🙂 <---- statements like these show I am only a month and half in lol
hi, i am trying to connect my power meter Landis & Gyr E350 with my home assistant supervised setup running with docker-compose on synology nas with DSM7.
I noticed there is an integration for it https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/dsmr/ which supports my power meter. It is connected with an usb-to-serial converter (FTDI) to optical IR sensor.
I previuosly used this with node-red and a raspberry pi, so i know that it works.
When adding the integration the ttyUSB0 device is found (which i confirmed to be the ftdi device with lsusb on the host). As of the documentation, it says my power meter device uses DSMR v4. with both options set, i get an error when i try to add the integration. Is there a way to see what happened? logs? supervised runs in privileged mode
Anyone know of good smart vents, preferably ZigBee, that have good shape choice. I need square ceiling ones but it looks like Keen Flair system are all rectangular
has anyone purchased contact sensors from ali express? if so are these any good and last question (dumb i know) do I need a zigbee hub to get them working?

is it bad to charge a tablet 24/7? I see mixed results with my searches. It is an HD fire 10 running HA in Fully Kiosk, powered through 5v 2a hard wired charger
most newer tablets have a trickle charge when they top off and will stop charging when at full capacity.
i have had one plugged in for months with no issues
but YMMV
you'll need some kind of zigbee hub/stick yes.
do you recommend any that dont break the bank?
@weak belfry I have wire from tablet going to 230v convertor and then zigbee switch (that was 13.99 on amazon with a rf wall switch (which i did not need but it fitted the bill) to live and neutral and setup the automation through kiosk browser plugin info that if battery is bellow 20 turn power on to tablet, when battery is 99% turn off power. Yes it is not good have a device plugged in 24/7
I got an email from the guy that sells the mounts and he said modern tablets don't have this issue anymore
what is your budget/ current setup?
@weak belfry modern tablets dont have issue with over charging, modern batteries have a issue with being charged 24/7
its that last few percent of charge thats bad, you can research that btw 😛
tech I know, homeassistant still a noob 😛
what zigbee device do you use to regulate the charging
Anyone have experience with the withings sleep monitor?
I just installed an Ecobee thermostat yesterday and am trying to connect it to HA via the integration. I disabled the 2FA authentication on the Ecobee site. However I am still unable to login to the Developer site to obtain the API key? Any other ideas on getting this working?
dont use the actual rf switch just the zigbee module in place before the 230v to 5v convertor
and zigbee2mqtt picked up the module instantly
Will the Coral AI require installation on the Amber or is it rather plug and play? And which version coral should I buy?
https://amz.run/4uLq this would work too?
right now current setup is running hassio in its own vm on my server and i have a broadlink rm pro4 for rf/ir thiings
just starting out so gettting the hardwre sourced first
so this in conjuction with the aqara contact sensors?
works for me. Though the distance of sensors to the stick plays a factor too. Mains powered zigbee devices act as repeaters, so you might end up needing one or two of those. I have a zigbee smart plug upstairs, downstairs, and then the stick is in the garage.
my contact sensors upstairs connect to the smart switch upstairs, which connects to the zigbee stick
@weak belfryyes if home assistant can turn it on an off it will work (if your tablet converter is through the light switch.
thatd be fine i plan on using some smart switches/outlets on all three floors anyways so theyd act as a relay between themselves and Ha if i understand correctly?
I would read up on zigbee and how it works- don't take my word for it. You want to understand it before you start buying devices 🙂
true
but then i wouldn't have anyone to blame to my wife...
Any 1 knows a good automatic door lock that works with wifi or ethernet, I have a cat5e cable next to my door, and that works great with home assistant
And thats powered with the cat5e cable via POE or low power through the cable
@rocky pawn I actually dont think I have seen any wifi ones or zigbee and I dont know if current poe doorlocks would work with HA
I am a tech guy so no a fair bit but I am only a month or two into HA and have not looked that far yet. I know a brand called Assa Abloy from military days but not much more than that
Yea most of them are battery powered and use a hub :/
yep not sure though you may be able to do something with the Assa abloy poe locks as they can be opened via the poe connection too if I remember rightly
does anyone have a good suggestion on a smart deadlock that will work with home assistant? bThanks
Morning all, I'm currently using a 2012 blade server with HyperV for HA but from what I can see this does not support the use of external USB / Serial ect .... what would people recommend for a quite resource intensive setup ?
@drifting grove if budget allows a good intel nuc and run dedicated ha os
@valid frigate Just what I have been looking up I have a few Nucs in my spares box .. most have either 4 or 6gb ram and 500gb of hard disk space ... would you say promox is best way to go or direct install ?
