Im having png issues
Aww, it's lovely
I volunteer Polp, who said he's going to practice vector, but I have yet to see.
The intent is to make that into a vector, not to remove the transparent background
Why would you though, when bluwu only needs to convert that to png and discord doesn't support vector anyway
To get some practice in

😦
I'll give it a go, although I'm not sure I like the way the yarn is done in that,
But what I'm thinking of wouldn't make for a good emote maybe
It's very painted on, yeah. Wouldn't translate super well into vector, but you could give it your own touch
yeah generally you want to keep to the maximum resolution size
Kann ich erst morgen schauen, aber es geht eigentlich alles, solange es maximal 256kb hat!
Downscale it yourself stupidman. 😤
don't call blu stupidman
Oh I'd never. Bulli on the other hand is definitely a huge stupidman.
hahaha
Hell no
Cause I don't get paid for that 😤
do you get paid to be a stupidman? 🤔
Did you draw this?
Yup
Nice. Hopefully you were able to get the background to transparent.
Hello I have an idea why we are not starting a discovery stage then we can practise our speaking in deutsch , even those who are an expert in this language can teach us in there
Okay, can you explain the reason why you need a stage instead of a voice channel?
Voice chats are small group and its not good for starters and even they are not focused on specific topic
But in discovery can be like a free discussion everyone can share their ideas they can listen more
What do you mean by "small groups"? Most of our voice channels have no capacity limit.
The stage channels also need people to moderate them. We can't get someone to moderate 24/7.
👍👍👍
Have you seen another servers use stages for this? Was it effective
But its good for your channel because you will be the first community which start a discovery for learning german languages
So many people are finding these kind of channels
Okay, we can consider it.
I could see this being useful for like a disscussion type session, where someone leads a small speaking group
Yes, we could consider it for some events.
👍👍
Emphasis on small with 50 people it wont work so good
Little by little if you start these session several times so many people will join your channel because its usefull for them
A big issue with stages rn is that you cant screen share
Feel free to share if you have any ideas for an event that would work in this format
Gimme a transparent bg version if you wanna make this a suggestion as well (I love it btw)

Same for these @craggy crater
I could ask around, in case you need help with that
Make it transparent yourself.
We talked about this 👀 I don't know how to do that
Ich mach es noch einmal neu
Es kann ein bisschen warten
Show me how
Oki :3
Sorry, hab erst jetzt dran gedacht
Alright~
@nimble pebble you forgot this one
No, it's there

@nimble pebble wie oft darf man ein Emoji vorschlagen wenn es beim ersten Mal nicht genügend Stimmen erzielt?
Darüber hab ich noch gar nicht nachgedacht
Mein Vorschlag hat bei einer Stimme verloren, echt schade
Mach mal einfach nochmal, sobald dir danach ist
und ansonsten muss ich mal überlegen, wie wir das handlen mögen
Jeder Monat bis Sieg
Do you guys want these emotes to be added to the server?

I guess I wasn't very clear here. Every 2nd week I put the emotes that were suggested here into #archived-emote-suggestions @dark radish :D
But I'll take this as suggestions and put those there the next time then

YESSSS
i love it, lol

Emote suggestion
Lmfao what

Emote suggestion:
I like the recent channel rearrangement/renaming!

