not really, but I know the process through friends
U were able to get straight into college without bridge course?
yeah, I studied british A levels
Oh.. Yeye some boards are accepted.. Mm
Do u know anybody ill be able to chat with regarding studienkolleg and the process of getting into it
But when I count it up.. Ill only be done with B1 by jan
Fellow brit 👀
I was convinced you were American, Mikey T_T what a betrayal
American accent, does that count? ;)
lol nope, I did international A levels
But i dont get it... Why do ppl who do British syllabus get to skip studienkolleg
Don't they also need the high school knowledge in german
if your educational background is evaluated as equal to an Abitur you dont need to take a Studienkolleg
all depends on what classes you took in high school
Some Studienkollegs require only B1 german level. Also, keep in mind that you will have to pass the b1/b2 language test before applying.
aufnahmeprüfung right... Does that take place before Jan?
Mm.. From what I've heard... The German highschool lvl is much easier than what we had.. But then, in Germany there is 13 yrs of schooling
compared to where exactly? If the US then i don't think so. When I was speaking to uni-assist they told me a big issue with evaluating american diplomas is that the quality of education varies so drastically.
An Abitur isn't easy, even many native Germans don't go for it, instead opting for an Ausbildung or Fachabitur later down the line.
in any case they're quite picky with foreign qualifications, austrian and dutch unis are far more leniant if you don't have the exact courses required.
they don't unless (a) the a-levels they took meet the abitur equivalency requirements (mine didn't, any many many people's don't because the subjects required are a fairly unusual combination) and (b) they pass the requisite level of german test to meet the requirements of the course (which is beyond the level of german taught in school)
the true cost of tuition free university, navigating the absurd bureaucracy
its really telling how frustrating the process can be for some people when German 10th-graders give up and just attend uni in the US despite the high cost
Lol ye... I do go mad smtimes.. Going through all the required things
"An Abitur isn't easy" - But if you work hard, you can still have it, right ?
yes ofc, i was just speaking in comparison to American diplomas
Does anybody know about this for the summer session
It depends 😅 if u plan to go there, u should definitely choose a Studienkolleg and then get some information about it, what they require n so on. It’s hard to talk about it generally.
Wait. Like.. Its a common exam right
Happening like 2 times a year
Okay now I’m confused xD
Nvm my sms, someone else will help u. I thought smth else, definitely not of a common exam 😬😅
Hey guys thought i'd ask here about this, I'll be in Germany for an internship for 2-6 months early next year and my country has really delayed distribution of driving learners permits and the earliest I can even get my learners permit is December and it keeps getting delayed so who knows if it will even happen then. So I was thinking if I can do it while I'm over in Germany but I'm very confused by the requirements to do it.
I'm from an EU country btw. Since I'm not going to be in a university while over there so I'm not sure this counts towards me and if not do I still need to be in the country for 6 months to apply? Thankss 😅
i think this restriction only applies if you still have your place of residence registered outside of germany, and if you have it in germany it won't apply. But i'm not sure
What CEFR level do I need to be to apply for a university? And what German exams are valid for applying for them?
Depends on the program/university but AFAIK B2 or C1 for most
You’ll need to look at each unis website. But some of the most common and widely accepted:
TestDaF 4x4
Telc c1 hochschule
DSH 2
Goethe C2
@granite wraith
Hallo, anyone from Germany who can help me decide between two universities/cities for pursuing masters? I have to choose between Deggendorf and Passau. Would love to hear your opinions 🙂
Damn. I hope I can get to C1 in these two years then
Going from B1 to C1 in two years is possible right?
How many words does one need at C1 ?
from B1? Yeah definitely feasible
yeah B1 -> C1 in two years is totally feasible
i've known people to do 0 -> C1 much faster than that 😆
iirc for C1 you need 5000 active / 10000 passive words
i've always been skeptical of numbers in this context, except as an extremely indicative measure
Do you know the methods they used to understanding and memorizing vocabulary this fast?
yeah vocab numbers are a big estimate
i use anki for vocab
actually lemme check my anki counts
i have a touch over 8k words in my anki and i'm c1
Yeah I’ve been using anki, finished the A1 and A2 Goethe wordlist and im using B1 en
Rn**
Started a week ago
But the cards are a lot
I finished the grammar for A1 A2 and B1 tho
i think the important thing with anki is to not do too many words per day, because then the reviews become really hard to keep up with
for people who're not used to anki i don't recommend more than ~25 new cards per day
(=~12.5 new words per day, which is still 4.5k new words a year...)
(right now i do ~50 new cards and ~500 reviews a day, but i know i can handle that without falling behind; rule of thumb is that reviews/day = 10 x new cards/day)
Damn that would take me 80 days
If I’m confident I can keep up I can increase it right?
"keep it up", sure, but you need to be confident you won't fall behind.
i did no more than 10-15 new words per day for the first few years i did anki because if the workload of keeping up with reviews gets too much you'll just... notdo them
it's only now after ~6 years of daily anki that i'm confident i can manage that many reviews a day without getting discouraged or giving up
and imo there's no need to massively rush vocab acquisition, especially if you're giving yourself two years for B1 -> C1. take it slow, don't focus too much on anki and instead try to spend lots of time exposing yourself to native material
Do you create the cards ?
yes, all my cards were made by me
To me that takes more time than reviewing
(~12k notes = 24k cards)
i usually block off 3-4 hours every few weekends for adding cards from native material
I use sentence mining
i'm not sure what sentence mining is. i just highlight words as i'm reading native material, and in a card-adding session i'll add them to an excel spreadsheet with translations. for words that i feel i'll need context to remember i might add the sentence.
Sentence mining is creating audio cards from videos, there's tools to make it relatively quick
i don't have my german file to hand but here's an example from my swedish one of how i approach it - make the card with the words i don't know, then the card with those words in context.
audio cards from videos. interesting. i don't watch many videos though, more reading or podcasts
I find that video with subtitles are important
Just because you often can't look up words in podcast
I wish there were more good podcasts with free transcripts
Ik swr 2 wissen has them
ya
tbh my issue at the moment (with swedish) is just that i can't add new cards faster than i learn them 😩
Why is that, you can't find good examples ?
vocab now wide enough that it's rare to find words i don't know, which means a lot more time needing to be spent on finding the words to add
Isn't this the point where you move on to outputting ?
oh, definitely, and i already do that, but it's still useful to add extra vocab 😆
Pretty impressive stuff tbh
Hi Do we have to test for Covid when travelling from Germany to Spain by Plane?
yeah, I think you definitely would. They aren't letting people onto planes in general without a negative test or proof of vaccine
Hi, I plan on going to THL in lübek through my college with a study abroad program. Is it a pretty decent college? Also I was curious if once I got a degree there if I could come back afterwards and get a job in Germany
working in germany is quite easy if you can find work in germany
especially with the blue card, but even without qualifying for that (e.g salary too low or no degree) it's relatively simple
Interesting
i mean i don't qualify for it for both of those reasons but with enough research into the laws surely it was possible
need to go through the pre approval process though, a bit more involved
for the blue card you just apply yourself after you have the job offer, the company doesn't have to do anything about it
Ah cool okay, I was thinking about possibly come back if I liked it in Germany, Because I’m going for mechanical engineering so I feel like finding a job wouldn’t be terribly awful
Anybody here did bachelors in informatiks from Germany as a foreign student?
No 😶
😔
Hey, Good afternoon to everyone, i hope you are having a great day. I have a doubt, something legal. and it is, i was wondering if i could work in Germany as an accounter having a venezuelan degree. thanks for your attention. and have a great day
Try inputing your info into this website to see if your degree will be recognized in Germany.
https://anabin.kmk.org/no_cache/filter/hochschulabschluesse.html
thank you very much gentleman
Hey, anybody knows how the situation is in germany
Can anyone travel from spain to germany?
https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/quarantaene-einreise/2371468 use deepl if you need help translating
@grand sky Hi Arnaut! I have been to spain while they announced that it became a "Risikogebiet". Vaccinated and recovered people are allowed to re-enter Germany with no restrictions while unvaccinated people are required to have a negative test upon entering Germany. If they have no proof, then you are forced to self-quarantine for 2 weeks, unless you take a PCR test in Germany after arriving and the earliest you can get out is after 5 days. As said, vaccinated and recovered people with confirmation paper are not entitled to quarantine themselves.
ok, thanks for the info
does anyone know much about au pairs?
does anybody have any tips to get in to TU Munich?
enrol? 😉
@bold stump 😂
i was going to suggest looking up public transport routes 😂
@tawny dirge For a more serious answer I'd say you need to give us a bit more information, like if you are eu citizen, what you wanna study etc.
