I guess people do OpenTable and don't show up. Most of the OpenTable ones are now $50 no show. I guess not using OT they think people who are really gonna show up is calling. 🤣

umbral cliff
#

Do restaurants not have their own booking systems there? And all use open table?

static schooner

now they just need Google to take the calls and book the reservations too

umbral cliff

Or just make an api and skip the calls

tidal bronze

Most use OpenTable but not 100% accurate unless you see a no show fee

Howdy Ya'll. Bit of a long-question, but I'm feeling overwhelmed. I'ma long-time HomeAssistant fan, and have been using a variety of devices with it over the years (Insteon/Phillips/Ikea/Tuya/DIY), but my system is getting increasingly fragile / Sluggish. I'm moving into a new home soon and am thinking of replacing most of my smart devices and would love some input on what you all love. The things I know I want are:

  • Light Controls (Switch Replacements and Bulbs)
  • Video Doorbell
  • Outlet Switches
  • Thermostat

I'm hoping to get away from such a hodge-podge of services and find something that works well with or without HomeAssistant if I need. Z-Wave and Zigbee seems the most common, but I'm just hoping for some ideas.

I'm no stranger to making embedded devices, programming, running complex systems, but I just want reliability so my partner doesn't get upset at me when it breaks 😆

hollow glacier
#

you're gonna get different replies from different people with such a loaded uhh.. question lol

#

are you running hass on a pi?

#

will you be adding in cameras?

#

have you looked into the differences between zigbee and zwave?

#

personally i would use zwave plus s2 dimmer switches (can always upgrade bulbs to smart and turn on smart bulb mode to switches later), unifi doorbell (or pro if you want beta hardware), ecobee thermostat (or nest if you are a heathen who likes google)

fervent crest
#

I'm actually running HA on a spare desktop. Love my Pi's but they're underpowered for what I'm doing most of the time.
Haven't considered cameras tbh, but only see them as a security device.
I have looked into ZigBee/v/ZWave, and appreciate all the technical differences, but was hoping to get feedback on folks who have actually integrated them.

I realize I'm gonna get a bunch of responses, but that's the idea.

strange crag
#

are you blackmailing the bosses? lol

clear ferry
#

no, it is the land of socialism

#

State pays for me to take leave

#

that said, even in STRALIA we give our employees 6 months paid paternity \maternity leave

strange crag
#

12 months for women - not sure aboujt the blokes

clear ferry
#

we have 40 weeks 100% pay or 50 weeks 80% pay

strange crag
#

well its been a long time since I coujld have done it and back then blokes only got about 3 weeks

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

yeah, I get all of the leave because my wife is a student

#

normally I would only get 15 weeks and she gets 35 weeks

#

but then I would have used the 6 months that work offers on top of the 15 weeks

strange crag
#

well if its your first child its gonna change your lifestyle big time!

clear ferry

nope

#

second

#

😄

strange crag

you will need all those weeks to adjust

clear ferry

I did 40 weeks for the first child too

#

same pattern, 50% first year, 80% year 2 \3

umbral cliff
#

I wonder what my works policy is. Haven’t looked. Though a quick google tells me at least 18 weeks for either parent but I imagine there may be more too

tbh a 105 keyboard has just the right amount, don't need any macro keys

people use kvms still ?

strange crag

playing some games would be easier with macros

clear ferry
#

Don't think I've used one in close to a decade

sinful fable
#

tbh we don't either, crash carts are used when absolutely nessesary

strange crag
#

you would have to be in a computer room or DC to use one of those lol

sinful fable
#

normally when an ilo hasnt connected to the network

clear ferry

which is rare

#

since ilo2

sinful fable
#

dell idracs have a habit of dhcping once and setting their first address to static

yeah it was a bug for a while atleast

we had a lot of them

wtf

strange crag

I would think yoiu would want a static ip on them

clear ferry
#

I was in a DC just 3 months ago, installing 450 new nodes, no crashcart or kvm was used @strange crag

#

static ip 🤢

#

disgusting

sinful fable
#

we don't static ILOs

#

we static hosts

strange crag
#

I dont know what a crashcart is (other than a medical one lol) since I have been out of the DC for a decade and a half

sinful fable
#

Uh, a screen, keyboard and mouse on a trolley you push around

strange crag
#

then how do you find the ilo to connect to that host?

clear ferry
#

you see it based on hostname in the dhcp lease

strange crag
#

ahh fair enuff ultimation

sinful fable
#

Hostname, but really the ilo mac address is tied to the host in a database

#

and the network ports on the host connected to same device

clear ferry
#

doing shared ilo port ?

sinful fable
#

no

strange crag
#

yeah - but the ilo has a different ip to the host its connected to

sinful fable
#

oh

#

we keep ilo on seperate switches and network

good

only place I see shared is in HPC

#

it always freaks me out

our hpc cluster has separate too, but we're not similar to most hpc

433 has long range, right?

what I heard

that I like

#

dont know about the zigbee and zwave but they probably have long range too 😛

cedar chasm
#

Well z/bee/wave all have mesh components, so that adds some range

#

but in terms of raw range from the stick/hub then theoretically 433Mhz has longer range

#

cause that's how radio frequencies work

forest edge
#

433Mhz is great as long as all your stuff falls under then same freq

orchid rose
#

433 is an old standard and unless you have those devices already I wouldn't recommend them. Zigbee is the go-to these days, but for other options you should ask in #hardware-archived

clear ferry
#

Ugh 433

forest edge
#

ZigBee more expensive and the fact that most the devices are end points the range without extra spending in not as good

With that said it seems the range cover a small home rather well

not sure where to ask this...... anyone know what year they started putting neutrals in the switch boxes? i am moving to a house built in 1990 and am wondering if i am going to have issuess moving over all my zwave switches

forest edge

what country?

vast lily
#

USA

forest edge

neutral wires been around since the early 80's probably even a little before. however with that said every part of the US is diffrent in how quickly homes were either updated or used what practices

strange crag
#

other countries have had neutrals for years - itsonly murica that is behind 😉

vast lily
#

interesting, so far i am not seeing a lot of 14/3

forest edge
#

odds are a home built in the 90's will have a neautral wire but that is not a 100%

vast lily
#

at least in the exposed wire

#

actually i havent seen any 14/3 yet

forest edge
#

buy one of those plug testers and plug it into an outlet, that will tell you the quickest if it's an option

vast lily
#

well the outlets i am not worried about, those will have a neutral for sure since they are 120v

#

its the light switches i suspect dont have them

forest edge
#

well generally if one part of a home has neutral, then all the wire ran within it will be the same..

#

unless it was a rehab

vast lily
#

but in the USA before i think fairly recently, they just ran a switched hot to the switch boxes to save money and because they never thought it would be needed in the box

forest edge

like i said above, it all depends where in the USA

down south they still have archaic wiring knob and tube lol

forest edge

forest edge
#

even if the wire leading directly from the switch to the bulb doesn't have a neutral line, the switch is likely fed with a line that has it

vast lily
#

that sure would be nice

#

in my current house i had to run new wire to every switch box but it was built in 1930 lol

forest edge
#

yea

vast lily
#

the wire was in a steel casing and was copper wrapped in some kind of woven fabric and dipped in some kind of resin

forest edge
#

most homes built around the early 80's and current use the newer code standards

#

and code required a neutral

vast lily

ok cool