Oops, I thought this was #archived-culture-study-visa
@fathom vector hello mr mod i have encountered a problem
no
ok
ehehe oke
Hello,
I hope you're well.
I'm sorry to bother but I'd like to sign up for the GLaD Study Group, I didn't get the chance to fill in the form.
Thank you.
ah dang gotta go, take care!
@gaunt bridge I just realised that A grammar lessons will start 2h later than the kick off was yesterday
Kick off was at 23h which was doable, but lessons would start at 1am then last 2-3h
Germany timezone
Is there any chance that you hold lessons earlier, like it was yesterday?
Also, general suggestion, I think it's safe to assume that many people who just came in Germany want to learn language, so I think in general it would be nice to cater to DACH timezone when doing mass stuff
Or at least do the poll?
Like, I know there's hard to get ideal time for everyone, but at least don't hit those wee hours of 1-6 am for starting something
Or have two sessions for the same topic? I think that'd be ideal solution :)
Well keep in mind that Base is from australia and these times already cater to us Europeans as much as possible
Last time we had 2 slots for the beginner sessions with 2 different Session Holders, but it really depends on who is available and up for actually putting in the effort of organising, preparing and holding them, so sadly it's not as easy to just turn the times around
The sessions calendar can always change though, and maybe someone will be available to hold sessions at a different time in a week or so
@chrome shadow pity
Yeah, last time I joined for dach times, but we stopped at around 7th lesson and never finished, so I hoped to finish it this time, but I'm trying to put my sleeping schedule in order, having lessons 1-4 am won't help with that 😂
I just wanted to point that out to @gaunt bridge in case he can move it, since kick off was at much more convenient 23h :)
But I guess from study groups you can see the timezones distribution at least for those interested in groups so it could be that not many from dach zones are there now...
I ain't in groups, not my thing :)
but I'm trying to put my sleeping schedule in order, having lessons 1-4 am won't help with that
@chrome valley Yeah, that's basically my issue with trying to run the sessions as well, lol. Ideal time for most people is in the 1-4am time period for me.
I appreciate the suggestions though.
The time that I did the Welcome Night was 7am for me, while the session time I chose for the rest of the weeks is 9am for me.
I could try to do 7am, but I'm worried that I can't keep that up for 2 whole months.
Because it means waking up 5 or 6am.
I could change it to 3pm my time, which is 7am for Germany and 10pm-2am for the US.
There are three other people who are considering running them, who are in different time zones. They haven't committed to dates/times yet though.
I have a suggestion. Maybe you could open a voice channel for beginners? I tried to join a voice channel last night but the German there was too hard for me to understand. I want to practice speaking because I am learning German by myself irl 😀
Practice Room channels are the beginner-friendly channels.
We usually prefer not to name things "beginner" because then it makes it seem like only beginners can join. Which is a problem, because it's hard for beginners to learn if they're only talking with other beginners.
On the subject earlier I’m intending to run sessions for complete beginners on Tuesday evenings (I’m in UTC+1) starting from around the 27th, both to serve people in European time zones and to help the people who join the server after the other courses are already started and find it harder to join in. They will be complete beginner sessions though, starting from absolutely nothing, teaching easy vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, pronunciation, etc with a focus on eventually actually applying what knowledge we’ve learned in going over very easy texts, so that people can start getting an idea of what German should sound like. My aim is to try and help people to get to a point where they know how to continue on themselves or can join the other not beginner sections. I am intending to give homework to work on as well, probably in the form of mini stories to listen to or anki word lists, on the basis that if I want to achieve what I hope to, there isn’t enough time in 1h a week. I’ll have to see how the first few sessions go though to see how that turns out and to adjust my plans accordingly. I’m still fairly early on in my German career myself: understanding quite a lot, but still not so good at the outputting and not knowing all the later grammar from A1. I’m probably going to have a native speaker with me for most of the sessions to provide additional pronunciation help and so on, with him providing more help if he has the time. Having said that, like all session holders I’ll be volunteering my time and I have a life outside, so I can’t absolutely guarantee that time or how long I’ll be able to run sessions for depending on outside commitments.
DJUNGELSKOG has my vote.
round two lesgo
Hello everyone!
Im on the hunt for a new book to read in the reading sessions.
I am about doing another advanced, only German type session, so any level of literature is good. 1️⃣
Or alternatively, we can read a series of short stories before starting a new book, this can be the advanced or beginner type lesson (paraphrase in german or translate in English) 2️⃣
Vote below for the format youre more interested in.
1️⃣ books
Die Verwandlung - Franz Kafka
Der Vorleser - Bernard Schlink
Die Unendliche Geschichte - Michael Ende
Tintenherz - Cornelia Funke
Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen - J.K. Rowling (Klaus Frit Übersetzung)
Eine Reihe Betrüblicher Ereignisse - Lemony Snicket
2️⃣ Short stories
Schachnovelle - Stefan Zweig
Grimms Märchen - Gebrüder Grimm
In der Strafkolonie - Franz Kafka
Collecting further book suggestions below ⬇️
Furthermore, can you vote on a time please
1️⃣ Saturday: 21:00 UTC
2️⃣ Sunday: 12:00 UTC
Open for time suggestions too, but please note my timezone is Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)
<@&526087868079144961>
See above ⬆️ We wont have a reading session this weekend, we will start up again the weekend after 💕
✨
oh
Saturday seems like a better day for me
Tintenherz or tintenblut would be nice to read
Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen maybe
If that is too generic, could we read the first book of a series of unfortunate events in German? :)
Weve done a few sessions for Harry potter before, but we didnt get very far through the book, ill add it to the list
Ah sure that sounds good. What about the last book I mentioned?
Im not familiar with it, ill add it too
Thank you so much ^^
ive also listed a short story from him, it was interesting
It has an even sadder ending than the little prince though lol
I'm not in favour of HP, I have already read it, so have many people I'm sure. I'm curious about Tintenherz.
Things to note: both Tintenherz and die Unendliche Geschichte are quite long: 550+ pages
Thats quite a bit of commitment considering we read maximum 20 pages per week
And average about 12
That's like almost a year.

The series of unfortunate events would be cool. it's not too long, and I've read it in English so I have the context. I find that helpful when consuming german content. Having consumed something in english already helps
I had an English muffin once does that count
Yes.

