faq how long to learn
According to the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), a person is estimated to require 750-900 hours of guided learning to reach B2 in German. However, study habits and other factors can drastically affect this estimation. These factors include your native language, previous language learning experience, the methods you use, your discipline and motivation, consistency, grammar, exposure and immersion, and training each ability equally. You can find an overview of these factors on page 3 of >faq best way to learn.
The term "guided learning hours" refers to time spent learning with a more advanced language partner (such as a tutor), while making use of language materials (tools, texts and other resources). Guided learning hours, while very helpful, are not necessarily required to learn German. Many people learn German by self-studying, however, self-study hours are too variable to measure, and are consequently excluded from this definition and estimate.
faq best way to learn
There isn’t only one “best” way to learn German, especially since different methods work better for different people. However, this FAQ will outline the main aspects of learning efficiently, which you can cater to your needs.
If you’re a beginner, type >faq beginner in #botchannel to see our beginner guide.
There are many combinations of activities you can use to study and practice a language. How do you know which combinations are suitable? The key is to make sure you cover each of the main skills with at least one activity. Some activities only train one skills, while some train multiple – either is fine, as long as all the 6 skills are covered somewhere in your studies.
• Reading
• Writing
• Listening
• Speaking
• Grammar
• Vocabulary
It doesn’t really matter which resources you use, as long as you can follow along, and the information is correct and reliable. If you have any doubts about whether a resource is correct, feel free to ask. You do not need to find just one resource and stick to it – in fact, to learn best, it’s recommended that you use a large variety of resources and switch between them when needed.

ive been learning german for 15 months... and i mainly used the DeepL chrome extension to quickly translate text on any web page i may be... but recently i needed to translate things that are not on the web... Turns out their Windows App allows you to instantly translate text from any source be it on web or not (even from images (screenshots)) simply with hotkeys (granted the app does stay in the background and consume 150 mb of ram)
but this is super cool and super useful and i can't recommend it enough

Where can you check your German proficiency level?
faq cefr
If you see something like A1, B2 or C1, these represent the proficiency of a speaker in a language they're not native in, and are called CEFR levels. They are valid for any language, not only German!
Roughly speaking, A levels are beginners and C levels are experts. Remember that CEFR level are self-assessed and indicative!

In German, I'd think of the general following terms:
Teil ("part"), which refers to a grouping more coarse than chapters. For multi-volume series, a part can have multiple volumes.
Band ("volume"), which refers to a single volume.
Buch ("book"), usually used with legal, religious and generally ancient texts, refers to a self-contained single-author part. If it is shorter or longer than a "Teil" depends on context and authors preference.
Kapitel ("chapter"), with Unterkapitel ("subchapter"). Parts sometimes (but rarely) are called "Oberkapitel" ("super-chapters").
Abschnitt ("section") with "Unterabschnitt" ("subsection"), which makes a self-contained statement of piece of content.
Legal texts Paragraph(en) ("paragraph(s)") are somewhere on the level of a chapter or section.
Absatz ("paragraph"), which is mostly easily identified with the formatting.
Satz ("sentence"), this is mostly used in legal texts as far as I can tell.
Generally speaking, I'd say the usage ChatGPT details should work for most books.

Hallo. Ich suche Bücher für lesen. Kann jemand eine Ressource geben mit adaptierten Büchern.
Asking again since it's been a while. Does anyone know of anything like Memento so I can easily sentence mine with german subtitles from video? The pic shows how it works, you hover over a word, get an english equivalent and are able to easily add it to anki with a picture, sound bite and the subtitle.
Interesting...do share if you happen to find one outside the server. If there isn't one, I would like to work on a project like this, so maybe pitching it to the guys in the coding channel might help and they could develop a similar program for German
It's FOSS if you're interested. https://github.com/ripose-jp/Memento
The only thing I've found similar is Subs2SRS, but memento was built to replace that as Subs2SRS is rather cumbersome to use.

