Laugh emote if you want. There's a reason businesses (and federal government) have these policies in place.

What you see as a friendly gift could be seen by others as bribery.

tidal bronze

It's not that complicated and it shouldn't be.

deft pewter
#

With your postman, I'd be inclined to agree with you. You're hardly going to get anything other than good service by being friendly with your regular postie.

tidal bronze
#

Yep

deft pewter

But then where do you draw the line? You just gave an expensive gift to a federal employee... can you now do that to all federal employees?

#

You'll quickly find someone where arguably you could receive special treatment in exchange for those 'gifts'.

#

Hell... I'm a lowly software engineer in the private sector and I have to agree to strict gift/bribery policies.

#

Not that anyone loves me enough to gift me anything ๐Ÿคฃ

#

@deft pewter I am at least partly domesticated. Haven't made a mess on the floor for at least a day

last cedar
#

Precisely that

#

So, conceptual question incoming:

Dad has a i7 8700 (non k) with 16GB RAM running windows 10 pro for blue iris. Plan is to run aitool and deepstack on it.

I then got sent down the docker rabbit hole.

If I ran docker on W10, could I run a docker HA instance for their house?

Should I, or should I go seperate hardware? Perhaps get my dad to slap another 2x8GB sticks in it?

clear ferry
#

Docker and windows does not mix, especially with things that need host mode

last cedar
#

Okay, not a great idea then.

I realise now I should have run esx and had a w10 virtual machine :)

#

Or somethibg like that

clear ferry
#

You'd be better off running Linux on it, move to any docker based image processing, like doods

#

And 16GB is enough by far for a host with that purpose

#

Or if you prefer blue iris for some reason, run a KVM instance with BI

last cedar
#

Problem is that this is back in england, and I can't sort that until I am over there next time.

I do like BI very much :)

#

Why is docker on windows 10 so bad (bear in mind I have never dockered :P)

hoary lodge
#

Docker on windows is basically linux in a virtual machine

#

Docker on linux natively allows passthrough of sound devices, or quicksync/nvenc to the containers (useful if running a plex container for example). As far as I know this isn't possible (yet??) on windows

last cedar
#

It wouldn't need to passthrough stuff.

The other side of it is though, I don't necessarily need to have HA on the same machine either, so I can probably forgoe docker and just let that do camera stuff

last cedar
#

I don't know how much of a problem the known bugs are in reality, but they seem fairly large. Probably better to go a different direction :)

clear ferry
#

At best it is a half baked solution

last cedar
#

Mmm

#

Obviously now I need a solution to work around the problem I have created :)

clear ferry
#

#

clear ferry
#

This is why you need to install a jumpstation at your folks

#

And have BMC on servers

#

๐Ÿ˜‚

last cedar
#

Sounds overkill if you are suggesting it... But I will bite.

What is jumpstation :P

clear ferry
#

Any machine who purpose is just to be a landing station for outside connections to jump into the other network

#

Without using vpns or site to site links

#

Quite often seen in academia networks or in industrial IT

#

I should order one of these

#

Instead of the usb one

last cedar
#

@clear ferry I knew it would be overkill

๐Ÿ˜‚

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Neat, didn't realize they made a PCIe card

clear ferry
#

Note, dual tpu

#

I ordered one and a m2-pcie adapter from AliExpress

#

Let's see how that goes

subtle pasture
#

Should work fine, M-keyed M.2 slots are just PCIe 4x slots

#

Specs say this only uses 1x, though...

clear ferry
#

Yep

#

The adapter I bought is pci1x

subtle pasture
#

Heh

clear ferry
#

So that should be fine

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, you can install 1x cards in any-length PCIe slot

clear ferry
#

Just going to attach some heat sinks and add a fan for good luck

subtle pasture
#

Wait.. ๐Ÿ‘€

Two PCIe Gen2 x1

#

I hope it doesn't require bifurcation to see both TPUs...