I find that this if often an issue of how good this translation is. It's really tough to convey things like that in a translation, but it's so awesome, when it's done well. That said, I haven't read it, neither in English nor in German
loool
I'd rather read a book originally written in German, it's just not the same otherwise
@craggy citrus yeee I agree with you tbh. What I've always love about German is the way in which things can have wildly different meanings based on the readers interpretation of specific words. I've always argued that this is the reason why Germans/Austrians have always had the most influential philosophers of recent times. Of course oftentimes Germans are very straightforward and to the point, but when forming metaphors and questions, it can always become very subjective and thought provoking
I get what you're saying but other factors are important too. I'd rather read an interesting book that's translated than a boring book in the original language.
Especially because a lot of people aren't into reading these days and it can be hard for them to find something to keep them focused. In those cases, any book is good, if it keeps them reading (and the language is correct).
Hallo guten Abend
can someone help me with getting audio files of " mit erfolg zu start deutsch" ?
please ! Danke Schon
<@&526087868079144961>
Hello everyone here is the draft reading list for the next few weeks.

Also Update: Since many of these are Märchen-Geschichten, we can look for video adaptations and stream them too
you can do a command in #botchannel so it can ping you
Just click on the ones you want. The reading falls under the Reading role but there are also grammar sessions.
Yeah! More reading! \o/
group role buttons seem to be gone

im a fucking idiot
i cant read
its still broken, though. definitely not me
@proud egret I think the buttons look like they should. :)
Which function is still broken? Can you join any group?
Cal's ability to read.

If you just want to add or remove all the roles, you can use the two buttons below.
I swear there used to be all of them there and they could be joined individually
Did you change that
no just scroll down lmao
Oh kek i fell into the you cant read box
Just write it in greek, people will try harder to read it then say „its all greek to me“ XD
Soz
what does heritage speaker mean?
purpose heritage speaker
Indicates members who are Heritage Speakers of German.
This means that they were exposed to the language from a very young age (e.g. by their parents) but usually don't consider it their native language and never learned German in a formal school setting for example.
You cannot assign yourself this role. You must ask a mod.
oh so it’s like if you have a parent that speaks it so you can understand well but never could fully speak it yourself
gotcha 🙂
im glad im not the only stupid one, lets go watch paint dry
Im so keen how exciting

11-07-2021 - The goose girl (ENGLISH) - Die Gänsemagd (GERMAN) - There lived once an old Queen, whose husband had been dead many years. She had a beautiful daughter who was promised in marriage to a King's son living a great way off. Es lebte einmal eine alte Königin, der war ihr Gemahl schon lange Jahre gestorben, und sie hatte eine schöne Toch...
my bad lol
As for book suggestions i’ve been researching and these are the ones consistently listed for intermediate learners :
“Faust 1. Der Tragödie erster Teil“ by Johann Wolfgang Goethe
“Die Arbeit der Nacht: Roman“ by Thomas Glavinic
“Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse
Die Verwandlung - Kafka
Maybe this one could be a good pick?
i mean german students usually read faust in 11th grade and for them its very boring
because of the vocabulary or the plot?
It seems a bit advanced.
i mean you could just watch a series on german
yes but we need to pick something for the book club (;
oh
hmmm ive read some kafka, i found it quite hard and i dont think i could lead you guys through it at the level of detail you want
same with Faust
read harry potter or sth like that in german
Hermann Hess is also in the same boat
That's interesting, I second that 🙂
#community-discussion message heres what has already been suggested
harry potter is pretty nice
grimms märchen are fairytales and idk how to read them just watch them on TV tbh
i could preread your suggestions @brazen notch and see how it goes, but rn i feel like i wouldnt be able to lead a reading of them
Yeah and you're C level. So for lower levels it would be really hard, I think.
my first book in englisch was "gregs tagebuch" (gregs diary dk what its called in englisch)
ahh this has been suggested too, i forgot
so far weve read Momo and der Kleine Prinz in the server
diary of a wimpy kid is the english name
i love Faust but the writing style is a bit
im glad i never had to read faust xD
we can do a one chapter reading of it maybe
i changed school 🙂
i didnt
gymnasium ....
musste zum glück nur schachnovelle lesen
wie viele Seiten hat Besuch der alten Dame Acid?
warte
one should not trust “good for german learners” lists on the internet 😶🌫️
ahhh das wäre machbar, das könnten wir auf jeden Fall lesen
in school i had to read Boy 7, Nibelungensage, Schachnovelle
and other books i dont remember
i read Faust, Nibelungensage, Maria Stuart, Der Besuch der alten Dame, Biedermann und die Brandstifter and Der Richter und sein Henker
those r the ones i remember at least
why do you have to read so many books?
most of the books in school were boring so i dont remember then xD
german lessons
yes xD
german class so boring
it depends on the teacher
ich musste nur erörterung und sowas machen 😦
oh das haben wir gerade
wir hatten echt alles
It has started to be interesting in higher classes.
hatte montag deutschabschlussprüfung 😦
oh wie wars
having high school flashbacks
We discused about topics and books.