I WANT A VISA
@bold stump I'm Indian citizen.
- in last year of Bachelor's degree
- Bachelor's in computer engineering
- I wanna study masters in computer science at TUMunich
- Do you know someone from TU Munich? Students , professor, anyone?
I think just apply
The comp sci masters stuff there is in english (except for one i forgot which) so you need proof of English language
I think they require about A2 german for their english programs but check that with their requirements
I might have mixed that one up with another uni
oops
@exotic barn Please use #questions or #questions-2 for questions about German. And for questions about what a word means, it's best to start with a dictionary first.
okay gotcha
Hello all, Thank you for this informative channel. I live in İstanbul but I will be relocated to Germany, and I need to learn German, I would like to have some Knowledge before going there, So what do you recommend for me to do, I am thinking a private course that will be intense and paralel to my pace. any suggestions for online tutors ?
hello. Where should someone contact about their dhl paket coming from other country. the delivery was attempted but later taken to collection point. And haven’t left any cards on detail of collection point.
do you have a dhl tracking number?
Yes But it is just written as awaiting collection by recipient
yes in english
haha crazy
Yeah kind of
if you call their service number with your tracking number, maybe they can help you?
there is no 'show detailed information' button? nothing?
Yeah there is nothing and Bad thing is i cannot speak german while dhl employee cannot speak english . I guess now i have to search on each paketshop
Bereit zur Abholung durch Empfänger
This is last status
Guys genuine question, it may seem dumb but where is THIS in germany? I'm so used to seeing mudguard flaps but I can't find it here on a single bike here in deutschland
for some context, these are pretty standard in any bike I'd buy in my country, is it just not something that you guys ever needed or?
idk why they are not very common in Germany, but in many areas there are bike lanes and bike paths so you don't drive on a whole lot of mud or water
also depends on what kind of bike you are riding
some come with fenders like these
okidoki it just seems rare, i havent seen any here in aachen so far on mtbs
some are there in ladies and city bikes as enzyme pointed out but never on mtbs 😄
the more mountain and dirt bike-oriented models typically don't have them because they're intended to get dirty
on city bikes they basically always have them
More than intended it's like... A mudguard won't help
And it's just an extra bit to clean so why bother
guys, I have a question
is there a way to fight unfair medical billing in Germany?
I got billed a hundred euros for my vaccination under the guise of a ‘general check-up’
which is absolutely ridiculous, none of my check ups in germany have ever been above 30 euros
why are you paying medical bills? Do you not have insurance?
which is compulsory to live in germany
private insurance maybe?
they'd still handle small stuff like check-ups no doubt
its reimbursement style
because I’m technically not a student yet
they’ll pay definitely, its just upsetting to me how they’re making me pay 3x more and charging me ridiculous stuff
then i don't really know but if it happened to me i'd contact the insurance
they are the ones who will ultimately have to pay and have a larger lawyer-peen than any individual doctor, and an interest in both keeping the expenses low and retaining you as a customer
Well let's have a look at the law
So that says you can stay here because the RWTH Aachen admitted you
Where exactly is the text you sent from?
Okay so I asked some people that know more about that stuff than me and I got the following
Gem.
Hmm what's that weird symbol before 16, I get it when I change my keyboard to German, don't know what it means ?
Oh a bullet point ?
It's pretty much only used for laws
I see a pointer to a paragraph, thanks !
Who gave you the visa?
It's called Ausländerbehörde but those differ from place to place, I'd contact the authority that gave you the visa
yea
As far as I understand it, with the current one you can stay in germany but you have to study at the RWTH Aachen if you don't wanna get in trouble, because they don't know the other university also admitted you
But to prevent any unnecessary burocracy and trouble I would inform them before you do that because right now they seem to be assuming you're studying in aachen
That is why I would act asap
Yes but they don't magically know that you have been accepted and telling them beforehand is better than letting them know when they contact you because you are not studying where they think you are
Yes, exactly
guys usually how long does the embassy takes to accept student Visa, its been 3 weeks and still I haven't heard from them
depends on where you're from, took me 6 months
Deutsches Beamtentum :)
wat
So was it rejected and then you reapplied or did it literally just stay there at the embassy for 6 months straight?
no it stayed there
all I remember was I sent a request for a student visa, got a call back telling me the appointment for my interview in 3 months, and then I waited 6 months for it to come out
That was last year? Could've been delayed due to the whole COVID ordeal
immigrant visas are typically processed quicker than student ones, lot of embassies deem the latter as lower priority with Covid
I waited 5 weeks after having submitted all my papers
For me, i couldnt make any status inquiries for the first 8 weeks and was told by the embassy it takes between 3 days to 12 weeks to reach a decision and get a visa
this was in 2018 however
Been 4 weeks for me, still waiting.
it also depends on the foreigners office in the city you are travelling to, I hear
thanks guys for all the responses
also anybody here is waiting for an uni assit respond ?
Hallo?
Kennen is fine sooorrrry if i was being ambiguous
Kennt
I was asking about if the technique or the word was the issue
Oh lol i see im a mess today
haha
0815?
Got it today 👍
guys for someone waiting to travel in October or September last week , is it too late to apply for visa in September 1st week ?
that would depend on where you're from....
Afaik the processing of student visa takes min. 6 weeks.
Well in my case it took only 4 weeks. Glücksache 😂
Unless you get a DAAD/ERASMUS scholarship. My visa was out in less than a week
Probably yes. It’s always advised to apply 2-3 months before your departure to avoid any delays. As everyone here alluded to, without a scholarship it take a minimum of 4 weeks for the visa to come out.
I know .. I have already received an admission letter so I can apply for visa but however it's not the city or university I want . the university application I'm looking forward to is still "in evaluation" statues on uni assit . I contacted the university and they said it's cause deadline was extended this time till July 30th so it's likely to receive results a little later .. so I'm going to patiently stay for another 2 weeks and see
I wonder is there anyone on this server with a similar situation?
Ah I see. I hope things work out. 😁😁
How is it to be student in Germany? Is it hard to study in German? How is the social life? Is it easy to adapt as a student from another country?
Social life is pretty good if u need any help u can do „Nachhilfe“ they give u extra time to learn
Idk about studying I haven’t done it yet
You can apply for visa so long as you get admission letter from the uni. It doesnt have to be one particular uni. Imo the most important thing is, that you apply visa asap.
yes I know that, but I got problems with my countries embassy ,
I guess rules and regulations really differs from one country to another
Hey
hey
Hi, does being a "resident of a country" mean that you are a citizen of that country?
I have a South Korean passport but I live in South Africa and I have permanent residence here. I haven't been vaxxed yet and if I'm lucky I'll get my first shot before my departure date.
I'm confused as to whether I can travel to Germany for leisure next month.
guys so finally uni assit has sent my documents to the uni I wanted
does anyone know what does the last few sentences mean
It means that it's possible that you can get rejected for a visa application. An admission letter does not guarantee that you get a visa
@clear snow ^
i believe you count as a resident of south africa
having a nationality doesn't necessarily mean you even set foot in the country once, it has no relevance with covid measures
Kaution is a sum you deposit in advance that is used to repar for damages and the like. You get it back when you finish your stay at the place
Genossenschaftsanteil applies only if the place belongs to a Genossenschaft ("society of people"), in which case by renting the place you become part of the Genossenschaft and the "Anteil" is equity into it, so it corresponds to owning a portion of the Genossenschaft and results in interests being paid back to you (annually, afaik)
thank you 😭 , I didn't see this part - A person is considered a resident of a country if they have their domicile or habitual residence there. A person is specifically considered to have their domicile in a country if they have spent the past six months there.
if anybody is uncomfortable answering here , you can always direct meassge me
okay so I have a bit of a frustrating situation. I have a one bedroom flat that I rent for myself in Köln, but I will be moving abroad for at least a year and don't want to lose the flat, so I asked for approval to sublet it since my contract says I need approval from the landlord. He replied back denying it without giving a reason, but said instead I can cancel my contract at the end of December. The problem is, I want to keep the flat and come back to it. Legally speaking, is there anything I can do about this? I have the backup plan on referring to my subletter as my boyfriend and having him stay and transfer me the rent money while I pay anyway, but I'd prefer to do this the legal way if possible.
i don't think there's much you can do, it's their flat after all. You could try to convince them by finding a subletter you know personally, then they might be more inclined to allow it
guys is there does anybody how long does Hochschule Rhein-waal (in kleve) take to respond after they received your application and send you log in details. if anyone knows drop a message cause my friend is in some trouble
Does anyone know what kind of stamp I need to send a letter from Germany to England?

