https://github.com/DubhAd/Home-AssistantConfig/blob/live/hardware.md is my list of current, and historical, hardware (probably anyway - some things may be missing)
gold!

damnit. US resident here
I guessed, from the boomer reference π
The Zigbee stuff will mostly be available
Lots of people have lists like that. Some of the best are found here https://www.home-assistant.io/examples/#example-configurationyaml
thanks! also gold!
<#hardware-archived message> π
well, i want z-wave hardware due to easy connectivity - so i need a list of hardware instead of configuration cookbooks
i'll go through yours, tinkerer and see if any z-wave stuff is available in my reigon
thanks for all your help!
Zigbee is also, with a tiny bit of research, easy connectivity
Iβm looking for a smart outlet that will allow me to run automations based on the amount of power being pulled thru it. US market, prefer wifi (but hub is fine), price doesnβt really matter (just looking for anything thatβll do what I want), would prefer IFTTT integration (but again, other solutions are fine)
IFTTT integration π€
Prefer IFTTT? That's like preferring being tortured
I'd like a service that may delay things for a few hours
Hey, my RPi4 is in an aluminium heat sink case and on a cooling mat but is still getting super hot now the weather is warm in the UK. Any idea why this might be? Iβm considering a case with a fan, but from what I see online a heatsink case should be enough?
Define "super hot"
A quick Google says that the Pi4 is good for up to 85C before it throttles
Obviously a heatsink works best with some airflow though
hi, i'm a bit lost.
I understand how to use the app ... sort of, but I dont know how to connect lets say for example a regular ( not smart ) lamp to my application ?
i have seen lots of methods using rely and nodemcu ... that is the best or ideal way of doing so ?
is there is a better way for doing that ?
am i in the right room ?
many ways to skin that cat
depends on how handy you are, where you are in the world, and how much you're willing to spend
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
@foggy pecan hey, thanks for reply, i thought no one is there
Which country you're in >>> dubai
- What your budget is >>> lowest for my home and premium for a new city
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave) >>>> whatever is less hackable
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc) >>> just a basic on and off would do it for now, we can add more using the software, right ?
i saw this video, I think the modified board looks fine but it uses wifi and another software ( not free and looks terrible compared to home assistant "sinric pro" ) ... that is all i know about this cat π
ah ok, i don't know what's available in your region. Z-wave and zigbee are not able to connect to the internet so in that regard they could be said to be more secure
wifi is generally easy to configure
DIY is its own thing though
hmmm .. is there is a certain board that is being used for this purpose that is well known and secure ?
i found some youtube videos with pcb and tutorial on how to use it.
pcb provides 8 connections with 1 wifi connection
that means 1 board can holds up to 8 switches/ devices with a single 1 wigi connection.
still dont know how to connect a board to a wifi for example.
how i can enter a username and password for the wifi ( for the board ) ?
If you just want something off the shelf for a table lamp a smart plug of some description will do. Dubai appears to use the UK "Type G" socket so there should be plenty available. e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sonoff-Socket-Switch-Wireless-Remote/dp/B07PM42XVK/
Iβm in US. I want to buy one outside camera for apartment and want to spend $50 or under. Curious if thereβs a page somewhere that maintains recommendations for HA hardware?
There isn't, probably because it'd be a nightmare to manage, but the #cameras-archived channel history should have a bunch of recommendations. I know that HikVision and Dahua come up regularly, but there's other brands too
'Intel NUC Kit NUC6I5SYH would this be good for docker run Hass and pihole, etc?
Intel Core i5-6260U
Reasonable spec, with enough RAM (4GB and above) it should be fine for anything that's not CPU intensive - like Frigate, Doods, etc
Can get it with 8 gb of ram
can it run one or two camera streams?
could it run hass, pi hole and media server(with photos and files mainly). Where the media server is from an external hdd?
Well, whether it could do the media server part depends on your install method.
Running streams is easy, decoding them for object/motion detection isn't
mhm fair, just showing a live feed is easy?
will probably run motion detection with door and window sensors and stuff
And im gonna debate about the price for the nuc. What would be fair?
Depends on where you are in the world, and what 5 to 6 year old hardware normally goes for
NL
a lot of hardware in this country xD
the kit originally went for 400, without ram and ssd
the cpu is 6 years old so idk for that price decrease
Hi, I am using a Sonoff Zigbee CC2531 USB dongle which is connected to my dell server hosted in the attic. I have no problem connecting to it inside the house. but if i install a door sensor in the garden or install a Sonoff Temperature sensor to the outside wall, it can't detect it. Whats the best solution to increase the signal strength?
This is a #zigbee-archived question, but you need to add repeaters (mains-powered devices such as plugs and switches) to your mesh.
And throw the dongle out, it's junk
don't throw it out, you can use it as a repeater
lol, what should I use then? I have a lidl gateway device but I cant connect to it using zha
Sure you can, you can root it and flash firmware on it
why not?
do you recommend any? I am new to this game so no idea what i am looking for
See the many links in https://github.com/Koenkk/zigbee-herdsman/issues/319#issuecomment-789757269 for that
Where you are in the world is ever so slightly important...
I can recommend you some UK plugs
I am in the UK
@dusk panther When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
Then the Salus plugs are pretty solid, as are the Ikea ones
The Ikea repeaters aren't terrible, mostly
mostly being subjective π
They're better than a CC2531 with router firmware
Ha! Fair.
Not as good as one of those with an antenna though
Innr SP222 is better than the Salus plugs, since it's Zigbee 3.0
@dusk panther Jump over to #zigbee-archived and read the pins on that channel. Also, check out https://zigbee.blakadder.com for devices.
I have seen the paul banks link but its not n00b proof.
Nothing is "n00b" proof when it comes to home automation.
not only home automation π
As soon as you invent something that's fool proof, someone will come along and invent a better fool.
Hi
I'm not sure if I'm right in this room, just point me elsewhere if not ^^'
I'm looking for either a motor for roller blinds, or some decent, not toooo expensive already put together blinds.
Already got the blinds themselves so more looking for a motor
Ikea ones with the ball chain.
Mainly looking for something with wifi and no battery that works well with HA. Any experiences?
Zemismart makes WiFi roller blind motors that aren't too expensive. They're Tuya based, so you can use local_tuya (I think) to integrate them.
Hmmm
Looks promising enough
And yes, reasonable price
Looking for an in wall scene controller that:
- fits a US decora outlet slot (it has to go in gang with a bunch of other stuff)
- at least 4 buttons, preferably 6 or more
- isn't a smart switch that controls loads in and of itself (the box is too full and there simply isn't room for the thing to take up space for a relay and wire terminals beyond powering itself)
Even something battery powered that clips into a decora slot is fine
Zigbee, zwave, wifi are all available
thought I had it in the TopGreener TGWFSC8 but apparently I didn't look closely enough and it's actually a HUGE CHUNGUS with onboard load switching
For no load you'd need to get a zigbee remote
Figured. Something like https://www.amazon.com/Zigbee-Remote-Dimmer-RGBgenie-ZB-5122/dp/B07V59Q4X5/ except with a less lighting-centric button layout would be ideal
Most of them are lighting centric
There's some 86x86 ones with 4-6 keys with multiple functions
I hope this is the right place to ask... I need to replace my router and I'm looking at the Ubiquiti AmpliFi mesh system. I want to use it for additional presence detection in HA, but I only see the Unifi device listed. Anyone have any experience with the AmpliFi for this AND sensor/switch support only on 2.4Ghz bands?
Amplifi can't be used with the Unifi integration. Only Unifi products in the Edge or Unifi lines can be used.
Gotcha. I'll look at those, then. I only looked at the AmpliFi because it was available at SometimesBest Buy.
Yeah... As a general rule, the ONLY time I'd buy networking equipment at Best Buy is if ALL my switches go down and I desperately need one like NOW! lol
But... take a look at TP-Link's Omada line as well. Many of the same features as Unifi without the astronomical cost. You can buy most of their gear on Amazon.
Thanks! I'll take a look at those. Do you know if there are any issues with device connectivity? I ask because on my Orbi system I have now, I had to break apart the 2.4 & 5Ghz bands in order to get most of my sensors to connect and for some inane reason, I hate having to have two separate SSIDs.
I'm running Omada as my main right now and I don't have any issues... But, I do have separate VLANs with separate SSIDs.
I'm ok with a separate SSID for vlan purposes. I just had issue with having different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5Ghz for things that I DO want connected to the internet.
I've not had any issues with my combined 2.4ghz/5ghz SSID. To be fair, Orbi is kinda trash.
Yeah, these are only about a year old, and already failing on a weekly basis, forcing reboots of the entire mesh. Combine that with only getting about half of my subscribed internet speeds (typically around 500Mb/s) when I have a 1Gig plan. Also, the reboots wreak havoc in my case due to the number of DIY devices I have. So, I'm looking for reliability and functionality in one system, now.
Can anyone recommend a good 1080p outdoor camera? Wanna use it as a faux window in my windowless office
I have 2 Arlo Pro 4 cameras that I use and really like. But, they require cloud access if you want to integrate them into HA.
I'd prefer to keep it local, but if I can't find anything else, I'll look into this more
They do 2k, and even have color at night. And, yeah, they are one of the last few things I still have in the cloud (along with my door locks, which I'm going to replace soon).
I have POE Reolink 410s/520s as my indoor/outdoor cameras. Middle of the road cameras you can get for around $50 each.
But that's crazy, a wifi connection for every single device/ lamp
That's not good at all
I was thinking of one board for every space and connect all the boards with one system ( HomeAssistant)
But having a wifi connection for every single device/ switch is insane
Iam interested in any bard (PCB) of 8-10 relays to add in every space in the house
Any suggestions for a good PCB that could do that?