I am no Home assistant expert tbh, only 1 and a half months in (but I am a tech journalist) more is always better in my eyes but thats just me.
I have tried all of various ways but find the best way is direct install of os via balena etcher as described in generic x86 install on site, I done that 2 a quad core small pico device for my final install (after trying pi, docker, VM on nas VM on server and then moved over to dedicated device
Yeah i usually say the same here, was looking at the new raspi to be honest with the high ram ... with a 10 room setup and 8 10" fire HD tablets for room control ... not actually tried the balena etcher with HA before may give that a shot once I've finished backing everything up.
its easier than creating a windows boot usb and quicker 😛
just through you SSD into a dock, run belena as described, write image to SSD (i presume your hard drive is SSD) them pop in nuc done 😛
through is trow stupid mobile autodetect.
are you going to stream live cam footage to all 9 tablets
8
That is very true !. yes and no to the live cam, I've basically created a Room based dashboard and each one has a tab for security where the cameras will show live 🙂 ... so there is a possibility but from my understanding they wont stream to the tablets unless they go to that tab
Don't suppose you know how well a HA backup handles a vast change in hardware ?
well I went from a pi, to a docker (that was not good) but from the VM to VM and then to the dedicated machine was fine, just had to reload certain integrations (not reinstall, but reload).
How do you configere your fire hd 10 tablets? I too have 4 of them and am using fully kiosk browser
I have the HA app installed on my portables and on the in/on walls tablets I am using kiosk as well 🙂
You arent the guy from mbmounts by any chance ? Got my wallmounts from them
Did you use firetoolbox to get rid of ads and get google store and another launcher?
I do have to say for the price mikesmounts make some really nice ones very close to product size too.
Hey, I have a question surrounding the wiring of a shelly relay - I live in the UK and have loop at switch wiring (with metal back boxes) (https://www.flameport.com/electric/lighting_circuits/lighting_loop_at_switch_newcolours.png). I have want to install a shelly 1 and want to confirm that my wiring diagram is correct: https://imgur.com/a/F66dSGu. I'll be sure to run it past a qualified electrician aswell, but want to make sure that it makes sense...
he he Rpage, you are in same boat as me with crazy uk lighting, I just ended up getting someone in
seeing others ask similar: i just got the notification about Amber. if i'm on a rpi4 with argon case and m.2...what's the point?
is this just a smart "get started easily" package?
e.g., people don't need to learn how to flash etc
See #yellow-archived for chatter on amber
The point is ... people who're new to HA or running on something even less capable than a Pi4
Both of those people
and here is me debating should I get a mini pc with proper nvme port for my spare 2tb seagate nvme
I run my HA in hyper-v on my windows server that does a lot of things (Plex etc). Works great for me.
only issue would be if you needed a USB for zwave or whatever, for that you'd have to use something else.
Nvme is just overkill, unless your doing crazy things that need fast reads/writes
Mine runs on the same SSD that everything else does, just a samsung 850 pro 1tb.
its just sitting in the draw tbh doing nothing lol
I'll bet it looks fast
nah one thing m2 nvmes dont do is look fast although gigabytes one looks nice if looks rock your boat 😛
Let me get you my address and see how quick you can ship it to me 🤣
does anyone knows if it's possible to have a Tapo C130 camera recording in some way to home assistant? the camera it's able to record 24/7 to an sdcard but I would like to have the recordings available in home assistant in some way
#cameras-archived will prob help you out. IMHO, recording in HAss is not the way to go though. View in HAss maybe. Let something else designed to record, actually record it.
thanks @undone haven I want to view in HAss and record somewhere in my disk where I have HA, not in HA itself 🙂
Country: US
Budget: Under $50
Protocol: WiFi - Local
Features: Power Monitoring
I’m looking for a plug where I can poll (or it pushes periodically) the wattage being used by some large (120v) appliances.
I have a Home Assistant Blue on the way and I’m a tad overwhelmed trying to sift through different plugs that will work with it without much fuss.
I’m just dipping my toe in to test the home automation waters. Any recommendations or warnings are appreciated.
Thank you.
Try Sonoff POW R2. 15A 3500W limit as per spec.
CloudFree plug
Anyone got the broadlink rm4 mini? is it any good
Any idea the best way to automate a touch capacitive switch for a bathroom fab/light/Bluetooth speaker into HA?
I got the pro 4 and I love it it's in my basement and works everywhere in my house
@shell hatch snap, I have one too, I actually use it for a number of things but mainly garden RF lights and a switch as well as some others 🙂
Hi all -
I am new to HA and Raspberry Pi - I followed the installation via the HA/installation/raspberrypi/ site - All is working great; however I took it just one set further and got a case for it. I got the MazerPi Raspberry Pi Case with Cooling Fan and the fan is a little loud, was curious if anyone would have a reccomendation on a different fan or case?