last cedar
#

Atx likes solving problems he creates though :)

forest edge
#

what you paid for both of those you could have just got the coral dongle lol

clear ferry
#

Pssh, usb is for kids

clear ferry
forest edge
#

so is HP so it works puuuurrrrfffect

subtle pasture
#

I don't see a PLX chip on that card, so it may actually try to show up as two independent PCIe 1x devices

#

If that's the case, the slot will need to support bifurcation, otherwise you'll only see the first device

#

Also, if you slot it into a PCIe adapter card that's physically 1x, the second TPU's lanes wouldn't be connected at all, and it'd never show up

#

@clear ferry Mind linking the adapter you went with? ๐Ÿ˜…

clear ferry
#

Cheapest I found ๐Ÿ˜‚

forest edge
#

the words cheap and chinese is a very dangerous duo lol

subtle pasture
#

I have the sneaking suspicion that only the first TPU is going to show up...

forest edge
#

i doubt it would even make it into a computer to begin with

#

it's gonna sit on that desk in his garage along with all the other clutter

#

it will be in his next picture of trying to show us something we all can't spot

clear ferry
#

Even with only the first one showing up it will get me up and running and is a better solution than the usb one for my needs

#

And I can research finding another adapter

subtle pasture
#

The m.2 module you linked is E-key, which is supposed to require "two 1x lanes" be wired to the slot. That adapter card only has one 1x lane

#

I usually only see M-Key and M+B-Key, had to look up wtf E-key was...

forest edge
#

by the time he finds an adapter that actually works he could have bought two dongles lol

subtle pasture
#

I'm not actually finding any PCIe adapter cards for E-key that enable both PCIe lanes

#

Probably because that would require a PLX chip for most motherboards to support (which isn't cheap to add to the adapter)

#

Most of these adapters are so cheap that they require a connection to a USB header on the motherboard, rather than include a USB controller of their own (E-Key devices sometimes require USB be available on the slot)

forest edge
#

|| get the dongle ya goober ||

clear ferry
#

With the price of the dual one I had no reason to buy a single one though, and I can reuse the dual capabilities down the line probably

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, this dual-TPU card seems like something you buy when you already happen to have a device that has a full-capability E-key slot onboard

#

Also, thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn about E-key M.2 slots. They're... weird...

#

That particular type of M.2 slot is supposed to provide USB 2.0, I2C, SDIO, UART, and PCM, in addition to the two PCIe 1x lanes

clear ferry
#

I like to poke holes in peoples heads

subtle pasture
#

I can see why fully featured adapter cards don't really exist, it basically has to be part of the motherboard

clear ferry
#

It's what makes my job fun

#

Too

#

There is a b+m tpu too

#

Might end up ordering one of those too

Do any of you use your HA whilst away from home to just pop in and monitor stuff?

I am thinking that light control, for example, is pretty useless whilst away from home, but checking stuff like temperatures and humidities would be useful

clever mortar
#

Well, that's likely down to power draw

#

I'd bet that the Home Assistant OS package draws more power than just an OS ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Well, the problem is "3A" may be something other than 3A

#

A lot of the USB "power supplies" require negotiation of a non-standard protocol

hushed basalt
#

Always always always use the official pi adapter's

cinder heart
#

Is the rpi doing active USB power negotiation at all? I thought it just was hardwired to the V+ and it blindly assumes sufficient current from the PSU

clever mortar
#

But many power supplies only send 0.5A or 1A unless otherwise negotiated

cinder heart
#

Yes, 0.5A, that's the standard, and then there is "negotiation" through pull up values if beyond that

clear ferry
#

Or just use proper servers with proper power supplies

cinder heart
#

I just glanced at the rpi schematics on the micro USB variants. They have no connection to the data pins on the power input, just V+ and GND, so there is no negotation on this. You have to supply a PSU that delivers what the rpi needs, otherwise you risk brownout

#

rpi4 uses USB-C, so that's a different ball game with the PD negotation. The good thing here is that the rpi can know if it has an inferior supply connected.