Insane because?
Crowding the wifi connection
Looking into it, thanks!
I also found the Amcrest IP5M-B1186EW-28MM which is looking pretty good
Only if you have your Internet provider issued router
It doesn't matter, 5ghz doesn't pass through walls easily
I just want 5 extra wifi connections that controls the whole house
20 would be insane and limits my ability to expand
I must be insane then π
You're going to have to diy a lor, there are a couple ready made 8 relay wifi boards
@slim lagoon Does the 520 need to be mounted to the ceiling, or can it be rotated to mount on a wall?
It can be mounted to pretty much anything. I have mine mounted to both walls and ceilings inside and out.
Perfect. I prefer the form factor of the 520 over the 410. 410 gives me a weird vibe for some reason hahaha
LOL The 520s do get a little bit warmer than the 410s, but I only use the 410s outside.
Hot enough to overheat on a summer's day you think?
Nope. I'm in North Carolina and they went through a LOT of 100+ degree days last year.
Perfect
I just got a wemo dimmer to try out and I really like the switch itself. I currently have ~30 zwave switches and my one concern is 30 more wifi devices on my network seems like a lot. Curious if anyone has a setup with a lot of wifi switches
I remember seeing a tape to dim led lights. Anyone knows what name I can find them under?
(I think I saw them in a Technology connections video)
Whether 30 wifi devices is a lot or not depends mostly on your network equipment
It really shouldn't be a problem, they're light switches. Not exactly chatty stuff
I'd be more concerned with coverage - zwave meshes whereas with wifi everything needs to see the AP
Hey! I have a brushless dc motor that I want to use as a table fan. The electronic speed controller for this motor needs a pulse of 1ms (1ms is zero speed and 2ms pulse is max speed) every 20 ms. I've been trying to do this but no such luck. Could someone guide me a little? Thanks!
yeah i have been trying with servo component, thanks! I'll go to diy.
Anyone using HomePod with HA ?
Can anyone advise on which smoke detectors to get?
- In search for 3 smoke detectors. if one goes off it should trigger the two remaining.
- Zigbee is prefered
- Denmark/Europe
- No budget atm, just searching the market
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
That βοΈ - where in the world matters
As Tinkerer said local laws will matter for that. For something as critical as that I would sugest something that works fully without integration into something like HA (I love HA but i'm not relying on it for something that critical). Given that condition you probably get stuck with propriatory protocol (or some modified & inaccessable variant of a standard protocol). I use Bosch smoke alarms which will set eachother off but you need the Bosch hub. The reaon I chose Bosch is they have an api which exposes all events (and needs no cloud to work) so you get the best of both worlds. A fully standalone system for critical stuff designed for that purpose but also exposes all data if you want it. When I came to do the integration I found someone else beat me to it so I just use the already written one. Fire Angel would be my No 1 choise but they have no integration to other systems and evne thier own app needs cloud to work.
Makes notes on Bosch
The law here already requires interlinked alarms for new installs, but as of next year it applies to existing properties too as well as adding additional detectors required beyond the current baseline.
I've been looking for something I could easily integrate in HA. FireAngel is do-able, but would require monitoring the interlink wire with some DIY magic
Damn, no heat sensor option, well, that's Bosch out then
I will make note of that. Will need to update my rental property !
Would not be supprised if we followed.
We'll be adding a couple of fire sensors, one heat sensor, and another carbon monoxide detector - just to bring it up to the new baseline. I'll probably go for a few more smoke detectors on top - be daft not to
A friends house burnt down 2 years back. If he had had interlinked alarms he would have got to it a lot sooner and would have been a minor garage fire.
If he had used AFDD's instead of the normal RCBO's on his electtic supply there would not have even been a fire just a popped breaker.
Made me really think about better fire alarms!
hey I have a question
if i have a PCB with ESP ( nodemcu ) on it to connect to the rest of the house.
do i need to reprogram it / flash it everytime i change the password ??
is there is a better way of doing that ?
if i changed the wifi credentials on HA, would it automatically upload it to the rest of the devices ?
Picked up a bond bridge, wow, solves a bunch of problems. Bedroom fans/lights are now integrated. And it picked up my 302mhz rf remote for the whole house fan.
Home assistant notified me of a new device and I was up and running in a few minutes.
hi, i am looking for a diy zigbee bridge via lan and low power consumption
@tall stirrup tube has one.
i want to exted my zigbee2mqtt to another building
tube?
ah
ok.
i will have a look
on backorder right now. I have the POE one, works awesome.
ok. that seems not to be diy...
i want to build it myself
i could do sth. with an esp/wemos
but that would have a lot of power consuption i think
Well, he does build them on the side. π
I think he has the board made at one of those places that you send your file to, then populates them himself.
You address the coordinator over the net. pretty solid.
maybe i should try a chain of smartplugs or bulbs.
I'd try 2 coordinators since you have network between the two buildings, then if zigbee2mqtt won't mange 2 coordinators, I'd just run two instances of it.
@tall stirrup I'd probably take this to the zigbee channel, someone may have already done what you're looking at doing.
thanks for the hint. π
2 sniffer sticks would not be a problem.
but i dont want to have 2 raspi or sth. 24/7
Are there any small wifi or zwave relays that work in heat. Like say 120f? I have to put them in outdoor electric hunting boxes to control flood lights.
is using a coral stick on a pi4 possible since the pi4 only has one usb c port and it is used for power?
You can with a USB-C to USB-A adapter.
Is a combo of one-plug surge protector + extension cord as safe as a surge protector with a built-in surge protector?
@upper yoke the Coral comes with a USB-A to USB-C cable anyway
it's not USB-C on both sides
Generally, yes, but a surge protector with built-in plugs is always going to be preferable as the wiring will be matched to the joules rating. When using an ext cord with a surge protector, you're mixing wire gauges which could mess with the protection.
can someone recommend a good outdoor motion sensor, long battery life or plugin
The Hue outdoor motion sensors are really good, imho. Weatherproof, 2+ years battery, etc.
Plus Zigbee.
do you have to use a huebridge?
Nope. I have mine paired directly to my coordinator and Z2M.
Zigbee coordinator (USB stick, external, etc) and Zigbee2MQTT. But you can use ZHA as well.
Ahhhh... Then there's the Ecolink PIR motion sensors, but you'll have to make them weatherproof (using a bit of silicon). Other than those, I don't know of any outdoor motion sensors.
probably should have got a combo USB, but opted for the cheaper zwave only for $21
There are also the Shelly Motion Sensors that supposedly have long battery life and are wifi although expensive and not rated for outside
Zigbee really opens you up to a whole lot more hardware.
I hate Zwave haha
I've heard a lot of grumblings lately about the Shelly motion sensors. Missed alerts, etc. Can't be certain of the connection stability though.
is the hue bridge only work with hue devices?
Yes... well, ish. It'll work with other 3rd party products that support Zigbee3. But it can be finicky.
But, when going with the Hue bridge, there's other caveats... It'll only support ~50 devices max and only with Hue sensors (no 3rd party there). So, door/contact sensors, water leak sensors, etc won't work with it.
Nope. I'm using this: https://www.tubeszb.com/product/cc2652_coordinator/1 but he's out of stock currently.
Depending on where you are, there's this: https://www.tindie.com/products/electrolama/zzh-cc2652r-multiprotocol-rf-stick
Hmm interesting that one
also, anyway to integrate old honywell door/window sensors from ademco alarms?
I LOVE... like, LOVE LOVE LOVE my CC2652P2.
I like the ethernet implementation
I booked marked it if i ever get zigbee devices
I'm one of those Conbee II people that others look down on π
I'm looking down on you right now. lol
Hmmmm... not sure? Are they wireless?
I ran the Conbee II for awhile, but I quickly killed it route-wise.
using the Zooz ZST10 S2 Stick
Not a bad Zwave controller, from what I hear.
wireless, but they use their own mesh signal
Hmmm... you might want to see if Konnected (https://konnected.io) can integrate them.
how many devices do you have? π
Doesn't Konnected only integrate wired sensors?
LOL at the time I was ~130 devices. But, since then I've replaced almost all my Zigbee bulbs with WiFi ones.
Dunno
There's also an AlarmDecoder integration for Honeywell alalrm panels
maybe you can add them that way if you still have the panel
not the easiest thing however
I'm at 62 devices right now. (After I converted 60 bulbs to WiFi lol)
found this too... https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/envisalink/
Damn and I've been doing the opposite mostly
both require you buy an extra board to interface with
Yeah, I think I'm going to convert some of the bulbs back to Zigbee. I went all in with the Philips Wiz bulbs because they're SUPER cheap for RBG/effects. But, I've come to realize that I really don't need disco-effects in the bathroom. π
Never say never!
Right?!
I just bought som bulbs from Alie preflashed with Tasmota
not bad at all. Not great colours of course but for their price I can't complain too much
Pre-flashed you say?! hmmmm...
whats so good about Tasmota
Open-source firmware, tons of options (depending on the device), built-in HTTP server, built-in MQTT support... etc.
(Yes, I have that saved as a clipboard entry lol)
The disadvtantage is that they have serate RGB LEDs than the whites and those are always much less in number so it doesn't do so well in low brightness colours
Also even has the ability to fake itself as a Hue bulb so Alexa can find it without having to go through HA for example
It's a great piece of firmware
is it possible to get alerts outside home network without paying for a cloud service?