I'm in England myself 👀
I'm trying to send a stamped envelope to someone in Germany to send something back
Same protocol in England
oh, ok, that's tough

Any one from Nigeria here?
Because singing militaristic, nearly 100 year old songs, is just weird
to put it extremely simply: yes. The Erika song is beloved by neo-nazis in Germany and abroad.
Depending in which Stadtviertel in which city you're in, playing that out loud in public could get you anything ranging from weird looks to an altercation. Because there aren't that many types of people who take special pleasure in playing out a song associated with the 2nd world war in Germany.
Danke sehr Euch beiden!
Hey guys, hope you're having a good day!
I'm about to move to Berlin in Mid September and I was wondering whether someone knows where is the best place to start with looking for a flat?
Any websites are welcome (if it's not allowed here, you can freely send them to my DM I guess)
Thanks a lot!
wg-gesucht, ebay kleinanzeigen, immoscout are the three that come to mind. There may also be email listen/verteiler that have apartment offers on them
facebook also is a good place to look
Hello guys! I am in a bit of a quandary here.
I will complete my undergrad (Mechanical Eng.) in 2 years. I will then apply for masters in Robotics in Germany. Therefore I have a few questions to ask:
- I am already learning German (I don't want to live in Germany only speaking some other language), will this be a plus point in my application?
- I have started to learn introductory-level Robotics via an online course (because it's my passion). The problem is, the course has already ended and I am only watching the videos, i.e, I won't be granted any certification. Would it be better to have a certificate? Will having it put an impact on my application or is it just enough to mention that I have taken the lectures?
Thank you so much!
Please tag me when you answer.
You can also DM me
Is anyone live in Freiburg?
For DACH universities, do you typically submit SAT or ACT results?
they dont ask for them typically but you still can
You might be a bit late for some deadlines (especially in the US), they advise that you take the SAT in the spring of grade 11
Hmm
See
I have 4 AP exams to prepare for in spring of grade 11
I have to get a 5 in AP Bio to even be considered for admission in the UK for medical studies (and I’ll assume it’s the same for Germany)
I also have AP Euro and AP USH (I have Language and Composition as well, but I plan on giving up for that exam)
I plan on taking them in the fall of my 12th grade yr along with UCAT exams
So
I have a lot of studying ahead of me for the next yr or so
I don't think you need to assume. You could just look up this information here: https://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html
And if you are planning to study medicine in Germany, it is advisable to research the grades you'd need to study at the university of your choice.
also admission is different for international students, you do not get the option of Wartesemester.
Can you please emphasize on what a “Wartesemester” is? thank you
Hello there. Can anyone here please tell me what the chances are for an international student(non-EU citizen) to be accepted to the faculty of medicine in Germany. I hold an American high school diploma with a high GPA. My german language level is B2. Though, i will still have to attend a studienkolleg before enrolling in the university. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Any specific uni?
Hi! I wanted to ask, how possible it would be to do a Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwickler Ausbildung with fluent English, B1-B2 german understanding skills and around A2 writing and speaking? (eu citizen)
guys can someone who has opened a block account through fintiba , tell me in brief how to do it
since it's a lot of money , I'm kind of nervous about the process
For any Ausbildung you need to find a employer willing to take you. AFAIK there are no hard requirements for EU citizens. The school part will be 100% German with very little to no additional help if you can't follow the class or tests
i see
it's probably too late for an ausbildung this year anyway
imma try a year of normal school then
thank you!
not necessarily too late, you can hop in after the start date if you find a company willing to hire you
Has anyone here written the external FSP in nrw?
Based on what I've heard, studying medicine in Germany is very difficult, even for natives. I'd suggest you widen your area of search outside Germany if you're looking to get accepted more easily.
oh oke. are there even any places in the middle of the school year or so?
its possible, not recommended though
why so ?
really depends on the field, if you have prior experience then beginning a bit later probably won't be an issue
well for instance in some Ausbildung the first exam is in the second year or earlier, meaning you would have already missed a fair amount of content
ah
idk
i have experience in the subject but my german is not enough to express it ig
therefore i wanna try a normal school at first
tysm
well since you're an EU citizen you don't need a visa but for us outside of the EU the requirement is B1.
well your citizenship already grants you the right to live and work anywhere in the EU, this is just the requirement for the residence permit. The school might require some proof of German proficiency but mine didn't
makes sense
may i ask how did u manage and with how good german ?
well more or less throwing myself into situations where I can only communicate in German
I work in agriculture so very few people know English
sounds hard
honestly if you can advocate for yourself and secure a spot at a company you shouldn't have any issues, and I imagine any IT field is very open to people who know english
no problem, best of luck
:)
Is TestAS required for Masters in Germany?
It depends on the University. You should check their website
Many people whose parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were born in Germany qualify for German citizenship through descent. In essence you can reclaim your German citizenship by descent if: ... You were born after 1975 as the legitimate child of a German citizen father or mother.
Anyone know where to get more information/make it happen?
I have a grandparent, great grandparent, and far beyond all born in Germany.
I imagine at your country's German embassy
I did exactly that, you should look for more information on the webpage of the german embassy of your country
Hi! What's WU Vienna's reputation like ?
Have only heard of TU Wien. Seems decent. First time I heard of WU
Oh I was just searching around for business courses, and stumbled upon that
so was just curious
isn't there a rather famous business school in wien?
for specific country? I think there are some top unis for business stuff in the UK but for the DACH region i would say most are around the same level. Maybe WHU for their MBA?
its WU Vienna only
Mannheim Uni as well
right WU = Wirtschaft Universität, that's the one I was thinking of
so the reputation is better than a generic uni when it comes to business, seeing as it's their focus
Hm. I would say that's pretty bad, since usually the quant courses are godawful
I think WHU is the only MBA in germany that is somewhat selective? Rest is just pay-for-degree as far as I know.
yeah i am not going for MBA anyways, but for business masters courses, from what i have heard, mannheim is a bit better
but their MBA program is pretty great as well
Eh, pretty expensive and most companies won't care. I would just pick the city you like the most. In the end the unis aren't that different anyway.
(Wien is the nicer city imo) 👼
Wien ist anders
oh yeeah!
exactly why i was thinking about it
Anybody here done exchange student program to Germany?
I did
ok
as a us citizen with a ged, would it be possible to be accepted into a german university with a minimal amount of (us) college? or would the only chance be with a bachelor's degree?
you could go the route of the studienkolleg
depending on what course you took you could receive direct admission
https://www2.daad.de/deutschland/nach-deutschland/voraussetzungen/en/57293-database-on-admission-requirements/
try typing in the info here and see what the results are. I think for you it will come down to whether or not you have done 2 years of study in college or not (assuming you didn't do AP level courses for the ged), but worth a shot
The DAAD database on admission requirements allows international students to check whether they meet the requirements for the degree programme of their choice in Germany.
has anyone here done their first year bachelors in india and then moved to germany(the first year in bachelors making up for the need of a separate studienkolleg)?
you can get that along with the blocked account. ( expatrio, fintiba, etc)
or you can get them separately as well.
Can i only apply for visa after getting letter from uni assist, or the particular college?
In how much time can you get German citizenship
at least around 6 years if u really try and dont intend to marry afaik
tho citizenship shouldnt really matter to u lol
What is intermediate German level?
B1
i was on that site which led me to ask. the only options available are "hs diploma" and "bachelor's degree" and it says ged's are not accepted, so i would think i'd need to get a diploma and then a year or two of university or a ged and a bachelor's degree
I still think looking into a studienkolleg (sorta liike a preparatory course before college in germany) may be the quickest
i've been looking into that. the info i was finding said that you had to have some level of higher education and geds weren't accepted so as far as i can tell it's a similar situation as going directly to university
Do I need my residence permit before opening a bank account at N26?
