Ich habe viele wenige Freizeit*
Letzte woche hatte ich eine Idee* could look better i also think
viel beschreibt das Wort "weniger"
i thought it was an adjective ending
i didnt notice lol
but why is it "viel" and no -e
Ye I get that, but like, you say "Ich hab viel Geld" not "vieles Geld" (afaik 👀 )
So for uncountables, you don't really inflect based on gender
But like, let someone who knows their shit check that I'm not just spewing out bs here
@wary mango thank
Im trying to study the position of Nicht
this is difficult !!!
It usually is after the verb?

If you see something like A1, B2 or C1, these represent the proficiency of a speaker in a language they're not native in, and are called CEFR levels. They are valid for any language, not only German!
Roughly speaking, A levels are beginners and C levels are experts. Remember that CEFR level are self-assessed and indicative!
You can see more specific names and descriptions on the Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_Languages
🗨 How do I know what level I am?
If the table on Wikipedia is too generic for you, you can try using this one here:
https://rm.coe.int/168045bb52
Just check each column one at a time: if you can do all it describes, move to the next column. Your level is the highest where you can do the most things.
Alternatively, you can use this questionnaire to estimate your level more accurately:
https://www.laits.utexas.edu/fi/sites/laits.utexas.edu.fi/files/Self Assessment Checklist European.pdf
@solemn gull Isn't there a way I could save this messages like a personal archive in Discord?do u know?
du kannst in google keep
It would be legally problematic to allow users to download and store messages out of Discord, so no. If you need something, you'll have to copy and save it manually.

ich finde es ziemlich doof,

Man kann ja aber von außen nicht immer erkennen, ob es ein Rechtschreibfehler ist oder die Person wirklich nicht weiß, wie man das Wort richtig schreibt.
in diesem fall würde ich die wahrscheinlichkeit vom letzten fall unter 0.001% abschätzen

The dative case has a great number of usages, many of which are idiomatic, but is mainly used:

Alright I'll briefly switch to english. I very well know and accept that the genders are what about all of german grammar is based on. I however think that just because I do not know the gender of this one given word, it doesn't mean that I don't understand the grammar and logic behind it.
I might very well know that in genetive phrases the posessor's article changes from der and das to des and from die to der. I know that the strong inflection required me to add -er to the end of an adjective, when the noun in question is masculine.
However if I don't know the article, I should be treated like I don't understand the article and not like I don't understand the grammar
the articles are however a part of the grammar
Verständlich, shönen Tag noch!
tests measure your ability to use the language, and knowing the rules but not the gender is worth diddly because it means you can't put those rules correctly into practice
Some articles also appear multiple times, so a masculine nominative article can look the same as a dative feminine one
And then you can't know if you don't know the genders or not the cases etc etc
¯_(ツ)_/¯
der and den are classics for that
Though sure, sometimes you can tell that someone's just using the wrong gender but everything else is alright 🤷♂️
mm at the end of the day you can often get at what a learner is trying to say despite mistakes, but the goal of exams is typically 'richtiges deutsch' not just 'verständliches deutsch'
especially when you're in upper B level where they start really caring about adjective endings
kommt auf das Niveau der Prüfung an. Je niedriger, umso die Voraussetzungen und Erwartungen
joa
they're introduced early on but by B2 you're expected to know them through and through
also was ist dein Satz dalyl? Kann man sowas sagen?
"Je niedriger das Niveau, um so kleiner sind die Voraussetzungen und Erwartungen"
glaub ich
Hab viele Dinge absichtlich drin weglassen, weil ich müde bin

e.g. my b1 textbook is where genentive adjective declension is introduced
Hab kein Buch verwendet, also hab ich keine Ahnung, wenn man sowas lernen soll
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Concider it this way: a teacher needs to know what their students are capable of in order to prioritize education. If they concider them all incapable of the grammar due to poor test design, she'll need to concentrate more on that. If however they differentiate the ones that understand granmar but haven't learned the articles from the people who haven't learned the grannar yet, they can all be more efficient
I think you're missing the purpose of the exam
The exam is a measure of your skill, not individual hunks of separate grammar rule knowledge
Trust me mate I come from Finland
I mean, sure. They'll probably understand that from the test, but they'll still give you the shit grade
what has your country of origin got to do with anything?
i agree with carrots. teachers tend to know which parts you're messing up with
in the case of case, there are especially other indicators that show whether your issue is with case or gender.
E.g. word position in the sentence.
again you've missed the point where knowing the gender is a part of the grammar and they're assessing you on that just as much.
We aren't about grades, we are about learning
then you shouldn't be so salty about a poor grade
accept that you need to learn the genders to do better in the next exam
Anyway. Wie war dein Tag?
ziemlich okay aber soweit unproduktiv
Es gibt noch Zeit was auch immer zu tun, oder?

