You can configure it to do Alt+o = ulmaute o
Alt + anything normally won't type anything, so it doesn't break anything
if you add the script to the startup folder, then it will always be on from startup
Awesome, thank you so much @carmine canopy. Great information!
You're welcome 🙂
I know the pain, only it's worse for me as I'm using Linux
haven't found as easy a way to do that here yet ; (
Oi, Linux. Kudos to you. Even as an IT nerd, I can't stand it. Lol.
This autohotkey thing is great. I just wrote Tschüss and that made life so easy.
nice xD
I'm using kubuntu and it's pretty good
modern interface and easy to use for programming
I'd need to get a second os with windows though
for adobe programs
Ah, not big into programming. I do a lot with web code, not so much with software code (thank god...)
@carmine canopy don't know whag ubuntu supports exactly, I've put shift+capslock to change keyboard layouts and I switch between hr-us (which is basically us but can access croatian letters on altgr) and de
I saw bunch of de keyboards, maybe there's some combo that has umlauts on altgr
Or check dead keys and stuff like that, I think alt or altgr + " + a can produce ä
Or some keybinding like that
I just found it easier to switch whole keyboards than find new keybinding since altgr eas already used for croatian letters in my case
I use fedora with xfce, and xfce is rudimentary, so if it is available there, it definitely should be on bigger DEs in some form
Dig around :)
are you talking about compose key ?
that s different and frankly tiresome to use
I think there is a way to make Alt plus letter make ulmaut
eg like shift plus letter makes uppercase
you d need to edit system files with key mappings for that
there was a stackoverflow answer for that
@carmine canopy I forgot the name, but could be
However I haven't looked more into it since switching keyboards works perfectly in my case
For this us-croatian combo I just need altgr and hit the key, then instead of [ I get š and similar
Really nothing cumbersome
nah it is tiresome for me
the simplest way is 2 keys pressed together
and i d take nothing less xD
especially as windows users easily get that functionality
maybe one day i ll have enough rep and time
to maybe make SO bounty qs
so that some linux guru answers with tutorial on how to do it
Hihi, that's the way as well
Just to be clear, when I write in German I switch keyboard until I'm done, not just per letter
Brain mapping works 😂
I'd disagree about ignoring grammar being impossible. That approach worked pretty well for me when I was learning English.
@carmine canopy
But German is not English. Many people have been successful learning English this way, but in my experience, I have met pretty much no one who has been successful with this in German. Most people who try it just end up making the whole thing much more difficult for themselves.
It's been quite helpful to me. Let's agree to disagree 🙂
@misty valve I know people who learned German that passive way, but I don't know how good their German is (pronunciation is rough, my ears hurt 😂), nor how long it took them. Years or decades maybe. However they say that they don't know to write properly even if they watch TV, read newspapers and communicate about everyday things for most of their life.
So I'd say it depends how good you need it to be and how fast you wanna get there.
Personally I learn German as a form of therapy/unwinding xD
so not in any rush
If I were I think i'd just hire a tutor
with private tutor one could reach Intermediate/Upper-Intermediate lvl in about a year I think
@gilded pelican Somewhat, yeah, but there are 3 main issues:
- People who learn that way very often have awkward and broken German, which I assume most people don't aspire to
- Developing bad grammatical habits (e.g. ignoring gender) early on can be incredibly hard to fix later
- A lot of people simply never get that far in the first place because they don't have enough immersion to learn anything - even a lot of people who live in German speaking countries don't pick up the language despite living there a long time
I guess it's a personal decision. It's not as if there's a learning police that d arrest you if you are learning 'wrong'. And for those who have already learnt a foreign language before they would know what to look out for and what's the best way for them to proceed
You can call it a "personal decision" if you want. But as a moderator on this server, it's important to me to make sure all learners are aware of harmful mistakes they are at risk of making. This is one of the most harmful mistakes people make or consider.
that's kinda dogmatic
it certainly wasn't a harmful mistake for me
and I have little issues finding german content to consume
be it songs books or tv shows
And for those who have already learnt a foreign language before they would know what to look out for and what's the best way for them to proceed
This is also not quite true in this example. Because many people's first language was English, and as I said earlier, it isn't necessarily harmful when learning English. With German, it is.
If you say so. In the end everyone 'd pick a way they are most comfortable with and the first time learners would find the best way for them sooner or later
@misty valve I agree with you. Just wanted to say that I know some. They are used to get help from others for complex matters though.
However they moved here like 50 years ago or something, it's not that they had other options, and too poor/ without time to take classes
I wouldn't recommend anyone in this day and age to go through that route
I belive their German is broken, mine was non existent back then when I met them so I only can judge what they said, and they rated themselves poor
@carmine canopy I don't agree with you that passive way is the best way for anyone to learn German in order to be able to use it
However I do agree that it could be enough to be able to understand German media from the context
Or thinking that you understand it eg if you don't know about separable verbs and doing word by word translation, it could be very very frustrating to figure out the real meaning
I wouldn't recommend that to my worst enemy though 😂
I didn't say it's the best way. I think it's worth doing and it helps achieve progress. You can't go without active learning and active learning would speed things up a lot, but you can learn a lot passively too
idk I started out with english by listening to audiobooks (Harry Potter) and at first didn't even understand what chapter I'm on
I think best is to combine, especially after you tackle B1
and I think it was a phase transition of sorts
i didn't understand until i suddenly did
and then many phrases stuck with me and i started actively using them
and then modifying them but keeping the same structure
and i mean it's obvious that if you want to learn a language you would need to write, talk it yourself
so it's not as if it's an option not to do active learning
so obviously you'd end up with a combination
And you never heard tiny bit of English grammar eg in school before you started with Harry Potter?
oh i had some english at school and was probably elementary or something
it wasnt of much help
as i didnt understand stuff
Oh you're wrong about that.
I mean, that stuff on its own isn't worth anything. But you're brain remembered something and build onto that when you started with book
no lol
i dont know how they do it
but somehow schools manage to spend hours and not teaching students much
at least such was my experience
with school (yo - 17 yo)
probably taught me words like cat dog apple
aint much help when you listen harry potter
I know, I was in one. Considered my myself utterly stupid for English
yeah
i ended up eventually getting a private tutor for a year
that helped a lot
lvl uped to intermediate
However, that grammar exposure leaves trace
and from then it was just a matter of practicing
It was. However I belive that now you can see that recommendation of 'just read books it'll come to you' isn't quite right for someone who never touched the grammar of since language
Since not even you managed to learn English by media only
After learning one language, second one could be easier though
That's why it might work better for you now for German
And since you're here, I think you cannot avoid being exposed to grammar 😂 you're doomed 😂
I only told them passive learning is helpful
and they can reach a certain level by passive learning only
anyways it's pointless to argue
who cares anyways xD
if they see something doesn't work
they'll change strategies
won't know until you try and can't live 100% by other people's advices and experiences
and yeah now i certainly know what i need to do for german
as for grammar just grinding through 20-50 exercises on each grammar rule was very helpful to me
there was one very good textbook that was 80% grammar tasks and 20% tl;dr theory
What was the textbook?
russian since it's my first lang
and it's the english one
sorry should have been more clear
was the closest I could find for german
Can send you a .pdf in PM if you need
Thank you so much!
@misty valve I started setting up Anki and remembered that I don't actually have a list of A1 words. I've looked up at resources list, and there's two lists but they lack translations and plural. Seems like a lot of work to translate each one, find a plural and etc.
Is there a good list of already translated words?
Nevermind, found some else's deck online. That'll work, seems pretty good.
@bright trench You're meant to build up your own list slowly over time. That's the point.
Using someone else's deck kinda defeats the purpose.
But this way I'm guaranteed to learn A1 specific vocab?
I think the one I found is Goethe's.
Well, it's up to you.