I got my aqara buttons today (6 button one, there quite insane) .
So the pro mostly for rf devices, i don't think i have 433Mhz devices to control
There are 2 gpio pins you can use for the fan one runs it at a slightly lower speed for a noticeable difference in noise. Thou to be fair it's now after several months practically silent on mine, maybe it just needed to bed in.
I will try that, I ordered a new case that is suppose to help with thermal greatly and has no fan. I will try swapping : This is the connection that I am using,
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51W4TqB1UXL.jpg
It would seem that there is a 5V and a 3.3V, I should try the 3.3?
Running HomeAssistant in a VM on a PC... also it's not in a central location. With HomeSeer I had used a Z-Net box to add Z-wave. Will this work with HA? Or is there a similar solution to add zwave and/or zigbee to this setup?
For #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived there are options - those channels can help
ah cool...I hadn't noticed those channels...thanks for pointing me in the right direction 🙂
Today - my zigbee / zwave antenna [usb] arrived, is there a process to add it? I found the url, thanks
So Im looking at building a loadsensor for a bed detection, google is suggesting loadcells with a HX711 and a ESP board, but I need one that outputs 5v.. I've a nodeMCU ut those seem to be 3.3v only and the other device i see mention is a 'Wemos D1 Mini' but they dont seem to be sold anymore..
not sure what options exist 😄
(Searching google gives you a million and 1 'variants'/knockoffs but god knows)
I want to get some lighting for my kitchen. White LED 4000K strip with a controller (zigbee or wifi). Is there a go to people recommend?
Google is wrong. Force sensitive resistors are what you need
Google is wrong. 🤯
Any recommendations on a 8-12 port smart surge protector that is HA compatible and will monitor power usage per port?
If I remember the min specs HA only needs 2GB min and decent CPU and 32GB storage. That'd probably be okay to start out with.
Hi. I bought one of these (https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Schneider_Electric_550D6001.html), hoping that I could somehow make it work together with ZHA. There is a YouTube video of a guy who made it work, but I can't follow the steps he's demonstrating. It's in Danish (my native language), but it should be easy enough to follow along (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCxMYnxejBk). Any chance of getting it to work? Or should I install the zigbee2mqtt add-on and integration?
#zigbee-archived can likely help guide you better
Thanks.
In the last HA podcast called - Alan Aurthur called How much beer int he fidge he mentioned and excellent Xiomi zigbee switch that does multi press and long press etc - there are no show notes to tell which one he was talking about. Anyone know?
is an excellent switch. I haven't found any equivalent which has so much action packed
and to think it was the first one from Xiaomi
I just took delivery of my 6 aqara opple switches yesterday, I love them tbh.
Anyone know where I can buy ESP32 components online in EU?
is there a known issue of ios not updating statuses in HA? batt lvl geo loc charing status etc? mine is only updating every 10 hrs unless i manually run the ha app on my phone and pull to refresh
yep. And it is not used to such an extent that I have taught morse code (using the tap actions) to kids using this 🙂 And now they communicate using this across houses when their phones are blocked 🙂
i fixed it by creating two personal automations in ios shortcuts to update the sensors data to HA
so now i can run automations when i sit at my office desk and charge my phone.
dope
hi there guys
how are you
does anyone have problems with last version of HA and xiaomi stuff?

But, I'm guessing this relates to a particular #integrations-archived - you should ask over there and provide some details, unless you're using ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, or deCONZ in which case you should ask in #zigbee-archived
Probably the best place is Mouser
What is the best app to use the heiman ZigBee hub with that has Google integration?
Or can I use with home assistant
It this one https://m.aliexpress.com/item/4000214615484.html
you cannot use it with Home Assistant
Why would you want to rely on a limited third party hub when HA has so many better options?
Hi! Can i install a Raspberry pi camera module on a Rpi4 with only home assistant installed on? Through terminal?
read the first note
then ask in either #330990055533576204 or #integrations-archived
Ok thx
Can you install Home Assistant OS directly on the eMMC of a rock pi 4?
Does anyone know the update frequency of the Aqara temperature/humidity sensors? It seems to be erratic.
It's not a fixed time, it's based on the change
Any recommendations on a 8-12 port smart surge protector that is HA compatible and will monitor power usage per port?