Wow, how did you catch that? Do you check the pfp of everyone that joins?
yes
Nice work
Entschuldigung
Pinging them in public kinda defeats the purpose of not having their pfps be seen by everybody though 👀
they won't see them if they log on after the change, or refresh discord
That's beside the point. If they warned them privately the only people who would see them would be those who check new people's pfps, which are few. If they ping them here explicitly about it people will check them out who normally wouldn't do it. By the time they change the pfp or get banned tons of people will have seen it
fair enough
That's a very good point.

Guys
Specially C levels and natives
When is the best time to learn the german cases?
Dative, Acusative, Genitive and Nominative
Should I study them all at once being at A level?
meiner Meinung nach ja...die deutschen Fälle spielen eine Schlüsselrolle in der Grammatik
the best time to learn German cases is now
you cannot know German without learning cases
especially the genetive case can even change the meaning of certain sentences
the accusative and dative not as much, but they're still crucial to fluent speaking and writing
yeah the genetive, if you want to learn posession first
but i recommend learning the cases with context and vocabulary, since many verbs are tied to certain cases
Manchmal schon. Und manchmal klingt es eben komisch wenn man sie falsch verwendet. Zum Beispiel:
Ich stelle mich vor
Ich stelle mir vor
Die beiden sind offenbar richtig, aber die Bedeutungen sind halt anders ^^
ah ja stimmt,
Ich stelle mich vor means "I present myself"
and Ich stelle mir vor means "I imagine"
as a total beginner, don't start out with genitive please
ok
the recommended order is nominativ -> accusative -> dative -> genitive
but if you wanna form basic possessive sentences
you don't want that as a beginner
Thank you!
then you probably should learn a bit of genetive
Those are very confusing for me! I will learn it
Aber Genitiv ist einfacher als sowohl Akkusativ als auch Dativ zu verstehen
really? i mean when i learned russian i straight up jumed into the genetive and yes it was fun
genetive in russian is a whole different league btw
maybe, but it's the least pracitcal in everyday speech
i mean the cases even change depending on the number attached to a noun 💀
@torpid flint I am very interested in learning Russian because I love russian literature, are the cases the same?
o h
Kommt drauf an, wo man herkommt, oder wo man wohnt, was Genitiv angeht. Wo ich wohnte zum Beispiel habe ich den Genitiv fast jeden Tag gehört. Ich habe meinen Gastbruder auch mal gefragt, ob er Genitiv oder eine von-Konstruktion schöner findet, und für ihn in den meisten Fällen ist Genitiv schöner, aber er meinte auch, es kommt eben drauf an, was man genau sagen möchte, und dem stimme ich vollkommen zu.
no there are more cases in russian, the accusative and dative have a similar function as in german
and declension in russian doesn't relate to articles (there are no articles in russian)
declesion is expressed by suffix changes
How... how are there.. no articles...
sure but we're talking about total beginners here
try to introduce yourself or ask for the way using only genitive
the cyrillic alphabet takes a lot of practice to be able to read and write fluently
it's not hard, just different
Ok
it takes time to get used to it
Hmm I see
you don't need no damn articles to make a point
Ich vergesse wohl wie es ist, Anfänger in Deutsch zu sein
"Girl went to school"
Hmm I see
"I eat bread"
But how do you know if they ate like, one loaf of bread or ten?
He picked up basketball
Hmm
through adverbs and numbers lol
I heard that mandarin (Chinese) also doesn't have articles
Aber die Schrift
And was russian fun to learn?
if you learn russian you will realize how useless articles are
Hmm, interesting
i still learn it and it will open your eyes
a completely new way of looking at human communication
I enjoy this very much
I am brazillian
So portuguese is my first language
Learning english, and now the process of learning german, is very eye-opening for me
Also, Russian doesn't use "is" often
Even more with german, since english grammar is not that complicated
I can speak six languages. After a while, you get used to learning languages.
How does it work, then?
so people usually say "Bread on table"
Hmm, interesting
But os that like, a rule or something informal?
context and cases make up the entire meaning of a sentence
Ooh
it's normal syntax
the word "is" is only reserved for scientific and political texts
Damn... interesting
but in formal and casual speech, it's always emitted
And is the normal word order Subject-Verb-Object?
another example "This girl fat"
As in "I eat bread"?
yes
I'm so sorry
So would "I am German" be "I German" in Russian, translated literally?
LMAAO
but the word order is free
I think they use "am", but specifically not the third person "is"
Hmm, I see.
so you can say "I saw girl" or "I girl saw" to change the stress of a word
Hmm, interesting
it changes the meaning in a way
It was hard not to read "I saw girl" with a Russian accent. Kek.
I girl saw implies that you're the only one who saw the girl
because the stress is on the "saw"
they also don't use "am"
Portuguese is a complicated language because, for example, to say "Give me a ciggarette", you can say "Me dê um cigarro", "Dê-me um cigarro" "Dá-me um cigarro", etc
Damn... confusing
I, Robot.
"I man from Russia"
genious one
Oh... is that why the russian stereotyped accent lacks the "to be" verb?
Yep.
mindblown
And it lacks articles because most Slavic languages also lack articles.
it sounds stupid in English, but it's the way Slavic languages work
No no it doesn't, it just is different
For me it is crazy for example to say some sentences in German that the verb goes at the end
As in "Ich bin zu müde, um schlafen zu gehen"
In Japanese, the verb always goes at the end.
Really? Russian doesn't use "to be"?
If you asked me to translate from english I would write "Ich bin zu müde zu gehen um schlafen"
They use the pronoun instead?
yes
Huh, I see.
So it's a SVO language, like "I rice eat"?
the pronoun can't be emitted at the beginning of a sentence
@stray nymph Yep.
I didn't know that. I thought it would be like Polish where the pronoun is the thing dropped, but it's the opposite.
it can though be emitted after a coma (if the subject is clear and if the compound sentence has a "helper word" like и)