(bin in RLP)
What do you mean by this?
considering and thinking about citizenship before moving to a country is dumb
Oh? Personally I find that to be a really important to consider (if you're looking to work/live there long term)
Life's just so much easier when you have more rights
the only right citizens have over those with a permanent residence permit is voting really
guys i have a question .. so there is this particular uni i wanted to apply this time but due to one of my exam results getting late i could not apply to this uni this time , but i got admission to a different uni so i will be going to Germany this winter, BUT i'm planning on applying to that uni next year when the portal is open again.. basically what i want to know is that can i apply to another uni for a bachelors degree in Germany while studying at another uni ?
yes, and you can transfer the credit too, if they match. As far as I know. @full sluice
In many cases, however, you will have to prove your exmatrikulation out of the current program when applying to a new program.
Anyone know any officially recognized translators for german-spanish ? I need it for the visa application
exmatrikulation meaning de- registration right ? meaning i will have to drop out from the on going degree program half way ? i dont get to complete it ?
what if the degree programs are not the same?
right...it would be pretty impossible to complete a degree program at a uni you're not going to be attending anyway 😅
so if the degree programs are the same i could transfer the credit and apply for a higher semester ?
if NOT i de -register ?
you will have to deregister either way
say you study 2 semesters of informatiks in München and then you decide you want to transfer to Hamburg or something. You'll have to apply for a higher Fachsemester at Hamburg, and as a part of your application process, it is very likely that they will ask for proof of you de-enrolling from München.
Thank you , understood! also what if the degree programs are not the same ? suppose i'm changing from a BA to BSC , can i still apply for a higher semester ?
and do they still ask for credits ?
Just a heads up: There's almost never a reason why you'd apply for being counted as a higher semester. Let the uni decide if they wanna start counting with 1 or with some other number N. The full Universities don't have "school years".
I'd say in general it is better to start with a number close to 1 since higher semester count usually doesn't give you any benefit but there might be some drawbacks
Thank you! applying to a higher semester is not my biggest concern. i wanted to weather it is possible to change your uni while enrolled in it. and is the enrolling process the same? apply via uni assit and then wait for the uni to respond ?
? I would disagree. If you've already studied 2 semesters, why wouldn't you apply for a higher fachsemester? Otherwise you're needlessly repeating a year of study and repeating credits you've already earned.
you still have a discourse with the uni about which credits will be counted and which fachsemester you'll be counted as, but there are special requirements regarding applying for a higher fachsemester. And in fact it might be impossible to try to push your application through the regular process (they will usually ask straight out if you've already been enrolled in this subject or are currently at another uni)
if you're switching degree courses (subjects), then you apply as an ersti, but not if you have already studied the subject at another uni.
We don't have "school year" type of semesters. There is a suggested curriculum but in principle you can do it in reverse or everything in 1 or 2 semesters. (There are module dependencies, e.g. X before Y but nothing that tells you that you need to write the BSC thesis in semester 6)
that's independent from credit transfer
I am familiar with the process and have actually just gone through eine Bewerbung für ein höheres Fachsemester this summer. Studied 2 semesters of informatiks, sent out several applications for a higher fachsemester (which you have to do if this is your case. You cannot just pretend to be a first year student) and have not had problems.
They give out places based on different criterion
Yes, as I said: let the uni where you are applying to decide how it wants to handle things.
I am also familiar with the process and can tell you that you don't need the Bewerbung für ein höheres Fachsemester at every university and some unis will recommend to you not to do that if it is not necessary
why i'm interested in applying for a fachsemester is because you don't have to stay until winter to apply instead you can apply in march for summer . that's why ..
also is the de - registration process hard ?
no it's p simple. De-enroll and get a certificate from your uni that confirms you're out (that's what you'll send to the uni you're applying to).
The count starts whenever you enroll. So you can start in SoSe or WiSe but it depends a lot on the uni / faculty how and if that's possible
allright then , but do i get any thing from that uni ? atleast for the semesters i have completed ? any credits or letter stating i have studied and completed certain modules there?
yes, you will have to provide your transcript and proofs, and module descriptions
at least to the profs/prüfungsamt of the fachschaft you'll be entering
that is how they will compare and see what they can credit you with 'vorherige Leistungen anerkennen lassen' or 'anrechnen lassen.'
Yup. At any point in time you should be able to get transcript of records and certificate of the amount of semesters. You'll also get a certificate for de-registration
you will want to look at this process for the specific uni and just follow their directions regarding applying as someone switching unis (Hochschulwechsel). It isn't very difficult (not any more difficult than applying generally is anyway haha)
And when in doubt, just call them and get in touch with the relevant offices
@bold crag @bold stump Thankyou , so de-registering from a university does not go into waste after all ? i get something to prove i have studied there right ?
Yup
(Easiest way to de-register is to just not pay your fees and they'll deregister you after a while ^^ but that's not really recommended 😄 )
haha no ! i will do it the correct way . because i want to get a good leaving certificate from the uni i'm de- registering
@bold crag @bold stump Thankyou guys !
Document you get is the same but it says "Zwangsexmatrikulation" instead of "Exmatrikulation" 😄
haha
also do any of you guys where can a student do a M course ? do i have to enroll in a studionkollege ? or is there any way i could do it private ?
sorry, no idea what that is
it depends, if the leaving certificate in your country isn't "as the same level" as the requirements in germany, then you have to go to studienkolleg before going to uni
I'm curious of the German school system. Does it play into "societal roles" if I go to a Hauptschule vs. a Gymnasium?
You can write the fsp externally in nrw (ie without Studienkolleg) and they allow it in some other public Studienkollegs given that you prove you can do in a pretest of sorts first (it's better to enroll though. The exam calls for intensive prep and it's hard to keep yourself accountable while preparing alone). Also it's possible to visit a private Studienkolleg but I'd highly recommend public Studienkollegs (no fees aside from semester contribution, same or better education compared to private Studienkollegs, better student facilities, etc.)
what do you mean by societal roles? If you are talking about whether there is a socioeconomic gap between gymnasium and hauptschule--yes. Germany has a problem with early stratification based on familial wealth and background in education. Richer more likely to go to Gymnasium, poorer more likely to end up in one of the other two.
I guess that was more my question - if people look down on one vs. the other. I.e. one is more likely to go to "college" vs "blue collar jobs"
yeah, Hauptschule is somewhat looked down upon. It's pretty difficult to go to university if you moved to Hauptschule for some reason.
getting into blue collar job can even be tricky, especially if grades aren't good. A lot of blue collar jobs today would rather hire someone with Realschulabschluss
Thankyou ! i cant just enroll in a public studienkollege right ? i would have to go do it through a university right?
Yep. You'd have to email the university's student office/apply through uni assist for that (the process may differ depending on where you're from sometimes)
Thankyou ! well i guess then repeating my Als ( secondary education) subjects and score good grades would be easier than studying at a studienkolleg!?
No problem
you're going to have to weigh the pros and cons there yourself. Studienkolleg is basically just repeating your final year but in german. Whether you should repeat the year to get a better grade and learn german upto C1/C2 on the side or start Studienkolleg with B2 and write the fsp is up to you. Both ways present different challenges but they're around the same difficulty
thanks but i guess at the moment repeating my Als sounds more practical than studienkolleg 😄 .. edexcel exams (gsce) is run by british council in berlin right ? for international students ?
Sounds good
that i do not know
hi all, do any of you know which city in germany with relatively low living cost for international students?
please tag me if you answer my question, sometimes my discord doesn't give any notifications. danke!
Aachen is pretty cheap AFAIK and it's close to the Belgium and Netherlands borders.
Unless you mean the larger cities. You'd do well to avoid Munich, Hamburg and Berlin.
i don't have much data for comparison personally but dortmund seems to be rather cheap compared to other cities its size
i am planning to study in Aachen, but I wonder if there's any city is cheaper. thank you!
what was that website to compare the cost of living?
and can i have a part time job while studying in studienkolleg and uni? because it's quite rare to have part time job here when you're still a student
I'd personally start with searching for universities that offer a program I'm interested in first, compile a list, and then start eliminating based on cost of living and other factors.
i found a website called numbeo.com , not sure if it's accurate or not tho
As a student you're allowed to work 20 hours per week or 6 months full-time per year. Whether you'll be able to find a job though is another thing.
well, the subject i'm interested is available in every uni so.. yeah
how much do students usually get paid for, let's say, working at a restaurant as a waiters or cashier?
