I have been using Duolingo to learn German. I started yesterday. Is there any better apps than Duolingo?
Memrise is pretty good for building vocabulary. I'd recommend this course: https://app.memrise.com/course/198332/all-german-words-with-audio/

@timber fog @undone hemlock thank you very much
Hey everyone, does anyone have any resources for learing for beginners, ive been trying the one just above this text but i was wondering if anyone had any others?
faq nicos
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the courses here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469/
oki, thank you base

Please make sure to read Part 1 before starting Part 2!
1: Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)
2: Subordinate clause word order
3: Dative case
4: Dative verbs
5: Verbs with two objects (e.g. geben)
6: Prepositions (accusative, dative, and two-way)
7: Spoken past tense (Perfekt)
8: Written past tense (Präteritum)
9: Genitive case
10: Relative clauses
11: Adjective declension
- Make sure to practice writing and reading simple texts
- Some of these concepts are confusing to start with, so it’s a good idea to ask for help in #questions when you’re unsure
- You should use a declension chart to help with declension to start with, because you won’t be able to memorize it straight away
- After you feel confident with creating sentences, you can start learning the adjective declension properly by using the command >faq adjective declension and reading the guide provided

FAQ not found. I found the following similar entry: Prepositions of Place Part 1.
faq Prepositions of Place Part 1
Generally you use the preposition nach when talking about going to countries, cities or directions, for example:
(1) Ich fahre nach Berlin. (I’m going to Berlin.)
(2) Ich gehe nach Westen. (I’m going west.)
(3) Ich fahre nach Deutschland. (I'm going to Germany.)
‼ Note that nach does not work with countries or regions that take an article. In this case you need to replace it with in, for example: Ich fahre in die Schweiz. (I’m going to Switzerland.)
In addition to that you will need to use auf for specific islands, for example: Ich fliege auf die Balearen. (I fly to the Balearic Islands.)
Here you can find a map with countries that take an article: http://i.imgur.com/QRFA2WI.png
🌟 nach is also idiomatically used in nach Hause gehen (to go home)
The preposition zu is used when talking about going to people, or places with a proper name, for example:
(4) Ich gehe zu ihm. (I go to him.)
(5) Ich gehe zum [zu dem] Arzt. (I go to the doctor.)
(6) Ich gehe zu Aldi. (I go to Aldi.)
You use in if you will end up inside a place or location, for example:
(7) Ich gehe in die Kirche. (I go to church.)
(8) Ich gehe ins [in das] Kino. (I go to the cinema.)
You use auf if you will end up on something, or for going to formal events, for example:
(9) Ich klettere auf den Berg. (I climb up the mountain.)
(10) Ich gehe auf die Toilette. (I go to the toilet.)
(11) Ich gehe auf eine Party. (I go to a party.)
🌟 When in doubt, use zu, since you can often replace in and auf with zu, for example:
(12) Ich gehe zur Kirche. (I go to the church.) [but not necessarily inside]
(13) Ich gehe zu einer Party. (I go to a party.)
‼ However, note that you cannot replace zu with in if it would be absurd to speak of going inside:
(14) Ich fahre in die Kirche. (I drive into the church.)

hi guys can someone help me with this cheat sheet i found
i made it more readable here in my version
but i kinda had to just guess what the random endings meant
It's a bit overly complicated.
I mean you can reduce the information a lot more than that.
woah
would you happen to have something like that
because i regularly look to these
and i keep it as a wallpaper so that i dont have to constantly search for the specific one
The der, -e, all that stuff.
The A B and G columns seem decent. Although I think it's easier to make a separate pronouns chart or something, but that's up to your personal preference.
i used this to figure it out but i am not even sure if that is right 😩
yeah you are right but i just wanted it all in one compact space and this was the best i found
i think i found it on google
🥺 thank you!
Do you use iPhone?
How much you want to minimize it also depends on how well you understand it and personal preference. Do you want me to show you the most minimal way I can think of? Or do you rather something nice with a fair bit of info?
minimal! so that i can remember the words and not the logic if you get me
What do you mean by remember the words?
like the cases for example
i woundnt need the part about when its used but more the ending
s
Oh, yeah, I'm only making something for the declension part.
I'll just show you.
You could minimize it to something like this.
But you would have to know how to use it.
I'll add a key to it.
thank you!
@marsh turret Does this work for you?
If you don't know declension, it may be hard to understand, but if you do know it, it should be really easy and not much info to memorize.
yeah it works!
Yes
You can tap any words in safari and tap lookup.
does anyone have goethe start-1 deutsch practice tests?
can you please share links?
damn you have literally every resource one asks for.
chickie resource god confirmed