this is one where you practice genitive with film titles @carmine canopy
danke
there's no single magic bullet resource that will get you all the way to fluency, but deutsche Welle is often recommended as a good starting point. especially their nicos weg series
I wouldn't really recommend them as a good starting point for learning to read. they use some outdated forms, and a tense that isn't really used in spoken german so a lot of the word forms would be unfamiliar to you. Very simply written childrens books, or language-learning orientated graded readers would do you better, especially things with illustrations, as to start off reading will be a very slow and arduous task. simple texts and images will help speed up the understanding of what you're reading
Hey guys I wanna ask... which one is better.. Netzwerk or Studio D? And could I use that for self-taught or still need a mentor? Thank you
I recommend Duolingo as a primary tool and Easy german as a secondary tool @carmine canopy
It's a;ll free

stimmt, danke
Ich empfehle die Bücher von Cornelsen A1-C1
@lilac echo Sorry but we're not allowed to support piracy here as it's against Discord ToS.
Some are but this person I pinged posted several Google Drives with pirated pdfs.
there are lots of good paid textbooks that are definitely worth the money.
you can also look to the goethe online library to be able to loan digital copies put free and legally
@carmine canopy Dark ist kein Film, aber es ist eine sehr sehenswerte Serie und es ist völlig auf Deutsch
Und hat sie 3 Staffeln also wäre sie viel langer als ein Film
@carmine canopy I've watched Mord mit Aussicht, it's available on arf I think but also Netflix
Krimi Komödie
Very naive but I'd say very good for hearing words
You can turn on german subs on Netflix for that series, and I'd say it is following the spoken part pretty good
But it was 3 years ago so don't hold me for it

Are there any good resources for learning Austrian German?
Because I always have trouble with the dialect
we all have trouble with that dialect - lol
Youtube recommended me some historic german interviews from the early 60s to early 00s, so I thought if anyone wants some eloquent german in the form of television interviews of famous politicians and other influential people to listen to, here you go (B2-C1 level might be required):

i wonder if theres anything like that for german?
ooh i looked it up and it looks nice