how should i start learning german
Suggest me some Deutche Films
Try using course books as your guide, start with A1 books.
Should the book be fully German or explain German in a language I speak
If you have a basic German background, you can do use a monolingual book. But if none at all, I suggest you find something in your language first just to have a basic understanding of the language. Try Routledge Basic German, then you should be able to proceed with A1 books that has no translations. Pronunciation might be a bit harder on your own based from experience- a bit more of hearing audio and repeating what has been said- I think there are also some books or at least Youtube videos that have these content. What I suggest is that at the beginning, try to get used to the sound and accent so you can distinguish words easily.
Do you think an all German book is better for learning?
It depends on what you want to do. If you want to pass a specific certification level, an all German Book aligned with the CEFR levels will not only give you an idea of the topics and vocabulary needed to pass the exam, it would also give you some phrases you can use to start making sentences. However, if you want to just learn German to understand and speak fluently - any content is appropriate. You can use the coursebook contents as a guide for advancement, to track grammar difficulty of what should be learned. The A/B/C Grammatik books are good for that.
Thank you

Ich bin auf der Suche nach deutschsprachigen Youtube Kanalen die gut fuer Immersion sind. Ich bin nur auf TV-Kanaele gestossen, wo die Sprache unnatürlich ist (the language being spoken is canned and stiff).
I am looking to borrow some notes from someone from here or any website that will help me with a quick revision. I have a layered idea about grammar and rules but if I don't revise them often, I keep forgetting. Can someone help with the notes?
I did check that draft but I cannot find anything mentioned as a resource for notes. They only have learning sources and nothing like drafted notes
does anyone have any recommendations on studying for studienkolleg stuff (math, physics, chemistry) like some sort of lectures or some resources?
There is the Frequency book from Routledge but I think it’s B1-C1 level
Not flashcards but these books have A-Level vocabs separated by themes: Deutsch in Themenkreisen and Langenscheidt Grundwortschatz Deutsch
Hey all, are the Aspekte Neu C1 themes at least still relevant or should I opt for a newer book? Anyone can recommend other books? Thank you.

Hello does anyone watch german gameplay videos? I learned english by watching gameplay and tiktok videos on youtube. Is there a same way i can perform the same route the way i learned english?
it should be possible for any language
that's also the same way I learned English
might be the best way to learn any languge
im thinking watching movies could help too.Can anyone recommend some german movies or series? so i can watch them with them speaking german
is the DW Learn German app actually good for A1? (ok, thanks :) )
i'm asking because one of the exercises involved mimicking what you can hear, but you're the one who has to check if you did well enough (which is... odd, to say the least)

I Found this video and I think it’s really good for explaining verb endings.
Best for A1 learners ^_^
This video is a summary of the present tense conjugation of regular verbs in German. It covers the concept of regular verb endings, the necessary steps to master regular verbs (figuring out the stem and adding the endings), the endings themselves (in the context of two extremely common verbs), examples sentences for each of the six persons and a...

Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!

I may try uploading 3 times a week but I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort when I have 66-180 views in 24hrs per subbed trailer upload
Then again. It’s only been 2 trailers..
I will also reshare them as stories so u can be reminded to learn them on a intermittent interval. Not sure if it would help
thanks but #resources message and i also find it kind of weak.... also i feel like im programming half or the time or looking up stuff that doesn't come out of the box with obsidian instead of writing my notes....

Partly because of the shit I said, that's going to impact their quality really badly.
well I bought a year's worth of subscription already :/
You could look into it, they (hopefully) have a way to cancel and get a refund for the unused months
Hmm i'll have to see. If i do manage to refund it what do you recommand ( as a basically complete beginner)
Unfortunately I'm also looking for a replacement ¯_(ツ)_/¯
We can hope duolingo reverses course, but it might already be too late and they've already reached the trust thermocline
ah that sucks. Well I'm sure they are gonna be many new courses that would want to monopolize on this opportunity.
Lmk if you find anything cool.
Obsidian is much better tan OneNote, you don't have to programm anything. If you're new at it, just star creating a note, and then another one. Then you can star making connections between them just with wikilinks "[[ ]]". You don't need any special syntax to use Obsidian.
Besides, there are amazing and simple tutorials in YouTube to star using Obsidian that not require any preview kwnoledge about special syntax or programming
Windows has live captions
its good for videos that don't have subtitles

