ankha_shocked What's this?????

The time has come, the server revamp is here!!

tl;dr - This Sunday, September 15th, the server will be shutting down for the day (Pacific time) as I make massive changes to this server! rooScreaming

Don't panic!

There are big changes coming, but I feel like you all will be excited to see what is coming. What are the biggest changes you will see? (Besides this shiny new channel...)

  • The developer channels will be locked behind a role and no longer accessible to everyone. This is to reduce people accidentally wandering into that space for support. If you are a developer, you will need to self-select the role. I'll leave instructions on how to do this when the transition happens.
  • The support channels are being reduced and converted into forum channels! You won't lose context from the other channels, though - all of those are being moved to #579679277184712723 where you can still search them.
  • MOAR COMMUNITY CHANNELS. Not only an off-topic channel, but an entire section designed to share your interests not related to Home Assistant!

There is a lot more than that, but I'll save the explanations for when I'm done with the changes. 😌 Can't wait to show you all what I have been working on! ablobbouncefast

Almost time to panic!

Tomorrow, September 15th at 10am Pacific time (1pm Eastern, 17:00 UTC), I will be locking down the server to be Read Only until my changes are completed. There will be an announcement when that begins.
-# I am sure someone will miss it anyway.

Once I am finished (no, I do not know how long it will take yet GrimacingFluent), I will once again post in here with a link to our Discourse forums where I will explain all the changes.

-# Okay, you can panic now. BongoCatEyes

IT BEGINS

Starting as soon as I hit send on this message, channels will begin to lock down to read only. I am dropping messages in each channel that will redirect conversations post-server updates or asking for patience as I make these changes.
-# Better get your shitposting in quick, y’all. :hehe:

I still do not know how long this will take, but I will post another message in here once things are complete, directing y’all to our Discourse forums for the full details, and letting you know how you can provide me feedback or report issues regarding the transition.

This has been a long time coming, I hope y’all really enjoy these changes. 😌 Thanks for your patience as I update things!

IT'S DONE! agoogletada

I will begin the process of opening up the server channels here shortly - starting first with the private channels, then the community and support channels. Once that is done, I can activate the onboarding experience.

You can read the full details of the change here, but also come drop by #the-water-cooler when it unlocks and have a chat! Don't forget to stop by the #rules channel - they've been updated!

Before I get started, I want to celebrate @obtuse zealot being promoted to the <@&330946878646517761> team!! πŸ₯³ He's been an amazing asset to our Star Fighters Crows, and I'm stoked he's agreed to take on this new challenge.

Thanks for everyone's patience! Even with some help, this took me 6 hours to complete. RelievedFluent
-# If you have a special role, please let me know if you don't have permissions you used to have - I will work to get those sorted out.

If you are a developer who can no longer find the Developer category, head to id:customize and select I want to contribute dev skills to Home Assistant. This will assign you the role to have access to that category again. BongoCatEyes

Community members are understandably missing the General support channel for regular chit chat - believe me when I say this was expected and I understand where you are coming from.

In order for the Support category to work as forum, there cannot be any general channels. This is why I made the off-topic channels more accessible and varied. People who have one-off questions are very often specific in what they are looking for, and a thread in the support channels is appropriate here. This helps reduce the amount of times you ask something and chat just carries on without acknowledging you.

If you want to just chat with people, #the-water-cooler is your space - feel free to talk about HA projects you're excited about there, or post them in #1284960456880029707. If your question is specific to a channel in the #360726982251642880 category, though, please post a thread in the appropriate channel with your ask - no matter how big or small the question is.

Mods will lock down "general" threads made in the Support channels and reference this post moving forward. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this new channel structure. πŸ™

Hey, friends! I have a new #461217130071851008 channel created for those of you who hung out in hardware related channels or the now-archived general support chat! agoogletada

#the-workshop is the new space where you can talk about all things hardware. Kits you're building, devices and cameras you're working with, and protocols you are interested in (for example, Zigbee and Z-Wave fans) are welcomed conversations there. SunglassesFluent

Remember to keep support requests in the appropriate #1284966353798697001 or #1284966617670881350 channels, and please respect if you are asked to move your conversation over to one of them. πŸ™

There have been a few updates to the support and community categories this week

  • #community-updates posts will now be published in #the-water-cooler for better visibility.
  • All of the START HERE threads in the support category have updated instructions with how to search the contents of forum threads.
  • #find-support's formatting has been updated to be less of a wall of text.
  • #1284965172053807145' START HERE thread has an updated Discourse bullet with steps on how to use your search engine to search our community forums.
  • #1284980040940912641 has adopted the Node-RED tag from the #1284966617670881350 channel. Feel encouraged to point people in that direction for help with Node-RED issues.
  • #1284966439702499400 has a new tag - Account. This is for people who need help with account issues unrelated to Billing, like creating one or changing emails.
  • #1284966915055288530 has a few new tags - Intents, openWakeWord, Piper, Whisper, and Wyoming. These will help people identify if they are having issues with language intents and be more specific with integrations or add-ons they need help with. <@&1257026624248090734>s now have permissions to edit posts in this channel so they can mark threads βœ… Resolved. Lastly, some of the resources in the Post Guidelines for this channel have been cleaned up and updated.

I have been having discussions with the community in https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1285154411114532935 . There is a plan to rename the related-tech channel to open-home-protocols, but this requires a few things to be shifted out of that channel. Current thought is merging integrations and add-ons, while creating a database channel. Please leave your thoughts in that thread if you have any!

Have a great weekend, y'all! I'll be working on more improvements next week and will continue to keep you updated on what changes are made. ankha_smile

Update for Node-RED users

The Node-RED tag has been removed from the #1284966617670881350 channel.
But do not fear - it already got a new home.
Node-RED related support requests can be posted in #1284980040940912641 with the "Node-RED" tag.