Sure. Setup a Slack, Telegram, etc notify platform in HA.
still using my smartthings bridge, for SMS
Blah... sms... β
mobile_app too these days
That's typically what I use... Mobile app + Slack + Pushover == never miss an alert. lol
BTW in case you want to have a look π https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001879808728.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.3d544c4dPeADLe
I was going to ask for a link. Get outta my head! lol
Never!
$$$$$ for a bulb
the other disadvtantage I saw they have ridiculously big heads
That's not what she said π
Ooohhhh, but they're using ESP8285 chips! Those blow the 8266 chips out of the water!
(imho)
so what's the different between slack vs pushover or telegram..
Preference
isn't telegram the most popular?
Pushover is a one time $4.99 charge (lifetime license). Slack is free. Telegram is free.
And if you already use one for example might as well use that one for HA too
I don't know about popular... I use Slack only because it integrates with damn near everything and adding bots is easy.
what else do you integrate Slack with ?
getting out of topic but it's Sunday no one is looking lol
Unraid, Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, node-red, AgentDVR... the list goes on.
LOL shhhhh you'll wake up Tinkerer.
Oooh they do a GU10 version too. Thanks!
Ha!
Just be mindful of colours I guess though
Damn... I didn't notice that! I have been searching for WiFi GU-10s forEVER!
I went with Yeelight's GU10s because they were on a good prive
I usually wait until the Lifx ones go on sale
they have the MINIs right now in case you want any of those
the GU10s from LIFX are unreasonably expensive!! I don't get it
100 something for 2
I had to pull my Lifx bulbs because for some reason the older firmware over-saturated my network to the point I had to reboot my APs.
Yeah, Lifx has always been in the realm of "rich people" toys π lol BUT... the color reproduction and stability is second to none.
Yeah don't pay full price. Once or twice a year you can get them 30-50% off.
<<< MINIs? LOL
Exactly for quality I'd put LIFX to the top. I just can never justify the price
Yeah. Though the Aeotec zwave bulbs were up there price wise too.
Isn't everything Zwave UP there anyway though
water sensors are also one of those unreasobably overprices things
Early days of HA they were the only freaking zwave device that would work reliably for me. I gave up.
I hear it's better now.
Honestly, it was right around the 0.7x branches that I got fed up with z-wave and swore I would only use it for devices that I couldn't find a zigbee alt for.
Yeah I think it was the 0.8x for me
Eh? I still have more problems out of my z-wave devices than I do my zigbee devices.
Oh no. Earlier than that.
I have to restart ZW2M at least twice a month.
Yeah... hell, you've been here forever Tom.
(Waiting for you to say "forever")
According to the dates in the blog. I was on Macquarrie Island getting ready to come home and wasting tax payers time.
I do't think I'll ever get into Zwave
I've just started with zigbee and wish I'd gone more that way than wifi.
Especially for response time as well. Powering on a wifi bulb vs a zigbee bulb takes ages for HA to see it
ALthough my very stable zigbee network has a week now where it's dropping my lights
Really? Mine are pretty closed to instant. But, Wiz bulbs are all UDP, so there's that.
LIFX lights e.g
So, we'll be seeing you #zigbee-archived soon? lol
Do you mean from power off?
Yeah
I skim it. That's where I got the advice for Tubes' coordinator, but I've had no issues so haven't really posted anything there.
Gotcha... yeah, LOVE Tube's work. I think Tink and I are probably his 2 biggest cheerleaders.
Ah, see I have mine wired to be permanently powered on. I have Shelly switches that don't have the load terminals connected and just do automation in HA.
Ha yeah is he paying you a commission yet?
LOL Nope. I offered to do it for free... I have his coordinator and 2 routers... My mesh has been super-solid since.
Well, except for my Sengled bulbs... but they blow chunks anyway.
Does anyone know if the Shelly Dimmer 2 fits inside the Shelly button accessory? (This: https://shelly.cloud/products/shelly-button-smart-home-automation-device/, so not the battery powered button1)
Any ideas? My RPI started running 10Β°C hotter about 6 hours ago. The time was around 3:40 am when we were asleep. I checked the logs and there is nothing around that time to indicate why. I did upgrades of core and supervisor earlier yesterday so don't think they are related.
Okay. I have no idea what happened but after 10.5 hours of running hotter, it looks like the CPU has dropped back down to a closer to normal temperature.
Hi, does anyone know if capacitors have temperature requirements? The one I installed for my no-neutral light switch is buzzing quite audibly and I would like to stuff the enclosure with some foam or something to counteract that
Did you update to 6.0 from 5.0 or from an earlier version? Could have been a database migration if you were on an older version
I did move to MariaDB on a NAS the other day. Otherwise I install updates as they are available.
Not sure where to ask this but... where might I find some help troubleshooting some Nortek / GoControl in-wall switches that aren't reporting manual switch states with Z-Wave JS?
That'd be #zwave-archived
thanks
Are there any camera options that can store video locally and work with HA obviously?
Well, most won't store locally, but you can use any camera that support RTSP/ONVIF and your choice of #cameras-archived software
Thanks
i am looking to purchase a zigbee adapter for HA running on a Pi 4. which one is better, zigbee2mqtt or zha integration?
might want to check in #zigbee-archived
https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/ I read this article great information and CC2652R Multiprotocol RF Stick is good, I have ordered for myself.
can you give me the direct link to the article? the provided link goes to the main page
it is the main link Getting started > Information etc
what we need to run Zigbee2 MQTT
https://www.tindie.com/products/electrolama/zzh-cc2652r-multiprotocol-rf-stick/#product-reviews
this might help if you just want to jump straight to the adapter
thanks
I have some questions about using an Odroid N2+ with HA. Is it possible to make it boot from an SSD and run HA on the SSD? Do I still need an eMMC module? Is there any tutorial on how to do this?
If you want to run HAOS then you'd want to ask the folks in #330990055533576204
Okay I will
It should be able to, but the answer will depend on your goals and budget
i just want something stable and an neat all in one package. im fairly certain my argon case ssd controller has just died
i3 is fine for HA itself, but if you want to do image processing then not so much
looking for a supervised install really
π€¨ Good luck then
Do read all the warnings and requirements, because it's not as easy as some (very misleading) videos make it look
Either way, i3 or better, depending on what you want it to do...
But, if you're not running HAOS then anything that runs Debian will do
oh, HAOS on a nuc will work
something like this would be OK for a haos then i assume. Probably massive overkill
but given this is all that now shows up on etcher, im not entirely sure whats going on https://imgur.com/a/t4Vgz0s
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002487769084.html (if you weren't running HAOS) would be enough
We got a Beelink with that CPU for our project. Cute and low power but allows you to increase the TDP if you need a bit more
not passive though like the one Tinkerer linked
how long to wait for first startup on Raspi 3?
There are installation method channels that would be a more appropriate place to ask that
I'm trying to integrate my arduino node devices using nRF24L01. I have a MasterNode.py script that uses sqlalchemy to create and populate a sql db. I am really new to this HA OS. I saw there was an Add-on for SQL. I am wondering, can someone tell me if I need to create the sql db in the UI using the add-on? Can I run my MasterNode.py script in the background on the raspberry pi 4 B to populate that db? If so, do I have to do something specific to make that happen? Is there an add-on where I can manipulate fields within the db tables (such as boolean switches/values, other variables, etc/). Then, last and certainly not least, Is there an event triggering mechanism in HA OS that I can have my MasterNode.py to 'listen' for that would execute certain functions within the script to pull data from the db and it can do its thing by sending messages to the individual nodes?
Is this even the right room to ask this?
No, prob better to start in #add-ons-archived, but I see you already posted in there
Hi all, I hope this is the right channel. Do you have any recommendation for a router? My main purpose is limit camera & some hardware access to internet. I need only a WAN port and wi-fi is not a big concern. UDM is not a choice in Turkey so and advice is much appreciated.
Can't someone advise me? I put on a 32GB SD card haos_rpi3-64-6.0.rc3.img using balenaetcher. However, when booting the Raspberry Pi 3, the SD card activity only lights up briefly, the monitor lights up as if it detects that it has a signal, but only a black screen remains and nothing happens.
Hey are there some buttons like Flic 2 or Styrbar without extra Hub/Gateway? (HA is on Pi3) Can i connect Ikea Styrbar with Smart Life, HA or Alexa?
The Styrbar is a Zigbee button (there's TONS of Zigbee buttons available as well).
So i habe to buy something like conbee II for my pi3 and i can pair it with Styrbar All functions?
Just not an actual Conbee - unless you're going to use deCONZ
The #zigbee-archived channel can advise you on better (aka CC2652) choices
Okay thanks so i assume i can do custom automations with it then nice π
Generally speaking, with HA if have an entity or events you can
I donβt think the thing I am looking for exists, but hereβs hoping Iβm wrong: in wall Z-wave power monitoring outlet?
There arenβt many good options
I tried an Enerwave thatβs no longer sold. I would recommend a plug-in module like a zooz Zen15 or similar
Yeah I may go that way eventually... Iβm using S31βs at the moment, but they are killing my wifi along with the smart switches and such.
I really didnβt think through network health when I made the majority of my purchases.
Hello everyone, what are some cheap tablets that you recommend for home assistant frontend?
Pretty much anything you can buy today would probably work. But from personal experience: Don't pick one based on it being the cheapest.
that was exactly what I was gonna do
or try something econd hand, like a Galaxy Tab 2 or 3
I got the cheapest one "just to test". That was three years ago.
It works great for HA, but the viewing angle is atrocious, and for some reason it kept dropping the wifi connection daily for the first year or so. Notice the AP less than 2 m away.
good point
Just asking for people opinon what they think is the best smart bulb to get. I was thinking Phillps Hue but I realise that's because of how little I actually know of smart bulbs out there.