this is such an excellent channel
ive done this, anything extra?
Does anybody else find texts in Deutsch Perfekt magazines a lot harder than what's stated?
agreed, but I think that is the point. It shouldn't be a lot harder though, do you have an example of a specific article?
anyone knows an alternative to readlang and learn languages with youtube netflix but for firefox?
or on the ios
do y'all know any software that can help make a keyboard shortcut to type umlauts and other german characters on a non-german keyboard
faq keyboard
Being able to type German letters is quite important!
- Schon = already. Schön = beautiful.
- Mutter = mother. Mütter = mothers.
How to? There are several options.
🔸 US International layout: if you're using a US keyboard or a keyboard based on it, the transition is very easy! Everything stays as you know it, except for some symbol keys like ~, ` or , which can be pressed to add accents. For example `` + a = ä. You can also do RightAlt + s = ß.
To use US International on Windows, look for the Region & Language options and switch your selected keyboard layout to US International.
🔸 If you're on Mac, on most systems you can press and hold a letter to show several variants including umlauts. You can type ß by pressing Option + B.
🔸 Use a program like AutoHotkey to automatically type the symbols you need when you type certain shortcuts: https://www.autohotkey.com/
See the next page for more alternatives.
This explains some options.
There's an autohotkey script pinned in this channel which you can use if you go for that option.

can someone suggest me a structured grammar learning book /book series or a website?
nicos weg- website by deutsche welle
basic german- textbook for grammar
faq resources
read about them more here
thank you
do you have a book series that you can suggest?
i kinda just wanna review
you mean textbook series or just a story book or something
if you ask me ive used basic german like 1/3rd of the way and it is really really excellent
textbook
what level will it get you at?
or what levels of german grammar does it cover?
probably upto a2
is there a second book in the series or something cuz I aim to get to c1
there's intermediate german by the same authors
as a successor yeah
and then if you go on r/German's wiki
youll find a bunch of books for b2 and above
thank you so much
do check the resources of the server
theyre in one link
there are advanced book recs as well
and youre welcome!
forgive my a1 ass who is living in the future
do these books have exercises
or are they just theory+examples
This is an alternative resource for vocabulary for the Goethe A1+A2 word lists
It's a text about the circus from 2018 supposedly on B1 level. I found 60 words I don't know or am not quite sure about. It's interesting because I did DSD I nearly perfectly so I do have a B1 certificate, I took part in the competition which was supposed to be B2/C1 level and did all right, and just recently took an entrance exam for Linguistic college to study German and scored 39/40.
do you know a legit resource that explains the core of German cases? What I'm looking for is a deeper take at the case structures, something like a more linguistic - technical approach, thanks!
Hammers has a grammar workbook too. I also recommend schubert verlag's a-grammatik and b-grammatik and c-grammatik which has both explanations and tons of exercises
thank you!
This new edition of Practising German Grammar provides you with varied and accessible exercises for developing an in-depth and practical awareness of German as it is spoken and written today.
Whether used independently or as the ideal companion to the new sixth edition of the widely acclaimed Hammer’s German Grammar and Usage, this fourth edit...
is it this book?
yep
thanks :D