If you guys are interested in some German movies / tv series to practice your listening I would recommend Der Hauptmann and Die Welle. Also Dark,it's a great German series on Netflix. Like it's actually amazingly good,I binge watched the first season 1 in 1 day and season 2 the next day lol
Hey guys. I'm new at this server. I m lookin grammar exercises for A1 to B1... It can be book or website or something else. I hope didnt write the wrong channel. So whats your recommendations ?
have you had a look at the linked google doc in the description (and pins) of this channel?
I read it before. After your recomendation raed again and found the google document. Thanks
anyone happens to know any resources that could help me prepare for B2 test, exclusively for the test? i already use all sort of textbooks and stuff for learning but i've never taken any test before so i kinda don't know what to expect.
what type of test? e.g. goethe, dsh, testdaf, etc @formal schooner
@vague plaza goethe.
there are example and praxtice exams on their website for free. if you want you can also shell out for some od the prep textbooks out there
it's done in 4 sections - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
reading and listening consist of reading and listening to passages and answering questions regarding those. writing consists of some short reaponse / grammar focused questions and then you have to write a longer (2ish exam lined page) written response to a text prompt. speaking involves a prepared section, plus a spontaneous speaking with a partner section
you should be able to hold a 4 minute spoken presentation, and actively take part in an 8 minute spontaneous discussion
there are no dictionaries or other aides allowed in the ecam so all vocabulary you use you have to know by heart
here's one of the prep textbooks I know of:
https://www.klett-sprachen.de/mit-erfolg-zum-goethe-zertifikat-b2/t-1/9783126751544
and of course goethe's own prep material
https://www.goethe.de/de/spr/kup/prf/prf/gb2/ue9.html
@vague plaza have you taken it?
not officially. but my studienkolleg used goethe papers for their course exams
can't thank you enough for the help and for taking ur time 🙂 really appreciate it.
I only ask since I'm not sure if I could pass it. I'm the living embodiment of Schrödinger's CEFR level. 😉
you should be able to hold a 4 minute spoken presentation, and actively take part in an 8 minute spontaneous discussion
@vague plaza
Only 8 minutes?
How is with higher levels if you maybe know?
And how they feel about bad grammar?
If I can talk for 90 (just because time is up), although with bunch of errors, I wonder where that puts me
It is similar at C1.
They will specifically be marking you on things such as fluidity of speech, accuracy of grammar, and extent / suitability of vocabulary. i'll post the b2 marking scheme here
compared to C1
e.g. in B2 some mistakes in structure will still get you top marks whereas in C1 some mistakes will only get you middle marks. To get top marks the only mistakes you are allowed to make are occasional tiny ones.
Cool, thanks!
So my estimate that I'm B2 is probably right, in terms of 'ability to send the message and that correct message is received' :) and I definitely can talk for hours, depending on the topic 😂
b2 is however a bit harder in the sense that it's modular so you have to pass each section individually whereas c1 a 48 on speaking might still get you a certificate if you do well in the other components
ehhhh not so much. B1 is can send message and correct message is recieved
b2 is can send complex message, it is correctly received and won't get you laughed at by a rude native
Yup, I'd say B2 then definitely :) altough I didn't met rude native
how are your grammar mistakes then?
I didn't go to school :D (past a1.1) and don't learn words by heart, so cases are still weird and my pain point are past participles, plus when speaking I tend to do all verbs then other stuff 😂 and I've spent only several months on actively studying.
But topics are 'health insurance nuances how to ask for more money', doing hearing exams and explaining non trivial medical history for various conditions, or taking cat to the vet and explaining symptoms, or having issues with glasses and describing that
Oftentimes I don't check the vocabulary in advance, which would definitely help
But I'm not 'what did you ate yesterday' type of stuff :) actually I might be really bad with that since I don't need that, but I'm good at writing claim for insurance, or explaining why I have weird driver's licence to the Amt lady 😂
I was just surprised to see they ask for only 4 and 8 minutes of talking ability.
I definitely strongly recommend working on cases gender, and sentence structure.
by b2 you should be able to accurately decline articles and adjectives when you know the nouns gender. structuring your sentences like ich werde essen Wurst would also come under mistakes that actively disrupt. i.e. the second lowest marks cateogry
When you learn vocab, try to learn verbs with their prepositions and cases like: hinweisen auf + Akkusativ . It helps a lot!

@vague plaza definitely. By late B1 it was almost second nature to me, and as of now (I'm about half way to B2) I still make mistakes here and there, but small or very specific ones
Hi folks I’m looking for a penpal to talk to and practice my german with (intermediate lvl). Is anyone interested or knows how I can get one? Thanks 🙂
hope to do that as well, but still a beginner here :'(
it is great for pronunciation shadowing
Hi
I cannot open the pdf workbook of the modern german grammar in the resource list
since they're links to external sites there's nothing to be done about that unfortunately
Ah alright got it
you guys should check out language transfers course for german. That guy has not completed the course yet, but it is awesome. The way he explains cases is like the best I've ever seen. Although keep a translator open by your side because it is a podcast and sometimes the guy doesn't spell out every word. I'm telling you guys that it's worth it. Peace

try call radio podcasts. Basically radio shows that have people call in and say their opinion or a story about something, with the radio host listening and trying to solve their problem or just asking them questions about the situation

I really enjoy reading about grammar on my free time so I was thinking of reading through Hammer's Grammar Definition and Usage. Do you think I should read a german-written grammarbook instead?
Someone else can give you a better answer, I think it depends on your CEFR level... I don't think you should read a german-written grammarbook if you're only at A (1 or 2) level. If you're at B level I think you know enough vocabulary to understand most of the book and eventually expand your vocabulary knowledge
But it's also right that if you have enough grammar/vocabulary knowledge nothing says you can't read german books, even if you're at A level
I think that if you're feeling like you can do it, probably you can do it!
@quasi wing So decide you what to do 😉
I know there are a lot of online dictionary, but is there a offline dictionary (maybe a pdf) that has all (or most, anyway) the words in German, with the respective translation in english?
I watched the resources in the Google Doc of this channel, but I didn't see anything like this
Ah ok, thanks very much!

