Every single language you learn (assuming the resources/people exist for it to be possible) will involve immersion to a significant extent.

I'm mainly referring to content which isn't strictly based on practice. For example literature and social media in the language you are learning in.

In my case I use literature and news to learn German. I understand a plethora of words, sentences and meanings of contexts that are spoken/written in German despite not needing to translate much of it. The main problem I seem to have is the confidence/knowledge whether or not I actually learn from this type of immersion, hence why I'm asking you if you have experienced this form of immersion and if you have.

It depends a lot on the language. Like I have seen people argue that you can skip studying German grammar by using immersion learning, which is really not true. And usually their argument is that "but people do that when they learn English", which I certainly agree seems like a common thing. So basically, it seems like it works for English, but not for German.

All the stuff you mentioned though is true. Using media, especially literature, is a great way to build vocab. Talking to people and watching modern TV shows will teach you a lot of things like idioms, phrases, how people talk irl.

But you can't learn everything about the language that way.

I'm starting to have that mindset too. Maybe its because I haven't been exposed to German long enough to know how things are, but my experience has been underwhelming so far. I've learned words like "giessen" and "soweit" and news related terms, but besides that it just feels like recognizing stuff instead of learning it, therefore missing out on holding on to that feeling of what the term means and how proper grammar works.

Thanks for sharing your thought on it btw. I've mainly heard language gurus talk about how "immersion" and all that is the way to learn languages, but with German, I feel like I can't miss out on grammar rules

Yeah, absolutely. And I think a part of it is that a lot of people are really anxious about the idea of grammar. For some reason, there's a strong myth that people hold that grammar is the "hard way" to learn and that they want to find an "easy way". But the reality is, learning the grammar rules is the easy way. You can learn things in 5 minutes that improve your language skill immensely that would take months/years to figure out by "immersion".

I think it's important to just approach it with an open mind and not assume it will be hard or a lot of work.

The grammar rules are basically two things:

• cheat codes to simplify otherwise complicated language concepts
• a structure/foundation, that you build up as a beginner, and then it helps you sort all your new knowledge that you gain from immersion

So instead of the language being a crazy random blur of words and terminologies, you convert it into neat sections of info that you can easily process.

And then there are some things you can't learn by a rule and that's just unfortunate reality of life.

Yeah, this is an idea a lot of people are misled by. The reality is that adults don't learn like babies. And again, you can learn a lot of these grammar concepts in a few minutes or days at most. Babies take years, even a decade, to learn some of that stuff.

And of course there's a reason why you can't apply a CEFR level to a native speaker. Many things about learning as a native speaker vs foreign language learner are all different.

The person in the video talked about how there are strong declensions and weak declensions. He made the point that, in the case the article does not have a strong declension, the adjective declension has to have a strong declension.

In other words: if the article has a weak declension (like the nominative masculine indefinite article "ein"), the adjective must have a strong declension ("-er" in this case)

There's another way to view the pattern that some other people prefer, which is that the noun phrase as a whole should have the hard ending somewhere.

So in this case it's being represented by the noun ending instead.

So let's say you take heißen Kaffees as your genitive. The noun is der Kaffee. In genitive, it gets the ending -s to represent genitive. So the adjective forms are:
des heißen Kaffees
eines heißen Kaffees
heißen Kaffees

The "s" on Kaffees is still there when you remove the article so the -es of genitive is still being reflected and doesn't need to be moved onto the adjective.

In that case, it doesn't break the rules you described. Instead, the only exceptions is that it's the only declension where the strong ending is represented twice.

Actually dative plural also does the same thing.