My requirements is, need to be high quality in that no subtle flicker (the ones I picked before had it and while not noticeable seem to cause everyone but the kiddo headaches), has colour control, obviously HA support them. Price is a consideration but not much as making sure it it doesn't cause everyone headaches.
Hue is the gold standard, at least with Zigbee
A lot of reviews, only the Hue is the Zigbee one, the rest seem to be wifi, althought I get the feeling Zigbee is better than wifi
To be honest, I've found my Gledopto (Zigbee) Pro controller to be awesome, but the quality of the light itself then depends on the strip you attach. I'd expect (but haven't tested) that their Pro bulbs are also good
(in this application anyway)
Innr (Zigbee) bulbs get good reviews too, and I'm very happy with my Ikea (Zigbee) CCT bulbs
Innr, CCT Bulbs, and Lifx
is there.. uh, advanaged/disadvanage to Zigbee and wifi. I'm thinking, just confirming, that Zigbee is lower powered and use a lower frequence and you can get more devices there and not bog down wifi if you have a lot of wifi bulbs. I doubt what I know so much
Ikea Tradfri actually
CCT is white colour temperature
RGB means you get colour
CCT means you get warm to cold white
RGB-CCT means you get both
Zigbee uses 2.4 GHz, just like WiFi (and Bluetooth). There's pinned messages in #zigbee-archived about how it works, and how it and WiFi can interfere
OH! Right, I was completely wrong π
You can however deploy many hundreds of Zigbee devices without issue, assuming you buy the right stuff and plan ahead
Z-Wave uses a lower frequency
(Zigbee Pro can too, as can Zigbee 3.0, but actual support for that is rare)
So is there an advanage to using Zigbee over wifi type bulbs/devices?
so the advantage is subjective?
Somewhat. For smaller installs it doesn't matter, but IMO for larger installs getting it off your WiFi is good
My previous wifi router started experiencing issues once I hit 15 devices, but with a proper one I haven't noticed a difference. There's probably a bit of power consumption difference too
Also, then you can use all those nice cheap Zigbee sensors, the ones with a multi-year battery life
I guess because Zigbee has those channels that's not covered by wifi and thus you can fit those devices in that gap?
Well, more that they're entirely different protocols
WiFi is like a big lorry - it's great for moving big things from point A to point B.
Zigbee is like a relay - it shuffles small packages around through various routes.
That's a good way to explain it, thank you
zigbee is mini morris?
Mini Cooper S, old style π
... now I'm thinking the Italian job movie and I've never seen the damn movie
First, or second?
gg brain
Or both
hope its not the remake
I've not seen either, thinking of both I guess
The first is good, the second is fun, but not quite the to the same level
trying to get back into hardware research
I hate my brain
Sooo.. Phillps Hue the RGB is gold standard, hmm Innr looking cool
Technically, the Mini Morris came out before the S (1959 versus 1969). Also, the 1969 version of The Italian Job used modified Mk1 Minis that were actually 1969 Cooper S prototypes and yes, it was the best version.
Not that I like Minis or anything π
hello "that guy"

Yup... looks just like my kitchen up until my first scrum of the day
I have a Wyze door sensor that shows as a binary_sensor ... all good and well. However, for an automation (door has been left open at night ) I believe I need to set that entity up as a device using a device template?? Can anyone give me directions to an example? Cheers
trigger only gives me devices and not entities
No it doesn't, but that's a topic for #automations-archived
(and the docs linked from that channel's topic)
(100% of my automations use entities)
OK - thanks for the prod .. .I think I have it sussed
What ER14250 batteries is everyone using. I have 3 homeseer leak detectors that seem to be inconsistent in the way they abuse the battery. Want to replace batteries in all three with a reliable battery before I start changing settings.
What are people using for outside lights?
Is there a good zigbee or (shudders) wifi spotlight with motion sensing?
Basically I have two outside spotlight type lights on separate switches. I could just put in some shelly's to control them based on time and have them on from dusk till bed, but i'd prefer a motion sensor so they are only on when we are out back. the motion sensors I use (aqara) are really indoor not heavy duty so they are out, plus its another thing to set up and install outside.
So i'm probably looking for a light with a built in motion sensor and the question is do I get a dumb one that I just throw a shelly in the switches or do I go smart (then of course the switches themselves become a problem)
Anyways just curious what others are using for outside, backyard lighting and controls
Just reinstalled HA on an SSD (in combination with a Pi4) and I want to install Deconz but I cant get it to work. I (think) am doing the same as I did before but in the options I cant save the device as I get the following message Failed to save add-on configuration, Missing required option 'device' in deCONZ (core_deconz). Got {'device': None}. someone here who knows the problem?
Sounds like you're using #add-ons-archived - and people have posted about that error recently, a search should find more

I am dealing with an issue since I upgraded to ZWave JS v.0.1.24 as well as using Z-Wave JS to MQTT 0.19.0. I have a Aeotec ZW096 Smart Plug which prior to the upgrade from the older deprecated ZWave version, was updating the values when a device was in use. In this particular case, a washing machine, but now the values are not changing. My entities are named as:
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [W]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [V]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [A]
Washing Machine Smart Switch: Electric Consumed [kWh]
As of right now since the washing machine is running and I was expecting the values to change which reflects that the appliance is getting electricity, but nothing is happening. The last time the values updated was yesterday. Is there a setting in the configuration of the ZWave JS that I am missing?
you'll get more help for this in #zwave-archived
Okay. Thanks.
Hello
I'm not a hardware guy and could use some direction
They provide an assembled printed circuit board here that converts analog AO voltage output to binary switch.
I am searching for this component, but preferably one that is assembled ready for battery power
you're in #diy-archived territory
I'll X-POST there
That looks like a #zwave-archived topic.
Sounds like you wanted #zwave-archived
lol
Apologies if hardware is not the right place for this, i've set up a new HA instance using hyper V on an old 2012 server. From my understanding reading the docs this does not support USB devices. Does anyone know a way I can get a Zigbee / Zap running from a Hyper V install ?
You could use a network connected Zigbee coordinator, or you could run Zigbee2MQTT on another computer
#zigbee-archived could help with both of those
Thank you @winged knoll
Hello. I want to read data from Ph meter Ph-4502C by connecting it to the Sonoff Basic (tasmota integration). I first tried to connect "Po" pin on pH meter (Analog output) to the Sonoff Basic "Rx" pin. It figured out that "Po" pin should be connected to "ADC" pin which lacks in sonoff. So next we tried to connect "Do" pin on pH meter to Sonoff Basic "Rx" pin. When I configure Sonoff Basic module I don't know which readout to choose. I open Tasmota tab, go to "Configuration">"Configure module">Click next to GPIOO3 (which corresponds to "Rx" pin) and then I don't know what to choose. In case of temperature sensor "AM2301" you have "AM2301" value in the GPIOO3 dropdown. Anyone knows what should I choose next to GPIOO3 to get my pH readings? Thanx
@lime ginkgo Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
If you don't get any responses after an hour or more, and your message is no longer on screen, it is fine to re-post or post a link to it.
You were directed to #diy-archived where you posted just fine π
Hey, anyone know which would be the best smart remote/IR blaster to use? I already have a harmony hub from my pre home assistant days, so I was hoping that would work well, but Iβm not finding much flexibility for how it integrates. Any other more preferable options that anyone else has used?
What's lacking? The only other one that I know of is the Broadcom IR hubs, but, imho, they're worse than the harmony hubs.
Well, I guess I might not be finding this with Harmony yet, but I'm looking for a way of customizing how much the two units converge with HA. For example, I want to be able to press a button on the remote to trigger something directly in HA rather than through the Harmony Hub Activity. Or the flip side of I would want to send custom IR signals from HA without a certain activity.
I don't really like Harmony Hubs interface or means of managing controls and devices with activities and would hope to be able to exchange that for Home Assistant to handle those controls for any of the devices.
And again, maybe I'm missing something in HA, but I haven't found out if you can map custom commands directly to HA from the remote or likewise if you can send IR signals to devices through the IR blaster directly from HA both without needing to create any activities within Harmony Hub. At most just add the devices to interface with and let HA take over from there
What are your must-haves for a smart bedroom/homeoffice? I have ~200usd remaining from my moving budget
First, work out what problems you want to solve π
Just looking for ideas. I found out that smart blinds are a thing just few days ago for example
Loving the announcements from today, ESP Web Tools and Improv, super neat!
I love PWAs (Progressive Web Apps) and I'm very happy you chose to go this route even with only partial support. We need to push this technology forward and show e.g. Apple that this can provide great UX while still being secure!
Not sure if this is the right channel, but I guess it's close enough ^^
anyone have any recommendations for outdoor power plugs?
for the USA? with two outlets?
prefer connection over Zigbee, but willing to go with WIFI
I have an esp32-a1s. Any chance this can be supported with esphome? I'm currently looking at squeezelite.
@harsh pagoda ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the Home Assistant side integration with it). They also have their own Discord server too.
Can anyone tell me which bulbs support the ability to transition?
My Hue bulbs do, my Wyze bulbs do not. I was looking for something affordable.
The other half of that is what duration - many bulbs can transition over a small time (tens of seconds), not so many can transition over a longer time (tens of minutes)
Do see though the pinned message for the other things that would be good to know
USA/~$25 per bulb/would prefer zig-bee or z-wave though open to WiFi.
RGB? CCT? RGB-CCT?
~$10 per bulb would be preferable
I've found my Tradfri (CCT) bulbs transition just fine, as do my Gledopto ones
Osram did too, but those can be junk, so don't buy one π
CCT means tunable, not color right?
Aye
How dim do they get? My Hue bulbs go pretty low, I can use them as a nightlight. The Wyze bulbs are too bright.