hey are there any good german scientific or psychological podcasts?
does mailab count as a podcast? it’s a youtube series and she does use visuals too but it’s mostly her speaking into a camera
i watch mailab already but thanks
@raven elm There's Green Rabbit, he does videos on psychology/philosophy and personality development. You could watch his (almost always pure discussion) videos also as a podcast substitute.
I can also recommend Doktorant, it's a smaller (currently inactive) youtuber, who also has some podcasts.

faq keyboard
Being able to type German letters is quite important!
- Schon = already. Schön = beautiful.
- Mutter = mother. Mütter = mothers.
How to? There are several options.
🔸 US International layout: if you're using a US keyboard or a keyboard based on it, the transition is very easy! Everything stays as you know it, except for some symbol keys like ~, ` or , which can be pressed to add accents. For example `` + a = ä. You can also do RightAlt + s = ß.
To use US International on Windows, look for the Region & Language options and switch your selected keyboard layout to US International.
🔸 If you're on Mac, on most systems you can press and hold a letter to show several variants including umlauts. You can type ß by pressing Option + B.
🔸 Use a program like AutoHotkey to automatically type the symbols you need when you type certain shortcuts: https://www.autohotkey.com/
See the next page for more alternatives.
god it isnt workng for me wtf
have you downloaded the international keyboard?
yeah you have to download it via windows key iard settings. then switch your language to us international

Hello, can someone send me links to German - English storybooks or novels for A2 learners
Hey everyone
What can I listen to as a B2 learner
I need heavy emphasis on vocabulary
But i also get frustrated with podcasts when there’s too much shit i dont understand
Id love to learn more and more on the go
During walks and stuff
Any ideas?
@tropic vector watch movies/series in Deustch. They use a lot of local vocab that could be helpful.
Anything that’s purely audio?
@tropic vector https://open.spotify.com/show/2rnCPyV8A9J80QtmGj2pAx?si=2w-ZaKV_SmWym3zNXZBpVA
Check this out
@tropic vector there is a youtube kanal named "Easy German" besides their videos they also make postcasts etc.
resource: Download an app called Flipboard (pretty famous with 500M downloads but only found out about them today) and choose the region as switzerland in the app. and now the app is in German
a nice app to read stuff in German on your phone when news gets too boring/overwhelming
its entertaining articles.
if any germans use any other apps such as this please post them.

I found a very useful script for US-keyboard users
For Autohotkey users

CapsLock & a::
GetKeyState, state, Shift

but ur capslock original function will not work.
but you can go to system tray and right click to disable the code
just right click

but your shift function will remain
so you can still
Shift + any character = capital
ADSADJOCMOWQJOE, shift + capslock + A/O/U = capital umlait
That is not a very good hotkey setup. If you look in the pinned messages in this channel, I pinned a file that has a better autohotkey setup.
oh
I recommend to use that one instead.
theres an even better one?
okay ill check it out now

Working on one about noun gender next...
Here it is! "How to Remember German Noun Gender - Part 1: Masculine (der)"
A neat trick to help you remember genders for German nouns. In this video, we cover the forms and groups for masculine nouns ("der").
Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows some goos German Youtubers that do their videos in German but have English subtitles. I'm hoping for more crafty (Sewing, knitting etc) but anyone will do.
Thanks!
any place to practice position of the verb in yes and no question and Position of the verb in information questions things like this
@coarse fiber I would discourage English subtitles, because then you're in a risk of just reading that
Sewing terms aren't insanely hard, so I think even autogenerated subtitles in German could be enough to get a grasp
At the beginning it will be more work and more digging through the vocabularies, but it won't last that long :) (granted, beginning will be hard especially if you're complete beginner in those crafts as well)
Schnabelina has famous bags
And there's also Das Haus mit dem Rosen Sofa, which actually looks active
Others I haven't watched at all, but if you do search for schnabelina you'll get other people who did those bags :)
If this helps in any way :)
What do you mean?
I think that would just end up confusing you more
I can't see what possible benefit that could have.
If you mean you're watching stuff in German, for the purpose of learning German, you should use German subtitles or no subtitles.
You can't translate languages word-for-word, so it wouldn't work.
But then why not just make it normal English (or whatever language you already speak) subtitles, if you just want to understand people?
By just using word-for-word translated subtitles, you lose the benefits of both understanding and of learning. You get nothing.
If you want to analyze that kind of stuff, it's much better to do it with text.
You can get a story which has dual language and compare texts.
the key to understanding speech - especially in the early stages - is to not understand what every word is and what every word means - but to understand the gist of what's being communicated. If you spend too much time focusing on individual words you lose focus of the scope of the sentence and what's being said
You should pretty much never do something word for word when it comes to learning languages.
I would recommend instead to start by learning the basics of how German sentences are constructed. Once you do that, you can learn to parse the different parts of sentences, and then, after that, learn to understand how different ideas can be conveyed between the two languages.
If you have no clue what sentence means, I'd just type it whole into deepl.com and check that
If you understand the most but not some words, then dictionary makes sense to use
I definitely encourage using the dictionary constantly.
My point is that you can't just go through each word one by one and hope you'll understand what's going on. You need to learn the words and the structure.
So it's important to also learn about the structure, because it creates the whole context by which you understand the words.
I agree with you, base!
My recommendation for deepl.com is for situations when you want to just understand something and move on, not focusing on learning language but extract information
Word by word translation could be very bad especially if you're trying to understand official stuff for example :)
I mean, you will passively learn language as well, but it's not primary use for that
I was suggesting from the context of understanding what's going on in video
@gilded pelican yes, it does! Danke!
Hello guys. Does someone here know where can i download this book's pdf for free. Or maybe someone here have it?
@gleaming oar Sharing copyrighted material illegally is not allowed here.
Ohh my bad sorry idk that 😅
It's against Discord ToS so Discord can delete your account for stuff like that.