Interesting. I was checking the humidity during a shower. It was 44.1 when I started, then almost instantly jumped to 52.9. Cool. But then after turning off the shower, and completely getting ready for work, it jumped again to 60.2. So even though there hadn't been any "new" humidity, for lack of a better word, it didn't update until quite late when the first jump was almost instant.
In a store, is it easy to tell which devices would work with HA? I'm guessing maybe if there's a zigbee or zwave label or something.
I guess I want to know what should I buy. Devices for esphome, zwave or zigbee.
that's going to depend on what you want to do
and where you are in the world, and your budget
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Canada, low budget, I don't mind the protocol.
I got some light bulb that could have been flashed with esphome, but I think I screwed up by letting them autoupdate themselves.
Right now, I'm looking for a wall switch that I could trigger with HA so I could turn on my outdoor light when the sun is down.
I'm in Canada too and went Z-Wave which are the most expensive of the 3 big ones however you may be able to find some discounted ones at Canadian Tire as they're not selling them anymore. You can get Wifi almost anywhere and I'm not sure what Zigbee has as far as switches but it's tough to find Z-Wave or Zigbee in the brick and mortar stores since they're too niche still.
Not from what I can tell but what works in US works in Canada. For example Z-Wave uses a different frequency depending on locale, but we use the same frequency as US (908.42 Mhz)
For Zigbee devices your best bet is Ali from what I have found so far.
But I haven't looked too much into it as I only have a few Aqara sensors.
are usb sticks a good alternatives for the hubs?
yes
thanks everyone
This might not be a #hardware-archived question, but is there a more reliable way to ping whether a bulb is unavailable?
Sometimes if I turn a bulb off at the source, it takes up to 5 hours for it to become "unavailable".
Depends on the underlying technology and the associated integration
WiFi? Zigbee? Z-Wave? Bluetooth?
Its a Zigbee Tradfree G10 bulb.
And how are you integrating it with HA? Some manufacturer's hub? ZHA? Zigbee2MQTT? deCONZ?
Sorry, I'm new to all this. Thank you for your patience.
I think the integration uses ZHA.
Then head over to #zigbee-archived and explain your situation - likely you can, but really you shouldn't be cutting power to a smart bulb
So, smart switch would be the more effective solution.
By about 100%
what are some good cheap smart switches? everywhere i look im seeing 40+ im in the US.
@shell hatch When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Damned if I know, I don't live there...
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Even worse when you require a non-neutral wire installation, because then you start needing a bypass.
Ah well that settles that lol
Anyone used these dual relays modules? Can I control each one separately? I am seeing people say they cant with smartthings but im hoping maybe home assistant can https://smile.amazon.com/ENERWAVE-NEUTRAL-REQUIRED-ZWN-RSM2-PLUS-Version/dp/B07KQMGH7X
Hey guys, any recommendations for PIR sensors? I previously had some from Banggood which were pretty bulky. Looking for some which are small and barely noticing if possible.
@next sun the aqara ones are so small they are cute 😛
Haha, everyone needs a cute PIR
i'm looking at the hostname for some devices some are unique some are the same e.g i have 12 gosund smart sockets 6 identify as tasmota something and the other 6 are esp_f9a457.station I have some tuya bulbs also with that esp station hostname
i should be able to change it in the tasmota firmware at least shouldn't I?
Yes
Is anyone here using IKEA smart stuff without the IKEA gate?
@vital lark yes I am 6 blinds and the repeaters that come with it.
How do you connect to the blinds?
@vital lark i am back do you still need help
Thanks. I wonder how exactly do you connect to the blinds without the gate :)
what you using zha or zigbee2mqtt
on zha I placed the repeater in the room the blind was going in, help pin in hole until the led starts breathing the clicked discover, then once added in, I then placed blind battery end right next to the repeater held both buttons on the blind for 10 seconds until led is breathing the clicked discover again (on zigbee2mqtt same process but permit join click instead of discover).
p.s dont bother with pairing the remotes they are a pain to bind (but really the battery life is the most dreadful I have come across). all 3 died within 3 months with little use.
hey guys, just got the opportunity to buy the Intel NUC NUC7i3BNH, it has 8gb ram and 128gb storage and a Intel Core i3 processor 2.4Ghz, will this be powerfull enough for an advanced home assistant setup?
Advanced how?
I am looking forward to this reply 😛
lots of nodered automatisations and maybe in future blue iris
The 2 cores might not be enough depending on amount of video processed
tbh I am new to all this home assistant, but I would never run my cctv through it tbh
(in that I would not record to home assistant)
but depends on cameras lucasss how many we talking
if just for video
max 4 cameras
4 360p cameras and 4 4k cameras is wildly different
I have 4x 4k cameras
running from my NVR to a zotac pico pi335 (which is only a dual core celeron).
