Hey, my RPi4 is in an aluminium heat sink case and on a cooling mat but is still getting super hot now the weather is warm in the UK. Any idea why this might be? I’m considering a case with a fan, but from what I see online a heatsink case should be enough?

Define "super hot"

A quick Google says that the Pi4 is good for up to 85C before it throttles

I’m in US. I want to buy one outside camera for apartment and want to spend $50 or under. Curious if there’s a page somewhere that maintains recommendations for HA hardware?

There isn't, probably because it'd be a nightmare to manage, but the #cameras-archived channel history should have a bunch of recommendations. I know that HikVision and Dahua come up regularly, but there's other brands too

Hi, I am using a Sonoff Zigbee CC2531 USB dongle which is connected to my dell server hosted in the attic. Looking for an in wall scene controller that:

  1. fits a US decora outlet slot (it has to go in gang with a bunch of other stuff)
  2. at least 4 buttons, preferably 6 or more
  3. isn't a smart switch that controls loads in and of itself (the box is too full and there simply isn't room for the thing to take up space for a relay and wire terminals beyond powering itself)

Even something battery powered that clips into a decora slot is fine

I hope this is the right place to ask... I need to replace my router and I'm looking at the Ubiquiti AmpliFi mesh system. I want to use it for additional presence detection in HA, but I only see the Unifi device listed. Anyone have any experience with the AmpliFi for this AND sensor/switch support only on 2.4Ghz bands?

slim lagoon
#

Amplifi can't be used with the Unifi integration. Only Unifi products in the Edge or Unifi lines can be used.

gusty drift
#

Gotcha. I'll look at those, then. I only looked at the AmpliFi because it was available at SometimesBest Buy.

slim lagoon
#

Yeah... As a general rule, the ONLY time I'd buy networking equipment at Best Buy is if ALL my switches go down and I desperately need one like NOW! lol

#

But... take a look at TP-Link's Omada line as well. Many of the same features as Unifi without the astronomical cost. You can buy most of their gear on Amazon.

gusty drift
#

Thanks! I'll take a look at those. Do you know if there are any issues with device connectivity? I ask because on my Orbi system I have now, I had to break apart the 2.4 & 5Ghz bands in order to get most of my sensors to connect and for some inane reason, I hate having to have two separate SSIDs.

slim lagoon
#

I'm running Omada as my main right now and I don't have any issues... But, I do have separate VLANs with separate SSIDs.

gusty drift
#

I'm ok with a separate SSID for vlan purposes. I just had issue with having different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5Ghz for things that I DO want connected to the internet.

slim lagoon
#

I've not had any issues with my combined 2.4ghz/5ghz SSID. To be fair, Orbi is kinda trash.

gusty drift
#

Yeah, these are only about a year old, and already failing on a weekly basis, forcing reboots of the entire mesh. Combine that with only getting about half of my subscribed internet speeds (typically around 500Mb/s) when I have a 1Gig plan. Also, the reboots wreak havoc in my case due to the number of DIY devices I have. So, I'm looking for reliability and functionality in one system, now.

winged knoll
#

That ☝️ - where in the world matters

clever yew
#

As Tinkerer said local laws will matter for that. For something as critical as that I would sugest something that works fully without integration into something like HA (I love HA but i'm not relying on it for something that critical). Given that condition you probably get stuck with propriatory protocol (or some modified & inaccessable variant of a standard protocol). I use Bosch smoke alarms which will set eachother off but you need the Bosch hub. The reaon I chose Bosch is they have an api which exposes all events (and needs no cloud to work) so you get the best of both worlds. A fully standalone system for critical stuff designed for that purpose but also exposes all data if you want it. When I came to do the integration I found someone else beat me to it so I just use the already written one. Fire Angel would be my No 1 choise but they have no integration to other systems and evne thier own app needs cloud to work.

winged knoll
#

Makes notes on Bosch

#

The law here already requires interlinked alarms for new installs, but as of next year it applies to existing properties too as well as adding additional detectors required beyond the current baseline.