Any resources for A0 / A1

ty I appreciate the help
Thanks!
Hello, I just started A2
That doesn't mean much, I realise 😅
What are the best resources I can use at this point?
I already use duolingo, nezwerk textbook, nick's web etc
Wow me too, i just started a2 yesterday.
There's some good courses on here https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/level-a2/s-13228
Mit dem Einstufungstest die richtige Niveaustufe finden, mit dem Kursfinder den passenden Deutschkurs ermitteln.
use anki
It depends on what you're trying to learn.
With vocab it's like this: you should learn the words and their meaning properly, but you can use the flashcards to reinforce that knowledge.
Vocab requires a lot of straight up memorization.
But you just have to make sure that you understand what you're memorizing and don't make silly assumptions.
For vocab, I really recommend the pre-made anki decks for A1-B1. There's a separate deck for each level and using Anki substantially helps you keep track of everything, memorize with the pace you'd like, revise efficiently and is overall a great go-to. Would really recommend to anyone memorizing vocabulary
Making your own Anki deck is even better.
Yes, I've been trying to make my own anki cards
A question about that: Should I put everything in the flashcard - gender, participle forms, examples etc? I don't want it to be too overwhelming but I also want to learn efficiently. Thank you for the answers :)
Verbs should generally have this info:
essen
isst / aß / hat gegessen
For nouns you need singular and plural form, and you should include the article (e.g. die Katze, Katzen). It's a good idea, but not essential, to add the genitive form for masculine and neuter nouns too. And I recommend to add something if they are weak nouns also.
hi! does anyone have any good resources for reflexive verbs???
Thanks!
does anyone have a link to the premade A1-B2 anki decks?
you can find a bunch of different ones here https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/german @night glade
but it's strongly recommended to make your own decks. E.g. either from the goethe word lists, vocab lists in any textbooks your using, and of any new words you find out in the real world as:
- not only do you learn more from making the decks yourself - having to research and understand the word
- a lot of the decks are insufficient/ineffective in the way they're put together. E.g. lack examples to provide context on how the words are actually used, or have mistakes.
if you take a look at >faq anki there are some tips on what things should go on flashcards.
This tip from another message is also a good one to follow:
when using flashcards, instead of seeing a german word and having to remember what the english word is, give yourself an english word to try and remember what the german word is.
or alternatively - again putting things into context - make up close phrases. E.g. Ich kaufe Lebensmittel im [blank] ein. and put those on your flashcards. (the reverse side of that example flash card would have 'Ich kaufe Lebensmittel im Markt ein. der Markt, die Märkte - market')
Basically flashcards are most effective not when they teach you to recognise something. E.g. see 'Baum' and know it means 'tree', put to be able to synthesise and reproduce knowledge. E.g. Look at a picture of a tree and be able to know that's 'der Baum' and also know that although 'die Struktur' can translate to 'tree' the tree die Struktur refers to is not the plant kind of tree.
thank you so much for your reply!

Hi DfE ❤️ ❤️
Hallo, can anyone tell me what is the gender of the German word (Dose)
You don't need to use a German language dictionary to find gender.
Basically any dictionary will tell you the gender.
Katja Sensei, thank you for all your work, may your pizza always be nice, hot and just the way you like it

You don't need to use a German language dictionary to find gender.
@misty valve it get confusing sometimes with words similar to English ones but you're right
@hybrid seal thanks, that is a very generous blessing

Does anyone have a good resource for learning dative and genitive case? Thank you
Check out >faq genitive and >faq dative in #botchannel as a starting point.
I recommend to learn them one at a time though, because it can be a lot to learn at once.
Thank you! I got overwhelmed learning dative and genitive case in the past
It’s probably because I was in school and not learning at my own pace
Makes sense.
I liked Erebos or generally all the books from Ursula Poznanski are certainly worth a read, if you like youth, crime, adventure novels and the like.

