I have no idea of the veracity or legitimacy of this particular link, but here's a result I found for Der Kleine Prinz, if anyone would like to read ahead... it seems pretty legit though: http://data.exaudio.de/ebook/Exupery_Der_kleine_Prinz.pdf
Nice pictures, too 🙂
Thank you!

<@&526087868079144961>
Okay lets go! well be in voice channel Der Kleine Prinzand will be using the lessons text channel for written communication
if you want to read please put an R for reading in front of your nickname. I will go from top to bottom in the voice chat list and will prioritise those with the R in front of their names

oh no my edition is different lol
ie in German is like e in english
ei in German is like i in English
my edition is different
@novel pier use this copy
^ yes all the prep work is wasted lol
this is the one i will be using
thank you ❤️
can you hear me crying
@echo stag did you want to read
At least you find out now rather than after preparing a few chapters?
yeah there's that at least
idk if it's correct to put it this way but I associated the R pronouciation in some words like they are in french
the r in german is like the french one 👍
lol the first 3 chapters of my book looks like this. At least I have the correct edition for the next lesson 😢
I can't read now because my grandma is vacuuming
sich verirren become lost
no worries we can come back to you
I can read now
Thank you
Enough of it seems similar that I think you should generally be alright though
@spring pebble

i have to leave now but thank you very much bluwu :3
@signal venture thanks for coming by!
lol yeah I go too quickly to remember to correctly pronounce z too
oh no I was just replying to what quilan said
are we going to a specific chapter and/or time?
we might stop after this chapter, well see how long it is
I’m going to have to leave, now. Thank you so much for hosting this session. I’ve learned a lot of new words. I look forward to the next one! 🙂
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to go now, thank you so much for the lesson!!
I had to leave as well. I might come back later if the lesson is still going on.
How can I improve my listening
i have exam for tomorrow
what should i do
I can read, write, speak, but i cant understand what i listening to
I think it would've been smart to work with it a bit before the exam, it isn't something you can cram like glossaries or something
jdn beschäftigen = to bother (thought, problem)
erinnern
thank y'all for the session!
the little prince is a really special book to me so it's nice to learn through it
Yep, it has kind of a magical aura around it
for tomorrow there's not much u can do... make sure u sleep well and drink lots of water to be able to concentrate and fill the gaps as much as possible by holding to the words you know... for long term practice: join the "german only" voice channels on this server and listen to people talk, watch nachrichten in 100 sekunden from tagesschau, watch series such as türkishe für anfanger which is a fairly easy one to understand available on german netflix, follow learning-friendly soap-operas on deutsche welle such as jojo such das gluck and nico´s weg. Viel Glück!
umsteigen - change/switch vehicles
But figuratively it can mean any major change:
Ich habe lange Chemie studiert, bin dann aber auf Physik umgestiegen.
I studied chemistry for a long time, but then switched to physics.
^example from online
tauschen - trade/exchange/swap
austauchen - exchange
Geschenkaustausch - gift exchange
Austauschstudentenprogramm - exchange student program
umtauschen - can mean to exchange but mostly like return as in like return an item to a store
wechseln - to exchange/change - I dont really know the difference with this one
I just know Stoffwechsel ("stuff" + "exchange") means metabolism because it says it in that one alligatoah song "du bist schoen"

Hello to all the little bookworms amongst us!

Hallo ihr fleißige Leseratten!!
Dieses Wochenende wird wieder mal gelesen! 🐢📖⏰
Diese Woche werden wir das 19. Kapitel lesen.
Also wir machen zwar das Gleiche wie letzt Woche, aber an einem unterschiedlichen Tag, denn, auch wenn es mir vielleicht ein bisschen peinlich ist, muss ich gestehen, dass ich eigentlich ein ziemlich großer Fan von Eurovision bin.
Also da Eurovision zu unserer gewohnten Zeit stattfinden wird, habe ich unsere Startzeit auf den Tag danach verschoben.
Wann: 23.