Does anyone have any good videos such as ted talks which are in German and have both German and English subtitles also the name of any good books to learn German from?
I searched Ted Talk and TedX deutsch in YouTube and found some videos with German and English subtitles.
I've tried that but many have just German, or it's German auto generated unfortunately
The Ted Talk website offers videos with subtitles in many languages, but unfortunately it doesn't look like their search function allows you to find videos originally in German easily.
I'll try their website thanks@ebon cloud Any tips for searching for videos on certain topics in German through the YouTube algorithm
I just use keywords in German (and then check the video for subtitles). The resource list also has a few channels listed with interesting videos.
Thanks a lot
Recently found this small, but great Youtube channel where she reads fairy tales, discusses German cultures, and other cool stuff in German. Her videos are for all different levels. She also does speak entirely in German with German subtitles, but she speaks slowly and will have pictures and drawings to help you understand vocab and such. Really great videos and should definitely take a look! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsYGAmiWIvOjvT9f1sgQXRw/featured

Ja, sorry, ich war mir nicht sicher, wie ich das am besten hinzufügen könnte.
Weil es nicht kostenlos ist.
Oh wow that natürlich German channel is exactly what I've been looking for, nice one.
does nicos weg teach you nouns and words. or does it just let you practice your listening
@carmine canopy Yeah, each lesson comes with exercises and a list of new vocab/phrases.
I wouldn't just use that for learning vocab though.
what do you reccomend for vocab
There are a lot of good lists on Google in general. Just search "1000 Most Common German Words" and slowly work on the list. I also really recommend Duolingo for vocab. I know some people tend to criticize Duolingo, but I find it a great resource for vocab and practicing basic grammar skills.
thanks for the reply !
Should I just read a book instead of using duolingo
It doesn’t go into grammar much
duolingo isnt great for german
i reccomend if youre using software, to use rosetta stone or babbel
Alright
Do you guys think busuu is good for german?
I´ve heard a lot of good things about babbel. But isn´t it a paid resource?
Duolingo is dog water for german.
Why tho
faq duolingo
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.
If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .
are either of these free?
i noticed sometimes it is hard to direcrtyl translate words because they need context
Yeah, sometimes you'll need to do extra digging to find exact meanings or examples. There's a lot of German-English dictionaries out there that can be helpful
And yeah, Duolingo is definitely not the best software for languages. I mostly use it for basic vocab and to practice concepts, but otherwise, just googling grammar topics more in depth works for me. I'm just broke and want to save money, so don't want to spend a lot on Babbel/Rosetta Stone etc.
I also use Anki for index cards and take the vocab from Duolingo, Youtube videos, etc and study them on my own time
Memrise or an Ankideck for vocab. It gets a bit boring, but it does work if you stick with it. I'd recommend this course: https://app.memrise.com/course/198332/all-german-words-with-audio/
any opinions on clozemaster? is it a good substitute for anki?
I like it as a general vocabulary review because the words are in context.
The most recent update for Clozemaster really improved the vocab lists imo. Only downside to me is that premade vocab lists can be less effective. With Anki, you can choose your own vocab to study and make your own examples. I would recommend Clozemaster more to people who already have a good foundation of vocabulary but want a refresher.
I don't think so. Learning by frequency is good, but you also need niche vocabulary to pass exams or talk about certain things.
Additionally, I don't think being tested only four times about a word (assuming it is right each time) is a good test of one's memory- not to mention that you can easily game the prompt by testing the first letter without submitting the answer.
It's useful to an extent, but I think for some people such usefulness would be outlived.

this is extremely good for english speakers
This is quite specific, but is anyone aware of a good audio resource (for listening in the car or during idle time) where the difficulty of concepts covered starts at a relatively lower level, and then gradually increases?
A lot of podcasts I’m finding or have been recommended seem to be parked at one particular level
It's not ordered by level of difficulty, so it's not exactly what you're asking, but I love listening to this while running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk2z125YDeI
Repeatedly listen to the pronunciation of native speakers, and it will really improve your listening level!

Can someone point me to a solid non-learning book list / reading list based on level (anything between B2 and C1). It doesn't have to be written by a German speaking author, meaning that translations are also welcome. I was thinking about reading DUNE in German, but that might be a tidy bit too hard for me at the moment. Thanks in advance.
Hey man I think you should really read dune. I did the same thing a while back(5 months I think) with a book series I wanted to read(Zauberschiffe) and it was a rocky road but I went in about 4 months from 10-20 pages per day translating something like 7 words per page to 70(today) translating like never. It's worth the effort. I recommend Anki cards for the things you want to remember (I have like 4000 cards atm)

Best option is making your own decks based on words you want to know. You can take cards out of existing decks to make new ones, if you want.