#

I've been looking for something I could easily integrate in HA. FireAngel is do-able, but would require monitoring the interlink wire with some DIY magic

#

Damn, no heat sensor option, well, that's Bosch out then wail

clever yew
winged knoll
#

I don't know if England is/has/will be introducing similar standards

clever yew
#

Would not be supprised if we followed.

winged knoll
#

We'll be adding a couple of fire sensors, one heat sensor, and another carbon monoxide detector - just to bring it up to the new baseline. I'll probably go for a few more smoke detectors on top - be daft not to

clever yew
#

A friends house burnt down 2 years back. If he had had interlinked alarms he would have got to it a lot sooner and would have been a minor garage fire.

#

If he had used AFDD's instead of the normal RCBO's on his electtic supply there would not have even been a fire just a popped breaker.

Made me really think about better fire alarms!

Just asking for people opinon what they think is the best smart bulb to get. I was thinking Phillps Hue but I realise that's because of how little I actually know of smart bulbs out there.

My requirements is, need to be high quality in that no subtle flicker (the ones I picked before had it and while not noticeable seem to cause everyone but the kiddo headaches), has colour control, obviously HA support them. Price is a consideration but not much as making sure it it doesn't cause everyone headaches.

To be honest, I've found my Gledopto (Zigbee) Pro controller to be awesome, but the quality of the light itself then depends on the strip you attach. I'd expect (but haven't tested) that their Pro bulbs are also good

What are people using for outside lights?

Is there a good zigbee or (shudders) wifi spotlight with motion sensing?

Basically I have two outside spotlight type lights on separate switches. I could just put in some shelly's to control them based on time and have them on from dusk till bed, but i'd prefer a motion sensor so they are only on when we are out back. the motion sensors I use (aqara) are really indoor not heavy duty so they are out, plus its another thing to set up and install outside.

So i'm probably looking for a light with a built in motion sensor and the question is do I get a dumb one that I just throw a shelly in the switches or do I go smart (then of course the switches themselves become a problem)

Anyways just curious what others are using for outside, backyard lighting and controls

Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [W]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [V]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [A]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [kWh]

As of right now since the washing machine is running and I was expecting the values to change which reflects that the appliance is getting electricity, but nothing is happening. The last time the values updated was yesterday. Is there a setting in the configuration of the ZWave JS that I am missing?

Hello. I want to read data from Ph meter Ph-4502C by connecting it to the Sonoff Basic (tasmota integration). I first tried to connect "Po" pin on pH meter (Analog output) to the Sonoff Basic "Rx" pin. It figured out that "Po" pin should be connected to "ADC" pin which lacks in sonoff. So next we tried to connect "Do" pin on pH meter to Sonoff Basic "Rx" pin. When I configure Sonoff Basic module I don't know which readout to choose. I open Tasmota tab, go to "Configuration">"Configure module">Click next to GPIOO3 (which corresponds to "Rx" pin) and then I don't know what to choose. Hey, anyone know which would be the best smart remote/IR blaster to use? I already have a harmony hub from my pre home assistant days, so I was hoping that would work well, but I’m not finding much flexibility for how it integrates. Any other more preferable options that anyone else has used?

slim lagoon
mossy cosmos
#

Well, I guess I might not be finding this with Harmony yet, but I'm looking for a way of customizing how much the two units converge with HA. For example, I want to be able to press a button on the remote to trigger something directly in HA rather than through the Harmony Hub Activity. Or the flip side of I would want to send custom IR signals from HA without a certain activity.

#

I don't really like Harmony Hubs interface or means of managing controls and devices with activities and would hope to be able to exchange that for Home Assistant to handle those controls for any of the devices.