We're deeply saddened to hear that @winged yarrow, a prominent script developer who made running Home Assistant on Proxmox much easier, had passed away earlier this week. We wish his family all the strength as they process this loss. ❀️

From our families to yours, happy new year! 🎊

We're grateful πŸ™πŸ» for each and every one of you who contributed to and supported us through 2024 - we've had too many milestones to name, it's been a busy year. 😌

Here's to 2025 - whatever it may bring! πŸ₯‚

Today we have opened up the #1325926382575816725 channel! agoogletada This channel is similar to the Social category on our community forums. We'll let the community know here what industry events we will be at and where the meetups will be held. We've already got 2 lined up for January and February!

You may spot that this channel is in the Community category and not announcements. This channel is not only for those of us employed by Nabu Casa to post meetups (with the Official tag), we encourage the community to form your own, too! Please use the Community tag with your post so those attending know it's a community meetup - a sign up form is not required but you may find it easier to organize things with one. πŸ˜‰

Feel free to ask any questions about this in #the-water-cooler! 😊

We've noticed an uptick in community members receiving DMs from other server members asking if "you been spamming links lately?" - these are phishing attempts, do not engage with these accounts.

It is against the server rules (Rule 6) to send unsolicited DMs to community members unless you are reporting a rule violation directly to the moderators. If you receive a message similar to this example below, please message a <@&330946878646517761> with a screenshot and their username so we can ban them from the server. We also highly suggest you report the account to Discord by pressing the big red Report Spam button in the DM.

Hi friends! You may have noticed some new threads pop up in the Support category that reference inaccessible channels.

Do not panic.

-# or do, I'm not your boss
Improvements based on feedback from the server changes are being implemented throughout this week. I'll have another post that explains it all once the changes have been finalized! Until then, if you have any questions, feel free to ask in https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1285154411114532935 ! BlobBlushing

# formal solar Hi friends! You may have noticed some new threads pop up in the Support category...

Server updates are complete!

That's not to say the server won't be updated in the future, however the bulk of changes to improve the flow and information of this server based on feedback from the changes in September have been made. Clappy

What's changed?

πŸ“‘ New Resource category

That's the most of it! Got more feedback or a question about something I maybe didn't mention? You know I want to hear it - head to #1351302817188417577 to let me know how you feel, for better or worse! 🫰🏻

Oh hi blobwave

We’re proposing to stop supporting two installation methods officially:

  • Home Assistant Core (running directly in a Python environment)
  • Home Assistant Supervised (running the full stack on your own operating system)

Additionally, we’re planning to discontinue official support for two older architectures:

  • i386 (32-bit x86)
  • armhf (32-bit ARM hard float)

Want to share thoughts before it’s official? Read more about it and let us know πŸ‘‡

Our friends who work on Music Assistant are looking for some insights to help inform them of further development efforts. They've created a mini-survey to gather those whether you use Music Assistant on its own or with Home Assistant.

It'd be appreciated if you spent a few minutes to let them know how you use Music Assistant by taking the survey here! blobthanks

PSA

Due to hitting the maximum number of participants in the "unsure where to post?" thread and how annoying it is to kick people from a thread who have been helped, it has been archived in favor of the new #find-a-channel Resource channel.

Additionally, the links in #find-support have been updated to be direct URLs rather than links to the description threads, hopefully reducing the amount of times the links change to "unknown". CasitaGrateful

πŸ“£ We've created a survey to learn more about your current hardware setup and its challenges regarding Home Assistant. πŸ‘€

We're continuing our efforts to build in the open. πŸ‘πŸΌ Following last week's opening up of #1346914401508392980, the Matter team shared that they will be hosting a monthly Matter Community Sync. πŸŽ‰ This is open to everyone who is interested in the development of Matter within Home Assistant, the matter.js project, and the new matter.js based Server we are building. Check out the announcement message in the project thread for more details on the sync. 😌

This is just the beginning, though. We're also using this as a way to see if this format would work for the other Open Home Foundation projects. We'll keep you updated on how this evolves over time. 😎

Introducing the new πŸ‘‚πŸ» β€” Feedback category! agoogletada

This is the space where channels will be added when we need feedback from you - the community - on new, major additions to Home Assistant, at the earliest stages possible. You can find this category between the πŸ› οΈ β€” Support and ✨ β€” Community categories.

Check out #1461120418944385096 for the intent of the #1461119057079304315 channel. Coming with this is the #new-matter-server channel - check the pinned message to learn how you can get involved in Phase 1 testing of the new Matter Server! Clappy

Last but certainly not least, the #beta channel has found its new home under this category. Living under the Support category made a lot of sense for a while, but beta testing is never about receiving support - it's about getting feedback from you all about the functionality and stability of the incoming changes to Home Assistant. The latest message in the channel explains the move in a few more details. πŸ‘Œ

FEEDBACK DOESN'T EQUAL FEATURE REQUESTS
Please continue to leave Feature Requests on our GitHub Discussions.

As always, ping @formal solar in #the-water-cooler if you have any questions around any of these changes. 😌

We've updated the references in this server of add-ons to apps. If anything has been missed, please tag @formal solar or a Mod in #the-water-cooler so they can address it. πŸ™

This one is a monthly meeting for Danish community members to hang out and chat the Thursday after release day. Not in Denmark or don't speak Danish? Don't worry! The host of the event says all are welcome (though you may not understand what's being said at first πŸ˜…).

Want to do something similar for your region or country? Post in #1469048177960419329 so you can chat more with Missy about getting your own setup. ankha_heart

If you need support that isn't related to the beta for OTBR, please open a support thread in either #1284966582375813201 or #1284966617670881350 (depending on what your specific issue is). πŸ™