That's some pretty good content they have there! I would have needed that before coming to Germany
is chatgpt good for translating german to another language
It may not be reliable since it's not a translator but rather a text generator.
ChatGPT basically just creates a text that sounds good. So it could translate things incorrectly.
Since there's nothing in the code for it to be able to check its own translations.
However, DeepL is a good translator.
I also really like it, only recently discovered their channel! Wish they had more! I'm following now, so I will be posting here again when there's more content out!
It looks like they started only a few month ago. But the content is already really good if you don't want to just learn the language but also the culture

faq umlauts
Umlauts - ä, ö, ü
Along with the 26 letters of its alphabet, German also possesses the umlaut, a diacritic in the form of two dots placed over the letters a, o, u to form ä, ö, and ü. Umlautmeans something akin to altered soundand this is reflected in the fact that the pronunciation of the umlauted vowels are quite different from the non-umlauted vowels.
🗨️ How do I type ä, ö, ü?
See >faq keyboard on how to type umlauts.
If you cannot type the umlauts, you can add an e to the non-diacritic vowel to represent an umlaut. For example, you can represent öffnenas oeffnen.
Umlauts can never be replaced with their non-diacritic versions. In other words, you cannot replace ö with o when spelling words like öffnen. Some words only differ by the vowel sound, for example schwul(gay) and schwül(humid, sultry).
🗨️ How do I pronunce ä, ö, ü?
See the next few pages for more info on pronunciation.
faq keyboard
Being able to type German letters is quite important!
- Schon = already. Schön = beautiful.
- Mutter = mother. Mütter = mothers.
How to? There are several options.
🔸 Use a program like AutoHotkey. Download the program from https://www.autohotkey.com/ and read the pinned message in #resources for instructions on how to set it up. It can be used with any keyboard layout and the hotkeys can be customised.
🔸 US International layout: this is basically just a US keyboard layout with extra characters, so if you're using a US-style keyboard or something similar, the transition is very easy! Everything stays as you know it, except that some of the symbol keys can be used to create the special characters. For example " + a = ä. You can also do RightAlt + s = ß.
To use US International on Windows, look for the Region & Language options and switch your selected keyboard layout to US International.
🔸 If you are on Mac, there are two simple possibilities:
- The accent menu - Pressing and holding a letter key will display multiple variants of the letter, including umlauts, which can then be selected using the number keys.
- Dead keys - Pressing
Option + u, then pressinga,u, oro, respectively, will display the umlaut variant of that letter. You can also pressOption + sto enterß.
See this support article for more information:

See the next page for more alternatives.

faq dictionary
The best way to understand the meaning of a word is to use a dictionary. Monolingual dictionaries such as dwds.de, de.wiktionary.org and duden.de will often provide the most accurate definitions and examples for a word. If you are not yet comfortable with using a monolingual dictionary, bilingual dictionaries are also an option (dict.cc, dict.leo.org, pons.com).
The key here is to empower yourself to find the answer on your own. Using the many examples provided in dictionaries like DWDS, Wiki and Duden can help you confidently understand the word, and how to use it. If you still have trouble; don't worry! You can use #questions, #questions-2 or the #942470380692590632 to ask someone for further clarification.