Personally I'd say you should throw in a Coral stick/board and use Frigate instead
but I am not a pro either I am only 2 months in
An i3 is fine, if supported by Coral. It'll be a trainwreck without it though
Coral stick would be the best option
Im sorry, never heard of Coral. Can u point me in the right direction?
Tinkerer would you say coral is more advanced that qnap pro nvr and face tiger?
Coral is "just" a device that speeds up object detection
It uses Tensorflow
You use it with something like Frigate that can use it to speed up processing
I only just added a couple of reolink 4k cameras to my other 4k cameras with object detection, so would not need it they do a good job of only picking up cars/truck and people separately as items. I like them better than my older hkvision tbh
although, I have the hacs addon for the motion and control of the led lights, the onvif addon to show the substreams live permantly and webRTC to pop open the 4 pages in second love lace with full size video lol...
once face tiger is configured fully on the qnap Ill just run the qnap nvr pro intergration instead.
On what machine do u have homeassistant running then? a vm? dedicated computer?
so u have dedicated machines for ur homeassistant and ur video processing?
well my has its own built in NVR, but the only time I pull up the 4k footage in home assistant (via webRTC is when i click on the live substream feed )
but I am using the reolink hacs addon to pull in the human motion to show up as motion sensor
np, I like the reolink devices now, bit of a pain to get min and max size of human detection right but once nailed the camera does the rest and the app on phone pings you notifications so no need for another automation for it.
that does sound quit convinient
how did u install hass on ur zotac tho? did u flash the boot drive? or did u use an other operation system
ubuntu boot from usb, and run from usb and then download Belena etcher
for you it will be a case of putting the 256gb in ssd or m2 drive from that machine into some kind of usb adaptor, loading balena etcher on your active pc and installing the hass over to it, its explained here it really is that easy https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/generic-x86-64
saw it! thank you!!!
Does HA still run well on Pi4? I’ve not touched anything for over a year, so need to rebuild my setup. Moved house, ready to get going.
yeah, its running fine
home assistatn amber is nothing but an raspberry pi 4 with extras
Ah ok, my two options were either Pi4 or K8s running on my iMac.
the decision is entirely up to you
If it runs good on Pi4 that’s probably the better option. Although, anyone have it running on K8s and scaling?
Some folks in #449717345808547842 have, but it's not officially supported
I think ill have play with it. I have several Pi4’s knocking about so perhaps I’ll build a k3s cluster and run it on there
Hey guys I can see there are a lot of different ESP32 versions. Which one would be ideal for sensor usage?
They nearly all have the same number of GPIO, but make sure you buy one that uses quality and appropriately rated components, like this, https://quinled.info/quinled-esp32/
they don't and there are different ESP32 chips and not all are equally supported depending on the firmware you want to use
can i assume an open/close sensor shows "open" on failure?
Hi, What file format should a USB SSD be formatted with?
To extend the eMMC Module's life I'd like to have data read/writes happen only on a USB SSD on an Odroid-N2+ (Blue) I ordered months ago but just received. I tried fat32 on a NVMe SSD (in a USB enclosure) and on a "My Passport" external SSD but fdisk -l on HA CLI does not see either. Any ideas are appreciated.
#330990055533576204 can help with that
Thanks
I'd like to hardwire sensors for every door and window in my house. Does anyone have any recommendations on which recessed sensors to use, and the best hardware to terminate them into?
I am using a smart outlet power monitoring to determine when my smart TV is on or off for automations. I am facing an issue however, that after I turn my TCL Smart TV off, it uses about 30 watts for 10 minutes, and then drops down to 0/1 watt. When TV is on it uses about 120 watts. Does anyone have any idea why it uses so much power after turning off for a short amount of time? Any settings I might be able to change?
(Please do tag me if you respond, I dont want to accidentally miss someone trying to help)
What type of TV is it? OLED, LCD, Plasma?
It's so that the tv can turn on again immediately if you change your mind.. See: https://manualzz.com/doc/51882396/tcl-4-series-tv.-standby-mode-energy-savings
Looks like there is no user setting for this time.
Thanks for finding this, looks like your Google-Fu was stronger than mine.