I'm not sure, I have no knowledge of the job market. I just know that you're allowed to work as a student for a limited time.
i see, thank you so much for the help hehe
Numbeo does seem somewhat accurate judging by their info on my home city.
there are jobs specifically for students, and there's also the format of "werkstudent" where you can be hired to work for a company a couple times a week and be expected to study for uni the rest of the time, a colleague of mine does this (or something similar—i drown in all the different names of stuff)
i don't know any details though since i never was a student in germany (which i kinda regret seeing how many benefits you get)
Depends on the work and city, but I saw somewhere, it to be like starting from 9.5 euro/hour. Not sure though.
yep, minimum wage basically. But it's decent money for the side.
Can I know the requirements for German citizenship
And also do they give you a one month course like in Belarus
And Russia
@bold stump @bold crag guys , do i have to de-register from the uni im already enrolled in befour applying to another uni ? or is it okay to de-register after i get an admission letter from the uni im applying to ?
but what if you get denied and then you have no uni 😨
the schools don't talk to each other, I don't think deregistering before you even get accepted to another one is necessary
you need to look at the specific requirements of the uni you're applying to. When I was doing it with my partner, they had to send in the proof of exmatrikulation (de-enrollment) with their immatrikulation documents. So yes, you de-enroll before/during immatrikulation to another uni.
but why does the university even need to know if you're already enrolled at another school? You can't apply for a higher semester until after you enroll at the new school and it's done through whichever department your program of study is not the admissions office.
Okay, I see now, the words are a bit mixed up. You need to prove your exmatrikulation for the immatrikulation at the other uni. So you're never in danger of being without a studium. Because you wouldn't need to show exmatrikulation until you're doing the enrollment process--something you'd only be doing if you got accepted ofc.
As for the process regarding a higher semester: that varies by university. You need to look at the specific requirements, because many universities will involve a separate applications/admissions process for those who have already studied 1+ semesters of a subject.
this is why i asked this question! you know just in case ..
well for this uni im applying for, if im to apply for a higher semester they ask for grades obtained befoure from a degree program . so by the time i apply for this uni , i will be completing one year of studies at my current uni. so i dont think it will be a big prblem
it should definitely be possible either way 🙂
so basically , i wont have to show proof de-registration until i get enrolled right ? which happens (obviously ) only if i get accepted . so eitherway i wont be left out with an university
thanks guys
Please I'm searching for a place I can enroll for Fachinformatiker Ausbildung
Jede Ahnung?
guys does anyone know anything about BTEC exams ( Pearson)
afaik they can't be used for uni entry in germany, if that's what you're asking about.
because they're vocational
not even level 3 ?
@round skifffew days ago i spoke to someone about this if you wanna look at our convo, might answer your question
Do you just imagine or is it really true?
Cos I'm interested in Fachinformatiker Ausbildung
that's where you apply for a visa, but in order to be eligible for an Ausbildung visa you need a contract with a company which offers the Ausbildung
Yeah.
That's very true.
I'm hoping to get a vacancy in the Fachinformatiker field.
I feel it's rare 🙂
honestly not familiar with that field but since most people go on to Uni nowadays there can be Ausbilding spots depending on where you're looking
so basically, ill be starting an internship in frankfurt
however im mostly worried about my german levels since they are not that great i have just started A2 German
(a) level 3 btec is still a vocational course, it can't even be used for entry into a lot of unis in the UK
(b) it's not on anabin
apart from alevels what exams are (equivalent ALs) accepted in Germany?
exams from the UK, or generally?
for general entry you can search anabin for your country: https://anabin.kmk.org/no_cache/filter/schulabschluesse-mit-hochschulzugang.html
in the UK it's pre-U, A-Level, the IB, and scottish Highers.
@exotic barnits not a "must" in that you'll be penalized if you delay. But in order to conduct any business with the local government offices they require proof of your residence which is acquired via registering your apartment.
generally.. I mean even HND s are not recognized for uni entry in Germany? Higher national diploams are common in every country??
well, HNDs aren't a school leaving diploma so that's probably why they're not there...
since HNDs are equivalent to 2 years of uni they're not really comparable to a-levels or similar
that's definitely not what i'm saying 😆 HND would probably let you get in
but since it's not on anabin you'd need to look into how to get it accepted
well according to my research German universities do accept HNDs ..
great, then you don't need to ask me about it
these are questions specific enough that you should probably just contact the appropriate german authority / university
does anyone know where i should look for talc powder when living in Vienna?
Amazon 😅
also guys , do german universities provide free german language classes for international students? (asking cause i have to pay at my current uni and i have heard some unis provide language classes for free?)
you're enrolled at a german university and paying for language classes?
Hello! I am a German citizen, but I don't live in Germany. However I want to study in Germany for my Bachelor's Degree in university. I know that the main thing is language to apply the universities, but are there any options like I can apply without having a language confirmation degree and when they accept me for example for one year learning the language fluently and then starting my study in the department I want to study?
okay maybe the wording of the previous message was messed up. but yes. only for 3 months though , the course is 6+months . its not a big cost , very little compared to my home country price. but i was just wondering do all most all unis offer "completely free" German language courses?
id imagine so since the credits would go towards your degree
my university (Uni Potsdam) definitely did (though they were usually hard to get into because of demand). They'd charge students from other universities or outsiders but for students of Uni Potsdam below PhD level, it was free.
even if the credits don't count towards your degree, fwiw, since it didn't for mine
@olive summit @humble bough no , the credit wont go towards my degree! its completely in english
thats why i was wondering
yeah I'm in the same boat, my degree is all in English too
they still didn't make me pay for German classes tho
which level of german classes are you taking?
so you have to pay and the credits don't go towards your degree, if you don't get some certificate at the end of it i would say its kind of a bad deal lol
I took A2 and some B1
they had A1 but I'd already gotten through that material back in the States
I stopped taking them when Corona hit because I didn't do well with online classes, I struggle to stay engaged when it's not in-person
when you live in germany , learning german is never a waste i suppose! even if they dont give a certificate , i can still sit for the exams at goethe institute or somewhere since i have the knowledge !! 😄
but afaik they were free up through relatively advanced B2 stuff
yeah language is probably the worst subject to take online
I'm doing Babbel rn since I don't have the time/money for a full course and it's better than nothing, but yeah, it's not the same without the real classtime
i too want to do B2
I think once you got past B2 they just recommended a language tandem, but they def had B2 courses (though I haven't gotten that far yet)
@full sluiceyeah of course its up to you, its just an odd arrangement i've never heard of. But if it prepares you for the exams then thats great
were they free?
yeah, if you were a masters or bachelors student at Uni Potsdam
then what is the normal arrangement ?
well not having to pay for classes since you're already an enrolled student
thats nice to know!!
thats why i ask if it gives a certificate or leads up to an official exam--those are the types of courses you pay for
uni has informed me at the end of the course i have to take an exam .
does uni potsdam has bachelor programs conducted in full english ?👀
not to my knowledge tbh, but I haven't really looked into it, since I came for my master's
oh! thats why! then yah.. so did they said that you will receive a certificate or something at the end of language programs ?
not to my knowledge, no, but since they were free, I didn't really care much, I was just there to learn
oh okay !
Hey, while looking up pictures of German grocery stores, I stumbled upon one where in the meat section there seems to be a gold wrapped.. thing? Does anyone have any idea as to what that could be?
idk it is not clearly visible
Right, you can't really make out the text but I was hoping someone might just know what it is?
Gold wrapped?
Well sure but.. what is gold wrapped is my bigger question
sometimes fancy local bread is wrapped like that
not sure about meat though
perhaps a roast
Hello guys

See [here](#getting-started message) in #getting-started!
Most unis are good, especially for undergrad. You should focus more on whether you like the city and if the degree program suits u. Applying for grad school is different, coz research plays a big role. In that case look for unis that have research groups that align with your interests.
hi guys, i was looking at heidelberg university and the language requirements
"Before applicants can start their programme at Heidelberg University, the German language test for the admission to universities (DSH) must first be passed at minimum the level DSH-2. Some degree programmes require a higher level.
If a passed German examination cannot be certified at the time of application, admitted applicants must pass the DSH at Heidelberg University at the required level prior to enrolment. In order to pass the DSH at the level DSH-2, applicants should have participated in at least 1000 to 1200 hours of German lessons at a reputable institute. Supporting documents should be included in the application. "
would i really need to do 1000 hours?
I am
No
Does visa also count as "Aufenthaltstitel"?