I included screenshots and demo videos to give you a clear picture of how it all looks and works: https://www.reddit.com/r/lumetrium_definer/comments/1ahqkky/langenscheidt_germanenglish_dictionary_as_custom
I appreciate it. I found some helpful materials on his channel as well
Hi guys. I am looking for someone to practice speaking A1 german with. Can someone help me
hey, i am looking to read some books that are easy to comprehend (B1 level) could be kids’ books
Language Reactor: your language learning toolbox. Discover, understand, and learn from native materials, including Netflix and YouTube. (Formerly called 'Language Learning with Netflix'.)
i need a recource for a2 emails
I know there is an official A1 German Anki deck, but is there any other decks you would recommend for learning faster?
Making your own deck is generally good. You don't have to make the cards yourself necessarily. You can download other decks and then take cards from those and add to a new deck.
danke.
Hey does anyone have good resources for schreiben and sprechen (B2-C1) preferably some ubungsbucher or something to that extent?
Langenscheidt German dictionary. Get the one that says "German" on it not "Englisch" as the former one is better for learning german. The other is for germans learning English.
has anyone used the Basic German Grammar Workbook recommended in the resources link here and, more importantly, does anyone have a recommended vocabulary book that pairs well with it?
Yeah! I started with it, even before the formal Goethe classes. There’s also the Intermediate version of that book for A2-B1 level. Langedscheidt (sorry not sure with the spelling) has a good beginner vocab book for A-level with english and audio.
what did you do for vocabulary learning purposes ?
Try Langenscheidt Grundwortschatz Deutsch - Basic Vocabulary German, also pair your study with any A1 coursebook. I used Spektrum Deutsch A1+. Schritte is more suited for classroom use
ok ! thank you for the advice :)
Let me know if you found one, I am also interested. I have Aspekte Neu and Spektrum Deutsch for B2 level, then waiting for Kompass DaF and Erkundungen for C1. I’ve also used Hueber üben books but they are mostly for lesen and hören. I think sprechen works best with a speaking partner which I don’t have LOL

faq dict

Hello.
I would like to know if anyone here has the audios for the "Moment Mal!" books 1, 2 and 3 of the Langenscheidt editorial.
I have the 3 Lehrbuch, the 3 Arbeitsbuch and the 3 Testheft.
The only thing I don't have are the audios.
Would like to know if somebody has them and would like to help me, bitte.

explain Sehen
In German, there are a few different verbs describing the act of seeing. The most important ones are sehen, schauen, zuschauen, anschauen, zusehen and ansehen.
🔸 sehen (sieht, sah, hat gesehen) is the closest translation to “see”. It indicates an ability to see something.
(1) Ich sehe dich. (I can see you.)
(2) Siehst du das Auto? (Can you see the car?)
🔸 schauen (schaut, schaute, hat geschaut) is similar to English “look”. It indicates that you are actively trying to see something or looking in a particular direction. You usually use it together with some prepositional phrase that indicates the target. Schauen does not take a direct object! The verb gucken means the same as schauen, which one is used is mostly regional.
(3) Ich schaue aus dem Fenster. (I am looking out of the window.)
(4) Sie schaute unter den Tisch. (She looked under the table.)
‼ There are a lot of idioms with schauen, such as nach jmdm. schauen “to look after someone” and auf etw. schauen “to guard sth.”
🔸 anschauen means “to look at sth”. You use it when indicating that you are looking at an object. zuschauen on the other hand indicates you’re looking at an action.
‼ anschauen requires an accusative object, but zuschauen requires dative.
(5) Ich schaue die Landschaft an. (I am looking at the landscape.)
(6) Ich schaue den Kindern zu. (I am watching the children (doing sth).)
🔸 ansehen and zusehen mean the same thing as anschauen and zuschauen respectively.
(7) Sie sehen uns an. (They are looking at us.)

Are books a good way to learn? I found a book called "Hunde von Riga" for really cheap but I'm not sure if reading is a helpful way to learn or if the speed translating unknown things makes it so slow it's unhelpful. I guess this would depend on your level but at which level would it be worth it?