I'll see if I can find any other solutions now that I know the name of this "feature"
Turn off the plug
That sounds like that would cause more issues than it solves lol
That's exactly what it says in the manual.
hey @wicked furnace why hardwire things like door sensors, you only have to change the batteries once every year unless your going in and out 1000 times a day 😛
my batteries on door and window sensors are nearly 2 months old and still report 100%
Most door/window sensor batteries don't have a very fine-grained battery-level sense. The will report 100% until they report (e.g.) 70%, etc.
well in they dont report that for another 2 months I am golden 😛
Hey all, I've got a few Amazon special smart plugs all integrated through tuya and they've been working great for months. Suddenly half of them are going offline. I fire up tuya app, it shows offline and then it seems opening the app gets them to go back online for 30 minutes or so. I just swapped two to see if the problem follows the plug or the location. Any thoughts?
You can try localtuya
I just don't want to deal with so many wireless things. I personally like the idea of having as many things hardwired as possible and leaving wireless only for my mobile devices or things that cannot be wired.
That's a good philosophy
@zealous dune or could just buy a zigbee stick and add them all through zigbee2mqtt
I'm looking for a smart plug/outlet but the only ones I've found on https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations seem to be old versions that aren't made anymore or are just hard to buy. Does anyone know of a smart plug that diffidently integrates with HA? (ping in reply please)
You've got a world of Zigbee and Z-Wave options
Of course, the exact options do depend on where in the world you are
Thanks for the tip! I haven't used Zigbee or Z-Wave before and am quite new to HA in general. Can I just pick up anything thats Zigbee/Z-Wave compatible or are there some limitations?
You need supporting hardware, so you should do some research over in #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived
Generally a USB stick or the like
Thats good to know. Thank you.
and just deal with ZigBee range, devices dropping off network and changing batteries
Over two years in to my Zigbee experience, all but one of my Xiaomi sensors are on their original batteries
That implies they know which stick and sensors to buy
zigbee no issues with dropping off here either (although I am still new but I have 2 sensors in my shed which is 10 meters from house that dont drop off the network
Because I changed a lot of batteries in non Xiaomi devices
one device I came across with worse battery life than a duracell bunny
that was the ikea blind remotes lol all flat within 2 months
And wired is better than wireless. Period.
well I have the orbi mesh in my house for wifi and I have not had one experiance of drop off with the zigbee stuff (although I do have to say I do have a few repeaters around the house or devices acting as routers to help that are hard wired).
I know wifi can sometimes cause issues from what I read, but only mobiles, 3 amazon devices and 3 tablets are wireless in my house, everything else is hardwired or poe.
hello,
I am having some issues with the Sonoff SNZB-03.
Is it correct that once the sensor is triggered from motion it needs 60s of no movement at all until it is cleared and able to register no movement?
The problem right now is that when I have my Automation to set to turn off after 5 Minutes of the Motion Signal was received and retrigger that timer if another movement is detected within that timeframe but once I am longer than this time in the bath the motion sensor seems to never send another signal only after I leave the room for at least a minute
Is that the intended design of the Sonoff Motion Sensors?
#voice-assistants-archived can probably help there
Sorry about that
Eh, if you didn't scroll down you'd have missed it
True! Fixed it thanks <3
What do people recommend for smart locks? I have an existing zigbee network so was thinking of just adding on to that but hear zwave has some other benefits
Hoping to get some new eyes on this:
I'd like to hardwire sensors for every door and window in my house. Does anyone have any recommendations on which recessed sensors to use, and the best hardware to terminate them into?
I used these and have them connected to my Konnected.io alarm unit. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VSC6K2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
works great with HA.
Any issue with a lot of sensors? I imagine I'd want about 50-60 sensors.
well um, where do you live the white house? I mean that seems impossible to have that many doors/windows even in a huge house 😄
I would like to put sensors on all of my internal doors as well, including closets, walk-in pantry, etc.
I have 35 windows though
I also don't want to wire windows in series. I don't see any reason not to give myself as much information to work with as possible when there's really no downside to having them wired individually
oh wow well I'm not sure how many the konnected board in pairs can do tbh, have to look yourself.
Any suggestions how to make a device take an ip reservation (mostly tuya and google mini's)
That’s a gateway/router setting
i have the address and mac set , some do , some don't
Well, you either have the Mac wrong or the device needs to be restarted if you just reserved the ip.
Or other devices that do not have static IPs already have the reserved ip
Best to do ip reservation for your entire network
All my GMini's have a static DHCP reservation and honour it (no surprise there)
I have 5 that do
Good lord man, how many do you have if 5 are working and some aren’t 🤣
6 mini's 2 chromecasts 1 chromecast audio and a chromecast with google tv
the router does seem to be handing out dhcp addresses in order e.g the start dhcp address is 160 and everything is occupied to 170
You could also be causing issues if you are limiting the number of dhcp addresses the gateway can hand out.
i think i have around 40 for the dhcp pool
greetings! I am using a bme280 attached to a raspberry pi and the bme280 addon/integration for temp/humidity/pressure, and MOST of the time it works fine.. However, there are times when it stops working randomly, and the raspberry pi needs to be shutdown and restarted.