Ooh, then you'll need to apply for elektronischen Aufenthaltstitel
But you can only apply for it only with Immatrikulationsbescheinigung from the Uni
If you are still in phase "applying for uni" and not in germany, then visa is enough to enter the country and live for a couple of months
How long does it really take to get the Aufenthaltstitel? I already have the Immatrikulationsbescheinigung and googled it. Some say 2-3 weeks but some also say 6-8 weeks
It took me 1 month
But i had to wait for 2 months til they sent me a Termin for interview
So in total 3 months, that includes filling in online application, termin vereinbaren, interview, get eAT.
So you stayed in germany for quite a while first while waiting for the e-Aufenthaltstitel?
Yep
But i guess it depends on where you apply for eAT. The city where i live in is a big city.. also due to corona less Termin is available in a day. With small cities you might get your eAT sooner
@exotic barn Were you able to rent apartements only with visa?
it's decent. Not the best but pretty good. I quite like the town.
I live in a Studentenwohnheim. I need Immatrikulationsbescheinigung for that
If I were to marry a German while having a student visa, will I still have to leave after my visa expires?
you will have to apply for a new type of residence permit based on your marriage.
I am planning to study mechatronics engineering at Hannover university but the language requirement for the major is quite so hard to get they are asking for a C1 level which an advanced level can anyone confirm? Or help me
Thank you in advance
I know someone studying that course there
it does in fact require C1 which is advanced German, but the language of instruction is also German so I am not sure what your question is. What do you need help with?
Can i talk with him?
what would you like to ask?
Because the professors will speak and explain in german, the students will speak german, and the assignments/coursework will be handed out and collected in german.
guys how does a bilingual degree works ? (german and English)
Is that difficult to do?
ehm, I haven't done it. I have looked into it, and it's not necessarily any more difficult than any other residence permit. You just need to show the proper documentation as usual. It can be difficult/demanding to marry in germany because special certified copies of birth certificate and the like are required. You also need to prove some kind of financial stability, but I'm not 100% sure of the details on that.
Hello zusammen, i have a question about Ausbildung biologielaborant and what is niveau I have to have it!?b1 oder b2
Google it yourself lol
For any Ausbildung you (just) need to find a employer willing to take you. The school part will be 100% German with very little to no additional help if you can't follow the class or tests. If you aren't an EU citizen your employer needs to prove that they found no EU citizen that was qualified
in the Universität Weins site says
should that be taken to mean that even if my diploma is from a non-eu country, just by virtue of holding a eu passport Im exempted from presenting a Univeritätsreife?
B1 minimum for an Ausbildung visa, not sure about that last part about a company having to prove they couldnt find any Europeans
might vary by industry
anyone studies in TU Darmstadt? I have my mechanical engineering Eignungsprüfung soon and i would like to ask some questions regarding that. about questions asked and how do i pass/fail
i have already downloaded an exam example but i want to know the deviation from that example
contact the Fachschaft, they have the experience
I know someone in TU Munich I think but don't know about Darmstadt
isn't that part where they have to prove they couldn't find any EU citizen for the job discontinued like last year or so?
PS: speaking about IT field
I have never encountered this but I don't work in IT
I couldn't fully figure out where it states that but what I mean is within these new rules that they're mentioning
Hello everyone I am Aryan from India, i am in my final year of my high school (12th grade) and I am very much interested to do my undergrad in Germany can anyone help me with a few questions regarding admission process for international students.
Thanks
Hallo! Guys I need a bit of help, I'm planing to apply to Studienkolleg but I'm not sure where to submit my application. The course is offered by Freie Universität Berlin and as far as I know I need to apply by Uni Assist. I'll look deeper into my application but any tip would be helpful. Thanks in advance!!
according to this page, you fill out the online application and upload everything to the uni-assist portal. if you're confused about something more specific than that, please ask!
https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/studium/bewerbung/bachelor/ausl-hzb/hochschulinternes-verfahren-aus/index.html
Thanks a lot! I'll check it as soon as I can
I'm going to graduate in a year with a bachelors in Languages and Literatures - German, and a minor in Computer Science. I'm currently studying abroad in Freiburg and aim to achieve a C1 level by the end of the year (recently completed my B2 and will be studying the language full time).
I definitely want to pursue German further -- one possible option for me is pursuing a masters in Germany. I am interested specifically in Heidelberg's Übersetzungswissenschaft Masters -- however it is listed as a consecutive masters. After reading through the admission guidelines, all that is said is "other bachelor degrees with similar course content are also accepted". My degree isn't a translation degree, although I've taken various linguistic science courses. Would I be able to swing it?
I understand the best thing to do is send an email, but I figured I'd also ask here -- I'm sure someone here has had a similar path as I have. Basically I'm curious how strict German universities are when it comes to consecutive masters -- I've done my share of digging around but it'd be nice to hear personal experiences.
there might be a document somewhere on that course's page stating exactly what previous courses they require / how many ECTS
certainly this is the case for the masters degrees i've looked at for myself
Ah I found it -- just says you either need a B.S in Translation studies or a "philological degree" -- if German language and literature isn't considered a philological degree I'll cry
Should be okay... I think.
heyy guys i need opinion, what do you guys think about studying non-teknik in Germany (such as psychology, art, etc)? cuz i'm sure most of you know that Germany is known for its technology and medizine
Germany is also where the field of psychology literally was born, so there's that
Also don't judge entire countries and their education systems based on stereotypes
I'm planning to study Information and Communication design at Hochschule Rhein waal, but tbh I'm scared of not finding proper Job opportunities after graduation...
if I ever graduate, that is :>
this is exactly what i'm worrying about, i'm interested to music and psychology but i'm afraid won't get a good job after that
ahh i didn't know about that, thanks man
yes after i consider, Germany is a developed country with good economic conditions so it should be easy to look for a good job, dont u think?
my sister took the engineering route years ago and instatntly landed a job after graduation, but it's totally different when it comes to art
yea ikr... you're planning to study design?
yeah but I'm still not sure
same dude...
Psychology is a very competitive degree course in germany. And the job prospects are good.
ahh thank you. which STK Kurs do i have to take to study pyschology? some said M-Kurs and some said G-Kurs
does STK mean studienkolleg? If so: I have no idea. I never attended a studienkolleg
if you ask the uni, they will surely have an answer
yeah i mean Studienkolleg... that's not a problem, thanks!
do you know which uni with the best or at least great in psychological study?
most bachelor programs at german public universities are very similar, and it's not as stratified in 'prestige' or quality as other countries.
I have heard that the course in Marburg is well regarded. I don't know about Gießen or Goethe Uni in Frankfurt. Potentially Düsseldorf, Konstanz. FU Berlin I think is well regarded in most things, though more humanities oriented?
Marburg is near Frankfurt, oder? i'm gonna look up further on the internet, thank you Gray
Hey guys, I'd like to ask if you could get a 2 year study preperation visa for both language and a studentkolleg or not?
is that possible, since the preparation visa can be extended to up to 2 years
and I believe that it's for one or the other but I am not sure
for bachelor/master fully agreed. It might make a small difference if you go to a large/small university though.
Yeah, Marburg, Gießen, Frankfurt are pretty close and well connected by Autobahn/high speed rail
as far as i know, the visa for Studienkolleg and Sprachkurs is different, i might be wrong though
Hello everyone. I recently completed my studies and returned to the United States, only to begin the classic tale of "bullshit 'cleaning' charges and other Kaution-ary tales". The suggestion of pretty much every forum post I came across seems to be to join a Mietverein, but I had some questions about that:
A: Is it possible to do so even after moving out of the country? The rates dont seem that bad, but it's hard to tell if they provide retroactive assistance/assistance to non-residents.
B: While a few Berlin ones offer English help, the ones in the city I stayed (Hamburg) seem to be German only. Should I proceed with my best attempt at German then? 😅 (or if anyone knows any EN ones in Hamburg, that would also be great).
Hallo Alle, I have some questions regarding internships for Bachelor Degrees. I was looking through some requirements for Mechanical Engineering degrees (particularly TUM und RWTH Aachen), and I don’t quite get the Internship Part. Do they really require 8 weeks of internship before applying for a bachelors degree? How in the world would a minor (or at most an 18-year-old) be able to find 8 weeks of internship when **a pandemic **is going on? Could it be equated with something else (i.e. Physics summer camps or Robotics-Clubs)? Thanks in Advance!
Many companies are still offering internships.
In my city (with about a population of 150.000, but highly developed for my country), there weren't any mechanical engineering internships available all summer. There were a ton in software development and things like communication & IT, but nothing in engineering (besides something that clearly stated "university students only"). Maybe I should try going to my city's engineering university and ask some students, maybe companies go directly to them and don't advertise too much online?