I was hoping that wasn't the case :/
On a separate note. Hubitat/HUSBZB or individual adapters (connected to Home Assistant)?
Right now I have a Hue bridge, but want to get a open Zigbee or Z-Wave hub.
Individual adapters
For Zigbee you want a current generation EmberZNet (if using ZHA) or CC2652 (if using either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT) board
For Z-Wave you want a 700 series stick, if available in your region
See #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived
Hey everyone, lately I'm having huge issues with my esp32's sniffing my ble thermometers. The boards are becoming unresponsive OR performing random reboots. I managed to catch an error in my logs. It looks like this: [libprotobuf ERROR google/protobuf/wire_format_lite.cc:577] String field 'SubscribeLogsResponse.message' contains invalid UTF-8 data when parsing a protocol buffer. Use the 'bytes' type if you intend to send raw bytes. Exception in thread Thread-3: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python3.7/threading.py", line 917, in _bootstrap_inner self.run() File "/opt/esphome/esphome/api/client.py", line 408, in run self._run_once() File "/opt/esphome/esphome/api/client.py", line 398, in _run_once msg.ParseFromString(raw_msg) google.protobuf.message.DecodeError: Error parsing message
I have to mention, I'm not using any weird characters in any of my configs.
#diy-archived would be the place for help with ESPs, unless they're running Tasmota or ESPHome
I'm running ESPHome
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the Home Assistant side integration with it). They also have their own Discord server too.
sorry, forgot to mention that
They have a Discord that'll get you better help, or failing that #diy-archived here
I've tried their discord, but since here are a lot of more users, I thought I'll try my luck here as well. I'm going to post in #diy-archived too. Thanks.
Amy recommendations for venetian blind motors? Ideally I would be able to control the tilt angle for the slats. So far I've only shortlisted Somfy but I read that their integration isn't that great..
You can do this with the remote.send_command service and specifying the device. You don't need an activity setup at all to do that. As for the remote, yeah, Harmony locked it down so you really can't do a lot with it it terms of customizations to 3rd party services. For me, I actually use node-red for all 3 of my Harmony Hubs. I expose switches into HA and can control nearly anything that way.
Can I somehow easily try this change out myself before getting it from a release?
https://github.com/zigpy/zha-device-handlers/pull/926
#zigbee-archived would know more
Any wifi recommendations something that supports wifi 6 plus can handle like 50+ devices connected?
TP-Link Omada, Meraki, Aruba, and (bottom of the list) Unifi.
Also the huge wave of WiFi 6 routers, like the Asus ZenWiFi range
Yeah, but those all still have consumer grade materials... There still isn't a consumer grade router that has a backplane capable of sustained traffic from 50+ clients. Granted, some can do 40-50, but not sustained and not without saturating the ARP tables.
Thanks I will take alook at those
For the Aruba, you would need an access point and a switch at a minimum. The controller is cloud based.
BUT (and a big but here), they charge a monthly (or yearly fee) as does Meraki. Personally, I'd look at the Omada products.
I have both Omada and Unifi systems here. Omada is my preferred for cost and Unifi for stability.
ok I wass looking at the unifi dream pro or whatever, seems to have everything in one package for 400 can beat that with omada?
Not in one product like the UDM can. But price-wise, you can get a router, switch, and AP for the same price with Omada.
Or at least close to it.
BUT (lol again), the WiFi6 option on Omada is HUGE. Like the AP itself is ginormous. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-EAP620-HD-High-Density-Deployment/dp/B08TRPMC69
haah can't tell need a banana for scale. Man this is overwheming
Yeah, it's f'ing huge like 2 hippos got together and had a AP baby.
I just don't want my lights constantly getting booted from router happened all the time with router provided by ISP with around 15 lights
I hid mine up in my attic pointing down.
Yeah, that's going to be an issue on consumer grade hardware. UDP/multicast usually sucks on those.
BUT... $129 for a WiFi6 POE powered AP, as huge as it is, still isn't bad.
Yup
but I need a switch to go with it?
my ISP modem/router has a switch built in, can I use that or need the TP-Link brand?
You're going to want a better switch and/or router. The problem with consumer hardware is almost always the switching that's done. For 50+ devices/clients, your ISP modem/router will croak.
It has to go through the modem eventually though,
modem -> switch -> access point vs modem -> access point. Nothing else would be hooked to the switch except maybe rasp pi but modem has 4 outputs
That's the setup that you'll want. modem (acting as NOTHING but a modem) <-> switch <-> AP(s)/devices.
ok thanks
Gah... thought I posted this earlier: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Integrated-Lightening-Protection-TL-R605/dp/B08QTXNWZ1
and I just get multiple access points and run cable to them no kind of repeater or anything
So, it'd be modem <-> router <-> switch <-> everything else.
Yup.
POE all the things!
I appreciate the help
No problem!
Is this the right place to ask for smart ceiling fan suggestions? If so, I am looking for one. π Wifi/ESP based, and in Europe.
or any other slow, silent fan actually.
Don't really need to mount it
Hey, curious question, what about UniFi puts it at the bottom of the list for you. (Not trying to be antagonistic, just curious what your experience has been like) Iβve got the UDMP with their U6-LR myself and have thought it to be a great solution. But I also like hearing about any detriments that Iβm not quite aware of yet.
Also, what lights do you use that connect to wifi directly instead of some hub or something like zigbee?
A few of reasons... First being their lack of attention to security and the horrible way it was handled after their latest breach. Second, there are features that I want/need they still have refused to implement. Case in point, a simple way to configure/manage igmp_proxy support (which is needed for proper mDNS routing between VLANs). Third, their stance on deprecating products (like the US-UAP-PRO which has literally been out for less than 3 years). It might be nitpicky, but I paid close to $300 for my APs less than 2 years ago and I'll have to replace them in less than a year.
Not to hijack but... I have ~60+ Philips Wiz bulbs which are WiFi. I went with them over Zigbee because they are WAY cheaper than Hue bulbs (with better features, imho).
Innovelli zwave RGBW availability......like wtf. I am tired of waiting

this the channel for moving from Rpi4 to more robust hardware? or is there a dedicated 'server' channel
that depends on your installation method
using OS now, but not sure yet what to use on lets say a Nuc, or comparable machine
hope to find the discussion channel that can help me with answers to that question π
What are your questions?
is there some 'advised' hardware setup, considering processor, memory etc etc, to be able to use HA without a hiccup, but also add other things like camera streams... dedicated camera server, or use HA, want to do a 1 time upgrade now, so dont mind spending a bit more if I can do it right now. (think +3000 entities, average Processor usage now 14%, without camera;s just yet)
It really comes down to all those "other" things
Streaming a camera is one thing. Motion/object detection is a whole 'nother game
reading about Plex server, whihc is now on my NAs (shutting down at night), MariaDB, Grafana and Influx. guess that would be it for now
object detection would be very nice indeed....
Plex with transcoding is CPU intensive. Without it runs fine on a Pi3
So, you're likely looking at a minimum of an i5 with a Coral board (m.2 connector)
More is good though, particularly if you're looking at Plex
you mean stand alone, or in the HA OS
Either way
ah ok
Transoding video is hard work
yes, its too hard for my current NAS....
so better do it right in one shot now
of course, I dont want to waste energy either.... so it must be aseconomic as possible
Well, there's two things there:
- A modern CPU will idle at low power
- High performance CPUs will spend less time in high power modes, and may actually draw less power over time than a low performance CPU that's very busy
I have a Xeon that idles with less power draw than the hard disks in the system...
a, yes, thats smart indeed.
Best canned lights? There are of course the hues, any others to look at for RGBW? Mixed reviews on the generic wifi ones on amazon.
These will not work with HA correct? https://www.lumarysmart.com/products/lumary-4-inch-rgb-ww-cw-smart-recessed-lights-wi-fi-led-downlight-4pcs?variant=39402652008653¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAjwiLGGBhAqEiwAgq3q_pkN06aZewSh72w5HXpGQOtqNkYRBFehscGlRv0wRwyl3ufeuMHuxBoC9qUQAvD_BwE
They might if they are Tuya based.
I use these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-Color-and-Tunable-White-5-6-in-LED-65W-Equivalent-Dimmable-Smart-Wi-Fi-Wiz-Connected-Recessed-Downlight-Kit-555623/310289033 but I don't think they have a 4" and they aren't RGBW.
oh great I was looking at those, but said they use "WIZ" which also doesn't show up on integrations tab
awesome
any reco's for a Hose Timer device
suggestions for (aliexpress) rfxtrx compatible door sensors?
oh rad my littr robot integrates already
lol
Now i can grab photos of my cats when they go to poop with a esp32 cam lol
ah the little joys of life
which code/method are you using to grap photos? i'm having trouble using the flashlight/led more than once
I haven't integrated with HA yet but the pin for the lamp also is shared with boot and I think sd card
Depends on the version iirc
Might need to hit it with a diode or a transistor
I forget cause I always just didmt use the flash bc it was a pita
I was just going to use a transistor to trigger a different lamp and probably put lights kind of inside the globe
There's a esp32 on the LR board too btw
Hi, I have a bluetooth device on my computer that appears to be operating and I have it shared through my VirtualBox USB to communicate to Home Assistant, however when I do a scan on terminal it states there's no default bluetooth device available. Is there something I need to do in my Config to get the bluetooth to be recognized by Homeassistant?
Can the guest OS see it, or is the guest OS HA? Can other VMs see it when you use the same type of config with them?
Is there a way to invert a door/window sensor, short of using a template? I have an Ecolink Door/Window sensor 2.5. It's wired as normally-closed, but I'm using it with a reed switch to detect my doorbell, which means it's actually now normally open.
@gentle mauve HA OS is operating in VM when using another guest it recognizes the device but says it's down.