#

And again, maybe I'm missing something in HA, but I haven't found out if you can map custom commands directly to HA from the remote or likewise if you can send IR signals to devices through the IR blaster directly from HA both without needing to create any activities within Harmony Hub. At most just add the devices to interface with and let HA take over from there

You can do this with the remote.send_command service and specifying the device. You don't need an activity setup at all to do that. As for the remote, yeah, Harmony locked it down so you really can't do a lot with it it terms of customizations to 3rd party services. For me, I actually use node-red for all 3 of my Harmony Hubs. I expose switches into HA and can control nearly anything that way.

You're going to want a better switch and/or router. The problem with consumer hardware is almost always the switching that's done. For 50+ devices/clients, your ISP modem/router will croak.

It has to go through the modem eventually though,
modem -> switch -> access point vs modem -> access point. Nothing else would be hooked to the switch except maybe rasp pi but modem has 4 outputs

# mossy cosmos Hey, curious question, what about UniFi puts it at the bottom of the list for yo...

A few of reasons... First being their lack of attention to security and the horrible way it was handled after their latest breach. Second, there are features that I want/need they still have refused to implement. Case in point, a simple way to configure/manage igmp_proxy support (which is needed for proper mDNS routing between VLANs). Third, their stance on deprecating products (like the US-UAP-PRO which has literally been out for less than 3 years). It might be nitpicky, but I paid close to $300 for my APs less than 2 years ago and I'll have to replace them in less than a year.

hope to find the discussion channel that can help me with answers to that question πŸ˜‰

slim lagoon
#

What are your questions?

jade agate
#

is there some 'advised' hardware setup, considering processor, memory etc etc, to be able to use HA without a hiccup, but also add other things like camera streams... dedicated camera server, or use HA, want to do a 1 time upgrade now, so dont mind spending a bit more if I can do it right now. (think +3000 entities, average Processor usage now 14%, without camera;s just yet)

winged knoll
#

It really comes down to all those "other" things

#

Streaming a camera is one thing. Motion/object detection is a whole 'nother game

jade agate
#

reading about Plex server, whihc is now on my NAs (shutting down at night), MariaDB, Grafana and Influx. guess that would be it for now

#

object detection would be very nice indeed....

winged knoll
#

Plex with transcoding is CPU intensive. Without it runs fine on a Pi3

#

So, you're likely looking at a minimum of an i5 with a Coral board (m.2 connector)

#

More is good though, particularly if you're looking at Plex

jade agate
#

you mean stand alone, or in the HA OS

winged knoll
#

Either way

jade agate
#

ah ok

winged knoll
#

Transoding video is hard work

jade agate
#

yes, its too hard for my current NAS....

#

so better do it right in one shot now

#

of course, I dont want to waste energy either.... so it must be aseconomic as possible

winged knoll
#

Well, there's two things there:

  1. A modern CPU will idle at low power
  2. High performance CPUs will spend less time in high power modes, and may actually draw less power over time than a low performance CPU that's very busy
#

I have a Xeon that idles with less power draw than the hard disks in the system...

jade agate
#

a, yes, thats smart indeed.

Hi, I have a bluetooth device on my computer that appears to be operating and I have it shared through my VirtualBox USB to communicate to Home Assistant, however when I do a scan on terminal it states there's no default bluetooth device available. @gentle mauve The Bluetooth device is a Realtek dongle. I'm trying to get my miflora to work with them so those are my entities. I tried to test the Bluetooth through the terminal but it doesn't detect the Bluetooth so I suspect that's the problem.

#

Does your virtual machine have the capacity to do Bluetooth or whatever I'm super new to this whole home assistant thing so I'm just taking guesses at your issue with my limited experience with virtualbox. And always having a lot of problems with virtualbox and connectivity and pass through of various devices

kind kiln
#

Yea I believe so. When I disable bluetooth on the USB devices, it won't even spool up bluetooth on the guest machine. So when its enabled it just says down, so that's progress. I know the USB devices can be touch and go, I'm using USB for my Zwave and X10 and they work 95% of the time. vs 100% back when I had HA on a pi.

languid fulcrum
#

So, is the best solution if running a PI to ditch the SD card and move to an external HD?