Hi, what more could we do in the readings to make it more effective ?
Right now I just listen to other people read and listen to all the corrections.
Are you guys making notes in the pdf itself or write down meanings on paper and other stuff ?
For me personally, I pre-read the chapters [both for the beginner & advanced lessons]. Typically the first pass is to define words I don't recognize / can't immediately bring to mind. The second or third passes through the whole material are to get a more holistic understanding of the sentences, then paragraphs; I find the repeated readings helps things stick a bit more. If there's a particularly sticky or weirdly-worded sentence I still can't grasp, I'll throw that into something like DeepL for some idea of what's going on. I copy/paste the material into a google doc to annotate with notes & definitions. Then during the reading sessions, I'll write down stuff I inevitably pronounce wrong, to put in my list of "things to actively practice." But these steps might be overkill for those that understand things better.
You can pre-read the up coming chapters or post-read them. An easy way to review and incorporate what you learned is to listen to the chapters as audio. This is a common enough book that you can find audios of it on YouTube. Although not all with the same translation
<@&581851964007251968>
Hallo zusammen! Wir fangen mit dem Momo Leserunde in etwa eine halbe Stunde an

Opps *mit der
I have the copy printed out and make notes on that (in booklet format so it’s a 1/4 as many pages). Usually I’d go over it before the lesson, but I have exams for the next week and I can barely spare half an hour for the lessons, I certainly can’t manage to annotate it all beforehand. But the best way to practice in my opinion is to repeatedly read the text, then listen to it, then engage in a sort of question and answer thing, where you answer questions about it in german. You could kind of do that yourself I think by recording yourself asking questions about the text then answering them yourself, having written down the correct answer. That’s just my opinion though. I’ve been trying to persuade my boyfriend to consider asking if he could do an accompanying session to the reading asking questions about it and recording the questions and best answers so people could prepare in advance if they were still beginners. So they’d kind of get a bit of speaking practise in. But it would be a reasonable amount of work I think and also he’s not sure how to run a session and incredibly nervous. Still.. it’s my favourite technique for learning with books.

I’m going to go, I’d love to have stayed longer, especially during the last session, but I think I’m starting to feel the side effects the rest of my family was unfortunate enough to experience with the vaccine and I’ve got a creeping headache and am feeling shattered. Thank you so much though! Not just for this session, but for all of them. You’ve done an amazing job!
I will go to bed as well, I'd quite like this format (the reading) to be continued at some point, who knows, I might even host it. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you @delicate vortexfor the sessions. They've been lovely and we had so much fun together. Hope you have a lovely rest evening and a nice session. Cheers!

will there be a lesson tomorrow?
@tawdry gorge is this the one you wanted to do ?
Yes, idk if i should make an announcement but if so ill make it this evening
I’m confused
I was talking about the little prince lessons (but also interested if there will be another lesson tomorrow as well)
How far did you guys get?
Last week we finished chapter 11 I believe
What time do you guys usually have it?
Blu resumed uni so I'm guessing it might not happen
ok thank you
What time do you guys regularly have it?
12pm UTC
Ah... I remember that now. Way too early for me
I can maybe do one 3 hours later.
If you want to continue at that time then maybe have a mod ping and just work together with the regular readers on it
I think if we wanted to continue the little prince we should wait for Blu
I see.
I cant make it this week guys
That's ok, good luck with uni work 🙂
I'm hosting the little prince lesson in place of blu, I'll make an announcement now @visual jetty
Sorry but this description is too long (661/200 characters). Please use the >session post command to add detailed information about your session.
Okay @tawdry gorge. Your session has been scheduled for in 12 hours, 9 minutes and 8 seconds. The session ID is: 71
<@&526087868079144961>
Hello you lovely lot and Broseidon!
Once again we're going to be continuing our reading of The Little Prince at 12 today. In absence of the lovely blu your hosts this week will be @Vampire Lord Catto and I (@im not gay but 🌈). We'll be reading from chapter 11 onwards, and be sure to check the pins for a copy of the book we'll be reading from.
When: 13th June 12:00 UTC
What: reading aloud with summaries of what you've read in either German or English.