Do they really require 8 weeks of internship before applying for a bachelors degree?
IIRC from my brother, yes
How in the world would a minor (or at most an 18-year-old) be able to find 8 weeks of internship when a pandemic is going on?
Talk to as many companies as possible, most to all are aware of these required internships.
Could it be equated with something else (i.e. Physics summer camps or Robotics-Clubs)?
(very) unlikely, but you can ask the university
Well, thanks a lot. I guess I'm up for a challenge!
Actually, one last question if I may. Does anybody know if the internships should be completed before the application deadline or the actual start date of the courses (this would help a ton, summer internships are much easier to find)? I know it mostly depends on the university, but a general idea would be helpful.
Hello, weird question and weird request, are there any french there who moved out from France to Germany here ? If yes, I would like to know their experience and to ask them some questions if possible please ! (That possible that you see this question quite often over the weeks) I try to get the most information possible from as many people as possible
I know one person that moved from France to Austria if that helps
I met this person early in the day I think, but it's not that I'm not interested, it's just that i don't want to mix everything and get confused with Germany rules
So I really prefer to gather as many information as possible about moving IN Germany
I should edit my question though, and ask for people moving IN germany directly, yes I will do this though
Hello, does anyone want to study in Germany with stiftung scholarship?
I really want to know about this as well as those are my preferred field of studies and I do want to get into a decent university in Germany in about 2 years.
all universities in Germany are at least decent, there is a much smaller gap between best and worst than for example in the USA. An art degree isn't any more valuable just because it's from an other country. You'll need C1-C2 German, as you'll need to read texts in German that even some native speakers struggle with.
An art degree isn't any more valuable just because it's from an other country
addendum: except, perhaps, making getting a longer-term visa in germany after you graduate easier depending where you're from and what job you get when you graduate
friend of mine from Cameroon unfortunately couldnt get his bachelors recognized here and had to start over basically
but for western nations I imagine all degrees should be equally sufficient
Anyone who has applied for the tourist visa to Germany recently?
hey guys. how are you doing?. i am looking for a study partner who can study German with me. not chatting but actually carving out dedicated time and sit down and study our material. i am also open to make it a study group if it is better for motivation and commitment. DM me if you wanna test the idea ^^
Hi guys, just a quick question. I was looking at some bachelor degree courses at TU Braunschweig and most of them are 6 semesters long. That was odd, because my course here in Brazil (electrical engineering) is like 10. Are y'all warping time or is there some difference? Maybe a more practical approach to the field or just better time planning?
It's important to me because I want to know if there are possible draw backs, you know? Maybe it's faster but later on I'll have trouble with something or something is missing
It might be that the one in brazil combines a masters degree?
I dont live in Germany, but here our engineering degrees are three years and some have an extra honours year
Then you can do a two year masters if you want
Theres also another graduation title in germany i remember seeing somewhere (might be the older one)
Its called a Diplom-Ingenieur. It requires 5 yrs of study and is equivalent to a masters
6-7 semesters is pretty typical in DE for a Bachelors, usually they require you to complete an internship in the relevant field by the 3rd or 4th, can vary by program
Hi
That's interesting. It doesn't combine a masters degree, many people I know go after a master's degree afterwards. We do have an internship at the end of the course. I guess it's a different methodology idk. That's another really good reason to go to Germany then. In the time I'd take to finish my bachelors I could get a masters lol.
Most German students go on to do their masters as well
idk how it's done in Brazil, but in the US bachelor's degrees typically take 8 full-time semesters as opposed to the German 6, but it's because there are more general education courses that aren't required in Germany
then again my master's degree in Germany is in its 3rd year when it was supposed to take 2 so 🙃
Hallo, any natives from west side ? Just came to Germany and trying to language and how things work in "Germany" 😄 is there anyone who wants to help and hangout ?
Yeah mine here in Brazil will probably last a while too. I flunked a mandatory class 🤦♂️
I looked into it. We have a lot of theoretical classes and it's a very broad course. In Germany you could pick later on a Schwerpunkt and this would be like a specialization. Although we have that, we still have to do a few from the other Schwerpunkte. So it just has more stuff to go through. If you will ever really find use for said things, well...
But I am still convinced that going to Germany is a very smart decision. As long as I pass the TestDaF next month I'm setting sails. Hopefully. I was vaccinated this week with Pfizer so that's one problem weniger
is it hard to graduate and get bachelor certification?
is there much difference on difficulty of graduation and exams between unis?
what kind of proof of vaccination is accepted for non EU nationals entering Germany? (I will call the German embassy later today but I'm curious how other people managed.)
The most common ones are janssens, pfizer and moderna
yes I know about the vaccines accepted in the EU but I'm not sure whether my vaccination card will be sufficient proof that I've been vaccinated
Do you have the yellow Impfpass?
I believe that's enough proof if you want to travel to germany
they have to enter germany, i think it's safe to assume they don't have documents issued in germany 👀
Eh yellow impfpass is not issued everywhere?
I thought you could go to any Apotheke, doesnt matter in or outside germany, and get yourself the impfpass
I literally just have this piece of paper
Well ig you should ask the embassy just to be safe
yup... they aren't answering calls anymore because of covid 🤡
will email them soon
Or write an email to germanys Ausländerbehörde
I have an American vaccination card and it has been fine getting back into Germany. It's not yellow @exotic barn
oh cool! thanks for the reply!
Can you learn culture study for free?
hey guys how long do you think it takes to study for the goethe c2/testdaf 4 level exam (for university admissions)
im currently at b1 and i can spare 4-6 hours a day doing german for 2-3 months and then 3-4 hours for a few months after that to apply next july
should definitely be doable if you work diligently during your allotted hours.
would a language school be necessary?
TestDaF 4 I have heard is B2/C1, I know for the Goethe exam some unis require the C2 certificate, but for Telc C1 hochschule is enough. So you're looking to move from B1- about C1 in the course of 5-6 months
ahh
it depends on if you feel you are responsible and capable of learning by yourself
I didn't feel like the intensive course at a sprachschule brought me forward very quickly/efficiently, so I studied mostly alone. But if you're the type who doesn't like to use books or spend time looking stuff up, a teacher might be worth your while
Yeah, it is possible but not easy. 4-6 hours a day should be enough to get there but it's also possibly too much for most people.
Like in my opinion, burnout would be the biggest potential problem for most people.
My advice is... set yourself a goal for a specific date where you want to be at a B2 level. And use that middle point to assess how well you're progressing.
a class room environment with the competition really helps me, but id have to see if i can make extra time for that, i do use books and online material
do you think a teacher guiding me could help me waste less time and get exam ready faster?
When is your C1 exam exactly?
If your goal is to get into uni (i.e. pass the exam), you can get away with not really being C1. Also, are you living in Germany already? I think that makes some difference
yeah i did consider that but im willing to attempt it regardless since its just for less than a year
and once i got the fundamentals of each level down id probably do 2-3 hours of studying and some hours of immersing (reading writing listening speaking)
In my experience, language schools in Germany--and I don't mean this insultingly at all, everyone is just trying to make it as best they can--were not competitive and most of the students were far below the level they should've been at according to the level of the class.
id have to take it before application starts , so before july 2022
nope im not in germany.
yes i did hear that the testdaf for example has a very fixed pattern and from youtube i found that you just need to be really familiar w that and practice it often to crack the exam
In that case I would say, maybe set yourself a goal to be B2 by around... either start or end of December.
i will do that!
this too, this is a good idea.
thank you basementality
No problem. That doesn't mean you have to exactly meet that goal btw. It's just that you want to set yourself a kinda tough (but possible) goal, so that if you miss it a bit it's not a big deal.
yes all of the major tests are pretty fixed, and by training strategies specific to the test you can pass. In case it would interest you, as it was the thing I was most worried about: the grading of the spoken portion if it's done by human beings (can't speak to digital) probably depends on your testing center, but in my experience was very very generous.
thank you base! it makes a lot of sense <3
ahh, yeah that is scary too, seeing that i dont live in germany and wouldnt speak as often
i hope they are generous, i need to build up confidence speaking
i try to speak to a german friend on vc almost everyday with basic short convo
here i really would recommend trying to find a language exchange partner or someone willing to have conversations (of substance) with you on a regular basis.