#

I’ve seen a few posts stating they are β€œcrapping out” on the microSD and I just haven’t seen issue with it.

gloomy spoke
#

Generally, yes. It’ll be much faster and more reliable. You can choose whether to continue to boot from the card and use the SSD for the data, or to boot directly from the SSD

torn spoke
#

#

I'm thinking about moving from HAOS on a pi4 to supervised on a VM.

Could I relegate the existing pi to be just the controller for zwave and zigbee?

winged knoll
#

Yeah, just say blobcsignno

torn spoke
#

uh-oh lol

winged knoll
#

Don't touch Supervised

#

Seriously, if you're going with a VM, use HAOS or Container

#

Supervised is what happens when you take HAOS, remove the OS part, and let you manage it - with very fixed constraints on it

#

Very few people manage that correctly, and as a result pain follows

torn spoke
#

gotcha

winged knoll
#

And yes, you can continue using the Pi for Zigbee and Z-Wave

torn spoke
#

do you think that would be more reliable or is passing through a stick in USB typically fine

winged knoll
#

Generally it's fine, but I run mine separate for other reasons and I have no issues

torn spoke
#

Are the other reasons maybe valuable to me and I just don't know what i don't know or are they pretty edge case specific to what you're doing?

winged knoll
#

Well, it's one of those all eggs in one basket things

#

some people like that, some of us don't

torn spoke
#

Yeah that makes sense

winged knoll
#

I like a bit of decoupling, since I can upgrade things as I want, or not, and roll things back etc

#

Then again, I've worked in IT for a long time, I have a perspective that's shaped by that history

torn spoke
#

That's kind of why I want to move to a VM, probably split the difference between where I'm at now, and as robust as your implementation. I'm okay if everything is in one basket, but I also would like to gain a VM snapshot parachute.

Good afternoon, all. First things first: complete noob regarding HA, and virtually no Linux programming experience.

Any of you that are still reading, πŸ˜‰ after a less than stellar experience with Smartthings I've decided to go with an open source alternative, namely HA.

Now, after a ton of searching over the past week I find myself at the same point: which hardware to use? Sadly, it seems HA Blue isn't for sale at any price now, so I'd like to set it up on either a mini fanless pc or old laptop - something that's not going to take up a lot of shelf room next to our gateway. A monitor isn't an issue since I can remotely access it very easily via a laptop, phone or tablet. Since they're not going to be used for other activities (for now at least), I have no problems installing HA as a standalone os (if that's even possible on a windows pc).

My problems begin with the getting started section on the .io page where it states if I don't have something or another already installed then I should look to either a pi or odroid install first. The thing is, once I have things set up I don't want to have to concern myself with migrating everything over to another machine. From what I've read, pis & droids aren't meant to be used as an always on device, so it'd be even worse to start over from scratch.

In summary, what I'd like is some type of direction as far as minimum pc requirements (cpu speed, ram etc.), and what the difficulty rating would be to go straight to a pc installation (easier than breathing to fuggeddaboutit). Any and all comments or suggestions are very much welcome (even going as far as saying this may not be the right setup for me - I'd much rather know now than after committing days of work & what little is left of my hair to). Finally, apologies for rambling on like I did...post-middle-aged men do that from time to time. 😁

# mighty glen Good afternoon, all. First things first: complete noob regarding HA, and virtua...

If you aren't sure HA is for you I would go with a VM in your current PC just to see what it's like and see whether you actually want to buy dedicated hardware for it. Rather than bying stuff upfront before being sure about it. If you do have an old laptop or mini PC that you don't use then even better can already use that. Either with a VM or by flashing the OS image directly to that hardware. Requirements depend on your usage of course but anything of the last decade would do (perhaps older). Preferably you want something with Intel i3 and not those older intel atom/duo processors. You anyway don't need a screen since HA is a headless system so no problem there. Regarding RPis yes people on the one hand say to start with those when you are just starting up but yes also they are not very good at long term solutions os if you do have alteratives it is best to avoid them.