Polish is the only slavic language that doesn't use Cyrilic script, I believe
no, also czech and slovak, slovenian, croatian and bosnian
serbian is mixed
Dammn
Yeah, Serbian somehow uses both.
I've read somewhere that this is because of religious influence
The Catholic Church uses latin, the Ortodox used Cyrilic
that's because polish uses the word "to be"
Yes, that's what I'm saying.
They do need to keep at least one of them. You can't just say "German" and somehow have it mean "I am German". Kek.
in Russian there is the "to be" word, but is usually used to emphasize the existence or something or to show posession
But, for example, portuguese speakers can understand spanish speakers and vice-versa, with some difficulty. Can german speakers understand norwegian or danish? And can a russian understand bielorusian or polish, or ucranian?
example, Кошка есть "Cat IS", meaning that it's certain that the cat EXISTS
hmm interesting
or У меня есть кошка "lit. By me is cat" meaning I have a cat
@stray nymph Dutch is the closest language to German, and German speakers can understand it with some difficulty. Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are too distantly related, so you can't understand them without learning them.
It can be complicated, Marx.
Hmm, I see
i forgot to mention that russian uses "to be" in the past tense
Because you may have, for example, a dialect of a language that is really close to a dialect of another language, and they might be close to mutually intelligible.
ooh
Even if the standard languages aren't.
So, to specify time they say the verb?
but in present tense it's always emitted if not emphasized or posessive
Dutch is like "I think I get the meaning of the sentence more or less", while with Swedish or Danish it's more like "I think one of those words are slightly similar to German". LOL.
In Mandarin I believe there are no tenses or conjugation
You simply say "He is yesterday there" to say that "He was there"
ooh I see
Similarly to how portuguese is similar to italian
Nah, Italian and Portuguese are much closer.
ooh
I think it's more like if you try to understand French without learning it at all.
You'll only understand a word or two here and there.
If you speak Portuguese.
got it
another example of "to be" is
"I thought that (there) not no rice" (literally translated)
"But, rice IS (here)"
^used as emphasis in present tense
Hmm, interesting
English is actually technically closer to German than German is to Swedish, but English is a weird case since it has an enormous amount of Latin and French words.
Meine Muttersprache ist erwähnt worden 👀
oh yeah and by the way "нет" works both as "no" and "isn't"
A fun fact here: the main reason for the latin/french influence on English words is the fact that England and French developed their languages from, respectively, anglo-saxon and latin while being at war frequently
@fringe tartan Ich habe nur gesagt, dass ich nur ein paar Wörter auf Schwedisch verstehen kann und fast nie ganze Sätze. Es ist einfach zu weit entfernt vom Deutschen.
"Кошки тут нет" literally means "Cat here no" which means "There is no cat here"
For example during the 100 years war
Um, no.
I've studied the history of the English language, so I would know...
It's because of the Norman conquest in 1066.
The Normans spoke French and brought their language with them.
😮
Well, there were later borrowings, but that's where the bulk of French words in English come from.
Hmm, I see
It's also interesting how negation in Slavic languages is expressed through the genetive case
as if the noun is owned by nothingness
It is a very strong influence, I think about like 40% english words come from latin/french
Direct borrowings from Latin were more of a 16th century thing, though.
Hmm, because of Renaissance period?
They went overboard with so-called Inkhorn terms because they wanted to sound as smart as possible. Kek.
lmaao
So basically they were like: "Let's use as many Latin words as possible to show how educated we are."
Hmm, this is very interesting
Many of those Latin words fell out of use, but many others have stayed around to this day.
interesting fact is that pretty much all latin loanwords can be replaced by German words in German
@torpid flint do the names of the days of the week in Russian come from planets or gods names?
for example "substituieren" can be replaced by "ersetzen"
they come from slavic folklore
Interesting
germanic days are the ones from the gods
and what you do for a living? @midnight coral
Not only the germanics, most latin ones too (they come from Latin-Greek divinities)
@stray nymph Speaking of days of the week, I find it really interesting that Portuguese is the only Romance language that doesn't use the names of the Roman gods for them.
but most of the days of the week are numbers actually
@dreamy sparrow I'm still a student.
the ethymology of friday in Russian can be traced back to the number 5
And the reason is the influence of Catholic church on the ecclesiastic latin
пятница = пять = 5
Which (for some reason) affected portuguese development
und weißt du schon, als was du später mal arbeiten wirst?
no wait
interesting
wednesday in russian is literally just "middle one"
In German too!
middle week
saturday is obviously biblical
subbota
sabbath
monday (in Russian) can be translated as "the day after last week"
In latin languages (romanic, spanish, italian, french, latin, etc) they have names of Roman gods such as Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, etc
And in portuguese, specifically, the names come from ECCLESIASTIC latin, because of Catholic church influence on the development of the language
in arabic monday means "the second day"
the names for tuesday and thursday are also just weird forms of numbers 2 and 4
So the names come from "First festivity" etc
Festivity in Church praying
Mass, i believe
Ich werde wahrscheinlich Übersetzer werden.
and dienstag is in arabic "the third"
sunday on the other hand is unkown to me
i will look up its ethymology
neis
yes but in russian
Ooh
воскресенье means the resurrection of christ lol
sunday means in arabic one
derived from it i mean
Hmm
interesting how both weekend days are biblical in Russian
Guys, I have this difficult test tomorrow about Modernism Literature
so i'll have to prbably pull an all-nighter
see yall later