Is there a sensor or something that can be used to determine if HA can no longer communicate the bme280?
I have been using time between updates on the temperature, and the time can be up to 2 hours or so before it changes.
Sonoff ZIgbee USB Dongle sound good, idk how are they selling it so cheap....
Did anyone receive it yet ?
Placed order
Any1 knows a good SMART HOME DOORLOCK that works with RING doorbell but I dont have the whole ring alarm and has BIOMETRIC unlock and code pad? And works with home assistant?
so I don‘t see how a doorbell should interact or be compatible with a lock… but HA can tie together whatever you want so anybody who rings can get the door unlocked if you really want that
In the ring app when you watch the doorbell you can have a button to unlock the door :p , but only supports some smart locks
so the goal is to get rid of the ring app and control/watch everything from ha
Does anyone have any experience with using an LG WebOS tv via the homekit controller interface? Is that the best way to interact with a WebOS tv?
no, i tried homekit controller with my cx and it constantly loses connection and/or you are unable to control things like volume etc
use the webos integration to tie it in HA
Copy
then use the native homekit to integrate your tv to the home app
No the goal is to use the ring app to open the door, but also to be able to open the door via home assistant, when watching the door lock via the ring app there is an option to straight unlock the door
will a m.2 Google Coral work in a USB-m.2 to USB-C case or a USB-pci 2 Tunderbolt case?
no, the goal is to have everything in HA so you can go buy whatever lock you want and get rid of the ring app
Ow, if you see it like that, that would also be nice that home assistant auto pulls the feed and displays it within home assistant and that I then open the lock within home assistant, however I do not think that is possible to get the feed from ring with 2 way audio, I think you need the ring app for that
I do have ring integrated within home assistant and have authomations that trigger when there is some1 , however I do not think it is possible to get the live feed With audio 2 way
you are right, 2way audio is yet to come with ha.
and i do not have ring.
I have everything custom and it works beautiful with ha/homekit… including 2way audio..
the question I had regarding the bme280 addon/integration, should I post that in a different channel, and if so, which one? it is a supported component.
is it a integration problem or a addon problem?
@gentle fossil Is there a way to trigger a scene based on if the TV is playing or not? Seems like the only states for the media player are on and off
@gentle fossil , I don't know. it occasionally stops taking measurements from the bme280, and I don't find any information in the logs regarding any error.
you might only get the active source (hdmiX, amazon prime, netflix) as currently playing, more on that in #integrations-archived
Ah, I am hoping to find a way to call a scene based on if the tv is playing or not. Seems like this was changed to on/off to fix broken behavour
I've built this really ugly kluge to control a garage door through ha using an rpi, and it doesn't work! it does when connected to my bench power supply, but not when connected to the one I intend to use permanently. If there's a kind sympathetic soul that can help a neophyte with what's probably a simple problem, I'd be really grateful. (This is not strictly a HA problem: more like a kindergarten level dc electronics problem, but maybe one of you will be kind to a person who is interested in HA but way out of his depth.)
Using zigbee devices (aqara + conbee II) I'm having great results with a decent amount of sensors - door, temperature, motion, water leak , garage door opener..
anyone heard of these tzumi brand lights sold at walmart? i got one for 10 bucks, it's like an rgb light bar but it's super small.
it supports IR, so i might try capturing the code with my broadlink adapter. but, it also has app support and broadcasts over bluetooth as; elk-bledom, anything i can do with this via BT?
How many is decent amount?
Is a Raspi with 2Gb Sufficient for a Secondary Home Assistant Install (just one integration)
sounds like overkill 🙂
Well I have a Raspberry Pi 1.2 laying around. But I was thinking Raspi 3 was minimum these days
1.2? but indeed, seems 3 is minumum
Yeah
Available Quantity: 0, Lead Time: 40 Weeks. ... yeah forgot about the shortage
If I have Zigbee CC2652P Coordinator v4 stick for my rp3 do I need Ikea getaway to use their smart lights ?
the coordinator will replace the gateway
Yeh that's what I wanted to hear thanks !
So I just go and buy their smart products and they work straight for the home assistant with the zigbee stick ?
if they're supported by your integration
but you won't use a tradfri gateway
what you're likely to use is zha or zigbee2mqtt
that is irrelevant since my preference is different from yours
both are free so you can try them
Is the new 10th gen NUC i7 supported for the NUC version of home assistant os
better ask in #330990055533576204
Ok thanks will do
Ok thanks !