I would be interested in that

Sweet cheat sheet, thanks!
Thank you for the kind words. I'll try sometime 🙂
@safe cloak I use deepl.com
Put german text, and check how the English translation sounds
Then I put that translation (en) and see how deepl would translate it to German
Then I tweak and repeat, on any side as long as I'm not happy
Process is good enough that I've managed to do official stuff with it without being misunderstood :)

Hallo, can anybody recommend me a good app for learning? Or are online materials better?
most things are better than an app unless your goal is to cram vocabulary flashcards
I see, i learned a bit from duolingo but it isn't really providing what i need
Babbels is pretty decent, you have to pay for it tho
Otherwise, apps i can recommend are:
DW learn german
Tobo German
Deutsch Wörterbuch (I use this to look up words i don't know, popular words also have translations in other languages)
But like crapfork said, they are best for learning words
@pulsar urchin

what are some good resources for vocab learning?
faq anki
Anki is a free and very versatile flashcard program that is often used for learning new vocabulary. You can import spreadsheets to quickly create your own flashcards, and you can add your own images and audio for highly custom flashcard decks. You can also access and use a wide range of community created and shared flashcard decks all for free*.
Note: Anki uses a method of learning called spaced repetition. Flashcards and spaced repetition are one of many techniques used for language learning. However, we all learn differently and while these methods work for many people, they may not necessarily work for you. Give it a try, but don’t be disheartened if these methods aren’t right for you. Even if flashcards and spaced repetition work for you, don’t forget to incorporate other forms of practice. E.g. try using your new vocabulary to write your own practice sentences.
It is available here on PC, Mac, Linux, iPhone, and Android. You can also find the browser AnkiWeb version here.
Manually adding basic cards is quite simple, but making custom templates is a bit more complex. Basementality has put together this handy guide for making custom card types and decks. You can also find Anki’s documentation / instruction guide here.
*The iPhone app AnkiMobile costs $24.99 USD on the iTunes store. The Android app and all other platforms are completely free. The mobile browser version of AnkiWeb is still available for free on iPhones.
See the next page for some helpful tips on creating your flashcards.

I don't know a website for that specifically but one option you could use is a bilingual book.

@carmine canopy Is the pink word meant to be feminine?
As in die neue Beruf ? Yes
Der Beruf
Oh
And you got the declension wrong for the ein-word. For feminine words it will be: eine neue
I would recommend to change the purple text as it's very hard to see.
I took The info on several web sites, i should have checked
Should I delete them ? So people won't make mistakes
I'll rework them
Hmm, maybe post them in #beginner-german or something instead so people can still point out mistakes. Then post them in #resources again once you're sure they're all correct.
Nice, thanks y'all!
Getting to work then ^^
@vague plaza what was the issue with the demonstrative pronouns ? 🧐
deren and derer are used for both feminine and plural as genitive demonstrative pronouns
though the rules on when to use which are a little, er, complex
Mm.. I'll dig into it ! Thanks
for all intents and purposes however derer is a bit altmodisch
this is a bit of a tl;dr tho
Nice

Hey all! I'm somewhere between B1 and the beginning of B2. I've been looking for a decent nice and thrilling book to read in German, and I have found one, called Bitte nicht öffnen 3: Durstig!

Can someone please help me with some resources to target A2 level Goethe exam? Especially I’m trying to figure out the kind of questions I could expect, the syllabus(if there is such a thing) etc etc. I have been learning on Duolingo (finished half of the German tree over there) and want to target A2 directly. Any thoughts are highly appreciated
Goethe has a word list you can check it out
@carmine canopy based on the level of the exam?
hallo wissen sie, wo kann ich filmen mit deutsche audio und untertittel ansehen, außerdem zdf oder ard1 ?
Die Listen sind nur bis B1 verfügbar. Ab B2 gibt es keine.
Was für Filme meinst du? Dokumentarfilme oder gibt es etwas Spezifisches?
Einige stehen auf Onleihe, eine virtuelle Bibliothek des Goethe-Instituts. Aber dafür musst du dich anmelden.
@carmine canopy Sorry but posting / requesting pirated material is against Discord ToS.
oh
Maybe try https://github.com/mikesteele/dual-captions/. It allows you to stream youtube, netflix, and others with both english and german subs (when available).
If you are studying A1, my personal recommendation would be Netzwerk A1. That's mostly what Goethe uses along with Kopiervorlagen from other books etc.

Is duolingo a good place to learn German?
faq duo
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.
If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .
@feral coyote
Ja , es ist gut, aber nicht genug
Has anyone here used german grammar drills?
Drills?
a book by Ed Swick
Oh Nope sorry
I thought there was a lot of drama recently in duolingo's community. Something made it worse or paywalled.
hm i know the server provides a doc with grammar resources, its helpful but idk where to start. best grammar website in ur opinion?
I think there's no one "best" grammar site. Usually when I want a site for grammar, I just google the topic and look through the main results to see which result has the best info.
You can use the bot command >faq beginner in #botchannel to see a list of grammar topics, if you're not sure what to search next.
@kindred quest
Thank you! 😄
they added a hearts system to the app version, where after you make 5 mistakes you have to use the practice feature or pay gems to regain them. People were frustrated because the practice feature kept showing them easy questions, and they felt afraid to make mistakes and weren't learning as well anymore. Didn't affect me because they don't have it on the website version.
So I went ahead and built this, for my own needs 😂 if anyone has any feedback, or notices any mistakes or bugs, or has any ideas on how it could be made better, please please please let me know!