Hi there. Hope is the right place to ask. Yesterday I joined your server and I admire your wonderful idea with helping German therefore, I would like to share some materials as well.
Some time ago, I have subscribed to GermanTakeaways and they sent me every week a mail with materials. Pretty sure I have them all.
Would be helpful for this server?
If yes, would love to share and also would appreciate if I could receive instructions in sharing (this is my first experience with servers)
Thanks, Roseline! We're always happy to get resource recommendations. Feel free to post links or suggestions in this channel any time. The only thing to keep in mind is that you can only share things which follow the server rules (and Discord Terms of Service), so no pirated content or anything.

@carmine canopy Just to show you how it works, next time you want to suggest a resource for the doc, you can write the command like I just did above.
That will add it to a list so it's easier for us to go through and add stuff.
And if you're interested, we also have some more verb + prepositions lists in the resource list, under "Vocabulary" section.

Hi! I hope it is ok, that I ask this question here. Do anyone know of an international community for people interested in Germany? Maybe something like an association?
Am 8.9.2007 wurde das Video im 3sat-Zelt aufgenommen und am 22.09.2007 auf dem 3sat ausgestrahlt.
Das Lied stammt aus dem Album "Radio".
Viel Spaß beim Sehen und Anhören. ;)
@timid sierra
perhaps r/Germany is what your looking for. but it's not an association rather a forum.
Thank you for your suggestion, but it was not quite what I was looking for. But I will try to hear them if they know of any 😊
Perhaps it would be better to ask in #archived-culture-study-visa

Do you only want subtitles or full german? @vagrant dock

It can get really boring, but if you stick with it daily it works well.
can someone recommend me good free online websites for learning German.
and also some paid online courses or books
For free stuffs, check the list on the pin. https://bit.ly/gladresources dw.com's courses are usually recmmended.
For paid courses, check local teachers or Goethe institute/language school in your city. I personally think online German courses are overpriced.
thank you so much
I recommend Dino lernt Deutsch https://books.learnoutlive.com/category/language-learning/german/dino-lernt-deutsch/ if you’re not into children books.
Children books are great for beginners.
i want to start with children books
Did you check the link at the description of this Channel? There are a lot of resources there. I’m not sure about children books but there are tons of beginner materials in that link.
ok
Hello everyone! I am an absolute beginner in German. So would you guys recommend me any language learning app that I can start my journey with? BTW, I have checked the resources list about German. It will be such a great reference for my learning process. Whoever created that earned my respect 🙏 👏
Good place to start: https://www.vhs-lernportal.de/
Appreciated. One question though: Is it completely free? I think I gotta register for that platform?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's completely free. The registration helps you track progress and they actually have some teachers that correct some of your exercises.
Wow! Thank you so much then. I will register for it and have a try. ❤️
I'd also recommend a Memrise course like this or an Anki deck to boost your vocabulary: https://app.memrise.com/course/198332/all-german-words-with-audio/
also completely free
Feel free to check out this. It's pretty popular with beginners.
Really appreciated. I will definitely check this out 😌👍
Looking to expand my vocabulary since I got a good grasp on grammar, anywhere anyone can suggest? I got a few ideas but wanna take in as much as possible