Do you think a Model 3 A+, would be enough for a headless home assistant server, all it will do is take MQTT commands and update Modbus Devices: https://core-electronics.com.au/raspberry-pi-3-model-a-plus.html
No addons, nothing else but 512mb ram, makes me think it could be tight even if its headless.
Well that's not promising: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/switch-raspberry-pi-model/123518

Looking to monitor/track energy usage for at least one outlet. Any suggestions on what smart replacement outlets can do this for me? (not plug-in type)
@vernal heart if you can find any of the Schneider electric ones, these report this all have not tired any others
I have a Tuya-based WiFi bulb that supports color_temp and hs modes. It has RGB picker and color_temp slider (supported features = 19); both work as they should. For some reason, however, the bulb stays in hs mode even when it should be operating in color_temp after changing the color temperature. Other bulbs change appropriately but this one is not cooperating, and it is messing up an automation that I’m trying to put together. My Google-fu powers are helping me here. Any suggestions or some direction on what to Google?
@silent viper Do you have another one of the same bulb that's working properly?
I'm relatively new to Zigbee, ive picked up a 4 button remote as follows: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003170176476.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.22c665363xhA7j&algo_pvid=c2d276d4-3dd1-4b08-be9c-0600660459a2&algo_exp_id=c2d276d4-3dd1-4b08-be9c-0600660459a2-15&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000024473761891"} its listed as TS0044 reading as _TZ3000_abci1hiu and it paired without issue however none of the buttons trigger or show as being toggled on / off in Home Assistant, running on an Rpi 4. HAs anyone else had much luck with these, basically looking for a remote to switch between 4 scenes! It may be a quirk job?
@brisk lotus I primarily have Teckin and saudio bulbs. I recently swapped out a bunch of bulbs with Singled zigbee bulbs. I just looked at all my bulbs in use: several saudio and ONE Teckin (which is the one giving problems). I'll get one of the replaced bulbs back out and see what it does. (I assumed I still had several Teckin bulbs running. Didn't realize I had primarily saudio bulbs now...)
@silent viper If you don't have another one of the same Teckin bulbs, it's a little bit harder to narrow down what the issue is with it. Maybe just swap it out all together.
Also, with the Sengled bulbs, keep in mind that they're only endpoint devices and not routers.
I have more of the Teckin bulbs; they're just out-of-service right now. Think I have about a dozen sitting on the shelf.
I remember reading about the Sengled bulbs not being endpoints. They wrote something in their FAQ as to why they were designed that way. Something about if the switch gets turned off, the mesh isn't affected. I have a couple Zigbee plugs strategically located and I don't even have anything plugged into them.
Does anyone here have any experience working with blinds motors? I'm trying to set up a wall mounted one (zemismart) up as a test, but getting the continuous loop cord cleanly routed down to the motor has proven to be a pain. The shades are inset into the window frame, and there's not enough room to mount the motor on the inside of the frame, so I have to mount it to the front. Here's a picture of what I've got right now. It's just some 3D printed parts to try and guide the cord, but the motor struggles with it routed like this. https://i.imgur.com/mq0Rt4M.jpg
anyone using Withings smart bathroom scales? Just got a question before I buy thanks
does it make fat jokes?
if you enable iOS notifications sure
Not even seeing anything on their website in that brand. They only have monitoring for the service entrance.
Do a lot of smart outlets report on energy usage? I thought they were all just turn on/off type of thing
What shelly or sonoff device would u recommend that can handle 220, 30+ amps?
you don‘t do that with traditional consumer hardware
you need a heavy load relay and use the shelly to trigger that
I see
Or is there like a smart clamp metter?
I want to try smartify a tumbledryer but it is electric and Proly uses more than 16 amps
yeah a current transformer clamp is definitely the way to go for something like that
consider if you have a way to get data from your utility that you can detect a load that large with the whole home reading
Hi, I have the heim vision hm241 4 camera with NVR setup and working. also added to my local network.
I am trying to get it into home assistant, but not having much luck. I am still very new to this, but I have done quite a bit so far.
I have found this https://community.home-assistant.io/t/heimvision-cameras/257460 while searching google, but not getting it to work.
It is giving me a configuration error. Saying it needs a type
Can anyone help??
Here is what I have in the editor.
camera:
- platform: generic
name: cam1
still_image_url: http://192.168.88.47:80/cgi-bin/snapshot.cgi?chn=0&u=admin&p=
You don’t need the :80
I've tried multiple ways, but don't remember if I tried that.
Let me try real quick.
And the type is prob because your yaml is not correct although let me look at the generic camera docs