Is the device and entity the same? I'm finding out about this. Might not have drivers in HA vm that are compatible with VB. Guest Additions might help if you haven't used it yet
@gentle mauve The Bluetooth device is a Realtek dongle. I'm trying to get my miflora to work with them so those are my entities. I tried to test the Bluetooth through the terminal but it doesn't detect the Bluetooth so I suspect that's the problem.
Does your virtual machine have the capacity to do Bluetooth or whatever I'm super new to this whole home assistant thing so I'm just taking guesses at your issue with my limited experience with virtualbox. And always having a lot of problems with virtualbox and connectivity and pass through of various devices
Yea I believe so. When I disable bluetooth on the USB devices, it won't even spool up bluetooth on the guest machine. So when its enabled it just says down, so that's progress. I know the USB devices can be touch and go, I'm using USB for my Zwave and X10 and they work 95% of the time. vs 100% back when I had HA on a pi.
So, is the best solution if running a PI to ditch the SD card and move to an external HD?
Iβve seen a few posts stating they are βcrapping outβ on the microSD and I just havenβt seen issue with it.
Generally, yes. Itβll be much faster and more reliable. You can choose whether to continue to boot from the card and use the SSD for the data, or to boot directly from the SSD
Was thinking of skipping rasp pi all together and getting an old macmini. Thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/itm/234051779994?hash=item367e92bd9a:g:orcAAOSwFtxgyhxp
Better than a Pi
Do USB sticks pass through esxi reliably or not really?
Mostly
Or is there such a thing as network connected zwave and zigbee host devices?
thank you very much
If by βhost deviceβ you mean βcontrollerβ, you can install zwave_js on a Pi0, put it anywhere, and connect to it from your HA instance over the network
Yeah thanks wasn't sure what the lexicon was
I'm thinking about moving from HAOS on a pi4 to supervised on a VM.
Supervised...
Could I relegate the existing pi to be just the controller for zwave and zigbee?
Yeah, just say
uh-oh lol
Don't touch Supervised
Seriously, if you're going with a VM, use HAOS or Container
Supervised is what happens when you take HAOS, remove the OS part, and let you manage it - with very fixed constraints on it
Very few people manage that correctly, and as a result pain follows
gotcha
And yes, you can continue using the Pi for Zigbee and Z-Wave
do you think that would be more reliable or is passing through a stick in USB typically fine
Generally it's fine, but I run mine separate for other reasons and I have no issues
Are the other reasons maybe valuable to me and I just don't know what i don't know or are they pretty edge case specific to what you're doing?
Well, it's one of those all eggs in one basket things
some people like that, some of us don't
Yeah that makes sense
I like a bit of decoupling, since I can upgrade things as I want, or not, and roll things back etc
Then again, I've worked in IT for a long time, I have a perspective that's shaped by that history
That's kind of why I want to move to a VM, probably split the difference between where I'm at now, and as robust as your implementation. I'm okay if everything is in one basket, but I also would like to gain a VM snapshot parachute.
Hey everyone - looking for some advice! I live in the US, budget is open ended for now, and really my only requirement is that I have local control (no cloud). Iβm looking for advice on LED strips. Iβm familiar with the Wemos D1 Mini (WLED or Tasmota) combined with power and an LED strip. Is that the route you all would recommend for my local control requirement? Or are there other options that might be worth looking at ?
What do you need led strips for?
Theyβre going behind a desk, maybe light up a hallway when someone walks by, same thing with stairs.
So just clone the MicroSD to the SSD
There are threads on the forum
i'll hop on
wondering if I don't just grab anothe MMini as stated above and save the 4 in rack Pi's for other processes
That would be better
Can anyone recommend some RGBW bulbs that don't flicker at <30% brightness? I'm sick of buying bulbs and sending them back due to flickering. UK if possible, (Bayonet Cap). Wifi or Zigbee.
which ones have you tried? I have HUE and Innr here. And no issues with either
Hue is just great imo, but its expensive
I'd recommend the Innr ones. They are on zigbee and better price/performance than Hue IMO
how is the light quality from innr compared to hue? ive been thinking about picking up some innr lights
Light quality? Colour accuracy to setting? Not sure what you mean with that
yes, i didnt really know how to word that...
ive seen some cheaper lights that are just trash
decent. Better than the Tint/MΓΌller-Licht strip I have here.
I'd say on the same level as Osram (Ledvance), and I'm unsure if it's just minor calibration difference of the Hue app/lamps being more tuned towards each other between those and Hue
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll pick some up and test them. Are the tuya or did you reflash them?
Ignore that, they're zigbee.
Not used a zigbee bulb before π Do they have built-in router too? Could do with another router
Zigbee bulbs are routers, rejoice
Most
My exuberance shall turn all the bulbs into routers
You must believe
They also sell wifi bulbs (WBY 785 C-2), smaller form-factor, but will they run tasmota? humm, i've sent them an email but i'm not expecting a reply..
I have an acePC doing nothing. I may just go ahead and set that up for HA
Spec: ACEPC Mini PC Intel Celeron J3455,Windows 10 Micro Computer 6GB DDR3 120GB SSD,4K HD Graphics,Gigabit Ethernet,Dual Band Wi-Fi
Going to gut the windows and go for it vs buying another Mac mini
Good afternoon, all. First things first: complete noob regarding HA, and virtually no Linux programming experience.
Any of you that are still reading, π after a less than stellar experience with Smartthings I've decided to go with an open source alternative, namely HA.
Now, after a ton of searching over the past week I find myself at the same point: which hardware to use? Sadly, it seems HA Blue isn't for sale at any price now, so I'd like to set it up on either a mini fanless pc or old laptop - something that's not going to take up a lot of shelf room next to our gateway. A monitor isn't an issue since I can remotely access it very easily via a laptop, phone or tablet. Since they're not going to be used for other activities (for now at least), I have no problems installing HA as a standalone os (if that's even possible on a windows pc).
My problems begin with the getting started section on the .io page where it states if I don't have something or another already installed then I should look to either a pi or odroid install first. The thing is, once I have things set up I don't want to have to concern myself with migrating everything over to another machine. From what I've read, pis & droids aren't meant to be used as an always on device, so it'd be even worse to start over from scratch.
In summary, what I'd like is some type of direction as far as minimum pc requirements (cpu speed, ram etc.), and what the difficulty rating would be to go straight to a pc installation (easier than breathing to fuggeddaboutit). Any and all comments or suggestions are very much welcome (even going as far as saying this may not be the right setup for me - I'd much rather know now than after committing days of work & what little is left of my hair to). Finally, apologies for rambling on like I did...post-middle-aged men do that from time to time. π
I would use a raspberry pi. It can run 24x7 and has lots of guides and videos to support it
Thereβs a lot of folks saying donβt go pi?
If you aren't sure HA is for you I would go with a VM in your current PC just to see what it's like and see whether you actually want to buy dedicated hardware for it. Rather than bying stuff upfront before being sure about it. If you do have an old laptop or mini PC that you don't use then even better can already use that. Either with a VM or by flashing the OS image directly to that hardware. Requirements depend on your usage of course but anything of the last decade would do (perhaps older). Preferably you want something with Intel i3 and not those older intel atom/duo processors. You anyway don't need a screen since HA is a headless system so no problem there. Regarding RPis yes people on the one hand say to start with those when you are just starting up but yes also they are not very good at long term solutions os if you do have alteratives it is best to avoid them.
If you aren't sure HA is for you
This the right place to ask about Fire tablets as HA dashboard devices?
Does the RING motion sensors work with the ring integration?
Thank you! Very informative, and I do have several different laptop/mini pc options available to me as I write this, so I'm in no way concerned with a dedicated machine for it. π
Just noticed that Alexa devices have zigbee hub built in, can I bring those devices into HA?
@austere flare I don't think the motion sensors are included with the Ring integration. I installed the integration and it only detected my camera and doorbell. I hope I am wrong because I would love to integrate my Ring mail box sensor (motion sensor) into HA.
no video from doorbell, right?
Right, it appears to only display the video of the last motion that was detected, but will not show live video.
what do you consider last motion, the current last motion or previous to that?
I think it was the current last motion. I really did not keep it installed very long at all after I say it was not going to be able to integrate my motion sensors and door switches. It didn't even last a day and I uninstalled it.
what did you get instead for the doorbell?
So far, I am only using the Ring app for the doorbell and Ring alarm, and flood light cam. I am using HA for all of my TP-link Kasa light switches.
I got a hikvision camera that has been driving me nuts with false alarms, trying to figure out an alternative
Yeah, I just recently tried a Heimvision camera, but it does not seem to have very good control over motion zones or motion detection sensitivity. The rest of my cameras are Wyze V2 cameras. I haven't tried to integrate them into HA as of yet.
Iβm trying to find my Furbo cameras stream URL so I can build a home assistant plugin for the video stream but Iβm having an issue finding the stream URL. The odd thing is that Iβm sniffing the traffic from the mobile app and when Iβm streaming the video feed there is no URL to the video thatβs being streamed. Has anyone had any experience with trying to find an IP cameras URL ? Trying to figure out why the stream URL isnβt appearing but all other API calls are there
All I can say is I've been running HA since shortly after it was public. I have a complex setup - I've always run it on a Pi. People hate on the PI and that's OK. My point is that if you don't have lots of Linux skills the large documentation/yt/etc behind the PI will help you out the most. You can pick up a pi3 off ebay cheap and get on with your life. Upgrading is just swapping the SD to a faster PI.
A pi is a great way to run Home Assistant, and enough for most.