Verschwinde
Erwischt~

Auf diese liste meine persönliche Präferenz ist die Verwandlung oder der Vorleser
Oder wir konnen „wir Kinder von Bahnhof zoo“ lesen , sehr leicht
The cover is really interesting lol

@hallow crag tagging you, since it was your suggestion~
However, thanks to whoever can make it go down to 256kb without messing it up

Hmm, I think I managed actually
@fathom vector tell me if I messed something up

Good job it doesn't actually look awful.
Awesome, thanks
@nimble pebble If you want a "HD" version, here he is at 248 KB, just under the limit. :D

omg 🥺 horbert, i’m so proud

have u tried not being completely useless
Naww, never tried that yet

Thanks, Casca
I'll take that one!
Hello Bulli
Hey, Trax
I'd like to offer a "danke" emote for consideration. An example usage below as a reaction
(when not a reaction)

In theory, we could ping the Activities group for it, but it's a large group and people like games so is there a max player count? Though I suppose multiple parallel games are also an option.
I was thinking of taking some nouns + verbs from the A1 Goethe Wortliste and loading up a closed group session with the server, so that only members of the server could join and not random people from elsewhere on the website. It would work best in smallish groups (10 max, otherwise games tend to take a while), but parallel games would definitely be possible as long as one person is willing to host each game
It's super quick and easy to set up - just copy/paste a list of words onto the game config and share the link for others to join
One other consideration is if enough people are interested and parallel games are wanted or needed, it would be ideal to have one discord voice channel per game so there isn't cross-chatter. Voice channels aren't required for skribbl.io, but it makes it more social and fun if people are in one while playing
Yeah, sounds reasonable. @gaunt bridge what do you think about pinging Activities for something like this?
Pinging Activities for games is good.
Okay @obtuse granite, then I'd say just give us a time when you'd like to do this and a short announcement text that essentially explains what the session is about for someone who might be unfamiliar with skribbl.
For example, here's how doodle announced a game before #lessons message
or how Base announced a movie
#lessons message
Sounds good!
Time: Wednesday, July 28th at 17:00 PDT (UTC-7) / 00:00 UTC for roughly 1 hour
Blurb:
Hey all! I'm going to host a game on skribbl.io featuring vocab from the Goethe A1 Wortliste. In this game, one person chooses one of three words to draw while everyone else tries to guess the word based on the drawing, and everyone takes turns drawing. This is a great chance to learn or refresh your A1 vocab and have some fun at the same time.
i just saw this on another server. looks nice
Yeah, we have to wait for it to be rolled out before we can use it.
I'm trying figure them out, it means that #general-2 will be gone
And #questions-2 will collapse as well
I'm not quite sure what they are, but it seems more like a organizational thing
Hey @fathom vector, just double checking with you, did you see my message above? #community-discussion message
If it's too last minute to do an event today with no prior announcement, we can reschedule to next week same time to give more time to raise awareness
Naww, it's alright. I'll reply in a moment @obtuse granite
<@&639079683400400906>

@nimble pebble What's the usual procedure for starting the session? Do I need special permissions to use the lessons channel, or can I just hop into one of the casual VCs?
You don't need special permissions for lessons. Will you need to be able to stream?
Nope, no need for streaming
Then everything's set I think!
Veilen Dank ❤️
Bruh, that's at 2 am in my time
nooo 2am
Late night for lich
All the germans miss the german lessons xD
But its OK I know global-scheduling is hard. Hope its super fun
Yeah, hope the americans have fun :D
Hey, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for doing the #study-tasks! My partner has been correcting my work so I'm not showing up as an "active user", but I've been going back through the months doing the A1 practice and I'm really enjoying it.
Just thought maybe somebody would see it and take it as an extra "user" even though I don't show up asking for corrections.
@obtuse granite hi, sorry I meant to deal with this last night but completely forgot, and I'm on vacation now.
A couple of things,
I've given you the session holder role and made you a moderator of the Activities group. Assuming Bulli hasn't broken it by making the session himself
, you should be able to ping people. Feel free to do >help session now for a list of commands and we'll happily assist you if you have any questions.
Also please ping people in #lessons / #beginner-german or something, and not #community-discussion smh Bulli.
If @chrome shadow has some free time, maybe replace Bulli's ID with Birb's for the session in the DB?
done
does a mod mind removing my reading sessions tag please :(
Im on mobile and for a long time now ive been wanting to ask but didnt want to be annoying
Those bots that use the buttons just arent compatible on mobile
You can use >unsub reading if youd like
If the buttons arent working
Ah thank you so much
Sorry but can you explain more? Have you updated your app recently?
I'm just wondering because if there are any issues, it's important for us to be aware of them.
Yes, my app has been up to date
Mobile just doesnt support buttons i dont think.. and groovy's search feature thing with the dropdown list, i think thats tied in with the buttons as well - i cant acess that
I am as updated as it can get ; i have threads and everything
I dont think its a version issue
It was here as well
Hmm, idk it works for me
I'm on IOS rn
Weird..
Yea maybe its an android thing
I'd be surprised. I think it worked for others
However, can't really comment on that, so I'll just wait for others ^^
Hmmmm
Wait i got the issue :|
Nevermind rip
My phone is just stupid
Im sorry for the hassle
Idk why it didnt fix itself in 2 months but
Very strange
No worries! So it works now?
It's no problem at all. We're happy to hear if people have technical difficulties because it helps us to make sure everything is working as it should.
So thanks!
im not gonna press the ticket button XD but hopefully yes, in case i do have to :)
if not, ill definitely dm a mod
thank you guys too for trying to help
You'd still have to confirm it if you did ^^
You're welcome :3
Just as a recommendation, maybe a lesson about Perspectives like First-Person Singular
What do you mean? Like writing tips using first-person, or did you have a grammar topic in mind?
Not quite sure what the term is, but not just using first person
all kinds of perspective
like the usage of "erste person singular," "zweite und dritte person plural" usw
Yeah but what Bluwu was asking is like... what do you mean by "usage"? Do you mean beginner grammar like just verb conjugation? Or do you mean something like, how to write a novel in different styles?
As much as I would love to be instructed on how to write a novel in different styles
I meant beginner grammar
Ohh, okay. In that case, there are currently beginner grammar lessons already going on weekly.