every week, sunday 12pm UTC. We'll also be publishing a calendar for lessons over the summer holidays within the next few weeks so keep an eye out.
are there ever additional lessons or impromptu lessons?
I'll for sure try to make the next lesson thouhg
*though
yes, for that however I would suggest waiting on the calendar either way.
you may also join the different groups related to what youre interested in learning about
this list is quite cohesive, its also featured in #282831147942281216
if you sub to a group, you will get a ping any time an event is scheduled or starting
@floral inlet you could use the bot command too >sessions in the bot channel saves me from converting the timezones
will it session all?
The next session in queue
>sessions lists all upcoming sessions that have been registered with the bot.
Are these lessons just in a random voice chat at the allotted time? 😅
Oh nvm I see the Lessons one lmao

Did you join before or after the command ?
Yeah sadly discord only applies permission updates on a join/leave and not live
endgültig - with finality, conclusive
vertrödeln - dawdle, dilly dally, piddle (away), laze about
jemandem (etwas) bringen - to be of advantage to someone, to be of use, to be of some good to someone
lol last night I was like, surely I don't need to read past chapter 14.... oops
mürrisch - grumpy, annoyed
not to be confused:
gehört - heard (perfect tense of 'to hear')
gehört - present singular of 'to belong to' (takes a dative object)
patentieren - to patent
Intellectual property stuff
LOV GROG
sich Apfelsaft auf den Kopf zu verschütten - to spill apple juice on one's head
the best way I can describe this is that a 'u' without an umlaut should go "downward"
oh my
I think today we have a lot of more advanced readers, so we are going faster than usual
are you still able to keep up? or should we go a little slower
yeah I preread all these chapters. For the ones after this.... I'll probably read back over them later lol
pflichtbewusst - dutiful, aware of one's duties
derart - so (emphasizing), "in such a way"
nachtrauern - to regret, to mourn
to be located
Fluss (masc.) -> Flüsse
bring me to life
vorgänglich - fleeting, volatile, perishable
erloschen - (of a volcano) extinct
verschwinden - to disappear, to vanish
@alpine fox you should continue a bit because I wanted you to read some of the next chapter...
that's why I read so much
der Ruf - the reputation (literal translation: the shout)
In the translation to my language they used the n-word 😅
oh my god
Am I to understand correctly that "Tschuss" and "Tschus" are both accurate spellings of "Bye" (of course with umlauts--I don't have a German KB setup currently).
Laternenanzünder - Lantern lighter/lamplighter
But Tschuss being the modern-day spelling, after the reform, which got rid of the eszett?
from wikipedia:
A lamplighter is a person employed to light and maintain candle or, later, gas street lights. Very few exist today as most gas street lighting has long been replaced by electric lamps.
You did good Angell 👏

It's all good... I just wanted to make my corny TLC joke about the Geographer, so I'm satisfied. (i.e. 'he should stick to the rivers & the lakes that he's used to')
i am in need of practing. please give me something easy to translate in german

Meh mit deinem streaming passts schon
ausfragen = to ask a lot of questions
Gibt es einen Grund warum es "Ich nahm sie wahr wie im Traum" ist und nicht "Ich nahm sie wie im Traum wahr" ?
both are okay, you can think of the "wie ein traum" part of the sentence action a bit like a second clause
ok
its pretty common to say stuff like "Er sieht aus wie dein Vater" or similar
and likewise for other seperable verbs like wahrnehmen
@cold dock
I find it more fluid actually, closer to the English grammar. I thought it was just a spoken thing
most people find it easier to parse, you dont have to remember the verb for as long that way
before hearing the prefix and understanding the whole word
but once again both are fine, take your pick ^^
Yes sometimes the sentence is so long and you have to remember that little particule until the end, it kinds of limits you in your thought process.
Sorry, das streaming ist einfach zu überfordernd für mein Handy.. Mein Akku ist nun fast leer weswegen ich los muss
ich wünsche euch viel Spaß weiterhin.

@delicate vortexthe next session will start from which chapter??