Redirecting my problem here,
Do you guys know whether you can order a Selbstauskunft/Schufa Auskunft for free? All sites show that you have to subscribe for 20-30€. Even the ones that say you can do it for free, you can for 30 days and then there's a fee..
You could ask your bank, it's possible they'll do it for free
Note that some companies and landlords will do the checks for you. I don't recall ever having to pay for schufa or filing anything myself but i could be misremembering
to rent our place the Hausverwaltung just sent us a form to fill out
I see. Thank you for your answers :)
hi guys i wanted to ask about bavaria and rossenheim in general
what can be the monthly costs
hey guys so i'm unable to book an appointment at the German embassy in my country because my country is under lock down cause of the pandemic. the embassy is not allowing new appointments and they have post phoned already booked appointments . in this case i'm unable to get enrolled at my university within October 15.. my university is not responding regarding this question as i have already emailed them . does anybody has been given an extended date to enroll cause they are unable to get visa due the unpunctuality caused by the pandemic ? lock-downs etc??
are you having trouble matriculating?
well ya basically because i have to email my proof of visa and other relevant documents to the university by october 15th 2021(the deadline to get enrolled) but i'm unable to book a visa appointment at the embassy in my country cause my country is under lockdown
I didn't need to do that to matriculate
nope, at least I don't remember that being mentioned anywhere
you could only apply for a visa after you have a university seat
and that takes around 3 months
many international students arrive therefore late to their first semester if thats how long it takes to get an appointment at the embassy
The uni I applied to did not assist with the visa process, the acceptance letter was all they provided (and all that was needed)
this^^
which is why I asked if you are having trouble matriculating
if you could send a screenshot of what you need to do without sharing too much info (i.e. doxxing yourself) that would be better
i already have the accepted letter ! but to get enrolled officially as a student at the university . i need to send them by proof of visa and other relavent documents like fees paid for the fist semster etc.
mind if i pm you?
sure
i could pm you the sceernshot but i cant text you
if you can accpet my friend req i think we can text
Anyone here happen to know someone who immigrated to germany from the USA?
Or someone who is pretty familiar with everything you need for an extended stay including getting german Health Insurance and Visas?
I'd like to know more about the process of coming to stay in germany, be it temporarily or permanently cause a pal needs helps with it!
I want to do Studienkolleg T-Kurs in a public university I am from India and am doing B2.2 currently, I want to give die Aufnahmeprüfung for the Summersemester 2022 Is it possible? I am getting worked up with different dates and requirements for different universities. Will i have to take a private one for the same?
I want to study Bachelors in Mechatroniks
@severe hazeli can help
would u mind if we talked in DMs?
sure
@olive summit @severe hazel mind if i join your discussion?
just ask the question in the channel but if you want to dm me its fine
nah i meant i wanted to join, i dont really have any specific question. just wanted to hear new information that i may not have known before
fishing if you may say
may i know where you are from? @olive summit
east coast US
@olive summit were you fluent in german when you went to germany?
no actually my German was very rudimentary
did you have like a certificate?
i heard you need a B something something certificate from officials to join studienkolleg
I had no certificate, i initially came via an exchange program with other American students
but for a Studienkolleg you need a B certificate
i guess thats one way to study in germany
a lot of programs are offered in english so your language skill doesn't need to be perfect, just depends what goals you want to achieve
planning on an actuary major
not really sure how much german i need or even english programs are available
quite a few general business programs are offered in english
finding a business / actuary job might be tough if you don't speak german though
Im interested in doing my masters in Germany but there are so many different Unis its kinda hard to narrow things down. Are there any tools or something that can help me find a university that would be a good fit for me?
Are you looking for a specific degree? I recommend having a look at the more popular universities' degree programs and seeing which one seems the most interesting to you
Since it's a masters there should be more specification and difference in programs between universities than a bachelor's
Geschichtswissenschaft. I really want to study the DDR but I've had no luck finding any program about that unfortunately. Do you know anywhere I could look?
thank you for the advice
i might pickup some german along the way but im pretty concern it might not be enough
you can improve your german during your degree
a 3 year degree is more than enough time to get to C1 (which is enough for jobs) if you're living in the country
Hello every one, I am a student in pharmacy studies and I want to finish it in Germany. Any one have information on pharmacy studies there? And if we can join them in the middle?
Is it realistic to get a company in Wien, Austria, to offer you a job so that you can get an EU Blue Card to start working there? I'm from the USA and am hoping to move to Wien in 2-3 years with B1 level German, and work there and study part time as I don't have a degree but have technical experience in IT and have some college credits. I've done all the research in terms of visas, and Red White Red/Plus card, and EU Blue Card requirements.
So I'm just wondering what's the most realistic way to be able to work in Wien based on how companies hire. 😅
in Germany you need C1 level to study in a university
and i think you need a full time job offer to get the blue card
you can come to Austria and study and after your studies get a job
what level of german does one need for a bsc course that is both english taught and german taught i.e., few modules are taught in german. ?
check the university's website, it is different for each uni
yea yea
i feel like C1 tests contain german that not even native speakers use right can any native speaker confirm?
like there's sprichwoerter n stuff that only the senior citizens understand
i dont rlly get the point of learning those if the next generation barely uses them.. dont mean to be rude lol
how do you suppose one can test your german skills otherwise
using german that's actually used irl
my german friend got a 55% score in the online c1.2 practice test
n said none of those questions r useful so i was just asking other native speakers
you didnt answer my question tho :/ but good luck ig
eyo i did
we can use irl business convos, news, complicated feelings expressed, not just idioms?
i do think those are tested
it is a foreign language after all
no one can inject a serum in you and have you know only the right knowledge
no not in the sense of difficulty.. like knowing trignometry is not thaat useful when ur field has no relation to it but they test u on it
man why u being so straight up lol im just expressing my thoughts
no offense nichts fur ungut
this isn't really the case
Some companies offer visa sponsorship, you could look for jobs from one of those
No, I think the test is pretty normal. It’s a bit strategy based and of course a short test isn’t going to cover everything. The point is pretty much to test if you can engage with more-than-simple German (scientific papers, articles) and formulate coherent arguments in German. If you make sure you read the excerpts closely and listen well and know what they’re asking (I.e. some really anal true/false/not in text. A native who doesn’t know any better is probably going to miss here for interpreting and deducing too much). Otherwise I’m sure you’ll be fine. Believe me, the German at uni is going to challenge you way more than the exam
hey, are there any books or any other resources to study the syllabus of the t course?
i think it's because the level of language proficiency required to smoothly sail through academica is higher than the one you use in general conversation
i found this for a random studienkolleg from münchen
i think you need b1/2
i see
check the daad website maybe they have it
do you think b2-c1 in an year is an achievable target?
b1
the latter
yeah well i definitely am willing to put in the work, just want to get the right guidance so I don't waste time or get stuck
are you planning on studying in germany as well?
awesome, I'll check them out
if in a month i find out i have a chance
then yes
or else 🥲
will you be applying for ug or masters?
because like there's no age limit right?
and if you're applying for ug, you can always spend a year studying in a local institute and then apply again, skipping the studienkolleg
that's what im doing
ug
im trying that too, but the semsesters in my country may not end on time because of covid
so im not hoping too much for that
India?
🐸
hahah same
ug?
yeah
parents are like no studien kolleg they said do whatever tf i want after i enroll in an indian uni first

so either through jee or first year
why aren't there like two sessions in germany, a winter one and a summer one
the course i want starts winter
so will you be going to uni here this year or are you already enrolled
i will do my first year in india
i see, well i really plan on settling there so im not hell-bent on getting a particular course
ahh
then you can easily get if you have the german cert ready
and if you have good school grades too
wait what's that?
your language proficiency certificate
i pretty much dont have anything rn because my uni hasn't even started so it's all a year away
are you going to uni in india this year?
yup
ah
gonna learn German on the side
then if you go to a studienkolleg, you can only apply next year right?
yes I'll apply next year
wait why 27?
wont it get delayed by 2 years instead of one
because one year for studien and then you start uni in october 2023
I won't have to attend studienkolleg right? because im doing an year in uni here
o yeah
if youre directly joining then yes you wont
yup
thanks 😄, what's your major?
hope it happnes for you too
im choosing engineering this year
idk what major, maybe comp sci but if i get something through jee i will take it haha
are you in your first year is your uni yet to start?
same
will start this year
yup same
😩
i trashed my jee 😋 didn't even take the fourth session lol