Ist das ein Emotevorschlag?
Oki ^^

Could you pass it here, bitte? 👉👈
Maybe DM then?
Okay guys were going to read the first half of Die Unendliche Geschichte
If we like it we can read the second half too
Ive split the book in two because its quite a bit bigger than momo, and momo took a solid few months to read
Wait, what? We have a reading club or something?
Yeah, you can sub to lesson roles to get notifications about them.
Thanks for the info, I'll check.
Can i also have the whole file please?
Guys, I think there has been a little misunderstanding. You may not distribute things like that here if it's not free. That seems to be clear. However, also don't ask people here to dm things like that and also don't dm them
Aah okay thank you for telling that and sorry for the mistake

👀

yesssss
wo is my 20 cents arrem wo
Nice.
Interesting to see how today 4 messages got send in the thing of the day channel.
The last one might be up for deletion tho.
Nevermind, it just got deleted. Although the thank you message was nice, albeit not send in the right channel of cource.
Because I couldn't find a better channel to ask: Can I just jump in VCs? (I read #282831147942281216 but was not sure XD)
Yes
thanks :3
No problem
Which word was as the fourth "the thing of the day"? Why it was deleted?
es war wahrscheinlich kein Wort, sondern irgendwelche sinnlose Nachricht wie "hi"
aaaa
Es war ||boobs||. Also tatsächlich nicht der Rede wert
😆 Ich werde mir das Word unbedingt merken
Reading through the faq for past tense, it's occurred to me that even in places where more than modal verbs, wissen and denken are used in spoken German in Präteritum, they won't be used in the 2nd person singular or plural. Or at least, so it seems to me. For example, saying "ich sah, er sah, sie sahen" seems fine to me, but asking "Sahst du...?/Saht ihr...?" sounds extremely unusual to me. I mean, don't take my word for it, but I'd be surprised if many native speakers felt differently about this. :)
can i have a vocabulary lesson im beginner
We don't provide private/one-on-one lessons but if a lesson holder is interested, they may see your request and create a public lesson about it.
You can also see some past beginner vocab lessons here.
Lesson 3 and 6
New game suggestion. Using texts say from project Guttenberg. Pull short sentences and kill all the vowels from the sentence. First one to type it correctly gets points, say 10, next one gets 5 etc.

Or from:

Wir gehen heute in der Stadt
oh this was a suggestion not an actual game
lol
sounds kinda fun though
*die Stadt.
whoopsie i went and made it dativ
well der Stadt is also correct, which highlights the difficulties of the proposal
like i said, could be fun
Hmm, yeah, doing stuff like that (checking the answers and so on) automatically might be hard. But I guess we could look into implementing something which can get random sentences from somewhere and do various string manipulations to them, without the bot actually checking anything people type.
Like if you just purely want to get sentences, it could be possible.
What would a vocabulary lesson look like to you, going over themes like work, school, nature etc.?
Sorry for a late reply on that. I'll look into it when I have some time and see if there's a good place to put that.
👋👋
Would it be possible to have C2 level lessons in the server please?
I have a cool idea for a class but I don't have the time to moderate, what do?
the class will mostly be geared towards intermediate to advanced learners
What's your idea?
Theres an advanced level reading group on saturdays 21:00 UTC
Did you have anything in mind, what a c2 lesson would look like
i dont know, really
maybe a discussion about a topic?
a presentation maybe, and then the teacher makes comments etc..
what exactly is a reading group?
I am preparing for the C2 exam, what do you think could help me?
Theres a little group and you take turns reading from the book and then summarise what you read in german. And any new words will (mostly) be explained in german. The whole session is run in German too
that sounds terribly good
I dont know whats in a c2 exam so idk if it will help, its a bit of a comprehension and spontaneous speaking exersise
C2 exam is Muttersprache Niveau
its the German Proficiency
in Europe there are 6 levels
I know what it is, but not whats in the exam
ah okay then
the Reading Group is a good start
do I have to register for that, or i just hop in?
Just join at the session time
ok thanks
I usually ask people who want to read to put the letter V (steht für Vorlesen) in front of their nickname
what does Grüwüleinchen mean
Nothing really grün + uwu + lein + chen
Yeah i run it
ok I will join tommorrow
its midnight in Germany
but I can manage
thanks again 🙂
In Germany it starts at about 11 and usually runs for 1.5 hrs
its manageable
No problem, it isn't urgent, is it? I just thought it might be worth mentioning. :)
Okay, so I hope this captures the idea completely because I really think its good practice. This is how the session would be run:
We start off by reading an article/story with a degree of complexity that is suitable to the levels present (preferably B1-C2) and make sure we have enough time to understand it's meaning and the note down the words/expressions that are new to us. Once we are able to do that, we move on to the next stage where we try to express our ideas/opinions on the text and talk at length on the matter, whilst having the new words im Auge, trying to use them as we move about. A list of fixed expressions can be handy here as well, things like Redemittel for Meinung Ausdrücken or disagreeing with an expressed opinion. Conjunctions that are rarely used by the learners can also prove helpful. Maybe sentence structures as well, I don't know, anything that is useful to add to a persons speaking repertoire.
So here is maybe a layout:
Article reading and comprehension - 20 minutes
time to prepare opinion - 5 minutes
turns to express opinions - 20 minutes total ( each person 3 minutes uninterrupted)
rinse and repeat till session ends
This is very similar to Bluhu's reading sessions already, but I feel this will focus more on the Ausdrücken part than it does with the reading.
If anyone has any questions, or refinements or anything to the idea please do share!
Its a fun idea! I feel like using a stage for this would be good
Else it might be rife with interruptions
Sometimes for the reading group, i cant get anyone who wants to do the explaining part
Which can be frustrating, cause i only cycle through the same few readers for the whole session. But that problem would probably be solved by naming the event differently so people know what the focus is
We can have timers set up and make sure everyone is well briefed
I think no one likes to do the explaining part because it's definitely a lot harder, but that's how we get better at speaking, right?
your sessions have definitely have helped me push in that direction I feel
lovely to hear, thats why theyre here!
i had an idea for this too, you could pick some current arrairs like articles or some popular science type articles (the ones for laymans) and we could discuss those
https://www.spektrum.de/
sowas meine ich
this sounds like a really cool idea
So, I am not sure how threads are used exactly, but would it be easier to use it instead of having for example questions 1 and questions 2?
threads do come with a few downsides, the biggest one being that @jovial zealot doesn't support them yet, which is a deal breaker for now
oh, ok ok
Something about declension (weak, strong, when to / how to use it) would be useful imo
bingling is NOT dumb
Ja but this ones w.o the background
Someone seems to like peepos!
Talking about emotes,

i tried so many different ways to clean them up when i made the mallorca sticker and it just doesn't want to
Rasterize before it starts touching the edges. 😌 I'd probably put it in an oversized transparent canvas, rasterize and then trim off empty space.
yes, that's essentially what worked for me as well
i had the canvas resized to slightly larger, trim off the edges, and then resize again
you're splitting the votes, and therefore something else will win

Bin dafür neben Google-Docs auch .pdf-Dokumente in #corrections zu erlauben
Weiß gar nicht ob ich hier richtig bin mit dem Vorschlag