The Pi is a good starting point, and as long as you know the SD card will fail and are prepared, you'll be ok
My Z-Wave stack still runs on a Pi3 using an SD card
(we'll just gloss over the fact that I've a bunch of Pis running on SD cards π )
Before I moved to a Pi4 + SSD I just remounted /var/log with tmpfs
Sure, but with HA that's not enough π
@novel sphinx When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
If you can move database and log file off the SD, then the bulk of your writes are dealt with
Sorry DB was moved to a USB stick as well
Anyone found good amazone prime day deals for home automation stuff ?
Options probably depend on where in the world you are
what do you guys think of the switchbots? and the curtain bots they got
a good deal now with amazon
Yeah i was looking at those too. I would like to get one to give it a try.
Switchbot curtains havent been that good for me with heavy curtains within their spec π¦
yea same, they say then have carry 8 kg of curtains
still gotta get new curtains so ill be able to look for curtains based on my hardware xD
the switchbots thought, great fun π
wanna get 2 for the living room
@spark badger hows the noise of the curtains ones?
not too bad, quieter then some slow diy ones tried π
I kept them to use somewhere else
speaking of curtains though ... anyone tried Zemismart Tuya Zigbee Curtain devices with ZHA?Cant find them in the blakadder db. BUt does say zigbee 3.0 (https://www.zemismart.com/products/zemismart-curtain-track-tuya-app-zigbee-30-electric-smart-curtain-alexa-goole-home).
@subtle burrow worth a look for a listen if you want/need - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gm5bBW1sRY
mhm thank you
zigbee 3.0 and Tuya cancel each other out in terms of compatibility
Anyone has reference to DIY version of https://www.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-bot ?
Does anyone have any inline dimmer recommendations?
IE: Sonoff, Zigbee etc
trying to keep costs down where possible.
Esp32 + small motor + 3d printed everything else + 120v->5v step down OR ESP32 W 120V RELAY + 120V>5V STEPdown && hide in in a double gang or single gang
My Nest thermostat has disappeared from the Nest app and Google Home app, should I set it up again or will that lead to duplication?
Does anyone have any E14 smart bulb recommendations?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
for those being longer in the game, what's the best value to monitor if a sensor is almost dying (from battery power), is it the battery level or is the voltage more appropriate ?
Does anyone have govee lights that they use in home assistant? I've found some posts online of integrations but I'm curious to hear peoples experiences
I do. But, I'm just using it with one strip, the H6199.
what about this instead of pi? https://www.amazon.com/Mini-PC-Beelink-T4-Ultra-Quiet/dp/B08BC7VWM3?ref_=ast_sto_dp
That's pretty slow by the looks of it, but it should work
I would get something faster though as they shouldn't be much more expensive than that one
yeah I don't know much about all these little intel processors what about this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081H24H8Z/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_7380437J1NXE601A49RW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Still slow and old. J4125 should be better or i3
Used options can be good too if you can find ~i5 one from the last 5-6 years
yeah I was looking at some mac minis from 2012-2013 for not too much more I think they were i5
I run mine on a 2013 NUC i5
sweet lets see if I can find something like that
You can get those cheap and then spend just a little bit more to upgrade the RAM to 16GB and then throw a 500GB SSD in. I have exactly that sitting in my server rack right now (with a 1TB SSD in it).
hmmm wonder, do they take same ram from current gen intel imac?
actually do have a 16 gig stick of that sitting around
they use the laptop ram type most likely
This is what I use: https://www.amazon.com/TECH-Upgrade-PC3-12800-1600MHz-MacBook/dp/B00L3QE8G2
not the same but still not bad price anyway
you can find used ram too quite cheap
ram tends to survive even the rest of the system dies of old age so these float around
question
i'm new to this, but i really want to be able to control my room using voice commands
I live in [Saudi Arabia]
and i was wondering
-
is it possible to use my [Raspberry pi] to use [Home Assistant] to use voice commands without needing anything else? (like google assistant, or Alexa)
-
i want to start with being able to turn on and off my pc using voice commands, i will see what i want next later.
can anyone help me with that? (mention or reply to this message please)
What a weird Mad Lib
Both Google Assistant and Alexa are supported by Home Assistant. Read through the docs and ask on the #integrations-archived channel if you have problems setting it up https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/google_assistant/
if i downloaded [Home Assistant] in my [Raspberry pi 3] will i be able to use it to use [Google Assistant]?
or do i have to buy a different device
easier for me to know what names i used in my messages later
"flying" "sheep"
this is better?
You'll need a Google Assistant device yes like Google Home Mini or something. There's also Almond but I have no idea how that works https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/#voice
that is what i was talking about, they are not supported in my country, so is there any other way to use voice commands?
You should be able to use them in English. Maybe Almond supports other languages too, I don't know
i tried to use them on bose portable speaker and they said it is not supported in my country
i can use google assistant on my phone tho
You can run the same commands on your phone too if that works for you
wait, can i connect my phone to home assistant to use voice commands??
Yes
how can i do that?
The same Google Assistant integration https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/google_assistant/
There's two options, either manually setting it up or using the cloud service which has a monthly payment
thank you, i will read about that
hi i'm looking for a device (230V/50Hz) to meter my energy consumption in my home, ideally build directly into the fuse box right after the energy meter from my electric energy supplier and the ability to push the data wireless into HA, i know im not allowed to modify things in my fuse box but i have some electricians in the family that are allowed to
any recommendations?
If we're talking off the shelf options maybe Shelly 3 EM
especially if you have three phases
I am just getting started, I have been avoiding this time sink waiting for the Betamax/VHS battle to conclude but as an outside observer it seems to be getting worse, I want to start with motion sensors, cameras, door sensors and lights, recommendations on hardware? Any good prime day sales?
The documentation on the website didnβt seem to cover what hardware to get that I could see, perhaps because it it too broad of a topic. I would prefer wired vs battery powered for low Maintinance
I am installing light fixtures so not smart bulbs
2-3 years isnβt bad
Once I install on a rasp what radios to get? Or do you just interface with an echo?
What Zigbee hardware are you using where batteries last 2 to 3 years? My Samsung and Ikea stuff averages 2 or 3 months. (This is several dozen devices purchased at different times, so not likely to be a faulty device or device batch.)
Grab a recommendation from #zigbee-archived for the radio (coordinator)
I've got Xiaomi kit that's going ages, and that's pretty standard
Konke is looking likely to be similar, and CR Smart Home looks like chewing batteries instead
As does Sonoff
Anyone have any recommendations for sliding curtain systems that work with home assistant that runs on mains? (240v australia)
Quick question to all the pro users here
Just closed on a house (US if it matters) and am looking to build my smart home starting with lights, media center, and AC.
Familiar with Alexa and Tasmota integrations but I am wondering on any big differences with Alexa vs Google when it comes to Home Assistant, any thoughts?
Big plus if I can avoid requiring any cloud services not running local
Neither of them work locally
I use these Govee lights with HA. Sometimes they want to switch to bluetooth only, but most of the time they are fine. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JKVKZX8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Google has semi-local support, but I'm not sure HA supports it yet
Amperage
I think that's the NUC I'm using too, and seems like over kill even lol
You sound like you need a challenge. Hit up snakers4 stt model on git hub and make your own voice control server, locally, and without any snooping βΊοΈ
Anyone have any energy monitoring sensor recommendations. I have no preference with brand but i am in the states if that matters.
Seems other companies have given up making zigbee bulbs?
What? lol... there's tons of companies making bulbs.
Hue, Sengled, Ikea, Ledvance, Ajax Online, Tuya, etc...
Well Hue obviously, I thought Tuya was wifi? I will look up these others
Tyua also makes Zigbee bulbs... Oh, there's also Innr which is good.
thanks
I guess its just the wifi bulbs are so popular makes zigbee hard to google serach, even seraching these brands directly shows a ton of wifi bulbs
there we go thanks
I am using wirelessTags and They pull the temperature it seems randomly. Is there some way to see all the enteties state changes in a list? I dont see any entries in the logbook
Is ths where Tasmota questions can be asked or is there a different. Trying to get the template working on a Gosund 3way switch but it does not work
Ready to use custom firmware for ESP8266 devices (including Sonoff)

Do I still need a zigbee USB stick to use the hue integration? It says it controls lights connected to the bridge, so does it control the bridge via network or the lights? https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/hue/
The Hue integration requires the Hue bridge. You can use the Hue devices with any Zigbee stick though. In that case, you wouldn't use the Hue integration at all.
Do I need the hue bridge to use the hue app and its google home integration?
Yes. Although, I've seen people say that they got the Hue app to work with the emulated-hue integration as well. I never tried it, so I can't say for certain.
Personally, if you have a decent Zigbee coordinator, I'd just forgo the Hue bridge, connect the Hue devices directly and use the HA mobile app.
But, that's me π
I'm debating it, I'd like to get things up and running quickly then fine tune some automations with HA so I'm thinkiing leveraging hue app would be easiest so I don't have to learn HA overnight. In which case I guess I can send back my HUSBZB-1 and get a hue bridge instead?
Nope. Keep the HUSBZB-1... You'll thank me later when you want to smash the Hue hub with multiple hammers and a flamethrower. π
I don't have any zwave stuff but I just got some of the lutron dimmer switch covers will need zigbee bridge to use them to control wifi lights
One day you will want some zigbee-device that doesn't run on the hue hub,
it has been foretold
lol ok
how can I get switches and lights I use HUSBZB-1 to show up in google home app?
You'll need to expose HA externally either using a reverse-proxy with something like duckdns or get nabu-casa (the super easy way to do it).
The HUSBZB-1 isn't a great Zigbee coordinator, but it's not terrible
easy way: nabu casa
slightly less easy: read some docs on how to do it for free
through HA in both cases
what would you get instead @winged knoll ?