Hello, do you guys have any recommendation for an Anki deck ? For German vocabulary of course
thanks!
what book would you guys suggest for A1/BEGINNER
İğnelenmiş mesajlar kısmında baya kaynak olan bir pdf(?) dosyası var
Onu indir içinde A ve B seviye kitapları vardı adını unuttum @strong blaze
Schenke yazanlar
Just do dw.de courses? I assume this is for self-study.
Yes but DW courses itself enough for preparation?
For what?
My goal is to get C1 certificate from telc at the end.
Therefore I want to learn every level properly
I think it’s doable
Just my suggestion. Do dw.de courses for now.
See how you progress in a month or so.
It's better to start now rather than finding the absolute best proper way.
What about vocabulary
Courses are enough for that too?
They teach you the vocabs obviously.
The biggest problem if anything is pronunciation.
I started watching youtube videos few days ago
Without a teacher to correct you, it's kinda challenging.
But Idk if thats enough
Again, just my opinion A1-A2 means nothing.
They are just the basics.
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is they are enough for now.
Check the pin.
Yeah
If you want a real tutor you can use iwdl.de @strong blaze it's completely free. You can use flashcards to practice vocab using something like Anki, memrise, or quizlet. Plus, you can start reading books and watching tv in german to absorb some more nuanced facets of the language. A1-A2 is very different than the rest of the german learning experience imo. A more structured course becomes less useful once you learn the most common words and all the different grammar rules imo.
Interesting, I've heard about it. But didn't know it offers some tutorial support for free.
are there any sites which gives u quiz/worksheets to do but also gives the answers to them to cross check? atm i dont have any practice material
Yeah, there are a few.
I like this one: http://www.nthuleen.com/teach/grammar.html
Grammar worksheets for teaching German - Arbeitsblätter zum Thema Grammatik für den Deutschunterricht.
But if you look in the resource list (or even just google it) you can find more.
I bought the schenken beginner book, but Im gonna check this website also.
Never heard of that book.
My recommended https://deutschlernerblog.de/ exercises are fit to your learning level and it's a good reference for grammar
My teacher recommended
thanks

@heady yew Go to #botchannel and type >faq beginner for our beginner tips.
Ohk
Taking a class would be the least painful way to do it imo.
Depends a lot on the class and how much it costs.
If paying for the class means you have to give up on something else, that can be quite painful.

does anyone know a good way for google images or bing to NOT include stuff about celebrities when looking up common words?
for example i looked up "sauber" to see clean stuff and instead there's only pictures about some formula 1 stuff
you can always use the '-' symbol to exclude things from your search. In this case, for example, Formula 1 or the guy's last name or something
Hello guys,
https://learngerman.dw.com/de/das-deutschlandlabor/c-53074503
I started learning German with this at the university and I now use them with students. These are "Folgen" about 20 different topics. The difficult increases with each episode. If you study it with the website, it's all interactive. However, for people like me, I've got everything downloaded onto my drive so feel free to do the same.
Each Folge comes with exercises, a vocabulary list, corrections. Everything you need to learn on your own. Here are the topics in order: Schule, Mode, Fussball, Literatur, Wandern, Wohnen, Organisation, Musik, Auto, Migration, Müll, Geld, Urlaub, Kuscheltiere, Bio, Mentalitât, Kälte, Kunst, Wurst and of course, Bier.
Have fun 🙂
I want DVD of the following book Studio d a1
How do you download it onto the drive?
I've downloaded the videos from the website, there were links somewhere. Then, I uploaded onto my personal Microsoft Drive account 🙂
Thank you @carmine canopy
You're welcome. Hope it helps
I'm new to German so I hope so
It did help me pretty well. You gave to be intelligent about it aha
In what way??? 😂
Well, don't cram it ahahah, go with the flow, have fun and study in a smart way aha
hello, i'm making a sort of app to speed up the process of looking for new vocab
as it stands, i'm the only user to the interface is very ugly and some tech knowledge is required to make the best use of it.
i'm deciding whether or not to spend time making it easier to use? would you get much use out of something like this?
Pretty cool, can it make sentence cards automatically?
not yet
but soon, right now i'm working on making it work with cloud services such as azure, so that it can fill in the gaps where there is no easily accessible ressource on the internet
It sounds like a great idea for which languages?
so far i just tried with german
it works pretty well for other languages as well, tried with arabic, chinese, russian

Its shite for Irish but yknow
Irish is very different in terms of... the amount of speakers as German so I wouldnt be surprised if it was different

So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.

Often enough for us to have an faq about it :P
@dawn ocean
Sorry mate lol
It's no worries. I didn't want to tell you off. I just wanted to give you an answer to your question
Thanks man, appreciate it alot 🙂

Is there a purchasable german teaching course that can be downloaded?
i don't feel like paying yearly. tried that with busuu and it just felt like a scam.
I don’t know, I use the Rosetta Stone, which I have a lifetime account on.
how's that working for you?
I like it, but the exercises can be repetitive. I like it because it teaches you without English, which I think imprints the words and their meaning in my mind more and gets around a few issues I have normally learning languages. But it can mean the grammar is a little more complicated and requires a reasonable amount of thinking to unravel sometimes.