PDFs are not really ideal, since they can't be easily modified/corrected by the correctors like google docs (some editors produce PDFs that you can't even copy text out of properly), and they're a potential security risk, since there's a lot you can do with a PDF, so that's why we prefer gdocs. Still, we introduced a feature today that automatically creates documents with the correct permissions from texts that the users paste in, so no one really has to worry about that anymore, just paste in the raw text and that's it.
So there's a lot of importance placed on pieces of writing having ease of interactibility with the format posted, however I still do not see any arguements for why corrections are improved or helped when this is the case. It still seems that the listed benefits are purely preferencial. I still stand by the point of view that as long as the text is clear and navigatable for the corrector, it is able to be corrected, if not on the document itself, in the #corrections channel like has been done for years on this server.
For clarity, by ease of interactibility I do mean the ability to edit or comment on the document itself. Your point on some formats not allowing copypaste is valid, however is not a deal-breaker in itself for whether or not the text can be corrected.
@Arrem#4798 won't let me ping you
It's uniform, safe, there's edit history, an option to comment instead of editing the text directly and an option to color code corrections. While I don't like correcting with comments, there are lots of people who do and it's the recommended style in the how to correct a text guide.
And of course it works for any number of characters and not just the 2/4k limit that Discord imposes. So you don't have to jump through hoops to post a text, and as a corrector you can just correct the whole thing instead of potentially having to deliver a list of corrections, in which things are a lot easier to miss.
What do you mean by uniform and safe, and why couldn't corrections via discord messages account for the same? Ditto for the edit history and this is where I would say discord has the biggest advantage over gdocs. Names on discord rarely coincide with the name someone has on their Google account. It's either their real name, a different screen name, or in the majority case, an anonymous contribution. In each case, at least correcting from discord the user who submitted a text has the option of reaching out to the corrector directly, and discord users can be held accountable for mistakes or lack of clarification.
I agree, there are people who prefer correcting with comments, but this is again simply preference, and doesn't serve to solve the existing problems on the channel if we enforce only this one way. On the contrary, every single alternative, of which there are many, will now have to be individually accounted for and alternate solutions must be implemented to work around it.
I do not believe the sensible way forward will be just to disallow everything else. The consequences will be that this is somethingwe will have inform users on over and over again. We have created a system with a perpetually higher workload to maintain.
Forgot something else:
not just the 2k/4k limit
Why don't we just have using Google docs as a reccomendation for texts this size. Enforcing this on everyone when it only applies to the minority seems redundant.
I don't get why you're so strongly in favor of plain Discord over the bot just converting a message into a Google doc which is what happens right now?
I'm not just making an arguement for plain text, my overall arguement is for letting people choose their formats as long as the text itself is coherent and accessible, as I believe all options listed here are just as valid as their counterparts
^ keep for getting to comment
I think General should allow Latin.
Why?
Even if I am alone in this protest, I feel compelled to make this point. As a historically important lingua franca for Europe and the English speaking world I believe that GlaD, as the bastion of Language learning it is should encourage the retention of Latin as a language that can be used as an equal medium of exchange. Latin is experiencing somewhat of a revival nowadays I believe, and I have seen a lot of people on GlaD that Learned Latin in school or are learning Latin independently. GlaD might be one of the few forums in this day and age that even could use Latin as a medium of exchange! It surely wouldn't outshine German or English. I also believe that Latin would be fairly easy to moderate. Or it wouldn't be too hard to find a helper to help moderate the Latin chat.
I doubt that many people here speak Latin
And as you know, there are several Latin servers
as the bastion of Language learning
but GLaD is specifically a German learning server, not a general language learning server
exactly
Tons of people I have meant have taken Latin in school are learning it independently. There are plenty of Latin Severs but that is completely besides the point for me. Not 100 years ago had this forum been in person Latin would have certainly been one of the Auxiliary Languages. Latin would be useful as an additional language for exchange between German and English.
...
I disagree
Most germans know English and most English speakers that are learning German don't know latin
Where in the world are you meeting this many Latin speakers
VC. Search Latin in General.
Tons of people I have meant have taken Latin in school are learning it independently.
how many people speak the language isn't really relevant to the point here, because if you want to discuss that point then there are many other languages that a lot of members here share in common like Turkish or French for example.
Many people in German learn "Latin" in school, but that isn't speaking, not even reading, it's translating
Latin has use as an academic language and reading historical texts. Some Latin terminology is required for some fields.
Yeah, some fields
You're very very misconstrued about how many Latin speakers there are
English is far more universal
allow turkish in general :pepekalp:
And 100 other languages es
if we want to take into consideration that Latin was an important language in Europe, then the same can be said for other languages. French and Spanish for example are also still widely spoken today
feel free to use #other-languages and/or #languages
that being said, it's not gonna happen in #general
Latin also has the advantage of being a dead Language, which means it has no, or hardly any native speakers. It is a EQUAL language of exchange. The same cannot be said about any living language
I think it's somewhat anti intellectual to just trash on Latin :^)
Anti intellectual to assert that Latin would be at all useful as an auxiliary language in the 21st century
It could be but things like this happen.
For someone who never wrote a single message on a Latin server, you have a really strong opinion about that
Oh well. Case closed.
i don't think anyone is trashing on latin. it simply has no real place in the server. we're not stopping latin enthusiasts to have full conversations and discussions in latin in #other-languages
and yeah a dedicated latin server would be much, much better for people to get together and learn it
I think Latin is super cool as I like researching ancient languages
(there are many)
That doesn't make it any less useless on a global server
Since Latin likely is intelligibly spoken by at most a couple million
I love Latin and spend most of my free time learning to speak it (because five years of Latin in school didn't teach me that) but that doesn't change my opinion
I-
Okay
I this this interaction is a good example of why nobody speaks Latin anymore
Majority of the catholic clergy in the Vatican can't even hold oral conversations in Latin
They're the only people that are even required to know it
In the world
- I want others to be able to speak Latin in #general
ich weiß, aber da kann man stattdessen sein Lateinisch üben
The amount of people thar are learning german and know Latin enough to have complicated conversations about grammar in Latin while also knowing no english
Are probably in the dozens
If that
In the whole world
im not sure if it would be easy to moderate at all since most translators are absolute trash at latin
That's because literally no one in the world knows proper Latin lol
Some of it is still guesswork
Next time there's a German pope, they'll be fairly good at both German and Latin, and we'll write them a letter asking them to join GLaD.
im sure @fathom vector would love to learn latin and moderate general
@static dovehast du dich freiwillig gemeldet, Lateinisch zu lernen und #general zu moderieren?
so you passed, good enough
ten minutes in and a mod says no
... Why even have this channel?
half of the ppl who took it didnt
for a mod to tell you no when ur suggestion isnt good
Lol
This channel exists for good suggestions!
Yours sadly was not one
But keep em coming 👀
I didn't really think that my proposal had much of a chance but I believed in it...
at least u didnt suggest a meme channel