Reading is really good to train your passive vocabulary (understanding things) you can (and should) start reading on day one but it's better to start with short texts to not make it too hard and discouraging
Hmm okay perhaps ill look around for some short stories...
You can also try with that book but 352 pages will probably be too long and leave you frustrated for a first read.

faq anki
Anki is a free and very versatile flashcard program that is often used for learning new vocabulary. You can import spreadsheets to quickly create your own flashcards, and you can add your own images and audio for highly custom flashcard decks. You can also access and use a wide range of community created and shared flashcard decks all for free*.
Note: Anki uses a method of learning called spaced repetition. Flashcards and spaced repetition are one of many techniques used for language learning. However, we all learn differently and while these methods work for many people, they may not necessarily work for you. Give it a try, but don’t be disheartened if these methods aren’t right for you. Even if flashcards and spaced repetition work for you, don’t forget to incorporate other forms of practice. E.g. try using your new vocabulary to write your own practice sentences.
It is available here on PC, Mac, Linux, iPhone, and Android. You can also find the browser AnkiWeb version here.
Manually adding basic cards is quite simple, but making custom templates is a bit more complex. Basementality has put together this handy guide for making custom card types and decks. You can also find Anki’s documentation / instruction guide here.
*The iPhone app AnkiMobile costs $24.99 USD on the iTunes store. The Android app and all other platforms are completely free. The mobile browser version of AnkiWeb is still available for free on iPhones.
See the next page for some helpful tips on creating your flashcards.

I just tested it a bit and it looks quite good. I wanted to know if there was like a free repository for textbooks covering all language aspects (grammar / vocabulary etc) and various levels (CEFR) for self study.
In that website, the study from textbook does not give a list of ebooks; merely quizzes to answer.

Hello everybody, has anybody tried using VocabSieve to mine sentences? I was wondering if anybody knows where I can download a good German monolingual local dictionary to add to an app like this
Are we allowed to share links with solutions for specific grammar situations here? For example, a link to a WordReference Forum post?
Why wouldn't it be allowed exactly?
I wasn't sure and didn't want to be reprimanded. I didn't see anyone else doing that * (I should've scrolled further up). Also, the resources on the resource list seemed like big sources of information.
For example: 'Butter oder Salz in die Suppe': https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/difference-between-in-akk-in-dat.1668459/

Hey, what are some good resources, and should I use duolingo
Hello! So I am searching for a platform to keep my German level and I can't really find one except duolingo which I don't really want to use. Is there a website or app someone can recommend me? I am at B1. Thank you very much in advance!

hi
Maybe you can make a YouTube playlist and add new videos in that?
German conjugation: conjugate a German verb with Reverso Conjugator, see German conjugation models, conjugated forms in future, participle, present, indicative.
any websites like this one?
specifically conjugations dictionary
Try Netzverb. I highly recommend it. 🙂 it includes more than verb conjugations.
Artikel des Tages
Was geschah am …?
In den Nachrichten
Verstorben
Schon gewusst?
Schwesterprojekte
I use it too. Is really practical. I just look for random words and make some random senseless sentences to practice.
Thanks i will try it
Nice, now you don't have to post every single video. Just add it to the playlist 👍
Nein.
😆
excuse me whys the link like this 💀
its this verb?
It's their URL for their verb conjugation page.
can someone send a list of endings which have the article der die and das

If you do, anyhow
Maybe thanks for the idea
Yup yup!
Do you guys have a pdf of conjugated verbs ?
Hello, which textbook is better to study from for B2? Kontext, Aspekte Neu or Erkundungen?
I'll be giving testdaf in a couple months, which would be best to learn from if I want to improve my vocabulary and get a good foundation in the grammar topics for B2?
I think this is better suited to ask in #942470380692590632. 🙂
Hello does anyone have any podcast recommendations for beginners ? I want to adapt my ears to hearing German better while learning about it too

<@&305455824174710787> instead of duo i have a better one for resource, i used it myself also and its better. last week i had praxis and some kids who learned with do said that duo has sometimes really bad mistakes. (for example pronuanciation lieben-leben. duo taught them that leben is pronounced like lieben) i can send a link for that
You can submit something to be considered for adding to the resource list using the command as explained by the bot message.