Hi everyone! On July 2nd at 9pm GMT/UTC (11pm CEST) we're going to have a casual welcome/intro night for the July-August Holiday Sessions. This will mostly just involve some introductions, some info about the upcoming sessions, and some fun activities - in particular, we're hoping to stream a movie for everyone, assuming no technical difficulties. We look forward to seeing you there!
All levels
Oh, forgot to add, the movie will be in German.
@wary atlas do you already have a movie/genre in mind or is it going to be more of a spur of the moment type thing?
I will definitely be there!
I'm still deciding. 😄
Sounds good. I'm excited :)
<@&526087863339843585>
Hello everyone!
Welcome to out GLaD summer of sessions! 🌺 🌊 📚
In this lesson we will be going over n-declension, also known as weak masculine nouns.
When: 3rd July 21:00 UTC
**What: ** We will discuss which nouns are weak, how and when to decline them as well as the exceptions.
This is a B1-B2 level topic, and as such my explanations will assume a basic knowledge of cases and sentence structure in German. But as always, anyone of any level is welcome to attend :D
I will display slides on the topic, and use the #lessons text channel for exercises and questions, you are also welcome to use the voice channel for questions.

sus
ßuß
remind me please
I will ping the role again 30mins before starting
Is there a way to get lessons added to my Google Calander?
As well as when we start
Would be cool if GLAD had a "sessions" calander that we could sub to
There is a calendar in the announcements
Why did I think something else was happening on the 3rd at that time? I’m so confused
It is a self made one, so it wont interface with your google calendar, but you can manually put in the lessons
There is the welcome event on the 2nd
This on the 3rd
And reading on the 4th
And would you mind me coming even if I’m not B1?
Anyone is welcome
@delicate vortex how long will the session be?
Some of the exersises may be hard for A levels, but i provide hints
is Level a the lowest ?
The topic itself isnt too hard, my exercises are probably what makes it hard
should i pick the role ?
A is beginners yes
I’ll do my best to keep up and try not to bother you if I can’t.
Pretty sure thats always OK
Its okay im there so that people can ask questions
About 2 hrs
Note to everyone interested in session times: You can type >sessions in #botchannel any time to see all upcoming sessions.
Thank you! I just don’t want to take up too much time because I’m there when I shouldn’t be.
Will this grammar session be happening every week or is it a one off?
I have a few sessions which i will run sporadically, there will however be weekly beginner sessions
Ouch, I just had a look at the times. I think I might have to skip the beginner grammar sessions. I’m already struggling with the ones starting at 22:00, but the beginner ones start at midnight for me and 01:00 for anyone in Europe which is Rusty.
I shall attend as well, to help out if I can.
Oh no you won’t. Not with school.
I am not letting you stay up until 3 in the morning to get up at 6 the next day
Last time we did these, we ran them twice at two different times, we might again, but its not planned
Therell be a notification if it goes ahead
I understand that’ll be a lot of work so I can understand why you probably don’t have time to. Don’t worry. I am not likely to be there for those however.
A nap never goes unappreciated...
besides, I think the 3rd July is a saturday...
The one on the 3rd starts at 10 my time 11 yours, which is what we were doing for the reading so that should be okay hopefully?
Yeah, unfortunately the two main people who hold lessons (me and Bluwu) are Australian, so we struggle to find times suitable for others, lol.
Hello
🤔 I was considering holding sessions at some point but I have no idea what I could do...
If youre interested, there is a document for lesson ideas
It doesnt have to be grammar
Just be careful Rusty. Don’t try and take on too much, because you’ve also got the group sessions to think about and school currently.
If you mean the ones for the study group, there's no reason those can't just be help publicly, right?
Where is that?
True I suppose, but I thought the whole point of them was to be split into smaller groups.
It depends on what kind of session you meant. I was thinking you meant like a lesson but maybe you just meant a discussion session.
If I actually thought I was at any level to run them I would. But the most I could do is a very beginner session and I’m not even sure I’d be able to answer all the questions there.
I'll DM you about it.
@delicate vortexWill you be recording these sessions? These are really late for my timezone just like Advanced Reading ones (used to be) :/
It will be cool if you hold them again at a different time.