The point is, adding Latin would help such a small amount of people if they even exist
Why add that over Spanish for example
well sadly it's completely out of scope for this server so I wanted to save everyone some time
ideas and feedback are always encouraged and welcome, but they have to be reasonable
dicis neminem loqui latine posse?
And like the other person said hard to moderate
im the other person
isnt this a german server
what
u and me both bestie
Eh, fair enough.
as someone who speaks latin at an a2-b1 level fluent latin speakers number less than 1000
and people who speak latin as good as they would say, their native language number even less (look up luigi miraglia, daniel pettersson, wilfried stroh)
so why would one advocate for latin in a german server
IT'S BEEN NOT AN HOUR SINCE I'VE POSTED AND WE ALREADY HAVE TWO LATIN SPEAKERS THAT HAVE SPOKEN AGAINST ME
THIS WAS TRIGGERED BY A LATIN SPEAKER IN GENERAL
ET TU LEAFES?
Please stop stabbing Latin to death in front of me I'm already sad enough
quid velis dicere de sermone latino coram me?
its ok its not latins fault that its useless and hard to learn and no one likes it
who is the CEO of useless i will speak to them
Fluent sure but I said intelligible
I would like to think I'm somewhat ineligible in german
Definitely not fluent
Intelligible
still, intelligible, definitely less than 25k i would say
also:
latin is dead
and that's where the beauty of it comes from
miraglia succinctly explained this saying 'lingua latina est maximi emolumenti--quod non mutatur' (latin is at a very great advantage bc it doesnt change)
Genau.
i would add to this saying 'lingua latina est maximi emolumenti quod nondum potest intellegi aliquo 'google translate' utens
And there are (almost) no natives, everyone is a learner, or was once. It's a equal language for speaking with those of another language
is it, though?
first of all it's very much tied to european culture, and not everyone is european
There are 0 natives
thats why there r servers just for that
well yeah but actually maybe not
No 0
there's the life in latin kid
there r the students at weston
there's that one guy i keep forgetting the name of
Native speakers must come from a community that speaks the language
it varies on how you'd define native really
then there isn't any, you're right
Yeah it's not totally equal but more so than say, English.
And Latin stopped existing a long time ago as it evolved into vulgar Latin etc
but if only parents are needed: this kid is a native
It's far far FAR less equal than English
English is regularly spoken on every continent
Latin is on 0
okay true. not the Latin on 0 part
~~latin is regularly spoken and is the lingua franca in accademia vivarium novum where i studied it (albeit online)
~~
so maybe europe counts
You greet, party, order food, write all assignments in Latin?
Etc
Hey that's Latin

if you were to take the schoolyear at AVN, yes, definitely

or at schola nova in belgium
or in polis (in jerusalem) i think? but i really dont know how things are like in polis
Even if you are counting these offshoot universities, that's incredibly restrictive and assumes everyone can afford such
AVN
is completely free for all its students
sponsored by rich people who do pay to go to their summer course
i didnt pay to go to their summer course they gave it to me and 25 other people for free and as an exception (in my case bc im just too cool 😎)
If you are an A level Latin speaker and see this leave a
emoji, if you are a B level Latin speaker and see this leave a
Emoji. if you are a C level Latin speaker leave a
Emoji. Just Curious
what do these levels mean sorry i'm only acquainted with CEFR
or is a = a1-a2 etc
this
oh ok
considering that this is less of an actual suggestion for a server implementation anymore, maybe #general-2 is a better place to carry on this conversation
@torpid wagon @glossy arrow
yep
I was done with that message. Maybe if it gets enough reacts my it will become more of an actual suggestion for server implementation. I would also just like to add that this recommendation was made entirely in good faith. I honestly expected no reply. Obviously we all have some very strong feelings about the Latin language. Aber doch noch, wir sind alle bruddis im deutsch! Gute Nacht Jeder!