Yes of course I would suggest Deepl . It's available for Android and iOS also , You can also use it in the web browser. It's a great translator. Must try !
Hope this helps!
@stiff tide Pirated materials aren't allowed.
Gotcha
Affordable course for A1?
kann jemand bitte ein paare einfache deutsche Shows empfehlen (auf etwa A2-B1 Niveau)
schau mal "extra auf deutsch" auf youtube
A1 & A2 are more than doable w/like Duolingo or some youtube playlist etc.
i think im gonna be using duolingo and deutsche welle for a1 and a2
Sure. I recommend Lingolia to those that have knowledge of grammar in their native language, i.e. know what direct or indirect objects are, predicate, subject...
as a native speaker my english is pretty good but i couldn't tell you the difference between a predicate and an indirect object. i probably should though
Has little to do with the level. It's more so the difference between an English Native and English Linguist/someone that studied English linguistics
It's also not something someone should know, but if someone coincidentally does know or is prepared to learn it, Lingolia would be very helpful
Duolingo is not really recommended because it's very slow. You can use it, but you should use something a bit better as the main source. DW is good though.
faq nicos
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the courses here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469/
yeah i did a little bit of nicos weg today and feel like i learned more than like 3 days of duo. is babbel significantly better?
No idea, I know nothing about it. But generally as far as free courses go, Nicos Weg is the one most people recommend. You can also use textbooks, a lot of people like those.
hallo, i want resource for A1
Yeah.. Any classroom like a course for an affordable price ? Cause I'm learning on my own but can't keep consistency so looking for classes

Thank you, your resource suggestion has been submitted!
Thank you so much
What could be a main source that I can use? I don't like DW nicos WEg
A textbook is a fine option.
I have a textbook just for grammar is that enough?
Or just use this and make up your own: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Kz1Xqx0sFXAWys-Mgfhjc-M8JDCMtoeeGXcg5-orP_A/edit
German Grammar - Order of Topics A basic list of what order to study grammar topics in, separated by level. This is not the only order you can study in. This is just a simple list people can use if they’re unsure what to study next. I put an asterisk next to topics that aren’t really essential ...
You have to do other activities too but yes it's good enough for a guideline of what order to learn stuff.
all ive been doing is grammar boook
okay
i dont know what other activites to do though

Hallo. Ich möchte zwei oder drei Bücher auf Deutsch lesen. Aber, wo kann ich sie finden? Mein Lieblingsthema ist Geschichte. Deutsche Geschichte, Welte Geschichte, Alles das geht es gut. Sehr einfach Bücher, bitte.
Mainly looking for recommendations. Not sure if this is the right channel, but I figure a book is a resource. Close enough at least.
how to immerse myself in the language if my level is A1
does anyone have this book pdf or a link to buy
https://duostories.org/ - excellent for duo stories which aren't on the platform, could not recommend enough!
Author and publisher would be helpful. Don't ask for pdfs here, we don't allow pirated material.
Idk if its been mentioned but "German With Laura" seems good! At least in my opinion, and so far I've used it for German cases.
idk if this is the channel for memes, unless im mistaken in which case im sorry
Oh maybe it’s not
I can move it

<@&305455824174710787> I think the ‘youtube playlist’ on section 14.2 of the German Learning and Discussion Resource List is dead, it returns a ‘this play list does not exist’ for me
Thanks, I will look into it.

I've been obsessing over finding German music recently (My taste in music certainly questionable but). What kind of stuff do you like?
Does anyone recommend an online translator. Mostly trying to translate lyrics or more colloquial stuff and Google is throwing me off
Deepl oder ChatGPT O.O
No translator will be perfect for Lyrics...but those two works best in my opinion, especially ChatGPT...just dont ask it questions on Grammatik and such lol
Hat jemand Empfehlungen für jemandem der die Fälle ausüben möchten? Apps zum Beispiel die hilfreich sind