Hi all, I posted a long-ish message to Reddit -- https://www.reddit.com/r/German/comments/ko2mmy/requesting_proofreading_and_input_for_an_audio/? -- requesting assistance for making an Anki deck for adjective declensions. If y'all have a moment, please check it out, and take a peek at the Google doc linked therein. Cheers and regards! jz

I tried them for a little while, didn't want to do the peer review work, but I wonder, which part looks scammy to you?
Granted, I did it more than 2 years ago, but it looked okish back then...
it might be a bit obscure question but is there any good material in Hungarian? from beginner to advanced.
for German, not for Hungarian of course 😄

Hi! For those who love German and Netflix, I can't help but post this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrwycJ08PSA&ab_channel=ONEMedia
It's the trailer of "Dark" that is available on Netflix. Set the audio to be in VO (German) and you will travel to another worls. It's about time being more than linear. Everything's connected. You should set the subtitles to German, not to English, unless you can focus on the audio still.
Have fun, it's worth it! I watched it three times! lol
Hallo!

Looking for recommendations on beginner grammar resources, free or paid. Including exercises. I have two grammar books now, Complete German Grammar and Living German: a grammar based course. But if there’s better stuff out there or better ways to learn, lemme know 😄 A low pressure course would be cool, even if it’s paid, just something to motivate me to keep going
Also recommendations for German YouTube channels for documentaries, or anything related to science, gaming, media, tech?
Oh cool sorry I didn’t see that! Thank you
No problem. Feel free to ask here again if it doesn't solve your questions though. 😄
In 10.4, couldn't be the Brüder Grimm added?
might not be poetry though
@carmine canopy It's in 10.2.
Thx
hi guys, any resources for learning the irregular verbs?
here are two tables you could use:
https://resources.german.lsa.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/irreg_verbs_DNutting.pdf (i really like umich's stuff)
https://jakubmarian.com/list-of-irregular-strong-german-verbs/
ime the best approach is just to drill them (personally i made and learned a set of flashcards like
bleiben -> bleiben, bleibt, blieb, ist geblieben, and so on)
thank you! yeah I just need to sit down and learn them once and forever, been postponing it way too long
yeah, it's just a thing you have to do. i found learning eg. 5 a day with flashcards was manageable and got it out of the way quickly.
exactly, no way around it 😄 well, let's get it started... 💪 I think they were something like 180 so if I had spent the time thinking about learning them actually studying my mind would've been already free from them till now. Great, gonna try do to the same,
Just got this app called Der Die Das that gameifies the articles and I’m really enjoying it so far. It explains in detail the rules for them and I believe there’s 2,000 words in it so far. It’s really simple but for me it was worth spending 2.99 to remove the ads 😛 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/der-die-das-german-grammar/id1456718449
@carmine canopy hi, thanks for sharing! Just so you're aware, we have a curated resource list (in the channel topic), and prefixing your suggestion with >resource will make the bot register it as a submission, making sure that we don't overlook it if the channel moves a bit faster than usual.
Hi. Can you suggest me any good books for German grammatic?
what kind are you looking for? explanations or exercises?
Hammer's German Grammar and Usage is very good for reference.
for exercises, Schubert Verlag do grammar textbooks that explain concepts and give you exercises - A-Grammatik, B-Grammatik, C-grammatik depending on your level
Hello, thanks for answering.
Yes, i wanted for reference.
Hammer's is what we used when i was in an english-language class, and iirc it does have a companion exercise book too
All right.
Thank you. I'll download the book, if I'll find it.
@carmine canopy check the channel topic too.
@sleek holly Sorry, I couldn't find the channel-topic. What is the name of the channel, again?
I mean the topic of this channel, the text that is displayed at the top of your screen. There you can see a link to our resource list, which among other things includes books.
Yes, I've found it. Thank you.
Where can I learn old english, I mean anglo-saxon english but I just want to know basic stuff
Leute. I was thinking I would like to join some kind of forum/discord server/Facebook group? or whatever kind of online community in which all interactions are in German. Is there a list of sites that apply? I think it would be a valuable learning tool.
@wise viper you can check reddit, r/de is only German and they have a discord server
https://discord.gg/eduMNwt
hey, thanks

Any good explanations or rundowns of German case? Having trouble differentiating between them.
Here is the basic breakdown:
Nominative = Subject
Accusative / Dative = Object
Genitive = Possessive
So usually the part people have trouble differentiating between is accusative and dative. That may narrow it down for you a bit in terms of understanding them.
Hi all, I have a question, is there any recommendation for a book/website/app that teaches grammar, asks you for exercises and that includes audio/listening exercises? Specially for a beginner self-learner. I've been checking out the Schritte book/audio that a friend lent me, and works but there are multiple exercises to do in pairs (with other persons) but since I'm by myself, it pretty much doesn't work out that well for me 😅 thanks in advance!
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the courses here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469/
Not sure if it's what you're looking for.
Add in some extra worksheets from here: http://www.nthuleen.com/teach/grammar.html
Grammar worksheets for teaching German - Arbeitsblätter zum Thema Grammatik für den Deutschunterricht.
Yes! I remember doing the Nicos Weg a while ago, I'll try it out with the worksheets which look great, thank you!
You can practice the Imperative with this worksheet. 🙂

Thoughts on Pimsleur? I’m debating doing that for $20/month because a German class at my university will cost me $1200
Hallo leute! Does anyone have the audiobooks of 'Dino lernt Deutsch'?
The notes I took during Language Transfer on SoundCloud
are there any word lists for linguistics and language terms?
@odd lion wie hast du gefunden LT? I tried it and got through the first 10 lessons or so but it just seemed like it didn’t do much for me.