# languid fulcrum There’s a lot of folks saying don’t go pi?

All I can say is I've been running HA since shortly after it was public. I have a complex setup - I've always run it on a Pi. People hate on the PI and that's OK. My point is that if you don't have lots of Linux skills the large documentation/yt/etc behind the PI will help you out the most. You can pick up a pi3 off ebay cheap and get on with your life. Upgrading is just swapping the SD to a faster PI.

I'm not sure if it exists a perfect sensor. Seems like it's very hot and miss on eBay sensors. Bet it's all sensors that didn't get through their qa for retail sale

There's never been a perfect sensor... at least not that I've ever seen. 😦

So is wink also just zigbee? If I see something that says it works with wink can I use it in HA as a zigbee device?

valid spindle

looking at the website a few of their devices were z-wave; the hub also supported a bunch of stuff, including z-wave, zigbee and bluetooth-LE.

eager rivet

oh nice

valid spindle

well, not nice in the sense that you'd need to check every device closely as to which technology it actually uses

it would be so great if something would just win lol like laser disc vs dvd

like they could all still make money and agree on a data standard

the big money is in getting that sweet sweet licensing money; so it's always going to be a deathmatch

Might want to look into a Bond then... that's about the only other thing I can think of. You might be able to find some of the HB controllers on eBay or something.

eager rivet
#

Yeah I was checking bond out, doesn't look like it supports changing fan direction, plenty of switches if I don't need that

#

but for one fan you need a 10+ foot ladder so I need remote reverse

#

maybe I can write an integration the wifi controller

slim lagoon
#

IIRC, the bond will support any function that the remote does for that fan.

eager rivet
#

if traffic isn't encrypted shouldn't be hard

slim lagoon

True

eager rivet
#

yeah the bond remote I was looking at doesn't support reverse but maybe they make others

Can anyone assist please as this is driving me nuts. I have a SSD drive which I am trying to get to work as the main boot drive for HA. I have updated the Pi / Firmware and EEPROM to the latest release. I have installed HA using BalenaEtcher onto the SSD.

However when I boot, I get a plethora of errors. Boot order has obviously been changed from SD to USB.

I am using a Pi4 and only tried the USB3 port. Will try USB2

novel sphinx
#

I am 100% sure you problems are down to your USB3 adapter

#

There are poorly documented but known issues. Basically most vendors don’t implement the spec correctly.

gloomy spoke
#

further, powering an SSD from your Pi is generally discouraged

novel sphinx
#

Pi4 will try and use the new mass storage driver…but it won’t work well and keeps resetting the USB stack

I prefer not to think of a Pi as a power supply πŸ™‚

#

in part because even normal, well-speced power supplies don't have deliver what they advertise, and undervoltage warnings are the first sign. Even a USB Bluetooth adapter caused problems for me

novel sphinx
#

YMMV especially if you aren’t aware of the issues. Debugging power issues isn’t easy if you are running headless either.

I’ve currently got 3 usb radios and an SSD hanging out of my pi4 but I’ve been super careful.
When I ran a Pi2 I had to build a powered USB hub so things have at least improved.

Bingo, plugging it into the USB2 port I am up and rubbing. So presuming it is the adaptor that is faulty. Although I ordered one which was recommended on another forum, it looks like I may have got a β€œfake” with the JMicron chipset. This is what I ordered ELUTENG USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter Cable with Type C Adapter for 2.5" HDD or SSD 5Gbps High Speed Plug and Play Support UASP SATA I II III Hard Disk Drive USB S-ATA Converter https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XCV1W97/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1G6AK71V32PBCFYGA0YV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Question for the Class:
How much power does HA really need? I am moving to a Tiny home and trying to downsize servers etc.
Was thinking of Pi 4 w/ 8gb
and docker for multiple "servers"
Plex, HA, LDAP, etc

Pi4 will be fine for HA, at least on an SSD

For Plex too... well, Plex + Pi == 🐒