im sorry, im not comfortable with recording myself or anyone on discord. I will share my slides and word document afterwards
i could possible alternate my lesson times or hold it twice
i have uni at the moment, so twice is unlikely, but i can hold the wo and da compounds lesson closer to 12 UTC
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that. I can understand recording can be uncomfortable .
@delicate vortex sorry for the ping, but would we be learning grammar and punctuation ?
i will be talking about n-declined words, i think it falls under grammar
punctuation is there too, but i wont be explicitly talking about comma placement and such
alright sounds good
h
I’m new here and was just wondering what time the next lesson is and what it’s on
You can use the >sessions command in #botchannel to look at current sessions, and subscribe to groups for pings
You can use „>session info number“ to list more info
ok thanks!
i can help you
thank you so much
I am a german guy
<@&639079683400400906>
Hi everyone, the welcome night will begin in roughly 15 minutes. We're just going to go over some of the info about the holiday sessions and study groups, maybe introduce some of our sessions holders (if they're available), and then watch a movie in German - assuming no technical difficulties. But if we have any issues with the movie, we'll just do something else. See you there!
All levels
How do I join this activity
you can simply join #286179509852700672 when it starts
So we're watching a movie in german?
Have you guys any idea if there will be more B1+ events than the two already given?
What level is this? will someone who's just starting still be able to participate?
Any newcomer guide for beginners to get started here?
im here but not ready to talk
#getting-started … maybe
Does one need to be native to host/help with sessions? D:
Grammar is nice, but if possible, improving writing and speaking facility would be peachy ❤️
Sorry i was sorting out my headphones
yes.. I need some help?!
i am very interested in events for b2+
This is just an introductory event. And a movie is planned afterwards, and subtitles are available for the movie. However, during the session marathon itself, beginner lessons are definitely planned.
After the beginner reading i was thinking of going back to the advanced reading style @digital sierra @boreal zealot
Can I join in even if I’m not at that level yet?
Its open for all like every event here
idk if this is a bit niche but i find that the gaps i have in my language as a heritage speaker are different to those of people learning german from scratch. so if there were any study groups for heritage speakers whose german is maybe B2 level but with weird gaps then that would be awesome. idk if there already is as i havent signed up yet
can we do some classic german literature readings, for the B2+ crowd. like goethe, schiller, etc
Hmmmmm i think i would cry so many old words
I was thinking a book similar to momo
will this discord stage be utilised in the future for lessons? I find this great, that people coming in/out don't disturb the lesson
ok, we have to hold hands, but I don't think that's a problem? I guess you can give us all to talk now and then mute us all?
If you know any short classics then we can do some short series
maybe stuff like "der Vorleser", "die Verwandlung"
Well, in theory we're open to it, but it's up to the session holders themselves to decide how they want to organize their sessions. For example, for reading sessions, a big problem is that stages don't support screen sharing (yet, though it's a planned feature). So for some lessons they're just not a good fit, but we could use them where it makes sense.
my time zone is british summer time so should fit in ok with others
I thought screen sharing was the big feature of stage channels
nah sadly not (yet)
CatCast™️
yes!
can confirm! am an outsider xD
catcast + screen sharing = caTV
haha _;D:
Could you do a night like this, talking and explaining things but solely in German?
Is there anything planned for this welcome night aside from questions + movie?
A shoutout and welcome to everyone who joined us via Stage Discovery btw! It's our fist time trying it out and we're glad to have you here. We hope you enjoy this little part of our community.
CatCast is just immersion but better
What is catcast?
what movie?
A quiz would be so fun!!!!
movie time
kahoots
If only you could screenshare for kahoot
which movie will it be?
Hier fragt man fragen ne?
When you talk about streaming games, what kind of games do you mean? All kinds of games?
lol i'm just trying to place Basementality's accent...i'm guessing australian but may be wrong
ye that would be cool!
Not sure if this would be practical, but on Zoom you can use breakout groups for little icebreaker sessions. You might have to pay for that though, no idea.