dont worry haha

i'm going too
lol
it is saturday in arabic
sunday: erster Tag
monday: zweiter Tag
Tuesday: dritter Tag
Wednesday: vierter Tag
Thursday: fünfter Tag
Friday: Tag der Gesellschaft/Gemeinde
in Arabic
I had this epiphany recently, 'cause I speak a Slavic language, that the Russians call the week ''неделя'' (which means ''to do nothing'' and is used as Sunday in Bulgarian), so they're basically chilling the whole week and they lost the archaic (and imo more logical word) for week ''седмица'' (which derives from the word ''seven'' and is still used over here) and I have no idea why I find this etymological factoid interesting.
i just realized "недеља" has its roots from "не дела" aka no work/no deeds
Ich studiere auch englische Linguistik. Was haltest du insgesamt davon? @midnight coral

interesting lunes is Monday in my language
In Japanese it literally means 'Mon, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Fri'
@hot cloak What's your language
Filipino
Linguistically the language maybe similar to the Taiwanese tribes
Those native tribes have their own languages
oh?
as far as I know my language is part of the austronesian language

English is a germanic language with romance influence
That is, homogeneous to some Taiwan native tribes

hey anyone know any good resources to learn german
faq resources
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the courses here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469/

Hallo, woher kommst du?
@fair granite Don't post the same question in multiple channels please.

The bot caught it as spam, but in general, it's best to stick to only one channel.
Best channel for resource questions is #resources

faq present tense
Präsens (Present Tense)
When you use a verb in a sentence (or clause), you have to conjugate it (change the form) to match the subject of the sentence (or clause).
For example, in English, we write I eat but he/she eats. The verb has a different ending! The concept is the same in German, except German has more endings.
The first thing you need to know in order to conjugate verbs is: which ending fits which subject? Here is a simple verb “trinken” (to drink) as an example:
trinken
ich trinke
du trinkst
er/sie/es trinkt
wir trinken
ihr trinkt
sie trinken / Sie trinken
(Note: the conjugation for sie (they) and Sie (formal you) is always the same)
Vowel/Stem Changes
There are a few variations and exceptions, but the most important is vowel changes (also called stem changes). Some verbs get a vowel change, which only affects the du and er/sie/es forms of the verb. (However, modal verbs and wissen have their own special pattern, which also has a vowel change in the ich form.)
Example: ich schlafe, du schläfst
Other Changes
There are various other differences but I can’t describe them all here, so please read these websites or use Google to find more information: https://www.vistawide.com/german/grammar/german_verbs_present_tense.htm

Welche Sprache ist nicht schwierig?
@lethal urchin change your profile picture please
Das kommt darauf an, welche Sprache deine Muttersprache ist
Also alle Sprachen sind schwierig.
Alle sind leicht mit der passenden Motivation
Das ist eine gute Perspektive. Ich bin eben pessimistisch.
Ich liebe es zwar, Deutsch zu lernen, aber das bedeutet nicht unbedingt, dass absolut gar nichts dran schwierig ist.
Oh hallo!
genau. 🤔
umm ok

@prisma pulsar change your profile picture please
