I do remember that it was $x000 when you bought the card and $x000+yyyy if you bought it later, but that it was a one-time fee

#

and a lot of folks were pissed because it apparently didn't transfer to a new owner

#

like somebody bought the feature that wasn't yet active, sold the car, and the new owner didn't get it

forest edge
#

yea I did see something about buying what I guess now was a lifetime thing for like 10k

or something

static schooner

I do amuse myself periodically by turning on lane guidance and adaptive cruise control and let my car take over for a bit, but I have all of that off most of the time

good thing the world has plenty of suckers like @clear ferry to buy this crap and help hopefully drive costs down for future people

static schooner
#

My impression of what my car can do is drive like a crappy driver

#

too-fast acceleration, too abrupt braking, steering is too "digital"

#

I don't have self-parking, but see the same thing in my coworkers BMW that does.

forest edge
#

the subaru eyesight or whatever they call it that helps with lane assist and object collision always makes my girl jump when she comes around a specific corner on the way home and it thinks she's going to ram someone's mailbox on the corner

static schooner
#

The one significant "new" feature that I like is pre-collision detection. I've had the car stop itself in a few cases where I otherwise would have hit something

#

some dufus ran behind my car as I was backing out of a space and my car slammed on the brakes

forest edge

oh yea, that's been around for a bit on the rear of vehicles but I think it's becomign standard for the front now too

forest edge

yea that would be nice. maybe box trailers now have that camera option

#

but my truck dosen't even have a touch screen and sure ain't going aftermarket with wires lol

Got a new workbench for my garage, and in process of gutting garage and repainting walls and ceiling. What's your opinion on tool organizing? What would you put in the 4 drawers, what on the pegboards, and what inside a random orange cabinet? Lol. Also have 6 cabinets on another wall that are mostly empty.

Previously I had just about everything on peg boards. But want to utilize the drawers, just don't know what to put on them. I also have two other small metal tool chests with drawers (not pictured).

I'd prefer to organize everything in a way that makes sense to whatever type of project I'm working on. Woodworking, welding, soldering, plumbing, electrical, painting, etc. I have just about every tool imaginable. Just don't know where to start with organizing it all in a way that makes sense.

Hi lads, I have no idea where to ask this so I figured i'd try it here first. I'm currently running a little home server and I would like some of your insights for back up best practices. The setup is: ESXI 6.7 Free on the little server, runs 3x VM -> HA, Pi-Hole and Linux.

Linux runs Docker with 3 containers. Maria and InfluxDB and UniFi controller.

HA is backed up to Google Drive
Pi-Hole is irrelevant for backups
Docker itself is not backed up
UniFi is backing up via rclone to google + cronjob

Before I continue, I feel like I am going to make this into a huge mess. Ideally I'd have all VMs backed up so I can just spin them up in another ESXi. Would a backup solution for just VM cover all data? Or do I also backup every individual container/VM locally on them for their data?

#

All storage available in-house is a 4TB SMB share, but i'm prepared to purchase extra hardware to facilitate cleaner/sturdier backups. I do not like the idea of purchasing a VMWare Essentials license for 600 euros to unlock the backup API.

#

If i am totally in the wrong place here, where would this question fit? (a subreddit probably, but it's a combined mess of different systems)

tidal bronze
#

You only need to backup the VM. I personally use synology with esxi. Comes with active backup and does daily backups of all the vm's. It's a click and go solution. Snapshots and instant spin up of a backup on synology makes it even better.

meager flume
tidal bronze
#

I run esxi on NUCs. Synology units are for backups, NFS and replication.

#

Yes if you pull a backup to synology it backs up everything. You don't need to mess with backing up individual items using rclone etc. Just set it and forget it solution.

meager flume
#

Sounds like you've got a proper setup, my only issue being that my ESXi 6.7 has locked the backup api behind a paywall

#

Contemplating whether it's worth the investment to just pay for it, or switch to Hyper-V/Proxmox entirely

tidal bronze
#

Synology active backup supports the free esxi.

meager flume
#

Wow.

#

Ok, this is going to be so much easier than I thought

tidal bronze
#

You only have to enable SSH on free version and Synology will take care of the rest.

#

You will not even think about backups if you take that route. 😀

meager flume
#

Out of curiosity, what Syno do you use?

tidal bronze
#

I run 2 x 1019 and a 916 i think.

meager flume
#

I like messing around a lot, but when i was setting up the rclone stuff today for just a single container I started doubting my methods a lot

#

Cheers man, i've been thinking about Synology for a long time but this just made both the backups and the contemplating a lot easier

tidal bronze
#

Just be mindful of how you will backup the synology. I have used them for over a decade and never failed on me but you know, Best be safe.

meager flume
#

I guess i'll just run SHR with single drive redundancy and pay for a backup to Backblaze or something

#

Restoring that is a PITA but so is backing up a Synology to another location depending on the size it grows to

tidal bronze
#

Or get a slower used one on ebay run replication.

#

Don't need to spend anything monthly.

meager flume
#

Or i guess just hyper backup to a local usb drive

tidal bronze
#

Local USB is not a great solution. I have 3 at home and 2 in different states at friends garages running replication. 😀

meager flume
#

Deep down I know you're right

#

How much data is on your main Synology that you actually need to have backed up?

tidal bronze
#

Let me check.

meager flume
#

And did you just setup a VPN tunnel to your friends?

tidal bronze
#

Each with 24TB

#

Yes site to site. I hold their backups as well.

meager flume
#

Oh man you're pushing a lot more data than I would, for now at least

#

I might go your route because it allows me to scale

tidal bronze
#

Yep and no BB dues monthly. 😆

meager flume
#

Recently all my home server projects have gotten very stable, if I add this backup solution, then what do I tinker with in my spare time?! 😂

tidal bronze
#

Lol. If you have to tinker then something is not right.

meager flume
#

I do enjoy the tinkering though, but this solution is too easy to ignore

tidal bronze
#

I would rather listen to music than tinker in my spare time. Although I used to and thought that was cutting edge. Never again. If you have to interact daily with home automation or anything tech, at home, there's something seriously missing on the automation part. 😀

meager flume
#

Oh no, the home automation tinkering has been long gone. It just works now and only play around with it if I want to add some new gimmick

#

When i initially started it wasn't smooth sailing though, but that's what you get for running all your stuff on a Pi3 because some dude on a forum said it would be fine

tidal bronze
#

I started home automation more then 20 years ago. So know a thing or two about tinkering.

meager flume
#

Everything I write or add now is built with my girlfriend having to interact with it in mind

#

Ah yeah you've been around the block!

tidal bronze
#

Yep started with X10. Now no UI no TTS, no notifications I don't want to see anything or hear anything. Unless something critical lol.

meager flume
#

UI/TTS seemed like a great thing in theory, practice taught me it was horrible. I'm with you. The only time HA talks to me is when I need to take out the garbage cans or replace TRV batteries

#

I'm guessing you use nodered?

tidal bronze
#

Use nodered for other things but not HA. My only notifications are BBQ and water leak via telegram. Even then on silent. Lol.

meager flume
#

You just reminded me I still need to do water leaks and move from the notify service over to Telegram...

tidal bronze
#

I used to have audible telegram and TTS for water leak. Added a zwave master shut-off valve and closed that loop. So no more TTS for leaks

I'd take a cleaner setup any day of the week, but I wasn't too keen on the idea of having to remodel the house

And I live in an in between house (is that the term? I dont know honestly) so mini splits is pretty much the only viable solution as I can only mount the outside unit on my roof

That being said, ever since having it installed I can't ever go back to sleeping without A/C again