Yup, you run the container or add-on on a server then map serial to the ip of the device-ish
Exactly. That way you can place it wherever it works best.
Anyone know of a 433 mhz keypad that I can use for my garage door? I can already snoop on 433 with RTLSDR . Need to replace my existing keypad that died due to battery leak on the board. Want something on the cheap
I have been looking for sensors that have real batteries and not buttons- and I found this but it isn't on the compatability lists - https://www.amazon.com/OWSOO-Security-Notification-Magnetic-Wireless/dp/B08GH9WHWN/ anyone tried?
I found a forum post where someone got it to work with smartthings, so prolly would work for Home Assistant
what are real batteries?
AA AAA the big boys
why is that important in a sensor?
Lower maintenance I hope.
lower maintenance by changing two batteries instead of one?
less frequently is the goal
then get Aqara sensors
type of battery is irrelevant if sensors consume more power than others
True
The only sensors I've seen that use AAA batteries (at least in the US market) are Hue motion sensors. I know there were are a few contact sensors that did as well, but I haven't seen any on the market for awhile.
Develco uses AA batteries
Oh yeah! I forgot about them... I think those are imports though, yeah? I haven't been on bangood in while.
White label, interesting
imports from denmark
Gotcha... I'll have to take a look.
Looking for a controller that can change fan direction. I see this one everywhere, lowes, wayfair, homedepot, etc but doesn't show up in integrations anyone know does it actually work or recommend something? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Fanimation-fanSync-WiFi-31-Speed-White-Handheld-Ceiling-Fan-Remote-Control/1000898704
The WiFi ones are generally not supported aside from the Sonoff ones that you flash with Tasmota. I've used these for a couple of years now: https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Hampton_Bay_99432.html
nice thanks
man thats perfect, will work with any hampton bay fan too, why do they make this stuff so hard to find?
LOL because reasons! π
Is it just me or do those look HUGE? lol
they don't have a bag of holding for those two AA batteries π
LMFAO! Well put π
I keep CR2032 and CR2450 batteries on my Amazon subscribe and save for that very reason.
but their sensors are really good... but huge...
That's something you need to build into your site... ratings π Let us all go nuts on rating our favorite devices... That'll go well, right? π
sure... that's why its not implemented... can't have too much success
Looks like Aqara door sensors are all sold out on Amazon
sign of quality π
anyone use a Dash Button ? is it easy to setup
Just don't buy noname or eBay batteries
i only buy IKEA batteries
I buy varta. Getting stable 3200mV longer than other batteries
any idea does tthat hampton bay controller work with same fans as the wifi one or is it different?
that's a good recommendation
I've had really good luck with the Celewell batteries. Typically they last me around 6-9 months with heavy usage.
I had drain on sonoff zigbee sensors since they were set to 10sec reporting. Now I set them to longer interval so last probably 2 years
probably not π
Got 1 year with 10sec
It works with different brands. I have them working with Hunter and Westinghouse fans.
which sensors exactly?
SNZB-02
my contact and temp/hum ones die after a couple months
Weird no issue here
Great, any particular standard to look for? Its DC fan?
working on it, but have to do a manual install method
Typically any fan that has a remote. The chain ones are supposedly adaptable, but the one I tried was wonky and refused to change speed.
I'm not sure if it exists a perfect sensor. Seems like it's very hot and miss on eBay sensors. Bet it's all sensors that didn't get through their qa for retail sale
There's never been a perfect sensor... at least not that I've ever seen. π¦
So is wink also just zigbee? If I see something that says it works with wink can I use it in HA as a zigbee device?
or I see I can just check here I think Im getting it π https://zigbee.blakadder.com/vendors.html
looking at the website a few of their devices were z-wave; the hub also supported a bunch of stuff, including z-wave, zigbee and bluetooth-LE.
oh nice
well, not nice in the sense that you'd need to check every device closely as to which technology it actually uses
it would be so great if something would just win lol like laser disc vs dvd
like they could all still make money and agree on a data standard
the big money is in getting that sweet sweet licensing money; so it's always going to be a deathmatch
haha
looking for rocker light switches with reliable HA integration available on Amazon. what brand/product should I choose? is there a buyer's guide?
Which country?
US
GE Embrighten switches and dimmers are good (Zigbee).
great, thank you
oh no that fan controller is actually disconinued π¦
Seriously?! Ugh... Hmmmm...
yeah that sucks looked good!
only thing with "fan" on the list here https://zigbee.blakadder.com/index.html
Might want to look into a Bond then... that's about the only other thing I can think of. You might be able to find some of the HB controllers on eBay or something.
Yeah I was checking bond out, doesn't look like it supports changing fan direction, plenty of switches if I don't need that
but for one fan you need a 10+ foot ladder so I need remote reverse
maybe I can write an integration the wifi controller
IIRC, the bond will support any function that the remote does for that fan.
if traffic isn't encrypted shouldn't be hard
True
yeah the bond remote I was looking at doesn't support reverse but maybe they make others
Can anyone assist please as this is driving me nuts. I have a SSD drive which I am trying to get to work as the main boot drive for HA. I have updated the Pi / Firmware and EEPROM to the latest release. I have installed HA using BalenaEtcher onto the SSD.
However when I boot, I get a plethora of errors. Boot order has obviously been changed from SD to USB.
If you're running HAOS see the #330990055533576204 channel
How is the SSD connected to the Pi? Are you using a Pi4? Does it boot if plugged into a USB2 port?
I am using a Pi4 and only tried the USB3 port. Will try USB2
I am 100% sure you problems are down to your USB3 adapter
There are poorly documented but known issues. Basically most vendors donβt implement the spec correctly.
further, powering an SSD from your Pi is generally discouraged
Pi4 will try and use the new mass storage driverβ¦but it wonβt work well and keeps resetting the USB stack
I have never had a problem, depends on the adapter and PSU.
it does, and lots of people grab a cell phone charger out of their junk drawer π
I prefer not to think of a Pi as a power supply π
in part because even normal, well-speced power supplies don't have deliver what they advertise, and undervoltage warnings are the first sign. Even a USB Bluetooth adapter caused problems for me
YMMV especially if you arenβt aware of the issues. Debugging power issues isnβt easy if you are running headless either.
Iβve currently got 3 usb radios and an SSD hanging out of my pi4 but Iβve been super careful.
When I ran a Pi2 I had to build a powered USB hub so things have at least improved.
Bingo, plugging it into the USB2 port I am up and rubbing. So presuming it is the adaptor that is faulty. Although I ordered one which was recommended on another forum, it looks like I may have got a βfakeβ with the JMicron chipset. This is what I ordered ELUTENG USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter Cable with Type C Adapter for 2.5" HDD or SSD 5Gbps High Speed Plug and Play Support UASP SATA I II III Hard Disk Drive USB S-ATA Converter https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XCV1W97/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1G6AK71V32PBCFYGA0YV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Any issues with leaving the SSD on the USB2 port please?
is it just me or are there no rgb z-wave bulbs out there right now?
seems like all you can get are tuya wifi trash that can't be reflashed anymore :/
apart from Shelly, Athom and Blitzwolf bulbs
Hey...is it possible to tasmotize a tuya zigbee gateway for HA. ? (Not the sonoff) I have different zigbee gateway hub model (winposse zigbee gateway) and iam unable to flash it through tasmota or esp. I need to Integrate it with HA
a tuya zigbee gateway is a very broad definition
which wifi and zigbee modules does it use?
Hello all a newbie here , I am looking to get started with ZHA on Home assistant (not a complicated setup but just temperature and motion sensors around the home). Can you please suggest a good hardware stick. I got recommendation for itead zigbee 3.0 dongle but its out of stock right now. Any alternatives for it? Many thanks in advance
Model: WGR1
then no
Then what should be the best option to connect all my tuya zigbee device to HA?
A CC2652 based stick
Where I stay I have got one from the market which is Zigbee CC2531 USB Dongle
Will that work??
it will work but its the worst option
Oh ok thanks @zealous dune.. let me search what options can I get in cc2652..
Hi, anybody here who knows a little bit about electricity? I would like to connect a sonoff basic switch to my gardenlights, but the garden lights are connected on 1 switch of a 2 way switch. Which wires should I connect to the sonoff then?
2 brown and 1 black wire
I'm not qualified to give advice on electrical lol, but you might have some luck on r/electricians!
https://www.reddit.com/r/electricians?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Also, anyone here have issues with TP-Link? My Kasa devices have been problematic lately, and right now I can't even access them
#integrations-archived would know more about integrations π
Yeah I just didn't want to crowd out the other issues and figured this was technically hardware haha
Actual hardware question, though - anyone have a recommendation for a good, budget motion sensor? I've had really good luck with aqara lately but their motion sensor looks super bulky
Question for the Class:
How much power does HA really need? I am moving to a Tiny home and trying to downsize servers etc.
Was thinking of Pi 4 w/ 8gb
and docker for multiple "servers"
Plex, HA, LDAP, etc
Pi4 will be fine for HA, at least on an SSD
For Plex too... well, Plex + Pi == π’
yeah all storage would be off loaded
you think the pi 4 is still just too slow?
bummer... maybe i can do a mini itx build HTPC
If you're not going to do any transcoding, the Pi is fine
im planning on using a i5 7th gen nuc for my home setup, mainly for HA with some camera feeds
Can anyone recommend a USB3 to SATA adaptor which definitely works with Pi 4 please. Plugging my current one into USB2 gets my HA up and running, but I would obviously like to take advantage of the faster speed.
If you're running HAOS see #330990055533576204
Is there a Z-wave USB in europe that works straight with PI4, Without plugging in a USB2 hub between them?