No make this a permanent thing
There’s no longer anyone, but is there a system for answering the question section thing? Because there were 3 originally I think.
Regarding the study grous, how were they groued
not really questions like that, for now we're talking about
planning, study groups and stuff
richtige aldi fragen
I think you can also try to coordinate a study group by yourself after the marathon if you want
When you talk about streaming games, what kind of games do you mean? All kinds of games?
cuz the timezones are too far for some ppl
You can stay in contact afterwards ❤️

Nooo
Running >faq beginner in the #botchannel is a great resource.
Flashcards! real life ones!
anki is good for flashcards
I agree that reading and Anki flashcards are both great.
it's important to not misgender your table
How do you learn the gender when you learn the words from reading?
Then you remember the word for like 1-2 days perhaps a week, but you have to add the wrod to your vocab and use it to really remember it.
That’s a big issue I’ve had
Thats why I dislike flashcards
any advice on learning genders of nouns when you know a lot of nouns but get the gender wrong a lot between masc/neuter?
@wary atlas could you point out >faq beginner?
Wie komm ich hier in den casual voice?
I use Anki and think is wonderful for learning vocabulary
You could learn a word from reading and then add it to Anki to help reinforce the gender and plural
are there any anki sets you guys would recommend?
Write down the word 100x in vocab book
@cyan mortar I think it depends on your current knowledge
you can make flashcards that show the word in context
your own
Or you can learn from context clues, if you read about "eine blaue Katze" you can note that that's a feminine noun because of the words that come before it.
CEST + MST for example
Read books, articles etc, and create flashcards with words you don’t know
it’s best to make your own decks
(Obviously that doesn't help for e.g. "ein Pferd" or a word with no article)
with words you’re actually interested in using
Mein Tisch will aber feminine sein, sie sieht zierlich und elegant aus und fühlt sich innerlich weiblich 😤
I notice feminine but find it hard to distinguish neuter and masculine
Sadly there really are no rules (apart from a very few exceptions like certain endings). But if making flashcards and things, always include the article and make the article essentially a part of the word. Don't give yourself a pass if you don't know it. See also >faq gender patterns in the #botchannel.
WENN ICH SAG DASS DER TISCH MÄNNLICH IST IST DER TISCH MÄNNLICH 😤
touché
where can I find good reading material for a1
It can be tricky to tell the difference between masculine and neuter with context clues, for sure, unless they're accusative. That's why adding words to flashcards is so handy.

MEIN APFEL IST WEIBLICH, er hat das chromosom XX.
Die Tisch fühlt sich unterdrückt und unterrepräsentiert. Rechte für weibliche Tische!
Check the resource list >faq resources or the topic of the #resources channel. It has some beginner-friendly materials.
What do you use to look up the genders of nouns?
ty
Der Tisch kann die Schnauze halten! 😤
any good dictionary, such as dict.cc for example
You can use a dictionary like dict.cc
Ahh many answers
Dictionaries, wikitionary, even google translate if you know how to use it.
Personally, the german wiktionary since it also has meanings, examples, translations into various other languages, but any dictionary will do.
Okay. I need to get over my disliking of dictionaries then
Dict.cc lists the plural too @hollow dock which is also irregular
And should show if its weak
I’ll try that then, thank you!
Where can we sign up to beginner events and get pinged?

So, a brief summary of the most important questions we got.
• What do you recommend for beginners?
You can read our #getting-started channel for general tips about this server and some learning resources. If you use >faq all in the #botchannel it will show you a list of cool guides written by community members. In particular, I want to highlight >faq beginner. Our curated resource list available at https://bit.ly/gladresources contains all sorts of useful resources too.
• Can we still sign up to the study groups, what are they?
See here for a description of what study groups are #announcements message and DM the lovely @wary atlas, if you're interested, but haven't signed up yet.
• What kind of events are planned?
All sessions are held by volunteers and up to them. We're gonna have movie nights, games, grammar lessons, reading lessons and more. If you're interested in helping out host a lesson, shoot us a message, you don't need to be a native to help out. You can see the currently scheduled sessions by using the >sessions command, but note that we're gonna continuously update that and add more sessions.
• Other questions about German in general, best practices, etc.
Feel free to ask those in #questions and the community will get to them!
• ** Other questions about organization, general questions about the server.**
Feel free to ask them here or in #general-2 and we'll do my best to help you out.

Question: are there any good resources for learning umgangsprache? there are honestly a number of words that arent used by their annotated definition but are still super common in german speech. that being said, do you know of any particularly good resources for learning these definitions of words?
Youtube
i dont think so, my tip would be just to talk with a native german speaker
honestly i think the best way is to just watch tv and talk in german
honestly, just listening to natives in VC should be a good start

N-Declension/Weak masculine nouns: Have you ever wondered why der Name becomes den Namen?? We’ll discuss this topic
As an example
the rule to be a session holder is that you need an animal in your name
in english I had a problem I was able to understand but I was unable to speak. But in german it's the opposite, I can speak but german native speakers sounds like rappers and I catch nothing 😄
Oh theres a bird in my name i forgot