clever mortar
#

Now I just need a sensibly priced mult-port USB-C power supply and I can upgrade my Pi farm

deft pewter
#

There's a multi-port power supply with 200 outputs? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

cinder heart
#

Darn. I had been using binfmt and docker to create a rpi container that could build binaries for running on the rpi. But it doesn't work no more for the older rpis, because for some unknown reason (qemu?) set the arch to armv7l, while the older needs armv6l.

light trout
#

Use buildx instead

cinder heart
#

Not sure if that will help, buildx is also using qemu

light trout
#

Sure, but just define linux/arm/v6 as the platform

cinder heart
#

Thanks. Interesting. I didn't know you could specify sub arch like this. I checked out the buildx sources to see how they do it, and then I see that the arm/v6 is armel, which I not what I want I think. rpi runs on the same image on newer rpis as well as old, and this is armhf, so I think I do want armhf. Binaries remain the same. My reason for this is that python wheels contains the arch, so it'll refuse to install armv7l wheels on older rpis, where it expects armv6l

light trout
#

arm is a shitshow

cinder heart
#

Actually this one think is on python ๐Ÿ˜„ Because everything ABI-wise is armhf

light trout
#

It's great in usage, but deside on 1 type... (Or 2 if you need to differ 32/64), thanks.

cinder heart
#

If any comfort to it, its getting better. Much better. Now that we are getting more and more binary distros (and docker images) the chip vendors have an incentive to keep the custom arm core customizations to a minimum. 10 years ago it was a mess because there were far too little mainstream traction on arm yet. Every SoC did it their own way and little was binary compatible.

I've been considering moving from an older HP Procurve Server to a Pi4 w/ ESXi. My only concern is storage, I don't like the idea of relying on SD cards or flash drives so I would have to see what the best way to add at least 2 SSDs in Raid 1 would be. I have a stack of sata SSDs sitting in the corner unused. Haven't even looked into it yet but I assume I can connect those up one way or another, USB if I have to.

That aside, I would like some real world use feedback on how well ESXi itself runs on the Pi. Other than Veeam, which I could honestly just do without entirely as its a bit overkill for my needs, I could easily run everything I need on 1 Pi4.

With the other option being Raspbian and a bunch of docker containers which wouldn't be terrible either. I'm just accustomed to working with ESXi hosts all day for work that it's nice to mirror that at home.

I have a QNAP NAS already and an HP ProCurve for all my various projects. The idea here is to reduce footprint and power consumption as none of what I am running really needs to be on true server hardware. I'm onboard with @forest edge here.

slow zenith
#

After some actual investigation into ESXi-Arm, I'm realizing that I might as well keep it on the Proliant server (I've been calling it ProCurve but that's the HP switch line) as I use it as a testbed for a lot of Windows based stuff so the Proliant has to stay regardless.

Just one of those things you hear about and think, "oh that's neat, let me find a reason to use that" until you spend 10 minutes actually thinking about it

It is only a matter of time before there is an esx for the new mac mini

subtle pasture
#

There any good options for dual NICs on the NUC yet?

#

That's the one thing that keeps me from recommending them for heavier virtualization workloads

#

Dual 2.5G NICs... better, but I was hoping to see 10G

#

If you wanted to do a traditional HA cluster (3 compute nodes and 2 storage nodes) you really need some bandwidth for the compute nodes to communicate with the shared storage

#

Or if you want to run converged storage (chuck an NVMe drive in every NUC and run vSAN) you need gobs of bandwidth to keep the network RAID performing well

#

3 NUCs in a cluster is the bare minimum you need to provide HA. lol

But networking is always an issue, because its been hard to get more than the built-in 1gbps NIC working

My NAS and VM/Container box have LACP to my switch but there is no point to the PFSense since the WAN is the bottleneck heh

Or maybe even an awkward lane change in the middle or an already blossoming relationship?

Or just a random discord post with nothing to do with any of the other raccoons in this channel?

Cause, there is really only one true, awesome raccoon in this channel.

I love how well Home Assistant manages the whole Docker situation, with the whole add-ons thing. But it feels a bit silly to install Home Assistant just to manage a bunch of containers. Are there any similar systems out there that operate a supervisor-type-thing that makes installing and configuring containers a 'tried and tested' affair?