Hi everyone. Does somebody know some good resources for studying for a German certification exam (B1-B2)?
best memrise course for learning german from A1-B2 for practice
hat jemanden hier das anki 5000 wörter flashcard benutzt?
Yes, I do use it.
to those of you who actually learned to speak in german for free online: how? textbooks just don't work for me, and listening is super confusing. i don't know where to even go.
my goal is a1 by the end of the year .is that doable?
i'm just sorta lost
Start with this https://a1.vhs-lernportal.de/ it has a nice progression, completely free
Add an Anki deck or Memrise course for vocab.
is there a way to throw X amount of words/day into an anki deck?
should a1 be reasonable by end of year?
absolutely, you can get even farther than A1
I'm personally using this Memrise course https://app.memrise.com/course/198332/all-german-words-with-audio/
it all depends how much free time per day you have, and how consistent you can be
if you can't be consistent by yourself, highly recommend u get a teacher
i want to assess myself with the cefr at the end of the year.
i can easily study for an hour or two/day.
is there audio playback for the words?
No, unless I didn't notice it.
hmm ok thanks for clarifying
I have completed A1 and A2 and then I stopped studying German for around 7 months ... I am back now, but I realized that my current speaking level will not allow me to join B1.1 course and I don't want to re take A2.2
What do you recommend?
What options do you have?
yes , please help me out
ich hatte eine sehr schlechte Erfahrung mit dem anki set xd
ich versuchte alle wörter zu lernen, aber die verben (meistens) haben viele bedeuntungen, und man muss von verb bis verb alle bedeutung zu finden, um richtige nutzung der verben.
und ich nehme vieeeel zeit mit denen
ziet, die ich nicht habe xd
you could practice speaking in voice chats here maybe?
hi, does anyone have any resources for plurals?
resource https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Deutscher+Volkshochschul-Verband Apps for the VHS courses, free and you can download them for offline use.
Thank you, your resource suggestion has been submitted!
danke christian
will the DW german course get me through a1?
ya
it's good, but use other resources alongside it. Read a lot, listen to a lot, etc
That's true for any course though
is there a clear roadmap for a1?
If you look in the resource list, you can find some resources that show vocab and grammar for specific levels.
You can use that as a rough guideline.
And then, like Citrox said, practice the skills a lot (reading, writing, listening, speaking) until you feel like you meet the criteria.
You can also check the Goethe A1 sample exams (free).

no membership needed or anything else

Do you know any good resources where I can find pairs "english sentence" - "german sentence"?

I would love to learn the conditional tense as my friend says its easy and I think it will be useful to learn before i do in class, anyone have any resource for it?
Honestly, not that much is different for German. I ended up seeing sollte and würde before I knew what’s going on. A little research on German modal verbs should be fine and it’ll better prepare you.

does anyone recommend a complete book for A1? I've checked out all the resources but they're all a bit different from each other

i am reading Starten wir for my A1
https://www.hueber.de/sixcms/media.php/36/7480-63_001_01_deutsch_kompakt.pdf
Not a complete book, but a compact guide you may find useful.

faq study vocabulary
Study Vocabulary
Let’s take a look at differences in meanings between studieren, lernen, unterrichten, lehren and beibringen.
So what does studieren mean? Pfff, to study ofc, duh. Well, NO! Studieren is used only in the sense of studying at a university (or college).
(1) Ich studiere Mathematik. = “I study math as a uni student.”
To study as in to learn, to practice etc. translates to lernen.
(2) Ich lerne Mathematik. = “I’m learning/practicing math (for school).”
Now let’s compare the rest of the verbs - unterrichten, lehren and beibringen. They all mean to teach but are used in different contexts.
Unterrichten means to teach at an institute (school, language school) or some other formal way of teaching (private tutoring).
(3) Meine Schwester unterrichtet Deutsch am Goethe Institut = “My sister teaches German at the Goethe Institute.”
Lehren means to teach but as a tutor at a university.
(4) Herr Arrem lehrt die Kunst der Memes an der Nationalmemeuniversität Wien. = “Mister Arrem teaches the Art of Memes at the National Meme University of Vienna.”
Beibringen is more general, usually used with skills that you learn outside of an institute.
(5) Mein Vater hat mir beigebracht, wie man Fahrrad fährt. = “My father taught me how to ride a bike.”
🌟 Bonus verb üben: to practice is üben in German, not praktizieren.

Hallo leute... Favourite website or app to quickly check the gender of a word?
Google "der die oder das (word)"
Google will display a table with the correct gender and plural form.
Or else you can use simple dictionaries like duden.de - I don't think there‘s a fast website for that.
Yes i have been using duden for that
Now that I try with google, it seems faster because the "der die or das" gets autocompleted on the search bar once you used it
